STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE Remember when it was considered déclassé for A-list movie stars to appear in TV commercials? You’d never find stars as big as George Clooney or Brad Pitt pimping coffeemakers, or Matthew McConaughey hawking automobiles. Likewise, fashion magazines (this one included) once shied from having reality television celebs on their covers. ‘Bottom feeders,’ whispered the luxury brands. These days, reality stars are as welcome on covers as Anna Wintour at fashion shows, and on this issue, we feature Garcelle Beauvais, who follows Lisa Vanderpump and Erika Jayne, as the third Housewives of Beverly Hills cast member on our cover. Robert Lynden photographed the elegant Garcelle, who brought her go-to glam team: makeup artist Julie Jules, and hairstylist Robear—both won Daytime Emmys for their work on Garcelle’s other show, The Real. As in my own childhood, bullying is shared by many that we interview. Acrimonious incidents during those impressionable years leave their indelible scars, to which actress Kelly Hu will attest. Years of bullying were so hurtful she became suicidal. If she could go back in time, she’d tell her teen self not to worry—that life gets better. What an understatement. The ageless ex-Miss Hawaii and non-stop movie star is now single, happy, and living her best life (p46). On everyone’s lips is a new beauty brand, Nude Envie (French pronunciation, “on-vee”) by creator Isabel Madison, a second-generation makeup maven whose good fortune is a byproduct of her altruistic passion for helping all women beautify through her easy, no-nonsense system. We feature lovely Isabel in a photoshoot, also by Lynden, that I styled in elegant looks by Escada, Dolce&Gabbana, Alexander McQueen, and Helmut Lang (p54). In New York, I invited four brilliant photographers to come out and play. Still-life photographer John Lawton delivered a beautiful series of shoe photos capturing CHANEL , Jimmy Choo, Roger Vivier, Dee Ocleppo, and more (p32). Brilliant artist/photographer Andrew Matusik created an epic beauty story—morphing images of four models he shot in his studio with pictures of Mt. Rushmore. Photographers Holly Parker and Arthur Belebeau, along with

their stylists Jessie Ajluni and Mimi Lombardo, respectively, took their models out onto the bustling streets of New York. They produced two stunning fashion stories: Parker with Olesya Ivanishcheva (p78), and Belebeau with our Fall issue cover girl, Lindsay Whidby (p88)—both beauties with New York Models. Meanwhile, here in Los Angeles, photographer Marta Elena Vassilakis returned to GENLUX with a brilliant fashion feature with the gorgeous Angelina Pirts from Industry Models (p68). Now, I’m not a big Brad Pitt fan, but his commercial for De’Longhi sold me. Have you seen it? It goes like this: Brad heads out for an early morning motorcycle ride along the PCH to pick up a bag of fresh coffee beans. A hypnotic soundtrack wafts in the background. Brad stops in for a leisurely spell at his mechanic’s shop before riding back to his Architectural Digest-like home. He goes to the kitchen, pours the beans into his De’Longhi bean-to-cup maker, and with the touch of a button, voilà! A nice hot cappuccino swirls forth. The camera zooms in tight on Brad sipping the fruits of his labor with a cat-that-ate-the-canary grin. Cut to logo. Perfetto! Can’t have his life? No problem. At least you can have his coffeemaker.

On August 15, 2021, we lost one of the preeminent fashion photographers. Yasuhiro Wakabayashi, known professionally as Hiro, created many of VOGUE and HARPER’S BAZAAR’s most memorable still-life images. His closeup photograph of model Jerry Hall’s profile blowing a whisp of smoke into the bright blue sky became a classic . It, like all of Hiro’s photographs, made you stop and want to explore deeper. He used unusual points of view merging products with nature, multiple exposures and forced perspective to create dynamic and timeless images. He was 90. G

96 GENLUX HOLIDAY 50 SUMMER 2021 2021
Your breakfast? Coffee. You’re wearing? A UNITY sweatshirt from my line, 33 Edge (33edge.com). It came about during the riots and protests when everyone was so divided. So I created this line with messages of KINDNESS, HUMANITY, and EQUALITY. The graphics are done in a gradient of skin colors to symbolize inclusivity. I dedicated the RESCUE T-shirt to my dog Shu whom I lost in September—those proceeds will help animal rescues. Everyday style? Sweats and T-shirts and a pair of sneakers, or I love my combat boots from bootcampaign.org. They’re actual combat boots, and the proceeds go to help vets. Beauty secret? No kids. I say this jokingly but with some truth. When women have children, it’s exhausting. Not having kids, I have less stress, and I’m able to sleep in. Maternal instincts? When I was very young, I played house and wanted to be the mommy. But after my parents divorced, I realized you don’t have to be married to be happy or have children to be complete. I was so much happier alone. I really enjoy traveling and being a free spirit. Your boyfriend? Not anymore. We recently broke up. It could not have been a better and more friendly breakup. I feel like people
Long relationships? Yes, one was 12 years. That was a friendly breakup too. He got married to a woman with three kids, and he’s now a wonderful dad. I’m so happy for him. We strive to love someone so much that if you cannot make them happy—and being with you is not the best for them— you’re happy when they find the person who makes them happy. School bullying? If you ask anybody, I was the most bullied kid in the entire school. I couldn’t even go to football games without fear of being beaten up. It started in 7th grade. Kids would spit on me. Going through the hallway was like the gauntlet. I became suicidal. I blame myself because I had a big mouth and was not taking crap from anybody. I always wanted to stand out, and it doesn’t go over well, especially in Hawaii. It wasn’t until I graduated and moved to Los Angeles that I found a whole city trying to stand out. Beauty pageants? The pageants can be a great stepping stone for women trying to better themselves or their situation. When I won Miss Teen USA, it changed the trajectory of my life. With the winnings, I moved to LA and pursued my acting career without worrying about finances. I went back in ‘93, won Miss Hawaii, and ran for Miss USA. Pageants are good for self-analyzation and making improvements. Spirit animal? In Hawaii, we have ‘Aumakua—Hawaiian Ancestral Spirits. Our family ‘Aumakua was an owl. Owls are pretty cool, right? Biggest worry? I’m not a big worrier. My life is so great right now—I really feel like I shouldn’t
Acting career? I’m in a great position in my life as an actor, where I don’t work so much that I get exhausted and frustrated, and I don’t work so little that I worry about paying my bills. I’m in a sweet spot where I get to have a life and can go to the supermarket without being bothered for an autograph. Biggest blessing? My mom always said I was born under a lucky star, and I feel like I have been. So I was blessed with a lot of positivity around me. I know that things are always working out for me. I believe in what the Universe or God has in store for me, and it’s all going to be okay. Biggest heartbreak? Loss. Losing my father and my dog. Your hero? My mother. I know we always say that in pageants, but she raised two kids by herself. She was smart and saved her money and invested. Now she owns a lot of property. At 80, my parents moved to Vegas and are living the life, playing Bingo, taking art classes, and going to casinos. I tell her not to gamble my whole inheritance away. Shopping haunts? Amazon. Hoarder tendencies? I have the hoarding gene. My grandmother was a hoarder, and my mother was a hoarder. I’ve been here for 28 years and have accumulated so much crap that I’m ready for Armageddon. I need to do some purging. Charity work? I’m raising money for Best Buddies Hawaii, which I’ve worked with since 2003. They help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and teach compassion, inclusion, and tolerance.

Actress Kelly Hu couches her answers to our conversation, saying, “I might be a little brain foggy today because I received my booster this morning.” The forever-young actress, best known for her roles in Scorpion King, X-Men, and Martial Law, reveals during our GENLUX Two-Word Interview how, at this moment, she’s single and living her best life, thank you very much. -SK
Fantasy dinner? Jesus. Who else is there? He’s my number-one guy. I mean, after you talk to Jesus, who’s left? Wait, wouldn’t it be cool to have Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, and Moses all at the same table discussing what the world is like today? Embarrassing moment? I have so many. Just last week, I fell off a chair at an event. My whole ass hit the ground. I was all dressed up and slipped off the bench and landed on my butt, and it was a full minute before I realized what had happened. My friend looked back at me and said, ‘What happened?’ If he were a good friend, he would have fallen on the ground too! Time machine? I wish I could go back and tell my suicidal self how much better life was going to be. Your mentor? I’m so grateful for my Kamehameha High School drama teacher, Mr. Bertino. The only tools I had were from high school drama, so they were invaluable when I moved out here to act. I tried recently to reach out to him. I searched out his daughter, and she said he now has Alzheimer’s. I tried. School reunions? I don’t go to my reunions. I went to my 10th and still didn’t feel comfortable. What’s next? My parents are coming in from Las Vegas for Thanksgiving. I booked another movie, so I have to go away on Saturday. When I come back, I’m going to look at getting a new pet, a new soulmate. G

Your tribe? I have a younger brother and a younger sister. My mom is very quiet, feminine, and tiny and she took care of us. My dad passed away only a few months ago. Favorite child? My younger sister would say it was her, but no, no. In my family, it was me! I didn’t use to admit it, but fuck them—I’ll admit it (laughs). When my dad would go to the doctor, the doctor would ask, ‘How many kids do you have?’ My dad would answer, ‘I have three criminals. All they want is money!’ Your kids? My oldest is 25 and in San Francisco, attending dental school. My daughter is 22 and going to LMU in an MFT program with specialization in art therapy, and my 17-yearold son likes driving cars, bulldozers, tractors and wants to be a policeman. Your playlist? For starters, I have Michael Jackson, the Bee Gees, Nora Jones, Julio Iglesias, and Charles Aznavour—I always have music on.

Makeup memory? I would sneak makeup into high school, put it on, and remove it before coming home. I loved it! Back then, it was silly frosted blue eye shadow.

Fashion faves? I wear a lot of CHANEL; it’s classic feminine. A good CHANEL blazer is everything. Bottega Veneta: Who’s not in love with all that stuff right now? Monse: love that brand. Cut-off jeans and a lot of boots. Obsessed! Leather jackets. I have Sergio Rossi cowboy boots, booties, everything. I love long backless dresses. I kind of do everything. Mostly solids.
Your childhood? I grew up in Encino with super strict, protective parents. My dad scared off every boy in the neighborhood. No one was allowed to even look at me! I was famous for having a dad that everyone was terrified of, and I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup until I was 19 or 20.

On a morning drive to a workout in Malibu, Isabel Madison’s negative mind is yammering INTER UX incessantly. A stream of doubt weighs the validity of her new cosmetics company: Why are you putting all this money and time into this new makeup line with no guarantees? Is it worth it? Are you crazy? I EL M AD To mollify (if need be) any future embarrassment, not a soul knows about her venture— not even her best friend, Brooke Burke. “But when I walked in,” Isabel says, “the very first words from Brooke’s lips were, ‘Oh, my gosh, I love your lipstick; who makes it?’” “That was the tipping point,” claims Isabel. “I thought, okay, worst-case scenario: if no one buys it, I’ll have gifts for everyone for the rest of my life, and from that moment, all fear left me.” Good thing. Success was idling around the corner. First, Barneys New York picked up the collection, then Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, and online sales soared. Her easy-to-use color system and creamy texture proved to be on point. Here, the fashionable CEO and creative director of Nude Envie (pronounced “on-vee”) continues the conversation through our GENLUX Two-Word Interview. —SK
Guilty pleasure? Potato chips. Sleeping in. Nightstand reading? Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss, The Surrender Experiment by Michael Singer, and Daring Greatly by Brené Brown. Getting rid of fear and being vulnerable. I’m working on it. First gig? After leaving Max Factor, where my dad was head of R&D, he started Visage de Beauté, and I became his protegee and apprentice. I would help select the colors and melt and mold the pieces. I was a child. I was only 12 or 13. I had to work growing up. I think they have laws against that now, right? Your strength? Color! I’ve always been particular about color. Some colors bring me so much joy and happiness. Lipstick is one of those things where I couldn’t find the right color. I would mix eye shadows into my lipsticks to create the right color. Business secret? Perseverance. I locked myself up in a room for a few years, did all the paperwork and legalities. I was adamant I wanted a creamy texture. It can’t melt, and I didn’t want it to break. It was the same lab my dad used, and they couldn’t get it right, so I had to make a change. Working with the right lab is like a marriage—it has to be a happy place. Biggest regret? My biggest regret is settling. Makeup goal? The ultimate goal is to help women from feeling overwhelmed with too
Your heroes? My dad was my hero. His strength, his brilliance. He was book smart and street smart. I was also obsessed with Wonder Woman. First of all, she was beautiful, and she helped everyone. She was a good Samaritan. She was sexy with elegance. Flower or gardener? In my relationships, I’m the gardener. But I’m allowing myself to be the flower. I love that role, too. There needs to be some balance. We gardeners love to nourish and take care of everyone. Binge watching? Versailles on Netflix. Charity work? We collaborated with Patrick Foley, Farrah Fawcett’s former makeup artist, on a pink lipstick called Farrah. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Farrah Fawcett Foundation in supporting cutting-edge HPVrelated cancer research, patient assistance, and prevention. Teleportation destination? It has to be up high with an ocean view—peaceful, quiet, with a breeze, 80 degrees, with a big tree I can sit under like a Chinese elm. I’m on the ground with a nice little pillow. I’m barefoot, and I’m looking up and seeing the birds. Happiest moments? When my children were little, I loved hearing them laugh. I also loved the sound of them running toward my bed in the morning. My youngest slept in my bed till he was 12. I’ll definitely get punished if anyone hears about that one, but I loved it. What’s next? I want my other baby, my business, to help more women. I want to educate and help them feel better about themselves. That’s a dream.

THE REAL, REAL HOUSEWIFE OF BEVERLY HILLS Most, if not all, of her Real Housewives of Beverly Hills castmates would attest to Garcelle Beauvais’s outspokenness and brutal honesty. As her new book is about to launch, she shares with our STEPHEN KAMIFUJI about the times she wanted to quit the show, and the s sitcom star who had a huge impact on her life.

HOLIDAY 2021 GENLUX 65
Modeling career? I was discovered by Irene Marie, who had a modeling agency in Miami. Eileen Ford came to scout and brought me to New York to be with the Ford Modeling Agency. I lived at Eileen’s house. Your family? I have three boys. My younger twins are now 14. Your bedtime? I was asleep by 11:30. I put in earplugs because my boys had a sleepover. Your brows? Anastasia started doing them way back when she was in this little room with no windows at Juan Juan and working her tail off. She’s very independent and always said she didn’t want to get married. I invited her to my wedding, and when I threw the bouquet, nobody stood a chance. She dove for that bouquet—she loved the competition of it all. Now she’s a beauty icon! Glam team? I love my glam team, which is on set today. Robear does my hair, and Julie Jules does my makeup. During the pandemic, when everyone was out of work, we started The Real. We ended up doing 170 episodes from my house. They got in the union, and each won a Daytime Emmy for their work.
Three blessings? My health—thank God I didn’t get COVID, my perseverance, and all the love that I receive daily. Your passion? I’m trying to focus on the little things and enjoy every minute of my life. Your heroes? My mother and Diahann Carroll. Growing up, we never got to see beautiful black women on TV, and I remember the first time I saw Diahann. She was on her own show, Julia, and then she was on Dynasty. They usually didn’t portray us as intelligent and well-spoken — but here she was — so for me, she made a huge mark. Meet her? I did. I was so starstruck and so excited to meet Diahann, I couldn’t even tell her how much I loved her and how much she changed my perception of what we looked like on TV.

Everyday style? Classic but modern. Chic! A nice pair of J-Brand jeans, a nice COS blouse, a Manolo heel, and a Gucci bag. Shopping haunts? I’m a Saks, Neimans, and Zara girl. I think it’s nice to mix it up. Fantasy dinner? If I could pick any five, I’d have Michelle Obama, Brad Pitt, my mom, and Cardi B., who would be great for laughs, and then I’d pick my girlfriend, Nicole. Nicole and I wrote my book together, Love Me As I Am. Essays from my life in Haiti to today. Nicole and I have the same sense of humor. Favorite quote? Real queens fix each other’s crowns. Biggest regret? That I never had a relationship with my dad. He wasn’t in my life, and when he came back, I really didn’t give him a chance. He wrote me a letter before he died, and I didn’t read it. My mom threw it out. Best trait? My sense of humor.
Childhood crush? It was Michael Jackson.
Character change? The first thing that came to mind is allowing a man to take care of me.
Biggest heartbreak? I would say my divorce to my twin’s dad.
Flower or Gardener? I would say I’m the gardener, but I wish I was the flower.
Guilty pleasure? Shopping and Oreo cookies. It’s my favorite cookie.
Any hobbies? I work so much that I don’t have hobbies. Being creative is my thing.
Beauty secret? Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. I use Epicurean; I love their products. I keep it really simple because I have eczema, so I stay on top of it. I do many facials at the Burke Williams Spa on Sunset.
Embarrassing moment? When everyone found out about my divorce. I had written an email to some friends, and it got leaked to the press, so everyone found out.
RHOBH challenges? There are aspects I love, like the glamour and hanging out with the women, but other aspects aren’t as fun. It’s really challenged me to stand up for myself to be outspoken and be honest to a fault—I think the other women will attest to that.
Charity work? Angels for Humanity organization that helps migrant children, especially Haitians. UNICEF and the LA Mission. My kids and I feed the homeless on the Holidays, like Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. I’ve been a part of the Women’s Step-Up Network for years.
Final straw? Oh, yeah! There have been moments I’ve been in the car, and I’ve called crying to my manager to get me out of here. You’re definitely pushed and challenged on the show.
Future plans? It’s really to continue being an entrepreneur. I’m building my brand and continuing to give back. And hopefully, find my soulmate and get married.
Show benefit? I never thought I’d do reality TV. It was never on my radar, but I wanted to stay in LA more, and my boys were starting middle school, so while it’s not something I’d planned to do, it’s allowed me to work while staying in town more, which is a great benefit.
Any men? If you’re asking if there are any on the radar, only God really knows. G

“I’ve been blessed to do some incredible things throughout my career,” acknowledges Garcelle Beauvais, “But I’ve never gotten more attention as when it was announced I’d be on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. It’s unbelievable how invested people are with the show. It’s quite a phenomenon!” On the franchise since Season 10, the outspoken and brutally honest Haitian-born model, actress, author, and humanitarian, shares about herself during our GENLUX Two-Word Interview. —SK

This season, I’m looking forward to traveling to the beautiful land and mountains of Switzerland. What I love most is sipping on hot chocolate by the fire in a cozy chalet. I’m ready for the cold weather, aren’t you? HEAD Sportswear Legacy has partnered with Lindsey Vonn to create a fun and elegant collection. I’m thinking wearing her clothes will get me that boost of confidence on the slopes. Another favorite of mine this season is Alexander Vauthier’s sky blue sweater. Trop beau!! —Samia

GENLUX The Four Best In-Office Skin Treatments
As your aesthetician advisor at GENLUX, my passion is spreading knowledge on achieving glowing and youthful skin. The coming season is an ideal time for laser treatments since the colder weather aids in healing the skin. I am sharing my top four laser treatments to schedule at this time of the year. -Ninka B @ninkabskin
1. IPL
Plus these great products—that work!
(aka photo rejuvenation) is one of the most popular treatments in aesthetic medicine. It uses broad-spectrum light to target sunspots, sun damage and treats redness in the skin. This type of treatment is ideal for rosacea skin types and skin with small irregular pigmentation. Posttreatment, you will notice a smoother texture, smaller pores (a great benefit of IPL), and an overall radiant skin with a more even tone. It’s best to do a series of four treatments spaced from four to six weeks apart.
La Prairie Skin Caviar Nighttime Oil Line smoothing night treatment. Uncreases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Smooths skin visibly. Enhances the appearance of firmness and elasticity. 20ml, $530, laprairie.com
2. VBEAM
laser is a fantastic option for areas of the skin with minor vascular skin conditions such as spider veins and broken blood vessels. The laser produces an intense burst of light during the treatment that selectively treats the lesion without impacting the surrounding skin tissue. We all have tiny visible capillaries, most present around our nose, cheeks, or decolletage. I recommend the VBEAM laser once a year to close the capillaries making your skin appear more youthful and healthy. It is a quick treatment, and you will be pleasantly satisfied with the results!
4. CO
Sircuit Cosmeceuticals Relax & Recover Reactive skin moisturizing gel for sensitive and reactive skin. .50 oz., $95, sircuitskin.com
3. CLEAR + BRILLIANT
is by far one of my favorite lasers! Known as a non-ablative fractional laser that generates heat deep beneath the skin to stimulate new collagen production. As the device rolls over the surface, it delivers microscopic columns of energy to the upper layers of the skin. It replaces damaged skin with healthy tissue, giving you clearer, younger-looking skin. This is a great laser to do every few months as a maintenance treatment for your skin! The recovery time is quick, and the results are as promised.
2
is known as an ablative laser. This type of skin resurfacing is the most aggressive, produces the most dramatic results, and requires longer healing times. The CO2 effectively removes skin imperfections, such as acne scars, enlarged pores, improves the skin’s texture, and minimizes wrinkles and fine lines. Over the following week post-treatment, your skin will start to regenerate. The top layer of the skin will peel off, and beautiful fresh skin will come to the surface. A single treatment can achieve tremendous results, such as lifted, smoother and tighter skin.
Hourglass Equilibrium Instant Plumping Eye Mask Reduces puffiness and under-eye circles. Use alone or before makeup for an instant refreshing boost of hydration. 1oz, $68, Sephora.com
Seiso Ceramide Moisture Milk Obsessed! Lightweight, milky emulsion delivers patented ceramide complex for weightless, layered hydration. Leaves skin calm, nourished, balanced and glowing! $95 Seiso Fuwafuwa Foaming Cleanser Gentle on skin, but washes makeup off thoroughly! $38, seisojbeauty.com
My mission is to create a beautiful future for your skin. Enjoy the laser treatments that help to achieve your healthiest, most radiant complexion. I wish you all a wonderful winter season! -Ninka B @ninkabskin

Halloween is over, but don’t say goodbye to those pumpkins yet! There’s always something delectable to make from pumpkins during the fall and winter months. When you combine the nutty, sweet pulp and aromatic spices, it turns into holiday heaven! Use them in your décor and eat them later. Don’t just grow the basic varieties! Branch out with unique, colorful, whimsical, and wow-worthy specimens! You will impress all your friends and have tons to share.
GROWING & STORING Pumpkins are classified as win-
ter squash grown in the summer and harvested in the fall. Mark your calendar for July 2022 to grow them next year. It takes 75 to 100 days till harvest, so your pumpkins would be ready just in time for Halloween and all the holidays that follow. Growing pumpkins can be challenging if you don’t have the room because they will need lots of it. Find a sunny spot on the south side of your property that is out of the way. Planting the seeds on a hill or slope helps the soil to warm up and drain water faster. Water with a deep gentle soaking once a week. Resist watering when leaves droop in the afternoon heat while the soil is still damp. Its foliage will perk up once it cools. Pumpkins are

MY FAVES
Sugar Pie Pumpkin Its fine orange flesh is superb for rich pumpkin pies, soups, muffins, and breads. Hollow out the smaller ones, roast until tender, and fill with savory custards or small portions of soup for a fun dinner-party treat. The skin is very thin, and its flesh sweet and fine grained. It is also quite dry, which is great for making pies.
Peanut Pumpkin This heirloom pumpkin has distinctive peanut-like growths peppering the exterior of its pink-hued rind. Unique looking, the “peanuts” are a buildup of excess sugar. These warty pumpkins have extremely sweet flesh, suitable for desserts such as pies, bread, and cheesecakes.
116 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2021
Fairytale Pumpkin, (Also called Musquee De Provence) This is an old-time pumpkin from France. It is delicately flavored and heavy, producing fine-grained squash that bakes well, great for pies. Fairytale pumpkins are one of the only hard squash varieties that can be consumed raw and are known for their long storage capabilities, delicate flesh, and sweet flavor. Big, flat, and shaped like a giant wheel of cheese, these pumpkins are deeply ribbed with a very smooth, hard surface. They are dark green when immature, and when cured, turn gorgeous deep mahogany or burnt orange.
Lovely and decorative, these unusual blue-green and deeply ribbed pumpkins are my favorite ones to grow, eat, and decorate for the fall. The golden-yellow flesh is medium sweet, stringless, and very good for baking. Watch out: its skin is quite hard, so use caution when cutting this one open.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT PUMPKIN • Choose a pumpkin that feels Lumina Pumpkins These white pumpinks are perfect for painting. Their interior flesh is orange, making for a fun spooky effect when carved and illuminated. Don’t stop there, though! They have a delicious flavor and are excellent baked into a pie. Jarrahdale pumpkins These come from the town of Jarrahdale in New Zealand.
firm and heavy for its size and has consistent coloring throughout. • Turn the pumpkin over, and place pressure on the bottom with your thumbs. If it flexes or gives, your pumpkin isn’t fresh. • Look for soft spots or open cuts that would indicate damage or early spoilage. • Pick a pumpkin with a solidly attached stem. • Surface insect damage shouldn’t affect the taste.

Pumpkin is great for both savory and sweet applications. Sweet and refined varieties are best for pies, while dry and dense varieties are well suited for soups and stews.

DISPLAYING & STORING PUMPKINS • Once harvested, set them out
of the direct sunlight to cure for a month, to prolong their color and quality. • Display pumpkins for a few weeks. For long-time storage, find a cool spot. • Never place on a wooden tabletop or carpet. The bottom can soften and weep pumpkin juice. The moisture in the shell can damage wood and even etch stone. • A hard nonporous surface can cause your pumpkin to age. Put a cloth or a circle of cardboard between your pumpkin and the surface when you display them. A tablecloth with a plastic place mat underneath works well. • Store in a single layer on a surface that allows the pumpkin to breathe for overwintering, like wooden pallets, cardboard, or straw. • Most pumpkin varieties will store for at least three months. Some varieties will store successfully for six months or more.
ROASTED PUMPKIN WITH SAGE Cube pumpkin into 1-inch cubes without skins, drizzle with olive oil, sage, and salt, and roast it in the oven at 400 degrees until done (about 40 minutes). When roasting pumpkin, the natural sugars come out and caramelize. PUMPKIN SMOOTHIE This Greek yogurt and pumpkin smoothie is the perfect breakfast for the pumpkin obsessed who is on the go. Ingredients 1/2 cup pumpkin puree 2 tsp brown sugar, packed 1/2 tsp pumpkin-pie spice or cinnamon 2 tsp vanilla extract 6 oz Greek yogurt 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup ice
Figural Pumpkin Soy Candle, made with delightful notes of dark brown sugar, cinnamon, spice, creamy pumpkin puree. 5oz. $24, surlatable.com
Sur La Table pumpkin napkins, set of 4, $30, surlatable.com
Instructions Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
Pumpkins are a fall and winter staple, and the options are endless! You might have missed growing pumpkins last season, but you still have time to enjoy eating and displaying them throughout this holiday season! Choose white, green, beige or orange pumpkins, from minis to giants. There’s a variety of pumpkin out there for you.

Go for a charming weekend at Carmel’s Quail Lodge and Golf Club.
MUST GOLF
Play a round on the expertly groomed fairways and pool table-smooth greens of the 6,500-yard, Robert Muir Gravesdesigned Quail Lodge Golf Course. The par 71 Carmel Valley course is perfect for all ages and skill levels, offering just enough sand and trees to make life interesting. Visit quaillodge.com/golf for tee times.
MUST STAY:
One of our favorite short-and-suite weekend jaunts is up the coast to the quaint town of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Located in Monterey County, it’s about 330 miles from LA, and 120 from San Francisco. From LA: Jet Suite X flies out of Burbank or jump in the car and take the beautiful 5-hour scenic drive up the 101. Avoid the boring 5 freeway (the extra minutes on the 101 are well worth it). Plan to drive along the famed 17-Mile Drive ($10.75 per car), a meandering toll road that winds along a red-dotted line through cozy neighborhoods, past posh country clubs, and down along the pebble-rock tidepools where the Pebble Beach Golf Course shares the coastline. Park alongside the courses par-3, 106-yard, 7th hole, and watch golfers navigate the winds hoping to land on the green.
