Princesa Sofía MAPFRE, una de las competiciones más prestigiosas del circuito internacional. Este año celebramos la 40ª edición del trofeo y como principal novedad, cabe destacar la inclusión de la regata en la ISAF Sailing World Cup, un nuevo circuito de la Federación Internacional de Vela compuesto por las siete competiciones de vela olímpica más importantes del mundo. Las aguas baleares serán el escenario de este encuentro marítimo y reunirán embarcaciones y regatistas de más de 45 naciones, entre los que destacan la mayoría de campeones olímpicos, mundiales y europeos en activo. Finalmente, quiero expresar mi más sincera enhorabuena a los organizadores y a todas las personas que hacen posible la ejecución y organización de la regata. The Balearic Islands citizens feel honoured that one more year Palma’s bay is the stage of the Trophy S.A.R Princesa Sofia MAPFRE, one of the most prestigious competitions of the international circuit. This year we celebrate the 40th edition of the trophy and, as a principal innovation, it is necessary to emphasize the incorporation of the Trophy S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE in the ISAF Sailing World Cup, an International Sailing Federation new circuit, composed of the seven most important Olympic sail competitions of the world. The Balearic Island’s water, in the Mediterranean sea, will be the stage of this maritime meeting that will bring together crafts and sailors from over 45 nations, among which the most European and World active Olympic Champions. Finally, I express my most sincere congratulations to the organizers and all the people that make possible the execution and the organization of the race. I hope the participants and spectators enjoy the beauty of the landscape, climate, and wide range of cultural and sports activities offered by the island.
MAPFRE: 75 años de historia MAPFRE ha celebrado en 2008 su 75 aniversario y para ello ha organizado diferentes actos con los que ha conmemorado los logros conseguidos en este periodo, entre los que destacan el crecimiento experimentado y la dimensión internacional adquirida. MAPFRE es hoy un gran grupo empresarial, que mira hacia el futuro con una enorme ilusión por ser más grande y mejor. Desde 1933 hasta hoy ha habido muchos momentos destacados, ya que han sido 75 años muy intensos, de evolución continua y crecimiento constante. El Grupo se ha expandido por toda la geografía española, hasta contar con la mayor red del seguro, compuesta por más de 3.100 oficinas, y ha realizado una fuerte apuesta por Iberoamérica, zona en la que es líder en Seguro No Vida y la tercera aseguradora a nivel global en la región.

Cerca de 1.000 personas disfrutaron del espectáculo conjunto de las grandes figuras de la danza y la música, Josep Carreras y Sara Baras, y de la actuación de la artista israelí Ilana Yahav, que realiza atractivas creaciones con arena y luz. El Presidente de MAPFRE, José Manuel Martínez, ha reiterado en numerosas ocasiones, y también durante esta celebración, el esfuerzo de los empleados, colaboradores y directivos del Grupo, que ha sido clave para conseguir que MAPFRE se convierta en la mayor aseguradora española y sea de las 500 mayores compañías del mundo. Asimismo, el Grupo ha organizado un Encuentro Internacional sobre la Historia del Seguro, en el que personalidades del sector han analizado la historia aseguradora en diferentes países; y unas Jornadas Internacionales sobre catástrofes naturales, en la que han estado presentes expertos e instituciones relevantes en la gestión de riesgos catastróficos. MAPFRE: 75 years of history In 2008 MAPFRE has marked its 75th anniversary and has hosted a variety of events to commemorate its achievements over the years, perhaps most notably its growth and its international scope. Today MAPFRE is a major business group that looks to the future optimistically, knowing it will become bigger and better yet. Since 1933 there have many special moments, as these past 75 years have been a time of remarkable activity, providing continued evolution and constant growth. The Group has expanded across Spain, and now boasts the country’s largest insurance network, with over 3,100 offices. third overall insurance company in the region. Close to 1,000 guests enjoyed the show featuring the brilliant figures of music and dance, Josep Carreras and Sara Baras, and the performance by the Israeli artist Ilana Yahav, who presented attractive creations with sand and light. MAPFRE’s President José Manuel Martínez has stressed - not only at this celebration but on numerous
occasions - the effort made by the Group’s employees, collaborators and managers. It is this teamwork which has made MAPFRE Spain’s top insurance company and one of the 500 leading companies in the world. It should also be noted that the Group organised an International Meeting on the History of Insurance, at which distinguished sector personalities analysed insurance history in different countries; and an International Symposium on natural catastrophes, attended by experts and representatives of prominent institutions for catastrophic risk management. Backing for the H.R.H. Princess Sofía MAPFRE trophy In 2009 and for the fourth consecutive year, MAPFRE will sponsor the Trophy S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE, which is now part of the ISAF Sailing World Cup, a new International Sailing Federation circuit consisting of the world’s seven most important sailing competitions. This event, one of the most important to take place in Mediterranean waters, will draw the world’s finest yachting competitors. MAPFRE, the leisure craft insurance leader in Spain, with a market quota of over 30%, has at all times sought to back the men and women who practise the different sailing categories and who are exemplary in their dedication and commitment. It is for this reason that the Group pledges to support the values and perseverance which this and other sports represent.
40 años soplando velas El Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE empezó siendo una regata casi “amateur” para la clase Dragón y ha terminado convertida en un referente para toda la vela mundial. Su historia no está escrita en los libros, sino que permanece en la memoria de aquellos que año tras año han participado en las treinta y nueve ediciones disputadas y que ahora celebran el 40º aniversario de la prestigiosa regata mallorquina. El Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía se constituyó en 1968 con una única clase participante, el Dragón, y con base en el Real Club Náutico de Palma. Seis años más tarde, en 1974, pasó a denominarse además Semana Internacional de Palma, al incorporarse, por expreso deseo de S.M. la Reina Doña Sofía -entonces aún Princesa, y de ahí el nombre de la competición-, las clases Soling,
470, Snipe, 420, Finn y Europa. Fue entonces cuando la regata pasó a estar organizada por cuatro clubes, entonces los de Palma, S’Arenal, San Antonio de la Playa y de Mar -en lugar de la actual Calanova-. Ello permitió seguir creciendo, y en 1976 se dio la entrada a los Vaurien y a los Cruceros. Dos años más tarde empezó a perfilarse el futuro carácter olímpico de la regata, con la sustitución temporal del Dragón por el Star. Apoyo real La Familia Real Española ha estado siempre muy ligada al Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE, de hecho desde su primera edición. El entonces Príncipe Don Juan Carlos empezó navegando en la clase Dragón, en la que consiguió la victoria junto al Duque de Arión y Félix Gancedo en los años 1973, 1974 y 1975 a bordo de “Fortuna”.

También desde el principio el Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía premió con un trofeo al ganador absoluto de todas las clases, y desde el comienzo asimismo gozó de una participación muy internacional. En la 13ª edición, por ejemplo, se registraron 15 países participantes. La cifra dista mucho de las 48 naciones que se inscribieron en la cita del año pasado, pero no está nada mal por ser del año 1980. Fue una edición emblemática, porque además contó con la participación de S.M. el Rey, que compitió en Crucero, y de S.A.R. el Príncipe de Asturias y las Infantas Elena y Cristina, que lo hicieron en 420. Pero la historia del Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía es también una historia de anécdotas, como la que recuerda Quico Llompart, socio fundador del Real Club Náutico de Palma y veterano regatista. “En una
ocasión, durante la regata larga de Cruceros, cuando estábamos a punto de llegar a Cabrera, tuvimos que regresar porque la Armada estaba realizando unas maniobras militares. Yo me enteré por radio y uno no se puede imaginar el chasco que nos llevamos todos”, relata Llompart. Hacia la profesionalización El ambiente “amateur” de aquellas primeras ediciones, en que había una veintena de participantes por clase, hoy ya queda muy lejos. Hace varios años, y ante la avalancha de solicitudes que registraba la competición en la mayoría de sus categorías, los organizadores decidieron apostar por la calidad y limitar la participación, seleccionando a las tripulaciones en función de su posición en el ranking de la ISAF, lo que se tradujo en una prueba de gran nivel, más competida y espectacular. En este camino hacia la profesionalización se decidió apostar plenamente por la vela olímpica, eliminando del programa las clases de vela ligera que aún participaban, aunque manteniendo el Dragón por ser la clase inaugural. Asimismo, el Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE de vela olímpica se desvinculó totalmente de los Cruceros. Así, del Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE casi “amateur” de los primeros años se ha pasado a una competición con un alto grado de profesionalización, lo que ha contribuido a que la regata tenga una gran difusión mediática y un notable impacto social. A ello ha ayudado sin duda la Reina Doña Sofía -que preside cada año la entrega de premios-, pero también la experiencia y profesionalización de los organizadores. Precisamente en noviembre del año pasado la ISAF premió con la medalla de plata al mérito deportivo a uno de los hombres más importantes del equipo, a Jaime Enseñat, que presidió el comité
organizador del Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE durante 35 años. Las instituciones, con el Sofía El actual equipo organizativo está formado por el Real Club Náutico de Palma, el Club Nàutic S’Arenal, el Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa y la Escuela Nacional de Vela Calanova, junto a las federaciones española y balear, el Govern de les Illes Balears, el Consell de Mallorca y los ayuntamientos de Palma y Llucmajor, además de la firma de seguros MAPFRE, patroci-

nadora del evento por cuarto año consecutivo. Todos estos actores se reunieron el año pasado en el Consorcio Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía, que garantiza el apoyo institucional a la regata. Las excepcionales condiciones meteorológicas de la bahía de Palma al inicio de la primavera configuran otro de los elementos constituyentes del éxito de esta competición. Tanto es así que para muchos regatistas la primavera empieza con el Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE, con
el embat soplando y con el sol calentando Mallorca y sus afables gentes. Como dice el Conseller de Esports i Joventut del Govern de les Illes Balears y Presidente del Consorcio Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía, Hble. Sr. Mateu Cañellas, el Sofía “es una mezcla de la esencia de Mallorca: el mar, la náutica, el deporte y la ilusión de que sea una gran competición de proyección internacional”. Entre las mejores del mundo De esta forma, desde hace años el
Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE reúne cada año en Semana Santa en la bahía de Palma a casi mil embarcaciones y unos 1.500 deportistas, entre ellos los top ten de cada clase, campeones mundiales, europeos y olímpicos, en representación de hasta 48 naciones en la última edición. Y para muchas de ellas la prueba mallorquina es selectiva para la formación de sus equipos olímpicos. Así es cómo en 40 años la regata se ha convertido en una marca con entidad propia y en un emblema para la vela española y mundial, lo que ha

quedado certificado con su inclusión en la nueva ISAF Sailing World Cup, precisamente en el año de su 40º aniversario. “El Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE cumple 40 años y lo hace situado entre las siete mejores regatas del mundo. La creación de la ISAF Sailing World Cup no podía llegar en mejor momento para nosotros, es un regalo precioso para estos 40 años de trabajo y afán de superación”, explica Jaume Carbonell, presidente de la Comisión Ejecutiva del Consorcio Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía.
later, in 1974, it was also called Palma International Week with the incorporation of new classes Soling, 470, Snipe, 420, Finn and Europe by express wish of HM Queen Sofia, the reason why the regatta has her name. It was then that the regatta became organised by four clubs: Palma, S’Arenal, San Antonio de la Playa and de Mar -in the place of the present organiser Calanova-. This enabled the regatta to continue growing and in 1976 the event was open to new classes Vaurien and cruisers. Two years later the Olympic character of the regatta began to show with the temporary replacement of the Dragon by the Star.
40 years of blowing out candles
The Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE started as an almost “amateur” regatta for the Dragon class and has become a reference for the whole world of sailing. Its history is not written in the books but remains in the memory of those that year after year have participated in the thirty nine editions held and celebrate now the 40th anniversary of the prestigious Majorcan regatta. The Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia was born in 1968 with only one participating class, the Dragon, based at Real Club Náutico de Palma. Six years

Royal support The Spanish Royal Family has always been very involved with the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE, in fact, from the first edition. The then Prince Don Juan Carlos began sailing in the Dragon class in which he won together with the Duke of Arión and Félix Gancedo in 1973, 1974 and 1975 on board “Fortuna”. Also from the beginning, the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia awarded a trophy to the absolute winner of all classes and had a very international participation. For instance, in the 13th edition, 15 nations entered. This figure is far away from the 48 nations entered in last year’s edition, but it is not a bad number considering it was 1980. It was a special edition because it had the participation of HM the King in the cruiser class and HRH the Prince of Asturias and Infantas Elena y Cristina, in 420. But the history of the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia is also a history full of anecdotes, as the one recalled by Quico Llompart, founding member of Real Club Náutico de Palma and veteran sailor. “Once, during the cruiser offshore race, when we were almost at Cabrera, we had to sail

Towards a professional event The “amateur” atmosphere of those first editions, in which there were around twenty competitors per class, seems far away. For many years and due to the high number of entries in most classes, the organisers decided to work towards quality and limit participation by selecting
teams in accordance with the ISAF world sailing ranking lists. The result was a high level regatta, with strong and spectacular racing. On this way to becoming a professional event, it was decided to concentrate on Olympic sailing with the disappearance of the non-Olympic dinghy sailing events but maintaining the Dragon as inaugural class. Furthermore, the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE for Olympic sailing was separated from the Cruiser competition. In this way, the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE almost “amateur”

The institutions support the Sofia The present organising team is formed by Real Club Náutico de Palma, Club Nàutic S’Arenal, Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa and Escuela Nacional de Vela Calanova, together with the Spanish and Balearic sailing federations, the Govern de les Illes Balears, the Consell de Mallorca as well as Palma and Llucmajor city councils, besides insurance company MAPFRE, the event sponsor for fourth consecutive year. They all formed last year the Consortium Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia, a guarantee of the institutional support to the regatta. The exceptional weather conditions of the bay of Palma at the beginning of spring are one of the elements that contribute to its success. In fact, for many teams springtime begins at the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE, with the embat wind and the sun warming the island and the welcoming character of the people from Majorca. In words of the Councillor of Sports and Youth of the Govern de les Illes Balears and president of the Consortium Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia, Hble. Sr. Mateu Cañellas, the Sofia “is a blend of the essence of Majorca: the sea, nautical sport and the enthusiasm that the event becomes a competition of international scope”.
Among the best in the world In this way, for many years the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE gathers together at Easter in the bay of Palma almost a thousand boats and around 1,500 sailors, with the top ten of each class, World, European and Olympic champions among them. Up to 48 nations were represented in the last edition and for many of them the Majorcan regatta is a trial event for the selection of the national Olympic teams. That is why after 40 years of existence it has a name of its own and an emblem for the Spanish and international sailing world and as a result has been included in the new ISAF Sailing World Cup. “The Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE reaches its 40th anniversary among the best seven regattas in the world. The creation of the ISAF Sailing World Cup could not have come at a better time for us; it is an amazing present after these 40 years of work and will to succeed�, explains Jaume Carbonell, president of the Executive commission of the Consortium Trofeo S.A.R. Jaime Enseñat Velasco es uno de los “pesos pesados” de la vela española y conoce como nadie los entresijos del Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE. -¿Cómo surgió la idea de crear una regata de estas carácterísitcas? -Hace cuatro décadas, el entonces Príncipe de España navegaba en Dragón, yo también, junto a otros regatistas del RCN de Palma: Paco Oliver, Juan Pieras, Riera de la Portilla, Guillermo Cryns y Tomás Miró. Los ahora Reyes de España habían comprado un trofeo y quisieron que se organizase una competición de la clase Dragón que llevase por nombre el de S.A.R. Princesa Sofía. En principio, la regata alternaba su sede entre las ciudades de Barcelona y Palma. La primera vez que nos tocó a nosotros organizamos una entrega de premios en el Pueblo Español tan impresionante que varios regatistas extranjeros solicitaron a SSMM y a la Real Federación Española de Vela que la competición se celebrara permanentemente en la ciudad de Palma. Después el Dragón dejó de ser olímpico y la clase decayó. Entonces se decidió abrirlo a otras clases como el Vaurien, el Snipe… y, poco a poco, la regata fue cogiendo tal prestigio que tuvimos que limitar su participación a las clases olímpicas. -Este año se celebra el 40 aniversario del Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE. ¿Cuáles cree que han sido los mayores logros de esta regata? -Hemos paseado el nombre de Mallorca por todo el mundo. Este evento ha significado la apertura total de Palma a la vela y al mundo entero. También ha sido una promoción muy importante para el Real Club Náutico de Palma, como organizador único durante muchos años, y de los otros tres clubes que se adhirieron como sedes posteriormente: Club Nàutic S’Arenal, Club Marítimo Sant Antonio de la Playa y
Escuela de Vela CalaNova. El Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE fue el origen del boom naútico en Palma y permitió el desarrollo de la vela olímpica. Actualmente, en España no existe ninguna regata tan internacional como el Sofía.Y me atrevo a decir que en Europa no existe ninguna regata que supere el nivel del Trofeo S.A.R Princesa Sofía MAPFRE. -¿Qué papel juega la Familia Real en el Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE? -Lo ha sido todo. Tanto los Reyes como el Príncipe y las Infantas han regateado durante años en clases como el Dragón, 470 y 420. Siempre se han mostrado muy interesados por los asuntos concernientes a este trofeo y siempre han apoyado todas las decisiones que ha tomado el Comité Organizador y que han permitido su transformación progresiva hasta alcanzar lo que es ahora: una gran regata de vela olímpica. La Reina Sofía, además, ha asistido a todas las entregas de premios. -¿Cómo valora el apoyo institucional que ha tenido el Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE? ¿Y el apoyo de los patrocinadores con Mapfre actualmente al frente? -Primero se contó con el apoyo de la Federación Española de Vela y del Ayuntamiento de Palma, para después sumarse el resto de organismos oficiales de Baleares: el Govern de les Illes Baleares y el Consell de Mallorca. A todos ellos estamos sumamente agradecidos. En el apartado de sponsors privados, debo decir que éste ha estado muy ligado por casualidad al mundo de las aseguradoras: Axa Mare Nostrum y ahora con MAPFRE, a la que felicitamos por mantener su patrocinio en los difíciles tiempos que vivimos. También se ha contado con el inestimable apoyo de Majorica. El papel de un patrocinador privado es conseguir la máxima difusión y promo-
ción del trofeo, además de estar con la organización del evento. -Usted ha estado desde el nacimiento de este trofeo. ¿Cuáles fueron las mayores dificultades por las que atravesó? -El más difícil fue que la gente creyera en esta regata. Al principio, el Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE despertaba muy poco interés. La verdad es que no le daban la menor importancia, puesto que ya existían la semana de Hyerès y la semana de vela de Kiel. Hubo que trabajar muchos años en promoción para darla a conocer y animar a los regatistas a que participasen. Estuvimos en todas las reuniones de la ISAF, donde presentábamos la regata. Ahora no hay regatista destacado que no haya navegado en nuestra Bahía y participado en esta regata. Hemos llegado a acoger más de 1.000 barcos, que se dice pronto, pero que

para mi es una cifra desmesurada. -¿Qué opinión le merece los nuevos cambios que ha incorporado la ISAF? -Creo que ha sido equivocado eliminar una clase que aportaba tanta espectacularidad como el Tornado. Tampoco veo acertada la incorporación del match race, ya que, aunque técnicamente sea bueno, se pierde la espectacularidad de las salidas con hasta 54 barcos. -¿Y la incorporación este año de la vela paraolímpica como principal novedad del Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE? -Me parece perfecto porque así está abriendo el deporte de la vela a otras personas. Ofrece la posibilidad de practicar y competir en una regata tan prestigiosa y popular a quienes antes no tenían esta oportunidad.
“There is no event in Spain so international as the Sofía” Jaime Enseñat Velasco is one of the “heavy weights” of the Spanish sailing world and knows all the detailed background of the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE. In fact he is its alma mater and has been until two years ago the president of the Organising Committee. Last year Jaime Enseñat was awarded the ISAF silver medal in recognition to the great work carried out at the Federación Balear de Vela and the Organising Committees of the Copa del Rey and the Trofeo S.A.R Princesa Sofia MAPFRE. -How was the idea born to create an event of such characteristics? -Four decades ago, the then Prince of Spain sailed in the Dragon, as myself, together with other sailors from RCN de Palma: Paco Oliver, Juan Pieras, Riera de la Portilla, Guillermo Cryns and Tomás Miró. The present King and Queen of Spain had bought a trophy to be named SAR Princesa Sofia. In the beginning, the venue changed between Barcelona and Palma. When we organised it for the first time, we prepared such an impressive prize giving ceremony at Pueblo Español that many foreign competitors asked Their Majesties and the Real Federación Española de Vela to fix the venue of the competition in Palma. After that, the Dragon class was no longer Olympic and the fleet decreased. So it was then decided to open the event to classes such as the Vaurien, Snipe… and little by little the regatta grew, so much so that we had to limit the participation to the Olympic classes.
-This will be the 40th anniversary of the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE. Which are in your opinion the greatest achievements? -We have made Majorca known all around the world. This event has meant the positioning of Palma in the sailing sector and in the whole world. It has also been an important promotion for Real Club Náutico de Palma, as main organiser during many years, and for the Clubs that joined the organisation later on: Club Nàutic S’Arenal, Club Marítimo Sant Antonio de la Playa and Escuela de Vela CalaNova. The Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia MAPFRE was the origin of the nautical boom in Palma and contributed to the development of Olympic sailing. At present, there is no event in Spain as international as the Sofia. And I dare say there is no event in Europe with a higher level than that of the Trofeo S.A.R Princesa Sofia MAPFRE. -Which is the role of the Royal Family in the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE? -They have been everything. The King and Queen as well as the Prince and the Infantas have sailed for many years in classes such as the Dragon, 470 and 420. They have always shown great interest with matters related to the regatta and have always given support to the decisions made by the Organising Committee enabling its growth to become what it is now: a great Olympic sailing regatta. Besides, Queen Sofia has attended all of the prize giving ceremonies. -How do you evaluate the institutional support of the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE? And the sponsor support with MAPFRE as the main sponsor? -We first had the support of the Federación Española de Vela and Palma City Council and then the other official institutions of Baleares joined them: the Govern de les Illes Baleares, Consell de Mallorca. are deeply grateful to all of them. Regarding the private sponsors, the event has always been closely linked to insurance companies: Axa Mare Nostrum and now Mapfre, which we thank and congratulate for its continued sponsorship in this time of crisis. We have also counted on the invaluable support from Majorica. The role of a private sponsor is to achieve maximum promotion of the regatta as well as to be involved with the event organisation. -You have been involved with the event since the beginning. What were the main difficulties faced? -The most difficult thing was to make people believe in the regatta. In the beginning, the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE awoke very little interest. The truth is that it was not taken into account, and all the attention was on the already existing regattas of Hyerès (SOF) and Kiel (Kieler Woche). We had to work hard for many years to promote the event and attract sailors to participate. We attended all ISAF meetings to promote the regatta. At present there is no outstanding sailor who hasn’t sailed in our Bay or participated in our event. We have reached 1,000 boats, an outstanding number if you ask me. -What do you think about the last changes made by ISAF? -I think it is wrong to see a class as spectacular as the Tornado disappear. I don’t consider the Match race a very good idea, although it might be good technically, the amazing scene of a start with up to 54 boats is lost. -And what do you think about the incorporation of the Paralympics’ sailing competition this year in the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE? -I think it is a perfect decision that opens the sport of sailing to everyone. It offers people who didn’t have the opportunity before to practice and compete in a prestigious event.

Nuevas clases Vela paralímpica El 40 Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE supone el estreno en el continente europeo de la vela paralímpica como nueva división de la ISAF Sailing World Cup. La vela paralímpica, que fue deporte de exhibición en los Juegos Paralímpicos de Atlanta 1996 y que a partir de Sydney 2000 ha participado en el programa de todas las citas, difiere de la olímpica en el equipamiento, que es adaptado a los distintos tipos de discapacidad. El modo de puntuación se corresponde con el grado de minusvalía, de ahí que deportistas con distintas discapacidades puedan competir juntos. En la regata mallorquina están convocadas tres clases, que son las que competirán en los Juegos Paralímpicos de Londres 2012: 2.4mR, Skud-18 y Sonar. De los tres barcos, el 2.4mR es el más conocido en España, con una flota de una veintena de unidades. Nacida en Estocolmo en 1983, se trata de una embarcación quillada individual, que es una miniatura a escala 1:5 de los antiguos barcos que competían en la Copa América. El patrón va sentado mirando a proa, con todos los controles del trimado a mano. Precisamente el trimado, así como la táctica y la estrategia, son las claves de la competición en este barco, ya que las diferencias de peso del tripulante no son relevantes, al estar éste siempre muy cerca del centro de gravedad del barco. Concebido en el 2005 y estrenado en los Juegos de Pekín, el Skud-18 es un
monotipo doble inspirado en el 49er, pero adaptado a las necesidades de los regatistas discapacitados. A bordo tiene que ir al menos una mujer y cuenta con spi asimétrico. Por último, el Sonar es una embarcación quillada para tres tripulantes y con spinnaker simétrico. Diseñado en la década de los ochenta por el americano Bruce Kirby e introducido en el
programa paralímpico en el 2000, combina a la perfección los conceptos de seguridad, eficiencia, prestaciones y diversión. Las tres clases de vela olímpica, cuyos participantes están sujetos a la clasificación en los equipos nacionales de sus respectivos países, competirán en un campo de regatas exclusivo, situado frente a Calanova.

Match race femenino El Match Race Femenino se estrenará en Londres 2012 en sustitución del Yngling. La embarcación que la Federación Internacional de Vela ha elegido para este formato de competición de barco contra barco es el Elliott 6 m., aunque con ciertas modificaciones para adaptarlo a un equipo femenino, como una reducción de vela. La tripulación del Elliott 6 m. también estará formada por tres mujeres, como ocurría con el Yngling, que se despidió del panorama olímpico en Pekín 2008. Se mantienen asimismo los 205 kilos de peso conjunto del trío. Diseñado por Greg Elliott, se caracteriza por la quilla fija y la bañera abierta. Además, es un barco de fácil maniobra y de aceleración muy rápida.

New classes Paralympic competition The 40th Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE will welcome the Paralympic competition in the year of the launching of the ISAF Sailing World Cup. Paralympic sailing was an exhibition sport in the 1996 Atlanta Games and became a full medal sport for the first time in Sydney 2000. The equipment is adapted to the different disabilities and scoring is also made in accordance with the level of disability allowing sailors with different disabilities to sail
together. The regatta is open to the three events that will compete in the 2012 London Olympics: 2.4mR, Skud-18 and Sonar. Of the three Paralympic events, the 2.4mR is the better known in Spain, with a fleet of approximately 20 units. Born in Stockholm in 1983, it is a single-handed keelboat, a miniature at scale 1:5 of the boats that competed in the America’s Cup. The helm sits looking forward with all the trimming controls at reach. In fact, the trim-

ming as well as the tactic and strategy are key elements of the competition on this boat; crew weight differences are not relevant because the crew is always placed very near the boat’s centre of gravity. Conceived in 2005 and with its debut at the Beijing Olympics, the Skud-18 is a double-handed one design inspired in the 49er, but adapted to the needs of disabled sailors. At least one of the crew members must be female and it has
an asymmetrical spinnaker. The Sonar is a triple handed keelboat with an asymmetrical spinnaker. Designed in the eighties by US designer Bruce Kirby and introduced in the Paralympic competition in the year 2000, it offers a perfect combination of the concepts of safety, efficiency, features and fun. These three classes, whose participants are subject to qualifying for their national teams, will sail in a separate racing area in front of Calanova. Women keelboat match race The women keelboat math race will debut at the 2012 London Olympics replacing the Yngling. The boat selected by the ISAF is the Elliott 6 m., although with some changes to adapt it to a women’s crew such as a smaller sail. The Elliott 6 m will also be a three female crew boat as the Yngling whose last participation as Olympic class was at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The 205 kgs weight is also maintained. Designed by Greg Elliott, it has a fixed keel and an open cockpit. Besides, it is a boat easy to manoeuvre and that reaches speed very easily. Rest of the classes Other classes that will compete at the regatta will be the 470 -the Olympic class with more sailors in the world after the Laser-; the 49er High Performance Dinghy that, designed in 1995 had its debut as Olympic class at the 2000 Sydney Games; the Star class, the oldest of the Olympic classes with its first Olympic participation in 1932; the Finn, a single-handed boat with a big sail area; the Laser Standard, that became Olympic class in the 1996 Atlanta Games and the Laser Radial and the RS:X M & W with its first Olympic participation in Qingdao 2008.

Princesa Sofía MAPFRE, que se celebra del 4 al 10 de abril en la Bahía de Palma, será una edición muy especial, no sólo porque la competición española cumple 40 años, sino por la puesta en marcha de la ISAF Sailing World Cup, el nuevo circuito de la Federación Internacional de Vela, compuesto por las siete competiciones de vela olímpica más importantes del mundo, entre ellas la regata mallorquina como la única española. La primera temporada de esta novedosa fórmula se puso en marcha el pasado mes de diciembre con la disputa de la regata Sail Melbourne en Australia. Le siguió el Rolex Miami OCR, en Estados Unidos a finales de enero. El Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE es el tercer evento del circuito, e inaugura la temporada de regatas en Europa. Algo más de una semana más tarde empezará la Semana Olímpica Francesa, en Hyères. En mayo se disputará la Delta Lloyd Regatta, en Holanda, y en junio tendrá lugar la Kiel Week, en Alemania. La última regata puntuable para la ISAF Sailing World Cup será la Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta, que se correrá en septiembre en la localidad inglesa de Weymouth, en el campo de regatas que acogerá las pruebas

La Bahía de Palma cuenta con unas grandes condiciones para la vela Que los buenos vientos te acompañen, solían decir los navegantes. Pues en la Bahía de Palma ese deseo se cumple en la mayor parte de los casos. El viento, constante en dirección e intensidad, muy poca ola y corrientes escasas y provocadas por el eolo son las condiciones ideales de las que disfruta la Bahía de Palma. Quizá, para algunos, sean demasiado monótonas, pero de esta forma gana el que navega más rápido, mientras que si el viento es rolón -con variaciones de la dirección-, ya no sólo depende de la velocidad, también hay que seguir esos cambios para navegar con el bordo más favorable. Las condiciones meteorológicas de la ciudad son una la mejor baza de Palma para albergar competiciones como el Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE, que ha sido elegido para formar parte de la ISAF Sailing World Cup, un nuevo circuito de la Federación Internacional de Vela (ISAF) compuesto por las siete competiciones de vela olímpica más importantes del mundo. La Bahía de Palma es uno de los mejores campos de regatas del mundo gracias al Embat, un viento
térmico que se produce cuando la tierra se calienta más que el mar por efecto del sol, con lo que el aire de tierra pierde densidad y, al subir, el aire más frío del mar tiende a ocupar el “espacio vacío” que ha dejado el aire caliente en tierra. Ello provoca una brisa hacia tierra más o menos constante, a partir de las 12 y hasta las 18 horas. Además de su magnífico viento, Palma, una ciudad cosmopolita cuya área metropolitana reúne a más de 400.000 habitantes, cuenta con unas infraestructuras de primer nivel. El moderno aeropuerto de Son Sant Joan, situado a 8 kilómetros al este del centro de la ciudad, cuenta con una gran capacidad y un buen número de conexiones con las principales ciudades europeas que resuelven por completo el problema de las comunicaciones. Es el tercer aeropuerto español por número de pasajeros, sólo detrás del Aeropuerto de MadridBarajas y del de Barcelona. El puerto de Palma cubre una extensa línea de costa comprendida entre el Moll Vell, frente a la catedral, y el Dique del oeste. Es utilizado para el transporte de mercancía, barcos pesqueros, embarcaciones de recreo,

transporte de pasajeros y buques militares. Existen dos estaciones marítimas en servicio en el Muelle de Peraires, desde donde operan los cruceros y los barcos de línea regular con destino a Barcelona, Valencia, Ibiza, Mahón o Denia. Los grandes ejes viarios por carretera de Mallorca confluyen en Palma. Estos últimos años se han mejorado los accesos a la ciudad por carretera y en 2007 entró en servicio la primera línea de metro de Palma, que une la plaza de España con el campus de la Universidad de las Islas Baleares. Además la ciudad cuenta con 26 líneas de autobuses interurbanos y una flota de 1246 taxis. Privilegiado enclave del Mar Mediterráneo, se trata de la capital de Baleares. La ciudad es un gran destino turístico para muchos europeos, por lo que la ciudad dispone de una gran infraestructura hotelera para poder dar alojamiento a la alta demanda de estancias. De esta forma, Palma tiene hoteles de todas las clases y tipos que puedan necesitar los visitantes. Asímismo, en Palma existe una amplísima oferta complementaria, por lo que es imposible aburrirse. En ella encontramos todo tipo de actividades lúdicas y de ocio para todas las edades. Entre los edificios más representativos de la ciudad y que merecen una visita cabe citar la Catedral de Mallorca, la más alta de España y segunda de Europa, el Castillo de Bellver, los Baños Árabes, el Palacio de la Almudaina, el Consulado del Mar, sede del Govern de les Illes Balears, la Lonja o el Museo Es Baluard. Por situación, condiciones meteorológicas e infraestructuras, la Bahía de Palma ha albergado en los últimos años algunas de las competiciones de vela más prestigiosas del circuito internacional como la Copa del Rey, diferentes campeonatos nacionales, europeos y mundiales y el propio Trofeo S.A.R. The Bay of Palma offers incredible sailing conditions “Fair winds”, the sailors used to say. This wish becomes almost always a reality in the bay of Palma. The wind of constant direction and strength, little waves and hardly any currents caused by the wind are the ideal conditions offered by the Bay of Palma. Some may find them monotonous but in this way the fastest boat wins; on the contrary, if the wind shifts, winning does not only depend on speed but also on the ability to follow the changes to sail on the favourable side of the course. The weather conditions in Palma are one of the main elements that make the city a perfect venue for events such as the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE, included in the ISAF Sailing World Cup, a new sailing circuit formed by the most important seven Olympic classes’ events in the world. The Bay of Palma is one of the best racing areas in the world thanks to the Embat, a thermal wind that blows when the land is warmer than the sea, with the land air losing density and the cooler sea air taking the “empty space” left by the warm land air. The result is a more or less cons-
tant breeze to the land from around midday to 18:00 hours. Besides its great wind conditions, Palma, a cosmopolitan city with over 400,000 inhabitants, also offers first class infrastructures. The modern airport of Son Sant Joan, located at 8 kilometres from the town centre, has a great capacity and a large number of connections with the main European cities solving the problem of transport. It is the third Spanish airport by number of passengers, behind MadridBarajas and Barcelona airports. The port of Palma covers a large coastline from Moll Vell, opposite the Cathedral to the West dike. It is a main tourist destination for many Europeans with a large accommodation offer. The city has hotels of all categories. Besides, the city offers a wide complementary offer to ensure no one gets bored with all types of leisure and fun activities for everyone. Some of the most representative buildings of the city and that are worth visiting are the Cathedral, the tallest in Spain and second in Europe, the Bellver Castle, the Arab baths, the Almudaina Palace, the Consulat del Mar, the venue of the Government of the Balearic Islands, the Lonja or the Museum Es Baluard.
