As I write, shortly before Christmas, many conversations are rolling around my consciousness of the incredible year just gone … and a few looking forward to the new year coming. In our industry, the year heralded a return of sorts to face-to-face meetings and events. KKB Birmingham set the tone that other events would follow insofar as there were less exhibitors and visitors but that both parties welcomed the opportunity to get back together. Holz-Handwerk, Woodtech, Sicam, and Xylexpo continued that theme overseas, whereas at home, companies also, and alternatively, invested more into in-house events as a positive and targeted way to asses a supplier’s products and approach. And whilst individual events are inherently worthwhile, nothing can quite replace the massed events. From a political perspective, the events of 2022 will live long in the memory, very much for the wrong reasons. The situation was tough before the Tory turmoil began … and quickly became a lot worse with market reactions causing huge damage. Then the inexorable rise in interest rates fuelling a chase for higher wages … and here we are heading towards Christmas with the postal, railway and nursing services perhaps not unsurprisingly striking for considerable pay rises. Overlay this homebuilt pain with an international war in mainland Europe and incredible rises in fuel costs all leading to a cost of living crises … all as businesses continue wrestling with survival in a post-pandemic environment.

Yet throughout the year, what rings loudest is the resilient performance of our industry, against all these odds. Whilst I appreciate some will not be having the best of times right now, conversations I am having in mid- December with woodworking machinery and materials suppliers across the UK have been really upbeat. Industry colleagues are convinced that yes, there will be ‘a modest reset’ or a ‘minor bump in the road’ for the coming months, but beyond that they are telling me that the medium- and long-term prognosis for the British furniture and joinery industry is bright and full of opportunity … it’s there for the taking.

Three new appointments at First Install in Salford

Salford-based furniture installation and interior fit out specialist First Install has underlined its plans for growth next year with a trio of new appointments.

Part of The First Interiors Group which operates nationally and also has a manufacturing base in Ipswich and furniture business in Leighton Buzzard, First Install has ambitious expansion plans for 2023 and the new team is tasked with ensuring these growth objectives are achieved.

Based at First Install’s warehouse on Fairhills Industrial Estate in Irlam, the three new appointments are Liam Croft, Tom Hindle and Tom Sexton. All three will report into head of group sales and operations Mike McVey.

Previously operations manager, 29-year-old Liam Croft has been with First Install for three years and has been promoted to head of operations. He will now oversee the day-to-day operations of the

Irlam base, from warehousing and logistics to the installation teams working for clients out on site.

44-year-old Tom Hindle joins as commercial manager responsible for developing and implementing an effective commercial strategy that delivers on the growth aspirations of the rapidly expanding business and ensures continued success.

Finally, 33-year-old Tom Sexton assumes the role of key account manager with the brief to retain

and nurture key relationships and support the growth of the company by identifying new opportunities and maximising new prospects and leads.

All three bring a wealth of experience to their new roles having worked in the industry for many years in similar roles for competitor businesses.

IDS’ MD John Bagshaw retires after 40 years' service

After a career spanning more than 40 years of service, John Bagshaw, the MD of International Decorative Surfaces, IDS, has decided to retire.

John was instrumental in establishing IDS in 1999 and he has built IDS into the UK’s leading specialist distributor of decorative surfaces, generating well over £100 million in annual revenues and employing over 500 incredibly committed and capable team members across 16 sites in the UK.

Having led IDS through the Covid pandemic and its recent buyout by Chiltern Capital, John will now hand over the reins to Andy Sutton, IDS’s long-standing Commercial Director, who moves into the role of CEO. Andy will be well known to many of IDS’s customers, suppliers and employees, having worked closely with John over the past 21 years.

The Complete Kitchen Company invests in HOMAG EDGETEQ S-380 edge bander

The Complete Kitchen Company, situated in Wellington, Somerset was founded in 1995 by Tony Ellis. A kitchen fitter and qualified carpenter/joiner by trade, Tony has built the company’s success and excellent reputation on quality, value for money products and firstclass service.

All its furniture is manufactured in two purpose-built units totalling 16,000 sq ft of floor space. The company has two retail outlets under The Complete Kitchen Company brand, as well as suppling a large developer market and trade studios throughout the South West.

Updating our edge banding capabilities

“One of our edge banders was coming to the end of its life and while it was still working, edge banding technology has moved on so we felt it was the right time to invest in a new machine. It was important that the new edge bander would help increase our output capacity, whilst at the same time enable us to take advantage of the benefits of PUR glue.

“PUR provides an almost invisible glue line between the panel and the edge tape; it is also much more resistant to moisture and has higher thermal resistance properties, so it’s ideal to use in the manufacturing of kitchen cabinets, work surfaces and bathroom furniture.

“After discussing our requirements with HOMAG’s area sales manager, Simon Durant, we decided to invest in an EDGETEQ S-380 edge bander and XES 200 glue station.”

With PUR glue, there can be challenges in processing, particularly if there are extended interruptions to work, such as overnight or over the weekend, when the glue can go off.

The HOMAG XES 200 glue station eliminates these issues. A compact unit with a footprint of less than 1 sq m, it enables easy, efficient switching between different colours and glue types.

The station stores the glue application units in a vacuum; this delays the bonding time so that the PUR glue does not harden during an interruption to production. It then pre-heats the glue application unit to minimise downtime before use. Also, cleaning or glue change can be done automatically without interrupting production on the edge banding machine.

Quickfit TL5 dowels, which are used in conjunction with Titus Cam5000 cams, incorporate an expanding steel sleeve that provides high resistance to torsion and pull out. This ensures rigid furniture construction, with complete freedom from the tendency for joints to loosen over time. Furniture using the dowels can also be disassembled and reassembled repeatedly without compromising joint integrity. The dowels are designed for insertion into a 5mm hole and, on insertion, they positively and reliably engage with the hole, greatly simplifying subsequent assembly steps. If you want to combine materials and surfaces in a trendy way next year and set colourful accents in the process, you will not be able to avoid matt and warm red tones. Fashionable are edgings with a rusty brown, terracotta or wine red colour...

At the current furniture and supplier fairs, wood and stone décors in combination with matt plain colours are the order of the day. In addition to a variety of grey tones, it was mainly shades of green as well as warm yellows and reds that caught the eye.

Rust or Paprika?

Are you searching for a colour that goes in the direction of paprika, terracotta or rust? Then Ostermann recommends the ABS edgings Bison, Oxide red or Ceramic red. The shades range from light rust to earthy terracotta to warm copper brown and are reminiscent of the intense colours of dried and ground paprika.

Due to the orange-yellow colour components, the edgings can be combined very well with light wood décors or surfaces in rust look, but also with concrete or black metal elements.

Wine Red is always a fine choice

Less yellow and more bluish colour components can be found in the Ostermann edgings Rosso Askja, Wine Red and Rosso Jaipur. The two Rosso variants, by the way, were sampled by Ostermann to match the extremely matt surfaces of the same names by Arpa Industriale. They combine well with dark wood decors, but also with dark marble or other dark stone decors. The new trend colour “gold” is also a perfect partner for wine reds.

Edging or full service?

European legislation is continuously improving regulations of fire safety in buildings.

Part of the regulations refers directly to building materials used in construction and coverings.

Depending on placing and role, different elements of a building must fulfil certain fire classification.

VWM delivers improved CNC router performance for Screentek

Based in Chorley, Lancashire, Screentek is a successful British designer and manufacturer of high quality furniture for offices and corporate spaces. With high expectations from their customers, Screentek’s manufacturing capability likewise needs to be on point.

With Screentek having many CNC machining centres from different manufactures, it was time to look at upgrading some of the older machines with newer, faster machining capabilities and to increase production with a flexible machine and software system.

Screentek’s Head of Operations, Martyn McKendrick, began to research numerous CNC router supplier options, one of which was VWM Woodworking Machines based in Trawden near Colne in Lancashire. He reached out to Managing Director Jason Varey and had an initial discussion. After checking out numerous other potential suppliers, Martyn opted to work with VWM.

“Screentek decided to source their CNC router solution from us not only because of the inherent high quality and very competitive pricing of our machines, but also our strong service-oriented ethos,” explains Jason. “Our superior site back-up often wins us work and it turned out to be a key issue here, that and our broad product range of machines VWM offers stands us in good stead with our customers.”

Jason also points out that Screentek opted to go with them because of the breadth of

machines and industry expertise that they provide. VWM offers machines and equipment from the likes of Robland, Lange, Salvamac, Casolin, Steton, Falachi, Inventair, Purtsch and others.

Screentek decided on the highly capable Technos 2132 MD CNC router – a set-up which is ideally suited to nesting production. “The 2100mm x 3200mm table machine (Y and X axes) is our largest table size in the MD range featuring a 250mm working depth on the Z axis,” explains Jason.

“Complimenting the wide range of machining available on this machine is a 12-position tool

rack sited at the rear of the machine. This allows it to perform automatic tool changes throughout the program giving a wider range of tooling options when machining – and to speed up production time.

“Additionally, there is a fixed tool probe at the rear of the machine to guarantee accuracy between the tools on depth of cut as there is no manual setting needed. The machine also has automatic stops around two faces of the bed to locate boards correctly every time.

“The 9kw router head is capable of delivering all of Screentek’s machining needs with an inverter driven at varying spindle speeds up to

24,000rpm. All axes are designed with servo motors on precision helical racks. The servo motors are controlled from Premium Innovance Servo drives to ensure accuracy every time with rapid axes speeds of 50m/min. This is accompanied by two EuroVac 250m3 vacuum pumps and the manually-operated eight-zone matrix bed to ensure all parts are held securely during operation. The brains of this machine is the Syntec 60CA controller which has a very user-friendly operating system.”

In terms of what the new machine has meant to Screentek, Jason says: “It has improved their performance as our software is much more user-friendly and has far more features than before. Also the Technos machine is a more accessible machine which also benefits from quicker feed rates and a far superior vacuum system enabling the customer to successfully complete nesting production.”

The machine is fitted with reduction boxes to the X and Y axes for greater power, light beans to the loading area, a machine guard rail to three sides and full CE regulation.

How has VWM navigated the challenging last two years, what does the future look like? “The past two years have been an excellent trading period for us,” says Jason, “we anticipated that from July onwards in 2021, it would be a very quiet period and this would continue through to June 2022, but this did not happen. Looking forward, we have two full joinery shop fit-outs scheduled in January and five CNC machines to install as well.

“Looking back, Covid was a

fantastic trading period for us. We did struggle a little with certain supply chains, but on the whole, it was a fantastic growth period – in 2019 we supplied 19 CNC machines and that rose to 23 on 2020 and this number continues to grow. Couple this with our other product lines we have seen a very sharp up turn,” says Jason.

“For some time our most attractive product line has been our impressive Technos range of

Although confident Jason is aware that the current economic situation will have an effect. “We can see a small downturn coming but we think it’s more a seasonal one rather than a recession – UK companies produce some excellent products, and this will continue to grow as our manufacturing gets stronger, our stock levels are still very good, so we are not worried at the moment.

“The challenges for 2023 are really down to the economy,” says Jason, “if we continue to talk ourselves into recession then it will happen, but most manufacturing sectors are still going very strong and as long as we can get supplies in then demand will continue to be there. In terms of products, we have an exciting range of laser products arriving in February 2023, so we are opening up a new market place for ourselves in this sector,” concludes Jason.

Kimla CNC technology; routers, waterjets, fibre lasers

‘Kimla are unique in the market. They have approached the design of their products from a very different standpoint to the majority of other CNC manufacturers. This is immediately evident in the overall build quality but can also be seen in the software and control system,’ comments Daltons Wadkin Managing Director, Alex Dalton.

Founded by award winning Polish entrepreneur Przemysław Kimla, the company spent its first years developing software and electronics, providing CNC systems for third party manufacturers. This included manufacturing PLC’s, inverters and drives – a complete eco system for computer numerical control. Blade Off is a predictive system of direct detection that eliminates any kind of accidental contact between the operator’s hand and the blade. This is thanks to smart sensors that can identify and recognise the human body from materials that can come into contact with the blade. The system triggers even before the blade is accidentally touched or the operator gets too close, by activating a barrier that protects the whole danger area around the blade.

Should a possible collision situation arise, the system automatically excludes the blade and stops the program running, without damaging any part of the machine.

A further bonus, that makes this system even safer, is that the detection is not based on reelaborations/predictions made by algorithms, nor optical detections that could be read as calculation errors or poor visibility of the video camera.

Furthermore, the protection is enhanced on three sides of the machine (piece entrance and

The system also activates with high cutting speed, without slowing down machining, and includes the possibility of an unlimited reactivation, that does not influence the cutting precision nor the machine’s performance.

Startech CN K

The Startech CN K is a compact three-axis machining centre which also made its debut at Xylepxo. It was developed for any kind of routing, decorations, scoring, production of signs and 3D model prototype.

The CN K also provides machining in absolute safety: its integral cabin, with internal LED lighting, guarantees the operator’s safety and keeps the surrounding area clean, as well as dramatically reducing the noise produced by machining.

The three-axis machining centre is unique in its kind with its 2.4kW electro-spindle with R25 attachment generally used on more powerful machines.

Shortened lead times for a number of Masterwood CNC machines

As suppliers of parts and materials, across all industries, endure the ongoing global struggle, Masterwood GB was facing delivery times of up to six months for new machines. As the demand for these is still going strong, Masterwood GB have pre-ordered a range of machines, to go into production at the Rimini factory in Italy.

The machines are built to mid-range specifications, with the ability to retrofit additional options, such as waste conveyors and a fourth axis, so every machine can meet the customer’s requirements without the need to compromise. Framing the future with Weinig

With a heritage spanning over 150 years, the upholstery specialist, Alstons, has become one the best-known sofa manufacturers in the UK and continues to provide furniture outlets with British-made sofas from its premises in Colchester. Following the sale of the business in 2015, the award-winning manufacturer has continued to invest in its 8000sq m manufacturing facilities, purchasing a new Weinig Opticut S90 Cross Cut Saw and Powermat P1500 Moulder with EM100 feeder to increase output and reduce running costs in its saw mill.

In 2020, the decision to replace two of the companies most integral machines in its sawmill was taken. “After 23 years of service, our trusted Weinig Opticut 200 roller-feed cross cut and Weinig 23E moulder – which we had been using to manufacturer Birch piece parts for sofa frames – were showing signs of age,” begins Michael Parker, Facilities Manager at Alstons.

“We look after our machines and make sure a Weinig engineer comes to service them each year but there comes a time when you have to weigh up the practical implications of running an older machine. At some point, they will become obsolete and spare parts will be impossible to find. The fact that Weinig still holds parts for a 23-year-old machine is testament to the build quality of these machines but we needed to think longer term and the knock on effect a failing machine could have on production at a later date. Then there was a question of technology, speed and automation. Machinery has come a long way in 23 years and we didn’t want to get left behind.”

In 2020, the cross-cut saw was replaced with a brand new Weinig Opticut S90 push-feed Cross Cut Saw, which removed the manual work involved in passing timber through the old saw, providing more accuracy to the ‘cut-to-length’ product and avoiding a further secondary cross-cutting process later in production. With a clear distinction between the output, quality and cost-savings associated with the new machine, the Weinig 23E moulder followed suit. In the summer of 2022, it was replaced with a Powermat 1500 and EM100 feeder. “The cost and time-saving benefits of running the two new machines side by side was immediate,” recalls Michael. “The set-up times on both machines were more than halved and the need for manual set-up and regular adjustments were a thing of the past.”

Alston’s moulder took the longest to set-up when working on small batch runs that required one of five different radiuses and profiles. “It was a laborious process and required a certain level of skill,” says Michael. “The operator had to change the cut-ter blocks, wind the heads up and down and amend the top, side and bottom pressures every time we wanted to complete a short production run. Now, the Powermat 1500 is pre-programmed and ready to go at the touch of a button.

allows us to change tools within a matter of seconds safely and it’s really easy to do. This has seen the set-up times on this machine reduce from 20 minutes to just five. When you think we could be running 10 different jobs on the moulder in one day, the easy set-up process alone saves us over three hours a day and that’s before calculating the increased speed of the production cycle and reduced handling associated with EM100 feeder we installed alongside it.”

Additional time saving has also been put down to the moulder’s user-friendly design, which includes its intuitive machine controls and tool accessibility, and the additional EM100 feeder. “The EM100 feeder allows for cut to length material to be fed via the hopper feeder rather than feeding long lengths and then cutting after-wards. The long timber lengths caused some slippage from time to time and made working with timber as long as 4.8 metres labour intensive. Now, operators are not pushing timber through. They simply load the hopper and the machine does the rest. This not only streamlines the production but also feeds the machine uniformly, which eliminates marks on the timber.”

Intelligent tooling options were also included on Alston’s Powermat 1500 and supplied by an external tooling specialist. “We opted for a reversible Tip Tooling system with constant radial settings,” says Michael. “This allows the machine to run at higher speeds of 8000rpm and not 6000rpm and, if required, gives us the flexibility to remove more material more quickly, accurately and to a better finish, adding to our efficiencies. This was an upgrade but we knew it would allow us to effectively machine lower

grade timber suitable for sofa frames.”

The intelligent inverter-driven motors also simplify the running and maintenance of the moulder. Michael says, “Like many manufacturing companies, skilled labour is often difficult to come by. The Powermat 1500 offers a solution. The machine monitors the complete machining process, including the top pressures and notifies the operator if it detects any potential problems, avoiding damage and expensive maintenance costs. The machine also comes with a remote monitoring package that allows engineers to dial into the PLC and access the machine’s diagnostics remotely to reduce any future repair costs. We’re yet to use this but it’s something we’re looking to use on both machines in 2023.”

Alston’s energy consumption has also greatly improved. “We couldn’t have fore-seen the energy crisis but we’re pleased we made the changes when we did,” admits Michael. “The overall

running cost of the moulder has reduced from 74kW to 58kW per hour and the speed each batch is completed has reduced by 20%. Plus, each energy-efficient IE3 motor offers us a 15% saving. It soon adds up. We’re also able to turn the motors down to reduce energy consumption when performing simple jobs like ripping.”

Due to the speed and accuracy of both machines, the sofa manufacturer now machines the same amount of timber in four days as it previously did in five – not only reducing energy consumption but also giving Michael the flexibility to use his operators in different areas of the mill. “Our wood mill is the most labourintensive part of our business but thanks to machines like these, we see this changing. We will al-ways need a skilled team of frame-makers and upholsterers on the floor but technology will allow us to create a more streamlined production process that makes our employees’ lives easier.”

Over the last few years, renovating old houses and apartments has been in vogue. Most of these buildings date back to the period between 1960 and 1980, meaning there is a lot of work to do – every surface needs to be renovated and the related sub-surfaces indoors must be prepared.

Sanding is required when renovating and restoring old structures ‒ in all possible configurations. It’s not uncommon for certain parts of the building to remain occupied during a renovation, making clean work with low volumes of generated dust all the more important.

Due to the increasing demands that customers place – with regard to the quality, durability and sustainability of the surface and materials – the requirements for painting businesses are also increasing. Ultimately, a surface is only ever as good as the preparation of the subsurface.

painting business as well as for the customer, who often remains living in a separate area of the building during the painting work. For every requirement there is an individual solution. You just have to know the best way to use it.

Many sanders – which one to choose?

“There is no single, universal sander – the same is true when renovating. It always depends on the main requirements to be met,” explains Philipp. For example, is a high material removal capacity required, or a particularly fine sanding finish? Or do large wall and ceiling surfaces have to be sanded right into the smallest corners?

There are specific sanders for every task: Long-reach sanders in various configurations, numerous eccentric sanders with different sanding strokes, rotary sanders with eccentric motion and different sanding disc diameters, as well as orbital sanders. “Every painting business works differently. This makes it difficult to recommend a specific one to choose. In general, I would give the following recommendation: For painting businesses that often perform drywall construction work, it is worth buying a longreach sander.

“For smaller surfaces on walls and ceilings such as in guest toilets or in stairwells, I recommend the handy ETS EC 150/5 eccentric sander. For renovating windows with damaged old paintwork around the weatherboard, it is worth using a Rotex RO 90 geared eccentric sander. It has four functions: Coarse and fine sanding, polishing and triangular sanding. The RUTSCHER RTS or DTS orbital sander is suitable for corners and smaller surfaces.

“The RTSC, DTSC or ETSC cordless compact sanders are extremely practical for jobs performed outdoors or on scaffolding – where there is no power source. And if there is no power source for corded sanders, the new SYSPowerStation is there to help,” explains Philipp Stahl.

entrance that shapes the building’s external appearance? If so, it’s all the more important to think about the correct approach in advance. This often poses the question as to how much of the original material can be preserved.

This is not only true of the doors, but of course of the frames as well. The doors are first examined, meaning old coats are checked and damaged areas in the wood are determined. The existing paint layers can be sanded smoothly

and reliably with the ETS EC 150/5 or ETS EC 125 eccentric sander, to name a couple of tool recommendations. With the right speed, loose pieces are removed without too much pressure and intact surfaces are roughened.

“We recommend that you use abrasives with a grit from P180 for water-based paint, and a grit from P150 for alkyd resin paint for lightly sanding the surface,” explains application engineer Philipp Stahl.

Hard-to-reach areas on profile grooves and transitions can be resanded using an especially adaptable abrasive sponge. After lightly sanding the old paint, you can fill small holes and damaged areas. Of course, dust extraction is a must when lightly sanding.

After sanding, you can vacuum the sanded surfaces thoroughly with a mobile dust extractor, and, if necessary, you can clean up with an anti-dust and tack cloth. For intermediate

New HETAS registration scheme to maintain RHI payments

Alexander Franklin, Director at Ranheat Engineering Ltd, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of Industrial wood-waste burning equipment. This month we look at the new HETAS registration scheme for Biomass Service Operatives.

HETAS was originally formed to provide regulation of suppliers and installers to the domestic market. This was rightly so to protect consumers from “Cowboy installers” Wood-burning domestic stoves if not installed correctly can be lethal.

The new HETAS registration scheme is to become a requirement for service engineers working on installations that are on the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat incentive. (NDRHI)

User of the NDRHI in their annual submission to OFGEM will have to supply a service sheet from a HETAS registered service provider’s registration number, the make and model of the system. OFGEM will then cross reference this number with the HETAS register to ensure that the service provider has the relevant training on the machine that is getting serviced.

This is to avoid the unsafe situation or a HETAS approved domestic chimney sweep from being able to service Industrial Biomass Installations of all sizes including Part B permitted installations and industrial installation that now come or will come under the Medium Combustion Plant Directive. (MCPD)

This is like asking a Gas Safe registered plumber to go and service a gas fired power station.

They would be totally out of their depth and might lead to potentially dangerous situations.

All Industrial Wood Waste boilers whether on the RHI or not come under Local Authority or Environment Agency control.

Part of this control is to ensure that the plant is tested annually by an INDEPENDENT test house.

Industrial Biomass Installations are complex highly specialised installations with a lot of control. This is because in 2013 a NOx limit was introduced as a permit requirement and a lower particulate level.

OFGEM adopted this lower particulate limit as a condition of being accepted onto the RHI long after 2013. Since 2013 the local authority required this to be met by Part B permitted installations.

The testing required by HETAS is at a far lower standard than required by local authorities and just requires the service technician to do some basic test to ensure the system is in the correct ballpark for emissions.

The new HETAS registration scheme seems to ignore the legislation that is already in place. Most HETAS registered Biomass Service personnel will not be aware of the permitting regulations or the need for independent tests being carried out by Accredited test houses. Most HETAS registered operatives will not have the equipment to test an industrial installation for NOx and particulate, they will not be able to measure Formaldehyde or HCl.

These are all required for a permitted installation.

The requirements to meet the conditions of a local authority permit or Environment Agency permit (SEPA) in Scotland, is enforceable by law.

HETAS registration is required to meet OFGEM RHI payments. This means this is important to a lot of our customers. OFGEM and HETAS are introducing this system to try and drive-up standards. As those not burning Industrial Wood Waste do not need to have permits and annual tests. For old biomass systems at 1MW, they are only going to be covered MCPD in 2025 and 2030. This HETAS scheme is designed for those system that are not already under exacting legislation and annual tests.

It does feel that Industrial Wood Waste system are already tightly regulated, and this is just adding additional administrative burden to good actors trying to improve standards with the bad actors. I am willing to go alone and work

with HETAS and OFGEM on these points because they are trying to drive up emission standards. A few changes to the rules and the implementation will mean that this new system will achieve an improvement in the emissions of all NDRHI systems.
