ASUS VIVOBOOK PRO 14 OLED (M3401) LAPTOP

Last month I was able to look at the ASUS Vivobook 13 Slate OLED, a 2-in-1 multi-media companion. Now ASUS has given us the chance to take a look at their Vivobook catered to budding artists and content creators, the ASUS Vivobook Pro 14 OLED, a small but powerful laptop. June 2022

DESIGN Our unit came in the Quiet Blue color, which is closer to a black than blue color. The Vivobook Pro 14 OLED has a metallic top chassis which adds to its luxurious feel. ASUS also made the Vivobook branding unique, having its own space instead of the usual engraved or sticker on top of the chassis.

The laptop also has a myriad of I/O ports. On the left are two USB Type-A ports as well as two LED indicator lights. The USB

The whole laptop is pretty portable. It weighs a mere 1.4kg and comes in at just 19.2mm thick. You can easily place it in a backpack and forget about it until you reach your destination.

The display has a 2880 x 1800 (2.8K) resolution with a 90Hz refresh rate. It is also Pantone Validated and has VESA DisplayHDR 600 True Black certified. The display also boasts a 100% DCI-P3 color gamut. Once you power on the laptop, you’ll immediately notice how good the display really is.

I had a blast using the Vivobook Pro 14 OLED. I had too much fun playing and working on it. Like, I said earlier, the laptop can run most AAA games without breaking a sweat. Pair that with the gorgeous OLED display, and what more can you ask for. Supposed you’re an artist who wants to do some competitive gaming on the side. In that case, the display’s 90 Hz refresh is your best friend, especially in games like Valorant, where a higher refresh rate helps a player’s performance.

Speaking of Adobe applications, the ASUS Vivobook Pro 14 OLED also came with free three-month membership of Adobe Creative Cloud. It was also pretty easy to redeem. After registering their ASUS device in the MyASUS app, they’ll automatically be prompted to redeem their complimentary subscription.

Of course, the ASUS Vivobook Pro 14’s OLED display was also perfect for movies and other cinematic media. I preferred watching Netflix on the laptop over my PC because of the OLED display. But the thing holding back the laptop was the speaker. I found it lackluster despite being tuned by Harman Kardon. It lacked volume for the most part, but it didn’t sound hallow nor muddy.

Gaming aside, the ASUS Vivobook Pro 14 OLED was really intended for artists with its Pantone Validated OLED display. I’m no graphics artist, but luckily our artist was gracious enough to give me feedback when she worked on the laptop, lay-outing our upcoming issue. She told me that the laptop could handle most of the render work she threw at it. Its render time was smooth for Photoshop, even if she used other applications. The laptop did

SPECIFICATIONS

Call me old-fashioned, but the thing that impressed me the most was the laptop’s massive I/O port selection. For a modern laptop, it’s refreshing to see ASUS equip the Vivobook Pro 14 with four USB ports (3x USB-Type A port, and a Type-C). The other thing I appreciated is the proprietary charging port. While I love USB Type-C charging it really grinds my gear if it comes at the price of the limited USB port. As for my work, using the Vivobook Pro 14 was alright. The keyboard is spacious for typing. The NumPad 2.0 on the trackpad was practicable in certain scenarios, but I really didn’t find much use for it during my daily grind. As for the trackpad itself, it feels great, similar to higher-end laptops. There’s also the added security of a webcam shield. The power button also doubles as a fingerprint reader, but unfortunately, I was unable to test it out. Another thing that ASUS had done well was the laptop’s cooling. Under the hood is an ASUS IceCool Plus dual-fan cooling system. The laptop doesn’t heat up even during intensive tasks or gaming. What I and our graphic artist notice, however, is the battery life. I feel that battery power quickly drains out, especially during heavy workload. But the included 120W charges the device to 60% in under 45 minutes, and a full charge (with battery health mode) lasts over 2 hours.

Famous for its “indestructible” 3310, Nokia is stepping it up by bringing its renowned durability to smartphones with long-lasting batteries and sturdy designs. Let’s take a closer look at the Nokia G21.

DESIGN Unpacking the Nokia G21, the smartphone already has a pre-applied screen protector which was a plus for me, it is also bundled with a USB-C cable, a charger, earphones, sim ejector pin, a silicon case, and a manual. it has a glass front and a textured finish plastic back. The test unit came in Nordic Blue. It has a 6.5” HD+ IPS display with a refresh rate of 90Hz. Notwithstanding the high refresh rate, screen brightness is still slightly dim even in max brightness and the resolution could use a little more improvement. Volume keys are on the right, as well as the lock/unlock, power, and fingerprint scanner. On the left side are the Google Assistant button and the dual-sim/ microSD card slot. The mono speaker and USB-C charging port are located on the bottom while the 3.5mm headphone jack

When I took the unit out of the box, my first impression of the simple design was that it was a bit chunky and sturdily built. As for its durability, one might ask if I tried a drop test to see if it’s shockproof. I didn’t do it on purpose, but I may have accidentally dropped it a few times, and to no surprise, it didn’t get any dents or scratches. Testing its display, performance, and camera quality was a bit challenging. The Nokia G21 uses an IPS panel, but an AMOLED display could’ve been the better option. Its smooth 90Hz refresh rate compensates for a screen that is slightly dim and a display with muted colors. Performance on the usual daily tasks is all right, but gaming could be a bit of a stretch. Fast-paced games work but might take too long to load and I experienced some lagging. With just a mono speaker, audio quality is not up to par, and I recommend you plug in earphones when gaming and other entertainment. Second is its battery life, thanks to a massive 5050mAh battery that could last up to 3 days. I’d spend almost 6 to 7 hours on gaming, social media, and streaming platforms per day, and I’d still have 40% to 50% charge remaining at the end of the day.

VALUE The Nokia G21 is priced at PHP 9,990, a reasonable price point for a budget smartphone. It has its pros and some cons, but I’d recommend this to people whose screentime is pretty lengthy.

I’ve heard a lot about the Nokia G21 and was excited to test it out myself. No smartphone is perfect and just like every other device, it has its strengths and areas for improvement.

AI Imaging. It is able to capture clear and detailed photos and produce good colors, but I do believe that Nokia can still improve on its camera department. Apart from the usual night mode, the camera also features timelapse videos, macro, and panoramic shots.

USER EXPERIENCE I had a great first impression of the Oppo A9. Removing the plastic film wrapped around it revealed this gorgeous pink smartphone, that I immediately loved. But as always, I had to test the unit’s camera quality and features, its performance in gaming and regular daily use, and its new tech features. I tested out the camera quality indoors and outdoors, with satisfactory results for both photos and videos. Selfies were automatically enhanced with the AI Natural Retouching feature, but could sometimes get a bit pixelated in darker lighting. The outdoor pictures and videos, on the other hand, were surprisingly good, all in high resolution, crisp, sharp, and detailed. I have to say that Oppo did an

impressive job in improving the camera department. There are other features that you can use to level up your mobile photography game such as 360° Light Fill and Neon Portrait. Compared to its predecessors, the Oppo A96 has an IPS display, ditching the usual AMOLED display. To compensate, they gave the A96 a high refresh rate of 90Hz and a Full HD+ resolution. The refresh rate worked wonders for me, as multitasking or even switching between apps was seamless. As with every demo unit I review, I always play my three favorite mobile games — Call of Duty Mobile, Genshin Impact, and League of Legends: Wild Rift. The A96’s performance was excellent even with a subpar internet connection. Gaming was such a good experience. Since SFX is important when playing, audio quality

is also an important consideration, and let me tell you that the Oppo A96 delivered remarkable audio even without earphones plugged in. When it comes to the software, it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 processor designed for high efficiency, and it didn’t disappoint. However, although ColorOS 12 and Android 12 are already available, for some reason the A96 still runs on Android 11 with ColorOS 11.1.

VALUE Priced at PHP15,999.00, the Oppo A96 is worth your money. Even with some minor downgrades, this smartphone has a lot to offer — from the upgraded camera quality to its impeccable performance.

nstable oil prices, alarming levels of greenhouse gases in the metro, and the threat of climate change have forced the world to look closely at the modes of transportation, especially those with high levels of emission gases. In the Philippines, the largest contributors to greenhouse gases are private and public vehicles. This is compounded by the heavy traffic congestion in Metro Manila, resulting in the release of tons of carbon dioxide/monoxide and other exhaust gases daily from standstill traffic.

While the Covid-19 pandemic impacted heavily on the movement of people and their livelihoods, it became a catalyst for us to examine our mobility. In Covid-19’s early months when the total lockdown imposed in the country reduced the number of vehicles on the road to almost none, it was a pleasant surprise to breathe cleaner air in the metropolis. The daily morning smog over Metro Manila slowly cleared, making the area visible again from Antipolo.

(MMDA), responded by considering the long-time clamor for bicycle lanes to protect cyclists from motorized vehicles. On 27 July 2021, the Metro Manila Bike Lane Network was formally inaugurated. The country’s longest bike lane network cut through the 12 cities of Pasig, Marikina, Quezon City, Caloocan, Manila, San Juan, Mandaluyong, Makati, Pasay, Las Piñas, Parañaque, and Taguig. It has an overall length of 313-kilometers of bike lanes ranging from 1.5 to 3.0 meters in width.

Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, I had heard various groups advocate for the use of bicycles and electric scooters to reduce not only the volume of vehicle traffic but also pollution from harmful exhaust gases. But efforts to move the advocacy forward seemed to move very slowly, especially when the concerned agencies were preoccupied with problems involving motorized vehicles. Not so many people were concerned about responding to the call of the environmentalists.

To integrate bicycle lanes into future roads and highways, the DPWH released in September 2020 a department order prescribing the design of bike lanes along national roads. The agency wanted to make roads safe not just for motorists but for cyclists as well.

The limitations in mobility due to travel restrictions during the pandemic highlighted the need for a personal mode of traveling from home to work. Health workers who were required to man and operate medical facilities had to walk many miles to fulfill their duty. Workers running the food supply chain arrived at their workplace already exhausted from walking tens of kilometers from home.

cities of Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, and Talisay. It features white and green pavement markings, signages, bollards, bike symbols, and concrete delineators to keep bike riders safe. The network also has solar studs, and bike racks for the convenience of bikers.

But not for long. They began to rediscover the bicycle and kick scooter as viable modes of mobility, in the absence of a working public transport system. In a matter of days, thousands of cyclists began to fill the empty roads of the metropolis. With the opening, too, in the same year, of the 55km Metro Davao Bike Lane Network, a total of 497-kilometers of bike lane networks in metropolitan areas nationwide were opened up, encouraging more people to use bicycles and other eco-friendly personal mobility devices. According to DOTr Assistant Secretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure Mark Steven Pastor, the bike lanes maximize road space use as these can accommodate 1,250 cyclists per hour for every meter of road space. Former DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said the bike lanes are of great help to workers and commuters in Metro Manila who have taken to active transport in going to their workplaces and other destinations amid the pandemic. “Born out of the resourcefulness and dedication of workers despite the pandemic, active transportation such as cycling became the obvious solution,” he said. Less than a year later, the South and East Metro Manila Bike Lane Networks were opened with additional improved bike lanes in the cities of Marikina, Parañaque, Muntinlupa, and Las Piñas. Similar to earlier bike lanes, these Metro Manila Bike Lanes used concrete delineators, flexible rubber bollards bolted to the ground, white and green pavement markings made up of thermoplastic paint, bike symbols and signages, solarpowered road studs, and bike racks. The East or Marikina Bike Lane Network has an overall length of 17.20-kilometers, covering the 8.72km General Ordoñez Avenue, the 1.90km Liwasang Kalayaan, the 3.92km J. Molina, Scarlet, and Russet Streets, and the 2.64km Park Creek, from St. Vincent Hospital to Marikina Rehabilitation Center. On the other hand, the 48.90km South Manila Bike Lane Network covers the 16.87km Quirino Avenue to San Antonio Avenue via NAIA Road, Ninoy

Aquino Road and Parañaque-Sucat Road in Parañaque, the 21.83km Carlos P. Garcia Ext. to Bridgeway Avenue/ North Bridgeway via Diego Cera Avenue and Alabang-Zapote Road in Muntinlupa, and the 10.20km Investment Drive to Portofino Heights via Daang Hari Road in Las Piñas.

While travel restrictions are easing up under the new normal and public transportation is becoming available, the number of people using the bicycle lanes continues to grow. With an expanding base of bicycle users, the bicycle market is booming with prices more affordable for daily wage earners.

The completed project, connected to the existing 313-km Metro Manila Bike Lane Network, is part of the DPWH-DOTr’s strong commitment to promoting active and environmentally sustainable transportation in the country.

The planned imposition of new taxes on motorcycles and the endless fuel price increases will push more people to shift to bicycles and other active transport devices. This will be good for our environment as fewer exhaust gases will be released into the atmosphere.

With the increasing fuel prices, the new protected bike lanes will not just provide the cyclists with safe, available, shared road space but also encourage the public to adopt micro-mobility alternatives. This means that the concerned agencies must not stop laying more bike road networks all over the major cities. The present 650+ kilometers of bike lanes is too little if we expect millions of cyclists on the road. “Because of this bike lane, it’s a gamechanger. It will change everything — the mindset of everything. This is really a great project,” said then MMDA Chairman Benjamin Abalos, Jr.

A typical passenger car emits 4.6 tons of carbon dioxide per year (www.epa. gov). Public utility vehicles like the jeepney release more carbon dioxide because they run longer hours per day. As more and more citizens move towards sustainable transportation like bicycles and electric scooters, fewer high-polluting jeepneys and buses will ply the roads. As responsible citizens, this is our humble way of contributing to the preservation of the environment, while keeping our bodies healthy and fit.

The rising gas prices have made many, including Filipino motorists, drool over EVs and how much they’ll save by not gassing up. Apart from gasoline savings, EVs have risen in popularity over the last couple of years as more and more nations commit to a greener future. As EVs produce no emissions, many nations have given EV owners more incentives to choose a greener commute over the traditional combustion engine.

THE GREAT GREEN DEBATE With the global impact of climate change, EVs are seen as a greener alternative to combustion engines. The EVs’ lack of carbon emission is the main argument for their adoption to fight climate change. But there is also a question of how green an EV is. Most EVs in the market utilize lithiumion batteries which, by themselves, utilize a significant amount of energy to produce. According to studies, the production of lithium-ion batteries alone constitutes a large part of an EV’s total production carbon footprint, producing

emissions as high as 73kg CO2equivalent per kWh. There’s also the use of cobalt, nickel, manganese, and other rare earth elements the very mining of which significantly damages the earth. There’s also the issue of charging the car. A vast majority of the world still relies on fossil fuels and coal to power its electricity grid. This is by far a larger contributor to climate change than a single combustion engine, right? However, if you are fortunate to be in a country that is shifting to renewable energy, then EVs could be much greener compared to countries solely reliant on traditional energy sources. As for the battery issue, technological advancements in battery recycling present viable solutions for EV batteries living out their automotive lifespans. These “dead” batteries can be resurrected and repurposed to power other devices, or as storage for solar or wind generators.

Cover story GOING FOR A GREENER RIDE The case of adopting EVs as an environmental solution has been bolstered in many countries. Great Britain and France give motorists cash incentives when they purchase a purely electric vehicle, while Norway, the US, and our neighbor Singapore give tax cuts to EV owners. These incentives have allowed EV prices to be competitive with their petrol rivals, giving motorists the option to go green without losing too many dollar greens. Incentives are one way to encourage motorists to shift to electric, but other nations are pushing it one step further.

There are now dozens of countries promising to shift to net-zero, or go carbon neutral. One of the drastic means these countries are adopting to achieve net-zero is by slowly phasing out internal combustion engines. As early as 2030, countries like Denmark and the Netherlands will totally ban internal combustion vehicles. HOW THE PHILIPPINES IS JOINING THE ELECTRIC REVOLUTION While the rest of the world enjoys EVs, the Philippines has a bit of catching up to do. Car manufacturers like Nissan, Volvo, Audi, and Hyundai have only recently introduced EV models to the local market. There’s also

a glaring lack of infrastructure catering to EVs, especially roadside charging stations. All that will change with the recent passage of RA 11697 or the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act, the country’s first EV law, which aims to lay the foundation and infrastructure for EVs in the Philippines. The law offers incentives for owning an EV, like lower tariffs during importation, priority for LTO registration, and exemption from the coding scheme. As for fiscal incentives, although the law includes the lifting of tariffs for EVs, Plug-in Hybrid EVs, and HEVs, these models will still be subject to excise tax under the

TRAIN Law. Whether or not an EV can compete with the pricing of the traditional petrol car is still unsure. Despite the uncertainty of prices, the law is a start. In fact, certain provisions actually mandate the use of EVs in government fleets, as well as the construction of EV-dedicated parking with chargers in certain establishments. This small infrastructure and logistical accommodation is a great start for the country that is behind in EV infrastructure. RATHER THAN DRIVING, HOW ABOUT RIDING On another note, sustainable commuting does not have to be on a

four-wheeler. There’s also a good case for why we should look at electric personal mobility vehicles to ferry us to our destinations. Apart from EVs, electric motorcycles have also become a topic of interest. China and Europe have already embraced the arrival of these electrified motorcycles, while Southeast Asian nations are slowly opening their roads to them. There are also personal mobility devices like electric bikes and electric scooters. These gained popularity during the pandemic, with many blue-collar workers opting to ride a bike to work following the government order to suspend public transport.

TAKING BACK SOME MUCHNEEDED ROAD SPACE As the train and bus system is limited to the main thoroughfares, the lack of Jeepneys and tricycles during the height of the pandemic induced many of our countrymen to go for alternative transportation. AS mentioned earlier, many opted for a bike, mainly due to its affordability. The increase in the riding population brought to light many concerns. Many of our roads are not suitable for bikes and other personal transportation. In fact, prior to 2020, EDSA, the country’s main highway, didn’t have infrastructure on the entire length for the riding public. Thankfully, government agencies are now taking action. The pandemic saw the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) marking out a dedicated biking lane on EDSA. Metro Manila constituent cities followed suit by also establishing bike routes and lanes through their territories. Additionally, the Senate and Congress both have pending bills establishing pathways for personal mobility vehicles like bicycles, and mandating infrastructure to cater to the riding public. Once the law is signed, bikes will have their own road space. E-scooters and E-bikes may also use the dedicated bike lane, with guidelines from the Department of Transportation (DOTr). Even now, they are allowed to use the dedicated bike lanes throughout the metro.

WHY GO LESS TO GAIN MORE A major reason why the bicycles and other electric personal mobility vehicles should be in the conversation is their role in helping decongest the country’s highways. Their emissions are considerably lower as well since you’re charging a smaller battery. Ebikes, the literal electronic bikes, are also good for your health. They’re a form of exercise by themselves with riders still needing to pedal some of the way. But even if we instantly shift to electric right now, it won’t be an instant solution to our environmental and commuting crisis. There is still a need for a more efficient mass transit system that caters to all classes. As people slowly regain the normalcy of pre-pandemic times, the cracks in the lack of efficient mass transport are slowly beginning to show once again with commuters and motorists battling in the little space we have.

public transport the first choice to move around with a mandatory Give Way to Buses scheme, especially on busy roads. At the same time, more metro rails and stations are being built for accessibility and convenience. In contrast, private cars seem to have priority here in the Philippines. While we understand the convenience of driving your own vehicle to work, school, or wherever, we tend to overlook the advantages of public transport. And yes, we understand the hassle of taking public transportation here. However, with green urban planning, proper support, funding, and prioritization from the Philippine government, we can achieve a system like Singapore’s.

ingapore’s public transport is the epitome of transit – with its affordability, convenience, efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability, it is considered among the best in the world. I checked out the Singapore Ministry of Transport policies and regulations, as well as fares and payment structures. I also delved into Singapore’s Green Plan 2030, an extensive plan to achieve sustainable living, development, greener cities, and a greener economy. It includes prioritizing public transport and minimizing private cars on the road to reduce carbon emissions in compliance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement. Interestingly, the system makes

Personally, I think it would be in the public’s best interest for government to focus on making mass transportation more convenient and effective. First, vehicle coding schemes barely work. The same goes for truck bans. Roads remain congested, and public utility vehicles get the blame. For clarification, a report by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) indicates that private vehicles take up 87% of the road and trucks/trailers 3%. Public utility vehicles account for only 10%. Second, our MRT and LRT trains are outdated and lacking. The train system

cannot accommodate the volume of commuters, especially during rush hours. Third, buses suddenly have curfews, and not all provincial buses have access to the city. Lastly, we have unsatisfactory road networks due to poor urban planning, the absence of an environmental and sustainable agenda, and allegations of corruption. In my years of commuting, there have been countless road and highway expansions amounting to billions, but it hasn’t fixed commuter woes. In my opinion, they should focus more on car regulation, building greener

spaces, and applying green urbanism in the city. If it worked for Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Japan, the Netherlands, and others, then it could work for our country too. While it is now simply more comfortable and convenient to rent a condominium or an apartment near work, we should explore other options for moving around. Cycling and walking Aside from its health benefits, cycling is a good way to travel to work especially when you’re just 30 minutes to an hour away from work or school, and walking

An event gathering local and regional governments worldwide to tackle local sustainable development issues, the World Congress also spotlights the vital environmental initiatives of the host city. For Malmö, one of the sectors it is focusing on is its transport network. Specifically, the city has made it a point to design streets that are accessible and equitable to pedestrians and bikers looking to go from A to B.

Experiencing the city for over a week, here are some of the things that were e to someone like me who’s used to the commuting perils of Metro Manila. City Streets Made for Pedestrians and Cyclists Malmö fits nicely into the concept of a 15-minute city. This urban planning concept essentially means that everything you might need is accessible with just a 15-minute walk or bike ride. Housing, work, groceries—all of these and more should be just a stone’s throw away from one another. Playing a major role in Malmö’s active transport initiatives are its dedicated pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. The former involves cobbled and paved sidewalks, which are very wide. These are complemented by clearly marked pedestrian crosswalks and pedestrian signal lights at busy crossings. These

signal lights also have capacitive push buttons and audible ticking timers, making them very friendly for people with disabilities. The most surprising part was that vehicles don’t race you at a crosswalk; they always slow down and stop a good distance from crosswalks if they see you. For cycling, the city boasts a robust network of over 530km of protected and unprotected bike lanes and over 140 bicycle crossings [hyperlink: https:// talkofthecities.iclei.org/5-reasons-toembrace-the-bicycle-as-malmo-pedalsforward-a-leading-cycling-city/]. Service stations, air pumps, racks, and bike rentals are also aplenty around the city, with three dedicated bicycle garages capable of housing 6,000 bikes serving those who bike to catch their trains at the city’s three main stations. Cyclists can also bring their bikes— whether folding or not—aboard the trains if they so choose. As proof of

Public Transport for Journeys Within and Outside the City Getting to Malmö from the Copenhagen, Denmark Airport (the closest international airport to the city) is quickly done via a high-speed train which provides a gorgeous view of the Öresund Strait for the first half of the journey before burrowing underneath the sea into a tunnel for the second half, and then emerging into the City of Malmö. Besides serving flying passengers, the train also facilitates in-city travel between the outskirt area of Hyllie, the downtown area of Triangeln, and the harbor area of Malmö Central. Trains are long, wide, and spacious enough to comfortably fit many passengers and cargo (and even bicycles) simultaneously. They stick to a predictable and regular schedule, ensuring those heading to their appointments are on time. Head outside the Central Station, and you’ll be greeted by a long bus stop

These snakes feature wide doors, low floors, and wide corridors to make them friendly to commuters carrying luggage, strollers, and grocery carts. Like the trains, the buses arrive and depart at key stations based on a predictable schedule. Can It Work In the Philippines? Of course, it can be argued that due to its cold climate, Malmö is automatically friendlier to commuters; that biking or walking to work in Metro Manila is a sweaty and arduous engagement. But there are studies that show that temperature is not a significant factor in active transport [https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/ full/10.1080/25741292.2019.16658 57]. Rather, safety (against vehicles and hazardous road conditions), spacious and dedicated lanes (not mixing pedestrians and bikers), and

convenience (availability of parking racks, repair stations, long continuous bike lanes, showers, and changing rooms) are also critical factors in people choosing to walk or to cycle. Implementing such a robust transportation network in a Philippine city definitely won’t be a 15-minute affair. Infrastructure, policy, economic, cultural, and social factors all come into play. How can we encourage cars, buses, bikers, and pedestrians to respectfully share the roads with one another? Where can you put dedicated infrastructure if the concrete jungle is already set in stone? How do you ensure that drivers and small businesses affected by the major shift in transportation are not left behind? How do you handle the chaos and confusion of this transition? Hopefully, in this lifetime, we’ll be able to see more cities in the country making significant strides towards being truly bike- and pedestriancentric.

Toyota, which contributes to global mobility with about 10 million cars annually, continuously promotes a wide range of initiatives to address the serious environmental issues that affect the world today. When Toyota launched the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050 or TEC2050 globally in October 2015, the company specified two pillars to the goal: going beyond zero environmental impact and achieving a net positive impact in the communities that it serves. Whereas going beyond zero environmental impact means taking on the challenge to reduce the environmental burden attributed to car manufacturing to as close to zero as possible, achieving a net positive impact means that the impact on the environment should outweigh the actions taken to reduce such impacts.

As an automaker, Toyota promotes its HEV technology as one of the ways it is working toward zero environmental impact while still being able to provide for the mobility needs of its customers. When it comes to HEV adoption, the readiness to adopt alternative vehicle solutions, which includes sufficient education about electric vehicles or EVs; and government support, such as incentives and infrastructure that would make it more worthwhile to own one, affect the speed and degree by which

Locally, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) launched its first HEV, the Prius, in 2009 as a greener alternative to its lineup of traditional combustion engine vehicles. However, while it was received well as a concept, it seemed the local market was not ready to adopt the relatively new technology. However, TMP would not stop there, and in the succeeding years, it would double its efforts to educate more people about HEV technology. In 2019, it held the Toyota Hybrid Technology Conference and went on a series of Hybrid Campus Tours to raise awareness and open discussion about the benefits of HEVs for the Philippine society.

The production of Hybrid Electric Vehicles or HEVs falls under the TEC2050’s first pillar as it aims to reduce the global average of CO2 emissions from new vehicles by 90 percent compared to Toyota’s 2010 levels. While it is the collective goal of Toyota affiliates June 2022

are applied, an electronically controlled brake system uses kinetic energy to charge the electric motor’s battery. A common misconception about HEVs is that it has to be plugged in. However, because of this system, HEVs actually have a selfcharging electric motor, which doesn’t need an external power source. With the current environment setting of the Philippines, HEVs are the most practical option as the country anticipates the adoption of fully electric vehicles. The hybrid in its name refers to how the vehicle combines two sources of energy propulsion. TMP, in particular, carries a lineup of HEVs that harness the power of a conventional gas engine and an electric motor. At low and mid-range speeds, and at full stop, the vehicle makes use of the electric motor, minimizing fuel consumption. At normal speeds, the computer-controlled engine system adapts according to the requirements of the driver, switching between the gas engine, electric motor, and a combination of both as needed. During rapid acceleration, the engine adds power to the electric motor and simultaneously charges the HEV battery. Finally, when brakes

like the Philippines where infrastructure for fully electric vehicles is yet to be developed. The Corolla Altis Hybrid has an average fuel consumption of 22.7 km/L, while its gas counterpart delivers 15.4 km/L. [1] The more fuel consumed, the more CO2 is being emitted. An HEV, therefore, is not only more fuel-efficient but more eco-friendly as well. Globally, Toyota has reduced CO2 emissions by 139 million tons with its HEVs[2], and with the growing support for HEVs in the Philippines and similar markets, it may see this number rise exponentially in the coming years. The road toward greener commutes is a long one, but not an impossible one. And while automakers, including Toyota, are endeavoring to roll out fully electric vehicles as an answer to the problem of rising greenhouse gases, HEVs, as well as BEVs, PHEVs, and FCEVs, are playing a significant role in paving the way toward a wider acceptance of EVs as they enlighten communities about their environmental benefits and serve as the readily available solution. Very distinct on the sides are the bigger 17-inch wheels and larger side sill garnish. Stepping inside, Mitsubishi’s “Horizontal Axis” design identity was applied to the dashboard for a more robust feel. This is complemented by accents of soft padded materials with real stitches. At the driver’s seat, the tilt and telescopic steering wheel — aside from its now more modern styling — has been restructured with a compact center to enable a better grip. Behind it, a new meter cluster and dynamic opening graphic have been incorporated.

Comfort and Peace of Mind

Hard to miss is the patented 7-inch Smartphone-link Display Audio (SDA3), a touchscreen infotainment system that supports hands-free functions and is compatible w both Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto. Below is a new easyto-understand digital LCD A/C panel that matches the overall aesthetic. For greater convenience, the front console has been converted into a larger capacity open tray while retaining the 12V outlet and USB port. Down the center is the new floor console with armrest that can hold a tissue pack on the back of its lid and four 600 mlsized bottles in the main space. The layout of the console cupholders has been reoriented sideways and now have a

larger circumference. All these offer better organization and space maximization. In the second row, one TYPE-A and one TYPE-C USB ports are embedded on the back of the console. The rear A/C dial and louver now also have more inviting colors and cupholders have been placed o the seat armrest. All these form part of the improvements to overall ergonomics. Customer favorites such as the easy-folding seat mechanisms, front row and luggage under trays, multi-function seat-back pockets, and third-row power outlets are still included With all seats up, this 7-seater has more than enough room for full-size adults plus luggage. Seats are configured to have more hip-width and ample room from head to toe while being able to fit four 4-gallon water bottles or a stroller directly behind the last row. With seats folded, the cargo deck is flat with no gaps or protruding parts for versatility at its finest, making it easier to transport bikes, potted plants, or even furniture as needed. The New Xpander is still the only one in the category equipped with Cruise Control, that aids in reducing fatigue on long trips. A reverse camera has also been included to help provide more visibility while backing up.

Drivability and Utility

Steering and suspension settings have also been optimized in the New Xpander. The enlarged rear absorber along with extra front and rear springs and high-performance valves result in a flatter and more comfortable ride even on winding roads. Moreover, a steering wheel return control was integrated for better maneuverability at low speeds to relieve driver stress.

Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) and Brake Auto Hold (BAH) buttons are now part of the shift panel. For increased relaxation particularly during traffic situations, the former aside from its basic function holding the brakes, automatically adjusts clamping force when vehicle motion is detected, and the latter, if stationary, does not require a foot down on the pedal. These, together with Active Stability Control (ASC), Hill Start Assist (HSA), and Traction Control (TCL), now come standard for the GLS A/T variant. oday, people yearn for the media of yesteryear because it reminds them of better times. To quench the thirst for nostalgia, various content creators have remade, remastered, or rebooted old TV shows, movies, and especially video games. But what about the video games that can’t be rebooted for one reason or another? Perhaps the developer(s) and/or publisher(s) are out of business,

or everyone has moved on and left these games to the sands of time. Some are still available for purchase on a console’s online store or somewhere on Steam. As for others that are lying somewhere in the graveyard of video games? There is still demand for those games. Fans may be playing them on an emulator or an old console, but the fans still want something, anything to quench the thirst of nostalgia.

The Suikoden series has left a lasting impression on the minds of millions of fans, and fans wanted more in an ever-expanding universe. The former developers of the series formed their own studio and launched a Kickstarter during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, raising USD500,000 in a mere two hours. This marks the first collaboration between Suikoden developers Yoshitaka Murayama and Junko Kawano in 25 years. I did not expect much from Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising, as the full game will be released in 2023, but it serves as a nice appetizer to the main course that we will eventually get. You start off as CJ, a treasure hunter that finds herself in the town of New Nevaeh, a forgotten mining town in a remote area of the game’s universe. After an earthquake, ancient ruins surfaced, and many people came to the town to get rich. CJ eventually becomes involved in exploring these ruins, making new friends in the sword-wielding kangaroo Garoo and New Nevaeh acting mayor Isha. CJ helps rebuild the town to not only

accommodate those who came to the town to hunt for treasure (the Outlanders), but those who are also living in the town as well. Many of your quests center around rebuilding the town. At the same time, you can explore several dungeons to farm for materials to upgrade your weapons, armor, and accessories, and enhance places like the inn, tavern,

and other vendors available in the game. The story revolves around the main quest, but you can also pick up a number of side quests and play mini-games (such as fishing) to pass the time. While the game isn’t terribly hard, it’s also very repetitive. Combat evolves as you upgrade your gear, and you can link together attacks to defeat powerful enemies. Some enemies can only be hit with certain attacks (Garoo

can break shields, while Isha can attack flying enemies with magic barriers) in an action-style RPG reminiscent of traditional 2D sidescrollers. Dungeons have checkpoints in them, so you can quickly travel back to any part of the dungeon if needed, saving time and effort that could easily add hours and hours t the game and the frustration of having to travel all the way back after getting so far. The art style reflects Suikoden’s influence as well: the Trading Post has the same exact logo, and characters are clearly influenced by the iconic (yet terribly underrated) game. Aside from that, you can complete the game in a mere 20-25 hours; even completionists like myself will spend about one and a half days total of game time at most. To compare that with the series that spawned this successor, the shortest game took about 20 hours, and the longer games took between 40-50 hours to complete. While this game was a reward for reaching a Kickstarter stretch goal, it raises the expectations for Hundred Heroes will definitely be much higher.

Supercomputer for Artificial Intelligence Education T

he Analytics, Computing, and Complex Systems Laboratory at the Asian Institute of Management (ACCeSs@AIM) houses a supercomputer that’s the fastest in the Philippines, with computing speeds of up to 1.2-petaflops. This computer was donated in 2018 by Stan Shih, Acer Group co-founder and honorary chairman, and chairman of Stan Shih Foundation. Acer is a Taiwanese tech giant, while AIM is considered the top business school for higher learning in the Philippines. The donation was made to support the upgrade of educational facilities and equipment at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) at its then newly established Analytics, Computing, and Complex Systems Lab, which leads and promotes data science, artificial intelligence, and various computational models to drive innovations. The donation included four Altos R480 F4 GPU servers powered by Intel® Xeon® processor paired with NVIDIA® GTX1080Ti X and 256GB DDR4-2400 RAM, SG 2TB 6Gb/s 2.5” SATA 7200rpm HDD, and 480G 2.5” SATA S3520 Series SSD along with eight AST D280 servers powered by Intel® Xeon® Cascade 6126 processor, NVIDIA® GTX1080Ti X, and 256GB DDR4-2400 RAM, SG 2TB 6Gb/s 2.5” SATA HDD and 480G 2.5” S4510 Enterprise SSD, which significantly increases computing performance.

With the Acer supercomputer, MSDS students have successfully completed industry projects and capstone projects such as healthcare-related demand prediction, grassroots micro-lending, and job applicant performance prediction. The supercomputer upgrade and aiForge access are also used by Ph.D. students for their courses and research, pushing the boundaries in various fields such as computational linguistics, urban analytics, traffic modeling and optimization, forecasting, and computational social science. With the donation from Acer, AIM has been able to attract strong Ph.D. candidates and students while expanding collaborations nationally and internationally. A total of 124 students are using the Acer supercomputer.

There are seven courses in the MSDS program using the machine: Programming in Data Science, Mathematics in Data Science, Data Mining and Wrangling, Big Data Cloud and Computing, Machine Learnings 1, 2, and 3, and Applied Computational Statistics. Two courses (Model Thinking, Algorithms, Computations, and Advanced Time Series Analysis) in the Ph.D. in DS program have also benefitted from Acer’s donation, especially in delivering their demo lectures and final projects. “The support given by the Acer Foundation has helped and will continue to help AIM champion industrygovernment-academia partnerships through research and development and technopreneurship, which in turn will support its goal of becoming one of the Top 5 Business Schools in Asia in the next ten years,” said Professor Christopher Monterola, the Aboitiz chair in data science and executive managing director of ACCeSs@AIM. “We at Acer believe in the work of ACCeSs@AIM in educating and guiding the country’s present and future business leaders and in leveling up the fields of data science, artificial intelligence, and computational modeling in the Philippines,” said Sue Ong-Lim, general manager of Acer Philippines.

STREETCAR Words by Jose Alvarez

ne of the more unique modes of transportation, the streetcar, bridged the gap between traveling on horseback and traveling via train. Before 1800, people generally walked or traveled on horseback, while the Industrial Revolution saw the advent of more efficient forms of transportation such as trains. There was a train system on every continent (save Antarctica) by the beginning of the 20th century, and streetcar services were also common in many cities. By the middle of the 20th century, many streetcars vanished, with only a few remaining as tourist attractions. Why did the streetcar suddenly disappear? The very first streetcar service began in 1832 in New York City, when a wealthy banker, John Mason, financed its construction. John Stephenson built this streetcar, and it ran along Bowery Street. New Orleans soon followed up with their own streetcar service in 1835. The streetcar was composed of a driver, who rode up front to drive the horses and had a brake that could stop the streetcar. In the back was a conductor, who collected fares and helped passengers get on and off, while signaling the driver that he could proceed or not. After the Civil War, many larger cities sought to create a way to eliminate the use of horses in streetcars and use machines to June 2022

power this new form of transportation. While cable cars had existed as far back as the 16th century in Austria (generally called a funicular), these were used for commercial and industrial purposes, typically hauling raw materials over steep inclines. For passenger purposes, however, it would take until 1873 to devise a machine that would help cars move along, using an overhead cable that would guide the car around corners and even up and down hills. One of the most famous examples is the cable car in San Francisco, which was the first city to run cable cars. Given the presence of steep hills in the city, it was more practical than using horses or walking around on foot. The cable car is still in operation today, albeit as a tourist attraction. Chicago also had an extensive fleet of cable cars, as did many large cities in the late 19th century. Frank Sprague, who had worked under famous inventor Thomas Edison, decided to use electricity to run streetcars in Richmond, Virginia, in 1888. Streetcars, then, would touch an electric wire with a long pole on the roof, while steam engines would turn huge generators to produce the electricity needed. These were called trolley cars. The streetcar wasn’t just limited to North America. Many cities across Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia built streetcar services. However, the high cost of maintaining streetcar systems and the advent of a new technology (the car) would

soon put many streetcar systems out of service around the world. Although cars existed alongside streetcars for the first half of the 20th century, the car began to replace the streetcar due to the freedom one had when driving their own car. In hilly cities such as San Francisco, the streetcar lasted slightly longer than in flatter cities like Chicago. Some cities opted to modernize their streetcar systems instead of scrapping them entirely. In fact, French president Georges Pompidou declared that “the city must adapt to the car” by 1971. But did the streetcar really die? Think about all the traffic congestion and pollution that cars had brought about, especially since many cars used leaded gas until the mid-1990s. In Germany, they built new tram lines as light rail in the 1970s, rapidly building streetcar systems after reunification in 1990. Canada (Edmonton and Calgary) and the United States (San Diego) followed shortly afterward. The United Kingdom (Tyneside, London, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, London) also brought back streetcars between 1980 and 2000. France, repudiating Pompidou’s statement, also brought back streetcars in several cities in the same period. Australia, which once had one of the most extensive streetcar systems historically, also brought back streetcars as light rail. gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
