Margaret Davidson is both an artist and illustrator, who teaches courses in Beginning Drawing, Sources of Modernism in Drawing, Aesthetics of Drawing, and various drawing technique classes at Gage. Davidson earned her BFA from the University of Michigan and holds an MFA from the University of Washington. She is the author of Contemporary Drawing: Key Concepts and Techniques, and is represented by Anchor Art Space in Anacortes, WA. Margaret is celebrating her 20th year as a Gage Teaching Artist.

Lucy Johnson just completed 9th grade at Lakeside School. “What I love about TAS is that nobody will judge you for taking art seriously, but, at the same time, there’s no pressure to be super-committed to what you’re doing or overly concerned about your art measuring up to some standard. What is more, no matter your level of skill, the visiting artists take your desire to improve seriously, which is really inspiring.”

Find fall classes and workshops offered by Davidson on pages 11, 16-18.

rawing is where we all begin in art — we all start there, and some of us stay there forever. When studying art, drawing is where we learn to understand all the basics of form, light and shadow, perspective, composition, even color. Some take this information into painting or sculpture, and some continue on with drawing, working towards that perfect line that best describes a figure’s contour, or that deeply layered collection of marks that starts to soften the space or darken the shadows.

Today drawing is its own singular art form, with its own means and ends. “Drawing has come into its Every kind of image is currently being created in drawing. Some contempoown, with contemporary rary drawing artists are devoted to drawing artists and working on paper with classic drawviewers alike aware of how ing materials and are celebrating the the abstract, formal issues beauty found in that tradition. Others, like Geoff Flack, are working on paper are up front in drawing, with newer materials, and still others fundamental to every are leaving paper behind and drawdecision, and every move.” ing directly onto other surfaces. Some, like Agnes Martin, make drawings that — Margaret Davidson seem to hang in mid-air, and others, like Contemporary Drawing, Key Concepts Gego, make drawings that actually do and Techniques (Watson-Guptill, 2011) hang there. Drawing has amazing flexibility, can be flat or dimensional, can move or stay still, and is always involved with both what the image is, and how the surface and mark work together to make the image happen. When we start drawing, we are on the road to everywhere in art. We can travel at any speed we like towards painting and use drawing as the foundation, or even use drawing technique as the method of paint application. We can travel towards sculpture and really explore form and space in both clay and on paper. Or we can travel towards drawing itself as our chosen destination. Drawing provides the integrity for it all, whether it lies underneath as a foundation, or is the visible end itself. Through drawing we find ourselves gaining a real understanding of art and of our own individual connection to it all. Drawing is where we all begin, and will take us all wherever we want to go.

student artwork Celebrated at Best of Gage On Friday night, June 15, Gage opened its doors to the community in celebration of art and artistry at the 20th Annual Best of Gage Exhibit, Awards & Sale. More than 800 visitors packed the Gage building on Capitol Hill to tour three floors of outstanding student work from the 2011-2012 school year. In addition to the show, the annual celebration featured a standing-room-only redcarpet awards ceremony. Guest Juror Cable Griffith, Exhibitions Curator at Cornish College of the Arts, identified standout work in seven categories as well as Best in Show. Winners received a prize package from an event sponsor, as well as the coveted “Pammy,” an Oscar-style statuette that’s become a popular annual tradition at the Best of Gage. Curator/Public Events Manager shelly leavens showcased the more than 150 entries throughout the eclectic hallways and gallery spaces at Gage. “I like to think about the show in the larger sense of how it represents the tenets of the school and the wide array of classes we offer,” said Leavens, “and that each piece also

represents that individual’s experience of learning.” Aristides Atelier student Charles Prutting captured Best in Show for his compelling figure portrait, Nihil est Virtute Amabilius (Nothing is Sweeter than Virtue), and Danielle Hendrix captured the People’s Choice Award for her stunning cast drawing, Blitzkrieg. A full list of winners is to the right, and a gallery of award-winning work from the show is posted on the Gage Facebook page at Facebook.Com/GageAcademyofArt. Executive Director Pamela Belyea and Artistic Director Gary Faigin hosted the awards ceremony, and joined the packed house in marveling at the student creativity. “I love the opportunity to celebrate a year of art-making at Gage,” said Belyea. “It’s always so exciting to see the breadth and caliber of the work, and to have the opportunity to recognize the very best at Best of Gage!” Special thanks to all the 2012 Best of Gage sponsors, including title sponsors Laird Norton Tyee, 4Culture, and the Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs.

aleah Chapin Captures Prestigious BP Portrait award techniques that eventually helped propel her toward the completion of her MFA, which she achieved this last spring through the New York Academy of Art.

Congratulations to former Gage student aleah Chapin, winner of the 2012 BP Portrait Award. Aleah’s captivating portrait, “Auntie,” took home top honors from among more than 2,100 entries from around the world. Born in Seattle but now based in New York, Aleah created “Auntie” as part of a series of portraits of unrelated women she’s known all her life. “The fact that she (Auntie) has known me since birth is extremely important,” says Aleah. “In her I see the personification of strength through an unguarded and accepting presence.” Aleah won £25,000 (about $38,000 USD) for top prize, as well as a commission to create a piece for the National Portrait Gallery permanent collection.

A recipient of several awards including the Posey Foundation Scholarship, and most recently the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant; Aleah’s work has been included in solo and group shows throughout the United States and Europe. Aleah was also the recipient of the Judith Kindler and Kyle Johnson Scholarship for Innovation in the Arts, awarded each year through the generosity of Seattle-based artist Judith Kindler.

“I am thrilled that we were able to help (Aleah) with her education, and that she is doing so well with her art,” said “Winning the BP Portrait Award is an Kindler. “As an artist, I know how imporhonor, and I must admit, quite surreal,” auntie, 2011, oil on canvas, 58" x 38" tant it is to be supported along the way says Aleah. “(Auntie) is part of a current financially, and in the family and community.” series that examines my personal history through the people who have shaped it. The process of painting these women The BP Portrait Award, now in its 33rd year at the National allowed me a glimpse of that journey and brought me into the Portrait Gallery in London, is an annual competition aimed at present moment of our shared history.” encouraging artists to focus upon and develop portraiture in At Gage, Aleah studied with Rita Natarova, Michael Grimaldi, their work. Zoey Frank Honored in international Competition Congratulations to Zoey Frank, Grand Prize Winner of the 2012 Artist’s Magazine All Media Art Competition. Her oil-on-canvas painting, “Song” — named Best in Show at the 2011 Best of Gage — was chosen from among hundreds of works submitted from around the world. A resident of Boulder, CO, Zoey is a graduate of the Aristides Atelier, where she completed four years of training in drawing and painting. “Song” is a self-portrait, inspired by a dream, of which she says, “as I worked, this painting became more about the feeling of being at the edge of the world, and meeting that groundlessness with integrity — about staying in my body when I want to escape.” She is currently hard at work on two large paintings that, in her words, “feel” related to “Song.” “I am interested in stripping all the Song, 2011, oil on canvas non-essentials from an image so that we can see the essence more clearly,” she says of her new work. “I’m working to remove the figures from everyday settings, placing them in imagined environments that feel intrinsic to the characters.” Zoey plans to participate in the Hudson River Fellowship this summer, studying the artistic, social and spiritual values of the Hudson River School painters, and is pursuing her MFA at Laguna College of Art and Design in California.

Zoey currently shows with the Fountianhead Gallery in Seattle and Haynes Galleries in Nashville, TN and Thomaston, ME. To learn more about Zoey, and view selections from her portfolio visit ZoeyFrank.com. Register online at GageAcademy.org beginning Monday, August 6, 2012.

Sept 27 Crafting the Artist Statement

Kelda Martensen, artist

An artist’s statement is a crucial aspect of being a working artist. Martensen demystifies what is so often a hurdle for artists — describing their work — and regards the artist statement as that which is made more accessible, less intimidating and more of a joy to read.

Elizabeth K. Mauro, owner, Art Installation

Mauro shares her professional expertise on how to pack artwork for shipping and/or local transport; she also speaks to preparing artwork for installation in a gallery or other public space, including tips on framing and hanging hardware, what information the gallery will need ahead of time in order to install the artwork, and more. In the past 20 years, Mauro has installed more than 630 art exhibitions for institutions, galleries, and private collectors including Bellevue Arts Museum, Frye Art Museum and the Museum of Glass.

Opening Reception: Friday, September 21, 6:00pm-8:00pm

Portland based artist Amber Stene presents a new body of works on paper. Stene uses graphite, ink and washes of watercolor to develop layered surfaces that explore the concept of social acceptance within different cultural scenarios.

It was a productive summer! Selected paintings, drawings and works on paper showcase students’ use of techniques taught by local and national instructors from Gage summer programs and workshops.

Inadvertent Desolation October 12 – November 9

12 x 12 in ’12: Small Works Student Show October 12 – November 9

In this collaborative and highly sensory installation, Hannah Viano examines definitions of home, and how we and the space we inhabit change as time marches on. Metal sculptor Margie McDonald lays the groundwork for this installation, building an organic nest-like structure that leaves room for light, imagination and movement to filter through. Streams of birds take flight on their own journeys, swooping up the viewer in a whirlwind of motion that escapes the walls of the gallery. Other artists include Amy Ross, Emma Morehouse, Sarah Jones, Emily Eagle, and Jess Thomson, all bringing their own distinct layers of sound, movement, ephemera and flavor to the space.

Opening Reception: Friday, October 12, 6:00pm-8:00pm Drawings by Jen Erickson use repetition to demonstrate a building, evolving process of mark making — reflective of her interests in science, technology and the deterioration of memory.

Jethaniel Peterka: New Work November 16 – January 6 Opening Reception: Friday, November 16, 6:00pm-8:00pm Painter, sculptor and tattoo artist Jethaniel Peterka exhibits new works reminiscent of 19th Century cabinets of curiosity. He brings traditional subjects of natural history and portraiture into the present by injecting his exquisite oil paintings with a dose of dark narrative.

Opening Reception: Friday, October 12, 6:00pm-8:00pm Diminutive in size, yet significant in execution and content, current students show small works across various media, including exquisite studies for larger works, still-life, sculpture and collage — each under one square foot in any dimension.

Opening Reception: Friday, October 12, 6:00pm-8:00pm

This annual alumni exhibition features artists who have learned foundational skills at Gage and are seeing the fruits of their labors — working as emerging artists developing their own creative concepts and techniques outside the classroom.

Taking a virtual road trip around our geographically diverse state, Make Space explores the tiny to small towns of Washington where artists are living and creating within bucolic settings in vibrant art communities. Artists include Jessica Bonin and James Riesen of Edison (population 133!), Justin Gibbens and Renee Adams of Thorp, Ellen Picken of Republic and David Eisenhour of Port Hadlock. These artists exhibit works across various media that push beyond the boundaries of their small towns, yet reflect connections to the raw materials and wildlife of the surrounding landscape and the rural communities of which they are an integral part. This exhibition is presented in conjunction with Justin Gibbens’s lecture, Systema Naturæ. See page 8.

Life Stories November 16 – January 6 Opening Reception: Friday, November 16, 6:00pm-8:00pm Melissa Weinman uses a new series of paintings in the format of diptychs and triptychs to invite uncommon associations between common things, asking the viewer to solve a visual puzzle with the title as a clue. An homage to family, memory and story, and at once linear and exploratory, Weinman unravels traditional still life and landscape compositions through poetic associations of objects and place-based narratives, providing a story that must first be unlocked to be told.

Gratis @ Gage (continued) Gratis @ Gage: Artist Lectures

Artist Lectures Each quarter, Gage contributes to Seattle’s arts discourse with lively Friday night artist lectures, presented in conjunction with the art openings listed on page 7. The public is invited to attend these lectures free of charge.

The Very Best Nest Hannah Viano Friday, September 21  7:00pm  Geo Studio, 3rd Floor  free In the spirit of the collaborative format of Straight Back Home to You, attendees experience a dance performance by Amy Ross and Emma Morehouse. Viano and collaborators discuss the conceptual underpinnings of the show and how we, the audience, work to create our own ideas of home amidst deep traditions and conventions. “Standing on the front step of my childhood home in Maine on a spring day I would be in the middle of a tornado of flight as swallows darted and swooped back and forth to their work in the eaves. I loved being in the middle of that energy, the frenzy of making a nest and then caring for the new lives inside, all with an urgency and purpose as sharp as beaks and forked wingtips. I want to take that moving energy and bring it with me as I explore our own creation of nests and homes, and the sometimes more subtle and subconscious drive to have something to come back to at journey’s end. While the swallows and I crossed that same threshold a million times, each of us changed a little with each trip, as does the home we build around us.” Hannah Viano is a Seattle based artist, working primarily with cut paper and using it as a jumpingoff point for projects and collaborations large and small. Viano is a recent Artist Trust EDGE program participant and recipient of a City Artist grant to create a Pacific Northwest flora and fauna alphabet for young children. Margie McDonald, detail

Systema Naturæ Justin Gibbens Friday, October 12  7:00pm  Geo Studio, 3rd Floor  free Imitating 18th- and 19th-Century zoological illustration and traditional Chinese fine-line painting, exhibiting artist Justin Gibbens’ embellished birds and beasts speak to ideas of evolution, vulnerability, and mutation. Gibbens discusses this work in relationship to the small artist community of Thorp, which he calls home. One of the founding members of the contemporary artist-run PUNCH Gallery in Seattle, Gibbens also talks about the formation of PUNCH, the ideas propelling the gallery, and the important role it serves for artists who are living and working outside of Seattle.

Justin Gibbens received his BA in painting and drawing from Central Washington University and a Scientific Illustration Certificate from University of Washington. He attended the Jentel Artist Residency earlier this year and his work is represented by G. Gibson Gallery in Seattle and Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland. Gibbens was the recipient of a 2006 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award and a 2008 Artist Trust Fellowship Award.

Working Artist: Mother of Two Melissa Weinman Friday, November 16  7:00pm  Geo Studio, 3rd Floor  free Still life, landscape, figure and the narrative of a growing family. Exhibiting artist and Gage instructor Melissa Weinman talks about her return to a full time studio practice after taking time to raise her two children and how this change to her life has affected her work. She will also discuss artists and ideas that influence her figurative narrative paintings and how she defines her artistic vision through incorporating all three genres into her studio practice. Weinman is a graduate of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, where she earned her MFA. She has had solo exhibitions at the Frye Art Museum (Seattle), Arnot Art Museum (Elmira), Tatistcheff Gallery (NYC) and Tortue Gallery (Santa Monica). There is an unmistakable feeling of spontaneity in the best watercolors that arises from the fluidity and transparency of the medium. One wonders how paint that is allowed to have its own way can end up describing the subject so well. It seems as if it must come from either divine inspiration or very good luck.

In this concentrated oil-painting workshop, based on traditional 15th- and 16th-century techniques, you explore the painting process into three logical steps — developing an accurate drawing, refining a monochromatic underpainting and completing the work in full color. You learn to see and paint fundamental relationships, refining your priorities when developing your work. As you study historical paintings for interpreting the figure and learn to use them to your advantage as a modern painter, you sharpen your painting process and uncover your own artistic metaphors.

It may be hard to imagine the role of a thoughtful approach in such a seemingly fortuitous process, but, in fact, it is focused awareness that provides the confidence it takes to give the paint room to assert its best qualities. Asking the right questions can allow you to give as much control as possible back to the paint. The workshop will follow the inquiry-based approach described in Tom Hoffmann’s newly published book, providing you with practice finding your way to confident brushwork. Wa1301

In the tradition of all professional art schools, Gage offers drop-in figure studios every day of the week. Artists work independently from the model on a drop-in basis, gaining hands-on practice in drawing, painting or sculpting the figure. In Artist’s Choice sessions, the pose is set by a Gage instructor who works alongside studio artists for the duration of the pose.

In the Reserved Figure Studios, a group of dedicated artists work from one figure pose throughout the 10-week quarter, with the pose set on the first night. Artists must register before the quarter begins to guarantee an easel space.

Connect with a Gage mentor for guidance on your creative journey. Depending on your skill level, mentors give private art lessons or assess your work, make suggestions for further study and help develop a road map for your future study. To enroll, call Gage to help you determine the best match for your mentoring needs.

Utrecht is now hosting open studio sessions at their Capitol hill store on Sunday nights.

The first three pieces are painted on paper, and the fourth piece is produced on actual calf skin vellum with 24-karat gold leaf gilding for embellishment. D1263  All Levels  $430

Beginning with measurement techniques, observational skills and the unique requirements of botanical art, learn to use line to accurately portray plant subjects, then move on to understanding light’s effect on form and how to use shading for three-dimensionality. While focusing on plants, the skills you acquire apply to any realistic drawing effort and are an excellent preparation for learning botanical watercolor as well. Intermediate students are welcome and can take on more advanced plant subjects. D1266  All Levels  $430

This series is designed for the student who wishes to become adept in figure sculpture, and for any who wish to fully understand the form in three dimensions. Sculpt both from life and casts at various scales, working in a variety of media and acquiring the skills needed to realize accomplished figurative sculpture. Topics include modeling in the round and in relief, 3D anatomy, armatures, mold-making, casting, and carving. In addition to class time, you may add up to two more independent studio days for a serious immersion. An ongoing practice in longpose figure drawing is a component of the program, and the completion of a Foundation Figure Drawing class or equivalent is recommended. This course is the first in a series of three classes focused on Foundation Figure Sculpting and will continue in the winter and spring quarters.

Begin with exercises and develop an expertise in the portrait construction of individual features and expression in both people and animals, then move to working from the model in the final weeks. Learn how sketching can ease the interpretation and translation of your thoughts as you sculpt.

Learn to accurately represent human gesture, proportion, mass, structure, and surface form in three dimensions. A building block of the Foundation Drawing Program at Gage, this course offers sculpting students a comprehensive introduction to figure sculpture, while students of drawing and painting improve their dimensional depiction of the human form in space. Work from the same pose for the entire quarter, allowing you 10 sessions to develop your work. s1217 s1223

Learn the anatomy of the face and neck as you rely primarily on observation to bring about a believable animated portrait bust. The last two weeks are focused on cutting the clay off the armature, hollowing it out, and rejoining it. Your work will be fired in the Gage kiln. s1218

aDult ProGraMs: ateliers @ Gage

unning from mid-September through mid-June each year, Gage Ateliers offer an intensive studio program for the serious artist-in-training. The ateliers (French for artist’s studio) are based on the traditional teaching model of the 19th-century European academies where dedicated art students apprenticed with a master artist. At Gage, all atelier students are given an individual studio space to complete projects independently under the guidance of their chosen instructor. Working together in group studios, atelier students enjoy the benefit of creative influence and dialogue among their peers within a focused environment. Enrollment in the atelier programs is yearly, with nine months of dedicated instruction. For the 2012-2013 school year, the ateliers run September 10, 2012 through June 14, 2013. Aristides and Kang-O’Higgins students make a 30-hour-per-week studio commitment, including working half of every day from the figure model. Students of Faigin work independently for a minimum of 15 hours in the studio each week, in addition to attending two weekly teaching sessions. Atelier students receive a 10% discount on all concurrent classes and workshops (including Aristides in Florence: Drawing Workshop & Art History Tour, see page 5), as well as free access to all Drop-In Figure Studios and any Lecture Series (see page 15). to learn more or to receive application materials, please email Carol@Gageacademy.org or call 206.343.4243 x15 or 800.880.3898.

Atelier students exhibit their work at the 2012 Best of Gage.

Based on the 19th-century model for training painters, this four-year diploma program provides time-tested methods for solving pictorial problems. Aristides teaches in stages; serious beginning students focus on drawing; more advanced students move into monochromatic and then fully chromatic painting. Fourth-year students work on individual projects with guest mentors. Work from casts, the model and master copies in a series of progressively complex projects. Intended for long-term students, the Aristides Atelier offers you the necessary vocabulary to create well-designed and well-executed drawings and paintings.

Intended for long-term students, the KangO’Higgins Atelier offers the opportunity to work on increasingly complex independent projects under the close guidance of your instructor. You work with line and tone, light and shadow, color theory and mixing, proportion and anatomy, as well as different approaches to life drawing and painting. Learn to convey the essential nature of your subjects through finding the balance between technical accuracy and expressive gesture. Short slide and technical demonstration lectures help you add to your skills and place your work into a wider historical and contemporary dialogue.

The Faigin Atelier offers painting students the opportunity to focus their studio practice on the study of still-life arrangements over the course of one to several years. The intimate studio setting enables you to devote as much time as you wish to creating paintings, without the limitations of model time or weather conditions. Because everyone shares the same focus, optimal conditions for creative interchange and dialogue develop. You work toward success using the still life as a tool for the development of your own artistic voice, creating original, lively pictures that express your ideas and feelings, and focus on technique, rendering and composition.

Lucy Johnson, 15, created this selfportrait during April’s Teen Art Studio session, “The Incredible Line: Self Portraits.” Young artists in this class enjoyed the camaraderie of making art together under the guidance of professional teaching artist Julie Alpert. Drawings like this one represent the exploration of the expressive possibility of varying lines from thick and heavy to thin and light as applied to the self-portrait in charcoal and Conte crayon. For more information about the TAS free drop-in program in both Capitol Hill and Rainier Valley, see pages 28-29, or visit GageAcademy.org/.youth.
