Learn to draw the human face with ease and accuracy! For beginning drawing students who find the human face intimidating and frustrating, this course is designed to give the necessary practice and information to navigate facial structures, proportions, and light. The first half of the class is strictly short poses, as students sharpen their ability to quickly block in the basic shapes to capture the likeness of the sitter. The duration of the poses lengthen into the final weeks, giving time to render light and shadow, and develop higher contrast in their drawings. Instruction includes discussion about charcoal materials, drawing demonstrations, practical methods for capturing the form of important facial features, as well as developing a clear focus and concept for each drawing.

There’s more than one way to apply paint! This class is designed to expand the manner in which you apply paint to canvas, and develop your conceptual approach to a figure painting. Painting from the live model, you explore three different approaches of the brush to canvas based on certain artists’ techniques. First you develop a painting the way Titian used the brush to push, pull and scumble paint. Secondly, explore the quick-spirited bouncing brush of the Impressionists; and finally, develop a painting using heavy slabs and drags of thick paint in the style of the Bay Area Painters. Going beyond traditional picture painting into the area of process and ideas, we move into the art of our time as expressed in painting. The reasoning and techniques behind key painter-thinkers starting with the 1950s to the present are presented and experienced. Student input and requests are considered about known and important artists in the western tradition of general interest. This is an opportunity to understand and experience the process of painters who remain a mystery, beginning with Joseph Albers and Hans Hofmann. While a general overview of landmark artists is presented, the format remains flexible according to the class general interest. Great abstract painting honors the formal requirements of painting as much as great representational painting does. Form, shape, value, color, composition and space are not abandoned in favor of strictly conceptual approaches. Instead, these formal requirements are utilized to build strong abstract landscapes that, while maintaining some foothold in discernible content, bring greater attention to the aesthetic experience. Students work independently on subjects of their own choosing, while experimenting with the various methods for inducing abstraction. Each week includes a critique, lecture and/or demonstration. Landscapes by both artists are the main source of subject. First and most important is an understanding of the innovations of Cézanne, referred to by both Matisse and Picasso as, “The Father of Us All.” Morandi pushed their common goal of spirituality in art to even greater innovations as to color, meaningful abstraction, surface sensitivity and in finding that additional reality — a characteristic effect of a work of art. The emphasis is on learning rather than picture making, and to give new tools and ideas to the competent painter through usually serial exercises searching for both clarity and ambiguity in painting. While attending the Boston Normal Art School in the late 19th century, artist and educator Albert H. Munsell (1858-1918) was keenly aware that a practical theory of color did not exist. From his own work and experiments, he devised the Munsell Color System, a practical notation system in which color is defined according to hue, value, and chroma. Munsell’s work was hugely influential in evolving color science theory at the turn of the century, and served as the basis for today’s color matching technology. Juliette aristides

Trois crayon drawing (literally “three crayon” drawing) is a simple way of creating a fully tonal portrait drawing by replicating the flesh palette. This method, which incorporates black, white, and sanguine crayons on a fleshtoned ground, was used by Hans Holbein the Younger, Michelangelo, Rubens, and Watteau. While learning this technique you will also learn compositional strategies for making expressive portraits and the structural anatomy and perspective of the head.

Metal point is more commonly referred to as silverpoint, and was practiced primarily during the renaissance by artists such as Albrecht Durer, Jan van Eyck and Leonardo Da Vinci. In this class we cover the basics of materials, drawing grounds, techniques and the variety of metals used in the process, such as copper, silver and gold.

Build on techniques introduced in Illustrative Drawing I, with a deeper emphasis on composition, subject matter and the artist’s personal approach, and an eye toward the finished piece. Careful observation to detail, exaggeration, distortion and unique viewing angles are embraced as tools for “pulling focus,” and making an ink wash and watercolor drawing personal and specific to the individual artist. $25 partial materials fee payable to instructor.

From how to make effective marks to the application of fine detail, this brief but intensive workshop teaches you the skills you need to work with and enjoy the medium of soft pastel. Working from inspiring set ups containing colorful flowers, fruit and ceramics you complete multiple dynamic studies exploring how directly applied color can suggest light, shadow, mood and volume. $15 partial materials fee payable to instructor. For students new to pastel this workshop teaches you the basics needed to enroll in Furchgott’s winter quarter Pastel Portrait class.

In this two-day workshop, you have the opportunity to render a life-size bust in clay from the model in a sustained pose. Working in solid clay on an armature, you learn to animate the face, and how the underlying muscles work to create the expression. Leave with photos of the model to work on further if you choose, and learn to hollow out the bust after you finish. Price includes clay.

VENETIAN PAINTING TECHNIQUES OF THE OLD MASTERS haMid Zavareei

Sat-Sun 9:30am-4:30pm 11/15-11/16 [2 days]

Italians adapted the Flemish painting technique that originated in the Northern European Renaissance by substituting the egg tempera underpainting with oil paint and using canvas as opposed to wood panels, which allowed for larger paintings and compositions. Follow this tradition as you create master copies and learn to lay the initial paint layer called Imprematura, and develop the underpainting, working with the layers of scumbles and glazes to the final touches and highlights. Based on the 19th-century model for training painters, this four-year diploma program provides time-tested methods for solving pictorial problems. Aristides teaches in stages: serious beginning students focus on drawing; more advanced students move into monochromatic and then fully-chromatic painting. Fourth-year students work on individual projects with guest mentors. Work from casts, the model and master copies in a series of progressively complex projects. Intended for long-term students, the Aristides Atelier offers you the necessary vocabulary to create well-designed and well-executed drawings and paintings.

Intended for long-term students, the KangO’Higgins Atelier offers the opportunity to work on increasingly complex independent projects under the close guidance of your instructor. You work with line and tone, light and shadow, color theory and mixing, proportion and anatomy, as well as different approaches to life drawing and painting. Learn to convey the essential nature of your subjects through finding the balance between technical accuracy and expressive gesture. Short slide and technical demonstration lectures help you add to your skills and place your work into a wider historical and contemporary context.

The Faigin Atelier offers painting students the opportunity to focus their studio practice on the study of still-life arrangements over the course of one to several years. The intimate studio setting enables you to devote as much time as you wish to creating paintings, without the limitations of model time or weather conditions. Because everyone shares the same focus, optimal conditions for creative interchange and dialogue develop. You work toward success using the still life as a tool for the development of your own artistic voice, creating original, lively pictures that express your ideas and feelings, and focus on technique, rendering and composition.

The Magrath Sculpture Atelier is a new multiyear, part-time Atelier designed to confer the core disciplines needed to become a practicing figurative sculptor at a high level of excellence. You work five days a week from the model or from other sources, and become adept in both traditional approaches as well as contemporary concerns in a variety of media. Build cumulatively upon the core skills of drawing and modeling from life, while adding critical understanding of anatomy, composition in the round and relief as well as technical skills such as mold making, casting, basic fabrication and subtractive techniques in wood, stone, metal and composite materials. The full series is designed over three years, but may be taken part time over several years, and will culminate in a year of independent study and the production of a final, significant project.

ateliers (French for artist’s studio) are based on the traditional teaching model of the 19th-century european academies, where dedicated art students apprenticed with a master artist. atelier students are given an individual studio space to complete projects independently under the guidance of their instructor. Working together in group studios, atelier students enjoy the benefit of creative influence and dialogue among their peers within a focused environment. enrollment in the atelier programs is yearly, with nine months of dedicated instruction. For the 2014-2015 school year, the ateliers run september 15, 2014 through June 19, 2015. aristides and Kang-O’higgins students make a 30-hourper-week studio commitment, including working half of every day from the figure model. students of Faigin work independently for a minimum of 15 hours in the studio each week, in addition to attending two weekly teaching sessions. atelier students receive a 10% discount on all concurrent classes and workshops as well as free access to all drop-in Figure studios and any lecture series. Occasionally, mid-year transfers are allowed — please inquire with the registrar at 800.880.3898. to schedule a visit or to receive application materials, email carol@Gageacademy.org or call 206.343.4243 x15, or 800.880.3898.

Students become teacher as teacher becomes student in this collaborative installation work proposed by the Northwest School Public Art class in September 2014, taught by Seattle artist Curtis Erlinger. In the classroom and studio, writing and drawing are used as acts of translation and reflection, simultaneously retracing and resisting nostalgia while celebrating and commemorating the elusive moment, where the attempt to recreate something lost highlights the inability to fully do so.

Surrounded by art and artists every day, it’s hard not to be inspired at Gage. A welcome departure from email, Gage staff let their creative juices flow and create work as diverse as the lives they lead outside of the office. This exhibition gives a behind-the-scenes peek at what current Gage staff are making including photography, prints, drawings and paintings.

Drawing is the beginning of things — the first communication. It can be deceptively simple, just paper and a marking tool. It can feel fragile. The catalysts for the predominately geometric work of our newest Gage teaching artist Michael Ottersen are contradictions, archetypes and narratives. It is the tension between the forms that lead to potential narratives about experience, geography and history. Ottersen prefers that the information in his work is time released providing the viewer with a slow read of initially simple scenarios in a complicated process.

12:00pm – 4:00pm

A new, annual event at Gage — we’re asking three of our beloved teaching artists to kick off Fall Quarter by cleaning out their studios and bringing it all to Gage! This is your opportunity to collect artwork of all sizes and to fit any budget from Mitch Albala, Barbara Fugate and Terry Furchgott. Hundreds of works will be presented, from still-life studies, figure drawings, landscape paintings and everything in between. Students and the public are invited to purchase artwork and celebrate all three artists on both days, but purchased work will not be removed until the final sale in October.

SPecial event!
