STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE
I finally binge-watched Inventing Anna on Netflix. The bizzaro story of a young Russian girl posing as a German trust-fund kid whose daddy—she claims—is about to unload a boatload of cash her way, but in the meantime, she needs just a few favors—you know—before he wires the money into her US account. She boldly cons her way into stays at posh hotels like La Mamounia, private clubs, and on private jets. But that’s only half the story. The rich and powerful get sucked into her vortex, and we wait patiently for the big-time bankers to greenlight her $40 million real estate deal. What’s more impressive is it’s a true story, well, with the clever disclaimer: “The whole story is completely true, except for the parts that are completely made up.” GENLUX decided to delve into the Netflix zeitgeist by building our own poor little rich girl fashion story, “Inventing Peyton” (p90), photographed by a shooter I’ve worked with since 2009, Tracey Morris. On the advice of brilliant stylist Catherine Crate, we tapped Vogue-and-Elle-fashion-editor-turned-stylist/photographer Inge Fonteyne for our story “Spring Mix” (p74), featuring lovely model Cameron Clark—repped by Industry Models, New York. I’m banking on Inge being back next issue.
Richest Families List. The truth is, Paula is, yes, financially set as co-owner of The Aspen Skiing Company, but she’s also a brilliant artist and sculptor. Her art and process are reflective, intelligent, and wonderfully executed. Yes, her recent Prada collaboration crosses over into commercialism, but she handled it with thought and contemplation. You can read more about her story in her own words, “Crown Jewels” (p114). Last but not least, Ron Contarsy and Seth Karecha’s photograph of gorgeous model Chantal Monaghan wearing this super chic Alexander McQueen dress earned our cover. A little about this statuesque life force is that she was born in Brisbane, Australia, started modeling at seven, and moved to New York at 18. Chantal’s been an ambassador for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation for the past five years. Check out her stunning fashion story, “Spring to Light” (p102). It’s important to acknowledge that while we are beyond blessed to live a life of freedom and wallow in fashion and beauty and the loving process of creating art, there is a force of destruction transpiring in Ukraine that we pray will end soon. G
Our usual suspects of creative geniuses carved their initials in this issue. New York photographers Marc Baptiste, Contarsy+Karecha, and Eric White swung the bat on our behalf. All crunched photographic home runs. In their dugouts were top stylists Mimi Lombardo (p46), Alison Hernon (p60), and Mindy Saad (p62), respectively. My go-to beauty shooter, Robert Lynden, killed it again. He is a master of light and shadow, and his photo feature, “Shadow Dancing” (p36), is crazy beautiful. After I sent it to the models’ agent, JF Alix at Industry Models, his all-caps reaction was validating and priceless: “THESE ARE SOOO FABULOUS! LOVE LOVE LOVE ♥.” Admittedly, I tend to be critical about works by newer contemporary artists—particularly the jaded, wealthy ones who’ve never suffered for their craft. Can we really trust the passion of an artist who hasn’t dined on Top Ramen for months on end or whose currency for a roof over their head has never involved pimping their artwork? So when I was introduced to Paula Crown’s works, it was beneficial that I wasn’t aware of her family being #34 on the Forbes

Meet Paula Crown, the stylish artist and co-owner of the Aspen Skiing Company, whose holdings include The Little Nell (Aspen's only five-star hotel). Paula is a free-thinking alchemist who creates brilliant paintings, sculptures, and videos that stimulate our social consciousness and connectiveness. We caught up with Paula by phone from her California desert studio to answer our GENLUX Two-Word interview regarding art, life, and charity. —SK
GPS location? I am in this former retail store on El Paseo in Palm Desert. The doors are open, and I'm considering different moves with the artworks in front of me. My dog, a white Coton, is right here asleep by my side. My fabulous painting partner is in the next room with her puppy, and I'm looking at reflections from a local installation. Your background? I was born in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Art started when I was three or four, painting the walls or taking my dad's records and putting them on the record player and scratching them with the needle to make patterns. Exploration has always been part of my instinct and identity. College days? I went to Duke to play golf at the amateur level and continued my art path. First gig? I got away from art and went to work on Wall Street because that's a natural connection . . . not. I worked in finance, real estate, buildings, and plans. I never realized until I was older that that was something I innately had—seeing dimensionally. Family life? I moved to Chicago, got married, and had four kids. Got back to my art as I was writing thank-you notes. It sounds strange, but making space to think and draw got me back into my native language. I started retaking art courses, where I felt nourished and aligned. I went to the Art Institute and graduated in 2012 with my master's in painting and drawing. Everyday process? During Covid, I went back to something called my six-pack, which has nothing to do with abs or beer. It's those six things I have to do every day: Trying to get good sleep, eating healthy, meditating, exercising, connecting with family and friends, and making art.
Fashion style? I have a pretty classic style with a touch of the unexpected. I like a well-fitted white silk blouse with black jeans or pants and white sneakers. One way or another, either through color or embroidery, my clothing has some messaging. I am part of the canvas. My hair is purple or pink or light blue. Pandemic moment? I'm an introvert, so it's been good in many ways. It's been clarifying, and any potential FOMO has dissipated. It's been about going back to the philosophical rule called Occam's razor: taking the simplest competing theories over the more complex and looking at the essence of things. Let me see... how do I take the razor and make sure I'm prioritizing and telling a story about what's really important? Recent charity? God's Love We Deliver [an organization committed to improving the health and well-being of those living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other serious illnesses] delivered a fiberglass cow for me to paint for a huge charity installation and auction in New York. It's titled, Branded. Conceptually, it's how we brand people and how we brand ourselves. I'm a very happy fashion victim. It's also the study of how cows are affected by being branded. All of these things became part of the complexity of branding. The person who bought it is a luxe lover and has it in her backyard in Palm Beach. Side job? I'm co-owner of the Aspen Skiing Company, which started as a ski ops company that moved people up and down the mountain, and now has The Little Nell and Limelight at Snowmass hotels. A brand is a promise, and our promise can be delivered in many ways. Like a safer helmet or, thanks to the people at PRADA, a garment that's crazy
cool. All that is a really fun creative space. Prada project? Being a Prada fan girl, I have always admired Miucci's vision and her confidence of being totally herself and at the same time having the best artistry and best materials and best spaces designed by extraordinary architects—a synthesizer of all things beautiful. I had this Prada outfit that had this beautiful waterproof silky Gortex. So as we were launching and developing this new Aspen X brand, I explored the elements, like Prada, that we could bring together with other companies that set the standard for technical expertise: the softest, most functional, coolest, reflective, or sustainable. All of this led me to collaborate with Prada, who totally delivered. Art projects? The Solo cup project is titled, Jokester. There's so much beauty in the world that we don't see and amazing signs and points of view that we rarely pay attention to. I think that's a big crux of my work— navigation and finding where we are in ourselves. And how we locate ourselves with others. I'm watching someone hold the cup, and they're a little nervous. And there's another who smashed it on their forehead, and someone else is twisting it. It ties into my Aspen Maps project that all ties into the topologies of our minds. This is so exciting. I just went to my eye doctor, right, and he said I just looked at your Aspen Maps, and they look very much like the topologies of the cornea and retina. I don't know what to do with that, but it's cool. Favorite process? Most creatives enjoy leaning into that space where they're not distracted, fearful, or trepidatious about the next thing. I enjoy that space where I see how paint is reacting, color adjacency, or how something feels in my hand.
Charity culture? Yes, that goes without saying. That's part of our family values of sustainability and operating a carbon-neutral operating company. We make sure the trails aren't damaging to the world. There's a long list of things. [The Aspen Skiing Company Environment Foundation scores a commendable 90 out of 100 on charitynavigator.org] Your passion? That which gives nourishment. Leaning into that and then realizing I have by some randomness, chaos, and training, I have this thing that can add to the world's conversation. And that is a lucky place. Favorite word? There are two: "Atelic," which describes a process from Atalos, Greek for "without end," the idea of using our gifts and sharing them with others, and getting better at the things we are doing. The other word is "numinous," which implies a glowing internal light. It's hard to draw or show a picture of that one. Three blessings? I wouldn't know where to start. We can start with family. My husband and I have been together for 37 Valentine's Days. We have four children and one grandchild. Another is being able to pursue something that I love and add to the world somehow and be of service. The third is being connected with my inner alignment and sensorially attuned, aware, and present and having an element of health to experience the world. What's next? I just want quiet time and reduced distractions. I have my work projects involved in our ski companies and hospitality. My job is to work on consistent messaging and ask how to do it better and cooler and make someone smile. Even if they just stop—we've accomplished our goal to bring us back to the present. G

This is going to be a colorful spring! I can’t wait to wear my delicious yellow second-skin dress by Jitrois. So sexy too! Presented for the first time at the Spring-Summer ‘ 22 Ready-to-Wear show, the CHANEL 22 bag is the House’s latest bag imagined by Virginie Viard—and, one of my faves. Its name refers to both the year of its creation and a powerful symbol in CHANEL’s numerology: in 1922, N°22 was launched. And, I may add, my number as well. I was born on June 22, so I’ve always loved that number. Enjoy my colorful picks for this upcoming spring season. —Samia Arslane

I’m currenly at my home in London, where, at the moment, things are opening up, and everyone seems to be wearing the same thing: black puffer jackets, skinny jeans or leggings with trainers. Where has imaginative fashion gone? I would encourage everyone to find a special occasion and dress up. Let’s find a unique boutique to create and have fun! This week I visited the Bob Marley exhibition at The Saatchi Gallery with party planner Phillip Sallon and interior designer Sera Loftus, and I went dressed as a policewoman. It was an Instagramfriendly affair with instruments, Bob’s records, music, and you could literally play on swings. It was a very fashionable and glamorous crowd. Later that evening, we went to Saatchi Yates where I loved the colourful Manga-type cartoons by Sujin Lee—naive, but beautifully painted. It has been an arty-fartsy week indeed! My ongoing dog charity is The Whippet Rescue, which my mother and my aunt Joanna Russell set up. With lock-ups, people have bought many dogs, and sadly they cannot cope looking after them. Whippets are great dogs, and I intend to show mine at Great Britain’s best dog show. Last week, I went with my friend Nigel Daley to an exhibition of Francis Bacon: Man and Beast at The Royal Academy. Time has changed since 1949. In this exhibition, you see Bacon’s dark moods and his fascination with animals, his figures are hardly recognisable as either human or beast. Some were very disturbing. With the Oscars turning up, I need to fly to Los Angeles. I’ll bring my Moschino cape with teddy bear buttons and my jacket from Schiaparelli with hands attached to the sleeves. Schiaparelli is my latest fave. I guess I’ve always loved creatives and Bohemians. Life will hopefully open up to another world soon. Keep smiling. G

GENLUX 5 Reasons You Need Epidermal Growth Factors They say Spring showers bring May flowers, but what does that mean for your skin’s wellbeing? If you’ve been using retinoids, vitamin C serums, eye cream, and sunscreen, add EGF (Epidermal Growth Factors) to your beauty regimen for that ultimate picture-perfect glow! -Ninka B @ninkabskin Ninka B. Recommends
1. IT’S ONLY NATURAL
SkinMedica TNS Advanced+ Serum $295, dermstore.com
Growth factors are proteins naturally found and produced by our body. These proteins bind to receptors on cells, and that’s how cell communication happens. In other words, our skin is trying to tell us, “Hey! Time to create more collagen, don’t forget to produce elastin.” Unfortunately, as we age, this process slows down...but don’t fret; read on for better news.
Doctor Babor EGF Growth Factor Serum $49.95, us.babor.com
Bioeffect EGF Power Cream $215, net-a-porter.com
2. KUDOS TO SCIENCE
Scientists and skincare chemists are the real people we should thank. They’re responsible for the exciting improvement in the efficacy of topical medical-grade products containing growth factors. They’ve achieved this improvement by increasing their effectiveness on the cellular level. These products are one-of-a-kind because they help our skin produce collagen and elastin, the main element of bouncy, youthful skin!
3. ONE FOR ALL & ALL FOR ONE
The unique technology provides a powerful yet gentle effect that makes growth factors ideal for all skin types—even the most sensitive skin. That’s because these topical products energize our skin cells, strengthening skin and restoring the appearance of natural fullness and glow.
Sircuit Cosmeceuticals DREAMWEAVER Night Time Skin Repair with EGF $95, sircuitskin.com
5. BOTTOM LINE 4. PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS
As you may know, we shouldn’t use certain products together. However, that’s not the case with growth factors, they mix well with antioxidants such as vitamin C, and if you love a nightly application of retinol, they also pair well together, too. Indeed, chances are, growth-factor-containing products will improve your current morning and ZO Skin Health Growth evening skincare regimen. Factor Eye Serum
The benefits of regularly using serums with growth factors are noticeable. Studies have shown they help improve your skin’s dryness, irregular texture, dark spots, fine lines, and wrinkles. Growth factors can help if you notice the early signs of aging or if you are in “skin prevention” mode. In any case, I am confident you will enjoy using growth factors, and your skin will thank you for it.

She Sows Seeds in the Springtime
Halleluiah! Spring is here! Such an exciting time—especially if, like me, you’re a gardener. The earth comes to life with rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal and regrowth. By Kelly Emberg - The Model Gardener
Witness worms emerging from the ground on the last full moon of winter and the sun shifting its direction to the north as migrating birds follow its path. Deciduous shrubs and trees push out new growth, creating shade for those hot days to come. Longer days and increasing sunlight trigger birds to sing! Daffodils emerge and bloom, steering their heads in the light’s direction. Higher temperatures invoke you, your pets, and the animals around you to shed heavy coats.
IN MARCH March 20, 2022, marks the first day of spring.
Days and nights are approximately twelve hours long—the optimum time to start a garden and sow some seeds. If you are a first-time gardener or ready to plant for the new season ahead, you couldn’t have picked a better time to start. There is so much you can grow in your garden this month. The frost is gone, and the temperatures are optimum to plant and get out there and enjoy getting your hands dirty. Turn over your soil, add organic soil amendments, and start planting. Here are some TO-DOs: Consider plant herbs such as basil, mint, oregano, parsley, and rosemary. Except for basil, these herbs could eventually take over the rest of your garden. Put them in pots or in a place you don’t mind them spreading out. It’s time to get in a crop of quick-growing, cool-season vegetables from transplants, like broccoli, celery, collards, endive, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustard, and spinach. Plant lettuces for flavor, texture, and color. Varieties come in dark greens, light greens, reds,

bronzes, butterhead, loose-leaf, romaine, and crisphead. For a continuous harvest, replant again in early April. Choose heat-resistant, boltresistant varieties that are less likely to turn bitter when they mature during hotter weather. Beets, carrots, chard, radishes, and possibly turnips can be planted just about year-round. Plant them all from seed except the chard. Try the watermelon radish and dragon carrots, which are some of my favorites. TIP: When germinating seeds in the ground, you’ll have greater success if the seeds are covered with a thin layer of potting soil rather than a heavier soil. Make sure the soil stays damp but not soggy. The seeds will rot if they get too wet. If your soil is too dry, your seeds won’t be able to get through that crusty top layer of soil.
IN APRIL Start sowing seeds and putting in transplants
anytime this month. Right now, the soil is at a perfect temperature, and you will enjoy working outside in your garden. Here are some TO DOs: Continue to sow or transplant cool-season varieties, including asparagus, beets, carrots, celery, chard, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuces, summermaturing onions, the last peas, white potatoes, radishes, rhubarb, and spinach. It’s better to plant seeds for leafy greens instead of transplants. In late April, plant beans, cucumbers, eggplants, melons, peppers, squash, and tomatoes. Toward the end of this month is the absolute best time to plant tomatoes from transplants as long as the nights are not too cool. A crop planted now will produce throughout the summer.
Sow or transplant more herbs like anise, basil, borage, burnet, catnip, chervil, chives, cilantro, dill, fennel, lavender, marjoram, mint, oregano, rosemary, sage, savory, tarragon, and thyme. Perennial herbs can be used as droughttolerant, landscaping plants and are attractive. Add edible flowers to your garden for their foliage and bloom. Nasturtium leaves and flowers taste peppery. Squash blossoms have a cucumber flavor. Some marigolds and pansies can be tossed in a salad or a garnish for a meal. To protect your seedlings from pests and chilly nights, cover them with clear plastic water jugs or juice cartons with their bottoms cut off and caps off. TIP: If you’ve had hornworms on your tomato plants in the past, consider planting cherry tomatoes. Their skins are thicker and have a higher alkaloid content, which acts as a worm repellant. Celebrate spring and fill your garden with edible plants! We are so lucky to live in a climate that allows us to grow pretty much anything we want to. March and April are the best months to plant a variety of cool- and warm-season veggies. Your organic garden will provide food for you and yours through the end of summer and into the winter. It’s time to spring into action and start growing! Let’s go!
