Did you know that our Snow Plow drivers have about 235 lane miles to plow?
The city of Gallup crews will begin to clear snow from priority 1 roads first. Priority1 roads include those around schools, main arteries, hospital routes and hills. Priorities (2 – 4) will follow suit once the priority 1 roads are cleared. The city tries to have all roads cleared within 10 hours, unless the storm is prolonged. Then, priority roads take precedence and other streets (cul-de- sacs and dead-end streets) will be cleared when conditions allow. The first pass of the plow is to open the roads then crews will go back and push the snow back to the curb. Salting starts when one inch of snow build up is present on the street or, in areas with steep streets, just before a major storm arrives. Salt is generally applied only on hills and at intersections. Snow plowing starts when two or more inches of snow accumulate on streets.
Residents can help snow removal operations and themselves by using the following information:
1. Park all vehicles, trailers, and boats off street until the snow is removed. Ridges of snow around vehicles parked on streets will freeze and prevent or slow down future snow removal and may cause accidents when any vehicle hits them.
2. Clear snow from sidewalks as soon as possible, but no later than 48 hours after snow has ceased to fall. This will prevent the snow from turning into an icy hazard for pedestrians and may force them to walk in the street.
3. When using snow blowers, aim into the front yard away from sidewalks and the street. Ice and rocks, as well as powder snow are blown out many feet. This material can hit a parked or passing car, causing damage to those vehicles and increase the chance of an accident. Also, snow blown onto the street will freeze and become a slick spot, which creates another hazard.
4. Push or shovel snow from your driveways, onto the area between your sidewalk and curb, but not into the street. This will prevent the snow pile from freezing and becoming hidden by new snow. If a snowplow hits a pile of ice, the snowplows are shoved back into the traffic lanes and can easily hit a passing or parked car.
5. Give salt spreaders and snowplow equipment plenty of room while in operation. Please do not follow too closely, as equipment could slide sideways or backwards at any time. This will prevent potential accidents and avoid a cracked windshield from cinders or salt.
6. Drive cautiously and defensively. Salt trucks will generally only be used on hills and intersections. Other areas will remain icy. SLOW DOWN! DO NOT FOLLOW TOO CLOSELY!
7. Streets that have speed humps will not be plowed, slated or cindered. This is due to speed humps causing damage to the spreader on the snowplows.
8. If snow or ice control problems are seen by residents, you are encouraged to call the Public Works office at (505) 863-1290.

Seems like four years is an important amount of time. It is how long we give our elected officials an opportunity to do the things they promised, or we vote for someone new. Sports dynasties are made in this span and can fall apart in a much shorter period. In our area it is the cycle when our pinon trees produce those amazing nuts, especially when we add salt and roast them. We eagerly await the Summer and Winter Olympics every four years to cheer on our country men and women. How about a college degree, that is a four-year endeavor? Right now, 32 countries are playing in the FIFA World Cup to win bragging rights as the best in the world. Amazing things can happen in four years.
Elected officials, athletes, college students, trees, and human beings will all face adversity. The challenges to accomplish your goals could come daily. Politicians face upset constituents who want them to make the community better, highperformance athletes must work out daily and
follow strict nutrition plans, students spend hours studying to learn their subjects, and trees depend on a climate that brings the appropriate amount of moisture without extreme temperature change. It is an intangible that will carry us through to our goals.
December is the month when we do lots of reflecting and start thinking about the things we want to change in the upcoming new year. If you want your elected officials to improve your community, get involved, want to be healthier you need to get your body moving and watching what you eat, want our trees to continue to grow, do things that help the environment.
If you are working on attaining a specialized skill or college degree spend your evenings in the books and not the bars. Also, don’t make it a one-year goal, make it a fouryear goal. Give your life changes a chance and most importantly be consistent.

Navajo language, government professor Joe Kee performs traditional ceremony to bless re-catalogued collection of books
By Richard ReyesGALLUP, N.M. — Wearing a headband, bowguard, turquoise necklace and moccasins, Joe Kee blessed the new Native American Studies section at the Zollinger Library on The University of New Mexico-Gallup campus Wednesday, Nov. 2.
Kee is an associate professor of Navajo language and Navajo government at UNM-Gallup. He performed a Blessingway Ceremony with a Navajo wedding basket, arrowhead, blanket, corn pollen and water while speaking Diné bizaad to acknowledge and honor the many Indigenous peoples in this country and on this continent, including those from the Navajo, Zuni, Laguna, Hopi and Apache nations who live in this region.
“The purpose for this blessing is really in acknowledging the existence of a new Native American Studies section inside the Zollinger Library that will house hundreds of books where Indigenous students and students of all backgrounds can come in and learn about the people,” Kee said. “Its purpose is to offer appreciation and make sure the folks involved — past present and future of UNM-Gallup faculty, staff and students — will continue to build a connection to this place and that learning and knowledge will continue to grow.”
Kee said he came from a traditional Navajo upbringing, so he learned to conduct such blessings from the elders and medicine people in his family. At one point in his life, he recognized the responsibility had been vested in him to carry on their teachings.
The dedication ceremony Wednesday was the library’s official introduction to the newly organized collection of books on Indigenous history, art, anthropology, science and more.
Zollinger Library Director Markos Chavez said that when he came to work for UNM-Gallup at the end of February, he asked the staff for ideas. Research librarian Jim Fisk mentioned that he always wanted to have a Native American Studies section at the library, and Chavez wholeheartedly agreed it was needed.
Chavez then consulted with library info specialist Yolanda Chavez to see if the plan was feasible or “a dream for another time.”
They decided to move forward with the idea and got to work pulling Native American books from separate sections all over the library and re-cataloguing them for the new section.
The library staff finalized the new Native American Studies section in August, but they decided to wait until National Native American Heritage Month in November to officially unveil the collection.
“My big dream now is to use this as a beacon to bring people here and have them come into the library and make use of this section and find the materials they need, honor the culture and learn the history,” Markos Chavez said.
Fisk and Markos Chavez added that Kee was supportive of the idea
from the beginning and helped to identify some must-have titles for the collection early on.
Kee said he supported the project because it was important to him that UNM-Gallup be a place where Native American students could have a place for learning and knowledge.
“We are a young population,” Kee said. “We’re losing quite a bit of the language and the cultural and traditional teachings due to the communication gap that may exist between the older generation and the younger generation. As a young nation, it’s important to just become a force in moving the nation forward, and the only way that can happen is in pursuing a formal education while at the same time maintaining our connection to the cultural aspect of who we are as a person.”
He noted that many elders tell young people, “T’11 H0 !j7t’4ego,” which means, “It is entirely up to you succeed.”
“That goes back to our elders who were incarcerated at Fort Sumner,” Kee said. “That’s where one of the great Navajo leaders, Chief Manuelito, said ‘Education is a ladder. Continue to climb this ladder.’ He foresaw that years down the road for his people, in order to be successful, that our children take to learn as much as they can in the formal education system while at the same time maintaining ties to their cultural groups.”
Fisk noted that the Zollinger Library is open to the general public — not just the students, staff and faculty of UNM-Gallup. Community

delicate butterflies are so easily recognized. Each one is created so specially in their own way.
Sara still lives in the middle
By Kenneth MaxymowichAt this time of year Zuni is a very special place to be! Driving through the Pueblo you can see people cleaning their yards for the upcoming Shalako. This week especially, women are cooking for the men working in the Shalako homes. Smoke is in the air as outdoor ovens are stoked and being used daily.
The middle village is especially busy as Thanksgiving is just days before Shalako this year. For the fourth year in a row Shalako will be closed to
outsiders. Speaking of the middle village, there is so much Zuni art still being created here today. Carvings, pottery, beadwork, kachina
I saw one many years ago now. Her incredibly colorful and
village just steps away from where she was raised as a little girl. Growing up in Zuni, Sara was raised by her parents the late Theodore Edaakie Sr. and the late Margaret Edaakie. Both of her parents created jewelry together. When not making jewelry with her husband, Margaret Edaakie
worked on her beadwork creating dolls, pendants and pin cushions.
Margaret was a patient woman, loving all her children and great grandchildren.
Margaret was a foster Grandparent for the schools in Zuni where she donated her time volunteering to help in the classrooms.
Sara’s father Theodore Edaakie is so very well known for his incredible inlaid jewelry. Growing up, Sara says her father was always a patient man. He would never be angry with his children. If one would make a mistake, he would gather the family together and lecture them as a whole and he would preach to them about the traditional ways and share his knowledge of his upbringing.
Growing up in Zuni, Sara tells me “Everyone in the village believed in our traditional ways and we were all brought up with our religious practices.” Sara says growing up with her father was always busy as he was a councilman for the Pueblo of Zuni serving
8 years in that position. He also became Lt. Governor for the Pueblo of Zuni where he served 4 years in that position alongside Governor Robert Lewis.
It was Sara’s Father and Mother that taught her how to do her silverwork and inlay when she was near 19 years old. The butterfly design and pattern that Sara is famous for today comes from her father. She says her dad designed the pattern and she just took over. Throughout her life, Sara created her stunningly beautiful butterflies on her own. She did everything from the silverwork to cutting and inlaying all the stone and shell.
Sara signs each creation with a sharp pointing needle.
Sara says she started making jewelry so she could have her own spending money for herself and her family. She says it was wonderful learning how to make jewelry. When she was finished making her pieces, she would go into Gallup to sell. It was exciting to sell and then go shopping. If there was extra, playing bingo was always on the agenda! At those times, bingo was played at the St.
Anthony School or in Gallup. She also loved to garden in her spare time to get away from her worktable. Now her favorite pass time is spending time with her Grandchildren and her Great Grandchildren. When Sara was about 28 years old, she adopted her niece, Tara Edaakie. Now she boasts a large loving family of 4 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren.
Sara says all her sisters make jewelry. Their parents taught all their children to make jewelry. All her sisters still make jewelry to this day! They consider their work to be silver colored pendants. Besides Sara’s parents and siblings, there are many other family members known for their art. Sara tells me about her niece Emma Edaakie, her niece Andrea Lonjose, her great niece Tamara Pinto, her sister Caroline Edaakie and Caroline’s sons Angus Ahiyite, Lyndon Ahiyite, and Leavus Ahiyite. She goes on to mention her sister Deanne Edaakie, Judy Quandelacy and her Father’s family consisting of Anthony and Rita Edaakie, Raylan and Pattie Edaakie and Lee Edaakie.
Zuni jewelry collectors are very fortunate if they have any of Sara Edaakie’s pieces in their collections. Her butterflies grace many galleries today and her art can be seen at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. Sara wants to thank everyone that has supported her and those that have bought her jewelry. I believe it is us that should be thankful and blessed to have such a creative Lady in our midst. Her beautiful jewelry will be cherished and enjoyed for generations to come. It brings me great joy to have met Sara and I know I will always smile when I see one of her beautiful butterflies grace our presence.

AAs a young Navajo kid, I looked forward to the first snow fall every year. The first snow signified the start of Winter and with that came the traditional coyote stories, the string games, and the Shoe Game. At school, we would watch the short cartoons of the coyote stories which were narrated and voiced in Navajo. At the time, I watched these animations for its entertainment value and learned not
to be like Coyote. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I started to see the significance of these animations and what role it has in preserving part of the Navajo culture.
Since the Navajos use storytelling as the way of passing down their tradition and culture, many of these coyote and origin stories have variations. The emergence stories are told during the Winter, not because of the practicality of more time for storytelling in the
evenings, but because some animals are in hibernation. Therefore, these stories, like the string games and the Shoe Game, are done only during the hibernation months and are considered taboo any other part of the year.
The coyote plays a significant, complicated role in the Navajo culture, so much so that, if you make a careless mistake or do something stupid, you may be referred to as a “Ma’ii” (coyote). Coyote is both powerful and
mischievous, kind of like Loki from the Norse mythology, and the coyote is in the Navajo emergence and origin story from the very beginning. Coyote was the only animal, besides the insects, present in the First World alongside First Man and First Woman. Coyote then emerged to the Second World and Third World. It is in the Third World that Coyote becomes the main character and, some will say, it is the reason why the Fourth World was necessary. As a group, including First Man and Woman, that emerged into the Third (Yellow) World, they saw a beautiful place they could finally call home. Coyote was busy making friends with all the animals of this world, the daytime and nighttime animals—and wherever Coyote goes, something is sure to go awry. Soon the daytime animals were arguing with the nocturnal animals about whether there should be daylight most of the time or night most of the time. Coyote suggested they play a game, the daytime animals versus the nocturnal animals. The game was set to start at sunset and end at sunrise the next morning, and the team with the most points will win. Each team placed four boots in the ground, nearly burying them completely, used a small chunk of yucca root, made over a hundred yucca leaves, and found a solid stick. Each team took turns to hide the yucca root and guessing where to find the root by hitting the boot with the stick. The yucca leaves kept count of the points. By morning, however, there was no winner and all the animals decided to share day and night time throughout the year. And in this way the cycle of a complete day was created.
There are few origin stories about the creation of day and night, so it important to pass down these stories that have cosmological significance. Even Ancient Greek mythologies do not have a specific story on how day and night came to be. Nyx was the primordial goddess of night and the mother of Hemera, the goddess of day and who was “made” using the dimmest parts of darkness and dawn. There is no interesting Greek
mythological story about how day and night came to exist, like how Hades’ and Demeter’s time with Persephone determines the seasons of the year. Since it is Winter, Greeks know that Persephone is currently with her husband Hades in the Underworld.
Later in the Third World, Coyote, for no reason but being who he is, stole Water Monster’s baby. In his anger, Water Monster caused a great flood, and all the habitants of the Third World were forced to escape by climbing a tree branch that grew to the top of the Third World. Coyote finally returned the baby just before he emerged into the last and Fourth World. This is where we are today.
Coyote’s role in Navajo stories is essential to understanding our culture and to stress the importance of living in Hozho (harmony). These stories are entertaining and have life lessons, but they also remind us that we share this world with animals and nature. Our Hozho depends on respecting nature and one another, even the ma’ii. Coyote is the personification for many bad character traits, like untrustworthy, greedy, malicious, disruptive, foolishness, and deceit, but he is the one animal that is ever-present in the Navajo emergence story. If anything, Coyote teaches us tolerance and acceptance.
I wonder if elementary schools still show those old videos about Coyote and his animal friends. Several videos can be viewed on YouTube in its original animation. The San Juan Indian Education Center in Blanding, Utah is to be commended for making these films, perhaps realizing the need in preserving these stories back in the 1060s. I try to make it an annual habit to watch these videos every Winter because they are fun and entertaining, hearing the characters speak Navajo is particularly special. I am also reminded to not be diigis or to behave like a ma’ii—it wouldn’t hurt to have a yearly reminder to be kind and respectful of this world.

Instead of saying, I will exercise more, spend less and eat healthier. Try to set one goal at a time. Is it realistic to say, “I will read 2 books a week?” Do you really have the time to do that? Maybe set a goal of 1 book a month.
If you plan on exercising more, why not set a specific goal. I plan to exercise for at least 30 minutes, 3 to 4 days out of the week. Don’t stress yourself out by shooting to exercise every day of the week. Start small and then gradually increase the amount every week.
Writing down your goals helps you to visualize what you are trying to achieve.
Scribble down your goals where you can see them each day. Place them on the mirror or on the fridge. Writing your goals down is a great reminder of what you are reaching for. It helps you to be more accountable and in the long-run successful in what you are reaching for.
There are many resources out there that can help you reach specific goals. Movement apps, an app for increasing your water intake, breathing exercises, saving money tips. You name it, there is going to be an app for you to download on your smart phone. Take advantage and find one today that will help with your specific goal.
As you move forward towards your goals, remember to celebrate the small changes that have occurred. Maybe you had the goal of drinking less soda. You may have recently cut-back your soda intake to one a week. This is a small step that should be awarded. Go get your nails done, see a movie, buy your favorite book. Keep moving in the direction you would like to move in and reach that goal of no sodas and more water.

Mr. and Mrs. Abenicio Chacon were dressed to a tea on November 11, 2008. They boarded a freshly washed white van that was to transport them on the parade route that began on West Aztec and threaded through downtown Gallup, New Mexico.
Mr. Chacon had been chosen by the Veterans Committee members to be the focal point of the Veterans Day celebration on that beautiful clear November day. The sky was an azure blue, of which only the southwestern United States can produce, and he had been declared a true-blue American hero by the American Legion Post No. 8.
The celebration culminated at the Veterans Park in front of the McKinley County Court House where his name had been enshrined in one of the huge pillars that epitomize our nation’s ideals. The Grants U.S.M.C., Junior R.O.T.C. posted the colors with precise Military precision.
Mr. and Mrs. Chacon sat in quiet dignity while Dave Dellago, Jr., one of the McKinley County Commissioners, related that he had been to Tinian Island on vacation a few years previous.
The Construction Battalions (Seabees) built the largest airport in the world during Mr. Chacon’s tour of duty there in 1944. Mr. Dellago described the 39 square mile island as largely overgrown with thick tropical jungle, but parts of the 20-mile-long air strip are still intact. Mr. Chacon remembers that parts of the air strip consisted of 2” thick iron plates. The nearly one thousand B-29 Super Fortress bombers were extremely heavy and needed a very long, solid strip from which to fly their bombing missions on Japan. These missions were very long because Tokyo is about 1500 miles southeast of Tinian. Day missions bombed war factories, night missions fire bombed Tokyo and other cities with Napalm.
Both B-29 bombers that dropped atomic bombs on two Japanese cities were launched from Tinian.
On August 6, 1945, a United States Army plane called the Enola Gay dropped a single atomic bomb on the center of Hiroshima. Three days later another B-29 called Bock’s Car dropped another atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki effectively breaking the back of the Japanese military and effecting their surrender to the allies on September 2, 1945, in Tokyo Bay aboard the battleship U.S.S. Missouri.
Tinian is part of the Mariana group of fifteen small islands in the western Pacific Ocean. The interior is flat, and that is why it was so desirable to the Allied forces fighting their way to mainland Japan and the overthrow of Emperor Hirohito’s imperial empire.
The Spanish who discovered the island in 1521, and used it as a game preserve, would not have imagined the slaughter that occurred when the United States Seabees and Marines came ashore during the bloody beach landings. Over 9000 crack Japanese soldiers and sailors were killed in vicious fighting.
The Seabees were instrumental in these dangerous landings. They cleared land mines, built temporary docks, and later on Tinian would dig mass graves to bury the great multitudes of dead Japanese before they spread communicable diseases.
The Construction Battalions were often ahead of even the Marines on these perilous operations when Mr. Chacon was assigned to Island X, as Tinian was known to them, it was one of the most dangerous places on earth. It was infested with fanatical snipers that would pop up out of nowhere and kill as many of our troops as possible before either committing Hari-kiri or being shot or burned to death with flame throwers. Under the Bushido Code, life meant nothing to them.
Mr. Chacon relates that the Seabees main job was building and maintaining the air strip. They were also multifaceted in all aspects of construction including building, wiring, and plumbing structures of all sorts. They were also cooks and did K.P. duty. In other words, the other Service branches could not possibly function without them.
About 5 o’clock every evening the Japanese Air Force would drop in for dinner. They would serve up Napalm and machine gun bullets by the score, sending our troops diving for their fox holes and anti-aircraft guns, while the Air Force conducted deadly dog fights with enemy Zero fighters overhead. The main attacks were in the evening, but is was a frontline assignment that saw combat 24 hrs/day.
Stealthy Japanese submarines were a constant threat to ships like the Indianapolis, which delivered the first atomic bomb to Tinian. On its return trip there was a miscommunication as to the time it was expected to reach its home port. The ship was following all appropriate evasive maneuvers.
A Japanese submarine had been tracking them and sunk the Indianapolis at night in a matter of minutes killing and wounding many, leaving hundreds of oil-soaked men abandoned in shark infested waters for six long days and nights. Many fell prey to

dehydration and the hungry denizens of the deep.
The emaciated men were finally rescued from certain death when a Navy seaplane spotted them, as dramatically portrayed in the cabin scene in the movie “Jaws,” when Captain T.S. Quint was relating to his two shipmates the memory of the violent sinking of the Indianapolis in 1944. The Japanese characteristic fanaticism and single-minded duty to their emperor was further intensified because each soldier and airman knew that Tinian was their last sustainable stand—it was make or break for themselves, their families and their imperialistic way of life. Centuries of warfare and absolute complete dedication to their demigod emperors had produced a finely honed army ant. They would gladly sacrifice themselves and their families for the defense of the god-like emperor.
Before World War I, Japanese scientists had discovered methamphetamine which would later prove to be one of the worst scourges ever unleased on mankind. The sake that kamikaze pilots drank before they took off on their one-way suicide missions was laced with methamphetamine. They had enough fuel in their explosive laden Zero fighters and bombers to reach their targets. Returning to their Nipponese home territory was physically impossible, coupled with the centuries of brainwashing and a last methamphetamine-laced cocktail spelled hell on earth for Mr. Chacon and all of his hard fighting fellow soldiers.
At this point in the war the Japanese had capitalized on the jet fighter technology of their German Axis Allies. They emulated the German Zoner Ramming Campaign against allied bombers by Stutka fighters and the recently invented jet fighters. The Japanese Divine thunder God Corp used jet fighters with iron reinforced nose cones to penetrate the hulls of allied battleships.
The methamphetamine crazed pilot was strapped into the jet fighter which was attached to the bottom of a bomber. At the precise moment, the jet was released and at “mach” speed would plunge into the hull of an American ship at water level for maximum damage. It was nearly impossible for our gunners to shoot the jets down because of the “supersonic” speed at which these missiles of death rammed into the ships. It was kill or be killed. The slaughter would have continued into the millions if the planned landing would have been carried out into mainland Japan. The fanaticism, if imaginable, would have been stepped up even more and our troops would have faced an even more determined foe.
Our scientists, engineers, both Presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Truman, coupled with our troops like the Seabees, stopped these mad dogs in their tracks with the dropping of the two atomic bombs. Mr. Chacon relates that when the Japanese surrender was announced
on Tinian all the ships around the war-torn island blew their horns. Absolute delirious pandemonium broke out! They were going home from the Hades they had survived. An uninitiated person could not imagine the pure joy they felt. They were alive and headed back to chile y frijoles and the good old U.S. of A!
Alfred Forkel was a German prisoner of war that my dad Thomas S. Marquez helped guard in Las Animas, Colorado, during the war. Alfred was to be released in France in early 1945 after the German surrender in Europe. The German POWs were transported by train to the port in San Francisco. After his release, in a letter to my parents, Alfred described the port city as “Bella como una fabula” which translates to “beautiful as a fable.”
Hundreds of American troops were crowded into transport ships headed for Hawaii. Mr. Chacon would earn the mandatory 15 points for service time there, then he would be transported on the U.S.S. Saratoga to San Francisco. His description of the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco where he was honorably discharged was similar to Alfred Forkel’s impression. The difference being they had been triumphantly victorious and were welcomed with open arms by the citizens of the United States of America. Mr. Chacon had won the Bronze Star Medal; however, there were no parades, and everyone was just happy that the long nightmare was over.
A train headed for Texas dropped Mr. Chacon off in Belen. The welcome there was even more sedate. There was no welcome home party and no one he knew was around. A visit to one of the local pubs proved to be more interesting. No one knew how the fight started but everyone knew how it ended, with the Seabees victorious again!
Jobs were scarce. A few of the things Mr. Chacon did to earn a living were working at disassembling war planes in Kingman, Arizona. Possibly, ironically, there may have been planes that were on Tinian Island. He worked with a man named Shorty Martinez, in Gallup, that manufactured all manner of tools, bolts, and nuts. Also, he was a hotshot firefighter out of the Grants base. Through the G.I. Bill he was able to learn to make furniture, which he used in his future house in Gallup.
He was living with his older brother Joe who had served in the Navy and his wife Leonor on the north side of Gallup. He was working as a dishwasher at the Fred Harvey Hotel for $0.75/hour. A friend of his told him of a dock job in San Diego, but he opted for a job as a security guard at the Fort Wingate Army Depot.
The stage was set. The beautiful Beatrice Candelaria attended a dance at the Knights of Columbus Hall, escorted by her older sister Dora. This was the magic moment for the soon to be Mr. and Mrs. Abenicio Chacon, he was able to steal one dance from her, then she was whisked away like Cinderella to Sunny Side and Sunny Dale, Utah, with Dora
to visit her Aunt Beatrice and her husband Manuel Rivas.
A person had to work very hard back then. Beatrice got a job as a cook and dishwasher at a boarding house run by a real nice older couple. Her tasks included washing out lunch buckets and fixing sandwiches for the miners. After a few months she returned to Gallup where she attended St. Mary’s Catholic School from 1st to 3rd grade, then she attended public school to the 7th grade. She returned to Catholic school in 8th grade.
However, her family’s financial situation forced her to gradually quit school. She helped support the family by working in a restaurant on Main Street run by some Mexican people. Later she got on as a dishwasher at Gordo’s Restaurant where a friend of hers, Lola Diaz worked.
Mr. Chacon tried his best to track down the apple of his eye by going on safari to Chihuahuita. He learned from a local man named Manuel Sanchez, where she lived. Mrs. Chacon’s family raised rabbits, and she was very good at preparing delicious rabbit dishes. Mr. Chacon was at Senor Fidel and Senora Julianita’s house so often that Fidel, her dad, was finally prompted to ask him, “Cuando te vas a casar con ella?”
Mr. Chacon popped the question, and they became Mr. and Mrs. Abenicio Chacon. They were married in the Cathedral Church in 1951. The church was located where the west Lowe’s store stands today. It was a small wedding, and her dress was purchased by Mr. Chacon for $50 with his first paycheck from Fort Wingate. Their Padrinos were Tia Pilar and her husband Salomon Diaz, also Emilio and Bennie Serna.
They set up a household in a tworoom house on Seventh and Green streets on the south side of Gallup. Coal was their heating fuel, so little Virgie, their first child, would have her little faced stained by the perpetual coal dust. Life was very difficult, and everyone worked very hard all the time. The family bought an old adobe house at 703 West Mesa. The house had a very long porch in the front and had been built with a sunken floor, so it was susceptible to the frequent flooding in Gallup. The inventive Mrs. Chacon
used a wet gunny sack hung in an open window shaded by trees as an improvised refrigerator.
Eventually they ordered a pre-built house shell from Albuquerque. Mrs. Chacon remembers she had fallen sick and was in the hospital when the house was delivered a low-boy semi-trailer. Mr. and Mrs. Chacon and young Virgie would work in the morning and evenings at finishing the interior of the house. The other children were very young and helped as much as they could.
Virginia had been born in 1952. The household grew to include Ramona in 1953, Linda in 1955, Fidel in 1957, Helen in 1959, Abenicio, Jr., in 1962, and my wife and soul-mate MaryAnn in 1964. There were also two miscarriages, one between Linda and Fidel and one after MaryAnn. Fidel passed away and is now playing his guitar for God in his home in heaven.
The house was filled with joy and the furniture Mr. Chacon had made and stored in his hometown of Belen. As children filled the house, two east rooms were added, and the house became more accommodating and spacious.
There were many challenges along the way, including health problems such as Fidel’s brain tumor, Mrs. Chacon’s stomach operations, Mr. Chacon’s many painful operations and the optic nerve tumors that Michelle, a granddaughter that lived with them, developed at age 5. The tumors metastasized behind her eyes; they left her blind for life. Michelle epitomizes the Chacon family spirit. At a very young age she attended the School for the Blind in Alamogordo. She had to fight off bullies and endure the loneliness of being away from her family. The experience galvanized her. Michelle has earned her Master’s degree in teaching blind children.
She owns her own house in Denver where she lives with her girls and grandchildren.
Mr. Chacon became an orphan when his mother passed away. Part of his childhood was spent at St. Joseph’s Orphanage in Albuquerque. Conditions there were so horrible, and he was so desperate for nutrition that he used to eat dirt for the minerals contained in it. His father remarried and his stepmother nursed him back to health from near death. He lived to marry a wonderful woman named Beatrice. Their philosophy of life is to live it one day at a time and to never give up.

It has been such an honor writing these stories for the Gallup Journey. While my stories have been more on a military nature, this one is going to be a bit different. I haven’t written too much about my family, but this time I wanted to talk about a recent trip to beautiful Los Angeles to see my son Eric-Paul’s art show.
The trip started out with a

Eric-Paul has become one of the top contemporary artists and has had many different shows around the country and beyond. I won’t go too much into detail other than to just say “Google him.” His full name is Eric-Paul Riege.
We were so blessed to be able to make this trip and to have our oldest son Daniel Escamilla travel up from San Diego to be with us. Daniel works as an office manager for a health facility on the Rincon Reservation. We were also

We took a tour of the museum and got to have a private showing of Eric-Paul’s art. We have been told that having a solo show at “The Hammer” is a big deal and everyone there was so nice to us and so happy to have Eric-Paul showing there.
On Saturday, Retha, Daniel and I meet up with a dear friend and Vietnam Veteran, Mr. Ken Hayashi. We have known Ken for a little over 10 years now and he is the nicest person anyone will ever meet. Prior to our trip I had asked Ken if we could meet up and go pay our respects to Mr. Vincent Okamoto. Mr. Okamoto or “The Judge” as we all
called him, passed in 2020. We called him The Judge because he was a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge. Many may know him as the author of Hershey’s Book, Forged in Fire. The Judge also wrote a book about his experiences in Vietnam
called, “Wolfhound Samurai” The Judge and Mr. Hayashi were best of friends and was so honored hearing the stories of their friendship.
I wanted to include a picture of The Judge and Ken Hayashi. I really like this one. It was from a cookout at The Judge’s house during the 2015 Nisei Week Event. I got the honor of traveling with Hershey to this event and to meet some amazing veterans to include several from the 442nd Regimental Combat Team from WW2. After paying our respects Mr. Hayashi took us to an amazing restaurant for lunch called “King’s Hawaiian Restaurant.” This is the same company that makes King’s Hawaiian Bread. There we shared more stories of “The Judge” and of past trips and visits we have all had together.
The rest of the Saturday was spent visiting and sightseeing to include some time on Hollywood Boulevard. Interesting place that’s for sure.
Sunday was also a day of visiting and hanging out, but there was one more spot we wanted to visit and that was the light pole exhibit outside of LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art). The only way to fully appreciate this amazing exhibit is at night.
Well Monday arrived and it was time to say goodbye, which is always sad. We are so proud of our son’s Daniel and EricPaul and of the amazing young men they have become.
Well to close this story I wanted to share this quote from the MOH Quote book. It’s from Howard V. Lee, United States Marine and Vietnam War MOH Recipient. His quote is as follows:
“Your moral values define you as a person and are the bedrock upon which an honorable and meaningful life is built.”
Judge smile for the picture, and he replied, I am smiling.”Afterward we were ready to eat and had a nice lunch/dinner and then headed to the Santa Monica Pier to do some sightseeing and more selfies.
Most winter weeds start small but if ignored become larger and more of a problem. By the time spring comes they may be three feet across or sending up their stalk of flowers to seed to repeat their cycle. We are lucky in New Mexico to have many days in winter with warm and calm weather when a job outside in the yard is welcomed. Removing these unwanted plants can be a pleasant hour spent and leave more
time in spring for other gardening.
First some basics: A weed is a plant that is growing where you don’t want it. Weeds are pioneers, the first to grow on bare earth, designed to break the ground open so others can follow. They are generally deep rooted, fast growing, spread rapidly, produce massive amounts of seeds, and are difficult to eliminate. They can take over a garden quickly because they reproduce by seed, from roots, or a
stem part you left in the ground.
Successful treatment depends on identifying the weed and understanding its life cycle. Weeds are most easily killed or removed when they are small. Timing is also important. Late summer weeds overwinter and do most of their growth the following spring. Herbicides need warm weather to be effective and mulches and weed block fabrics are easier to place in spring or summer. I have found removal of

There are many kinds of tools that will help you get the roots loosened but sometimes I grab one of the knives a friend gave me when I bought my house in Thoreau. She said there is nothing better to remove deep rooted weeds than an old steak knife—she was right. When you look around, there are usually only a few kinds of weeds that are green in winter. You will see: London Rocket, Common Mallow, Stork’s Beak, Dandelion, and Prickly Lettuce. I am focusing on the first three in this article.
LONDON ROCKET (Sisymbrium irio) is in the mustard family. Plants are a rosette of deeply lobed leaves similar to dandelion. In early spring it develops a tall stalk 2 to 3 feet tall with small yellow flowers in a cluster at the top. They are easy to pull.
COMMON MALLOW (Malva neglecta) is in the same family as hollyhocks. Plants start out as a small rosette of rounded leaves that have small white flowers and seeds like small hollyhock seeds. They rapidly become three feet wide and almost
impossible to remove even with tools, so removing them early is a priority.
STORK’S BILL or Redstem filaree (Erodium cicutarium) is in the geranium family. It is also a rosette that puts out a flower stalk with one small pinkish flower. The seed is over one inch long and resembles a stork’s bill which gets into animal’s fur and people’s clothes. The plant pulls easily and doesn’t get as big as the common mallow.

When we first envisioned Gallup Community Health (GCH), the core team believed firmly that healthcare is a human right and excellent, accessible care right here in Gallup is not only possible, but imperative. We also knew that Gallup, McKinley County and the surrounding communities are very special places filled with resilient, kind people who work hard and care hard for one another.
What we didn’t anticipate is how much our vision would align with the vision of our community and how incredible the community support would be. When a portion of the community lost access to prenatal care, GCH knew we needed to step in to be there for pregnant patients, babies and their families, but we couldn’t do it alone.
And you, our community both near and far, stepped up. And
stepped-up big time. In less than two weeks, with Sara Pikaart’s dedication, and with the help of so many others who shared their stories and shared our posts and donated, we are thrilled to announce that you successfully raised the $20,000 needed to begin offering prenatal care.

We are partnering with Cibola General in Grants to arrange for labor and delivery for many of our patients. We’ll be working with the ABQ hospitals as well. We continue to coordinate closely with OB/ GYN Dr. Walker and Dr. Palm. It takes a village - and the greater Gallup village is pretty amazing.
We will leave the GoFundMe up a bit longer in case there are others who would like to donate to GCH more generally.
