MIxED-MEDIA IMAGE LAYERING Patrick LoCicero Sat-Sun 9:30am-4:30pm 6/7-6/8 [2 days]

Learn how to paint ripe, colorful fruit by first studying master copies, then with direct observation from life set ups. Pay close attention to pictorial composition, value structure and gestural dynamics of the painting while learning how to apply classical painting techniques.

Artists are constantly making decisions: both the conscious and unconscious minds play roles in these decisions. Believing that experience nourishes intuition, this crash course is a “lab” designed to exercise and build compositional skills. To this end, the immediacy of collage lends itself well to fast, fun and informative projects emphasizing structure, unity, rhythm, shape, positive and negative space and more. Alternatively, you may work in any medium of your choice.

Practice reducing a scene to its key elements. Pencil, pen or watercolor; emphasis is placed on recording the basics- the viewer’s impression and main idea. An understanding of general principals of perspective is helpful, but guidelines, vanishing points, etc., are foregone in favor of loose capture, while still invoking the artist’s subjective viewpoint and sensibility. Class is held outdoors if weather permits, but principles can be demoed and explored through interior settings and stilllives. Each day includes a demo on a specific focus; contours, contrast, composition, artist compositional options, etc.

Florence Academy instructor and internationally celebrated sculptor Eran Webber leads this weeklong sculpting workshop, offering an intensive approach to sculpting the figure from life. Immerse yourself in a comprehensive investigation of the human form and discover the tools to intelligently compose an accurate and convincing figure in three dimensions. Explore sculpting the figure from life through the teaching method of the Florence Academy, which derives from the classicalRealist tradition, rooted in the Renaissance, and revived by the major Realist academic ateliers of the 19th century. This approach allows students to balance both a visual and constructive approach to understanding the mechanism of the body. Regular demonstrations and individualized critiques guide you through fundamental and advanced concepts of figure construction, light and form modeling, as well as anatomical and proportional principles to support a visual appreciation, while analyzing depth and understanding contour movement in space. Some previous figure drawing experience is recommended. No prior sculpting experience is needed. WA1405

Urban Scenes of Christopher Martin Hoff

May 8

Michael Stasinos

The work of painter and longtime Gage instructor mark Kang o’Higgins grapples with challenging issues ranging from the political to the familial. Mark joins host Gary Faigin to discuss his working process and attitude towards painterly expression, his use of scale as an important element in his presentation, and what other contemporary art he looks to for inspiration. Also, what it means for an artist to engage with difficult and disturbing subject matter, and the challenges that arise.

Seattle artist Christopher martin Hoff’s (1976–2012) colleague and close friend michael stasinos joins us to look at and discuss Hoff’s spectacular Seattle street scenes, all done on location and often with Stasinos painting his plein-air cityscapes nearby. Said Hoff, “My intention is not to create something removed from experience, but rather to weave the shared experiences of hundreds of these moments back into one resonant and handmade surface.” David Kassan

Mon-Fri 9:30am-4:30pm 8/4-8/8 [5 days] Explore life drawing methods to investigate the underlying rhythm, expression and emotion of the modern portrait, using pastel pencil with one pose for the duration to patiently observe and record our findings. All observation is cumulative and used towards finishing the final work. Instruction includes discussion of practical technical information on pastel pencils, the properties of light on form, and how the topography/depth of the face’s form can be visualized and represented. Most importantly, students learn to transcend the materials so that their full concentration is placed on expressing the model’s presence and emotion. WA1414

In Her Own Words Juliette Aristides

Mark Kang-O’Higgins

Gage Atelier instructor Juliette Aristides is “a painter who seeks to understand and convey the human spirit through art.” What does that mean in terms of the way she approaches her work, and the decisions she makes as to what to paint, and how? Juliette discusses how her art has evolved over time, and how she feels about being a “traditional” realist in an era when such art is often ignored or marginalized in the mainstream art world. Included is a discussion of the core values she thinks are most important to convey to her students.

Showing Your Artwork Outside of Seattle Brian Cypher, Artist

Interested in showing your work in galleries outside of Seattle but not sure how? Skagit Valley artist Brian Cypher describes his path as a selftaught artist and how he has found opportunities and created relationships for showing his work in New York, California and France. Cypher will discuss the aspects of artwork promotion that have worked best for him, including how to build a strong web presence. Brian Cypher is a self taught artist, living and working in the Skagit Valley. Over the past twenty years, Cypher has been showing his artwork throughout the Northwest. In the recent years, his work has been included in exhibitions in France and New York City, including two one-person exhibitions in New York City and Seattle. His works rely on intuited abstractions that reference nature, systems and invented forms.

For all of their painterly realism, Solmssen’s works have a geometric layout and sparseness of detail that lends them an abstract quality. As an instructor, he demonstrates methods for developing the pictorial elements in your oil paintings with rich, saturated color, high contrasts, atmospheric depth and a variety of paint surfaces. His sensitivity to composition and light values represents the ideal model for intermediate to advanced landscape painters. Solmssen gives painting demonstrations and works with each student individually. You spend time painting in Seattle’s Volunteer Park, as well as focusing on the city’s beautiful old homes and buildings and the landscape that surrounds them. WA1417

CONTEMPORARY PAINTING: COLOR, IDEAS & TECHNIQUES Charles Emerson Thursday 9:30am-12:30pm 4/10-6/12 Going beyond the traditional picture painting into the area of process and ideas in seeing and perception leading to individual development by way of exercises rather than finished paintings and the willingness to destroy in order to learn, we move into the art of our time as expressed in painting. The reasoning and techniques behind key painter-thinkers starting with the 1950s to the present are presented and experienced. Student input and requests are considered about known and important artists in the western tradition of general interest. This is an opportunity to understand and experience the process of painters who remain a mystery, beginning with Joseph Albers and Hans Hofmann. While a general overview of landmark artists will be presented, the format remains flexible according to the class general interest. This is a two quarter course, meeting two days per week. Winter focuses on the skeleton with spring devoted to the muscular system. A requisite for the serious figure artist; you emerge with a durable reference figure and irreplaceable anatomical expertise. Figure sculpting and anatomy experience recommended. Class price includes clay and armature.

PRIVATE MENTORING PROGRAM Mentor Assigned Individually

In the tradition of all professional art schools, Gage offers drop-in figure studios every day of the week. Artists work independently from the model on a drop-in basis, gaining hands-on practice in drawing, painting or sculpting the figure. In Artist’s Choice sessions, the pose is set by a Gage instructor who works alongside studio artists for the duration of the pose.

In the Reserved Figure Studios, a group of dedicated artists work from one figure pose throughout the 10-week quarter, with the pose set on the first night. Artists must register before the quarter begins to guarantee an easel space.

Connect with a Gage mentor for guidance on your creative journey. Depending on your skill level, mentors give private art lessons or assess your work, make suggestions for further study and help develop a road map for your future study. To enroll, call Gage for help with determining the best match for your mentoring needs.

THE ART OF ITALY: RENAISSANCE & BAROQUE Carol Hendricks Wednesday 6:00-8:00pm 4/16-5/21

VENICE: The Golden Age of Art and Music Friday, May 9

Nothing is more emotionally compelling to observe than the human face. Magazines flaunt idealized facial beauty; Hollywood packages expressive faces for big-screen cinema; TV capitalizes on talking heads to give the facts and features of the day. Over six evenings, Faigin, author of the acclaimed The Artist’s Complete Guide to Facial Expression, presents an animated discourse on the foundations of drawing the head. Drawing from models and showing slides, he guides you to a broader understanding of this fascinating subject.

The art of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque periods continues to fascinate and influence culture more than three centuries later. These lectures cover art from the 14th century through the 17th century, and look at works throughout Italy — from Florence and Tuscany to Rome, the Veneto, Milan and Naples. Explore and discuss painting, sculpture and architecture from its early medieval style to the harmony of the Renaissance and the dynamic style of the Baroque. Apr 16

Andrew Martin: Self Portraits February 21 – April 4

8th Annual Spitting Image Juried Self-Portrait Exhibition February 21 – April 4

That’s Art! The American Comic Strip from Mutt & Jeff to Doonesbury February 21 – April 4

Artists’ Reception: Friday, February 21, 6:00pm-8:00 pm Andrew Martin (1923–1997) was born in Paris and trained at both l’Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago. He lived and exhibited in New York and North Carolina, and for several years in the 1940s had a studio in Seattle’s then-disreputable Pioneer Square. From pencil sketches to fully realized oils, Martin’s self-portraits are selected from a large collection of his works at Gallery Andrew Martin in Port Townsend.

Students of the Faigin Atelier April 11 – May 4 Artists’ Reception: Friday, April 11, 6:00pm-8:00pm Faigin Atelier students present their most recent work in this annual show. Using the still life as a tool for the development of their own artistic voice, their paintings vary in composition and style, from elaborate, realistic depictions of commonplace objects to more abstracted arrangements that are symbolic and narrative by design.

Students of the Aristides Atelier May 9 – May 30 Artists’ Reception: Friday, May 9, 6:00pm-8:00pm Students of the Aristides Atelier present drawings and paintings founded in traditional academic techniques while highlighting the artists’ own observational skills. This exhibition displays the full arc of the atelier, demonstrating how students begin with a focus on drawing and advance to full chromatic paintings as they develop a vocabulary to create well-executed and sensitive works of art.

Artists’ Reception & Awards Ceremony: Friday, February 21, 6:00pm-8:00pm The annual juried self-portrait exhibition showcases students’ best portrait work in competition for hefty tuition prizes to encourage further study at Gage. The awards are $1000 to first place, $500 to second place and $250 to third place. Co-juried by the Nordic Heritage Museum’s Chief Curator Lizette Gradén, and SAM’s Deputy Director of Education and Public Programs Sandra Jackson-Dumont.

Students of the Kang-O’Higgins Atelier April 11 – May 4 Artists’ Reception: Friday, April 11, 6:00pm-8:00pm An annual show of the drawings, paintings and sculpture created by the students of the KangO’Higgins Atelier. The fusion of observation skills with imaginative practice gives the students a vocabulary with which they can express themselves. How they do that, and what they have to say is entirely up to them.

Graduates of the Aristides Atelier May 9 – May 30 Artists’ Reception: Friday, May 9, 6:00pm-8:00pm Graduates Savvy Dani, Kevin Miller, Ulan Moore and John Zadrozny exhibit thesis work created during their fourth and final year in the Aristides Atelier. The work in this culminating exhibition expresses a clear voice for the graduates, and shows off these artists’ dedication to learning every aspect of their art and applying it to their particular vision of the world.

The Rise and Fall of the Classic American Comic Strip

Margaret Davidson

Entry Gallery

Richard V. West Friday, February 21  7:00pm  Geo Studio, 3rd floor In Conjunction with That’s Art! The American Comic Strip from Mutt & Jeff to Doonesbury

The comic strip as we know it today had its origins in a bitter circulation war fought in the late 19th century between rival newspaper publishers Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. By 1924, the well-known critic Gilbert Seldes declared that the newspaper comic strip had become a true American art form, like jazz and the movies, which deserved to be taken seriously and enjoyed without guilt. Richard V. West explores the dynamics of this modern art form that, like jazz, impacted American cultural life at all levels for over a century.

Artists’ Reception: Friday, February 21, 6:00pm-8:00pm Concurrent Artist’s Lecture at right: Selected from a Seattle collection, the exhibition presents original drawings for the comic strips that enlivened American newspapers during the 20th century. Included are vintage examples of such well-known daily and Sunday features as L’il Abner and Blondie, and lesser-known strips from the 1930s and 1940s such as Tailspin Tommy and Hap Hopper. Modern strips include Peanuts, Hagar the Horrible and Doonesbury.

Art historian, curator and author Richard V. West is Director Emeritus of the Frye Art Museum, and a member of the Board of Trustees at Gage. A native of Prague, Czech Republic, he studied in Europe and the United States before receiving a master’s degree in art history from the University of California at Berkeley.

As the World Turns: Marking Time and Pointing at the Moon

Rebecca Cummins Friday, April 11  7:00pm  Geo Studio, 3rd floor

Artists’ Reception: Friday, April 11, 6:00pm-8:00pm Concurrent Artist’s Lecture at right:

In Conjunction with In Shadow

Rebecca Cummins explores the sculptural, experiential and sometimes humorous possibilities of light and natural phenomena, often referencing the history of optics in installations that have included a machine for making rainbows, a photographic rifle, paranoid dinner-table devices and a variety of sculptural and photographic approaches to marking time.

The pliable, shifting shapes of light and shadow make marks in surprising ways, and become fodder for the imaginative, dark and scientific work of Seattle-based artists Rebecca Cummins, Caroline Kapp, Pat de Caro and Jasmine Valandani. From photography to sculptural installation, they offer new ways to see the world around us.

Artist Reception: Friday, May 9, 6:00-8:00 pm Concurrent Artist’s Lecture at right:

Cummins grew up in a tiny river valley town in Iowa. She has a Ph.D. from the U. of Technology, Sydney, Australia and taught at the U. of Sydney for 16 years before moving to Seattle in 2001, where she is currently Associate Professor at the University of Washington. She has exhibited widely internationally and her public commissions are installed at the Seattle Public Library: Montlake Branch (SPL and the Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs) and the Exploratorium: Museum of Science, Art and Perception, San Francisco.

Breathless Delight in the Ordinary

The intense and reciprocal art of drawing is where Margaret Davidson focuses her energy. Through fields and layers of buttons, she depicts the surface/mark relationship, the interplay between illusion and reality, and concepts of the human presence on earth.

Margaret Davidson Friday, May 9  7:00pm  Geo Studio, 3rd floor In Conjunction with Margaret Davidson: Common Revelry

Exhibiting artist and retiring Gage teaching artist Margaret Davidson lectures on her work in the realm of drawing, and on her 20+ years of teaching at Gage. Davidson’s work shows her interest in the interplay between the drawing mark and the surface, and between illusion and reality. Working with those two sets of ideas she draws in the still life genre, and in something she says could be called, “abstract realism.” Margaret Davidson has a BFA from the University of Michigan and an MFA from the University of Washington. She has illustrated various books and journal articles, and is most recently the author of Contemporary Drawing: Key Concepts and Techniques. She is represented by Sisko Gallery in Seattle, Washington, and Anchor Art Space in Anacortes, Washington. See pages 11 and 12 for Margaret Davidson’s final classes at Gage.

ARISTIDES ATELIER Classical Drawing & Painting Juliette Aristides

KANG-O’HIGGINS ATELIER Drawing & Painting Mark Kang-O’Higgins

FAIGIN ATELIER Still-Life Painting Gary Faigin

Based on the 19th-century model for training painters, this four-year diploma program provides time-tested methods for solving pictorial problems. Aristides teaches in stages: serious beginning students focus on drawing; more advanced students move into monochromatic and then fully-chromatic painting. Fourth-year students work on individual projects with guest mentors. Work from casts, the model and master copies in a series of progressively complex projects. Intended for long-term students, the Aristides Atelier offers you the necessary vocabulary to create well-designed and well-executed drawings and paintings.

Intended for long-term students, the KangO’Higgins Atelier offers the opportunity to work on increasingly complex independent projects under the close guidance of your instructor. You work with line and tone, light and shadow, color theory and mixing, proportion and anatomy, as well as different approaches to life drawing and painting. Learn to convey the essential nature of your subjects through finding the balance between technical accuracy and expressive gesture. Short slide and technical demonstration lectures help you add to your skills and place your work into a wider historical and contemporary context.

The Faigin Atelier offers painting students the opportunity to focus their studio practice on the study of still-life arrangements over the course of one to several years. The intimate studio setting enables you to devote as much time as you wish to creating paintings, without the limitations of model time or weather conditions. Because everyone shares the same focus, optimal conditions for creative interchange and dialogue develop. You work toward success using the still life as a tool for the development of your own artistic voice, creating original, lively pictures that express your ideas and feelings, and focus on technique, rendering and composition.

youtH ProgrAms: Introductions

“My goal for every class is to create a space dedicated to practicing freedom of expression and critical thinking. I strive to incorporate some combination of the following learning goals into each lesson plan: learning and practicing new techniques, taking creative risks, exploring identity and personal voice, examining modes of cultural expression throughout history; engineering and problem-solving, and group collaboration. I enjoy teaching at Gage for many reasons: Teen Art Studios are FREE to anyone 13-18; youth and teen Alisha Dall’Osto classes last 2-3 hours allowing for in-depth skill-building and complex projects; the supplies are well-stocked and staff is very supportive; and the classrooms at Gage have the ambiance of an art school, which is a haven for any student who doodles and day-dreams all week long.”

Work in small groups to collaborate on a series of large scale two- and three-dimensional works. Focus on the importance of selection, creative decision-making and teamwork. Start with simple writing and drawing exercises, then build large collaborative drawings and sculptures. The focus of these exercises is on the idea of building through taking things apart and large scale group projects.

Use objects and images from the natural world to create illustrations which combine a variety of materials and media. Learn specific types of animal and plant life while adding other components of observational drawing. Use a variety of materials such as watercolor, colored pencil, printmaking, stenciling, and unusual surfaces. Get inspired by other artists to develop your own series of still life and natural history illustration.

MAY

MAY

Focus on drawing the various parts of the figure and capture the depth and volume of a body in space. Learn how to block-in shapes from light to dark, and how to realistically draw the hardest parts of people: hands, feet and faces. Discover how gesture drawings lead to more detailed studies, and look at famous works of art to see how artists have rendered the figure in art history.

Use reduction printmaking, a technique where you cut away the drawn image to create multicolor prints from one piece of linoleum. Learn to reduce your image area for each color by planning a repetitive process for your carving, and how to register your images for the perfect application of all your colors. See your print evolve from one large block of color to a finely drawn graphic image!

JUNE

JUNE

Rip, cut and layer fabrics to build a realistic image. Portray shadow and form with this original collage method. Finished pieces are glued layers of cloth mounted on a board, which can be hung on the wall; portraying a story or image from your own imagination. Make a self-portrait, a desert landscape or a realistic rendering of your own.

Learn the relationship between an object and its representation in art. Examine the role of digital media and popular culture, and the profound effect they have on the information we share. Collect popular images, videos, memes and photos to see what happens when these images get used to create three-dimensional objects. This is a hands-on multimedia class using photos, sculpture, drawing and other objects to create unusual works of art.
