WEEKS 3 & 4 July 16 – 27

DRAWING INTENSIVE Ryan Finnerty & Jethaniel Peterka

PAINTING INTENSIVE Ryan Finnerty & Jethaniel Peterka

Take your drawing skills to the next level in this seriously focused drawing intensive. Over the course of two weeks, you study with creative, professional instructors who guide you through demonstrations and discussions on drawing techniques, draftsmanship and observation. Learn the basics of charcoal and graphite while figuring out how to approach still life and the figure through sight, line, shape and shadow. As part of your academic exploration, you also take a field trip to one of Seattle’s high-profile galleries or museums.

This is the perfect follow-up to the Drawing Intensive! In this highly focused painting program, you learn the fundamental skills of painting. In addition to the materials and techniques of oil painting, you learn to work with painting’s key elements: light, space and color; dealing with sighting, color mixing and paint handling through a variety of approaches to observational painting. Coursework features lots of hard work, instructor demonstrations and one-on-one learning. As part of your academic exploration, you also take a field trip to one of Seattle’s high-profile galleries or museums.

Jethaniel Peterka focuses on the figure, using live models, photographs and the works of the old masters and contemporary figurative artists alike. You learn traditional drawing skills such as gesture, blocking-in, modeling with light and shadow, anatomy, composition and more. Ryan Finnerty focuses on the expressive aspect of drawing, while you learn about value, color, scale and analytical observation. You learn to work with new materials and to draw quickly and confidently. This is a great step if you are hoping to build a portfolio, prepare for the five-week Portfolio Intensive program or is even a great refresher course if you have already taken the Portfolio Intensive. TWO WEEKS!

Jethaniel Peterka introduces you to the traditional “indirect” painting process, carefully layering opaque paint and transparent glazes in stages. You learn the entire process of making an oil painting from preparing your surface, transferring your drawing, under painting, form painting, glazing and finally to varnishing your masterpiece. Ryan Finnerty instructs you on painting’s more expressive aspects by teaching you the skills behind “alla prima,” or direct “wet on wet,” painting from observation. You learn to work with close attention to brush strokes, tone and color. Using a wide range of inspirational subject matter, you continue to hone your drawing skills and quick gestures while learning how to mix paint for tone, hue, shade and tint. This is a great step if you are hoping to build a portfolio, prepare for the five-week Portfolio Intensive program or is even a great refresher course if you have already taken the Portfolio Intensive. We strongly recommend that you have taken the Drawing Intensive or other drawing classes before enrolling in the Painting Intensive. T1213

CLASSICAL STUDIO Tenaya Sims

CONTEMPORARY STUDIO Kimberly Trowbridge

STUDIO WEEK

Develop a strong foundation in the classical tradition of 19th-century artists. Tenaya Sims teaches you to understand, develop and implement the skills needed for representational drawing. Work from the figure in the mornings and from plaster casts in your own work space in the afternoons. The first week begins with a short lecture and slide presentation by Sims, demonstrating his body of work, inspiration and artistic background. Then you focus on the foundation skills of blocking-in the figure and rendering form. The second week you learn the process of working on hand-toned paper while applying the principles learned in the first week. Sims’s direct teaching style is rigorous and engaging. You need to be serious about wanting to develop representational drawing and painting skills to benefit from this session.

Move from drawing into painting by learning to see and mix color relationships from observation under the guidance of Kimberly Trowbridge. Trowbridge begins with a short presentation, demonstrating her body of work, inspiration and artistic background. Using a direct painting method, you focus on understanding color as value, temperature and saturation. You work from the model in the mornings, painting the relationship of the figure to the surrounding space. You devote your afternoons to working from individual still-life installations, focusing on color, composition, space, narrative and identity. Using representation and abstraction as a way to explore individual themes, you create one large, final painting. Prepare to apply your technical skills in an individual direction as you create your own unique artworks.

In the culminating week of the Portfolio Intensive, you devote your time to finishing your projects and holding individual critiques with Sims and Trowbridge. After the critiques, your instructors host two visiting artists and take you on a field trip to explore and examine a contemporary exhibition in one of Seattle’s own unique arts institutions.

Tenaya Sims earned a BFA in painting and drawing from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, and also completed four years of full-time study in the Aristides Atelier at Gage. Sims has received numerous awards and currently runs the Georgetown Atelier as its primary instructor.

Kimberly Trowbridge earned her MFA in painting from the University of Washington and her BFA in painting from Indiana University. She teaches adult classes at Gage and has taught at Western Washington University and the University of Washington.

student removed from Gage programs due to behavioral problems. There is no smoking allowed in the building or on the property. Additionally, Gage is an alcohol and drug-free place for kids and teens. Staff will ask students who break these rules to leave the program for the remainder of the week.

Lunch/snacks All students should bring a sack lunch, beverages and two snacks for the day. Your child or teen will be supervised during lunch and will be encouraged to go outdoors, weather permitting. There is also a vending machine with healthy snacks for purchase.

Sign-in & sign-out Guardians should promptly drop off and pick up students. Unless you wish your 6to 11-year old to attend Creative Care (see below), please do not drop off more than 15 minutes before workshops begin at 9:30am. For Kids: Guardians must sign their child in & out of the program every day. PLEASE NOTE: If you drop off your child before 9:15am or pick up after 3:45pm, Gage will bill you for Creative Care services. Fees are based on usage. Gage is not responsible for children dropped off at Gage outside of actual program hours. Teens: Teens sign themselves in & out of the program on a daily basis. Due to a compressed schedule, teens may not leave the property during program breaks (i.e. for lunch) without a note from a guardian.

Creative care Gage offers Creative Care before and after our summer Kids Workshops. You will be billed at the end of each workshop. Parents who drop off before 8:00am or pick up after 5:00pm will be charged an additional $1 per minute. See page 8 for more details. PLEASE NOTE: There is no Creative Care (supervised care) on Friday afternoons or for our Teen Workshops.
