me that it would be fun to create a GENLUX editorial with Neil—a reunion shoot with model Scott Jansen, one of the gents who appeared in many of the original St. John ads. She convinced Neil, who had since moved to London, to fly in for our shoot.

Neil was full of energy, and he demanded the same of his subjects. At one point, he directed Scott to pick up Kelly, which he did. It was the money shot. Neil rarely took more than a few shots from any one angle before moving on. After years of experience, he understood that spontaneity was the secret sauce to capturing the essence of a moment. It was a blessing to witness his genius at work; it would be his last shoot in America. May Neil Kirk rest in heavenly peace. G

STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Everyone loves a good success story. You may recognize our lovely cover girl as Chriselle Lim —one of the darlings of the fashion world. Her 1.4 million Instagram followers hang on her every post for her chic style and beauty advice. Recently, Chriselle launched PHLUR , her own successful collection of delicious scents that are flying off the Sephora shelves.
What you don’t know about Chriselle is that she got her start as a GENLUX magazine intern after graduating from FIDM. She quickly rose to an editor position, amped up her social media game and is now courted by many—if not all—of the luxury brands in hopes she’ll sit front row at their shows.
I’m convinced Coco will follow the same career trajectory as Chriselle. Check out her work for yourself (p114) Glamming our cover was Uzo, the NARS international lead makeup artist, our usual go-to hairstylist, Robert Steinken, who created the day’s on-point hair looks, and Amber Studer, who does the best photo-ready mani/pedi.
Sadly, last month, our photo community lost one of its treasures. Fashion photographer Neil Kirk died at 74. The self-taught shooter was famous for his on-location work during the supermodel ʼ90s when he created iconic images of Linda, Christy, Naomi, Claudia, Helena, and Yasmin, and for brands like Hugo Boss, Guess, and Lanvin. Perhaps some of his best-known work was the long-running campaign of cheeky ads for St. John when Kelly Gray was the brand’s featured model sandwiched between a gaggle of hunky guys shot on locations around the world.
In 2019, at a party at the home of Nikki Sixx from Mötley Crüe, I met Kelly, who had partnered with Nikki on a rocker fashion collection. The next day, Kelly emailed

What’s next? I feel like I’m opening new doors and standing in the doorway. They’re producing a movie about me called The Girl from 7th Avenue, Pat Cleveland, & the Runway Revolution. I’m singing in it and working with songwriter Maurice Lynch and producer Ray Chew.

Cancer battle? Fashion saved my life because I had a show the next day, and nothing would fit. I wasn’t eating, and my stomach blew up like a giant watermelon. So I went to the doctor and asked him if I would be okay because I had a show the next day for Lancôme. The dress was so beautiful, but I didn’t make it: I was in the hospital for a month.
Your art? I’m doing a series called “My Healing Journey.” A few years ago, I had colon cancer. These paintings show what it was like coming back to life and how the spirit became happier and happier coming out of the dark. It’s colorful, and I love rainbows, so there are a lot of them.
Favorite fashion? Some people like to eat cake; I want a dress. Some people want a bottle of wine; I want a dress. Dresses have always been my good fortune. They change your mind and make you look so dignified. I’m thankful to all the designers who trust me to wear their dresses.
Biggest worry? My kids, whom I love. My kids are grown up with no age. I have two, one for each hand. Noel and Anna. My daughter and son grew up in Italy. My son speaks five languages.
Favorite photographer? My husband. He was doing a shoot for Playboy, and I was playing the lesbian lover of model Apollonia van Ravenstein. Here was this beautiful boy standing in front of the light. I said to her, don’t go after him, he’s mine! I went to talk to him, and when I returned, she said he’s my brother! Now she’s my sister-in-law.
You’re wearing? Harem pants and a gray T-shirt, and I have my hair in a braid. The wonderful thing about harem pants is they’re not cut high in the crotch, so I can fold myself in any position. I’m sitting in my window seat with my legs folded near my chest because I feel comfortable like that.
Favorite dream? I’m floating above my body and watching people I’m praying over, and I find myself crying over their wellness and peace. If I see the slightest glimmer of light in anyone in my dreams, I go to them and let them know I’m thinking of them.

Your childhood? I’m from Manhattan. I grew up in Bloomingdale’s and I grew up at the Metropolitan Museum. After school, I’d love to go to the museum and stare at the statue of David. Mmmmm!
Artist friends? I fell in love with artists because they would sit still but still be busy. I scribbling with artists like Antonio. I remember drawing on napkins with Karl Lagerfeld and Salvador Dali. I’ve modeled for painters and sculptors and have art from Andy Warhol, Victor Hugo, and Karl.

Saving grace? Thank God I was vegan. You can’t say I’m full of it because I only have a small intestine. I have the couture cut, which is when they cut you down the middle. You don’t get the bloated handlebar sides anymore because you don’t have a large intestine. So I told the surgeon, “This is great!” He told me to send my fashion friends, but no, let’s not make this popular.

GoFundMe? I’m alive today because my fashion friends donated to get me out of the hospital. Recently, I went to the Yogananda Gardens in California and saw a lady there. I complimented her on her hat, and she asked, “Aren’t you Pat Cleveland?” I answered, “Yes,” and she said she donated to my GoFundMe. I hugged her so deeply and said that’s why I was meant to be there—to thank her. You don’t know how much you’re loved sometimes. Just when you think you’re not loved, you are.
Spiritual path? I’ve been zigzagging most of my life. When I was little, I went to the Baptist church, and everybody was singing, and the music was good. Then I prayed to the Madonna in the Catholic church, and then I had a Jewish boyfriend and ate Borscht, and then I met a guru and twisted myself into a pretzel. And then, I got a spiritual name and met Gurumayi Chidvilasananda, Shaktipat, and the Dalai Lama. I’ve spent a lot of time in the presence of gurus because when you have to heal yourself, you have to be around healing people.
Your pets? I have peacocks. When they’re not mating, they take off those evening clothes. I learned that the females are not attracted to the feathers but because of
how the male peacocks shake their moneymaker backs. So, let’s get real here. I tell you, I was shaking my moneymaker in those dresses for our GENLUX shoot. Those dresses were turning me on.
Guilty pleasure? Ordering on Amazon in the middle of the night. I love crystals that reflect rainbows, and I just can’t get enough of them.
Interview cover? I was on the second color cover of Interview. Berry Berenson took the photo, and Richard Bernstein painted it. I hung out at Andy Warhol’s Factory. We were all teenagers acting like grownups back then, and I still feel like a teenager living an adult life.
PATCLEVELAND
Your heroes? Diana Vreeland, my mom, and my godmother, Henrietta Metcalfe, married to the famous painter Willard Metcalfe. And my other godmother, Marian Anderson.
Your breakfast? A smoothie with banana, blueberry, and cilantro. In the winter, I’ll have vegan blueberry pancakes. I’ve been vegan for 20 years and like nourishing what I have. Honey, I put oil in my engine, gas in my tank, and air in my tires. So I take care of myself.
Current GPS? I’m in New Jersey, close to Cherry Hill. I’m going to go outside now and take my cup of tea. So now, I’m out in the garden. There’s a breeze. It’s a beautiful day, and the pool is sparkling. I feel so grateful. Every day is a dream come true. I’m happy.
Hoarder trait? I’m trying not to collect dust. I try to be minimalistic, but every closet and every surface of my home is covered with books, clothes, and art— that’s it. They’re all beautiful to me.
Beauty secret? I think of myself as a tree. You’ll never have it if you’re not rooted in true beauty. For me, beauty is so deep and indescribable, and I don’t know what it is from one day to the next. I just try to stay clean and try to respect my body. I’m a Reiki master, and I’ve learned to care for myself more deeply and spiritually. That’s my beauty secret!
Favorite getaway? Right here at my pool. I’m grateful for what I have. I love summer places. I lived in Northern Italy for 20 years while owning a model agency in Milan. It went pretty well. I had Tyra Banks and Naomi. I was also doing choreography and music.

San Antonio-born Elizabeth Chambers remembers wanting to be a talk show host like Oprah since she was six years old. Instead, her 5-11 frame and beauty launched her modeling and acting career, and today, she runs the successful group of Bird Bakeries she founded in 2012. During our GENLUX Two-Word interview, Elizabeth reveals that—for better or worse—life doesn’t always work out as planned.
Your home? LA is my home. I’ve lived here for 22 years, but we’ve lived in the Cayman Islands for the last few years as the island was on COVID lockdown— COVID didn’t exist there. There were no masks, and we had inperson schooling. A few weeks turned into two years. I was going through public personal things with my marriage, so it was a cocoon of safety, solace, and healing. It felt right at the time. I had my eat, pray, love moment.
Saturday sched? I’m taking the kids to a nature reserve in Sylmar. Before I go back to the sand and sea, I’m going to get my hair under control with a smoothing treatment by Cassondra Kaeding.
Biggest fear? Something happening to my children. I pray a lot throughout the day, and my first is for the protection and wellbeing of my children.
Your sign? I’m a double Leo. I am a Leo to a T. They’re confident, love life, love attention. I love people and going into the world. Fire, fire, fire! Everything is very extreme and big and bold!

First jobs? I modeled in the 3rd grade for GAP Kids. When I was 15, I worked at a smoothie shop called Juice Stop. When I got my first paycheck, I thought it was a mistake because I was used to my modeling rate. It was not a
Spiritual path? I’m Episcopalian, and my faith in God is everything. I’m not someone who imposes my beliefs on others. I’ve gone through a lot in the past two and a half years.
Procrastinator trait? I feel I do my best work under pressure. Pressure makes diamonds, right? I feel like I focus and feel more passionate if there’s a deadline.
Your hero? My grandmother! She grew up in London—so proper and lovely. She stood only 5 ft 1 in. She met my grandfather, 6 ft 9 in, who was from Mississippi. She was taken aback by people who ate TV dinners and canned food. When my grandfather passed away, my mom went to college at Trinity University in San Antonio. I ended up opening my first Bird Bakery in San Antonio.
Beauty secrets? I love PRP (platelet-rich plasma). Forever I was doing this amazing gold micro-infusion facial by Dr. Lara Devgan, where they take your platelets, mix them with vitamins and antioxidants, place the mixture in a little vial, and stamp it onto your face. It sounds intimidating, but it works. Profhilo also works, where they inject pure hyaluronic acid on the face and neck. There’s no added volume; it simply moisturizes from the inside to improve skin texture. Fillers scare me.
Your childhood? I was born in San Antonio and grew up in Half Moon Bay, 25 miles south of San Francisco—a small, beautiful coastal community where we lived because my dad was in the wine business. He developed a heart condition right before I started high school, so we moved to Denver, Colorado.
Character change? I have a horrible habit of being late. When I’m on my deathbed, I’ll wonder what my life would be like if I were on time. Every year, I say I’m going to change. I’m taking responsibility, but my mom and dad are habitually late, so I wonder if it’s genetic.
Self advice? I’d tell my younger self not to worry about everything as much and not to focus exclusively on a career path. I was a complete workaholic and competitive through my 30s. I didn’t go to movies or bars because that would waste time. I didn’t have a drink until I was 25, and I’ve never smoked a cigarette. I was always a rule follower. My career goals were nonnegotiable.
Spirit animal? A lion, of course. I’m a Leo! Fierce, powerful, queen of the jungle, caretaker of the babies. Getting things done and looking fabulous while doing it.
Childhood bullying? I went to St. Matthews, a private elementary school in San Mateo—more than an hour’s drive each way. I attended public school in 8th grade and was relentlessly teased for being preppy. I remember I got Airwalks and tried so hard to be a California surfer girl.
mistake, so I went back to modeling. As a high school senior, I was offered a contract to model in Tokyo for four months. All my teachers gave me As in the second semester so that I could experience this opportunity and keep my GPA to get college acceptance. What an extraordinary gift those teachers gave me.
Charity work? At Bird Bakeries, we give back every day. At the end of the day, whatever is left is given to a local charity. We also do a ‘Cupcake for a Cause,’ with 100% of the proceeds going to that cause. We love to give back to our communities. You can have an incredible product, branding, and marketing, but you have nothing if you don’t have a community that embraces you. We have three shops: San Antonio, Dallas, and Denver. People ask how I choose our locations. I open where I have friends and family, otherwise known as childcare. I need to have my village wherever I open. Ayahuasca journey? I have a lot of friends who swear by it. I love my brain chemistry. Maybe if I did it, I’d be early for everything. Who knows? I love the idea of that journey, but I don’t want to mess with what’s working.
Broadcast career? After graduating from UT in journalism, my first full-time broadcast job was on Channel One, which became Current, Al Gore’s network.
Oprah sighting? Twice. The first time, I interviewed her on the red carpet. The second time I was in Chicago and went to a taping of The Oprah Show. She asked the audience if anyone knew of a florist in Denver, so I raised my hand. She said, “Wait, I feel like we know each other.” I doubt she remembered me from our brief encounter, but we do have an interesting connection. Because of the horrible societal challenges facing black people in Mississippi at the time, her family was not allowed a proper cemetery burial, so they’re all buried in the tree farm my family owns.
You’re wearing? I’m in my bathrobe, enjoying a salmon Benedict.
Your reading? I’m obsessed with Elin Hilderbrand and her waspy Nantucket escapist dramas. My friends make fun of me for loving her writing, but she describes food in the most visceral way.
Youth goals? Since first grade, I have wanted to be a talk show host. It’s the only thing I ever wanted to do for a living. Oprah made such an impression on me. She was the one and only—the ultimate and supreme example.
What’s next? I’m excited to return to LA and possibly open a fourth Bird Bakery. Most of us are ready to shine brightly again and experience a time of renewal and resurgence. I certainly am, especially considering my personal journey over the last couple of years—so I’m excited to hit the ground running!

I, along with the whole of London, am mourning in simple black dresses, with the men respectfully donned in tails. There have been five Queens since the 1540s— all marvelous in their modern times. Lucky for Great Britain, Elizabeth was undoubtedly great.
There is an outpouring of love towards the Queen, with people from around the world laying flowers at the gates of Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. May she forever rest in peace. G

The carrot root will acquire its maximum color and sweetness when the air temperature is between 60 to 70 degrees, three weeks before harvest. Knowing that most varieties of carrots take 60-80 days until harvest, and given that AccuWeather’s forecast for Los Angeles highs this November and December should be between 60-70’s, verifies that now is the optimum time to plant your carrots!

DRAGON CARROTS - flavor is spicy-sweet, kids love them because of their name and deep purple and red color on the outside, and vibrant orange inside.
Carrots germinate slowly compared to almost every other cool-weather vegetable. Seeds are teeny tiny and need to sow shallowly and stay moist until they get going. Once dried out, they die! So planting them while the soil is still warm, early in the fall, and germinating 6 or 7 days, compared to a whopping 15 to 17 days in cooler weather. Carefully water daily, avoiding washing off the soil covering the seeds.

It’s Prime Time for Planting Carrots
Most often, when carrots turn out small or underdeveloped, it is because the soil is not loose enough for them. Loosen heavy soil by amending it with sand or broken down leaves or gypsum. Carrots especially tend to struggle in clay soil.

Heavy clay or compacted soils can cause the roots to fork. For heavy soil, amend your soil several months ahead of time with compost and chicken manure before planting. Avoid excess nitrogen, which can cause big, bushy tops, branching, and hairy, fibrous roots.

Put your seeds in a little saucer. Pinch the seeds between your fingers and sprinkle the seeds in the indented row.
Bugs love to eat your carrot seedlings as soon as they sprout. Snails, slugs, pill bugs, and earwigs are their biggest threat. Eliminate hiding places like mulch, cracks, and crevices where they can hide. Once the sun goes down, the darn pests will move in and mow down your entire crop lickety-split!

Water your bed daily and thoroughly when you sow your seeds, keeping the top 2 inches moist but not soggy. Once the carrot plants are an inch tall, stop watering. Once the top few inches of soil has dried out and you notice that the tiny plants start to wilt, you can resume with a deep watering. Letting the soil dry out before the next watering will train the roots to grow straight down.

SAVING SEEDS
Carrots are biennials, meaning it takes two years to grow from seed to fruition and die. In the first year, their leaves gather energy from the sun to build a big, starchy root and store their energy over the winter. The following year they’ll use that energy to shoot up a tall umbrella of white flowers, resembling Queen Anne’s Lace. Eventually, the blooms will dry and turn to seeds just in time to plant them for the following cool season.
