THE JAMES E. LONGNECKER COMPETITON POOL

JAMES E. LONGNECKER POOL

The James E. Longnecker Competition Pool is one of the nation’s top small-college aquatic facilities. The 8-lane facility is regarded as one of the fastest pools in the region and is reserved solely for use by the College’s swimming and diving and water polo athletes. The Pool features two one-meter diving boards and one three-meter board as well as five Power Rack stations. An eight-lane electronic Colorado Timing System is integrated into the pool and scoreboard. The scoreboard features eight lines for results, three lines for event/heat and scoring and a scrolling line that shows lane-by-lane results. The shallow end of the Pool is seven feet; thus the facility is able to host several Collegiate Water Polo Association events that are restricted from “shallow-deep” pools. Since 2000, Grove City College has hosted several CWPA championship events. The James E. Longnecker Competition Pool is 25 yards in length and 56 feet wide. It holds 408,913 gallons of water. The seating capacity of the Pool area is approximately 400. The Pool has been home to the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships since 1990.

She will work with a veteran diving squad this winter. Last year, Grove City placed three men in the top eight in 1-meter diving at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships. In 2010, diver Kyle Grubbs provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships while setting a new school record in 1-meter diving. He earned the conference’s Most Valuable Diver award for the 2009-10 season and Fritz received the conference’s Men’s Diving Coach of the Year honor. In 2007, Fritz helped junior Joe Riddell provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships. Riddell and Grubbs placed 1-2 in the PAC Championships in 2007-08. SEASON PREVIEW

SEASON PREVIEW The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team enters the 2013-14 season with high expectations and a primary goal in sight: a return to the top of the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Grove City won five consecutive conference championships until a runner-up finish last winter as a mere 13 points separated the Wolverines from an unprecedented sixth straight crown. With 15 lettermen back in the fold, Grove City looks to be in prime position for a run at the conference title. Head coach Dave Fritz, now in his 12th season at the helm, will rely on a six-man senior class this season. Senior Dave Bossert returns for his fourth season after capturing conference titles in the 400 individual medley, 500 free and 1650 free last season. He will help lead Grove City's distance corps this winter. Senior Christian Dehli will be counted on in the backstroke and butterfly this winter. A three-year letterman, Dehli will likely also be an integral part of Grove City's sprint and medley relays. Senior Louis Gabriele owns the school record in the 200 breaststroke and will likely be Grove City's top entry in the breaststroke again this year. He provisionally qualified for the 2013 NCAA Championships in the 200 breaststroke. All three men earned First Team All-PAC honors last year. Senior E.J. Leuschner earned Second Team All-PAC recognition last year and will join Bossert in the distance events. He is a three-year letterman for Grove City. Senior Noah Walker also earned All-PAC Second Team distinction last year and returns in butterfly and individual medley for Grove City. Walker is a three-year letterman and joins Dehli and Gabriele as team co-captains for this season. Senior Jay Wallen returns in the freestyle events for the Wolverines and will look to break into the lineup on a regular basis this year. Three junior swimmers and two junior divers also return this season. Sprinter Caleb McKusick emerged as a sophomore last year and earned All-PAC First Team status while butterflier Ben Satre merited Second Team All-Conference. Junior Grant Wilt lettered in the breaststroke and individual medley last year and is also expected to be a key contributor this year. Divers Richie Klimek and Karter Gagliardo return after receiving All-PAC recognition last year. Klimek earned First Team status after placing third in both diving events at the conference championships. Gagliardo captured Second Team honors. Both are two-year lettermen. Sophomore backstroker Jim Bossert returns after missing last season to injury. He is expected to be a key cog after capturing Second Team All-PAC recognition two years ago as a freshman.

Junior Richie Klimek is one of the top returning divers in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

Junior Caleb McKusick will be a key contributor in the sprints in 2013-14 for the Wolverines. Four other sophomore letterwinners are back and will look to further cement their respective status in the Grove City lineup. Sophomore Tim Bergquist returns in the breaststroke while classmate Stephen Cratsa will strengthen the Wolverines in the butterfly. Sprinter Jordan Dehli and backstroker Nick Wargo are back for their second season after making significant contributions as rookies. Also back are sophomores Josh Blasdell, Benjamin Marasco and Shady Tadros. Several newcomers will also look to break into the lineup this winter. Grove City begins its season October 19 at the Clarion Fall Classic. 6

2012-13 REVIEW

The 2012-13 season featured numerous highlights for the Grove City College men's swimming and diving program as several standout performers earned richly-deserved recognition. Although the Wolverines fell a mere 13 points shy of their sixth consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference title, the season still will be regarded as one of the more memorable campaigns in recent history. Junior Dave Bossert earned the High Point Award at the season-ending James E. Longnecker Invitational/Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships after winning three individual events at the three-day meet. Meanwhile, junior Louis Gabriele smashed the school record in the 200 breaststroke with an NCAA Championships qualifying time of 2 minutes, 5.99 seconds. Senior Eric Fairchild earned Academic All-District recognition from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) following the season. Bossert, Fairchild and Gabriele all earned First Team All-PAC honors, as did junior C.P. Dehli, freshman Jordan Dehli, sophomore Richie Klimek, sophomore Caleb McKusick and senior Ian Smyth. Sophomore Karter Gagliardo, junior E.J. Leuschner, sophomore Ben Satre, senior Adam Walker and junior Noah Walker all earned Second Team All-Conference.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

PROGRAM HISTORY

PROGRAM HISTORY Few swimming and diving programs can match the tradition of excellence that has developed at Grove City College since the program’s 1937 inception. With 58 all-time NCAA All-Americans, five national champions, 563 victories and 61 straight winning seasons, one can see that success is a way of life at Grove City. Yet, numbers alone do not tell the story of the Grove City men’s swimming and diving program. The program has grown from humble beginnings into one of the nation’s finest over the past 70-plus years. Intercollegiate swimming and diving at Grove City College began during the 1937-38 academic year. During the program’s first five seasons, Grove City managed just eight total wins. World War II interrupted the program for four seasons but Grove City continued to gain traction. In 1950, the Wolverines went 5-6. Two years later, head coach Jim Loveless led Grove City to its first winning season with a 6-4 mark. That season began Grove City’s current run of 59 straight winning seasons. Loveless coached the team until 1954, when Russ Weider took over. In his one season as head coach, Weider led Grove City to a 9-1 record and the school’s first PennOhio championship. Philip Sedgley coached the team to an 18-2 mark and two Penn-Ohio runner-up finishes from 1955-57. Following that season, Grove City hired a coach who would make an immeasurable impact on the swimming and diving program: Jim Longnecker. In Longnecker’s first year as head coach, 1957-58, the Wolverines went 6-5. That season, the program produced the first of its 58 all-time All-Americans as Ubbo van der Valk produced the eighth-fastest time in the nation in the 100-yard breaststroke. By 1962, Grove City emerged as the region’s preeminent program as the Wolverines went 12-0 and won the Penn-Ohio meet. That season began a run of seven straight league titles for Grove City. In 1964, Grove City hosted the first-ever NCAA College Division Swimming and Diving Championships. Grove City

Unfortunately, it would be the last time Grove City participated in the national championships for some time. Following that year, the College banned its teams from participating in postseason competition. Despite a 33-9 dual-meet record and four Penn-Ohio titles over the next four years, Grove City did not compete in the national meet, preventing several standouts from earning NCAA All-America honors. Grove City returned to the NCAA Championships in 1969, finishing 36th nationally. In 1975, after a 12-1 dual-meet record, Grove City took 13th at the inaugural Division III Championships. That marked the first of five top-20 national finishes for Grove City in the 1970s. Six years later, Grove City produced its first national champion as diver Chris Van De Mark swept both the 1and 3-meter diving titles at the 1981 NCAA meet. In 1982, Van De Mark successfully defended his 1-meter title and earned runner-up in 3-meter diving after helping the team to a 12-0 dual-meet mark. The next year, Dan Young won the NCAA 1-meter diving title and in 1984, Clark Johnson captured the 3-meter diving national title. Grove City began competition in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in 1984-85 and quickly emerged as the

PROGRAM HISTORY league’s dominant program by winning eight of 11 PAC titles. The Wolverines went 10-0 in 1986-87, then assembled 40 straight victories from 1993-96. Grove City went undefeated in 1993-94, 1994-95 and 1995-96. In Longnecker’s final season, 1996-97, Grove City went 10-2. Longnecker retired after 40 seasons with 366 wins, 44 All-Americans and 15 league titles to his credit. Following the 1997 season, 1983 Grove City grad Keith Bullion took over as head coach. During Bullion’s five years as head coach, Grove City won three league titles and went 33-17 overall.

A new era began in 2002 as 1994 alum Dave Fritz replaced Bullion as head coach. In 2006, Caleb Courage became Grove City’s first men’s swimming national champion as he won the NCAA title in the 100 free. In 2007, Courage defended his national title while teammate Tim Whitbeck won the NCAA title in the 50 free. Grove City returned to the top of the conference in 2008 as the Wolverines won their first PAC title since 2004. In 2009, Grove City repeated as conference champion and finished with a 12-2 dual-meet record. Eleven Wolverine swimmers earned NCAA All-America honors in helping Grove City finish sixth at the NCAA meet. Courage earned his third national title and set a new national mark in the 100 free with a time of 43.60. Grove City won its third straight league title in 2010 and finished with an 11-2 overall record. The Wolverines then won their fourth consecutive conference title in 2011 and finished with a 10-4 dual-meet mark. Grove City extended its conference title streak to five in 2012 as the Wolverines successfully defended their crown.

PROGRAM HISTORY Caleb Courage won three national titles in the 100 freestyle and earned 18 career All-America honors. He later qualified for the United States Olympic Trials.

Diver Chris Van De Mark won two national titles in 1981 and won the 1-meter NCAA title in 1982.

ABOUT

THE

PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

ABOUT THE PAC Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high-pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. During the 2005-06 academic year, Chatham, Geneva and Saint Vincent all joined the PAC. Chatham competed for PAC championships for the first time during the 2007-08 academic year. Saint Vincent first competed for conference titles in 201011. Geneva became eligible for conference titles in 2011-12. In 2014, Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University will compete for the conference’s championship in football as affiliate members. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. AllConference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in individual sports such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s AllSports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in conference competition. W&J won the Men’s All-Sports Trophy in 2011-12 and Westminster won the Women’s All-Sports Trophy. In 2011-12, the league named 734 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

ABOUT GROVE CITY COLLEGE

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

The beautifully landscaped campus of Grove City College stretches over 150 acres and includes 28 neoGothic buildings. It is considered one of the loveliest in the nation. While the College has changed to meet the needs of the society it serves, its basic philosophy has remained unchanged since its founding in 1876. It is a Christian, liberal arts institution, dedicated to the principle of providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost. Wishing to remain truly independent and to retain its distinctive qualities as a private school governed by private citizens (trustees), it is one of few colleges in the country that does not accept federal funds. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but not narrowly denominational, the College believes that to be well-educated a student should be exposed to the central ideas of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Grove City College offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, business, and music and is distinguished as a national leader in education. Grove City’s programs in electrical and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission Board of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The “big business school curriculum” prepares students for today’s global business reality. An extensive variety of internship opportunities are provided across the curriculum. Grove City College wants its students to be prepared in this age of mobile information technology. Each entering freshman receives a tablet computer which is his or hers to keep upon graduation with a four-year degree. This is part of the Information Technology Initiative, a total program integrating technology across the curriculum.

PROGRAMS AND MAJORS

Grove City College’s Breen Student Union

The College believes that its student body has a unique mix of talents and abilities. Its Career Services program helps students identify those key assets during the first year and then builds a four-year strategy to help them pursue a satisfying career. Personal counseling, professional speakers, databases, alumni contacts, summer internships, corporate visits, employer presentations and more are incorporated into the career preparation experience. Grove City follows the semester calendar plan, in addition to offering two-week sessions in January and May. Most of the 2,500 students live in separate men’s and women’s dormitories. The rest are local commuters or married students. A full program of cultural, professional, athletic and social activities is offered, including 19 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams. Grove City, a town of 8,100 people, is located 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. It is located near Interstates 79 and 80 and has a municipal airport.

Grove City College 2013-2014 Tuition $7,440 per semester Room and Board $4,054 per semester

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

All 19 of Grove City College’s intercollegiate varsity athletic teams utilize the College’s superior facilities for competition, practices and off-season training and conditioning. Grove City’s athletic facilities have undergone numerous renovations and improvements in recent years, with more upgrades scheduled in the immediate future. On lower campus, Robert E. Thorn Field is home to the College’s football and track and field teams. The College installed CSTurf at Robert E. Thorn Field. CSTurf is a synthetic playing surface that features polyethylene LSR grass fibers and a rubber infill system. The College also installed lights and resurfaced the 8-lane track around the field. Grove City also reconfigured its setup for track meets during these renovations. In 2011, the College installed a new state-ofthe-art scoreboard and new bleachers on the visitors’ side at Thorn Field. These upgrades benefit the entire campus community as the complex is used by both the College’s club sports teams and its intramural program, along with the varsity teams. The track is also available for use by recreational walkers and joggers. The complex also features 10 all-weather tennis courts next to the stadium. Phillips Field House, located at the north end of the complex, features several locker rooms, an athletic training room, meeting rooms and coaches’ offices. It is used by the football, track and tennis programs throughout the academic year. The Physical Learning Center (PLC) houses the Grove City College Arena, home to the College’s basketball and volleyball programs. In summer 2012, the College renovated the Arena by installing new lighting and a new playing floor. In recent years, the Arena has also received new scoreboards and scorers’ tables.

The home of Grove City’s football and track and field teams, Robert E. Thorn Field has received numerous renovations in recent years.

The James E. Longnecker Pool is one of the nation’s premier small-college venues for both swimming and diving and water polo.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

In addition, the PLC features the James E. Longnecker Pool, one of the premier aquatic facilities in the region. Each year, Grove City hosts the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the state-of-the-art facility. In 2012, the College also hosted the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships at the James E. Longnecker Pool. The PLC also features a second pool, the Recreational Pool, which is used by members of the College community year-round. A fitness room featuring aerobic and Cybex equipment and a separate weight room with free and mechanized weights are also keystone areas of the facility. The PLC also features six racquetball/handball courts as well as two adjacent intramural rooms. The intramural rooms feature four basketball courts, four indoor tennis courts, four volleyball courts, an indoor track and two indoor jumping pits. The College installed new synthetic flooring and several new electronic scoreboards throughout the intramural rooms. The Physical Learning Center houses the athletic training room, locker rooms and offices for coaches and physical education faculty. The College recently constructed a new office suite for coaches and athletic administration, while also incorporating its Athletic Hall of Fame area. Grove City’s outdoor athletic facilities have also received numerous upgrades in recent years. The varsity soccer field, College Field, was expanded and re-sodded during the summer of 2005. College Field also received a new press box during the summer of 2007. Meanwhile, Grove City’s baseball and softball facilities recently received major facelifts as new dugouts, new fencing and electronic scoreboards were installed on both fields.
