All of the teaching artists at Gage help me understand why something in my picture isn’t working, and guide me through how to make it better without changing my voice. The results are always great pieces I can utilize in my portfolio.” Read more about the Youth Programs at Gage on pages 24-27.

see the beauty of the world and long to be one with it, to make it part of myself, no longer separate. I have spent my life as an artist in constant practice striving to perfect my craft in order to visually communicate some part of this truth and beauty I feel in my heart. Color is the constant challenge in my work, and my primary passion (with flat shape running a close second). Over my long career I have made many shifts in subject matter and style, but these two visual imperatives have remained constant. My new work weaves together “Layers of inside and outside visual motifs and artistic techniques from spaces seen in both the Persian Eastern and Western cultures, both ancient and modern. Strongly outlined flat shapes influenced borders and the main are juxtaposed with three-dimensionally body of these images become a rendered forms; contemporary clothing and metaphor for the overlapping architecture share the canvas with visual worlds of the conscious and the motifs from ancient civilizations; and bold, unconscious. What part is dream painterly brushwork lives in harmony with areas of stylized pattern. The palette choices and what part reality — and, evoke both the vibrant colors of the Fauves, where is the division?” and the subtler harmonies of Persian miniature painting. — Terry Furchgott Teaching is also a great love of mine. The joy of a student who gave up on art in grade school, now realizing that she can draw; or the excitement of another when he begins to truly SEE COLOR everywhere — these moments are inspiring and wonderful. To see, to draw accurately, to simplify — to internalize these lessons through hard work and rigorous practice is stressed over and over again in my classes as the necessary base for successful future work. I have a close rapport with my students; and in my interaction with their unique ways of seeing and creating I am constantly discovering something new to try, some more effective way of doing things, and some new beauty to appreciate.

Sound Made Visible Trimpin, artist

Seattle painter and Gage teaching artist Kimberly Trowbridge joins us to talk about her colorful and inventive work, where energy and process are revealed in the lively look of the images themselves. A devotee of both the fine art of figurative painting and the modern movement, Trowbridge approaches her paintings in the spirit of invention and discovery, and we’ll look at the variety of imagery that results, as well as follow a few works in progress. We’ll also talk about some of her artistic influences.

Kimberly Trowbridge

MacArthur Genius winner and longtime-Seattle resident Trimpin is much more well-known worldwide than in his adopted city. His remarkable work — giant mechanical sculptures which move and make music in response to their environment — fits into no one category, nor do the spectacular drawings he does in preparation. We’ll look at video documentation of some of his major pieces, and discuss how he works out his ideas on paper before embarking on their construction. *Join us on Friday, June 7 for an exclusive screening of, TRIMPIN: The Sound of Invention, a film by Peter Esmonde. 7:00pm Geo Studio free!

Artist Residencies 101 Jeanne Dodds, artist

May 23

Working as a Teaching Artist Michael Lorefice, artist

Rick Araluce is a local sculptor who uses multidisciplinary approaches to sculpture and installation. He will discuss the various steps and guidelines artists must know to prepare, assemble, and submit a strong application to grants, fellowships, and public art opportunities, including the basic “boilerplate” items found universally in submission criteria.

Residencies are opportunities for artists to extend their studio practice in a specific, often secluded environment to explore ideas, push boundaries, and expand community; and can often serve as an alternative to other post-degree programs. Jeanne Dodds, a Seattle-based artist, will address various details such as researching residencies, application requirements, finances, and how to prepare for when the date arrives.

Teaching art can expand your reach into the art community, and even be a catalyst for new ideas in your own work. Join artist Michael Lorefice as he talks about his experience teaching art to an array of students in multiple community art schools and colleges. Lorefice will talk about how to build the experience and skills necessary to approach teaching art to people of all levels and abilities; and provide ideas for different ways to approach the schools where you are interested in teaching.

Rick Araluce’s impossibly small worlds lure the viewer to a mysterious place where reason is mocked and the subconscious has free reign. A set builder for the Seattle Opera by day, Araluce is the recipient of a 2009 Pollock-Krasner Award, and the 2008 Ester Gottlieb Award.

Jeanne Dodds has led classes, workshops and guest lectures at numerous sites including the Portland Art Museum, Antioch University, Powerful Arts, the Boise Art Museum, the Frye Art Museum, and Gage Academy of Art.

Michael Lorefice earned his MFA from the Memphis College of Art. He has been featured in New American Paintings and has been an artist-in-residence at the Santa Fe Art Institute and Constance Saltonstall Foundation.

Fiona McGuigan’s work explores the process of memorization, recollecting, layering and the reassembling of one image to many. By asking questions around how we access visual memory, her ink drawings and collages use a restrictive process to obsessively re-create hundreds of drawings of the same image.

Note — the awards ceremony will be held at 6:30pm, prior to the Tom Sherwood lecture at 7:00pm.

Students of the Faigin Atelier April 12 - May 3 Opening Reception: Friday, April 19, 6:00-8:00pm Gary Faigin’s Still-Life Atelier students present their most recent paintings in this annual show. Using the still life as a tool for the development of their own artistic voice, these student works vary in composition and style, from elaborate, realistic depictions of commonplace objects to more abstracted arrangements that are symbolic and narrative by design.

The Aristides Atelier Thesis Show May 10 – June 7, 2013 Artists’ Reception: Friday, May 10, 6:00pm-8:00pm Graduates Bobby DiTrani and Stephanie K. Johnson exhibit their thesis work created during their fourth and final year in the Aristides Atelier. The work in this culminating exhibition expresses a clear voice for the graduates, and shows off DiTrani and Johnson’s dedication to learning every aspect of their art and applying it to their particular vision of the world.

Now in its seventh year, the annual self-portrait competition has always shown off students’ best portrait work in competition for great prizes — and this year it just got even better — with a $1,000 Gage Tuition Grant to first place! Juried by internationally renowned artist Patti Warashina.

Students of the Kang-O’Higgins Atelier April 12 - May 3 Opening Reception: Friday, April 19, 6:00-8:00pm An annual show of the drawings, paintings and sculpture created by the students of the KangO’Higgins Atelier. The Atelier is based on two pillars of study: students are required to work in a strong observational tradition while also working on their personal imaginative studies. The fusion of observation skills with imaginative practice gives the students a vocabulary with which they can express themselves. How they do that, and what they have to say is entirely up to them.

Students of the Aristides Atelier May 10 - June 7 Opening Reception: Friday, May 10, 6:00pm-8:00pm Students of the Aristides Atelier present classical drawings and paintings founded in traditional academic techniques while highlighting the artists’ own observational skills. This annual exhibition displays the entire arc of the Atelier, demonstrating how students begin with a focus on drawing and advance to full chromatic paintings as they develop a vocabulary to create well-executed and sensitive works of art.

Sherwood has lived and worked in Bellingham for over 40 years, and is a central figure in that community; but regrettably, his work has had little public exposure. This is Sherwood’s first substantial solo show, and the largest public exhibition of his work to date.

The Seattle Sketchbook Show April 5 – May 3 Artists’ Reception: Friday, April 19, 6:00pm-8:00pm Concurrent Artist’s Lecture: Friday, April 19, 7:00pm By invitation and juried submission, over 40 artists present sketchbooks that reflect a variety of work, including daily drawings, studies for painting and sculpture, and content for special projects. Sketchbooks will be available for viewing in the gallery, and select books will be viewable online. The sketchbooks feature artists utilizing a wide array of media, and include Joey Veltkamp, Dan Webb, Margie Livingston, Iole Alessandrini, Cable Griffith, Serrah Russell, and more. The Seattle Sketchbook Show is sponsored by Dakota Art Store, in partnership with Stillman and Birn and Faber-Castell.

Sherwood holds a BA in English Literature from William Jewell College, and a MA in Theological Literary Criticism from the University of Chicago. Observation of an artist’s process, often found in part within the pages of a sketchbook, is a window to their world and their work. Exhibiting artists Amanda Manitach and Ben Beres will show examples of their work and works in progress, and discuss their process — from collecting source material and sketching, to what their current obsessions are, and how these deliberate practices and research interests allow them to manifest complex ideas in a multitude of media. Amanda Manitach is a practicing artist, curator at Seattle University’s Hedreen Gallery, and frequent contributor to City Arts Magazine. Her current work is rooted in an exploration of gender, the abject, language, ritual, and the psychogeography of cities. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Bellevue Arts Museum, Lawrimore Project, SOIL Gallery, SAM Rental Gallery, Roq la Rue, and Cullom Gallery, among others; and she was recently shortlisted for the Stranger Genius Award in Visual Arts.

Working from masterworks, photographs, and still lifes in painting, drawing, and collage, learn how to use notan to build simpler and stronger compositions. This class does not promote an Asian style, but rather, a universal principle applicable to all types of art. Katrina Wolfe, detail 8

thE munSEll Color SYStEm: thEorY & AppliCAtion Carlos Madrid The way artists visually match color today is the result of the work of artist and art professor Albert H. Munsell over a century ago. Join Carlos Madrid, a disciple of the celebrated Norwegian painter Odd Nerdrum, for an in-depth exploration into the art and science of this system, where color is numerically classified based on three color dimensions: hue, value (lightness), and chroma (color purity).

There is no landscape you know as well as the human face. Over five intense days of drawing from portrait models and your own self-portrait, you learn the essential techniques and concepts of proportion, line, value, volume, structure and composition in rendering complex portraits. Focus on the basic concepts of drawing applied to the human skull, and learn to think visually, translating what you see into a compelling portrait. Through demonstrations and hands-on practice you learn clear and flexible working methods, designed to increase your perceptual observation, problem solving skills, and technical application. Wa1304

Featuring daily instructor demonstrations on a small painting, you explore the systematic application of complex color strategies in your own still life painting. Working with the concepts and theories of the Munsell Color System, you spend the week creating a compelling still life that exhibits your technical mastery and artistic understanding of the world of color. This rigorous workshop addresses accurate drawing of the large forms and gestures of the figure, the translation of those forms into color masses, the depiction of the color of the light that pervades an environment, as well as paint handling, surface preparation and other technical issues. Working quickly and decisively on one-day figure paintings, you learn to simplify complex observed scenarios, create compelling personal compositions with the human figure as your subject, and to make paintings that work as a cohesive whole.

Through discussions, demonstrations and exploratory exercises, Grimaldi introduces you to his own technique for developing a figurative drawing with an emphasis on chiaroscuro to heighten the mystery of form. While working on a weeklong pose, you learn fundamental concepts of visual perception, and explore elements of proportion, gesture, anatomy, perspective and design through constructing an exhaustively studied figure drawing from life.

Nothing is more emotionally compelling to observe than the human face. Magazines flaunt idealized facial beauty; Hollywood packages expressive faces for big-screen cinema; TV capitalizes on talking heads to give the facts and features of the day. Over six evenings, Gary Faigin, author of the acclaimed, The Artist’s Complete Guide to Facial Expression, presents an animated discourse on the foundations of drawing the head. Drawing from models and showing slides, he guides you to a broader understanding of this fascinating subject.

There is nothing formulaic or absolute about your trajectory from art student to professional artist. Every artist follows a unique career path based on career opportunities invented or proffered. Nonetheless, building and sustaining an art career includes basic practices with which every artist should be familiar. This four-part lecture series outlines time-honored principles for turning your passion into your professional career.

The works in this stunning exhibition are all from the private collection of the 1st Earl of Iveagh, Edward Cecil Guinness (1847–1927), heir to the Guinness brewing fortune. The collection is usually on view at Kenwood House, a neoclassical villa in Hampstead Heath in London, but because the villa is closed for renovation, 48 of the greatest works from the Iveagh Bequest are coming to the Seattle Art Museum (SAM). Now you can experience these stunning masterworks through the unique perspective of Gage co-founder and celebrated artist and critic, Gary Faigin. Discover the remarkable artists behind the art, explore the historical and political climate of the times, and marvel at the beauty of these iconic images. Gary Faigin is the Artistic Director and cofounder of Gage Academy of Art. He received his training at the Art Students League in New York, and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. CONTEMPORARY PAINTING SEMINAR Julia Ricketts Sunday 2:00pm-5:00pm 4/14-6/16

Examine the painting techniques and style of Rembrandt in a comparative study with Rubens. Both are monumental figures of the Baroque period; Rembrandt as the most renowned artist of the Dutch golden age, and Rubens with his own unique contributions to the art of painting. Focus on comparisons between the approach to painting from imprimatura to underpainting to the application of paint layers between the two artists and the different distinctive surfaces they achieve. Adhering to the original pigments and recipes of the period, you select a masterpiece from each master to copy as well as discuss the other relevant aspects such as historical context, drawings and other prominent artists of the time.

An extension of Portrait Painting in Oil, this course builds on fundamental concepts with special attention paid to essential issues such as lighting, composition, accessories and more advanced oil painting techniques. Focus on longer poses as you tackle portrait concepts to increase your aptitude in rendering costume elements, hands, and the environment.

Study trends and ideas in contemporary painting while you develop your individual voice as a painter. In this seminar-style class you create a small body of work that hangs together as a group. Readings and discussion enhance in-class work time and regular critiques. All media and subjects welcome.

unning from mid-September through mid-June each year, Ateliers offer an intensive studio program for the serious artist-in-training. The ateliers (French for artist’s studio) are based on the traditional teaching model of the 19th-century European academies, where dedicated art students apprenticed with a master artist. Atelier students are given an individual studio space to complete projects independently under the guidance of their instructor. Working together in group studios, atelier students enjoy the benefit of creative influence and dialogue among their peers within a focused environment. Enrollment in the atelier programs is yearly, with nine months of dedicated instruction. For the 2012-2013 school year, the ateliers run September 10, 2012 through June 14, 2013. Aristides and Kang-O’Higgins students make a 30-hour-per-week studio commitment, including working half of every day from the figure model. Students of Faigin work independently for a minimum of 15 hours in the studio each week, in addition to attending two weekly teaching sessions. Atelier students receive a 10% discount on all concurrent classes and workshops (including Aristides in Florence: Drawing Workshop & Art History Tour, see p. 4), as well as free access to all Drop-In Figure Studios and any Lecture Series (see pp. 12–13). Based on the 19th-century model for training painters, this four-year diploma program provides time-tested methods for solving pictorial problems. Aristides teaches in stages; serious beginning students focus on drawing; more advanced students move into monochromatic and then fully chromatic painting. Fourth-year students work on individual projects with guest mentors. Work from casts, the model and master copies in a series of progressively complex projects. Intended for long-term students, the Aristides Atelier offers you the necessary vocabulary to create well-designed and well-executed drawings and paintings.

Intended for long-term students, the KangO’Higgins Atelier offers the opportunity to work on increasingly complex independent projects under the close guidance of your instructor. You work with line and tone, light and shadow, color theory and mixing, proportion and anatomy, as well as different approaches to life drawing and painting. Learn to convey the essential nature of your subjects through finding the balance between technical accuracy and expressive gesture. Short slide and technical demonstration lectures help you add to your skills and place your work into a wider historical and contemporary context.

The Faigin Atelier offers painting students the opportunity to focus their studio practice on the study of still-life arrangements over the course of one to several years. The intimate studio setting enables you to devote as much time as you wish to creating paintings, without the limitations of model time or weather conditions. Because everyone shares the same focus, optimal conditions for creative interchange and dialogue develop. You work toward success using the still life as a tool for the development of your own artistic voice, creating original, lively pictures that express your ideas and feelings, and focus on technique, rendering and composition.

“As a teaching artist I am an instigator of cooperative collaborative learning environments, where everyone in the studio class is a part of the creative action. The amazingly diverse language of art making includes processes both specific and general, their uniqueness demonstrating the breadth and variety of individual works and artistic voices. I believe everyone benefits from the challenge of art making, that the opportunity to feel the frustration and jubilation that comes through one’s studio practice awakens self-knowledge and Nate Herth leads a workshop at Gage. potential that is valuable in all areas of life. The youth programs at Gage do just that: they provide an opportunity to experiment and experience a sundry of art disciplines and media with instructors whose philosophies and biographies reflect many different routes to successful growth and learning.”

Learn the basics of drawing anatomy in a classical 19th century French tradition! In this class, you study prints of human anatomy including hands, feet, faces, and the body instead of from actual sculptures or live models. The teachings are just as relevant today as they were over a hundred years ago! Classical anatomist Jethaniel Peterka will teach you to simplify an image into big shapes using straight lines as a means to proper proportion and placement. The plates will increase in difficulty as you work your way through them.

Create art through an exploration of traditional craft from different cultures. Design beautiful pieces of art meant for celebration, recreation, and decoration. From paper mâché to shadow puppets, explore a variety of handmade objects from South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. Find out why these traditional objects continue to enrich the lives of many, and how to tell stories of your own through sculpture.

Work with Xerox transfer techniques such as how to effectively use gum arabic and gel mediums. Because the process doesn’t typically require a studio or printmaking facility, this alternative process can be effectively practiced at home. The course is suited for all levels of printmakers and those interested in printmaking processes.

EXquiSitE CorpSE CollAGE Julie Alpert Creative collage! Experiment with short drawings that get passed clockwise every five minutes for an hour until the original work has transformed into something new. Make a collage inspired by music, then partner with a friend to merge the two works into one. Or make ink drawings that get torn into collage material, mixed into a pile, and divided among everyone to reassemble into new works of art. Making art with others can stimulate the way you think about your own style and process.
