VR HEADSETS

Oculus/Meta Quest 2

Recently, talks about the metaverse have exploded, thanks to Facebook changing its name to meta and announcing its goal of creating a metaverse. A metaverse is a merger of the digital and physical world, where an individual has his own identity and avatar in the digital world. The metaverse is still far off, but merging the physical and digital has been around quite a while now. It’s called Virtual Reality and VR headsets have been getting cheaper and more accessible. Case in point, the Oculus/Meta Quest 2. March 2022

24

gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

The Meta Quest 2 has been around for more than a year now. A new base model with 128GB of onboard memory was released around August-September 2021, and this was the model I bought. Looks-wise the Quest 2 looks about the same as the original Quest. Minor changes in the shape of the headpiece have been introduced, with the cameras slightly more even on the base of the headpiece. Another change is the head strap with the new version utilizing a garter style compared to the elastic on the original. Of course, there’s also the color scheme, with the new model sporting a White color scheme compared to the original’s black.

XR2 chip, specially designed for VR headsets. It’s way faster than the original’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. The Quest 2 has 6GB of RAM and now either 128GB or 256GB of internal storage. The XR2 processor is the Quest 2’s backbone and allows it to be a standalone VR headset, not needing a PC to run games. Don’t expect any hardcore realistic graphics from it though. VR hardware, unless connected to a PC, still does not have that realistic ray-traced graphics that gamers drool for. But

the gameplay is still an experience that I’ll go back to later. Another massive change in the Quest 2 is the higher resolution per eye. It now has an 1832 x 1920 resolution per eye. Although still experimental, it now also has 120Hz support.

As for the controller, it’s almost the same as the original, although many have pointed out that it offers a much better grip. The rest of the changes are in the Quest 2’s hardware.

user experience Prior to the Quest 2, my only experience with VR was the Google Cardbox VR that utilizes your phone and lens to emulate a VR experience. I had my doubts about what VR and VR gaming would be like, but after trying out the Quest 2 I was stunned at what the technology can offer. One thing to also note about VR graphics is that it’s not the most hardcore and intense. Yet the technology behind it allows users, especially first-timers, to feel that what they are seeing is real enough. A perfect example would be the game Richie’s Plank Experience where, despite knowing that the plank is fake and you’re not at the top of a high-rise building, VR tricks your brain into believing that you’ll somehow fall to your death if you walk towards the edge. I think that is amazing!

Another great thing about the Quest 2 is that aside from being a stand-alone VR headset, you can also hook it up to a PC and play PC VR games. The Quest 2 can either be wired with a USB Type C cable or connected via Wi-Fi through the Oculus Air Link support, for which you’ll need to install the Oculus program on your VR PC. Another thing to note about the Air Link is that you need at least a 5.0GHz Wi-Fi connection and that the PC is connected to the internet via an Ethernet cable. You can use a Wi-Fi connection on your PC but

expect some frame drops and lag from time to time. There are some minor inconveniences with the Quest 2. The battery only lasts 2 hours so you’ll want to use a power bank and a long USB C to continue playing beyond that or wait around 2 hours for a full charge. Also, the speaker is decent but not great. It also leaks at max volume, so have earphones ready. Last but not least, the head strap can hurt during extended use. Thankfully, it’s replaceable from a huge third-party market.

It’s hard to explain what VR on the Quest 2 is like for people who haven’t tried VR. It’s one of those things that you need to experience for yourself. And I assure you, you won’t regret it.

Bluetooth Speakerphone

The Epos Expand 30T is a portable Bluetooth speakerphone that’s positioned to enhance the collaboration experience. Over the past two years due to remote work conditions, we have gotten used to spending hours online attending virtual events or talking to colleagues. In fact, headsets and earbuds have become essential accessories much like the keyboard and mouse. Let’s see how this speakerphone improves the work setting. March 2022

design The Epos Expand 30T is a black and silver disc-shaped speakerphone that’s about 120mm in diameter, 37mm high, and weighs 314g. The top surface consists mainly of the stainless steel mesh grill encircled by a soft black rubber material containing the control buttons and LED indicators. The upper rim is edged in stainless steel, while the sides and bottom are all made of hard black plastic.

The way the bottom is designed points to the premium quality of the device. First, the USB-C charging cord is wound around a groove that keeps it neatly in place. Then, there’s the USB Bluetooth dongle slotted in its storage nook. Other thoughtful inclusions in the box are the USB-C to USB-A adapter, and the carrying pouch.

hardware The heart of the Epos Expand 30T is an ultra-low distortion speaker complemented by two echo- and noisecanceling digital MEMS microphones that have 360-degree coverage. Bluetooth 5.0 supports simultaneous connection to 2 devices, with a range of up to 25m. A third device can be connected via USB-C. The battery can be fully charged in 3h20m for up to 18-hours of talk time.

wearing an audio device, attending hourslong meetings was less tiring.

Most of us have carried on these past two years by working remotely, spending a great deal of time attending virtual meetings, or collaborating online on group tasks. Personally, I’ve used overear headphones, in-ear earbuds, bone conduction headsets, wired, wireless, noise-canceling, etc. — a whole gamut of audio devices for that optimal experience. Each has its pros and cons, so I was eager to try out the Epos Expand 30T when a test unit became available.

The microphones are also excellent. I recorded a voice-over audio clip for a corporate presentation on the Epos Expand 30T, and it came across crisp and clear.

After about a month of use, I think I’ve found the perfect audio-conferencing device for my particular needs. First, it gets a plus for multi-device connectivity, pairing simultaneously via Bluetooth to my iPad and iPhone, and via USB-C to my Macbook Pro — a single speaker to use for online meetings on my desktop, watching videos on the iPad, or taking calls on my phone. Switching between devices is mostly seamless, although there are occasional connection drops. Audio quality is outstanding, especially in virtual meetings. Voices sound natural with minimal background noise and distortions. Also, without the bother of

I’m a news junkie and like having the news playing in the background while I’m working. The clear voice reproduction on the Expand 30T makes listening to CNN or Al Jazeera more pleasant. Although not a stereo speaker, its dynamic equalizer and bass enhancement also allows it to deliver good audio for music and multimedia. Finally, I look forward to bringing along the Epos Expand 30T to in-person meetings where I can share it for instant small group conferencing.

Powerful Processors

More graphics power!

Color accurate screens

It comes as no surprise that digital creatives need a powerful device. You want to have a powerful processor especially when you’re in the process of either creating unique 3D graphics with ultra-realistic textures or video editing with massive files.

You can’t spell graphic art without graphics… cards that it is! Having a powerful graphics card is a must when you want to make extensive graphic designs. What sets apart a normal laptop from a creative workstation is its graphic computing prowess.

A powerful multi-core processor can split the work between its performance cores leading to shorter render time. Meaning you can do more instead of waiting for your files to finish rendering (which is usually the drag). The newest Intel 12th Gen mobile processor is specially made for multi-tasking creatives with its unique architecture with Efficiency Cores (E-cores) and powerful Performance Cores (P-cores).

When it comes to graphic design, 3D rendering, or even professional video editing, having the latest graphics card is a definite must, like the newest NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3000-series graphics cards. The new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3000-series along with its NVIDIA Creator Ready drivers is specially made for creatives looking for more performance out of their devices.

Last but not the least, a creative needs a machine that matches his special needs. This is where creativecentric laptops are separated from the rest of the pack. A creative’s laptop typically has better, color-accurate displays to aid him in color-sensitive jobs.

Having a monitor that covers the DCI-P3 color gamut is typically recommended since it provides more vibrant colors compared to a standard sRGB monitor. Of course, it also helps to have a monitor with a higher resolution not just FHD (1920 x 1080) to fully appreciate and see the difference.

Following consumer behavior trends, the growing interest in personal health and wellness has created a paradigm shift towards the development and innovation of newer technology for personal healthcare. As people become more health-conscious and aware of their bodies, the market for wearable fitness devices has grown rapidly; these devices perform functions ranging from basic computing to health tracking and monitoring. Wearable technology has evolved over the years, as companies have produced newer and more advanced devices. Smartwatches were the first new form of wearable tech introduced. They were quickly followed by a steady stream of new wearables such as smart glasses, smart clothing, smart jewelry, and head-mounted displays (HMDs). Additionally, wearable technology is also being applied to other areas, such as surgeries — with implantables used in medical applications. Healthcare technology is growing at a rapid pace, resulting in more efficient and effective methods for diagnosing and treating patients. Medical practitioners can diagnose patients faster using wearable devices, allowing for more effective treatments.

HEALTHCARE BEYOND THE HOSPITAL THE FUTURE OF TELEMEDICINE

T

elemedicine or telehealth has a long history dating back to the late 1800s. It started with doctors consulting via telegram, then telephone, radio, email, and today, through video call or app-based consultation. Despite its long history, telehealth is dynamically evolving — now more than ever. Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth has seen a massive boost in the Philippines, with patients opting to consult via the internet or phone instead of going to the hospital.

March 2022

There are many possible reasons why telehealth has grown since the pandemic. It may be because people are afraid of going to hospitals due to fear of exposure to the virus. Others say it’s a social responsibility to avoid direct contact with other people when one is exhibiting symptoms. It could also be that the technology and timing were ripe, and the internet now allows faster and longer connections to doctors. But whatever the reason may be, telehealth will stay and even grow.

44

gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

Telehealth before and after the pandemic

Before the COVID 19 pandemic, telehealth was a niche area. There were just limited dedicated apps or programs tailor-made for telehealth. Patients who wanted a quick consultation would rather go to a clinic than use an app. Once the pandemic arrived, there was significant growth in telehealth usage and platforms. Now apps like KonsultaMD offer 24/7 telehealth consultation without need for an appointment. Even the government helped create telehealth services to hospitals, such as the one used in PGH and the notable Bayanihan E-Consulta project from the Office of the Vice President. The two projects were aimed at helping patients connect to doctors to determine if they have COVID 19 or to consult about other health concerns in the safety of their homes. It also helped lessen the load of hospitals struggling with the influx of patients since most outpatient consultations could be done remotely.

Advances in communications technology have also been instrumental in the continuing evolution of telehealth services.

How is telehealth changing? Technology is transforming telehealth, from 5G connectivity enabling stronger connections to wearable technology that allows your physician to monitor your condition without your physical presence at the clinic. What’s in the future for telehealth?

Wearables to track your body, remotely

Wearables are a great way to track your body functions. The latest smartwatches now have monitors to check your blood pressure or your blood oxygen level (like an oximeter). Beyond smartwatches, there are now bio wearables that provide indepth tracking of your body, like glucose levels, ketamine, and even blood alcohol levels.

45

These new generations of wearables can be used to transmit your data to your physician for better insight at the inner workings of your body.

AI to decode your body

Hand in hand with wearables, AI development will complement telehealth. AI can rapidly decode and decide on the course of action a patient can do prior to his consultation. On the other end, AI can help doctors quickly analyze and organize the massive amount of data generated by wearables. They can help organize the results for easy organization and may even facilitate early diagnosis. At the back end, AI can also help organize the clinic setup. Telehealth will one day be used to book a proper consultation, with AI helping to organize queuing, answer quick FAQ, and even schedule consultations.

“At the back end, AI can also help organize the clinic setup. Telehealth will one day be used to book a proper consultation, with AI helping to organize queuing, answer quick FAQ, and even schedule consultations.” Beyond the personal

Telehealth is not limited to doctor-to-patient interaction. Telehealth is also making an impact behind the scenes. Video conferencing is used by doctors to easily collaborate with fellow practitioners in patient treatment. It allows doctors to communicate quickly with fellow doctors in case of dire circumstances. Video conferencing allows the doctor to offer medical opinions to colleagues after seeing the patient through video. Neither is it limited to doctorto-doctor collaboration. Video conferencing is also useful for the medical training of future doctors. Residents can quickly call on their attending doctor for a second opinion in tricky cases. Doctors can also guide residents on what to do in emergency situations if he is not physically present.

Another telehealth application is technical support, particularly in areas that lack expertise. A prime example of this is if a provincial hospital receives a new scanning machine (let’s say an MRI), they can ask fellow technicians via video conference to help guide them through difficult situations like for specific area scans. Doctors likewise can specifically ask and immediately see scans through new telehealth tools and video conferencing.

Bringing healthcare to the home

Of the future uses of telehealth, the most important is the prospect of completely bringing healthcare to the home. From current chronic consultations, we can soon see 24/7 intensive care monitoring via telehealth. It can also provide holistic care covering everything from physical, dental, and even mental health. You can consult with doctors about anything without leaving your house. In the future, clinical tests canl also be done remotely, with clinics being booked by apps or online for home sample collecting. Then, we can all truly be healthy at home.

f being round counts, then I have been in shape almost all my life. Cute and pudgy as a kid, I was able to maintain that physique through a strict regimen of fast food, desserts, and extra rice. When the pandemic struck, I countered early-onset cabin fever with even more gluttonous eating. So much so that I tipped the scales at 110kg at my heaviest. The result? Years of suffering through sleep apnea, easily being winded by short walks, and constant fatigue, just to name a few. Luckily, one day after a few pandemic months, something just clicked and I decided that I did not want to live that way anymore. I wanted a long, healthy life, and a likewise healthy relationship with food. Over one and a half years later, I’m now 40kg lighter through a consistent routine of exercise and healthy eating. I’ve learned many things throughout my fitness journey, and below are some tried and tested things that you should find helpful if you are just starting yours (DISCLAIMER: If you have any underlying health issues, then you should consult with a physician or dietician before starting and during your fitness journey.)

49

March 2022

Cover story Focus on small but doable changes to get where you want to be Short of losing limbs, there is simply no way you can go from 110kg to 70kg overnight, nor even over a month. Unrealistic thinking like that is bound to force you into sudden, unhealthy, and unsustainable practices. It is called a fitness journey for a reason—you are going to be at it for a long time. Think of it as a marathon and not a sprint. Myself, I set small monthly goals that did not involve forcing myself into starvation. I initially started out by promising to only eat one cup of rice per meal and substituting sugar-laced desserts for fruits. By eating roughly the same amount of food but with healthier pickings, I was able to see consistent, weekly weight loss of a few hundred grams or so. These small steps then motivated me to be more consistent in the long run.

Get a food scale and measuring cups Weight loss is basically calories in versus calories out, or what you eat versus what you burn. The “calories in” part involves accurately measuring what you’re eating. It means weighing solid food by the gram, and measuring liquids by the milliliter. You’ll need a food weighing scale for the former and measuring cups for the latter. Sure, they are not as sexy as fitness watches but trust me: these will do wonders for your journey. You will no longer have to guess what one serving actually means, taking away the risk of either over- or under-eating. Pair this with the next step and you’re golden.

March 2022

50

gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

Download a calorie tracking app Measuring food goes hand in hand with tracking the calories they provide. For this, you’ll need a calorie tracking app. The most popular one is MyFitnessPal, but I find that its crowdsourced food database leaves much to be desired. I personally use Cronometer as its database is better curated, it’s more user-friendly, and it offers a more intuitive means of viewing your calorie and nutrient intake. On top of these functionalities, most calorie trackers can also tell you how many calories you need based on your current height, weight, activity level, and weight loss goal. Want to lose 0.25kg per week? Just input these in the settings and the app will automatically tell you how many calories in total you should eat daily, along with how many calories you have left for the day as you add more food to your log.

Get a fitness band and do follow along workouts For the calories out portion, you’ll need to do exercise. If you’re stuck at home without access to gym equipment, then followalong workouts on YouTube are a great place to start. You can dip your toe in the pool with low-intensity walking videos, then level up to full-body and high-intensity interval exercises once you have gotten the hang of things. Just don’t push yourself too hard too quickly or you might end up passed out on the floor. A great way to make these workouts scientific is with a fitness band. Higher-end models (like Fitbits and Apple Watches) have fancier tech which allows them to more accurately track your heart rate, oxygen levels, and calories burned. More affordable ones (like those from Xiaomi or Realme) may not be as accurate, but they can still give you rough numbers without breaking the bank. Those calories that you burned? You can input them into your app of choice and ta-da! You now have enough wiggle room to fit one small piece of chocolate as a reward for your hard work.

TOYOTA RAV4 HYBRID A REVOLUTIONARY ICON EVOLVES

March 2022

R

ecreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel Drive — that’s what RAV4 stood for. First introduced to the world almost three decades ago, it pioneered a new type of vehicle, embracing new technologies and creating a whole new market for a compact, agile, and versatile SUV ideally designed for modern life.

It single-handedly created the compact sports utility vehicle segment, bridging what was then a gap between traditional off-road and regular passenger vehicles. It was unique, a favored height, ground clearance, and a robust look of a four-wheel drive. Since then, it has reshaped the automotive marketplace. In 2020, the RAV4 joined the top Toyota models that have surpassed 10,000,000-units sold globally. This, in 26 years and over five iterations since its introduction. In the Philippines, the RAV4 has been a constant challenger in its segment. Driven by the principle of Kaizen, or continuous improvement, it only bettered itself to achieve quality, performance, and practicality. And this year, the RAV4 takes the stage again,

61

evolving into something much more purposeful. Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) is excited to announce the official arrival of the New RAV4 Hybrid. Posing an invitation to evolve everyone’s drive, this SUV is equipped with exciting upgrades, including a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) system, all well fitted inside the design customers have enjoyed and loved. “The rapid succession of Toyota’s HEV model introductions in the country is an indicator that Hybrid cars are now mainstream. Filipinos are ready for energy-efficient mobility options with fewer emissions, and Hybrids offer choices that are practical and ready to use in our existing infrastructure and road conditions,” said Sherwin Chualim, TMP first vice-president for vehicle sales operations.

MOBILITY

The New RAV4 HEV comes in two variants LTD and XLE, each carrying a set of features that fit the driver’s need. Under the hood, it houses a 16-Valve DOHC, 4-Cylinder, In-line with VVTiE for intake, and VVT-I for exhaust, with a displacement of 2,487cc, coupled with a Hybrid system that dynamically works together for fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. It also sports MacPherson Strut and Double Wishbone suspensions developed under the Toyota New Global Architecture program, which helps optimize ride and handling performance. It works together with the 18” (LTD) or 17” (XLE) alloy wheel that exudes the sporty look the RAV4 is known for. At the swing of the door, drivers are welcomed with an illuminated entry system; followed by a view of the gleaming design that guarantees to stand out thanks to its premium interiors that ensure class and comfort in every drive. At the center of it all is a 7” display audio with 6-speaker output March 2022

and is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, all for a complete entertaining experience while driving. It also has a wireless charger for tangle-free phone management. Sustainability and safety go hand in hand with the New RAV4 Hybrid. With Toyota Safety Sense included, it helps drivers avoid potentially dangerous situations and keep everyone secure. These features consist of Pre-Collision System, Automatic High Beam, Lane Tracing Assist, Lane Departure Alert, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. The LTD variant comes with a Blind Spot Monitor, which gives an extra set of eyes on nearing vehicles, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert that notifies the driver whenever someone passes at the back while reversing. Both variants come pre-installed with a camera with Panoramic View Monitor for the LTD, and Back Guides for the XLE. Like the rest of the hybrid line-up, the RAV4 Hybrid is a practical entry point towards electrification. With its selfcharging electric battery, there’s no need

62

to worry about the car running out of power or getting stranded. When the car’s battery runs low, it automatically switches to gas motor and goes on to charge the battery without needing to be plugged into an outlet. The gas motor kicks in only when needed (such as in power-demanding road conditions). This makes for an added environmental benefit as there’s less need to charge and consume electricity. Plus, the RAV4’s hybrid battery comes with an 8-year warranty. The adoption of the HEV products remains to be TMP’s priority as electrified vehicles can only make a more positive impact through widespread use. The introduction of RAV4 HEV makes a case for the expanding line-up to cater to varying needs of the market. This also aligns with Toyota president Akio Toyoda’s mission to contribute to the preservation of the environment, producing happiness for everyone. This is driven by the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, which gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

aims to achieve zero CO2 emissions and a net positive environmental impact. The six challenges initiated encompass Toyota’s entire operations, from the manufacture of new vehicles to plant emission, entire vehicle life cycle, water usage optimization, recycling technologies Variant

he Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is set to hold its inaugural sanctioned gravel world championships series, with the first event to take place in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija, in the Philippines on April 03, 2022. The Trek UCI Gravel World Series will serve as its alternative off-road version for the premier UCI Gran Fondo World Series and World Championships, and the winners will be awarded with the coveted UCI rainbow jersey. rom the earliest days of Pokémon, people set out to catch them all, train their Pokémon, and battle their friends to see who was a true master of the game. The series has maintained its popularity to the point where it can be considered one of the few franchises that is popular not only as a video game, but also as an anime and even a movie series. It is the secondbest selling series on Nintendo consoles besides the Mario series. Filling out the PokéDex is always an exercise in fun, but has that fun held up over the years? The series celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2021, which means high hopes (and expectations) for 2022. With Pokémon Legends: Arceus, one can hope that the series maintains a fresh approach for both the newcomer and the seasoned veteran alike.

Like in other games in the series, you catch, train, and battle against other trainers. This game takes place in the Sinnoh region and is a prequel to the 2006 game Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The open-world setting allows for one to hunt for Pokémon wherever you go. You can even use Pokémon as mounts that can travel quickly, swim, climb, and fly. Some Pokémon will be skittish and avoid you, while others will aggressively attack the player. In some areas, you will find “Alpha” versions of Pokémon that are considerably harder to defeat than their non-Alpha counterparts. You can choose one of three starter Pokémon: Rowlet (from Sun and Moon), Cyndaquil (from Gold and Silver), and Oshawott (from Black and White). This is also the first game in the series to feature starters from different regions together, and has 242 Pokémon at release. There are also seven new species and 17 iterations of already-existing Pokémon. The incorporation of time travel as a plot device also brings replayability to the latest game.

Over the years, the Pokémon games have also gotten more and more complicated. Simply applying HM and TM has evolved (pun intended) into system after system that will leave the game as more of a job than an actual game. You don't need to breed Pokémon, get Mega Evolution Z-Moves, or do any Gigantamaxing. Every attack a Pokémon has ever learned is always available. However, the game is a lot more difficult than previous installations, because filling out the PokéDex completely not only requires catching Pokémon, but also battling a certain number of Pokémon, witness them using certain moves, or even just encountering them in specific ways or at certain times are all essential. That means you'll be doing loads and loads of side quests—which isn't always bad for the dedicated completionist, but also very timeconsuming. While Pokémon is its own brand, this installation has been said to draw comparisons to Monster Hunter and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild, both in gameplay and art style. The utilization of gameplay and art style in this manner shows that the franchise is attempting to bring in a new generation of players—perhaps the children of people who played Pokémon when they themselves were kids. One of the big disappointments in Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the lack of multiplayer. Sure, you can trade Pokémon with ease, but I was able to do that even with Red and Blue over 20 years ago. I may be a little bit biased against games without multiplayer fun, but it is a huge selling point for me. I would like to be able to battle against my friends and complete strangers, and Nintendo and Game Freak definitely have the capability of adding multiplayer capabilities to these games. Overall, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a great way to kick off your adventures in the world of Pokémon, but unless you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll be spending lots of time doing seemingly mundane tasks. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing—the developers have made these tasks fun. For the seasoned veteran who knows everything there is about the franchise, it’s still worth a play, even without the alluring charm of multiplayer.

RENOVATE TO INNOVATE

Revamping the office for future success Learnings from the Covid-19 pandemic have led companies to develop new ways of working and engaging their people, redefining the purpose of the office along the way.

M

ore companies are now adopting a hybrid work setup, a move that is making the planning of optimal office ecology more complex, said leading diversified professional services and investment management firm Colliers. “In adopting a hybrid work setup, businesses must reassess and reconfigure their offices not just to accommodate these changes, but at the same time maintain a sense of safety in the workplace and create an ideal work environment that will lead to better performance and employee engagement,” says Patricia Cruz, associate director of office services – tenant representation at Colliers. She notes that hybrid work is here to stay and the one challenge with this type of work setup is the fluidity March 2022

of office needs because the number of employees coming to the office may fluctuate every day. As a semblance of normalcy starts to return in the Philippines and around the world and more employers are already implementing or planning their employees’ return to the office, setting up the workplace in such a way that it integrates collaboration and social interaction with protecting workers’ health and well-being is of utmost importance. “This plus maintaining the workplace flexibility that employees now enjoy,” Cruz remarks. In this regard, Colliers urges companies to evaluate the potential benefits of renovating their offices with the following considerations in mind.

78

Ventilation and air-filtration systems Health experts have emphasized the importance of ventilation in minimizing the risk of transmitting Covid-19. The absence of proper air circulation in an enclosed space allows coronaviruscontaining aerosols to stay suspended in the air longer than they should and reduces the safety of the workplace. This can be remedied by simple solutions such as opening windows and using fans to exhaust room air to the outdoors, or by more sophisticated technologies like portable high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) fan/filtration systems to enhance air cleaning. Office ecology How different teams should be positioned relative to each other and how gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

you plan for them to interact are crucial when planning out your renovation, because your goal is to make the workplace more productive and efficient across different business functions and at the same time allow room for social distancing. Current pain points of your office space This might also be the time to assess the condition of your workstations, fit-out, electrical systems, and plumbing to see what needs work. Talk to your employees — they will be more than willing to provide feedback on how the office can help them work better. Transform every space into a workspace with collaboration areas While important tasks can be accomplished with employees working remotely, many teams struggle with generative work that brings about new ideas. To encourage this, consider huddle or informal meeting areas to inspire collaboration while maximizing the use of your office space.

open spaces where groups can safely socialize or exercise together. Renovation costs Lastly, talk to a project consultant or a fit-out contractor to conduct a test fit-out to determine what needs improvement in your office space and what solutions can be implemented while staying within your budget. Renovating the office is just a small part of a larger shift that companies must be proactive towards — changing work dynamics, cultural norms, and a competitive hiring landscape where the office says a lot about the company. Colliers encourages companies to reassess their current office in terms of space optimization and its adaptability

to changing cultural and operational considerations. How people collaborate and perform work have changed forever and the workplace must now be agile and adaptable to these changing work dynamics. “Companies that adapt to the changes brought upon by unprecedented events will be able to retain their existing talent and even attract the best ones,” says Cruz. “It is our belief that how the workplace is designed and used reflects the behavior and culture of an organization. Companies are encouraged to capitalize on the opportunity to renovate based on insights gained during the pandemic, which will ultimately drive innovation towards success and people engagement.”

Wellness areas “Wellness” will be the buzzword when we all return to the office – and rightfully so. Businesses are encouraged to allocate spaces where employees can conduct activities that are beneficial to their wellbeing, such as quiet “inspiration” rooms where they can take a breather or even

Democratizing Credit Access CIMB Bank PH launches REVI Credit

A

ccess to formal credit remains limited in the Philippines. According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) latest financial inclusion report, around 54% of the adults with outstanding loans in the Philippines obtained such loans through informal sources, like family, friends, or informal lenders. Cost and inconvenience emerge as the primary barriers to access to formal credit, with the BSP having reported that the most cited reasons for individuals’ aversion to borrowing include high interest rates, too many documentary requirements, and the need to put up collateral. Given this, various government instrumentalities and financial institutions have recognized the role innovation plays in improving financial access, particularly to credit. CIMB Bank Philippines, in particular, has already made significant progress on this front through its Personal Loan product. Based on a survey it conducted in December 2021, almost 3 in 4, or 74%, of its Personal Loan customers are first-time bank loan customers. Building on this momentum, the Bank has recently released another credit offering which continues to make formal credit more accessible to Filipinos.

Instant approval, higher credit limits, and lower interest rates REVI Credit, CIMB Bank Philippines’ latest credit and Buy Now Pay Later product, offers a promising alternative to informal lending sources and even traditional formal credit products. It comes with a multitude of features that address a lot of the pain points borrowers normally face when borrowing from the usual sources. “One of the biggest barriers to formal credit is the application itself. Banks would usually ask for a lot of income and supporting documents, which Filipinos working in the informal sectors may not necessarily have. Not to mention, the evaluation process usually takes time,

even weeks, which is not ideal if you need the money to spend now,” shares Vijay Manoharan, CIMB Bank Philippines’ Chief Executive Officer. “With REVI Credit, the application process is entirely digital and takes less than 5 minutes. The process is even easier for preselected users, who will not be required to submit income documents, thanks to CIMB Bank’s alternative credit scoring process.” REVI Credit offers higher credit limits of up to PHP250,000 and interest rates as low as 1%. Customers also do not need to pay any annual fees to maintain their credit line. They will only pay when they use the product.

Enabling flexibility

Driving innovation and financial inclusion

The BSP, in its 2019 Financial Inclusion Report, shared that more than half of the Filipinos who borrowed money did so to meet basic needs and essentials, like food, house, rentals, and utilities. Unlike other credit products, which borrowers have limited use for, REVI Credit offers multiple features. Customers can use it to pay bills and will also soon be able to use it to shop online and purchase online goods with installments through its Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) feature. Most notably, REVI also lets its customers convert a portion of their credit lines into cash or a term loan at any time, giving them more flexibility and making it a good option for emergencies and unforeseen needs.

Since its full launch for all CIMB Bank customers last December 2021, REVI Credit has already issued a total credit limit of over PHP2-billion to its users. It has also recently received two awards from the UK-based Global Banking & Finance Awards under the Excellence in Innovation category. The bank plans on making REVI more accessible by offering it to more than 1 million CIMB customers in the next 2 years. Products like REVI Credit can help in democratizing access to formal credit in the Philippines and show tremendous promise in driving financial inclusion, especially to the underserved.

Ready for Global Hyperscalers

T

elco-neutral data center operator Beeinfotech PH has announced the general availability of its first data center (DC) in the Philippines. Dubbed “The Hive,” it is currently the largest operating telco-neutral data center facility in the country, with three floors capable of housing at least 3,000 server racks of up to 45U rack height. Combined with its network interconnect capabilities, Disaster Recovery Seats, and Security & Network Operations Centers (SOC/NOC), The Hive is ready to answer the colocation needs of hyperscalers expanding global footprint and enterprises undergoing digital transformation. First announced in August 2021, The Hive’s arrival follows the growth of the data center market in the Philippines, which is becoming one of the most preferred nations in the APAC region March 2022

to host data centers. According to a report from Research and Markets, the Philippine data center market will experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.40% between 2021-2026, with investments reaching up to $535M by 2026. Research and Markets also cited Beeinfotech PH as one of the new notable players joining the booming market. Furthermore, the expansion in the country is in line with the APAC region’s considerable growth in data center spending, with the market research firm expecting that the region will spend around $94B by 2027. “With the increased demand for digital services under the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the recent efforts to improve the nation’s connectivity and IT infrastructure, now is the perfect time to welcome hyperscalers and other large-scale partners to the

Philippines. Telco-neutral data centers with significant and flexible rack space such as The Hive are suitable colocation facilities for hyperscalers since they enable enterprises to quickly scale resources and establish a local footprint without the arduous and time-consuming process of building a DC from scratch,” said Beeinfotech PH president & CEO Reynaldo Huergas. As a testament to the facility’s colocation capabilities, The Hive can host advanced solutions such as AWS Outposts, which allows hyperscalers and enterprises to run popular AWS applications locally. The Hive also has other world-class services courtesy of its advanced cybersecurity suite powered by Continent 8. Included among them is BProtect DDoS Mitigation, which can fend off powerful DDoS attacks, and BProtect SIEM, a Security Information and Event Management solution that gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

constantly scans for malicious activity within a client’s infrastructure. Emphasizing partner-driven co-location and sustainability The Hive follows an Open Design concept, enabling it to meet specific colocation requirements of clients, such as special enclosures and cages for racks. Beeinfotech PH also adheres to a Shared Responsibility model in maintaining infrastructure, where maintenance duties can be done by either Beeinfotech PH or a client’s in-house staff. The said model also allows the possibility of the two sharing maintenance duties. Beeinfotech PH’s partner-driven philosophy also extends to The Hive’s telco-neutral connection delivered under BConnect Managed Connectivity. Being telco-neutral, The Hive brings together all telecommunications and internet service providers under

one roof, thus assuring that clients can leverage maximum access to all connectivity options. Beeinfotech PH is likewise keen on partnering with regional and global data center operators who intend to extend their footprint in the region. “Our facility is configurable to the point where other DC operators can structure the facility using their existing designs, similar to a plug-and-play model of service that gives more freedom and customization,” added Huergas. Supporting the company’s sustainability goals while still delivering optimal service to clients, The Hive is designed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification that recognizes its ability to reduce carbon emissions and power consumption. It is located at the Bridgetowne Destination Estate spanning the border of Pasig and Quezon City.

Building More Unicorns F(DEV)’s venture studio model powers local tech start-ups

T

he Philippine start-up ecosystem experienced a booster shot the last couple of years. Not only has there been an increase in the number of tech start-ups led by Filipino founders, but there has also been a big jump in start-up investing activity. Once overlooked, the country is attracting more foreign venture capital (VC) funding as reflected in recent large investments received by a number of Filipino startups. But while the number of players and value of the startup ecosystem have grown, the Philippines still lags behind other start-up ecosystems in the Asia-Pacific region. Empowering underserved markets For many years, large Philippine corporates have been the source of capital and innovation in many industries. In recent times, however, these large enterprises have also been facing new challenges themselves and exploring ways to outrun disruption in their industries. Issues such as demographic shifts, technological advancement, increased global competition, and changes in customer behaviors are pushing companies to keep pace or risk becoming irrelevant in the long run. All of these trends are also being accelerated by more nimble global tech start-ups. The Filinvest Group, which has businesses in a wide array of industries, including banking, real estate, retail and F&B, hospitality, energy, and even agriculture, finds the answer to navigating this conflux of trends and disruptions in F(DEV). Launched during the pandemic, F(DEV) has the ambitious goal of building more unicorns from the Philippines in the next five to seven years, and in the process, adding significant enterprise value to its mothership. After just over a year in existence, F(DEV)’s current portfolio already includes four start-up ventures focusing on solutions to key problems in underserved markets.

89

March 2022

Enterprise

“F(DEV) is a venture building outfit that invests in and incubates new start-up ventures,” says managing director Xavier Marzan. “But more than simply ‘starting-up’ these new ventures, we want to rapidly bring them to a level of operational scale that is required to make a real impact. So we also view ourselves as a ‘scale-up factory’,” adds Marzan, who himself has been involved in the start-up or scale-up of two fintech unicorns in Southeast Asia.

Start-up DNA and venture-building talent Building unicorn-level businesses requires an innovative model that combines a start-up DNA with a venture capital mindset while leveraging the might of a parent company’s ecosystem. People, of course, are critical. F(DEV)’s team itself is made up of seasoned entrepreneurs, product specialists, venture operators, data mavens, designers, and engineers with substantial start-up or scale-up experience, and not just staffed by personnel from the parent company.

While venture building has been popular in the US and Europe the last decade, the model is getting attention only recently in the region. According to Marzan, F(DEV) is not an accelerator that accepts applications from the outside nor a VC fund per se. But we identify and invest in potentially viable large-scale start-up ideas and turn them into companies,” he says. March 2022

“Kick-starting new ventures and growing them 20x or 100x need a different breed of talent. Everyone needs to be fast, agile, creative, innovative, and comfortable with ambiguity. Moreover, people should have an unrelenting focus on

90

gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

achievements in its first year, including being able to finance its first PHP100 million notes to local businesses within only 10 months since its founding,” shares Capulong, who has helped scale operations of VC-funded fintech start-ups. B2B ecommerce start-up Qwote, which made its public reveal at the PH Startup Week in November, is also introducing a new leader. The new country CEO, Bjorn Pardo, brings decades of e-commerce experience to the team, being the founder and CEO of Xend and co-founder of Jinio as well as an Alibaba eFounders Fellow. “I am a strong advocate of developing home-grown tech startups, which is at the heart of what F(DEV) does,” says Pardo. “There are so many underserved opportunities in the Philippines and in the region, so we need to find ways to rapidly serve those unmet needs. By tapping into a large network of users and resources, we are able to accelerate time to market and expose start-up ideas to a broader audience from the get-go.” Moving start-ups to scale-ups To achieve scale fast, F(DEV) underscores autonomy for start-up teams. F(DEV) teams work in an agile environment with constant experimentation and pivots, something large corporate cultures may find difficult to do. This is why while F(DEV) itself is 100 percent owned by FDC, it is governed by a senior-level board to shield it from various corporate structures. Funding also comes from the top. This autonomy for start-ups, however, does not necessarily mean total detachment from the rest of the group. Start-ups need the resources of and support from the various corporate C-suite offices, in particular at the onset when a start-up idea is being vetted. As such, another way F(DEV) helps start-ups is by transforming long-and-winding corporate processes, whether they be in commercial units, technology, HR, legal, or finance, into short and sharp workflows. “Our goal is to eventually scale start-ups to a regional level. Many times, the problems and gaps facing us here in the Philippines are very similar to what other emerging markets are experiencing. “If the companies are spun out of the group, F(DEV) would retain only a minority stake and bring in external VC investment to scale up the companies further,” mentions Marzan.

solving customer problems and prioritizing customer experiences,” states Marzan. The type of team F(DEV) builds and needs for its venturebuilding efforts is reflected in its recent recruits for two of its portfolio companies, Investree Philippines and Qwote. Investree Philippines, the country’s first and only crowdfunding platform with a permanent license granted by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), recently brought in fintech lending and start-up veteran Alex Capulong as its country COO/GM.

F(DEV) recognizes the shifts in perspective, as VCs who have historically been cautious of corporate spin-outs because of their ties to the mothership are now increasingly becoming open to new ideas. F(DEV) believes that with the right formula, VCs would appreciate de-risking the initial customer validation or R&D through a large ecosystem.

“I’m very happy to be part of a group that is clearly focused on scale and impact. We want to support SMEs in the Philippines in a massive way and build on the start-up’s

Microsoft ICT summit gathers government leaders to empower stronger digital organizations across the country

N

ow in its 5th year, Asenso Pilipinas is the largest publicsector cloud summit in the Philippines and brought nearly 3,000 public officials together in its 2022 edition. Carrying the theme, “Navigating change and emerging stronger in a digital era” the event aimed to enable leaders from the Philippine government and the broader public sector to build stronger digital organizations and achieve greater agility and resiliency as the country moves forward, post COVID-19. “At Microsoft, we aim to empower governments around the world towards three key outcomes: Engage and connect with citizens to address increasing expectations and demands for higher levels of service from their government agencies. Modernize the government workplace to provide agencies and employees with the tools they need to do their jobs as efficiently as possible. And enhance government services to find new ways to optimize operations and transform its processes. We know that these three make the heart of digital acceleration, and we are committed to helping the government in all of their technology adoption and transformation journeys,” said Joanna Velez-Rodriguez, public sector director of Microsoft Philippines.

Microsoft’s keynote speakers were followed by plenary sessions on four key focus areas: • Optimizing for the new world of hybrid work • Building a hyper connected government • Accelerating digital capability through AI • Protect everything with end-to-end security

Microsoft Corporation corporate vice-president & deputy general counsel Antony Cook delivered a keynote speech focusing on how organizations can navigate uncertainty in an ever-changing business and economic landscape, in addition to zooming in on Microsoft’s efforts to empower organizations all over the world to achieve their greater digital ambitions. “People, organizations, and societies will need to adapt to change more than ever before to pave the way for true March 2022

economic recovery,” said Cook. “Today, we are helping customers to adapt and respond in real-time. As we see a focus on restarting economies, we will be engaged in helping businesses to rebound. Longer-term, we anticipate the need to reimagine the business world and in many places that is already underway, including how the public sector institutions will operate, manage, engage, and respond to their citizenry. We are committed to working alongside customers in all these spaces to help shape the future and realize new opportunities.”

These sessions were participated in by a collection of leaders from the public and private sectors including Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Undersecretary Rafaelita Aldaba, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Assistant Governor Lilia C. Guillermo, Department of Information and Communications (DICT) Assistant Secretary Evamay C. Dela Rosa, Department of Health (DOH) Dr. Enrique A. Tayag, Department of Education Director Abram Y.C Abanil, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) Engr. Orlando Malaca, and Supreme Court of the Philippines Court Attorney Atty. Jed Sherwin Uy.

Optimizing for the new world of hybrid work

According to Microsoft’s 2021 Work Trend Report, Hybrid Work

94

gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

is here to stay. Microsoft surveyed more than 30,000 people in 31 countries and found that 73 percent of workers want flexible remote work options to continue, while 67 percent are craving more in-person time with their teams. How organizations adapt to this trend and accommodate the expectations of their employees will define the post-pandemic workplace. Crayon and Microsoft provided insights on how organizations and employees can adapt and thrive in hybrid work arrangements with the latest technologies that can be leveraged to optimize the modern workplace. Meanwhile, Assistant Governor Guillermo of BSP shared their strategies for hybrid work and how their system migration to the cloud has helped the central bank function effectively despite the limitations caused by the pandemic. “Even before the pandemic, we already migrated to the cloudbased platform. It will be very hard for us to address the COVID-19 situation if we had not. Because of this, we were able to prepare for our work from home arrangements, and we were able to provide core services to the public and different banks remotely,” said Assistant Governor Guillermo. The BSPs monetary policy adjustments in recent years played a crucial role in addressing the pandemic’s impact on the economy.

Building a hyper-connected government

Governments today are constantly challenged by evolving citizen demands, such as creating new economic opportunities, ensuring health and public safety, and improving the efficiency of government services. This merits greater agility through technology and data to better respond and prepare for emerging challenges. To support and enable hyper-connection, Radenta Technologies presented cutting-edge solutions, like its Government Resource Integrated Planning System (GRIPS), which is specifically designed to empower the public sector to manage and maximize data. Furthermore, Dr. Tayag detailed the steps the DOH is taking to become a hyper-connected organization through recent innovations implemented in their vaccine management strategy. “Power BI, for example, has allowed us to improve data management and data sharing so that decision-making at levels of health care can actually happen. This was possible because of the timely, accurate, and secure dashboards we are using with Power BI. More importantly, the public is given access through this dashboard so that there will be a better understanding of our pandemic situation as it evolves,” said Dr. Tayag.

Accelerating digital capability through AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) will play a key role in helping the Philippines respond to and recover from COVID-19, build resiliency, and increase its competitiveness on the global stage in the years to come. According to research by Kearney, the adoption of AI can increase the Philippines’ gross domestic product (GDP) by 12 percent by 2030, or equivalent to approximately $92 billion. The challenge today is making the power of AI accessible and enabling its responsible and effective use for individuals and organizations. The DTI is spearheading the national government’s AI ambitions with the launch of the national artificial intelligence

(AI) roadmap in 2021. Usec. Aldaba stressed how AI can be an enabler in the country’s economic recovery. “The Philippine AI roadmap focuses on using AI to uplift the lives of our people, industries, and the economy. The roadmap goes beyond our present difficulties as we envision the Philippines as an AI center of excellence in the future,” she said.” AI represents a big window of opportunity for the Philippines to leverage our existing comparative advantage, especially in the IT-BPM sector, and expand to key international AI markets in the future.” The education sector also plays a crucial role in the country’s economic development, as it equips the workforce of tomorrow with the necessary skills and competence for a more digital economy. Director Abanil said that the DepEd is accelerating its adoption of innovations to optimize teaching and learning with the deployment of DepEd Commons and the Learning Management System (LMS). DepEd Commons is a central repository system of open educational resources and learning materials accessible to students and teachers alike. While the LMS is a portal that enables teachers to efficiently and conveniently structure students’ academic activities. Director Abanil added that the DepEd would integrate predictive analytics into the LMS, which will allow them on a national scale to track students’ performance and accordingly make the necessary interventions to help improve learners’ competencies.

Protect everything with end-to-end security

According to Microsoft’s digital defense report, cybercrime has evolved as a national security threat driven mainly by financial gain, with the government as the most targeted sector by cybercriminals at 48 percent. Moreover, based on Microsoft’s Global threat activity analysis, currently, 1,397,007 devices in the Philippines encountered cyber threats such as malware and viruses. Microsoft is working closely with the public and private sectors across the world to enable stronger cyber security measures and policies. In the Philippines, the Supreme Court is implementing end-to-end security in its processes as part of its digital transformation efforts. “Cybersecurity and privacy will always play crucial roles in any digital transformation initiative, and they must be carefully balanced with user experience and productivity,” said Supreme Court of the Philippines Court Attorney Atty. Jed Sherwin Uy. “Aside from encrypting data, identity and access management is the key. We are currently able to achieve this through Azure AD (Active Directory). It allows us to secure access with single signon, verify identities with mobile factor authentication, control access with smart policies and enforce this privilege for just-intime access.” In response to cyber threats globally, Microsoft will investUSD20 billion over the next five years to accelerate efforts to integrate cyber security by designing and delivering advanced security solutions. This includes USD150 million in technical services to help federal, state, and local governments upgrade security protection and help ensure they deploy the best and most up-todate security tools available. For this annual ICT summit, Microsoft partnered with Crayon, Radenta Technologies, NTT Data Philippines, and KPMG International Limited.

MERALCO MSERV BAGS PLDT EE CONTRACT When an industry leader like PLDT has a need for specialized energy services company (ESCO) services, it searches and contracts providers with kindred credentials to guarantee that professional work is delivered. Meralco’s wholly-owned MServ, one of the country’s largest electromechanical contractors, was tapped by PLDT for the ESCO’s ability to conduct Energy Efficiency (EE) audits on a nationwide scale, recognizing its expertise on energy efficiency, a hot button issue given its provenance to greenhouse gas, climate change, and pollution. “Meralco has been focusing on issues of sustainability as part of our corporate mandate. MServ’s initiatives aim to help companies comply with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (or RA 11285),” said MServ CEO and president Ronnie L Aperocho. MServ has played a role in nationbuilding and re-building amidst all iterations of political and economic crises. It now offers an expanded suite of ESCO solutions to address the current trend on EE utilization. “Practicing EE is particularly important right now because the telecommunications, internet, and digital services are crucial in today’s world: remote work arrangements are now the norm, and also because e-commerce is becoming more mainstream,” said Aperocho. Facing intense workloads, PLDT engaged MServ to ensure that its facilities are up to par by transitioning to eco-friendly solutions while promoting operational efficiency and healthier working conditions for employees. MServ began its EE audit by establishing the baseline consumption for 139 PLDT sites. Having granular baseline data paints a clearer picture of a client’s

consumption profile, which then helps MServ identify possible opportunities for efficiencies and savings. The ePLDT Data Centers, an enabler of digital business solutions and the largest data center footprint in the country — thus, making it a critical player in Philippine digitalization — also underwent an Electric Reliability Audit. MServ’s scope of work included testing services, power systems analysis, and power quality analysis for load side and supply side systems. Findings here will lead to reduced downtime and fluctuations, more dependable system reliability, and ostensibly better customer services for e-PLDT clients. Regarding health and safety provisions for the pandemic, MServ designed, supplied, and installed MERV 13 and UVC Sanitizers in PLDT offices. These added layers of COVID-19 protection in a bid to create safer working environments and promote employees’ peace of mind and well-being, which is expected to translate to higher productivity. Finally, MServ continued with its annual Electrical Preventive Maintenance; an ongoing engagement with the telco since 2015. As an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, this yearly exercise of checks, cleanings, and minor repairs (when necessary) was done at 74 PLDT and Smart offices to maintain the performance of

103

electrical equipment and avoid costly outages. Through its energy efficiency audits, MServ upgrades a partner’s operational efficiency and helps incur savings. These engagements also come with a knowledge transfer of sustainable best practices and systems that create a positive ripple effect on services rendered to customers and stakeholders. MServ’s approach to scalable and tailored solutions plays to varied businesses with varied requirements on how to save on energy costs through EE. The ESCO can assist and enable businesses to achieve sustainability and energy efficiency goals from services such as an energy efficiency audit, identification of savings opportunities and operational efficiencies, proposals on energy-efficient products, and electrical facility preventive maintenance aimed at improving equipment performance, among others. Furthermore, MServ’s offerings are not confined within the Meralco franchise area but are deployable nationwide. “MServ is the only ESCO that is backed by the largest private-sector electric distribution utility company in the country. And with Meralco’s experience and track record in the energy industry, our clients can be assured that MServ’s services are also of the highest quality,” Aperocho concluded. March 2022

recognizes print media’s ‘HeADliners’ for 2021

Barbie Atienza, UPMG president

Jay Sarmiento, UPMG vice-president

Badette Cunanan, UPMG chief of staff

F

or centuries, print media has been a source of credible news and information. Even as new challenges emerged, such as the advent of digitalization and the COVID-19 pandemic, the medium persists through the trust and goodwill it has generated through eons of public service. “Print media in its traditional form has already been challenged by digitalization even before the COVID-19 crisis,” Jay R. Sarmiento, vice president of the United Print Media Group (UPMG), said at the organization’s first general membership meeting of 2022. “But print media is resilient. We did not allow ourselves to run out of ink, mainly valuable and that is credibility. Against the wide sea of fake news, the trust on a reputable source of information becomes all the more important. We are able to maintain our integrity in delivering fair, professional, balance, and accurate information. No doubt, the power of print in providing high quality and credible March 2022

information is what sustains us,” Ms. Sarmiento, who is also the sales and marketing director of PhilSTAR Media Group, said. In recognition of the media agencies and advertisers who maintained their faith in the print industry and supported it through challenging times, UPMG held its 2021 HeADliners Awards. The awards honored the industry’s biggest supporters: the media agencies and advertisers both in the public and private sector that have kept print alive through perhaps the most challenging time of print’s centuries-long history.

110

The winners for the “HeADliners” of 2021 are as follows: • Media Agencies are Starcom, Mediavest, Touch XDA, New Directions, and IPG MediaBrands. • Advertisers - Public Sector are Go Negosyo, Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, Pag-IBIG Fund, and Lungsod ng Makati. • Advertisers - Private Sector are Toyota Motors, SM Supermarket, Ortigas Land, PLDT Smart, and Isuzu. gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

Champions of truth, fairness, and accuracy In receiving the award, Tricia CamarilloQuiambao, IPG Mediabrands Philippines CEO, said that her organization will continue to support the print medium as it sees the values it brings to the Filipino public.

Kalin Franco-Garcia, vice- president at Pag-IBIG Fund, shared her history of how she built a relationship with the UPMG’s print media and publication companies.

“On a personal note, my roots are in journalism, which has a lot to do with print, so I am a believer in its vanguard qualities: trust, credibility, integrity, authority, discipline, truth. These will have a very important place in the future of our industry,” she said.

“You might ask, why was the marching orders from our CEO then to build a relationship with print media? Why print? The answer is that print is powerful. It has plenty of uses and the power lies in its credibility. When you print something in black and white, it is perceived by the public as the unassailable, incontrovertible truth,” she said.

Thermina Ann Akram, executive director at GO Negosyo, said, “Through the years, print media has been our channel to promote the advocacy of entrepreneurship. And we have utilized print media to provide inspiration to Filipinos through true stories of success, and now the value of vaccination so we can move forward from this pandemic.”

Mila Gonzales, supervision administration officer at Lungsod ng Makati, said, “In this digital age, print media remains highly relevant and reliable as the communication tool. The city always puts a premium on accuracy, fairness, and transparency in public information. Hence, its continuing investment in print advertising.”

Meanwhile, Elmer Harold Grande, chief of the communications management division at CITEM, said that the print medium helps their organization with its advocacy to promote Filipino entrepreneurs.

Elvin Luciano, assistant VP of marketing services at Toyota Motors Philippines, said that print media has been instrumental in the company’s performance in the Philippines. ”Toyota has been an industry leader in the Philippines for two decades now and that feat would not be possible without the help of our friends from print media, and without the power of the print media, which you have been graciously sharing with us through the years. Especially now in our challenging times when industries and businesses from all over the world are transforming and evolving,” he said.

“We at CITEM firmly believe that the media serves as our partner and ally, not only in sharing at what we do at CITEM, but more importantly in amplifying our message that the Philippines is a major player and a top-of-mind sourcing destination for top quality products in the home, fashion, lifestyle, and food sectors as well as creative talents and services. With this award, we look forward to a longstanding partnership with our friends from the media, and a rekindled spirit to continue championing the ingenuity, artistry, and excellence of Filipino enterprises,” he said.

“As Toyota embarks on our transformation journey, we are also excited to see how the print media will evolve and transform in the coming years, and we will be joining you in that transformation,” he added.

111

Echoing the sentiment, Robert Carlos, assistant division head for sales at Isuzu, said, “As we diversify our marketing efforts to different channels, we continue to support print media and value the amount of exposure it provides for us to be able to reach our target market.” Barbie Atienza, UPMG president, said that through a united front, UPMG, together with its partners, can overcome the challenges it is facing and play its part in keeping print media as an established and trusted source of news and information. “We know for a fact that even before the pandemic itself, we have been facing challenges – both in our business and operations – with different factors involved, with the emergence of new media, with the different outlooks as far as advertising and marketing are concerned. But we remain steady. As they say, when the going gets tough, the tough get going,” Mr. Atienza said. “That’s what we wanted to do with the association and with the industry. We try to keep ourselves afloat by keeping ourselves together, with strengthened unity, by getting everybody together, getting our acts together,” he added. Mr. Atienza further noted that UPMG plans to continue offering learning opportunities for its members and partners so that they could navigate current and future issues better, and establish a Print Congress to pursue its perpetual mission of sustaining the credible nature of the print industry. “If you want your messages to come across as truthful, credible, and reliable, then you know what channel to go to. As they say, if it’s in print, it must be true. In the midst of fake news and misinformation, this is certainly most important,” Mr. Atienza said. March 2022

Electroencephalogram Words by Jose Alvarez

T

here are diagnostic tests for a good number of medical conditions out there, but one that I have a close personal relationship with is the electroencephalogram (EEG). I was diagnosed with epilepsy at 12 years old and underwent multiple EEGs to find out the cause of my seizures. It is a method to record voltage fluctuations resulting from the ionic current within the neurons of the brain, placing electrodes on one’s scalp using special gel to measure brain activity. But how did such a complex procedure become such a staple of neurology? Before we talk about the history of the EEG, an EEG usually lasts between 20 to 30 minutes plus preparation time. It detects electrical activity in the brain and determines changes in brain activity that can help diagnose brain disorders such as epilepsy or other seizure disorders. It can also be useful in detecting brain tumors, brain damage from head injuries, inflammation, stroke, or sleep disorders. Richard Caton, a British physician, is generally considered to be the father of the EEG. Writing for the British Medical Journal in 1875, he noted that the exposed cerebral hemispheres of rabbits and monkeys had electrical phenomena. This was the first indication that the

March 2022

brain had an electrical nature. In 1890, Polish physiologist Adolf Beck noted that rabbits and dogs had spontaneous electrical activity in the brains of dogs and rabbits with rhythmic oscillations that were altered by light, which may be the earliest indication that brain activity was altered by certain stimuli (and thus, the first evidence of photosensitive seizures). Beck also took the step of placing electrodes directly on the surface of the brain to test for sensory stimulation, which was also the earliest evidence of brain waves. The first animal EEG was done in Ukraine in 1912, by physiologist Vladimir Vladimirovich Pravdich-Neminsky. The first EEG recordings of seizures were done two years later in 1914 by Napoleon Cybulski (more widely known as the discoverer of adrenaline), although the seizures were experimentally induced and not natural. Up to the 1920s, most EEGs were performed on animals. By 1924, German physiologist and psychiatrist Hans Berger recorded the first human EEG. He also gave the current name of electroencephalogram to the procedure, which was described “as one of the most surprising, remarkable, and momentous developments in the history of clinical neurology.” Ironically, Berger

112

did not have a great understanding of mechanics or electricity, and it would be another decade until the EEG would gain prominence on the international stage. In 1934, Edgar Douglas Adrian and B.H.C. Matthews confirmed and developed Berger’s discoveries further. The focal signature of epilepsy, the interictal spike, was found in 1936. This helped develop the EEG even further. By 1947, the American EEG Society was founded as a way to promote this new and growing technology. By 1953, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep was described and greatly helped the EEG. By 1988, the EEG was used to control a robot. While a very complex subject to discuss, the EEG has become a breakthrough in the treatment of brain conditions, head injuries, and more. In fact, it has crossed over to be used in psychiatry. Many diagnostic tests of conditions such as ADHD, depression, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease could use an EEG in the future to determine diagnoses of these conditions, although as of 2019 it still remains in the experimental stage. The EEG’s beginnings have led us to understand how our brains work and how we can understand its function in the future.
