hile working on this Travel issue, I had a sudden urge to hop on a plane and fly far, far away. Writer Henry Miller once said, “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” So true! Traveling opens your mind to new possibilities—it’s when I draw the most inspiration. When I’m on a plane my favorite moment, next to landing at my destination, is when everybody is sleeping—so quiet and peaceful. Next week I’m heading to Ischia on the Amalfi Coast. I’ll take some snaps and blog about it on genlux.com. Wherever you decide to go this summer, it’s time to take a new cute swimsuit. Hopefully, you hit the gym a month ago to prepare, but no matter, there’s a swimsuit, and/or cover-up for every body type. You’ll find one that works for you. One of my faves is the crème and black Tara Matthews bikini. My new beauty obsession is Caudalie divine dry oil. I recently discovered this perfect body oil that moisturizes, nourishes and enhances my skin. My latest fashion obsession is the Tom Ford white tailored suit (p78). So daring, yet chic and elegant, and the long pants will make you look taller than you actually are. J’adore! Looking for some relaxation time? Need to be pampered? Maybe it’s time for a mother-and-daughter vaca…
22 GENLUX SUMMER 2012
or how long has it been since you’ve escaped with your best girlfriends? In this issue we bring you a selection of amazing getaways. Let yourself be transported to fabulous places starting with Imanta Punta de Mita Resort, a spiritual experience for your mind and body. If you’re newlyweds who are still looking for a honeymoon escapade, Turtle Island in Fiji could be for you (p110). It’s paradise on Earth, frequented by A-list Hollywood actors. Don’t be surprised if one evening you find yourself having dinner next to Drew Barrymore, who recently got married, or even Angelina Jolie, who’s planning to wed Brad Pitt this summer. Just up the way, serenity awaits at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa (p109). I’m planning my next getaway to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Since I was a little girl, I’ve always wanted to visit this larger-than-life country. We’re very excited to have on our cover the very accomplished and versatile Ginnifer Goodwin (p30). Best known for her role as Margene Heffman on Big Love, the young Hollywood actress had no problem transitioning from one hit show to another. She is currently starring as Mary Margaret Blanchard, aka Snow White, on the ABC series Once Upon a Time. Bisous à tous!

Following the company tradition of supporting international art and cultural institutions, watchmaker Vacheron Constantin partnered with the American Friends of the Louvre for a gala dinner in recognition of the museum’s contemporary-art programs. The event, hosted by Vacheron Constantin North American president Hughes de Pins, chairman of the American Friends of the Louvre Christopher Forbes, and board members Becca Cason Thrash and Sabrina Kay, raised approximately $200,000 in support of the mission of the American Friends of the Louvre. Guests included Sharon Stone, Michael Mann, and the honored special guest Henri Loyrette, president and director of the Louvre Museum. The evening was held at the home of Larry Gagosian, where guests were able to view his private art collection and a display of Vacheron Constatin timepieces.

Nancy Davis hosted the 19th Annual Race to Erase MS gala at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza. This year’s theme, Glam Rock to Erase MS, didn’t disappoint with performances by Fitz & the Tantrums, American Idol winner David Cook, The Tenors, and Stevie Wonder, who also led the traditional finale, “Lean on Me,” with Nancy Davis, La Toya Jackson, Clay Walker, and David Cook. Celebrities walked the runway in a fashion show featuring Andy Hilfiger’s Andrew Charles Rock ‘n’ Roll Collection. A live auction, called by Shaun Robinson and Jason Kennedy, rounded out the event and featured amazing luxury experiences. The evening, sponsored by EMD Serono, the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, Associated Television International, and Taylor Armstrong American Airlines, raised $1.8 million to benefit the Nancy Davis Foundation for Multiple Sclerosis and its Center without Walls.

innifer Goodwin is glowing. The 34-year-old star of the ABC series Once Upon a Time floats into the Smashbox Studio for her Genlux photoshoot with her new beau in tow. He’s Josh Dallas, her co-star on the hit show...and in her life.
Ginnifer’s favorite things: Restaurant: Corky’s Barbeque in Memphis, Tennessee Songs: “One I Love” by a Celtic artist named Karan Casey, and “Something” by the Beatles. Person: My sister, Melissa. TV shows: Lost, while it was on the air, and Downton Abbey on PBS. Car: My Mercury Mariner hybrid. Movie: The Thin Man
Perhaps best known for her role as Margene Heffman on HBO’s Big Love, she’s also appeared in a ton of popular and critically acclaimed TV and film projects like Mona Lisa Smile, Win a Date with Tad Hamilton, He’s Just Not That Into You, Walk the Line, The Single Man, and, for one of her coolest roles, she was the voice of the teenage mermaid in SpongeBob’s Welcome to Bikini Bottom Triangle. The first thing you’ll notice about Ginnifer is her beautiful complexion. “I wash my face once a day and use sunscreen. That’s it,” she says, adding, “Oh, and I don’t pick at anything. Noooooo never.” The fair-skinned beauty also steers clear of fake color. No spray tans or tanning booths in this girl’s life. “No! I can’t! I play Snow White. I absolutely have to stay out of the sun.” Today, the longtime favorite on the red-carpet fashion scene is wearing a hotpink sleeveless Equipment blouse that she’s chopped short, a ginormous charcoal gray Isabel Marant paperbag maxi-skirt, some Isabel Marant platform sandals, and a splash of CHANEL Number 5 au Premier. “I think I’m classic,” Ginnifer notes of her personal fashion style, “but with a big fat twist. I really like traditional shapes that are exaggerated. Like a conservative skirt that’s huge.
I like shoulder pads, but I love them really big. I like a fifties-style skirt, but I like it with a tad too much crinoline.” One of Ginnifer’s “challenging” areas she’s all too aware of are her hips. “They’re disproportionately big. They’re wider than my torso in all ways, so I either minimize that or really play them up—I go one way or the other. I generally don’t leave that part of my body alone.” As gregarious and outgoing as she is, Ginnifer considers herself a homebody, and once you weigh the facts, she might be right. She loves to embroider handkerchiefs, pillowcases, tea towels, and aprons. She watches old movies—especially dramatic comedies, and frequents the flea markets. She’s a bit of a bookworm (currently reading The Birth House and The Wizard of Oz). She enjoys cooking macaroni and cheese, and her favorite getaway is, well, her home in LA. And then there are the other loves of her life, her cats. “Both are rescues. Merlin is an all-black American shorthair that I rescued from the Pasadena SPCA. He’s like my child. I spoil that cat rotten. I’m obsessed with him. Actually, he thinks he’s a dog.” Out on the set, photographer Marc Baptiste, aiming to spark a particular emotion from Ginnifer, calls out to Josh to stand beside him. Like someone has just flipped a lightswitch, Ginnifer gets a little giddy and hearts flow from her eyes. Marc’s Canon camera can’t even recycle fast enough to capture all of the beautiful expressions. Recently she celebrated the happiest moment of her life at, where else, the Happiest Place on Earth. “I had dinner the other night at Disneyland with my family and my best friends on the planet— I celebrated my birthday at Club 33 [The theme park’s very private VIP club]. Yep, it was all very exciting,” Ginnifer says with a smile in her voice, “Walt Disney hung the moon.” And judging from Ginnifer’s giddiness around Josh, we’re pretty sure he has too. G

When you love shoes so much that your apartment is overflowing with them; when, like New York socialite Tinsley Mortimer, heels are the only thing you’ll ever wear—well, save for a pair of Converse—then of course, in many ways, they become a part of your life. “My favorite pair right now are these bright neon and bright pink Jimmy Choos. I love Brian Atwood and probably have more of his shoes than any other. What about these amazing turquoise peacock ones? I also have these big chunky Alaia black satin shoes that were the inspiration for the illustration on my book cover. They’ll always be one of my favorites because I bought them when I started making my own money.” For our interview, ironically, Tinsley sits barefoot in her Upper Chelsea pad, an old converted warehouse on NYC’s West Side once considered the fur district. One of her two “children,” her Chihuahua Bandy, is cuddled in her lap. The New York socialite fled to this side of town after her very public separation from Topper Mortimer, the blue-blood banker whose family once ran Standard Oil. At the time, Tinsley was filming the reality show H ig h S o c ie ty. As you can imagine, it’s never a good idea to break up on a reality show. Tinsley has been lying low the past few years and is just now getting back into circulation. One of the things that propelled her out again is her grueling nationwide tour in support of her new book about Minty Davenport—a fictitious young woman whose life parallels her own.
The Columbia graduate, who is reportedly a descendant of Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry and James Madison, shares from her soapbox about folks from the Upper East Side, like she’s slipped their grasp. “They don’t love change or those who go against the grain by doing th`ings that are public. These old-school people believe you’re only to be in the press three times: when you’re born, when you get married, and when you die. It’s difficult for them to deal with someone like me, who has done reality television and been in magazines and now has a book out. I work hard for my money. Why shouldn’t I take the opportunities that are given? Why should I be ashamed to do things that are in the public if it’s how I earn a living? I’m not harming anyone. I love working and I’ve always been that way. It’s an amazing freedom to sustain oneself, and it’s so much more special to buy your own things.” Part of Tinsley’s self-sustainability comes from her successful clothing line with Samantha Thavasa (sold only in Japan). She’s also working on a handbag collection for the same brand, and would love to get involved in an interior design project or to extend into the pet area. As any bad socialite would do, Tinsley shares about her physical faults. “If there’s one area on my body I cover up, it’s my butt/thigh region. I like to wear a bubble shape to hide it. I always did have a bigger butt. When my mom would hold me as a baby she would say, ‘What is this? What is this muscle-y butt?’ I remember being teased about it by some boys when I was in the sixth grade. Maybe that’s why I feel like I have to hide it.” Seeing as the pouffy-party-dress-wearing Tinsley, the always proper girly-girl, is opening up, the topic of embarrassing moments also arises. “My most embarrassing moment just happened the other night. The good news is, I never felt like I had one, and now I do. Want to hear it? I was in this cute little slinky party dress sitting on the barstool at this restaurant. I leaned back and fell completely backwards, knocking my head on the floor. I’m sure there were body parts flying everywhere. I was so embarrassed I just got right back up and ran the hell out of there. I’m still bruised and still trying to blame it on the chair.” When asked if she’s a gardener or a flower in her relationships, she reflects on the question for quite a while. “I’m not sure how to answer that,” she says. “I feel like I’m always the gardener. Thank you for putting it that way. Now I have the perspective. Now I don’t want to be the gardener any more, I want to be the flower. Can’t I be both?” G

I left sunny California, and I’m back in London for a while, ready to direct my first film. I’m wearing my new Alexander McQueen jacket and driving my new favorite car. I’ve also changed my makeup, and my friends are horrified because I’ve fallen in love with green eye shadow—yes, I really have—and blue, too. This summer there are wonderful bursts of pinks, yellow, oranges, peaches, and green. Of course I only wear black. The shapes this season are flattering, and I especially adore the Dolce & Gabbana skirt and top which I tried on in Cannes—it looked incredible. My bits of summer advice? Be ready for change at any moment. Be experimental. Don’t plan too much.

SUMMER SHOPPING! —GEORGE BLODWELL Is it me, or is this year flying by? Summertime is already here, and I hope your living is easy. My fashion style tends to be a bit edgy, but I love good quality and tailoring above everything. Recently I was invited to see the new fall collection of Brunello Cucinelli, a classic Italianmade luxury brand. I was simply blown away with the very high standard of the fabrics, construction, and feel of their men’s collection. The ladies’ collection was fabulous, too. I just found these cool and very modern sapphire rings from Avakian jewelers. Just the right touch of color for any man! Finding a pair of really flattering summer shorts can be quite the challenge. I discovered and became a huge fan of the Setter Belize shorts from Orlebar Brown. They’re very well made, with pockets, even a zip pocket at the back, and great mesh inside for comfort and modesty. Above all, they look smart and even a little sexy. Choose your color and style from their varied selection. You can thank me after you see the results. I’ve acquired a new habit. Instead of running out for my morning coffee, I now use my really good-
looking Illy espresso maker. I love it! It saves time and money, and the espresso is rich and flavorful. Check them out. Gentlemen, good grooming is essential for us. If you’re looking for an immaculate shave, the best in razors or quality shave brushes, or even a manicure or pedicure, The Art of Shaving Barber Spa over on Brighton in Beverly Hills is a onestop destination. Ladies, send your man there to relax. He will adore it…and you. I like to splash on a nice cologne, and there are a few I’m fond of. One in particular is at the top of my list: Gendarme. Their original scent is my favorite. I receive many requests for its name, so now you know. I always enjoy my visits to Vida Emanuel, a small, discreet place where I go to get my brows cut and shaped. If your brows are in need of attention, this is the place to sort it out. Ladies already know that eyebrows are one of the most important features on your face. More important than everything? Stay happy! Love, George

QUIT IT. BY ALMIE ROSE
“T
his is how it works: you’re young until you’re not.” – Regina Spektor
It’s so simple, right? It’s one of those truths that’s just out there, floating around, like knowing that it gets cold at night in Santa Monica and that “Mad Men” is on Sunday nights and that if you hold your breath before you look at your credit card statement, it will be totally fine. But even though we know that this is true, we don’t really process it as an inevitability. We just go about our days, doing what we’ve always done. So here’s the thing: why would you wait until you get old to change something? If you’re in a relationship with someone who makes you miserable (and I have heard some HORROR stories), then why waste a single minute of your life, young or old, in that situation? I had a friend who dated a guy who called her “cute-fat.” She is 5’3” and weighs 125 pounds. She exercises and eats well. But she told us, “He just means that I’m not a model, I understand,” and would laugh nervously. You have to let people make their own mistakes and live their own lives—she’s a grown woman—but at a certain point I had to tell her, “It’s time to stop laughing. He makes you feel terrible and you know it.” And did she leave him after I said that? No. She had to realize it for herself. And when she did, and FINALLY left him, she felt even worse than before, because “I wasted so much of my time in that relationship.” But you can’t blame yourself for what you couldn’t see. And now that you see it, you’ll see it coming, and you won’t do it again. My point: sometimes the best thing to do is to quit. My definition of quitting is this: telling yourself, “I deserve better than this, this is not for me, I can do better, I am not happy, I will figure something else out.” It’s not being a coward. It’s being strong. It’s that scene in Pretty Woman where Julia Roberts goes back into the store in Beverly Hills, holding her shopping bags up to the women who refused to help her and says to them, “Big mistake. Huge.” Thus: Don’t like your job? Quit it. Don’t like your boyfriend or girlfriend? Quit it. Don’t like your marriage? Quit it. Don’t like your apartment? Quit it. Don’t like your neighborhood? Quit it. Don’t like your country? Quit it. Don’t like your friends? Quit them. Don’t like your habits? Quit them. Don’t like your kids? Too bad, that’s the one thing you can’t quit.
Is life that simple? Yes and no. If you hate your job and you want to quit, you’re going to have to make sacrifices until you can find another job or until you decide to live as simply as possible forever. Is it immature to quit because something is making you unhappy? No. Yes, money is important. It’s important to eat and pay rent. Is it important to go out to dinner several times a week and take trips over the weekend? No, not really. Make a trade. Make a difference in your life. Who the hell has ever looked back on their life and thought, “Damn! I really should have stayed at that job for six more months because it would have looked great on my résumé”? No one. If you’re in a relationship that you’re not happy in because you think it’s the best you can do or because this is just how it’s supposed to be, then you need to stop. Right now. No one wants to be your ‘best that you can do.’ You want to be with someone who is, at the very least, a decent human being, if you want to set the bar really low. You want to be with someone who has the kind of enthusiasm for you and your dreams and your goals that when you succeed they cheer you on Mary Tyler Moore–style by throwing their hat in the air in pure jubilation. We’re all gonna make it! We owe it to ourselves. And it’s not about walking around like we’re the best thing that ever happened to anyone. It’s not about ego. It’s about respecting ourselves. So quit it…and then go have a dance party.

GENLUXSHOP SHAPE SHIFTER Janina Gavankar is equal parts actress, musician, and self-proclaimed geek—though by far one of the most beautiful you’ll ever find writing code. In 2006, Janina had her most famous accomplishment among fellow geeks. While visiting Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island, she popped on the Virgin Airline chairman’s computer to became the first actor to sign up on Twitter. Last summer, she joined the cast of the HBO hit series True Blood, where she plays Luna Garza, Sam Merlotte’s new love interest (Sam Trammell). As fans of the show, and particularly of Janina, we’ll be delighted to watch her once again shapeshift from animal to human.

Glam with an edge. I like pieces that make you notice the art behind them. What’s your favorite item in your closet?
A super lush, gauzy, one-of-a-kind burn-out tee from my own line, Sparkle Tooth. What’s always in your purse?
I don’t have a purse! I have a custom-made iPhone case that holds my ID and credit card. What are you reading?

What’s your weekend look?
I live in my Doc Martens ‘Triumph’ boots. But if I have an event at night, I can go from tomboy to red carpet quickly…zero to sixty in seconds! If you could wear only one designer from head to toe, including accessories, who would it be?
I’m too much of a chameleon in my everyday life to ever commit. But if I must, I’ll go with Tom Ford because his clothes are feminine and strong. What’s your favorite low-price secret-weapon store?
When I’m in NYC, Topshop is my go-to. But also, I do love this secret downtown LA vintage warehouse. I could tell you, but then…

Here’s one of those, ‘Gee, why didn’t I think of that’ stories. Our ALMIE ROSE catches up with Kate Sekules, who came up with a brilliant website where you can swap your old clothes for “new” ones.
I
don’t know about you, but when I want to get rid of my old clothing I think about selling it on eBay for a hot second and then get annoyed by their fees and rules and I give up and wind up keeping the clothes in my closet for another six years. That’s no fun at all. But then a friend introduced me to ReFashioner.com ReFashioner is like eBay meets Chictopia. In other words, it allows users to, free of charge, swap their garments while providing a social networking feature, all in the name of fashion and fun. All you do is take photos of your garments and upload them to your “closet.” There’s a welcome strict quality control on the site that eBay is sorely lacking, because, let’s be honest, your 90s stone-washed Gap jeans aren’t vintage, they’re just old. If your clothing is approved, the ReFashioner team photoshops the background out for you and puts a price on your item. BUT: it’s in their own currency, ReDollars. As soon as that happens, you can use ReDollars to shop elsewhere on the site. And here’s where the social networking aspect comes in. Unlike with eBay, where you have mere sellers and buyers, on ReFashioner you’re known as an ‘owner’ (complete with a profile photo and bio) and your items are your ‘closet.’ If someone continually sells the fabbest of fab you can ‘stalk their closet.’ It’s like if Facebook were run by a bunch of honest fashion mavens. ReFashioner is where you go the day you just got that job for that hot new fashion company, but without the hot new fashion company paycheck. It’s essentially a designer resale store, but instead of buying and selling, you’re swapping. You can find an A.P.C. vinyl dress for well under $200, a variety of gently worn Louboutin heels, and if you were lucky, you snapped up that Alexander McQueen geometric design dress for under $500 posted by none other than the site’s founder, Kate Sekules. Every piece has a story. Literally. When you submit your garment you have to add to the ‘story’ section. Example for Kate’s McQueen: “Tragically, never worn. I’ve ‘almost’
worn it just too many times to justify hanging on, even though it’s the real McQueen, and I think I should collect it. But that’s not what ReFashioner’s about now, is it?” And Kate has a story all her own. Born and raised in London, Kate didn’t even start in fashion; in fact, she first became a professional boxer in New York, and even published a book about it (T he Boxer’s Heart). She then became editor-in-chief for Culture+Travel magazine. Food, travel and design were her passions, but she describes fashion as her “Avocation. But doing this [ReFashioner] has enabled me to see quite how much I love it best. Now I’m allowed to spend hours in vintage clothes stores. And that,” she laughs, “is what makes me the most happy.” I ask Kate, “What are some items you think everyone should have in their closets?” “Everyone always says things like ‘the classic trench’ or ‘a little black dress.’ I think, bugger that! I think everyone should have something that makes them feel crazy and amazing every time they put it on. I think everyone should have different colors, not just black. Find your palette. A tank is an amazing, useful thing. Tall shoes. A dress that makes you feel sexy.” “I think the first step is just to have fun. That’s the thing I miss most about London. London girls dress stupid,” she laughs with love. “You don’t mind looking like an idiot. You feel like wearing spots and stripes and a bowler hat one day. If you feel like it, you can pull it off. Just do it with joy. That’s my number-one advice: have fun and get dressed with joy. We’re so used to judging ourselves and our bodies, and if there’s any way you can not do that, it’s great. Look in the mirror and laugh and have fun with it!” Get started now! Soon the site is going to have an overhaul that will include a whole new batch of snaggable stuff and prime items from celebs’ closets. Also, the site will include the option to sell your items, if you don’t want to swap. Betatesters get access first. And registration is free! Sign up and get addicted. refashioner.com. G

Look for products that are free of parabens, silicone, PEGs, propylene, glycol, phthalates, synthetic colors and fragrances. When choosing your sunblock: Go for the zinc-based products that are chemical-free. For hair-color: Go with vegetable-based colors these days, since the product absorbs into the scalp. Packaging: Try to find eco-friendly packaging that uses sustainable materials. In your home: glass jars and containers provide alternatives to plastics, and they look pretty. For travel: There are great biodegradable bcp-free plastics that work well. “I smudge pencils with my fingers to define the eyes and then lightly set with a brush and powder shadows. Tina likes to focus on the eyes and bring out the unique beauty of every woman. When doing skin, she believes less is more, and prefers to put her clients on a skin-care regime so that less foundation is needed. She loves to define eyes using a variety of natural pencils and working them in with her fingertips. She avoids harsh lines and prefers a more diffused look. She loves to give cheeks a bright pop of color and uses a small brush to apply powder sparingly.

HOW-TO TIP! BOUNCY BLOWOUTS! As seen in many of the notorious fashion house collections this year, bombshell blowouts have resurfaced once again. Here are a few hot new tips to revamp your bouncy locks.
1. Towel-dry your hair and apply a root lifter to amplify the lift on your roots. Try adding a quarter-size drop of Redken Velvet Gelatine 07 and finger-comb into roots. 2. Subsection your hair and direct sections upward, using a large round brush. 3. Let sections cool in large rollers to ensure a lasting hold. 4. Part your hair as you like, and finish the look with your favorite shine serum.
Do you have a set of clip-in extensions that you never use? Try bringing them to the salon the next time you do your color and ask your stylist to dye and cut them to your current look. It could be just the pick-me-up you need! Shop hairpiece.com for amazing easy-to-use clip-in extensions for length, fullness, or thinning areas! Tired of your normal hair routine? Maybe it’s time to clean out your bathroom drawer and retrieve all those half-used bottles of products you’ve splurged on over the years. Here are some tips when digging deep into your drawers:
1. It’s important to keep track of how old your hair products are because some actually have an expiration date! Bacteria can grow in old products and transfer onto your hair! Gross! 2. If you’re one of those women who just have to try everything but never finish anything, try cocktailing random products together to create your own concoctions! Serums work great with mousses; smoothing creams can easily be combined with leave-in conditioners…the possibilities are endless! Try combining Bumble and bumble Grooming Creme and Bed Head Leave-In Conditioner for the ultimate vhealing styling creme!

HOME SUITE HOME
When news hit that The Peninsula Beverly Hills was about to renovate its 193 guest rooms, suites and villas, we all wondered the same thing: W hy? Why would such a beautiful hotel need to update so much as a switch plate? That is, until its sparkling results were unveiled. Take the stunning 1,500-square-foot garden-facing Grand Deluxe Suite designed by Nancy Corzine for example. It’s furnished in an ice-blue palette accented with Venetian silver, cream and white. “The Peninsula Beverly Hills is my favorite hotel in Los Angeles, where I always suggest that my out-of-town guests stay,” says Corzine. Not to alienate their existing clientele, some aesthetic considerations were made. “When planning the enhancement, we kept in mind our loyal guests—more than seventy percent of those who stay with us are repeat customers,” says managing director Offer Nissenbaum. “They implored us not to change what they love about The Peninsula—its classic elegance and intimate comfort in a setting evocative of a glamorous Beverly Hills estate.” The Peninsula Beverly Hills , 9882 South Santa Monica Boulevard, Beverly Hills 90212, 310-551-2888

New and Improved: Ojai Valley Inn & Spa glows brightly after $90-million renovation
Enter through the gates of the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa along the picturesque giant Eucalyptus tree-lined road, and the resort’s luscious scents and tranquil energy envelop you. Since 1923, the five-diamond resort on 220 rolling acres has welcomed guests to its scenic surroundings that include a classic George C. Thomas golf course and the most delightful spa this side of paradise. The property’s recently completed $90-million renovation and expansion makes this a truly unique California destination. The award-winning 31,000-square-foot luxury spa has 28 treatment rooms. Here you will find a knowledgeable staff to guide you through the list of highly original treatments. Try the very refreshing Pixie Body Scrub where the massage therapist extracts the juice of a half-dozen Ojai Pixie tangerines and incorporates this elixir into the scrub. After 50 minutes of bliss, your skin is super-hydrated and glowing! Throughout the spa, women are milling about comfortably in their robes…sampling the nice selection of herbal teas, reading, or just dozing in the comfortable lounge area. In this welcoming atmosphere you’ll find massage rooms with fireplaces, whirlpools, steam rooms, saunas and sunbathing loggias for men and women. There are many activities to keep you busy throughout your stay. Visit Spa Ojai’s charming Artist’s Cottage and Apothecary located under a centuries-old oak tree. Choose from a wide array of classes in mixed media, from painting on glass to silverpoint drawing and silk scarf painting—all taught by local artists. The Apothecary is also a perfect setting for creating your own personal scent of essential oils that bears your name—a lovely souvenir to take home. There are golf and tennis lessons available, and personal training sessions at Spa Ojai’s well-equipped gym. The daily schedule of complimentary mind/body classes, including t’ai chi, yoga, qi gong and meditation, fill up fast with eager participants, as do the very enjoyable power walks and nature hikes! On the property are four wonderful restaurants, and their team of culinary experts all work closely with the local farmer’s markets to offer up the most enticing organic fare. The Oak Grill serves lunch and dinner outside on a lovely terrace overlooking the golf course or inside by the fireplace. With its cozy, chic clubhouse atmosphere,
you’re invited to linger over the chef ’s specially prepared dishes and desserts. My favorite: the Lavender cheesecake, infused with herbs from their own hillside gardens. The Inn also provides bicycle rentals at $25 dollars for the day. It’s an easy ride into the historic town of Ojai. Here you can visit the many charming art galleries and shops along Ojai Ave. Stop in and see the Trowbridge Gallery, which deals exclusively in original and fine art with a local feel. Down the street is the Feast Bistro for an afternoon tea or espresso and assortment of homemade baked goods— before heading back to your room in paradise. Room rates are $400–$600. Suites range from $700 to $6,000. Ojai Valley Inn & Spa, 905 C Count C lub Road, ou ntrr y Club Ojai, C A 93023. 805- 646-1111 , ojairesort.c om

YOUR PRIVATE ISLAND One of the most exclusive getaways rests in the South Pacific. Named Turtle Island, it is Fiji’s only truly all-inclusive resort. Did we mention The Blue Lagoon was filmed here? Blue Lagoon: The film starring Brooke Shields was shot right here
Tropical Luxury: Elegantly appointed suites have all the modern amenities
Private Oasis: Your very own secluded beach
L
ocated in the Yasawa Island group on Fiji’s northwestern side, privately owned Turtle Island is five hundred acres of lush tropical rain forest on the edge of Blue Lagoon, surrounded by rich, vibrant coral reefs and powdery white sand beaches. Fiji’s culture flourishes on Turtle Island, where bula (the local greeting) is heard from every staff member, underscoring their reputation for being the ‘friendliest people on Earth.’ Turtle Island is Fiji’s only truly all-inclusive resort; absolutely everything is included. Your home on Turtle Island is one of only fourteen private burés (villas), situated near the shore of the tranquil waters of Blue Lagoon. Every buré has a king-size four-poster bed, a sitting room, and a walk-in double shower. All burés include a refrigerator fully stocked with wine, Champagne, and beverages of your choice. For napping, each buré has a queen-size daybed on its veranda. For those romantic evenings, all grand burés have full-sized in-room Jacuzzi tubs. Perhaps it’s the Island’s perfect blend of luxury and privacy that has attracted so many celebrities—Charlize Theron, Jessica Simpson, Dennis Quaid, Britney Spears, Ringo Starr, and Rob Lowe among them. The Island has fourteen white-sand beaches, so each couple has their own beach during their stay. Some are adjacent to the living and dining areas; others are totally isolated, surrounded by high cliffs or set within a cove. Couples can reserve their own private beach for the day and enjoy a romantic picnic lunch of lobster and French Champagne. Your time on Turtle Island is your own. Stroll the beaches, wade in the warm turquoise waters, cruise on a sailboat, go kayaking, or master the paddleboard. Take a horseback ride on the beach, and watch the sunrise over a Champagne breakfast. Enjoy a mountain-bike ride, or take a hike through the lush tropical forest. Enjoy a private gourmet dinner on the floating pontoon dock on a star-studded night, as the breeze

carries the scent of frangipani to the water’s edge and the waves turn green-gold with bioluminescence. For snorkeling or scuba diving, Blue Lagoon is as clear as new-blown glass and offers spectacular underwater displays. Living coral reefs of blue, green, and yellow, called ‘fringing reefs,’ ring the island and are home to colorful galaxies of fish, from lion to angel to butterfly fish. Put on your gear and go eye-to-eye with a green or hawksbill turtle. “My original objective in life,” says Turtle Island founder Richard Evanson, “was to get a good education and make some money so that I could be independent.” After graduating from the University of Washington with an engineering degree, he earned his MBA at Harvard and went on to build a cable television empire that he sold to CBS. In 1973, Turtle Island was an uninhabited 500-acre island destroyed by goats. Even so, it captured the heart of the American millionaire. “I bought the island because I was searching for a different kind of fulfillment,” he explains. “I wanted to put some meaning back in my life.” Evanson went from living in luxury to building a rustic hut and having no running water or electricity. The evolution of the one-man island into the number one honeymoon destination in the world happened with the help of Hollywood. Columbia Pictures discovered Evanson’s private paradise on a scouting trip in 1979. It was the ideal setting for the Oscar-nominated film The Blue Lagoon, starring Brooke Shields. Evanson welcomed the cast and crew, and built them cottages for their time on the island. After filming was completed, and the crew departed, Evanson transformed the empty cottages into elegant guest suites. Evanson’s created a successful tourism model which benefits the environments and the people of isolated destinations, while pampering guests in five-star surroundings and enriching their life experience. turtlefiji.com G

NEW YORK STATE OF MIND STEPHEN CHRISTOPHER travels to the city that never sleeps, and finds two luxury boutique hotels to do just that. GILDED CAGE
“It was a Holiday Inn,” Jim Walrod, the Gild Hall hotel designer, deadpans, adding, “No one ever, ever, ever figures that one out.” White Glove Service: The Chatwal serves up elegance from the moment you drive up GLORY DAYS
It’s mind-boggling that there are over 70,000 hotel rooms in New York City. We found 76 of the nicest
at The Chatwal , the luxury boutique hotel that marks a return to the elegant glamour of the early 20th Century. Master architect and interior designer Thierry W. Despont has meticulously restored each room to its former glory. And he’s had some experience. His previous projects include the J. Paul Getty Museum and the centennial restoration of the Statue of Liberty. Despont has stayed true to the building’s theatrical and historical origins. A striking floor-to-ceiling 18th-century stone fireplace acts as centerpiece for the hotel’s restaurant, The Lambs Club. The façade of the building also looks as it did originally—complete with marble ram heads and a marble plaque alluding to the glory days of The Lambs Club. The exquisitely appointed guest rooms feature Frette linens, bespoke Krigler candles, custom Asprey toiletries, Kashwére ultra-plush robes, huge televisions, and your choice of raindrop shower or Jacuzzi bath. The rooms follow Despont’s conceptual aesthetic: New York–style Art Deco meets the glamour of travel (when men and women would dress up to take a train). Each room features built-in cabinets wrapped in faux leather, designed to resemble beautiful pieces of designer luggage. The walls are upholstered in luxurious ultrasuede fabric, creating a sumptuous visual. All the hotel baths are clad in bands of tinted mirror, providing a unique and unexpected experience for guests. ometimes you’ve got to have your own Eat, Pray, Love moments. It’s my first evening on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands (paradise!), and I’m writing this beneath cozy bed sheets. However, my journey began six days ago, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. My friend Carola—a native of this colorful commonwealth—scooped me from the airport and we ventured to Old San Juan. We strolled on foot through the inky-colored cobblestone streets. Founded by Ponce de León in 1508 and once a Spanish colony, the historic town is surrounded by stone walls and fortresses. Atop the San Cristobal Fort, views of the city, the Atlantic, and surrounding mountains enchant. Vibrant Spanish colonial buildings in shades of lime, lavender and tangerine flirt with visitors and line narrow streets. Artisanal shops, cafés and bookstores nest inside. Bushy-tailed, the next morning we hopped aboard Air Flamenco’s six-seater aircraft and headed to Isla de Vieques— just off the coast of Puerto Rico, but far from the hustle and bustle. Thirty minutes later, sweaty-handed, we landed and headed to W Vieques Retreat and Spa. In Carola’s words, “This might be the most beautiful resort I’ve been to.” Perched on pristine coastline, with two private beaches, the property was designed by award-winning Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola (I’m a huge fan) and features colorful artwork and furniture, cathedral-like ceilings, and an enviable marriage of earth, metal, ocean and sky. While the vibe is lively, and Sunset Sip in the evening brings guests together over cocktails, the sensibility is romantic. You won’t find a party by the pool, but you will find a menu of sumptuous snacks, chic drinks, and lots of options to sample locally crafted Puerto Rican rums. Quietly indulgent, the grounds are speckled with shaded hammocks, and 156 rooms (more than two dozen ocean-view suites) offer instant serenity. At night, shore waves and coqui frogs sing guests to sleep. Day one, we reclined on white coral sand at W beach, where activities and amenities abound, including kayaks, snorkeling sets, and seaside concierge. That night, under cover

The microscopic marine algae explodes with fluorescent light when disturbed. It’s miraculous and straight out of the movie Avatar! The next day, Erick took us on a mini triathlon, where we footed around the island, paddle-boarded, and cruised in our rented Wrangler. Since the 1940s, the U.S. Navy had used Vieques as a firing range, but withdrew in May of 2003. The ironic result? A virtually undeveloped treasure. We boarded through Mosquito Bay, toured Red Mangrove forests, and bathed in secluded nameless bays. “How do you like my office?” asked Erick. We finished the day on Caracas Beach, a quiet stretch of sand, and shopped in town at Funky Beehive boutique, resplendent with islandy can’t-live-withouts. Nothing like an exotic trek to work up an appetite and sore muscles! The W Spa is elegant and reposeful. Private rooms with showers and sliding doors open onto a garden courtyard sprinkled with tropical orchids, cascading trumpet vines and an ocean view. A retreat within the retreat, guests sit, read, and relax in a modern Eden. From there, we hit up miX, the restaurant on property and one of (if not the) best culinary experiences on Vieques. Chef and mastermind Alain Ducasse has designed a menu with native roots and French flair. We devoured the paella, bursting with locally caught lobster and savory sea fare, and lingered for hours, sipping, nibbling, and admiring the moonlit sea. Departure day, I tiptoed to W’s ‘European-style’ Whisper Beach, and in my birthday suit jumped in for a Viequensian baptism! Before the mother/daughter crack-of-dawn reef explorers could catch my x-rated romp, I saronged and said my farewells. My journey continued to El Yunque rainforest in Puerto Rico for a Paradise Wellness retreat, and now to St. John. But if I do decide to drop everything, post-up beside Caribbean waters, and become a hotshot bartender à la Tom Cruise in Cocktail (being considered), Vieques is just a hop, skip and small-plane flight away. ugging the tropical cliffs along the Riviera Nayarit—Mexico’s Gold Coast, just 45 minutes from the Puerto Vallarta airport, is a magical Eden nestled between the Sierra de Vallejo National Reserve and Banderas Bay. The Imanta Resort dances on the edge of the mighty Pacific. Tucked within this enchanting 250-acre setting is a mystical refuge that is a true gift to those who have grown weary of the one-size-fitsall sprawl of the world’s mega-resorts. Astoundingly, at full capacity the Imanta Resort accommodates fewer than two dozen guests. Inspired by a trip to Thailand, the hoteliers imagined a private sanctuary that would seamlessly blend luxury with sustainability. The result: a first-class, environmentally conscious boutique hotel and spa that is nothing short of supernatural. It begins with the perfect location, carefully chosen for its privacy and undisturbed natural beauty. The air itself is wildly intoxicating. A warm breeze carries the rich scents of almond, mango, and tamarind, gently calming the spirit. Vibrant sounds from the jungle entice one toward exploration and adventure, while the crystalline water beckons for play and pondering. Sitting 21 degrees north of the equatorial plane, the Imanta Resort shares a kinship with other healing environs like Maui and the Bahamas. The atmosphere can make you feel like you’re being kissed by the gods. The Earth’s most noble creatures have long known the secrets of these shores. For hundreds of years, whales have found solace and safety in the waters of this bay, migrating from colder climes to give birth to their young and prepare them for the long journey back. It makes me smile thinking of my family’s own rewarding trips to this paradise. Perhaps my children are experiencing the same essence of growth and strength from the region.

THE GATES OF HEAVEN: IMANTA RESORT In Spanish, imanta means ‘magnetic attraction.’ In Mexico, as our CHERYL WOODCOCK finds, the Imanta Punta de Mita Resort translates to pure bliss.

Complementing the exquisite locale, the resort’s secret ingredient is its profound respect for the soul—that of the land and that of the fortunate visitor. The property celebrates the terrain’s organic hues and contours with a romantic cluster of shelters lovingly crafted from sustainable material. The Imanta Resort makes mind, body, and spiritual renewal a priority for all its guests. “Harmony meets luxury” best describes the spacious suites. Guests revel in magnificent views of the ocean, mountains, and jungle. Although you might be tempted to stay in your suite, so much more awaits outside. Visitors are nourished by fare that includes fresh local seafood, exotic indigenous fruits, and savory premium meats, all prepared to exacting standards. Rejuvenation can be found by participating in a mindboggling range of activities including hiking, yoga, meditation, and fishing. A personal favorite is surfing. The surfing in Mexico is truly amazing and super-spiritual. Our Mayan surf guide, Black Bear (Oso Negro), knows all the prime spots, the most amazing of which is “The Gates of Heaven.” I find the name appropriate for two reasons. Yes, it’s where you can catch the perfect wave. But if you listen closely, you will also hear the sweet siren’s song of the Imanta Resort calling you home.

Genlux Out-of-Towner
Seriously sexy and fiercely feminine—it’s the calling card of any lavish lingerie. But when combined with sophistication and wit, you get the sensual mastery of Agent Provocateur. As an avid fan of lacy, frilly unmentionables, I instantly fell in love with their flirty color schemes and enchanting shapes and contours. It’s easy to see how their forward-thinking designs aim to transform the way women (and men) think about intimates. In March 2010, Sarah Shotton took the reigns as creative director of Agent Provocateur. With over a decade of experience in the business she has become an essential influence in the brand’s evolution and success. Her work has pushed the boundaries of frill and function, creating dramatic silhouettes that both embellish and empower a woman’s body. A native of County Durham, in North East England, Sarah developed a love of fashion and classic beauty at an early age. She studied fashion at Central Saint Martins College in London, and in 1999 began her apprenticeship at Agent Provocateur under the guidance of founders Joe Corre and Serena Rees. She has since developed numerous collections, including the luxuriously naughty Fifi and Nikita lines. And her work has been flaunted by Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue, and countless other celebrity clients. Sarah Shotton knows how to perfectly blend chic with cheeky—so girls, guys, eat your hearts out.—By Courtney Fortune
