20 GENLUX SPRING/SUMMER 2022
O THEHOF F BRA N D.CO M
STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE Beverly Johnson was the first supermodel I ever met. It was 1988, and I’d started my own design business in a swanky new building in Universal City. Beverly was visiting the office next door and somehow—lucky for me—was encouraged to drop by mine. We became friends right off the bat, and she let me tag along to many memorable dinners and parties on both coasts. We’ve remained friends ever since. About ten years ago, Beverly introduced me to her supermodel-turned-gardener friend, Kelly Emberg, who, fast forward to today, is our GENLUX garden editor. Both Beverly and Kelly rose to stardom primarily because of Vogue. Beverly became the first black model to grace its cover in August 1974, and Kelly dominated its covers in the early ’80s. You may also remember Kelly through her catchy Cover Girl commercials that rang out, “That face, that face, that Cover Girl face!” Or maybe because she was, for many years, the girlfriend of bad boy rockstar Rod Stewart. Today, Beverly and Kelly are living proof that age is only a number. The now 60-somethings look as radiant and beautiful as ever on our GENLUX cover in their matching yellow Halston halter dresses photographed on the beaches of Malibu by Marc Baptiste and styled by Mimi Lombardo. I have Rod to thank for inspiring the title for Beverly and Kelly’s feature story: Forever Young (p74). In this “ageless” issue, we also feature actress Maeve Quinlan—youthful at 57—whom we know from her 11-year
role as Megan on T he Bold and the Beautiful. The stunning images of Maeve are courtesy of genius photographer Andrew Matusik, who recently moved back to LA from New York, and Corinne DiGiaimo, a brilliant up-and-coming stylist from Texas (p28). In the serendipity department: I had the opportunity to meet a woman whose photograph I’ve gazed at a thousand times over the last 30 years. In photographer Slim Aarons’s famous image, Poolside Gossip, two women are seen chatting while nestled on white chaise lounges behind the Kaufmann Desert House—the home designed by architect Richard Neutra. The photo captures the essence of Palm Springs life in the late ’60s and early ’70s. The woman on the right in the picture is Nelda Linsk, who, at the time, owned the magnificent home. Last week, Nelda was honored at the second annual Beverly Johnson’s Mother’s Day Shop for a Cause Extravaganza to benefit The Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center. The event was sponsored by Saks Fifth Avenue and GENLUX. Through pre- and post-event conversations, I expressed how it would be my dream to recreate her photograph at the famed estate. Stay tuned. G

Your GPS? I’m in Topanga Canyon, which is between Santa Monica and Malibu. It is absolute bliss, surrounded by nature, the rolling hills, and the Pacific Ocean below. Life here feels a lot slower and so serene, and at times it reminds me of Ireland. For breakfast? My first meal is lunch, where I’ll usually opt for half of a turkey sandwich on whole grain bread with avocado paired with a yummy protein shake by Juice Plus. You’re wearing? I have on my favorite leggings by Savvi in Skins (shop it on my Instagram blog @maeveintoxicatingbeauty), a Rolling Stones t-shirt I shrunk to fit, and my favorite Jolie sweater wrap over it—all also by Savvi. Your roots? My parents and brothers were born and raised in Ireland, and I am the first of my family to be born in the US, and I have dual citizenship. I moved from Chicago to Los Angeles at 19 to attend USC under a full tennis ride, and Los Angeles has been home ever since. Physical change? I HATE my big toe. I know that it sounds stupid, but I feel like I somehow got Fred Flintstone’s big toe surrounded by a bunch of Barney Rubble’s little ones. Character change? I’d care a lot less. I care too much about everything. Your passion? Acting slash performing is my number one passion and always has been since I was about three. Even during my pro tennis career, my Mom always said if I was playing on a frontcourt with bleachers, she knew I would play my best, but things might be tricky if I played on a backcourt.
Guilty pleasures? Brown sugar Pop-Tarts, Candy Corn, Heath Bars, Crunchie Bars from Ireland, and a McDonald’s plain hamburger and fries. Hopefully, never at the same time. Getaway must-haves? 1.Vaseline Petroleum Jelly is my one-stop product for lip gloss, makeup remover, and hydration sealer. 2. Rodan+Fields sunblock and moisturizer (I sell it on my Maeve Intoxicating Beauty blog/ shop site), and 3. The Mighty Audio (avail on Amazon), so I can listen to my Spotify playlists without using my iPhone. Binge-watching? Just finished Yellowstone, Ozark, and Inventing Anna. While I await my next round of binge shows, my fiance and I have started Curb Your Enthusiasm from the very first episode onward. Timeless hilarity. Self advice? I’d tell my teen self to put the oxygen mask on yourself first before you put the same onto others. We can only help others to the fullest if we tend to our own needs first, and I still struggle with that even today. Time travel? I’d time machine back to the ’20s when my parents were born, and specifically, I would spend a day in the days of very Old Hollywood. I’ve always wished I was an actress during the vintage era of Old Hollywood. Earliest memory? When I was three, I remember running out of the house to greet my Dad coming home from work the minute I heard his car hit the gravel and then singing The 5th Dimension’s song Up Up and Away as he recorded me on a tape recorder before bedtime.

Childhood crushes? John Travolta after seeing Saturday Night Fever and Grease; Starsky from Starsky & Hutch; The Professor from Gilligan’s Island; Roger Moore as James Bond 007; Greg Brady from The Brady Bunch, and tennis great Jimmy Connors. As you can see I am a child of the’ 70s—kind of still am. Giving back? My top charities are Lynne Cohen Foundation and 5K Kickin’ It for Cancer. My mother is a 25-year survivor of stage-three ovarian cancer, and one of my best friends, Chris Evert, is successfully beating stage-one ovarian cancer right now. I compete in Ovarian Cancer 5Ks and marathons (which is saying a lot because I hate running). From 2012-2020, I was part of the Go Girl Energy Drink team, which helps raise awareness and funds pink ribbon ovarian and breast cancer research causes. My former USC sorority roommate and one of my very best friends, Shannon Deary-Bell, is the CEO. Everyday style? I am a California casual girl, and I love simple yet classy looks with a hint of a trend mixed in. My usual uniform is leggings by Savvi, or a great fitting pair of Paige jeans, a classic fitted tee, or husband shirt by The Gap, with a trendy belt by Gucci. Hermes, Lowe, Iro, or Tory Burch for my trend items. Dream lunch-date? Cher. She’s an Oscar, Emmy, and Grammy award winner and my childhood idol since 6. I had the amazing experience of meeting her in her dressing room after one of her shows in Vegas, all because of the kindness of Cher’s best friend, Loree Rodkin, who arranged it for me. What’s next? I’m really excited about my upcoming Lifetime movie, Fit To Kill. It was such an escape and an actor’s dream to play such a complicated and crazy character as Claudia Moreau. Think Devil Wears Prada as a thriller. The ultra-talented Revell Carpenter plays the other lead actress, and it’s brilliantly directed by David Benullo. Next life? In a word ... Cher! G

RV MEDIUM BUCKET SUEDE Handbag contents? Lip gloss, eye drops, BAG $2550; credit card, vaccination card, small VIRGULE LACQUERED compact, and tissue. BUCKLE SLINGBACK
Your breakfast? Water. A flowing river has no debris. Current GPS? I am living in the desert near Palm Springs. I’m in bed looking out at the mountains, palm trees, and flowers. You’re wearing? I’m wearing a vintage Fernando Sánchez floor-length silk robe. It’s white with one-inch black trim and beautiful large red rose at the bottom right side. Latest shoot? Our GENLUX shoot with Kelly Emberg, who I adore! Besides being gorgeous, she is a SUPER model. We have worked together before, but at this cover shoot, I saw her move and pose for photographer Marc Baptiste, and she is a fantastic model and a good person. We’ve remained in touch with one another through the years.
PATENT LEATHER Binge watching? The Crown. I’ve PUMP, seen$875, it at least three times. ROGERVIVIER.COM TIGHTS STYLIST OWN Self wisdom? I’d go back in time and tell my teen self that it’s not important to be liked by the popular girls. It’s most important to be yourself—which is enough! Physical change? I’d like to have a tiny waist—a little hourglass shape.
KEEP IT SHORT AND CHIC
Current passion? My grandchildren! They call me Softa because I’m tough and soft. You’ll find me at their parentteacher meetings, school plays, basketball and baseball games. I’ve taught my oldest three how to swim. I’m a hovering grandmother.
Character change? I wouldn’t change anything about my character, but be even nicer than I already am.
Travel destination? I want to travel to India because I love the culture. And next week would work. Biggest fear? Not remaining fearless!
Childhood crush? My childhood crush was every cute boy. Childhood bullying? I found out from these girls that beat me up that my baby sister stole their boyfriends. I got every single one of them back. We are friends now.
Stylist Mimi Lombardo inspires us to wear it short, like these sweet looks on lovely Lindsay Whidby.
Guilty pleasure? Eating penny candy from my childhood like Tootsie Rolls and Milk Duds and eating them in bed. Yummy! It should be a guilty pleasure, but it’s not—I love it that much. Favorite charity? I sit on the board of The Barbara Sinatra Center for Abused Children. I teach a class about modeling, and we put on a fashion show fundraiser.
Biggest regret? Fortunately, I have no regrets.
What’s next? I have quite a few projects logged in the books. 28 different ones from TV shows, movies, books, and licensing deals. Next life? I wish to come back as the Dalia Lama.
Beverly’s Beauty Secret? Retrouvé is my go-to skincare and an essential part of my beauty regimen. Jami Heidegger, whose family started Kiehl’s back in the day, created this amazing collection. I’m consistent with my daily routine. I cleanse everyday, and don’t sleep with makeup on. I keep out of the sun as much as possible and always use sunblock. I avoid pulling or rubbing roughly on my face. I moisturize, use a light scrub and moisturize more! I use a weekly face mask and have facials regularly. For youth boosters, I turn to Dr. Wendy E. Roberts [wendyrobertsmd.com] and I like Botox. It works! Treat yourself the way you would a plant, your child or puppy. In other words, be kind to yourself.

“That face, that face, that Covergirl face!” That catchy opening line from the 80s makeup commercial and her numerous Vogue covers introduced the world to LL Texas-born supermodel Kelly Emberg. Today, you’ll find Kelly farming vegetables Y EMB in her many-acre backyard, chiming in on the pages of GENLUX as our garden editor, or smashing a nasty backhand on her local pickleball court. Kelly returns her best answers to our GENLUX Two-Word Interview. —SK UX
Your breakfast? Today I ate an early lunch with a superfood baby greens salad—all from my vegetable garden. Current GPS? I am sitting in my breakfast room in Rancho Santa Fe, CA. Your surroundings? A large oil painting from my husband’s great-greatgrandfather hangs above a leather tuxedo sofa. We have dark wood floors, and tongue-and-groove ceilings with heavy beams. An area rug with a substantial wooden coffee table is flanked by a large wingback chair upholstered in Ralph Lauren houndstooth fabric, and two crimson antique velvet occasional chairs. Any pets? Yes! Paco, our rescue miniature Schnauzer mix; Gypsy, our 13-year-old Border Terrier; Dink, a rescue that rescued us during the pandemic; and Paco, the tiny, feisty one. Jackson, my Goffin Cockatoo parrot, loves people and is always searching for attention, especially mine. You’re wearing? Well, as usual, I’m wearing something casual and comfortable. I have on black leggings from Target and a bright pink sleeveless golf shirt by Joefit, from The Vintage golf shop in Palm Desert. I’m wearing a black lululemon cropped hoodie and black Asics court tennis shoes. My son, Tyler, wants to play pickleball today, so I’m ready to go.
Latest shoot? This GENLUX cover shoot!
Beverly Johnson is one of my favorite people—truly a ray of light. Every time I see her, it’s as if no time has passed. Working with such a pro makes everything easier. I’m lucky I’ve worked with such talented people throughout my career and to have friendships with iconic models like Beverly Johnson. Your passions? Growing my own vegetables, and pickleball! I’m captain of a neighborhood league. Who knew? Life is interesting. If you’d told me that I would get this involved with pickleball two years ago, I would have called you crazy. Well, that’s what life’s all about—it’s always throwing you curve. Guilty pleasure? Give me some tortilla chips with Mexican cheese and sliced serrano chilies with Tony Jacal’s salsa!
Handbag contents? My American Express credit card, Clinique bamboo color lip pencil, and Revlon lipgloss in Snow Pink. Binge-watching? I’m a little late, but I’ve just discovered Friends! I also just finished watching Inventing Anna on Netflix, another good one. Note to self ? I’d tell my teen self to relax and enjoy the moment—it goes by really fast. Character change? I wish I were a little less sensitive and not so stubborn. Physical change? I got fired from my first modeling job in New York because of my calves! It was a kneesock job, and the photographer said they were too muscular. I said not to give me the socks with the horizontal stripes! Haha! Oh, well, now they come in handy on the pickle-ball court.
Time travel? I’d go back to meet my grandparents when they first settled in Palmer, Matanuska-Susitna borough. My grandmother died young in a tragic fire when my father was 5. I found letters she wrote while she was there through ancestry.com. She felt alone and afraid. Favorite charity? Feeding San Diego. I also help people understand where their food comes from through growing food. If I can get everyone to plant one seed, the world would be a better place—people’s health and the environment would prosper. Childhood crush? In 3rd and 4th grade, there was the cutest boy named Davy who did a ventriloquist act during showand-tell with his dog puppet and was the fastest runner in our class. I happened to be just as fast. So, when we had to race, I would let him win. He never knew I liked him.
Kelly’s Beauty secret? Exercise: Luckily, I’ve always enjoyed exercise. Taking an aerobics class with energetic music at the gym or finding a hobby like pickleball helps keep me smiling, positive, and feeling younger than my years. One prerequisite is that I have to have fun doing it! Eating healthy: Growing food has taught me what is good for me to eat. When I indulge in unhealthy food, I feel terrible afterward, because it zaps my energy and makes me tired. Eating lots of fruits and veggies with a good source of protein is a recipe to keep us looking and feeling our best. Lots of water: Water is the best beauty secret for your overall health and skin. Laugh: Have you ever noticed that happy people are the most attractive? I gravitate to happy people; they make me happier. Positive attitude: A lot has happened recently to complain about, but I refuse to live in the past, especially if it will make me angry or sad. I can always find a silver lining. Without Covid, I would never have started playing pickleball, or have adopted my rescue dog, Dink! I’m obsessed!
78 GENLUX SPRING/SUMMER 2022
Childhood bullying? Some of the neighborhood boys made fun of my large teeth. Little did I know that they would come in handy once I started modeling. Biggest fear? The older I get, the less I am afraid of things. I just hope I am alive to see my grandchildren and play pickleball with them. Biggest regret? My biggest regret is moving away from Houston at age 18 and never moving back. It wasn’t Houston that I missed; it was my family. I raised my children away from their grandparents, aunt, uncle, and cousins. I think my children would have had a better relationship with their relatives if I hadn’t moved. What’s next? Before Covid, I was gearing up to make dog leashes, and I invented a new type of pillow. Unfortunately, when the world stopped, so did my projects. I want to start them up again and get excited about other new possibilities. Who knows, maybe I will get into the pickleball business. Next life? Now that’s a stumper. I just hope the world is in better condition, so I would like to come back. I have been pretty lucky in this life. I think I will leave that answer up to a greater power. Surprise me!

I got a new fave lipstick, and it’s a beautiful one. Valdé System is refillable, and so elegant! Rather than buying 20 lipsticks and 20 cases, you buy one refillable container that you’ll use again and again. I like that! I love collecting art books, don’t you? My latest purchase is about one of my favorite artists and very good friend, Michael Ray Charles. He is a pioneer in exploring the representation of African-American communities within American history and pop culture. I have had a head-spinning few weeks of late. I went to Venice to attend the incredible wedding of Aliya Modi and financial wizard Brett Carlson. It was a beautiful, petite, and utterly gorgeous affair, and the stunning bride was radiant as she expressed her vows. After three days of parties, I took a train ride on the Orient Express for a reunion of old and wonderful new friends that I met at the Amanpuri in Thailand when it first opened. Venice was vibrant with The Art Biennale, and I loved Lorenzo Quinn’s giant hands sculpture and Subodh Gupta’s incredible ‘Cooking the World’ installation at the Cipriani where I stayed. Next, I traveled to Paris to see my friend Countess Marina Cigonia, who showed the documentary about her life as a film producer and advocate of LGBT rights. We had dinner and stayed in the new gorgeous rooms at the Hotel Costes. Love the white and vibrant architecture against the cozy and romantic old Costes. I went with my son Jack, and we walked all over Paris. You know me as the woman in black, but lately, I am loving the colorful Versace and Fendi collab, Fendace! So many beautiful pieces in this collection. Like old treasured friends who know your quirks and still love you, I keep old favourite fashion that finds their way back. I’m also carrying a Versace circular bag and a Mui Mui long coat. Travelling is more manageable than you can imagine— provided you have a QR code—so it’s time to get out and see new places. I am engrossed in the painful public saga between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. A reflection of all that is wrong in our society. I have also been holding the hand of a dear friend, Amanda Japp, who was diagnosed with cancer. Sadly, Amanda Japp passed only eight weeks after being diagnosed. May she rest in peace, and may we all please support cancer charities. G

GENLUX The Vitamin of Youth
Vitamin C is called the vitamin of youth—one of the most effective and best-studied skin rejuvenating ingredients. It quickly brings visible results by improving the quality and appearance of the skin. Because of its truly amazing skin benefits, it’s an irreplaceable part of your daily skincare regimen. Below are the five most important facts that you should know about vitamin C. -Ninka B @ninkabskin
1. ANTI-AGING ACTION
Ninka B. Recommends
Collagen is a protein made from three intertwined chains, resembling a braid. When it’s tightly curled, our skin is firm and supple. Unfortunately, with age, the collagen structure loosens. Scientific research proves that vitamin C is the salvation for the effective improvement of collagen production. When used regularly, it improves skin firmness and smoothes wrinkles.

Sircuit Skin sircuit weapon Vitamin C Therapy Serum, $85, sircuitskin.com
2. BYE BYE, DARK SPOTS
The great advantage of vitamin C is its effectiveness at brightening the skin and evening its tone. Ascorbic acid belongs to the inhibitors of melanogenesis. It inhibits the pigment (melanin) production in the skin, acting as a depigmentation agent. Thanks to these properties of vitamin C, you can effectively fight discoloration at any time of the year.
3. AN INVISIBLE SHIELD
Vitamin C is one of the most potent antioxidants, and as such, it effectively counteracts the negative influence of free radicals on the skin.
Glo Skin Beauty Hydra-Bright AHA Hydrator $54, gloskinbeauty.com
4. PREVENTION! MY RULES OF THUMB: 1. Being proactive and preventing skin issues is better than correcting down the line.
2. Use Vitamin C to add radiance and luminosity to the skin. It will give your skin a fresh and rested appearance.
5. STRENGTHEN BLOOD VESSEL WALLS
Many are unaware that vitamin C can even correct visible blood vessels in the skin by sealing and strengthening them. Owing to this, vitamin C effectively fights skin redness by reducing the visibility of dilated capillaries.

Adios, Spring, and Hello, Summer!
Timing is of the essence for growing a healthy, productive, organic vegetable garden. Don’t dillydally. Get planting before it’s too late! By Kelly Emberg - The Model Gardener
IN MAY The weather is warming up, so harvest your
cool-season crops and replace them with new warm-season veggies. Mulch around plants to keep roots cool and moisture in. Insects like lace bugs, whiteflies, aphids, slugs, and snails will begin to appear. Starting this month, keep your deciduous fruit trees well-watered. Build water basins around trees to prevent run-off. Avoid pruning your plants at this time. Fruit should have set on some of your early fruiting trees. Cover them with bird netting to protect them from bird damage. Start to weed your garden daily! It’s amazing how fast they grow—it’s much easier to pull them when they’re young! WHAT AND WHERE TO PLANT
Pick somewhere in your garden with 6-8 hours of direct sun for all vegetables and herbs. Basil plants can go in now, as well as most herbs. • Transplants like lavender, marjoram, rosemary, and thyme flourish in our Mediterranean-type climate. • Transplants: eggplant, sweet potatoes, okra, onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers. • Plant from seeds: beans, summer squash, melons, cucumber, and corn.

IN JUNE June and July are the driest months. Water slowly,
five or six inches deep, letting the soil dry between waterings, but avoid overwatering! Deep watering will force roots to grow downward, where moisture is more easily accessible. Continue to apply a 3 to 4-inch layer of mulch around the roots of your plants to retain moisture during the dry summer months. June is a little hot to plant most edibles, so be sure to water your delicate plants before and after you plant! On scorching days, put shade cloth over tomatoes and new transplants, and make sure they still have good airflow. Combine plants to maximize shade and nutrients—this is called companion planting. The “Three Sisters” is a technique where you plant corn first, then pole beans, which add nitrogen to the soil and utilize the corn to climb on. Then, plant pumpkins or squash, its large leaves provide shade for the roots of the corn and beans. PLANT IN THE GROUND
• You can plant the plants you can grow in May but remember your crop might be cut short when, and if, early cool weather comes along, especially if you live inland. • You can also plant heat-resistant lettuces or mesclun in those gaps between smaller crops. Be sure to water consistently. • Last call to plant corn early in the month. • Start planting your pumpkins now. It takes from 75 to 100 days to harvest, so start now if you want pumpkins for October!
WATCH OUT FOR THESE!
In gardens starting in May and into the warm season, some common problems are gray leaf spots, leaf miner, blossom end rot, powdery mildew, aphids, spider mites, and hornworms. You might have missed the cucumber beetle because they emerge in early Spring. Starting your warmseason planting late could have some benefits! Hose off squash and pumpkin foliage early in the morning to remove fungus spores that cause powdery mildew and allow leaves to dry before night falls. To remove tomato hornworms, lightly sprinkle plants with water, which will make the worms wiggle, which will make them easier to find and pick off. Never water your garden late in the day as many bacterial and fungal diseases thrive overnight in warm, moist, dark conditions. MY FAVORITE THING TO GROW
If you are going only to plant one thing, you must plant tomatoes! They always taste better if they are homegrown! Mid-to-late June is the best time to plant them because they love the heat! Protect those tender seedlings once they go in! Always look for sturdy transplants and vibrant green. Find ones that are 3-to-6 inches tall, and come in a six-pack or four-pack trays for success. Believe it or not, bigger isn’t always better! More mature plants are more susceptible to transplant shock. Avoid plants where their roots are pushing against the walls of the container and growing out of the bottom. Don’t select transplants that already have

June 21st is the first day of summer and the longest day of the year. It’s a day that signifies it’s too hot to plant those cool-season crops or tender warm-season transplants and seedlings! For now, focus your attention on harvesting the rest of your cool-season veggies to make room for some new summer crops. Here are some tips!

Total time: 45 min Prep: 30 min Cook: 15 min Yield: 6 servings
INGREDIENTS 1 cup dried chanterelle mushrooms 1 cup dried morel mushrooms 1 cup dried shiitake mushrooms 3 cups white wine 1 cup warm water 6 tomatoes, cored and seeded plus 1 tomato, chopped 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons minced shallots 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1 cup diced onion 1 1/4 cup Panko bread crumbs 1/4 teaspoon pepper 4 ounces parmesean cheese at room temperature 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley leaves
flowers or fruit, and pinch off any flowers before planting. This directs the energy to the roots, promoting a more robust, healthier plant and better harvest! To avoid transplant shock, place young plants outside for a couple of days to acclimate. Once planted, stake appropriately. Tomatoes like to be deeply watered at the roots when the soil is dry. Water daily your tomatoes planted in pots or when it’s really hot! Dodge the leaves when watering to prevent fungus growth. TIP Once your tomatoes start to color, it’s time to pick them—no need to wait till they ripen on the vine. If left, your tomato plant will start stealing the sugar back! Besides, the longer you leave them on the vine, the more they are exposed to sunburn, insects, deer, and rodents, which reduces your harvest!
STUFFED TOMATOES 1. Rehydrate mushrooms in container of water and wine. Squeeze excess liquid from mushrooms and reserve liquid. Chop mushrooms. 2. Core and seed tomato halves with grapefruit spoon. Liberally sprinkle with salt to purge excess liquid and place upside down to drain. Sauté 2 tablespoons of olive oil and add shallots, garlic, and onion until translucent. Add mushrooms. Cook for 5 minutes and then add reserved mushroom liquid and cook for additional 4 to 5 minutes or until liquid is mostly absorbed. Add panko and the roughly chopped tomato and stir. Add salt and pepper to the mushroom mixture and remove from heat. 3. Preheat the broiler. Mix the cheese and parsley and reserve. Stuff each tomato with the mushroom stuffing and top with ample layer of cheese mixture. Park tomatoes on a baking sheet on middle rack for 5 to 7 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden brown. Tip: Leave broiler door cracked open so it doesn’t turn off.
to mature for harvest. Some varieties of summer squash like Patty-pan, Aristocrat green zucchini, and various crooknecks mature in less than two months. Early Girl tomatoes take 50 days to harvest, Sun Gold, 65 days, Black Cherry, 64 days, and Black Prince, 70 – 90 days. One might assume warm-season veggies can be planted all through the summer months. But the truth be told, even the shortest season’s veggies take around 50 days until maturity. It is good practice to get a jump on planting in the spring before it gets too hot. Then concentrate on protecting, watering, and nurturing them through the summer months. Not to worry, you still have some time! What are you waiting for? Slap on that sunscreen, and get to work! My best,
QUICK SUMMER CROPS
