COVER ARTIST: VONN SUMNER Gage Teaching Artist “I do not set out to illustrate some predetermined verbal idea, nor do I intend any one specific literal or didactic message with my paintings. Instead, I trust and follow my instincts and compulsions to work with certain poses, shapes and relationships and to explore the emotional and psychological territory that unfolds. I find some fulfillment and meaning through the process of making something out of nothing; I am interested in the potential of art to create one’s own mythologies.” Find fall classes and workshops offered by Vonn Sumner on pages 16–19. Cover: Neo-Byzantine, 2013, 20" x 18", oil on canvas
BACK COVER ARTIST: ANGELIQUE HALL Gage Teen Artist, age 15 Angelique Hall is a 9th grader at Arbor Montessori School. “I love Teen Art Studios because I get to try new styles and techniques under a variety of teachers. It’s also a great opportunity to practice my art somewhere other than at home! As an added bonus, Gage is also a great place to make friends you have something in common with, outside of school and other activities.” Read more about Youth Programs at Gage on pages 24–27.

hy study painting and drawing? Why do these ancient forms still matter? We live in a time where we see more images than ever, but this only increases the value of visual literacy and deepens our hunger for meaningful pictures. Far from rote memorization, studying drawing and painting highlights the important distinction between “training” and “education” — the former limits our potential, the latter expands our horizons. At its best, this discipline “Especially in the wake is a constant exercise in critical thinking and of the “de-skilling” creative problem solving, in which the student is not given a set of answers but instead movement in Postwar presented with the tools for a lifetime of asking art schools, and as our questions. We are all practice of drawing born with these incredible eyes, but until we is more important take seriously the idea of drawing we probably than ever.” have not yet learned how to see. To draw is to engage with the world in an active sense, to be — Vonn Sumner more alive, to reassert our human presence into the physical plane. In addition to the relevance of drawing by hand, the moment that students touch their charcoal to paper they enter into dialogue with 40,000 years of human activity: the almost mystical hope that we can transform dust on a surface into something living and real. What a crazy thing to try to do — and what a privilege to try!

2013 BEST OF GAGE
Out Like a Lion The 2013 Best of Gage welcomed one of the largest crowds ever seen in the 21-year history of the event, as more than 900 enthusiastic art lovers packed the Gage building on Capitol Hill to view artwork created by Gage students in the 2012-13 academic year. Outgoing Gage Executive Director Pamela Belyea opened the evening with a special surprise award, recognizing the courage it takes to pursue the artist’s life. The Pamela Belyea Award for Courage went to Aristides Atelier student Ulan Moore, recognizing his drive and determination, as well as his dedication to his craft. “After 23 years of leading Gage, I have come to respect the courage of the many artists who train and work in this institution; artists who face down their own creative fears and their own artistic uncertainty every
day” said Belyea. “Since courage describes a brew of perseverance, honesty and passion, I have become acutely aware of the courage required by artists to forge ahead.” Guest Juror Beth Sellars, co-founder and curator of Seattle’s Suyama Space, selected first-, second- and third-place honors in seven categories, as well as the annual Best in Show; and new in 2013, a Best Drawing award. Said Sellars, “As a curator, I appreciate the opportunity to view new work, whether it is student or long-time professional work. Congratulations to the students and to Gage Academy of Art for the fine body of work exhibited here.”

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7 | 9am-9pm
The annual Drawing Jam® returns to Gage Academy of Art! Make plans now to bring the whole family to the 14th annual community celebration of art, music and creativity, happening Saturday, December 7 from 9am to 9pm at Gage. Spend an hour — or the entire day — but don’t miss one of the most unique art events in the Northwest! Stay tuned to GageAcademy.org/drawingjam — and we’ll see you there!
Invited to Santa Fe in 1991 to be the school’s first guest workshop instructor, Martha was a hard-core artist from the Old School who cared passionately about her art, the training of artists and about the world of art. Martha was a loving friend, a generous donor and a thoughtful member of the Gage Board of Advisors. “I try to make art, which reaffirms to the viewer that there is a value in human life. It should give the sense that one is not alone, and that one is part of a group with similar needs, longings, hopes, dreams, fears and desires which transcend time.” — Martha Mayer Erlebacher

Artists’ Reception: Friday, September 20, 6:00pm-8:00pm Since 2009 Peter Malarkey has been painting the Elwha Valley on the Olympic Peninsula. Removal of two dams on the Elwha River has offered a chance to document large scale habitat restoration, the structures and our developing relationship with our environment. Peter is continuing the series now that the dams are removed and 15 million cubic yards of retained sediment finds its way downstream, affecting the valley floor and river levels, and forming a new estuary at the river mouth.
Students exhibit artwork created during summer 2013 workshops at Gage. These concentrated workshops present in-depth training and practice, providing a framework for developing artistic skills, creative insights and imaginative impulses. Collected works include plein-air paintings from Port Townsend and Skagit Valley, drawings and mixed-media pieces, and work created under the tutelage of visiting instructors from one-, two-, five-, and ten-day workshops.
Gage is proud to present still life works by Katherine Ace, David Kroll, Norman Lundin, Jim Phalen and Sherrie Wolf. Playing with and subverting realism, re-contextualizing objects in nature, utilizing landscape as backdrop and hinging upon historical references, the still-life paintings in Necessary Objects make a definitive statement to the relevance of the genre to contemporary art.

Inspired by The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard, artists Gala Bent and Serrah Russell have collaborated to explore ideas of the body, the domestic and the natural through collage, photography, drawing and text. A limited edition collection of their collaboration will be on view and available for purchase the night of the opening.
The study of the figure is central to the philosophy of art education at Gage, as shown through Atelier work in the figure studio, well-attended public open studios and the sheer number of figure and portraiture courses taught each quarter. In Hunched Bodies, Flushed Cheeks current Gage students show off their intensive study of the human form and its complex modes of expression, presenting realistic portraits, gestural figurative studies and everything in between.

In this bright hour, barely built, a sift of light,
Shagdarjavin Chimeddorj (b. 1954) was raised in Mongolia within a culture of nomadic horsemen. He depicts the body language of horses through sensitive and varied use of spare strokes of ink and modernist applications of oil paint. Deep blue color plays an important role in his work, partly expressing the depth of space felt on the Mongolian steppe. Internationally collected, the majority of the body of his works shown at Gage are on loan from the Hughes and Potter family collections.

The Art of Mongolia Bolor Smith Friday, October 18 7:00pm Geo Studio, 3rd floor In Conjunction with Chimeddorj: Mongolian Modernism
Bolor Smith discusses the culture and rich artistic traditions in her native Mongolia, providing context for the paintings and poetry of exhibiting artist Shagdarjavin Chimeddorj. Chimeddorj’s style of “Mongolian Modernism,” is said to be shaped under the nomadic perception of nature, and dates back to the time of strict censorship during the Soviet socialist regime (1921-1991). Also a poet, the Mongolian writing seen in some of his paintings was prohibited during the Soviet era and is now being revived thanks in part to his work. In 2006, Chimeddorj received the Mongolian State Honored Prize from the President of Mongolia in recognition of his contribution to Mongolian art.

Jeffrey Simmons, an ArtTalk follow-up
Five years ago, painter Jeffrey Simmons was our ArtTalk guest. At the time, Stranger art critic Jen Graves wrote of his elegantly-crafted abstractions: “They’re groovy and trippy, like op art . . . with shapes that look like galactic objects.” His shimmering recent watercolors, on the other hand, evoke crystal structures, wings in flight and force fields; the imagery is clearly linked to the previous series, but is very different in significant ways. How does an artist evolve while remaining faithful to their core inspiration? How does one thing lead to another?
A Visionary in His Own Words: The Art and Letters of Morris Graves Vicki Halper
It is always enlightening to hear an articulate artist discuss their own work. Legendary Northwest painter Morris Graves is no longer with us, but his words live on, thanks to a recent collection of Graves’s letters compiled and edited by independent curator Vicki Halper. Halper, who knew the artist personally, will read selected letters from the book, Morris Graves: Selected Letters, while we look at and discuss the images being described. In the more literary days before email, Graves was particularly eloquent in his use of the written word, and they offer a brilliant window into his mystical works.
Throughout academic year 2013-2014, Gage presents monthly screenings of Art in the Twenty-First Century, a special biennial series on contemporary art and artists that has aired on PBS since 2001. These hour-long films feature such artists as Rackstraw Downes, Laurie Anderson, Sarah Sze, Kiki Smith and Cindy Sherman. ILLUSTRATIVE DRAWING Steven Reddy Sat-Sun 9:30am-4:30pm 10/5-10/6 [2 days]
The rigors of city life demand constant adaptation. As visual artists, you devise your own ways to interpret the complex urban environment. Spend a weekend translating your personal vision into the washes and strokes that are the vocabulary of watercolor. Set up your easel on wharfs and in alleyways, painting Seattle’s diverse neighborhoods from life.
In this two-day workshop, students work big and boldly to create large-scale layered mixed-media drawings through observation and imagination. Explore different techniques of expressive drawings, working from models, still lifes and photography as you layer multiple elements into one drawing. Step outside your comfort zone, stretch the limit of what a drawing can be, and enjoy the freedom to make a mess and have some fun.
Through discussions, demonstrations and exploratory exercises, Steven introduces you to his own technique for developing engaging, detailed observational drawings with intention and confidence. An understanding of general principals of perspective is helpful, but guidelines and vanishing points, while foregone in favor of loose capture, still invoking the artist’s subjective viewpoint and sensibility. Discussions, demos and critiques guide your studio time as you work from the still life and in the field. Through careful observation and the application of new drawing, shading and coloring techniques, you progress from pen and ink contours, fully-toned India ink–wash grisailles to polished, lively watercolor renderings. $25 partial materials fee payable to instructor.

CRASH COURSE IN COMPOSITION Anne Lewis Saturday 9:30am-4:30pm 9/21 [1 day] Artists are constantly making decisions: both the conscious and unconscious minds play roles in these decisions. Believing that experience nourishes intuition, this crash course is a “lab” designed to exercise and build compositional skills. To this end, the immediacy of collage lends itself well to fast, fun and informative projects emphasizing structure, unity, rhythm, shape, positive and negative space and more. You may work in any medium of your choice.

UNDERSTANDING COMPOSITION THROUGH SHAPE & NOTAN Mitch Albala Sat-Sun 9:30am-4:30pm 10/5-10/6 [2 days] A composition is only as strong as the integrity of its underlying design. Notan (Japanese for “dark-light harmony”) is a type of study that uses the balance between darks and lights to reveal the essential energies of a composition. Working from masterworks, photographs and still lifes in painting, drawing and collage, you learn to identify the dark-light composition and, most importantly, to “think in notan” — to make better choices in the formative stages of your work so as to bring greater order and power to your compositions. This class does not promote an Asian style, but rather, a universal principle applicable to all types of painting and drawing. WW1333 ALL $195

VENETIAN PAINTING TECHNIQUES OF THE OLD MASTERS Hamid Zavareei Sat-Sun 9:30am-4:30pm 11/16-11/17 [2 days] Italians adapted the Flemish painting technique that originated in the Northern European Renaissance by substituting the egg tempera underpainting with oil paint and using canvas as opposed to wood panels, which allowed for larger paintings and compositions. This significant advance in painting technique is responsible for the burgeoning of oil painting on a scale that was unprecedented, and has continued to be the foundation of academic learning throughout Europe. Follow this tradition as you create master copies and learn to lay the initial paint layer called Imprematura, and develop the underpainting, working with the layers of scumbles and glazes to the final touches and highlights. WW1337 INTERMEDIATE $195
Explore and develop an autobiographical artifact that records our past and present experiences through paint, found objects, collage and sculptural elements. Starting with the practice of an accurate but direct brush drawing on the canvas and the bold block-in of relative tonal values and colors, experiment with a variety of limited palettes, brushwork and techniques including use of the fan brush and palette knife. Working from dramatically costumed models in theatrical settings you learn to truly paint “at the first go,” making swift color and compositional choices, simplifying complex subjects and creating several strong and spontaneous images full of light and drama. $15 partial materials fee payable to the instructor. FIGURE DRAWING ON TONED PAPER Juliette Aristides Mon-Wed 9:30am-4:30pm 12/16-12/18 [3 days] Explore the atmospheric use of tone in this three-day figure-drawing immersion. Create two kinds of work: a reductive drawing where you apply the charcoal first and remove the tone to reveal a strong value pattern. Next, draw on toned paper with white, where the charcoal or pencil is built up gradually to create form. Strong management of values in a composition is responsible for much of the power and visual impact of a work of art. Using the figure model as your subject, explore different aspects of tone such as composition, shape, edges and contrast. The workshop is augmented by ongoing demonstrations, discussions and lectures related to figure drawing on toned paper and how it can be applied to other subject matter. WW1341 ALL $325

Mon-Sat 9:30am-4:30pm 1/6-1/11 [6 days] As a foundation for your own contemporary works, explore the indirect painting techniques of the Venice and Florence schools of the 15th and 16th centuries. Working from the model, each day you progress through set stages of this rigorous painting technique in order to complete one finished portrait by workshop’s end. Progressing from compositional studies, develop a careful underdrawing and fill in your portrait with a monochromatic grisaille painting to establish tonal gradations, then overpaint your portrait with a classic dead palette of red oxide, yellow ochre and cold black plus white before applying a warm/ cool palette that pushes the value contrasts and gives your portrait a beautiful tonal depth. The final stage of your painting process includes working with a full-color palette while applying glazes and scumbles, as required. This is an advanced course suitable for anyone with an interest in classical painting techniques and intermediate painting skills. WA1401 INT/ADV $675
Mon-Fri 9:30am-4:30pm 1/6-1/10 [5 days] Working from the live model, learn a number of conceptual and practical tools by which to better solve the observational and practical problems associated with naturalistically depicting the human face and head. While seeking to grasp the character of the sitter, develop drawings from the block-in stage through to the modeling and completion of forms. Recognizing stages in the drawing’s development serve as the discussion point of various topics including gesture, proportion and likeness, the anatomy of light and shadow, structural and physiological anatomy and value, line and mass.

Making art about art has a long and venerable tradition in our culture. How is this tradition being transformed today in a world awash with images drawn from all cultures and times, the omnipresence of popular culture, kitsch and a growing fascination with “bad art?” This illustrated lecture explores the ways some artists are combining traditional tropes and appropriated images with contemporary themes, sometimes as reverential homages, but often with ironic twists that transform the originals into vehicles for contemporary parody or satire.

UNDERSTANDING COLOR P FOR PAINTERS Charles Emerson Thursday 9:30am-12:30pm 9/19-11/21 Color is color only according to amount, placement and application — a concept based on Josef Albers’s Yale color course and translated into acrylic from cut papers. To effectively learn to see what is happening in a work of art, develop your sensitivity to color beyond color charts and wheels, general color theories and many commonly held ideas. In daily studio exercises and critiques you explore color interaction using acrylics, space problems and most importantly, color density. The last two sessions include figure painting. Homework and further study problems are given and strongly encouraged. P13107 INTERMEDIATE $430

Ateliers
R
ADULT PROGRAMS: Ateliers
unning from mid-September through mid-June each year, Ateliers offer an intensive studio program for the serious artist-in-training. The ateliers (French for artist’s studio) are based on the traditional teaching model of the 19th-century European academies, where dedicated art students apprenticed with a master artist. Atelier students are given an individual studio space to complete projects independently under the guidance of their instructor. Working together in group studios, atelier students enjoy the benefit of creative influence and dialogue among their peers within a focused environment. Enrollment in the atelier programs is yearly, with nine months of dedicated instruction. For the 2013-2014 school year, the ateliers run September 16, 2013 through June 13, 2014. Aristides and Kang-O’Higgins students make a 30-hour-per-week studio commitment, including working half of every day from the figure model. Students of Faigin work independently for a minimum of 15 hours in the studio each week, in addition to attending two weekly teaching sessions. Atelier students receive a 10% discount on all concurrent classes and workshops as well as free access to all Drop-In Figure Studios and any Lecture Series (see pp. 14–15). Occasionally, mid-year transfers are allowed — please inquire with the Registrar at 800.880.3898. To schedule a visit or to receive application materials, email Carol@GageAcademy.org or call 206.343.4243 x15, or 800.880.3898.

FAIGIN ATELIER Still-Life Painting Gary Faigin
Based on the 19th-century model for training painters, this four-year diploma program provides time-tested methods for solving pictorial problems. Aristides teaches in stages: serious beginning students focus on drawing; more advanced students move into monochromatic and then fully-chromatic painting. Fourth-year students work on individual projects with guest mentors. Work from casts, the model and master copies in a series of progressively complex projects. Intended for long-term students, the Aristides Atelier offers you the necessary vocabulary to create well-designed and well-executed drawings and paintings.
Intended for long-term students, the KangO’Higgins Atelier offers the opportunity to work on increasingly complex independent projects under the close guidance of your instructor. You work with line and tone, light and shadow, color theory and mixing, proportion and anatomy, as well as different approaches to life drawing and painting. Learn to convey the essential nature of your subjects through finding the balance between technical accuracy and expressive gesture. Short slide and technical demonstration lectures help you add to your skills and place your work into a wider historical and contemporary context.
The Faigin Atelier offers painting students the opportunity to focus their studio practice on the study of still-life arrangements over the course of one to several years. The intimate studio setting enables you to devote as much time as you wish to creating paintings, without the limitations of model time or weather conditions. Because everyone shares the same focus, optimal conditions for creative interchange and dialogue develop. You work toward success using the still life as a tool for the development of your own artistic voice, creating original, lively pictures that express your ideas and feelings, and focus on technique, rendering and composition.

Print logo colors
Our logo colors must appear exactly the same every time they are used. On printed materials, Wells Fargo logo colors — Wells Fargo Red and Wells Fargo Yellow — must always match their CMYK formula respectively, whether printing on coated or uncoated stock. Never substitute other colors. This is especially important since certain paper stocks and different types of media may alter the way a color looks when reproduced. For this reason, a color check while the job is on press or in final production is essential. Drawdowns are strongly recommended in all cases. For print jobs requiring spot color pages, special spot ink formulas are provided from the Brand Management Team at brand@wellsfargo.com.

YOUTH PROGRAMS: Introductions
Meet Julie Alpert, Youth Teaching Artist “My favorite part about teaching art to youth is how much I learn about my own art practice in the process. Gage Teen Art Studios give me the flexibility to develop and teach ideas that are interesting to me, or that I am sorting out in my studio with my own work. Through planning and teaching classes like Urban Landscape Watercolor, Contemporary Still Life, and Exquisite Corpse Collage, I become better at articulating complicated drawing and painting concepts, not only to my students, but to myself. I want to cultivate a love for making art in young Julie Alpert people and Gage makes it easy; there is just the right amount of relaxed socializing and rigorous learning. And who can say no to free pizza? I always tell people how much I would have benefitted from this kind of programming when I was a teen.
