April welcomes beautiful blooms and wonderful opportunities to gather with friends at Garden Spot Village. This year, we open our doors to local businesses for the annual Business Expo on Thursday, April 21. Residents and future residents are encouraged to visit our vendors from 10am-2pm, with booths located throughout the Village Square, Main Street and Chapel areas.
Vendor registration fees for this event are directed to the Benevolent Fund, supporting residents who can no longer afford the cost of living expenses.
WELCOME, BARBARA MARTIN! We are delighted to welcome Barbara Martin as our new Associate Director of Development.
Barb began working at Garden Spot Village on March 1, 2022.
She is excited to meet and partner with our residents and staff members as she coordinates events and designs publications for the Development Department.

PLEASE JOIN US ON A SUMMER READING ADVENTURE
Travel from the South to cities of the North and West as we follow three individuals on the journey of a lifetime, from 1910 to 1970 - the years of the Great Migration. Discover the ways that they not only survived, but thrived, despite the many obstacles facing people of color in those days. Author Isabelle Wilkerson narrates their stories with resolute accuracy. Sign up at Resident Services to purchase a copy of the Warmth of Other Suns. Only $10 per book. We invite you to enjoy this book either as a personal reading experience or in a small group. Please indicate at sign-up if you would like to join a small group. Or, please indicate if you have a group with room for one or two more. Our hope is that many will want to share reading experiences with others in a larger gathering after the summer months. It is also our hope that this will be the first of many reading adventures at Garden Spot Village!

INTRODUCING THE GARDEN SPOT VILLAGE KENNEL CLUB “When I moved to Garden Spot Village, I was told that if I wanted to start a club, I just needed to find one person to join me,” says Paulette Moore. “So I found a friend, Janice Ford, and we started a Kennel Club.” Janice and Paulette worked closely with Garden Spot Village administration to secure space and establish guidelines for a Bark Park in the Sycamore Springs neighborhood. The fenced space provides an opportunity for dogs owned by Garden Spot Village residents to run unleashed. The ladies carefully researched rules for local dog parks, best practices and recommendations from the American Kennel Club, Animal Law Information and Humane Society of America. They also worked with a local boarding-kennel owner to get real-world insight. Janice says, “This is a new venture and we are taking a view that will protect our buddies and our residents without adding additional burden to the staff at Garden Spot Village. We developed our guidelines with these objectives in mind.” Any Garden Spot Village resident with a dog can join the Kennel Club. Fees will be waived for the first year, but starting in 2023, there will be nominal fees to cover upkeep, upgrades and maintenance of the Bark Park. At the end of the year, surplus funds will be donated to the Garden Spot Village Benevolent Fund. The Bark Park, which will be available in early April 2022, will include benches and mulched corners to make mowing and trimming easier for Campus Services. In addition, the Bark Park will be a “use-at-your-own risk” space and owners will be liable for any injury or damage caused by their dog. To join the Kennel Club or learn more, email kennelclub@gardenspotvillage.net. RULES FOR THE BARK PARK INCLUDE:
• Dogs must be healthy, properly licensed and with up-to-date vaccinations (including rabies, distemper and Bordetella).
• Open one gate at a time in the double-gated area. Open and close the outer gate, unleash your dog and enter the off-leash area. • Always have your leash in hand, dog in sight and under control; do not leave your dog unattended.
• Clean up after your dog. Supply your own clean-up bags and take them with you for proper disposal. • Dogs 50 pounds and under are allowed in the park at any time; dogs larger than 50 pounds are permitted when the park is not being used by smaller dogs.
• If your dog displays aggression toward people or other dogs, please remove them from the dog park. • Dogs must be at least four months old; dogs in heat are not permitted.

CONNECTIONS
A new opportunity coming soon!
APRIL 12 – MAY 17, TUESDAY, 3-4:30pm Do you desire to connect with residents you do not yet know or get to know acquaintances better? If so, Connections is for you! One of the best ways to connect in a meaningful way is to have the opportunity to share important aspects of your life stories. During this time together we will form groups of 6–8 people who will meet for an hour to an hour and a half each week for 6 weeks (Tuesday afternoons, April 12 – May 17). Each week we will have a brief presentation by a resident or a staff member to prime the pump for discussion, and we will also take turns sharing some aspects of our own life stories. We will learn helpful ways to share our life stories and helpful ways to respond to others’ stories. GSV Social Services and Chaplaincy departments are coming together to create this opportunity. Sign up at Resident Services by Friday, April 8. Designate which group you prefer: ladies’ group, men’s group, mixed group, or couples’ group.

VO LU N T E E R S E RV I C E S
Daryl Groff, Director of Volunteer Services
SHARING GIFTS & HELPING OTHERS “When I can help someone—and not just do something for someone—if I can enable them to do it for themselves, that is so rewarding,” says Charley Hentz, Garden Spot Village resident since October 2013. Charley, a retired math and science teacher, finds great satisfaction in teaching. This desire to help others shines through his volunteer roles at Garden Spot Village.
Once a month, Charley drives the shuttle to Yoder’s Country Market. He picks up the keys and the 14-passenger bus, and starts his trip through the community, stopping first at the South Entrance of the Village Square Apartments, then Gardens East, the Apartment Suites Lobby, and finally, the Village Square Main Entrance. He picks up shoppers and transports them to the Yoder’s shopping complex. He makes his first drop at Yoder’s, then heads to the Fulton Bank, dropping off the riders who have transactions to complete. He waits outside, then transports his passengers to Yoder’s for a quick shopping trip. He delights in taking the extra step, helping people on and off the bus, loading and unloading their groceries and generally making their trip as enjoyable as possible. Charley notes that residents who take advantage of the shopping shuttle do so because they no longer have a car or are no longer able to drive. The weekly shuttle allows them to do their own shopping, rather than relying on family or friends to take them or to pick up groceries for them. He has regular riders who ride along each time he drives the bus. Offering his neighbors the freedom to go to the grocery store means a lot to Charley. “Residents are so appreciative to have someone take them to the store. It is so rewarding to be able to help them in that way,” Charley says. In addition to the shopping shuttle, Charley volunteers through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and the Technology Assistance Group (TAG). He also works in the Chapel sound booth and provides tech support for movies shown in the Theater. He is very involved in the Wood Shop and the Train Room, as well.
Charley encourages others to join the pool of volunteer shuttle drivers. “You don’t need a special license, and the bus is not hard to drive.” He appreciates the opportunity to connect with others in his community. Plus, he says, “In less than two hours, you are already back from the trip.” Volunteer Services coordinates the weekly shuttles to Yoder’s on Thursdays at 1pm and Shady Maple on the second Tuesday of each month. To volunteer as a shuttle driver, contact Daryl Groff, director of Volunteer Services, at (6204).

APRIL IS NATIONAL MOVE MORE MONTH: GET UP AND GO! Created by the American Heart Association as a way to help improve the health of Americans everywhere, National Move More Month encourages us to walk 10,000 steps- or even better, 20 minutes of aerobic exercise daily.
THE HISTORY OF NATIONAL MOVE MORE MONTH
The benefits of living an active lifestyle have been known since antiquity. Cicero said, “It is exercise alone that supports the spirits, and keeps the mind in vigor.” The Romans prized physical fitness, especially among their well-trained armies. Since then, exercise has evolved. This month is simply embracing the foundations that movement and living an active lifestyle are key components to being a healthier person. In the 50s, a study of bus conductors versus bus drivers who didn’t have additional exercise regimens beyond work found that conductors (who are much more active than the sedentary drivers) suffered less from heart disease and other health conditions. Regardless of whether you choose the ancient art of hurling a discus or modern weightlifting and calisthenics, getting out and moving more during the month of April is what’s important – even if it’s just walking for 30 MINUTES every day.
WELLNESS HIGHLIGHTS AQUA ARTHRITIS WITH JOANNE Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:30pm This class is designed for people with Arthritis or limited movement in order to help manage symptoms, maintain independence and enjoy life through gentle activity that works range of motion and strengthens muscles.
