Okay, trolls, you win.

Last week, I posted our GENLUX photos of Elizabeth Chambers, the lovely ex-wife of troubled actor Armie Hammer, on Instagram. As unexpectantly as a mosquito buzzing in your ear, a nasty troll arrived with hurtful comments which I quickly deleted. Big mistake. Like poking the hornet’s nest, more negativity arrived. So I rebutted their attack by crafting a positive and well-deserved defense of Elizabeth (thinking killing them with kindness might calm them down). That only antagonized them further, and the angry, garrulous posts intensified. So I waved the white flag and reflected on what a crazy nightmare Instagram must be for people like the Kardashians.

Another celeb who fends off her unfair share of social media mayhem is our lovely and talented cover girl Katharine McPhee Foster. When Kat, 38, married David Foster, 72, their age disparity became troll fodder for days. But who can blame her? What other septuagenarian sports the coolness, charisma, and clout of a David Foster? Kat’s sparkly photo story showcases some of her new KMF Jewelry collection via photographer Robert Lynden’s photos and chic styling by Coco DiGiaimo (p76).

On November 17, David and Kat are performing songs from their new Christmas album on Rodeo Drive courtesy of the Rodeo Drive Committee, helmed by our longtime friend

Kathy Gohari. We’ll ride the coattails of that event with our issue release party. All are welcome to come stop by the KMF Jewelry pop-up and enjoy the good Holiday cheer!

Tracey Morris covered three great shoots: She shot Dasha Alexandria at LA’s excellent new vegan restaurant for Avant Garden Bistro (p36); shot top model Rainey Forkner for One Rainey Day (p44); and featured designer Louis Verdad— one of LA’s best talents—in The Other LV (p68). In New York, photog Arthur Belebeau and stylist Mimi Lombardo lit up the lens with Shiny Objects (p56), as genius product shooter Tatsuro Nishimura created stunning handbag photos for Metal Works (p28).

Thanksgiving is near, so I’d like to give special thanks and appreciation to all those photographers, stylists, glam teams, assistants, designers, PR showrooms, studio services, model agents and models who help make GENLUX possible. And, of course, to our magnificent advertisers who continue to support us along this labor-of-pure-love journey.

In the summer of 2020, I was fortunate to work with legendary lensman Douglas Kirkland at his home studio in the Hollywood Hills. It was the first and only time that we devoted an entire GENLUX issue to one photographer. In it, Douglas shot four fabulous women—Beverly Johnson, Linda Collins, Monica Fonseca, and Mosh—and we featured many of Douglas’s iconic photos of Marilyn, Brigitte Bardot, Cher, Coco Chanel, Elle Fanning, Judy Garland, and Audrey Hepburn. The highlight of the shoots—aside from watching Douglas’s childlike heart open up when he was behind the lens—was sitting down to enjoy his wife Françoise’s delicious home-cooked lunches. Sadly, earlier this month, at the age of 88, Douglas Kirkland passed away of natural causes at his home. May he forever rest in peace.

won our hearts on American Idol . These days, the successful singer/actress spends her time doting over her two favorite men: hubby David Foster and baby Rennie, and, as our STEPHEN KAMIFUJI discovers, when it comes to her passion for jewelry, she’s got her hands full.

From her hit singing career to her film, television, and Broadway stints, she’s been non-stop, and now, just in time for the Holidays, she’s launching her KMF jewelry collection. Here, Kat takes a moment during our GENLUX Two-Word Interview to share about her new world as the wife of uber-producer David Foster, what she’s binge-watching, and what she hopes her baby Rennie grows up to be.

GPS location: I’m at our home in Palm Desert. We love it here, and we never want to be in LA.

Current surroundings? I’m in a back bedroom with grey taupe shades and a cool mid-century bed, and I’m sitting at a vintage round table and chair. I have to hide from my 20-month-old son, Rennie, because he’s obsessed with me. I love that, and I’ll only have a limited amount of time when he’s so obsessed.

You’re wearing? I’m wearing my desert-chic outfit (laughs), an AOC mustard skirt, and a simple black Raquel Allegra T-shirt. They make the best and most comfortable T-shirts.

Breakfast fare? I had a delicious blueberry, kale, banana, whey protein, and almond butter smoothie.

Self-description? In five words, I’m energetic, friendly, loyal, and silly, and my husband would say I’m impatient.

Best trait? I do everything fast. It’s a good trait of mine. When I go grocery shopping, I do it fast. When I go shopping, I do it fast. When I make a decision, I do it pretty fast. When I’m getting ready and doing my own hair and makeup for an event, I do it really fast. So I never have people waiting for me. I’m always the first to set—maybe selfishly, so I can get to my bed quicker at the end of the day.

Home style? Our place in the desert is like this early-90strying-to-look-like-you’re-inItaly-even-though-you’re-inPalm Springs vibe. When we first

bought it, it had that really heavy style, so we’re slowly making it more modern.

Hubby story? Oh, my gosh! I’ve known David for 16 years. I was 21 when we met on American Idol. He mentored me when I sang one of his songs. Later, when he moved away from being a producer to an entertainer, I traveled with him and did his Foster and Friends show in Las Vegas. He recorded my first single with RCA. My life has changed a lot, but he’s been this constant.

David crush? I don’t recall being taken with him when we first met, but when we were doing this big JCPenney CBS special, I drove to his house in Malibu and understood his level of success and charisma. I remember being really smitten with him, but I was so young at the time. I also had a boyfriend who I ended up marrying. I never thought being with David was a possibility. We were always professional, even though he let me know he had a crush on me.

Binge-watching? We’re big fans of Jeff Bridges and The Old Man on Hulu. My manager also represents Jeff Bridges.

Social skills? I love to be social, but I’m not very good at networking. David is so good at working a room. It’s an authentic gift. He’s interested in people who have nothing to do with what he does. I find myself around a lot of fascinating people—no credit to me. I reap the benefits of having dinner with some amazing people.

Charity work? David has the David Foster Foundation. They help families in need of lifesaving transplants. I’ve been helping with videos to keep people engaged. We are always doing performances for charity events. I also support the McPhee Outreach in Africa, where my ex-husband and I built quite a few schools. I also like to donate here and there to local charities.

Your passions? Jewelry! Pokemon was big when I was a little girl, but my girlfriend—still one of my best friends—and I would bring in our silver rings and trade them on the desks. On Friday nights, my mother and I would watch the jewelry channels. My other passion is tennis, which I play every day for a few hours. I love it. It’s an incredible workout, and it’s social.

KMF start? One day, our really good friend Greg Renker of Guthy-Renker connected me with Ray Manzella, who wanted to do a jewelry line with me. When I got that email, I thought that is so serendipitous because I hadn’t told anyone I wanted one. I give Ray so much credit for helping start the KMF jewelry collection.

Jewelry launch? When Ray told me about a KMF pop-up on Rodeo Drive, I said that’s a nobrainer. I said, guys, we are doing this. We will never have this opportunity to showcase our brand on Rodeo Drive. All my friends and influencers will be there, so I’m excited. David and I will perform a 30-minute set from our new Christmas album.

Next album? David and I are putting out half of our new Christmas album this year and completing it next year.

Career moves? I’d love to do another Broadway show. [Katharine starred in Waitress the Musical.] David and I are touring, so I have the luxury of being patient for something really great. Having a baby during he pandemic, I’ve been able to slide into the background and haven’t missed out on anything.

Fantasy dinner? Hands down, one guest would be Dave Chapelle—he’s a genius. Beethoven. My husband, David, is the best dinner date. Barbra Streisand, who I have had dinner with before. She’s a legend. One more. My mom, who’s so sweet. She would appreciate being in the room with Beethoven, Barbara, and Dave Chapelle.

What’s next? I recently put myself on tape for a new streaming show. The jewelry collection is my creative outlet now, and it’s great because I can work on it from home.

Mommy mode? I love being a mom. Having a baby changed my motivation. The idea of reading a script or putting myself on tape a year ago? I didn’t have any desire.

Baby’s future? My husband hopes Rennie grows up to be a tennis player. I was fond of that idea because it would be exciting to travel the world and follow him around, but he’s always drumming, so I think he’s going to be a musician, and I’ll still be chasing him. G

It has been hectic in London with Frieze and so many parties and exhibitions for the past month. Some of the highlights were a brilliant showing of Paul Allen’s collection of paintings at Christie’s and the Freud exhibition.

Last week, I wore my new long coat by Moschino with taps as buttons (which suits my character—hot and cold) to a de Vere Society seminar to argue that Shakespeare was Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford. He could have had a baby with our (supposed virgin) Queen Elizabeth I, named Henry Wriothesley, 1st Earl of Southampton. If this is all true, they are related to Prince William (you can clearly see I have been down a rabbit hole).

I have also been making documentaries with director Hector Abaaunza. We recently interviewed Dame Julia Peyton-Jones, who ran the Serpentine Gallery and now runs the Thaddeus Ropac Gallery; and Lady Colin Campbell, the expert on Megan and Harry. I chose to wear my long, militaresque Gucci coat.

With mixed feelings on climate change, I went to a Chatham House lecture by John Kerry. We should think of better ways to run the world, and it requires being affordable for all. We need to look after our garden.

Lady Victoria Hervey gave an incredible dinner at Tramps, where we all dressed up for the occasion—Stacey Engman wore her crown, and Victoria was given exotic black gloves from Phillip Plein.

I helped photographer Alison Jackson curate, A Day in Your Life, a photography competition at the Saatchi Gallery in aid of local Chelsea children. It was a huge success, and the children’s artwork was astonishing.

As I walk along the streets of London, I long to see properly dressed people again. I’m not fond of gym shoes, jeans, or puffer jackets—it would be so nice to see people dress up again.

Let’s Get Spicy!

The intoxicating aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves wa ing through the house signals the pumpkin pie will be ready shortly, and the holidays are in full swing.

These aromatic holiday cooking spices come from trees! As a gardener, I’m always looking for something new to grow. I’ve raised a ton of herbs but never spices and discovered that they come from different parts of the plant! An herb is the green leafy part of the plant, and spices come from the root, stem, seed, fruit, flower, or tree bark. At the grocery store, you can buy spices whole or powdered. For efficiency, I opt for the powdered variety, but now that I understand the difference—spices have a brand new meaning!

CINNAMON –THE BARK

Cinnamon has two main categories: cassia and ceylon. While both are harvested in sheets found beneath the bark of trees belonging to the same scientific family, they produce distinctly different products.

Cassia is the most common variety making up over 90% of the cinnamon imported to the US from Asia. Ceylon is produced in Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar, Brazil and the Caribbean and is rarely found in the US. Substituting Ceylon for traditional cinnamon in your holiday baking is a simple way to bring sweet flavors to the next level.

GROW CINNAMON

Once the cinnamon tree matures, it is cut off at the base to produce new shoots that grow from the trunk. Cinnamon comes from the shoots’ inner bark that’s peeled about the size of a finger. As the bark dries, it curls up tightly into a tubular form known as a quill, which we call cinnamon sticks. The Cassia sticks have a thick layer wrapped around itself with a dark reddish color differing from the Ceylon variety, which is tan in color with paper thin layers. Cinnamon sticks preserve the flavor and aroma. Try using a coffee grinder to grind it into a powder when needed.

HEALTH

Some say cinnamon helps lower blood sugar and cholesterol. Because of its antimicrobial

properties, people use it for topical remedies, from curing acne to fighting infection.

GROWING NUTMEG

NUTMEG –A SEED

Nutmeg trees are tropical evergreens native to Indonesia and can grow to a whopping 30-60 feet tall. The fruit is 2 inches long and covered by an outer husk. Once ripened, it splits apart, giving you two spices from a single fruit. Nutmeg is the kernel of the seed, and the outer red-to-orange lacey covering is a spice called mace. Nutmeg is slightly sweeter, and mace has a more delicate flavor and is used for its saffron-like hue in dishes. Nutmeg is commonly used in the ground-up form to save time in the kitchen, but this reduces the potency of the natural flavor. Grind your own when you need it to ensure the desired spicy-sweetness for your recipe.

Nutmeg trees desire a sunny location protected from gusty winds. This tropical tree needs well-draining soil, but it also likes it humid and damp, so keep it moist, not letting the soil dry out. Expect the tree to bear fruit between 5-8 years of age for around 30-70 years. The seeds are dried gradually in the sun for 6 to 8 weeks. The nutmeg shrinks away from its seed coat and rattles when shaken in its shell—removing the shell exposes the nutmeg.

HEALTH

Some believe that nutmeg helps blood circulation and aids in digestion. It is also a source of thiamin, magnesium, and vitamin B6.

CLOVE – A FLOWER

Whole cloves are dried flower buds from the Syzygium Aromatica evergreen tree. The clove tree grows 26’ to 39’ tall with large leaves and bright red flowers when ready to harvest. Cloves are commercially harvested in Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Madagascar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania.

GROWING CLOVES

The spice clove is the immature, unpollinated flower bud of the clove tree and cannot be used to grow a clove seedling. Finding a clove tree to buy can be difficult and expensive, but you can purchase clove seeds that will germinate and grow through the internet. It will take five to seven years to bear spice-worthy flowers. Clove trees like to grow in moist soil. Find a sunny location, and don’t let the ground become too wet to avoid root rot.

HEALTH

Cloves help improve blood circulation, clear respiratory passages, and aid digestion. They protect the liver, boost the immune system, and are said to help control diabetes-related blood sugar levels. Cloves help fight oral diseases like gum inflammation, relieve headaches, and display aphrodisiac properties.

Spice trees take time before they bear seed, flower, or bark. Understanding what it takes to grow spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves, I now have a deeper appreciation for the unique flavor they bring to many dishes that I have held so dear to my heart.

Pumpkin Pie Spice Blend

Your pumpkin pie spice blend is the heart and soul of your pie. Creating the right mix of warm baking spices is the secret to perfecting your pumpkin pie and other Holiday treats. Here’s how:

Total time: 5 mins

Makes 1/2 cup Ingredients

1/4 cup ground cinnamon

1 1/2 tablespoons ground nutmeg

1 1/2 tablespoons ground ginger

2 teaspoons ground allspice

2 teaspoons ground cloves

Pour spices in a bowl. Mix the cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves until well combined. Transfer to an airtight container using a funnel.
