STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE When it comes to fashion magazines, I am, admittedly, a big ol’ hoarder. Like many of you, it pains me to even think about throwing them away. In the den, in the corners of closets, in the garage (true, we can no longer park cars there) and on every bookshelf are stacks upon stacks of American and British Harper’s Bazaar, and every iteration of VOGUE—British, Italian, Japanese, and French. I have pristine (many unwrapped) copies of Numero, Pop, 10, Flaunt, Love, and Carine Roitfeld’s CR Fashion Trend. Sure, I’ve not opened most of these issues in years, but I intend to. Another heartwrenching reality is that some of our most valued print titles are fading into the sunset. Among them, one of my favorites, Interview, shuttered earlier this year, only to be revived (thank you Peter Brant) last month. I’m hoping there are enough readers who cherish the tactile experience of flipping printed pages to fan the narrowing flame. We count our blessings that GENLUX is still printing after fifteen years. It’s a passion project fueled by those who share a love of fashion, photography, and by our featured subjects, who, for the most part, are advocates of giving back. One such story is the young Mason Grammer (p16), the daughter of Kelsey and Camille Grammer, who’s described by her model agent, David Todd, as the new It girl. She’s endured childhood challenges (parent’s divorce playing out on reality TV, Camille’s cancer) only to emerge stronger and with an inspired drive to help others.
Liza Minelli for Interview by Richard Bernstein
Also featured in this issue are two young actresses polishing their chops on hit TV shows. Jessica Parker Kennedy (p44) is the small screen’s newest superhero starring on The CW’s The Flash, and Victoria Konefal (p30) is the stunner who stars as Ciara Brady on the NBC soap opera Days of Our Lives. Talk about longevity, Days has been running every week since 1965.
Now, let’s journey into the future, where you happen to catch an episode of Antiques Roadshow. As the camera pans across a mountain of magazines, the expert on the subject of ephemera waxes ad nauseam about their pristine condition. He asks the mandatory question: “Any idea how much this collection might be worth?” Then, he says, “I would place a value on your collection of Vogue, Bazaar, etc., at about $500. However, this breathtaking collection of GENLUX magazines is, well,” he says, choking back tears, “priceless.”
Update: Tragically, only weeks after the photographing Mason at her mother’s beautiful home, it was lost to the unforgiving Southern California fires. Thankfully, no one was physically injured. Our prayers of love and comfort go out to Camille and Mason and all of those affected by the fires.
16 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2018
While most mistakenly believe those Interview covers were created by the magazine’s founder, Andy Warhol, they were actually the work of artist Richard Bernstein. Last month, in tribute to his technicolor brilliance, Rizzoli published Starmaker, a book showcasing Bernstein’s Warholesque portraits.

Stars included Maya Rudolph, Malin Ackerman, Constance Zimmer, and Amy Smart. dame’s collection is comprised of both vintage and hand-crafted, cut and sewn pieces manufactured in downtown LA using a fair-wage policy. The founders also use ‘dead stock’ (residual fabrics left over from major fashion houses) as their prime material for the non-vintage collection. “Women shouldn’t sacrifice fashion for principals,” said dame founders Alexx Monkarsh, Molly Levin and Wells Butler. “Our goal at dame is to make stylish, but unfussy wardrobes for women who care about sustainable fashion.” Currently, dame is available exclusively at shopatdame.com

Divorce is hell, and, like civilians in war, children are its collateral damage. So, when actor Kelsey Grammer (Cheers, Frasier) and Camille (T he House wives of Beverly Hills), split in 2010, 8-year-old Mason and her brother, Jude, 5, were swept into the agonizing wake of a reality-show split. “It was the hardest time of my life,” says Mason. “I changed a lot after that. I had to grow up faster because I had a lot more responsibilities. My dad wasn’t around, so I didn’t see him much, and my mom had such a hard time. I became my younger brother’s mom. Everyone was on edge. My parents still don’t talk. At all. Ever.” Time heals all wounds, but from Camille’s perspective, these may take a little longer. “It was a very difficult time for us when Kelsey left,” Camille says, “Our lives were turned upside down and how it happened was painful. When you’re used to having your partner by your side, it’s a whole new reality. My biggest concern was how my children would react and how to protect them and to help get them through the hurt feelings of loss and abandonment. My children understand it wasn’t about them. We all went to therapy, and Mason got into dancing and soccer. It’s cathartic to stay active and work out. Both of my kids love their father very much. I’m proud of them. I have great children. They’re loving and caring and kind and sensitive and empathetic. It’s true, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” For now, Mason and Dad are very close. “I can talk to him about everything,” Mason says, with hopes of following in his footsteps, “I’d like to go to USC or NYU for film and eventually get into producing or directing.” Today, Mason is wearing Brandy Melville black cargo pants with black Converse shoes, and a white T sporting the Faith American Ale logo— the beer company that Kelsey owns. She shares how she began noticing her dad was somehow different. “I was about five, and strangers would
always come up to him and ask for pictures, and the paparazzi were always following us. I soon realized he was famous.” She also suspects that her grades—both good and bad—have often been a reflection of her teacher’s fondness or dislike of her dad. Shortly following the contentious divorce and more bad news surfaced, Camille was diagnosed with cancer—something she decided to shield from her children. “Mom didn’t talk about it a lot in front of us because we were so young at the time,” Mason says, “I think I was 10 and my brother was only 7. She had to go to Houston for her cancer treatments because they were the best in the country, so we had a nanny to take care of us. We had many nannies over the years.” Camille overcame the cancer, but it returned in 2017. She beat it again. She’s two for two. “My mom is my hero,” Mason declares, “She’s been through so much, but in the end, she always comes out stronger. She’s an amazing woman who never gives up. I love her so much.” The pair devotes their charity time to the Foundation for Women’s Cancer. “Every year, we go to the 5K race/walk in Washington, DC.,” Mason says, “I’m also part of the Operation Smile club that helps children with cleft palates.” With her eyes set on college, Mason’s primary focus is on her education and getting good grades. Recently, though, she signed with the prestigious David Todd Model Management (the agency of superstars like Ireland Baldwin and Lydia Hearst), and the last three years have diverted her to New York to walk the runway at Fashion Week for prominent brands like Malan Breton and Nicole Miller. In David Todd’s email announcing the addition of Mason to their model roster, he added five prophetic words to the subject line, Mason Grammer—New ‘IT’ Girl!

MAD GIRL’S LOVE SONG BY SYLVIA PLATH, 1951 I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead; I lift my lids and all is born again. (I think I made you up inside my head.) The stars go waltzing out in blue and red, And arbitrary blackness gallops in: I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead. I dreamed that you bewitched me into bed And sung me moon-struck, kissed me quite insane. (I think I made you up inside my head.) God topples from the sky, hell’s fires fade: Exit seraphim and Satan’s men: I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead. I fancied you’d return the way you said, But I grow old and I forget your name. (I think I made you up inside my head.) I should have loved a thunderbird instead; At least when spring comes they roar back again. I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead. (I think I made you up inside my head.)

GENLU
Victoria Konefal is having a cup of tea. She’s wearing Adidas workout clothes in the dining room of her LA apartment, where, she agrees to answer our GENLUX Two-Word Questionnaire.
IEW
Victoria Konefal dreamt of one day becoming a mermaid. The Polish-American actress, who plays Ciara on NBC’s Days of our Lives, is all grown up, and now, not surprisingly, stands behind ocean causes like Greenpeace and Heal the Bay. Truth be told, she’d still gladly trade places with the Little Mermaid any day.
Your breakfast? What I have everyday—a piece of brown rice toast topped with avocado, turkey, Cayenne pepper and Himalayan salt. Some yogurt topped with berries and granola on the side. First job? I worked at my mom’s law firm. I’d take papers to court to be notarized. It was great to learn the legal system. Role model? My mother. She moved to America when she was nineteen and created a law empire for herself. Trading places? I might pull the cliché answer and say I wouldn’t want to trade with anyone because I’m thankful for where I’m at in my life, but if I had to, I’d trade places with the Little Mermaid. Three blessings? My family, my friends and the fact that I get to do what I love as my job. Your passion? My selfish artistic passion is anything that has to do with creativity. And then my life’s passion is to help people and to make them feel happy. Risk taker? Absolutely, my rule is: I’m going to regret it if I don’t try it, and, what’s the worst that can happen? Early dues? There was a time when I’d eat eggs and cereal every day because I couldn’t afford anything else.
Photographer: EMBRY LOPEZ / @embrylopez Stylist: YESENIA CUEVAS / YeseniaCuevas.com Hair: JERRY CHANG / Carlton Hair Creative Director Makeup: UZO for NARS / @u.z.o Makeup assistant: ALIX MIRMAN Art Direction: STEPHEN KAMIFUJI @genlux
Fame game? My motivation in being an actress isn’t to be famous. The craft of acting entrances me. I couldn’t believe there was a way to play pretend and make a living at it. Procrastinate much? Always have been—always will be. Not proud of it.
DNA change? I have a temper, and I’ve actively been working on it. Actor crush? Leo DiCaprio. I’d fall over and die if I was cast in a movie with him. I haven’t met him, but I want to. I will. Best trait? Probably my hunger for life—that was said recently by a couple of people. Favorite feature? My eyes. I also think it’s everyone’s best feature because it’s how you can look into their soul and communicate with them. First heartbreak? My heart was broken was in the 6th grade. I had been crushing on this boy, John, since kindergarten. He finally asked me to be his girlfriend two days before Valentine’s Day, which also happened to be his birthday. I got really excited and bought him a Justin Timberlake CD because Justin was his favorite. So I wrapped the CD and gave it to him and went to hug him. He told me, ‘What are you talking about, that was a joke. I didn’t actually ask you out.’ Then, he turned around and walked away with these other girls. That was the most heartbreaking moment. I was shattered! Spirit animal? A mermaid. Yes, The Little Mermaid was my favorite Disney movie. I would take towels and wrap them around my body and try to roll around the apartment. I always wanted to be a mermaid and swim to the bottom of the ocean. The ocean has always called to me. What’s next? Lots! And I have a year left on Days of Our Lives.

Hey, Victoria, please rate yourself on a scale of 1-10. Competitive: 9. I’m especially competitive in sports and board games like Yahtzee! I get very loud. Internally, every time I lose I turn the table over. We get angry with each other’s success. Romantic: 10. I love love. I always have. Love is so important! Sensitive: Mmmm, a 5. I think I’ve desensitized myself being in this industry. I’ve learned to let things go. Affectionate: 10. I’m very cuddly. I love holding hands and hugging. Especially with my dog! I cuddle with my dog 24/7. Lola is her name. I love her! She’s a miniature Schnauzer. Driven: 10. Very driven. My passion is behind everything I do in life. Fashionable: In New York, I’m a 10; in LA, I’m a 6. Forgiving: 7.5. It’s something that I have to work on. I’m usually pretty forgiving, but I don’t forget and that’s what holds me back from entirely being able to forgive. I always remember, and I’ll think, if you’re capable of doing that you’re capable of doing something else and it stays in my head. Temperamental: I’m going to be kind to myself and say a 9. I won’t go with 10. You know, I’ll say 8.5—final answer. It’s something I’ve been working on it. Critical: Hmm. Of myself, I’m my own worse critic, so I’m a 10. I compare myself to what I’m capable of, and I’m harsh on myself. If it’s constructive criticism, another 10, because I’ll absolutely take part in it. But when criticizing for small things, I give myself a 0. I think I gave you three numbers there. Jessica, please rate yourself on a scale of 1-10. Competitive? 7 I’ve never been very competitive. It makes me uncomfortable. Romantic? 6 Much to the chagrin of a few guys I’ve dated, I just find stereotypical romantic things sort of nauseating. I love romantic movies though. Temperamental? 5 I have my moments. Sensitive? 6 I used to be very sensitive. Not anymore. This industry can be a detriment to self esteem. You either have to get a thick skin or you’re in trouble. Affectionate? 7 Very, very. Driven? 9 Very, very. You can’t be an actor and not have drive or you’ll never work. Fashionable? 7 I love fashion so, so much. But on set I’m in sweats everyday. Forgiving? 2 I can forgive, but not easily, and I never forget. Critical? 8 I have very high expectations of people. I don’t trust anyone until I get to know them and they’ve proven themselves trustworthy.

“I have 19 tattoos,” model Teela Laroux Cull shares, “I have ‘La Belle Vie,’ on the back of my neck because while I was living in Paris it was “a beautiful life.” On my collarbone: “I have ‘Amour Fati,’ which is Latin for Love your Fate or Embracing your Fate. It’s a philosophy of whatever happens, happens.” On the side of my neck: “My grandma passed away two years ago and I grew up as a grandma’s girl, so I have ‘Gram’s Girl.’ The tattoo artist traced her writing from a greeting card she had written to me.” On my left wrist: “Roman numerals ‘ xxix-iii-mmxii ’ the day of my nieces birth.” On my right hand: “‘Whiskey neat,’ is self explanatory, right? I love whiskey.” On my right arm: “A single rose for my grandmother. She always loved her roses and had the best I’d ever seen.” On my left arm: “I have an anatomical heart with flowers and buds blooming. It’s likely one of my most meaningful tattoos. The heart is the center of life, the roots/veins in the heart represent being grounded, the flowers represent being alive, and the buds are the growth process. The symbolic representation of the heart is strength, growth, passion.” On my right arm: “‘Breathe,’ is a constant reminder—through all of life—to just breathe. Something we often forget to do.” On the back of left arm: “It says, ‘No one knows you are my favorite drug,’ because the most powerful drug I’ve ever experienced was a human being.” Over my heart: “I have an EKG wave to remind me to have a little daily gratitude and to take advantage of being alive.” On my right ribcage: “Is an important one. I have the word ‘Strength,’ with the ‘S’ being the Neda symbol—a symbol that represents eating disorder recovery— the strength it takes to overcome addiction and ED recovery.”

76 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2018
There’s no doubt I have enough clothes. My London closet is bursting with things—primarily in black—from which I make my daily picks. Never satisfied, I recently ordered a bespoke, light wool black tailcoat from designer Joshua Kane—a fantastic piece with gold butterflies. Joshua is a Charles II look-alike with great charm and finesse. His atelier is in the heart of London and is full of jet black exotica. Think Edwardian glamour with a twist. He dresses the stars of London and epitomizes everything I love about British Fashion and he falls in line with my other favourites like Ralph & Russo, Alexander McQueen (by the way, the new Amber Garden fragrance is divine), and CHANEL. As you may know, I am a huge fan of gothic looks, and this year, in place of my hats I’m all about accessorizing with Anne Demeulemeester’s long black cashmere gloves. She’s one of the Antwerp Six—those designers who studied under Linda Loppa. Another top designer, Dries Van Noten, is also a party to that prestigious tribe. With two Royal Weddings behind us, I have been studying the art of the wedding dress. Meghan favoured Givenchy; while Eugenie opted for Peter Pilotto. In the crowd, Cara Delevigne stole the show in her ‘girl as boy’ top hat and tails—following in the footsteps of the magnificent Ms. Marlene Dietrich. I’m off to Los Angeles where I can’t wait to rush down to Dover Street Market when I land. It is my favourite shop of all time in London and so thrilled it’s also in Lalaland. With a passion for Comme des Garҫons; it cannot fail. If your sweet tooth is calling, may I suggest the delicious skull truffles from Diggle Chocolates? The company offers a carefully curated range of artisan truffles, all handmade to order by Philippa Diggle, a Cordon Bleu-trained chocolatier based in London. digglechocolates.com

THE RHINESTONE COWBOY ...BOOT
Dolce Gabbana is taking the fall fashion season by storm with this blindingly be-dazzled cowboy boot! When I heard they were coming back ontrend I was beyond thrilled that I kept my 10-year-old Giuseppe Zanotti gold glitter boots. But even those pale in comparison to these stunning little gems. These crystal-encrusted boots are so luxurious that even the dullest of outfits come to life. Dolce is letting us know, without a doubt, the cowboy boot is here to stay...well, at least for a season or two. Dolce & Gabbana cowboy boot, $6500, Dolce Gabbana, Beverly Hills, 310-888-8701
CLOSET DESIGN BIBLE
COOL COAT
Back in the day, closets were merely used to house clothing and shoes. Those days are gone—enter Lisa Adams of LA Closet Design. Lisa’s new book, Closet Design Bible, is a compilation of luxury closets that span the world over a ten year span. Her clientele includes everyone from A-list actors to world-renowned sports athletes to politicians and more. Filled with expert tips and insider advice on how we too can worship at the altar of closet design and luxury. This eye candy book gives readers an inside look at the custom features that Lisa’s closets are known for and the details of personal sanctuaries—some published for the very first time. Closet Design Bible, $28.95, Barnes and Noble
When I first laid eyes upon this sculptural column-like coat, I just about fainted. Talk about “A Handmaid’s Tale!” These architectural designs by Valentino creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, in collaboration with Moncler, are so striking in appearance and so fashion forward, that they don’t resemble anything Moncler has done before. The color blocking puffer shapes look like they’ve magically transformed into austere gowns ready to float down the red carpet on their own. I have been desperately seeking this coat for a year now! I am waiting patiently, barely able to breathe. MONCLER, Beverly Hills, 424-354-4562

GENLUX Surf City S’mores
Huntington Beach, the fabled surfside town that Jan Berry and Brian Wilson penned about in Surf City, is home to the revamped Hyatt Regency. DAVID THOMAS heads there for some local laidback luxury.
The revamped Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa is the primo surfer weekend staycation where it doesn’t take much luck to catch some gnarly waves. It’s one of our new favorite resorts for a local SoCal beachside break. The hotel has scrumptious food, a private footbridge to the beach, its own private mini main street, and a serene spa. The large suite — with plenty of space for my favorite longboard — overlooks the pool. A s’mores kit with fresh strawberries patiently awaits to be roasted over the fire pit on our private patio. The resort, with its 517 guest rooms and 57 suites, is the epitome of laidback luxury. hyattregency.com
MUST STAY: S’more, please. Mmmelted chocolate over marshmallows and graham crackers—straight from the firepit of your private patio.

MUST DINE:
Beeswax honey and mustard charcuterie kicked-off an artful evening of fantastic seafood and wine at The Watertable. Modeled to feel like your favorite home kitchen, it is relaxed yet luxurious. Chef Manfred Lassahn designs a menu blending old and new, rustic and refined. We left full and satisfied by the uniquely artful flavors and textures.
MUST SPA:
The tranquil Pacific Waters Spa has a Mediterranean vibe that takes notes from the SoCal waters off the coast of the resort. The Sea ‘Scapes Massage package left us feeling refreshed after a “busy” day chilling by the beach and lounging in the heated lagoon style pool.
MUST TRY: This is where the surf industry gets ideas for culture and new surf moves, and where pro surfers like Kanoa Igarashi grew up shredding the pier. What better place to learn to surf? Or, if being grounded is more your speed, there are bike rentals for a sunny adventure day along the beach path. Cool pools. Slip or slide into the newly renovated lagoon-style Mankota’s Pool, or Slyders Water Playground Pool.

On Peaceful Mountain
Allow me to officially cross Amangiri off my travel bucket list. This peaceful paradise—a 600-acre resort with only 38 guest suites— is one of the most heart-stirring places I’ve ever visited. —Samia Amangiri, located in Canyon Point, Southern Utah, is like stepping into the future. The structures possess a right-angled minimalist architecture that stand juxtaposed against a windswept, other-worldly landscape. aman.com/resorts/amangiri.
MUST STAY:
The 1000square foot Desert View suite (right) is breathtakingly elegant. The private courtyard entrance, large bathroom with soaking tub, and big windows with views of the desert, all make the experience rather surreal. I particularly enjoyed the twin rain showers next to the bath, and outside, the firepit flickered joyfully across a canvas of endless desert.

MUST HIKE:
There are many trails to hike both in and around the property (best at sunrise or before sunset). There are also well-known canyons in the vicinity worth visiting. The resort also lends luxury automobiles to their guests, so you have no excuses not to venture out to places like Antelope Canyon (shown here). Its magnificence—took my breath away. navajoantelopecanyon.com

One of the magical moments you’ll experience at Amangiri is gazing up at the stars—billions of them—opening the door to wonders of this universe.
MUST DINE:
The resort’s single restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a relaxing, friendly ambiance. The open-plan kitchen makes you feel like you’re in your own place, or, in a best friend’s home. Time spills forward blissfully over breakfast looking out through floor-to-ceiling windows. Currently, the property features a tasting menu called The Spirit of the Journey. Chef Marazita sources ingredients from five Native American tribes creating a delightful tasting menu focused on regional game like duck, buffalo, and elk.

The Amangiri Spa focuses on restoring hózhó, which means beauty, harmony, balance and health in Navajo. Even if you don’t get a massage, a visit to the spa is an M-U-S-T! Ready for a treatment? I recommend the Grounding Massage Ritual, a Ku Nye full-body massage honoring ancient Tibetan healing traditions to stimulate muscles, while a subtler massage energizes the meridian system. Two words: Unbelievably soothing.
MUST FLY:
There are many ways to get to Amangiri, but the very best is by flying private on board JetSuite. Hop on the 4-seat Phenom 100 jet from Van Nuys airport and drop in on Page, Arizona. Looking down, the desert’s red clay gives way to snowcapped pine trees, and soaring over the Grand Canyon and Lake Powell punctuates the ride. A luxury car with a chauffeur zips you to the resort in about 20 minutes. jetsuite.com

Roughing It
At the crossroads of incomparable luxury and unspoiled Montana wilderness lies The Resort at Paws Up— an authentic working cattle ranch where, until now, you’ve never roughed it like this before. —Laura Dunn
MUST STAY:
The Resort at Paws Up sits on 37,000 sprawling acres in western Montana with two distinct lodging options. There are 26 free-standing homes, or, for you more adventurous types (who still can’t bear the idea of actual camping), there are sophisticated, safari-style ‘glamping’ tents. The tents have hardwood floors, fine linens, air conditioning, and heat, plus a private ensuite bath with heated slate floors, stylish vanities, and Montana-size showers.
MUST TRY:
Every day I was out the door at 8am and didn’t return until 10pm! I tried riding an ATV (All Terrain Vehicle), rode horseback through beautiful trails once swooned over by Lewis and Clark; I met new friends at the afternoon wine tasting hosted by Opus One and melted through soothing treatments at the spa. My biggest problem is I didn’t have enough time to do everything that Paws Up had to offer. My MOFO (Fear of Missing Out) was at an all-time high!

Exquisite cuisine is steps away in an elegant dining pavilion. Between the morning’s breakfast buffet and five-course gastro-terrific dinners created by celebrity chef Dean Fearing, this place is foodie heaven. For anything more you might require, a camping butler is always helpful.

OH, JAMES
Charles James, fashion’s original enfant terrible, was the genius designer of the 50s who inspired many who followed including Christian Dior. We catch up with Michèle Gerber Klein, author of his new biography, Charles James: Portrait of an Unreasonable Man, Fame, Fashion, Art. —SK
Illustration by Antonio Lopez who sketched hundreds of James’s designs.
Your location? I’m in the library
of my Manhattan apartment looking at my books and flowers.
Your books? On my coffee table,
I have a book by my friend and partner at the Whitney, Fiona Donovan, Reubens and England. There’s a book called Ultimate Style, which is about the best of the best-dressed list by my friend Bettina Zilkha. I have We Had Such a Good Time, the Memories of Emily Fisher Landau, and a book about Boucheron jewelry because I used to wear Boucheron all the time, and I also have a fairy tale book illustrated by Arthur Rackham. Fashion beginnings? I’m half
French, and my father loved to take me to Bergdorf Goodman when I was young to go shopping. I had an extremely good-looking, flirtatious father. He’d have all of the sales girls in a tizzy. It was a time when you’d go into a parlor and sit, and the sales girls would bring clothes.
“Even though I thought I knew everything about fashion, I didn’t know about Charles James,” quips author Michèle Gerber Klein on the phone from her apartment in New York, “So, at the request of my friend R. Couri Hay, I watched hours of videotaped interviews with James conducted over thirty years ago at the Chelsea Hotel where he lived.” The 20 hours of interviews by Hay, who was an editor at Interview magazine at the time, became the fabric that helped Klein weave a compelling new fashion biography about the man who walked the fine line between genius and manic madness: Charles James: Portrait of an Unreasonable Man, Fashion, Fame, Art. A prominent philanthropist, Klein’s own life is as interesting as her subjects. An avid art collector, she’s a student of both fashion and the arts. She chairs the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Library Committee and is a member of both the Architecture and Design and the Photography Acquisition Committees at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan. She is also on the Photography Acquisition Committee at The Whitney.

in college. It was my only heartbreak—that’s a horrible thing to say. I’m a fairly happy-go-lucky person, so I was shocked it me so long to kick it. Fur stance? All your readers are going to hate me for this, but I do wear my vintage fur. You see, New York is really cold in winter, and down coats and fake fur don’t cut it in below-zero weather—even if you’re only walking a block. So, it’s out of necessity and a comfort thing. First job? One of my first fashion jobs was picking out the clothes for the windows at Lord & Taylor on Fifth Avenue. I was in my 20’s, and it was a nice job. Greatest strength? I’m perceptive and empathetic. Character change? I’m a big
procrastinator, and I’d like to change that.
Fabulous friends? Dr. Valerie Steel, director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, is fabulous. She was a high school dropout but ended up getting her Ph.D. from Yale. Harold Koda is also fabulous. He wrote the forward to my book. Those are the two I admire the most.
Favorite decade? I like the 70s fashion because that’s when I was getting to be grown up and started to put myself together. Writing challenge? For me, writing is a visual exercise. I’m dyslexic, and I never write correctly on the computer. Your heroes? Napoleon and
Alexander the Great—I like great conquerors.
Biggest heartbreak? Oh, I remember—sure I do. Gerard Guez. It took me months to get over him. I was about 19 and still

I have that because I grew up in a partially French household. I’m not critical in the sense of being disparaging. G

Your sound? We mix a very complex musical landscape with ancient, non-English languages. Each song is designed to create a high frequency that vibrates the neurons of the brain and the cellular structure of the body to perform better. Musical benefits? Our music has been used in studies at UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Hospital led by Dr. Helen Lavretsky. White Sun is also used in Professor Stephanie Eggert’s courses at USC to study stress management. Every day, I hear ways in which listening to White Sun has helped improve people’s lives, from career breakthroughs, healing from diseases, getting off of drugs, overcoming infertility, finding love, and doing better in school. For some, the stories are nothing short of miraculous. Best gift? Meeting my teacher, Harijiwan.

masterpiece include “Jat Pahara,” “Adi Shakti” and “Say Saraswati.” The soothing vocals and rich orchestral instrumentation do well to elevate our senses toward a new vibrational level. On Instagram, singer Alicia Keys posted, ♥♥♥ “favorite songs to calm my soul.” The album is clearly worthy of a download. Here, the band’s lead singer, Gurujas Khalsa, answers our Genlux Two-Word Questionnaire.
Day shift? I would love a bit more structure in my day-to-day life. Three blessings? 1. I am grateful to be surrounded by so many incredible souls that inspire me and uplift me. 2. Music: I am so grateful that I have been given the mission to make music in this lifetime. I can’t think of anything more fulfilling, any job that I could love more. 3. Kundalini yoga: Without kundalini yoga in my life, I would be leading a different existence. The technology has made me into a more powerful version of myself. Musical influences? I don’t even know where to begin! I have been listening to Bob Dylan my entire life. Dolly Parton has composed some of the greatest songs in history. Alicia Keys is one of the most compelling performers I have ever witnessed. Outkast will always have a special place in my heart. I love Steve Aoki for his power to energize through music. I love Billie Eilish for her fearlessness. Michael Jackson and Frank Sinatra are two of the greatest entertainers this world has ever seen. Adele and Beyoncé are living legends. I could go on for days!
Your loves? White silk, pink shoes, light jewelry. I love yoga, cold showers, green juices, and music studio tech. I also enjoy working, which you’ll catch me doing most of the time. Favorite quote? My teacher Harijiwan often gives the advice, “To work smarter, not harder.” It is such a simple statement, but it can change your whole career. Greatest accomplishment? To create songs that help people, to create songs that live forever, that is my highest honor and accomplishment. We make this music to create a vibration that shifts consciousness, shifts awareness. We are leaving it behind for future generations. Favorite Charity? Imagination Library, Dolly Parton’s charity. She’s donated over 100 million books to children in need. What’s next? We have 53 songs on the street, but, eventually, I would like that number to be in the thousands. We are also planning a tour and performing live is one of the greatest feelings in the world.
