As the feeling of summer has eventually kicked into gear for most parts of the country, being a British furniture or joinery manufacturer seems a pretty decent place to be. Of course the challenges remain, and it is still a highly-competitive landscape driven by price – and, increasingly, by service. The composition of British manufacturing has changed significantly over the last 20 years. Automation, software, regulations, health and safety, employment regulations – these and many more besides are obstacles that all businesses have had to come to terms with. Many firms, of course, have not managed this transition, but those that have are on a more solid footing and better prepared to meet the challenges of the market. A new report published by Plimsoll says that 67% of British furniture manufacturers grew sales over the last 12 months. The study looked at the largest 887 companies operating in the industry and concluded that their average growth rate was 12%, with sales increasing by just under 7%. Also noteworthy was that the average sales per employee last year was £103,000 – but that some firms are reporting sales per employee of £155,000. The fact that the top 887 businesses are, largely speaking, healthy and growing at a decent rate, is very good news. A good place to identify how your business can become more efficient and potentially more profitable is W16-Elements, the biggest event in our sector for machinery, equipment, materials and components. According to the organiser, this year’s edition will be the biggest to date. There will also be a number new initiatives, such as an innovation zone, a best practice zone and a competition zone. In this issue, we present the first part of our exhaustive preview, and hear about what a number of exhibitors will be showing. Of course, Furniture & Joinery Production will be exhibiting at the show again – visitors will be able to collect a copy of both August and September’s issues from our booth as well as grabbing a refreshment and the opportunity to talk to members of the team. We look forward to seeing you there …

800th real kitchen hit for PWS’ Second Nature website PWS’ Second Nature website had a resounding hit as a new milestone was reached when its 800th Real Kitchen was published. The landmark project is an impressive contemporary design by The Kitchen People of Lindfield. No stranger to Real Kitchens, this is the company’s 12th project and, as with its earlier designs, is expected to be popular with visitors to the site. Comments Sarah Henshall, designer at The Kitchen People: “Real Kitchens is a powerful way for us to promote our design expertise and service. As a company we have embraced this great opportunity offered by PWS and have built up a gallery of classic and contemporary designs catering for a range of tastes and budgets. We

have been delighted to win the Real Kitchen of the month competition on four occasions and privileged that our latest design has coincided to be the 800th project.” Real Kitchens stemmed from findings of extensive consumer focus group, carried out by PWS several years ago and continues to offer benefits to the numerous retailers who submit projects for publication. Real Kitchens create inspirational showcases of designs that deliver quality leads, and subsequent sales, to the retailers, with this area of the website being the 2nd most popular destination of the site. BA Clic Components – a new company and a new concept Following detailed negotiations since December, BA Components has finalised the acquisition of the Uniclic for furniture business from Unilin in March. The Uniclic for furniture technology, which has been developed by Unilin over the last five years, allows panels to be joined without any tools, with a patented click joint. BA Clic Components signed a license agreement with Unilin for the Uniclic for furniture technology along with the ongoing and future production of all Clic components and ClicBox to the existing Unilin customer base in the UK and Ireland. BA Clic Components will

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 4

now be responsible for the total sales, promotion and marketing activities of Clic Components and ClicBox actively promoting the product range through current and new distributors and stockists. Unilin made the strategic choice to hand over the sales and production to further focus on developing new technologies and improving existing core product ranges across a broad spectrum of market areas. The new company will operate out of newly-purchased factory premises in Rotherham, South Yorkshire where a dedicated facility and workforce has been established and the very latest production equipment installed

and commissioned to progress the ClicBox brand. BA Clic Components has just launched Join the Kitchen Cabinet Revolution with BA ClicBox and is confident that this modern concept

and innovative product range will appeal to many markets – including merchant groups, kitchen fitters, dealers and builders – and prove to be a “revolution” in the kitchen manufacturing and construction industry. BA ClicBox has numerous benefits. It is easy to assemble, has fewer components, is easy to transport, handle and get to installation sites, takes up 69% less van space, can be assembled on site five times faster than normal flat-pack cabinet, requires no tools, glues or fittings and is stronger than a traditional cabinet. “It really is a rigid in a box,” says BA. 07738 904127 baclicbox.com

Blum reports 6.5% revenue increase for 2015/16 – another year of growth for the Austrian fittings manufacturer Thanks to innovative products, an international market presence, consistent investments worldwide and highly flexible employees, the Blum Group has once again seen a revenue increase during the financial year 2015/16, despite very different performances by the individual markets. The family enterprise reports an increase of 6.5% compared to the previous year. With a revenue increase of 6.5% to €1,656.17m, fittings manufacturer Blum concludes its financial year 2015/16 that ended on 30th June. Innovative products, its international market presence and consistent investments all mean that the company headquartered in Höchst, Austria, can celebrate a solid increase in revenue. 50% of the company turnover was generated within the EU –15% in the US. Diverging developments on different markets In Western Europe, all markets developed in a positive manner for Blum in the financial year 2015/2016. In Eastern Europe, the fittings manufacturer is also pleased with the way business has developed in the EU member states. In Russia and in Turkey, on the other hand, revenue has decreased drastically due to economic sanctions and political instability. Business in North America continued to flourish, while the tense economic situation made itself felt very strongly in South America, particularly in Brazil. In the Asia-Pacific region, most markets continued to grow, and Blum also registered growth figures in the Middle East and in Africa. Employees – the basis of success “The high level of motivation of our worldwide team and the excellent co-operation of all departments

Blum CEO, Gerhard E Blum With innovative fittings solutions in all three product groups – lifts, hinges, pull-outs – Blum reflects current design trends and organisations within our group are an essential building block of our success,” says CEO Gerhard E Blum, summing up the fundamental importance that Blum attaches to its employees. During the past financial year, Blum had on average 6849 employees worldwide, an increase of 334 compared to the previous year. On 1st September this year, 80 new apprentices will start their technical training at Blum Austria. This means that from September 2016, the Blum Group will employ 306 apprentices, 13 of whom are based in the US. Investments during the financial year 2015/16 During the past financial year, the Blum Group has invested a total of €173.64m. At the Austrian site, a three-storey manufacturing building and a fully automated high-bay warehouse at plant four in Bregenz, Austria will commence operation in September. An additional highbay warehouse is currently under construction and is scheduled to be completed by spring 2017. Construction work for a new,

eighth plant in Dornbirn, Austria has already commenced. The plan is for a stamping centre with a high-bay and strip steel warehouse to be operational by summer 2018. In March 2016, Blum started to build an office and warehouse complex in Greece, scheduled for completion by the end of this year. A new central warehouse was opened in China, and projects to expand the high-bay warehouses in Australia and Poland are set to commence this autumn. With its commitment to renowned environmental networks and the use of alternative forms of energy in manufacturing and building activities, Blum always strives to use resources carefully and responsibly, in all areas of the company. New products and services During the financial year of 2015/16, the company has retained its strategic focus on the development of new products and services. In line with the current design trend that focuses on kitchens and furniture pieces with handle-less fronts, Blum offers sophisticated solutions in all three product groups

– lifts, hinges and pull-outs. This includes box systems and runner systems for wooden drawers, but also the lift and hinge systems. The new motion technology Tip-On Blumotion combines mechanical opening with gentle, quiet closing and was a feature in many of the show kitchens presented at this year’s Milan fFurniture fair. Blum’s product range is completed by different services such as the Online Product Configurator that allows users to find the right fittings in a speedy and uncomplicated manner, or the mobile app for manufacturers and fitters that facilitates dimension calculations and product adjustments. The service range for customers and partners with its focus on assembly, marketing and logistics is expanded continuously. Outlook for the upcoming financial year 2016/17 It is difficult to assess what the upcoming financial year has in store. The problems arising from the sanctions imposed on Russia and the effects of the unstable political situation in Turkey will continue to make themselves felt. Blum hopes that the economic situation in North America and the Asia-Pacific reason will remain stable. In South America, particularly in Brazil, there are few indications of economic recovery. However, Blum remains convinced that their family enterprise will be able to make a positive impact during the financial year 2016/17, based on innovative products, international market presence and professional staff. blum.com

Felder Group marks 60 years of earnest endeavour Six decades of attention to detail transforms a modest specialist firm for combination machines to a premier, professional manufacturer and supplier of a full realm of furniture, joinery and panel production machinery. In July, family, friends, colleagues and customers came together in the Hall in Tirol, Austria to celebrate the Felder Group’s 60-year milestone. In 1956 Johann Felder, together with his wife Gertaud, founded his eponymous company. Strong, down-to-earth and always ahead of the times, with traditional values, pioneering machine concepts and high quality products – the machine engineering company developed in the following years from a specialist firm for combination machines to a complete supplier of professional woodworking machinery for workshops, business and industry. In the formative years, Felder’s woodworking machines developed steadily with a premises move in 1961, exports began to grow as the business began to take shape. In 1965, the production capacity was increased with the purchase of Felder’s first milling centre. With the upgraded BU5, Felder ventured successfully into the German market. The BU6, BU7 and BU8 series followed and became established in international markets and the numerous patents ensured the developmental edge of Felder machines. In 1970 Felder released Felder HT onto the market, a new heavyduty combination machine series, achieving outstanding results, especially amongst carpenters. In 1979 Felder took the step into CNC technology and invested in its first CNC milling centre. This was one of the last investments to be made in the Absam location. Success requires expansion and at the location in Absam this was no longer possible. It was for this reason that in 1982 the company moved with its 65 employees to the new headquarters in Hall in Tirol, where the company is still to today. With the new production possibilities the next Felder milestone came in 1990. The world’s first combination machine with a sliding table – made by Felder – was presented. The position of market leader in combination machines was strengthened with the launch of the BF6 range. Simultaneously, Felder released the first solo machines for professional use in the industrial range. It was also in this segment that within a short period of time the K6 panel saw celebrated its breakthrough onto the international market.

In 1993 Felder opened its new EURO logistics centre which was pioneering in its sector. The the first Felder branch office was also established in 1993 and the office in Upper Austria opened its doors in 1995. In 1997 Felder brought the new brand Hammer to life and it soon asserted itself with high quality yet affordable woodworking machines proving highly successful against cheap products from the Far East. The success enabled further expansion of production and assembly in 1999. The new

assembly hall 2 increased the capacity by 30%. In 2001 a further brand was introduced, Format-4, a premium brand for the highest requirements in business and industry completed the product range of the Felder Group in the professional segment. In the years to follow, the product range was expanded to include CNC processing centres, edgebanders, beam saws and heated veneer presses. The new Format-4 models were awarded internationally-recognised design awards such as the Adolf-Loos-Prize in 2004 and the IF-Design-Award in 2003 and 2009. In just a short time the machines were convincing professional users in business and industry. In 2000 the company, Johann

Hundreds of guests celebrate with Felder

Felder, changed from being a registered sole trader to a limited partnership with Johann’s wife Gertraud, daughter Elisabeth and sons Hansjörg and Martin Felder all having a share of the family company, Felder KG. With the beginning of the new millennium, the new powder coating facility was built and brought into operation. Achieving the 80% export limit required renewed expansion of the logistics centre, which opened in 2005 – after just eight months of construction. In 2007, with the extension of assembly hall 7 and of hall roof 4.5, the production area was increased by 11,300m². 2009 saw the first CNC and edgebander machines – developed and produced entirely in Hall in Tirol – leave the production line, and from 2010, they were displayed in the company’s newly-built exhibition and technology centre in Hall. In 2012, the Felder Group caused a sensation in the planing machine market with the introduction of the revolutionary Silent-Power spiral cutterblock, underlining its innovative strength. In 2013 and 2014, Felder took part at the Ligna and HolzHandwerk exhibitions with 1000m² floor space, presenting around 100 machines, including many innovations such as the Format-4 CNC five-axis technology. With the expansion of production hall 1 in 2015, Felder increased its efficiency and was able to add a 1300m² apprentice workshop – a top quality training framework for its trainees with high quality standards. The third generation of Felders have now joined the family company and the Felder Group, with around 550 employees with company headquarters in Hall, is one of the leading worldwide suppliers of woodworking machines for hobby, business and industrial use. More than 250 sales centres in 72 countries sell over 150 models from the Hammer, Felder and Format-4 brands. Today, Felder is classed as one of the leading worldwide suppliers of woodworking machines – a business that is growing by sticking to its core prinicples of respecting traditional values, pioneering machine concepts and creating high quality products which add efficiency and accuracy to customers’ businesses. felder-group.com

V-Marq – certifying the origin of manufacture Is it consumers or manufacturers that are driving the current trend to name the place of manufacture of a product? It is true that consumers are looking to identify the origin of products to help them make a purchasing decision, equating origin with quality, safety, environmental and ethical factors. And it is equally true that manufacturers are realising this and are using their distinct place of manufacture as a positive brand attribute, drawing on its associations with the aforementioned factors. How do consumers know that a product is actually made where a manufacturer claims it is? And how do manufacturers prove that their marketing claims in respect to origin are robust? The answers could come from a new certification scheme that has just been introduced by the independent management systems certification body and sustainability assurance provider, Lucideon CICS. Under the V-Marq scheme, Lucideon CICS will audit where a product is manufactured, awarding successful companies a V-Marq badge that can be displayed on products and packaging. Shaun Bainbridge, director at CICS, explains why the scheme was introduced: “There are a myriad of origin labels around the world, from

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 10

‘made in’ to ‘designed in’ badges. Few, if any of them, have an audit scheme in place that verifies the origin of manufacture. “Consumers don’t like to be fooled – they often rely on the origin of a product to make a purchasing

decision. Under our scheme, a company can prove its marketing claims by having an independent, third-party audit.” What if a company is not currently using location of manufacture as a brand attribute? Christoph Geppert, MD of award-winning branding and marketing agency Grain Creative, thinks that where a product is made will play an important role in building the brands of the future. He says: “As brands look to differentiate themselves in an evercompetitive global marketplace, using manufacturing origin will become a critical and necessary brand attribute.” The V-Marq scheme evolved following a call from UK tableware

manufacturers that wanted to differentiate themselves from overseas competitors. It is perhaps therefore fitting that the first company to be awarded the V-Marq was Steelite International plc. 64 of its patterns, nearly thirteen hundred products in total, have been certified as being made in Stoke-onTrent, UK. Steelite International’s audited products can be seen on the online register at www.v-marq.com. In addition to being put onto the register, audited manufacturers will receive the V-Marq to use on products, packaging and promotional materials and will also be featured in PR campaigns. v-marq.com

Ney launches slimline soft-close drawer box Drawer boxes have always been manufactured with 16mm board in mind – the most common board thickness in Europe and the rest of the world. However in the UK the preference for many years has been 18mm board, causing the obvious issue with manufacturing drawers, a solution which Ney says has not been tackled by any of the drawer box manufacturers. In 2014, Ney released the first drawer system, Starbox, suitable for 18mm board and it was an overnight success. In recent times the trend is for a slimline, contemporary designed drawer, but the manufacturers, however, once again only offer a 16mm option. But now there is an alternative, KuBox from Ney, the only slimline drawer for UK manufacturers taking an 18mm panel. Not only is the KuBox advantageous to the end user, but is of huge benefit to the manufacturer. Product manager, David Canning, explains: “The KuBox drawer is the second product from our eco drawer range designed specifically for manufacturers in

The slide supplied with the KuBox has an improved soft-close mechanism and there is a built-in stabiliser running on a synchronisation cog that reduces any lateral movement that improves the longevity of the runner/drawer and improves the overall action of the slide

the UK, unlike our competitors who aim at the European market. Our eco drawers are made to house an 18mm panel, not 16mm. “This can help the manufacturer in one of two ways. Firstly, the customer is either routing an 18mm panel to 16mm on every single drawer, a long process that is easily removed by using KuBox and Starbox. Or, secondly, the customer is buying 16mm board in addition to 18mm. “The customer can therefore consolidate his board thickness to 18mm, which will reduce his stock levels giving more space in the workshop and the bases and backs can then be made out of 18mm scrap material. In both examples the customer is saving money using drawers from Ney.” David goes on to explain: “In October 2015, Ney had the opportunity to release the Kubox for 16mm board but quickly decided against the idea as it would not be offering the customer anything different to alternative products on the market. “We know how popular the 18mm board option is after the success of our Starbox so we went to our supplier and discussed the changes we required and the improvements we wanted for the slide. Within six months we had KuBox. We are confident we have one of the best slimline drawer systems on the market – this was reinforced during our April in-house exhibition as we displayed the KuBox for the first time and it went down a treat, so much so we took quite a few advanced orders. “It was quite clear that our decision to delay the release of the KuBox was the right one and it was very pleasing to secure sales before our first delivery had even landed in Coventry. Our pricing policy for KuBox is extremely competitive offering our customers great value for money without compromising quality,” concludes David. 024 7630 8100 ney.co.uk

The KuBox from NEY is the new slim line drawer that has recently become the trend in kitchens due to its contemporary look. The biggest advantage to the manufacturer using KuBox is the board requirement for the base and back being 18mm. Buying extra 16mm board just for drawers or routing 18mm board to 16mm is now a thing of the past. The KuBox is from the same family as the very popular Starbox, our standard kitchen drawer which also takes 18mm for the base and back.

Kitchen using Roble Vainilla Jazz

Studio Collection – a range of authentic surfaces The Studio Collection is one of the most innovative and cutting-edge ranges included in the wide portfolio of products that Finsa offers in the UK market. This new generation of surfaces provides a great variety of possibilities upon carrying out architecture, interior design or furniture projects. This new generation of melamines embossed in register or with a deep texture is a reminder that nature will always remain as the primary source of inspiration. This selection of décors also uses music as a reference, because surfaces, like music, convey feelings and fill up spaces, accompanying us along the different stages of our lives. That is the reason why the designs that make up the collection are all named after musical styles – Jazz, Blues, Tango and Rock&Roll. This range combines excitement and

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 14

innovation, inviting the discovery of a new generation of high-performance, deeper and more authentic surfaces. All the décors included in the Studio Collection are melamine embossed in register or have a deep texture, which offers elegant surfaces that are silky to touch. The Jazz Oak Range combines the versatility, flexibility and functionality of industrial materials, with the naturalness, warmth and elegance of wood. The level of perfection achieved in replicating the design and finishing, combined with the coincidence of both printed pattern and texture, endow these materials with the required depth and gloss to perceive this new range as natural wood. In fact, it seems to be removed directly from its environment and brought to the hands of designers and industrialists to transform it just

like the old carpenters would work wood in all its splendour. Four oaks comprise this range: Roble Canela, Roble Choco, Roble Humo and Roble Vainilla. Likewise, inspired by the grain of oak wood, the Blues Range is the deepest texture in the Studio Collection. Blues provides two solid colours, White SR209 and the grey Gris Coco, which offer a result similar to that of a lacquered open pore oak surface. Besides, it includes two oak décors Roble Chicago and Roble Memphis, which are clearly enhanced when combined with the Blues finishing. The Tango Range is the result of the merger between design and technology, with texture and wood being united in perfect harmony in these four ash décors. This new wood texture embossed in register is noted for its elegant crowns and genuine wood details. The four tones

of the collection – Fresno Rosario, Fresno Plata, Fresno Pampa and Fresno Patagonia – breathe new life into this classic style. Finally, the Rock&Roll texture combines the distinctive features of various materials such as wood, stone and textiles into a single surface. This makes it an extremely versatile texture, which seamlessly blends into widely different designs. This range includes two oak décors – Roble Niagara and Roble Iguazu – apart from a pine – Pino Sacramento – and Urban Loft, an abstract design. These 16 décors, combined with the deep texture and embossed in register technology open a wide range of possibilities when

designing furniture, interior design or architecture projects. In addition, the Studio Collection has been certified by an external laboratory as an antibacterial product, which increases the applications of these surfaces, such as kitchens or clinics. The Studio Collection is distributed in the UK market by Lawcris and IDS and readers can check out the videos about the Studio Collection on Finsa UK’s Youtube channel. 0151 651 2400 / www.finsa.com 0113 217 7177 / www.lawcris.co.uk (Rock&Roll, Tango and Blues ranges) 08457 298298 / www.idsurfaces.co.uk (Jazz range)

Bosch announces new generation of cordless screwdrivers for professionals Bosch is launching a new generation of 18V cordless screwdrivers – a dynamic series and a robust series. All four models have new functions which offer a higher level of comfort for professionals such as carpenters, electricians, plumbers and heating installers. The dynamic series range of tools combines compact design with high performance and covers the GSR 18 V-EC Professional cordless screwdrivers and GSB 18 V-EC Professional cordless combi drills. These are the first Bosch cordless screwdrivers or combi drills of this class to have brushless motor technology. The cordless screwdrivers and combi drills have a newly designed precision coupling which is unique in the market. An electronic control system detects when this coupling is overloaded and stops the motor in order to avoid over-tightening when fastening screws. This prevents the loud noise caused by over-tightening, minimises vibrations, and causes less wear to the material and coupling. This,

in turn, results in reduced wear and tear and a longer service life for the tool and accessories. All screwdrivers also come equipped with a robust 13mm solid metal drill chuck. The Softgrip handle has a grooved structure, meaning that it is easier to hold, especially when working overhead or in tight, hard-

to-reach spaces. Two LEDs alert tradesmen when the tool stops: a white LED to show that the tool has a blockage and a red LED when the tool is overheating. The proven KickBack Control function – previously known as Electronic Rotation Control – an exclusive feature of the dynamic series, gives users full control, even for the

toughest screwdriving and drilling jobs. The integrated sensor detects sudden tool blockages such as foreign objects in the metal, wood or brickwork and shuts down the motor within a fraction of a second. This prevents unexpected kickback of the tool and, therefore, can reduce the risk of injury. bosch-pt.com

BioGraphy, PWS’ new modern kitchen brand, features five distinctive themes, including the colourful Eclectic Fusion style. Taking its cue from the trend towards personalisation, this look is all about having the flexibility to create a dynamic, personal statement with a kitchen that’s functional, expressive and echoes the energy of a busy home. BioGraphy is more than a product range, it introduces a clear back story and a new ethos to selling with a targeted approach and Eclectic Fusion reflects the growing consumer enthusiasm and drive for individuality in interiors, delivering a style that’s inspired, creative and individual. Comments Graeme Smith, senior designer at PWS, says: “The feedback from designers and retailers on BioGraphy has been overwhelmingly positive, with the constant message that the range is perfectly pitched in terms of versatility and choice. designs, injected with individuality and a colourful twist.” The growth in popularity of matt finishes adds a new dimension to colour mixes in the kitchen enabling designers to introduce vivid bursts of colour without overwhelming the space with the finish creating a softer aesthetic than gloss. BioGraphy has been developed to offer maximum design flexibility and the frontal line-up includes four full ranges with a palette of 20 colours, in both matt and gloss, spanning the spectrum from lighter neutrals of almond and cashmere to stronger tones of umber and graphite. Additionally, a range of feature doors, including reclaimed oak and character graphite, allow designers to add further individuality to their projects. The order process for BioGraphy is simple and straightforward with easy online ordering through PWS’ TradeZone system or its customer services department. Makita’s clever MakPac range now has trolleys, storage trays, drill and bit sets Makita’s useful MakPac storage cases are supplied with many of the 600-plus products available in the portfolio but can also be bought independently and clipped together to make a sturdy and secure travelling pack to carry tools and accessories. To complement this ingenious case system Makita has introduced a two-wheeled folding trolley, the TR000000001, which will carry a variety of MakPac cases, with their contents, to a maximum load of 125kg. It is recommended that this is limited to 60kg if stairs are to be negotiated. The handle pushes down into the frame and the forward carry base folds up to reduce the trolley to a convenient and compact size which will fit easily into a van or in the workshop. An adjustable webbing strap secures the stacked MakPac cases to the trolley while the large diameter ABS moulded wheels allow easy movement even over rough terrain on site. A new four-wheel deck trolley, the P-83886, is also now available

which is ideal to create a movable tool stack for use in the workshop or on smooth floors on site. Lockable wheels keep this trolley stable and it will carry a load of up to 100kg with ease. Further innovative elements for the MakPac system include new divider insert trays for convenient storage of hardware, components and accessories. One tray has coloured compartments for quick and easy identification of frequentlyused items. An open tool box is also available for storing larger frequently-used items. Three new drill and bit sets have been introduced to the popular Makita accessory range and are supplied in moulded trays within type one MakPac cases. These include 66 piece, 69 piece and 71 piece sets that carry a variety of HSS drill bits, wood drills, hex shank flats and a comprehensive selection of 25 and 50mm screw bits, nutsetters, quick change ¼in hex shank and magnetic bit holder. These useful kits are available from Makita’s distributor network now. makitauk.com

If you’re looking for the latest design ideas to incorporate into your projects, Elements, the UK’s newest dedicated furniture suppliers show, is an event you will not want to miss …

Decorative Elements The industrial look is gathering pace. But this time, unlike its cold, clinical renaissance in the Nineties, organic materials are being presented in their purest form. Architectural lines, minimalist design and thin frames are being presented in combination with rusted metal décors and untreated woods that bring a sense of warmth and individuality to the latest trend. Tactile qualities are rising in importance with décor experts incorporating soft textures like leather, linen and wool into their collections to create strong designs that exude personality and the individuality today’s consumers crave. “Your senses are key when specifying a product. You need to be able to have a connection with something to truly savour it,” comments Simon Mundy, director of Mundy Veneer. Across the spectrum, this trend is being interpreted with subtle wood grains with deeply embossed, synchronised textures you can both see and feel. Décors with floral effects, knotholes and simulated painted wood are features visitors will find on the stands of David Clouting and Kronoswiss. Botanical features are growing in importance, abstract art is finding its place in the most recent décor designs, and among the most recent plain coloured surfaces to emerge,

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 26

they will find anti-fingerprint supermatts and high glosses as well as anti-bacterial décors with a range of applications from residential kitchens to hospital and carehome projects. On the stands of exhibitors like Döllken, part of the Surteco décor group, and Ostermann, they will find novel ways to edge worksurfaces, counter tops and furniture pieces, adding both character and uniqueness to inspire new design ideas. Decorative hardware is taking its lead from the world of haute couture by embracing leather and textiles for added style. Highly textured and rustic

finishes from Finesse Design and Crofts and Assinder and the use of deeply coloured metals like brass, bronze and copper, add charisma and warmth to the revived industrial theme. The latest trends focus on materials, shapes and tones that work holistically with one another. Joseph Kim from the design team of Korean giant, LG Hausys, explains the latest trend: “It focuses on things that complement each other – natural things, colours like soil, faded peach, beige, grey – colours that can easily

take on other natural, richer colours like sky blue and grey. The industry is stepping away from vivid single tones. Instead, the key is colour gradations that bring the outside in.” LG Hausys’ latest collections can be found on the David Clouting stand. Earthy hues, soft pastel shades and coordinated unicolours fit perfectly and with the announcement that Rose Quartz and Serenity have been selected as Colours of the Year 2016 by the Pantone Colour Institute, designers are flocking to insightful décor producers and edging giants such as Ostermann and Hranipex to find their perfect match for the must-have colours of the moment. Both will present their latest ideas at Elements. Ronan Haslette, MD of wood veneer specialist and Elements exhibitor, Merena adds: “Trends are constantly changing and it’s important to keep abreast of this. Elements is guaranteed to bring ideas to life and show visitors just how dynamic wood can be. It will open up endless design possibilities and bring the beauty of wood to life. Why wouldn’t you want to be a part of it?” To see these trends and more for yourself, Elements will be will be taking place from the 2nd-5th October 2016 at the NEC. wexhibition.co.uk/elements @Elements_Expo

Salone del Mobile 2016 took place in Milan earlier this year in April and remains the international benchmark showcase for furnishing and design. More than 300,000 professional attendees from over 160 countries took the opportunity to come and cast their eyes over the latest products being showcased by more than 2,400 exhibitors this year. At the exhibition real innovations within the industry are presented, those pieces destined to show both the history and the future market of furniture. New trends are created at the Salone, new talents are recognised and positions and strategies are consolidated. Movac is able to – through innovation with the Sayerlack brand - pass these trends onto our customers. Non-coloured natural woods were matched with very light warm coloured stained hues such as Honey or Oak. Very dark hues such as Wenge and Dark Walnut and especially Oak, are matched with softer neutral painted colours. Painted woods are coated in mainly greys and neutral colours with earthy tones such as Dove Grey, Clay, Lead, Concrete, Anthracite, Ecru, Earth and Sand being the most prominent.

Material trends Oak remains one of the main woods which was used on furniture on many of the stands but this year also saw the fairly frequent use of Canaletto Walnut (or Italian Black Walnut) and Walnut. Canaletto Walnut was used in furniture with a matt zero gloss natural lacquer, which makes the wood look like it hasn’t been stained or coated. The matt natural effect Walnut also proved popular for bathroom furniture manufacturers.

Amongst the new solid colours for this year we find Oil Blue, which can be found as a cleaner version such as Peacock and in a lighter version such as Baby Blue. Whatever your coating requirements ensure that you contact Movac and ‘Unleash your colour.’

Coating trends As for pigmented coatings systems, this year the presence was well below that of the transparent systems. High gloss was back and present with many

Weinig and Holz-Her combine to deliver the next generation to W16 Weinig – a technology leader in standard machines for planing and profiling, and Holz-Her – the high quality panel processing machine specialist will be showing its latest innovations as part of the Weinig Group’s presence across three stands around M810 at this year’s W16 exhibition. Weinig at W16 In 2004, Weinig began a new era for planing and profiling with the introduction of the Powermat series. Now, Weinig’s next generation is the all-new Powermat 700 which sets the highest standards for four-sided processing with the most userfriendly moulder on the market.

The new Powermat series underlines Weinig’s position as the technology leader in standard machines for planing and profiling. For workshops, the new Powermat 700 entry model ensures production in Weinig quality and with maximum profitability, regardless of the batch size. The combination of proven technology and innovation offers a future-proof investment and enables all woodworking professionals to gain the necessary edge over the competition to help ensure longterm success in their markets. CNC flexibility is key In solid wood manufacturing today, flexibility is the key. Whether

the user is switching from making A energy-rated timber windows to creating workpieces with complex shapes, Weinig’s Multirex CNC uses the very latest technology to make easy work of the most challenging manufacturing, opening up new production potential. Weinig’s long understanding of the changing needs of solid timber processing makes all the difference. The Multirex CNC features innovative and robust clamping technology specifically developed to guarantee the precise machining of solid timber components. Open software architecture means that no ongoing licence fees are needed which might restrict future choice and company development. The ideal processing centre for any business that needs flexibility combined with economy, the Multirex is unique in its price category. Holz-Her at W16 At W16, Holz-Her will feature the latest in its range of vertical CNC machining centre solutions, the Holz-Her Evolution 7405. With a machine footprint of less than 5m2, an easy-to-use interface, and a patent-pending four-sided milling facility, the Holz-Her Evolution’s versatility and flexibility makes machining cambered parts such as furniture fronts and counter tops easy and fast. Precise complete machining on all four workpiece edges as well as the surface allows panels to be formatted completely, resulting

in perfect workpieces, grooved and profiled on all edges – patent pending. Upgrade to the 7.5kW HSK spindle with tool-changer for six tools, and the machine also allows profile milling, point thinning and engraving with automatic toolchange. The vacuum-based clamping system (patent pending) is gentle on material and being equipped with software-controlled suction cup positioning with hole recognition, workpieces with lengths of up to 1500mm can be machined on all sides without re-clamping. This guarantees extremely short cycle times – up to 35% shorter machining cycles – and maximum precision, even on long parts. Effortless edgebanding with a PURfect finish In response to customer demand for fine to zero glue lines, all HolzHer edgebanders are capable of delivering a fine glue line as standard. From the smallest edgebanders to the largest production solution, each comes with Holz-Her’s unique and award-winning Glu Jet system as standard, catering for every size and type of business. Be it high gloss or solid wood edging, the system is both flexible and versatile and comes with a three year warranty. This is industrial technology for all – you can now process PUR glue as standard, but without the hassle. As the benchmark for professional cabinetmakers, most manufacturers would use PUR, but not all machinery can cope with it. With the Glu Jet ready to use in under four minutes with EVA or PUR, Holz-Her’s unique system is the

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 37

right solution for any edgebanding requirements. Program selection allows the machine to be set up without even opening the hood, so it is ready for production immediately. But it does not stop there – with the new Holz-Her Lumina series comes an option for the LTronic system, a laser edging unit from Holz-Her which is “unbeatable” in terms of speed and cost efficiency. The Near Infrared Radiation (NIR) module in Holz-Her’s LTronic unit transfers heat energy quickly and precisely to the specific point required making it ideal for activation of function layers on laser edging. Two different NIR modules are available – the standard module for edge heights up to 23mm, the optional NIR+ module for edge heights up to 45mm. It is ready to use as soon as it is switched on – there is no heatup time or any heat-up phases during the machining process. In addition, the complete system operates absolutely silently – a huge advantage over other noisy systems. With the integrated protective plate on the NIR module only needing to be briefly cleaned just once a week, the system is a pioneer in terms of energy efficiency. 01235 557600 weinig.co.uk holzher.co.uk

MB Maschinenbau presents its brush sanding options to the UK market MB Maschinenbau from Germany produces a wide range of sanding machines for wood and wood composites, based on brush technology. The spectrum covers both automated solutions like through-feed sanding machines for panels and profiles, as well as joinery machines with a wide field of usage. The programme is enlarged by automation, material handling and glue application technology that are particularly applied in wooden window production. For the first time, MB has decided to introduce its patented Roba Tech 1300 to the British market presenting it at W16 taking place this October in Birmingham. According to MB, the impressive Roba Tech is a brush sanding machine which operates completely differently from all comparable machines of this type. MB says that the main idea of the Roba Tech principle is to avoid the main disadvantage of known drum-based brush sanding machines: those who normally work with sanding drums have only a very small area in touch with the workpiece – about 20mm – in the vertex of the of the sanding paper. To compensate for this, normal sanding systems have to increase their rotation speed to a high level. This results in a hard touch of the sanding paper leading to an aggressive behaviour on the edges and surface. In contrast to this, the innovative Roba Tech is equipped with a newly-developed sanding belt containing 174 sanding strips and providing a sanding area of approximately 1300 x 1500mm in touch with the workpiece. This, plus the use of more than 250m of brushes installed on all aggregates, guarantees an outstanding sanding performance says MB.

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 38

Visitors to W16 in October can find out first hand about MB Maschinenbau’s products and services

A 360° rotation of the sanding aggregate over the workpiece makes it possible to reach all edges and corners of the workpiece. Many sanding options are available and easy to recall by the

machine’s touchscreen, helping the operator to set the machine to specific sanding requirements. In this way the operator is able to create individual programs for wood, MDF or lacquer sanding

applications. As an option, the Roba Tech can be equipped with a disc system working with three axis kinematics – 12 rotating disc tools are added to three rotating master discs, while this whole configuration is oscillating back and forth. This combined movement makes sure that the disc brushes reach every corner of the workpiece to give the part an even edge break and appearance. Equipped with a click system the machine operator is able to change the disc tools very fast. As an option he may use texturing disc tools using steel wires to give the workpiece a rustic styled and distressed look. The advantage of using a disc system for this operation is that it is irrelevant in which direction the wood grain is presented. That enables the user to distress even framed five-pieces-doors used in the cabinet or interior doors industry. 0049 (0)5221 994130 mb-maschinenbau.de

Elcon And Altendorf panel saws for Alternative Element Alternative Element is an event production company based in Hertfordshire and Daltons Wadkin has provided horizontal and vertical solutions to upgrade the company’s workshop.

Founded by MD Alan Philips, Alternative Element provides high-quality design and build services for conferences, exhibitions, interiors and live events. Alan has been dealing with specialist machinery supplier Daltons Wadkin for 30 years and had no hesitation in contacting it when the time came to upgrade his machine shop. He comments: “I have always received sound advice from Daltons Wadkin and I know they will only offer me the very best equipment to suit my needs. Why would I go anywhere else?” Alan visited the Daltons Wadkin Nottingham showroom to discuss options for upgrading his ageing sliding table panel saw. Daltons Wadkin sales director, Andy Walsh, talked Alan through the options. “We pride ourselves in offering the very best equipment for the job,” says Andy. “Our range of Elcon vertical panel saws and Altendorf sliding table saws allow customers to consider the attributes of each cutting method and the chance to try before they buy.” As it turned out Alan was so impressed by both the Elcon and Altendorf models he purchased

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 42

one of both. “Quick and accurate panel processing is essential in my business,” he says. “If you get it right the rest of the job is easy. In the past panel sawing has been a bottleneck at critical times in a build schedule. “I could see the Elcon would offer very fast and accurate strip-cutting and sizing of boards for the bulk of our work in a compact footprint, while the Altendorf would give the flexibility for cutting angles and mitres. The difference the machines have made to our business is phenomenal.” Alternative Elements opted for the Elcon DS. One of the most popular models in the range, it offers three standard cutting sizes of 1550 x 3300mm, 1850 x 3300mm, 2150 x 4300mm as well as customisable sizes, 60mm cutting depth, electronic digital readouts for guaranteed repeatable accuracy of 0.1mm/m, high speed saw, automatic moving back frame, strip cutting device, programming rail, mid-fence and extended measuring stop. To partner the Elcon, an Altendorf WA80X was also supplied. Like the Elcon, the WA80X range is fully customisable but offers powered

rise, fall and tilt to the saw blade, as well as powered movement to the rip fence movement with an overhead eye level control panel for quick access to machine controls. Andy concludes: ‘We have taken considerable time and effort in developing our machinery range. Elcon and Altendorf form an integral part of this. We have recently completed our portfolio

of high quality panel processing equipment with the addition of Cehisa edgebanders allowing us to offer machinery for cutting, drilling, routing and edging.” For more on the Daltons Wadkin range of panel processing and solid wood machinery, contact a member of the team. 0115 986 5201 daltonswadkin.com

Six heat exchangers ensure a consistent working temperature throughout the factory

DCS turns up the heat at Glyngary Innovative, award-winning Glyngary Joinery is benefiting from a new biomass heating system supplied by Dust Control Systems (DCS).

Glyngary is renowned for quality bespoke joinery manufacture, especially for its distinctive range of sash windows and casement windows and doors, which are manufactured in a wide range of natural woods. The family-owned company, established in 1985 by Colin Yates and now operated jointly by his sons Glyn and Gary Yates, undertakes all production at the company’s 19,000ft2 facility near Warrington, Cheshire. In common with all joinery manufacturers, Glyngary Joinery creates a good deal of wood waste. Avoiding the need to dispose of this waste and instead use it to heat the

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 44

business premises made sense in itself, but the DCS proposal also explained the financial benefits of the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme (RHI). This Government-funded scheme, which was launched in 2011 and managed by OFGEM, pays end users for every kW of heat generated for their business premises. DCS predicted that the company’s capital expenditure on a suitable system could be recovered in around five years through RHI payments, but the Government’s payback period for generating heat is continuous for 20 years after installation – effectively generating

additional income for up to 15 years. Commenting on the decision to commission the new installation, Gary Yates says: “We have had a long-standing relationship with DCS – they installed our existing extraction system and have taken care of maintenance and LEV testing for many years. We have always been impressed by their professional approach and the proposal DCS put forward for the new biomass system presented compelling economic reasons for going ahead with the investment.” Wood waste from the various machines and workstations in the factory continues to be extracted

via the existing DCS filter unit but, rather than the collected wood chips, dust and shavings ending up in a waste trailer, the material is now transferred by means of a transport loop to a cyclone which is situated above a new storage silo. The waste is discharged pressure-free from the cyclone, via a rotary valve, and drops into the storage silo below. The silo itself incorporates a mechanical agitator to ensure a consistent flow of mixed waste to a screw conveyor, which in turn delivers the wood fuel through to the boiler room. Sight windows, arranged vertically up the side of the silo, allow easy visual monitoring of wood waste levels.

High-throughput Schuko shredder – recycled timber off-cuts and bought-in wood chips are transferred to the silo for winter top-up The boiler room houses the new DCS 300kW biomass boiler, along with the RHI metering units which provide a real-time readout of kilowatt hours of heat produced, providing Gary Yates with a constant indicator of the revenue being generated. The high efficiency, user-friendly boiler has automatic ignition,

automatic heat exchange cleaning, and automatic de-ashing – all standard features which help to maximise efficiency and reduce downtime for maintenance. To minimise emissions from the burner, the flue is fitted with a fume scrubber which ensures the system performs well within local authority guidelines.

All collected woodwaste is transferred pressure-free into the new storage silo

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 45

A compact boiler room houses the DCS 300kW biomass boiler, along with control panel, pumps and meters recording kilowatt hours of generated heat To make most efficient use of the hot water generated by the biomass boiler, DCS installed three separate hot water loop systems. One of the three loops exclusively serves the spraying/drying room where two heat exchangers, independently controlled by room thermostats, maintain a constant

even temperature throughout the working day. A second separately metered loop is routed through a series of six heat exchangers, strategicallysited above the remainder of the workshop area. This flexible, efficient use of the boiler ensures both the drying room and workshop are always maintained at optimum working temperatures. The third loop, connected to an externallysited heat dissipater, is designed to operate in the unlikely event that any excess heat is generated – this loop is not metered, so receives no RHI payback, but the system is finely tuned to the factory’s requirements and the dissipater is rarely used. To provide Glyngary with the desired heating levels, the boiler consumes up to four tonnes of wood waste each week during the cooler months of the year, but in the summer months this reduces to around one tonne. In winter, the factory doesn’t produce sufficient filtered waste to meet the demand of the boiler, but all waste wood offcuts from the factory are collected and stored for future use. DCS supplied a high-throughput Schuko Off-Cut Shredder which is used to recycle the stored timber when it’s required for wood fuel. Additionally, Glyngary purchases around 20 tonnes of wood chips per year to augment the supply of fuel in winter – but even burning the bought-in fuel returns a profit. Area sales manager for DCS, Ray Townley, adds: “DCS were delighted to be awarded this contract. The system is ideally suited to Glyngary’s requirements, and working with Gary and the team is always a pleasure.” 0800 040 7116 DCSlimited.co.uk

Creating a new level of joinery performance with Temac Based in Carmarthenshire, South Wales, Willow Joinery designs and manufactures bespoke joinery tailored to its customers’ needs – the business prides itself on attention to detail, no matter the job size. But how could Willow Joinery react to growing demand without merely extending its lead times and potentially losing grip on its quality threshold? Over the last couple of years, Soukup’s window production machinery has been selected by an increasing number of joinery firms across the UK. As one of the fastest-growing brands in the country, demand for Soukup’s range of solutions for window production is growing strongly – so much so, Soukup has invested in a new manufacturing plant near Prague to help cope with growing demand from the UK. Dan Raymond is a director of Willow Joinery, and he first became aware of Soukup at the W14 exhibition. There he met Jaroslav Soukup, the owner of Soukup Woodworking Machinery and Ian Brown, MD of Soukup’s exclusive UK dealer, IWM. “Although we were very impressed by all the machines

Jaroslav and Ian had on display, we thought such a machine wouldn’t be financially achievable for a small joinery firm,” explains Dan. “In late summer of 2015 with growing demand for our windows and doors, we made the decision to invest in some modern machinery to speed up production. We searched all the well-known firms but couldn’t find a suitable machine for our budget. “After reading that Soukup was releasing a new CNC tenoner – designed with the smaller workshop in mind – we got in touch with Ian who invited us to visit another joinery firm which had recently a Temac machine. After seeing the machine in action, and having a chat with Ian and Jaroslav, we realised that this was the right machine for us.” Willow Joinery, as is typical for a small joinery firm, started out using only a range of classic and traditional equipment to create its windows and assorted joinery work. Of course, there is nothing essentially wrong with that, other than it is inherently time-consuming and it becomes a considerable challenge when a firm’s demand begins to increase. Soukup’s Temac machine has been developed particularly for the

Willow Joinery director Dan Raymond is delighted with the performance of his Temac

A sample of the work carried out by Willow Joinery small joinery workshop wishing to compete effectively and efficiently in today’s highly competitive market. A typical joinery workshop mainly uses manual spindle moulders to produce windows by making single operations. The Temac tenoning machine can, with the guidance from its WinCreator software, move production to a different level altogether. “Before the Temac was installed we used a number of machines to produce our windows. These included a three-head tenoner, a mortise machine and a spindle moulder,” explains Dan. Needless to say, this trio took considerable time to set up and pass the window components through. The company needed to find a solution. “Once the tooling had been selected to suit the windows we wanted to produce, it took six

weeks before the Temac was delivered – and both Jaroslav and Ian promptly made the journey for the installation. After day one, the Temac was up-and-running, ready for training,” says Dan. “The WinCreator software is simple to use as is the Temac. After making a few sample windows we started on our first job list which consisted of eight oak flush casement windows which we completed in a matter of hours, cutting our production time greatly. “I would highly recommend the Temac for any company with growing demand for their products – the service we received from Jaroslav and Ian is second to none and will be the first company we call for future purchases.” iwmachines.co.uk 01869 244943 willow-joinery.com 07944 108747

Full environmental waste management upgrade for Touch Design Dustraction has installed a new dust extraction and management system with Touch Design Group in Devon.

David Crosby works in conjunction with partner Ed Tremlett at Touch Design

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 48

The newly-commissioned extraction plant has been installed to operate automatically in tandem with a new boiler system by leading waste-to-energy partner Wood Waste Technology at the new factory of long-standing dust extraction customer Touch Design in Exeter. Touch Design Group is well known for the architect-inspired interior projects it undertakes, many of them in the most exclusive territories of London’s West End. Kitchens, bedrooms with dressing rooms, libraries, bars, staircases – whatever the project, skilled craftsmen make each piece to order using both CNC technology and traditional bench skills.

The company’s top-end users are unstinting in the production quality demands of directors Ed Tremlett and David Crosby, who are similarly uncompromising when it comes to the demands they set for their dust extraction and working environment standards. “When we moved to our Exeter site a year ago, we needed to upgrade our dust extraction system so that it worked seamlessly with the new boiler that was planned from Wood Waste Technology,” recalls David. “We had used both them and Dustraction before and their working association and standards of engineering meant we could be assured of an integrated fit – which was exactly what we

Touch Design’s new dust extraction plant is by Dustraction and is linked to a boiler by Wood Waste Technology

needed because the funding we had secured was for a complete package. Dustraction is used to working both with Wood Waste Technology and also now with us, so it made good sense to stick with the partnership we knew and were used to.” Dustraction’s quotation included upgrading the existing extraction system and replacing its Dustrax four-section filter with a new sixsection 27RV Dustrax filter, to be fed from a new 37kW fan-set together

The Dustrax 27RV wood-waste filter has an automatic shake-down of waste from the tubular sock-type filters giving an area of around 162m2. Waste is transferred into the end of the hopper section by a floor-mounted fan-set and is discharged via a heavy duty rotary valve air-seal. “The whole of the

Dustraction’s new system at Touch Design is disposing of wood and panel waste from architect-inspired interior projects destined for the most exclusive territories of London’s West End filter plant,” says Dustraction’s Steve Matuska,“is mounted on a galvanised steel support structure that’s been specially designed by us to raise the rotary valve high enough so that waste can be fed directly into the conveying system, silo and WWT boiler installation to work in syncro and fully automatically.” An access door has been included below the rotary valve to discharge waste directly to a container or bulker bag to bypass the boiler if required and explosion relief is in accordance with ATEX requirements and has been built into the filter by Dustraction.

Operation of the entire plant is controlled from a single control panel and the finished installation enables Touch Design to comply fully with all COSHH requirements. “The hopper feeds the boiler automatically,” says David; “it really works a treat, and Dustraction have been fantastic to work with. They were always here when they said they would be and the whole installation went through like clockwork. As always, Dustraction have been very communicative throughout the process – we couldn’t be more pleased!” 0116 271 3212 dustraction.co.uk

WWT helps exhibition company save money A North-west exhibition company has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology (WWT) to save money on waste disposal costs and obtain free heating for its large workshop. Unique Exhibitions has specialised in exhibition stand design and construction since it started trading in 2007, and needed a solution for all the timber, MDF and other wood waste that was generated as a result of its manufacturing process. After researching wood waste heaters on the internet, the team at the Blackburn-based company started to understand how a wood waste heater could reduce its operating costs, but was keen to find a solution that would be acceptable with the local council. As a result, it was recommended to speak to WWT, which has high quality products and years of experience in the manufacture and installation of biomass technology. Although the team at Unique Exhibitions was initially concentrating on potential waste disposal savings from the purchase, it was delighted to hear that the wood waste heater would also provide free heating, as the 8000ft2 workshop had no existing source of heating, so could be extremely cold in winter. After speaking with WWT, the company ordered a WT15 wood waste heater that was installed by WWT’s dedicated engineers earlier this year. Unique Exhibitions’ MD, Richard Jeffrey, says: “We’re delighted with our new wood waste

heater, although we wish we’d bought one years ago. We’ve calculated that the heater will pay for itself in less than 12 months, due to the money we’ll be saving on skips and other waste disposal methods, and the free heating is just an extra bonus.” MD of WWT, Kurt Cockroft says: “We’re delighted that Unique Exhibitions is benefiting from its investment in a wood waste burner. We’re finding many exhibition companies are looking at biomass solutions, due to the amount of waste wood that is generated in that industry.” WWT offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, WWT is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and

lower operating costs. 01785 250400 woodwastetechnology.com grossuk.co.uk putzmaus.co.uk

Using Versalis will enable Erpo to increase productivity and optimise hide use. One Versalis will do the

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 50

same amount of work as two of Erpo’s previous leather-cutting solutions. The algorithms used in the associated automated nesting software will enable the company to reduce material consumption by more than 5% – a significant cost advantage considering the leather prices of the premium segment – while securing consistent quality. The effectiveness of Lectra’s project approach was another factor in Erpo’s decision to choose Lectra. Lectra experts will work closely with Erpo to integrate the cutting solution into the company’s current production processes. “With Versalis, we will not only increase hide efficiency and cutting capacity but, due to its integration into our overall production process, we are also expecting a return on investment in less than 16 months. Lectra continues to impress us with their ability to surpass our expectations,” says Klaus Oevermann, MD, Erpo. “For years, Erpo’s customers have been able to experience the

Striebig boost to established joinery firm A Striebig Evolution vertical panel saw is delivering improved accuracy together with increased productivity at one of Britain’s oldest joinery businesses. A Seamer & Son was established in Derby in 1875 by John Seamer. The last member of the Seamer family involved in the business, also called John, retired in 2014 and the company is now owned by MD Richard Latham, who started with the firm as an apprentice joiner in 1981. With 141 years of experience and expertise under its belt, Seamer’s highly skilled joiners produce a wide range of hand-crafted bespoke joinery items for domestic and commercial customers nationwide, with a great deal of repeat business. “As we operate at the very top end of our market it’s vitally important that we continue to strive to maintain and improve our product quality, which is why I believe in investing in the best and most up-to-date equipment,” says Richard Latham. When Richard took over the running of the business he set up a management group to look into ways of improving how the products were made, as well as how to boost productivity. The existing sawing capability, which consisted of an elderly flat bed saw that wasn’t all that accurate and needed three men to handle the cutting of large panels, was quickly

MD Richard Latham with the Striebig vertical panel saw

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 52

A joiner sizes a panel on the Striebig Evolution at J Seamer & Son identified as being in urgent need of improvement. “I knew from my time in the business and from what contacts in associated companies had told me, that Striebig had a reputation of being the market leader in panel saws, which is why I didn’t bother looking at any other makes,” says Richard. He did some research on Striebig and its UK dealer, TM Machinery, which was asked to come in to talk

about what machines they could offer. He decided to go with an Evolution model as it came with a bed size that could handle all Seamer’s sheet material and he felt it suited exactly what was needed. The Striebig Evolution 5224 he selected, one of nine different sized models in the Evolution series, has a maximum cutting size of 4300 x 2240mm and a maximum depth of cut of 80mm. It features as standard Striebig’s user-friendly ‘touch and saw’ operating system which delivers easy and convenient machine control through a touch screen panel that operates all of the machine’s functions. The Evolution represents the cutting edge in vertical panel saw technology. Technical features that are optional extras in other saws are included as standard. They include a digital measuring system, accurate to 0.1mm, and an adjustable precision display that can be set to an accuracy of 1.0, 0.5 or 0.1mm, according to the thickness of the panels being sized. It has a fully automatic roller locking function, an auxiliary stop section with its own tape measure, three additional auxiliary stops for repeat cuts and small workpiece support, and automatic moving backing support. Striebig’s highly effective TRK extraction keeps users well ahead of all European legislation, with the panel support system offering support for the thinnest of panels. The saw is used to size all the

sheet material used by Seamer’s joiners, mainly MDF and plywood, including veneered MDF sheets, as well as cutting the occasional piece of timber to length. Richard is extremely satisfied with the benefits the Evolution is delivering: “We now have 100% accuracy all the time with cut panels no longer out of square. This means we have eliminated scrappage as well as saving on sawing time, which will help to improve our profitability.” Another plus is that the Striebig has reduced manual handling. It could take three men to size a large sheet on the flat bed saw, with two needed to feed the panel onto the bed and a third to pull it through. Now it is usually a one-man job on the Striebig, or occasionally two to handle the biggest panels. “In my book you get what you pay for and I wanted a saw that was reliable, accurate and long lasting,” says Richard. “It was well worth buying the Striebig because of all the added benefits it’s giving us.” TM Machinery’s sales director Matt Pearce says: “It’s satisfying to know that by supplying one of the latest Striebig saws to Seamers we are helping this long-established company move forward and take full advantage of the latest in sawing technology.” The latest Striebig machines will be exhibited by TM Machinery on stand B610 at W16 at the NEC in October. 0116 271 7155 tmmachinery.co.uk

Godfrey Syrett invests in top technology to support continuous innovation A UK furniture manufacturer has partnered with Lectra to help achieve its ambitious growth targets …

Lectra, a world leader in integrated technology solutions dedicated to industries using fabrics, leather, technical textiles and composite materials, reports that furntiure manufacturer Godfrey Syrett has chosen Lectra’s software and fabric cutting solutions to automate and optimise its production. Founded in 1947, Godfrey Syrett designs and manufactures innovative furniture solutions for the education, office, healthcare and defence markets throughout the United Kingdom. With plans to double its turnover within five years, Godfrey Syrett recognised the need to become more responsive in order to quickly fulfil new orders and continually innovate within its product range. “Previously, our products were designed, developed and manufactured by hand. Whilst we are very proud of this heritage, this approach did

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 53

have the potential for costly production errors,” explains Michael Donachie, operations manager, Godfrey Syrett. Lectra worked with the team at Godfrey Syrett to pinpoint its needs and demonstrate the impact automation would have on production speed and cost. “The results were fantastic, fabric savings were huge versus manual cutting, at around 33%,” continues Michael. Godfrey Syrett took the decision to invest in a state-of-the-art Lectra cutting solution, including advanced pattern- and marker-making software, a fabric spreading solution and a Vector fabric cutter. With Vector, Godfrey Syrett can cut in 2.5 minutes what would have taken 40 minutes using a manual process. It will also deliver consistent quality of cut parts that is impossible to achieve with hand cutting. Vector will be put to work on products such as Zip, the company’s modular

seating offer which zips and unzips for easy reconfiguration, and Mr Jones, an award-winning soft seating range. Michael concludes: “We expect to substantially increase our production capacity as well as our agility. “By demonstrating such impressive results, as well as being able to connect us to a global network of manufacturers, Lectra stood head and shoulders above the rest as clear market leaders.” Neil Tweddle, MD at Godfrey Syrett adds: “In a market driven by the need for flexibility, style, innovation as well as function, we knew that we had to transform as a business to achieve our growth ambitions and secure new business. “Technology is playing a major part in this transformation and I am excited to watch our partnership with Lectra grow into the future.” lectra.com

rails; helical drives providing high speed; accuracy and durability; advanced drivers of motor function; and half current – which limits the holding current engine so that it greatly reduces overheating of the engine. In addition, there is a professional brushless motor spindle which is liquid-cooled and industrial-type bearings which provide low noise even at high speeds and provide impressive durability. The scope of the spindle is 6000-24000rpm and it features the tool-holder ER20 meaning bushings can be used from 1-12.7mm – or thicker on more professional systems. There is also an active security system with self-diagnosis and this is particularly important during the health and safety inspections. The award-winning Seron CNC machines have been in production for the last 20 years, so early faults and issues have already been identified and rectified.

Additional options include: a spindle upgrade to 12kW; a vacuum or hybrid table; spindle cooling; spindle tools magazine; servo AC drive; lathe fitted on the bed, a laser scanner, dust extraction, grid geometry; an oscilating knife; a creasing knife; a marker and a positioning camera, among others. Karol says that Goldcrest’s Polish-made machinery is sturdy enough to survive in even the roughest of workshop environments, and around 30% cheaper than competitors’ products. “In my opinion, there’s no-one better than us to advise buyers on new machinery,” he concludes. “We know it all by heart – what can and can’t be done, and which setup is best for any given production process. As a joinery manufacturer, we wouldn’t sell anything we’re not comfortable with using ourselves.” T 0208 003 3299 W machinesbygoldcrest.co.uk

Weeke’s new five-axis Venture BMG 115 has raised the bar for technically advanced compact CNC machines. The introduction of this genuine entry-level five-axis CNC model represents a real milestone, bringing complex CNC production within the reach of the smaller manufacturer.

Venture BMG 115 – the new entry-level five-axis CNC machining centre from Weeke The Venture BMG 115’s installation area has been reduced by 15% and the operator has free access from all sides, making it quick and easy to set up and operate. The BMG 115 also comes with an optional patent-pending convenience package. This features a start/pause/stop button on the machine frame itself, along with proximity scanners on the gantry which detect people or objects that get too close, stopping the processing immediately to avoid accidents. “The new Weeke Venture BMG 115 is a superbly engineered entry level five-axis CNC machine,” enthuses Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at Homag UK. He continues: “The designers have thought long and hard about the machine’s working environment and made life much easier for the operator. Everything from the large inspection window to the 360° access and the movable powerTouch terminal is designed to make it a simple, efficient and costeffective CNC to run.” Venture BMG 115 – the new five-axis powerhouse The Weeke Venture BMG 115 features a new Drive5CS fiveaxis head for high performance versatility. The design of the unit, with the release mechanism in the housing rather than the spindle, allows a more compact construction which reduces lever

forces. The spindle is powered by a new 10kW motor with the option to upgrade to a more powerful 13.2kW version, if required. The five-axis BMG 115 has two separate Z-axes, one for the drill head and the other for the main spindle. This means large tools can stay in the main spindle while the drill block is in use, saving on tool changer time. The standard machine also includes 12 vertical and six horizontal drills with a 0-90° groove saw. New patent pending convenience package The Weeke Venture BMG 115 can be specified with the new convenience package which enables the operator to start, pause or stop the machine using a simple button on the front of the machine gantry. Proximity scanners on the gantry itself act as a safety device which stops processing automatically if someone or something gets too close to the gantry whilst the machine is in action. Once the danger has been removed, the operator can resume the job without delay. Unique console table design Unlike other models on the market, the Venture BMG 115’s consoles do not overhang at the front. This means that not only do all workpieces have good support, but also the waste material from the workpieces falls into the centre of

WEEKE Venture BMG 115 – designed to allow operator access from all four sides

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 55

the machine and not onto the floor in front of it. Ultimately, using this construction technique, the machine frame itself is much more rigid and heavier than other comparable machines. This provides a solid foundation from which the substantial gantry can be mounted without loss of surface finish quality on the end product. To further enhance its performance, the BMG 115 can be fitted with an optional waste removal conveyor belt. This wide conveyor runs the length of the machine under the console table, efficiently removing waste as it is produced. The machine has scales and pointer clamps as standard. If, however, faster, more accurate clamping is required, the BMG 115 can be specified with either a cross-beam laser or LED display clamping system. Mobile control unit To give the operator more freedom,

the powerTouch control monitor has been mounted on a separate mobile unit so the operator can place it in the optimum location for each job or operation. The Venture BMG 115 uses the powerControl PC 86 hardware, a modern control system based on a Windows PC with Windows 7 operating system and an Intel CPU. The machine is controlled using the renowned woodWOP 7 software package which offers fast and intuitive operation thanks to simple and direct navigation. With 3D images of workpieces, processing and clamping equipment, woodWOP offers increased programming security. In addition, as the most popular control software available worldwide, it has the largest online forum for CNC programming – www.woodWOP-Forum.com – giving users a vast knowledge bank at their fingertips that can be accessed 24/7. “The new Weeke Venture BMG 115 is a compact and versatile entry level five-axis CNC processing centre,” concludes Simon Brooks, “its small footprint, unique console table design, mobile control unit and new convenience package give it a real edge in terms of affordable productivity and performance. Our Homag Finance team are able to offer flexible finance solutions on the BMG 115 making five-axis machining more affordable than ever before.” If more information on the five-axis Weeke Venture BMG 115 CNC processing centre or details of available finance packages is required, call Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. 01332 856500 homag-uk.co.uk

Developed for the furniture and furniture supply industries, the Homag Group’s woodCAD|CAM software optimises production processes from initial design concept through to the finished product. This software is specifically configured for Homag Group machines to create efficient order processing and production.

woodCAD|CAM – the Homag Group’s design-to-machine software solution

“The furniture industry is under huge pressure to reduce manufacturing time and costs in order to meet ever-tougher market demands,” explains Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at Homag UK. “These days we all expect quality products at valuefor-money prices and, in this instant society, long delivery times are just not acceptable. “On top of all this, we want to own something which is that little bit different, something more bespoke. It’s not a good feeling to walk into someone else’s house and see exactly the same furniture as we have at home. “These demands dictate that not only do manufacturers have to be extremely flexible and in tune with the market, but they also have to be able to change designs and put them into production quickly, all in the most cost-efficient work flow. “These drivers were the very inspiration behind Homag’s design-to-machine woodCAD|CAM software concept.” From design, direct to machine “This software delivers parametric furniture design in 3D and provides a direct link to the manufacturing machines. “This means that whether for standalone furniture or complex room plans, the path from the first concepts to production on the machine

is as simple as it is impressive. Immediately following the design process, production drawings and bills of material can be created at the click of a mouse, with design data automatically forwarded to the saw, edgebander and CNC machines. “This ensures perfect integration of production machines into the overall process,” enthuses Simon. Design in 3D with customer visualisations Regardless of whether working with dimensionally variable carcass furniture or complex furnishing items, such as counters, bars or reception desks, assemblies are generated in 3D complete with all their connections, processing operations and hardware. Operation is simple and intuitive with every design change immediately calculated and depicted. When it comes to visualising prototypes, planning and design results are photorealistically depicted so that customers can easily see or visualise how the finished furniture will look. At the same time, woodCAD|CAM creates drawings in a two- or three-dimensional view. This includes all cross-sections and details for easy communication with architects and developers.

Simple and intuitive operation with 3D visualisations

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 58

Total production control at the click of a mouse The system encompasses an integrated order and project management capability. This means planning and design data is calculated directly with material and production costs which can be read out in various forms, such as a manufacturing cost calculation or a quotation template. The system automatically generates dimensioned component drawings directly from the 3D design. In addition, all the necessary cutting lists, bills of material, barcodes, labels and CNC programmes are automatically generated, saving time and eliminating errors. From here, Homag Group machinery such as panel sizing saws, throughfeed machines and CNC processing centres can be directly actuated with all the necessary parameters such as tool selection, drilling pattern, speed feed rate or approach strategy. The competitive edge “This software gives furniture manufacturers a real edge,” claims Simon. “Not only is it the most efficient way to produce furniture, but it is also the only real alternative if you want to remain competitive. woodCAD|CAM is an extremely cost-effective product and due to its modular design, customers only need purchase the parts relevant to their business. “The Homag Group prides itself on its innovation and has recently enhanced the woodCAD|CAM software by adding further modules to it. These modules give it the ability to work with both nesting and five axis machines ensuring that the technology is truly versatile. “Companies that have invested in the woodCAD|CAM software are enjoying a sea change in their production processes as well as a significant uplift in their bottom line. This recent development from the Group is really exciting and a superb edition to our alreadycomprehensive range of software solutions for the woodworking and plastics industries,” concludes Simon. Cheshire based McKye’s is a bespoke furniture designer and manufacturer which specialises in the production of high quality kitchens. The decision to invest in a Kimla CNC router was prompted by increased demand and the requirement to reduce panel processing times.

Bespoke kitchen manufacturer invests in Kimla CNC router designed to meet his needs

Tim McKye with the Kimla BPF2131 CNC router Following a working demonstration at the Daltons Wadkin Nottingham showroom, company founder Tim McKye quickly realised the benefits of a Kimla over other CNC routers on the market. “The build quality of the Kimla was immediately apparent,” says Tim. “One of the key things for me was the physical footprint – space is always a premium but the Kimla is compact. We opted for a machine to accommodate jumbo boards, but even with the large working area, it takes up very little relative space in our workshop.” Each Kimla is manufactured to order. With almost limitless combinations of bed sizes, spindle types, tool changers, table configurations, etc, the Kimla is a fully-customisable CNC machine.

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 64

Tim continues: “I had been met by blank expressions from other manufacturers when I asked about increased Z axis heights or increased working areas, but for Kimla it was no trouble. A truly refreshing approach.” The Kimla BPF model was equipped with a 9kW spindle, 10 position tool changer, 2.1 x 3.1m matrix vacuum table for nesting, 300mm Z axis and table reference pins. Each Kimla is supplied with its own powerful CAD/CAM software package, but as Tim was already familiar with Vectric software a post processor was installed for seamless integration. “The speed and accuracy of the machine is phenomenal,” enthuses Tim. “With the large format bed I can nest components from a jumbo sheet. Work that previously took me

a week now takes just two or three hours. Fitting time on site is also quicker as everything is accurate and fits first time.” A key attribute of the Kimla machines is versatility, and the ability to continually monitor cutting paths to regulate the feed speed ensures the best possible finish. “We are now cutting Corian, something I have not even thought of before. The increased Z axis means I can mount vacuum pods on the matrix table for solid wood processing too. Again, something that set the Kimla apart for me.” Daltons Wadkin has been specialising in CNC machines for over 10 years and has experience of installations across a range of industries including aerospace, automotive, sign and shopfitting, stage and set design, plastics and

education as well as traditional furniture and joinery manufacturing. “This year sees us celebrate 115 years of service to the industry,” comments director Alex Dalton. “We have built our reputation on supplying only the very best equipment with a continual emphasis on quality and service. “The Kimla range of CNC routers fits perfectly into our product portfolio. Traditional joinery equipment is still an important part of our business, but it is our range of high-tech CNC products that offer our customers the biggest opportunity to boost production, increase quality and cut costs.” For more information on Daltons Wadkin range of CNC routers, contact a member of the team. 0115 986 5201 daltonswadkin.com

German engineering company, Holzma, is one of the world’s leading beam saw manufacturers. For the engineers at Holzma, however, it is not just about designing efficient saws …

From entry-level to industrial production, Holzma saws lead the field

HOLZMA HPL 500 – increased capacity with reliability for high quality products at Eureka Display

Holzma’s remit is to create solutions that are guaranteed to make daily manufacturing quicker, more accurate and more efficient. Its goal is to improve product quality, prevent errors and increase both flexibility and output. This approach has enabled Holzma to take the basic beam saw and develop it into an advanced piece of machinery which does much more than simply size panels. One of its most popular ranges is the 300 Series, designed for smallto medium-sized enterprises. Holzma 300 Series – compact, technically advanced beam saws The 300 Series models are technically advanced machines that have set the standard for beam saws worldwide. The HPP 300 is the base model, but its specification is anything but standard. It’s a compact and powerful saw featuring an 80mm saw blade projection, an exceptionally smooth running saw carriage and low energy consumption. Optional extras include increased cutting height, ascending

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 66

and vertical post forming packages, pneumatic trim stops, manual angle cuts, high precision laser guide beam, kerfing, a label printer, a stress-release cut option and Magi-Cut optimisation software packages. More recently, an Easy2Feed option has been developed which offers automatic feeding at a budget price and can be retrofitted to both the HPP 300 and 250 models. The core element of Easy2Feed is a compact scissor lift table which is perfect for loading with a forklift truck. The HPL 300 model features an integrated lift table for automatic feeding to speed up production and boost throughput. At the top of the Holzma 300 Series range is the HKL 300 angular system which is, in effect, two saws in one, permitting simultaneous rip and cross cutting for higher output. Completing the 300 Series range is the HKL 300 combiLine. This breakthrough machine enables cutting and routing on a Holzma angular saw which delivers many benefits. Flexible and highly cost

efficient, it virtually eliminates extra work steps for recuts, resulting in a fully automated cut-to-size operation for batch-size-one customers at very high speed. Borley Laminates invests in a Holzma HPP 300 to get a reliable, high quality saw Borley Laminates, trading as Willis Systems, provides a wide variety of washroom products from budget toilet cubicles to fully designed bespoke washroom solutions. “A reliable, high quality beam saw is the bedrock of our business,” explains Joe Borley, a director of the company. “We cut, drill, rout and edge an enormous number and variety of panels to make up our washroom solutions and so we have to have machinery we can count on day in, day out. “As far as we are concerned, you can’t beat German engineering and that is why we have invested heavily in equipment from Homag UK. We’ve run Holzma beam saws for many years and, when it came to upgrading our saw, Holzma was again top of our list.

“Our new HPP 300 has sped up our manufacturing processes by around 25-30% and yet the quality and accuracy remains absolutely first class. The cuts are square with no chipping, so they don’t have to go to another machine for finishing.” Homag UK – a first class friendly and professional service “Our contact at Homag UK, Andy Potter, is very straightforward. He tells it like it is, so you know exactly where you stand and you can trust him 100%. “Along with the installation engineers, Andy makes the whole specifying and installation process very easy. “As a consequence, the installation of the new saw went like clockwork. Homag’s engineers worked alongside our team, training them to ensure they were ready to hit the ground running as soon as the installation was complete. “In terms of support, Homag UK are brilliant. Any issues are sorted straightaway whether it’s for our Holzma saws, Brandt edgebanders or Weeke CNCs,” concludes Joe.

Holzma HPL 500 – a powerful industrial level beam saw with automatic feeding The Holzma HPL 500 is equipped with a heavy-duty lift table for automatic feeding. This significantly speeds up the manufacturing process. This machine can cut lengths of up to 6500mm and offers a saw blade projection of up to 170mm with extremely accurate saw blade positioning via a ballscrew spindle. It also features improved dust extraction for a cleaner environment. The saw’s body is made of Holzma’s unique Sorb Tech construction, making it very robust and truly accurate, delivering up to ten times better vibration dampening, 20% higher sound absorption, 30% longer saw blade life and 40% lower consumption of primary energy during production. The HPL 500 has a rugged clamping system designed for continuous, multi-shift operation, and a precise and accurate program fence with electromagnetic measuring system that guarantees positioning accuracy of +/- 0.1mm, therefore minimising trim and dust cuts. Holzma HPL 500 delivers for Eureka Display Wakefield-based Eureka Display is one of the UK’s foremost manufacturers of shopfitting equipment. It claims to be the choice of many leading shopfitters for three key reasons: firstly, it uses only top grade, quality materials; secondly, it offers an almost infinite range of finishes; and finally, it is reliable, turning round orders quickly and delivering on time. “To maintain this level of service, we have to have machinery we can rely on,” comments Ashley Littlewood, company manager at Eureka Display. “It has to be accurate, fast and yet provide quality results every time. “Our old Giben saw had performed well over the years but when it came to replacing it, we

HOLZMA HPP 300 – 25%-30% faster manufacturing for Borley Laminates knew exactly what we wanted. As a matter of course, we carried out due diligence in the marketplace, but nothing came close to offering the benefits the Holzma saw delivers. “Dealing with John Shepherd and Homag UK made life very easy. There’s no toing and froing, John knows what he’s talking about, offers a fair price and gets the deal done. Homag UK arranged everything including the crane to install the machine and Ian Smith, the installation engineer, was extremely tidy and efficient. The result was virtually no downtime during the installation process and after four days of training we were up to full speed. “The woodWOP and Magi-Cut optimising software are easy to use. Magi-Cut enables us to do all the sizing work in the office, provide a quote over the phone and then send the job direct to the saw, so it’s very efficient and saves time. “We cut a lot of MDF sheet material and the bigger blade diameter on the HPL 500 enables us to cut seven sheets at a time, instead of the five we used to be able to do with the old saw. So all in all, the new Holzma gives us the increase in capacity we need whilst maintaining the high quality and reliability that we demand,” concludes Ashley.

Enter the world of high precision manufacturing with the Holzma HPP 130 The new Holzma HPP 130 costs little more than a conventional table circular saw, but cuts single panels to a much higher level of precision and does so far more efficiently. With a 60mm saw blade projection, it is ideal for processing single panels and small batches. The HPP 130’s three air cushion tables, each 500mm wide, make for easy and gentle panel handling. The machine is controlled with Holzma’s proven CADmatic software which is both easy to use and has been developed especially for production processes in panel dividing. Holzma HPP 130 doubles board processing capacity for Ruddy Joinery “Our decision to buy a Holzma HPP 130 was part of a larger investment strategy to increase the capacity of the business,” explains Adrian Glover, general manager of Flitwickbased Ruddy Joinery & Fit-Out Specialists. “We were looking to double the capacity of our board and veneer processing to keep pace with expansion in the bespoke joinery, as well as the high end off-site washroom market which we entered four years ago.

HOLZMA HPP 130 has doubled board processing capacity for Ruddy Joinery

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 67

“The washroom products require a high volume of processing of laminate, melamine and Corian boards which meant we would need a new saw and five-axis CNC machine to cope with this increase in volume. The saw, however, didn’t need to be an all-singing, alldancing mass feeding machine. “Also, it had to have a small footprint as space in the production facility is at a premium. The Holzma HPP 130 fitted the bill perfectly. It uses the same software as our other Homag Group machinery and so using Magi-Cut can be ‘talked to’ and programmed from the office upstairs. “We have been fans of Homag Group equipment for a long time – they are by some margin one of the better manufacturers. More importantly, perhaps, they have a good support structure. Machines go wrong, that’s a fact of life, so you need to buy from a company that can solve issues quickly and efficiently. Homag UK provide that support, it really is a complete package. “Everything from the installation of the saw, to the training and support is slick, exactly what you’d expect from the world leader in woodworking machinery. Our calculations show that the Holzma HPP 130 will pay for itself within 18 months. It is more accurate than the old saw and has doubled our capacity in board processing, vastly reducing the number of night shifts we have to run to avoid bottlenecks. “The people at Homag UK are a pleasure to deal with. They are professional, they know their business inside out and do not give you the hard sell because they know they’ve got great products,” concludes Adrian. From small business to industrial production, every workshop knows that the lower the vibration of circular saw blades during the cutting process, the better the cut quality, and the lower the noise emission. New laser ornaments developed by Leitz, along with specific damping material, mean that Leitz circular saw blades have precisely this effect …

The circular saw blade revolution from Leitz Leitz’s circular saw blades now feature new laser ornaments to reduce vibration generated during cutting, increase stability and improve the quiet running of circular saw blades. The benefit of the new laser ornaments allows better cutting quality, higher RPM and increased noise reduction. In co-operation with the Institute for Machine Tools at the Stuttgart University, Leitz has also designed a specific damping mass that can fill the ornaments. They reinforce the vibration dampening and by this release the positive effect of the laser ornaments. By reducing the cutting forces, the energy used by circular saw blades can be reduced. By reducing the cutting width of the blades, the material waste can be reduced and yield increased. In order for circular saw blades for specific working materials to be developed, tooth shapes and other factors are optimised. As part of its ongoing pursuit of excellence and innovation on behalf of customers, Leitz is also researching alternative tungsten carbide types and diamond to increase performance times. Andreas Kisselbach, head of Leitz research and development at Leitz, says: “Increasing the stability of circular saw blades is another development in focus. Today, a circular saw blade has to be capable to process many different

New laser ornaments

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 68

Leitz saw blades boast low vibration working materials. Each of them requires different cutting speeds, therefore, circular saw blades have be able to run at any RPM. The new laser ornaments and the damping material offers increased stability.” Leitz has divided its program of circular saw blades into three quality levels. The entry, the Premium and the Excellent level. The Premium range has the new laser ornaments, optimised gullets

and tooth heights to reduce air turbulence and have to have a positive effect to influence the vibration behavior of the saw blades. The laser ornaments on the Excellent variants are filled with the new damping material and achieve optimal stability and quiet running. Leitz at W16 Leitz Tooling will feature its stateof-the-art joinery tooling and its

A+ energy rated timber window manufacturing ThermoTech System on stand D410 at the W16 Exhibition at the NEC in October. Visitors can also discuss their tooling servicing on stand, and, following the success of the format at W14, Leitz will again be offering visitors one-to-one tooling and production trouble-shooting sessions. leitz-tooling.co.uk

Essex-based Prima Tooling has specialised in the manufacture of quality tooling for the woodworking industry since 1979 and was set up by experienced partners with a clear maxim – to advise, design and manufacture a premium quality range of woodworking machinery tools in carbide, high speed steel and polycrystalline diamond. John Legg visited to find out more.

Experienced, technically-astute approach by Prima Tooling Now 37 years later, Prima Tooling is extremely well versed in manufacturing and servicing woodworking tools for all applications. Based in Brentwood, Essex, just off the A12, the company is resolutely a British firm in the classic mould, using a combination of experienced management, a dedicated and knowledgeable staff with a combination of traditional skills and techniques allied to state-of-the-art machinery and equipment. Prima Tooling does not lavish funds on a glamorous offices rather choosing to consistently invest in whatever technology is required to deliver a quality product and service to its customers. On a recent visit, whilst some of the equipment can be described as mature, it all

functions well and much of what is being used on a daily basis is state of the art. The company currently employs 12 and is run by two directors, Mark Cattle and Paul Wiggins. It is clear that the directors and staff have total confidence in the capabilities of the business, stating: “We manufacture bespoke and standard tooling tipped with PCD, TCT or HSS plus solid tungsten carbide spiral tooling. “The tools we produce include router cutters, milling cutters and spindle tooling for moulders and edgebanding. In addition, we create tools for drilling, counter boring and counter sinking. “We use the most up-to-date CNC machinery from Vollmer to manufacture our PCD, and ANCA for our TCT tooling. However, we Prima Tooling manufacture bespoke and standard tooling tipped with PCD, TCT or HSS plus solid tungsten carbide spiral tooling

also still produce individual custom tools using traditional grinding machines utilising the skills and experience of our engineers. “All our tools are designed using software from Autocad, and Featurecam 3D solid modelling. We turn and mill our tool bodies from steel blanks, and cut our PCD and TCT tips using wire spark erosion machines. “With our focus on speed and accuracy of the tooling we produce, our customers have confidence with the tooling knowing it will cut to fit their exact requirements, as they are machined to accuracies in the micron range.” The accuracy of the tools’

dimensions and profile are inspected on the company’s Walter Helicheck CNC optical measuring machine. Using this, Prima is able to produce a report for the customer confirming the tolerances of the tool. Before the tool is shipped, tools are checked for balance on a dynamic balancing machines to ensure a smooth vibration-free cut. Finally, each tool is laser etched with the dimensions and safe RPM information. Prima’s success with PCD tooling has been brought about by utilising the experience gained in conventional woodworking tool manufacture to ensure that each

PCD tool is exactly what each customer needs. The company has a customerfocused approach in that it does not just manufacture and sell PCD tools, they advise their customers on what is the right tool for a particular application. If customers are encountering tooling problems, Prima can help solve it. This can be just replacing damaged tips or moving tips to maintain critical sizes. Whatever your requirements, Prima offers a complete service. “Once you buy PCD tooling from us,” says Mark, “you’ll find that we’ll be happy to give advice on the installation and running of the tooling. And we’ll back this up with reliable maintenance. In short, the complete service.” Numerous customers can testify to Prima Tooling’s consistent approach. A Bedford-based manufacturer has been using Prima Tooling ever since it purchased a CNC machine over five years ago, a spokesman explains: “Their expert knowledge of cutters is invaluable to us and we often rely on their guidance. The service has always remained good and personal.

We like the fact they’re able to manufacture PCD and TCT cutting tools bespoke to our needs.” The manufacture of woodworking tooling is undoubtedly something of an art form – it takes commitment,

experience, talent and technical prowess – I think it’s safe to say that the team at Prima Tooling possess all these attributes, and more. 01277 260340 primatooling.co.uk

In what has been an eventful year for the trade, the show will be brimming with the latest products, innovations and developments across the sector. An informative educational seminar programme led by the Timber Research and Development Association (TRADA) will also be held, along with a discussion of the key issues currently facing the industry. The show is also fully supported by the industry’s leading trade groups and associations, some of which include TRADA, the Structural Timber Association, the British Woodworking Federation, the Timber Trade Federation, the Confederation of Timber Industries, the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Construction Products Association. As a result of the strong support of the show by leading associations, its comprehensive seminar programme is full of high quality content that will make visiting well worth while.

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 81

The show will offer an opportunity to get a heads up on the latest developments in the industry and represents the first major event in the industry following the EU referendum. TRADA will co-ordinate the Timber Focus Theatre, providing three days of insightful seminar sessions across a broad spectrum of industry trends and issues. With opportunities for the audience to join the debate, the programme offers a unique chance to converse with influential speakers from across the timber industry. In addition to the Timber Focus Theatre there will also be a Timber Flooring Workshop, delivered in conjunction with the Flooring Industry Training Association. The event will feature the latest products, innovations and developments within the timber sector and will bring together key players from an increasingly exciting and diverse international market. One of the key merchants exhibiting this year will be the W Howard Group. As an established timber merchant that has served building and construction industries in the North-west of England for nearly 60 years, it is in a good place to offer insight and advice to those at Timber Expo 2016. In addition to well-known UK brands, Timber Expo has attracted some of the biggest international players too, including Vandecasteele Houtimport. Other companies signed up to exhibit at this year’s Timber Expo include wood fibre insulation specialist Steico, high quality timber garden product manufacturer Jagram and complete panel products supplier Hanson Plywood, to name but a few. Nathan Garnett, event director

for Timber Expo, comments: “As the UK’s only dedicated timber event, Timber Expo 2016 provides a fantastic opportunity for the collective industry to converge on one location, network together and build new avenues for business. What’s more, with the continued support from TRADA this year,

we’ve developed an educational seminar programme guaranteed to benefit professionals at every level within the industry.” Registering to attend Timber Expo is quick, easy and free, and can be done so via the dedicated event website. timber-expo.co.uk

New clip-in parting and staff beads for sash window conservation Qwood is helping sliding sash window conservation and preservation by providing new, enhanced manufacturing solutions for the timber window industry. The company’s new sliding sash conservation range of click-in parting and staff beads embodies a unique blend of technology with traditional appearance. The latest innovative solution from Qwood is a patent pending click-in system for sash window staff and parting beads. The key benefits of the new 20mm staff and 8mm parting beads include: easy to install – cut a groove, fit the clip channel, and click the beads into place; they are long lasting; and they are rot-free thanks to Qwood’s composite material which conserves and prolongs sash window life. The new system is also a secure, one-way method to remove beading for maintenance when required, without damaging the window and beading. Also, there are no unsightly troublesome pin holes to fill. The Qwood conservation range, with integral draught-proofing sealing channels, includes: internal bars – ovolo and lamb tongue bars; external bars, putty line bars; staff beads – standard and the new click-in staff bead; parting beads –standard and the new click-in parting bead. A spokesman from Independent Joinery explains: “Since I started using Qwood beads, I haven’t had to do any remedial work on my windows post installation. Now I am able to move

FP274_pages/JL V2.indd 84

away from uPVC parting beads, which is great for my customers.” Qwood conservation click-in staff and parting beads help to make the fabrication or repair of timber sash windows faster and more efficient. Not only do they enhance the appearance, but with less maintenance they endure the elements

longer and better than traditional timber beads. Qwood will be exhibiting at W16 being held at the NEC in Birmingham in October. The company also offers a ‘try me’ pack for customers wishing to sample the product. 0161 627 4222 qwood.co.uk

ZOW organiser says digitisation is a driver behind expansion An industry-wide discussion has been initiated says Dr Olaf Plümer from DCC (right) and ZOW consultant Udo Traeger (front left)

It was about a win-win-win situation that Dr Olaf Plümer, CEO of the Daten Competence Center (DCC) in Herford, Germany spoke at the start of the industry-wide discussion on the topic of ‘Digitisation, from purchasing through to sales,’ initiated in conjunction with Clarion Events Deutschland. One of the objectives of this discussion was to define IT deficits specific to the industry. A further objective was to support the significance of ZOW, the supplier fair, as a labour and communication platform for the value-added chain in the furniture industry, according to ZOW consultant Udo Traeger. Udo and Olaf Plümer presented the workshop, which was held in July at the offices of the Herford Furniture Associations, and was attended by numerous representatives of various software companies from all over Germany. The keen interest in the topic, as well as in its presentation at the upcoming ZOW, was reflected, however, not only quantitatively, but above all in the intensive, multifaceted exchange of opinions. Tremendous potential currently unused Basically, there was mutual agreement that the furniture industry is faced with tremendous challenges associated with digitisation and, unlike in the

automobile or other branches of industry, there is a considerable need to catch up. Talk was of several years of distance away from data standardisation/ communication by the DDC. Specifically, it was the comingtogether of over 20 experts at the event, which was designed as a brainstorming exercise, to discuss WiFi availability in commerce, multi-channel strategies, process design/supply chain management of supplier-manufacturer-trade, with planning systems and visualisation options. Important information is not reaching customers The relatively spoilt final customer, including from an IT perspective, continually emerged as the crux of all efforts. Ultimately, according to the general consensus, it is the final customer who pays for all those involved in the processes and for whom all those involved work. However, the furniture industry only has a few successful experiences to counteract the demanding wishes of consumers. Although a wall has been scaled in the form of prosperous online trade, it is not yet possible to transport to the customer the current range of offers pertaining to furnishing and interior design solutions. Guests and organisers of this kick-off event on the topic of digitisation quickly agreed that an

“Never before has so much IT expertise come together – we are glad to have taken the initiative as ZOW” Udo Traeger from ZOW organiser Clarion Events Deutschland

“Software firms, IT service providers, trade fair organisers and Daten Competence Center all at one table – who, if not we, will resolve the digitisation tailback in the furniture industry?” DCC CEO Dr Plümer

industry event such as the ZOW, with its communication platform ZOW Update, offers opportunities for tackling the digital deficits in the industry as quickly as possible. Thanks were continually heaped on the host, since it was the DCC and ZOW organiser Clarion that ultimately enabled this exchange. IT offensive for ZOW 2017 The representatives of the IT and software companies support the intention of focusing on the digitisation of the entire valueadded chain of furniture as the main topic at the upcoming ZOW to be held in Bad Salzuflen between 7-9th

February 2017. To this end, the exhibiting companies wish to extend targeted invitations to the pertinent partners from the field of trade and industry. The majority clearly prefers a joint exhibition area whereby it is clearly and compactly conveyed that the topic of digitisation is being communicated. “If attendance at the ZOW can demonstrate intelligent ways of process optimisation and cost reductions in the furniture industry,” summarised Udo Traeger, “then today’s exchange has been the first success.” zow.de

PVC Coating International would like to introduce GlossMax by Kastamonu, the Turkish manufacturer of high gloss panels • Super high gloss, high scratch resistance • Available in full sheet 2800 x 2100 x 18mm, Cookstown Panel Centre also have the ability to cut and edge • A full range of colours will be stocked in our Northern Ireland and Manchester based Panel Centre’s

GLOSSMAX GlossMax High Gloss panels are produced with an advanced unique technology, going through a variety of industrial processes, in which adhesive and UV lacquer is applied to melamine coated MDF or particle boards to achieve a decorative, shiny surfaced wood panel. In the hot coating process that achieves excellent adhesion to the melamine coated surface, PUR (Polyurethane) adhesive coating is applied to the melamine surface. Once the Polyurethane adhesive has gone through chemical curing an outstanding hard surface which is resistant to scratches, impacts and wear is achieved. The PUR substance is also durable against UV rays. The outer layer, which hardens with the UV rays applied directly after, provides an excellent level of gloss. This technology has forged a new path in surface coating, brought forth the natural appearance and texture of solid wood and provided a solution which has simplified the surface finish application. GlossMax panels create modern, graceful furniture combinations with mirrorshine for kitchen, bath, home, office and all other decoration projects.

The GlossMax glossy panels resistant to wear, impact and scratches, reflects the naturalness of wood and enriches interiors with a variety of colors and a mirror like gloss. The GlossMax glossy panel products used in furniture production as an example of stylishness and quality, have started a whole new era in the sector with a technology that maintains its glossy appearance for a long time.
