Twee susters, Linda Lensley (59) en Rina le Grange (64) is gedurende die vroeë oggendure van Maandag, 17 Oktober 2016 op ‘n wreedaardige wyse in Pearly Beach tydens ‘n inbraak beroof en aangerand. Inbrekers het ‘n veiligheidshek oopforseer en by die braaikamer van die huis ingegaan, waar die een ‘n graaf en die ander een ‘n braaitang gekry het. Die susters het in een van die strandhuisies van Pearly Beach Vakansieoord aan die seekant, beter bekend as “Die Bungalows”, vakansie gehou. Hulle het geslaap en het van
Linda Lensley is deur haar suster, Denise Schultz in die MediClinic in Hermanus afgeneem, nadat sy en haar ouer suster wreedaardig in hul vakansiehuis in Pearly Beach aange-rand en beroof is.

‘n harde geluid wakker geword. Linda het ondersoek gaan instel toe sy sien die veiligheidsdeur is oop. Sy wou dit gaan toemaak toe ‘n man haar met ’n graaf teen haar kop geslaan het. Dit was ‘n baie harde hou wat ligte bloeding op die brein, asook skedelbreuk veroorsaak het. Die inbreker het haar geskop terwyl sy op die vloer gelê het. Die dokter aan diens het gesê indien die hou slegs 2 sentimeter nader aan haar skedel was, sou sy skedelbreuk in die ergste graad opgedoen het. Vervolg bl 2

Pearly-susters wreed aangerand in vakansiehuis Van bl 1
The Revs Per Minute film team visited Gansbaai and Hermanus on a road trip for Avis Southern Africa. The well-known personality, Sasha Martinengo, joined the road trip and they were travelling in a Volkswagen, corporate sponsor of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT). They decided to visit the Trust’s African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary (APSS). They also took a trip on board Dream Catcher with Dyer Island Cruises where they enjoyed the marine wildlife of our Dyer Island ecosystem. Local and uncle to Sasha, Italo Martinego, stopped in for a quick hello to his nephew. From ltr Ronald le Roux, Sasha Martinengo, Brenda du Toit, Jan Sime and Ian Sime.

Die inbreker het Rina kort daarna ook met die graaf teen haar kop geslaan. Sy moes steke kry nadat die ambulans hulle na Hermanus MediClinic geneem het. Altwee is in die hospitaal opgeneem en is Dinsdag, 18 Oktober weer ontslaan. Pearly Beach se Noodhulpkamer het om 03:15 ‘n oproep van die betrokke sekuriteitsfirma ontvang en die personeel het hulle daarheen gehaas. Met hul aankoms daar, was daar soveel bloed op die vloer dat handdoeke gebruik is om die bloed op te suig. Daar was ook bloedstrepe en –spatsels teen die mure en meubels. Linda is van Germiston in Gauteng en het onlangs ‘n chemoterapie-reeks voltooi teen klierkanker. Sy het vir Rina, wat in Bellville woon genooi om saam met haar by Pearly Beach te gaan ontspan. Rina self is ook nie baie gesond nie en ly aan multiple sclerosis. Die derde suster, Denise Schultz van Hermanus, is ook genooi, maar sy het dit van die hand gewys weens ander verpligtinge. Denise sien tans om na haar beseerde en getraumatiseerde susters. Die twee verdagtes is as swart mans tussen die ouder-
domme van 25- en 30 jaar beskryf. Albei is lank en skraal, maar die een is korter as die ander en hulle het handskoene aangehad. Twee selfone, bykans R30 000 se juweliersware en R2 500 in kontant word vermis, asook Rina se handsak met haar identiteitsboekie en bankkaarte. Die aanvallers is nog op vrye voet. Enigiemand wat oor inligting beskik, kan die ondersoekbeampte, konstabel Pieterse van Gansbaai SAPD se Speurtak skakel by 028-3840201. Adjudant-Offisier Vermeulen van die Speurtak doen weer eens ‘n ernstige beroep op inwoners om nie met die aanhoor van onbekende geluide snags in wonings hul kamers sommer net te verlaat nie. Hy het ook gesê dat hierdie tipe van rooftogte gewoonlik vroeg soggens tussen 02:00 en 04:00 plaasvind. Volgens ‘n inwoner van hierdie pragtige, maar afgeleë vakansiedorp, is hulle woedend oor die voorval. Sy vertel dat dit die derde soortgelyke aanval in sowat vyf maande is. Sy sê voorts dat hulle nie snags slaap nie, uit vrees dat inbrekers hul huise sal betree en hulle sal aanrand.

Masakhane kids exposed to nature Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT) has always been involved with local school groups and earlier this year they launched project, “DEEP” (DICT Environmental Education Programme). DEEP envisions that environment education should reach all children before the age of twelve years in order to ensure that the ethos of conservation and respect for nature will become second nature for them. The programme runs for three years so as to monitor and evaluate the impact and growth of each and every individual learner. The aim is to expose these young learners to the field of science and conservation and to help them realize that if they continue
their education, they can do anything they put their minds to. The first ever DEEP camp took place over the weekend of the 7th-9th October with our group of thirteen learners from Masakhane Primary School. Pinkey Ngewu from the Dyer Island Conservation Trust did a recap of the programme and facilitated a variety of marine lessons. The DEEP group also visited Potberg at De Hoop Collection Nature Reserve to learn about the important ecosystems in our area, namely fynbos and marine ecosystems. The second day’s lesson took place at De Hoop Vlei where the group went on a guided walk along the De Hoop vlei which is a Ramsar site and
Koppie Alleen where they did some whale watching. Pinkey also focused on rock pool education and shared information on the animals they looked at, their habits and what makes them special and the kids had some fun making sand animals with
Georgina. The last activity of the day was facilitated by Rebecca. A game of Marine Animals Charades. The camp was the highlight for the kids.

B’Bos erfenishuis op in vlamme ‘n Geskiedkundige erfeniswoning in Baardskeerdersbos, op die hoek van Strandveld- en Kerkstraat op pad na die Strandveld Pub & Grill restaurant, het Woensdag, 12 Oktober 2016 in vlamme opgegaan. Truida Fourie was een van die toeskouers wat emosioneel staan en toekyk het hoe haar geboorte-huis besig is om uit te brand. “Dit was ‘n hartseer
oomblik om na die verterende vlamme te staan en kyk en vele herinneringe het deur my gespoel,” het sy gesê. Die oorsaak van die brand kon nie vasgestel word nie. Die vermoede bestaan dat “Bergies”, wat vroeër deur ‘n werknemer by die winkel opgemerk is, daar oornag het nadat iemand gesien het hulle gaan daar in. Die brand het begin kort nadat

Sy sê dit is die enigste huis wat sy geken het en sy het dit vir die eerste keer ná haar troue met wyle Attie (Witbrood) Fourie verlaat. Sy en Attie het ‘n melkery bedryf, wat beteken dat sy nog al die jare in Baardskeerdersbos woon. Truida se ouers was Pieter (oorlede 1980) en Rina (oorlede 1978) Groenewald. Truida vertel dat haar pa in 1940 daar gebore is en dat die Groenewalds toe al daar gewoon het. Dit kan dus wees dat die huis in die laat 1800’s of vroeë 1900’s gebou is. Truida se pa het die voorste gedeelte van die huis destyds in ‘n winkel omskep en dit as die Groenewald Broers bedryf. Ná sy afsterwe het Truida se oorlede man die winkelgedeelte as ‘n kliniek beskikbaar gestel.
Haar pa het ook reeds voor haar geboorte in 1958 ‘n geboutjie langs die huis opgerig, wat nie saam met die huis gebrand het nie, wat as Baardskeerdersbos se tweede Poskantooragentskap bedryf is - kompleet met handsentrale en al - tot gedurende 1994 toe die Poswese weggedoen het met die meeste agentskappe. Truida sê dit was al die jare ‘n pragtige huis en was gedurende 2004 nog bewoon, maar daarna het verwaarlosing begin intree. In 2005 het sy die geskiedkundige huis aan die huidige eienaar, Nardus Bothma verkoop. Sy bouplanne is deur die Overstrand Munisipaliteit en Erfenis Wes-Kaap goedgekeur om die huis in ‘n gallery en klein koffiewinkel te omskep, maar dit het nooit realiseer nie. Die verwaarlosing van die huis het vererger en “bosslapers” is gereeld daar opgemerk. Vervolg bl 5

Carel van der Merwe, ‘n bekende in Baardskeerdersbos, vertel dat die ou pad na Napier in daardie jare voor die deur van die huis verbygeloop het en dat daardie deel destyds as die "midde-dorp" van Baardskeerdersbos beskou is. Helena Swart, ook ‘n bekende van Baardskeerdersbos, het die Baardskeerdersbos Geskiedenis-dokument van die dorp beskikbaar gestel. Erf No. 41 in die dokument bevat ‘n foto van die huis ter sprake soos in 1938, wat toe reeds verwaarloos was en in die dokument opgeneem is. Dit het gedien as ‘n voorbeeld van die karaktervolle boustyl in die 19de en vroeë 20ste eeu en is as waardevol in die dokument beskryf. Die erfenis-woning in Baardskeerdersbos nadat dit deur ‘n brand vernietig is.

Three years and Scott Harvey (43) and Sarah Tyler (36) rode into Gansbaai on Wednesday, the 13th of October from Cape Agulhas on their two bicycles. Weary from pedaling against the wind but happy to see their friends, Christo and Cathy White from Franskraal, whom they have met in Lamberts Bay. They looked forward to sleep in a bed for a few nights instead of a tiny tent. These two adventurous (perhaps crazy?) people, Scott a Canadian and Sarah an American, stay in Paris, France. They left their home in Paris on the 23rd of August 2013, three years ago, on their cycle journey from Paris through twenty five countries and across Africa to Cape Town. When asked why they did this - they said: “Because we love our bikes and cycling and this was a good excuse to cycle every day for three years!� They started from Paris and the only time that their mode of transport changed was when they took a boat from Turkey to Egypt. They traversed down East Africa and then went across to Namibia and entered South Africa at Pofadder on Saturday the 17th of August 2016. They tell the most amazing stories and have beautiful images of their journey. They once cycled between two herds of elephants when they heard lions roaring in the distance. It happened a couple of times but their was never a reason for any narrow escapes. Continue p 7

30 000 km on two bicycles The journey over three years took so long because they chose not to take a straight route - the purpose was not to get to Cape Town but rather to enjoy the trip. Thus they took all the gravel roads and experienced remote places, never seen by other tourists. They lost count of the number of mountain passes (and that includes the Swartberg pass which they walked as it was too steep to cycle). All along the way the people were helpful and friendly (except for one minor incident but they never felt threatened). Two well-built “Body Builders” were expected – instead a “skinny” couple showed up for the interview. They still use the same bicycles. Scott is on his third set
of tyres and Sarah on her second set. In Lamberts Bay they met Christo and Cathy White, who reside in Franskraal and were invited to come and stay with them when they reached the Overstrand. Along the West Coast they were absolutely blown away by the wild flowers (Sarah reports how people had told them about the flowers and they thought: “Oh really we get flowers in Europe too… but the experience was amazing and nothing in Europe compares”). They also knew about the whales of Hermanus hence their desire to come to the Cape Whale Coast and a whale watching trip was arranged for them by Gansbaai Tourism. They went whale watching on Dream Catcher of Wilfred Chivell,
Scott Harvey and Sarah Tyler were very proud to be at the most Southern point of Africa, Cape Aghulhas with their bicycles. Dyer Island Cruises from Kleinbaai. Both Sarah and Scott couldn’t stop talking about this trip and how it exceeded their dreams - saw whales, sharks, seals and penguins. From Gansbaai they will cycle to Cape Town and then they fly home to Paris at the end of October this year. They say that they will find it hard to adjust to their normal lives, as Scott is a re-

Perlemoen word somtyds afgevat (en as inkomste vir u department verkoop), maar arrestasies en suksesvolle vervolging vind baie selde plaas. Namens die wetsgehoorsame burgers van Groter Gansbaai dring ons nou aan op daadwerklike optrede. Soos hierbo verduidelik, het ons onbetwiste rede om te vrees vir ons lewens, aangesien die toestand tans buite beheer is. SA Blue Flag status for Marine’s Marine Dynamics Shark Tours and sister company Dyer Island Cruises are excited to have represented the Overberg region at the South African Blue Flag launch for the 2016/2017 season. Whale Whisperer was the pilot blue flag boat in South Africa and now we have both vessels, Dream Catcher and Whale Whisperer, Blue Flag certified. This year provided the first opportunity for shark cage diving vessels able to apply for Blue Flag certification and Slashfin is now a proud representative as well. Blue Flag in South Africa is managed by WESSA (Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa). Applications for the prestigious Blue Flag eco-label were reviewed by a rigorous approval process concerning
national and international assessments. It was announced at the annual launch last week that a total of eight sustainable tourism boats, of which all are based in the Western Cape, received Blue Flag status. Responsible Traveller Magazine owner, Tessa Buhrmann, accepted the Blue Flags on behalf of Marine Dynamics and Dyer Island Cruises in a dynamic event held in Kwazulu-Natal. “It was an honour to represent Marine Dynamics and Dyer Island Cruises as, not only are they committed to conservation and research, but as a Fair Trade Tourism certified business they operate with an ethos of having a positive impact on both people and the planet. Vision towards a ‘green’ community Gansbaai Community Farm Food Security Project, was founded on Friday, 14 October 2016 in Gansbaai. The Grootbos Foundation project stemmed from a needs analysis conducted in 2013 where it emerged that 75% of Masakhane and Blompark were in fact food insecure. This is reflective of the national average of 25% of children below the age of six are malnourished. Based on this knowledge, the idea grew to develop a project focusing on assisting and training communities to grow their own food and be more independent. The big vision is to develop a “green” community where everyone is committed to growing their own food and a big thank you to Burmar Civils and Gansbaai Municipality for contributing a site for the project. Training started on the 12th of September 2016 with nine students. The second group started on the 26th of September with
twenty four students. After the initial training students are allocated allotments, which they need to farm for three to six months. After this they will be eligible for a home
garden set up from the Department of Agriculture. South Africa Breweries (SAB) who have committed and supported with a cheque of R128,928. The next training session will be

Fifteen receive tour guide certificates A group of staff members from the Great White House, Marine Dynamics and Dyer Island Cruises recently participated in a tour guiding course. During the week of 6 to 10 June 2016 these individuals attended classes every night after work
and post the training sessions completed a number of activities. The group of proud certificateowners are Anwynn Louw, Belnay van Tonder, Cari du Preez, Carmen Phillips, Celeste Malgas, Clifford Msamuka, Etienne
Roets, Francois Swart, George Mthini, Jailos Mlimo, Kelly Baker, Meredith Thornton, Nuraan Marthinus, Sean van der Linde and Stewart Mavere. On the 4th of August 2016 written and practical assessments took place and finally on Tues-

If only, when GOD smiles and says we are saved, we'd salute him, thank him, and live like those who have just received a gift from the commander in chief. We seldom do that, though. We prefer to get salvation the oldfashioned way: We earn it.
To accept grace is to admit failure, a step we are hesitant to take. We opt to impress GOD with how good we are rather than confessing how great He is. We dizzy ourselves with doctrine. Burden ourselves with rules. Think that GOD will smile on our efforts. He doesn't. GOD's smile is not for the healthy hiker who boasts that he made the journey alone. It is, instead, for the crippled leper who begs God for a back on which to ride. Can you imagine that! GOD loves you and me, sinners, beggars, liars! Start smiling. You are saved by Jesus grace alone. Start showing grace to all the people that cross your path. Give them a smile and let the love of GOD shines through you! That is all you have to do! Prag-komberse kry uiteindelik huise Die wenners van die langverwagte uitgelote komberse was verras en in ekstase met die aankondiging deur Overstrand se voormalige Uitvoerende Burgemeester, Raadsdame Nicolette BothaGuthrie dat Doret Taljaard en die 81-jarige Luise Boeddinghaus die wenners is. Die trekking deur Raadsdame Nicolette het op Donderdag, 29 September 2016 in die Hermanus Biblioteek plaasgevind. Doret Taljaard, die persoonlike assistent van Overstrandse Uitvoerende Burge-
meester, Raadsheer Rudolph Smith, het die kleurvolle, handgemaakte hekelkombers gewen en kon nie haar vreugde in toom hou met die aanhoor daarvan nie. Luise Boeddinghaus was die wenner van ‘n swart en wit kombers en het gesê: “Hierdie kombers gaan baie handig te pas kom vir die koue nagte in die Hemel-enAarde Vallei waar ek woon.” Hierdie projek was een van die laaste liefdadigheidsprojekte wat deur Raadsdame Nicolette aangepak is.
“Dit was vir my ‘n groot eer om uiteindelkik die wenners se kaartjies te trek en die
name aan te kondig,” het sy gesê.

Die volgende dag is hy en sy hengelmaat (Nr 2, want hy is 2e beste) na die Gruis toe. Die nodige sardyn, vars tjokka en hulle lang strandstokke is saam, en het hulle geglo, daar wag ‘n kabeljou of twee en selfs ‘n steenbras op hulle. Ek is selfs gevra om ‘n ordentlike rooster gereed te hou!

Johan Venter takes the crown Overstrand took the pool table crown at the 2016 Better Together Games. Johan Venter from the Overstrand was recently crowned the Pool Table Champion at the 2016 Better Together Games that was held at Boland Park in Worcester on Friday, 14 October. The momentous win means that Johan qualifies to participate in the annual Corporate Games which will be held in Cape Town later this year. His success comes at a time
where the municipality is also in the process of establishing a Municipal Pool Table Club. Overstrand participated in various other codes of sport at the 2016 Better Together Games such as touch rugby, golf, netball, and darts. However, despite their best efforts the netball team only advanced to the quarter finals, while the soccer team were knocked out in the semi-finals. Moreover, the rugby team unfortunately did not fare much better and were side-lined in the early stages of the tournament.
