My colleagues and I made a welcome return to Germany in May spending over a week attending the globally significant and thoroughly impressive ‘twin’ trade shows of Interzum in Cologne and Ligna in Hannover.

Almost immediately, a measured confidence was clear and apparent to us as we navigated the enormous halls (and the distances between them). The return of these two mega-events were quite a joyous occasion, not only from our perspective, but also from the many exhibitors we spoke with at both events. Many readily confessed to being a little apprehensive beforehand, mainly due to the time-lag since the last event, and also whether visitors would return in such numbers and whether the appetite for investment would be there. But thankfully, those concerns were quickly allayed as the over-whelming majority were having a very positive experience. A full report on both shows will follow in the July issue.

Events of this nature are very important for UK furniture and joinery manufacturers to attend to when possible, primarily in my opinion because they present a ‘compare the market – live’ experience that would otherwise be very difficult to experience. Please don’t get me wrong, I think the proliferation of the ‘at home’ events has been a good thing, even more so when you’re focused on a specific supplier, and you have existing positive relationships. Bur nevertheless, getting the best available technology and products, sourced from across the entirety of the supply sector has never been more important to UK manufacturing businesses, especially when you factor in the UK’s relatively low productivity per employee and the paucity of skilled labour – undeniably, well-researched investments are crucial to the success and longevity of businesses in the furniture and joinery sector.

For those looking for their next show fix, April and May next year has developed into a interesting triple-header! Firstly, Materials & Finishes (previously known as W Exhibition) is taking place at the NEC from 19th-22nd May. Overlapping that by two days, what many regard as the industry’s second major international event, Xylepxo, has returned to its traditional slot in May taking place from 21st-24th. Preceding both these events, we have Furniture Component Expo, organised by the British Furniture Manufacturers trade body, and it opens its doors on April 24-25th. Something for everybody there …

I trust you enjoy the issue, and as always, don’t hesitate to reach out and let me know your thoughts.

Xylexpo returns to traditional May timeline

The 28th edition of Xylexpo, the biennial international exhibition of woodworking and furniture technology, is moving back to May –specifically from 21st-24th May.

Xylexpo has traditionally always been held in May, since its foundation. The pandemic emergency had forced the organisers to choose a different time slot in October, building a different scenario and new partnerships to help exhibitors and visitors go back to business in a successful event.

The challenge was successful, as Xylexpo 2022 was certainly the industry’s most successful event after the Covid storm.

“In harmony with all the most important industry players, we have accurately considered all the alternatives and the role of our exhibition

BFM appoints new MD

as a primary promotion vehicle. This process has led us to identify the time slot from the 21st to the 24th of May for Xylexpo 2024, for the first time from Tuesday to Friday, a better fit for the current requirements of exhibitors and visitors, especially our international audience,” said Luigi De Vito, president of the exhibition and

Acimall, the association of Italian woodworking machinery manufacturers, which owns and organises the event.

“We are defining all the details of the new project, even more focused on multimedia, and we are working to bring all industry players to Milan, offering a one-of-a-kind dynamic event, with plenty of initiatives, that can achieve the best results in terms of culture, promotion and business”.

The exhibition will be held at FieramilanoRho in the east side halls, near the underground station and all the highway, railway and airport connections, to simplify the mobility of Italian and international operators who are expected to attend in high numbers.

The British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) has appointed a new Managing Director, with extensive experience in the furniture and home interiors sector.

Phil Spademan joins the trade body in the leadership role, working with the BFM Board to further strengthen the association’s links with the furniture industry and the wider public.

His track record in the sector includes seven years at Ercol, where he held the role of Sales and Marketing Director.

Phil has also held leadership roles at Nielsen Design and Siren Furniture.

Nick Garratt, Chairman of the BFM, said: “We welcome Phil to the BFM and look forward to working together to represent our members and the British furniture industry as a whole.”

Weinig and Essetre have announced the conclusion of a strategic co-operation agreement in the area of CNC joinery machines. Forte joines forces with Välinge Innovations and enters into new furniture assembly click technology Threespine ID

Forte, as a leading European manufacturer of self-assembly furniture, announced today that it has partnered with Swedish company Välinge and been granted a licence to use the revolutionary new Threespine ID click furniture technology.

Maria Florczuk, Board Member of Forte Group: “Forte’s mission is to create a better home. That is why when I first saw Välinge’s solution, it just clicked with me. It brings a new consumer experience during assembly making it easier and more intuitive. At the same time, the possibility to conveniently dismantle the furniture extends its lifecycle and facilitates its recycling which is another big step towards one of our most important goals for the upcoming years – sustainability”, she states.

“I am convinced that by joining forces with an innovation leader such as Välinge, together we can provide better solutions to both our customers and consumers.”

The innovative click furniture solution Threespine® ID, is a radically different way to assemble and disassemble furniture. Using an effortless process that makes assembly up to ten times faster than any other conventional option, almost completely tool-free and

There are good reasons why Forte is the perfect RTA furniture manufacturer in Europe to use this exceptional new technology for its selected future product programs: the company’s market size as well as its own state-of-theart production facilities and many years of experience in furniture

manufacturing make it possible to integrate the new Threespine ID click technology into existing processes in a very short time. For Maria Florczuk, this is a meaningful step towards the future: “Of course, this integration required major investments and rescheduling, but we are completely convinced! This new

technology will be a game-changer for RTA furniture and the customer experience. Välinge has succeeded in creating an impressive innovation here and we are thrilled to be able to accompany and help shape this journey from the very beginning.”

Johan Hallin, Senior Key Account Manager Furniture at Välinge Innovation, is also very pleased with the collaboration so far: “We are very happy that Forte has decided to use our ground-breaking technology and to integrate it immediately into selected programms. The discussions have been cooperative and goaloriented right from the start, and we have been thinking directly in terms of concrete solutions and implementations. The partnership between Välinge and Forte fits perfectly – as it should be in furniture assembly.”

Founded in 1992, Forte is a Polish, stock-listed, family-rooted and internationally leading RTA furniture company. With four large production facilities in Poland, Forte is known for its functional design and high-quality products, which can be found in many large furniture chains and shops around the world.

CDUK announces change of ownership

Leeds-based supplier of surface materials and complementary products, CDUK, announces a change of ownership that sees Managing Director, Andy Noble, acquiring the business from Gary Baker.

Founded over 40 years ago by Geoff Baker and business partner Toni Hibbert, CDUK has built a strong reputation as the exclusive distributor of Corian® Solid Surface in the UK and Ireland.

Mr Baker, as he was known at work, discovered Corian Solid Surface on a business trip in 1976 while on the hunt for a product that could be used to create an integrated basin for bathroom vanity units. In Hong Kong, he learned about Corian, the material manufactured by US materials giant DuPont, which set Geoff firmly on the path to success. Since then, CDUK has become one of the world’s largest purchasers of Corian® Solid Surface and has been a key player in creating the UK and Ireland solid surface market.

Since 1979, CDUK has developed a highly skilled and creative network of design and fabrication partners and helped to advance the range of solutions and applications for the market-leading surface material. Business ownership was then passed to Geoff’s son Gary, who joined the CDUK family in 2006. Geoff held the role of Chairman until his passing in 2021. The announcement of the change in ownership is a testament to the vision and dedication of the Baker family, who built a successful and resilient business that can foresee and respond to shifts in market trends and changes in customer behaviour.

The new owner, Andy Noble, joined CDUK as National Sales Manager in April 2013 and was appointed Managing Director in 2020. Andy carries over 17 years’ experience working in the surface industry and, working closely with Gary Baker, has contributed to changing the perception of the business from a material supplier to a trusted design partner

for architects, designers and fabricators.

Under his direction, CDUK has continued to expand its offering to grow with its customers and market demands. This has resulted in a series of exclusive partnerships with leading innovative brands including PaperStone®, The 1810 Company and, more recently, The Good Plastic Company, as well as in a stronger and successful relationship with DuPont as the sole distributor of Corian® Solid Surface in the UK and Ireland. In line with its innovative ethos, in 2021, CDUK went through a rebrand that showcased its evolution and its ongoing journey towards continued success with its loyal customers and new partners. With Andy having been part of the CDUK team for over ten years, the change in ownership demonstrates his belief in and commitment to the company and its progressive future. Together with his leadership team, Andy will continue to build on the legacy and values of the

Baker family, providing customers and the wider design community with innovative solutions and expert advice to deliver outstanding projects that will last the test of time whilst being kinder to our planet.

Gary Baker, outgoing owner and chairman at CDUK, comments: “Since CDUK was founded nearly 45 years ago by my father and Toni Hibbert, we’ve prided ourselves on offering great service to our customers as well as being at the centre of the solid surface industry through distributing Corian. I am proud to be handing on the business to Andy with whom I have worked closely now for over 10 years.

“Over the last couple of years, Andy and his senior management team have taken on more and more responsibility for leading the business. It was really important to me to have a succession plan involving people who understand where CDUK has come from and who will maintain the values we have always held dear. At the same

time, the company is in a great place to thrive and adapt to new challenges. I look forward to seeing how Andy and his team grow and develop the business in the future.”

Andy Noble, managing director at CDUK, comments: “I’m incredibly proud and lucky to have been given the unique opportunity to continue the market leading work established by Gary and his father Mr Baker over the last 44 years. We work with some excellent supply partners, not least Corian Solid Surface with whom we have a longlasting and fruitful partnership, as well as some world class designers, fabricators and manufacturers who turn our surfaces into the outstanding applications and projects.

“Added to that is an enthusiastic, forward-thinking team at CDUK who I thoroughly enjoy working with. Having worked with them for ten years, taking ownership of the company is a great opportunity and I’m very much looking forward to connecting with new communities and markets with a wider portfolio of surface solutions in the future.

I’ve been extremely privileged to have spent many years working with Gary and Mr Baker. I thank them for everything that they have taught me and the opportunities they have given me. As we look to the future, we won’t forget our history. I’m certainly very optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead.”

John Neill, country sales leader Corian Solid Surface, UK & Ireland, comments: “We are delighted with the new announcement allowing CDUK to continue to thrive and service their customers with Corian Solid Surface. From marketing and specification through to technical support for our strong customer base, CDUK is an outstanding channel partner. We wish all the very best to Andy and the team as they transition ownership and look to go from strength to strength, building on our established history and positioned to grow with future developments in the market.”

AES Group Machinery UK Ltd – it’s official!

In line with their plans for further growth in the UK and the overall expansion of the AES Group, AES have now set up a UK headquarters based in Lancashire. This investment shows a clear sign of continued commitment towards the UK and Ireland which has seen year on year growth over the last five years.

The new showroom will have several CNC machines on display from nesting to CNC drilling to pod and rail and five axis machines. There will also be beamsaws and

edge banders on display of varying specifications and price levels, all of which will be available for demonstration.

The new facility will also have training rooms for software demonstrations and pre delivery training to ensure the integration of new machinery is made as seamless as possible and customers are well prepared as opposed to learning ‘on the day’.

Customer support of course is always one of the main considerations for anyone purchasing a new CNC machine

and AES are looking to change the landscape of owning an industrial CNC. All new AES machines carry a free lifetime remote technical support warranty and AES UK will also offer fixed price servicing making sure customer investment is well supported and remains cost effective over the long term.

In short, AES UK coupled with the backing and resources of the AES Group aim to give the best possible customer experience from demonstrations to delivery to after sales care.

The UK based AES trained

technicians can offer support either by phone, by remote connection or of course arrange to make site visits as and when required.

This is a very exciting time for the AES Group allowing them to work closer with customers in the UK and Ireland and this latest subsidiary joins AES Europe based in Belgium, AES America based in North Carolina and of course their main manufacturing facility having several factories in Bursa, Turkey. 0800 083 8844

AMS has supplied a complete new factory workshop for Showell Packing

Advanced Machinery Services, with the trademark Wadkin Bursgreen has supplied all the woodworking machinery for a completely new packing factory in Wolverhampton. Showell Packing was established in Wolverhampton in 1981 as an export packer producing specialised timber packaging across a broad range of sectors.

Last year, Showell Packing contacted Advance Machinery Services (AMS) seeking to replace all of their machinery to improve efficiency within their already well-run operation as part of a process of continuous improvement as well as speeding up their production, improving the finish of their products and make the operators

jobs easier with more reliable machines.

Stuart Howard, a director of Showell Packing said: “Because AMS have handled the maintenance and repair of our machinery for several years, when we decided that it was the moment to change our machines, a member of our management team visited the AMS showroom in Leicestershire for a demonstration. The visit was very informative and we were able to gain a thorough understanding of how the new machinery could help to advance our existing processes.

The AMS showroom has more than 35 machines on display and ready for a demonstration. The fact that visitors can see

the machines in situ, try them out cutting some wood and ask the questions that you have to their experts, helps a lot to clarify technical doubts and see how they are going to improve your workshop.

Showell Packing bought three cross-cuts, one WB500 Auto CNC and two WB500X Upcut saws, a WB3216 Premium Plus wall saw, a WB 600H narrow bandsaw, a Wadkin Bursgreen BSW/HD rip saw, the bag extraction units and a rebuilt Wadkin PBRhd re-saw.

Stuart Howard said: “We are very happy with the Wadkin Bursgreen machines. We manufacture specialised timber packaging with these machines. They are used on a daily basis for around eight hours each and they have proved to be excellent so far.”

He continues: “AMS were proactive in meeting our requirements and provided excellent service in respect of delivery and installation – the AMS engineers planned the installation around our current working requirements. We also received comprehensive training from the Wadkin

Bursgreen trainers which was invaluable and well delivered. This level of excellence matches that which we are already accustomed to receiving from AMS in respect of service and maintenance.”

AMS director, Stephen McGloin amplifies the virtue of working with AMS: “When you choose a Wadkin Bursgreen machine from AMS, you don’t get just a machine, but a whole team of experts at your side ready to guarantee you a comprehensive service in your workshop.

“For your peace of mind, AMS has regional engineers throughout the UK for installations, maintenance and breakdowns; they can supply spare parts and tooling as well as operator training courses with an accredited certificate valid for years years. Is possible to get all what you need in your woodworking workshop from one supplier? Yes, it is possible with AMS.

Becky Faulkner, a Manager at Showell Packing said: “We have been happy with AMS from first contact and this happiness has only increased as we have realised the efficiencies of the machinery compared to that which it replaced.

She continued: “We shall certainly choose AMS again in the future and we encourage other current and potential AMS customers to put their faith in the AMS team with whom we are so impressed”.

Hoffmann provides cutting edge performance for AJB Group

AJB Group specialises in the design and manufacture of high-quality internal joinery, external doorsets, windows, composite doors and mouldings. Established in 1999, the company provides a high calibre service for residential, commercial renovations and newbuild developments of all sizes.

AJB’s talented youthful workforce are like a breath of fresh air bringing life into their product range and they believe this is where timber meets perfection’. They continue to strive forward with modern methods of manufacturing combined with advance technology which creates the hub to their success.

In the woodworking industry the mitred corner has always been recognised as a sign of high value and quality, especially in door production. The joints, when finished using the Hoffmann Key offer strength, durability and stability whilst the process of production offers simplicity and speed. AJB found all of these attributes in both the Hoffmann MS40 SF Double Mitre Saw and the Hoffmann PP2-H-DB Pneumatic Dovetail Routing and Dowel Boring Machine. The perfect combination in the fabrication of AJB Group’s impressive doorframes.

The Hoffmann MS40 SF double mitre saw is designed to simultaneously cut one left and one right hand mitre with each machining cycle. Accurate, repeatable mitre cuts are achieved in a variety of materials, including hard and softwoods, wood related materials (MDF, plywood, particleboard), plastics and non-ferrous metals such as aluminium.

The heavy-duty design of the saw heads and precision machined components as well as the use of industrial quality carbide tipped saw blades assures perfect cuts with no burrs or tear out. The ideal double mitre saw for small and large shops when accurate and efficient mitre cutting is required.

The Hoffmann PP2-H-DB Pneumatic Dovetail Routing and Dowel Boring Machine is a freestanding version specifically designed for mitred corner production. The machine cycle begins by pressing the foot pedal. The work piece is clamped pneumatically and the unit’s router the dovetail slots and drill the dowel holes. The work piece is then released. The joint is completed using Dowels and Hoffmann Keys W1/2/3/4. Extensive development has been AJB’s footprint to becoming a manufacturer of the highest quality in modern and traditional joinery. They have designed a product range that not only satisfies the performance and technical criteria of today’s industry but exceeds all expectations.

“We focus our attention on engineering timber and timber like products to the highest possible degree and then take it one step further. We take a raw material and engineer out all of its natural defects to provide our client with the very best in carpentry and joinery. With intelligent in-house designs, accurate estimating, a state-of-theart production facility, we can deliver success without any hesitation,” Amarjit Binji, AJB Group 01524 841500 info@hoffmann-uk.com www.hoffmann-uk.com

Based in the North east of England PWS since 2018 invested in industry leading paint finishing systems and offering its customers a comprehensive range of colours with many on stock or very short lead times.

PWS have taken large production steps in mastering the application of water-based paint systems and soon learned the value of reducing the amount of rework and rejections due to cleanliness before paint is applied. Working with a just intime manor the slightest delay in product has a disproportionate effect on performance and any improvement in this area is vital.

After speaking to Dean Grimbley of John Penny Woodworking Machinery and discussing the MB Anti Dust Cleaning machine, it was soon apparent there may be some benefits to this machine.

The ROBA Anti Dust can be a through feed or stand-alone solution which guarantees high productivity with best cleaning results. Most times the machine is placed directly in front of a finishing line or right after a sander.

Many companies have the problem of imbedded dirt and dust residues after lacquer application. It is difficult to remove these particles as they are sealed under the lacquer layer this means perfect cleaning of all parts is required before finishing.

PWS found their current machines didn’t solve the cleaning problem 100% due to several reasons: cross drums are only able to remove dust from the grooves in feed direction, leaving dust in the transversal grooves or at the shoulders of a shaker door panel. Wrong configurated brushes and small tool diameter don’t offer the capacity to collect large dust volumes.

The new ROBA Anti Dust line solves the

problem with the help of an additional cross unit, a double brush rotating clockwise and counter clockwise, a Noodle Blower at the machine exit, several Ionization Bars and extra-large brushes equipped with very effective Ostrich Feathers (shown in photo). This combination ensures that the whole part is completely cleaned, even in complicated details of the cabinet doors. Cleaned this way, the parts will pass the so called ‘Black T-Shirt Test’ and the machine is also deliverable with a bottom cleaning unit.

After testing back at the MB manufacturing facility in Herford Germany, PWS were suitably impressed to order the machine, with installation in early May 2023.

SAVE ENERGY REDUCE COSTS

In many manufacturing facilities, extraction fans operate continuously, at full power, throughout the working day.

Even when some machines are not in use, and often during factory breaks, the powerful, energy-consuming fans continue to run at full speed – wasting valuable energy... and money!

With ECOGATE, the extraction system responds in real-time to variations in machine use. When a production machine is switched on, the greenBOX Controller opens a motorised damper to provide extraction for that particular machine.

With ECOGATE technology installed, an extraction fan will consume the minimum power required to provide optimum extraction – reducing electricity bills by 68% on average. www.ecogate.co.uk

Starlight Bedrooms shines bright with HOMAG SAWTEQ B-200 beam saw

Located in Farnworth, Lancashire, Starlight Bedrooms is a family run business which was established more than 40 years ago. The foundation of the business is built on a strong reputation for quality, innovative design and great customer service.

“We’re proud of our reputation for premium quality bedroom furniture,” explains Rob Barrows-Langford, CEO at Starlight Bedrooms. He continues, “A key factor in our success has been our investment in state-of-the-art

machinery which ensures we maintain a really high-quality finish to all our products.

“The company’s latest machine acquisition is no exception. It replaces an aging beam saw which was almost 20 years old and starting to cause us production issues. The new saw had to fit in a tight space where the old saw used to be sited, and so the footprint of the replacement saw had to be compact.

our opinion they are the best brand out there. We simply called up Jon Lawman, our HOMAG area manager, and explained to him what we wanted the saw to do and the size parameters it had to meet. Jon then went away to consider the options and came back to us with recommendations.”

HOMAG SAWTEQ B-200 – power, precision and flexibility

“His pick of the SAWTEQ B-200 came as no surprise to us, but Jon also recommended we opted for the Power Concept in combination with intelliGuide Classic. At the heart of the Power Concept technology is a clamp that can be moved separately. Using this clamp, two panels with different cross cuts can be cut to length together; this feature can increase output up to 30 percent. With the Power Concept

Classic option, you automatically receive a wider version of the first air cushion table and the saw is equipped with another start-stop key on the second air cushion table.

“The innovative intelliGuide assistance system is a real benefit to the machine operator. With the help of LED light signals at the cutting line, it enables faster, more accurate workpiece throughput.

“The saw itself is an updated version of our previous model, so we knew exactly what we were getting. When Jon explained the benefits of the Power Concept and intelliGuide, I felt they were well worth the extra investment.”

A robust, reliable beam saw ”Brad, the installation engineer from HOMAG was absolutely brilliant. Once he had the SAWTEQ B-200 up and running he trained our staff. Because they were very familiar with the

previous saw, Brad was able to get them up to speed on the B-200 very quickly. A few icons had changed, but apart from that it was relatively easy.

“Since going live, the saw is probably saving us about an hour a day. It is totally reliable which is vitally important for our business. Without the saw in operation, our production comes to a standstill, something we simply can’t afford to happen.

“In terms of return on investment, it is already paying for itself on reliability alone. When you factor in the improved finish quality, accuracy and speed of the SAWTEQ B-200, the benefits are clear to see,” concludes Barrows-Langford. “Purchasing a wood waste heater is one of the best things our business has done.”

A Yorkshire garden building company has purchased a second wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on its operating costs.

Swallow GB Ltd supplies a range of products and services including the manufacture and installation of quality timber greenhouses. The business purchased a wood waste heater a couple of years ago to utilise the waste wood generated daily, to reduce expenditure on heating and waste disposal, and have recently purchased a second one.

Managing Director, Michael Bainbridge explains: “We were looking at purchasing a wood waste heater for a while, as we ended up with timber off-cuts as part of our manufacturing process which we had to pay to have removed. We realised that if we purchased a wood waste heater we could burn the waste wood to heat

the factory, especially our spray booth, and save money on waste removal and heating costs at the same time.”

The team at Swallow GB was recommended to speak to Wood Waste Technology by another local company, and following a site survey and quote, purchased a WT15.

Michael continues: “We’re delighted with our purchase and glad we bought the model we did from Wood Waste Technology. We’re now saving around £13-£14,000 a year on electric and waste disposal costs, so the first heater paid for itself in less than 12 months! It’s easy and convenient to use, in fact, it’s now just part of our daily routine and makes the factory a more comfortable place to work. Purchasing the wood waste heater is one of the best things our business has done – which is why we bought a second one!“

Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers.

In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications.

SCM expands its range of drilling machines with morbidelli cx110 and pwx500

The two new solutions for drilling are to be found at either end of the Italian Group’s wide range of products for this machining: morbidelli pwx500 for very high production standards per shift on medium-large batches and morbidelli cx110 for extremely flexible batch 1 machining.

Dreams drill happen: the dreams of furnishings and furniture component manufacturers are about to come true with a new generation of versatile drilling machines, offering high productivity and extreme precision which can even be integrated into automated systems.

SCM presents morbidelli cx110 and morbidelli pwx500 and is further expanding its drilling solutions to offer an innovative and highly specialised answer to both the needs of artisan businesses as well as those of large furniture industries.

The two new solutions are to be found at either end of the vast range of morbidelli drilling

Panel Processing 24
morbidelli cx110

machines: the cx110 is dedicated mainly to businesses that, irrespective of their sizes and production volumes, require a versatile compact solution, which is efficient and can handle all the flexible critical machining situations; morbidelli pwx500, on the other hand, is for large furniture manufacturers and contractors looking for high-speed, connected and integrated drilling solutions without sacrificing the quality of the finishing and precision.

As Bruno Di Napoli, SCM Business Unit Manager for machining centres and drilling solutions says: “Market demands waver between two extremes: high production standards per shift and extremely flexible batch 1 machining work. SCM’s new morbidelli drilling machines were created to interpret the client’s expectations by developing the ‘best machine’ without compromises for both the artisan and large furniture manufacturers. Nowadays, we can say

with even more certainty that we have a product range to suit every company requirement with new solutions which in both cases offer top performance at highly competitive prices”.

morbidelli cx110

The morbidelli cx110 drilling machine offers maximum flexibility in performing any kind of vertical and horizontal drilling work in less than 8 sq m.

The shaped clamp makes machining much easier because it drastically reduces the cases in which it is necessary to reposition the clamp, reducing the cycle times. Another advantage is the RO.AX spindles fitted on the borehole heads, with a rotation speed that can reach 8000 rpm, maintaining a very high finishing quality.

The operator can efficiently and simply deal with batch 1 drilling work as they will always have the necessary tools available and will

benefit from the advantages of an automatic tool change with 6 positions.

The accessibility and ease of loading and handling the pieces is another distinctive plus: the machine is also ideal for those who need to machine lacquered and delicate panels because the new work plan has been designed to avoid any kind of friction.

Drilling is done with extreme precision and the guarantee of always having the correct corresponding piece while the machine is operating, without the risk of slipping or bending. This happens thanks to a decimal 3D PROBE probing system with four sensors and a presser that guarantees maximum stability to the piece during machining. Stability that is guaranteed irrespective of the repositioning of the clamp and also in the most unusual and elaborate implementations: the slide bearings act as a continuous guide, providing considerable help to the operator and reducing possible errors with piece linearity.

This new drilling machine is extremely versatile: available in several configurations, it can also be fitted with a new unit to create “Clamex” joints.

‘The accessibility and ease of loading and handling the pieces is another distinctive plus: the machine is also ideal for those who need to machine lacquered and delicate panels because the new work plan has been designed to avoid any kind of friction.

morbidelli pwx500

The new morbidelli pwx500 is the ideal drilling solution for connected and integrated production and to achieve highly competitive production standards per shift on medium and large batches.

Production ability has increased by 10% compared to market standards. The drilling machine can machine intensely over several shifts and was designed to dramatically reduce changes to machine set-ups and other operations that result in down times.

High productivity is guaranteed even by the automatic repositioning system which is completed in under 45 seconds, including dowelling. Reliability is another significant advantage: the system has been designed to have fewer moving components compared to standard ones, so fewer risks of damage over time.

This new drilling machine is also synonymous of high efficiency: indeed, it is the only one on

the market to offer up to five rows of spindles on the right and left in order to reach the extremities of the panel to make structural holes according to different production needs.

Efficiency and high productivity combine with a considerable machining simplicity facilitated by the optimiser software that controls the entire machine’s set up, the drilling steps and integration of the production lines consisting of several machines.

The new morbidelli pwx500 is also extremely adaptable: the panel drilling occurs with a FLEX transport and positioning system

that automatically adapts to the piece’s specifications, with the possibility of positioning the panel in one or more positions along the Y axis.

Effectiveness is another key word: the panel is machined with 10 drilling units rapidly completing any furniture installation diagram thanks to the M-type heads and electro-spindle with tool change.

Lastly, the model can be highly customised: over 450 drilling tools can be fitted, six separate dowel insertion units, two workstations and different servo system levels.

The best tool position on the heads, depending on the client’s production batches, is identified by a powerful and innovative optimiser: Maestro powerset. This software satisfies a specific demand: facilitating and speeding up the setup operation of the tips on the machine and providing the plant with flexibility.

New Maestro 3Drill software

As well as two new machines, SCM has integrated a new drilling software, Maestro 3Drill, to also apply the main advantages of morbidelli numerically controlled programming software to drilling machines.

Some of the main advantages include the possibility of directly importing threedimensional solids with automatic recognition of the drilling work to be done. This speeds up and simplifies the user’s programming experience.

Trends are wide for belts

As wide belt trends continue to develop across the furniture and joinery sector, John Legg spoke with Ardi Ilter, business sector manager Wood, Mirka Ltd (Finland), to find out about the latest developments Mirka is seeing in the wide belt arena and how businesses are benefiting from them.

“In the furniture and joinery sector there has been a focus on fine sanding in recent years, which has seen a move away from coarser abrasives such as the P16, P24 and P36 grit that used to be a staple of the sanding process. There was then a move to businesses using P40, P50 and P60 grit for a time, however, we are now seeing businesses starting to sand from finer grits such as P80 and P100. This is due to woodworking machinery evolving and

continually improving, and, because the cost of wood has increased so much, no-one can afford to create wood-dust with P16/24/36.

Finer grits such as P150, P180 and P220 are becoming more prominent in the sanding process due to the types of panels and boards that are being employed including MDF, HDF, Chipboard and laminated boards. Due to their construction, there is less or no need for the coarser grits and hard sanding to achieve the result the customer is looking for.

There is also a focus on ensuring a consistent and high-quality finish. With new substrates and coating systems, very smooth surfaces are achieved, creating a risk for visible micro dentations that the end user wants to eradicate, so businesses are looking for alternative

‘There are also two distinct benefits a long-lasting product offers end users. The first is a cost saving on their abrasives spend. This is highlighted by our experienced technical experts, who have noticed that businesses are starting to realise that even if initially there may be a cost saving gained by purchasing a cheaper product, this will soon be outweighed by having to use additional products’

abrasives apart from paper, film and cloth that can do this. One option is “soft-touch” abrasives and like any good business, our R&D team is doing the work behind the scenes to ensure the customer has access to the products that meet Mirka’s high standards and the needs of the end user.

Sustainability is also key. This push comes in the form of the EU wanting sanding tools and abrasives to be long lasting. To address sustainability, Mirka is constantly investing in

Ardi Ilter 28 PANEL PROCESSING

R&D to ensure its customers, whether they are using wide belts or other abrasives from our product portfolio, have access to products that have a long lifespan and provide a consistent cut from the first use to the last.

Mirka’s vision over 15 years ago was to research and invest in sustainable technology, and, as a result, new products have been launched to meet the upcoming EU Green Deal as well as for belt sanding. This investment is here to stay and will lead to customers moving away from the ‘cheap’ abrasives, which are typically constructed from lesser quality raw materials and affect the quality of the finish and the time taken to complete a job.

There are also two distinct benefits a long-

lasting product offers end users. The first is a cost saving on their abrasives spend. This is highlighted by our experienced technical experts, who have noticed that businesses are starting to realise that even if initially there may be a cost saving gained by purchasing a cheaper product, this will soon be outweighed by having to use additional products. The second is efficiency. An example is a reduction in the downtime of the wide belt machines to change the belt, which may affect production output by a few per cent per day, which over a long period of time adds up. On top of the reduced downtime, there are monetary savings because the business using the wide belt machine is not having to spend significant money on electricity when it is not in use.

Another trend is wide belt machines are becoming wider. Through the years we have seen the growth from 910mm to1010mm to1350mm to1380mm to1400mm. But now, due to the wider use of boards and panels, 1400+mm machines are being requested by huge manufacturers and small businesses alike.

These trends are here to stay and Mirka will ensure it stays in step with them by constantly communicating with the end user to understand their needs and requirements. This information will then be collated and passed to the R&D team, which will help them develop innovative, durable products that stand the test of time.”

Starbank Panel Products invest in the latest HOMAG CENTATEQ E-700 airTec CNC

Founded in 1976 by Gordon and Kath Darbyshire, Starbank Panel Products has remained a family business ever since. Now run by son Philip, managing director, and daughter Wendy, financial director, Starbank manufactures bespoke decorative, architectural and commercial panel furniture products.

“As a company, our strategy is simple,” explains Phil Darbyshire. “Our focus is on working with customers as a supply only manufacturing partner. As such, we deliver outstanding products for the interior fit-out markets. Experience, quality craftsmanship and first-class customer service set us apart from the competition. This professional, yet passionate approach has enabled us to build a strong network of customer and supplier partnerships that stand the test of time.

Phil continues: “One of the most important lessons I learnt from my father was the need to invest in the very best woodworking machinery available. It is a philosophy we follow to this day

and it is why the majority of our plant list comes from HOMAG. From CNCs to edge banders and from sanding machines to postformers, HOMAG machines are the powerhouse of our operation.

“To stay ahead of the competition we constantly evaluate market trends and technological advances in woodworking machines. Our team recognised the increasing demand from our customers for a visually improved ‘zero joint’ edge finish. This was especially so on high end surface technology such as the super matt decors and white panels with white edging. This led us to look at a CNC that could handle shaped edging with a zero joint finish.

“Because each and every product we manufacture is bespoke, however, we also need to have flexibility. With these key drivers in mind, we sat down with our HOMAG area manager, Jon Lawman, and CNC specialist, Phil Pitchford to evaluate options.

“Both Jon and Phil are extremely knowledgeable and they have the ability to explain complex machine information in an easy to understand manner. Not only that, but they also understand our business and so we have total trust in their recommendations.

“After discussing the options, we made the decision to add the latest CENTATEQ E-700 CNC with the powerEdge Pro Duo unit to our growing portfolio of HOMAG CNCs.”

CENTATEQ E-700 CNC – High-performance edge banding on two processing tables

“The CENTATEQ E-700 with the new powerEdge Pro Duo unit is essentially two machines in one. It enables us to produce different workpieces on each table and we can select either airTec zero joint or hot-melt adhesive edge finishing.

“The powerEdge Pro Duo unit has made a big impact on our production capabilities. Not only does it enable us to produce zero joint edges, but we can also edge tighter radius corners with improved butt-joint finishing for 360 degree workpieces.

“The CENTATEQ E-700 is controlled via the latest version of HOMAG’s software, woodWOP 8.0. One of the benefits of the 8.0 version is an improved wizard which makes programming much faster. This is really important for us because we have tens of thousands of programs due to the bespoke nature of every panel we produce. To maximise the benefits of the new woodWOP software we have upgraded all our HOMAG machines to the new 8.0 version.”

Production benefits that lead to increased customer satisfaction

”When we introduce something new to the production process, the initial reaction can be one of indifference to say the least. After all, change can be challenging; it means our operators have to learn new ways and that takes time and effort. With the PowerEdge Duo unit, however, the operators have taken to it like a duck to water. They actually prefer to use the zero joint edging because it is less messy and they have fewer issues with it.

“From a company point of view, not only does it give us edging options, but the airTec zero joint edging is far more energy efficient. The airTec system only uses energy when the edging is in progress; with the hot-melt EVA glue we have to heat the glue pot all day to ensure it doesn’t go off.

“Most importantly, our customers are benefiting from having the option to choose zero joint edges on even the most challenging shaped parts. The speed and versatility of the CENTATEQ E-700 also means we can shorten lead times for complex items. We are that impressed with the technology that we have

introduced a new brand to the market to take advantage – ZEROedge®.”

HOMAG quality and service

“The partnership we have built with HOMAG UK has its foundations in the build quality, technical excellence and durability of its machinery. The company’s design engineers are constantly pushing the envelope to improve the technical capabilities of the equipment and software. That means we are able to invest in machinery that gives us a competitive edge.

“All this is backed up with great customer service and support. Everyone at HOMAG, both in Germany and the UK, has a friendly, professional approach and that makes dealing with them a pleasure. It also gives us tremendous peace of mind knowing we are partnering with the best in the world,” concludes Darbyshire.

Extremely Matt edgings from Ostermann

Extremely matt surfaces make an elegant impression and are currently popular in kitchen, bathroom and home furnishings. For a perfect impression even on the narrow surfaces of furniture boards, Ostermann offers a growing selection of edgings with an “Excellent Matt” surface finish.

As with high gloss surfaces, super matt and extremely matt edgings also require a very precise matching in terms of colour and gloss level. After all, board and edging are supposed to look as if they were made from a single piece.

To give furniture makers as much leeway as possible in their selection of possible colours, Ostermann offers matching edgings of the highest quality for all common matt surfaces, and sells them from small quantities of only 1m.

One example: Grey

The lustreless surface finish gives the otherwise admittedly rather unspectacular colour a very noble and exclusive appearance. Yet, grey and grey is not the same. There are, for example, almost 40 different shades of grey in the RAL classic colour scale.

The diversity of nuances is naturally also reflected in the available board surfaces, and thus in the Ostermann range. Depending on the gloss level of the board, Ostermann provides more than 40 different grey edgings with an excellent matt (gloss level smaller than three) or super matt (gloss level smaller than seven) surface finish.

New colours at Arpa Fenix

Ever since the booming success of the Fenix NTM Bloom Collection we can be sure: new colours from this collection set trends worldwide. You could not find any kitchen on the market in colours such as matt dark green, warm red or corn yellow until recently. Today, these colours represent exquisite Italian design and have found their way into many board collections. But Arpa Industriale is already one step ahead. Six new colours have just been introduced by the company, for which Ostermann once again has the perfectly matching edgings in stock. The edgings impress with an extremely matt surface and are available in standard dimensions of 23, 33, 43 and 100 by 1mm.

New colours with trend potential

Once again, the new Fenix colours are exceptional, and their extremely matt finish gives them their very own, elegant look. The same is true of the matching edgings, all of which have been sampled by Ostermann with an “Excellent Matt” finish. The Viola Orissa edging shows a dark purple hue, reminiscent of the intense colour of an aubergine. Just not glossy, but extremely matt. The second shade of red - Rosso Namib - is reminiscent of red sand, brick or clay, and endows furniture with a warm touch. The relatively neutral shade of the edging Giallo Evora can best be described as warm sand-coloured and can – according to the Ostermann experts’ recommendation - be perfectly combined with one of the two previously mentioned shades.

Blue, Green, Grey – familiar yet new

The three other new Ostermann edgings Blu Shaba, Verde Kitami and Grigio Aragona cover the blue-green and grey colour spectrum. They all have in common a muted appearance with striking grey elements. Blu Shaba is a very calm and dark shade of blue that tends towards grey and also has greenish components. The green of Verde Kitami is much lighter, very neutral, and less luminous than that of the Verde Brac edging, which has been on the market for a while.

An ideal companion for the two edgings – according to the unanimous opinion of

‘The lustreless surface finish gives the otherwise admittedly rather unspectacular colour a very noble and exclusive appearance. Yet, grey and grey is not the same. There are, for example, almost 40 different shades of grey in the RAL classic colour scale’

Ostermann experts – is the last of the six new colours: Grigio Aragona. The shade ranges between grey and brown and is reminiscent of the mineral mud used for health applications.

A tip from the Ostermann experts

All Ostermann edgings with an “Excellent Matt” surface are shipped with a protective film. To easily remove these from the edgings, use the REDOCOL protective film remover, a useful little tool from the Ostermann range. It has a soft, rubberised layer on the underside, which quickly detaches the film and facilitates its removal.

Another tip: fronts made to measure

In addition to the perfectly matching edgings, the new Fenix surfaces are of course also available from Ostermann as, e.g., ready-made furniture elements. You can design and order them online in the Ostermann configuration tool.

How do I find the right edging?

Ostermann stands for a particularly diverse range and the best service for the trade. Finding an edging for a board is quite an easy task, because the experts in edging have already referenced perfectly matching edgings to all furniture boards in their online shop.

If you type in the board number or board name into the search field at the starting page, you will automatically be shown the complete name of the board and below it the Ostermann recommendation for matching edgings.

If you need other than standard dimensions, the edging specialist will cut the edgings to any desired width. You can also obtain any edging with a hotmelt adhesive coating or with an individually chosen functional layer for zero bondline technologies. The highly trained staff is happy to help with questions on the right choice or processing.

Furniture makers will also find all information on these edgings by typing in the search term “#Highlights04” on the Ostermann website www. ostermann.eu.

Create the best bonds with Henkel

Kenyon’s are the Henkel Premium Partners for furniture and building component adhesives. These markets are supplied under the industry leading brand names Technomelt and Aquence, which are recognised for quality and proven performance – just ask anyone using Henkel. Kenyon Group’s Steve Morrow offers his insight.

Micro Emissions (ME) PUR adhesives – no warning labels, it’s time to change Industry-wide changes to using PUR adhesives are just around the corner. The legislation according to REACH regarding the handling of diisocyanates will change on 24th August 2023. Henkel ME PUR adhesives contain less than 0.1% monomeric diisocyanate, which therefore reduces the hazardous isocyanate-containing vapours by up to 90%

Technomelt Micro Emissions (ME) PUR adhesives have no hazardous labels and do not require a specific professional training for operators which will be required when the legislation changes for standard PUR adhesives. Technomelt (ME) PUR adhesives offer easy and safe handling in production. Nobody likes warning labels and the fact that we can now eliminate this has huge benefits.

Mindful of health and safety, companies are now asking, what options are available with the PUR adhesives that would allow them to improve their operating procedures whilst at the same time reducing risk. The solution is simple – Henkel Technomelt Micro Emissions (ME) PUR adhesives. These adhesives offer the same performance benefits that come with PUR technologies, low coat weight, tight joints, invisible glue lines, exceptional high performance combined with excellent heat and water resistance but without the hazardous labelling, making it more environmentally friendly and safer for operators to handle.

‘Our expertise and knowledge has been gained over the years by offering a comprehensive range of market leading adhesives technologies, UK stock holding and delivery when the customer needs it’

We have your application glued and the environmental impact reduced! So why not improve your microclimate at the same time as improving your production by changing to Technomelt Micro Emission (ME) PUR adhesives.

Edgebanding bridging the gap between EVA and PUR

It’s universally accepted that EVA-based adhesives are the easiest of all to use and process. EVA-based adhesives are still as popular as ever and Henkel offer a full range from filled to unfilled to suit every application. However, EVA’s come with disadvantages if the end product is likely to be subjected to steam, heat or moisture.

An alternative to EVA is PUR adhesives, which dominate the edgebanding market. Over the years PUR adhesives have been more accessible to customers who are edging and as technologies advance, PUR adhesives’ outstanding performance has become available to all edging customers delivering the finished goods to the highest standards. If joints need exceptional water or heat resistance, then PUR adhesives are recommended as they have a significantly superior performance versus an EVA adhesive.

On the flip side, PUR adhesives need more

attention during processing, such as flushing the systems and cleaning

Henkel Technomelt KS 922 Polyolefin based hot melt adhesive bridges the gap between EVA and PUR, by offering higher heat resistance and higher performance than an EVA with similar pricing levels.

Technomelt KS 922 offers benefits of ultra-thin glue lines for superior edge aesthetics on all board types and colours and is a clean running adhesive with no stringing which leads to less down time for maintenance and cleaning. This in turn leads to increased production. Technomelt KS 922 can reduce your glue usage by up to 20% as polyolefin-based adhesives have increased performance and therefore the coat weight per linear metre can be reduced. This can lead to cost savings.

Edgebanding Holz-Her cartridges

As new products come onto the market, one adhesive range has remained unchanged, standing the test of time and for good reasons. Offering both EVA (filled and unfilled), PUR and PUR Micro Emission technologies, Henkel’s Technomelt DORUS HKP range of hot melt adhesive cartridges provides exceptional gluing performance and an easy-to-use option for HolzHer edge banders.

44 EDGEBANDING
Micro Emissions (ME) PUR adhesives – no warning labels, it’s time to change! Filled or unfilled, that is the question …

With more and more companies choosing PURHM adhesives for the many performance benefits they provide, Technomelt DORUS HKP27 PUR has quickly become a key choice for Holz-Her edge banders, making it the go-to adhesive for kitchen, door, cubicle and bathroom furniture manufacture, allowing a high degree of moisture and heat resistance to be achieved.

Technomelt Dorus HKP27 PUR also provides many additional benefits such as cold flexibility resistance, high initial strength and very tight joints, which can achieve invisible glue lines.

Further advancements in adhesive technology has seen the launch of Technomelt Dorus HKP 29 Micro Emission PUR adhesive, Be kinder to the environment with Micro Emission adhesive, the future for our customers and the planet.

Where high moisture or heat resistance is not required, for example bedroom furniture, EVA adhesives are the ideal choice for companies. The Technomelt Dorus HKP range has an exceptional offering with Technomelt Dorus HKP20 and Technomelt Dorus HKP25 –between these two all the bases are covered, helping achieve the production line finishes that are expected in today’s competitive markets.

Edgebanding with proven PUR adhesives

There’s edgebanding adhesives, and then there is Henkel edgebanding adhesives – it’s really that simple!

Henkel offer an exceptional range of PUR adhesives supplied in Cartridges, Granules, 2Kg blocks, 20Kg drums and 170Kg drums for all known edgebanding machines and applications, and they are also available in ME (Micro Emissions).

The tried and tested market-leading Technomelt 270-7 has a proven winning bacKground and probably the most versatile grade on the market offering exceptional high performance.

However, it’s not just the adhesive that makes Henkel PUR adhesives the market leader, it’s the technical and onsite support offered by both Henkel and Kenyon’s that separates us from the rest of the field. We don’t just sell adhesives; we live them and this includes supporting you!

Filled or unfilled, that is the question … Are you using an EVA adhesive on your edgebander? Are you happy with the bond and finish you’re getting? So how do you know if you are you using the right EVA adhesive?

Technomelt KS 220/1 and Technomelt KS 611 are both filled EVA edgebanding hot melt adhesives, which are easy to apply and offer exceptional performance with a very high final bond strength.

Being filled EVA’s they offer the advantage of preventing stringing, whilst at the same time offering higher viscosity, which can be beneficial when applying to porous substrates such as chipboard.

In the unfilled hot melt adhesive category there is Technomelt Dorus KS 351. This can be applied at lower coat-weights, thereby minimising the glue line and achieving tighter joints, whilst offering high glue mileage and high final bond strength.

Henkel offer a collection of EVA adhesives which range from filled to unfilled, and everything else in between, to suit every application, supplying many of the well-known UK and European furniture manufacturers.

Kenyon’s have been supplying adhesives since 1979 covering all aspects of manufacturing and assembly predominately in the furniture manufacturing and related markets. Our expertise and knowledge has been gained over the years by offering a comprehensive range of market leading adhesives technologies, UK stock holding and delivery when the customer needs it.

The secrets of flat lamination

Flat lamination of panels and boards is commonly used in the construction and furniture industry. The surface-laminated panels are used in a wide range of areas, such as door, furniture components, floors, ceiling panels, but also as kitchen fronts, wall panelling among others.

Designers and architects are constantly working on innovative trends and products, which has led to an endless range of decors, colours and surface solutions. These often pose special challenges for the manufacturing companies. High gloss or super matt surfaces, for example, are very demanding to produce and require expert knowledge in terms of lamination and sheathing of panels and boards.

Know-how is the key to success

TAKA has many years of experience in the field of profile and flat lamination and employs a team of specialists who are available to advise our customers on all questions and projects. In this way we ensure that, thanks to its adhesives, our customers can manufacture high-quality and competitive products that meet the highest demands. Our specially founded Academy offers special training courses about flat lamination, aimed at machine operators as well as production managers.

The process of flat lamination

In flat lamination and panel wrapping, hot melt adhesives are usually used to bond the decorative films over the entire surface. This is usually done on industrial panel laminating machines, which apply the adhesive to the decorative material either by means of a slot nozzle or by roller application to the panel to

be laminated. Depending on the production process, different working parameters must be observed to achieve the best possible results. In general, when there are above-average demands on the quality of the bond, PUR hotmelt adhesives are used, as they have the highest resistance to heat, moisture and chemical substances of all hotmelt adhesives.

Roller application in flat lamination is still the most widespread application method. The PUR adhesive is melted and then applied to the panel using a rotating application roller. The disadvantages of the roller application process are the imprecise adhesive application and the high cleaning costs of the system.

Slot nozzle application is still the most technically advanced solution for flat lamination. It is characterised by economical adhesive

consumption and maximum precision in the adhesive pattern, which means that even demanding surfaces such as high-gloss and matt finishes can be produced in reliable processes. Similarly, slot nozzle application offers maximum flexibility in the application width of the adhesive and enables the panel edges to be wrapped (postforming) in the same process step.

Sustainability of TAKA PUR adhesives

TAKA optimises its in-house production processes with efficiency but also sustainability in mind. PUR adhesives for roll coater and slot nozzle are manufactured on the most modern production facilities, which are powered by electricity from 100% renewable energy sources. They work with closed water systems so that no fresh or drinking water must be fed in and rely on certified waste prevention and disposal solutions.

Five top tips for choosing the right adhesive in sofa manufacturing

For most of us, a new sofa represents a high value purchase that we expect to last for many years, if not decades and sofa manufacturers are often faced with the challenge of combining aesthetics with durability, as well as value for money and adhesive choice is a key factor in achieving this.

Choosing the right adhesives can help streamline sofa production and deliver products with greater customer appeal, enhancing competitive advantage and generating financial benefits. Chemique Adhesives, a leading manufacturer and supplier of adhesives and application equipment, offers five top tips for choosing the right adhesive:

1. Use one or two-component soft bond line adhesives for foam

Most sofa cushions are made of foam and the best option for bonding foam components is to use a one ortwo component soft bond line adhesive. Soft bond line adhesives mean that the characteristic feel and resilience of the foam will be maintained, helping to make the sofa comfortable and appealing.

2. Choose PVA adhesives for frame assembly

PVA adhesive is ideal for frame assembly, providing a strong and reliable bond. Available in a variety of viscosities, PVA adhesive is the ideal choice for timber work, as it is easy to apply and offers excellent creep resistance.

3. For bonding fabric to foam, water-based is the ideal choice

Water-based adhesives are perfect for bonding fabric to foam as they are the ideal solution for holding substrates in place and establish a strong bond, even under high tension. These adhesives do not release any VOCs (volatile organic compounds), provide instant grab and are ideal for all foam types / densities, making them a popular choice in the foam and furniture industry.

4. For bonding foam to frames, think hot melt! Hot melt adhesives are an excellent choice for bonding foam to frames and being fast-curing, they help to maximise productivity. An important advantage of hot melts is that when compared with staples, they eliminate the dimpling effect and provide a fuller, more comfortable looking sofa with enhanced customer appeal.

5. Hot melt adhesives are ideal for packaging

Hotmelt adhesives are ideal for use on corrugated cardboard boxes that are used to pack finished sofas ready for despatch. They are much more convenient and easier to work with than unsightly sticky tape and allow for a neater looking finished package.

Quickfit TL5 dowels combine versatility with performance

Metal Jacket’ dowels

The innovative Quickfit TL5

Titus, provide strong, reliable joints in all types of wooden materials, including MDF, chipboard and solid wood. This means that it is no longer necessary to use different dowels for different materials, or to reinforce joints by adding supplementary wooden dowels.

In addition, the new dowels – which are part of the Titus ‘Engineered for Your Kitchen’ programme – offer fast, tool-free insertion, reducing assembly time by up to 50% for homeassembled furniture. Alternatively, for maximum efficiency in volume production applications, they can be inserted automatically using Titus FastFit machines.

Quickfit TL5 dowels, which are used in conjunction with Titus Cam5000 cams, incorporate an expanding steel sleeve that provides high resistance to torsion and pull out. This ensures rigid furniture construction, with complete freedom from the tendency for joints to loosen over time. Furniture using the dowels can also be disassembled and reassembled repeatedly without compromising joint integrity.

The dowels are designed for insertion into a 5mm hole and, on insertion, they positively and reliably engage with the hole, greatly simplifying subsequent assembly steps. When edge inserted, the dowels immediately engage with the cam and remain securely positioned until the cam is tightened.

A further key feature is that the special design of the dowel head adopted for these innovative and time-saving products means that the performance of Quickfit TL5 dowels is unaffected by edge-to-hole-centre (ETHC) tolerances of up to ±1mm. Therefore, they easily accommodate not only drilling inconsistencies, but also the natural movement of wooden panels.

The dowels can be supplied in versions to suit ETHC dimensions of 24 and 34mm. The required hole diameter for the face board is 5mm, and for the edge board 8mm. The minimum hole depth in the face board is 12.5mm.

Grass to pursue the ‘road less travelled’

This year sees GRASS entering new sales channels: so instead of participating at interzum for example, the specialist in motion systems will focus on more targeted ways to reach its customers, and use the new customer centre in Hohenems for acquisitions and presentations.

GRASS stresses that the company is not broadly declining to appear at trade fairs, rather that it wishes to take the road less travelled and try new things when it comes to sales.

In autumn 2021, GRASS opened its new headquarters in Hohenems, Austria. This is the largest investment in the company’s history and in-cludes not only a state-of-the-art logistics centre with new administration facilities, but also an Experience Centre that showcases modern motion design over two floors and more than 500 square metres.

“For us, this development is an enormous step forwards,” says Andreas Marosch, Head of Marketing and Communications at GRASS. “By taking this step, we have created a location where we can present our products in their very best light.” Taking all of this into account, GRASS has decided not to participate in Cologne’s interzum trade fair in 2023. Instead, the com-pany’s goal is “to test new formats, to try out alternative sales channels, to make the best use of the customer centre; in short, to be as innova-tive when it comes to customer relations as GRASS is with its product development,” says Andreas Marosch.

GRASS wants to emphasise that not appearing at this year’s interzum is not a statement against the trade fair format or the leading Cologne trade fair itself. It is rather about trying new things and making bold decisions to establish the sales channels and customer points of contact that are the most effective for the company. “Two factors came together for this to happen: During

the Coronavirus pandemic, we saw that we were also able get in touch with our customers and prospective customers outside of the short trade fair period – and that we were often able to get deeper into conversation with them,” explains Andreas Marosch. “The second thing, of course, was the Experience Center. If we have such a state-of-the-art, visually appealing place to give presentations, why not use it?”

2023 is therefore going to be a year in which GRASS will break new ground in sales - something that is underlined even further by the fact that Ralf Priefer, a new sales manager for Germany and France, has recently come on board. As for what the company will do in years to come, is it likely that it will return to the classic trade fair format?

“We will decide in good time, once we have been able to draw the first conclusions from the new channels we’ve explored,” says Andreas Marosch.

Kündig’s news includes the launch of the all-new Master

Kündig used the Ligna show in Germany as a platform to unveil the all-new Kündig Master which sports new livery, has the latest Sigmatek touchscreen industrial controller and now has a very generous working height of 200mm.

This all-new machine supersedes the original Master and integrates many of the features associated with the higher-level machines. The original Kündig Master proved very popular and was one of Kündig’s best-selling machines, especially in the UK where several fire door manufacturers use them for calibrating followed by veneer sanding.

The new Kündig Perfect was also on display showing the advantages of oblique sanding against traditional style sanding machines along with examples from Kündig’s Technic series which are bespoke ‘made to measure’ sanding solutions and clearly demonstrate the vast amount of experience and ‘know how’ when it comes to individual sanding requirements.

In further news, Matthew Staley has joined Kündig and will be responsible for the service, installation and maintenance of all Kündig machines throughout the UK and Ireland. Matthew is already very

experienced with Kündig machines and will also carry out the installation of new machines in other countries when required. He has already spent several weeks at the Kündig Switzerland and Kündig Germany manufacturing sites building machines as part of Kündig’s ongoing training and development program.

Kündig UK have also just moved to a new modern headquarters where there will be several machines on display from both the wide belt and edge sander series which will be available for demonstration. The new headquarters will also be the main administration hub for the UK and Irelands sales, technical requirements, spare parts and where abrasives will be kept to support all Kündig machines.

Design features incorporated into the high-capacity Combi-CB70E such as its large super-elastic tyres and compact wheelbase make it ideally suited for the operational demands of the timber industry. With a 7,000kg/15,500lb lift

‘Design features incorporated into the highcapacity Combi-CB70E such as its large super-elastic tyres and compact wheelbase make it ideally suited for the operational demands of the timber

capacity, this model benefits from an impressively small footprint as well as exceptional manoeuvrability meaning that it can easily move bulky loads of timber around in confined spaces.

Occupational health and safety requirements mean that the welfare of the workforce has

become ever more important over the years. Drivers of industrial vehicles, who are often required to spend extensive periods in their workstations, quite rightly expect the highest levels of comfort and safety. Combilift’s designers have therefore gone to great lengths to ensure that the latest generation

of models are kitted out with top quality components that ensure sophisticated ergonomics for a stress-free in-cab environment. Features in the spacious cab include generous glazing for excellent allround visibility, the tilting steering column, hydraulic steering and the Grammer MSG65 seat.

What sets the Combi-CB70E apart from other forklifts is its gas strut suspension cab, which uses components such as those found in large scale industrial machinery with cab suspension. Combined with the super-elastic tyres this guarantees the smoothest of rides over uneven or less than perfect ground conditions such as those typically experienced in lumber yards.

Combilift’s newly developed Auto

Swivel Seat was also premiered at the Ligna show. This optional feature automatically engages and swivels the seat and armrest 15° to the right or left to accord with the direction of travel selected by the operator - reducing driver strain, particularly when travelling in reverse. (Patent Pending Application No. 2305983.5)

The truck also features Combilift’s internationally patented and Red Dot awarded independent electric traction which provides all front and rear drive wheels with 100% traction control. This negates the need for differential lock on slippery surfaces and significantly reduces long load momentum twisting when travelling sideways. Each electric drive incorporates parking and

regenerative dynamic braking for power efficiency. Roll-out access for major electrical components also simplifies maintenance tasks. This mix of next-gen performance, extensive battery life and exceptional ergonomics combined with all the advantages of the Combi-CB range, makes this the most powerful compact electric multi-directional forklift to date.

Combilift CEO and Co-Founder Martin McVicar said: “The increased capacities that we are offering in

our electric range will answer the demand for ever more powerful products which at the same time help companies to achieve their aims for more sustainable operations. We chose Ligna as the platform for launching the CombiCB70E due to its innate suitability for customers in the timber sector, but we are confident that this model will be a popular addition to our portfolio for many other industry applications.”

Are you in the risk zone of being exposed to high level of wood dust?

People exposed to wood dust regularly run the risk of developing several major health issues.

First, it can lead to asthma, which is four times more common in woodworkers than in any other UK workers. In particular, hardwood dust can cause cancer, especially in the nose. The settled dust that contains tiny particles is particularly dangerous to the lungs, it may also lead to specific skin conditions. Additionally, combustible wood dust can catch fire or explode. Each year, wood dust fires, which typically originate in dust extraction equipment, cause severe damage to or demolition of structures and equipment.

What operations cause high wood dust exposures?

When performed daily for long periods, the following woodwork is especially known for producing high levels of dust exposure:

• Sawing, routing, or turning operations on wood.

• Sanding, either by hand or by machine.

• Blowing dust from furniture that is being worked on using compressed air.

• Machined or sanded component assembly by hand.

• Operations involving cutting or treating composite boards, such as MDF.

• Sweeping up wood dust from floors or thorough dust removal.

Due to the potential health risks associated with wood dust, employees must be protected from it according to the Control of Substances

Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations of 2002. Therefore, no Workplace Exposure limit (WEL) should ever be exceeded. The WEL for hardwood and softwood dust is 5 mg/m3. These are the restrictions put in place on the acceptable levels of dust in the air, averaged during an ordinary 8-hour workday.

Reasons why furniture and joinery firms should use ducting systems

Exposure to wood dust is a common occupational hazard that requires effective management to protect workers’ health. To manage exposure, several measures should be implemented. COSHH requires woodworkers to conduct an adequate and appropriate risk assessment in every area of the workplace. They must also take action to prevent or

appropriately manage exposure to wood dust and provide the necessary safety gear. Local exhaust ventilation systems should be installed to capture and remove wood dust at its source. Regular cleaning and maintenance of work areas are crucial to minimize dust accumulation.

A ducting system plays a crucial role in effectively eliminating wood dust and promoting a safe working environment. By utilising a well-designed ventilation system, wood dust can be captured and removed at the source of generation.

The ducting system consists of a network of pipes and vents strategically placed throughout the workspace. Local exhaust ventilation, such as hoods or enclosures, should be positioned close to woodworking machines to capture airborne particles. The captured dust is then transported through the ducts to a central dust collection unit, where it is filtered and collected. With its easy-to-install clip-together ducting system, Nordfab Quick-Fit, has been a preferred solution for furniture joineries for the past 50 years. Nordfab Quick-Fit offers solutions, specially tailored towards the wood industry with its extraction hoods – to remove wood dust from the workplace, and drop out box – to stop large wood chips in the airstream.

Is this the Holy Grail for a wood-burner within the woodworking industry?

Many have tried, and many have failed. Is the Organic Rankine Cycle the answer to producing electricity from wood-waste? Chris Franklin MD at Ranheat Engineering, a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipmentcontinues his series of articles exclusively for Furniture & Joinery Production. In this issue Chris looks at the possibility of producing electricity using your wood-waste.

So, what is the ORC I hear you say? Well, it is the Organic Rankine Cycle. Still none the wiser? The basic theory is that using a conventional biomass boiler with relatively low water temperatures (85-110°C) the hot water passes through a turbine that produces the electricity the water is then cooled via a heat exchanger and then returned back to the boiler for re-heating. I would point out that Ranheat do not make such a generator but are looking at projects with several manufacturers that do. Ranheat continue to be at the forefront of industrial wood fired systems but believe the construction and design of the ORC systems remains a very specialised process. The key seems to be the design and manufacture of the turbine.

Key points given by ORC technology providers are:

• High efficiency even with low temperature heat sources

• Reduced ownership running costs due to free fuel and low maintenance costs

• Reliable and compact

Historically to generate electricity you needed to make high pressure steam and then pass it through a steam turbine. Generally, systems needed to be on a large scale as the amount of electricity was relatively small (20%) and a lot

of waste heat was produced. This led to CHP plants (combined heat and power) these worked well if say attached to a district heating scheme that could use the waste heat. So not ideal for the UK where district heating is not common.

Manufacturers of the ORC systems claim to have small systems available from 10kW to 180kW able to work with hot water from 80120°C. Boilers in this temperature range need to be made to the new UKCA mark as the CE mark is being replaced in the UK following BREXIT –up until the end of 2024 the CE mark will still be accepted.

The success of an installation seems to require large water contents within the boiler, Ranheat systems have always had large water content boilers. This was to protect installations from

power cuts. Ranheat systems incorporate separate combustion systems and boilers.

The combustion systems contain large amounts of refractory, necessary to reduce emissions of Carbon monoxide and other flue gas analytes.

The boilers are to a classic ‘horse shoe’ design with the open bottomed boiler sitting on top of the combustion system built into a boiler foundation which is lined with a combination of fire bricks and refractory cement.

Following discussions with local authorities the generation of electricity is seen as a good use of wood-waste particularly in the summer when heating for the factory is not required.

The combustion process will need to be permitted by the local authority and the type of permit required will be dependent on the mass of wood-waste the plant is capable of burning.

Plants up to 90kg per hour will need a part B permit for a SWIP (small waste incineration plant) plants over 90kg/hr but less than 220kg/hr will need a part B permit under PGN 602.

Plants over this size and up to 3000kg per hour will come under the jurisdiction of the Environment agency and all sizes will come under the MCPD (medium combustion plant directive)

Ranheat continue to investigate these smallscale electrical generators. In theory they appear to be a good ‘bolt on’ to many of the existing Ranheat installations around the UK.

Business Sentiment Index – cautious return to confidence for SMEs

Close Brothers Asset Finance’s Business Sentiment Index (BSI), which measures SME business confidence, has risen for the first time since September 2021 following three consecutive falls, and a low at the end of 2022. These were caused, in the main, by rising inflation, energy cost increases and higher interest rates.

Despite the headwinds still being faced by small and medium-sized firms and inflation stubbornly remaining in double digits, wholesale energy prices have fallen from their summer 2022 peaks, and there appears to be more certainty about where interest rates rises are headed, all of which is helping firms plan with more assurance.

This change in confidence is better understood when looking more closely at businesses’ priorities, which are achieving growth (28%) and managing costs (26%), well ahead of issues like paying down debts (9%) and business consolidation (9%).

Appetite for investment

Overall, the appetite to invest remains strong, as it was at the end of 2022, with three quarters of UK firms looking to seek funding for investment in the next 12 months, up from 67% in July 2022. This is reflected across all key sectors, with the most notable rise coming in Transport & Haulage, where the number of firms planning to seek funding has risen by 9% to 81% (from 72%),

while Manufacturing & Engineering remained very strong at 83%.

Missed opportunities

The number of companies that have missed business opportunities because of a lack of available funding fell from 51% at the end of 2022 to 45% in May 2023.

While this is an improvement, these are historically ‘high’ figures – for example, in May 2022, 37% of respondents answered ‘yes’ to the question ‘have you missed a business opportunity in the last 12 months, due to lack of available finance?’It would appear businesses are concerned about impacting their cashflow by dipping into their reserves or taking out a standard loan and adding to their debt burden.

Economic outlook

Businesses continue to be more negative than positive about the macro-economic outlook but the gap between positive and negative sentiment narrowed significantly since the start of 2023.

That being said, this indicator has contributed most to the decline in the overall BSI; for example, in November 2021 75% of respondents were positive about the economy – by December 2022 this had fallen to just 37%.

Predicted business performance

Predictions about future business performance

remained stable, with the majority expecting their prospects to remain unchanged. Overall, fewer firms predict they will contract than earlier in the year (10% against 15%).

Score calculation

The BSI is based on the views of 900 business owners and senior members of the UK’s business community and calculated from data charting their:

• Appetite for investment in their business in the coming 12 months

• Access to finance and whether they’ve missed a business opportunity through lack of available finance

• Views about the UK’s economic outlook

• Thoughts on their likely performance in the coming 12 months

Meeting legal requirements and improving safety: the benefits of operator training in the woodworking Industry

Any employer operating woodworking machinery has a legal and moral obligation to ensure the safety of operators. One of the most effective ways to do this is by investing in appropriate operator training.

Not only is operator training a legal requirement set out by the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE), but it also has numerous benefits for your business, including improving safety, quality, and reputation. In this article, we’ll explore operator training in the UK woodworking industry and the importance of choosing a reputable training provider such as Daltons Wadkin.

Legal requirements

Regulation 9 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (1) Every employer shall ensure that all persons who use work equipment have received adequate training for purposes of health and safety, including training in the methods which may be adopted when using the work equipment, any risks which such use may entail and precautions to be taken.

The HSE provides guidelines on the minimum

level of training required for different types of machinery and processes, and failure to comply with these guidelines can result in fines, legal action, and workplace accidents. By investing in operator training, you can ensure that your employees are trained to the required standard and that your business is compliant with UK law.

Safety benefits

The primary benefit of operator training is improved safety in the workplace. Trained operators are better equipped to identify and avoid hazards in the workplace, reducing the risk of accidents and injuries. They also have a better understanding of how to use machinery and tools correctly, which can help to prevent equipment damage and breakdowns.

In addition, trained operators are more likely to follow safe working practices, such as wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and carrying out regular maintenance checks. This not only reduces the risk of accidents but also promotes a safety culture within your business.

Quality benefits

Investing in operator training can also improve the quality of your woodworking products and processes. Trained operators are more efficient and accurate in their work, resulting in better quality products and more efficient processes. They are also better able to troubleshoot problems and identify opportunities for process improvements, which can lead to cost savings and increased productivity.

Reputation benefits

Using a reputable training provider like Daltons Wadkin can also help to improve your business’s

reputation. By investing in high-quality training for your employees, you demonstrate a commitment to safety and quality, which can help to increase customer confidence in your products and services. This can lead to repeat business, positive reviews, and increased profitability.

Why choose Daltons Wadkin?

Daltons Wadkin have over 122 years experience in the woodworking industry. As a PIABC Quality Assured training provider, the company offers a range of certificated courses for all makes and models of woodworking machinery including hand operated power tools and abrasive wheels. Conclusion

Investing in operator training is a smart decision for any employer operating industrial woodworking machinery. Not only is it a legal requirement, but it also has numerous benefits for your business, including improving safety, quality, and reputation. By choosing a reputable training provider like Daltons Wadkin, you can ensure that your employees are trained to the highest standard and that your business is compliant with UK law.

Edward Tadros honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award

Edward Tadros – long-time chairman of British manufacturer Ercol – has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by The Furniture Makers’ Company, the City of London livery company and charity for the furnishing industry, recognising his 50-year career.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented annually to a leader who has devoted their life to the furtherment of the furnishing industry and left an indelible mark on the trade.

After studying furniture design at Kingston, Edward joined the family furniture company, Ercol Furniture, in High Wycombe in 1973.

Edward was appointed a director of Ercol in 1986 and then chairman in 1994, a position he held until July 2022, when his son, Henry, succeeded him. Today, Ercol remains a private and family owned and managed company.

A staunch supporter of The Furniture Makers’ Company, Edward joined the livery as a freeman in May 1979 and was elected to the Court (board) in 1990. In 2005, he became the fourth member of his family to be Master of the Company. Edward is also a former chairman of the board of directors of the Furnishing Trades Benevolent Association (FTBA) and was in post at the time of the merger of the FTBA and the Furniture Makers’ Charitable Fund in 2012. He went on to be chairman of the trustees of The Furniture Makers’ Company for 12 years.

Edward was presented the award by Alderman Alison Gowman, who was representing the Rt Hon The Lord Mayor Nicholas Lyons, and Amanda Waring, Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company, at the latter’s Installation Dinner at the Mansion House, London in May. Edward collected the award to rapturous

applause from the near 180 people who attended the dinner, including Edward’s wife, Tamsen; sons William and Henry; daughter Bea, their partners and the directors of Ercol.

Amanda Waring, Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company, said: “Edward joined Ercol in 1973, working his way up from the factory floor to managing director, until he succeeded his uncle Lucian Ercolani as chairman. Edward was a careful and caring guardian of the family business, overseeing the legendary move to a new factory at Princes Risborough in 2002, until he stepped aside in 2022.

“Throughout his career he has been a champion of furniture makers, designers, makers and apprentices and always maintained close links with local schools, colleges and universities to inspire people to join the industry

and value craft.

“Edward is widely known as a kind, warm and unassuming man whose commitment to our industry, livery and charity has been outstanding and we are proud to recognise this by presenting a Lifetime Achievement Award to him.”

On receiving the award, Edward said: “I am delighted and privileged to be receiving this Lifetime Achievement Award. Over 50 years in the business and the industry, you often wonder if you are doing the right things, so it is very rewarding and reassuring to be recognised by one’s peers. Of course, awards like this are not achieved on one’s own. It is the huge support of all the people around me, family, and colleagues, that has been so valuable and helped me make my contribution to the industry and to my company, Ercol.”

Jessica Alexander raises £1.6k for industry charity

Jessica Alexander, outgoing executive director of the National Bed Federation, has raised over £1.6k for industry charity The Furniture Makers’ Company by hiking the Harrogate Ringway.

Jessica walked the popular 20-mile circuit which surrounds her hometown of Harrogate on Saturday 29 April. The length of the hike, which is classified as strenuous, was more than double Jessica’s normal daily walking distance. Supported along the way by friends, Jessica set off on her walk at 9am and crossed the finish line at 7pm.

Jessica had set herself the target of raising £1000 for the charity, but at last count, she had raised £1604 (including gift aid).

Jessica said: “I’m delighted to have completed my hike round Harrogate in one piece, thanks to the support and companionship of many

friends. After 10 hours, 50,000 steps and the equivalent of 54 floors climbed, I was beginning to flag – but knowing I exceeded my fundraising target by over 50% makes the pain well worth the gain! There’s still time to donate on my Just Giving page.”

Amanda Waring, Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company, said: “Huge congratulations to Jessica for completing this challenge and surpassing her target by raising over £1600 for our charity – what a fantastic achievement. Our charity has been supporting the welfare of people who work or have worked in the furniture and furnishing industry for 120 years. We are ever so grateful to any company or individual who assists us by raising vital funds for our cause.”

You can still support Jessica by donating through her JustGiving page.
