supernatural-A™ | restorative retinoid creme Supernatural-A™ is a luxurious, emollient-rich, anti-aging crème formulated with potent anti-aging ingredients that offer significant improvements in the visible signs of aging and skin smoothness. The most important ingredient being patent pending IconicA®. IconicA® is a stabilized, naturally encapsulated Retinaldehyde, form of Vitamin A. It works by helping to speed up the cell-turnover rate, which can help to visibly revitalize skin, as well as improve the appearance of facial lines and skin-discoloration. ChroNOline™ an anti-aging peptide also helps to soften the appearance of surface lines, enhancing the skin’s youthful look and improving the softness of the skin. Adaptonyl®, an MMPi, was included to revitalize stressed skin by helping to support the natural defense barrier function of the skin. All of these multiple innovative technologies merge in this one age-defying complex, resulting in more youthful looking skin that appears more radiant and contoured. This is a game-changer!

What’s your passion? Evolution in every sense of the word. Creative expression. Therapeutic activities. Travel and exploration. What’s your guilty pleasure? Extremely unhealthy foods! Vegging out on video games and anime.

What are the three greatest blessings in your life? My greatest love, my daughter. The gifts God granted me: My starving curiosity, belly full of fire and default optimistic state of being. Let’s pretend that was three.

How do you describe yourself in five words? Silly, severe, sincere, soulful, sensitive.
GENL
Yes, folks, there will be another Pitch Perfect, coming to theatres this December. Actress Alexis Knapp is the model-looking star of the ensemble cast—soaring a full head above the others. Here, she pitches in on our Genlux Two-Word interview. Who are your heroes? Alan Watts. Gabor Maté. Richard Feynman. George Carlin. Patrick Stewart. Elon Musk. What’s something about yourself that you’d like to change? All limiting self-belief!
What’s your most embarrassing moment? Dropping three pounds of food in front of the entire school during a basketball game. Horrifying, they all laughed at me, which I was used to—but hurt none the less! I was easily embarrassed during grade school years.
What was the happiest moment of your life? Holding my daughter those first few hours. Indescribable.
What’s your favorite charity? Too many to choose! Penny for NASA. Any and all that devote all proceeds and energy to animals and our ecosystems.
What’s your everyday fashion style? Depends on the day entirely, but I enjoy comfort over anything. Add a little cozy to your swag! Happiness.
Where do you hope to be in five years? The top of Mount Everest, writing movies up there.
What’s your favorite getaway? South America, Europe. Give me ruins, give me islands, give me mountains. Presto!
What do you hope to come back as? Next lifetime? A mermaid should suffice, but would settle for an Eagle!
Your favorite quote? When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace. —Jimmy Hendrix What is your biggest regret? Not putting the cigarettes down the moment I picked them up.... What would your friends say is your best character trait? My lack of filter, or maybe my bleeding heart. HEART OFGOLD
At 25, Melissa Bolona was recognized by the New York Observer as one of the Top 20 Philanthropists Under 40. Now 27, when it comes to giving back, there’re no signs she’s slowing down. A X T KE

Bullying episodes? Kids teased me in school because of my last name. I happen to like Bologna (the lunch meat), so it didn’t bother me. When they noticed I didn’t care, it got dropped early on. When I was a Freshman in High School, some girls bullied my best friend and me. They were so nasty to us. You can only take it for so long, so I finally stood up for myself. And that was the day that bullying stopped. Later on, I ended up making friends with one of the bullies. Fashion style? It can go one of two ways: Workout clothes; or I’m in a white or black denim skirt with boots or sneakers and a cool T-shirt. That’s my everyday cliché look. For sneakers, I have a sparkly pair of Golden Goose. I have a few pair of Saint Laurent boots. Latest dream? I just moved, and I’m doing minor construction. I dreamed I had this crazy leak, and it was filling up my house. I Googled it to see what it meant, but I can’t remember now. Skincare regimen? I cannot go to bed or wakeup without cleaning my face—something my mom ingrained in me. I use Natura Bissé moisturizer and eye cream. I use some glycolic products.

Your passion? It sounds corny, but it’s my three dogs. They literally own me. The tiny one is Poppy, a Maltese Yorkshire Terrier, which I call a Morkie. There’s Paco; he’s also a Morkie. And then I have Petal; he’s a longhair Chihuahua.

U Connecticut-born model and actress Melissa Bolona was nine when her family moved to Lima, Peru. They moved back to the United States and settled in New Jersey when she was 12. Melissa graduated from Pace University in Manhattan, majoring in International Marketing. This year she has many projects slated for release including Malicious, directed by Michael Winnick, and her first female lead role in Acts of Violence, starring Bruce Willis. In 2015, The New York Observer recognized Melissa, then 25, as one of the Top 20 Philanthropists Under 40, for her work on behalf of the James Blake Foundation, the J/P Haitian Relief Organization, and for helping to raise $200,000 for a charity poker tournament sponsored by the Clinton Foundation. Here, Melissa answers our GENLUX Two-Word Interview.
Your superpower? I can eat so much food and stay under 200 pounds—that’s my superpower.
Embarrassing moment? It’s funny you ask that, but I really don’t get embarrassed like normal people. Well, sometimes, if my dog is acting overly friendly and stuff gets crazy, I might get a little embarrassed. Character change? Sometimes I get too deep, and I’m too sensitive. I care a lot about people —maybe too much. I also think everyone should think about changing something about themselves, though, I guess that would make them into another person. See, I’m getting too deep. Your hero? My sister Michele is one of my heroes. She has a strong work ethic. I like ambitious women, like Jessica Alba. She’s superwoman. Her Honest Company, her acting career. I think it’s cool that she can juggle all of these things. Breakfast today? Oh, man, sore subject. I had an early morning hike, and so I skipped breakfast. I get my Starbucks every single morning. A triple iced soy latte. For food, sometimes I’ll have oatmeal, an apple with peanut butter, or go to Le Pain Quotidien for one of their breakfast bowls. Fantasy dinner? Off the top of my head, I’d say dinner with Chris Martin from Coldplay. I’m obsessed with Coldplay, and he’s funny. Island must-haves? I would say my cell phone, but there’s no electricity to charge it, so forget that. Okay, I would bring a board game, because I’m really into games; like a backgammon board—but that’s on the basis that there’s someone else there to play. A huge water supply, and tools for cooking. You need tools to survive, right? Favorite charities? Working with the ASPCA. I also hope to start my foundation soon named after my dog who passed away not long ago. Three blessings? My sister, my dogs, and my health. Hmm, sounds like a Hallmark card.

GOING SOLO
Meet Ksenia Solo. The doe-eyed actress who stars brilliantly in the newly released film, In Search of Fellini, and who, in real life, is an advocate for anti-bullying—a painful hardship she suffered through most of her youth. GENL

RVIE
Career inspiration? I come from a very artistic family. Actors, ballerinas, and art directors. My grandmother is still teaching acting. So I grew up in the theater watching my family on stage. Fashion style? Simple and classic. I’m a big fan of Rag & Bone and Citizens of Humanity jeans. My favorite go-to items are leather sneakers by Ernesto Dolani and a jacket from Manchester England. Your breakfast? Oatmeal with bananas and some Canadian maple syrup. A shot of espresso with a little bit of butter. Bullying encounters? From when I was 5 to 16, I was bullied in school, and most days, I would come home crying. I was bullied for being super tiny, and for my curly hair. I was bullied for being born in a different place and because I spoke another language. I was very shy and had a hard time fitting in. I remember one school I didn’t want to go because of the bullying, so my mom would go with me after hours and have the janitor open the door so I could go to my desk to get my things. I was teased for acting. I remember I booked this commercial where they died my hair, and I was excited about it and went to school and was teased for that. School was a battlefield; while at work I was surrounded by like-minded creative people. Your passion? My work. Filmmaking in general. It’s an incredible honor to tell people’s story. I take acting seriously and make conscious decisions on my work involvement. Plan B? I want to be a director or a photographer. I love photography. I directed Craig Strickland’s music video for I Hope We Don’t Breakup. Best traits? I hope my friends would say that I’m a good friend; thoughtful and caring. That’d be nice to hear. Any pets? I have a toy poodle, named Valentino

Ksenia Solo’s first gig came at 10, when she played an alien princess on the Canadian TV show, I Was a Sixth Grade Alien. Since then she’s scored some choice roles including her five-year stint on TV’s Lost Girl, and as Veronica in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan. In her latest film, In Search of Fellini, Ksenia is both convincing and heart-stealing in the lead role as a coquettish American girl, who travels to Italy in hopes of meeting the iconic director. Though in real life Ksenia is 30, she nails the part of Lucy, the sheltered, barely-out-ofher-teens youth. Recently, Ksenia answered our GENLUX Two-Word Interview.
Recurring dream? I’ve had a few over the years. On the not-so-great nights, someone is trying to kill me like in an action movie. Maybe I’m watching too many murder mystery movies. I tend not to remember the good dreams. Role models? The women in my family. I’ve always wanted to be like them. Strong, selfless, independent women who take care of those around them.
Best gift? On one birthday, I had a lovely experience. I was on vacation with my aunt and my mom in Mexico. They woke me up at the crack of dawn, like 4 am—which made me so mad— but they surprised me with this sunrise boat ride on the ocean. It was so magical and beautiful. They told me it was important to wake up to at least one sunrise a year. We had breakfast on the boat. Of course, food makes everything that much better. Best advice? Recently, for a birthday my family got me this beautiful ring, and I have to tell you, it’s a ring that your wonderful stylist, Lisa Cera, put on me during our GENLUX shoot. I fell in love with it. I’d never seen a ring like this before. Somehow through the magic of the people around me, this ring was found and given to me on my birthday, so thank you for that. It was engraved with these powerful words, it says, ‘YOUR MIND IS EVERYTHING, WHAT YOU THINK YOU BECOME.’ Powerful words that I live my life by. Three blessings: My family, and the line of work that I’m in. It challenges me as an artistic being. And a blessing is the travels that my work takes me on, where I get to experience different people and cultures. What other job would take me this far or let me experience all of these different things? Favorite charity? In 2010, 11-year-old Ty Smalley took his own life to escape bullying. I’m on the board of directors for the charity that Ty’s parents are a part of, Stand for the Silent (standforthesilent.org), and use my voice in any way I can. We raise funds to get to more schools. The primary focus is to spread the word that lets kids know they are not alone. It saves lives. It is an incredibly vital organization. Harvey moments? I’ve had instances when I was made to feel uncomfortable. I’ve received invitations to parties or hotel rooms, but I am one of the luckier ones—I’ve not been any situations that have gone to the next level. I feel like something is changing and it’s an incredibly powerful and uniting thing that’s happening right now. We are way overdue for this cultural change. Women are starting to have a louder voice. What’s next? I started a production company, and I’m excited about getting behind the camera. Next life? I hope to come back as a really powerful badass bird like an eagle.

46 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2017
I
got the chance to sit down with Rochelle Gores Fredston at her family’s chic Gores Group offices in Beverly Hills. Youthful and stylish in a Proenza Schouler flo‑ ral skirt and black turtleneck, by mere appearances, you might not guess that she’s busy running one of LA’s premier philanthropic foundations, or operating an entire campus for tutoring underprivileged youth, or doing all the many things necessary to keep up with her two young daughters and husband. As she sat there, the picture of calm, it was clear she had everything under control and I was taken by her poise and fierce know‑how. Rochelle grew up in a family of entrepreneurs. Her father, Alec Gores, made his fortune as an investor in the tech‑ nology sector. “My education in business came from just jumping in,” Rochelle recalls, “I was always reminded of how fortunate we were, and I think that’s why I was drawn to philanthropy.” It’s a lesson she passes on to her children, who are involved in the many projects Rochelle spearheads. I asked how she talks with her young daughters about issues relating to homelessness and poverty. “They are very much aware and want to get involved,” she says, “One day my daughter saw a group of homeless people and asked if we could deliver groceries to them. We then turned it into a project and she had to figure out what to give and how much it would cost, it became a much more immersive and meaningful experience.” Before she became a prominent figure in the philanthropy world, Rochelle got her start in fashion. She was a buyer for the trendy New York label Scoop, before opening Arcade, her own boutique, in West Hollywood. It specialized in uniquely European brands and design, which made her a fixture in the Los Angeles fashion scene. But soon she real‑ ized that she could make a greater impact by combining her love of fashion and outreach. “Fashion and philanthropy go hand‑in‑hand,” she says, “I’ve received tremendous support from the fashion community over the years, who are incred‑ ibly passionate about helping at‑risk youth in Los Angeles County.” Each year she hosts an elaborate designer gala, partnering with icons like Carolina Herrera, J. Mendel, and Monique Lhuillier to raise funds for her cause.
Today Rochelle’s focus is squarely on education, fueled by the belief that given the opportunity, our disadvantaged youth can exceed expectations and circumstance. She believes the first step to fracture the generational poverty cycle begins with education. “If you trace back to the origins of poverty in a family, you’ll find that it starts with a lack of sustainable education, whether it’s schooling or trade. Education is truly the only way to disrupt the cycle.” In 2010 Rochelle founded the Philanthropic Society Los Angeles or PSLA, an organization that funds programs to help disrupt poverty through educational initiatives. To date, PSLA has raised over $15 million in seven years. She was then inspired to create a true environment of learning for youth who are homeless or living well below the pov‑ erty line and established Learning Labs Ventures (learn‑ inglabventures.org). Today Learning Lab Ventures hosts around 250 students on a beautiful, fully‐equipped campus in Highland Park, Los Angeles. This K‐12 grade program offers free after‐school tutoring to their students. So far they operate with a 100% graduation rate, with some of their students moving on to prestigious schools like USC, UCLA, and MIT. “We try to provide everything they need to be successful while on our campus, whether that’s school supplies, mentorship, even just having a hot meal can make a big difference.” Rochelle says, “And we set the bar really high; each student knows how valuable their spot at Learning Lab Ventures is.” The program has been met with growing success thanks to her fundraising efforts, which Rochelle attributes to reach‑ ing people in a less conventional, more authentic way. She believes the key to getting more people excited about giving back is to offer varying options for involvement and engage‑ ment. “We want to give people the ability to get hands‑on, visit our classrooms, meet our kids, or if simply purchasing school supplies for a student via AmazonWishlist is easier, we can facilitate that too. No effort is too small.” G

54 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2017
Katie Cleary slips into the round booth at Bedford & Burns in Beverly Hills and orders The Hippie Sandwich, an avocado and spinach sandwich with sprouts and tomatoes. She’s feeling overjoyed. This morning, her animal rescue, Peace for Animals, rescued Red, a steer headed for slaughter. They convinced the owner to let them save the animal, and found a safe sanctuary for him to live out his life. It was a good morning. Katie is, to her core, an animal lover and one of their biggest advocates. Besides her foundation, in 2012, she founded World Animal News. Daily reports of animal victories, like Italy’s ban of animals from circuses; and fails, like the recent poaching of a rhino in a French zoo for its horn, make the website headlines. Katie, who, besides being an animal activist, counts herself a filmmaker, producer, model, host, and philanthropist, recently produced a film, Give Me Shelter, that originally aired on Netflix (now available on Amazon and iTunes). A follow-up documentary is in the works; We Are One, that also tackles animal and environmental issues like climate change. “We’re not the only species living on this planet,” Katie says, “There are 8.7 million species that share this planet with us. We are responsible for those. Climate change is undeniable. We are destroying the planet. I’m concerned for my unborn children and their future and the future of our planet.” Not one to let fear dictate her life, her biggest fear would be, “To live on this planet without these species, because I know I’m here to protect them. It’s my job. If I don’t succeed, I’d be devastated. I would sacrifice my life for one of these species.”
Ronny Kobo dress, ronnykobo.com AMI Clubwear shoe, necklace, amiclubwear.com
If Katie sounds like another hero of animal concerns, Jane Goodall, that rings like music to her ears. “Jane’s always been my idol and she was in my documentary. She has a very subdued, humble, quiet, and angelic quality to her energy. She’s now in her 80s and proven herself. If she wants to pass the torch, I’m ready.”

Thank goodness for the iPhone camera! It lets us keep track of all the beautiful things we’re doing. Right now, I’m taking photos from the top of the beautiful new, and very luxurious Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills. From here, Los Angeles is looking clearer these days. I can see mountain ranges far in the distance. Unfortunately, right now I am between houses as some lovely person ran off with my deposit on my new house. I know, I know. I most certainly have seen Beverly Hills in a more interesting way. But I have faith that there is always the bright side of calamity. BALLY FW15/16

80 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2017
Of course, everything is relative, and there have been negative forces playing nasty tricks all over the world. Even here in California, the fires in the Napa Valley has caused untold damages. Luckly, some of our favorite resorts, Calistoga Ranch, Solage and Auberge du Soleil, are fine and ready for us all to come and visit As I go through my photos, I’m remembering a witty Johnny Smith painting that was hanging at Eric Buterbaugh’s party that Eric had at his fragrance salon. Here’s another shot of a pair of Perrin gloves I lusted after when I was at their boutique on Beverly Drive. In London, where I live most days, it too, is all about art and Gucci is making us all think more creatively. In this photo, at the height of Frieze, I was tasting the delicious mint chocolate cake designed for Marina Abramovic. And here’s a photo from another night where I’m singing along to Belinda Carlisle’s new Kundalini Music with Normandy Keith. Kundalini Yoga is all the rage, and everybody looks so serene in their turban a perfect way to live in this world that is a spinning wheel, as I say thank goodness for photographs.

SERIOUSLY, I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT... BY LAURA DUNN FASHION DIRECTOR While dining in Malibu one afternoon...I spied a woman wearing a gorgeous leather, gem-encrusted bracelet. To say I was obsessed is an understatement! She told me the designer was Cesar Uribe of Ceeslove, who I contacted to find out what other beautiful creations he had. When I found out that he also had chokers, I ordered two on the spot, sight unseen. Cesar’s work is unique and inspired by the designs of the Sami people from Sweden. His timeless yet edgy chokers and bracelets are the perfect gift for this Holiday season. These beautiful creations become even more gorgeous with time as the leather patinas and contrasts against the precious and semiprecious gems. CLEAR THE AIR
Clean air, like clean water, is better for our systems. Case in point: Our son was having trouble sleeping at night. We ran the Molekule in his room for a week straight and he started sleeping better. With no other change to the environment, we feel it’s from the purified air. Did you know that indoor air pollution can be 5X worse than outdoor air. Molekule uses Photo Electrochemical Oxidation (PECO) nanotechnology, developed over the past 20 years, to combat allergens, mold, bacteria, and airborne chemicals on a molecular level. Most notably, PECO is not just capturing, but actually destroying these pollutants, including those up to 1000x smaller than what HEPA filters can capture. Molekule catches even volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are carcinogenic microscopic pollutants that concentrate in indoor air and negatively affect our health. $799 or for $71/month through Affirm. Buy now, and your first year of filters ($99 value) is free, molekule.com

Golden Rules for Beautiful Skin Hello. My name is Nina. I’m a former European model. Working with Ford and Elite demanded perfect skin, yet puberty gifted me with a problematic complexion. This led me on a quest for better skin, which grew into a passion. I earned a Masters degree in aesthetics and began helping people achieve beautiful, youthful skin. 1. Cleanse. Every Morning. While we sleep, new skins cells form and old ones fall off and stick to our face. The best way to get rid of old cells is by cleansing with a milky or foam cleanser. Don’t rely on just water. Would you rely on only water to clean your dishes—yuck! Nina B recommends: Caudalie Instant Foaming Cleanser, $28, Nordstrom
2. Cleanse. Every Evening. Throughout the day, our skin protects our bodies from pollutants, toxins, and sweat. Skin produces sebum, an oil that acts as a protective layer. Then there’s makeup we put on. All in all, an unpleasant mixture we need to wash away. We don’t want to rub these impurities into our pillow at night, and, from the pillow, spread them further across our face. Even at 3. Wash skin Pillowcases night, cells fall off, Often and bacteria
grows. Don’t allow them to accumulate. Keep your pillowcases clean, and your skin will thank you with a rosy glow!
4. Apply Moisturizer. Every Morning and Evening. Using moisturizers consistently is a law of beauty! Moisturizers hydrate and help skin cells function optimally. Nina B recommends: Dr Dennis Gross Ferulic + Retinol Anti-Aging Moisturizer $72, net-a-porter.com
5. Apply Sunscreen. Daily. Nothing ages you faster than the sun. There are two types of sunscreens: physical and chemical. Physical sunscreens are non-irritating and non-allergenic. Chemical sunscreens, when combined with chlorine from pools and sunshine, can turn into carcinogens! For physical sunscreens, look for two ingredients: Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. And if you think you’re young and can get away with a sunburn or two… you can’t. Your skin remembers…everything. You’ve been warned. Nina B recommends: SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50, skinceuticals.com
6. Use Toners. Twice Daily. This is a step many of us skip—but we shouldn’t! Toners restore our skin’s natural, slightly acidic pH. Birth control, hormone replacement therapy, antibiotics, even the environment, alter our pH. Toners help get our pH back to proper balance. Nina B recommends: Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence $89, Saks Fifth Avenue, Beverly Hills, 310-275-4211 7. Use an Antioxidant Serum Serums are highly concentrated products in small molecular sizes that penetrate deep into our skin. The best serums deliver antioxidants, thus slow aging. Antioxidants also correct uneven skin tone, expression lines, and improve firmness and elasticity. It’s the closest we have to the fountain of youth for our skin—so I’m betting none of us wants to pass that up! Nina B recommends: iS Clinical Genexc Serum $170, dermstore.com

9. Use a Mask at Home. Once or Twice a Week. Masks work more intensely than facial creams. Mask can be chosen to feed essential skin nutrients, or exfoliate, or clarify and unblock pores. Masks can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and increase the brightness of the skin. If your skin is tired or dry, try using masks daily until a visible improvement is seen. Masks are also great to power through before holidays to get that extra glow or after returning from vacation when skin needs help recuperating. Nina B recommends: Caudalie Moisturizing Mask $39, Nordstrom
8. Exfoliate. Once or Twice a Week. Aging slows our natural cycle of replacing old skin cells with new. Exfoliation removes the old, discolored cells and speeds up the cycle toward where it was in our youth. Nina B recom10. mends: Olga Lorencin Red Get Monthly Facials Carpet Facial in a Box $105, I’m sure you know that facials fix big olgalorencinskincare.com problems your home routines cannot. But did you know that post-facial skin soaks all the potent ingredients of home toners, serums and creams! That’s the best thing about facials… they make your home care rock!
Abiding by 10 out of 10 rules can be tough. I know. But follow as many as you can. If you are consistent with all ten, friends will wonder if you ran off secretly to some exclusive Swiss chalet and turned back the clock on your skin. Only you and I will know better. ;) So see you next issue… your aesthetician, Nina B. @ninabskin

40 years ago, Daniel Naysan’s father immigrated to the United States from Iran. Without speaking English, and with a dictionary by his side, he went on to study and pass the dental boards. Now, Daniel has proudly followed in his dad’s footsteps, and together they now have a thriving practice in Beverly Hills.
Three blessings? My family, my growing practice, and my exposure to some of the greatest and most interesting people in the world!
Favorite quote? “Everything negative: pressure, challenges, is all an opportunity for me to rise.” Kobe Bryant
Your passion? I’m blessed with a beautiful daughter and loving wife, and I can’t imagine my life without them. I also work side-by-side with my father and mentor who started our dental practice 40 years ago. He taught me the value of being an honest and dedicated husband, father, and dentist, which has, in turn, made me truly love what I do. I can help change someone’s self-confidence and appearance through my various innovative cosmetic dentistry approaches. Seeing the beautiful smiles on my patients keeps me passionate and excited.
Your heroes? As cliché as this may sound, my father truly is my hero. As an immigrant from Iran, he moved to America with a very limited understanding of the English language and culture. He rose time and time again without letting challenges and language barriers hold him back. My mother tells the story of how my father studied for the dental boards with a dictionary by his side so that he could understand what he was learning.

Favorite getaway? Anywhere in Italy. I love the
Biggest regret? I was accepted to Columbia University for both undergraduate and graduate school. Had I known I would attend USC for my dental training, I certainly would have loved to have moved to New York for a few years and be immersed in a new lifestyle and culture. Best trait? My loyalty. Favorite charity? City of Hope and Children’s Hospital LA. 5-year plan? Exactly where I am now, just with more children, a larger home, and larger practice with many more happy patients! Photograph by Jennifer Manley
Fashion style? I wear customdesigned scrubs on full-mouth reconstruction work days, on days when I do consultations or have meetings, I prefer a crisp white men’s shirt, extra starch on the collar, paired with slim fit trousers and a printed blazer.

Your diet? I had a horrendous diet in college. At 22, I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. The doctor told me I was at three times greater risk of getting cancer, so I became a vegetarian for 25 years before going vegan seven years ago.
Favorite charity? Mercy for Animals. I’m donating 10 percent of my book sales to it.
Fashion style? I like to be comfortable. I keep it simple and wear jeans, and I love Stella McCartney.
Best trait? I hope that my friends would say that I’m kind. I try to make people feel comfortable.

With movies like What the Health convincing us to at least consider a vegan lifestyle, authors like Sandra Sellani, and her twin sister, Susan, are helping us make the transition. Their new book, The 40-Year Old Vegan, shows us how to steer clear of cheeseburgers, ribs and Chicken McNuggets. Here, younger sis, Sandra (by two minutes), answers the Genlux two-word questionnaire.

Major accomplishment? At 50, I decided to enter a 5K and ultimately worked up to a marathon. Seven years ago I ran the NYC marathon. I’m healthier now, at 57, than I was at 27. Healthy reading? How Not to Die—the most compelling book on why we should eat vegetarian; and mine, The 40-Year-Old Vegan: 75 Recipes to Make You Leaner, Cleaner, and Greener in the Second Half of Life. We called it that because when people reach age 40, maybe they’re getting a bit of a tummy and have more medicines in the cabinet.
Sandra Sellani (left), and twin sister, Susan, photographed by Chuck Gloman
Your DNA? According to Ancestry.com, I’m full Italian: One-half Northern Italian and one-half Southern Italian. Your background? I grew up in Pennsylvania. I started playing piano at the age of six and practiced five hours a day. I graduated from Misericordia University with a degree in music, and have my MBA from Pepperdine. I also graduated from Matthew Kenney Culinary Academy in Los Angeles.
Your career? Author, marketing and branding consultant. First gig? My first job was working in a convalescent hospital. My major was music therapy, so I used it to help patients. Soon after I started, the marketing director left, and I ended up taking her position and stayed there six years.

Three blessings? 1. My twin sister—a blessing to go through life with a friend who has understood me. 2. My kindest most giving friends. 3. To see the Pacific Ocean every day.
Bullying memories? They made fun of me for being tall. When I was in 6th grade, I was already taller than my teacher.
Professional goal? I’d like this book to reach as many people as possible, and because of it, help them change their lives through vegan living. I know it can help prevent and cure diseases. In addition to the many health benefits, we would have less factory farming, less pollution, less land depletion, less ozone layer damage, and on and on. I’d like to contribute to that in any way I can.
Your platform? I’m a weekly guest on Jane Velez-Mitchell’s show, Lunch Break Live. I share how easy it is to eat this way, and how vibrant you can be for your entire life.
Vegan challenges? You’re not just giving up food; you’re giving up memories and associations. But the good news is you’re not just eliminating the food you love; you’re able to have some good-tasting vegan substitutes.
Favorite burger? My favorite vegan burger is from Kerry Song’s company, The Abbot’s Butcher. You’ll be hearing about her.
Your superpower? My intuition, though sometimes I follow it blindly.
Your mission? My mission is to save animals from people, and people from animals.

GETAWAY CALISTOGA
GENLUX
Super Suite
The spectacular Calistoga Ranch ‘Creek Lodges’ have two separate buildings: one with bedroom and bathroom; the other with living room and bathroom. Together, they corner a private deck with hot tub, fireplace, and outdoor living room.
Luxury Hideaway
The recent Napa Valley fires left untold damage, but fortunately, one of our favorite destinations, the Calistoga Ranch resort, was untouched. The air is clear again, and the doors are open for your next visit. California is ripe with wine country getaways. From north to south, we have three regions worth exploring: Napa, Santa Ynez, and Temecula. To the first, one of our all-time favorite Northern Cal getaways is the Calistoga Ranch resort. It survived the recent fires and is welcoming guests with open arms.
Great Outdoors Rain or shine; night or day, an outdoor shower is one of life’s pure delights.
MUST WINE:
MUST STAY:
Get in touch with nature. The Calistoga Ranch’s onebedroom ‘Creek Lodges’ blend seamlessly into the woodsy surroundings and offer peaceful seclusion in 1,200-square-feet of indoor-outdoor living space. Relax while reading John Grisham’s The Rooster Bar out on your private deck. On colder days, cozy up to the outdoor fireplace. Gaze at the stars while soaking in your private hot tub or enjoy an outdoor shower under the trees. When it’s bedtime, slip under the cushy bedding—it’s like sleeping on a cloud. Tomorrow, swim a few laps in the pool before having a spa treatment at the Auberge Spa at Calistoga Ranch and exploring the local village. (calistogaranch.com)
Napa Valley has more than 300 wineries—way too many to explore on one visit. Calistoga Ranch provides a convenient map on their website to chart your tasting plan.

California Craftsman
In breathtaking detail, Bill Evans paints an authentic homage to the late 19th-century, craftsman-style of architecture. From top to bottom, his Lodge at Torrey Pines is a masterpiece that reflects this cherished style.
MUST STAY:
Geez, it’s already been more than 15 years since I last reviewed the Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla. It still stands, precisely as I’d remembered it. A stunning example of the early 1900s’ craftsman-style— dripping with details found in the original Greene & Greene residences. Here, you’ll find wonderfully-executed leaded-glass windows similar to those found on the famed William R. Thorsen House. The lamps, the moldings, the wood—everything about this resort is put together like a cherried-out vintage automobile.
MUST GOLF:
MUST DINE:
Taking its name from the early 20th-century California artist, A.R. Valentien, the Lodge’s signature fine-dining restaurant is led by Executive Chef Jeff Jackson who knows how to orchestrate a culinary symphony. Try the 28-Day Dry Aged Prime Rib Eye Steak with charred Sierra Gold Potatoes, Red Onion, Spigarello, Fava Beans, Meyer Lemon Vinaigrette. More recently, I’ve opted a pescatarian lifestyle, so this was a stupendous swan song.
Save for one errant golf shot that landed—somewhat softly—on our suite’s front porch (thank you, large pine tree), we savored our 18thgreen views of the 7,258-yard, Torrey Pines golf course. There are two championship courses to challenge your game, and guests enjoy priority tee times.
MUST SPA:
Leave your cell phones in your suite and make it over to the Spa Torrey Pines for a relaxing Couples Massage. A duo of expert therapists performs a pair of melting massages in the same candlelit room.

JETAWAY
Velvet Rope Access Access Italy gives visitors a VIP glimpse of Italy—including hallowed ground of the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica
When in Italy
Samia’s semi-annual European jetaway takes her to Italy. This time, thanks to Access Italy, she gets the royal treatment Usually, I love the trip planning process. Researching all the essential options, but adding the more esoteric variety, is fun. Booking restaurants puts notions of the regional cuisine in my psyche, and invariably there are fabulous spa treatments or sightseeing excursions worth further investigation. But once in a while, I like to kick back and let someone else do the digital leg work. That’s when I call Angelo Amorico! About 30 years ago, this charismatic man—full of energy and joke-telling prowess—founded Access Italy to provide exclusive private tours of Italy, France, Greece, and Spain. Since then, his clients have included the then-sitting President Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Ben Stiller, Penelope Cruz, Michael J. Fox, and a range of top executives. Angelo and his sons Simone and Marco form the family business, and their service extends from private tours of the Vatican (when no other guests are present) to truffle hunting in Umbria, to yacht charters to nearby islands. For the Obama family vacation, Angelo planned a gelato-making class. Che cosa?! Gracie mille to Angelo and his fabulous team. accessitaly.net
98 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2017
MUST STAY:
Mama mia, the Four Seasons Hotel Firenze is lush with history! The 116-room property includes both the 15th-century Palazzo della Gherardesca and the 16th-century former convent, known as La Villa, which frames the city’s largest private garden. La Villa, the hotel-within-the-hotel, is where you’d want to stay. The residential atmosphere makes one feel at home with a private entrance, and it’s only a 10-minute walk to the Duomo and other historical attractions. My suite was facing the beautiful tranquil garden. On my arrival, I wasn’t feeling well, so I took a bath, ordered room service and slept like a baby. fourseasons.com/florence
MUST VISIT:
Thanks to Angelo’s connections, I visited the Vatican, as few, outside of, well, maybe the Pope’s BFF, have. Angelo and Simone took us behind the scenes as they did for Oprah and other VIPs, where we got to enter hidden rooms filled with centuries-old priceless artifacts and vestments belonging to the Popes. We accessed St. Peter’s Basilica through a back door that was manned by the famous Swiss guards. We were in the presence of so many treasures (which I am not allowed to elaborate on) but believe me, it was breathtaking. We even accessed the Sistine Chapel through a secret door.
MUST SUNSET: Another remarkable hotel is the Palazzo Fendi. Take the elevator to Zuma restaurant on the rooftop and enjoy the magnificent views! Appreciate the lush beauty and the sunset while sipping on a glass of Champagne.
MUST YACHT:
One beautiful morning, Simone drove us to Terracina, where we boarded a private boat, and spent the day navigating the Mediterranean Sea. We paid a visit to the volcanic island Ponza, and it was one of the highlights of my trip. The unpolluted beaches and limpid sea water; the narrow streets, the colorful walls and various delightful flavors of reminded me of Greece. Being born in France and traveling so much to Italy, I couldn’t believe I had never been there before.
MUST DINE:
For a quintessential Roman experience, try the Hostaria Da Pietro, (reservation suggested). It’s so small and intimate; you can’t help but converse with people sitting nearby. We went three times—the food is that good! hostariadapietro.com For another excellent dining experience, head to Magnolia, a Michelin star restaurant found inside the Grand Hotel Via Veneto. Chef Franco Madama creates exquisite works of edible art. Highlight: Tasting rose petal risotto with capers, chili and negroni leaves. Delizioso!
MUST STAY:
When in Rome, the Grand Hotel Via Veneto is the place to stay. Not long ago, the property made Conde Nast Traveler’s “101 Most Beautiful Hotels In The World” list. More than 500 original paintings hang on its walls including Giovanni Battista Nolli’s original, “Map of Rome” (1748), which gives guests a warm, “Benvenuto a Roma!” ghvv.it
MUST SIP:
Another highlight was our private tour of the winery at Badia a Passignano—a breathtaking property nestled in the gorgeous Tuscan countryside. Our guide, Veronica, filled our souls with historical anecdotes and stories about the world of grapes, corks and exclusive labels. This was followed by an indulgent lunch at the Osteria di Passignano—complete with tasty Chiantis. Fino alla prossima volta! Badia a Passignano winery, Osteria di Passignano, antinori.it
MUST HUNT:
On our way to the capital city of Tuscany, Firenze, we made off to the Umbria countryside for an exclusive experience. With the help of truffle-hunting dogs, we learned to scout this rare, edible mushroom. Following the hunt, we broke for lunch with La Casa delle Cuoche’s talented chef, Laura Colaiacovo, who incorporated the truffles we’d just harvested. Genlux Out-of-Towner
There’s something about the power of a great accessory - it’s special, expressive, utilitarian, it can take an outfit to the next level. That’s the promise of luxury handbag designer Elena Ghisellini. The Genoa-born Ghisellini was first recognized for her unique and innovative ideas at the Istituto Europeo del Design in Rome. But it was her start at leather goods brand Trussardi, that inspired her love of artisan craftsmanship and the art of handbags and accessories. After eight years at Trussardi, she joined Salvatore Ferragamo as head of their leather goods division, and would then launch her own brand, Elena Ghisellini, in 2003. Here the Italian artist is able to fully express her creative vision, with piercing, geometric shapes, and bold features like iridescent colors, weaving, fur and metalwork. Fashion, with serious punctuation. “It is important to have a product that you immediately recognize,” says Ghisellini, “I do not want to be commercial. I want to be unique.” Her personal collections highlight her daring aesthetic, a favorite of fashionistas and celebrities like Olivia Palermo and Jessica Alba. She continues to collaborate with different luxury design houses like Givenchy, and most recently she was appointed Head Accessory Designer of Emilio Pucci. When in LA, Elena enjoys a little fun in the sun at some of our primo locations. –Courtney Fortune
