STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE
For better or worse, the AI train has arrived, and we’ve jumped on board. Our cover girl, AILEEN , was created entirely by artificial intelligence. No one, including myself, had much to do with her existence. I keyed in a few words on my computer, and voila! Less than a minute later—like magic—AI presented this stunning image. The girl’s intense look with her half-cast eyes and ‘don’t fuck with me’ attitude? All AI. The sleek one-shoulder turtleneck? All AI. The perfect hair, Anastasia-styled brows, and rich background color? All AI. Yes, it’s a beautiful cover image, but the decision to print it wasn’t so easy.
Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI, the startup that developed ChatGPT, has been warning about an unfettered AI (yes, there’s some irony there). Besides those bad actors who use AI to spread misinformation to erode democracies, destroy reputations, or offer dangerous medical advice about pandemics, there will come a day when AI’s super intelligence will be ten times greater than our own when its view of us will be analogous to ours of lowly ants invading the kitchen cabinet. Like us, they may casually reach for the Raid.
Closer to home, when considering this AI-generated cover, I pondered whether this new digital species might eventually replace our models, photographers, stylists, makeup artists, art directors, and hairdressers who would be subjugated to the sidelines, like the checkout clerks at Ralph’s.
Photographer rep Timothy Priano must have been in my head when he proposed a softer landing on planet AI. His idea was to mix parts of AI-generated back-
grounds with real-world photographs of jewelry and then bake them together in Photoshop. The no-humans-were-canceled results by James T. Murray and stylist Yuco Lacovara are a perfect portmanteau of AI and human ingenuity (p108).
Do I foresee AI enhancing the GENLUX aesthetic in the future? Probably. But to my upbeat, fun, weird, quirky, and collaborative tribe, whom I’ve worked with for 18 years, I vow to preserve the sacrosanctity of our creative sphere and never again place an AI-generated ‘person’ on the cover. There, I said it.
For now, as we happily (perhaps blindly) go about our innocuous use of AI to create pretty pictures, we might also consider placing regulatory guardrails against its existential risks to humanity— sooner rather than later. Though, many argue that that train has already left the station.

RIZZOLI PUBLISHES A PAIR OF COOL NEW FASHION ILLUSTRATION TOMES
—STEPHEN KAMIFUJI
Should one be ballsy enough to rip apart François Berthoud’s new book of illustrations to wallpaper the bedroom, you’d have about the greatest room ever. Each page is a masterpiece and smells of a collab with a luxury fashion brand coming soon to Rodeo Drive (watch out, Yayoi). Alternatively, this showcase of thirty years of Berthoud’s work will look nice stacked on your other giant slipcover books. François Berthoud: Fashion, Fetish and Fantasy, $195, rizzoliusa.com
Over her 70+ year fashion journalism career, Marylou Luther has interviewed every designer since Christian Dior. In Be-Spoke, she’s paired her favorite designer quips and quotes from Coco Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, Virgil Abloh, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Rei Kawakubo, Miuccia Prada, Thom Browne, and others, with the colorful and whimsical artistry of Cuban-born fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo. Be-Spoke, by Marylou Luther, $57.50, rizzoliusa.com

Making Scents
ATTENTION DEAR STRESSED-OUT SOULS: TINY BANDIT WILL HELP ROB YOU OF YOUR TENSION AND ANXIETY .
—STEPHEN KAMIFUJI
From her Venice hybrid boutique-studio-factory, Heather Beaudoin and her trusty sidekick, Kianna Koprowski, are busy handcrafting their Tiny Bandit candles using a 100% natural coconut wax blend, lead-free braided cotton wicks, and perfume oil.
“Every item we make is organically one-of-a-kind and full of energy and beauty,” says Heather, holding a Moon Milk-scented candle (her best seller). The sexy beachy scent—like all her fragrances—comes in candles (some with crystals), a room spray, a diffuser, a body spray, cuticle oil, and crystal ritual oil. Soon, Heather hopes to add lotions to the mix.
Aside from the fragrance sets, you’ll also find beautiful baskets, indigo textiles, sea glass from Africa, and loads of crystals from Morocco. There are utensils, jewelry, tea towels, books, rings, and cute carved crystal mushrooms. “We sell a lot of things in the shape of mushrooms—they’re definitely having their moment,” Heather injects with a nod and a wink.
A breast cancer survivor, Heather was diagnosed at only 29. “I was one of the youngest, so Cedars Sinai worked diligently on a chemo-cocktail to keep me from going into menopause,” she says, adding, “So giving back is very important to me.” Currently, her Sea Elixir candle benefits the Surfrider Foundation, and in October, during breast cancer awareness month, proceeds from one of the Tiny Bandit candles will help the Young Survival Coalition.
Heather is not at all surprised by having manifested her success: “Since I was young, I always knew I’d figure out how to use my creativity to pay the bills and satisfy my spirit—it’s cool that it’s come to fruition.”
You’ll find Tiny Bandit products at The Beverly Hills Hotel, The Butcher’s Daughter, and Burke Decor, or by visiting the Tiny Bandit boutique and studio, 350 Sunset Ave., Suite 2, Venice, California 90291, 213-422-6934, tinybandit.com

ACTRESS SAMANTHA LOCKWOOD’S INGENIUS MINI-VASE
JEWELRY KEEPS FLOWERS FRESH ALL DAY.
—STEPHEN KAMIFUJI
Inspired by her grandmother Betty, who once suggested wearing flowers brings good luck and spreads nature’s positive energy, Samantha Lockwood designed these exquisite mini-vase pendants and earrings that cleverly hold a pinch of water—enough to keep a small flower or tiny bouquet fresh all day. Elegantly sculpted in the form of a woman, they come in two pendant sizes, earrings and hair pins. They are available in polished stainless steel, yellow gold, pink gold, brushed pink gold, and brushed black. Large gold pendant on a 36-inch chain, $115, fleurings.com

You’re wearing? A tan vintage Valentino suit with cropped pants, a Valentino leather belt, and Bottega Veneta wedge pumps. Lately, I’ve been dressing more simply—adding accessories to make it pop!
Your breakfast? Every morning, I have a concoction of fresh ginger mixed with hot water, apple cider vinegar, and turmeric for overall health and a glow. Turmeric is excellent for inflammation and resetting the body first thing in the morning. I also make fresh green juice five days a week—my main beauty hack.
Handbag contents? Cell phone, car keys, CHANEL wallet, two lip glosses from Hourglass. I love their names, ‘Influencer’ and ‘Achiever.’ Charlotte Tilbury ‘Pillow Talk’ lip liner, Altoid mints, and chapstick from dentist, Dr. Dorfman.
Early years? I was born in Tokyo, Japan, where my family lived for quite a while. My middle name is Mariko. I’ve been back several times. I love Japan. It’s so inspiring, and I feel connected with their culture and décor. My father was a civil engineer in the Air Force. We moved to California and then Arizona, where my parents still live.
Childhood bullying? Kids bullied me for being too skinny. Even when I moved to LA to model, I had to gain weight because I was too thin. I think I got lucky there.
College life? I finished high school early and graduated from the University of Arizona at Tucson. I studied media arts and marketing and initially looked to be in medicine.
Modeling career? At 14, I came in second during a Cosmopolitan Model Search. From 5000, they whittled it down to five of us who got to go to New York and shoot with Patrick Demarchelier. I appeared on Oprah and the Today Show and wanted to make modeling my career, but my parents insisted I finish college first. After college, I moved to LA and signed with LA Models.
Acting start? Back in the day, my actress girlfriend went to audition for a new show and got a callback. She overheard they were looking for a beautiful black girl who was a model and could act. She said, ‘Come with me to the audition.’ I went and sat in the lobby, and the casting director came out, and asked if I’d auditioned yet. I said, oh, no, I’m just waiting for my friend. So she said you should audition and handed me a script to memorize. I landed the role as a series regular on Desire, a 52-episode show.
Pandemic years? A friend of mine encouraged me with some great advice. He said, ‘Tanisha, while everybody is just sitting around, take this opportunity to prepare, so when auditions start up again, you’ll be ahead of the game.’ I took new headshots, he helped make three reels, and we built a website.
Beauty secret? Eye cream. The one thing I always put on in the morning and the evening. I change up my brands every six months.
Success advice? Put a vision board together and be very specific. Put in the work and take steps to manifest your goal. Med-
itate on it. I envisioned booking a series-regular role on a major network in a position of authority, like a doctor or a lawyer. I auditioned to play a lawyer on General Hospital on ABC. They said it was for a lawyer, but it was actually for the police commissioner. I’m in my first year of my three-year contract.
Binge-watching? White Lotus—everybody watches that. I have many: YOU, Shrinking, Mosquito Coast, and Echo Three on Apple.
Guilty pleasure? Dateline on NBC before I go to bed. You are...? I’m fun, loyal, positive, and encouraging. We all need people around to champion and motivate us. I often retreated and needed to be more confident because many people said I could never achieve certain things, which I thankfully achieved. It just takes one person to believe in you and keep that positivity going. So I try to be that for my friends.
Spiritual path? I grew up attending church and my mother always wanted me to have faith. I grappled with what I believed in and tested many things before realizing that I’m a spiritual being and all about positive energy.
Your superpower? I’m a huge manifester.
Three blessings? My extraordinary, generous, and supportive family. My friends who I’ve had for 20-30 years. And my career.
Best advice? My mom told me always to be grateful. My parents instilled in me the importance of being humble and respectful.
Friend group? My best friends are essential. One’s in PR, one is a writer, and another is an actor. We get together once a month at Pace in Laurel Canyon. My one friend, who used to scour the couch for drinks money, is now super successful. I love that we’ve all grown up and supported each other.
Your heroes? My mother. She’s inspiring. A businesswoman and philanthropist. Strong-willed and determined. I’m blessed to have a lot of her qualities.
Rebellious years? Mom kept things in line. I once told her to shut up. You don’t say that to a black mother; she just gave a look that said, you better not say that again. Believe me, I never did.
Philanthropic work? My mother had cancer, so it’s an important cause for me. I support Living Beauty, and today I attended their Stella McCartney event at the Simon House. I work with organizations at home in Arizona and on a mentorship program for historically black colleges and universities in Chicago.
Biggest regret? Early on, I listened to other people’s opinions and didn’t trust my own. I let outside noise dictate my energy, beliefs, and my future. That said, I don’t regret things too much because I believe in all things as learning experiences. Boyfriends? Let’s just say I’m dating.
Any pets? Cosette—she’s French—part pitbull and part Weimaraner. All she wants to do is snuggle and be loved.

GENLUX INTERVIEW
TANISHA HARPER
“We all need people around to champion and motivate us. It just takes one person to believe in you and keep that positivity going. So I try to be that for my friends.”
Your passion? Home design, architecture, and furniture. Since my 20s, I’ve gone to estate sales and collected Charles Eames and other mid-century and art deco designer pieces. Designers would come and buy from me. I started going into interior design during the pandemic and designed three homes. It comes naturally and easily. Next week I’m going to jewelry shopping in Paris, and I’m constantly on 1st Dibs [1stdibs.com]. That’s all I do.
Vintage retailers? My favorites are Pop-up Home off Western. The owner, Trisha Benitez, gets excellent pieces. There’s THE DEN [shopden-la.com] over on Fountain in East Hollywood, and another is Nickey Kehoe on Beverly Blvd. For vintage jewelry, I go to Carney Couture [carney couture.com]. You’ll find her at Pickwick downtown at the Row— this cool downtown area with arcade shops that carry luxury vintage [pickwickvintage.com]. It’s a gathering of vintage dealers once a month on a Saturday.

Ihave been smiling all day because of the ‘kindness of strangers.’ One lovely person sent me a photograph of my grandmother, Valda Foreman, whom I had never met. By the age of 23, she had three children, ran away from home, and never saw them again. In the 1930s, this was shocking, though Valda clearly had post-natal depression. Sadly, she was persona non grata at our home. In this photo, she looked like a fashionable, radiant bride with a Gatsby look.
Last week, I returned to London after a whirlwind red-carpet tour of rain-soaked Los Angeles. At the Oscars, the best dressed were Cara Delevigne and Florence Pugh. I attended boarding school with Cara’s mother, Pandora, who saved me from being bullied. Pandora may not remember, but I do—like it was yesterday. Cara was stunning in Ellie Saab and, of course, as a top model, has the unfair advantage of height and beauty over all others—she killed it. Florence Pugh, dressed in black shorts under a Valentino opera coat by Valentino, was modern and glamorous. These were the only ones who stood out—the rest looked like they should be on a beach. Far too much tummy and legs for my taste. Call me old-fashioned; I like a body covered up.
I bounced from place to place this time. I spent a few nights in the Portuguese Palace of my friend Mara Granderson, a few at the Prospect (gorgeously decorated by Martyn Lawrence Bullard), and my last night at The Chateau.
I visited designer Sue Wong’s house in Los Feliz, which she turned into a Moroccan Palace. Tamie Adaya had a welcoming party for me at her Hotel Shangri-La in Santa Monica, and Nigel Daly and Wes Carrol hosted a very generous dinner for me at Soho House. I was a very lucky girl.
Next year, God, please give us good weather so that LA will shine again. G

ALL CHOKED UP!
To know me.... is to love me... I mean, to know that I LOVE a great choker! Unfortunately, years ago, I had a nasty burn on my neck, and chokers have been a saving grace for hiding my scar (that I am very selfconscious of). Well, thank my lucky stars that S/S '23 finds chokers one of the 'IT' accessories and I absolutely love this crystal mesh choker with a crystal-embellished cross from the Kim Kardashian for the Dolce&Gabbana collection. So elegant with a serious edge! $1945, dolcegabbana.com

Welcome to the Gate of Well-Being
When you think of self-care, what comes to mind? It could be as simple as enjoying a nightly cup of hot tea,
hiking in some beautiful scenery, or indulging in a nourishing sheet mask. As a skincare and beauty aficionado, I make sure to carve out time for extra pampering. Here’s how:
PRIORITIZE R&R
That’s right! Prioritize your wellbeing by focusing on some R&R (rest and relaxation). Numerous studies have shown that a night of restful quality sleep has incredible healing effects on our body, mind, and, let’s not forget, our skin!
My essential is a sleep mask for the eyes to provide a soothing effect by blocking out artificial light. The dark environment increases melatonin levels, which is crucial for our restorative sleep giving us the restful appearance
SENSE OF SPA AT HOME
Create a sense of spa with a good cleansing balm with exceptionally silky texture and skin-loving ingredients. When evening comes, light your favorite candle in the bathroom, warm a pea-sized amount of the balm between your palms, and start your cleansing ritual. It cleanses thoroughly, dissolving makeup and impurities, plus it feels like getting a facial every time you use it.
Ninka B. recommends: Elemis Pro-Collagen Rose Cleansing Balm, $66, elemis.com
REVEAL YOUR TRUE RADIANCE
Regular exfoliation is crucial for a healthy and youthful complexion. It will improve texture, pore size, prevent breakouts, and brighten pigmentation. In addition, the serums and creams you apply afterward will absorb exceptionally better and become more effective. Sircuit Skin Sir Activ™+ scrub is a must-have with its rejuvenating antioxidant and zeolite ingredients. A powerfully detoxifying and instantly glow-inducing scrub. Ninka B. recommends: Sircuit Skin SIR ACTIV+ | zeolite invigorating scrub, $48, sircuitskin.com
in the morning. It only takes a few minutes and makes a significant difference to its appearance. Use the Caudalie Vinosculpt Crushed Cabernet Scrub in the shower, then lock in the hydration with Caudalie Vinosculpt Lift & Firm Body Cream Moisturizer. These specialized products will keep your body’s skin looking and feeling its best. The sooner we adapt these habits, the more confident and beautiful we will feel!
Ninka B. recommends: Caudalie Vinosculpt Lift & Firm Body Cream Moisturizer $45; Caudalie Vinosculpt Crushed Cabernet Scrub, $40, caudalie.com
Spring beauty page inspires you to take extra time and prioritize your well-being. Let today be the beginning gateway for celebrating you! Best wishes from your aesthetician advisor, Ninka B @ninkabskin

Be in Tune with the Moon
I’m
By Kelly Emberg - The Model Gardener
Don’t worry, gardening by the Moon doesn’t mean you need to start at dusk (even though some diehard gardeners do). The Moon’s phases signal what to plant and when , and following its cues will bring you closer to nature’s patterns and your garden’s success.
For thousands of years, civilizations gardened by the Moon. Some scientists might balk at this theory, but the proof is in the harvest. Ask any lunar gardener!
HOW IT WORKS
The Moon revolves around Earth every 28 days equalling four quarters—each lasting seven days. The first two quarters are the “waxing stage,” when the Moon is dark, and the light becomes increasingly visible until the Moon is full. The last two quarters considered the “waning stage,” are when the full Moon’s light decreases until there isn’t any light—this is called the New Moon. Then, the cycle starts all over again.
The Moon’s gravitational influence affects the rise and fall of the tides as well as the soil moisture and a plant’s sap. This extra moisture encourages seeds to swell, burst, and sprout.
The best time to plant annuals that bear their fruit above ground is during the waxing stage, when the increased moonlight stimulates the plant’s growth.
The best time to plant your root crops and bulbs are during the third and fourth quarters when the full Moon’s light wanes. Energy goes to the plant’s roots, and the Earth’s gravitational pull draws the moisture and the plant’s roots down. The growth of the leaves slows.
There are times when you shouldn’t plant at all. Never during the full and new Moon;
they are considered “barren” signs. Avoid planting days of the first- and third-quarter.
WAXING MOON
Pick fruits and vegetables that you intend to eat right away. The water content of the ingredients is higher, so salads are crunchier during the waxing Moon.
During the first quarter: from the new to the half-full Moon, plant above-ground annuals—particularly leafy plants that produce their seed outside the fruit. Examples: asparagus, cabbage, celery, and spinach.
ABOVE GROUND.
When is the Next Super Blue Moon? Aug. 31.
WANING MOON
During the entire waning phase: sow root vegetables. Examples: beets, radishes, carrots, potatoes, onions, and turnips.
During the second quarter: from the halffull Moon to the full Moon, plant annuals that grow above-ground, vine, and plants that produce seeds inside the fruit. Examples: beans, peas, peppers, squash, eggplant, tomatoes, and cucumbers.
During the third quarter: from the full to half-full Moon, plant bulb and root crops, and any crops planted in one season to winter over and produce yields the following year. Examples: onions, potatoes, rhubarb, grapes, and berries.
During the first or second quarter: plant garlic, melons, hay, grains, and cereals.
TIP: During periods of drought, sow seeds when the Moon is waxing, as close to the full Moon as possible.
During the fourth quarter: from half-full to new Moon, complete garden chores. Cultivate, pull weeds, and destroy pests. TIP: During the dark of the Moon, plants should rest—also it’s a good time to kill weeds because they won’t grow back.
Once you see how the Moon’s magnetic energy works miracles, you will be a believer! This spring, I will be getting in tune with the Moon!
Won’t you join me?

Yes, I love my faraway places, but sometimes I slip away to the Fairmont Century Plaza hotel—my perfect in-town-weekend-spa getaway to lift my spirits, rejuvenate my soul, and, best of all, shed a few visible years.
MUST SPA:
The other-worldly, 14,000-square-foot Fairmont Spa Century Plaza is aesthetically breathtaking with a fully-equipped Technogym and a roo op pool with great city views. The best-in-class amenities include a Himalayan salt room and an aromatherapy steam room. If anti-aging is your goal (and whose isn’t), the spa o ers the talents of British skincare specialist Dr. Rita Rakus and her award-winning nonsurgical cosmetic treatments. Try her Red-Carpet Radiance Facial, which includes the exclusive HydraFacial technique. When you need maximum results in minimal time, go for The Avenue Of The Stars “Super Power” 75-minute facial. A erward, calm your system and allow for restoration and healing during the soothing 60- or 90-minute Relaxation Massage. fairmontcenturyplaza.com
MUST STAY:
Lumière, a Frenchinfluence restaurant, weighs in like your typical Parisian brasserie. In the morning, I pick up mon petit croissant and a takeaway co ee and head straight up to the roo op pool. The dinner menu selection goes from seared sea bass, braised short ribs, or steak tartare—all the way to a decadent 24 oz herbroasted Chateau Briand, carved tableside, of course. lumierebrasserie.com
MUST DINE:
A er a long day of pampering at the spa, I slept like a baby in one of the spacious (up to 1945 square feet) suites located on the 9th, 10th, and 11th floors of the Fairmont Century Plaza. The iconic (there’s a lot of history here) 400-room hotel is located across from Westfield Century City mall and o ers views all the way to the Pacific Ocean. fairmontcenturyplaza.com
