The team has just returned from the inaugural Materials & Finishes Show, envigorated by our conversations with our colleagues, readership and new faces alike. It was such a pleasure to see this leading show return to the NEC’s halls with a new direction, well-attended and with a dynamic selection of exhibitors. Congratulations go to the Montgomery team on their hard work and dedication.

Thank you to all those who took the time to come and see us on our stand, or who took part in the engaging video content we were able to capture with the talented Noel Yeo. With plans already in motion for the next edition in May 2026, we look forward to seeing the show go from strength to strength.

In this issue, we feature a comprehensive review of another successful new event for the industry. The Furniture Component Expo at the Telford International Centre made its debut in April, creating a valuable and carefully curated opportunity to engage with and purchase products from the whole supply chain, all under one roof. Turn to page 22 to find out more.

Elsewhere, we profile Wirutex, a brand which has been designing, producing and marketing tools in polycrystalline diamond and tungsten carbide for machining wood and new-generation materials since 1980. We also examine the journey of Painted Ltd – a spray paint business that has recently ventured into woodworking, and which has purchased several HOMAG machines to aid its rapid expansion.

Our product features this issue turn their focus to edgebanding, adhesives, panel processing and dust extraction – with a selection of new and innovative products to aid and streamline your work processes.

I hope you enjoy the issue.

Import volumes in 2024 ‘fractionally ahead’ of 2023, figures show

According to the latest statistics from Timber Development UK, imports of the main timber and panel products for the first two months of 2024 are fractionally ahead of the same period in 2023, up by 0.2% (3,000m3) following improvements in February after a disappointing January start. Overall, however, volumes remain subdued in line with weaker construction output and a lacklustre economy.

FURNITURE MAKERS TO ORGANISE JULY CONFERENCE FOR HR PROFESSIONALS

Diversity, mental health in the workplace and supporting colleagues going through menopause are three of the subjects being discussed at the 2024 Routes to a Stronger Workforce event, organised by The Furniture Makers’ Company.

The one-day conference is taking place on Thursday 4th July 2024 (10:00am –3:30pm) at Furniture Makers’ Hall, London.

IDS HOSTS NATIONWIDE INSTALLER TRAINING ROADSHOW

Surface materials distributor IDS is hosting a series of free training sessions throughout June for installers across its nationwide branches, in partnership with one of its key worksurface suppliers, Wilsonart UK. The 1-hour training sessions will focus specifically on skilling up installers on how to install compact laminate worksurfaces.

With two months of data now available for 2024, we can see a more realistic reflection of the performance in the various timber product groups. Softwood, hardwood, particleboard and MDF have all experienced lower volumes compared to the first two months of 2023, whereas plywood, OSB and engineered wood products are currently ahead of last year.

Solid wood imports were 2% lower than in the first two months of 2023, while

imports of panel products were nearly 5% higher, largely due to increases in imported hardwood plywood driven by imports of eucalyptus-faced plywood from China.

According to recently released HMRC statistics, softwood plywood imports have experienced a 23.8% fall compared with JanuaryFebruary 2023.

Concerningly, however, this is not being reflected in the Coniferous Plywood quota – which as of 2nd May

2024 currently only has 4% remaining. TDUK has raised a challenge with HMRC to resolve this clear discrepancy between the trends apparent in their import statistics and the remaining quota.

Discover the Apprentice and Skills Plus Service from The Furniture Makers’ Company and FIESTA

We spoke with Natalie Cole, Skills Plus Coordinator, who will be responsible for the management and development of the service, to find out more ...

Could you talk a little about your professional background to date?

Before taking up this role I was working in education as a lecturer on the BA (hons) Product and Furniture Design degree course at Birmingham City University. It involved teaching students to think creatively and to consider user centred design, social context and commercial understanding. Key to this was encouraging students to explore materials, techniques and processes in relation to scales of manufacture, from one-off bespoke design to design for standardised mass production.

What does the Skills Plus Coordinator role entail?

My role involves managing the Apprentice & Skills Plus Service, which supports employers in the furniture sector to train, support and retain the next

generation of talent. It’s cofunded by The Furniture Makers’ Company and Furniture, Interiors, Education, Skills and Training Alliance (FIESTA). This primarily means demystify apprenticeships for employers and supporting them to find the right training provider and appropriate apprenticeship occupational standards for the skills gaps in their business, as well as signposting relevant funding and recruitment avenues.

Beyond supporting employers, I gather data and insights about the skills gap, training provision and recruitment challenges within the sector and disseminate this to key stakeholders.

What do you regard as being the most rewarding aspect of your role?

Bringing new people into the sector, whether that’s through an apprenticeship or

an alternative training path. I’ve recently supported an upholstery business to find apprenticeship training for a young person who has gone from working in sports science to upholstery!

What do you feel is deterring young people from considering a career in the furniture industry?

I believe a lack of awareness among school leavers about the furniture manufacturing sector is the main hurdle we need to overcome. This is not in any way the students’ fault, but rather a symptom of the gradual decline over the past 30-40 years in the teaching of workshop-based skills in schools.

30+ years ago, when I started at my local secondary school, there was both a wood workshop and a metal workshop and I had lessons in both, with staff who had specialist subject knowledge and skills. This is now incredibly rare in comprehensive schools. There is a myriad of reasons for this, but without the opportunity to enjoy and learn from making things in workshops, a huge number of children are missing out on the chance of discovering something they excel at.

How do you think we can begin to remedy this situation?

That is an enormous challenge – our discipline requires space, expensive equipment, teaching expertise, materials and that’s before considering the health and safety concerns schools have. However, something that could make a huge difference is schools placing equal emphasis on apprenticeships as A Levels and university, as a viable career pathway. T Levels may go some way to addressing this, but apprenticeships need shouting about. They are an amazing way to get trained (with no fees) while earning money. There is a guaranteed job at the end of it and great career prospects for working your way up through a business. Many of the operations managers, directors and technical directors I’ve spoken to over the past few months started their careers as apprentices.

The Apprenticeship Levy has been subject to criticism –what would your response to this be?

It has detractors and some supporters, but if you are a business that pays into the levy, I’d say make the most of it and get your money back

“I

don’t believe it is too late, but it is urgent. There is clear recognition in the sector that this needs to be addressed and a definite willingness among many to make this happen”

18 NEWS

by taking on an apprentice, or even multiple apprentices. The apprenticeship levy can also be used to upskill existing members of staff, so employers should also consider this option if they don’t want to bring in new apprentices. And if there is no requirement in your organisation for apprentices, then consider transferring part of your annual levy fund to a business in your supply chain.

What are you doing to bring stakeholders together and communicate the issue?

The issues of an aging workforce and a looming

skills gap within the furniture industry are well documented. Fortunately, I have the full support of The Furniture Makers Company as well as FIESTA.

FIESTA includes directors of the main furniture trade associations (AMUSF, BFM, NBF, CIUK and KBSA), as well as representatives from colleges and independent furniture training providers, WorldSkills UK and the specialist awarding and endpoint assessment organisation Achieve + Partners, providing a wealth of experience focussed on raising awareness and tackling this important issue.

You can receive news about the service by signing up to a free newsletter: https://bit.ly/ SkillsPlusNewsletter

Do you fear that the measures and initiatives discussed will be too little too late?

The Chinese proverb, ‘The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second-best time is now’ seems apt. I don’t believe it is too late, but it is urgent. There is clear recognition in the sector that this needs to be addressed and a definite willingness among many to make this happen. Appealing to young people is going to be critical. Compared

to other creative industries, particularly digital ones such as games design and interface design, the perception of the industry is maybe a little old-fashioned. This of course is not true – the sector has a huge amount to offer and perhaps we need to shout about this more.

Inaugural Furniture Components Expo event impresses and BFM confirms return in 2025

The Furniture Component Expo (FCE) will return to Telford next March after a successful inaugural event this spring. Hosted by British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM), FCE brings a specific focus to the supply side of the furniture industry.

As the first of its kind in the UK, the show is designed to meet the needs of large and small makers of furniture including beds, mattresses, cabinet and upholstery.

The event provides a one-stop showcase of component products from a wide range of leading suppliers, as well as offering opportunities for delegates to gain industry insights, collaborate with colleagues and network with partners across the industry and beyond.

With plans already in the pipeline for FCE 2025, BFM is poised to build on the success of the first expo, held in April this year.

BFM MD Phil Spademan said: “FCE was all about backing the British furniture industry and bringing together manufacturers and suppliers in a format which provided opportunities to review and purchase products from across the entire furniture supply chain.

“Comments from delegates and exhibitors have been extremely positive and we are delighted that, having recognised a need within the industry, we have provided an event that has been both useful and productive for manufacturers and suppliers.

“As we look ahead to FCE 2025, we are already evaluating the successes of the inaugural event and looking at areas we can build on for next year.”

FCE provided opportunities for delegates to explore products, network, gain industry insights and more.

Jack Angell, President at Massasoit/

Tackband Co exhibited at FCE. He said: “I was very pleased overall, particularly in view of 2024 being the inaugural show.

“I would imagine this bodes well for 2025 in terms of increasing both the number of exhibitors and volume of visitors. We will

certainly return for next year.”

Alongside the exhibitors, the show featured a packed programme of seminars and panel discussions covering vital topics such as Automation vs Skills.

Prominent on the agenda was the BFM’s Panel, entitled ‘Safe and Sustainable by Design – How can Industry ensure changes to the Furniture and Furnishing (Fire) (Safety) Regulations will reduce chemical flame-retardant use?’

The discussion was based on Silentnight’s research through engaging with the furniture sector on how to enable a reduction in CFR use, sharing their knowledge and findings on various subjects impacted by Fire Safety Regulations.

Another highlight of FCE 2024 was a presentation by Naomi Steemson, an International Trade Advisor at the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) which set out opportunities for the British furniture sector to boost export sales.

Her presentation gave an overview of the complete service offer from the DBT, which is designed to support furniture businesses of all sizes, including those looking at export markets for the first time.

Naomi offered insights into the role of International Trade Advisors – DBT’s experts in connecting businesses with export opportunities, as well as outlining initiatives including the UK Export Academy, UK Export Finance, Trade Missions and seminars, webinars and forthcoming events.

Phil Spademan added: “The BFM launched the Furniture Component Expo

24 after feedback from members identified a gap in the market for furniture-makers to browse the marketplace and seek out new innovations coming into the sector in a face-to-face setting.

“In feedback from delegates, many remarked on the convenience of bringing together multiple suppliers under one roof, as well as appreciating the opportunity to network and collaborate.”

The show was made possible through the support of our headline sponsors Vita Group and BeA Group, registration sponsor Carpenter Ltd and DispatchTrack, who sponsored the seminar theatre.

Mark Eastwood MP – chair of the Furniture & Furnishings All-Party Parliamentary Group – also lent his support to the event, which saw him cut the ribbon to officially launch the show. Mark also took the time to meet some of our exhibitors on the first morning.

Mark Eastwood MP said: “I was delighted to open the inaugural event which brings together component and furniture manufacturers and industry leaders.

“The furniture industry is worth £42 billion to the UK economy, and it is important that we support the manufacturers and retailers to help them grow and thrive.”

FCE 2025 will be held at Telford International Centre on 19th and 20th March. More information about exhibiting and sponsorship can be found at: fcexpo. co.uk

FCE 2024 in numbers

Preparations for FCE 2025 are already underway. Here, BFM MD Phil Spademan takes a look at some of the figures from the first ever event held this year:

Drilling down into the numbers is a key part of measuring success and understanding the value FCE 2024 brought to delegates and exhibitors alike.

The overwhelming majority (86%) of delegates attending the show this year had a role to play in purchasing products and services for their businesses.

Overall, 33% had influence on purchasing, 34% had joint responsibility for purchasing and 19% had sole purchasing power.

The main driver for delegates to attend FCE 2024 was looking for new products (21%), new suppliers (18%) and innovations (15%).

Networking opportunities and meeting new suppliers were both on the agenda for 14% of visitors, with 12% looking to meet up with existing suppliers at the show.

Of those attending, 6% were prioritising educational content.

Upholstery manufacturers comprised the majority of visitors (37%), although bed and mattress manufacturers (16%) and contract furniture manufacturers (14%) also made up the bulk of visitors along with cabinet furniture manufacturers and bedroom furniture manufacturers (both 9%).

Of the total number of visitors, 14% were from the kitchen/bathroom cabinet manufacture, leisure/ transport furniture manufacture or ‘other’ categories, demonstrating a wide demographic of people from across the industry engaging with exhibitors.

Unsurprisingly, given the prevalence of delegates from upholstery manufacturers, fabrics and upholstery were the main source of attraction for delegates attending FCE 2024, with 50% stating that as their priority interest.

However, foam and fibre fillings came a close second at 48%, with furniture manufacturing machinery, and hardware and components, both at 41%.

The broad scope of FCE 2024 was reflected in the other areas of product and service interest listed by delegates, which included:

• Furniture and bedding mechanisms

• Wood and wood products

• Adhesives, finishes and paints

• Packaging

• Foam fabricating

• Tools

• Sewing equipment

• Wood processing machinery

• Labels

• Bindings and trims

• Electronic components

• Yarns and threads

• Non-wovens

• Research and development

• Logistics, distribution and warehousing

• Racking systems

• Software and IT

• Testing laboratories

• Legislative and regulatory support

• Finance, insurance and financial management

A further 3% of delegates had interest priorities outside these areas, demonstrating the need for an industry event which provides a showcase for suppliers of products and services encompassing the whole furniture supply chain within a format that promotes connections with manufacturers.

While FCE 2024 attracted a healthy number and range of exhibitors, this will be something we look to enhance even further as preparations get underway for 2025 in recognition of the need for manufacturers to explore options with suppliers and to discover the latest innovations in components, products and services.

2025 dates announced

British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) has confirmed the success of its inaugural Furniture Component Expo (FCE) and we will see the event return to Telford International Centre next year.

The one-stop-shop trade show allows manufacturers to review and purchase products across the whole furniture supply chain from leading suppliers.

And, arrangements for FCE 2025 are already underway.

A first for the industry, the first FCE, held in April, provided opportunities for delegates to explore products, network, gain industry insights and more.

BFM MD Phil Spademan said: “FCE is all about backing British furniture manufacturing and we were honoured to have Mark Eastwood MP, chair of the Furniture & Furnishings All-Party Parliamentary Group cut the ribbon at our inaugural show and meet some of our exhibitors.

“The show was also made possible through the support of our headline sponsors Vita Group and BeA Group, registration sponsor Carpenter Limited and DispatchTrack, sponsors of the seminar theatre.”

Mark Eastwood MP said: “I was delighted to be able to open this inaugural event which brings together component and furniture manufacturers and industry leaders.

“The furniture industry is worth £42 billion to the UK economy, and it is important that the we support the manufacturers and retailers to help them grow and thrive.”

FCE was the first show of its kind in the UK, bringing specific focus to the supply side of the furniture industry and designed to meet the needs of large and small makers of furniture including beds, mattresses, cabinet and upholstery.

Delegates were able to browse product ranges and talk to suppliers as well as network and collaborate with colleagues.

Audiences at the seminar theatre engaged in a range of interesting industry discussions such as Automation vs Skills and the proposed fire safety regulations.

Phil said: “I’d like to thank our exhibitors and everyone who took part in the seminar programme, especially our panellists and moderator, Paul Farley from Furniture News who helped make it a success.

“We’ve had positive responses from visitors and exhibitors across furniture manufacturing and supply chain sectors and we’re delighted that the Expo has been so well received.”

The event will return to Telford International Centre on 19th and 20th March. Refer to the event website for information regarding exhibiting and sponsorship options. www.fcexpo.co.uk

Revolutionising furniture manufacturing with woodworking robotics

The recent showcase of Woodworking Robotics from JJ Smith at the Furniture Component Expo marks a pivotal moment in the furniture manufacturing industry. At the event, JJ Smith unveiled cuttingedge robotics solutions promising to redefine how furniture is made, setting a new standard for efficiency, safety and innovation.

Complementing human capabilities rather than replacing them lies at the heart of Woodworking Robotics. By harnessing the power of collaborative robots, automation can streamline furniture manufacturing processes, freeing skilled workers from mundane and dangerous tasks. This shift not only enhances productivity but also minimises the risk of workplace injuries and creates a safer working environment.

“As we reflect on our success at the Furniture Component Expo, it’s evident we are witnessing a change in furniture manufacturing with more and more manufacturers recognising the potential of automation in their own production processes”

“The enthusiastic reception from both national and global furniture manufacturers underscores the pressing need for automation in this industry,” Sales Director at JJ Smith, Ian Stanley, comments. “While the furniture sector has been traditionally reliant on manual labour, we’re pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in woodworking automation to help furniture manufacturers become more efficient and competitive in an increasingly dynamic market.”

Partnering with leading robotics manufacturers, JJ Smith offers a diverse range of automated solutions tailored to meet the specific needs of furniture manufacturers, including frame assembly, bandsawing, sanding and T-nut insertion.

Frame assembly system

Whether scaling up output or streamlining operations, the Woodworking Robotics Assembly System is engineered to deliver precise results with automated fastening and screwing processes for sofa and bed frames.

Robotic bandsaw

Automated bandsawing improves safety without compromising on accuracy when cutting solid wood furniture parts. With customisable hoppers, one operator can manage multiple cells, maximising productivity, enhancing safety and saving valuable time.

Automated sanding

Integrating with traditional sanding methods, innovative ‘mimic’ software empowers operators of all skill levels to effortlessly programme robots to carry out a range of furniture sanding operations.

T-Nut insertion

This system ensures precise insertion of T-nuts, guaranteeing perfect results every time. Timber is loaded via a customisable hopper with up to one hour of continuous insertion before reloading.

“As we reflect on our success at the Furniture Component Expo, it’s evident we are witnessing a change in furniture manufacturing with more and more manufacturers recognising the potential of automation in their own production processes,” Ian comments.

“We’re listening closely to the needs of our customers and are excited about what the future holds in automated furniture manufacturing!”

Painted Ltd’s expansion journey with HOMAG

Painted Ltd, a spray paint business that recently ventured into woodworking, has rapidly expanded its capabilities and market presence. Founded just three years ago in a modest garage, Painted Ltd has grown into a thriving enterprise offering a range of services for furniture and kitchen needs.

“I’ve always aspired to lead a business, to invest my time and dedication into something meaningful,” explains Emilia Dlutowski, the owner of Painted Ltd. “We started off small in 2021, but from the outset I had big plans. Once we’d become established in the spraying side of things, the time came to expand into joinery.”

With a team of dedicated professionals, a commitment to quality, and a customercentric approach, Painted Ltd has become a go-to destination for bespoke and endto-end furniture solutions.

The challenge

Prior to investing in its own woodworking machinery, Painted Ltd relied on various suppliers to handle manufacturing processes. “We were having to outsource everything and it was eating into our margins. Not to mention the lack of control. Clearly, something had to change.”

Emilia saw the potential in bringing everything in-house and being selfsufficient as a business. “Ultimately, we wanted to be a one-stop-shop, the go-to place for quality joinery with a quick turnaround.”

As Painted Ltd sought to expand its woodworking operations, the company faced the challenge of finding reliable and efficient machinery to meet its growing demands. Emilia recognised the need for advanced woodworking equipment that could enhance productivity, quality, and versatility.

“I wanted to get something that would do a lot more than basic joinery,” Emilia explains. “I needed something bigger and better.”

Discovering HOMAG

After extensive research, Emilia discovered HOMAG, a global leader in woodworking machinery, systems, and software solutions.

“Inevitably we came across HOMAG.

As I was new to this industry I hadn’t heard of them before, but after thorough research, they seemed like the perfect fit for our needs.” Impressed by HOMAG’s reputation for innovation and quality, Emilia arranged to see the machines for herself.

The machines

The HOMAG experience

Emilia fondly recalls her experience visiting HOMAG to see the machines in person. “From the minute we walked in to the minute we walked out, I was like a kid in a sweet shop. It was love at first sight. I couldn’t wait to own the machines. They just looked amazing.”

The HOMAG team also left an impression. “Everyone we encountered, from James Mason, our local Sales Manager, to the software and showroom teams, were just so friendly and knowledgeable. We felt very welcome, and better yet we never felt pressured to buy anything. The machines don’t need anyone to sell them, anyway; they sell themselves!”

Installation and support

The installation process was seamless, with HOMAG’s delivery team ensuring a smooth transition. “It wasn’t disruptive in the slightest,” Emilia reflects. “We knew exactly what to expect and when to

expect it. The delivery guys were great, and the training provided, namely by Ryan, was absolutely excellent.”

Outcomes and future plans

Broadly speaking, Painted Ltd has fulfilled its goal of becoming an end-to-end provider of bespoke furniture solutions. Since integrating HOMAG machines into its operations, the business has experienced increased efficiency, reduced production costs, and enhanced product quality.

“The acquisition of HOMAG machines marked a significant milestone for Painted Ltd,” explains Emilia. “The transition from relying on various suppliers to in-house manufacturing has not only improved quality and efficiency but also reduced costs significantly. We’ve sliced roughly 60% off the cost of a sale, and the results are perfect every time. Since using HOMAG equipment, we’ve never had a dissatisfied customer or missed a deadline.”

Emilia is confident that these investments will propel Painted Ltd to new heights, enabling the business to compete with industry leaders and fulfil ambitious growth targets. “Already we’ve increased our brand awareness, and even more excitingly, we’re starting to win some big contracts. Truly, this is all possible due to the HOMAG machines.”

“Perfect Matt” finish complements Ostermann’s extensive range of matt edgings

Edging specialist, Ostermann, has just launched a new surface finish for extremely matt furniture edgings. Processors can now choose from three qualities – Super Matt, Excellent Matt and the newly-added Perfect Matt finish.

Board suppliers present an increasing number of matt surfaces in their collections. You will soon establish, however, that there are different types of matt. If you place the boards of different manufacturers next to each other, it becomes clear that not only the diversity of colours and decors, but also different versions of matt must be considered.

To present furniture makers with as much choice as possible to find the best solution for the edging, Ostermann has

now extended its portfolio of surface finishes. In addition to the existing Super Matt and Excellent Matt versions, Perfect Matt now presents a new option that is even more pleasant to the touch.

17 plain colours are already available with a finish in the new matt quality. Find all new edgings by typing in the search term “#Highlights05” on the Ostermann website www.ostermann.eu. They are available from stock in 1mm thickness and many widths. All Ostermann ABS edgings can be cut to any required width up to 100mm on request.

Processors working with zero bondline machines can also get their edgings with a functional layer specially made to match the respective technology.

“The

ready-to-use product comes in a spray bottle and removes greasy marks and residues of adhesive, dust or dirt without affecting the matt appearance, making it ideal for the final assembly”

46 EDGEBANDING MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY

New finish: Perfect Matt

The new edgings feature a soft and warm matt finish with a uniquely even touch and feel. The surface is non-porous and therefore easy to clean. High scratch resistance and anti-fingerprint properties are obligatory with this variant. Colours range from various shades of white and grey to selected plain colours such as taupe, burgundy, black, green, and blue.

Classic finish: Excellent Matt

Edgings with an Excellent Matt finish have a dull matt, coarse surface and feature anti-fingerprint properties. They are highly scratch-resistant and the range of colours is even bigger. Also, these come in different thicknesses: 1 and 2mm are available.

Standard finish: Super Matt

Super matt edgings have a smooth matt standard surface. They are available from Ostermann in a wide range of colours

and different thicknesses. Unlike the previously mentioned variants, this one does not have anti-fingerprint properties, which is why the Ostermann experts recommend the super matt surface finish mainly for less exposed elements, such as furniture parts that are rarely touched or come into contact with grease.

Introducing REDOCOL greenline Finish Cleaner Perfect Matt

Surfaces in the furniture industry are becoming increasingly matt. But how do you remove unwanted stains, which will inevitably occur sometimes during installation? With the REDOCOL greenline Finish Cleaner Perfect Matt, Ostermann’s experts have a new and particularly ecofriendly solution.

Classic cleaners often leave a protective film on the surface. What is desirable for glossy materials and protects against new dirt accumulations often proves to

“The new edgings feature a soft and warm matt finish with a uniquely even touch and feel”

be counterproductive for matt surfaces. With the REDOCOL greenline Finish Cleaner Perfect Matt, Ostermann now offers a cleaner that has been specially developed for matt, super matt and extremely matt surfaces. The ready-touse product comes in a spray bottle and removes greasy marks and residues of adhesive, dust or dirt without affecting the matt appearance, making it ideal for the final assembly. All information on the new product can also be found under the search term “Perfect Matt Cleaner” on the Ostermann website www.ostermann.eu.

Perfect cleaner for all matt surfaces

Many matt and super matt furniture surfaces are now protected from visible fingerprints by modern technologies. Nevertheless, soiling cannot be completely avoided during the final assembly. The environmentally friendly REDOCOL greenline Finish Cleaner Perfect Matt removes this soiling and effectively cleans, for example, ABS and PP edgings without leaving streaks, as well as coated or lacquered wooden boards or compact laminates with matt surfaces. It is also ideal for linoleum surfaces.

Growth for the REDOCOL greenline Family

The biodegradable cleaner is an important addition to the REDOCOL greenline series. These products focus in particular on environmentally friendly ingredients, ecology and occupational safety. Examples include the versatile workpiece and machine cleaner REDOCOL Teclinex One For All and the solvent-free edging glue REDOCOL greenline Kantol.

Don’t forget the right

cloths

The right cloths for cleaning should not be missing in the assembly vehicle. The Ostermann experts recommend either the evenly woven REDOCOL Soft microfibre cloth or the REDOCOL Strong microfibre cloth with a firm waffle texture. A natural fibre cloth from REDOCOL made from 100% natural fibres is also available. All cloths can be used wet, damp or dry, and are suitable for all common surfaces. sales.uk@ostermann.eu www.ostermann.eu

Edgebanding solutions for aspirational designs

Camco has long been renowned for its customer service and excellence in the supply of both veneer and ABS edgebanding material. The company also offers a variety of other edgebanding options that are ideally suited to creating impressive and aspirational designs.

Working closely with its customers, Camco takes pride in meeting the everincreasing demands of a challenging marketplace. In addition to its standard edgebanding products, Camco has a range of creative and desirable options for manufacturers.

“Regular edgebanding is of course a proven and highly practical way to finish the edges of furniture – but beyond the standard offerings, Camco has several alternative options worth further investigation,” says Camco’s David Phillips.

“Working with industry-leading manufacturers, we are able to provide the highest quality products both on time and on budget.”

Veneer edgebanding – thick veneer in rolls

Thick veneer rolls are constructed using several veneer layers of standard thickness (0.5mm) pressed together to form a sandwich to the desired thickness.

To produce thick edges, veneers are selected based on quality choice and colour coordination. Camco has a wide variety of finishes and veneers with widths ranging from 14 to 250mm.

David explains why thick edges in rolls are seen as the ideal substitute for solid veneer strips: “First quality veneer is used

on the upper layer, thus ensuring the finest aspect of tonality and grain required. Also, thick veneer rolls are more flexible than solid veneer strips and continuous thick veneer rolls can be used on automatic edge banding machines.

“In addition, a roughened base layer ensures perfect adherence, and it offers better and easier conservation and storage possibilities. Importantly, endless thick veneer rolls ensure minimum wastage during the edging process.”

Solid end grain veneer edgebanding

By using Camco’s solid, end-grain edgeband, veneer boards have the natural look of a solid wood board, where even the growth rings can be clearly seen.

For the manufacture of this edgeband, Camco uses natural cross-cut veneer in 0.7mm foils. The resulting pieces are joined to form a roll. In addition, to strengthen that roll, a 0.5mm veneer under layer is added, thus obtaining a sandwich of 1.2mm thickness approximately. The top layer of the end grain tapes is always supplied sanded.

New PVC edgebands – stitch edgebanding

Stitch edgeband gives components a more realistic feel with the imitation of a double stitch.

Undoubtedly, stitched leather edgeband is a notable trend with a rich, unique texture and eye-catching look. It is ideal for decoration purposes, conferring an industrial, rustic or vintage aesthetic and also combines well with soft embossing.

Stitch edgeband designs have been created to match with melamine boards popularised by key manufacturers in the market.

Camco highlights this new edgeband as an ideal complement, which will enhance the elegance of leather and textile embossing of melamine boards. The stitch imitation embossed and not just printed on the edgeband emphasises realism in walk-in closets and wardrobes.

End grain embossed-in register edgebanding

Optics and haptics blend to get the perfect match. End grain embossed-in register edgebanding gives Camco customers an opportunity to stand out from the crowd.

As a result of the new production process, the embossed surface matches the printed wood grain design, giving a realistic solid wood look. The colours of the surface are applied into the different embossing heights, in this way obtaining a realistic wood effect, where the veneer texture can be seen and touched in the edgeband.

Camco recommends the use of this edgeband with melamine boards that have two tonalities in their surface. The company says a win-win design arises from combining this kind of melamine design with its synchronised end grain edgeband.

Edgebander support & training from Daltons Wadkin

Leading machinery supplier Daltons Wadkin has expanded its engineering support and training services to cover edgebanders from SCM, Felder, Homag, Holz-Her and other manufacturers.

To help ensure consistent quality and reliable output from any edgebander, there are four key areas that need regular attention – servicing, setup, tooling and training. To this end, Daltons Wadkin has developed a unique offering of tiered services designed to address these critical aspects.

Stage 1: Service – this includes electrical, pneumatic and mechanical checks to ensure the correct and safe operation of the machine. Cleaning of air filters, motor fans, tracks and drive gears. Greasing of linear bearings, checking glue pot condition and other critical points. Identifying/advising of any parts, which for any edgebander are absolutely vital to limit downtown and prevent breakdowns.

Stage 2: Setup – with the current tooling inside the machine, Daltons Wadkin takes a step-by-step approach to the setup of your edgebander for all materials being edged. Focusing on pre-milling adjustment, glue application, deflection on all units ensuring a consistent finish, end trimming saw adjustment for both flush and angled cuts, rough and fine trimming adjustment, corner round set up including

pressures/speeds, setting up the radius scrapers to give a smooth radius, finally making sure the glue scrapers, buffers and spray units are giving the best finish possible.

Stage 3: Tool Change – probably the most important one of all, changing the tooling following a service and set up is what keeps the finishing quality high. This includes changing the pre miller blocks (or tips), end trim saws, rough and fine cutter tips, corner round profile tooling (or multiradius), radius scrapers, glue scrapers and buffer pads. After all the tooling is changed the units are set up giving a perfect finish, radius with no chatter marks and smooth corners.

Stage 4: Training – for novice and experienced learners focusing on key functions of the machine, correct setting, adhesive identification, correct tooling set up, safe working practices, identifying hazards, troubleshooting advise and full practical assessment.

“Edgebander servicing needs a specialist approach,” enthuses Daltons Wadkin Service Director, Cliff Sharp. “Our staged support package allows us to work with customers, addressing their specific needs while aligning to a strict protocol so nothing is left to chance.”

As with all service visits carried out by Daltons Wadkin, customers can expect a detailed report of work completed with any recommended remedial work. Service reports are stored in a secure cloud platform along with any breakdown reports, building up a historical maintenance record for your equipment.

In a continuous pursuit of excellence, Daltons Wadkin has proudly announced the addition of Shaun Hill to its expanding service department. With a wealth of experience under his belt, Shaun can apply his skill set to the majority of makes and models in the industry.

“Following our recent appointment as SCM dealer, we have seen a surge in edgebander sales,” says Managing Director, Alex Dalton. “It is therefore imperative that we bolster our service team to help ensure seamless support for our ever-growing customer base.” 0115 986 5201 info@daltonswadkin.com www.daltonswadkin.com

In fact, the first machine – an edgebander – was purchased back in 1999. “HOMAG have been with us since the start,” explains Tom. “That original edgebander served us very well for the better part of two decades. Needless to say, we wouldn’t be where we are today without it.

“Naturally, however, the time came for us to upgrade. Our first instinct was to stick with HOMAG machinery, but rather than rushing into things we took the time

to research other options, just in case a superior player had emerged since the 90s.

“As expected, we came full circle. We knew already that the service you get with HOMAG is second to none. They might not be the cheapest, but when you look at the service and the quality of the machines, nothing else compares. Sticking with HOMAG was ultimately a no-brainer.”

Following this realisation, Kitchen Doors Northwest expanded its capabilities by acquiring the SAWTEQ B-300 beam saw a few years ago. However, the real transformation occurred with the recent acquisition of three additional HOMAG machines.

58 EDGEBANDING MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY

Seeking solutions

Tom collaborated with the HOMAG team to address production inefficiencies that Kitchen Doors Northwest were contending with, particularly in crafting shaker doors with PVC edges. “Our current method was labour-intensive and time-consuming, involving multiple steps of cutting, edging, and grooving – a lengthy and finicky process.”

Seeking efficiency and simplicity, Tom consulted with Jon from HOMAG, who introduced a solution: an edgebander with an incorporated grooving facility. Intrigued, Tom made the trip to HOMAG’s showroom in Germany to see it in action.

“I figured that seeing was believing, so off we went to Germany for a demonstration. I knew straight away it would streamline our production and significantly reduce our turnaround time for making shaker doors.”

Further discussions with HOMAG revealed a range of options tailored to Kitchen Doors Northwest’s additional needs. Jon’s expertise and understanding of the company’s challenges ensured it found the right solutions. “Jon knew exactly what we needed to improve our operation. HOMAG have this way of knowing how to solve every problem you might be having.”

Consequently, Kitchen Doors Northwest acquired the following machines:

LOOPTEQ

O-300 - Return Conveyor:

Ideal for handling a wide range of materials with high capacity and gentle handling, offering benefits such as fast amortisation and ergonomic operation.

“We can now effortlessly manufacture panels of different sizes to meet all manner of requirements. It’s made our operations much more flexible and adaptable”

EDGETEQ XES 200 – Glue Service Station: Designed for processing PUR glue, offering solutions for storage, handling, and glue tank cleaning.

EDGETEQ S-380 - Edge Banding Machine: A versatile solution featuring high feed speeds, multi-function profile trimming, and flexibility for various material changes.

Doubled efficiency, and other benefits

The incorporation of the LOOPTEQ O-300, EDGETEQ XES 200 and EDGETEQ S-380 at Kitchen Doors Northwest has delivered a host of benefits, as highlighted by Tom.

“The biggest improvement has been in our efficiency,” he reflects. “Quite simply, we’ve doubled it. Our turnaround used to be a week – it’s now been slashed to a couple of days. This has not only enhanced customer satisfaction but has also allowed us to handle higher volumes of orders with ease.

“In a similar vein, everything’s become a lot more streamlined and simplified for us. Tasks that were once difficult and time-consuming are now trivial, thanks to the advanced features and capabilities of the HOMAG machines. Honestly, I’m not sure how we ever managed without them!

“Our own convenience aside, the machines have boosted our processing

capabilities for the benefit of our customers. We can now effortlessly manufacture panels of different sizes to meet all manner of requirements. It’s made our operations much more flexible and adaptable.”

Seamless installation and integration

When it came to installing the new HOMAG machines at Kitchen Doors Northwest, the process was carefully planned to minimise disruption to operations. “We didn’t make it easy for them – we’re in a tight little location on a semi-busy road. The delivery guys made light work of it, though; they arranged to come early, and got these three massive machines off the wagons and into the workshop like it was nothing. It was impressive to watch. There was no disruption to our daily operations.

“The training provided by HOMAG was also excellent,” continues Tom. “Our operators found it incredibly intuitive, and it didn’t affect our production schedule at all. Thanks to the comprehensive training, our team was able to start using the new machines effectively right from the get-go.”

Recommendation and future prospects

Reflecting on their journey with HOMAG, Tom expresses his unequivocal recommendation for the brand. “I would definitely recommend HOMAG to anyone looking to enhance their manufacturing capabilities. They not only provide cutting-edge machinery but also exceptional support and expertise.”

Looking ahead, Kitchen Doors Northwest is poised for further growth and expansion. He concludes, “Our latest experience with HOMAG has been transformative, and we’re now exploring additional solutions such as storage facilities with overhead cranes to further optimise our operations. The future looks very promising, and that’s largely thanks to our partnership with HOMAG.”

REDOCOL by Ostermann

Easily demarcated by its striking red “O”, the REDOCOL range comprises over 600 products – ranging from furniture handles and workshop needs to glues and adhesives – which each fulfil the highest standards of professional craftsmanship. The brand name, REDOCOL, is composed of the parts “Red-O” and “col”, with “col” standing for “collection”.

New for Ostermann is the REDOCOL collection’s EVA hotmelt adhesive, REDOCOL Kantomelt lightly filled. With EVA hotmelt adhesives, carpenters/ cabinet makers can choose between filled, lightly filled and unfilled products. Filled versions contain resins and minerals, such as chalk or lime, in addition to the pure adhesives. This makes filled EVA hotmelt adhesives particularly easy to process. Unfilled hotmelt, on the other hand, consists of pure EVA copolymer. The adhesive can be applied more thinly and produce a thinner joint when the machine is optimally adjusted. The processing, however, is more demanding, and higher feed rates are recommended.

The new EVA hotmelt REDOCOL Kantomelt lightly filled offers a good alternative. Compared to an unfilled hotmelt adhesive, the all-rounder is much easier to process and therefore particularly suitable for older and slowrunning machines. There is no unwanted stringing or smearing of the adhesive. The hotmelt adhesive is further characterised by low consumption and a thinner glue joint as well as good heat and cold resistance. The bondline comes close to the quality of unfilled products.

Two colours, two container sizes

The new hotmelt adhesive is available in natural and white. For light board colours and decors, the Ostermann experts recommend white. Darker colours and decors are best processed with naturalcoloured adhesive. If you want to test the new product first, choose the 2.5kg variant. For regular use, the larger 25kg container is best.

REDOCOL Kantomelt PUR LM with reduced Isocyanate content

With REDOCOL Kantomelt PUR LM, Ostermann now offers a new PUR hotmelt adhesive with low monomeric isocyanates content. When processing edgings, hotmelt adhesives based on polyurethane (PUR) ensure a particularly good, durable and water- and heat-resistant bond. Since the requirements for occupational safety and environmental protection are increasing in the area of PUR adhesives, Ostermann has now included a PUR hotmelt adhesive with a reduced monomeric isocyanate content in its range.

The new REDOCOL Kantomelt PUR LM is the first non-labelled PUR product of the REDOCOL brand. It is available as a 2kg block and in two colours – natural and white. For more information, type in the search term “#REDOCOLLM” on the Ostermann website.

More carpentry tips on “bonding” Carpenters/cabinet makers can find product-related information and processing tips for individual adhesives in the product details of the Ostermann online shop. The Expert Advice section “From Practice - to Practitioners” at www. ostermann.eu is also useful. Cascamite – A legacy brand in safe hands

Ureka Global, a long-established adhesive business based in Newport, was proud to welcome proudly Cascamite into its house of brands, lauding its uniqueness, high performance and high user satisfaction.

The owners and founders of the original Cascamite were The Borden Company, located in Michigan USA and founded in 1857. Borden quickly became the country’s “largest producer of dairy and pasta products”. The industrial arm of the business produced wallpaper, plastics, adhesives and resins. It was at this time that Cascamite was born and first hit the shelves across America.

A powdered resin adhesive that when mixed with water created a weatherproof glue for the bonding of timber for both interior and exterior applications, the Cascamite product quickly became popular with the timber processing industries and a firm favourite with carpenters and joiners because of its ease of use and reliable bond strength.

Over the last 90 years the Cascamite brand has had a number of custodians, each safeguarding the legacy of this historic brand and crafting its future. The acquisition of the Cascamite brand by Ureka marked the beginning of a new chapter in the story. Ureka has revived and improved the original powdered formula, delivering the consistency, ease of use and bond integrity from previous decades.

The original powdered ureaformaldehyde resin glue provides a waterresistant product that repels moulds & fungi. A simple and quick mix for both indoor, outdoor joinery and assembly work proving to be more economical than a one-part liquid. There are countless stories of extraordinary bond strength and joint or application longevity with the Cascamite brand.

With such a rich history behind the ‘Casca’ name you won’t be surprised to learn that the original trio of Cascamite, Cascarez & Cascaphen has now been

joined by Cascapur & Cascamate – creating a current range of five exceptional adhesives.

Cascarez is a general purpose liquid resin, the fastest, strongest adhesive of its type delivering a bond in 10 minutes, ready to handle in 30.

Cascaphen is a high performance PRF structural adhesive, for waterproof exterior applications that will withstand constant immersion in water.

Cascapur is a polyurethane fast cure wood glue, a multi-application gap-filling product where high strength and water resistance is important. Cascapur has also been successfully tested for the bonding of Accoya.

Cascamate is a fast cure mitre bond kit for use with a wide range of materials, delivering super quick bond integrity in 30 seconds.

The main challenge for the new custodians is to create awareness of the new Cascamite product while embracing its history and to educate the new generations of carpenters and joiners.

Current adhesive competitors to Cascamite will be liquid applied straight from the container – easy! This is true, but if bond confidence and joint longevity are important, then Cascamite says “don’t risk it – mix it!”

Revolutionise your veneering process with Ubabond

Adkwik realises the hassle of using different adhesives to bond veneer, the need to mix traditional resins to the correct ratio, and the risks with formaldehyde in traditional resins. That’s why the company knew it had to revolutionise the veneering process. With Adkwik’s new single component resin, there is no mixing required, no bleedthrough, and no H&S concerns – just consistent flawless results every time.

Adkwik is renowned for giving its customers outstanding technical support and is always looking to improve their production processes. Over the past year, the company has formulated a product which contains no formaldehyde while, it proudly claims, “outperforming traditional products”.

According to Adkwik, Ubabond creates a bond “over and above what can be achieved with the traditional resin and

hardener mix”. The bond is said to be stronger, as well as faster, with curing times of just 30 seconds.

Throughout the testing period, Ubabond’s results were highly impressive, with a reduction in press times of over 40%.

Ubabond might not be for everyone, but if a customer wishes to eliminate three issues in particular, it would prove a perfect solution:

• Having to mix two part traditional resin and hardeners. The hassle, the time and the issue of inconsistency can all be resolved with Ubabond.

• Liquid and powdered traditional resins contain formaldehyde. Ubabond has a formaldehyde-free formulation.

• Bleedthrough on open grain veneers and panel distortion. Shrinking panels and bleed-through are common challenges for all of Adkwik’s customers. Finally, it has a solution that will change all of that. 01223 412373.

10 common mistakes to avoid during flat lamination

Flat lamination of panels in industrial settings involves bonding decorative foils on substrate materials or multiple layers of materials together to create a single, solid panel. While this process is widely used and efficient, it’s not without its challenges and potential defects. Here are some technical difficulties and possible defects that can occur during industrial flat lamination:

1. Adhesive uniformity: Ensuring consistent application of adhesive across the entire surface of the panel is crucial. Inconsistent adhesive application can lead to areas with insufficient bonding, resulting in weak spots or delamination. Especially in foiling applications, experience shows that slot nozzle application allows lower glue weights with a perfectly homogeneous glue pattern, which is key for flawless high-gloss or super-matt finishes.

2. Adhesive curing: Proper curing of the adhesive is essential for achieving strong bonds. Insufficient curing time or inadequate curing conditions can result in weak bonds or incomplete adhesion. It’s key to respect the curing time as indicated in the data sheets of the product.

3. Moisture content: Moisture content in the materials being laminated can cause issues such as warping or bubbling during lamination. Controlling the moisture content of the materials is critical to preventing these defects. A lack of moisture, especially in plastics or metallic materials, will influence the cross-linking time of the adhesive.

4. Surface preparation: Proper surface preparation is essential for ensuring good adhesion between layers. Contaminants or irregularities on the surface can interfere with bonding and lead to defects such as bond failure or uneven bonding. Make sure the surface is clean, even and if necessary pre-treated to have an adequate surface energy.

5. Temperature and pressure control: Maintaining consistent temperature and pressure throughout the lamination process is crucial for achieving uniform bonding. Variations in temperature or pressure can result in defects such as voids, wrinkles, or uneven bonding.

6. Material compatibility: Ensuring compatibility between the materials being laminated is important to prevent issues such as chemical reactions or delamination. Different materials may require different adhesive formulations, chemical or physical pre-treatment or bonding techniques.

7. Handling and storage: Proper handling and storage of materials before and after lamination are important to prevent damage or contamination that could affect the quality of the finished panels.

8. Quality control: Implementing effective quality control measures throughout the lamination process is essential for identifying and addressing defects early on. This may include visual inspection, testing for bond strength, or monitoring process parameters such as temperature and pressure.

9. Environmental factors: Environmental factors such as humidity, dust, or airborne contaminants can affect the lamination process and result in defects if not properly controlled.

10. Equipment maintenance: Regular maintenance of lamination equipment is important to ensure optimal performance and prevent issues such as uneven pressure distribution or adhesive application.

By addressing these technical difficulties and implementing appropriate quality control measures, manufacturers can minimise defects and produce highquality laminated panels for various industrial applications.

Fercell installs comprehensive dust extraction and shredding solutions

Fercell provides complete industrial ventilation and recycling systems. With over 40 years of experience, countless solutions are in use every day in the woodworking industry.

A leading manufacturer and designer of innovative workplace solutions contacted Fercell to design, manufacture, install, and commission an industrial ventilation and recycling solution for processing wood dust and waste.

With an extensive range of bespoke products being produced onsite, the client was looking for a dust extraction solution for their joinery workshop, to provide comprehensive ventilation for various woodworking equipment, including CNC machinery and spindles. In addition to the extraction element, a size reduction system to process any wood offcuts was also required.

Delivering a solution

Fercell delivered and installed all the components for the dust extraction and size reduction system. The final

outcome consisted of a UF dust extractor, connected to a centralised ducting system and a WEIMA Ultra 60 industrial shredder. By installing a UF dust extraction unit outside, Fercell was able to deliver a solution that was both practical and external to the rest of the working environment. The WEIMA Ultra 60 is located within the joinery, eliminating the need for stacks of waste, and offering an efficient solution for reducing waste wood.

Extracting the dust

The UF dust extractor is an economical solution ideal for high dust loading applications. It benefits from a generous filter area, large collection capacity, compact footprint, the ability to accommodate numerous fan types and numerous options including a sprinkler and air return system.

Connected via a network of ducting to various woodworking machinery, any waste material discharges to the UF unit directly into refuse sacks located beneath the filter plenum. The dust collection

“By installing a UF dust extraction unit outside, Fercell was able to deliver a solution that was both practical and external to the rest of the working environment”

sacks and bins are easily released and locked into position with a rapid overcentre toggle system, ensuring minimum downtime. The UF extractor also boasts an automatic filter cleaning mechanism. A non-return valve stops material from travelling back through the duct during the cleaning cycle.

Wood shredding with WEIMA

The WEIMA Ultra 60 single-shaft shredder is a compact solution, delivering flexibility, durability and reliability. It features a segmented floor, gearbox safety package, WEIMA WAP gearbox, patented “V” rotor housing and double the number of shredder knives you would find on a typical market shredder. Increased shredder knives deliver increased throughput volumes and the material output is a uniform homogeneous fraction size.

Shredding will deliver a number of benefits, including freeing up valuable storage space, reducing waste disposal costs and creating a sustainable output for any scrap wood.

Working in partnership with WEIMA as the sole UK distributor, Fercell has the capacity to deliver high-quality German recycling equipment, including shredders, briquette presses, granulators and drainage presses.

Installation of the dust extraction and shredding system has allowed Fercell’s client to operate at higher capacity throughout the joinery workshop, whilst adhering to HSE guidelines and effectively capturing any dust fumes and freeing up valuable storage space by reducing any waste wood.

AL-KO: a safe choice

Tired of the confusion surrounding dust extraction safety measures? TM Machinery’s managing director Matt Pearce clarifies what some refer to as plain old BS …

“The BS EN 16770 regulation outlines safety standards for all internal dust extraction systems, and compliance with this important regulation is paramount,” says Matt, “tut contrary to traditional belief, not every internal dust extraction unit requires additional safety measures.

“You might have heard claims that additional explosion panel relief, like venting to the outside, is a must for any internal dust extraction unit but let’s debunk that myth right now by explaining regulation BS EN 16770 further.

“The woodworking industry knows the serious risks of fire and explosion associated with wood dust. Classified in dust explosion class ST, strict standards are essential for everyone’s safety.

“ Enter regulation BS EN 16770, outlining safety standards for all internal dust extraction systems. Compliance is paramount but contrary to traditional belief, not every internal dust extraction unit requires additional safety measures.

“If your dust extraction system does not meet BS EN 16770 standards, you may need to install further measures to protect your workshop and employees. Unless, of course, you are an AL-KO customer.

“AL-KO dust extraction units eliminate the need for additional measures. With an outer shell pressure resistant to 200mbar m/s as standard, these extraction units ensure full compliance with BS EN 16770.

“That’s not all. Larger models in the Power Unit range feature a cutting-edge thermal sensor which automatically shut down fans, halting all filter cleaning, and triggering the fire extinguishing unit if a fire risk is detected. Additionally, larger units come with a tank filled with water and special anti-freeze fluid by default, further mitigating risks.

“For businesses that need filter cleaning during operation, AL-KO also provides an impressive ignition protection system. Complying with strict regulations, these

features not only monitor the extraction system continuously but also prevent fire and explosion risks in the workplace without sacrificing performance.

72 DUST EXTRACTION & WOOD WASTE MANAGEMENT
“Why pay to have waste wood removed when it can be converted into free heating?”

A West Yorkshire picture frame manufacturer has purchased two wood waste heaters from Wood Waste Technology to save money on heating and waste disposal costs.

Established in 2005, Trade Picture Frames imports and manufactures picture frames for the trade from its factory in Holmfirth, Kirklees. In today’s economy, the company made a sensible decision to invest in a wood waste heater to help the business reduce its heating and waste disposal costs.

Having read the excellent reviews of the wood waste heaters manufactured in the UK by Wood Waste Technology, the team contacted the company to find out more.

“As we work with various types of wood, including MDF and hard and soft woods, we have a lot of wood waste to dispose of,” explains Factory Manager at Trade Picture Frames, Adrian Sykes. “Our glass also comes to us on wooden pallets, which also need to be disposed of. It occurred to us, why pay to have waste

wood removed when it can be converted into free heating, allowing us to stop using the expensive electric heaters in the workshop on cold days? Plus, we’d be saving money on skips, which cost the business around £300-£400 a month. When we calculated all that, it was the easiest investment decision we’ve made!”

Following a site survey and quote, Trade Picture Frames purchased two WT15s, one for each of the smaller and larger manufacturing units.

Adrian continues: “We’re delighted with our purchase. It does everything we were promised in terms of helping us reduce our operational costs. We work in an old building, with lots of open space, and the wood waste heaters do a great job of keeping the place warm.

“The staff at Wood Waste Technology have been immensely helpful at every stage, from placing the order to installing the heater – the company certainly lives up to its great reputation.“

As well as offering site survey, design,

manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance for new units, Wood Waste Technology also services all types of wood waste heaters. It’s also the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters.

For those of us old enough to remember the original WOODMEX Exhibitions at the NEC in Birmingham (I have been exhibiting there for almost 40 years) the exhibition used to belong to the WMSA, Woodworking Machinery Suppliers Association. It then moved into the W series of exhibitions in private hands and has now been re-branded as the Materials & Finishes Show.

In the early days at the NEC, Wadkin would take almost an entire hall and fill it with machinery, all of the sales staff wore bright red blazers and a siren sounded when a million pounds worth of orders had been taken at the show!

We have to remember that in those early days in the 1980s, there was no internet, no websites no emails and barely any computers around. Customers came to the exhibition to see the latest our industry could offer.

Ranheat would take an entire plant to the NEC and erect a full 35m3 silo and a 300 kW Heater plant on the stand.

COVID had a massive effect on exhibitions globally and machinery manufacturers had already had to find other ways to show off their products to prospective customers.

“Ranheat would take an entire plant to the NEC and erect a full 35m3 silo and a 300 kW Heater plant on the stand”

The change had already started in 2016 which was the first time Ranheat experimented with a display-only exhibition stand, with no hardware on the stand.

Exhibiting at the NEC has increasingly become more and more expensive, with crane hire forklifts and services by ILS being mandatory.

It was cheaper to buy second-hand carpet tiles on the Internet than to rent flooring from the flooring contractor. The same went for furniture, buy it from IKEA was cheaper than renting from the furniture contractor.

So, the question remains – are exhibitions worth the cost? By the time this editorial is published, the show will be over, and exhibitors will be able to supply the answer to that question.

74 DUST EXTRACTION & WOOD WASTE MANAGEMENT

Cut costs, not efficiencies with AL-KO

Dust extraction units are often the largest consumers of electricity in furniture manufacturing facilities, accounting for up to 40% of total energy costs. In a world where energy prices are rising and requirements for a more sustainable approach to manufacturing have never been more prevalent, choosing the right dust extraction system for your production can help you make substantial strides in improving your businesses’ carbon footprint, whilst reducing your overheads. But, where do you start? We talk to Matt Pearce, Managing Director of TM Machinery and the exclusive AL-KO dust extraction dealer in the UK, to find out…

“The facts are clear. Better dust extraction leads to more efficient woodworking machinery, reduced maintenance costs and enhanced sustainability across the entire workshop and it’s our job at TM Machinery to show you how,” begins Matt. “When investing in a new system, there are some fundamental features that set good quality dust extraction units apart from the rest. We tell our customers to look past the motor size and focus on overall performance.”

Take AL-KO’s compact Power Unit range for example. Each model is designed with an optimised fan housing and features advanced IE3 or IE4 motors, which guarantee 100% air recirculation

without loss of temperature. Why is this important? Matt explains, “It makes big energy savings. Dust extraction is all about moving and filtering air, so how your extraction unit achieves this is key. AL-KO’s Power Units are designed around a revolutionary AL-KO Opti Jet®, a unique, high-performance filter system that offers optimum filter cleaning while using the least amount of compressed air possible, offering both efficient extraction and reduced running costs.”

Matt adds, “When it comes to the best energy efficient dust extraction filters, units that use antistatic polyester needle felt class M filters, like the Power Unit range, will provide longer life, higher levels of filtration efficiency and better air permeability – resulting in optimal machinery performance and reduced energy consumption.

“Additional automatic functions – like AL-KO’s start detection, shut-off gates with automatic activation – can also minimise unnecessary energy use, whilst also helping to increase the life of the filter.”

By choosing respected brands with high build quality, you can be sure that dust extraction units are built to withstand the robust demands of a busy workshop and remain compliant with all UK laws. “AL-KO’s units coincide with EN and DIN standards,” says Matt. “For over 15 years, German law has

“Each model is designed with an optimised fan housing and features advanced IE3 or IE4 motors, which guarantee 100% air recirculation without loss of temperature”

stated that manufacturers must have a maximum exposure rate of 2 mg/m³ in the workplace and AL-KO have continued to focus their research and development in this area to create a complete dust extraction offering that falls well below the UK’s exposure threshold. This cannot be guaranteed when using lesser quality units.”

Matt adds, “For a new generation of workshop and joinery owners, creating a cost-effective, eco-friendly business is an increasingly important goal. With considered machinery choices, you can reduce energy consumption in your business. This, alongside responsibly managing waste material, woodworking workshops and factories can actively participate in creating a greener and more environmentally conscious industry and healthy working environment. Our experienced team can help you on this journey and are always on hand to help you navigate your way through dust extraction.”

Q&A – Aimee Fletcher, Product and Design Manager, EGGER UK

The newly launched EGGER Worktop Collection 24+ has been meticulously crafted to meet the diverse needs of designers, architects, and fabricators, offering a versatile range of highquality worktops that cater to an array of design preferences. We asked Aimee Fletcher, Product and Design Manager at EGGER UK, what we should know about the range.

Can you give us an overview of the new EGGER Worktop Collection 24+?

Developed as part of the International EGGER Decorative Collection 24+, the range comprises 39 carefully chosen decors, in two thicknesses and two profiles. Reproductions in 25 and 38 mm include oak, marble, stone and granite, offering a low maintenance, cost-effective alternative to solid surfaces.

The range focuses on authentic decors and textures that offer affordable alternatives to real materials, but with all the added benefits of laminate.

Tell us a bit about the different thicknesses and formats offered within the range

The popular and versatile 38mm Postformed range features a selection of 23 decors in woodgrain and material decors. For a touch of sophistication, we offer four Feelwood oak decors in a 38mm Square Edged profile and twelve material reproductions in a 25mm Square Edged profile. As a stylish alternative to tiling, matching upstands and splashbacks are available for all decors, creating a coordinated finish that is easy to maintain.

Additionally, matching edging is available for all decors, with 15 worktops featuring matching 18mm Eurodekor Faced Chipboard readily available from UK stock, suitable for door frontals and carcasses. We also offer a 10-year guarantee for all worktops, ensuring they are not only stylish and functional, but also built to last. Simply use an EGGERSeal Adhesive, in conjunction with the EGGER Fitting Guide, provided in the Installation Kit.

What are some of the key trends behind the EGGER Worktop Collection 24+

One prominent trend is naturalinspired designs. We understand the enduring appeal of organic textures and earthy tones, which is why our collection showcases a range of stunning woodgrains and stone-inspired decors. The collection features decors developed with our brand new ST76 plate, which provides a finish almost indistinguishable from real stone, but without the hefty price tag.

Titus expands T-type hinges with two innovative additions

Two innovative new products have been added to the highly successful range of T-type hinges from cabinet hardware expert, Titus. The T-type PressTo offers fast and easy tool-less hinge mounting, while the T-type-i 170 allows cabinet doors to open to a full 170º with an integrated damper. Like all products in the T-type range, the new additions reliably deliver the soft closing action preferred by end users, and are suitable for use with door thicknesses from 15 to 26 mm.

The new T-type PressTo is securely locked to the door simply by pressing on the integrated mounting lever. No tools are needed, and an audible click confirms that the hinge has been properly mounted. This arrangement simplifies hinge installation and saves time, and is equally suitable for factory- or home-assembled products.

Developed to allow full access to cabinet interiors, the T-type-i 170 combines wideangle opening with an integrated damper to ensure smooth, controlled operation. It offers exceptional stability throughout its operating range and provides zero door

“The T-type PressTo offers fast and easy tool-less hinge mounting, while the T-type-i 170 allows cabinet doors to open to a full 170º with an integrated damper”

protrusion at a door opening angle of 90º, making it an ideal choice for use in kitchen units with inner drawers or pull-out systems.

T-type hinges feature the renowned Titus ‘Confident Close’, the consumer-preferred reliable and consistent soft-close damping characterised by late-start deceleration and quiet landing in the last stage of closing as the door leans against the cabinet side. The proprietary Titus multipurpose integrated damping technology is positioned transversal in the hinge cup, ensuring life-long damping with no bounce-back and superior performance. In addition, the hinges are exceptionally tolerant of misalignment and drilling variations. Their unique 3Way tool-less snap-on mounting plate, which offers intuitive hinge-to-plate mounting in three directions, greatly simplifies door installation, especially with tall doors that need four or even five hinges. The unique design of the mounting plate reinforces stability and rigidity while maintaining smooth hinge operation.

Titus T-type hinges have passed FIRA tests for BS 6222-2-2009, Test Level H and can be supplied with cross-mounting plates or with linear mounting plates that simplify both hinge alignment and hingeto-plate attachment.

Fundermax: your choice for sustainable and readily available boards

In the world of interior design and construction, having access to highquality materials that align with sustainability goals is paramount. Enter Fundermax, a brand that stands out not only for its exceptional quality but also for its commitment to environmental responsibility. As an official stockist in the UK, Lawcris is raising its stock levels in anticipation of summer projects, ensuring that customers don’t face shortages when they need these reliable materials. Dean Carroll, Product Development Manager at Lawcris, delves into why Fundermax should be your board of choice and how its availability and sustainability set it apart from other brands ...

“At the core of Fundermax’s appeal is its dedication to sustainability,” Dean explains. “Each board is crafted with 56 meticulously chosen kraft papers, all sourced from 100% recycled kraft paper. What sets Fundermax apart is that they have complete control over this process, as they own their eco-friendly manufacturing site. This ownership ensures transparency and accountability throughout the production chain.

Customers can rest assured knowing exactly what goes into these boards, from the raw materials to the finished product.

“Moreover, Fundermax goes beyond owning just their manufacturing site; they also control the source of their resins. This level of control is crucial because it allows them to maintain consistency in quality across every board. Like a perfectly baked batch of cookies, Fundermax boards offer the same texture and performance every time. This consistency is a hallmark of the brand and a testament to its unwavering commitment to excellence.

“Another compelling reason to choose this compact grade laminate manufacturer, is its efficient distribution network. Unlike other brands that source their products from far-flung locations, Fundermax boards come straight from the heart of Austria. This shorter distance

Pretty in plywood

Kobi by Konk is a new piece of furniture that showcases the very best in contemporary British design.

Commissioned by luxury interior retailer Kobi & Teal, Frome, Somerset, UK, this sideboard is the result of a collaboration between high-end furniture maker, Konk, leading UK timber, decors and panels distributor, James Latham, and pioneering Finnish plywood brand UPM Plywood’s WISA®

Achieving the perfect balance of form and function, Kobi contrasts the attractive, blond tones of UPM Plywood’s signature WISA®-Birch Premium ply with the sultry, smoky shades of Black American Walnut. What immediately strikes the viewer

“I was impressed by WISA®-Birch Premium from the get-go, its quality far surpasses its attractive price point, and there are few alternatives that can match it on the market”

is the furniture’s chic birch ply frame, before the eye is caught by its twin doors in Black American Walnut, scalloped to offer a textured finish and an irresistibly tactile quality. Set on four elegantly turned legs, also in Black American Walnut, with adaptable shelving inside, it’s a stylish statement piece that will enhance any residential interior setting.

Striking a visual balance

Diving deeper into the journey from vision to reality, Konk’s founder, Alex Ratcliffe, says, “The client was open to ideas, but was keen to contrast engineered and solid timber. They wanted to create a sideboard that celebrated the materials used, with

some features interchangeable and others permanent, yet maintaining strength, style, and consistency throughout the piece.”

To emphasise the material contrast, Alex and his team worked on a two-tone design concept. He knew Black American Walnut would play a central role in the project. However, the part of the structural material hung in the balance, leading Konk to approach long-time distribution partner, James Latham, for advice. Having already supplied the former, it recommended WISA®-Birch Premium as the perfect accompanying product, not only to meet the requirements of the brief but to surpass them too.

The strongest supporter

WISA®-Birch Premium is one of the bestregarded premium plywoods available and a go-to material for furniture makers and joiners worldwide. Its neutral, consistent, premium-quality surface makes an ideal base for different treatments such as lacquering, varnishing, and wood staining; perfect for any visually demanding applications and end uses.

“I was impressed by WISA®-Birch Premium from the get-go, its quality far surpasses its attractive price point, and there are few alternatives that can match it on the market,” Alex affirms. “For me, the long grain surface was a massive selling point and, as you can see on the Kobi sideboard the consistency of the finish is nothing short of impressive.”

Salvador SuperPush 150 crosscut is ever popular

The new Salvador SuperPush 150 crosscut saw is proving a popular option across a range of woodworking industries. An evolution in crosscutting, the SuperPush 150 combines the compact form factor of a manual machine with the programmable power of an automatic optimising crosscut saw.

With competitive pricing and customisable specifications, businesses are taking advantage of reduced labour costs, reduced waste, increased productivity, and increased accuracy.

Daltons Wadkin is the sole distributor for Salvador across the UK and Ireland. Managing Director, Alex Dalton, explains some of the key attributes the saw brings. “Firstly, it deskills the crosscutting process. Operators can be trained in minutes. No keyboard, no mouse.

Operation is intuitive using the large 15.6” touchscreen display and dedicated saw cycle buttons. Cutting lists can be quickly programmed at the machine or imported from an office spreadsheet. Secondly, it

“With competitive pricing and customisable specifications, businesses are taking advantage of reduced labour costs, reduced waste, increased productivity, and increased accuracy”

speeds up cutting times while improving accuracy thanks to the heavy-duty, servodriven pusher. It’s win-win!”

As standard, the Savlador SuperPush 150 features an automatic retracting front protection guard, allowing the machine to be front-loaded across the saw-line, making the overall footprint considerably smaller.

The machine can be operated in one of three modes; push, stop or optimisation. Push for working with repeat sizes or standard cutting list, stop for ad-hoc fixed lengths and optimisation for minimising waste from cutting lists.

The stop system is controlled by the latest Salvador optimising algorithm,

powered by a digital servo motor driving a steel-reinforced toothed belt. The stop is continually monitored with real time feedback – if a heavy workpiece knocks the stop during loading it instantly corrects itself ensuring precision cutting every time.

Further options include label printing for piece identification and bar code scanner for quick recall of cutting lists.

Contact sole distributors, Daltons Wadkin, for more information or to arrange a working demonstration on any of the Salvador crosscutting systems.

Mirka launches premium long-life antistatic sanding belt

Mirka is introducing Ultimax® Black, a new abrasive for belt sanding with longlife and antistatic properties, suitable for sanding hard materials and hardwood surfaces, reducing material waste.

Combining a thick, high-quality backing paper with a new silicon carbide grain and patented selective coating material, Ultimax Black delivers a strong, stable performance without breaking, folding or twisting, even in the coarser grits. The high-technology sanding belt’s surface cavities prevent clogging and reduce the temperature of the sanding process while increasing the surface pressure on each single sanding grain. This helps the abrasive stay sharp for longer, contributing to a higher removal rate and a lower scratch pattern.

“Ultimax Black delivers exceptional sanding quality from start to finish,” says Neil Newbrook, business sector manager Wood, Mirka UK. “Its patented manufacturing technology and antistatic properties take belt sanding to the next level in longevity and sanding performance thanks to its strength and stability, achieving consistent finishing without the need to adjust machine pressure over time.” www.mirka.com

Considerable reduction of set-up time with the MARTIN T27 spindle moulder

Efficiency, flexibility, accuracy, reliability – these attributes capture the T27 spindle moulder from MARTIN. Thanks to the practice-oriented design of the modern touch-screen control, the machine can be operated comfortably, quickly and easily despite its diverse capabilities.

Reduced set-up times – increased accuracy

“Set-ups are no longer a matter of trial and error – even the first work piece will be perfect,” says Michael Mühldorfer, Marketing Manager at MARTIN. “In their daily business our customers are challenged with accomplishing tasks faster, yet with better results. The solution lies in user-friendly controller technology that exploits the unique mechanical possibilities of our machines in the best way possible.”

A focus on intuitive and reliable operations

MARTIN offers a user-friendly controller that increases efficiency by reducing set-up times by more than 80%. Every set-up process presents the user with the challenge of moving an existing tool on the machine as quickly as possible into the position required for the next work step. This may still seem comparatively easy when the spindle is positioned vertically, but setting up a tilted spindle can be a major challenge for the operator. Not so on a MARTIN T27.

This is why the T27 controller allows

for input and storage of up to 1000 tools. For each tool, three arbitrarily selectable reference points can be defined. Regardless of the cutting height and depth, the cutting angle is always displayed accurately in relation to the table and fence position. You simply input height, depth and angle and you’re able to sit back and leave everything to the controller. Once the optimum tool position has been found, the setting can be stored. These settings can then be repeated with maximum accuracy as often as needed. The T27 not only quickly and easily saves settings once made for later repetition, but it is also adept at setting up operations that are only needed once.

In addition to the cutting height, cutting depth and cutting angle, the infeed jaw of the fence, the table opening and the height setting of the feed support can be adjusted by the controller depending on how your MARTIN premium spindle moulder is equipped.

A MARTIN patent – electrically adjustable table rings

The electrically adjustable eccentric table rings, which can be variably adapted to tools with diameters of 70 to 250 mm also substantially contribute to reduced set-up times. Minimising the gap between the table and the tool is often a tricky set-up process, yet is very simple if you work on a MARTIN machine!

Time-consuming replacement and adjustment of the standard “drop-in” table

“Thanks to the consistently user-friendly, modern control system, the many mechanical options of the machines can be put to exceptionally beneficial use for the entrepreneur”

rings is a thing of the past. The electrically adjustable table rings help to maximise the contact surface, even for small work pieces.

A moulding fence for maximum precision

In contrast to the obvious performance advantages of the controller, the mechanical advantages of the fence design remain hidden. However, the benefit that this option provides to users is no less important. The fence’s bilateral guides enable an unprecedented level of repeatable accuracy of ± 0.025mm. Even after the fence has been removed from the machine table in seconds, there is no need for time-consuming referencing during dismantling.

Versatile for workshops and industry

The target group for the T27 are companies that focus on individual, flexible and versatile manufacturing. This can be a three- to five-man shop that uses the machine for all moulding operations or large furniture manufacturers that use their spindle moulders as an efficient and flexible supplement to the processing centre.

“Thanks to the consistently user-friendly, modern control system, the many mechanical options of the machines can be put to exceptionally beneficial use for the entrepreneur,” concludes Michael. “Moreover, the machine can be fine-tuned to the specific requirements of the company. This makes MARTIN’s T27 spindle moulder the perfect solution for companies in which efficiency, versatility, accuracy and reliability are crucial.”

Combilift introduces the Combi Safe-Lift

Off the back of its 25-year celebrations, Combilift is anticipating another successful year, full of innovation. One product that the company feels brings great potential for the future is the Combi Safe-Lift. This anti-overload device enables operators to avoid the pitfalls of potential overloading, which can have serious consequences if it occurs.

Forklift operators who are insufficiently aware of the load they are lifting and the risks that come with exceeding the forklift rated capacity not only compromise their own safety, but also place everyone working around them at serious risk.

“The operator can instantly see from the green, amber and red ‘traffic light’ signalling when there is a risk of overloading or when the forks are not fully engaged for example”

There are several factors that can influence a forklift truck to become overloaded and these include load centre, weight of load, lift height and the type of load. The load centre, which is the distance from the face of the fork to the centre of gravity of the load plays a crucial part. The position of the load centre can also vary depending on the type of load being lifted, for example liquid loads or non-uniform loads.

The Combi Safe-Lift incorporates a strain sensor on the mast section and a lift cut-out valve on the hydraulic line to disable lifting if the unit is being potentially overloaded.

There is an audible alarm which warns the operator of an overload situation, and a load moment indicator is fitted to the dashboard in the cab. The operator can instantly see from the green, amber and red ‘traffic light’ signalling when there is a risk of overloading or when the forks are not fully engaged for example, and take appropriate action.

“We offer the Combi Safe-Lift as an option at the moment, but we believe that this simple and cost-effective system should become a standard option on all counterbalance trucks in future,” says MD, Martin McVicar.

“Fitting a straightforward device such as the Combi Safe-Lift is an effective way to reduce risks for the operator and other personnel, and also to avoid product damage as well as costly repairs.”

High-quality fire doors require a top-quality finish, especially when it comes to the vision panel cassettes. When producing vision panel cassettes, the need for an accurate mitre joint cannot be overstated. Accurate mitre cuts reduce the need for further finishing work prior to joining and are key in maintaining the frame’s integrity.

Using the HOFFMANN Dovetail Router to complete the joint is a cost-effective way of completing the process of producing accurate, highquality, vision panel cassettes. Once all the pieces have been mitred (this can be done with a mitre saw or a guillotine, as long as all the 45° angles and the lengths of the workpieces are 100% accurate), the workpieces are transferred to the Hoffmann MU3 for processing the dovetail slots. The Hoffmann Keys are then inserted in the mitre joints to complete the vision panel cassette.

The Hoffmann MU3 Dovetail Router is available in four models:

• MU-3 Entry Level version for the quick and precise routing of dovetail slots

• MU-3 D Digital version, with electronic two-axis display for the adjustable routing depth, as well as the positioning of the centre fence for the routed slot location. It is ideal for high-precision work.

• MU-3 P Pneumatic version for series production and high throughput. Pneumatic workpiece clamping and controlled router feed. The MU-3 P is operated by foot-pedal control.

• MU-3 PD Pneumatic and Digital version – the top machine with the highest operating comfort for a wide range of requirements. Functional features are similar to MU-3 D with a digital two-axis display for the adjustable routing depth as well as the positioning of the centre fence for the routed slot location.

The MU-3 and the MU-3 D have a workpiece thickness capacity of up to 140mm, while in the MU-3 P and MU-3 PD versions, this increases to 170mm.

They offer infinitely adjustable routing depths up to 95mm and protection against break-out of the finished surface. The dualfunction hand lever ensures quick machine cycles when routing smaller workpieces. The scale tapes in the table and the rear fences assist in the quick and precise positioning of the workpieces.

All versions of the new MU-3 routing machine are equipped with a motor carriage which has vernier adjustment for the precise setting of the router cutter and hence the adjustable tension of the joint. www.hoffmann-uk.com

Expelling the myth

Some manufacturers see software as a cost to their business – with great software it’s anything but! According to Derek Brown, RapidSpec managing director, “What will happen with effective software is: it will save time, eliminate errors, be easy to learn and use and generate additional profit.

“The purpose of RapidSpec software is to make money for the manufacturers. The better the software, the more money you make. In fact, on its lease scheme, RapidSpec guarantees a return of at least three times your investment within six months.”

How does RapidSpec make you money?

“By reducing the amount of work involved in quoting and fulfilling a project. RapidSpec automatically prices door sets, creates cutting lists for all the materials you need for any project, and forces you to do everything right! It also automatically produces the drawings you need, so that your customers and your team can see and know exactly what they’re going to get or make.

“As a manufacturer, you have to know what you need to buy to create bills of materials. Our leading-edge software does

this automatically and thus cuts out some of your estimators’ work and time. Even if you already have some kind of system in place, RapidSpec can give you even greater productivity. Raising productivity is of course exactly the same as increasing profit: there’s no difference!

“In most fire door manufacturing companies, there will be several staff that are responsible for generating sales and processing orders into bills of materials and shop floor instruction. The proportion of sales/administration staff in most manufacturers is 20-30 % of total staff. So, what happens if your software increases the productivity of the relevant department by 25% (which is the norm for RapidSpec)?

“Well, you create 25% more quotations in the same number of hours. To convert that increase in productivity to hard cash, use the following calculation. Imagine you have two sales/admin staff. Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours these two staff work and divide by four (25%). Example 2 x 40 (hours) x £50 per hour (Charge Out Rate) = (£1000) per week or roughly £50,000 per year. An interesting question here is what additional work has been done to create this considerable

increase in profit? Answer, if the software is doing the work, or just making the job easier and quicker, nothing. RapidSpec is easy to set up and easy to administer. Customers love the way it transforms part of the whole manufacturing process.

“There are now several versions of RapidSpec available including: ‘RapidSpec FlashQuote’, this is a new version of RapidSpec which reduces input time and produces quotations for doors and door sets with frames, hinges and locks. After the initial project set-up (a five-minute job), it will deliver automatic pricing, quotation and door set drawings, all in less than a minute, freeing up time for your team to create more quotations in the time they have available. Yes, you’re actually specifying a customer door every time in less than a minute!

RapidSpec RapidRout

“This is another new version of our brilliant software which produces barcodes to be applied to the top edge of doors. Scanning the barcode at the CNC machine automatically generates a 3D drawing in CAD and generates GCODE (machine language) to directly program any CNC machine.

“Daily operating requires no programmer. The main benefit is a finished product which, from purchase order to production, needs no manual input, eliminates errors, eliminates waste and significantly increases output from any CNC machine.

“RapidSpec provides manufacturers with quick quotations and automatic drawings: they’re right first time. So, don’t look at RapidSpec as a cost; look at it as the easiest way any fire door manufacturer can increase profit.”
