CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS WITH EXCEPTIONAL OFFERS ON THE GMC LINEUP.

Happy Holidays from the staff at Rico Auto Complex!

PLEASE DROP OFF YOUR TOYS IN OUR SHOWROOM TODAY.

DECEMBER CITY UPDATE THIS SEASON THE CITY OF GALLUP FIRE DEPARTMENT WOULD LIKE TO NOT ONLY WISH YOU HAPPY HOLIDAYS, BUT WANTS TO MAKE SURE YOUR FAMILY STAYS SAFE WITH SOME TIPS WHICH WILL ENSURE A FIRE-SAFE HOLIDAY SEASON. HOLIDAY DECORATING •Be careful with holiday decorations. Choose decorations that are flame-resistant or flame-retardant. •Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn. •Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both. •Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of mini light sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of LED strands to connect. •Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged. •Keep decorations away from windows and doors. HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING •Test your smoke alarms and tell guests about your home fire escape plan. •Keep children and pets away from lit candles. •Keep matches and lighters up high in a locked cabinet. •Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop. •Ask smokers to smoke outside. Remind smokers to keep their smoking materials with them so young children do not touch them. •Provide large, deep ashtrays for smokers. Wet cigarette butts with water before discarding. •Blow out lit candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving home or going to bed. WOOD STOVE SAFETY TIPS This time of year is notorious for its changing weather - warm one day, cold and damp the next. If you’re using wood heat to take the chill off your home, you need to be aware of the special safety hazard that burning wood can cause to your lungs. Burning wood improperly can be risky, especially if you don’t know what not to do when using wood fuel. Improper burning of wood can endanger your health and property. Even though wood is a natural fuel, if it is burned incorrectly, it can produce dangerous emissions, including carbon monoxide, organic gases, and smoke. To avoid this, be sure to burn only seasoned hardwoods, such as oak, maple, and hickory. Limit burning soft woods like pine or fir and never burn newly cut or wet wood. Never burn painted or treated wood, or wood products containing glue. Never burn magazines, gift wrap, or colored paper. They all produce particles that can clog a fireplace or wood stove’s air passages and can also produce noxious, corrosive or even carcinogenic gases. Be sure to inspect your wood stove or fireplace regularly, and keep them well maintained by having the chimney cleaned of creosote buildup every year to help prevent chimney fires. Heating with wood can warm up a chilly day, but for safety’s sake, make sure you burn wood with care. SAFETY TIPS FOR DEEP FRYING TURKEY 1. Stay Away from the House - Keep the fryer more than 10 feet away from your home and keep children and pets away. Never leave it unattended. 2. Find Flat Ground - The oil must be even and steady at all times to ensure safety. Place the fryer on a flat, level surface and carefully gauge the amount of oil needed. 3. Use a Thawed and Dry Turkey - Make sure your turkey is completely thawed and dry. Extra water will cause the oil to bubble furiously and spill over. If oil spills from the fryer onto the burner, it can cause a fire. 4. Monitor the Temp - Use caution when touching the turkey fryer. The lid and handle can become very hot and could cause burns. Also be sure to keep track of the oil’s temperature as many fryers do not have their own thermostats. 5. Be Prepared – Have a fire extinguisher (multipurpose, dry-powder) ready at all times in the event that the oil ignites.

The City of Gallup wishes you a safe, happy, and festive holiday season. Mayor Jackie McKinney Councilor Linda Garcia Councilor Allan Landavazo Councilor Yogash Kumar Councilor Fran Palochak

Thoughts From The West End We live in exciting times, yet a daunting epoch. Religion, science, mysticism, and rationalism are proving each other right, rather than wrong. Poets, religious mystics, and toddlers have tried to tell us for centuries that our heart knows something that our mind does not. Well my friends, welcome to 2017! Our wonderful era of science/ data/discovery is now proving that the gurus, and love songs of the 80s were actually quite accurate: The heart does in fact know. To be more specific the heart apparently has a brain of its own. It is now medically proven that the heart has its own brain that is composed of about 40,000 neurons that sense, feel, learn, and remember. Most of us have been taught in school that the heart is constantly responding to orders sent by the brain, but in actuality the heart sends many more signals to the brain than the other way around. This heart-brain input has a significant impact on cranial-brain functioning, emotional processing, and body chemistry. Other research indicates that beyond the neural connections that heart-brain communicates with, there is also an electromagnetic field that the heart generates. This electromagnetic field is 5000 times stronger than the electromagnetic field the brain generates, and current medical equipment can detect this heart-field from as far as seven feet away. Some researchers think this electromagnetic field also communicates with our cranial-brains, as well as with others people around us. This research, granted, seems a bit out there to me, but how often do we describe people as having a certain contagious energy or intuition? Perhaps the most interesting body of research comes from heart transplant patients who inexplicably and consistently have taken on passions, tastes, and personality traits from their donors’ hearts. A soft-spoken mother who couldn’t even stomach to watch a football game with her husband was given the heart of a boxer; she now loves football, sports in general, and is occasionally caught cussing and hitting things. Likewise, a gentleman with no history of literary skill strangely becomes a passionate writer after receiving a heart from a donor; his wife was confused of what to do with the suddenly-emerging love poetry from him. He also now loves Mexican food. Seems like throughout folklore, religion, and legend, there has always been some sort of battle between heart and head. We are so often taught that our rational cranial-brains should take priority, perhaps especially so today in a data driven culture. But now science is showing that there certainly may be justification in adhering to the old adage to “follow your heart” …because it is now proven that the heart is much more knowledgeable than we previously thought. At a deeper level, when we shut out the voice of our heart, I believe the boring, banal, droning hum of our mind will get increasing louder. We will then become the dispassionate, heartless, robotic mass of humanity whose only goal in life is to analyze, consume, and survive: AKA our hearts have become hard. As a wise prophet once wrote…who was then quoted by an even wiser prophet of supposed divine birth: “Your hearts have grown hard, With your ears you hear…but you do not understand With your eyes you see…but you do not perceive If you would understand with your heart, then you would see with your eyes, and hear with your ears, and then you would turn to me, and I would heal you.” -cvd 6

Make it a Gallup Christmas 10

December 2017

C

hristmas is a time for family, friends, and the community to come together and give thanks for God’s miraculous gift. The way many of us do this is by giving presents to those in our lives. Of course, you could spend hours in front of the computer and order those heartfelt gifts, but to many of us this feels very much not like Christmas. Gallup is filled with locally owned stores that are more than capable of filling the space below your Christmas tree. Shopping locally also allows you the opportunity to meet Gallupians who can become part of your circle of friends. Plus, how much fun is it to carry home shopping bags which are filled with the gifts? Your loved ones will greatly enjoy opening these hand-picked gifts at your Christmas celebration. Having boxes delivered to your front door after completing a human-less transaction on your computer just doesn’t seem to capture the Spirit of Christmas. We often forget about how

shopping locally improves our communities; especially in a world that promotes easy instead of the reward of getting to know your neighbors. Remember, each time you buy locally, you contribute to the gross receipts tax that allows our community to make improvements. Each time you buy online from a business that has no ties to our community, we lose out on money that would be returned here through taxes. Also, buying locally creates jobs, and what better gift for someone who is looking for a paying job. So, this Christmas, make the effort to get out and buy locally. It will be an experience which will heighten the joy felt at this special time of year. We have put together a small list of stores and businesses which will allow you to find a heartfelt gift for those you love. Remember, Gallup has many more locally-owned stores than just those mentioned here; making it a great time of year to get out and explore our amazing community.

Sports World If you are a frequent reader of the Gallup Journey, you know that we are fans of many amazing outdoor activities. We make it no secret that Gallup is the Adventure Capital of New Mexico, and that makes perfect sense to us. The High Desert Trail System is very popular among those single track riders. It is a destination point for many off-road enthusiasts who make their way to Gallup. So, whether you are riding your bike in town or adventure to the surrounding area, you will find a trail designed just for your style of riding. There are also some designated roads with bike lanes for you roadies, and don’t forget about the Brick Yard Bike Park which is designed for riders who do their thing on BMX machines. It is our opinion that everyone in town should be riding a bike. With that said, it is time for you to head to Sports World. This is our only dedicated bike shop and deserves the loyalty of us adventurers. You will find a wide selection of specialized bicycles here. They have everything from dual-suspension trail beasts to slick lightweight road machines. Plus, they have all the accessories you can think of, and have a fullservice center to take care of any bike ailment or just for a needed tune-up. Owner Todd Costley will make sure you find the right bike suited for your riding ability. This guy knows a thing or two about bicycles. He was building half-pipes as a kid before any of us knew what they were. Todd has spent a lifetime dedicated to his sport and shows this dedication to everyone who walks through the doors of his business. At Sports World, they do more than just sell and service bikes. They can also handle your screen printing jobs, and have recently added embroidery to the services they offer. Make this Christmas a two-wheeled one. You can find your new bike at 1500 South Second Street in Gallup.

Makeshift Gallery Sometimes the best gifts are those that are handmade. Makeshift Gallery specializes in these handmade gifts. This unique, local artistcooperative definitely offers the opportunity to find that perfect gift. You will find the gallery filled with photography art, recycled art, stationary, soaps, candles, furniture, and clothing, among other one-of-a-kind pieces. They have a committed-following that loves to see what is new in the gallery. This is the place where you are truly going to find that special gift this Christmas Season. Makeshift Gallery is located downtown at 213 West Coal Avenue. You might want to start your Christmas shopping here because once the item is gone, one-of-a-kind pieces are not replenished. Being downtown will lead you to other Gallup locally-owned destinations, and that will make it a perfect way to experience your Gallup shopping excursion.

High Desert Cycles

I can’t think of a better way to explore our wide-open spaces than with a road bike, dirt bike, four-wheeler, or with a versatile UTV. These recreational vehicles are a gift idea for anyone in the family. Imagine hitting the beautifully landscaped roads that wind from Gallup to the Ice Caves on your new cruiser. Gallup is also home to a dedicated Off-Highway Vehicle Park which is the perfect place to ride your new dirt bike or ATV, creating a convenient way for the whole family to participate in this rewarding activity. You could also explore the jeep trails of McGaffey with your new Utility Vehicle; the perfect gift for those extreme outdoor enthusiasts. High Desert Cycles has been part of Gallup for decades. However, this year it has come under new ownership. Kevin Menapace is excited about his new business and has brought an energized spirit to the dealership. He has made improvements in the showroom, and his staff is ready to greet you with excellent

14

customer service. Kevin carries a large inventory of Yamaha and Suzuki models. Plus, he also has an impressive inventory of quality used motorcycles which includes a Harley Davidson. High Desert Cycles takes care of the whole life-cycle of owning a motorcycle or recreational vehicle. You will be able to find the perfect bike, ATV or UTV here, use a variety of financing tools, and after you get out the door, you will be able to return to get your bike serviced. This Christmas might be the perfect time to buy because of Holiday specials. You will also find a wide selection of Husqvarna chainsaws at High Desert Cycle, and just like the bikes, they also provide service for them. It is time to introduce yourself to the staff at High Desert Cycles this Christmas and walk away with the perfect Christmas gift. High Desert Cycle is located at 1315A Hamilton Road off of Highway 491 on the north side of Gallup.

The Holiday Season is all about festivities, and many of these festivities include eating. It is a fact that Americans love to eat and during the Holiday Season that stretches from Thanksgiving to Christmas. During this time, many of us will add a few pounds to our often already overweight physiques. Some studies suggest that the average American will add as many as ten pounds to their body during the Holidays. That is why so many of us make New Year’s Resolutions to lose those pounds. Gyms are full of new members in January and many start a new life style for being healthier and feeling better. A gym membership is a great Christmas gift, and for those who really like to shower their loved ones with gifts, you could purchase a full year membership. This gift will keep on giving all year long. Wowie started his first gym in Gallup in 1993. One look at this guy and you immediately realize he knows a few things about fitness. He is a fitness and health nut, and that shows in his diverse weight room. Here you will find nautilus machines, free weights and a wide-open area dedicated for stretching and other non-machine-related exercises. Wowie also has a wide selection of cardio machines for those more interested in running, stair stepping and rowing. Wowie does more than just own a gym. He also operates Wowie’s Mobile Sounds with his son. If you are thinking about having a holiday party, get in touch with Wowie to supply the music and serve as the live entertaining disc jockey. Wowie’s Gym is located at 1500 South Second Street in the Trade Mart Square. You can contact owners Dennis (Wowie) and Tina Rosales at (505) 863-4858.

Zimmerman’s Western Wear

Gallup and the surrounding area are home to many rodeos. You will also find many small ranches that raise cattle, sheep, and horses in this same area. That lifestyle influences the way many of us dress in this part of the world. Ranching and cowboying requires clothes that are comfortable, but at the same time can take a beating. Getting thrown from a rank bull or fixing a fence can be tough on your clothing. However, there is no need to worry, because Zimmerman’s Western Wear specializes in outfitting you in the right clothing. Zimmerman’s Western Wear was established in 1947 and has served Gallup proudly ever since. The Bonaguidi family owns several businesses in Gallup, and they are known for their friendly customer service. You will find Tony Bonaguidi taking care of all your western clothing needs at Zimmerman’s. He grew up in this type of business and that experience shows in his quality and diverse inventory.

Every cowgirl and cowboy needs the perfect pair of boots, cowboy hat, shirt, belt, and jeans. Zimmerman’s carries top brands like Cinch, Wrangler, Justin, Tony Lama, Ariat, Resistol, Stetson, Serratelli, Wolverine, and Caterpillar to fill those clothing needs. This is a real store with a real dressing room that allows you the opportunity to make sure what you are purchasing is the right size. A knowledgeable sales staff will make sure you leave with the perfect Christmas gifts. Plus, this holiday season is the perfect time to save with many special sales running in the store. If you can’t find what you are looking for at Zimmerman’s, don’t worry. Tony can walk you around the corner to another Bonaguidi establishment, City Electric. Here you will find specialty items like saddles and custom leather goods. Zimmerman’s is located in downtown Gallup at 216 West Historic 66 Avenue and City Electric is around the corner at 230 West Coal Avenue.

WHAT’S A HADACOL?

PATENT MEDICINES IN AMERICAN CULTURE “What’s Hadacol? Well, basically, it’s a patent medicine—a little honey, a little of this and that, and a stiff shot of alcohol hyped up with Vitamin B. Actually it’s a great deal more. It’s a craze. It’s a culture. It’s a political movement.” —Newsweek, 1951 AUTHOR’S NOTE: Sometimes there is just so much good material; I have to revisit stories, especially when there are great pictures. Enjoy. So what was Hadacol good for? The inventor, guest on the old Groucho Marx television show, answered the question flippantly, saying with a grin, “Hadacol was good for five and a half million for me last year.” For the public, it was a burden on the budget. This stuff wasn’t cheap, but apparently, it was addictive. Hadacol was created by one Dudley J. LeBlanc, probably the last flim-flam man of his stature,. He was a charismatic Louisiana senator of Cajun descent, straight from the mold of that state’s amazing politicians like Huey Long. Truly, they just don’t make con men like that anymore. LeBlanc claimed he couldn’t understand anyone drinking the “medicine” as a beverage. The sickly brown sludge looked bad, tasted worse and actually stunk. The alcohol content wasn’t as great as most patent medicines before it, and it lacked the narcotic goodness of many. Two things made it special: promotion and timing. By the middle of the twentieth century, nearly all the great patent medicines were barely a memory. So LeBlanc re-invented the Medicine Show, only with more famous stars. At one point, he was putting a million dollars a month into advertising. In the early 50s??

luck boy and his ever-present black cloud, is one of the most iconic characters in Li’l Abner). One of my favorites is Lonesome Polecat and Hairless Joe (They count as one). The name, “Kickapoo Joy Juice”, was originally coined as a “volatile brew” in the comic strip. Al Capp, the Hillbilly cartoonist (where did you think Li’l Abner came from?), described the drink as “a liquor of such stupefying potency that the hardiest citizens of Dogpatch, after the first burning sip, rose into the air, stiff as frozen codfish”. Lonesome Polecat and Hairless Joe whipped the stuff up while hidden deep in a cave in the woods, and when a batch “needed more body”, the formidable pair simply went out and clubbed some animal and tossed it in. Over the years, the “recipe” has called for live grizzly bears, panthers, kerosene, horseshoes, and anvils, among other ingredients. Along the way, Capp said emphatically that the beverage was not “moonshine”, though it sure looked like it. But then, Hairless Joe is pretty well covered with a shaggy hairdo and a bushy beard. On his face, the only things that show are his nose and ears. Al Capp was making fun of a popular group of cures that drew on Indians for their authenticity. There were a number of these concoctions and they went by many names, but somehow “Kickapoo” had the most clout. Frank Cushing, something of a sensationalist

Sadly, Hadacol had neither great packaging, nor garish flyers: two things that attracted customers and unwanted attentions from the Food and Dug people. The Senator himself wrote the hit song, Hadacol Boogie, or Hadacol Bounce, and it was recorded by many stars, including Jerry Lee Lewis. But it soon took on a life of its own, circulating as folk tune, with endless variations on the lyrics. Given LeBlanc’s background, there was a Cajun version in French, or two or three of them. Hadacol would not have been what it was without all the crazy patent medicines that came before it, even if they were being forgotten by then. One of my favorites is the Kickapoo Joy Juice. Though cartoonist Al Capp created many unforgettable characters (Joe Btfsplk, the bad

AN EARLY USE OF CAPSASIN TO RELIEVE PAIN. BUT HE DIDN’T SPELL CHILE RIGHT. sense that it wasn’t a real thing you could buy at the local apothecary. It was called “Cupid’s Love Potion”, and the ingredients were “Indian nut, Lunar rock dust, Bee honey, Sigh of Angels, Cinnamon and mint and [for good luck] Fairy Potion”. I suspect this one was a joke. Smedley’s Chillie Paste appears to be legitimate, except for the spelling of Chile and all the things it pretended to cure. But for “muscular rheumatism, neuralgia, lumbago, and gouty pains”, it probably gave some relief because the capsaicin found in chile is widely used today as a pain reliever. You have to be able to tolerate it on your skin though. One of the most bizarre treatments in a world of crazy cures was the tapeworm diet. I have come across The Ugly-Girl Papers, a guide to Victorian beauty, and it promoted some pretty drastic measures for ugly girls to get pretty. Most of them, including those ridiculous corsets, were dangerous to life and limb. Astonishingly, you can still find this cure on line, or for big bucks in a Mexican clinic. Here’s how it worked. You buy a bottle of the cure that includes tapeworm eggs—some advertised live tapeworms. They then hatch inside you. The tapeworms eat up most of the calories from dinner, leaving you slim and lovely. Even at the time, the cure was debunked on the grounds there was no way to keep a tapeworm, or its eggs, alive in the bottle of gunk. The cure got a lot of attention, but it probably wasn’t ever very popular. Finally, how about this one? “Take Two Bile Beans And Call Me In The Morning.” In actuality, it was a laxative, but the inventor, Charles Forde, claimed it was derived from an unknown plant he discovered with the help of ancient Australian Aborigines. The “beans” were concocted from aloe [the active laxative] along with cardamom, peppermint oil, and wheat flour, coated with black gelatin. They looked something like beans. Take two and call me in the morning. - ernie@buffalomedicine.com

THE FOUR LAST THINGS “I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring By Jay Mason

T

he winter is a time to tell stories and talk of serious things in the Navajo culture. For Christians the year ends in November with the Feast of Christ the King. During that period, we should take time to think about the Four Last Things, namely, Death, Judgment, Hell, and Heaven. The new Christian year begins in December with Advent in which we are to prepare for the coming of Christ with penance and sacrifice. It is not all Christmas parties and presents. It is time to think about our life on this earth and hopefully the life to come thereafter. The first last thing is Death. We all fear death. It is naturally human to do so. Most of us don’t want to think about it. There is a Navajo taboo about even talking about death or taking action to plan after death. I have lost count of the number of disputes in tribal court that could have been avoided if the deceased person had just written a will to say how they wanted their possessions to be distributed after their death. Because, guess what, we are all going to die someday. As a Christian, I need to think about the death of Christ. It was not pleasant. The Gospels tell us the story of the agony of His death. I always wanted to die peacefully in my sleep. My lovely wife says if I don’t get a CPAP machine that is exactly what is going to happen. But Christ has bequeathed us an unpleasant experience that resembles His own death. Death is not fun. That is the point; we give up our life in an agonizing fashion to receive something greater that transcends life as we know it - an eternal life hopefully in Heaven with God. The second last thing is the Judgment. There is a preliminary judgment just after we die, but I am talking about our Final Judgment. We make judgments about things every day. The courts pass judgment on people who commit crimes. We are cautioned by Christ, “Judge not, lest ye be judged.” We are asked to forgive those who trespass against us. We should avoid judging others especially as to their ultimate fate. That is God’s job not ours. Our secular world rebels against the idea that any of us will be judged for our actions (unless we violate the law and get caught). That same world says,

Merry C

26

December 2017

“Do whatever you want to do; life is short. Eat dessert first. Don’t worry about it.” I would suggest that we might want to consider that there might be an ultimate judgment of each one of us by God. I have a four-year-old grandchild, John Marie. He went to lunch with his dad and grandpa and overheard our conversation about the terrorist tragedy involving the truck running over cyclists in New York City. He interrupted our conservation to tell us, “Jesus is going to tell the mad guys (he says mad instead of bad) that he loves them all the way to the moon and back; if they don’t change into good guys, he will hiyah them, and they will change into good guys….I hope.” The wisdom of little children should not be ignored. Some people say, “I will go to Heaven, no matter what.” I say no, and so does the Bible in many places. “Work out your salvation in fear and trembling.” Philippians 2:12. As I get older, I am in a constant state of fear and trembling. If my Final Judgment is anything like the judgment my lovely bride expresses about my actions at times, I am in real trouble. I need forgiveness and the sacrament of confession. There is hope, even for me. I am still here on this Earth; I still have a chance to get my soul in a proper condition to see God faceto-face. The Bible says in the Book of Joel that the final judgment will take place in the Josaphat Valley near Jerusalem. I hope to see everyone there, and that it comes out all right. The third last thing is your worst nightmare, Hell. Many people, even Christians, don’t believe that Hell exists. They believe that all of us will eventually find our way to Heaven. In my lifetime I have seen people and nations in our world create Hell on earth. There is evil in this world. Our time has certainly demonstrated that fact. God doesn’t create war and famine; man does. God does not attack the most innocent among us, the very young, and the very old; man does. What if what the Bible says is true? Satan exists, and we can choose on our own to go to a place where there is no God forever, namely Hell. It is also a place of constant sorrow and torment. We have that free will given to us by our Creator. We make the choice while we are here on this Earth. Later there will be no choice, and only God knows what choice we have made. Remember the parable of the rich man who died and finds himself in Hell. He had five brothers. After his death, he begs Abraham to send the beggar Lazarus to tell his brothers that Hell exists and that they should turn away from sin. What happens? He is reminded that his siblings must make their own choice just as he did.

Christmas

Just so we don’t get too depressed and lose hope, let’s talk about the last, last thing, namely HEAVEN. Just about every religion on Earth believes that there is an afterlife or Heaven. Christianity is no different. Many non-believers have tried to build Heaven on Earth with fame, money, or power. All have failed. Trust me, it is not here. This is the good news. We do not deserve Heaven. We cannot earn it. It is given to us by the grace of God. We can only have faith and do God’s good work while we can. Now we come back to preparation. Our time to prepare is here and now. In this time of Advent when we prepare for Christ to come on this Earth to save us, we can prepare our own soul for the ultimate gift of Heaven. It is not easy. We must be honest with ourselves about our shortcomings. We must pray for grace from God. But what a reward! To live forever with God without pain or sorrow is the greatest gift of all. Let us take advantage of the time that remains for us. Merry Christmas!

Veteran’s Corner

THE GIFT OF PATRIOTISM

By Sandra McKinney

“I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” ― Charles Dickens The Spirit of Christmas-giving started early this year…in fact, it started in the month of May when our local veterans began collecting funds for a giant flagpole and United States flag. It started with pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters, and then the paper money began to be stuffed into the collection boxes. The idea of the flag started to “catch fire” and local businesses wrote checks for large amounts. Gallup is, after all, the Most Patriotic Small Town in America. Collections were made throughout the summer at every event the veterans attended. People from all around the Four Corners contributed to the flag project. We wrote about Randal and Vesta Hasler back in the May issue of the Journey telling how the “idea sparked” to have a large flag placed somewhere within Gallup. It truly was their

idea which got the donations rolling in, although, many other veterans and civilian residents of Gallup had the thought in the back of their minds. “As the donations began to quickly grow,” Randal said with surprise, “we were astounded! Originally, we thought the project would take at least a year, or maybe even two years. We could not believe sufficient funds were collected within a few MONTHS!” Then the idea came about to raise the flag on the day that Governor Martinez and other veteran officials would be in Gallup to dedicate the land for the National Veterans Cemetery. This is when the flag became a community project. Randal and Vesta Henry went to work contacting the crews that would be needed to complete the project. Community businesses stepped in to assist: Robert Roche of Gallup Land Partners donated the land for the flag. The McKinley County Road Crew graded the road up the hill to the flag. The City of Gallup Electrical Department started the various holes for the base of the flag and dug the trench from the flag position to the transformer for the electrical conduit. Matthew Long with Murphy Builders stepped in with his crew to finish digging the 8-foot hole; they placed the sleeve in the hole that would hold the flag and prepared the hole with the framing for the concrete. supplied 30 bags of silica sand to fill the sleeve that supports the flag pole. C & E Concrete provided 16 yards of concrete (two truckloads) to fill the 8-foot hole and create the base of the flag. Murphy Builders’ crew oversaw the pouring and leveling of the concrete. Jerry and Jay Hinkley and crew of Hinkley Signs set the 80-foot flag pole into the sleeve. City of Gallup Electrical crew hooked up the electricity to the flag pole. The quilters of the Quilts of Valor group are making a bag to store the flag when not flying. On October 25th, a large assembly of people was on the hill at 7:00am to raise the flag for the very first time. The early hour allowed the flag to rise as the sun broke over the eastern horizon. It was a very emotional sight. There were veterans, City officials, civilians; every one of them a patriot! This The plaque which will be placed at the base of the flag was the test run and the flag was flying proudly for the dedication of the grounds for the National Veterans Cemetery further down Hasler Valley Road. It was very exciting to be involved in the initial raising of the giant flag. I-40 is right below, and we could hear car horns and 18-wheelers honking at the sight. A huge cheer went up from the gathered crowd when the Stars and Stripes reached the top of the pole. There were tears shed on that morning, particularly by veterans who had fought for the glory of Old Faithful. At 5:00pm that evening, the flag was lowered with dignity and respect so work could be completed on the electricity and the lighting. Gallup’s Patriot Guard protecting the perimeter as the flag is November 11, 2017 — Veterans Day permanently raised on Veterans Day — was a very full day of patriotism and recognition of our veterans. A wreathlaying was held at Hillcrest Cemetery, and then a large group of patriots paraded from Hillcrest to the Court House Square where ceremonies were held. At 1:00pm a very large contingent of patriots gathered at The National Guard Armory on Hasler Valley Road to witness Old Glory rise into the blue sky and clouds. Once again, many veterans and supporters were on top of the hill for the honor of assisting with the flag-raising. Even though many of them had been involved with the test-run, you could see the pride in the veteran’s faces as they saluted the flag when it reached the top of the pole. The sun was shining brightly and greeted the flag in full splendor. We extend our gratitude to Randal and Vesta Henry for their vision of a large flag to fly in Gallup, New Mexico. We thank the many businesses and individuals listed above for their donation of time, knowledge, and product to raise this flag. We thank all the many, many business owners, individuals; adults and small children who made monetary donations from change in The People’s Flag flying in all its glory their pocket to checks from their bank account. This is THE PEOPLE’S FLAG!! 30

Merry Christmas to all from the Gallup Journey

christmas THEparty CHRISTMAS

A

PARTY

s another year comes to an end, most of us are looking forward to that free meal provided by our employer. This is a time when we get to relax with our fellow co-workers and be on equal ground with everyone. That one dinner really gives us some valuable insight on how our boss feels about us. Where and what we eat tells us a lot. Let’s say the Christmas Party is going to take place at the office. This will save time because it can begin right after work and get everyone home earlier. Another idea to save time is start cooking the hotdogs in a crockpot around 2 o’clock. If you get them started right at 2 o’clock, they will be ready to go at 5 o’clock. The Christmas Party literally becomes like clockwork. Once you clock out of your job at 5 o’clock, you can head to the break room where the hotdogs are ready to eat. It is as simple as grabbing a bun, throwing some chips on your Dixie plate and “getting your eat on”. Since everything is happening so quickly you probably do not want to slow things down with something like Secret Santa. Yes, you are going to be home quick because this is not going to take long at all. If the above scenario is familiar, it might be safe to say the company just didn’t have a good year. I know this has to be the case because your boss would reward you with an awesome Christmas Party if the company just had a better year. You spend all of your time at work, and you give it all for the company. Yeah, it must have just been a bad year. Next year you will get this thing turned around. When you have that record year, I know exactly what your Christmas Party will be like. The boss will send out a Christmas Party invitation for you and a significant other. This party is going to be somewhere nice, and it will not be like last year when you had to stand and eat that hotdog. You are actually going to sit down at a table and be waited on. Plus, everyone will be receiving gifts from their Secret Santa. The boss will take time during the party to thank you personally for all you do, and you will in return tell him how thankful you are to be part of the team. You will look down at your watch and realize the evening has flown by. Now, this is the Christmas Party you had dreamed about. No boss wants to be the hotdogs-in-the-crockpot boss. Now that you are ready to turn over a new leaf, you will have several choices here in Gallup to spoil your employees. You will be able to find places that serve a variety of flavors. On the next two pages are suggestions for places to have a party to get you in the mood!

Shining Stars Within The Community The human spirit is one of ability, perseverance, and courage that no disability can steal away.

A

bright star is shining in Northwest New Mexico. For the third time, Northwest New Mexico has been the site of a Shining Star event that brings people together to help celebrate the lives of people with developmental disabilities. Shining Star is shining a light on the fact that people with developmental disabilities have much to contribute when they are a part of their community. Shining Star was first presented to New Mexico communities in 2014 when the New Mexico Department of Health, Developmental Disabilities Supports Division Statewide Community Inclusion program, contracted with Beth Mount Consulting to facilitate the Shining Star event at Red Rock Park. With a mix of creative art work, informal talks and plenty of delicious food, Shining Star events spotlight the unique and valuable life experiences of the Shining Star participants. Story Board collages are developed during the two day event to tell the story of each participant’s life. The completed Story Boards clearly show that pictures do indeed express much more than just words. People with developmental disabilities don’t just stay home anymore; they work, they volunteer, they develop friendships, they give back to their community, they go shopping, to

42

December 2017

the movies, to church, they spend money eating in local restaurants, they travel and they do so much more. Through the Story Boards and the Shining Star events, it is clear that the participants are living lives rich with meaningful experiences. The brightest part of the event is when everyone gathers in a circle as each Story Board is presented and a verbal telling of the individual’s story is given; smiles and applause always follow. Continuing the momentum of the two day event, the Shining Star participants are able to share their life experience by having their unique Story Boards displayed in various community venues after the event. You are likely to see the 2017 Shining Star Story Board colleges, as well as the Shining Stars themselves, when you’re out and about in the community. Take some time to view the Story Boards and read the accompanying short narrative; you will no doubt agree that these Shining Stars bring light to our communities. Local coordinator for the 2017 Shining Star event is Orlinda Charleston, Community Inclusion Coordinator at the New Mexico Department of Health, Developmental Disabilities Supports Division in Gallup. For more information about the event, please call (505) 863-9937.

Walking in Beauty

C

hristmas is a time for families and friends to get together while sharing a meal. I don’t know about you but during this season we see all kinds of goodies coming our way. Homemade cookies, breads, fudge, you name it, anything with some sugar and we know Christmas has arrived. If you want to survive the Christmas season without packing on an extra 10 pounds, here are three suggestions to try. First, do not try to cut-calories by skipping meals during the day. Saving up for that one big meal will only cause you to eat more when the time comes. It is important to eat balanced meals throughout the day that include plenty of vegetables and fruits. Have fruits and vegetables cut-up and ready to go so that when you are hungry you can grab these first. Also, recognize when you are full. Remember not to encourage your children to clean their plates, but let them know it

is okay to stop when full. Second, keep a balanced environment in your home. Help your children see that these traditional foods are only one aspect of the Christmas season. Modeling to them the real reason for the season is time spent with our loved ones. Instead of the main-focus of our celebrations being food, let’s take time to go for a walk, go see a play, play in the snow or play a board game. Starting your own traditions with your family that do not involve food can help model good behaviors that promote a healthy lifestyle. A new tradition may include a fun-walk or run. Look for things in your area that promote physical activity. The third suggestion is about what to do if you are visiting with relatives that do not share the same idea as you for a healthy lifestyle. While visiting, find time to spend with your family in regular physical activity. Offer to help with the grocery shopping and help make recipes that include a variety of vegetables and fruits. The Christmas season can be a stressful time for all of us, but by just remembering to not skip meals and having healthy choices in our homes, along with some added activity, we can all have a guiltfree Christmas season.

Merry Christmas from Camille’s!!!

TAX SEASON GUIDE FOR 2018

By Jason Arsenault Tax season is just around the corner. You can do several things to get yourself prepared. Instead of waiting until the last minute and not remembering what you did with the documents you need to complete your tax return. The first thing is to decide what form you need to fill out. The Internal Revenue Service uses three different forms for you to report your taxes. The three forms are: Form 1040EZ: You will want to use this form if you will NOT be claiming any credits or deductions. However, it does allow you to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit. This is the easiest form to use. Form 1040A: Use this form if your taxable income is less than $100,000 and you don’t plan to itemize your deductions. You will still be able to claim tax credits, like child and dependent care expenses. Form 1040: Anyone can use this form to file their taxes. This is a very robust form that allows you take all the deductions and credits available to you. If you claim itemized deductions, this is the form you will want to use. Documents you will need Probably the most important document you will need to file your tax return is your W-2 Statement. Employers must have this document made available to its employees by January 31st. This statement is reported to the IRS and tells them how much taxable income you earned during the year. However, some of you will need to watch the mail for other important statements in order to complete your tax return. If you have investments like stocks which you have sold during the 50

December 2017

year through a broker you will receive Form 1099-B. Or, if you have long term investments which have earned dividend income, you will receive Form 1099-DIV. These forms will have information that you will need to report on your tax return. Also, if you have a savings account with your bank, they will send you Form 1099-INT. Each of these forms are required to be mailed to you by January 31st. You are required to report all income on your tax return. However, you also want to make sure you have the statements that reduce your taxable income. If you have made any charitable contributions during the year you can deduct these on Schedule A – Itemized Deductions. The Internal Revenue Service requires that you keep a record of your deduction with a bank record or a statement from the charity. One of the biggest deductions many of you will use on your Schedule A is your Home Mortgage Interest Deduction. Your mortgage lender will issue Form 1098 which will show the interest paid during the year. Help With Your Taxes President Donald Trump is trying to pass Tax Reform in time for the 2018 tax season. His Tax Plan could make significant changes and add more anxiety to the already stressful requirements. If you don’t already use a tax professional this might be a perfect time to start. Certified Public Accountants are required to stay up to date on all the new tax laws. They are also required to complete up to 40 hours of continuing education each year. You have the security of using someone who makes it their business to know taxes, not just a seasonal preparer. Gallup has a handful of CPAs who are ready to help you.

The True Meaning of Christmas It was Christmas time, 20 years ago, in this Texas cowboy community located three hours from any major city. The new local hospital was in a crisis as it had failed to obtain State and Medicare licenses. No license….No payment. The new administrator was speaking to his sister by phone about the predicament in which he found himself. “Please say a prayer that this gets resolved soon,” he asked. His sister quickly replied, “I will do more than that. I will start a prayer chain.” A week later he called her excitedly, “Guess what? A friend of mine, a PhD consultant, stopped to visit. Apparently, she grew up here and still has horses and property here. The good news is, her consulting work is helping hospitals become licensed and accredited.” He quickly added, “HOW LUCKY CAN I GET?” “WAIT, WAIT, WAIT!” came her reply faster than a hummingbird can flutter. “What did you say? You call me and we get a prayer chain started with family. Then we contact the nuns who taught us in school. Then we request prayers in church. And God sent you blessings and you call it luck. Are you totally kidding me?” she added. Her brother was embarrassed. So much so, that he vowed never to refer to “Blessings” as luck again. But upon reflection he took it even further. He went to a place that each of us should go. He went to his heart and soul. He pondered the fact that the Lord had sent someone to him. Then he thought deeply. “And to whom am I supposed to be a Blessing? Who is waiting for me to provide a word of encouragement?

Who is waiting for me to provide some hope? Who is waiting for me to provide a meal, or clothing, or shoes for their children? Are we not all supposed to carry blessings from Christ to others?” “We all need to provide shelter to the homeless just as if they are company in our home. We need to feed the hungry as if they are guests at our table. We need to care for the battered as if we are a shelter in the storm. We need to greet those in addiction recovery as the father did his prodigal son—with love and an embrace.” His eyes began to water as he reflected on what Christ did for each of us. “Funny,” he thought to himself, “how we all seek the true spirit of Christmas, looking everywhere, when it is all around us.” “Open your eyes,” he thought again to himself, “the true Spirit of Christmas is in the Blessings we bring to others.”

Merry Christmas

Others may call it luck. But we know that blessings are a gift from Christ...just as his birth was 2017 years ago. —PALACIOS

A Christmas Miracle

It was six months ago, and a day, when her husband passed away. The doctors said, “There’s no more to do,” so she quit her job to help him through.

The child was sleeping when his father died, to tell her son, oh how she tried. The little boy cried that night, full of fear, full of fright. And on that night she lost her faith, never to believe in the “Pearly Gate”. She made a vow to never pray, it meant nothing now, anyway. At the funeral, he could only stare, wishing that his Dad were there. Tears were filling people’s eyes, saddened by the young boy’s cries. As the months went by, things got rough, she went back to work, but it wasn’t enough. With no food, no money, and bills to pay, she just couldn’t bring herself to pray. Before she knew it, it was Christmas Time, and she wasn’t able to save a dime. She felt so bad that she had no tree, for all her son’s friends to see.

Her son would sulk, it wasn’t fair, she hated to see him in despair. She wanted to give her son some joy, oh how she wished she had a toy.

THEN: The mother got to her knees to pray, asking the Lord to hear her say. She asked for help to return a smile, to the face of her little child. On Christmas Morning, the boy was screaming, she saw his eyes were wide and gleaming. At the door were games, toys, even a bike, and a card that said “for the tyke.” With a great big smile and eyes so bright, he kissed his mom as he held her tight. She learned that a charity heard of her plight, and frantically scrambled through the night.

THEN AGAIN: The mother got to her knees to pray, thanking the Lord for hearing her say. She thanked the Lord for returning a smile, to the face of her little child. —By Paul R. MacPherson Somerville, MA

On Christmas Eve, they slept together, she promised her son, she’d be there forever. He asked her if Santa was coming tonight, she whispered no, with tears in sight.
