STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE

STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE

LLast week, I posted photos of Elizabeth Chambers, the beautiful ex-wife of troubled actor Armie Hammer, on Instagram. Like a pesky mosquito, a nasty troll arrived and my knee-jerk reaction to delete the negativity proved a mistake. Like poking a hornet’s nest, the haters doubled down. So I killed them with kindness (or so I thought) by crafting a positive and well-deserved defense of Elizabeth. Another big mistake. That antagonized the haters further, and their garrulous posts intensified. So I waved the white flag (oh, wait, is this an offensive term in 2022?) and moved on.

ast spring, at a Saks Fifth Avenue Palm Desert event hosted by my good friend Beverly Johnson, I had the chance to meet Palm Springs socialite Nelda Linsk. Nelda is the woman wearing yellow in Slim Aarons’ famous 1970 photo, Poolside Gossip— the quintessential image of Palm Springs social life. She and her husband lived in the iconic Richard Neutra-designed Kaufmann House from 1963 to 1971. I asked Nelda if there would be any chance of returning to the house to recreate the famous photo of her for GENLUX She said that the house had just sold to new owners (it’s had three since the Linsks, including Barry Manilow) and that, coincidentally, she was going to meet them soon. A few weeks later, Nelda called me with the good news. They’d agreed.

Another celeb who fends off her fair share of social media mayhem is our lovely and talented cover girl Katharine McPhee Foster. When Kat, 38, married David Foster, 72, their age disparity became troll fodder for days. But who can blame her? What other septuagenarian sports the coolness, charisma, and clout of a David Foster? Kat’s sparkly story showcases some of her new KMF Jewelry collection via photographer Robert Lynden’s stunning photos and chic styling by Coco DiGiaimo (p76).

Kathy Gohari. We’ll ride those coattails, bringing friends out to our Holiday issue release party.

Also in this issue: Along with Lynden, three of my other favorite shooters collabed on this issue of breathtaking fashion images. Tracey Morris covered three great shoots: She shot Dasha Alexandria at LA’s excellent new vegan restaurant for Avant Garden Bistro (p36); shot top model Rainey Forkner for One Rainey Day (p44); and featured designer Louis Verdad, one of LA’s best talents in The Other LV (p68). In New York, photog Arthur Belebeau and stylist Mimi Lombardo lit up the lens with Shiny Objects (p56), as brilliant product shooter Tatsuro Nishimura created stunning handbag photos for Metal Works (p28).

The last time I created a snow scene in LA was for our cover shoot in 2010, with actress Emmy Rossum, when things got off on the wrong foot. On his way to the studio, the snow machine guy got into an accident on the 405, so he never arrived. I assured the frazzled team that I had a plan B (which I didn’t...yet). I ran to the equipment room, found some foam-core board and proceeded to shred it into small bits with a screwdriver. I created a trash bag full of “snow” and poured it from a ladder over the seamless paper, and down on Emmy. Amazingly, it worked.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, I’d like to give special thanks and appreciation to all those photographers, stylists, makeup artist, hairstylists, manicurists, assistants, model agents and models who help make GENLUX possible. And, to our advertisers who continue to support us along this labor-of-love journey to place this print magazine in your hands.

If you’re in Beverly Hills on Nov 17, David and Kat perform songs from their new Christmas album on Rodeo Drive courtesy of the City of Beverly Hills, and the Rodeo Drive Committee helmed by our friend

We set out to recreate Poolside Gossip as authentically as possible. We found original Richard Schultz mid-century lounge chairs and tables and discovered Santa Barbara Designs launched the Poolside Gossip umbrella—based on the original design (What? Really?) . We found out that two had sold to the Garrisons in Palm Springs, who it turned out, graciously agreed to let us borrow one of theirs.

On the day of our shoot, Nelda readily recounted, in precise detail, the events of that January day over 50 years ago, when her friend Slim Aarons came over for a “casual shoot.” He came alone, carrying only a camera and tripod. There were no lights, no assistants, no hair stylist, or makeup or wardrobe people, and the whole shoot took only about an hour. On the contrary, our shoot (p100) took about 8 hours and involved a team of people including photographer Robert Steinken, digitech Robert Morris, hairstylist Louise Moon, makeup artist Bethany Karlyn, wardrobe stylist Joline Towers, and me, as art director.

A fun sidenote to our shoot: Nelda is wearing the same yellow shoes she wore during the original shoot on January 20, 1970. “They’ve sat patiently under my bed for all of these years,” she said.

In the summer of 2020, I was fortunate to work with legendary lensman Douglas Kirkland at his home studio in the Hollywood Hills. It was the first and only time that we devoted an entire GENLUX issue to one photographer. In it, Douglas shot four fabulous women—Beverly Johnson, Linda Collins, Monica Fonseca, and Mosh—and we featured many of Douglas’s iconic photos of Marilyn, Brigitte Bardot, Cher, Coco Chanel, Elle Fanning, Judy Garland, and Audrey Hepburn. The highlight of the shoots—aside from watching Douglas’s childlike heart open up when he was behind the lens—was sitting down to enjoy his wife Françoise’s delicious home-cooked lunches. Sadly, earlier this month, at the age of 88, Douglas Kirkland passed away of natural causes at his home. May he forever rest in peace.

Our cover shoot with the recently-retired GOAT of women’s skiing, Lindsey Vonn, went much smoother. Genius photographer Marc Baptiste and super stylist Mimi Lombardo came out from New York, and we set up a cool snow scene in my friend Isabel Madison’s backyard on Benedict Canyon, where she’s got this enormous infinity pool (lake for the day) and gorgeous mountain views (Swiss Alps). We rented a snow machine and made it snow in 85-degree Beverly Hills (p84).

hates the cold, so the icing on the cake for her was appearing to be knee-deep in fresh powder—when in reality—she’s comfortably toasty in California sunshine, wearing a pair of open-toe Jimmy Choo platforms.

THE PREMIÈRE, CHANEL’S CLASSIC TIMEPIECE THAT THEN-ARTISTIC DIRECTOR JACQUES HELLEU CREATED IN 1987, IS BACK.

—STEPHEN KAMIFUJI

If I were packing for an extended stay on that proverbial desert island with only one coffee table book, it would be 2005’s CHANEL by Jacques Helleu. This eye-inspiring history of Helleu’s feats as the brand’s artistic director for 40 years is a priceless motivator for all creatives. Helleu started his CHANEL career at only 18 with the goal of taking care of “problems of taste.” He single-handedly shaped CHANEL through his star-power campaigns (Estelle Warren, Catherine Deneuve, Vanessa Paradis, Keira Knightley) and sleek product designs. Though Helleu passed away in 2007, his legacy lives on, and recently, as CHANEL Watchmaking and Fine Jewelry finds its new home in the completely redesigned townhouse at 18 place Vendôme, the Première watch that he conceived in 1987 has returned to the jewelry case these many years later—as classic and timeless as ever.

Last Night inNewYork ONGENLUX

THE FILM ABOUT DAVID PATRICK COLUMBIA, CREATOR OF THE NEWYORKSOCIALDIARY,IS LIKE A WALK IN CENTRAL PARK .

For those who relish a good documentary, check out Last Night in New York —the introspective story of social insider David Patrick Columbia, the tall, handsome creator of the New York Social Diary. Like Bill Cunningham: New York, the film shares the life and profound reflections of a man who chronicles his adventures hanging out with New York’s elite. Sprinkled about are society doyennes Muffie Potter Aston, Susan Gutfruend, Joan Kingsley, Tobie Roosevelt, Allison Rockefeller, Nina Griscom, Joy Ingham, and Donna Antebi, who lovingly sing Columbia’s praises. A few poignant truths about Columbia’s past seem to provide the impetus for his career path. He grew up poor without plumbing or heat, and his father, who never got along with David’s mother, was difficult. David shares about one party where the host cast a mortifying persona non-grata glare on him. Without naming names, he wrote about the uncomfortable incident in the NYSD and received thumbs up from those who knew the woman— igniting the power of his pen. Writing his near-daily column for more than 20 years—does Columbia consider himself an insider now? “I didn’t feel like I didn’t belong,” Columbia shared with the NY Post, “but I never felt like I was quite good enough to be part of the group.” He continued, “I’m an observer and have always been an observer.”

G

Last Night in New York is directed by Matthew Miele, director of Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s, and Always at the Carlyle . The film begins streaming on February 14th on multiple platforms, including AppleTV/iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, Tubi, and Peacock.

It’s ironic that for as much time as Lindsey Vonn’s spent slicing up the world’s ski slopes, she can’t reiterate enough how much she hates, hates, hates the cold. During our GENLUX Two-Word Interview, the now-retired queen of Alpine skiing shares about her fears, her love for speed, and how, if anyone deserves a Ben and Jerry’s ice cream sponsorship deal, it’s her.

Your GPS? I’m in Utah in the mountains. As much as I love the mountains, I don’t really like the cold, so I have a house here, and my main residence is in Miami and I have a place in Los Angeles.

You’re wearing? I’m in my Project Rock sweatsuit. It’s cold here today, so I have thick socks on. Your breakfast? Just had some oatmeal with a banana, and some tea and honey.

Childhood bullying? I’m from Minnesota, so the movie Fargo ruined my life. When I was 12, we moved from Minnesota to Colorado, and as soon as Fargo came out, kids teased me about my accent. I was a nerd with braces, a perm, and bangs. It wasn’t a great combination.

Blossoming age? I think I’m still blossoming. I’m still a nerd, and I still see myself as the same person as when I was a kid. I don’t think I’m necessarily cool; I’m just me.

Childhood hero? Picabo Street. When I was nine, I waited in line for three hours at a ski shop in Minnesota to meet her. Everyone in the mid-west came to that signing. She’s one of the reasons I wanted to be an Olympian. I idolized her and still have her signed poster hanging in my room. My dad reframed it in a nice beautiful frame. Everything came full circle when I co-directed and produced her documentary with Frank Marshall that was on Peacock. That was pretty cool. When I was 17, I was on the 2002 Olympics team with her at Salt Lake. She was larger than life and really gave me something to aspire to because ski racing wasn’t on TV, and there weren’t a lot of females to look up to.

Biggest fear? I don’t get afraid of much, but I’m scared of critters like centipedes and creepy crawlers. I’m not down with that. Fear of not being good enough.

Your passion? My passion is challenging myself and helping others. I’ve always liked to push myself and try to be better every day. At the same time, I like it to be for a purpose. I try to balance everything I do and make sure it benefits others. If you’re successful, it doesn’t matter unless you are helping others along the way.

Any pets? I’m the crazy dog lady. I have three: Leo, a Boxer American Staffordshire terrier mix; a Belgian Melanois named Jade; and a King Charles named Lucy, who has traveled the world and has two passports. She has an Italian and German passport.

Your charities? In 2015, I started my own foundation that helps empower underprivileged girls. Right now, we are focusing on our scholarship program. My mother has ALS, so I’m partnering with ALS organizations. I also give to animal charities and Veteran organizations. [Sadly, after this interview, Lindsey’s mom, Linda Krohn, passed away one year after her ALS diagnosis.]

Kindness trait? I have a bit of naïveté that I’ve not outgrown. I think people are inherently good, and I always want to see the best in people. I got that from my mother. She’ll get a bad deal somewhere and thank them for it. She’s always kind, no matter what. So I have a bit of that in me. There’s a lot of me that’s very mature, too.

Any hobbies? My hobbies are anything sports related. I retired from skiing, so now it’s my hobby. I enjoy anything outdoor

and active, like mountain biking, wake surfing, or kiteboarding.

Friendly competition? I usually let my friends ski ahead of me, and I’ll catch up to them when they’re almost at the bottom. I can’t go as fast as I used to because I’d get my pass pulled, but I go fast enough to scratch the edge.

Speed demon? I’m a thrill seeker, risk-taker, and adrenaline junkie, and I don’t do anything slowly. I like pushing myself. I got my Landrover Sport to limit my speeding tickets, but I have a Jag S type, so that’s where I get my thrills. I drive subdued in the US but not in Europe, where there’s no speed limit.

Speeding tickets? In Europe, skiing is one of the most popular sports next to soccer. So I can generally give an autograph, and they’re happy.

Binge-watching? I’ve been watching this new show, Suspicion, with Uma Thurman. And Blackbird on HBO. I need a serious binge situation, so I’m frustrated when I have to wait from week to week. I need more of a murder mystery, and I like it when crimes get solved. Makes it seem like the world went wrong but is now right.

Sweet dreams? Depends. When I was racing, I had dreams about my races. Sometimes I would win; other times, I would crash. I would fall asleep visualizing my race course, and if I made a mistake, I would stop and start over again until I eventually had a perfect run. The goal is to dream about winning.

Everyday style? I like to be understated, classy, and with a bit of edge. I love Gucci, Tom Ford, and Sally LaPointe makes

classy but edgy things. I like a lot of up-and-coming smaller brands, too.

Skiwear collabs? I’ve been using HEAD skis since 2009, and I’ve been working on my HEAD Legacy line for three seasons. When I first started collaborating with Roman Stepek, I knew it would be a great partnership because we were on the same page with our vision and style—classic with a little retro collection plus amazing technology and technical components. As I said, I hate the cold and hate being cold, so warmth was my number one goal. The line is incredibly high-performing skiwear that’s also incredibly chic.

Guilty pleasure? Ice cream. I like Ben and Jerry’s way too much. I’ve been such a loyal customer for so long that they should sponsor me. Half-baked is my favorite. The Tonight Dough with Jimmy Fallon is pretty good.

Favorite getaway? Home is my favorite getaway. It’s my happy place. I don’t spend much money on many things, but my home is my sanctuary. I love having quiet time with my family and dogs. Nothing better.

Biggest worry? Not being good enough. It’s what pushed me to always strive to be better. Never one to rest on what I’ve already achieved. Big or small—I strive to be better.

Fashion faves? Winter jackets from my ski gear to Gucci and Prada wool coats. I’ve spent most of my life in Winter so as you can imagine I have quite a collection of jackets.

Fur stance? I used to buy fur because I hate being cold, but now, I don’t buy it. I still

have pieces that I purchased ten years ago. I’m an animal lover and there are so many great faux fur options—it’s unnecessary. At HEAD, we developed a lot of amazing, super cozy faux fur vests.

Shoe closet? I have a wide mix of boots. I’ve got some cool Gucci boots and Prada military boots. A billion pairs of Under Armour who I collab with on Project Rock. Around the house, I hate being cold, so I wear thick wool socks combined with my UGG slippers. I have all different kinds of slippers.

Skincare faves? I’m working on my own skincare line that I’m coming out with soon.

Any collections? I’ve been traveling to Europe since I was nine, so I would collect spoons for my grandmother. Now, I collect coffee mugs and beer steins. I did a Harvard business class, so I got a coffee mug to remind me of that experience.

Harvard studies? Yes, I did an in-person, case-study class on entertainment, business, music, and sports taught by our amazing professor, Anita Elberse. I’d heard of other athletes who’d taken the course, so I signed

up. I filled out the application and got accepted. One of the coolest things I’ve ever done. I made great friendships and connections. We had case studies and came up with different opinions from the same case. It changed the way I think about things. There were students from music and entertainment to athletes like Michael Strahan, Chris Bosh, and Andy Roddick. So there was a great mix of people whose opinions opened my mind to different thinking. Now we have reunions each year.

Spiritual journey? I’m on a journey of exploration. Since retiring, I was quite depressed and needed to find out who I was without skiing. I know it wasn’t who I was, but my identity was so intertwined with skiing, so it was hard for me to get past it. So I wrote my memoir, Rise. To walk through my life and process everything was very therapeutic. I took about a year and a half to find my way with a good therapist and write my memoir. I’m great now and happy. I’ve come a long way

Self advice? To my younger me, I’d share it’s important to have

life experiences and make mistakes. Sure, if I look back, would I change anything? Maybe. But I needed to go through these experiences to be who I am. At the same time, many of the things I experienced were not easy and painful—both physically and mentally and in my personal life. It taught me a lot about myself, how strong I am, and what I’m capable of, so I wouldn’t give myself advice because it would ruin the journey.

Aches, pains? I don’t think the article is long enough for that. My knees give me the biggest struggle. I’ve had nine surgeries, and my right knee is bone on bone. I had surgery in April, so I’m waiting for the right moment to get a knee replacement. It’s like whack-a-mole. What’s the problem today, and how do I fix it

What’s next? I don’t know, and that’s what’s exciting. I live my life to the fullest every day. I have so many things in business and life, so I’m excited about the opportunity to give it my best, and we’ll see what happens. I also appreciate you putting me on the cover, so thank you.

“I used to buy fur because I hate being cold, but now, I don’t buy it... I’m an animal lover and there are so many great faux fur options— it’s unnecessary.

Alas, Vivienne Westwood has left the world that she manificently dressed for over 50 years. Reformer and activist, designer, and maverick, she crossed our boundaries and questioned our sensibilities.

From Cheshire, Westwood was fiery and British to the core, embracing what we do best. I loved her rude language, brusque and abrupt— she stood stoutly by her causes and her corsets. I tried copying her style without much success. She designed clothes in taffeta, tweed, and tartan. A northern lass, she did not stand for nonsense or waste, and apparently lived in the same council house all her life—this could be wrong, of course—but that was her reputation. “She reused her bath water and was sparing with lavatory flush,” her hubby Andreas Kronthaler once told me in a witty, teasing way.

Vivienne acknowledged history, idolizing the 18th Century, and along with Malcolm McLaren, helped usher in the 70s punk rock era through their boutique, SEX. Her jackets nipped in our waists and pushed up our breasts. Her skirts made our legs look longer (and a gust of wind would embarrass most people – but not Vivienne). Last summer we had a picnic together in Parliament Square to celebrate Julien Assange’s birthday. Never one to shy away from shock value: She put her whole hand into a cake and covered her face with icing. Last March, she made a stunning dress for Stella, Julian’s new wife. Westwood was a rebel on a mission and cared deeply for the environment. The women who wore her clothes best include Tracey Emin, Stella, Jerry Hall, Sera Hersham-Loftus, and Phoebe Saatchi. I have a favourite corset and skirt, a trouser suit, and a ball gown—none of which I will ever give away. They will stay in my wardrobe. The last time I saw her, she was riding her bike alongside Andreas down Kings Road. May she forever rest in peace. G

THESE ARE A FEW....

of my favorite belts! The wide Valentino belt comes in so many great flavors! They're reversible, too, so you have two colors to play with, and adding this elegant belt to any outfit can bring it from Wham to ZHAM! I was running late to a party and could not find a fabulous mini- skirt in my closet to complete my ensemble. I finally found what I believe was a VERY inexpensive (what looked like satin... but pre y sure it was some polyester nightmare that was gi ed to me years ago). But add that Valentino belt to the waist... and viola!

My li le inexpensive skirt looked like a million bucks... with compliments to match all night! Valentino wide calfskin belt, $1050, valentino.com

SERIOUSLY, I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT...

BEING IN GLOVE!

So I ordered a bunch of items from one of those really famous sister's clothing lines... and in my order were several pairs of opera-length gloves... or what were supposed to be opera-length gloves (theirs were much shorter than the traditional operalength). So besides returning most of the items in my order... the gloves went back as well. In walks AMAZON (I SERIOUSLY CANNOT BELIEVE I AM SPILLING ONE OF MY BIGGEST SECRETS) at less than half the price of any fabulous designer. And... when Amazon says opera length...they mean opera length!! Well, there you go... secret's out, and you, my beautiful friends, can now buy one of the ho est trends for Winter 2022/23 on Amazon. Check out the nylon gloves for spring in many colors and lengths, and be the star of the show!! Just pop in the search bar.... your color+length+material+gloves and see what fabulousness pops up!! I know you will thank me for spilling one of my most fabulous secrets!! amazon.com

A GOLD BAG OF CRISPS!

I love the shape of this Italian-made Anya Hindmarch polished golden-brass clutch in the form of a bag of potato chips. It has a removable chain shoulder strap, push-lock closure, and suede lining. Let's get crunchy in 2023!!

HAPPIEST NEW YEAR’S SECRETS TO YOU!!

Anya Hindmarch golden clutch, $2100, bergdorfgoodman.com

Here is another hot tip for 2023 and one of my biggest and newest secrets! I ordered on a whim... (again o Amazon... and I am absolutely not sponsored by Amazon) a product called Peruvian Gold. An inexpensive healing balm that I have been slathering on my face before bed and waking up to more compliments on my skin than I have had in a very long time. This almost vaseline-type product drenches my face and neck in moisture while I sleep. My big worry was that I would wake up with breakouts from the thick and greasy consistency. To my pleasant surprise, my skin was clearer than when I went to sleep. No petroleum or mineral oil to clog pores, and 100% plant-based makes this truly healing balm a must-have in your beauty arsenal!! Peruvian Gold, $35, amazon.com

BEAUTY WINTER

Beauty around the Eye of the

Beholder

The skin around our eyes is precious and deserves extra attention because it’s the first area showing the telltale signs of aging. Treating this area with only the best products helps keep the skin in tip-top shape. My wish for every GENLUX reader is to keep the area around their eyes looking and feeling beautiful. Here are some of my favorite must-have skin care products. - Ninka B - GENLUX

SAY BYE-BYE TO PUFFY EYES ...AND DARK CIRCLES

Various factors, including lack of sleep, allergies, dehydration, the natural aging process, genetics, medications, and lifestyle choices, can cause puffy eyes and dark circles. Getting plenty of sleep and staying hydrated is equally important as using top-performing products to help alleviate those pesky problems. Extend your eyes’ youthful look and vitality with Sircuit Skin WHITE

OUT + Daily under eye crème is supercharged with three active peptide molecules to decrease puffiness. It camouflages and diminishes the appearance of shadows with color-correcting diamond core particles. Ninka B. recommends: SircuitSkin WHITE OUT+ daily under eye care, $75, sircuitskin.com

RETINOL EYE CRÈME

Retinol is a form of vitamin A commonly used to improve our skin’s appearance and glow. It works by increasing cell turnover, which helps improve the texture and tone of our skin. Retinol stimulates collagen production, which reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps to repair damaged skin and prevents new wrinkles from forming. If you’re trying to prevent and correct fine lines around the eyes, ZO Skin Health Intense Eye Crème will work wonders for you.

Ninka B. recommends: ZO Skin Health Intense Eye Crème, $130, zoskinhealth.com

WAKE UP REFRESHED

We all love a good mask, don’t we? Especially when we can apply it at night and wake up more radiant. Treat the skin around your eyes three times a week with RéVive Revitalizing Eye Mask. Once you discover this treasure, you won’t want to live without it. And lucky for us, the concentrated eye mask is for all skin types. It works by using hyaluronic filling spheres to firm and diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. And probiotics provide an energized appearance to the eye area while also soothing and protecting the delicate skin. Apply it under your eyes on cleansed skin and wake

up with well-rested radiance.

Ninka B. recommends: RéVive Masque Des Yeux Revitalizing Eye Mask, $200, neimanmarcus.com

SOOTHING TREAT

Patches can work miracles when your skin feels extra dry and aggravated due to environmental stressors, allergies, or dehydration. I reach for cooling, and soothing under-eye patches such as Knesko Rose Quartz Antioxidant Eye Mask infused with the Rose Quartz Gemstone and antioxidant complex with Licorice Root, Grape Seed, and Vitamin C (so you know it’s good). It’s an ideal treatment to get through even the harshest winter.

Ninka B. recommends: Knesko Rose Quartz Antioxidant 6 Treatment Eye Mask Kit, $50, saksfi havenue.com

Don’t forget, beauty exists in the mind that observes it—Be beautiful, my lovelies! I will see you in the next GENLUX. Best wishes, aesthetician advisor Ninka B @ninkabskin

It’s safe to say that no other 35mm Kodachrome photo is more emblematic of the early ‘70s Palm Springs lifestyle by high society photographer Slim Aarons. At the center of this moment are its royal subjects: Nelda Linsk, the chic desert socialite who, along with hubby Joseph Linsk, owned the iconic Kaufmann House residence—Richard Neutra’s masterpiece of mid-century modern architecture—and the photo’s location; and Helen Dzo Dzo, the impeccably coiffed and bare-midriffwhite-lace-outfit-wearing beauty chatting opposite Nelda. Approaching the duo with a cocktail in hand and in heels (of course) is actress Lita Baron. Proving that photos often have more to do with serendipity and fairy dust than expensive and carefully planned productions, let’s rewind to the hours before the shoot, as told by Nelda.

“Slim called to say he was in Palm Springs and that he wanted to do some swimming pool shots. So I said, okay, come on over. He said, ‘Call some of your friends, and we’ll make it very casual.’ Slim arrived with only a tripod and a camera. There were no assistants, no makeup artists, and no hair stylists. The whole shoot only took about an hour. Years later, Slim phoned and asked for my thoughts on why this photo became so famous. And I said, ‘Well, because I’m in it.’”

Now as elegant and striking as ever, we take Nelda back to the scene of the time when Slim Aarons captured the zeitgeist of Plam Springs life in a split second.

New You Resolution HOME+GARDENGENLUX

We can thank the holidays for those few extra pounds, dull skin, and a taxed liver! It’s time to reboot and refresh the ol’ immune system, and a New Year Juice Cleanse can be the answer to ge ing back on track!

JUICE BOOST!

After consuming all the delicious—but fatty—sugary, and unhealthy foods, our guts will need a reset. Raw fruit and vegetable juice dramatically reduces daily gut stress, and a juice cleanse helps the body heal, detox, and recharge. You’ll get needed vitamins, phytonutrients, and antioxidants in an easily absorbable form. Your cells will supercharge with nutrition and re-energize! Fresh juices and homemade smoothies are a great way to fuel the body and ensure overall health and wellness.

GO SHORT, NOT LONG!

Three days is the perfect amount of time for a juice cleanse. Fasting for one to three weeks is too lengthy and unhealthy long-term. One to three days is enough time to reset your system without cutting out essential nutrients such as protein and healthy fats. Drink fresh juice or smoothies every few hours during the day of your juice cleanse.

KEEP IT FRESH

Work with seasonally available produce or, better yet, what’s growing in your garden. Kale, watercress, leafy greens, beet

greens, spinach, and celery are available, as are carrots, beets, radishes, and fennel. Add a little tang and sweetness with seasonal apples, pears, kiwis, lemons, limes, and oranges.

To add a creamy texture, try avocados and bananas in your smoothies. Use almond milk, a great source of calcium and vitamin E. Cucumbers are great for adding liquid to green juices. They’re out of season, but you’ll still find them in your grocery store.

SPICE IT UP!

Spice up your overall health with these in your juices and smoothies:

Cinnamon - contains substances that work as antioxidants to protect cells against damage caused by harmful free radicals.

Cayenne - helps relieve aches and soreness, improves circulation, heart-health and helps fight prostate cancer and ulcers. Cumin - can help lower blood glucose levels and help kill bacteria linked with stomach ulcers. Black cumin can help reduce inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

Turmeric - part of the ginger family. It has powerful antiinflammatory effects and is a powerful antioxidant. Turmeric has curcumin in it, which absorbs poorly into the bloodstream, so adding black pepper helps with its absorption.

Black Pepper - is said to have potent antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. Helps improve cholesterol levels, blood sugar control, and brain and gut health.

Ginger – has anti-inflammatory properties that help relieve

cough and congestion. It is also known to minimize discomfort from arthritis.

ADD SUPER FOODS!

Juicing reboots your immune system. But guess what? These superfoods boost the nutrients in your juice even more:

Apple Cider Vinegar - helps reduce the appetite, aids in weight loss, improves digestion, promotes gut and cardiovascular health, and reduces inflammation and allergies.

Cacao – adds a chocolate flavor to your smoothie recipes while increasing their nutritional value. Great for inflammation, preventing oxidative stress, and blood pressure regulation.

Chia Seeds – high in omega-3 fatty acid and fiber content. Helpful for weight loss as they support satiety and appetite control.

Maca - a root that’s possibly helpful in sperm health in men, improves sexual desire, supports energy production, and improves mood.

Spirulina – great for allergies, immunity, improved gut flora, cholesterol, and energy, and helps protect the liver from damage.

Wheatgrass - helpful for nutrient content. Helps support energy levels and helps supports blood health, tissue healing, and immune health.

KELLY’S JUICING TIPS

1. Make a full day’s worth of juice at the beginning or end of the day. Get the most out of the nutrients by consuming your juice soon after juicing.

2. Start with more watery ingredients first so you can get a sense of how much juice you’re ending up with—then add the lighter, leafier stuff.

3. Roll your leafy greens to help them pass through your juicer’s blades and mesh plates.

4. Use the stalks and woodier parts of the greens; they’re full of nutrients. Citrus fruits cut through the “grassy” taste of some green juices.

5. Experiment to find the best combination of ingredients for your juice.

BREVILLE® THE 3X BLUICER™ JUICER BLENDER COMBO, $299.99, BED BATH AND BEYOND

NO MORE HUNGER PANGS

Light snacks like vegetable broth, carrots, celery, a salad, or a piece of fruit will help with your hunger. If needed, you can modify a juice fast with a salad each day for lunch or dinner.

POST CLEANSE

Gradually add foods back into your diet over the next several days. Whole foods are best—no processed food! Incorporate lots of fruits and veggies. Try to work two servings of fruit and three to five servings of vegetables into your meals daily.

TYPES OF JUICERS AND BLENDERS

Masticating Juicers are the same as cold press juicers or slow press juicers—they don’t add heat which ruins nutrients. Masticating juicers are better than centrifugal juicers with their slow and steady process, and it extracts more minerals and enzymes and often more juice while keeping it cool. Centrifugal Juicers chop the greens and

spin them at a high speed to whip the juice from the hard material. This process can deplete the liquid of some nutrients, and the juice can heat up slightly due to the spinning speed.

Whole Food Juicers use a high-powered blender to make whole fruit and vegetable smoothies. They keep a lot of valuable dietary fiber that other conventional juicers lack. Whole food juicing aids digestion, helps you feel full, and balances blood sugar. Juicer-Blender Combo can both blend and juice and can grind, pulp, liquefy, chop, crush, and more.

The New Year is here, so start it with the best of intentions by cleansing our way back to health, and Jan 26, 2023, happens to be “National Green Juice Day.” Let’s all make a New Year’s resolution to reboot, refresh, detox, and commit to a 3-day raw juice cleanse for 2023! I’m in…how about you?

The Time has Come

AN INNOVATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILM EXHIBITION, NOTANOTHERSECOND, BRINGS LGBT+ SENIORS’ STORIES TO LIFE

Ithink in our world nowadays, there’s a lack of humanity,” proclaims award-winning German photographer Karsten Thormaehlen. “I think people don’t care enough for each other.”

But art is perhaps a remedy. Thormaehlen’s latest portraits for the Not Another Second exhibition are an introspective and interactive experience focused on the stories of LGBT+ elders who refused to spend another second hiding who they really are. Their stories could perhaps build a bridge between ignorance and acceptance, fear and hope, shame and pride. Above all, they may help people connect.

As Thormaehlen elaborates on notanothersecond.com, “[People] don’t care for each other’s lives, you know, they don’t care for each other’s histories and the personal stories, and this is what we try to bring out not only with the photograph but also with the interviews. Some of the people I photographed were hiding half of their lives or even longer.”

The interviews span a range of genders, races, and ethnicities of LGBT+ seniors ranging from their late sixties to mid-eighties but perhaps the most interesting — and poignant — statistic is their personal “number of years lost.” For Paul Barby, the first openly gay man to run for U.S. Congress, that number is 61, meaning Barby didn’t come out until he was 61 years old. That equals roughly 1,923,696,000 seconds.

Barby’s story is one of 12 told in Not Another Second, which is available free to the public with a reservation. It’s appropriately housed in the Art Pavilion at The Watermark at Westwood Village, Los Angeles’s newest and most innovative senior living community.

Like the living community, the exhibition also utilizes modern

technology. The interviews are cleverly masqueraded as portraits. It isn’t until the viewer approaches the portrait with their smartphone to scan the QR code that it suddenly comes alive as a video. This is done using Augmented Reality technology through Kaleida Studio and their app. This allows the viewer to experience traditional one-on-one storytelling in a completely new and unique way.

These stories come from activists present at the Stonewall Uprising to closeted naval officers to an Anti-Vietnam War demonstrator. Their stories are about America as much as they are about themselves. Their hope is to inspire future generations to spend each and every second as their authentic selves in all the ways they couldn’t in their youth.

“Older people are good to listen to and to learn from,” Thormaehlen surmises of his current project. “And this is what young people have to understand, because young people don’t have the life experience that a 70-, 80-year-old person has. That’s something you just cannot find clicking the internet. You need to see, and be, and share with these people, their stories.” G

You can see, be and share these stories every Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday from January 28, 2023 through June 29, 2023 at the Art Pavilion at The Watermark at Westwood Village, 947 Tiverton Avenue, Los Angeles. Reservations are required and free. For more information and reservations visit notanothersecond.com.
