COVER ARTIST: DAVID JON KASSAN Guest Teaching Artist

David Jon Kassan is a contemporary American painter best known for his life-size realist portraits. The paintings combine figurative subjects with abstract backgrounds or tromp l’oeil texture studies. Of this dual-representation strategy Kassan notes, “my effort to constantly learn to document reality with a naturalistic, representational painting technique allows for pieces to be inherent contradictions; paintings that are both real and abstract.” Join David for Portrait Drawing in Pastel Pencil, a weeklong workshop coming in August (see p. 18).

Joel Mangin

Mon-Fri 9:30am-4:30pm 6/16-6/20 [5 days]

The goal of this workshop is to expose students to the enjoyment of using animals in art. Explore how other artists have used animals historically in their work and use a variety of materials in drawing animals from life. In the figurative art world students work from the model, in this workshop the instructor brings taxidermied animals to the classroom to draw from, visits more at the Burke Museum and takes students out to see animals at the zoo. With an emphasis on accurate observation, learn to improve your understanding of the figure by incorporating the use of the skeleton, plaster casts (écorché), and master drawings into life studies. Learn to complete a carefully rendered drawing from the live model, followed by a companion anatomical/ structural drawing in the same pose. Deconstruct the pose from each position, illustrating anatomical landmarks, proportional systems, and structural conventions with the aid of masterworks from the Renaissance through Beaux-Arts. By developing drawings alongside 2-D écorchés, develop a conceptual understanding of the body that may be applied to observational drawing as well as studies from memory and imagination. With the goal of providing fresh ways of working within a challenging and creative studio environment, Laurence confronts your habitual approach to drawing by asking you to question the way you use your body, restricting the way you make your lines, integrating broader imagery and concepts into your approach, while inviting you to rethink your notion of creating “good” pictures. Escape to the outdoors and spend a week painting the great Northwest! Each day begins with a demonstration focusing on the key elements of plein-air painting: choosing a subject, getting started, the block-in, adjusting your values and approaches to painting trees, skies and water. Your headquarters for the week is a large studio in a historic building that includes space for you to prep your materials and paint from indoors, if the weather dictates. Emphasis is placed on strong compositions, simplifying complex forms and eliminating distracting and unnecessary details. WA1418su All $635

Explore life drawing methods to investigate the underlying rhythm, expression and emotion of the modern portrait, using pastel pencil with one pose for the duration so that we may patiently observe and record our findings. All observation is cumulative, and used towards finishing the final work. Instruction includes discussion of practical technical information on pastel pencils, the properties of light on form, and how the topography/depth of the face’s form can be visualized and represented. Most importantly, students learn to transcend the materials so that their full concentration is placed on expressing the model’s presence and emotion. WA1414 All $695

For all of their painterly realism, Solmssen’s works have a geometric layout and sparseness of detail that lends them an abstract quality. As an instructor, he demonstrates methods for developing the pictorial elements in your oil paintings with rich, saturated color, high contrasts, atmospheric depth and a variety of paint surfaces. His sensitivity to composition and light values represents the ideal model for intermediate to advanced landscape painters. Solmssen gives painting demonstrations and works with each student individually. You spend time painting in Seattle’s Volunteer Park, as well as focusing on the city’s beautiful old homes and buildings, and the landscape that surrounds them. WA1417 Int/Adv $660

New students welcome. WA1422f Int/Adv $635 While attending the Boston Normal Art School in the late 19th century, artist and educator Albert H. Munsell (1858-1918) was keenly aware that a practical theory of color did not exist. From his own work and experiments, he devised the Munsell Color System, a practical notation system in which color is defined according to hue, value, and chroma. Munsell’s work was hugely influential in evolving color science theory at the turn of the century, and served as the basis for today’s color matching technology.

Based on the 19th-century model for training painters, this four-year diploma program provides time-tested methods for solving pictorial problems. Fourthyear students work on individual projects with guest mentors. Work from casts, the model and master copies in a series of progressively complex projects. Margaret Davidson

Exhibiting artist and retiring Gage teaching artist Margaret Davidson will lecture on her work in the realm of drawing and on her 20+ years of teaching at Gage. Davidson’s work shows her interest in the interplay between the drawing mark and the surface, and between illusion and reality. Working with those two sets of ideas she draws in the still life genre, and in something she says could be called “abstract realism.” Margaret Davidson holds a BFA from the University of Michigan and an MFA from the University of Washington. She has illustrated various books and journal articles, and is most recently the author of Contemporary Drawing: Key Concepts and Techniques. She is represented by Sisko Gallery in Seattle, Washington, and Anchor Art Space in Anacortes, Washington.

The Next Big Thing* — The Annual Portfolio Intensive Exhibition Artists’ Reception: Friday, August 1  5:00pm-7:00pm Every summer during the five-week Portfolio Intensive Program led by artists Jethaniel Peterka and Ryan Finnerty, teen artists focus on mastering materials and techniques while working from models and still-life. The drawings and paintings in this exhibition demonstrate both the foundational skills and unique artistic expression discovered by each of these young artists. *The Next Big Thing exhibition moves to Seattle’s Vera Project (305 Harrison St, Seattle, WA), September 6 through October 4 2014. Please join us for a reception during the Uptown Art Walk on Wednesday, September 17 from 5:30pm-8:30pm.

Greg Lundgren, as an artist, has chosen the field of death care. What he has found, and what he believes in, is that death is a very natural and important place for an artist to work from and to dwell, and that the industry is in dire need of creative direction and innovation. Death has been stigmatized, and those who work around it are often considered weird or creepy. This lecture explores the need for artists to engage in modern day death practices, and how valuable it is to our personal and cultural history. Greg Lundgren is a Seattle-based artist and curator, and founder of Lundgren Monuments. He continues to design, collaborate and petition for a healthier approach towards our mortality and a broader conversation about art, death and design and is an author of two illustrated children’s books addressing death and the cemetery. He is also the founder of Vital 5 Productions, AFWFA, and Walden 3, and a member of the performance art group PDL.

Gage Atelier instructor Juliette Aristides is “a painter who seeks to understand and convey the human spirit through art.” What does that mean in terms of the way she approaches her work, and the decisions she makes as to what to paint, and how? Juliette discusses how her art has evolved over time, and how she feels about being a “traditional” realist in an era when such art is often ignored or marginalized in the mainstream art world. Included is a discussion of the core values she thinks are most important to convey to her students.
