Explore the practical and theoretical aspects of drawing from observation through rendering both the still-life and figure in black and white media, and learn to draw the face and head from models. Learn to draw the human face with ease and accuracy! For beginning drawing students who find the human face intimidating and frustrating, this course is designed to give the necessary practice and information to navigate facial structures, proportions and light. The first half of the class is strictly short poses, as you sharpen your ability to quickly block-in the basic shapes to capture the likeness of the sitter. The duration of the poses lengthen in the final weeks, giving time to render light and shadow, and develop higher contrast in your drawings. Instruction includes discussion about charcoal materials, drawing demonstrations, practical methods for capturing the form of important facial features, as well as developing a clear focus and concept for each drawing. This introductory class offers a guided and safe approach in which you learn to see more accurately with the keys to drawing: angles, measuring and proportion, negative space, gesture and value. Learn the foundation of classical figure drawing through the practice of the short pose. Drawing can be used as a tool for inquiry into potential projects in other media, or as a means unto itself. The building blocks of abstraction are line, form, color, value and surface. The subject of the drawing could be the process of its making or the materialization of a vision, or fall somewhere in between process and vision. Explore the many possibilities open to an artist in the creation of works on paper in various wet and dry material. Improve your ability to perceive color and to express your vision in your paintings as you learn to accurately observe color relationships, and to mix equivalent analogies with oil paint. As you work from still-life set-ups, interior space and the life model, you build on your understanding of color as value, temperature and intensity. Extend your painting arsenal to encompass and incorporate non-traditional media and techniques. Discover a variety of non-conventional means and materials to create a work that goes beyond the traditional parameters of painting, while still adhering to principles that pertain to all works of art. Explore different approaches to abstract art including spontaneous gestural painting, color-field simplification, drip painting and collage. Innovative approaches to combining different materials as varied as mastics and adhesives to acrylic, oil and wax are also explored. How do non-representational painters create their compositions? Continue to investigate the language of abstraction through examples and methods used by 20th- and 21st-century artists using oil or acrylic paint. Topics include pure mark-making, repetition and structure, and color as content.
Develop an understanding of transparent watercolor that allows you to make conscious choices regarding color, value, wetness and composition, before the brush ever touches the paper. You focus on awareness skills as well as technical skills, since knowing what to do is at least as important as knowing how.

Degas’ use of a soft focus, blurred edges and varied textures are explored and developed in one painting. This workshop approaches using color as a critical instrument of thought in contemporary painting. Color is considered as a means of producing form, as we explore a format (the variants) developed and used by Josef Albers to consider space, color, light and form. Closely consider various approaches to mixing a variety of hues, and developing sequences of color which produce phenomena of light, space and form. Activities involve color mixing expeditions, group discussions involving such queries, readings and discussions of essays from Relational Aesthetics by Nicolas Bourriaud, and the application of the color studies into the variants format adopted from Albers, producing color forms for consideration and discussion.
Begin with a small charcoal on toned paper, simplified in basic tonal shapes to understand how to organize a composition based on choreographing light. The concepts of understanding how to break up a pictorial space into interlocking shapes, movement and rhythm are explored here as an introduction. Using the sight size method, the emphasis is on painting an, “optical impression” that is also optically the same size as the subject. Your painting begins as a unified mass of shadow shape and background atmosphere, which also serves to block-in the drawing. As the forms emerge into the light, they achieve clarity through color, tone and edge quality. Enjoy lots of opportunity to learn how to mix colors, achieve appropriate textural quality such as glass, metal, organic fruits, drapery, etc., and how to create a sense of space.

Notan is a Japanese word that means “darklight harmony,” and expresses this most elemental aspect of a composition through a type of study that uses only two values. Working first from master works, then photographs, and finally from life (still-lifes) in painting, drawing and collage exercises, you learn to identify the dark-light composition and, most importantly to, “think in notan” — to make better choices in the formative stages of your work so as to bring greater order and power to your compositions. Note: This is not a class that teaches Asian-style painting; rather, it explores a universal principle that is applicable to all types of painting and drawing.
Discover the role pattern can play to create interest in your collage work. Explore positive and negative space, shape, contrast, rhythm and variety as you compose numerous collages. The Aristides Atelier, based on time-tested studio traditions, offers the opportunity to study classical drawing and painting techniques with master artist Juliette Aristides. Information is presented in a variety of formats intended to enable students of all levels to grasp even the most difficult concepts. You graduate with an unparalleled understanding of the principles of art. The Aristides Atelier curriculum is designed to provide fundamental drawing and painting skills with a strong emphasis on observation from life. Like the great studios of the past, working from the human figure in life drawing and painting forms a pillar of our program.
The Kang-O’Higgins Atelier emphasizes drafting and painting skills to empower you with the language you need to achieve full visual expression. Led by Mark Kang-O’Higgins, this course cultivates fluency with anatomical and technical knowledge, but also goes far beyond technique. You are encouraged to find your own forms of expression as you build familiarity with many different approaches to the figure embodied in historical and contemporary drawing and painting techniques. To this end, you engage in exercises that explore tonal relationships, light, measurement, figure structure and anatomy, and are expected to have a solid understanding of these issues in order to progress.
The Faigin Atelier works with a small group of painting students interested in focusing their studio practice on the study of still-life arrangements over the course of a year. Atelier instructor and Gage co-founder Gary Faigin uses still-life as a vehicle to teach the basics of representation, including value, drawing and perspective, as well as paint-specific techniques like glazing, impasto and control of edges. For more advanced students, studio still-life is a time-honored subject with unlimited potential. No other subject matter offers the artist quite as much control over every aspect of their pictorial effect, and none has as rich and interesting a history.

PERFORMANCES WAYNE BUND: SASS MANIFESTO April 24

In Sass Manifesto, Bund uses an arsenal of characters from Pan, the Greek god of lust, to Feyoncé, a queer appropriation of the pop diva Beyoncé, to illuminate the thin line between the self and the other. This performance is a high-energy tour-de-force of pop culture, radical feminism and queer theory. Part Tina Turner-Proud Mary, part Judith Butler-Gender Trouble, Bund’s drag persona Feyoncé tackles self-doubt, optimism and feminist lineage. Sass questions originality and the anxiety of influence an artist endures during the creative process, and asks the audience to witness the interior monologue of an artist dealing with ethics and morals around feminism and drag.

Explore the creation of stories of social change and personal empowerment through physical theater and group collaboration. Participate in a variety of activities, culminating in a small informal presentation to the group. Having recently moved to Cambodia, Lauren Iida’s intricate paper cutaways help her process and preserve her experiences with the people and landscape of the country. As spring is emerging from winter we begin to look out-of-doors for new inspiration. Landscape painters’ subject matter is varied from urban to rural, from one tree to an entire meadow. Using lessons in perspective, light/shadow, color and seeing the character of natural and built forms, Gage students showcase their best landscape work.
Drawing is the beginning of things; the first communication. It can be deceptively simple, just paper and a marking tool. It can feel fragile. The catalysts for the predominately geometric work of Gage teaching artist Michael Ottersen are narratives, archetypes and contradictions. It is the relationships, connotations and tension between the forms that lead to potential narratives about experience, geography and history. Ottersen prefers that the information in his work is time released, providing the viewer with a slow read of initially simple scenarios in a complicated process.

Join Portland-based interdisciplinary artist Wayne Bund for a showing of his work in Seattle as a three-part extravaganza. During the run of the exhibition, Bund performs the choreographed dance-drag-theater piece Sass Manifesto as a full-length work. Bund then teaches a one-day movement-based workshop around queer identity, entitled Queering Fantasy. Idle and Blessed, Sass Manifesto and Queering Fantasy are made possible in part by a WESTAF Tour West Grant.

Ceramic artist Akio Takamori has created a unique body of work – a world of characters that blend Eastern and Western traditions, and express a wide variety of psychological states. He has also done parallel work in photography and drawing, not to mention being a master craftsman. Join us as we talk to Akio about how he sees his appealing clay humanoids: are they self-portraits, people he knows, or universal types?
In her ongoing series Watershed*, Olympic Peninsula artist Karen Hackenberg presents a light-hearted yet subversive approach to the serious subject of ocean degradation; a tongue-in-cheek taxonomy of the new post-consumer creatures of the sea. Painting traditionally with oil and gouache, she lovingly and meticulously crafts beautiful images of conventionally ugly beach cast-offs, creating a provocative juxtaposition of form and idea.

The sculptural forms of Mark Calderon are bold and simple. However, the ideas that underlie their appearance are anything but. Calderon draws on art history, historical religious imagery, as well as personal experience and ecology as sources of inspiration. The final results are refined, often enigmatic sculptures that only reveal their complicated pedigree with time, but can also be enjoyed simply as beautiful objects. Join us as we explore his creative process, and how all those complicated threads get formed into one decisive result.

Karen Hackenberg first developed her connection to the natural world in the pastures, orchards, wooded hills and beaches along Long Island Sound in rural Connecticut. She earned her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design before migrating west to San Francisco. Her work appears in many private and permanent public collections, including the New York State Museum, Providence Medical Center and the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.

PARKING Free parking is available weekdays along the south wall of the St. Nicholas building and beside St. Mark’s Cathedral. For evening and weekend programs, students are invited to park behind the St. Nicholas building, as well. TRANSPORTATION Gage is located east of I-5, south of 520 and four blocks north of Broadway on Capitol Hill. For public transportation, take Metro bus line 49. Gage does not allow the use of Liquin or any other highly toxic mediums in the studios. Gage Youth Programs include all art supplies. SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES In May of each year, students may apply for full- and partial- need– based tuition scholarships to youth and adult students on a reserved and space-available basis. In addition, Gage offers more substantial need- and merit-based adult scholarships annually with applications due each July. Scholarships are available for summer youth programs based on need. Applications for Summer Youth Scholarships are due May 27th, 2015. Gage accepts Visa, Mastercard and American Express as well as checks or cash. NOTE: There is a $10 nonrefundable registration fee for each class and/or workshop booked. Registration fee is waived for ateliers, lecture series and open studio passes.

CANCELLATION
Students who wish to cancel their place in a program must notify the Gage office by Gage welcomes artists of all abilities to attend the myriad programs available through the school. In addition, Gage offers the followings tuition discounts for all telephone or email to qualify for tuition refund or tuition credit. Tuition credits must be applied toward Gage programs within one year. All tuition credits are nontransferable. See Atelier and of our adult classes and workshops: (Only one discount type per registration.) Student contract for cancellation terms. 10% discount for adult students 25 years old and younger 10% discount for new adult students for their first class or workshop 50% discount for K–12 only/Public schools only. Must offer proof showing current art teacher and a letter from Principal (stand-by basis only)

Submission of your registration constitutes acceptance of all terms and conditions stated in this catalog and agreement that Gage Academy of Art (Gage) cannot be held responsible or liable for any act or for any injury, illness, death, damage, loss, accident, delay or irregularity which may occur during the course of any program. Gage assumes no responsibility for losses or additional expenses due to influences beyond its control. Personal effects, artwork and art supplies are students’ sole responsibility at all times. Gage reserves the right to cancel any program in which case it is liable only for any fees paid to Gage Academy of Art. Gage reserves the right to reschedule any program or replace any instructor without refund. Gage reserves the unconditional right to terminate enrollment in the event of unreasonable or disruptive conduct or failing to follow Gage’s student policies and rules; and Gage may do so without any refund. No refund will be made for early departure or deviation from the Gage schedule and program registration shall be nontransferable. Publicity waiver: Unless informed otherwise, Gage considers photographs and videotaken of students and their artwork to be permissible for publication in Gage informational materials, including the web.
