Live Aucion

Begins at 8:00pm L01

Kellie Talbot Motel Oil on canvas  (12" x 24") Value: $500

“Jobs that produced tangible products of iron and steel are being pushed out, traded in grasp for the New. What remains is a language of artifacts in the American landscape formed by signs and industry that communicate through word, design, typography, color and the state of repair. It is this language that conveys society’s economic, political, social and moral aims.” Talbot is represented by Bherd Studios, WA.

L02

Eduardo Fernandez Invisible Morandi Oil on linen  (16" x 20") Value: $950

“The starting point for this painting was my appreciation for modern master Giorgio Morandi. My approach was to paint entirely from life, using common objects in natural light as a starting point to explore these ideas. For me, a Morandi painting inspires the simple joys of visual contemplation and evokes a timeless quality and sense of serenity. I hope that my painting captures some of these qualities.” Fernandez is represented by Nisus Gallery, OR.

L03

Jim Phalen Two Trout Charcoal on paper on panel  (20" x 16") Value: $1,000

“I’m interested in perception. I choose my subject based as much on their potential content as on their visual characteristics. I try and elevate common subjects by engaging with them through careful observation and rendering. I often think that the subject is secondary to the act of painting when seeing the works of great artists.” Phalen is represented by Dolby Chadwich Gallery, CA, Cumberland Gallery, TN, and Linda Hodges Gallery, WA.

L04

Terry Furchgott Black Boy at the Beach Pastel over watercolor on Arches 140lb cold press paper  (22" x 19") Value: $2,500

“During one major period of my career I painted almost exclusively people of color, primarily African Americans. I sought out models with sculptural quality of their features and an infinite variety of skin colors. The setting is the beach at Madison Park in Seattle, and the intense light combined with the busy summertime scene resulted in a work full of dramatic tonal contrasts and rich color.”

[3

Live Aucion L05

Lois Silver The Big White Cat Oil bar  (11" x 14")

Value: $1,950 “I draw with the oil stick, then rub the paint around with my fingers and then finish up the details with my right index fingernail. I hear the people in the pictures conversing with each other. Their moods affect the way each painting is executed. Yes, the big white cat represents something. No, I’m not going to tell. It’s up to you.” Silver is represented by Lisa Harris Gallery.

L06

Michael Magrath Christina Bronze  (4" x 12") Value: $2,800

4]

“Christina is the first in what has become a larger Respite Series. I was seeking something restful and real in response to the often idealized, heroic figures current in much commercial bronze. I am seeking the person within the archetype.” Magrath is represented by Blue Horse Gallery, WA.

L07

Kurt Solmssen New Year Sunset Oil on canvas  (20" x 26") Value: $3,600

“I usually paint outdoors and I try to emphasize the design, color and light of the landscape, often with compositions bordering on abstraction. The pictorial qualities of Fairfield Porter and Edward Hopper are strong influences in my work which records landscape views near my home and my daily life with my family.” Solmssen is represented by George Billis Gallery, NY, and Adler & Co. Gallery, CA.

L08

Susan Bari Price Mezzo Oil on linen canvas  (12" x 20") Value: $800

“An abstract mark is often better at conveying a thought or feeling because it does not represent a physical object. People often see abstraction as the rival of representational art. It is actually its foundation and its structure. My own work is firmly centered in representation, yet my connection to abstract design is fundamental.” Price is represented by Atlanta Art Gallery, GA.

Live Aucion L09

Andrew Hare Chubby and Tubby Oil on canvas  (24" x 60") Value: $2,400

“I had long admired the Chubby & Tubby on Aurora Avenue for its quirky construction, arched roof and ample storefront. After recently driving by the yet again repainted building, I was inspired to dig out my old photos and recapture with brush and canvas and imagination the fun and uniquely Seattle flavor of this one-of-a-kind store.”

L10

Kimberly Trowbridge Oh My! Oil on canvas  (36" x 42") Value: $2,100

“This painting reflects an oblique vision of the self: the journey of one’s ‘cargo’ or ‘goods,’ in the form of a still life, toward the greater, unknown self. The objects are metaphors for what is left after stripping-down our assets to the bare essentials needed for our life-quest.”

L11

Michael Grimaldi Figure Study (Male Nude with Arms Crossed) Graphite on paper  (17" x 14") Value: $2,500

“I was trained within the classical tradition but I am interested in capturing light, form and space directly, in a way that speaks to our modern condition.”

L12

Joseph Lesser Vermeer’s Room Oil on canvas  (24" x 22") Value: $1,200

“Something intrigues me about the rooms that great artists painted. In this painting, I was in no way trying to emulate Vermeer’s painting craft; rather I was painting in my own familiar way, sensing the light and composition, the color balance.

[5

Live Aucion L13

Rebecca Allan Pond Near Lake Washington Acrylic on canvas  (18" x 24") Value: $1,800

“This painting was begun onsite, at one of the watery inlets connecting Lake Washington to the Arboretum, and was finished in the studio. The July day had begun with rain, and, by noon, these marvelous Tiepolo clouds had filled the sky.” Allan is represented by 2/20 Gallery, NY.

L14

Tony Ryder Model with Harrow Graphite on paper  (20" x 16") Value: $2,500

6]

“The model is leaning against a heavy, wrought iron harrow, an agricultural implement designed to be pulled behind a tractor or an ox in a field after it has been plowed, so as to break up large chunks of earth. We leaned the harrow against the wall, with the spikes pointing away from the model, in a pose that reminded us of the martyrdom of saints.” Donated by Annie Rosen. Ryder is represented by Jenkins Johnson Gallery, NY; Andreeva Portrait Commissions and Gallery, NM.

L15

Juliette Aristides Light & Light Bulb Oil on panel  (5 ½" x 7 ½" & 7 ½" x 5 ½") Value: $3,600

“Joseph Conrad wrote that the aim of art is to snatch a moment from the remorseless rush of time and to reveal that rescued fragment to others. These light bulbs, examined as sources of light and possibly truth, are easily discarded artifacts of our modern age.” Aristides is represented by John Pence Gallery, CA, and Skotia Gallery, NM.

L16

Geoffrey Laurence Ishmael (from Moby Dick) Oil on paper, mounted on board  (18" x 12") Value: $12,000

“I wanted to make a piece about narrator Ishmael who learns that Captain Ahab seeks one specific whale, Moby Dick, a ferocious, enigmatic white sperm whale. Artists have also to carry what may be a deadly obsession, which their family and friends also have to witness, so there is some resonance in the story for me.” Laurence is represented by 101/exhibit gallery, FL.

Live Aucion L17

Chihuly Boathouse: Private Lunch & Tour for Six Value: Priceless!

The Boathouse sits on scenic Lake Union in Seattle, Washington, and is home to the hotshop of world-renowned artist, Dale Chihuly. The facility features magnificent collections of Northwest baskets and American Indian trade blankets. Guests will also have the opportunity to view Chihuly’s unique lap pool, and observe a beautiful saltwater aquarium. Visitors may also watch the Chihuly team of glass blowers create artwork in the Studio environment. After the tour a catered lunch will be provided in the scenic Evelyn Room overlooking Lake Union. This opportunity has been made possible through the generosity of Chihuly Studio. This offer is valid until March 4, 2012, and may not be transferred. The tour must be arranged at least ninety (90) days in advance at a mutually agreed upon time. Tours, which last about 1 hour, can be scheduled between 10:00am and noon or 1:00pm and 2:30pm, Monday – Friday.

L18

Craig Kosak Umber Oil on canvas  (26" x 40") Value: $4,600

“Umber is the final painting in a series of equestrian portraits inspired by the work of Hopi artist Charles Loloma. Loloma’s work included jewelry inlaid with colorful semiprecious stones and provided a model for the unique treatment in the horse’s mane.” Kosak is represented by Giacobbe-Fritz Fine Art, NM.

L19

Norman Lundin Study for Prairie Fire Oil on canvas  (10" x 14") Value: $4,500

“Just as one cannot have something ‘long’ without having something ‘short’ for comparison, one cannot have an ‘object’ without a ‘void.’ It is the void that interests me. The objects are not there to be described; they are there to explain the space. I don’t limit myself all the time, though, and, once in a while, I do use loaded subject matter.” Lundin is represented by Francine Seders Gallery, WA; Koplin Del Rio, CA.

L20

Martha Mayer Erlebacher Seated Nude with Golden Cloth Oil on canvas  (20" x 20") Value: $8,000

“I have been a figurative artist for over four decades. I create narrative figurative paintings to critique contemporary culture using metaphor and social commentary. This solo figure was painted from life in my studio in Pennsylvania.” Erlebacher is represented by Seraphin Gallery, PA; Sullivan-Goss Gallery, CA; and Rosenthal Fine Art, IL.

[7

Live Aucion L21

Lyle Silver King Street Station Oil bar  (16" x 20") Value: $1,900

“I’m attracted to the old parts of the city — the old ornate red bricks that have withstood the elements for all these years and the overhead trolley wires that clutter and abstract the sky. I like the early morning or late afternoon light that provides the dramatic contrasts and shadows.” Silver is represented by Patricia Rovzar Gallery, WA.

L22

Keri Stack Peppers Oil on canvas  (10" x 8") Value: $650

8]

“Although many of the objects in my paintings are timeless or herald from an earlier time, my approach is to paint them in a contemporary, simple way. The paintings begin with an everyday object that, simply put, needs to take center stage. Other times, it’s a matter of selecting a cast whose members don’t always get along.”

L23

Ted Kutscher

Brittany (West to Pointe du Raz — Baie de Trepasses) Oil on board  (16" x 14") Value: $1,500

“There are times in your travels when you find a location so paintable that you can’t believe your good fortune. Happening upon this view of the end of the continent in Brittany (Finisterre) was about as good as it gets. An Elysian two hours! With the late afternoon air and light coming off the Atlantic, I almost felt that I was channeling the greats who painted here: Gauguin, Matisse, Whistler, Monet!” Kutscher is represented by Silverwood Gallery, WA.

Live Aucion L25

Tamara Stephas Cloud Study with Electricity Oil on canvas  (16" x 12") Value: $500

“My paintings explore the relationship between humans and our environment.”

L26

David Dwyer Breakfast Scene Oil on linen canvas  (9" x 15") Value: $1,200

“There’s a tremendous visual overload in our contemporary life — I’d like my paintings to offer a respite from this. I work with a limited palette of pigments as I find that this approach helps to create an overall unity in the finished work.” [9

L27

Gary Faigin Village with a Plan Oil on canvas  (32" x 40") Value: $4,500

“After years of painting landscapes plein air, in my Imaginary Landscapes series, I’m re-exploring urban and rural landscape imagery, both hovering over towns and fields with farmhouses in space and looking at them straight on. The combination owes something to the abstract.” Faigin is represented by Linda Hodges Gallery, WA.

L28

Susan Bennerstrom Lacken Strand Oil on linen  (20" x 16") Value: $2,800

“Lacken Strand is a beach in County Mayo on the West Coast of Ireland. I made this painting following a residency at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ballycastle, North County Mayo Ireland.” Bennerstrom is represented by Davidson Galleries, WA, and Terrence Rogers Fine Art, CA.

Live Aucion L29

Patti Warashina Female Pouring Ewer Low fire clay, underglaze, glaze  (10" x 10" x 6") Value: $2,000

“I often use the figure in voyeuristic situations in which irony, humor and absurdities portray erratic behavior, as a way of finding relief from society’s pressure and frustrations on mankind. It is my way of escaping the doubts and disharmony of human nature and its routine, and role-playing scenarios to my liking.” Warashina is represented by Loveed Fine Arts Associates, NY.

L30

Peter Van Dyck Seattle from Steve’s House Oil on board  (16" x 20") Value: $2,500

10]

“If your real window looks over the parking lot or the neighbor’s roof, your painted window can survey the rural roads where your grandparents grew up or a wilderness untouched by time. A landscape has become a green time machine, a poster-sized park.” Van Dyck is represented by John Pence Gallery, CA, and Grenning Gallery, NY.

L31

Michael Stasinos Burger Row Oil on panel  (12" x 12") Value: $1,200

“This view struck me as an iconic American image of Everytown, USA, although it was done in Wenatchee one rough spring day.” Stasinos is represented by Woodside-Braseth Gallery, WA.

L32

Mark Kang-O’Higgins unTitled Charcoal on paper  (23" x 18") Value: $1,400

“My work is firmly rooted in the figurative tradition. I am interested in the human condition in both the physical and emotional sense. I made this drawing at Gage as part of a series of expressive portrait drawings.” Custom framing donated by Annie’s Art and Frame.

Live Aucion L33

Julie Stonebraker Fresh Apples Oil on canvas  (11" x 14") Value: $500

“I’ve infused my extensive experience of watercolor with the use of oil paint while incorporating the valuable principles of still life painting gained in the atelier.” Stonebraker is represented by Fountainhead Gallery, WA.

L34

Melinda Hannigan The Global Harmony Oil and glass beads on panel  (30" x 30") Value: $2,400

“The inspiration for my paintings comes from the working side of the maritime world, a world I have known all my life: tankers, container ships, barges, rusty old bulk carriers. I manipulate color, composition, perspective and texture, and as a result my paintings include realistic images that become abstract canvases.” Hannigan is represented by Fetherston Gallery, Waterworks Gallery and SAM Gallery, WA.

L35

Tom Hoffmann South Head Watercolor on paper  (25" x 37") Value: $1,200

“If the basic formal relationships are true, the viewer will be able to meet me halfway and fill in the details. I know that I prefer to look at paintings that offer me the opportunity to be involved in interpreting the subject.” Hoffmann is represented by Fountainhead Gallery, WA. Courtesy of the Estate of Sue Manzo. All proceeds from this piece go directly to the Gage Scholarship Fund.

L36

Meg Holgate Lily Pads VIII Oil on canvas  (36" x 18") Value: $3,400

“My landscapes are simple meditations on nature, either evolving from, or dissolving into, nothingness. These places of beauty and tranquility are so ingrained in our being that they require only a subtle visual suggestion to bring about euphoric recall.” Holgate is represented by Pacini Lubel Gallery, WA.

“I usually wake up just before I have to dash out to work, so my on-the-go meal is coffee and fruit in my studio. Although it feels like a bit of a rush, I have always loved how my tangerine sits on my palette!”

“In my view overlooking Portage Bay in Seattle, the colors of the sky, water, trees and roofs are in constant flux, changing with the seasons, weather and time of day, but they always seem harmonious in their envelope of light and air.”

“My aspiration is to convey something of the vitality, spirit and essence of the subject; a relationship that develops its depth on site. This is one of three paintings of Azalea Way from 2010, an area to which I’ve returned each May since the early 1990s.”

“My goal is to discover and perceive as much as I can into the myriad of ways nature connects together, and weave as much of that understanding as I can into my work.”

“The color, light and composition are the formal painting qualities I am intrigued with.”

“Materials have a life of their own. Each have very particular physical presence and social use, but the quirks of their processes can reveal another wholly unexpected behavior.”

“The objects depicted are typically found in an academic painting which so aptly illustrates the painter’s creed: ‘Ars longa, vita brevis’ or ‘art is long, life is short.’”

“The gesture of the model’s arms and hands, extending both outward and curling inward, is a familiar expression in portrait painting: the outstretched hand contains an open invitation while the other points inward from the heart’s center.”

“For this painting, I set out early to join the morning joggers and dog walkers, hoping to capture the fleeting colors of a sunrise.”

“When I paint, I remember what Michelangelo said, ‘Beauty is in the small things and beauty is no small thing’ (translated from my native Russian).”

“At this time, I am experimenting with manipulating space through paint application and color, exploring different kinds of brush strokes.”

“In rural areas poles display layered generations. I abstract away the surroundings by sloshing, pouring and spattering to create an unreal space. These paintings contrast abstract, random flow with realistic representation.”

“My primary concerns are capturing light and form, and exploring the endless possibilities of composition.”

“I am interested in the subtle variation that can be achieved when using red and black ballpoint pens. I was influenced by the techniques practiced in trois crayon (three-color chalk) drawings of the old masters.”

“I like to dispense with the unnecessary to let form and color dominate my organic abstractions.” Courtesy of the Estate of Sue Manzo.
