Comment As with so much in the past 18 months, it’s clear to see that all kinds of situations have changed – businesses have evolved or even pivoted, and we have all adapted to new versions of ‘normal’. The same is true of trade shows, of course, with many organisers finding themselves having to change tack and adapt their plans (often more than once). Looking forward to the W Exhibition & Elements (W22), scheduled for 6-9th February 2022 at the NEC in Birmingham, the organiser Montgomery has, in my opinion, reacted to testing circumstances with considered clarity, announcing their rescheduling intentions in good time. In News this month, we hear from event managing director Nickie West and her team, who’ve been beavering away to understand more about the event’s visitors and what they are looking for. With some 30 months since the last event, I think we will see a different-looking event. A couple of the big names are opting not to exhibit this time around, preferring to invest in at-home events and other marketing exercises to maintain their brand values and customer contact. Of course, this is entirely their prerogative – however, it does rather leave the door open for other ambitious and progressive suppliers to land-grab and push for greater market share. I also feel that the event is coming at just the right time, because of the pent-up demand and desire for businesses to catch up with 500 or so brands en masse, in one space, for the first time since September 2018. Much of the industry has been enjoying a purple patch during Covid times, and the manufacturers and suppliers I have spoken to recently are in a pretty positive frame of mind, and looking to invest moving forwards. Elsewhere in this issue, a rich 14-page roster of Installation articles awaits your assessment, preceding a profile and look back at industry stalwart A L Dalton’s 120-year history as one of the trade’s most respected woodworking machinery dealers. In addition, keeping you up to date with the latest introductions, our fulsome Products pages include the likes of Häfele, T M Machinery, Titus, IDS, Ostermann, Renolit, Panelco and Essetre. Rounding things up in this most generous edition are four editorial features – CNC Machinery and Equipment, Sanding & Abrasives, Adhesives, and Dust Extraction & Woodwaste Management. I hope you enjoy this issue. John Legg, editor john@media66.net

Unprecedented visitor appetite for February’s W Exhibition Montgomery Group, the organiser of W Exhibition, the UK’s flagship event for the manufacturing and joinery industries, has revealed unprecedented levels of visitor appetite for its 6-9th February, 2022 show. When the W Exhibition opens its doors at the NEC next February, it is anticipating record levels of visitor numbers as it brings the industry back together for the first time since 2018. Visitor registration figures are tracking at more than 250% above the numbers for the same point in the campaign for 2018. Montgomery has also observed a broadening of the types of people who have registered to visit the exhibition, with over 500 registering in one week alone in September. The top job function for those who have pre-registered to visit the event include joiners, furniture
manufacturers, cabinet makers, carpenters and buyers. The broad mixture of categories spans right through to fitters, CAD designers and retailers. Furniture manufacturing (18.85%) remains the top of pre-registered visitors’ main company activity, closely followed by cabinet makers (13.63%), joiners (12.83%) and general woodworkers (12.83). Door, window, staircase and kitchen manufacturers also feature prominently amongst visitors with circa 10% citing these as primary business activities. Whilst machinery (13.19%) is a key area of interest for those who have registered to visit the show, this features comparatively to tooling (10.63%), timber boards and materials (10.08%), finishing products (9.97%), fittings and fixtures (8.75%) … all indicating that visitors are seeking a broad mixture
W Exhibition managing director, Nickie West
‘It’s far from being isolated to just the big running machinery that people want to see – there is a new and growing appetite for tooling, timber boards and materials, finishing products and fittings’
of products and not just running machinery as previous figures might have indicated. The W Exhibition typically attracts 10,000 visitors across the four days of the show. A large proportion of those who have registered to visit are budget holders, with over 20% of these holding a purchasing authority of circa £50,000. Speaking about the encouraging visitor data, W Exhibition managing director, Nickie West comments: “It’s hugely encouraging to see such strong appetite for the W Exhibition, as reflected in the high number of visitors who have pre-registered much earlier in our campaign. With no industry event since 2018, it’s time to get back together and reconnect. “I’m always eager to dig deeper into our visitor data and have been encouraged by the breadth of interest we have received from various job functions. But what I am most excited to see
within the data is the broadening breadth of the areas of interest from our pre registered visitors. It’s far from being isolated to just the big running machinery that people want to see – which has traditionally been viewed as the sole attraction, whilst still showing as a significant pull – there is a new and growing appetite for tooling, timber boards and materials, finishing products and fittings. “Historically, the W Exhibition has been dominated by a small number of large brands occupying lots of space on the show floor. However, this model has often left visitors with fewer opportunities to see new and emerging brands who arguably have just as much to offer. We’ve been working hard to address the balance between the brands that are exhibiting – alongside the brand leaders, our visitors can expect to see lots of new and exciting companies who will be making their W Exhibition debuts. “After an extended period of restricted face-to-face business we hope that the entire industry will share in our enthusiasm at getting back to doing what we do best. The W Exhibition & Elements is the UK’s flagship event for the joinery and furniture making industry and we are excited to showcase all of the latest products and machinery when we return in February 2022.” The W Exhibition has over 40 years of heritage, and continues to grow. It will return to the NEC for its biennial four-day showcase from 6-9th February 2022. The show brings together some of the world’s leading suppliers of woodworking machinery, materials and tooling. www.wexhibition.co.uk

Silentnight becomes world’s first sleep brand to join UN-backed decarbonisation project British bed brand, Silentnight, is the world’s first bed and mattress manufacturer to commit to the Science-based target initiative (SBTi), one of the planet’s leading decarbonisation initiatives, with partner organisations including the UN Global Compact, the World Resource Institute, CDP and the WWF. In working alongside SBTi, Silentnight joins some of the world’s biggest brands, including IKEA and Selfridges, to set the following three collective targets: setting a net zero long-term goal when it comes to carbon emissions; reducing emissions at a pace consistent with keeping global warming below 1.5°C; and disclosing progress towards these goals annually and transparently. All businesses participating in SBTi undertake three umbrella strategies, with further substrategies to move towards decarbonisation. These comprise mitigating fossil fuel consumption, reducing energy demand and switching to renewable energy sources – then demonstrating that their own suppliers are also making these changes, and collating clear, quality data to illustrate the impact of the supply chain’s changes. Collectively, these strategies reduce emissions both upstream and downstream from the brand,
creating an even better overall result. The bed brand is already making headway on its sustainability goals, and has reduced its carbon emissions by -49% during the last four years alone. Projects which have helped the business achieve this success including sourcing 70% of its raw materials close to its Lancashire headquarters, using 100% renewable electricity, cutting one million kilos of fuel consumption, and sending zero waste to landfill via its manufacturing site. In the past five years Silentnight has sold over 1,500,000 Eco Comfort mattresses, bringing sustainable sleep at an affordable price to the mass market. The range features recycled plastic bottles that are ground and spun into comfortable eco fibres. Silentnight reduces its consumption of virgin raw materials by using materials from 450 million recycled plastic bottles each year within its range of mattresses, pillows, duvets and mattress protectors. Angela Moran, product strategy director, says: “We’re proud to be market leaders in sustainable sleep solutions, and have put sustainability at the heart of product development for many years, ensuring that affordable
beds and mattresses that also help to care for the environment are accessible to all. “Now we’re taking these successes, which include reducing our carbon emissions by almost a half in four years, and making an even bigger commitment by becoming the world’s first sleep brand to set climate science-based targets. “We’re already making plans as to how we can work alongside our counterparts across the globe to take on our fair share of the responsibility towards ensuring a future below 1.5°C global warming, and we look forward to reporting even greater results as our work within the project progresses.” Silentnight has made other shorter-term, yet still major, commitments, to ensure its business operates sustainably while other long-term moves towards net zero carbon emissions are underway. This includes operating as a carbon-neutral business by offsetting 3600 tonnes of carbon, and investing in tree planting and renewable power projects in the UK and worldwide. The business is also a supporter of The Marine Conservation Society, which works to maintain healthy seas and reduce marine litter. www.silentnight.co.uk

New recycling plant to create more sustainable bed manufacturing Fifth-generation bed and mattress manufacturer, Harrison Spinks, is bolstering its sustainability credentials by launching a dedicated recycling plant and unveiling its first-ever annual sustainability report. Having been at the forefront of sustainable bedmaking for years – including innovations in glue-free, foam-free and FR chemical treatmentfree manufacturing, Harrison Spinks has pledged to reach net carbon zero by 2023 through its focus on ethical and sustainable circular design.
Richard Essery
The company’s recycling plant is located in Scunthorpe, and will facilitate the disassembly and recycling of all Harrison Spinks mattresses containing its patented Cortec spring systems. The recycled components can be reprocessed into new raw material for future use as part of the company’s ‘circular by design’ ethos, meaning that no Harrison Spinks mattress should end up in landfill. Other sustainable initiatives announced in the sustainability report include: the appointment of a taskforce to deliver sustainable initiatives on a monthly basis; further investment in in-house weaving looms to reduce the company’s carbon footprint; launching Harrison Spinks Renewables, with plans to invest in solar projects in the future; significant tree planting with the Northern Forest; partnering with British Wool to be the first bed manufacturer to be part of its new traceable wool initiative supporting British farmers; and going fully electric with all on-site and company vehicles. Director of sustainability and innovation,
Richard Essery, comments: “Our Beyond Circular approach sees us commit to an entirely recyclable, reusable and zero-to-landfill production, to ensure we continue to lead the way in sustainability and change the way the world sleeps. “The innovative work and initiatives of the business are contributing to saving the planet in many ways. “The continued efforts to make entirely sustainable products – from the initial stages of growing materials to the end of their long life – have been happening behind the scenes, and it’s time to share these in detail. “While we’ve set the wheels in motion, we’re not afraid to recognise that more needs to be done to become a completely sustainable business, for both the health of our customers and the benefit of the environment. We’re immensely proud to unveil our latest sustainable innovations and future plans through our sustainability report.” www.harrisonspinks.co.uk/sustainabilityreport-2021
How the timber industries can help solve the housing crisis Recognising that the UK must build more homes, quicker, while reducing carbon emissions, the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the Timber Industries has launched with a new report that aims to provide solutions to the UK’s housing and climate crises. The report, titled ‘How the timber industries can help solve the housing crisis’, calls on the Government to support the use of wood in construction through policy and procurement, as well as introducing legislation to regulate embodied carbon – starting with mandatory, standardised carbon measurement on all Government projects. Launched on 16th September at the inaugural general meeting of the APPG, the report makes a series of key recommendations devised to help the Government reach its target of building 300,000 more homes per year, while also
significantly boosting the trajectory towards net zero carbon. Crucially, the recommendations call for a new focus on whole-life carbon emissions within the Building Regulations and the introduction of thresholds for embodied carbon within construction. The report urges the Government to give preference to low-carbon materials and building solutions for all Government projects, pointing to the economic benefits that scaling up the timber and forestry industries would bring. Calls are also made in the report for a more joined-up approach to working with the timber industry, to develop an industrial strategy that can align with Government policy. Finally, the report highlights that while the Government has – quite rightly – made building safety a top priority in the wake of the Grenfell fire, the regulations around combustible materials have not always reflected the realities of
David Warburton MP
safe construction using timber. A fundamental differentiation must be made between cladding and structural elements, and the report points towards an evidence-based approach to safety regulations. David Warburton, MP for Somerton and Frome, and chair of the APPG, comments: “We are at a vital junction, where the imperative to build more homes is converging with the urgent need to reduce carbon across all of our markets. Now is the time to put forward policies that will enable us to build a more productive and low-carbon housing sector. “By levelling up the existing timber and forestry supply chain, and making greater use of modern methods of construction, we can deliver more quality homes – and
we can do this sustainably and at pace.” Over the next Parliamentary session, the APPG for the Timber Industries will undertake a programme of activity to enable the timber industries to work with Parliamentarians to raise awareness of the vital contribution that the industries make to the UK economy and UK trade. It will also focus on the importance of the timber industries achieving net zero 2050, and the opportunities which exist to support sustainable timber construction in the UK. www.cti-timber.org

Biesse’s Selco SK4 in situ at Verco
Office furniture manufacturer, Verco, mobilised its fleet of Biesse wood processing machines to manufacture 5500 Covid-safe desking stations for the UK Government within a four-month timeframe.
Verco counts on Biesse to deliver on Covid-safe desking contract When office furniture designer and manufacturer Verco secured one of its largest ever orders – a special desking project for the UK Government – it knew it could only deliver on time if it could rely on the performance of its Biesse machines. Biesse rose to the challenge, providing responsive engineering support and rapid online troubleshooting to meet Verco’s ambitious uptime targets. Fulfilling the exacting terms of the contract and delighting the customer, 5500 MFC desk positions with Covid-protective MFC/ Perspex and glass screening were delivered by the end of March. A seat in the capital Verco has a rich heritage in furniture making that stretches back more than a century, when High Wycombe was known as the chair making capital of the world. In the 1960s, the company’s focus switched to office furniture, primarily seating, and recent history has seen Verco investing in
CNC machinery from Biesse to develop its panel furniture business. Verco’s first Biesse purchases were two secondhand machines: a Protec (built in 1999) for large panel processing and a smaller Rover 380 (built in 1992). Both are still in use by Verco today – testament to the longevity and build quality of Biesse machines. Positive first impressions “These were our first introduction to Biesse, so when we subsequently looked to purchase new machines we called them in to have a chat. When compared with other brands, Biesse’s machines were more competitive from a technical and pricing perspective,” says Peter Mitchell, production director at Verco. These early models have since been joined by several other Biesse machines, including a VIET sander, Selco beam saws, Rover A Edge edgebanding CNCs and its newest purchase – a Rover
A FT flat-bed router. Housed within Verco’s 40,000 sq ft woodworking mill, this battery of furniture making equipment, in conjunction with a highly skilled and dedicated workforce, has established Verco as a leader in high quality commercial desking and table products. Colossal contract opportunity In summer 2020 Verco was approached with a view to designing and manufacturing 5,500 work stations, incorporating more than 25,000 MFC panels and 13,000 Perspex panels, to create a Covid-safe working environment. One of the largest ever contracts in Verco’s 109year history, there was a lot riding on this project. Even before the contract was awarded, Verco had to secure its supply chains, commit to materials and make the logistical arrangements to pack 1000 tonnes of desking into special desk-unit stillages and deliver them to a central distribution warehouse.
19
The scale of the order meant Verco would have to pull out all the stops to guarantee ontime delivery of the desking. This would entail operating an extended shift and moving to a six-day week for the duration of the contract, and even then, any machine downtime would jeopardise Verco’s ability to complete on time. Complex components “We were very aware of the magnitude of this project and the fact we had very little time to make all the components,” explains Peter. “This challenge was compounded by the complexity of those components. Some of them needed secondary machining in terms of sizing, edging, shaping, routing and shape-edging, which are difficult but essential to get absolutely accurate all of the time. We knew we were going to have to rely heavily on the repeatability and reliability of our machines as we simply wouldn’t have enough time to make the job with any downtime.” He continues: “Two machines that were absolutely crucial to the success of the project were the Rover A Edge machines, because we couldn’t perform shaped edge-banding with the same accuracy, repeatability and quality on any other machines, especially in the quantities required. Therefore guaranteeing uptime for these machines was paramount.” Seeking assurance With this in mind, prior to the contract being signed off, Verco sought Biesse’s assurance that it would respond swiftly in the event of any equipment issues. “We wanted to make sure that they could guarantee support on our site when we needed it and remotely when we needed it,” says Peter. With the client delighted with the prototypes that Verco designed, it was all systems go from mid-November. From then on, with only a few breaks in between for Christmas, six 45ft artics left Verco each week for the next 11 weeks.

“The benefit of an engineer identifying a problem on a machine remotely and correcting that problem remotely is speed. If issues can be sorted without a site visit that is better for everyone” All hands to the deck “Staff were seconded from all areas of the business to work on this project. Everyone engaged with the fact it needed to be done. They were all under full employment at that time which they were pleased about, and employees in the mill were working long hours – 6am to 6pm – and doing lots of overtime,” says Peter. During this period, several of the Biesse machines were working flat out, including some of the oldest ones. “Even the big old Protec had its part to play,” recalls Peter. “Some of the panels we were handling were 1800 x 2100mm, so the Protec was ideal for the precise edge saw process. We were able to do some of the shaping and some of the edging on the Rovers and then move onto
the Protec for the saw cut, which was a more efficient way of working.” Rapid resolution During this project, Biesse’s remote troubleshooting capabilities played a vital role in keeping downtime to a minimum. “The benefit of an engineer identifying a problem on a machine remotely and correcting that problem remotely is speed. If issues can be sorted without a site visit that is better for everyone,” says Peter. The latest machine purchased by Verco incorporates SOPHIA – Biesse’s IoT platform. This gives Biesse a ‘window’ into each installed machine via a continuous connection with the platform. Users can call for assistance via an app and Biesse’s engineers will diagnose and resolve issues remotely. “SOPHIA makes a big difference in so far as being able to identify where there are problems,” notes Peter. During the project, any issues that couldn’t be resolved remotely were dealt with efficiently onsite by Biesse’s engineers, according to Peter, who praised Biesse’s response as “positive” and engineer attendance as “on-time and effective”. Successful completion By the end of March, all four phases of the ambitious programme had been delivered ontime, with the product passing the Government’s stringent procedures. “The customer was extremely pleased with our performance, which was a tremendous boost for our workforce who had put their all into what was one of the largest single orders in the history of Verco. Biesse’s support was key in keeping production on track and on time and their engineers should be applauded,” says Peter. www.biesse.com

Leading potato box manufacturer, United Box, has invested in a Salvador SuperUp crosscut saw from Daltons Wadkin. Located at Airlie in the heart of the Scottish seed potato growing region, United Box has an unrivalled reputation for manufacturing a range of high-capacity wooden boxes. Formed in 2003 by the current owners Scott Group, James Jones and Sons, and the Phillips family, United Box claims to supply 80% of the Scottish potato box market. To keep pace with increasing demand from growers in the UK and Ireland, the company looked to Daltons Wadkin for expert advice on how to meet its growing production requirements. “Crosscutting was a bottleneck in production”, comments Andy Walsh, sales director at Daltons Wadkin. “We offer an unrivalled range of manual, semi-automatic and fully automatic crosscut saws from leading European manufacturers. When looking to boost productivity, reduce skill requirements and provide a safe working process, Salvador answers the call every time.” Daltons Wadkin is the sole agent for Salvador in the UK and Ireland, a partnership spanning over 10 years with installations into the hundreds. The new Salvador SuperUp has replaced the company’s original saw, and boasts a wealth of features. “The working principle of the machine remains the same, with safe, two-handed operator control,” says Andy, “but the overall design is stronger, with improved accessibility

for maintenance and blade changing.” The added strength of the machine enables sawing capacities to be increased with blades sizes of 500/550 and 600mm available. Pneumatic controls for regulation of the saw stroke are now conveniently located above the machine bed, making adjustment for varying material types/thicknesses simple.
Infeed and outfeed tables can be specified in any length, with a choice of manual and pneumatically operated flip-down stops. The company’s previous saw featured a fixed front saw guard that encumbered machine loading and unloading in tight workspaces. The new SuperUp model now offers an optional automatic retracting front protection
“What we save on paying for skips has paid for the heater!” A West Midlands kitchen manufacturer has purchased a new woodwaste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on waste disposal and heating. Wudyu, based in Coventry, designs and installs the highest quality kitchens from leading manufacturers. Alan Winfield, director at Wudyu, realised that by investing in a woodwaste heater, he could burn all the wood offcuts generated from kitchen manufacture instead of having to hire skips each week. Plus, the business would no longer need to run the oil heater to keep the factory warm in winter. Alan says: “Once we looked at the numbers, we realised it just made sense. What we’d save on paying for skips would pay for the heater, so we contacted Wood Waste Technology.” After reviewing costs and performance, the business purchased a WT15 that was installed into the middle unit of Wudyu’s three manufacturing units so air could be channelled into the other two units either side. Alan says: “There are so many benefits to having a woodwaste heater, that I can’t understand why all woodwaste-generating businesses don’t have one, as the money saved on heating and waste disposal pays for the
heater! And the team at Wood Waste Technology is fantastic, they’re always so helpful and their woodwaste burners are fantastic!” Wood Waste Technology’s Kurt Cockroft says: “Whatever the primary reason for purchase – heat or waste disposal, a woodwaste heater is a cost-effective and productive solution for companies that generate waste wood, and some companies get payback on the investment in less than 12 months.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in woodwaste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of woodwaste heaters, and supplies genuine spares up to -60% cheaper than other suppliers. Wood Waste Technology is also the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk

New CNC machine upgrades capacity and capability for Welsh joinery firm Operating in a marketplace that was diversifying away from its core high-quality joinery work, Wrexham-based Bryn Roberts Joinery has successfully developed another line of business. Recent investment by Bryn Roberts Joinery in new CNC machinery has seen the business take steps forward in terms of the breadth of its design and manufacturing capability, the repeatable accuracy of its work as well as the volume of output. Works foreman Owen Roberts (no relation) explains: “Initially, the business was focused on high-end joinery, with the odd 5% of the business being other specialist work for all sorts of markets. Today, that has entirely flipped and we make sensory toys and that is our core market, and now the Bryn Roberts Joinery business is majority-owned by TFH.” TFH is one of the most successful companies
in this space, and its partners distribute hundreds of products – such as bubble tubes, fibre optic lighting, safe storage cabinets, projectors, interactive wall panels, mirrors and more – to over 100 countries worldwide. Owen says that the company currently produces around 50-60 different products in batches throughout the year delivering to the TFH UK headquarters in Stourport, Worcestershire, before being shipped out around the world via TFH offices in the US, Canada, and Sweden. In terms of machinery and equipment, Owen, who has worked for Bryn Roberts for almost 20 years, says that looking back, Bryn Roberts Joinery was typical of a traditional joinery firm with a range of modest machinery and classical equipment with skilled, bench-trained craftsmen. However in recent years, the company also
acquired a limited CNC capability, but it was a machine with only 900mm on the Y axis, meaning sheets had to be trimmed before being used on the CNC, wasting time. The limitations of this machine quickly became clear as the guys were having to work around the machine pre-trimming sheets and not really getting all the benefits you would want from a CNC – so it was only used maybe an hour or so each day. Clearly the company needed a more capable machine to create more efficiency, so Owen approached Carl O’Meara, the MD of Burscough, Lancashire wood working machinery expert, J & C O’Meara, to explore some CNC options. Following an initial meeting, Carl carried out a full assessment on the company’s existing capability and compared that with a new CNC option he believed would be right for the business.

As one might expect, on all like-for-like areas, the AES Extreme 1632 CNC nesting machine that Carl proposed would provide considerable gains across the board, the headline being that it would be three times quicker to machine parts. It gets interesting of course when one extrapolates that to a 40-hour working week using the AES Extreme – the existing CNC would take around 120 hours. More significant was the difference that a combination of the faster, more efficient AES Extreme along with operator training and introducing optimised machining strategies would make. And then it is also the hidden costs that need to be appreciated, including having a machine operator present to cover those additional 80 hours (at £15/hour x 80 = £1200) plus the additional cost of 80 hours power to run the old CNC, dust extraction and compressor to allow it to produce the same number of parts as the AES machine – the opportunity becomes ever-more compelling. Asking Owen what he feels the new CNC will mean for the Bryn Roberts business, he says: “The new AES Extreme is enabling us to drive higher volumes through, it also means our batch quantities can go up because our sheet size is bigger, and with the excellent nesting facility, our yield quantities are considerably better too. “Notably, because of the Extreme’s efficiency and ease-of operation, where previously we were considering an extra person to keep up
Bryn Roberts Joinery also opted for AES’ recently introduced extraction option
with demand, which in these changeable and challenging times is a decision we’re glad we’ve been able to delay for now.” Owen also praised the pre-sale efforts by Carl and his team, the installation and training being very good indeed: “We’ve had the new Extreme for six or seven months now, and along with the AES extraction system we bought at the same time, we’re delighted with how much The AES Extreme nesting CNC is easy and intuitive to operate
more performance and capability we have – it feels entirely natural now and we’re making gains across the business because of it. I would absolutely recommend this set-up to businesses in a similar situation, and I would also put a shout out for Carl and team at J & C O’Meara for their insight and professionalism.” 01704 893109 www.ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk

Microvellum software fuels vision for Shopfit UK’s growth
A specialist in the manufacture of bespoke cabinetry, worktops, furniture, and retail shopfitting products, Shopfit UK has been a family-run business for over 20 years. The company, based in Hull, specialises in providing personalised solutions for its clients spanning the residential and commercial sectors of the woodworking industry. For two decades, its work has been consistent and similar in scope, but recently it has recognised the need to diversify and expand into new markets to effectively grow the business. Last year, owner John Fallowfield and his team agreed that to achieve their goals, they needed to overhaul their processes and upgrade their technology. Their upgrade included an additional CNC machine and software from Microvellum, an AutoCAD-based platform for design, drafting,
project costing, engineering, and manufacturing. According to John, the software is well suited for manufacturers that need to build beyond simple cabinetry. “The CAM solution we have used for years has worked for our basic needs, but it does not provide us with the automation nor the capabilities that we need to support our future growth plans,” comments John. “We needed software that could help us modernise our workflows and simplify the design and engineering processes for the complex products typically found outside our current markets.” Shopfit UK is currently laying the groundwork for its expansion into laboratory, healthcare, and office interiors markets. Part of this expansion includes the development of new parametric products designed within Microvellum that will
enable the team to quickly configure products that meet simple to complex project design specifications. The CAD/CAM solution from Microvellum also includes tools for 3D modelling and one-off product creation that will enable Shopfit UK to engineer and manufacture other intricate products such as reception areas, storage systems, and other bespoke joinery. Shopfit UK also offers a variety of services including CNC machining, a full spray and polish service, as well as other aspects of bespoke joinery. Its recent machinery purchase, a Morbidelli cx220 from SCM, was added to complement Microvellum, and includes a Lamello cutter and Blum head. John goes on to describe the transformation: “We have the power to design and engineer what
27
we want. And when it comes to manufacturing our products, CNC programs can be generated for every part within any project automatically, right from our Microvellum software. Not only that, but the system is also set up to intelligently direct CNC programs for specific parts to any machine on our production floor.” In addition to the Morbidelli cx220, John’s factory is also equipped with an SCM Record 121 and Record 125 nesting machine, and a Biesse Sector 470 beam saw. “This investment, combined with the support from Microvellum’s UK-based team, has equipped us with the tools and confidence to
tackle any project, in any market, no matter the complexity,” concludes John. Shopfit UK is one of two businesses owned by John Fallowfield. The second, MIPOD, is a market leader in producing commercial glamping pods and shepherds’ huts for holiday and caravan parks throughout the UK. According to John, plans for extending the Microvellum solution into this business are already underway – having set a long-term goal of bringing the entire glamping pod construction, including the framing, interior components and cabinetry, into Microvellum as CNC-ready, parametric products. www.shopfituk.com

It has been two decades since Combilift supplied its first order to the UK’s largest independent timber distributor. An impressive 165 trucks later, and the relationship remains strong and progressive …
James Latham and Combilift – 20 years of partnership For those in the timber sector, James Latham hardly needs any introduction. With a history stretching back over 260 years, the company is now one of the UK’s largest independent distributors of timber, panels, and decorative surfaces. Operating from 12 branches throughout the UK and Ireland, Lathams supplies its products to a broad range of customers, from contractors and merchants to construction professionals and designers. The company has also been the recipient of many major TTJ Awards over the years. When it comes to materials handling and warehousing – a crucial aspect of any business to get right – it is now 20 years since Lathams ordered its first three C4000 multidirectional forklifts from Combilift in June 2001 for its Hemel Hempstead site, starting a partnership that continues to this day. The Irish specialist manufacturer was at the time just a few years old and still a relatively small company – albeit one with big ambitions – and it has since enjoyed unparalleled growth in the global materials handling sector. 70 Combilifts in operation Two decades on, around 70 C4000 models are in operation across all Latham branches, and, according to Combilift’s Tommy Cadden, who has been closely involved with the company from the outset, over 165 trucks have been supplied in all, which have a typical lifespan of seven years before being replaced by new
models. “When we first started working with James Latham, they were considering two electric four-way reach trucks for indoor operation, and two counterbalance trucks for outside use only at Hemel,” he says. Until the launch of the Combilift, this combination was then quite a standard one, but as company director Piers F Latham explains: “We had nearly decided to go with this option, but were ideally looking for a new way of working, and one that would maximise the footprint in our depots. After seeing the Combilift at a show at the NEC, the rest was history. The combination of Combilifts and racking enabled us to be the first to go to an impressive height of 8m in narrow aisles, and of course the indoor/ outdoor ability meant we needed fewer trucks whilst achieving optimum operational versatility.” Innovators in their sectors Combilift is acknowledged for its innovative design philosophy, and Lathams continues to be an innovator in its sector too, which has led to an expansion of many of the company’s depots, and consequently the ongoing need for space-saving materials handling. Piers says: “We consistently push the boundaries of materials selection, from our origins in timber products, panels and doors, to today, where we are one of the most recognised suppliers of cutting-edge materials technologies, including decorative laminates, veneers, thermoplastics and acrylics.” The Yate branch is an example of how the
James Latham director, Piers F Latham
Latham Group is addressing growth and progress. It is one of a number of new facilities designed with 9m-high racking to make the most of every inch of possible space, following on from sites in Motherwell and Leeds. With a footprint of 53,000ft², it has a current storage capacity of 7000m³ for its stock, which comprises 70% sheet and panel products and 30% hardwoods. A 10,000ft² extension is planned for later this year on-site, to cope with expanding volumes.
“Combilift worked on our suggestions regarding various issues such as the position of the exhaust, the hydraulics, the cab size and also incorporating cameras. Not all manufacturers are willing to pursue such open and frank dialogue, but this resulted in trucks that were 100% fit for purpose, and was a major reason for adopting Combilift’s multi-directional concept across the board” Piers Latham, James Latham

“I believe that our customised products, the design of which has also been influenced by input from Latham employees and depot directors, together with the level of after-sales service that we offer, have enabled Combilift to continue to be the company’s preferred provider of handling equipment” Tommy Cadden, Combilift
Hard-working trucks The 10 Combilifts on-site are on the go constantly on a 24/5 shift pattern, offloading incoming deliveries, putting products into racking and reloading for despatch to customers. Their 4t base capacity, with lifting capability of 2t to 9.4m, enables them to handle diverse loads, which can be up to 4.5m long. They work in real guided aisles of 2520mm (for easy entrance, exit and quick travel within aisles and reduced risk of product damage) as well as in some free-roaming aisles set aside for the storage of 3 x 2m jumbo boards. For easier and
stable handling of these larger loads, four trucks have been fitted with telescopic forks, which measure 2050mm when extended. These can lift 1900kg at 1035 load centre to 7.8m. Other specifications requested by operations manager Reg Court and depot director Andrew Jones and their team were blue warning lights to alert pedestrians of an approaching truck, and a mast-mounted camera with an in-cab screen to ensure safer handling for drivers when placing and picking loads from the higher bays. Embracing electric power Yate is also the first branch to introduce electric Combilifts into its fleet – previous trucks at Lathams have been LPG powered – and four of its current fleet are electric. According to Piers Latham, all the company’s replacement models will be electric wherever possible, which is in line with the general move in many countries towards greener operation. Due to an upsurge in demand, over 50% of Combilift products that leave the production lines in Monaghan are now electric. For applications with high utilisation, Combilift also offers the option of supplying these trucks with GNB/Exide Tensor fast-opportunity profile batteries and chargers, and this was included in the specification for Latham’s machines. Andrew Jones says: “There are numerous advantages to the electric trucks, a major one of which is the quiet operation. This is appreciated by our neighbours, particularly when we are working during so-called unsociable hours (many Latham depots work 24-hour shifts to maximise delivery capacity). There is enough juice left in
the batteries after the night shift for the rest of the following morning before we need to charge again. “Any doubts we may have initially had about performance compared to LPG power have also been totally dispelled, and we look forward to delivery of the three new electric models we have on order.” Drivers are equally happy with the electric models, according to materials handling manager John Bennett: “There is now a bit more space in the cab, and when you are working in hot weather, conditions are much cooler and more comfortable as there is no heat emanating from the engine.” Ongoing collaboration and customer care Tommy Cadden says: “I believe that our customised products, the design of which has also been influenced by input from Latham employees and depot directors, together with the level of after-sales service that we offer, have enabled Combilift to continue to be the company’s preferred provider of handling equipment. This extends to recent new company acquisitions in Rochdale and Dublin, where a Combi-WR4 stacker truck and other multi-directional forklifts are now in operation.” Customer feedback has always played an important role in Combilift’s product development, and this was the case when the first trucks were planned for Hemel. Piers states: “This site was, in essence, a guinea pig, and Combilift worked on our suggestions regarding various issues such as the position of the exhaust, the hydraulics, the cab size and also incorporating cameras. Not all manufacturers are willing to pursue such open and frank dialogue, but this resulted in trucks that were 100% fit for purpose, and was a major reason for adopting Combilift’s multi-directional concept across the board. The people at Combilift are great to work with, as their ultimate aim is to find solutions for our requirements. This has been key to the long and ongoing partnership.” www.combilift.com www.lathamtimber.co.uk

High-end residential woodshop Alexis Cabinet Works increases volume and shopfloor efficiency with Cabinet Vision’s job-management tools Woodworking began as just another summer job for Vance Sadler, whose first stint in a woodshop turned quickly into a passion and ultimately a career path. Today, Vance is owner of Alexis Cabinet Works, a custom high-end residential shop based in Iron Station, North Carolina, that prides itself on delivering topnotch quality and customer service. “We’re building the kind of quality products that you can’t get without going completely custom,” says Vance, who attracts new clients primarily by word-of-mouth. “In giving our customers what they want, a high level of service is very important to us.” To take his business to the next level in overall efficiency and production capacity, Vance needed software that could generate realistic shop drawings, as well as material and cut lists. After investigating his options, he purchased the Cabinet Vision design-to-manufacturing solution in the summer of 2017. “I was going through and hand-figuring all of my boxes and all of my cut lists,” he says. “Every single drawing was done by hand. I started looking at what my hourly rate was versus using software, and the difference was very significant. Just in labour, I’ve paid for the software twice — and I’ve had it for less than six months.” Since implementing Cabinet Vision, Vance has hired a new full-time employee, which brings his crew up to three – including his wife, Sheila, who works in the shop part time. Though small, his team is able to take on more work while maintaining high product quality, making fewer
errors, and dealing with shorter lead times. A former employee of Vance’s returned to the job after the implementation of Cabinet Vision, and was almost instantly further along in his ability to understand the flow and logistics of production than he was when he had left. “I hand him drawings, and everything he needs is on the cut list and the assembly sheet, so having the software has really helped him to understand how things work,” Vance says. “I can just hand the drawings and the sheets
to my employees and they’re able to go from there, without more help from me. I’m extremely pleased with the software – I have no regrets or buyer’s remorse. It’s helping my business go to the next level.” Jobs at Alexis begin when Vance visits the homes of customers to look at the spaces in which his projects will be built. He also encourages customers to submit images of finished spaces that they find aesthetically pleasing, which gives him an idea of their style preferences. “With Cabinet Vision, I can put a design in front on my customer and they can see any changes that they want to make, and see the full layout of the project,” Vance says. “I’m very heavily involved with the customers, and even the contractors I work with turn customers over to me. One of my favourite things is sitting down with them, seeing what they really want and showing them how everything will look when it’s done.” In addition to ironing out project details for customers, Cabinet Vision is helpful in delivering a ‘wow factor’ for customers who may not be able to accurately visualise the end result. It is also a handy tool for helping customers to spot project details that do not fulfill their vision. “I can take Cabinet Vision and make them see when something is a terrible idea, without having to say it. I think sometimes that how people envision things to be built versus how they are actually built doesn’t match up,” he says. “I’ve actually sold jobs by using Cabinet Vision to help customers see what they are asking for and
33
what really works best.” He also uses the software to take customers on virtual tours of finished projects. “I can open doors, open drawers, have people tell me that they have one pot or plant that they want sitting here or there. It lets the customer be very detailed with what they want to see,” he says. “I do sit down with my customers with Cabinet Vision open and go through a virtual walkthrough of the project before we ever start construction, and with a lot of customers there is pleasant shock and awe.” While Vance has yet to implement CNC machinery, he utilises all of the job-planning
tools within Cabinet Vision to streamline workflow, increase efficiency and reduce error. He and his team use the system’s ability to generate material lists, door lists, face-frame lists, cut lists and assembly sheets on a daily basis. Though he still invests a significant amount of time in layout and design, Vance is eliminating shopfloor errors, and the team is able to handle an increasing volume of work. “Even with a learning curve from running the software, the mistakes I made were easy to correct,” he says. “I would not have been able to add a second employee as quickly as I had if I
wasn’t able to hand them jobs with very minimal instructions.” Vance also appreciates the help he gets from the Cabinet Vision team, which provided support throughout the implementation process, and is “always willing to answer my questions”. “As we grow, I will grow with Cabinet Vision, and that is one thing I can guarantee,” Vance says. “As we grow as a shop and continue to implement more machinery, I’ll keep learning and growing with the software as it continues to evolve.” www.cabinetvision.com

edge banders. The five machines that were installed at the new Kidderminster site consist of Homag’s Centateq P-110, Edgeteq S-500, Sawteq B-300 and the Joos press and glue spreader. Homag – a longstanding trusted partner Duncan Reeds’ company directors visited Homag’s headquarters in Germany to see the new machines in operation before purchasing them. During their visit, the Homag sales team helped the directors to select the most
appropriate machinery for their specific requirements and budget. Remarking on the Homag machinery investment, Dean concludes: “We consider Homag a trusted partner having invested in over 20 of its machines over the past 30 years. So the decision to use them again was an obvious choice. “We selected Homag as our preferred machinery supplier for the new factory as quality and service are essential to our success. These are the two most important
attributes we look for in our machinery suppliers, and our long-standing experience with Homag has clearly demonstrated its ability to deliver these qualities. “During our visit to Homag’s head office, we decided to invest in some of their most advanced technology to facilitate our ambitious expansion plans.” For a demonstration or more information on Homag’s machinery or software, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. www.homag.com

Founded in 1901, Daltons Wadkin is the UK’s longest-established distributor and manufacturer of industrial woodworking machinery for processing a wide range of materials including solid wood and wood-based panels, composites, plastics, non-ferrous metals and more. Operating from purpose-built premises on the edge of Nottingham, with extensive showroom facilities demonstrating how the equipment works, Daltons sells the latest CNC routers, automatic crosscut saws, vertical panel saws, edgebanders, sliding table panel saws and planer moulders. It is a humbling story, and perhaps there is not anyone that has seen as much as Steve Balchin, the company’s technical director. Steve joined Daltons Wadkin in 1984 as an engineer, and is currently the company’s longest-serving employee. Over that time, Steve has had quite a career, working on contracts from some of the world’s biggest car manufacturers, and even the James Bond and Harry Potter franchises. He says: “I’m quite lucky for some of the opportunities that I’ve had, and I’m very proud. “Daltons Wadkin supplied the kit for the Harry Potter and James Bond films, and I went and installed all the workshop equipment for the scenery sets. “The first James Bond film we worked on was Moonraker, and with the Harry Potter films we did all the work for them at Leavesden Studios.” Steve adds: “It’s quite surreal to think when you watch the films that all the machinery that’s used to make the sets was set up and installed by us. It’s quite fascinating.” One of Steve’s proudest moments working for the firm, however, was being asked to contribute to a charity documentary film in Sierra Leone for Channel 4. “I was out there with Nick Hewer, who is the

ambassador of Street Child, a charity to help kids who have lost their parents to things like AIDS, and helping people set up little industrial businesses. “I went out there with Nick and the film crew, and we set up a workshop there, and this documentary was filmed and shown on Channel 4.” Steve’s role with Daltons Wadkin has taken him all over the world, and he admits that since starting in 1984, no two days have been the same. “I’ve been to some of the most inhospitable places in the world to work. I’ve been to India, Africa, Sierra Leone, and the Falkland Islands. “Twenty or 30 years ago, I don’t think the Daltons brothers ever would have dreamed they would be sending engineers all around the world to work on contracts. One minute you’re in a prison, and the next you could be standing in one of the world’s oldest distilleries.” Steve adds: “To be honest, no day with Daltons Wadkin is ever the same.” Having had a great relationship with previous owners Nigel and Francis Dalton, Steve was very keen to strike a similar one with Nigel’s son, Alex, who now leads the business. “I used to work quite closely with Nigel. You really could have a lot of banter with him, he enjoyed it – whereas Francis was a lot more serious. He’d be giving me a lecture on not even attempting to wind him up, or what have you! “Since Alex has taken over, he has the same approach to life as his dad did, and you can have a lot of banter and a lot of fun with Alex.” With Daltons Wadkin celebrating 120 years in business, Steve believes the secret to success for the family-run business lies with its passion for always wanting to improve and keeping the customer in mind. “I would say, they’re always prepared to try new avenues to boost the business”, he adds. “For example, originally, they used to do generator sets and, just after the war, diversified into woodworking machinery.

“They’ve also expanded the portfolio of machines that we sell greatly, so they’re not in a little bubble where they only sell two or three types. “We now have one of the largest service departments of any distributor, a dedicated operator training department, along with spare parts and tooling.” The landscape of the woodworking industry has changed dramatically over the years, with machines becoming more technologically advanced. Steve makes it clear that in order to stay relevant in the industry it was important for Daltons Wadkin to be open to new ideas and have an ability to adapt. “The CNC side of machinery is always developing, along with new and safer systems. “The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) introduced a new set of regulations in 1998 that meant all the manufacturers of the machines had to develop the machines and to progress them forward to keep up with the current regulations. That’s how it’s developed – it’s far
more technically advanced than it ever was.” In addition to the advancement of the technology of the machines, Steve argues the change in design and appearance of the new machines has been just as dramatic. “The paintwork on all machines are done up to a high standard, and you know the new machines look as good as a new Jaguar car with the finish on them. There’s massive advances in the quality, overall appearance and efficiency of the machines now.” So many businesses are facing a tough end to 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but Steve insists the future of Daltons Wadkin is very bright and business is as good as ever. “Alex has definitely got the passion for continuing the Daltons Wadkin name”, he says. “It has been going for over 120 years – there are not too many family businesses who can say that. I have no doubt the future for Daltons Wadkin is in safe hands. “Alex has the same mindset to progress the business as his dad and uncle had, so I would say the future is looking pretty good.” www.daltonswadkin.com

Make it with Merinolam – the new global laminate brand exclusively available from IDS
Merinolam ex-stock Luvih supermatt laminate in Aqua Green with FR+ Siberian Pike Oak, exclusively available from IDS
It’s not often that a major new laminate brand comes to the UK market presenting furniture manufacturers, designers and fabricators with premium quality materials suitable for a multitude of creative applications, but Merinolam does all of this and is exclusively available from IDS for nationwide delivery in 24-48 hours. Surface materials specialist distributor International Decorative Surfaces has agreed an exclusive partnership with world leading decorative laminate manufacturer Merino (www.merinolaminates.com) to launch a premium quality new collection shaped around the needs of the UK market.
John Bagshaw, MD of IDS, which has been appointed exclusive UK distributor for the Merino Decorative Laminates brand
John Bagshaw, MD at IDS, says: “Many sectors are grappling with challenges in the supply chain that are causing product shortages and delays. With Merinolam, we have committed to holding extensive stock on the ground so that we can assure continuity of supply, with the guarantee of accurate, on time delivery. That has always been at the core of IDS’s philosophy.” Merino is among the top five global producers of decorative laminate, manufacturing more than 18 million sheets per year and with a presence in over 80 countries. The company has a strong commitment to environmental and sustainability standards promoting a circular economy and conserving natural resources, with 70% of its energy requirements coming from renewable and green sources. It also takes its corporate social responsibility very seriously with community-based projects in education, nutrition, healthcare and female empowerment. Merino is committed to the highest standards in its manufacturing processes with certifications including Greenguard, FSC, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and EN 438. John Bagshaw adds: “We are delighted to become the exclusive UK distribution partner for Merino in this exciting expansion programme. Merino is well-known for its commitment to high-quality manufacturing processes, design-
innovation and to business practices that promote environmental sustainability, and these values perfectly align with IDS’s own principles, making them the ideal ethical and commercial partner for our business.” Through IDS, a premium quality range of 55 high-pressure Merinolam décors is now available with ex-stock availability in 24-48 hours and no minimum order quantity. Offering creative flexibility and high performance, over 90% of the range is available in FR grade and includes a contemporary range of super-matt anti-fingerprint laminates as well as speciality options including metallics, magnetic and solid core colours. The full range benefits from being supplied polycoated as standard for long-lasting protection. Merinolam is suitable for a wide range of horizontal and vertical applications and its availability in the UK market will provide designers, specifiers, shopfitters, fabricators and main contractors with a high quality, versatile and competitive material that can be specified with confidence in a range of sectors including residential, healthcare, education, architecture, construction and hospitality. “Drawing on our experience of supplying surface materials for over two decades, we have a profound understanding of what UK
41
customers need for projects. We’ve developed a market-focused selection of Merinolam décors which offer premium quality, creative flexibility and functionality which can be specified with absolute confidence in a wide range of environments,” says John. A major benefit of the new range is the dedicated Merino FR+ Fire Retardant Laminate collection which has been tested in Europe to BS 476: Part 7, passing Class-1 Fire Rating provided that fire retardant adhesive, backer and substrates are used. Class-1 FR laminates do not allow fire to spread further once the source is removed and extinguishes itself within a stipulated time, significantly reducing the risk of toxic smoke. John says: “In today’s fast-paced climate with tight deadlines to meet and penalty clauses that can result in losses of thousands of pounds a day, having access to high-quality FRgrade laminates ex-stock is a major benefit for customers, as it removes these obstacles and potential project derailers.” Postformable for optimum versatility across a range of applications, the Merino FR+ range is 0.7mm thick, is available in a standard 3050 x 1300mm sheet size and comprises a palette of 37 decors spanning a wide selection of plain colours, woodgrains and patterns. Answering the strong design trend for tactile super-matt textures, Luvih super-matt anti-

Luvih offers a range of eight contemporary plain decors and is available in two sheet sizes of 3050 x 1300 x 0.8mm and 4300 x 1550 x 0.8mm which gives the benefit of greater creative and fabrication flexibility. New ABS edgings for 800 decor surfaces During the past weeks, Ostermann has largely extended its diversity in ABS decor edgings. The range comprises new ABS edgings for about 800 decor surfaces from different board suppliers, delivered from just 1m and in every required width up to 100mm. Many companies have presented their trend predictions for interior design on this year’s digital spring fairs, along with corresponding decors, colours, and textures. To sum it up, with wood reproductions, it still comes down to naturalness and realistic textures. In increasingly flexible room concepts, harmonious wood decors are combined with colour-co-ordinated, sometimes quite striking stone or fantasy decors. To give furnituremakers as much leeway as possible for designing on-trend furniture, Ostermann has extended its range with new ABS edgings for about 800 decor surfaces. Its diverse selection includes wood as well as stone reproductions and fantasy decors with all gloss levels, from matt to high gloss – find all information by entering the search item “#Highlights09” at Ostermann’s website (www.ostermann.eu).
Wood decors – in all forms and facets New ABS edgings were referenced not only to the generally popular oak decors, but also to many other wooden finishes. Particularly worth mentioning are softwood reproductions, such as spruce or pine. However, there are also new additions among classics such as beech, maple, ash, elm or mahogany. And since Ostermann’s diversity does not stop with the classics, one will find various ABS edgings for surfaces with a walnut, pear tree, cherry tree or olive look. Always a match – stone decors It has become popular in modern living environments to combine wood finishes with solid-looking stone decors, carefully co-ordinated in colour. Both natural reproductions and finishes with fantasy elements are popular here. Ostermann provides many ABS edgings with a slate, granite, marble or limestone look and, for those who prefer special designs, others with concrete, Terrazzo and mosaic effects.
Imaginative material reproductions Textile finishes, or those that have the textile look, fulfil a recent trend – they stand for a kind of ‘new comfort’ in living environments. If one wishes to implement this look on furniture, one will find a solution at Ostermann ABS edgings, with textile decors. Many have a look of linen. Other than that, roughcast or rust are popular materials for furniture surfaces. Edgings with matching finishes are available for these as well. Diversity in terms of haptics The feel on the narrow surface of a board is becoming an increasingly important aspect, which is why ABS edgings are available with a matching embossing. In addition to matt smooth edgings and variants with a minipearl finish, there are more and more new products with a wood pore embossing, wooden structure, stone finish or textile finish. 01905 793550 s.parsons@ostermann.eu www.ostermann.eu

Introducing the brand-new Edition 60 from Striebig
45
The Edition 60, Striebig’s brand-new vertical panel saw To mark its 60th year in the industry, Swiss vertical panel saw specialist, Striebig, has launched a brand-new vertical panel saw – Edition 60. Designed specifically for single-operator use, the new model, which is exclusively available in the UK through TM Machinery, centres around an integrated panel-lowering device (PAV) comprising two panel-lowering units that position each panel automatically. This process eliminates the need to turn the sheet by hand during the cutting process, allowing for a precise and effortless cutting process that requires minimal handling by a single operator. Suitable for use with panels up to 3000 x 2159mm and weighing up to 160 kg, a third lifter can also be added for cutting large-format panels up to 5000 x 2150 that weigh up to 240kg. The new PAV system is also quick, offering an impressive feed rate of 5m/min under load and 10m/min without load. With additional features like integrated LED lights to guide you safely through the sawing process, you’re guaranteed optimised and short processing times. The new Edition 60 comes with numerous intelligent features designed to guarantee accuracy, speed and safe, hand-guided workflow. From a laser indicator for horizontal cuts and digital measuring systems on both the X and Y axis, to 17-pneumatically-braked support rollers and a pneumatic clamping motor carriage, the Edition 60’s design encompasses simple and ergonomic operation. It also features a user-friendly operating unit, robust wooden support wall, powerful, high-torque 5.5 kW (7.5 HP) saw motor and an integrated TRK dust extraction system
The Edition 60 features an integrated panellowering device (PAV), for single-operator use
for seamless integration into any workshop. Striebig’s exclusive OptiDivide optimisation software is also available on this model, offering further benefits including reduced wastage and time saving. Matt Pearce, MD of TM Machinery, adds: “With the introduction of the Edition 60, Striebig now offers the most extensive range of vertical panel saws on the market, with seven models providing varying levels of automation. The Edition 60 gives our customers more choice. They no longer need to choose a larger, fully-automated model if they’re looking to reduce panel handling
significantly. It’s ideally suited to small-tomedium-sized manufacturers who are looking to reduce labour and the risks associated with material handling and operator errors. “With the Edition 60’s lifters, which don’t add to the height of the machine regardless of the panel size, one man can cut a sheet to size, quickly and efficiently. And with the impressive speed of the panel lifters, the cut cycle is quicker, reducing the time between cuts without compromising on accuracy.” For further details, visit TM Machinery’s website. www.tmmachinery.co.uk

Innovative fittings and components from Titus Titus’ furniture hardware solutions have been improving homes around the world for decades. They increase the quality and facilitate assembly furniture, giving significant competitive advantage to manufacturers and improving the consumer experience. Their most popular components are the Quickfit TL5 ‘Full Metal Jacket’ dowel that provides optimal strength and reduces home assembly time by -50%, and the T-type concealed hinge that has a tool-free 3Way snap-on mounting. The T-type hinges with integrated soft closing are suitable for use on a wide range of doors with thicknesses up to 34mm. Their unique 3way snap-on mounting system makes them exceptionally easy to install, even on large, heavy doors with multiple hinges. The range has recently been extended to include pie-cut (bi-fold) hinges for corner cabinets, which fit standard drilling patterns and feature convenient ‘double lock’ opening. This means users can either open just one door leaf to get excellent access into the cabinet interior or they can fully open the doors by locking the hinge cup and make the door leaves work as one. The innovative Quickfit TL5 Full Metal Jacket dowels provide strong, reliable joints in all types of wooden materials, including MDF, chipboard and solid wood. This means that it is no longer necessary to use different dowels for different materials. In addition, the new dowels offer fast, tool-free insertion, reducing assembly time by up to -50% for home-assembled furniture. Alternatively, for maximum efficiency in volume production applications, they can be inserted automatically using Titus FastFit machines. To complement their hardware range, Titus offers new TeraBlack (Titus Enhanced Resistance Application) versions with a dark-grey non-reflective finish that is not only visually appealing but also highly resistant to corrosion. Monochrome – black and white is the timeless trend that is here to stay Monochrome will always be a timeless classic, with black and white being a colour combination that creates a minimalist yet striking contrast in living spaces. The monochrome trend continues to feature in fashion and interior design as a safe but pleasing-tothe-eye colour scheme. The use of black and white in a monochromatic interior gives a fresh, clean and elegant look to any room. Mixing Premium White and Black in Renolit’s new Premier Matt finish creates a colour combination with a sense of balance and a trend that is not dictated by changing seasons. By allowing one colour to be dominant, this ensures the palette is more comfortable on the eye. Renolit Premier Matt is a decorative PVC film that is treated with an innovative Physical Surface Technology (PST) to create a

matt appearance for furniture and interior design applications. The smooth to touch finish and appearance of Premier Matt means furnishings fit seamlessly into any room setting but also has the desired striking impact when placed against a contrasting colour. Black offers a sense of drama and modernism in an interior setting, giving a contemporary appeal to even traditional spaces. White is used to create a clean, simplistic finish to a room. Used on walls, furniture and the floor, white gives an impression of larger, lighter spaces. Warm monochrome is a modern-day newcomer to the colour schemes of interior design. Where black and white may appear too strict for some interiors and give a sense of starkness, warm monochrome interprets softer colours to create a blend of colours
Renolit 3D Thermolaminate Black Premier Matt is ideal for monochrome interiors
between the traditional black and white monochromes. By keeping one of the original components of monochrome but switching the contrasting colour for a softer version, a more gentle design is created. Graphite can be used to create an illusion of the darkness created by black in an interior while keeping Premium White as the dominant
colour. Alternatively, Black Premier Matt remains as the accent colour and Premium White is replaced by a softer Taupe Grey. This creates a compelling interior using a wider spectrum of the colour palette. Saviola – “the first and only 100% FSC wood-based panel” Stoke-on-Trent-based Panelco recently announced a partnership with Saviola, the eco-ethical Italian company, a group with a circular economy product focus which enables a well-defined, eco-friendly manufacturing process that focuses on recycling and upcycling wood-based products. This ethos has been developed into a process that is unique worldwide, and allows Saviola to remain at the forefront of recycling and upcycling wood panels. The keyword for products designed by Saviola is upcycling. The company collects recyclable wood from all over Europe to upcycle it through a process that is eco-friendly but with design at its heart, creating a specialist wooden panel that is 100% recycled and pressed with state-of-theart paper, texture and impressive designs. Saviola states that it was the first and only 100% FSC-certified wood-based panel manufacturer. In addition, the company always presents lower formaldehyde emission values than those permitted by E1 Class, making Panelco’s partnership for access to this incredible level of innovative products a clear and easy decision that should prove appealing to a wide variety of sectors across the UK. The choice on offer will allow these designs to be utilised in a new and on-trend capacity, as well as allowing for a higher standard of traditional applications. While Saviola may be different to what many will have seen before, the product maintains and presents itself well to traditional uses such as doors and furniture, showcasing deep and realistic textures, lifelike decor design and a
well-balanced mix of colours. These designs and textures are created at a dedicated research facility that provides modern designs that stand out, with high-impact marbles, subtle woods and abstracts, just to name a few. Saviola has clearly worked hard to develop its texture range, which near-perfectly mimics its real-life counterparts, aiding the design process with perfectly angled shadowing and feel, lending itself to an almostindistinguishable product from marble, stone or timber. Panelco has worked closely with Saviola to carefully select 26 decors to stock in the UK as a complete offering, with matching edging
also available. The decors showcase innovation and design, and represent some of the best Italian decors available. Each design has been meticulously and rigorously scrutinised to provide customers with the widest and highest quality range possible from Saviola. Saviola is a relatively new range to the UK, and provides opportunities for designers and architects to utilise impressive design options and eco-credentials, which Panelco is proud to present. To find out more, or to order samples, refer to the Panelco website, or call the company on 01782 392100. www.panelco.com

Broken plan, new opportunities Elizabeth Briggs, Category Manager – Sliding, Room & Building at Häfele UK, explores what the rise in broken plan design means for furnituremakers, and the solutions available to create flexible, versatile spaces. With almost a quarter of UK businesses planning to increase homeworking (ONS), furnituremakers will continue to see an increase in demand for their services to help homeowners create flexible living and working spaces. As a by-product of this trend, we’re already seeing a rise in broken plan living, as opposed to open plan configurations, due to its ability to form a distinct work zone for the consumer. Where open-plan refers to two or more traditional rooms – such as a kitchen and dining room – joined to form a bigger space by taking down partition walls, broken plan is a space that is split into zones using levels and semi-permanent structures to create separate areas. These structures can take many forms including custom-built bookcases, semi-open partitions or bespoke cabinetry that can be used to house hidden home offices, as well as storage or utility rooms. As a result, there’s a huge opportunity for furnituremakers, especially given that research from Häfele UK found that 40% of homeowners are planning to create a dedicated office space in their property. Slide away Sliding and pocket door gear systems are the perfect way to create clever workspaces within the semi-permanent structures that are central to broken-plan living. Using sliding door or pocket door systems, furniture makers can craft an office space that can open when the homeowner needs it, but hidden away in bespoke cabinetry at 5.30pm. Sliding and pocket door systems also have an added space-saving bonus as they take up around 1270mm less operating space per door versus a traditional hung door, making them ideal for compact homes. To help furniture makers create these clever options, Häfele’s in-house range of sliding and folding door hardware, Slido, has a comprehensive collection of
solutions for the evolving needs of the customer. Centred around an innovative modular approach, with standardised components for different load weights, it’s easy to find a solution for your project whether you need sliding, pivot sliding or folding sliding door systems. As well as featuring soft close options, Slido can be used with timber, glass or aluminium framed sliding doors, and for customers who value their peace and quiet, soundproofing variants are available too. Within the Slido range, furnituremakers will also find sliding door kits that do not require a bottom track, with the top track able to hold the full weight of the door. These solutions are ideal for sliding doors that are used to separate rooms, as well as a popular option for walk-in wardrobes, creating a seamless flowing space. Furnituremakers will also find emerging solutions within the Slido range that are quickly establishing themselves as creative, innovative products for the broken-plan home. While traditionally used in commercial environments such as offices or conference centres, moveable walls are a flexible option for the home. Slido W-Fold32 100T is one option from Häfele that allows a quick change from a large open lounge or dining area for example, into a closed-off workspace as required. To help furnituremakers navigate the world of sliding doors, Häfele offers a Sliding Door Specification Service. With one call to its team of technical experts, sharing a top-level design and door dimensions, they will work out the best solution, build a list of materials and provide a quote for what’s required. To save even more time, the Sliding Door Specification Service can be combined with Häfele to Order. This means sliding door gear can be assembled, packed, labelled and shipped to bespoke requirements for added ease and efficiency. www.hafele.co.uk/slido

Feel the force of Fusion and Fusion Long Since 1979, Italian firm Essetre has excelled in the project design and manufacture of NC woodworking centres. With regular innovative developments as standard, the company has recently introduced its Fusion and Fusion Long work centres. Fusion is a machine with the capability to both cut and edgeband pre-fab panels while using minimal space – this marks a big change from the traditional panel saw and edgebanding systems. Fusion will precisely cut and finish the pre-fab panels by use of both main saw and scoring blades. It is equipped with the latest edgebanding capabilities, with a glue application unit for edges up to 80mm thickness – the glue applied is either polyurethane or pre-melt types. For effective edge trimming, the machine uses a revolver head with four trimmers using copying devices. NC of the copying devices guides the
panel’s profile accurately, which ensures quality results on a variety of edge materials including melamine, laminate, ABS, unicolor and so forth. Thanks to the introduction of advanced technologies, and following Industry 4.0 directives, the end user can readily achieve the following from the pre-fab panels – furniture components, worksurfaces and tops, shelving and table tops. Fusion Long is a working centre covered by international patents that allows simultaneous sectioning and edgebanding of elements longitudinally in the required widths. Fusion Long needs reduced spaces and allows fully automated in-line production, without needing the presence of operators – thus revolutionising and complementing the traditional system, which Essetre says is 6 x more bulky. Fusion Long saws and edgebands the element
by joining together the proven system of sawing and edgebanding in a new group created with a double blade with engraver. Furthermore, two NC-controlled spindle moulder-units allow to obtain a precise and finished cut. Fusion Long, provided with the most recent technologies for edgebanding, has a gluing unit for edges up to 80mm high, with availability of melting and polyurethanic glue tanks and the relating pre-melting devices. The finishing of the various edge thicknesses is guaranteed thanks to trimming units provided with copying devices which are managed by the NC and follow precisely the bar’s profile, obtaining in this way the best results on edges of each material – for example, melamine paper, laminate, ABS and more. +39 0445 365999 commerciale@essetre.com www.essetre.com

CNC Machinery & Equipment 40 years of making specials standard
40 years of passion and innovation – no mean acheivement
In 2021, Stemas, located in Pesaro, Italy, celebrates its 40th anniversary as one of Italy’s leading specialist machinery manufacturers, primarily within the woodworking and panel processing industries. Stemas was founded by two engineers STEfano Cecchini & MASsimon Umbri, ergo Stemas was duly named, its personal identity and manufacturing ethic remains as intact now as it was at its inception. In the beginning company manufactured in a small way, sanding units, these basic units were then developed further into more sophisticated sanding systems dedicated high-quality finishing. From these basic machines, more specialised and bespoke execution sanding and finishing equipment was developed. From these early ‘special machines’ lays the basic DNA of Stemas and firmly remains today with the now, well-established company motto – “special is our standard”. “It was as easy temptation just to simply follow the crowd as others did,” comments Angelo Glenn Onario, current CEO of Stemas, “in terms of producing standard nondescript and run of the mill woodworking machinery, but Stefano and Massimo were made of sterner stuff, they were old school, engineers…” Angelo continues: “They relished a challenge, and soon Stemas built up an enviable
reputation as the go to guys for special execution machinery. They would go out to visit customers, make hand sketches of ideas, wherein the customer could not get costeffective solutions from standard equipment on offer, no AutoCAD back in the day, all these machines were created in the mind and then drawn by hand!” Stemas, growing year on year both in reputation and staff, is in a very considerable part down to the commitment of three of their senior staff – Angelo Glenn Onario (CEO), Marco Palazzi (service director) and Roberto Baldelli (automation director). They were all invited to become shareholders at their 25th anniversary and as recognition of their personal contribution to the company’s growth. Over the years the bandwidth of product offering, and problem-solving competences grew exponentially and the skillsets of the workforce is reputed to be, and is widely recognised as, second to none within the wood machinery manufacturing industry in Italy – so much so that they are regularly invited to provide solutions even from their competitors! Moreover, the size of their customers grew too, finding in Stemas not only a manufacturer for problem-solving solutions, but also a very reliable supplier, with its machines working for multiple shifts and in many cases 24/7, thanks to the high-quality of its design and the use of
world-class/first-class components With some of the biggest door manufacturers and panel processors in the world as regular year-on-year clients, Stemas has over the last 40 years built long-term relationships with its customers, all of whom want to gain that commercial advantage over their competitors, which Stemas maintains simply cannot be done with standard machinery. Even in the midst of the pandemic Stemas answered a call to arms from the Government and health authorities to help create a better and more reliant supply chain for face masks, Stemas and their partners produced one of the fastest, high-quality face mask manufacturing systems in the world. Like the vaccines, this system was designed and devised in double quick time with several being sold to the US, and they still have ongoing orders. “Specialist sanding machines still remain a part of the business, interior doors and door jambs, five-piece Shaker-style doors, windows, drawers, flooring machinery,” explains Lorenzo Esposito, technical sales and marketing manager. “Although the woodworking industry is still a major focus for Stemas, we work with PVC and aluminium manufacturers as well as developing intelligent storage systems,” continues Lorenzo. “We have been nicknamed by a UK leading woodworking figure as the Tesla of the woodworking industry!”
57
Fastest gun in the west Innovation is the prime mover for Stemas, and they have designed and developed what is now reputed to be the fastest, fully-automatic door routing and machining system in the world, capable, in its fullest execution as a turnkey operation, it is capable of producing three finished doors in a minute. The Perfect Door system is designed as a modular concept, wherein the line can be built-up in customised stages to suit the customer’s individual needs. For example, a fully automatic first-stage system can produce one complete door in just over 45 seconds. Perfect Door has certain features that traditional door routers simply do not have, nor can they be supplied. For example, in essence it does not require a full-time operator as it is a fully automatic/autonomous line, it will ‘check measure’ the door before machining starts, it will ‘talk’ in real time to the production planning dept and production managers. Generally, door manufacturers will have between three to five-plus traditional routers, with around seven operators or more in some cases, generally producing a door in around seven to ten minutes, that equates to between three to five doors in seven to ten minutes, combined with very high labour content eating into profits. In the same time frame, the Perfect Door fullyautomatic complete line, will produce circa 21 to 30 doors with one man in partial attendance, enjoying around a 300% + increase in productivity and labour savings in the regions of 500% - 700%, with the Perfect Door Step One, fully automatic line one will produce around 9 – 13 doors, again with only one man in partial attendance, +300% increase in productivity, and labour savings of +500-700%. With the Perfect Door, Step One fully automatic line one will produce around 13-20 doors with one man in partial attendance. In tandem with the Perfect Doors system, Stemas have been equally creative in the manufacturing of door jamb systems, from stand alone to fully automatic lines. Stemas have many such lines in Europe, in particular in Poland – which incidentally appear to becoming a major and dominant European force in terms of door and jamb manufacture. In the UK “Stemas have recently taken orders in the UK for a fully automatic Perfect Door System and jamb lines as well as five-piece door machinery,” says Angelo. “The UK purchasers of these Perfect Door systems will, without any doubt whatsoever, enjoy a huge commercial advantage over their competition and as a result will be able to enjoy a far more competitively priced product, much higher quality and yet still maintain a very healthy margin and/or increase.” Comments Lorenzo: “The Perfect Door offering is now very well established and proven technology worldwide, that said, just about every door and jamb system manufactured is still pretty much a bespoke offering for the individual client, when one fully considers the purchasing price of five routers and the operational costs
25th Anniversary – the ‘new’ shareholders from left, Roberto, Massimo, Marco, Stefano and Angelo
The two founders – “Old School Engineers”
of the same Stemas becomes the more costeffective system by a country mile.” Five piece doors systems Besides the interior door production, Stemas have also gained a very strong market position in the five-piece door (Shaker-style) manufacturing industry, from standalone/prototyping machines to some of the fastest lines in the market today. The five-piece-door machinery represents a major focus for Stemas supplying most Italy’s major kitchen door manufacturers. The Hybrid-Step double-side machines combine two different feeding systems to allow different operations on vertical and horizontal elements – milling, chamfering, hot-stamping, edge-banding, trimming, drilling, and doweling up to 40 pieces per minute. “However, customers can also choose the flexibility of the Flexy-Suite,” says Lorenzo, “which is composed of a series of stand-alone machines to manage the production of stiles and rails from the cutting of bars up to the assembling clamp, for a production of up to 400 doors per shift with only three to five men!” This Flexy Suite allows the small- to mediumsized kitchen manufacturer to enter into the production of five-piece doors, with the benefit of creating his own unique/bespoke doors, no longer having to have very large and expensive inventory gathering dust, no longer have to ‘pay through the nose’ for a special sized door, no
Edge sealing
longer have to order a minimum quantity when only one door is needed, no longer needing to ‘forward order’ stock and the risk this involves, and no longer having obsolete stock. “In most cases,” comments Angelo, “these machines allow entry into market and generally have a payback in around 12-18 months or so.” New developments “All of these current developments and ranges represent a significant proportion of our business, yet this is not enough for the Stemas DNA,” continues Angelo, “we are all constantly looking for new challenges – that is the reason why this year a new website, www.edgesealing.com, has been launched.” The goal is to bring a consolidated technology of the edge sealing with UV to a bigger scale around the world. In the last decade Stemas has helped many customers around the world to switch from MDF to particleboard thanks to the edge quality ensured by such process in the ProFilling machines. “The savings in material costs alone are off the Richter scale,” claims Angelo, “in many cases less than a one year payback, let alone the savings in production costs and labour. For many machinery manufacturers this is special – for Team Stemas, it’s standard.” +39 0721 282993 stemas@stemas.it www.stemas.it

Homag’s powerful CNC software guarantees effortless and efficient programming
Homag’s woodWOP CNC software has become known as one of the best and most popular machine programming systems for CNC machines globally. Not only are there over 80,000 satisfied customers worldwide, but also countless schools now use woodWOP as a teaching aid for CNC programming. The system combines workshop-oriented programming (WOP), CAD and CAM into a single software program. It makes machineorientated programming easy and costeffective, thanks to its large, three-dimensional graphical displays. 3D views support processing operations The woodWOP system permits close-torealistic depiction of processing operations, guaranteeing excellent programming reliability, states Homag. To help control, continuous monitoring during program generation can also be undertaken. All working planes are graphically displayed in 3D, including the workpiece, processing steps and clamping equipment. Trimming, boreholes and saw cuts can be programmed quickly and easily by entering the processing parameters, and can then be checked immediately in the graphics area. A great solution for small- to medium-sized manufacturers Capable of driving three-, four- and five-axis CNC
machines, woodWOP software is an extremely beneficial solution for small- to medium-sized manufacturers, where operators need to run multiple machines. Throughout the software program, the emphasis is very much on substantially simplifying its use. For example, different view modes such as transparent, semi-transparent and opaque make for more easily manageable programming, and simplify control of the suction cup positions. The process of entering parameters into the standardised processing dialogues is also easy, with self-explanatory symbols in the input masks and the use of additional graphic prompts. Simon Brooks, Homag UK’s MD, explains why the woodWOP three-dimensional graphical displays improve operators’ insight and control: “The focus of the woodWOP user interface is the large graphic area, containing a threedimensional view of the workpiece. It can be rotated, zoomed and shifted, as well as being displayed in up to three different views simultaneously, giving the operator an improved visual understanding and better control of the job. “The graphics are designed to enable interactive working – for instance, contours are created by clicking the mouse onto a background grid. For each processing operation, there is a dedicated application which allows,
for example, trimming and boring operations or saw cuts to be quickly programmed simply by entering the processing parameters.” Software system training The woodWOP software system is simple and easy for operators to learn. Online training courses and webinars are available on the Homag website. Homag is also committed to providing specialist operator training on-site at a customer’s premises or at the Homag ACADEMY, which has locations in 22 countries including the UK. Software forum connects users The Homag Software forum allows all woodWOP users to connect and discuss CNC production. Users from all areas of the furniture and woodworking industry can join and follow posts discussing the software. The forum is also a great way to obtain the manufacturer’s answers to specific queries, and for real-life software users to share their tips and experiences. Users can subscribe to forum topics, so they need never worry about missing a thread reply. A trial version of the woodWOP software is free to download from Homag’s website. 2020 has been challenging for many in the furniture and joinery industry – but VWM’s journey through the pandemic has been, commercially-speaking, very positive. “The Covid-19 situation was obviously a surprise for everyone last spring – but we feel we contacted with our customers as quickly as possible and worked closely with them and our agencies – and our business grew by more than +20% during that time.” Yet Jason believes challenges lay ahead. “We think the main difficulties will be with manufacturers struggling with the parts supply chain. Fortunately, we made the decision to invest in additional stock and pre-ordered machines and parts so we do now hold a good stock overall. Moving forwards, indications are that the market will slow in the short term but remain positive for the coming year,” says Jason. In other news, Jason mentions a new, fullyautomated CNC arriving in May. “This looks like a fabulous machine with auto-load and off-load – and available at a truly record-breaking price,” says Jason, “so this will be something to talk about in more detail later on. In addition, we are expanding our showroom space again, and this should be up and running very soon – there’s always plenty going on at VWM! “Given the challenges of the pandemic, we can’t really complain about the past year as it’s been one of our best-performing periods in our history. We’re celebrating 40 years in 2021, and to coincide with this we have a new website and company video going live in April,” he concludes. 01282 870077 www.vwm.co.uk

Effective CNC performance for an accessible price point Lancashire-based Exel CNC has been manufacturing and supplying CNC routers for nearly 15 years. One of the largest and most longstanding suppliers in the UK, Exel CNC has built an enviable reputation on quality and customer service. The company’s latest range of machinery includes the heavy-duty M1S series CNC router and the enclosed series CNC routing centres. “Never before have we been able to bring such capable machines to market at such accessible pricing,” explains Exel CNC MD, Mark Hepworth. “Being first and foremost an automation manufacturer has enabled Exel CNC to use their skill and knowledge to develop and improve this series. “The M1S is unrivalled in its category – a real heavy-duty CNC router which features superfast 60m/min rapids, a cast Z-axis assembly for maximum rigidity, LED status indicator, X-axis bellow system to stop dirt/dust ingress, powerful servo drives, latest handheld colour controller, platform sizes include 8 x 4, 3 x 2m, etc. The M1S also comes in auto toolchange variants. “The enclosed CNC routing centres are something that Exel CNC pioneered in the UK over the last 10 years. It came first as a dealer requirement to have our machines go into schools, they needed the safety aspect and were
developed from there.” Mark continues: “We have CNC machining centres that are enclosed, so why not CNC routers? It has several real benefits – it provides a physical barrier for the operator with interlocked cabinet, it contains the dust and debris and also reduces the noise impact. The benefits are obvious for those customers seeking machines with limited room, clean environments, or need them for secondary operations. We have customers with rows of these machines all nicely lined up. “Take our 1313M enclosed CNC router – it has a 4ftx4ft (1220x1220mm) working area with a
generous 305mm gantry clearance in the Z axis. Full servo machine, air-cooled spindle, vacuum bed, auto tool setter and much more, for only £13,995 ex-VAT – incredible value for such a machine,” says Mark. “We have a really good distributor network covering all industries. It is through our distributors that we implement a lot of improvements. We listen to what our customers want – instead of just selling stock machines, we offer tooling advice, production and fixturing assistance. The new series machines are already proving a big hit!” www.exelcnc.com

Specialist CNC machining solutions from JJ Smith
Comec MD Top XL CNC machine
For many years, JJ Smith Woodworking Machinery has offered specialist, bespoke equipment to suit customers individual production requirements. Rather than take a one-size-fits-all approach, the company has carefully selected a number of key partners to work with, each of whom are specialist in different but associated sectors of manufacturing. This is highlighted by the co-operation JJ Smith has established with three leading manufacturers of CNC equipment – the Comec Group, lntorex and Pade MZ. The Comec Group and JJ Smith have been working together for over 25 years, initially offering a range of mechanical drilling, slotting, shaping and cutting machines mainly for use in the solid wood furniture industry. As the company grew and expanded it entered into the design and manufacturing of a range
Pade MZ Pluris CNC work centre for volume production of sofa/chair frame parts
of specialist CNC machinery that can be adapted and used to produce a wide range of components. The Frontal series of machines consists of a vertical, automatic hopper feed loader, with a step-by-step throughfeed system which delivers the component to different machining stations which can include saw units, horizontal/vertical drilling, routing and end/face milling. This particular model of machine can be used for producing general furniture components, rails, tenoning/slotting window and door parts and also for machining drawer fronts. The MD series of CNC machining centres is available in three different versions – MD Classic, MD Top and MD Jamb. All of these can be configured with a number of different machining heads, including vertical and/or horizontal milling heads, and NC drilling groups which can be specified to work on all the faces/
ends of a furniture rail. In addition a C axis can be added, meaning it is possible to cut components to size with either straight or angled cutting. Another unique feature of the MD is that it can be equipped with an automatic hopper feed loading system to offer continuous production. The MD Jamb model is specifically designed for the volume production of door components and door linings, with the possibility to have automatic infeed and outfeed loading systems. Whilst lntorex are probably best known for producing woodturning lathes, four- and five-axis between centres, CNC machines now account for over 50% of their annual production with sales being made worldwide. These machines can produce a wide range of traditional-, contemporary- or complex-shaped furniture parts, along with stair spindles and newel posts. A unique feature is that they all incorporate CNC-controlled sanding heads, which allow for the components to come off as finished sanded items. In addition, thanks to the automatic hopper feed loading it is possible to set up for continuous, uninterrupted production. The TC1000 model is equipped with a CNC controlled milling head for shaping and then either one or two vertical/horizontal router heads that can perform other machining operations. The TMC model has five interpolated axes with a total of eight CNC axes that control the shaping head, sanding head, the sawblade for turning, and overhead router with eight position rotary tool changer. The working length capacity is either 1500 or 3000mm, while blanks with a section up to 300mm square can be loaded and machined.
75
Intorex five-axis CNC machining centre
On request, the TMC can be equipped with an additional ninth CNC axis for a vertical sanding unit to finish sand-turned components. The latest addition to the range is the TKC1500, which can be supplied with up to six different heads for shaping, sanding, milling and turning. All machines are supplied as standard with the intorEDIT 3D design software, while the TMC now also comes complete with the Solidworks and Solidcam software package. The sawblade that is used for turning on TMC and TKC models has been specially designed for lntorex to its exact specification, thus ensuring the very best possible results in terms of detail and finished quality of the turned part. Another unique feature that is available across the range is the patented eccentric tailstock which gives the facility to load and machine timber blanks that are off centre, which is particularly useful for producing table or chair legs. To date, nine machines have been sold into the UK, with one customer recently installing his second machine.
Finally, from Pade MZ Project, there is a complete range of CNC-controlled bandsaws, which eliminates the need for manual cutting, marking out and jigs, meaning the operation is much quicker and safer than when using standard manual bandsaws. They can be specified to cut either solid wood and/or flat panel material, with the top-of-therange Pluris model being fitted with router and drill heads, meaning it is possible to nest and cut sofa/chair frame parts from 2.5 x 1.2m sheets (on request larger), with the possibility to cut up four boards high, thus making the machine very productive. Lastly, also available is a full range of gantry-style five-axis CNC machining centres that can be used for a wide range of complex machining operations. There are now 15 Pluris machines installed at UK sofa and chair frame manufacturers, with one company running four machines. 0151 548 9000 sales@jjsmith.co.uk www.jjsmith.co.uk

Ecogate Power MASTER variable speed drive units adjust fan speed
The rise and rise of Extractly Ltd appears to continue unabated as the California-based technology manufacturer, Ecogate, Inc, confirms the company’s appointment as sole UK distributor for the Ecogate® range of energy-saving extraction control products. First introduced over here by Dust Control Systems (DCS) back in 2010, Ecogate technology has had a major impact on the UK woodworking industry, with a multitude of joinery and furniture manufacturing companies now benefiting significantly from the huge reductions in power consumption the system
can deliver – typically returning savings of between 50% and 75% on dust extraction costs with an average return on investment period of just two years for the majority of installations. Extractly’s technical director, William Kenyon, who has been involved with Ecogate from day one, is keen to stress that Extractly will continue to offer service and technical support for all UK customers with existing installations, and that any current warranty agreements will be unaffected by the changes. “Our focus is on customer satisfaction and long-lasting customer relationships,” says William, “and our aim is to
ensure our customers’ extraction systems are operating to their full potential, at lowest cost – allowing factory owners to concentrate on the business of manufacturing.” Ales Litomisky, co-founder, president and chief engineer at Ecogate, Inc, comments: “We’re delighted to be renewing our relationship with the team at Extractly, and I’m personally looking forward to following this next stage of Ecogate’s development in the UK. William and the entire Extractly team have demonstrated a keen understanding of Ecogate technology and are proven to be very customer oriented.

“With ‘real-time’ intelligent control providing exact extraction volume requirement, only when and where it’s needed, extraction systems with Ecogate technology installed use around one-third of the power consumed by conventional extraction systems”
Ecogate greenBOX 12, greenBOX NXT and greenBOX MASTER control units sit at the heart of the extraction system
“The successful application of Ecogate® technology and controls has been proven worldwide, across multiple industries, to improve the efficiency of dust and fume extraction systems. Installations of the patented system not only generate direct savings in electricity usage, but also benefit the working environment for employees, help improve business performance and, ultimately, make a contribution to the health of our planet.” Before Ales, along with uncle Petr Litomisky, patented Ecogate® energy-saving extraction control technology, manufacturers’ dust and fume extraction systems had basically worked on the same principle for decades – install a fan that’s powerful enough to extract all the air, from all the places in the factory where dust or fumes are being produced, all day, every day. The difference with Ecogate® technology installed on a dust-producing production line is that the system is custom-programmed to extract only when individual machines are running, and to extract only the minimum volumes required to transfer dust-laden air from each machine to the filter unit for collection. Potential financial gains are ruled by the laws of physics, but just a -20% reduction in fan speed will reduce power consumption by -50%, and in many factories, where it’s estimated that less than half of the machines are in use at any one time, even bigger savings can be achieved. Extractly Ltd offer a free site-survey to ascertain the possible savings that Ecogate technology could make but, as a general rule, electricity costs will be at least halved and, whether you have just one machine or a whole factory-full – the Ecogate greenBOX MASTER SRL® can
Ecogate motorised dampers are fitted into ductwork serving each machine, and open and close automatically as equipment comes on- or offline
control up to four extraction fans and as many as 180 workstations – the same principles apply. “The technology is just as effective when retrofitted to an existing extraction system as it is on a new installation,” says Will Kenyon. “The automated, motorised dampers are simply fitted into the ductwork serving each machine, and sensors report when machines come on or off-line. Ecogate control technology continuously adjusts fan speed accordingly, and the system also ensures sufficient airflow volumes to maintain minimum air transport velocity so dust and chippings don’t settle in the ductwork and reduce LEV control effectiveness.” With ‘real-time’ intelligent control providing exact extraction volume requirement, only when and where it’s needed, extraction systems with Ecogate technology installed use around onethird of the power consumed by conventional
extraction systems. In addition to saving money on electricity bills, every other part of the system performs more effectively and efficiently – reduced fan speeds mean less wear and tear on bearings, motors and filter media, and factory noise levels are noticeably reduced. The fully-automated, intelligent system provides accurate analytical data to keep operators fully informed of the system’s efficiency, and the lower energy consumption will also contribute to a reduction in a company’s carbon footprint. In addition, the ‘spare’ extraction capacity made available by reducing the fan speed gives business owners a margin for production line expansions without the need to invest in more powerful fans and larger filters. 01924 520462 info@extractly.co.uk www.extractly.co.uk

Assured specialist Inventair marks 30 years of extraction expertise
This month marks 30 years of Inventair. With this in mind, here is a brief history of how the company started, and how it operates today … Inventair was established in Bridlington, East Yorkshire in September 1991 by David Seed and his nephew, Bob Griffiths. The business was predominantly based around buying redundant dust extraction equipment, and giving it a
new lease of life by refurbishing the units and bringing them up to current requirements. The business grew, and David and Bob incorporated the refurbishing of woodwaste heaters, to run along side the dust extraction side of the business. In 1996, Inventair started to manufacture its own range of dust units – the MK range and the MTFA range.
“As the market for used equipment changed, we concentrated on the manufacture of new dust units, spraybooths and ductwork systems. Whilst still carrying on refurbishing previously owned equipment as and when required.” In 2007, Inventair started to design and manufacture its own range of woodheaters under the Clean Air Systems (CAS) brand. David retired in 2013, and his nephew Bob Griffiths took over the role of MD. “We have invested in multiple pieces of new machinery for our workshop over the last few years,” says Bob, “and this has seen production go from strength to strength. “As well as supplying to our own customers within the timber and joinery sector, Inventair also supply dust extraction equipment to 20-plus woodworking machinery dealers and fellow dust extraction companies.” With a purpose-built production facility, skilled engineers with direct experience of dust extraction and heat engineering, and a proud reputation of excellent customer service, Inventair is a very capable business which looks fair set to continue its growth for at least another 30 years. 01262 400919 sales@inventair.co.uk www.inventair.co.uk

DUST EXTRACTION & WOODWASTE MANAGEMENT
Sales surge for IWM’s impressive briquette machine In May, the UK Government launched the new Clean Air Strategy, and Newark-based International Woodworking Machinery (IWM) says it is in the vanguard of having its briquettes tested on a number of levels by an appointed Government energy-testing station. The results show that briquettes have a burning heat and calorific value similar to that of coal, but, more importantly, this renewable source of energy eliminates atmospheric pollutants found in fossil fuels and wet wood. In IWM’s Falach range, there are six models. The Falach 20 cube machine, capable of producing up to 20kg/hr of 30mm² cube briquettes, is deemed ideal for small workshops as it has a footprint of only 1m². The Falach 50 briquette machine is IWM’s bestselling machine, producing up to 50kg of briquette per hour – depending on material. It produces a 50mm diameter briquette, takes up little floor space and is available either freestanding or can be sited directly under extraction systems. To date, IWM says approximately 75% are sited in this way.
Then there is the Falach 100 briquette machine, the largest in the range, producing up to 100kg/hr, producing a 70mm diameter briquette. This machine is available freestanding or sited under the extraction system, making emptying dust bags a thing of the past. All IWM’s machines are designed to run all day and installation is claimed to be simple – just plug in and play. The machines can be fitted with a five-bag carousel unit that automatically bags 50- and 70mm-diameter briquettes evenly into each bag or box, weighing 20/25kg depending on the material being used. Customers are encouraged to send their woodwaste to, or visit, IWM’s demonstration area at its Newark showroom – or alternatively IWM can arrange a workshop visit to carry out a site survey. 01636 918280 www.iwmachines.co.uk

DUST EXTRACTION & WOODWASTE MANAGEMENT
Safe storage and handling of industrial woodwaste If a company processes more than 1000m3 of wood or wood-based products a year, then a permit is needed for wood machining process, under guidance note PGN-602. This guidance note covers the extraction and storage of woodwaste in the form of shavings and dust, and also covers the handling and disposal of off-cuts. As well as needing a permit from Environmental Health, manufacturers must also comply with ATEX and DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002). Ranheat Engineering, as well as being a leading manufacturer in industrial wood-fired boilers and heaters and biomass-fuelled boilers and heaters, also manufactures and installs a wide range of types and sizes of silos and storage bunkers for industrial woodwaste. Most of the systems involve a wood-burner, but not all do. Under certain circumstances, woodwaste will be blown into a trailer. But what happens when the trailer is taken away to be emptied? The answer is a buffer store in the form of a silo, so that production in the factory can continue while the trailer is away being emptied. Conical-bottomed round storage silos require only a single discharge motor driving an agitator arm at the base of the cone. With this silo arrangement the silo can be fully emptied. Some manufacturers provide a square silo with a round discharge mechanism – which means the silo can never be emptied. The Ranheat silos have accredited explosion panels fitted to the roof. Ranheat use a detailed computer model to calculate the number of panels needed for a given storage volume. The panels are accredited in batches, with a % being destruction tested. Ranheat also makes a range of storage silos than are for use with woodchips, that can be loaded with a bucket loader. These bunker silos have a hydraulic scraper mechanism that moves
A 7m-diameter 350m3 storage silo
across the bottom of the silo to a discharge point. They can also be used externally with a canvas top if loaded with a conveyor. Other discharge mechanisms are available, with flat-bottom silos containing a series of augers that move the material to a central discharge point. The augers are driven by two small electric motors with chain drives between them – just another example of a mechanism that can fully empty a rectangular silo. www.ranheat.com

SANDING & ABRASIVES
Sanding & Abrasives Mirka continues steady and progressive path to enable its customers to thrive
Mirka is known for its high-quality abrasives and innovative power tools – but how did the Finnish specialist navigate the last 18 months? Furniture & Joinery Production caught up with Mirka UK MD Craig Daycock, business sector manager for wood Chris Brook, and industrial sales manager Pete Sartain, to find out more. Given the months of tumult we have all endured since March 2020, how does Mirka characterise the last 18 months in terms of the company’s performance, its customers, and the wellbeing of its staff? Craig Daycock summarises: “Most of us appreciate that during Covid it has been a testing time for many reasons. At Mirka, the first thing we did was to adapt swiftly in line with Government Chris Brook, business sector manager for wood
guidance, which saw us reorganise our working conditions to keep everyone safe, and when things completely shut down, we adopted furlough conditions for our staff. As the situation developed, staff returned to work – many from home only, with managers working in a hybrid setup – but overall, the whole team kept well, and the wheels of the business kept turning.” In terms of commercial performance, against what has been a high-performing period of trade thanks to consumers investing in home offices, home interiors, garden buildings and even extensions to be able to work from home, Craig says: “Mirka performed well.” Highlighting how well the business has performed given the circumstances of the last 18 months, he says: “As a business, we successfully navigated 2020, and apart from one month we have exceeded all our expected targets, with some of them being beaten by a healthy margin. Overall, for the 18-month period, I would say we are up around +30% on our predictions.” Chris Brook confirms the positive situation: “The furniture and joinery sector’s recent strong showing is largely a result of the businesspositive stance adopted by the Government during the pandemic. The various grants, schemes and loans have undoubtedly helped businesses survive and even prosper, because they took advantage of what some would describe as a ‘mini boom’ for UK furniture and joinery manufacturing. In addition, these resources enabled companies to invest in all
parts of the business and strike while the time is right.” Turning to the bedrock of the business, we asked Pete Sartain what he was looking forward to now things were getting back to some form of normality: “First and foremost, I am looking forward to meeting our customers more regularly, and of course, en masse at trade shows. “As a team, we are looking forward to the W Exhibition in February, and our plans are now at an advanced stage. We will have at least one new product to show and a couple of interesting surprises for visitors, so stay tuned.” One of the cornerstones of the Mirka business has been innovation. Throughout the Covid period, the company’s research teams have, as always, been researching new abrasive and tooling solutions to bring to market that will ensure the customer has the right product for the job at hand. www.mirka.com

SANDING & ABRASIVES
Premium sanding variants on show and ready to demo at J & C O’Meara Established in 1945, Kündig is widely recognised as one of the most experienced and highest-quality manufacturers of wide-belt and edge-sanding machinery. Kündig has two manufacturing plants – one in Switzerland, which is also its headquarters and where the R&D and special projects are developed, and the other in Gotha, Germany, where the production of the standard wide-belt and edgesanding machinery takes place. In today’s market, where manufacturers are facing all sorts of different challenges in generating the right surface finish, Kündig has the experience to respond, and to offer a solution to what is seen by many as near impossible. Where first impressions count, manufacturers strive to achieve that something special, such as those requiring a sanding accuracy to +/0.02mm – to satisfy these demands, users regularly turn to Kündig to meet the tightest of tolerances for the final product. A familiar application for Kündig is in the woodworking industry, where its fixed-bed design has proven to give long-term accuracy – being fixed to the machine frame, with a sanding group that raises and lowers. This system has proven to be especially beneficial for calibrating heavy components – typically fire doors, where the fixed bed cannot move despite the weight of the door or the amount of pressure generated during sanding. This fixed-bed system is also a huge benefit for veneer sanding, where veneer-cutting technology
has increased, making the thickness of veneers smaller and smaller, hence making sanding accuracy more important than ever. To cater for a wider part of the market, Kündig recently celebrated its 75th anniversary with the introduction of the new Kündig Master, which offers an ‘out-of-the-box’ solution. The idea behind it was to produce a more cost-effective machine while still keeping to all the traditional values associated with Kündig. The machine is produced in the same factory as the Premium, Brilliant and Perfect models, but is manufactured to a standard configuration to allow serial production, hence reducing the costs to produce. The Master has a generous 1350mm working width, two sanding heads – first a contact roller, followed by a finishing pad, which is available for solid wood or as a segmented pad for sanding veneers. The Brilliant series of machines is aimed at those looking to achieve the highest-possible quality of surface finish. Simply placing the abrasive at a 10° angle eradicates the wavy scratch pattern inherently shown on traditionalstyle sanding machines. These machines are available in widths of 1100, 1350 and 1600mm as standard, and as either single- or multi-head machines. In recent times, Kündig has seen a substantial increase in the demand for purpose-made machines throughout different industries. Typical of this is a recent delivery to a company which wanted a machine to calibrate five-piece
Kündig’s top-quality sanders are ready to demonstrate at J&C O’Meara’s impressive new HQ in Burscough, Lancashire
doors ready to go straight to spraying, to then denib and also have the possibility of creating a rustic-style surface with a bandsaw finish. The answer was a four-head sanding machine, having contact roller, oblique sanding pad and cross belt to sand the rails – or alternatively using a 16-grit belt to create the rustic surface, followed by a carousel brush unit to sand into the profiles and soften the edges. In terms of edge sanding, Kündig’s Uniq edge sander is ideal for solid wood, veneered edges and roundings with oscillation of the whole sanding unit and four possibilities to work without change. Whether straight or bevelled, veneered or solid edges, the sanding belt unit is adjustable in height for complete use of the abrasive belts and comfortably covers all variants. The Uniq-S variant adds manual and automatic feeding and is equally as versatile as the Uniq – it handles throughfeed sanding of small or large workpieces thanks to the integrated feed belt system, and features pressure rollers which hold the workpieces against the feed belt. Despite the challenging situations of Brexit and Covid-19, Kündig has seen growth in sales, both in the UK and in other markets. Kündig’s official UK agent, J & C O’Meara, has all three sanding options on display and ready to demonstrate at its new headquarters in Burscough, Lancashire. 0845 833 0565 www.kundig.co.uk www.ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk

It provides multifunctional digital tools that are tailored to the requirements of the sanding machine. These tools can help minimise errors, make production more efficient and open up new optimisation capabilities. International furniture brand creates multiple surface finishes with Sandteq The Danish furniture manufacturer Hammel Furniture designs and manufactures home furniture including cupboards, dining tables and coffee tables. It develops furniture with a clear focus on functionality and flexibility and has established a leading international furniture brand. When the company needed to invest in some new sanding machines the directors undertook extensive research to find the right supplier. Four different manufacturers and their wide-belt sanding machines were inspected and tested. At the end of this process, Homag’s Sandteq machines impressed Hammel Furniture’s
directors with their quality and extensive application properties. The directors selected the Sandteq W-325 CH and W-345 RQEH models which, due to their configurations, are ideally suited to processing veneered and painted surfaces. With the two new Homag sanding machines, Hammel Furniture developed new ways of manufacturing a resistant painted surface. Veneer sanding, fine sanding and intermediate varnish sanding are now achieved in a completely different way than in the past. Commenting on this Jacob Helweg, production director, Hammel Furniture, says: “Foodstuffs such as coffee or wine are aggressive and attack surfaces, but with the Sandteq machines, high-quality resistant surfaces can be created during sanding.” Hammel Furniture is an excellent example of a business that has deployed Homag’s technology for over 20 years to produce popular, high-quality and affordable furniture, costeffectively. Power as good as from a socket The new SYS-PowerStation from Festool – boasting 1500 watt-hours, a full 2990 watts of continuous power output and a top power output of up to 11,000 watts, the portable energy storage device delivers a reliable power that lasts. Work whenever necessary, wherever necessary, with whichever mains-powered machine is desired. The SYS-PowerStation puts an end to those cumbersome lengths and lengths of cable and the constant search for power sockets, keeping the user always supplied with power wherever they go. The new SYS-PowerStation is also compact and portable, and stores up to 1500 watt-hours of electricity – that is equivalent to the energy supplied by 20 battery packs.
The new SYS-PowerStation from Festool promises greater working freedom
As such, it has enough energy for a full day’s work, making users completely independent of traditional power sources such as sockets, site distribution boards or generators. For example, using the SYS-PowerStation with the Kapex KS 60 sliding compound mitre saw and added mobile dust extractor, one can complete 560 cross-cuts – enough for a parquet floor. With the Planex long-reach sander and connected mobile dust extractor, which are also mains-operated, one could even sand a 200m2 surface. In contrast to its predecessors, the new SYS-PowerStation stands out for its zeroemissions operation. It is silent and produces no harmful fumes when in use – making the SYS-PowerStation better for health and the environment, as well making it ideal for use indoors. “The SYS-PowerStation turns every mains-powered machine into a cordless machine. Even power-hungry machines such as a large carpentry saw can be rendered portable and reliably powered by the SYS-PowerStation,” explains product manager Volker Kaupp. Then there is the comparatively low weight. At 16Kg, the SYS-PowerStation measures only 50-70% of its counterparts’ weight. The portable energy supply comes in the ultra-compact Systainer3 format. Its combination of high-performance capabilities and large power storage with compact design and comparatively low weight makes it a one-of-a-kind on the international market. The SYS-PowerStation is not only
compatible with all Festool corded power tools, but also supplies electricity to all mains-operated power tools from other manufacturers. It powers these without any loss of performance – just like a standard electrical outlet. Also located on the front, and therefore easy to access, is the USB-C port for quickly charging other portable devices, such as tablets or smartphones. www.festool.co.uk/powerstation

SANDING & ABRASIVES
Prime finish achieved with MB Fentech’s sanding solution
Based in north Devon, Principal Doorsets, established in 2014 by Rob Llewelyn and Stan Bond, has expanded into a manufacturing business covering 80,000ft2. During that time Principal has manged secure a reputation for the supply of high-quality doorsets for healthcare, education, leisure, commercial building, hotels and high-end residential properties with the most demanding specification and finish requirements.
Stan says: “A capital investment programme with carefully selected process machines to deliver the quality, reliability and more importantly, consistency necessary to ensure the best product and service is presented to our customers, the latest CNC machinery gives guaranteed precision and flexibility. You can rest assured that their fresh approach is supported by generations of experience to provide support service and quality.” With this expansion, the finishing department became an area that needed investment with the addition of further spraying equipment, and it soon became clear that labour costs for hand sanding were punishing the business. Stan and Rob were soon looking out for a means to sand and denib framing and architraves more efficiently. After talking to Dean Grimbley of John Penny Woodworking Machinery, it became apparent they not only needed a quick machine, but also a very accurate and flexible piece of equipment. The product mix was complicated, including profile sanding of frames, architraves in timber, MDF and veneer-wrapped MDF, to the denibbing of the same parts after priming or lacquer coating. The solution was the installation of the unique MB Fentech sander, with its automatic profile sensing and setting capable of working even with the smallest batch sizes. The parts enter the machine on a vacuum transport belt before they are laser scanned to detect the shape, from which the sanding heads move to position. The vacuum
belt holds the parts very precisely, and timed jumping of the sanding heads protect the lead and trailing edges from over sanding, even with very thin veneers. The machine fitted Principal’s varied workloads with the added benefit of being able to work with one operator using a part return system with lower demand, and it was simple to switch to throughfeed with a second operator stacking parts at the machine exit. All in all, Stan remarks on how much time the Fentech saved, and that the improvement and consistence of quality could not be matched by hand. 102 ADHESIVES
Impressive knot-filling system efficiently restores damaged wood Power Adhesives says its Knottec® system is the fastest way to repair knot defects and other forms of deep wood damage. The Essex-based adhesives expert says that knots and deep scratches in wood can be filled quickly and easily using a special knot-filling adhesive that is applied with a 12mm Tec® hotmelt glue gun. The system also includes a pair of handy heat-sink blocks that can be used to create a ‘form’ around any knot holes that go through, or are on the edge of, areas of wood that need repair. Once the damaged area has been filled, the Knottec knot-filling adhesive takes just minutes to cool before the excess can be trimmed with a flush plane tool, such as the Mouseplane. The repaired area can then be sanded, painted or treated as normal, achieving a high-quality finish to the restored wood. Knottec is said to be ‘perfect’ for making repairs to wood flooring, doors, window frames, furniture, and more. This knot-filling adhesive is also available in 15 different colours to help users achieve the best colour match possible. This impressive repair process for knot defects and other forms of deep wood damage can now be used with the fully portable B-Tec 308 and 808 glue guns. The compact B-Tec 308, and the larger, higheroutput B-Tec 808 battery-powered glue guns both feature an Eco-mode setting that will significantly extend the battery life for any given battery size.
B-tec 308 users can work for up to 5 hours hours, uninterrupted, while B-Tec 808 users can work for up to 3.5 hours. The B-Tec cordless glue guns have been designed to use the widely available Ryobi 18V ONE+ range of lithium+ batteries and chargers. When used with a Badaptor battery adaptor, customers can use their 18V DeWalt, Makita, Milwaukee, Bosch Professional, Ridgid or AEG battery with their B-Tec cordless glue gun, or in any tool that takes a Ryobi 18V battery.
Power Adhesives offers a choice of two additional mains-powered 12mm glue guns for use with the Knottec system – the light industrial Tec 305 and the professional Tec 820 – as well as the Mouseplane tool for trimming away excess glue. Cost-effective Knottec kits, containing everything users need to get started in a practical carry case, are also available. Power Adhesives manufactures the largest range of industrial glue guns and highperformance shaped hotmelt adhesives at its Basildon plant in the UK. Its products are sold through a network of specialist distributors around the world. A continuous programme of research and development ensures that the company continue to meet the ever changing needs of industry, with innovative solutions like the Knottec system. 01268 885800 sales@poweradhesives.com www.poweradhesives.com

The ultimate challenge – bonding with hot melt Polyurethane (HMPUR) or Polyolefin (PO)? What’s best? To manufacture a profile or panel nowadays is quite easy, as the technology of foils and machines has remarkable evolved in the last years. What remains crucial is the choice of hotmelt adhesive – physical bonding (polyolefin or EVA)(Thermoplastic) or physical + chemical bonding (HMPUR)?(Theromset) Anthony Rook from BRIT-AD LTD provides an explanation: “All materials have different characteristics,” he says. “Polyolefin (PO) is an adhesive where bonding only takes place physically (melting of the glue, application and bonding by cooling) and then heating the profile, the glue activates again (thermoplastic). “Hotmelt polyurethane adhesive (HMPUR), on the other hand, bonds by two steps: the first is physical (melting of the adhesive, application and the adhesion occurs by the reduction of temperature); and then the second phase begins after processing, where the chemical crosslinking between the materials and the adhesive takes place (theromset). This chemical reaction will give the laminated profile a very high level of water and temperature resistance,” says Anthony. “These two aspects are essential for materials intended for the production of kitchen and bathroom furniture but are also very important for transportation in containers where high temperatures of above 70°C and humidity can be reached. Another advantage of HMPUR over PO is the wide range of foils and substrate materials that can be processed. “HMPUR adhesives are also preferable in terms of sustainability and energy savings as they are used at low temperatures (110-140°C) compared to PO which has to be applied at 160200°C so certain raw materials can burn quickly causing blockages in the application systems, In addition, the application coat weights of HMPUR
are 30-50% lower than the coat weights of PO. “In the field of interior doors,” says Anthony, “HMPUR adhesives have also made it possible to qualitatively raise the strength of jambs and architraves.” The photograpgh shows an example of a door jamb glued with PO adhesives. The use of HMPUR adhesives avoids the obvious deterioration of the final product.
Today, thanks to the new generation of equipment – melters and glue heads etc – which have been developed to use any kind of adhesive, hot melt polyurethane glue is still the most versatile adhesive,” concludes Anthony. Among the wide range of WPR-TAKA HMPUR adhesives developed for specific application needs the most used ones are: • 2308.28P – this adhesive is for the lamination of profiles and panels, especially when high glossy surfaces are required. This glue has excellent wettability, long open time, suitable for various foil types and features a good initial bond strength • 2308.25P – this has been developed for the wrapping of MDF, chipboard and wood. The 2308.25P has a good open time, excellent bond strength and it is ideal for complex geometries and high working speeds. Readers who wish find out more about the WPR-TAKA’s HMPUR adhesives, or further information on other applications, should contact Anthony Rook at BRIT-AD LTD. 07484 341294 arook.ba@gmail.com www.britishadhesives.co.uk

Updates Salvamac, the people at the centre – 2021 is another positive year! All indicators are growing, confirming the validity of the strategies adopted to cope with the economic and structural changes that have occurred in many markets. For Salvamac, which recently celebrated its birthday, it is time to make an assessment of a long and intense industrial history. A company that today seizes every opportunity, perhaps also looking for a new “social approach”... “After a record-breaking 2019 and a 2020 that ended with an extraordinary growth, we did not expect similar satisfaction in 2021.” This is how co-owner Christian Salvador views the preliminary data of the multinational woodworking machinery specialist group. “We carried on along the path we had set ourselves,” he continues, “working to consolidate our presence in many markets and to experiment with new opportunities where we are less known. And the results were not lacking, allowing us to close an important three-year period, during which we have accompanied the growth in turnover and the machines produced with a fine-tuning of the company organisation. “Because selling more requires producing more, giving more and more certainties in terms of service, the ability to guarantee
Salvamac co-owners Ziemowit Dolkowski (left) and Christian Salvador
“In Europe, the growth was made possible by the acquisition of new market share, to which was added the consolidation of the presence in the UK, a market with important results in recent years and which this year – thanks also to the commitment to a deep-rooted on-site presence – has allowed Salvamac to have an edge”
continuity and quality in the relationship with customers and resellers is of paramount importance. In Europe, the growth was made possible by the acquisition of new market share, to which was added the consolidation of the presence in the UK, a market with important results in recent years, and which this year – thanks also to the commitment to a deep-rooted on-site presence – has allowed Salvamac to have an edge. “Our sector is becoming less and less profitable and, in turn, is asking for more and more investments and an originality that I feel is sometimes missing. Everyone is talking about innovation – originality is a different concept, it means being different not only in the product but also in the ideas, in the way of dealing, in the human aspects. “Seeing the business not only as coated steel with a few electronic circuits and some cables, but by placing people ahead of everything – something that is perceived less and less. And, in my opinion, human relationships and ethics will have greater importance than in the past.”
107
Wood cutting with 3S – solid, simple, safe “The ethical message goes through the details. The Salvamac optimising saws, such as the SalvaPush 2000, are in themselves an ethical product, because cutting wood with these machines means saving 5-15% of the raw material. It also makes work easier and safer for the operator – it is only necessary to load and unload or to mark the wood, so reduces the strain on the worker, who can be moved to more qualified tasks,” says Christian. “Furthermore,” adds Salvamac co-owner Ziemowit Dolkowski, “the recent evolutions in the entry-level range of the semi-automatic cutting saws, combined with the Salvastop 100 device, have made it possible to achieve incredible results. We have done our best to make our machines even easier and to make wood optimisation an essential part of the process for quality and affordability. “The software that is entirely ‘made in Salvamac’ for Salvastop 100 will also allow us to offer strong developments in the future, constant implementations that favour the best integration of our saws with the upstream and downstream phases,” says Ziemowit. “Many producers build machines to which the customer must adapt. As per our philosophy, the customers can follow their own way of working, and do not have to adapt to the machine.” Salvamac Air & Painting – another step forward Thanks to Salvamac’s entry into a market which, for over 30 years, it has been oriented towards delivering high-quality products, it is continuously gaining ground in various markets, with an offer that, remaining faithful to the company’s philosophy, ranges from filters and dust-extraction to systems for painting booths, and which includes solutions for companies of different sizes and needs. The Salvamac Air & Painting division saw “tremendous” growth in 2021, with the move to a new, larger building of 2500m2 on a total area
Manufacturing cross-cut saws
Salvamac Air & Painting division’s new building
of 5000m2. Marco Trasente, head of the division, explains: “We have much more space to increase our production and our stock, but we are also investing in new technologies, such as in a new production system that includes a new, very powerful laser cutting machine and a folding line with fully automatic loading and unloading. “In particular, the most recent projects and products confirm Salvamac’s success also in the extraction systems – especially the high-tech
extractors of the SuperDep series. These special filters are designed and manufactured using the highest technologies. They are very versatile filter groups, which take up little space, suitable for indoor and outdoor use, extremely functional in extracting dust and wood chips.” The near future – the people at the centre “In over 20 years of experience in this business, I have had incredible satisfaction,” says Christian. “We strongly believe in human relationships – our customer is not a serial number but a person with a name and needs. They must be satisfied and happy with our machines in order to smile! The people must be at the centre of everything! “Let’s say that, unlike many others, we stand up and assume responsibility for what we do! We have to believe in what we do, and have to combine that pinch of emotion with a great deal of calculation and intelligence – think as if you were a giant multinational but have the necessary agility to move very quickly. Because it’s not always the big fish that eat the small ones – sometimes the fast ones eat the slow ones … and, in the next few months, we’ll have some incredible news!”

Xylexpo – work in progress for the event launch Xylexpo, the biennial world exhibition for woodworking technology and components for the furniture industry, is changing its settlement period, moving from spring to autumn, to meet the investment needs of visitors who, after the pandemic, are confronted with a radically changed exhibition calendar. The event, promoted by ACIMALL, the association of Italian manufacturers of woodworking machinery and tools, and organised by CEPRA, will take place from 1215th October 2022 at fieramilano Rho. With this decision, Xylexpo will be the starting point of an innovation cycle that will span the 2022-24 period, reaffirming its role as “the ideal stage” to preview the new technologies developed by industry players in these years of almost total absence of exhibition appointments.
Recognised as a principal international exhibition of high technology for woodworking, Xylexpo will take place concurrently with BI-MU, the biennial international exhibition of machine tools for metalworking, which will be held in the halls facing the Xylexpo area. The synergy between the two exhibition events – which have already agreed on total and reciprocal admission permeability for the 100,000 operators expected in Milan – will allow Xylexpo to increase its visibility with the international public, for the benefit of the companies exhibiting at the event. Details of the forthcoming event, plus the presentation of the many novelties that will characterise the next edition of Xylexpo, together with the application form, are now available online. www.xylexpo.com

The trailer section is entirely run on solar power taken from the roof-mounted panels.
