NEw TIMES, NEw MAGAZINE Probably one of the most important events in the 90-year history of the Club Nàutic de Ciutadella was the installation of berths that the Club itself has been managing since last year. Of course, I haven’t witnessed everything that the Club has experienced since its conception, but it’s true that few events have been as historic as the Club welcoming in nautical tourism. Tourism has opened up the Club to an entire continent. And this lays down a new challenge, which entails satisfying the demands of new markets. They may be aplenty and very important, but one prime example is this magazine and its duty to inform. Let me explain. When we talk about communication, it’s as important as it is basic to know what we want to say and who we should be saying it to. And now, when the readership has changed, the communication process needs at very least to be reviewed. This is where we come in. Our company, GBC Comunicación, has reconceived this magazine to adapt it to a new and broader audience, beyond just Club members. But don’t worry, there aren’t too many changes and they’re all for the better. The review of Club news is and always will be important, given its role in society, but we also want to offer contents that are interesting for visitors so that through this magazine they can learn more about Menorca.

Un Club que sigue muy vivo 90 años después de su fundación Estimados amigos, En nombre de la Junta Directiva del Club Nàutic Ciutadella que tengo el honor de presidir es para mí un placer el presentar esta nueva publicación dirigida no solamente a nuestros socios, sino a todas las personas que escogen nuestro puerto como punto de recalada. Nos gustaría daros a conocer las instalaciones y servicios de nuestro club, deseando que en el encontréis el ambiente agradable y cordial por el que todos trabajamos, disfrutéis de vuestra estancia entre nosotros y que durante la misma, nuestro Club sea el vuestro. El Club Nàutic Ciutadella nació de la ilusión de un grupo de personas que el 12 de Abril de 1923 constituyeron un club deportivo y social con el objetivo de fomentar el deporte y la cultura. Hoy, con 90 años de historia a nuestras espaldas podemos presumir de continuar siendo un club vivo, tanto en lo deportivo como en lo social. Nuestra historia se escribe con infinidad de nombres que han contribuido a la grandeza del club con sus gestas deportivas y la valentía de tantas y tantas personas que con dedicación y esfuerzo han aportado su granito de arena para conseguir lo que hoy es el C.N.C. PROMOTING OUR ISLAND As President of the Consell Insular de Menorca, it is a great honour to be writing in this year’s edition of the Club Nàutic de Ciutadella magazine, given the major social and sporting role the Club plays in the town of Ciutadella and, even more so, when 2013 marks the ninetieth anniversary of its creation. The fact that not only does this magazine provide information about the yachting world in Ciutadella, but also different aspects of the town for those who visit us in the summer, is clear proof of the Club’s commitment to promoting our island. It is a shared task between the public authorities and the social entities in Menorca to encourage as many activities as possible to stimulate the economy of Ciutadella and the island as a whole. In this sense, I would like to congratulate the Club Nàutic de Ciutadella for having always combined its social and sporting role with this economic stimulation. All that remains is for me to wish this magazine a long future, as this will mean that the Club Nàutic de Ciutadella will continue to play a vital role in the life of this town.

Salutació en el 90è aniversari A petició del Club Nàutic de la nostra ciutat, em plau d’adreçar a socis i directius una salutació municipal afectuosa. Vull, però, que es faci extensiva a tots els transeünts i gent de la mar que, en un moment o altre al llarg de l'any, tenen en el club el seu referent mariner d'acollida i d'amistat. Des d'un punt de vista de l'historial, el Club Nàutic troba en l'any 2013 una data particularment important: es compleix el 90è aniversari d'ençà de la seva fundació. El fet no pot ser més important i més significatiu, perquè fa que prenguem consciència del prestigi de l'entitat, situada ja en el rang dels clubs de mar de major història de Menorca. Que sigui enhorabona. És evident que aquests noranta anys, ja de per sí, posen al Club Nàutic en un paper de molt de relleu a l'hora d'haver de parlar sobre el nostre port, les seves funcions socials, esportives i econòmiques. Sobretot ara, en que ens trobam en una hora crucial de disseny, ordenació i definició estratègica en el context de l'economia nàutica de les Illes Balears, a la vegada en un context de màxima importància del negoci turístic en el Mediterrani occidental. Com a batle de Ciutadella, esper que les autoritats dirigents del Club Nàutic no deixin, com fins aquí han fet, d'actuar com a gran referent d'opinió, i com a ens de criteri solvent a l'hora de contemplar les polítiques que més convenen al món marítim en general. 90TH ANNIVERSARY GREETING Upon invitation from our town’s Club Nàutic, it is my honour to offer all the members and directors a warm greeting from the mayor’s office. I would also like it to reach all the visitors and yachtsmen who at some point in the year enjoy the warm welcome and friendship of the Club. From a historic point of view, 2013 is a particularly important year for the Club Nàutic – it is celebrating its ninetieth anniversary. This is a truly significant event as it makes us realise the prestige the Club has built up over the years, now one of the oldest yacht clubs in Menorca. Congratulations!

It is clear that these ninety years have led to the Club Nàutic playing a major role in our port and its social, sporting and economic functions. Even more so now, as we are at a crucial moment regarding the design, planning and strategic definition of nautical tourism in the Balearic Islands, and on the wider scale of tourism in the Western Mediterranean. As mayor of Ciutadella, I hope that the directors of the Club Nàutic continue to act as a benchmark for public opinion when considering the policies that are best for the maritime world. And let’s not forget that what is good for the port is good for Ciutadella.

e all have a dream, said Toni Pons, heart and soul of the ‘Crossing the Atlantic’ project. And this dream came true after securing victory in the only amateur regatta that sets sail from Spain and crosses the Atlantic to the Caribbean. The challenge did not just involve sailing
the 2,800 miles from Lanzarote to the island of Martinique, but also the further 1,200 miles from Ciutadella de Menorca to the starting line, plus the endless hours of preparing the boat to achieve the transatlantic dream. Everything began in Ciutadella after a talk given by Enrique Curt, Director of the Gran Prix del Atlántico regatta, at the Club Nàutic de Ciutadella in April 2011. This contact helped us rise to the challenge of sailing the Atlantic and also gave us vital advice about how to make headway with this major idea. From that day on, we started to outline the project, first thinking about making the crossing in my current boat, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 32i, and then studying the preparation needed and the tougher task of finding sponsors who might be interested in the project. After a few difficult months, when
things were in the air about whether we could make the crossing or not, in June 2011 we presented the project at the Jeanneau shipyard and received their unconditional support for the regatta, but with the promise of a brand new boat designed especially for offshore racing. This new vessel was to be a Jeanneau Sun Fast 3200 that would arrive in Menorca in November 2011, just two months before the regatta was to set sail from Marina Rubicón in Lanzarote on 8th January 2012. With this fantastic backing from Jeanneau, things quickly took off and more and more companies chose to support the project. Garmin supplied the essential electronic equipment for such an event, Quantum gave technical support regarding the sails, International provided paint for the hull (experimental paints that worked excellently), the

Thank you to each and every one of you. Choosing the crew was another difficult task. Lots of people wanted to take part

We put together two crews, the first to take the boat from Ciutadella to Lanzarote (my father Miguel Pons, Alex "Cubano", Oscar and me) and the second team for the crossing (Francisco Gil, my brother Josep Pons, Toni Cavaller and me). We all loved the project and how it was developing, and we worked together on all the jobs in preparation for the big event. All our families were fully behind the

project from day one up to the departure from Lanzarote and of course our arrival in Martinique. Vital support as it wouldn’t have been possible to do it without them. After setting sail from Lanzarote on 8th January, the fifteen-day weather forecasts were very promising, with prevailing winds (trade winds) throughout the entire crossing, which bode very well for us making it in just 16 days in such a small boat (only 9.70m LOA). From the start, five of us led the fleet taking very similar
routes, seeking out southerly winds and avoiding the shortest distance, which in this case was not the fastest. Crew shifts on board "Frágil" were strictly respected. Material was reviewed regularly, meal sittings and cleaning duties were adhered to and the race strategy was perfectly planned out. Only one small incident on the eighth night whilst manoeuvring in the pitch black at 30 knots reminded us exactly where we were and the precautions to bear in mind when in the middle of the vast Atlantic Ocean.

After 16 intense days of sailing and living every moment to the full, the island of Martinique appeared ahead of us in the early hours. The feeling was slightly strange: our dream of crossing the Atlantic had been achieved but the moment was also tinged with sadness as the adventure was nearing the end. Se estrena la Regata Sitges-Ciutadella SITGES-CIUTADELLA REGATTA LAUNCHED
El 15 de junio, en plena celebración de las fiestas más emblemáticas de Ciutadella, se llevó a término la I Regata Sitges – Ciutadella. En total, 31 embarcaciones zarparon puntualmente del puerto catalán a las 16h recorriendo hasta la mañana siguiente las 118 millas que les separaba de Ciutadella. La falta de viento fue un destacado de la jornada que obligó la retirada de varias embarcaciones. Los ganadores de la prueba fueron, en primer lugar, ATRIA, de Joan Vilafranca del C.N. Ciutadella; segundo, XICATXECA, de Toni Pons del C.N. Ciutadella; tercero, DON’T ASK, del R.C.N. Barcelona. Todos ellos recibieron su galardón el 17 de junio, Dia des Bé, de manos de autoridades locales de Ciutadella y Sitges. La regata Sitges-Ciutadella, como regata de altura, era un proyecto deseado y que ha sido posible gracias a la reciente reordenación del Port de Ciutadella.

El viento se alió en contra de la Regata Interclubs wIND FRUSTRATES INTERCLUBS REGATTA El pasado 12 de mayo, más de 30 embarcaciones provenientes de Menorca y Mallorca, se dieron cita en la tradicional regata Interclubs. Tras dos horas de espera en la bahía de poniente, el viento no superaba los dos o tres nudos, lo que imposibilitó la disputa de la prueba. Sin embargo, nada impidió que el clima festivo y de regata se trasladase al Moll de la Trona donde el CNC ofreció una barbacoa y refrigerios, e incluso un grupo de música animó la noche hasta bien entrada la madrugada.

Estos son: Vine a Navegar, Escola d’Estiu y Escola d’Hivern. El primero está organizado por la Direcció General d’Esports, Consell Insular de Menorca, la Federació Balear de Vela y los clubes náuticos de Menorca y está dirigido a los alumnos de educación secundaria. En el CNC se cubrieron 78 plazas, cifra jamás tan elevada como en esta ocasión. Por su parte, l’Escola d’Estiu reunió 165 alumnos entre 15 y 17 años, en 4 cursillos de iniciación al Optimist. La inscripción a estos cursillos tampoco había sido jamás tan alta. Por último, l’Escola d’Hivern, acogió a 44 alumnos divididos en dos secciones según edades y cualidades correspondiendo a los grupos de Óptimist y Láser.

Antiguos regatistas crean en Menorca la plataforma “I love Snipe Class” FORMER REGATTA SAILORS LAUNCH “I LOVE SNIPE CLASS” GROUP IN MENORCA Un grupo de antiguos regatistas de la mítica clase Snipe, junto al actual Campeón de España Jordi Triay, se han propuesto recuperar esta mítica clase en la isla de Menorca. Para ello, se ha creado una plataforma llamada “I Love Snipe Class” en la red social Facebook, que ha creado una gran expectación entre antiguos regatistas, profesionales y amateurs de otras clases. Con motivo de la campaña, el 8 de diciembre se celebró un acto de presentación en el CNC, en el que todos los regatistas pudieron navegar con un snipe de la regatista Helena Calzas, una de las tres embarcaciones que quedan en la isla de la antigua “armada invencible”. El evento, también estuvo apoyado por las empresas Cervesa Illa, Queso Coinga y El Paladar. En la actualidad no existen competiciones de esta clase en Menorca, y tan sólo tres barcos en desuso y dos tripulaciones que compiten a escala nacional e internacional.

>>> A group of former regatta sailors from the mythical Snipe Class and the current Spanish champion Jordi Triay have decided to revive this legendary class in Menorca by creating a Facebook group called “I Love Snipe Class”, which has already aroused much interest amongst ex-sailors, professionals and amateurs from other classes. As part of the campaign, a presentation was held on 8th December at the CNC, during which guests were able to sail on yachtswoman Helena Calzas’ own Snipe, one of the three remaining boats in Menorca from the so-called “unbeatable armada”. The event was sponsored by Cervesa Illa, Queso Coinga and Paladar. Currently no Snipe competitions are held in Menorca, with only three unused boats on the island and two crews that compete on a national and international level.

Nuevos cursos de formación para jóvenes regatistas NEw TRAINING COURSES FOR YOUNG SAILORS
Además de los cursos de iniciación y perfeccionamiento, el CNC ofrece un nuevo peldaño en la formación de jóvenes regatistas que comprende los equipos de regatas. El objetivo de este es apoyar y dar seguimiento a los regatistas del Club en su progresión en el deporte de la vela. Para ello, la duración es anual y se establecen calendarios de trabajo para las sesiones de entrenamiento y competiciones. En 2012 el equipo de regatas de Optimist se compuso por 10 regatistas tutelados por Toni Mascaró. El equipo de

Tal situación destacó al Atria, al Barcosdealquiler.com y al Chica Txeca, pero no fue hasta el final donde, en una apretada llegada, el Chica Txeca abrió el spinnaker para adelantar al Barcosdealquiler.com. Y el trofeo Centre Nàutic se quedaría en manos del Chica Txeca.

Called the Trofeo Centre Nàutic Ciutadella, this trophy race was fraught with difficulty, with rough seas caused by the previous week’s 18-knot Poniente-Mistral winds making sailing pretty complicated. So much so that several boats lost sight of the buoy and ended up sailing right past it and losing their lead. This happened to Atria, Barcosdealquiler.com and Chica Txeca, but it wasn’t until the tightly-fought home run that Chica Txeca flew the spinnaker and overtook Barcosdealquiler.com, thus claiming the winners trophy.

La sección de submarinismo completa su calendario de actividades DEEP-SEA DIVING DIVISION BOASTS FULL ACTIVITY CALENDAR Más allá de la colaboración arqueológica, la sección de submarinismo del CNC dispone de un completo calendario de actividades dirigidas a los socios del club. Por una parte, organiza salidas semanales que se concretan los sábados por la mañana, en invierno, y los miércoles por la tarde y sábados durante mañana y tarde, en verano. Para ellas, cada salida del calendario tiene un nivel preestablecido para los buceadores interesados en la actividad y tan sólo hace falta ser socio del club y disponer de la titulación y seguros necesarios. Para esta actividad, es remarcable el esfuerzo realizado por el CNC, que ha hecho un importante esfuerzo en dotar las embarcaciones de material de salvamento y seguridad. Otra actividad que se enmarca dentro de esta sección es la fotografía submarina, en la que algunos de sus miembros publican sus fotos en la red. Y, por último, son destacables los trabajos de limpieza del fondo marino que organiza el club, en pro de un valor principal: la conservación del medio subacuático.

El pasado 7 de julio se disputó la primera manga del Campeonato de Pesca de Altura, patrocinado por Maribel. Sin embargo, la segunda y con la que concluiría la prueba, no se pudo celebrar debido a las causas meteorológicas adversas. En este sentido, se dio por cerrada esta edición del campeonato con tan sólo una manga disputada. En términos de clasificación, Miguel Moll de la embarcación “Lusa” y con un peso total de 21,400 kg., se llevaría el primer puesto, seguido por Joan Torres del “Antamar” con 19,200 kg. y Bartolomé Carrasco, del “Maribel Mar”, con 17,200 kg. La pieza mayor la capturó la embarcación “Duneni”, de la que José Gomila es patrón.

Gerardo Pons se hace con el Campeonato de Menorca de Pesca Submarina 2012 GERARDO PONS wINS 2012 MENORCAN UNDERwATER FISHING CHAMPIONSHIP En 2012, el Club Nàutic de Ciutadella llevó la organización de la primera y tercera mangas del Campeonato de Menorca 2012, disputado entre Ciutadella y Maó, y que contó con 15 pescadores inscritos. El 17 de marzo se disputó la primera manga en Ciutadella, llevándose a cabo la pesca en la zona de Punta Nati – Cap Farragut. Al final del día, se obtuvo poco pescado existiendo pocas diferencias entre los sacos de los 6 primeros clasificados. El 14 de abril, se llevó a cabo la tercera y definitiva manga que daría como resultado el ganador del campeonato. Esta vez, debido a la zona de pesca y a la fecha del año, se auguraban mejores resultados que en la primera manga, con que cualquier participante podía aspirar al título. No obstante, fue Gerardo Pons Ginard con una gran pescada en variedad y tamaño el que se llevó la victoria de la prueba y, a posteriori, el campeonato. En la general, le siguieron Avelino Sans Mercadal, que en la prueba sacó casi 30 piezas y Carlos Pérez Vela, con un mero de 9 kg., un dentón de casi 8 kg. y pocas piezas más. El CNC sirvió un picoteo finalizado el pesaje y procedió a la entrega de trofeos que fueron entregados por Tolo Carrasco, Presidente del Club y el responsable de la sección de pesca submarina, Quico Camps.

sea lovers in order to develop water sports and social life in the town. Its initial statutes spoke of “a recreational and yacht club aimed at promoting nautical sports and life on the sea”. Juan Melià Pons (1923-28) was its first chairman and in the fledgling years the Club focussed its attention on fishing and swimming competitions. Other sports arrived later, such as sailing (in the early 1950s), which today is a true symbol of the Club. The first ever reference to sailing actually dates back to 1946, after seven dark years for the Club. To bring this troubled period to an end, a

regatta was organised with Snipes from Maó, followed by an open-air festival and a gala dinner. Such was the interest in this sport that in 1947 the Club published plans to build two-person Snipes and kayaks, which sparked the formation of the so-called “Snipe Flotilla Nº 47” that enjoyed so much fame and success. Nevertheless, swimming was the most popular sport in the early days of the CNC. Sito Torres, Hilario Allés, Bartolomé Català and Francisco Domingo are just some of the famous swimmers that came out of the Club. However, their well-deserved ac-
hievements (Balearic champions and runners-up) were of even greater calibre when you consider that they would train in the waters of the port due to the lack of a swimming pool. It is said that just a few days before the Balearic Championships they practised their first turns in a reservoir in Ciutadella. The need for a proper swimming pool was always being underlined and even made local news over time, due to the success of the Club’s swimmers. The swimming division became international news in 1968 following the organisation of the first ever swim
from Mallorca to Menorca, with contestants including the British swimmers Kendal, Mellor and McIntyre. A major sporting trial was to take place, but also a long one as the best time recorded was in excess of 16 hours. The hard work of the first few chairmen in the field of sports aroused enthusiasm amongst the town’s young people for water sports, in particular sailing. The Almirante Farragut Trophy enjoyed considerable prestige whilst interest in cruiser sailing also grew, thanks to the efforts of the Club in staging many events over the years: the 1975 Snipe Spanish Cup,

the 1977 Snipe Spanish Championship, the 1978 Optimist Spanish Cup, the 1980 Snipe Junior World Championship, the Mediterranean Cruiser Spanish Championship and the Optimist Spanish Championship in 1981, the 1986 Cruiser Spanish Cup, the 1990 Optimist Spanish Cup, the 1993 Optimist World Championship, the 1996 Optimist Spanish Cup, and the 2012 Platu 25 Spanish Cup. These efforts also involved coaching high-level athletes who have made the Club Nàutic de Ciutadella worthy of national and international fame.
Other sports also gained importance at the Club, which today boasts divisions covering sailing, dinghy sailing, recreational fishing, underwater fishing and – the most recent – canoeing. ONGOING REFORMS The non-stop growth of the Club meant that many times it relocated to bigger and better facilities. Prior to the current building, up to six headquarters or extensions are recorded. The first rumours of the construction of new premises adapted to the demands of the time date back to early 1962, when news leaked of a
possible new building on Moll Nou, just next to the berths. However, it wasn’t until late 1963 when the works were approved and the plans for the new centre were made public. Following the works, the long-awaited headquarters were finally opened on 18th July 1965, coinciding with the Virgen del Carmen festival. Since then, there have been many ways in which the Club has adapted to the needs of the boats: purchase of cranes, extensions, storage rooms, new staff, etc. In 2007, the number of berths was increased thanks to the concession from Ports de Balears for
the management of 90 berths in Cala’n Busquets. However, the most ambitious reform was in 2011 with the redesign of the inner harbour of the port of Ciutadella, which led to the creation of 106 berths for yachts up to twelve metres in length, and the redesign of 53 metres of berthage for small fishing boats. The seven pontoons now mean the Club is open to visiting yachts too, which will definitely shape the Club’s future. What’s more, he holds the honour of being the longest-serving member of the Club Nàutic de Ciutadella and was even chairman between 1970 and 1976. - Where does your love for the sea come from? - From very young. I followed in my father’s footsteps. I have always liked swimming and sport in general. As a child at school, and thanks to the insistence of my teacher, I took part in lots of sports, such as gymnastics and boxing. As an anecdote, I remember one afternoon in boxing class receiving a strong right-hand punch and I’m totally convinced that is the cause of my slight deafness. - How did you get into sailing? - My first girlfriend’s father had what we called a “tèquina” (small homemade boat) and we used to go out to Es Castellar (Sa Caleta). So I could say that from the age of 20 to age of 70 I sailed by myself. Now I go with my children.

- What do you most like about sailing? - The direct contact with the sea and with nature, and the freedom it gives you. For example, with a seven-metre boat I’ve done long crossings to Roses and Monte Carlo and I’ve sailed around Menorca over 50 times. The last time was this summer. - Any bad memories? - On a crossing from Mallorca to Ibiza, having planned the route manually, I remember that the milometer said we were arriving but we never did. That said, my worst memory was the mini-tsunami of 1984. I’d experienced many but never one like that one. I remember how “Ciudadela”, moored ahead of “El Tritón”, was rolling about and once the water level was back to normal, how she straightened back up. That said, they are isolated phenomena that have always existed. - Which do you prefer: sailing boat or motor? - No two boats are the same, that’s what I like so much. For long distances I prefer sailboats, but for fishing and recreation, motorboats. - How did you become chairman? - (Grins). In 1970, wow! I remember they were troubled times. When I became chairman there was a dispute between the Snipe division and the management, which had led to a massive migration to the Club Marítimo Mahón. Once the waters had calmed, I managed to get them back. That’s how I started out. - What was the CNC like in the 1970s? - The Club was basically a dance hall; every Saturday there’d be dancing. It was our source of income and also helped us to attract new members. Some showbiz people would come along, such as Mario Conde. We used to have a great time! - How has the CNC changed? - The berths used to be managed by the port authority, but now the Club manages them. Whilst beforehand the members joined practically out of duty, now they join because of their interest in yachting. - And have the activities changed? - Many of the activities held are still the same as before, from the comber fish contest, which used to be called the Anzuelo de Oro, to the offshore fishing tournaments. Recently new divisions have appeared, such as canoeing. - How do you see the Club’s future? - The current situation of the Club Nàutic is very good. Its future involves the self-management working well and there being consensus between the majority of members and reception [restaurant]. - Do you think there should be more focus on yachting in Ciutadella? - We live facing the sea, and we should take advantage of that immense privilege. The future of Ciutadella involves focussing more on the sea.

The immense fleet featured six boats from Menorca, as well as Mar de Frades, the 2012 World Championship runner-up. The official measurements were carried out the day before and during the morning of the first day. One boat was clear favourite from the very start, namely Mar de Frades, and unsurprisingly ended up winner of

the competition. The Cup was held over three days and included nine races: three on the Friday, four on the Saturday and two on the Sunday. The first race on the Friday was quite eventful, as skippers Miguel Pons, on Miki, and Antonio Cavaller, on Barcosdealquiler.com, collided on the first close haul. Pons’ boat came off worse due to a broken mast, but Cavaller’s boat didn’t manage to complete the trial. And this was not the only incident, as Ponsanglada.com, skippered by Pedro Pons, broke her spinnaker. At the end of the first race, Mar de Frades was top of the leader board, followed by Chica Txeca and Ponsanglada.com. CHANGEABLE WINDS The second and third races were marred by the arrival of showers and rolling winds

The second day of competition was delayed by an hour and a half due to a rainstorm in Ciutadella that whipped up a sea mist. Once it had cleared, nothing was to stop the four scheduled races taking place. However, these were not free from incidents and surprises due to irregular winds on the course. This became even more apparent in the first race when an unexpected roll left three boats in the lurch, one of them being
Mar de Frades. With an intelligent reading of this roll, Barcosdealquiler.com took advantage of these conditions. Throughout the whole day, Mar de Frades recorded the best results, with a third, two firsts and a second, whilst Chica Txeca, who would later come second overall, notched up two seconds, a fourth and a sixth. And if changeable winds were talk of the second day, the third day was marked by southwest winds in excess of
22 knots and crashing waves that made the boats suffer. Chica Txeca, hoping for mistakes from the leader, proved incapable of reaching an unmatchable Mar de Frades. With all the races over, Mar de Frades took the Cup back to Galicia with 19 points, followed by Chica Txeca, with 23 points, and Barcosdealquiler.com with 29.99 points. LONG-AWAITED VICTORY With a superiority that was clear from the first day, Mar
de Frades deservedly sailed to victory in the Spanish Platu 25 Cup. The Galicians can finally add this title, which had previously eluded them, to their four Spanish Championships and World Platu 25 runners-up trophies.

Below are the results of the different regattas they took part in: SANT ANTONI TROPHY Coinciding with the Sant Antoni festivals, the CNC staged the Sant Antoni Optimist and Laser Trophy in which almost 70 Menorcan sailors took part. It was held over 5 legs with variable breezes and choppy seas that complicated the trials. The winners were Rubén García, from the Club Marítimo de Mahón (CMM) in Radial; Ramiro Foguet from the CMM in Laser 4.7; Pere Ponsetí from the CNC in Optimist and Pepe de Sintas from the CNC in Optimist Beginners. SEBASTIÀ GORDI MEMORIAL TROPHY This Trophy gathered together all Optimist sailors in Menorca, as it is a qualifier for the Menorcan team in the regional championships. Of the three scheduled legs, only one full race took place as the second was ca-
lled off because of a lack of wind and on the Sunday a violent hailstorm and cold snap took the young sailors by surprise, meaning that very few were able to finish the race. The joint effort of the organisers, directors, Club members and a fishing boat that gave refuge meant that all the boats were able to arrive safely back to dry land. The winner in the Optimist class was Enric Pons from the CNVC, and in Optimist Beginners, Pepe de Sintas from the CNC. FARRAGUT TROPHY The CNC has the honour of staging the classic Farragut Trophy, which in 2012 reached its 56th edition, clearly proving the maritime tradition of Ciutadella. This event combines Cruisers and Platu 25s with Optimists and Lasers. 32 participants from the island took part in the first of these classes, whilst a further 18 were in the Laser class, divided into three categories. Racing took place in winds averaging 10 knots with N and NE gusts and a calm sea, which made sailing easier. The winners were: in Optimist, Pere Ponsetí
OTHER COMPETITIONS Besides the competitions organised by the Club Nàutic de Ciutadella, our sailors had the chance to take part in other regattas. In Menorca they competed in all the races on the official calendar, as well as in other events. The Menorca Championship wasn’t held because of inclement weather, so the winner came from the two regattas that count towards the title, it eventually being Pere Ponsetí from the CNC. Ten Club sailors took part in nine trials of the Consell Insular de Menorca Grand Prix, with the overall winner also being Pere Ponsetí . As for the other islands, in Mallorca CNC sailors participated in the Queen’s Trophy in Portixol, the Bufete Frau Trophy in Arenal, the Jordi Calafat Trophy, the Interhotel Trophy in Portocolom and the prestigious Ciutat de Palma Trophy. In Ibiza, the Club’s dinghy sailors travelled to Santa Eulalia where Lluís de Moner came third in a new class, the Open BIC. Following the regional qualifiers for the Balearic team, Pere Ponsetí was crowned best under-13 and came ninth overall. In the national championships, he competed in the Spanish Cup in Alicante, where he finished 57th, and in the Spanish Championship in Cambrils, taking 51st place. Other names to look out for are Belén Gomila, Nando Sebastián and Javier Barrera, who all went up to level 1 in Portocolom, with both Sebastián and Barrera accompanying Ponsetí in the regional trials. Menorca is no exception and neither are its waters, where an entire material legacy is hidden on the seabed and is today being researched.

In winter 2009, a group of divers from the Club Nàutic de Ciutadella deep-sea diving division felt the urge to contribute something extra to their weekend dives. This led them to contact the Friends of the Museum of Menorca Association, which since 1996 has been carrying out underwater archaeological surveys along the Menorcan coastline in order to draw up an underwater archaeological map of the Ciutadella area. This study forms part of a Consell Insular de Menorca research project which sets out to catalogue all the underwater archaeological remains in the island.

All began in 1996 with the launch of the Friends of the Museum of Menorca Association, which thanks to the altruistic work of its volunteers has managed to locate over 300 points of interest with remains from ancient cultures during their time in Menorca. Thanks to the agreement signed in 2009 with the CNC deep-sea diving division, the Club provides volunteer divers and infrastructure, in particular a 12-seater RIB with sufficient range to reach any part of the Menorcan coastline. As a result of this study, dives have taken place in around 30 locations and have unearthed material remains such as ceramic pots, iron anchors, amphorae for transporting oil, etc., the oldest of which date back to the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. The Club’s deep-sea diving division is well established, and this means there are many people interested in the group’s work and the research project. At any given time, at least 8 volunteers are helping out. For the group, everything begins by studying maps (currents, place names and even comments from fishermen or other divers) so they can plan out which route to take. Once they reach the area, the dive is documented by the Consell de Menorca to make an inventory of all the findings and automatically protect them against pillaging. This archaeological research is possible thanks to the volunteer archaeologists and divers who dedicate their free time to working on the archaeological map projects, and also the financial support given by the Consell Insular de Menorca to this activity. This allows for dives from March to December each year, and in the colder months visits to different museums on the island and other activities connected to the research. Although there may not be many dives held, this way much more value is given to the importance of the findings. More press coverage of this project should be given, as it is particularly important to make people aware of the underwater archaeological heritage, but it is also vital to encourage its defence. Tourism has yet to reach the seabed, but this may all change soon as Menorca boasts such a rich archaeological history. Sooner or later, it will come out into the open.

Including last year’s, there have been 42 editions of this tournament that began in 1968 with a total of 17 teams taking part and was won by the boat “Flor de Mar”, crewed by Juan Marqués Moll and Marcial Llorens. But between then and now,

we’re not just talking about a difference of forty years but also a difference in the technology used by the fishermen. Carbon-fibre rods, reels, ultra-thin lines, designer hooks and all in a range of finishes, whereas the process used to be manual (handline) and the lines were thicker. In short, much more primitive back then. However, strange as it may seem, the lack of technology didn’t prevent catches from being abundant, as can be seen in the photos. “They were different times”, says one of the longest-serving Club members, “the catches were amazing, with a wealth both of pieces and species. Now that’s no longer the story”. REGULATIONS Fishing tournament regulations have also changed
over the course of time due to the introduction of new technologies. For instance, the primitive “senyes” (visual references) have given way to modern positioning systems such as GPS, echo sounders and plotters, which are much more effective when all is said and done. What time hasn’t destroyed is the warm, family atmosphere that has always characterised this event and made it a time for fun and laughter. This is because the spirit of sportsmanship, which unites all participants in tournaments like these, and total respect for nature and the regulations are still a cornerstone of championships organised by the CNC. Last year, the 42nd time the tournament has been held, was an important anniversary even though it may not
be a round number. Twentyeight boats gathered for the event, although more boats doesn’t equate to more catches, nor are catches counted as in the past…well, at least that’s what the veterans say. VICTORY OF “MARLIN” In the 2012 tournament, “Marlin”, crewed by Cristóbal Torres and Mariano Pons, was proclaimed champion, with 22.610 kg. What’s more, Torres received the prize for the largest fish, which weighed in at 1.555 kg. In second place was “Xanu-Xanu”, with Jesús and Jaume Pons on board, with a total of 10.830 kg. The goals of this group, though, focus more on the ethics of competition and its benefits to personal development. In its first year, the section gained strength and impact thanks to a promotional campaign carried out in
the schools of Ciutadella, which set out to attract future canoeists to the Club. The “Opening Doors” programme, run by Ciutadella Town Council, proved successful and introduced almost 300 youngsters to the world of kayaking. These are two intense days where the true stars are horses, animals that are worshipped on an island that has even given its name to a breed, the purebred Menorquin. The highlight of the fiesta is a huge procession with up to 200 traditionally-dressed riders (caixers) who parade around the town in keeping with strict Sant Joan protocol. The origins of the Sant Joan fiestas date back to the turn of the 16th century and a chapel called Sant Joan de Missa, just 7 kilometres outside Ciutadella. Each year for Sant Joan, members of the parish council, their friends and family would go on a pilgrimage to the chapel. On their return, the procession would parade around the town centre. In keeping with the estates of the realm of the time, a committee was formed to take charge of organising the fiestas. This so-called ‘Junta de Caixers’ committee was chaired by a member of the nobility (Caixer Senyor), a member of the clergy (Caixer Capellà), an artesan (Caixer Casat) and two representatives of the commoners (Caixers Pagés de Tramuntana and Caixer Pagés de Mestral). The Junta, which changed its members every two years, also had a sixth member, a young horseman called the Caixer Fadrí who was in charge of bearing the flag. The rest of the procession was made up by riders (which according to protocol had to be farmers), led by the Flabioler riding on a donkey and
responsible for guiding the parade to the melody of a drum and flute (flabiol). The most important days of Sant Joan are 23rd and 24th June, but Ciutadella lets its hair down for the entire month. The party atmosphere fills the air of the town all through June. Weeks before the event, you can hear drums and the flabiol in the streets, see riders practising on their horses, and local children have nothing else on their mind but the fiesta. The first official event is the ‘Dia des Be’, always celebrated on the Sunday before 23rd June. The star of the day is a man who, representing Saint John the Baptist, parades around the town all day alongside the committee bearing a live sheep on his shoulders. The man is called ‘s’Homo des be’ and walks around barefoot and dressed in sheep skins. The day starts at nine in the morning when the Flabioler plays the Sant Joan melody for the first time at the palace of the Caixer Senyor. The men then walk around the old quarter, visiting the Town Hall, the Palacio Episcopal, the geriatric hospital, social entities, palaces and horse rider inns to invite everybody to the fiestas. Once all the visits are over, now after dark, the traditional Bebida de Caixers is held at the house of the Caixer Casat and straight afterwards the Caixer Capellà and Caixer Senyor are bid farewell. The most festive twist takes place around eight in the evening on Avenida Constitución when hazelnuts are thrown into the crowd and the Banda de Música de Ciutadella plays the classic Jaleo piece. As the big day approaches, the fiesta atmosphere on the streets of Ciutadella builds up and up. The party gets into full swing on the night of 22nd June, with traditional bonfires and the chance to savour the odd gin and lemonade, the typical drink of Sant Joan. Around lunchtime on 23rd June, the horses take centre stage. At two o’clock on the dot, the Flabioler fires his gun and enters the house of the Caixer Senyor to ask permission to start the fi-

To the sound of drums and the flabiol, he begins to gather together all the riders taking part in the procession, which ends with the flag being handed to the Caixer Fadrí and the Caixer Senyor and Caixer Capellà joining the group. Once all together, at 6pm one of the most spectacular events takes place: the Caragol des Born, a fantastic show of horses dancing in the Plaza Mayor. From then on, with the only schedule followed being that of the procession, the main events start. The committee marches to the Sant Joan de Missa chapel, whilst in the town young people take part in the ‘hazelnut battle’. When the committee returns from the chapel, they once again parade around the old quarter according to protocol until the early hours of the morning when they bid farewell to the Caixer Capellà and Caixer Senyor outside their houses, leading to the traditional Bebida de Caixers. Even though the fiesta ends in the small hours, it’s an early start again on the 24th June. The riders gather again and make their way to the Pla de Sant Joan (in the old port of Ciutadella) for the heats of the typical equestrian tournaments that take place later in the afternoon. This event is ideal for families and a great chance for kids to see the horses and avoid the crowds later in the day. The cavalcade then returns to the old quarter, where families watched a more subdued version of the

Now late in the afternoon, crowds congregate in the Plaza de Es Born, outside the Town Hall, awaiting the committee’s arrival to invite the authorities to the evening’s breathtaking equestrian games. There are several games, although the most spectacular is the Ensortilles, where each rider in full gallop attempts to spear a suspended ring onto their lance. The crowd must respect the norms given and take care when the horses begin to gallop, as they do so at great speed and this can be dangerous. Once the games have finished, the cavalcade returns to the old quarter, parading the streets according to protocol until the early morning. Then the farewell to the Caixer Senyor, the Bebida de Caixers and the farewell to the Caixer Capellà all take place, with the haunting and emotional Darrer toc de flabiol, which marks the end of the fiestas. Sant Joan is a thrilling festival and although fiestas with horses are held in all towns and villages on the island, this one is truly unique. BLACK MAGIC AND WITCHCRAFT IN THE TOWN In the 16th century, society in Ciutadella showed a clear calling to Christianity and maintained its love for the order and traditions from bygone times. What’s more, as society grew there were also painful memories of the continual attacks and invasions that brought violence and death to the town. So bad was the fear of a repetition that a belief in mysticism soon became a fear of spiritualism and witchcraft, which in time spread across Ciutadella like a plague, sparking a climate of psychosis that ended up with the Spanish Inquisition. Few signs were needed to raise suspicions, as any poor, old and ugly woman living alone was called a witch, or more simply, any occurrence that society couldn’t find a natural response to was attributed to black magic. So much so that people were often executed without any proof other than having a suspicious or unsightly appearance. Still remaining from back then is the “Forat de Ses Bruixes”, a hole that witches are said to have used to enter and leave the town when it was closed. Another landmark is a house on Carrer Major del Born which belonged to a 18th-century witch judged by the Inquisition. The legend of the Ciutat de Parella may be the most fantastical of all those across the island, but is nonetheless deeply rooted into popular tradition. It is said that on the day of Sant Joan, not far up the coast from Ciutade-
lla, it is possible to see the glow of a city. People say it has been witnessed by fishermen from Cala Ratjada (Mallorca) and Ciutadella, who claim to have seen the blue hues of a city with all its walls and turrets. What’s more, some swear to have heard church bells ringing and inhabitants of the mysterious city singing. Popular culture has it that a farmhand was sent by his master to the town of Ciutadella to sharpen his plough and returned with a silver
one. The master, in a state of surprise, sent the boy back with an iron scythe and he promptly returned with a silver one. The following time, he decided to send him with the largest plough available but, unaware to the boy, followed him there. Arriving at the road to Ciutadella, he then saw how the farmhand headed towards Cala Blanca and on reaching the sea, touched the water and said “Ciutadella has disappeared!” The boy’s innocence allowed him to enter into the city, whilst the man’s greed broke the magic of the place and prevented him from ever returning again. Anyone clinging to the truth of this tale does so by recalling the discoveries of ceramic pieces, jars and Punic remnants at Cova de s’Aigo, in Cala Blanca, which many say is the entrance to the underwater city. Many authors have written about this legend, such as Carlos Garrido, who dedicates a chapter to “Parella, la ciudad sumergida” in his book “Menorca Mágica”. The TV programme “Cuarto Milenio” also interviewed researchers and archaeologists about this and other underwater cities in Menorca, such as Janissari, Sanitja and Son Bou. October will mark the twentieth anniversary of this declaration and you might never have stopped to think the reason why. This article may even seem unimportant to you, but it is applicable to Menorca or absolutely anywhere else on the planet. And I stress, you simply must discover the value of this island. Menorca is much more than you may think. So I’d like to present a series of ideas with the intention of showing you that your visit can include much more than bathing in crystal-clear waters – magnificent nonetheless – and that you can learn about Menorca and its grandeurs. I’ll mention just a few, even though I’m sure you’ll want to discover even more. NATURAL BEAUTY Albufera des Grau has been a Nature Park since 2003. It is located on the east

of the island and boasts wetlands, forests, cliffs, beaches and islets. Here you can enjoy nature in its purest form, as well as the biodiversity of its flora and fauna. Observing, as boring as it may seem, is the greatest gift that this place offers us. And if you’re an avid photographer, don’t miss out on the photo opportunities here. The Camí de Cavalls pathway was built in 1330 under the orders of King Jaume II to defend the Menorcan coastline. The King imposed the obligation of there always being an armed soldier on horseback to fight off possible foreign attacks, hence the word cavalls (Menorcan for horse) in the name. Now, thanks to its recent facelift, the pathway circles the island and is included in the GR223 long-distance trail. On mountain bike or foot, you simply have to cover some (or all) of the

The sea could never be left out of this section, nor could Menorca’s beaches and virgin coves, which favoured by a fantastic climate have given rise to the island’s most important economic activity: tourism. Aware of this important resource and the island’s water sports tradition, the Menorca Water Sports Resorts Association (Estaciones Náuticas de Menorca) is actively promoting such sports through nautical tourism. HERITAGE Prehistory played an important role in the declaration of Menorca as a Biosphere Reserve, and also in the huge architectural legacy on view to all of us today. There is written proof of cheese-making from the fifth century AD and by the year 1000AD, the Arabs were renowned for their excellence in this activity. Nevertheless, it was under
British rule in the 18th century when cheeses took centre stage. Nowadays, the Mahón-Menorca brand protects authentic Menorcan cheeses. If you are easily swayed by your stomach, then simply ask for any delicatessen in Ciutadella. Another legacy of British rule is the production of gin in Menorca. Pomada (gin mixed with lemonade) is the typical drink of all local fiestas and celebrations. It is served ice cold, but don’t overdo it because you’ll end up seeing even more charms than the island already has. And in the field of handicrafts, the island is famed for its production of footwear and jewellery, even though they are not as economically important as

Avarcas are traditional handmade sandals that will almost make you feel like a Menorcan, but if you’re looking for elegance, no worries, as Menorca also boasts internationally-renowned brands. All of the above, and more, are interesting reasons to contemplate the immensity of the island, despite its small size. Overlooking them would mean missing out on the best of Menorca.
