SEASON PREVIEW
2013 PREVIEW With 15 seniors, 14 starters and 36 lettermen back in the fold, the Grove City College football team enters the 2013 season in prime position to contend for the Presidents' Athletic Conference championship. Head coach Chris Smith returns for his 30th season and he and his veteran coaching staff will look to that core for production and leadership throughout 2013. DEFENSE Grove City led the conference in total defense last year and numerous key contributors return at all three levels of the defense. Three starters return in the secondary, including both cornerbacks. On one side, senior co-captain Chris Gibbs enters his fourth season as a starter in the defensive backfield. He has played both cornerback and free safety throughout his career at Grove City and is a returning CoSIDA Academic All-American. Sophomore Slater Simek stepped into a starting role at midseason in 2012 and returns at the other cornerback position. At free safety, three-year letterman Joe Diani is back for his senior season. He moved into the starting lineup as a sophomore in 2011 and led Grove City with five interceptions last year. Sophomore cornerback David Folkmire lettered in 2012 and will challenge for time in the secondary as well this fall. Grove City also returns three of its four starting linebackers for the 2013 campaign. Senior Ryan Althausen and junior Jason Skyrm return on the outside while senior cocaptain Ben Manwaring is back at inside linebacker.
Senior Joe Diani returns for his third season as Grove City’s starting free safety. He led the Wolverines with five interceptions in 2012.
Althausen has been one of Grove City's top pass rushers during his first three seasons and led the Wolverines with four sacks in 2012. Skyrm recorded 62 tackles last year in his first season as a full-time starter. Manwaring became a regular starter in 2012 and will help anchor the interior of the defense. Grove City also welcomes back five lettermen who will all challenge for starting spots this year. Seniors Ethan Albinger and Brandon Miller return at outside linebacker and have played extensively on defense and special teams throughout their careers. At inside linebacker, junior Brian Wells, sophomore Brandon Berringer and Bobby Tuttle will all battle for time. Tuttle led Grove City's rookies with 42 tackles in 2012. Wells has been a part-time starter during his career and Berringer lettered on special teams as a freshman. Up front, junior Jake Johnston returns at nose tackle after starting all 10 games in 2012. Johnston will be one of the veterans on a relatively young defensive front this fall. Sophomore Ryan Hickey played extensively as a rookie and has an inside track to start at defensive tackle this year. Junior Robert Rollick is a two-year letterman as a reserve defensive lineman and will challenge for a starting spot. Juniors Nate Ealy, Reese Swatsworth and Levi Weaver will also compete for time up front this season.
Junior Jason Skyrm returns for his second season as Grove City’s starting strongside linebacker. He recorded 62 tackles in 2012.

2013 PREVIEW
SEASON PREVIEW
OFFENSE Grove City returns several key contributors to an offensive attack that has consistently been one of the region's most balanced in recent years. At quarterback, senior Brian Pell enters 2013 as a threeyear starter for the Wolverines. Pell ranks second all-time at Grove City in passing yardage and touchdown passes. He accounted for 17 total touchdowns last year and is also Grove City's leading returning rusher, having accumulated 384 yards last year. Grove City also returns its leading pass-catcher from 2012 in senior wide receiver Anthony Ritchie. The 6-foot-5 Ritchie caught 43 passes last season, including eight touchdowns. Senior Khalil Ervin led the Wolverines in yards per reception and will battle for a full-time starting spot. Classmate Mitch Narbe moved into the starting lineup in 2012 and will look to have an increased role in the passing game this fall. At tight end, seniors Pat Donoughe and Josh Latini both return after splitting time in 2012. Each player has been a part-time starter and both men will likely see extensive time again this year. Grove City also features a number of veterans on the offensive line, including three starters. Junior Ron Dornin returns at center while classmate Zach Kepple is the incumbent left guard. Senior Ethan Martin returns as Grove City's starting right tackle. Several other lettermen will battle for starting spots this fall. Senior Ben Jubell has played extensively at center in each of the last two seasons and will compete with Dornin for the starting job. Sophomore Alex Jewell is expected to contend for time at guard while junior Jason Glacken has an inside track to start at tackle. Grove City will have to replace standout tailback Shane Kaclik, who graduated after leading the conference with 1,098 rushing yards in 2012. Sophomore lettermen Steve Maskrey and Gabriel Moore are among the candidates to fill that vacancy. At wingback, junior Sam Ivan and sophomore Zach Rader are back after both playing extensively in 2012. Both men will be used in a variety of offensive roles this year. Senior Mitch White and sophomore Jason Dillon will look to be used as blocking backs. Both players have extensive experience in that position. SPECIAL TEAMS Grove City returns several key contributors in the kicking game for the 2013 season. Diani enters his third full season as the regular punter while Donoughe may again handle kickoffs. He is also in contention to handle extra points and field goals. Pell is the incumbent holder. Dornin returns as the short snapper while sophomore Nick Piett is back as the punt snapper.
Junior wingback Sam Ivan returns for his third season in the Grove City backfield. He has emerged as an integral weapon in both the ground game and the passing attack.
Moore returned 13 kickoffs last year and could see time as a returner again. Ritchie has fielded 14 punts over the last two years. SCHEDULE Grove City begins its 119th season of play September 7 by hosting longtime rival Carnegie Mellon. After a nonconference game at Anderson (Ind.) the next Saturday, Grove City opens conference play September 21 against visiting Washington & Jefferson. That game will be the annual night game at Robert E. Thorn Field. The Wolverines visit conference foe Bethany before hosting Westminster and Waynesburg in consecutive home conference games. Westminster will be Grove City’s 2013 Homecoming opponent. Following the bye week, Grove City will face Thomas More and Geneva in back-to-back road games. The Wolverines conclude the home schedule November 9 against conference foe Saint Vincent. Grove City closes the regular season November 16 by visiting Thiel in the 30th annual Mercer County Cup game.

HEAD COACH CHRIS SMITH In 1995, Smith earned the Tri-State Officials Association’s Coach of the Year award. Overall, Smith has coached seven players who have attained All-American status as well as countless others who have earned ECAC and PAC recognition through the years. The Wolverines’ on-field success has been matched by success in the classroom. Over the past two decades, numerous Grove City players have received recognition both regionally and nationally for their academic performances. Grove City’s four CoSIDA Academic All-District selections in 2005 set a new program record. Grove City again matched that standard in 2006. In 2008, linebacker Adam Eichler and guard Dave Salera both earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors following the season. Eichler, Salera and wide receiver Stephen Mercer all earned Academic All-District recognition in 2008. Defensive back Chris Gibbs became the first Grove City junior to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American following the 2012 season. Gibbs, Joe Diani, Sam Ivan and Anthony Ritchie all earned CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition last year, tying the single-season program record with four All-District selections. A highly-respected member of the coaching community, Smith is actively involved on the American Football Coaches Association Division III Football Council. He is also a past member of the NCAA Division III Football Committee, which supervises the NCAA Division III playoffs. Smith ascended to the head coaching position at Grove City in 1984 after spending five years as an assistant at the College. Prior to joining the Grove City football staff in 1979, Smith coached the outside linebackers at Western Kentucky University. Smith’s coaching career began at Perry High School in his hometown of Massillon, Ohio. From 1996 to 2003, Smith also held the role of Director of Athletics at Grove City. Grove City teams won 59 total Presidents’ Athletic Conference titles during that span, including titles in 17 different sports. As a player, Smith started at safety for the Wolverines from 1968-71. He led the team in interceptions three times and holds Grove City’s career record for interceptions with 22. Over his 38 years as a player, assistant coach and head coach at Grove City, Smith has been involved in 360 games. Smith graduated from Grove City in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He then completed his master’s degree at Western Kentucky. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Grove City. Their daughter Ellie is a 2003 Grove City College graduate.

HEAD COACH CHRIS SMITH
Chris Smith is in his 30th season as Grove City College’s head football coach. A 1972 Grove City College graduate, Smith is the dean of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference football coaches. He is also the all-time wins leader in the 119year history of Grove City football. In 2012, Smith guided the Wolverines to a 6-4 overall mark and a 5-3 record in the rugged Presidents’ Athletic Conference. The 2012 Wolverines led the conference in total defense and senior tailback Shane Kaclik became the third 1,000-yard rusher in program history. Grove City also led the nation in fewest penalty yards per game last season. The Wolverines ranked third nationally in that category in 2011. Overall, Grove City has been the least-penalized team in the conference six times in the last eight seasons. Numerous Grove City players have earned national and regional acclaim during his tenure. In 2005, safety Aaron Margo earned First Team All-America from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and represented the U.S. in the Aztec Bowl. In 2007, center Matt Gregg became Grove City’s third Aztec Bowl participant this decade. In 2010, tackle Pete Polesnak represented the United States in the Bowl of the Stars, the Aztec Bowl’s successor, while nose tackle Jarred Frawley participated in the 2011 Bowl of the Stars. Last season, Kaclik, linebacker Jason Ferguson and guard Josh Bermann all represented the United States in the 2012 Bowl of the Stars. Under Smith’s direction, the Wolverine program ascended into the national picture with consecutive PAC championships in 1997 and 1998. Grove City also recorded runner-up finishes in both 1999 and 2000. During that time, Smith guided an offensive juggernaut that featured record-setting fullback R.J. Bowers, who became the first college running back to eclipse the 7,000-yard mark for his career. In 1997, Smith led the Wolverines to their first-ever PAC championship and first nine-win season in program history. Grove City capped the season by hosting the United States Merchant Marine Academy in the ECAC Southwest Bowl. For his efforts that season, the American Football Coaches Association, the Metropolitan New York Writers Association and the PAC all honored Smith as their Coach of the Year.

THE PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
ABOUT THE PAC Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of highpressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. During the 2005-06 academic year, Chatham, Geneva and Saint Vincent all joined the PAC. Chatham competed for PAC championships for the first time during the 2007-08 academic year. Saint Vincent first competed for conference titles in 2010-11. Geneva became eligible for conference titles in 2011-12. In 2014, Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University will compete for the conference’s championship in football as affiliate members. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. All-Conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in individual sports such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships.
The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in conference competition. Grove City won the Women’s All-Sports Trophy for the 2012-13 academic year while Washington & Jefferson earned the Men’s All-Sports Trophy. In 2012-13, the league named a conference-record 853 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above during their semester of competition.

ABOUT GROVE CITY COLLEGE
ABOUT THE COLLEGE
The beautifully landscaped campus of Grove City College stretches over 150 acres and includes 28 neoGothic buildings. It is considered one of the loveliest in the nation. While the College has changed to meet the needs of the society it serves, its basic philosophy has remained unchanged since its founding in 1876. It is a Christian, liberal arts institution, dedicated to the principle of providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost. Wishing to remain truly independent and to retain its distinctive qualities as a private school governed by private citizens (trustees), it is one of few colleges in the country that does not accept federal funds. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but not narrowly denominational, the College believes that to be well-educated a student should be exposed to the central ideas of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Grove City College offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, business, and music and is distinguished as a national leader in education. Grove City’s programs in electrical and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission Board of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The “big business school curriculum” prepares students for today’s global business reality. An extensive variety of internship opportunities are provided across the curriculum. Grove City College wants its students to be prepared in this age of mobile information technology. Each entering freshman receives a tablet computer which is his or hers to keep upon graduation with a four-year degree. This is part of the Information Technology Initiative, a total program integrating technology across the curriculum.
PROGRAMS AND MAJORS
Grove City College’s Breen Student Union
The College believes that its student body has a unique mix of talents and abilities. Its Career Services program helps students identify those key assets during the first year and then builds a four-year strategy to help them pursue a satisfying career. Personal counseling, professional speakers, databases, alumni contacts, summer internships, corporate visits, employer presentations and more are incorporated into the career preparation experience. Grove City follows the semester calendar plan, in addition to offering two-week sessions in January and May. Most of the 2,500 students live in separate men’s and women’s dormitories. The rest are local commuters or married students. A full program of cultural, professional, athletic and social activities is offered, including 19 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams. Grove City, a town of 8,100 people, is located 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. It is located near Interstates 79 and 80 and has a municipal airport.
Grove City College 2013-2014 Tuition $7,440 per semester Room and Board $4,054 per semester

ATHLETIC FACILITIES
All 19 of Grove City College’s intercollegiate varsity athletic teams utilize the College’s superior facilities for competition, practices and off-season training and conditioning. Grove City’s athletic facilities have undergone numerous renovations and improvements in recent years, with more upgrades scheduled in the immediate future. On lower campus, Robert E. Thorn Field is home to the College’s football and track and field teams. The College installed CSTurf at Robert E. Thorn Field. CSTurf is a synthetic playing surface that features polyethylene LSR grass fibers and a rubber infill system. The College also installed lights and resurfaced the 8-lane track around the field. Grove City also reconfigured its setup for track meets during these renovations. In 2011, the College installed a new state-ofthe-art scoreboard and new bleachers on the visitors’ side at Thorn Field. These upgrades benefit the entire campus community as the complex is used by both the College’s club sports teams and its intramural program, along with the varsity teams. The track is also available for use by recreational walkers and joggers. The complex also features 10 all-weather tennis courts next to the stadium. Phillips Field House, located at the north end of the complex, features several locker rooms, an athletic training room, meeting rooms and coaches’ offices. It is used by the football, track and tennis programs throughout the academic year. The Physical Learning Center (PLC) houses the Grove City College Arena, home to the College’s basketball and volleyball programs. In summer 2012, the College renovated the Arena by installing new lighting and a new playing floor. In recent years, the Arena has also received new scoreboards and scorers’ tables.
The home of Grove City’s football and track and field teams, Robert E. Thorn Field has received numerous renovations in recent years.
The James E. Longnecker Pool is one of the nation’s premier small-college venues for both swimming and diving and water polo.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES
In addition, the PLC features the James E. Longnecker Pool, one of the premier aquatic facilities in the region. Each year, Grove City hosts the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the state-of-the-art facility. In 2012, the College also hosted the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships at the James E. Longnecker Pool. The PLC also features a second pool, the Recreational Pool, which is used by members of the College community year-round. A fitness room featuring aerobic and Cybex equipment and a separate weight room with free and mechanized weights are also keystone areas of the facility. The PLC also features six racquetball/handball courts as well as two adjacent intramural rooms. The intramural rooms each feature four basketball courts, four indoor tennis courts, four volleyball courts, an indoor track and two indoor jumping pits. The College installed new synthetic flooring and several new electronic scoreboards throughout the intramural rooms. The Physical Learning Center houses the athletic training room, locker rooms and offices for coaches and physical education faculty. The College recently constructed a new office suite for coaches and athletic administration, while also incorporating its Athletic Hall of Fame area. Grove City’s outdoor athletic facilities have also received numerous upgrades in recent years. The varsity soccer field, College Field, was expanded and re-sodded during the summer of 2005. College Field also received a new press box during the summer of 2007. Meanwhile, Grove City’s baseball and softball facilities recently received major facelifts as new dugouts, new fencing and electronic scoreboards were installed on both fields.
