STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE Earlier this year, I sent an introductory email to legendary photographer Douglas Kirkland inquiring about a possible collaboration. Like sending a job application letter, I read and reread the email a thousand times before nervously hitting the send button. Whoosh! Then, I waited. A longtime admirer of Kirkland’s work, I’ve watched his YouTube interviews and drooled over his limited-edition prints of Audrey, Marilyn, and Brigitte Bardot at the Mouche Gallery in Beverly Hills. About this time, a new documentary on his life, T hat Click, premiered in Santa Barbara. Directed by Luca Severi, the film showcases Kirkland’s treasure trove of iconic images. Many of the Kirkland’s subjects like Sharon Stone, Baz Lurmann, Nicole Kidman, Andy Garcia, Elle Fanning, and Michelle Williams – icons in their own right – appear in the film, and give glowing testimonials. At 85 (now 86—happy birthday Douglas!), Kirkland’s stock was on the rise...again. A short time later, an email popped up from Françoise, Douglas’s wife and producer of his shoots, saying they’d love to work with me on a GENLUX magazine feature and that we should meet—perhaps for dinner at their home. The Kirkland home is as one would expect. A midcentury-modern filled with nicely-framed photographs from Kirkland’s massive archive. Over dinner, I suggested a GENLUX issue devoted exclusively to the work of Douglas Kirkland. He would shoot the entire magazine—cover to cover. Each woman styled using inspiration from a different decade. It would be a significant amount of work for one shooter to accomplish. Something to sleep on was how we left it. The Kirklands not only accepted, they were involved in all steps along the way—from finding our subjects to makeup and hair to styling, and finally, to props and sets. For our shoots, Françoise also donned her chef ’s hat and graciously prepared fresh salads and hot dishes that were delicious! Françoise recommended two perfect GENLUX subjects: Linda Collins, who we shot in a nod to the 70s (p30), and Mónica Fonseca, a dead ringer for a 60s Jerry Hall (p38).
16 GENLUX SUMMER 2020
Both are beautiful, strong, successful, kind, and philanthropic women, who have a compelling story. For our 50s pinup girl, we went with burlesque star and lingerie designer Mosh (pronounced like gosh), who pulled off a darn good Marilyn (p46). Things were jamming along as smoothly as a Hasselblad when, boom! COVID-19 hit, and our shoots screeched to a halt. We were two stories short of completing our magazine. As our city began to reopen, I proposed that Douglas turn his camera on Françoise. The pair met 55 years ago in Paris when Douglas was shooting Audrey Hepburn and they’ve been together ever since. You’ll discover their love story is rare and true (p56). Last month, my dear friend of 31 years, Beverly Johnson, penned a powerful op-ed in the Washington Post. In it, she wrote about racial inequality in the fashion industry. She took matters a step further by initiating The Beverly Johnson Rule, where, similar to the Rooney Rule in the NFL, Black candidates must be considered for vacant high-level positions. In the fashion and beauty industry, the charge begins in the boardrooms and extends to photographers, models, makeup artists, stylists, and hairstylists. It’s the call-to-action that will effectuate positive change. Read more about it in her interview and see Douglas Kirkland’s stunning images of Beverly (p22). Let it also be noted that GENLUX pledged its support of The Beverly Johnson Rule. Last, but certainly not least, is the 38-page tribute to Kirkland and his extraordinary images (p64). I would point out my favorites, but there are too many to list. So, it’s with great pleasure that I present our GENLUX Summer 2020 issue—photographed entirely by one of the true masters of photography, and my new friend, Douglas Kirkland. Enjoy!

24 GENLUX SUMMER 2020
In the wake of the consciousness-raising George Floyd killing, America appears ready for change. In June, Beverly Johnson, the first African-American model to appear on the cover of American Vogue, wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post. In it, she addressed the inequality that continues to persist in the fashion industry—46 years after her groundbreaking cover. “Change needs to come from the top,” Beverly shared via phone from her Palm Springs home. “The only way to bring about change is to have Black voices heard where the company’s strategies and policies are made—in the boardrooms and executive offices. That’s where ‘The Beverly Johnson Rule,’ comes in.” Beverly’s concept is similar to the Rooney Rule in the National Football League. Dan Rooney, the owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, saw racial inequality in the hiring of coaches and initiated a rule whereby at least one minority candidate must be interviewed for any vacant head coaching position. The Beverly Johnson Rule requires at least two Black professionals be meaningfully interviewed for influential positions. This rule would be especially relevant to board directors, C-suite executives, top editorial positions, and other key roles. She also invites chief executives of companies in the fashion, beauty, and media industries to adopt this rule. The Retrouvé skincare owner was the first to sign. “I had met Jami Heidegger through her product, Retrouvé. My skin was getting dry out here in the desert—nothing was working. I used her balm, and the next day my skin was soft. It’s a great product. Out of that experience, we started a relationship, and out of all of the people I know, only Jami reached out after the Washington Post op-ed. Jami told me how really sorry she was for what’s going on in America, and sincerely wanted to know more. She also said she wanted to take the pledge. She’s walking the talk!” “Ruth Whitney, the then-editor in chief of Glamour Magazine, the venerable publication that gave me my first break in the 70s, proclaimed that I had broken all color barriers and declared I was the Jackie Robinson of modeling,” says Beverly. “Forty-six years after my Vogue cover, I want to move from being an icon to an iconoclast and continue fighting the racism and exclusion that have been an ugly part of the beauty business for far too long.” G

SUMMER 2020 GENLUX 31
LINDA COLLINS: HER LIFE, IN FOUR ACTS. Act One - Life on the Farm “I lived with my grandparents until I was 14,” Linda Collins says, recounting life in Romania. “My grandma, Zamfira, ran a farm full of animals like goats, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, rabbits, dogs—you name it, we had it, and we also had a winery.” Linda crawled out of bed at 5 AM every day to feed the animals, chop wood, and take the goats up the mountain to pasture. Every week, she helped make homemade cheese, butter, and fresh bread—the tangible rewards of farm life.
Act Two - Shooting for the Stars At school, Linda was heartbreakingly teased for her appearance. “Oy! I remember as if it was yesterday,” she sighs, “Being pushed down on the ground while kids are shouting at me, ‘Why are you so thin?’ or ‘Why are you so tall?’ or ‘You think you’re so beautiful?’ These are tough times to remember—even now.” Consequently, Linda’s dream was never to become a model, a television host, or an actress. Instead, Linda’s vision was to join the NASA space team. To reach that lofty goal, she enrolled at the University of Bucharest to study nuclear physics. That trajectory shifted when, at 18, she was discovered by model agent Andrea Tanasescu. The next thing Linda knew, she was on a magazine cover.
Act Three - Pinch Me, I Must be Dreaming! In the blink of an eye, the star chaser became a star. She hosted BINGO, a popular live 6-hour game show. “Next came the fashion runways, commercials, music videos, Coca-Cola billboards, and being discovered by Franco Zeffirelli to play alongside Jeremy Irons in Callas Forever,” Linda recalls, adding by the time she’d finished her fourth year at the university, “If you’d asked me, I’d still be like, ‘I’m just doing my job, it’s not a career.’” But the modeling gigs kept coming. Who could resist the head-spinning thrill of walking the Fashion Week runways of Milan, Paris, Singapore, and Tokyo; or beg off strutting alongside Alek Wek and Iman for Gianfranco Ferré in Vienna, Austria; or oppose being at Sir Elton John’s fundraiser outside the Opera House? What Linda didn’t know was that another wave of good fortune was headed her way. Act Four - Love Springs Eternal On a lovely Sunday in May 2013, through a mutual friend, Linda met Lance Collins. Call it love at first sight. Lance, a handsome and successful businessman, found massive success in the beverage business with Fuze, NOS, and BodyArmor water. Inseparable since that day, the couple recently celebrated their 7th anniversary and has a 5-year-old son, Henry Constantine. In 2018, the couple sold their company, CORE Water (reportedly for a hefty sum), to Keurig Dr. Pepper. Today, they’re pouring their hearts into helping the environment with their latest water venture, Zen-WTR, which is bottled in 100% ocean-recycled plastic. Financial success enables Linda the time to devote to family and philanthropy. She serves on several nonprofit boards and has been recognized by two US presidents for her humanitarianism. In 2013, for her work with the Clinton Global Initiative, Linda was honored by Bill Clinton as a Clinton Foundation Ambassador. In 2019, for her commitment to UNICEF and her support of the Presidential Initiative to Accelerate Child Survival, President Barack Obama awarded Linda the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Linda shares words of wisdom close to her heart: “I love Gandhi’s quote, ‘Be the change that you wish to see in the world.’ And I cherish one from Mother Teresa, ‘Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do, but how much love we put into that action.’”

LINDA COLLINS ON OUR GENLUX TWO-WORD INTERVIEW Your GPS? I’m at home, in Beverly Hills, quarantined with Lance and Henry. Everyday style? Jeans and a comfy, cozy loose t-shirt, breezy silk lounge pants, or a yoga outfit. I also love anything bohemian, like long, floral dresses. Childhood crush? Not sure if it’s a crush or that I just loved martial arts when I was in high school, but I’d say, Bruce Lee. Biggest heartbreak? It must have been my first breakup— I’m sure this could be my biggest heartbreak. Guilty pleasure? Anything chocolate. Chocolate ice cream, chocolate cake, chocolate cupcakes, hot chocolate—you name it. Sage advice? My father taught me to love life to its fullest with compassion and fun. He said to love music and everyone you meet, travel the world, fear no obstacles, and to have faith—no matter what. I guide myself by his teachings, and, hopefully, I’ll pass these on to my own family. Beauty secret? Clean products. No toxins, no harsh chemicals, all-natural oils, and serums. I have a basic routine with a balanced diet, not too much but not too little either — organic when possible — probiotics and hydration daily. No smoking and a glass of wine only once in a while. Love and laughter, never be alone, share your happiness. With these rules, the better and happier my whole body feels! Nightstand material? I loved reading UnDO IT, by my dear friends, Dean Ornish M.D., and Anne Ornish. Also, Angela Nazarian’s Creative Couples; and Where To Begin, by Cleo Wade—especially now in quarantine.
36 GENLUX SUMMER 2020
Favorite getaway? My husband and I were introduced to The Brando on Tetiaroa Island by our dearest friends, Irena and Mike Medavoy. It’s the most pristine, ecofriendly, and beautiful place. Fantasy dinner? If I could have five, it would be Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa (ha! Already a fantasy alright), and I’d mix them with Oprah and Elliot Mintz, or John Lennon, can we get a plus one? One wish? To have spent more time with my dad, Constantine, who passed away 12 years ago from a ski accident. To have traveled together as we wished we had, but it never happened. Best trait? Loyal, trustworthy (my husband responded to this for me). Role models? I first met Douglas and Francoise Kirkland at a dinner. I was honored when Douglas asked if he could photograph ME! Because of that night, and the photoshoot we did back then, it led to our close friendship. Francoise and Douglas are legends—a constant role model in my life. I consider them family. Favorite charity? I can’t favor one over another—especially now. I am committed to the Rett Syndrome Research Trust, The Brent Shapiro Foundation, Visionary Women, Children’s Action Network, Light School Uriri in Kenya, Playing For Change, and my foundation, Models with a Cause [modelswithacause.org]. At MWAC, we help and support many environmental, human, and children’s rights causes. Future project? Maybe one day I’ll write my memoir, or help to see my husband’s story told first. He is a role model that I’m grateful to love. I know his story would inspire a whole generation to come. G

Your background? I was born in Miami, where my father was doing his master’s degree. My mother got very sick and chose to go back to her country of origin, so our family members could surround her. She passed away when I was three; she was only 26. I grew up in Colombia and attended an allgirls school where I was always outspoken. I came every year to visit my family that resided in the US. When I finished high school, I traveled for a bit to Europe and then returned to Colombia to study journalism and political science. In between, I started working in tv and radio. Describe yourself: In seven words, I would say: smart, intuitive, progressive, confident, generous, curious, and a humanist. Your passion? I am passionate about tech, social entrepreneurship, science, environment, fashion, culture, and I love to interview interesting people in different fields.

50 GENLUX SUMMER 2020
In the pre-COVID-19 months of this year, we set out on a photographic journey with Douglas Kirkland to create a series of fashion features—each representing a different decade. We thought we’d start with the 60s via a nod to Marilyn Monroe—one of the many remarkable women Kirkland photographed back in the day. Lucky us! Who better to bring the world’s most famous blonde back to life than Kirkland himself? Next, we needed our subject. Top of mind was Mosh, the model, burlesque star, and entrepreneur, who oversees her lingerie design business. Born in Moscow to two gymnastics coaches, Mosh spent her childhood watching fairytales (Skazki as Russians call it) and at the gym. After the family moved to Maryland, she swayed from fairytales and the gym to Google and photoshoots and she discovered the erotic work of John Willie (1902-1962), and ModelMayhem.com. Last we checked, Mosh enjoys a fanbase of over 320,000 Instagram followers. We invited her to take on our Genlux ‘Two-Word Interview.’ —SK Your GPS? On an old porch, on a yellow chair, in Los Angeles. Currently, wearing? A black Tom Ford sweater, paint-stained black leggings from perhaps Poundland? Extra-large pom-pom slippers that double up as dusters now. They were a gift from someone who came to see my show once; it’s possible she handmade them—they’re fantastic! Describe yourself? In only five words? Goodness. Me. Must. I. Really? Three blessings? My mother, my experiences, my tool kits. Your passion? Beauty, in the authentic sense. Your heroes? I don’t recall at the moment if I had heroes growing up, people didn’t stick with me that way. Though, I admired many a great deal. Bullying memory? For being a Russian immigrant. Biggest heartbreak? Realizing people don’t necessarily “grow up” when they grow up. Guilty pleasure? I don’t have guilty pleasures. If you have guilt with your pleasures, get another pleasure or throw out the guilt.
Happiest moment? There have been so many of those. Recently, I’ve become close to someone who has made me quite happy; it took years to get closer. Beauty secret? Appreciating every day. And sunscreen. Nightstand reading? Helena Rubinstein: The Woman Who Invented Beauty Everyday fashion? During quarantine? The Audrey Hepburn dance uniform for my upped amount of housework. Black tights, black top, black flats, belted. When we were free some months back, something unfussy, something old, a novelty piece or two, preferably a jumpsuit.
Your tribe? Self-created individuals who follow the beat of their own drum. Biggest regret? Heartache maybe, but not much regret. Long ago, I accepted the ups and downs as the roadmap to what I’ve asked for out of life. Best to just pay attention, and be kind. Best trait? Someone once told me vibrant stability. I thought they said vibrating ability. DNA change? I still slip into negative thinking at times; I’d prefer not to. Future you? Happy. G
Favorite getaway? I tend to travel somewhat frequently, so wherever those travels take me is a fine enough getaway for me. Fantasy dinner? Marlene Dietrich, Tony Duquette (and wife Elizabeth, they were a team after all, so I get two for one), Alain, Kubrick, Jack Cole, and I’ll sit on Dali’s lap. Favorite quote? Different quotes for different occasions, but if I have to pick one motto, it would be, know thyself. Your hobbies? These days, interior decorating.

WHEN DOUGLAS MET FRANÇOISE
In 1965, when a young American photographer named Douglas Kirkland traveled to Paris to photograph Audrey Hepburn, little did he know his real focus would be on the future Mrs. Kirkland. Here, Douglas turns his lens back on Françoise —the French woman at the center of his universe for the past 55 years. "After meeting in Paris, Douglas went back to NY and then was hired to do a story on Charlie Chaplin in London. So I flew to London to meet him. We woke up at 4 in the morning and went for a walk around London. Before the word 'selfie' existed, photo taken with Douglas's left arm. We used to call these 'long arm' photos,'" says Françoise.

58 GENLUX SUMMER 2020
Quoting the last line from Thorton’s Wilder’s The Bridge of St. Luis Rey, “There is a land of the living, and a land of the dead and the bridge is love, the only survival, the only meaning.” Call it destiny, call it chance, when, on a December day in 1965, Douglas Kirkland traveled to Paris to photograph Audrey Hepburn and met Françoise, his future wife. Their geographically unlikely pairing bridged a love story that’s endured 55 years. The Kirklands are quick to point out that they are not best friends; they are indeed true lovers. Here, they thoughtfully answer our Genlux twoword interview. Current disposition? Douglas: Apart from the fear of the virus, this has been a very interesting period. We have the luxury of time: to think, reflect, and enjoy each day, and to spend time in our garden oasis. We have traveled the world so much that we’ve sometimes felt we were chasing our life! Françoise: Somehow, we’ve never been bored, nor at a loss for something to do. We find there's not enough time for everything we plan. At the time the 'shelteringin-place' mandate started, photographer Dana Fineman and her dog Sonny Boy had been staying with us—so we decided to quarantine together. It has been fun and lively up on our Hollywood hill. Love secret? Françoise: The secret to a long love life is chemistry. Douglas: The secret to a long love life is romance. First meeting? Françoise: Douglas was commissioned to photograph Audrey Hepburn for magazine covers in Paris. Audrey was shooting, How to Steal a Million, at the studio de Boulogne, and my mother was the publicist. It also starred Charles Boyer and Peter O’Toole and was directed by William Wyler. Douglas arrived in town with a reputation for being quite the Don Juan. I was visiting my mother on a Friday afternoon when he walked in, sat on a chair, and fell asleep with his feet propped up on the desk—not at all French etiquette! Blame it on jet lag. He was gorgeous, and I had 20 minutes to observe him. I had just turned 22. He woke up, stretched, rubbed his eyes like a little boy – as he still does – and said, ‘Would you like to have dinner with me?’ It caught me by surprise, and I wasn’t sure I understood correctly. I blushed and mumbled something that sounded like, yes. ‘Okay, he said, I’ll pick you up at 8.’
First date? Françoise: He took me to Laperouse on the Left Bank on Quai des Grands Augustins. A legendary restaurant that has existed since 1796 and bills itself as a “Maison de Plaisirs.” First kiss? Françoise: How can one ever forget the first kiss? It was along the banks of the Seine, very late that same night. First home? Françoise: We lived in New York before moving to Los Angeles in 1974. We were pioneers of the Upper Westside. We bought a brownstone on West 94th street between Columbus and Amsterdam—way before it was fashionable. Douglas: Some of our friends worried when they left our place late at night, but we never felt unsafe. It was great fun to live in NYC at that time. Love secret? Douglas: You still have to feel that little thrill when you look at each other. Francoise: We are not each other’s best friend; we are lovers to this day. Best traits? Douglas: I love her spirit, her energy, her lust for life Françoise: I love his passion for his art, his never-ending kindness, his serenity. Memorable shoots? Douglas: Every working moment is exciting. It marks the beginning of a new adventure. Watching a total solar eclipse in Kenya on Lake Rudolph, or spending time in a Nakuru village, was as close as I ever felt to the Gods. Françoise: Spending seven weeks in the Australian bush with Baz Luhrmann, his wife, Catherine Martin, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, and the crew of the film Australia was life changing.
Current home? Françoise: Douglas was on a trip when I put a deposit on a house that he detested when he saw it, so we dropped out of escrow. The real estate agent agreed to show us one last house. I wasn’t sure about it, but Douglas loved it immediately. It is a mid-century-modern home. I promptly turned it into a hybrid, and it now feels like the South of France—that way, we are both happy! Spiritual foundation? Françoise: We are trusting and generous. We believe in the God of Small Deeds. One’s immortality rests with the people who will remember you kindly. Your superpowers? Françoise: Making the ordinary exciting. Douglas: I see the world better through my camera. As I am getting older, I am becoming more of the essence of who I truly am. Work challenges? Françoise: It’s not challenging working with each other. On the contrary, it’s exciting because our work never really stops. Creativity and exchange of ideas have been the foundation of our relationship. As Douglas says, “We are not a one-man band!” Biggest bump? Douglas: Any passionate relationship has to go through some ups and downs. Françoise: If the road were too smooth, it would be dreadfully boring. We live in the now. What’s next? Douglas: Take beautiful pictures of interesting people. We are starting to work on a new book project to honor the Feminine. Women have always been the driving force in my life. Françoise: I want to create a roof garden!
SUMMER 2020 GENLUX 59
DOUGLAS + FRANÇOISE, PLEASE SHARE A FEW OF YOUR FAVORITE THINGS! Favorite restaurant? Douglas: Home. Francoise loves to cook, and she is good at it. Françoise: We like restaurants owned by friends where they treat us like guests in their home, like the Drago brothers’ Il Pastaio and Via Alloro. Favorite movie? Françoise: King of Hearts Douglas: Yankee Doodle Dandy (but only on the 4th of July!) Favorite theme song? Francoise: Noel Coward, “World Weary.” Douglas played Noel Coward for me when I met him in Paris and when he left to go back to the US with Brigitte Bardot I could not stop crying. He promised me.” We will sing "World Weary" again together, and we did. Favorite TV show? Françoise: We don’t watch much television except for MSNBC and 60 Minutes. We enjoyed, The Crown, and Downton Abbey, and started watching Elle Fanning in The Great, because we love her. She is one of Douglas’s very favorites, and we have known her since she was 11. Favorite photographers? Douglas: Gerd Ludwig, Pete Turner, Arnold Newman, Lauren Greenfield, Jeff Dunas, Greg Gorman, Dana Fineman – who took the portraits of us in our garden – and the wonderful Australian photographer Julie Adams, the list goes on.
60 GENLUX SUMMER 2020
Favorite photo subject? Douglas: The one in front of my camera. Favorite getaway? Françoise: Our garden, a friend’s house in Santa Barbara, anywhere in Italy, Paris and Australia. Favorite room? Douglas: The bedroom. Françoise: The kitchen. Favorite color? Douglas: I’m in love with blue skies over our house and puffy clouds. Françoise: I love the mystery of magic hour. Favorite book? Françoise: I have endless stacks of books by my side of the bed. Right now, A Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez; Them by Francine Du Plessix Gray; La Seduction, How the French Play the Game of Life, by Elaine Sciolino. Douglas: Any wonderful photo book. We have quite a collection that I love to revisit often. There’s Sleeping Cars, by Gerd Ludwig, Centennial, by Irvin Penn, A Different Vision on Fashion Photography, by Peter Lindberg, and Generation Wealth, by Lauren Greenfield. Those are just on top of our piles of books! G

MR. KIRKLANDʼS WILD RIDE
If riding through life beyond oneʼs wildest dreams is the goal, then legendary photographer Douglas Kirkland has clearly been cranking on all cylinders. Now 86, with a recently-released documentary, That Click, and representation at Mouche Gallery in Beverly Hills, he shows no signs of slowing down. Here, Kirkland shares with our STEPHEN KAMIFUJI the magical stories behind some of his iconic images.
ANN MARGRET
I was on assignment in Las Vegas doing a story on Ann Margret’s new show for Look magazine when she told me that Dan Haggerty (The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams) had built a special chopper bike for her. I got the idea of photographing her riding in the desert outside Las Vegas in her show costume. She had Dan bring the bike from Los Angeles, and Francoise drove our rented convertible as I sat in the trunk with my cameras speeding across the desert. We had to keep the speed a consistent 60 mph to get the motion of the road behind Ann Margret. When we were finished, I yelled, 'We’ve got it!' She threw her heels up shouting, “Wee!”

ELIZABETH TAYLOR
I was photographing bathing suit fashion in Pismo Beach, California, for Look magazine when I got a call to fly to Las Vegas to sit in on an interview my colleague, Jack Hamilton, was conducting with Elizabeth. She had been ill from the first attempt to shoot Cleopatra. At the time, she was married to Eddie Fisher, and had firmly said, "No pictures!' I sat quietly through the interview and at the end, I introduced myself to her, saying, "I am new with this magazine, and can you imagine what it would mean to me to be given the opportunity to photograph you?" I held her hand and looked deep into those violet eyes, breathing her Jungle Gardenia perfume. She thought for a moment and said, "Come tomorrow night at 7:30," then added, "I don’t have to do this, you know." Elizabeth was the first superstar I photographed, and she is responsible for my career taking off. I will never forget that.

MARILYN MONROE
Look magazine wanted to do a story on a number of actresses for their 25th-anniversary issue. The theme was: How would you like to be remembered 25 years from now? When I met Marilyn, she was like the girl next door, laughing easily and suggesting what I did not dare ask her. "I know what we need," she said. "A bed, white silk sheets, Dom Perignon Champagne, and Frank Sinatra records." Then she added, "I’ll wear nothing under the sheets, but they must be silk." She arrived two hours late the evening of the shoot, floated in, in all her splendor. At some point, she asked everyone to leave the room. "I want to be alone with this boy, I find it usually works better that way." The next day, I went to show her the pictures and she was in a dark mood. Finally, she started to like some of the images, and, referring to herself in the third person, said, "What man wouldn’t want to be in that bed with that girl?"

CHER
Cher has always been one of my favorites. I have photographed her a number of times over the years, and she always makes great pictures. In the late 70s in Los Angeles, roller-skating was the craze. There were weekly roller-skating parties in Reseda, where everyone wanted to be seen. When Life magazine asked me to photograph Cher, we went to Venice beach, where she performed for me as the sun was setting over the Pacific. I love the energy and joy of this image.
72 GENLUX SUMMER 2020
NICOLE KIDMAN
I met Nicole on the set Moulin Rouge, directed by Baz Luhrmann, in Sydney. Later, we were invited to spend 7 weeks in the bush in Kununurra, a remote part of the Northern Territories, during the filming of the movie, Australia. I decided to take my 8x10 camera to document the cast. I love Nicole. She gave a wonderful interview for the documentary on my life, That Click. Her insight and thoughtfulness totally blew me away!

BRIGITTE BARDOT
The set of the film Viva Maria was closed to the press because the director, Louis Malle, complained he couldn’t get any work done. I was the only photographer invited to work with Brigitte Bardot and Jeanne Moreau. A tough job, but someone had to do it! “Bri” as the French called her, was Une Femme Enfant. Translation: a Child Woman. She was a charming tease. She loved to party and play late into the night. She also needed her petits copains available to start a game of cards, play music, and dance at a moment’s notice.

CATHERINE DENEUVE
Catherine Deneuve is a classic beauty. One can’t help but remember her performance in Belle de Jour. Here she is sitting in the window at the Sacher Hotel in Vienna. There is something mysterious and sensual about her, yet she is as inaccessible as an ice princess. She was on the cover of Look magazine with the caption, One of the most beautiful women in the world.

COCO CHANEL
The year is 1962. The interest in Mademoiselle Chanel was revived in the United States when Jacqueline Kennedy wore CHANEL in the White House. Look magazine sent me to Paris that summer to photograph her new collection, which was a resounding success. It was only my second time in Paris, and it was all very exciting. She ignored me at first, insisted I show her some fashion images I had taken of her mannequins (in- house models), but eventually took me under her wing and let me photograph anything I wanted. She encouraged me, she was a wonderful mentor, and I will be forever grateful to her.

ELLE FANNING
I photographed Elle for the first time when she was only 11 years old on the set of Sofia Coppola’s, Somewhere. I saw her in, The Curious Life of Benjamin Button, and Phoebe in Wonderland, and was impressed by her acting sophistication at such a young age. She is a little bit of a muse to me, and I have photographed her many times in different incarnations. The camera loves Elle. There is something exceptional about her. She definitely has star power, and I look forward to our next session.

GLORIA VANDERBILT
Working for Look magazine in the 60s was an ideal job. The magazine expected their photographers to cover a variety of subjects. This image of Gloria Vanderbilt was part of a fashion story on artists. She is wearing an Adolfo 1967 dress made from an antique quilt with her own self-portrait painting of the dress in the background. That dress is now part of the Victoria Albert Museum archive.
FAYE DUNAWAY
While working on Vittorio De Sica’s film, A Place for Lovers, in Treviso Italy, I took Faye Dunaway out for an afternoon in Venice. She told me she liked speed, so to illustrate the feeling, I took a moving 'selfie' of us. Here I am holding the camera in my left hand, driving my little Fiat Spider with the top down. I would not recommend anyone to try this, but for me, this image represents freedom. The photograph on the following spread is Faye, walking around the Grand Canal with a mini dress. The people’s reactions still make me smile.

JUDY GARLAND
I spent a month working and traveling with Judy Garland. That was the way stories were done in those days. She was shooting the TV show, "The Judy Garland Show," with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, having a grand time playing with them. I witnessed her seducing her audience in Toronto, giving them all she had, and then being wheeled on the plane the next day—completely spent. At the end of the story, I photographed her at the Look magazine studio. We played her music, and I said to her, 'Judy, I have watched you for the last weeks, and your life is not easy, is it?' The mood was very intimate and quiet, and I saw a tear roll down her cheek.

I have known Sharon Stone socially for a long time, and to my great pleasure, she is an avid collector of my work, but I had never had the chance to photograph her until recently. The opportunity presented itself in the form of a pro bono project with our mutual friend Price Arana. This benefited a charity called Blessings in a Back Pack. Sharon is a great philanthropist who works tirelessly for the many causes she supports. She is a magnificent subject and looks more beautiful now than ever. I am proud to have her as a friend.

I was sent to Paris, in 1965, to photograph advertising art and magazine covers on Audrey Hepburn while she was filming, How to Steal a Million, with Charles Boyer and Peter O’Toole. She was a fashion icon who wore Givenchy and Courrèges, but was down to earth, delightful, charming, and playful—just like the persona she conveyed in her films. This was also when I met the love of my life, Françoise, and we have been together ever since.

EDITOR’S PICKS
In the past three months, these beauty products were, and still are, my essentials. Because of Covid19, my beauty ritual and other aspects of my life had to be adjusted. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate became my motto. All day I use the refreshing Valmont Primary Veil mist and Koh Gen Do Spa Cleansing Water Cloths on my face. For smooth and healthy hair, once a week, I apply Leonor Greyl masque quintessence. It worked wonders on my curly hair! As for my eyelash extensions (which were falling after a month in quarantine), I discovered Velour Beauty Lash. Easy to apply, especially right before my countless zoom meetings. —Samia Arslane

VALENTINO GARAVANI SUPERVEE CALFSKIN BOOT 85 MM, $1595, VALENTINO.COM
Here in London, we’ve had sunshine and long lazy days with home shopping and gardening. There are no parties and all red carpet events are definitely out of fashion. I have walked the rivers and socialized where I can, but without the infrastructure of what we used to do, life is taking on a different meaning. It’s nice to walk the three or so miles to meet our friends in the park—sometimes in my long red Valentino dress that I bought last year. I removed the lining and now wear it over my gym gear. With scissors in hand, I am adapting everything— chopping up my clothes to make them more wearable. Sometimes I feel if I love something I should wait until September since our way of life is changing every day. Other times, like today, I’ll throw caution to the wind. After all, I do need another pair of shoes, and, well, yet one more YSL dress. Yesterday, I ordered a Marie Antoinette wig, and I shall wear it with my new Moschino jacket while I do the gardening. Fashion, you see, may come in the form of practicality at the moment, but don’t worry, there will be nothing practical about me. One thing to worry about is child trafficking. I cannot believe that people I used to know have become hated household creatures on this subject. Clearing the swamp has become the norm. I watch as the Beverly Hills Housewives enter their last moments of excess—when private jets become a major faux pas. Is their conspicuous consumption becoming increasingly unattractive and out of date? Might a slimmed-down, more spartan life be the new trend, and the red carpet turn an eco-friendly shade of green? This summer I am going walking in the mountains and sailing around Italy – not in a gin palace – but by a boat, with sails. Have a great time, and keep everything real. —Amanda

APRIL SHOWERS
When rolling through the day during the first week of quarantine sans-showering, my brain was foggier and I was moving at half speed. I realized that I was much more productive when I got up, showered, and put on some ‘real clothes.’ The power of the daily shower is not only important to staying clean and clear of viruses and bacteria, I’m also finding my personal best happens when I feel fresh and alert. Also, the spiritual aspect of showering tells us that a good shower can help wash away negative energy.
SHELTER IN CHIC
I don’t know about you, but for the past five weeks I’ve lived in my sweats. Free City’s are my ‘Shelter in Chic’ choice—some of the cutest, and because of the drop-crotch—the most comfortable ever! They were my non-stop staple for the first three weeks of our ‘Shelter in Place’ regulations. The challenge is they allow my waist to expand along with that elastic, so stuffing my face was too easy without the restrictions. It became time to change into ‘real clothing.’ freecitysupershop.com

1. Use warm water: hot water can strip the skin of protective oils. 2. Keep it short: five to ten minutes is long enough. 3. Use a non-drying soap: whether you prefer a bar or liquid body cleanser, choose one labeled as moisturizing. 4. Use soap only on select areas of the body: limit lather to those prone to odor—armpits, groin, buttocks, feet, and between toes. 5. Be gentle: if you use a body scrub or loofah, don’t scrub too hard. The same goes for toweling off: pat, don’t rub, your skin. 6. A Must! Moisturize after showering: if your skin tends to be dry or sensitive, slather your body generously with fragrancefree body lotion or oil while your skin is still damp. 7. Keep poufs and loofahs clean: damp sponges, loofahs, and shower poufs are breeding grounds for bacteria and mildew. Let them air dry outside of the shower and replace them every two weeks.

Ninka B’s 5 Sun Lover’s Protection Steps As an aesthetician advisor at GENLUX, my passion is spreading the knowledge on how to achieve healthy skin. The essence of summer skin is gentle exfoliation, antioxidant protection, hydration, and, as always, sun protection.
3. Eye Treatment in the comfort of your home
1. You love sunshine!
Enjoying the sun’s heat creates the “feel good” energy, and while the sun may have many mental health benefits, the sun’s rays are not so kind to the skin. Daily application of sunscreen will protect your skin and prevent extrinsic aging. Ideal sunscreen has zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Those ingredients reflect the UVA and UVB rays. A bonus to sunscreen ingredients are antioxidants such as vitamin C, green tea, and coenzyme Q10. Regardless of the season, consider sunscreen your #1 essential skincare product all year’ round. Ninka B. recommends: Replenix Sheer Physical Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50+, $42.50, dermstore.com
BEAUTY
GENLUX
2. Free-Radical Damage Control
If you aren’t using an antioxidant serum, now’s a good time to start. Antioxidants are the protectors of skin cells; without them, the skin can become dull and lifeless. Antioxidants bounce off the unstable molecules (aka free radicals). Long-term free-radical damage often contributes to the breakdown of collagen and elastin. What’s more, antioxidants are especially important during summer when UV rays are more potent and create more damage. Add in a daily antioxidant underneath your sunscreen to protect your skin cells and boost collagen. Ninka B. recommends: Sircuit Skin Weapon+ 10% vitamin C therapy serum, $85, sircuitskin.com
Excellent eye treatments can lift our spirits! My musthave bio-cellulose eye mask is from Exquisite. Designed to treat the eye contour area by targeting under eyes and crow’s feet, the uniquely designed shape ensures optimal delivery of plant extracts, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and caffeine. Cool the mask in the fridge and apply it in the morning for 15 minutes and voilà! Skin is visibly hydrated, brightened, and de-puffed. Ninka B. recommends: Exquisite Brightening Anti-Puff Eye Mask, $70 (5 masks per package), glowfromhome.com
4. Exfoliate for the Glow
During hot summer days, I love a great enzymatic exfoliation. It is gentle on the epidermis and effective in revealing smooth, soft glowing skin. I am particularly fond of Susanne Kaufmann’s Enzyme Peel. Mild fruit acids from apple, papaya, and kiwi remove the surface dry skin cells. Created with antiinflammatory and soothing ingredients, this enzyme mask is summertime perfection. It helps to draw out impurities, heals breakouts, exfoliates the skin, and brightens the complexion instantly. Ninka B. recommends: Susanne Kaufmann Enzyme Peel, $71, dermstore.com
5. Thermal Spring Water
Do you love facial mists as much as I do? Misting is a soothing treat for the skin. My favorite is Thermal Spring water from Avène. It has traces of minerals and is clinically proven to calm the skin and boost hydration. It also helps to heal skin irritations such as sunburns and allergies. Keep it in the fridge and spray it on your face, neck and décolleté after a day at the beach or after a run. Super refreshing! Ninka B. recommends: Avène Thermal Spring Water, $18.50, aveneusa.com Protecting skin’s integrity and preventing photo-damage is the mantra. Wishing you an amazing summer adventure! Best, Ninka B @ninkabskin

GENLUX SKIN STRESS —YEP, IT’S REAL. —GINA MARÍ We’re all dealing with a significantly stressful time right now, which can lead to heightened cortisol levels. In turn, this wreaks havoc on our skin. Here are a few products that are my absolute go-to’s if you’re experiencing stress-induced breakouts.
These Drying Times. Like many, you may be suffering from dry skin. If so, IS Clinical’s Warm-
Summer Skin.
Super Serum.
It’s essential to take care of the skin not just on your face, but on your body—especially with Summer upon us. Dry brushing before you jump in the shower is an excellent way to prep your skin and stimulate circulation. I am a big fan of Kayo Body Care. It’s a “face grade” body line that focuses on detoxifying the skin, followed by intense hydration. The Detox Mask to Scrub ($54) is one of my absolute favorites. The combination of charcoal, kaolin clay, coconut oil, and volcanic pumice is fantastic for a nice “buff and polish” without over-drying. I love to follow with their Firming Serum ($46) and Body Beautiful Crème ($56).
Currently, I am obsessed with Furtuna Skin’s Porte Per La Vitalitá Face and Eye Serum ($185). This
clean beauty verified product delivers powerful antioxidants to both the face and eye area. Their Splendore Anchusa™ Complex is clinically proven to block free radical damage by 100%. I’ve always been a huge fan of LED light therapy and have been using Lightwave’s Allure Activate handheld device ($250) at home. This multi-color LED treatment stimulates cellular turnover improving skin’s tone, texture, and overall quality. Product penetration is heightened post-treatment, so I’ve been getting great results applying Furtuna’s serum immediately after.
ing Honey Cleanser ($45),
is a must. This hydrating moisturizer will also keep you exfoliated with papaya enzymes and green tea extract. The cleanser can also be used as a treatment. Massage gently onto damp skin in circular motions and leave on for 5-10 minutes as a mini mask. I follow that up with their HydraIntensive Cooling Masque ($85). Leave on for 5-10
min for more visibly hydrated skin. PRO TIP: For more intense therapeutic hydration, you can sleep in a thin layer of the gel masque overnight.
Seeing Spots. When acne rears its ugly head, I recommend Goldfaden MD’s Fresh A Peel Multi-Acid Resurfacing Peel ($85). It’s great for acne-prone and combination skin. The lactic acid and multi-fruit enzymes provide a superior rate of exfoliation, keeping your skin fresh and glowing. For a nice at-home treatment, follow it with their Facial Detox mask. This purifying mask works to draw out impurities and pore-clogging debris while soothing and calming the skin. I like to follow with Sircuit Cosmeceuticals Molecular Mist (2oz $36; 4oz $65) for an instant boost of hydration. For more information or to purchase these products, visit Gina Marí, ginamari.com
