APRIL
FOCUS:
AARP SMART DRIVER COURSES
Each spring and fall Garden Spot Village connects with a local AARP Smart Driving Instructor to offer a Smart Driving Course and Refresher Course. These AARPsponsored courses help experienced drivers maintain their edge while they are behind the wheel. The instructor of the two-day course, which is typically held from 9am-1pm, includes these lessons:
• Important facts about the effects of medication on driving.
• How to reduce driver distractions.
• How to maintain the proper following distance behind another car.
• Proper use of safety belts, air bags, anti-lock brakes and new technology found in cars today.
• Techniques for handling left turns, right-of-way, and roundabouts.
• Age-related physical changes and how to adjust your driving to compensate.
Tom and Bertha Hawk, Garden Spot Village residents since September 2011, plan to take the course later this month. Tom shared that he and Bertha completed the Smart Driver Course shortly after moving to Garden Spot and took the Refresher Course each time that they were eligible. Tom says, “You would be surprised at what you learn in the course. The instructor provides refreshers on how to make left hand turns at intersections, refreshers on stopping at railroad tracks and blinking yellow lights, as well as how to parallel park. The instructor also said, if you are in a parking lot and pull into a space where you can pull through, it’s perfectly legal to pull through. In fact, it’s recommended because you don’t need to back out when you are ready to leave. Also, if you get a little nervous driving on a four lane highway, don’t worry about the center lanes; move to the right lane and don’t worry about the speed.” AARP often advertises the course saying that, people who complete a course could be eligible for a discount on auto insurance. Tom reports that he and Bertha receive a 5% discount on their auto insurance for completing the $20 course every three years. Tom believes the cost and time invested are well worth the savings.
Learn more at aarp.org.
The courses will be offered the following days:

EMERGENCIES: TIMELY HELP AND ACCURATE INFORMATION ARE CRITICAL
Unexpected events happen to all: falls, illnesses, accidents; they are part of life. Recognizing that fact and taking important preparation steps to be as prepared as possible, are wise choices.
Consider taking the following steps:
• Wearing your GSV Emergency pendant. It won’t help you if left in a drawer or on the nightstand.
• Updating your Emergency Sheets (located in your Master bath medicine cabinet). Current info is essential to staff and/or EMTs assisting during an emergency. Record necessary changes on one copy, drop it off at Social Services. You will receive updated copies via campus mail.
• Keeping a copy of your Advance Directive in the medicine cabinet.
• Sign up for the CATIE Morning Check-In program if you live alone. It is a simple, easy, no-cost way to confirm daily that you are OK. This program has saved lives! A staff member will follow up if you do not check in, making sure you receive assistance if needed. See your social worker for details.

WAYS TO CELEBRATE EARTH DAY WELLNESS: SATURDAY, APRIL 22
Although Earth Day lands on a weekend this year, there’s no reason not to celebrate it all work-week long! Earth Day is an excellent time to learn about how environmental factors affect health and wellness.
• Start a garden: A fun way to get outside and a great source of physical activity!
• Go for a walk: Going outside for a walk once a day is an excellent way to celebrate nature and get you moving. Just 10 minutes in nature can help relieve some stress and improve moods.
• Add plants: Plants are more than just beautiful décor! Indoor plants can reduce stress, anxiety, and fatigue. Research has found that indoor plants also reduce 87% of indoor air pollutants within 24 hours. Adding plants throughout your home will help promote a healthy environment while also boosting wellness.
• Go Green: Recycle more, minimize plastic usage, and use less water. While it might not seem like Earth Day directly correlates to wellness, it’s important to understand how environmental factors can impact a healthy and happy lifestyle. Instead of skipping out on Earth Day this year, celebrate the importance of a healthy outdoor and indoor environment in order to inspire positive changes in your habits.
It’s Humor Month: Start your day with a smile & visit Wellness for a joke of the day!
