Larned, Pawnee County reaping benefits from marketing effort
L
arned and Pawnee County continue to partner with the Topeka-based marketing firm Bajillion Agency to promote the area’s ample job opportunities, safe neighborhoods and low cost of living. The Live Larned campaign, which started in 2019, involves a mix of traditional, digital and social media efforts. It has included the development of a new brand/logo family, new microwebsite for Larned State Hospital recruiting, a marketing plan, new photography, community brochure, recruiting videos
and more. “We are super happy with it,” Larned Mayor William Nusser said of the partnership, noting the importance of the varied marketing approach. “Having someone handle our imaging has helped us.” As the city’s and county’s marketing needs changed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bajillion was
there to offer advice and reaim promotional efforts. He called their work “targeted” and “laser focused,” while being easily adaptable to meet shifting needs. The services cost about $2030,000 each year, but Nusser said it is worth the price. For the cost of an additional employee, they can tap into the agency’s resources, contacts
and networking ability. They have already started to see dividends, the mayor said. “For the past 40 years, there has been a big rural to urban shift,” he said. But, since COVID and people working from home, more folks looking for rural communities. This ongoing campaign has put Larned and Pawnee County on the map, Nusser said. People are finding them and relocating there. All along, this has been a joint effort between the city and the county, he said. “We are better together,” he said, Over the past few years, this relationship has gotten even stronger. “Pawnee County and Larned have so much to offer to people who live and work there, we’re just thrilled we got the chance to tell that story,” said Andrea Engstrom, president of Bajillion Agency. “Congratulations to the entire community ... we love working with you guys.”

State Theatre stays true to roots to provide affordable family movie experience
A
fter weathering a brief shutdown in 2020, the resilient 72-year-old State Theatre is back to providing memorable moviegoing experiences for residents of Larned and surrounding communities. Though crowds were slow to come back as businesses opened back up, State Theatre Director Jim White said strong community support for the theater has not waned in the aftermath of the pandemic. The theater opened its doors
in its current location at 617 Broadway St. in Larned on April 6, 1949, and remains an iconic community centerpiece seven decades later. While much has changed about the technology and furnishings in the historical movie house, White said part of what helps the theater remain popular in the community is by staying true to its historical roots, and its core mission, which he said is to provide an affordable, family-friendly movie watching experience for the community

it serves. “We felt it was important that the kids in our community and surrounding communities didn’t have to drive a long distance to go see a movie,” White said. “(We wanted to provide) the community something to do that was not an expensive adventure.” The non-profit organization that runs the State Theatre organized in 2002 after it had been closed for several years. As the group began to seek out donations to purchase the theater and upgrade equipment, they found broad community support to get it back up and running. The first film at the re-opened icon showed over Independence Day weekend that year. That supportive community, White said, is the engine that keeps the theater going. As a not-for-profit organiza-
tion, the theater is completely volunteer-run, with no one receiving a salary. Often, White said, they will have volunteers from local church and civic organizations who do everything from operating concessions to running the box office. Even the projectionists are volunteer positions. That volunteer-centered operation, he said, allows the theater to keep the movie-going experience affordable for the entire family, with ticket prices ranging from $4 for children and $5 for adults for 2D movies, to $5 for children and $7 for adults for 3D movies. Most of their concessions range from $1-$2. One promotion unique to the State Theatre is their Date Night package, which for one price covers two tickets, two medium soft drinks, and two medium popcorns.
Preserving history, preparing for the future Since the theater re-opened almost 20 years ago, White said nearly everything on the interior has been upgraded or renovated. In 2009, the theater upgraded to a modern digital projection system with the capability to show 3D movies, at a price tag of around $100,000. Again community support was broad for the upgrades. Beyond that, everything from the seats, screens, concession stands, restrooms, to the draperies that hang in the theater have been upgraded, updated or renovated to meet the needs of both the modern moviegoers and volunteers that help run it each weekend. The theater also obtained equipment to be able to host drive-in movies, which he said they try to do in the community three to four times each summer. The technology allows outdoor moviegoers to receive audio through their vehicle’s FM radio. “There’s a lot of kids out there who have never been to a drive-in movie,” White said. For all the amenities that were upgraded, though, White said there are things the theater prefers not to upgrade, in order to maintain the historical integrity of the theater. For starters, White noted the State Theatre is one of few theaters still in existence that still has a cry room. The board also decided to preserve the building’s iconic hand-operated marquee, and original front doors as long as possible, to maintain the theater’s original exterior ambiance. He said it may reach the point where they have to invest in a digital marquee as the large plastic letters become harder to obtain, but the theater will maintain the original marquee as long as possible. With a special mix of past, present and future, State Theatre hopes to continue to provide an affordable, family friendly movie experience for generations to come.

Erway legacy continues
Fourth generation Landon Erway took over grandfather’s agency
S
tate Farm Insurance selected Landon Erway as the next agent to replace Kale Erway, Landon’s grandfather, at the Larned office location in November 2020. Landon completed his 12-month agency development training and took over the agency on December 1st. The Erway Agency has served the community for 64 years throughout four generations. Landon feels blessed to carry on his family’s legacy stating, “This specific agency holds a very proud piece of my heart. These two men before me have spent lifetimes
creating multi-generational relationships with the hard-working people of our community. I cannot tell you how honored I am to be able to build on these relationships in the years to come. For those of you who are currently with the agency, be prepared for an office that is set on relentlessly serving you. I accepted this opportunity with the expectation to positively impact lives. This agency has and will always be focused on putting you and your family’s needs first. Here is to the many years to come, and to the next lifetime worth of relationships!”
Harold Erway started his State Farm Agency in his home located at 718 Santa Fe., Larned, in 1957. Harold was a 35 year agent from 1957 to 1992. His son Kale, a 32 year agent, started his career on July 1, 1988 and retired November 30, 2020. Camron Erway, son of Kale and Marsha, has been a State Farm agent for 16 years in Salem, Missouri.

Recreational opportunities
abound
P
awnee County Communities offer much in the way of recreational opportunities. Larned, Burdett, Rozel and Garfield all provide diversions for residents and visitors. Burdett, known as the home of the man who discovered the planet Pluto, offers a fun Solar System themed miniature golf course. The Burdett Community Pride club maintains the course, with balls and clubs available at the city office. New playground equipment was installed at the park next to the golf course. The Rozel Community center includes meeting space and an indoor fitness center. Community members meet there to mark major holidays, including Halloween with Trunk-or-Treat and Christmas with a parade and visit from Santa Claus, hot-dog feeds and 5K fun runs. It is also available for private events. Rozel park includes a playground, basketball courts, and a picnic shelter. A ballpark is also available through the community center. Garfield is home to two parks located right on the US 56, Downey Memorial Park on the east end of town, and Camp Criley park on the north. Be sure to get a close-up look at the tiny chapel located at Downey Memorial Park. Larned, the county seat, is home to the only public pool and splash pad in the county, drawing many from around the area each summer. The large 92-year-old pool and bathhouse is located at Schnack/ Lowery Park, W. 1st and Carroll. Although the pool didn’t open last
year due to COVID-19, extensive updates to the pool’s filtration, lighting and sound systems began in 2020. They were completed in the spring of this year, and the facility opened on May 28. Each year, the season opens Memorial Day weekend, and ends the weekend before backto-school. During that time, the pool is staffed by local high school and college students, providing meaningful summer employment and patron safety. Other Schnack/Lowery Park features include a duck pond and a 75-year-old mechanical train, the Schnack Express. Local civic groups partnered with Larned Community Pride and the city recently to add lights, sound and renovate its mechanical function to keep it running for years to come. Kids and parents alike delight in the train. In 2020 the splash pad located at Doerr Vernon Park, 620 Fort Larned Ave., provided an option for water-based recreation as work continued on the pool. The pad provides yet another way
area youth can enjoy water play and stay cool during the summer months. Typically, it remains open after the pool shuts down, for as long as temperatures remain warm enough and autumn leaf fall doesn’t threaten to clog drains. The Larned Recreation Commission can be found at the Larned Community Center. A variety of team sports are organized through the rec, and play is coordinated at playing fields
throughout the city. Located next to the Pawnee County Fairgrounds, there is also an outdoor fitness walking track available for the public. The Larned Municipal Golf Course, located on the far east side of city with access from the highway, provides ample opportunity for golf lovers around the area, and is also a frequent stop for college golf teams around the state looking for a spot to warm up on their way to tournaments in neighboring Barton County. In 2020, the city partnered with the course’s board of directors to completely revamp the parking area next to the clubhouse, and other updates are also being considered. Public and private tournaments are a given on most weekends. Together, the county and the cities work hard to provide a wide variety of recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

Santa Fe Trail Days Tradition and celebration resumes
I
t’s clear the people of Pawnee County have a healthy appreciation for their heritage and their association with the Santa Fe Trail. For many years, Larned has marked the beginning of summer with a week-long celebration known as Santa Fe Trail Days. The event took a different direction in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of one week of mass gatherings, there were several smaller “pop-up” events spread over several weeks. But all of the traditions of Santa Fe Trail Days resumed in 2021, which also marked 200 years since
the Santa Fe Trail opened as a commercial highway. At the end of May, everyone was invited to hitch up their wagons and come on down to Larned for a weekend of fun for all ages. Traditional events include an evening parade, outside movie, food and craft vendors, burger battle, biscuits and gravy feed, touch-a-truck, mechanical bull, concerts, beer garden, rodeo and much more. The weekend wrapped up with a community worship service led by the band Cloverton. Watch for the 30th annual Santa Fe Trail Days in 2022.

CLOCK REALTY
In good hands for the
future W
hen Pawnee County natives Tyson and Chelsea Steffen took over Larned staple Clock Realty in 2019, their goal was to continue to provide the same trusted service the community had already trusted for over 30 years. They purchased the business from previous owner Del Fischer, who still is on staff with the business. Tyson hoped to bring his experience in the real estate business as an appraiser for Farm Credit to help grow the long-time Larned business even more. Both Tyson and Chelsea say they enjoy the work they do with, and for, the community. “It’s fun to help people that are looking to buy a house or insurance,” Tyson said. “I enjoy helping people in a situation that’s (often) very stressful - buying a house is a big expenditure.” The business is more than just agricultural, commercial and residential real estate. They also offer several different types of
insurance, as well. As an independent insurance agent, Clock works with several different companies to offer “the gamut of insurance, everything but health and life.” With small-town roots, Tyson said they aim to bring those core values into their work. “We want people to know we’re going to treat them right,” he said. “We want to treat our customers like we would want to be treated...to given them the best service they could possibly receive.” Their office at 615 Broadway St. in Larned is open 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. However, staff can be reached by phone outside of normal business hours 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Their office phone number is 620-285-6541, and all calls outside of normal business hours will be forwarded to a staff member.

he 2021 Pawnee County Fair took place July 21-25. Usually held on the last weekend of July, the fair helps to showcase the accomplishments of people from all the communities in the county. It’s a chance for everyone from youth to seniors to put their best foot forward and demonstrate a year’s worth of learning in the areas of raising and handling pets and livestock, agricultural and marksmanship skills, and hobbies and crafts including photography, needlework, painting, sculpting, woodworking and more. There was also a ranch rodeo, pedal tractor pull and a peach pie eating contest. While historically the roots of the 4-H program are deep in the world of agriculture, the modern era has seen the variety of projects expand to include many designed to appeal to kids growing up in rural and urban
environments. Livestock shows still drive the action, but many of today’s kids are just as apt to display the results of their tech skills as their ability to lead a sheep, pig or cow around the ring. Visitors to the fair can take in all types of displays throughout the days-long event. This was a full-fledged fair this year. Pawnee County was fortunate last year because its fair occurred later in the season. Kansas State University Extension Service, which oversees the state’s 4-H program, halted in-person activities in 2020 as a precaution due to COVID-19, resuming them in early July. As a result, Pawnee County 4-Hers were able to take part in some live activities.

igher wheat prices delivered a pleasant surprise to Pawnee County area farmers, who enjoyed a promising 2021 harvest. The Pawnee County Coop Association brought home 2.2 million bushels of wheat for the 2021 harvest. The majority of the
crop was purchased when the wheat price was $5.80 or slightly higher, a far cry from the $3.80 price in 2020. A higher price for wheat spreads good news all-around, according to Kim Barnes, chief financial officer and grain merchandiser for the Pawnee County Coop Association (PCCA).

“We’ve had a good year with farmers earning a good price for their wheat,” Barnes said. “It looks promising for the futures, which are approaching a nine-year high since 2012 when the price was high. Farmers are liking what they’re seeing looking ahead.” Barnes said a plentiful harvest is excellent for business. “We figure that harvest is rolled over seven times in the economy, and that’s good for everybody,” he said. Ample moisture fueled late progress for the 2021 wheat, which had an extended time frame for harvest. There was a record cold snap that created frost issues in February followed by a seasonably warm March. Ample rain followed, which created a solid crop. “Harvest required more time than normal,” Barnes said. “The farmers were delayed by high humidity during the early part of the day. They benefited 1 or 2 percent with drier wheat if they waited until later in the day. We got good moisture at the right time during the growing period.” The wheat benefited from a late weather boost. “During the filling process, there was cooler weather and ample rain which helped the plant mature and finish,” he said. Farmers who sprayed for disease benefited from the treatment. “Disease in areas pushed the test weight down, but those who sprayed for disease paid off and they could tell a positive benefit.” The prospective Pawnee County fall harvest of corn, milo
and soybeans looks promising because of the sufficient summer rain. Dryland corn harvest will be delayed with milo and soybeans to follow. “The fall crop harvest appears bigger than we’ve had in recent years,” Barnes said. “We’ve enjoyed an ample year of moisture. Dryland corn and irrigated corn looks to be a good crop. The milo is heading out.” The eastern half of Pawnee County has been blessed with ample moisture, which has missed parts of western Pawnee County. “Dryland crops can fold up because of the heat, so the rain has helped a lot where it’s fallen,” Barnes said. “The milo looks good, and it’s headed out from Larned to Hays. They’ll be plenty of milo to harvest.” Golden Valley, Inc., a farmer owned grain and supply cooperative was formed December 1, 2001 by the consolidation of Golden Plains Cooperative of Rozel and Sanford, Farmers Coop Grain and Supply of Burdett and Tri-Ag Coop of Sanford. Golden Valley, Inc. handles wheat, corn, milo and soybeans at three locations with 4 million bushels of combined grain storage. The crop production department in Sanford provides a full range of agronomy services including custom application of dry and liquid fertilizer and chemicals, soil testing, wholesale and retail sales of fertilizer and chemicals, application equipment rental, custom blending and NH3 outlets at Rozel, Burdett and Sanford.

hanks to his grandfather, Larned’s Rocke Foster developed a love of hard work on the ranch. Foster has used that love of ranching as chairman of the Santa Fe Trail Association rodeo. “My grandfather was an old cowboy in western Nebraska,” Foster said. “I’d spend summers on his ranch, where I developed a true love for livestock and horses.” The “cowboy” never left Foster, who joined the rodeo team at Kansas State University after graduating from Manhattan High School. “I started in other events, but settled on team roping p g as the heel roper, p ,” he said. “Myy
wife is tougher than me. She started as a bull rider.” Foster works with Jason Skelton, who serves as assistant chairman of the Santa Fe Trail Association rodeo. Two nights were run in July at the Pawnee County Fair with ranch bronc riding, bareback riding, calf roping, team roping, barrel racing, bull riding and mutton busting. First-place finishers were rewarded. Overall winners earned a belt buckle. “After last year, people were happy to get out and about,” he said. “It was an open rodeo, and we drew college rodeo contestants and cowboys from across the state — Barton County, Wichita, Salina, Topeka and cowboys out west. We were able to showcase our beautiful arena.” Steve Kraft Rodeo Company from Abbyville brought the stock for the two-day show. “Kraft Rodeo brings the support staff, and does a great job as the contractor,” Foster said. The Santa Fe Trail Association kept ticket prices to $5 through business and individual sponsorships. Sponsored banners on the
fencing helped pay for the rodeo. “It’s work that gets easier every year because they see the benefits from sponsoring a local show,” Foster said. “My goal was to keep ticket prices low through sponsorships. It’s nice to see businesses and individuals invest time and money in their community. It was an entertaining show. We received positive feedback.” The non-profit organization donates to local causes, such as a free drive-in movie. The group funds projects for local elementary schools in the Larned and Pawnee Heights school districts. “We help as many youngsters as we can,” he said.

JOIN US AT THE 11TH ANNUAL GREAT BEND FARM, RANCH AND HEMP EXPO APRIL 7-9, 2022
O
ne of the largest farm shows in the United States takes place in the spring at Great Bend’s Expo Complex. Show Manager Darren Dale says the show spreads over 80 acres, with exhibitors from all over the United States, Canada and Australia. “Great Bend is one-of-a-kind,” Dale said. “You have pride in the community and you have pride in this show – and it really shows. My wife Tana and I are committed to Great Bend for many years to come.” It takes about 300 volunteers to pull off this three-day event. These folks make sure the exhibitors have what they need, assist with parking and perform other duties. The Farm, Ranch and Hemp Expo is a great place to check out the latest farm and ranch equipment, but the
show is also a venue for entertainment and educational demonstrations. Each year is different. Some highlights for the Expo include horse training demonstrations, the Great American Tractor Showdown, K-State Research & Extension presentations, low-stress cattle handling, health screenings and a wheat demo field day. The show also highlights industrial hemp components. A variety of concessions and a beer garden will be available as well. Great Bend welcomes everyone to the show. Motels fill up, so, if you’re planning an overnight trip during the next Great Bend Farm, Ranch and Hemp Expo, be sure to book ahead.

SRCA DRAGSTRIP
SOURCE
27
Visit the historic Great Bend Drag Strip Since 1954, organized drag racing in Great Bend has brought auto and speed enthusiasts together at the former B-29 air strip west of the city. The founders called themselves the Gasket Blasters, but soon became a national organization, the Sunflower Rod and Custom Association, or SRCA. In 1955, the drag strip hosted the first-ever National Hot Rod Association National Championship and in 1956 Great Bend hosted the first-ever American Hot Rod Association Championship. A lot has changed at the drag strip over 65 years, with more forthcoming. According to SRCA track president Hank Denning, the track purchased a track rotator from Bandimere Speedway in Denver, CO. It consists of a 110-horsepower John Deere Tractor equipped with an eight foot rotary broom on the front and a rotating attachment on the rear that has four dragster slick tires mounted to it that turn backwards as it goes down the track to apply a rubber to the racing surface. According to Denning, there is only one other track in Kansas that has one, the National Event Track Heartland Motorsports Park in Topeka. “This machine saves us countless hours in preparing the track for a race and also gives us a very outstanding surface,” Denning said. The track also recently purchased a new compound sprayer. According to Denning,
previously the track had a homemade compound sprayer. The new sprayer is the same as used by the NHRA at National Events Tracks and it is all stainless steel with an on board compressor to spray the compound. The new sprayer can be sprayed quickly to minimize down time during events. In May, track operatorsb completed the replacement of the entire drag strip surface. The work was funded through a cost-share agreement between the Kansas Department of Transportation and the City of Great Bend. Denning said the SRCA also contributed funds to help with track updates. According to Denning, the new surface is all concrete with new concrete retaining walls replacing the previous barriers, and running the entire length of the racing surface and shut down. The track’s timing system also got a recent upgrade. According to Denning, the system is the same as what is used in National Event Tracks. All cables are inside metal conduit and fastened to the exterior of the wall with junction boxes. Compulink also installed a 1000 foot mile per hour timer to the track, added Guard Beam at the starting line and Tru-Start into the computer system. Denning sees the track as a vital part of both Great Bend’s past and its future, and is proud of the positive exposure the track brings to the City of Great Bend. “Thousands of racers and spectators
travel to Great Bend each year to compete, test here or just watch the events,” Denning said. “These same people are in the city shopping at local stores, fuel stations, parts stores, restaurants, public facilities, such as the Waterpark and Zoo and staying at the motels.” Denning also indicated much of funds used each year to keep the track operational are invested directly back into the city. As a 501(c) not-for-profit organization, the SRCA Club does not accept public funding. The staff is volunteer, Denning said, which allows any money the club takes in to be invested directly back into the facility. “All of the buildings that have been erected at the complex were all done by the (SRCA) Club and then we gifted them to the City,” Denning said. “Even if SRCA should no longer exist, the city would have a fully operational drag strip they can lease out in the future.” “(We want the drag strip) to be at a caliber you only see at large city drag strip venues such as Topeka or Denver, and to keep a historic part of the American-founded sport of dragg racingg alive,” Denningg said.

Santa Fe Trail Center, Fort Larned
Santa Fe Trail celebrates 200 years
T
he Santa Fe Trail Center Museum & Research Library’s place stands even more prominent in 2021 which marked the 200th anniversary of the Santa Fe Trail. In 1821, the trail was opened as a commercial route between Missouri and New Mexico. The famous “Commerce of the Prairies” developed and grew until the railroad reached Santa Fe in 1880, and the center showcases much of that
history. The Santa Fe Trail Center Museum & Research Library’s mission is to provide visitors with fun and engaging educational opportunities to learn about the historic commerce route known as the Santa Fe Trail and the effect of Westward Expansion on what is now known as central Kansas. The facility, located at 1349 K-156 two miles west of Larned, is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
Paid admission includes all of the main museum galleries, four historic structures, and ranges from $6 for adults to free for those five and under. Group and school tours are available, as is rental of the facilities. The museum has an extensive collection of authentic objects in its collections, including prehistoric American Indian artifacts, trade items from the trail, antique furniture, agricultural equipment, vintage automobiles, tools,
toys, paintings, rugs, clothing, medical equipment, and more. These artifacts help interpret and share the history that has shaped the country and the community. Fort Larned Fort Larned is located at 1767 K-156 six miles west of Larned and is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There is no admission charge. Fort Larned was established to protect travelers, trail commerce, and mail delivery utilizing the Santa Fe Trail.
SANTA FE TRAIL CENTER, FORT LARNED
Fort Larned National Historic Site preserves the buildings, stories, and historical themes associated with Fort Larned. In October of 1859, rising conflicts between American Indians and westward travelers along the Santa Fe Trail prompted the United States army to build a military post to protect and maintain peaceful relations with everyone on
the trail. This first post, called “Camp on Pawnee Fork” and eventually called “Camp Alert,” was set up near Lookout Hill (now Jenkins hill) on the bank of the Pawnee River about five miles from its junction with the Arkansas River. Less than a year later, in June 1860, the fort was moved three miles further west, near the confluence of the Pawnee and Arkansas rivers. At this location, the army constructed sod and adobe buildings, including an officer’s quarters, storehouse and barracks, a guardhouse, a hospital, soldier’s quarters, a bakery, a meat house, and a building housing a blacksmith, carpenter, and saddler shops. Named Fort Larned for Col. Benjamin R. Larned, the US Army paymaster, this fort would serve as one of the most important defense posts along the Santa Fe Trail. Between 1866 and 1868, the government replaced the original sod and adobe buildings of Fort Larned with more durable stone and timber

L
arned Country Club superintendent Dan Collins is happy the 2021 golf season arrived. The 2020 season unfolded like a biblical battle. Larned’s girls had their postseason stopped in October by quarantine restrictions under coach Collins. Collins underwent shoulder surgery, and shortly thereafter, he missed work when he endured the illness in October. Collins worked the majority of the course maintenance in 2020 when the coronavirus forced safety restrictions. With spring high school and junior college sports canceled, the course enjoyed a busy spring and summer. “When quarantines hit, the golf course was the busiest place in town. Golf was the one sport you could play,” he said. “We enjoyed good local play.” Club President Chris Froetschner oversaw various club improvements. The primary project was repaving a new concrete parking lot. New fencing provided a convenient barrier between
the golf course and parking. The city of Larned provided manpower and materials and donations reduced the overall price tag. “It’s been a really nice addition for the club and city when there are golf tournaments staged there,” he said. Taking expert care of Larned Country Club comes naturally for Collins. He’s spent the past 12 summers serving as full-time golf course superintendent. Plentiful rain has provided work for a crew that features Steve Webster, Luke Wilson and Larry Wilson. “It’s been a great growing season. We’ve stayed busy mowing. It’s the best grass-growing year I can remember.” Memorials from Clint Vratil and Steven Gillett provided money in 2020 that purchased trees which were planted between Nos. 1 and 6. The golf course property is owned by the city of Larned, which pays for the water and irrigation
system. Golf carts and cart shed rentals are available. Collins said Josh Kraisinger, Larned’s parks and cemetery supervisor, anchors support from the city of Larned. “Josh gets equipment prepared, and performs anything mechanical,” Collins said. The driving range stretches to 330 yards. Green fees are $20 during weekdays and $25 on the weekend. It is a well-maintained course featuring small and sloped Bentgrass greens with bluegrass and perennial rye fairways. Three of the sloping fairways are doglegs and tree-lined. Water hazards come into play on three holes. The nine-hole Larned Country Club layout features 2,747 yards of golf from the longest tee for a par of 35. The course rating is 33.9 and it has a slope rating of 106. LARNED DISC GOLF — The city of Larned gave permission to set up an 18-hole disc golf course several years ago that is next to the Larned Community Center building. “A group of guys approached me about starting a disc golf course, and I Iiked the idea,” said Mike Seeman, Larned Recreation Commission director. “The city council approved the idea. There’s a group of guys who play disc golf about every day, no matter what the weather is.” Seeman said the players use multiple discs to enhance longer or more precise shots. “They use a lot of different discs on various shots,” he said. “Several times a year, they run their own tournaments.”

A
ccording to the Kansas Geological Survey at the University of Kansas, the earliest production oil well in Pawnee County was drilled in July 1936. The operator was Simpson Oil Company
and it was located in the northeast corner of the county, northwest of the City of Pawnee Rock. Located in what is known as the Arbuckle Formation, the well was 3,841 feet deep. The well was plugged in October 1939.
The KSGS reported that in 2020, 155 oil wells produced 176,325 barrels of oil. In addition, 79 wells produced 406,870 mcf of natural gas (one mcf equals 1,000 cubic feet). As of April 2021, 135 wells had pumped 58,459 barrels,
and 69 wells had extracted 58,459 mcf of natural gas. There are 107 active oil and gas fields in Pawnee County. Kansas total oil production for 2020 was 28,257,474 barrels. For gas, the total was 164,248,436 mcf.

ACHIEVE REHAB
They want to help
I
n November of 2006, David and Karla Gonzales opened Achieve Rehab, Central Kansas’ only outpatient rehab facility that specializes in the treatment of all conditions of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. David is an occupational therapist and a certified hand therapist. Karla is a certified occupational therapy assistant. David and Karla have a combined experience in rehabilitation of over 40 years. “We got into occupational therapy to help people, and this
is our philosophy at Achieve Rehab: to provide hands-on expertise, using the latest, most effective treatment methods available to help people get back to their active lifestyle and what means most to them,” their philosophy statement reads. “We want our patients to have less pain with more function, and learn how to prevent future injuries. We are committed to giving our patients the latest most up to date methods of therapy, and the personal one on one touch people need the most.”
Whether it is muscle or joint injuries, post-surgery rehab of the shoulder, elbow, wrist or hand, a return-towork program, fall prevention programs, or educating you about preventing pain or injury, the staff at Achieve Rehab is committed to your satisfaction. They serve Great Bend, along with Barton, Pawnee,
Rush, Rice, Stafford and Russell counties. They offer free consultations to identify painful conditions and to determine how to best help. Their office can be contacted at 620-792-2111. Their hours are 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, with other appointments available to fit one’s schedule.
I just had shoulder surgery... Now where do I go for therapy?
I fell off my bike... Now that my doctor said it’s time for hand therapy, where do I go?
A Certified hand therapist is THE expert for any Orthopedic Rehab, from shoulder to hand. Here’s what our patients say about Achieve Rehab: “I had a rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder. I was afraid I’d never use my arm again. I am so pleased that I have the full rotation of my right arm. I would fully recommend David’s professional expertise to anyone.” -BL “I caught my hand in an auger. After surgery, I went to Achieve Rehab. Through weeks of hand therapy, I could brush my teeth again! We are very lucky in our area to have such a hand expert. I am grateful that he always encouraged me.” -MT

in Larned offers multiple specialty services on-site
T
he hospital in Larned has always prided itself on being progressive in finding innovative ways to offer even more healthcare options close to home, said the leaders of two local specialty services. Megan Donecker, sleep lab director and registered polysomnographer, leads the Sleep and Diagnostic Center at The University of Kansas Health System Pawnee Valley Campus, while Heather Holaday, nurse practitioner with a doctor of nursing practice degree, offers wound care at the facility. Sleep Center The Sleep and Diagnostic Center offers a full range of services and is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. “Sleep apnea is the most common disorder we see at the lab but we also offer a home-based test for this condition,” Donecker said. “Sleep apnea is a general term for breathing problems that occur during sleep, including breathing cessation many times during the night.” The sleep center also offers in-house tests for insomnia, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder, to name a few. The two sleep rooms are comparable

to hotel suites and offer many comforts of home, Donecker noted. Amenities include a queen-size, pillow-top mattress, large recliner chair, large bathroom with spacious shower, television and a safe for personal belongings. The home-based sleep apnea test also is available through the center. “If a home sleep test is ordered, we will supply the information and equipment,” Donecker said. “The patient wears a disposable device on a wrist in the comfort of their own home.”
Wound Care Holaday serves wound-care patients at the Pawnee Valley Campus hospital, 923 Carroll, and HaysMed, in addition to caring for people of all ages in the family medicine practice at Pawnee Valley Medical Associates, 713 W. 11th. “Wound care is crucial for people suffering from conditions such as diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, venous or arterial ulcers, burns and non-healing surgical incisions,” Holaday outlined. “Inpatient and outpatient wound treatments can prevent or address infection, ensure adequate healing and reduce the healing time associated with wound closure.” Holaday completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Pawnee Valley Campus and chose to stay at the hospital in her hometown area. Like Donecker, Holaday is impressed with the “amazing facilities we have here. We offer a wide variety of services that benefit the overall health of the community right in our own backyard.” These specialty services are just two examples of the hospital going the extra mile and taking local healthcare to the next level, Holaday said, noting a sleep lab and wound care are not often available in smaller communities.

Pawnee County
Humane Society The Pawnee County Humane Society Inc. is a 501(c)3 charity. Its mission is to prevent suffering, neglect, abuse and cruelty to animals through community awareness and education, promoting responsible pet ownership and ending the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals in Pawnee County. Andrea Buhler-Lartz has served as shelter manager since 2017. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, out of respect and concern for the health and well-being of the human staff and volunteers, the decision was made in March of 2020 to close the animal shelter to the public until further notice. “Pawnee County Humane Society will fully reopen to the public when it feels it is safe to do so,” Buhler-Lartz said in July. At that time PCHS did not have a reopen date. Cats and dogs available for adoption can be seen on the website, www.pawneehumane. com. People can call 620-2858510 to talk to staff and make an appointment. Applications for adoptions are needed first and can be found on the website. Services available The humane society has $50 vouchers from a PetSmart grant that can be used at either Frick Vet Services or Larned Veterinary Clinic. Vouchers can be used by Pawnee County pet owners to offset the costs of spaying, neutering,
wellness vaccinations, rabies vaccinations, flea/tick/ heartworm preventatives, and more. PCHS still gives clickers and clicker training information to dog adopters, should they choose to take them. Inmate program ends, fosters needed Back in 2006, the PCHS entered into an agreement with the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility to use inmates as dog handlers who provide basic socialization and obedience training to dogs that have been surrendered to PCHS, helping them become more adoptable. In July of 2021, Buhler-Lartz announced that LCMHF has temporarily suspended the dog program. While she hopes that is a temporary situation, she said more foster families and volunteers at the shelter are needed. “We have so many animals that need permanent or temporary homes,” BuhlerLartz posted on Facebook. “Not everyone can adopt and I get that. Not everyone can foster and I understand that. But we do need help with animal care at the shelter. “Is it work? Of course. We have to clean. Who wants to live in a smelly cage? But you also get to play and cuddle. They appreciate the cleanliness and attentiveness. “Is it emotional? Sure. But most are better off at the shelter rather than starving or
being dumped. I assure you that not every animal is meant for every home but you can love them while they wait at the shelter.” Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) program In 2009, the PCHS started a community-wide Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) program to control the feral cat population in Larned. TNR programs reduce the number of feral cats by trapping the animals, spaying or neutering them, and then returning them to
their neighborhood. PCHS believes the TNR program is the best option for controlling the feral cat population. Feral cats are cats that have returned to living like a wild animal – either because they were born to a feral mother or because they were abandoned by previous owners. For more information on how PCHS can help with feral cats, contact PCHS board member Chasitty Solko by calling 620285-9387. Or call the PCHS number, 620-285-8510.

Rehabilitating for the future Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility meeting needs of inmates
L
arned Correctional Mental Health Facility (LCMHF) was built in response to a 1989 federal court order which directed the KDOC to meet the long-term needs of mentally ill inmates. Construction of the 150-bed facility began on the grounds of the Larned State Hospital in 1991 and the facility was dedicated in December of that same year. The facility received its first residents on January 22, 1992. LCMHF currently includes two units; the Central Unit which has the capacity to house 310 male residents, and the South Unit, which has the capacity to house 304 male residents. Central Unit is a programming facility, housing medium and maximum custody, general population residents. Emphasis is placed on residents needing Education (GED) and/or Vocational Education, empowering residents toward successful reintegration through education and career training. In addition, qualifying residents
“A safer Kansas through effective Correctional services”
receive programming consistent with their specific risk need area(s), such as substance abuse, attitude, family/marital, and financial. The South Unit is a minimum custody, work facility. These residents provide support services to LCMHF and the Larned State Hospital, holding jobs that simulate the regular hours and routines usually
associated with employment found in the community. Resident employee positions in Non-Prison Based and Prison Based Industries Programs are also available, allowing residents to begin saving and preparing for eventual release, and to begin paying for expenses such as room and board, transportation, court costs, fines, restitution, child
support and taxes, while they are still incarcerated. Additionally, there is an opportunity for South Unit residents to participate in educational programming and facility programming, most notably, GED, Substance Abuse Program, Sex Offender Treatment Program, and Thinking 4 Change. Tim Easley was selected to serve as warden by Secretary Jeff Zmuda on March 1, 2020.

PAWNEE HEIGHTS USD 496 100 W. Grand, Rozel, KS 67574 620-527-4212 www.phtigers.net Pawnee Heights USD 496 in Rozel and Burdett has a tradition of excellence. A low student to teacher ratio (7 to 1) provides for more one-on-one instructional opportunities in the classroom. The staff encourages academic excellence in the classroom and good sportsmanship in extracurricular activities. The Kansas State Department of Education’s 2019-2020 accountability report notes that the district received Kansans Can Star Recognition at the bronze level for high school graduation and for ensuring that students are academically prepared for postsecondary education.

awnee Heights USD 496 started the 2021-22 school year with a new superintendent of schools and a new principal for the K-6 elementary grades. The new superintendent will work half-time and the new principal at the elementary level will fill a position that last year was accomplished on a part-time basis. The new superintendent, Brian Spencer, brings 19 years of experience as a superintendent to the job. He retired in 2020, but after a year of trying other things, found that he missed the school experiences and decided to work again on a parttime or temporary basis. That level of participation was exactly what the Board of Education at Pawnee Heights was wanting and needing. Previous to his retirement, Spencer was the superintendent at Central Heights
USD 288 in Richmond for five years and before that was the superintendent for 11 years at Lyndon. Spencer plans to spend Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the District Office in Rozel but admits, “This whole thing is changeable. We are changing the model of how things have been done but we are open to changing to what is needed at the time.” He also stated, “of course, things come up and I will have to adjust to what is needed but we all learned over the past couple of years, due to COVID, that a lot can be accomplished with Zoom meetings and other remote methods.” The new principal of the K-6 elementary is Renee Buntain of Great Bend. She comes to Pawnee Heights with 31 years of experience in the education field, most of it in the elementary levels. For the past two years she worked for the Kansas Department of Education, serving western Kansas in MTSS Literacy training. She has a Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction. These changes at Pawnee Heights will make the education process more “kid focused,” Spencer said. “We are excited about these new things for Pawnee Heights and look forward to a great year.”

The Fort Larned USD 495 Board of Education approved a Return to School Plan in August of 2020 and the Pawnee County Commission approved a Public Health Order that adopted a Risk Assessment Matrix in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The commission approved four levels of risk: Green, Yellow, Orange and Red. USD 495 utilized that matrix along with guidance from the Kansas State Department of Education in determining which tier within its Return to School Plan would be implemented within its school buildings. Masks were required but became optional before 2020-2021 ended. In August of 2021, school resumed with no mask requirement, although they were recommended. However, federal regulations did require masks in buses and other vehicles transporting more than one person. Larned High School signed its first-ever FFA charter during a ceremony on Monday, March 29, 2021. “Although LHS instituted FFA the year before, COVID prevented them from signing their charter last spring,” said FFA sponsor Brice Gibson. “State FFA officers Kiran Elam and Bailey Sipes offered words of excitement and advice for Larned students who are promoters of all areas of agriculture, reminding the students that FFA also affords a place where they can learn public speaking skills, interview skills, and leadership skills.” Gibson also said the Larned
FFA will be included with other Kansas FFA charters at the state office. Larned’s FFA officers include: President, Halle Barker; Vice-President, Trevor Bartz; Treasurer, John Stedje; Sentinel, Dillen Hook and Reporter, Ella McNett. Some of the events that were missed in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic resumed in 2021. Kansas Fitness Day for third graders is typically held in April at Fort Larned National Historic Site but it was canceled in 2020. So, in 2021, third and fourth graders attended. Fort Larned Elementary School Principal Catrina McGurk noted, “With the help of Fort Larned volunteers and LMS and LHS students, our third graders get to tour and learn more about the Fort and participate in different fitness activities back in the 1800s. We always appreciate the support from Fort Larned in making this happen.” Likewise, the annual 4th Grade Kids Ag Day wasn’t held in May of 2020. So, in May of 2021, more than 100 fourth and fifth graders from Fort Larned USD 495 and Pawnee Heights USD 496 attended that event at the J.A. Haas Building. The final day of school was May 19, 2021. School wrapped up with Life Skills Day at the middle school, where the students learned to change a tire, make a budget, table manners, basic sewing, changing diapers, and many more skills. Pawnee County Co-op Association helped 6th and 7th graders celebrate their last day of school with root beer floats.

Library Jordaan Memorial Library is committed to the community and its patrons. Throughout the year, the library offers story times and reading clubs for boys and girls, a summer reading program, crafting, etc., as well as online services. If your child lives in the 67550 zip code, you can register for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library at Jordaan Library. Children enrolled in this program receive a free book every month until their fifth birthday. The time you spend reading with your child opens their mind to faraway places, exciting adventures, and sets them on the pathway to an interest in lifelong learning. This program is made possible through the generous sponsorship of The United Way of Central Kansas and community members. History The first mention of a library in Larned is found in an advertisement from an 1879 newspaper, noting that a reading room was provided in the basement of Krouch’s store. The original Cummins Memorial Library, also located where the library stands today, was opened on January 1, 1915. The three-story red brick and limestone structure housed the city offices, council room, and women’s clubroom for many years. Planning for the new building, the present Jordaan Memorial Library, began in 1969, and construction started in January of 1973. Today, the structure has

Pawnee County
History
P
awnee County Kansas was created in 1867 and named for the Pawnee Indians, who inhabited the area as their hunting grounds. The land recognized as Pawnee County was a hightraffic area long before its boundaries were officially plotted and a permanent settlement began in 1872. Pawnee County’s most recognized citizen is Clyde W. Tombaugh (1906-1997), who discovered the planet Pluto in February 1930. Tombaugh graduated from Burdett High School in 1925. He discovered Pluto while working at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Ariz. Other notable Pawnee County natives include Hall of Fame coach Gene Keady, former Purdue basketball coach; Ralph Terry, former New York Yankees pitcher; Gary Patterson, Texas Christian University
head football coach; John Zook, All-Pro NFL player and All Big 8 player at the University of Kansas; Mitch Webster, major league baseball outfielder; Hal Patterson, Canadian football player; and Belle Jennings Benchley, past director of the
San Diego Zoo. Pawnee County currently includes the cities of Garfield, Burdett, Rozel and Larned. The buffalo and Indians roamed freely for centuries before the white soldiers arrived in 1859 to establish a military post at Fort Larned to assist in commerce and travel along the Santa Fe Trail. George Custer, Kit Carson, William Cody, Black Kettle, Satanta, and Yellow Bear were but a few of the legendary people frequenting the fort. The establishment of Fort Larned on the Santa Fe Trail was significant not only for defense of the trail, but also to assist settlers in the area. The Hancock-Custer expedition, referring to General
Winfield S. Hancock and Colonel George Custer, arrived at Fort Larned on April 7, 1867, and the two men conducted meetings with Cheyenne Chiefs Tall Bull and White Horse in an attempt to satisfy Indian displeasure at white settlers. The meeting delayed problems along the Santa Fe Trail. It was Henry Booth (18381898), retired captain of Company L, 11th Kansas Calvary, who petitioned the state for official organization of the county in 1872, naming it after the familiar Pawnee River as well as recognizing the Pawnee Indians who inhabited the area historically. Booth served in the Kansas Legislature, serving as the Legislature’s Speaker of the House.
PAWNEE COUNTY HISTORY
The organization of Pawnee County is colorful. A colonizer from Chicago, Dr. Samuel Grant Rodgers, had arrived in the Pawnee County area and he and his associates had laid out a town, naming it Petersburg in honor of an official of the Santa Fe Railroad, T.J. Peters. Today it is called Kinsley. Realizing that Petersburg was a threat to Larned, as both towns were within the original boundaries of Pawnee County, Booth and other Larned promoters moved at once toward organization of the county. A law passed that same year by the Legislature prescribing that a petition asking for organization of a new county was to be signed by “40 householders who were legal electors of the county.” There were not 40 legal electors in Pawnee County, but Booth and A.H. Boyd secured the signatures by an extra-legal procedure. One report said they stopped an immigrant train that was toiling westward along the Santa Fe Trail and forced the men in the party to sign their petition. Booth forwarded the petition to Gov. James M. Harvey recommending F.C. Hawkins as a good man to take the census. Governor Harvey accepted Booth’s recommendation and appointed Hawkins.
Nine days later Hawkins finished his enumeration and filed his certified report with the governor. It showed a population of 674 men, women and children, an amazing figure in view of the difficulty Captain Booth had experienced in finding 40 legal electors to sign his petition. Dr. Rodgers was in Chicago recruiting settlers for his colony while Booth and his associates were taking the preliminary steps toward county organization. It is assumed that Dr. Rodgers went to Topeka and that he registered a protest with the governor and secretary of state, but they must have convinced him that nothing could or should be done to delay the organization of Pawnee County. Gov. James M. Harvey’s proclamation admitting Pawnee as the 65th county was dated November 4, 1872 by Henry Booth, A.H. Boyd, Timothy McCarthy, and George J. Cox. Larned became the permanent county seat of Pawnee County in an election held on October 7, 1873. Dr. Rodgers and Booth were opposing candidates for state representative. Rodgers won the seat, but Booth, although denied membership in the Legislature, had considerable influence in that body. The boundaries of Pawnee County were changed,

cutting 12 miles off the south, which left out Dr. Rodgers’ town, Petersburg, and adding six miles on the north, taken from Rush County and six miles on the east, taken from Stafford County. This, Booth observed, “brought Larned nearer the center of the county and strengthened it as the county seat.” It also cut off Petersburg and practically every other town in the county. When in 1874, a petition was presented to the Legislature asking that the original boundaries of Pawnee County be restored, the Legislature again came to the rescue of Booth and his county seat by returning one township to Pawnee – the one containing Garfield – and creating Edwards County from the “orphan townships.” Interesting sites in the county include the nine original buildings at Fort Larned, the Pawnee County Courthouse (former), the Eagle Optic Building, the Masonic Building, the Campbell House (1886) and the Patterson House (circa 1876). The Larned Presbyterian Church was organized on July 15, 1873. The first county fair was held in 1876. Currently it is a 4-H fair. The first school district was Pawnee Number 1, formed in Larned on June 24, 1873.

ituated on K-156 23 miles west of Larned, Burdett began its life as “Brown’s Grove”, named for Dr. Gallatin Brown who staked out the townsite in 1876. In 1879 Wright and Johnson built a flour mill with a dam on the Pawnee River furnishing power for the machinery. It was the first in Kansas west of Hutchinson and was in operation for eight years. The railroad was surveyed from Larned in 1885 and the first train arrived in 1886. The tracks came in a half mile south of “Brown’s Grove” so business moved to the railroad and the town was renamed “Burdett” by the railroad officials for a famous writer and humorist Robert Jones Burdette.

bell now hangs in the Garfield City Park. That bell has an interesting, and presidential, story. But, first some background. The first settlers of Garfield came from Ohio, not Sweden, as was once believed. The Swedes came a few years later. In January 1873, two months after Pawnee County was organized by proclamation of Gov. James Harvey, members of the Ohio colony filed on about 30 pieces of land near the present site of Garfield, then known as Camp Criley. Camp Criley was established in the late summer of 1872 as a supply station for workmen building the Santa Fe Railroad. It was named for Capt. J.D. Criley, superintendent of
the construction. In March 1873, the advance guard of the Ohio colony arrived. During the summer of 1873,
others joined the growing settlement on the Arkansas River. The first religious services were held in the town that

summer, the Methodists forming a Sunday school class and the Congregationalists organizing a church. Later a Union Sabbath school was established. The Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized in 1879. But, the founders changed the name of the town from Criley to Garfield in honor of James A. Garfield, the congressman from their old district in Ohio, and later president of the United States. When Mr. Garfield was informed of this honor, he wrote that he would present a bell to the first church erected in the town. The bell hung in the Congregational Church from 1875 to 1959 and is now part of a monument in the City Park. The park also features a bandstand-style gazebo. City of
Larned Now, the commerce hub for Pawnee County, Larned is situated along the Santa Fe Trail which was a thoroughfare for early expeditions, traders, and the livestock movement. The city was laid out in 1873 and the first post office was established at Larned in 1872. It drew its name from nearby Fort Larned and named for Colonel Benjamin F. Larned, U.S. Army paymaster from July 1854 to his death Sept. 6, 1862. From 1821 to 1880, the Santa Fe Trail was one of America’s most important trade routes, carrying millions of dollars
worth of goods annually in commercial traffic between Independence, Missouri and Santa Fe, N.M. In 2021, the trail’s 200th anniversary was observed. A military establishment was needed along the trail and in October 1859, Camp Alert was constructed. It was renamed Camp on the Pawnee in 1860 and later that same year became known as Fort Larned. The Fort became the principal guardian of Santa Fe Trail commerce. Today, Fort Larned National Historic Site is a part of the National Park Service. It was
designated an historic site in 1964 and underwent major renovations in the years that followed. It is one of the few frontier forts where the original buildings have been preserved. In addition, the Santa Fe Trail was established as a national historic trail in May 1987 and trail ruts made by the countless ox and mule drawn wagons can still be seen near the Fort.
The Fort is located at 1767 K-156, west of Larned. Also situated near Larned are the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility which falls under the Kansas Department of Corrections and Larned State Hospital which falls under the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services. Both are major employers for the area.

Great Bend Appliance, Furniture & SleepSource celebrates 23 years of business “We have a phenomenal staff who understands customer courtesy. They know their product and how to treat a customer the way that they want to be treated,” Great Bend Appliance, Furniture & SleepSource owner Dale E. Pruter said. This philosophy has served the business well as they just celebrated 23 years of business in Great Bend and the surrounding communities. “We started out with just my wife and me, and have expanded to 21 employees as the business has grown,” Pruter said. They recently hired a second Service Technician, Eric Johnson, to keep up with the demand for service and installations. Both Steven Nagel and Johnson are certified technicians trained at Fred’s Service Academy in Madison, Ohio. The store’s franchise agreement with Brand Source is the backbone of its variety and competitive edge. Brand Source collaborates with 4,000 individual business owners across the United States to buy brand-market appliances and furniture. “BrandSource gives the independent owners the visibility of the bigger box stores because we carry the same brands,” Pruter said. “It levels the playing field with the bigger companies. Some people come in and need it all and we can make truly competitive package deals.” Appliance service has also been a big part of their success. Service Tech Steven Nagel was trained to service all Whirlpool, Maytag and Kitchenaid appliances, graduating as valedictorian from Fred’s Appliance Repair Academy in Madison, Ohio. “We are happy and proud to have such a quality young service tech who knows how to treat customers and holds

customer service as their number one priority,” Pruter said. In addition to service, they offer delivery, installation and set up as well as in-home design and consulting services for customers. Great Bend Appliance showcases Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana appliances. The Sleep Source offers beds, mattresses, headboards and sheets. Serta’s gel-infused iComfort bed is a best seller, and they offer Corsicana and the new Tempurpedic family of products, plus a new line of Sealy hybrid mattresses. The England furniture division is a La-Z-Boy company that offers many different furniture products. Additions over the years include: Oreck vacuum cleaners, SunHeat infrared heaters and LG, Samsung, Panasonic and Toshiba flat-panel televisions. “We are always looking for that next niche in the market,” Pruter said. “We try to have something for everyone. That’s how we succeed – by diversifying and listening to customer requests and needs.” The business was honored as Outstanding Business of the Year by the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce in 2005, and was awarded the BrandSource Dealer of the year in 2005. Employees include co-owner Sherry Pruter, Kenny Pruter, Steven Nagel, Rachel Nagel, Eric Rostine, Eric Johnson, Eric Juergensen, Audra Rostine, Chonny Simonson, Teresa Wondra, Shelly Post, Jeni Doan, Pablo Ibarra, Tammy Dreese, Daniel Hammeke, Chris Jeska, Kevin Wondra, Roland Nagel, Kenny Harman, Grant Doan and Sue Johnson.

GREAT BEND CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU
The Great Bend Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) is located inside the front of the Great Bend Events Center at 3111 10th Street. The office is perfectly located with the Events Center because CVB staff books and bids on big events and conventions for the Events Center and Great Bend in general. The Events Center is designated as a Kansas Travel Information Center which partners with State Travel & Tourism which is a resource for the State of Kansas tourism opportunities. Since 2019, major renovations have been a goal for the Great Bend Events Center. In 2021, the City officially opened the newly renovated back area as breakout rooms, extra office space and it now is the home of the Great Bend Economic Development (a separate entity working to better Great Bend). The next goal is to completely update the front bathrooms. The CVB is part of Community Coordinator/CVB Director Christina Hayes’ department. CVB staff includes Emily Goad, Visitor Coordinator and Missy Pfloughouft, Visitor Representative. The CVB is 100% funded by Transient Guest Tax from hotel stays and 1% of that Guest Tax helps fund the Events Center along with revenue from events. The Great Bend City Council still strives to make the Events Center a premier event location for our area to improve the quality of life of residents! Larami Parsons, Administrative Assistant is another staff member that is located down at City Hall. The staff works hard to promote Great Bend in various ways. Christina’s goals for her department include getting Great Bend’s attractions, events, fun things to do and places to stay out to a bigger area of the state, Recruitment of new conventions, tournaments and meetings to town. Continue to provide hospitality program for hotels, gas stations, businesses and doctors’ offices so the front lines of our community know what’s happening in town. Every two years the CVB will design and distribute a new Visitor Guide for Great Bend, get our community’s name out there as a real presence in the state, effectively market and promote the Events Center as the premier location for Events and work with the area to bring people to our wonderful town!

pen year-round (except Christmas and Thanksgiving days) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Great Bend’s Brit Spaugh Zoo is fun and educational — and admission is free! The zoo is dedicated to the conservation, preservation and rescue of animals and to the education and entertainment of children and adults. The zoo staff also treats wounded birds of prey, known as raptors. Recent improvements In 2021 the zoo opened a new exhibit inside its main building, The Raptor Center. It features 26 small animals, including those that were previously housed in the Education Building, as well as freshwater
and saltwater aquariums. The new exhibit provides an improved viewing experience for visitors and better environmental control for the animals. Meanwhile, the “Ed Shed” is undergoing renovation and will eventually return to its original purpose as a room for educational programs, meetings and parties. Outdoors, construction was finished on the Bill McKown Memorial Pavilion, a handicap accessible gazebo located next to a freshwater pond. Visitors can enjoy this shaded area and feed the fish and waterfowl. A sidewalk was added around the reptile building where the tortoises and larger snakes are housed. Zoo Supervisor and Curator Ashley Burdick noted that this
much-needed improvement now allows better accessibility for those in wheelchairs and strollers. New animals A long-awaited addition arrived in 2020, when the bison exhibit opened. Like the grizzly bear exhibit that opened in 2018, this modern addition was made possible with a grant from the Dorothy M. Morrison Foundation. In 2020, the zoo added a two-dimensional, 7.5-foot tall bear sign near the exhibit to illustrate how big grizzly bears can be. Other new animals added in 2021 include a green tree python, a pot-bellied pig, an axolotl (a relative of the tiger salamander), and two capybaras — the largest rodent species on Earth.

Wetlands Waterpark W
hen summer arrives, there’s one local attraction that’s guaranteed to make a summer splash: the Great Bend aquatic center – Wetlands Waterpark. Weather permitting, the pool is open from 12:30-5:30 p.m. daily from Memorial Day weekend in May to mid-August. Once things heat up, the pool is also open for Family Nights from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It’s located in Brit Spaugh Park at 2303 Main St., next to the Brit Spaugh Zoo. More than just a municipal swimming pool, the water park’s fun wetlands artwork and big play features make it a unique, regional attraction. The pool features seven water slides, zerodepth entry for small children, spray features and floatables that separate the deep end from the shallow end, a climbing wall and a 300 gallon tipping bucket that periodically spills onto those who dare to stand under it. For those taking a break in the shaded areas, there are brightly colored umbrellas and a concession stand. Visitors can also find green grass and a bathhouse for changing. Admission to the Wetlands is $3 for

youths 3-17 years old, $4 for adults 18 and older, and free for children under 3. Admission on Family Nights is $2, and discount passes good for 15 visits are available for $40. The aquatic center is also available for private parties and special events. For more information call 620-792-1516 during the pool season. Outside of the pool season contact Parks Superintendent Scott Keeler at the City Office, 620-793-4111. Swimming lessons The Great Bend Recreation Commission offers summer swimming lessons taught by American Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructors and GBRC water safety aides. For more information contact Recreation Program Coordinator Megan Hammeke by calling 620-792-2604. Summer Jobs The pool supplies dozens of summer jobs for persons 15 years of age and older. For 2021 there were 35 lifeguards and 10 concession staff. To apply for a lifeguard position, you must be at least 16 years old and able to complete the Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Class before the pool season starts. This
class is taught by the Great Bend Recreation Commission over spring break. For more information, call Pool Manager Megan Hammeke at the GBRC, 620-793-3755, or email mhammeke@gbrec.net Employment applications are available at the City Administration Building at 1209 Williams St. The selection for these seasonal positions takes place during the months of January and February, so for best results submit your application early. The City of Great Bend provides equal employment opportunity to all individuals. For more information call 620-793-4111. Before and after the season ends After the pool is filled and before it opens for the summer, it is often a training site. The lifeguards arrive early for training, but they aren’t the only ones. The Great Bend Fire Department’s search and rescue team members sometimes use the pool for dive training. Just after the pool closes in August, there is a one-day event for canines and their human friends, “Bark at the Water Park.” Admission goes toward upkeep of the dog park in Veterans Memorial Park, another city feature.
