A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Alumni and Friends, This fall semester at Georgetown College has been a whirlwind of activity filled with celebration and purpose.
My official inauguration ceremony as the first woman to serve as President in our 193-year history was both beautiful and humbling. Guest speakers from across the Commonwealth, including Governor Andy Beshear, took time out of their busy schedules to welcome me as President. I am forever grateful for the warmth of the support I have received from students, friends, family, colleagues, alumni, community leaders, and our Board of Trustees.
Bethany H. Langdon ’93 joined the Executive Cabinet in June as our new Vice President for Communications and Marketing. I love having a GC graduate to lead our marketing effort—she is living proof of the value of a GC education. She has a strong background working in the nonprofit sector in central Kentucky and brings new strategies and technological innovations that are already making an impact at the College.
Homecoming 2022 was a tremendous success, as hundreds of alumni flooded our campus and the football stadium. Seeing so many familiar faces and enjoying a day of football and fellowship was truly wonderful. Homecoming activities included the return of Songfest to a standing-room-only crowd, a diversity brunch with alumni from the ’80s, and the Distinguished Alumni Awards.
In this issue, you will read about three remarkable alumni and their successes. Former NFL football player Bruce McNorton ’82, who was presented with his Kentucky Pro Hall of Fame jacket at our home football opener. Dave Baker ’82 was inducted into the Kentucky Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2022. Baker earned his degree in political science but found his true calling in sports broadcasting while helping with sports commentating at GC. Oleg Turlac ’98 founded the Turlac Mission in 2004 and recently part of his mission work has been helping Ukrainian refugees in Prague.
We highlight athletic success, including achieving the 600th win in GC football program history! Our student-athletes are also winning in the classroom with 15 programs and 101 athletes named NAIA Scholars for the 2021-22 academic year. The academic success of our athletes is phenomenal, and as an educator this makes my heart very happy.
Lastly, I want to recognize the 125th anniversary of the Woman’s Association of Georgetown College. They continue a long tradition of encouraging and empowering women to further their education through scholarships and by building a strong network of women leaders.
I hope you enjoy this issue as you read about Georgetown College today and the path we are setting for our future.
With Gratitude,

Hall of Fame
CLASS OF 2022
The Hall of Fame was established in 1993 to honor outstanding alumni and friends who have made distinctive contributions to Georgetown College. This year we inducted four new members.
Bob and Roxann (Vaughn) Hieb
Bob and Roxann Hieb met at Georgetown College. Bob, an English major, graduated in 1961, and Roxann, a biology major, in 1963. Both were teachers for many years in Louisville. Bob developed a concrete business to supplement their income; it grew into a successful business, Hieb Concrete Products. He is the retired president of American Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Kentucky, a former director of River City Housing, and a working member of Habitat for Humanity. Bob served on the College’s Board of Trustees from 2012 to 2019. The Hiebs have been generous supporters of the College with a named townhouse in Rucker Village and are members of the Pawling Heritage Society.
Dr. Shien-Biau “S.B.” Woo
S.B. Woo received his Bachelor of Science, Summa Cum Laude, from Georgetown College in 1957 and Ph.D. in physics from Washington University in St. Louis in 1964. He was a professor of physics and a trustee of the University of Delaware. Woo was elected Lt. Governor of Delaware in 1985, and at that time it was the highest elected state office in the continental U.S. held by an Asian American. He later was an Institute Fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. A life-size picture of him is displayed in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. He is a founding member of the 80-20 Initiative, the nation’s largest Asian American Political Action Committee and serves as President of the 80-20 Educational Foundation.
Dr. Macy (Akel) Wyatt
Dr. Macy Wyatt graduated from the American University of Beirut and received a master’s degree in clinical psychology and later a doctorate in counseling and educational psychology from the University of Kentucky. She began teaching at Georgetown College in 1961 and became a Licensed Psychologist Professional counseling students, teaching psychology, and later chairing the department. Macy was instrumental in establishing the GC Counseling Center. After retiring in 1998, she continued to serve part-time by supervising the counseling staff and mentoring doctoral students. Her last year on staff was 2008 and the College awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2010. Wyatt received the Kentucky Psychological Association’s Distinguished CareerAward in 2012.
Congratulations to the newest Hall of Fame members!
Convocation 2022
Opening convocation at Georgetown College is a tradition nearly as old as our institution and is a great beginning to the school year, helping prepare students for the journey ahead. Provost Jonathan Sands Wise introduced new faculty (meet the new faculty on page 13 of GC Magazine), and President Rosemary Allen shared resources and information for a successful campus life experience. The convocation lecture was presented by Dr. Karyn McKenzie, Professor of Psychology, who shared a powerful message about the challenges and significance of a college degree in the 21st century. Below is an excerpt from Dr. McKenzie’s lecture.
“Less than a third of Americans have college degrees. Less than a quarter of Kentuckians have college degrees. There are many reasons the majority of people in our state, our country, and our world never graduate from college – and a big one is because it is so hard to earn a college degree. It requires so much energy, effort, time, money, and incredible amounts of persistence. Because you are working toward something extraordinary that will benefit you for the rest of your life. When you experience college stress, that does not mean you are not worthy, not good enough, that you don’t belong here, or that something is wrong with you. That stress simply means you’re doing something important and difficult that matters to you. If college degrees were easy to get, everyone would have one. So, the fact that you will have tough days is a gift – you are working toward something really significant.”

BRUCE MCNORTON '82 - KENTUCKY PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME
Bruce McNorton ’82 received his Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame jacket at halftime of Georgetown’s 52-7 win over Bluefield. As McNorton recalls it, Georgetown College was the only school to offer him an opportunity to play beyond high school.
“They gave me a chance to leave Florida, come to Kentucky, and see snow for the first time,” McNorton said. “I thank my coaches, my teammates, my friends, and everyone else who had a part in this journey.”
A 2000 GC Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee, McNorton played at Georgetown from 1978 to 1982 and still holds program records for number of kick returns and kick return yardage. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fourth round of the 1982 National Football League (NFL) Draft and remains the only Georgetown Tiger to be drafted by the NFL and only the second Tiger ever to play in the NFL. McNorton spent nine years with the Detroit Lions before finishing his football career with the Miami Dolphins in 1991. Later, he spent many years as a scout in the NFL, mostly with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bruce McNorton also received a 2022 Georgetown College Distinguished Alumni Award during Homecoming weekend.

GC SOCCER HOSTS FIRST SENSORY INCLUSION DAY
Our first Sensory Inclusion Day was held in conjunction with men’s and women’s soccer matches on October 23. The event was designed for children of all ages with autism, Down syndrome, or other intellectual/developmental disabilities to enjoy a day of soccer and fun with their families. Sports Information Director Jason Grefer spearheaded the event, in part for his daughter Delana.
“As a parent of a child on the autism spectrum, I wanted to create an event where my child and other children with sensory issues feel welcome and included,” said Grefer.
Children joined the players on the field for starting lineups and at the end of the men’s match to score a goal. In addition, GC partnered with New Vista and the Down Syndrome Association of Central Kentucky to provide additional resources for families. All attendees walked away with an orange and black soccer scarf and a fidget toy. For Grefer, the event was a complete success.
“I am so happy with how the event turned out. Children were smiling and talking to the players. Parents thanked our volunteers and me for hosting this event. It means the world to me to give back to the neuro-diverse community like this.”
NEW HEAD COACHES LEAD ATHLETICS
The Tigers named three new head coaches for spring sports: Michael Cunningham (men’s and women’s tennis), Randy Guite (baseball), and Bianca Rojas (lacrosse).
MICHAEL CUNNINGHAM ’02 has served as assistant tennis coach since 2011. He played tennis at GC from 1998-2002, graduating with his Bachelor of Science in economics. Cunningham was the winningest player in GC history, playing on three teams that made the NAIA National Championships, and he won the doubles Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s regional tournament in 2000 with Edgar Saborit '02.
RANDY GUITE ’12 has been an assistant coach since 2012 and will be taking the helm of the baseball team. Guite first came to GC as a player in 2011, earning All Mid-South honors in 2012 by carrying a .357 batting average. In nine years on staff, Guite helped lead the Tigers to 283 wins, three appearances in the NAIA National Tournament and an appearance in the 2014 NAIA World Series.
BIANCA ROJAS comes to GC from Point University, where she served as head coach for the last three years. Rojas led her team into the top 15 of the NAIA rankings, while also coaching multiple players to All-Conference honors. As a student-athlete at Shorter University, Rojas ranks fifth in Shorter lacrosse history with 107 career goals, third with 37 assists and sixth with 144 career points.

Oxford University’s Dr. Lynn Robson Delivers 25th McCandless Lecture
Dr. Lynn Robson, Tutorial Fellow in English Literature and Dean of Regent’s Park College at Oxford University in England, delivered the 25th McCandless Lecture at Georgetown College in September.
The McCandless Lecture was established in 1998 by a gift from O. "Mac" Carlysle ’38 and June Daves McCandless ’37. The lecture is also part of a long-term relationship started in 1998 between Regent’s Park College and Georgetown College to better fulfill their respective missions.
The Oxford Tutorial Program has become the keystone program, allowing up to 15 GC students to enroll at Oxford University as visiting students, studying in a variety of disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, and mathematics. Over 250 Georgetown students have completed some portion of their undergraduate work at Oxford University.
“We hope Georgetown College students will continue to take advantage of this program,” said Dr. Robson of Regent’s Park College at Oxford University. “Oxford has a rich history and culture, and we always like to see students expand their minds through unique experiences. Visiting other countries and cultures opens up a whole new world.”
Manning Award Presented to Dr. Brad Hadaway
The 2022 John Walker Manning Distinguished Mentor and Teacher Award was presented to Dr. Brad Hadaway, Professor of Philosophy. The award recognizes faculty who have shown a commitment to Georgetown College by demonstrating excellence in teaching and by being involved in extracurricular activities with students.
“When the pandemic made it impossible for students to travel to Oxford, this individual went far above and beyond in trying to bring Oxford to Georgetown, not only through Zoom tutorials with Oxford faculty, but also by starting the new tradition of having a High Table event each spring for Oxford students and their tutors,” said Provost Jonathan Sands Wise. “Dr. Hadaway is known for his passion in the classroom as much as for his generous mentorship outside of it.”
Congratulations to Dr. Hadaway for receiving this prestigious award!
Inauguration of Dr. Rosemary A. Allen as 26th GC President
Georgetown College inaugurated Rosemary A. Allen, Ph.D., as the first woman president of the College in its 193-year history. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community leaders across the Commonwealth gathered at John L. Hill Chapel to witness the historic event on September 30. The ceremony capped off several days of inauguration events in honor of Dr. Allen, whose 38 years with the College led to this moment.
Dr. Allen spent her first 20 years as a member of the English faculty. In 2004, she became the first woman to serve as Chief Academic Officer when she was named Provost. In that role, she administered all academic program functions and served as the College’s liaison with its accreditor, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. The art exhibition, “WOMEN: Looking Through the Eyes of Women at Georgetown College,” was on display at the Ensor Learning Resource Center during inauguration week to celebrate the history of women at Georgetown College. The exhibit was created by Galleries Director/Curator Aaron Reynolds and his Curatorial Studies Class.
The College partnered with Country Boy Brewing, owned by GC alumni, to host a community event where President Allen got to catch up with alumni and friends from Scott County and beyond.
On the day before the inauguration, a willow oak was dedicated on Giddings Lawn honoring this historic inauguration. The tree will serve as a reminder of President Allen’s deep roots and longstanding commitment to GC. A special thanks to Jennifer (Lonsway) Wilson ’93, owner of Wilson Plant Company, for donating the tree. In the evening, GC welcomed back to campus former GC President M. Dwaine Greene, Ph.D., and surprised him with the unveiling of his official portrait painted by Professor of Art Dr. Boris Zakić.
The official inauguration ceremony was held on September 30 in the John L. Hill Chapel. Hundreds of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members were in attendance. Speakers included: Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear; President of the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities OJ Oleka; Alumni Board Chair Alan Redditt ’00; First Baptist Church Maddoxtown Pastor John Travis ’79; Board of Trustees Chair Robert L. Mills ’67; Faculty Chair Cliff Wargelin; and Student Government Association President Riley Davis. The Presidential Chain of Office was placed on President Allen by Board of Trustees members Granetta Blevins ’80 and Michelle Pedigo ’90, making her the 26th President of Georgetown College
Reverend Molly Shoulta Tucker ’13, pastor of Ridgewood Baptist Church in Louisville, spoke at a special chapel service a few days before the inauguration with a message of renewal and hope for the future of Georgetown College under President Allen’s leadership. The service included Dr. Allen’s favorite hymns by the GC chorale and musical accompaniment by pianist Glenna Metcalfe ’85 and flutist Elizabeth King.Watch the
Homecoming weekend was a flurry of activity this year on the GC campus. Our community gathered to celebrate the historic inauguration of President Rosemary Allen, Songfest performances packed Hill Chapel with a standing-room-only crowd, and fall delivered perfect football weather. Georgetown also hosted a Diversity Brunch with alumni from the 1980s and the annual Distinguished Alumni Awards.
Songfest was back this year with a Y2K theme for songs and skits set in the 2000s. The award for Most Georgetown Spirit went to Sigma Kappa, while Most Musical went to President’s House Association. In addition, Phi Kappa Tau took home the prize for the Most Comedic, and Tiger Pride Entertainment won for Best Choreography. Third Place Overall went to Phi Kappa Tau, Second Place to Sigma Kappa, and Kappa Delta was voted the Overall Winner and Most Original. The football game was a battle of two undefeated teams, GC versus Bethel. Although GC was not victorious in the game, we had a huge crowd with special tailgates, supportive alumni, and plenty of cheering fans.
HOMECOMING 2022
At halftime of the game, President Allen crowned Berk Watts and Abby Rich the Homecoming King and Queen.
Thanks to everyone who WENT BIG and CAME HOME to Homecoming 2022!
Bethany H. Langdon ’93 Brings Marketing Expertise to Alma Mater
For alumna Bethany (Hornback) Langdon, accepting a position at Georgetown College was a homecoming. Langdon graduated in 1993 with her bachelor’s degree in philosophy and French with a minor in English. In June, she accepted the position of Vice President for Communications and Marketing. Langdon is delighted to work for the first woman president in GC history, Rosemary Allen, and join the College’s Executive Cabinet.
“I am honored to be working with President Allen, who was also my English professor,” says Langdon. “I am confident she, and the entire Executive Cabinet, are building a solid strategic plan for Georgetown’s future. Returning to GC has been an absolute joy. I have experienced first-hand the quality of the education we provide our students. This, alongside the lasting relationships fostered not only with fellow students but with professors, is part of what makes GC a very special place.”
Langdon has extensive experience leading marketing, communications, and public relations efforts in the nonprofit sector. For the past several years, she served as the Corporate Director of Marketing and Communications for New Vista, the largest community mental health center in Kentucky. Before that, she worked for University of Kentucky Federal Credit Union, YMCA of Central Kentucky, and Girl Scouts of the United States. Langdon currently serves as President of the Public Relations Society of America, Thoroughbred Chapter.
Through the years, Langdon has developed new brands, championed digital marketing, and designed more websites than she can count. As marketing trends continue to shift, she is adamant that GC embraces new technologies to meet students where they are today.
“Parents and students source information about higher education almost exclusively online. We are partnering with experts who understand the higher education landscape and can help Georgetown tell our unique story,” says Langdon. “We provide an open, caring, and rigorous educational experience where students receive personalized attention and support. Helping prospective students understand why the GC experience is like no other is paramount to our success. I’m honored to give life to the many amazing Georgetown stories.”
Woman’s Association of Georgetown College Celebrates 125 Years
In 1892, Georgetown College began admitting women. Five years later, a group of women established the Woman’s Association of Georgetown College (WAGC) to encourage young women to pursue their education and take on leadership roles.
The 125th anniversary year coincides with another historic celebration—the inauguration of the first woman President of Georgetown College, Dr. Rosemary Allen. President Allen has been a member of the WAGC for many years and was the featured speaker at the group’s April meeting. She shared stories about the empowering women who inspired her. One of these women was the late Dr. Gwen Curry, an English professor at GC and a longtime member of the WAGC. Dr. Curry always embraced the purpose of the WAGC by encouraging young women to attend Georgetown College, often with the help of a WAGC scholarship. She also cultivated true loyalty from alumnae,
former students, and friends. Likewise, Dr. Allen inspires women to see themselves as leaders in her new role as President.
“I have worked here for over 38 years, serving in various leadership positions,” said Dr. Allen. “My hope for the future is that seeing a woman as President of Georgetown College will not be unusual.”
The Woman’s Association of Georgetown College continues to foster the interests of Georgetown College and acknowledges and salutes female students with high academic achievement. The motto, “not for ourselves but for others” is demonstrated by awarding several scholarships each year to help with financial needs. The WAGC welcomes new members. For more information, contact Tricia Gaetz by email at patricia_gaetz@georgetowncollege.edu.
Oleg Turlac ’98 founded the Turlac Mission in 2004 to preach the gospel, train church leaders, and help women at risk of human trafficking. Turlac serves persecuted believers in Eastern Europe and provides relief for refugees and individuals with disabilities. His mission has recently focused on helping Ukrainian refugees in Prague.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine forced thousands of families to flee from combat, shelling, and missile attacks. Turlac recently visited Prague to help displaced Ukrainians with basic needs like food, clothing, and shelter.
“While the refugees receive small amounts of aid from various governments, it is not enough to rent space for living,” said Turlac. “After a few weeks of staying with hosts in Eastern Europe, many have to find more permanent accommodations.”
Turlac’s parents and grandparents were born in Ukraine, so he is able to speak Ukrainian and Russian with the refugees. His family connections also make the relief work more personal. Many of the refugees were grateful not only for the food but for giving them hope.
“One of the ladies I talked to, who barely escaped the Russian strike on the train station in Eastern Ukraine, said to me ‘thank you for coming and offering the word of hope in our misery! Thank you for helping me and my daughter survive. God cares for us.’ It was a privilege to help these dear people running away from the war.”
To help Ukrainian refugees, send a check to World Wide Word (designated to Turlac Mission - Ukraine Aid) and mail to World Wide Word, Attn: Turlac Mission Account, 24162 Rochester Lane, Aldie, Virginia, 20105.

Dave Baker '82 Inducted Into Kentucky Broadcasters Hall of Fame
Dave Baker '82 Inducted Into Kentucky Broadcasters Hall of Fame
In September, well-known broadcaster Dave Baker ’82 was inducted into the Kentucky Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame. Baker graduated from Georgetown College with his bachelor’s degree in political science. Baker sat down with GC Magazine to tell us about his big breaks and some lessons he learned along the way.
“When I got to Georgetown, the guys who had been announcing the basketball games graduated and Coach Reid allowed me to step in,” said Baker. “After that, I got an internship at WKYT that opened up new opportunities.”
The internship helped him land a full-time position at television station WKYT, and he found his calling as a broadcaster. He credits his success to being quick on his feet, managing deadlines well, and being available when people need him. More than anything, he encourages those seeking a career in television to be open to new possibilities.
“Broadcasting is a very challenging business, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. And there are opportunities in front of or behind the camera. So, it doesn’t matter where you start because opportunities will be there.”
Baker has spent most of his career with WKYT, celebrating 40 years with the Lexington station this year. In addition, Baker has worked for the Southeastern Conference for more than two decades, covering basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball. Now on the SEC Network Plus, Baker calls the action for UK soccer and softball. He has also been a part of Turner Sports “Team Casts” for the NCAA Final Four. Baker also got to call a few NAIA national championship games for Georgetown College, which he credits for helping him learn how to talk to people.
“I came from a small town in Ohio. I was the first person from my family to go to college, and I was a little afraid being away from home,” said Baker. “I joined Kappa Alpha, got involved with sports announcing, and just put myself out there. We all did life together, and many of the people I met at Georgetown College remain lifelong friends. I am blessed and proud to call Kentucky home.”
Baker currently resides in Frankfort with his wife, Donna. They have three daughters and three sons together. To see Baker in action, tune in for sports on WKYT 27 at 6:30 p.m. or listen to the “Countdown to Tip-Off” on the University of Kentucky’s radio network airing 90 minutes before each UK basketball game.

College can be intimidating, especially when moving from another state. When junior Riley Davis arrived at GC from Brighton, Indiana, she did not know anyone. However, Davis made friends quickly by getting involved in various organizations on campus.
“I have become passionate about many things, including Georgetown College. I am confident now, which has allowed me to be my true self in any situation,” said Davis.
Davis first learned about Georgetown through her dad, Robert Davis, a 1985 GC graduate, who encouraged her to get involved on campus. Davis became the President of the Student Government Association this year, allowing her to represent the student body at the inauguration of President Allen and sit next to Governor Andy Beshear during the ceremony. In addition, she runs cross country/track, participates in the pre-vet club, is a member of Kappa Delta, and works as a veterinarian assistant at Green Tree Animal Hospital. She was also accepted into Health Scholars and Science Honors programs.
“I am on a pre-vet track and will most likely apply to veterinarian schools next fall. I grew up around horses and am fascinated by the industry, but I am also passionate about livestock and wildlife. I am just really trying to seek out what God has planned for me.”
A new mural covers the walls of Anderson Hall thanks to the talents of Chan Riiny. Men’s Head Basketball Coach Chris Briggs encouraged Riiny to find a location on campus where his work could be shared.
“After showing Coach Briggs my work, he asked me if I could paint something on campus. As I looked at pictures of iconic moments and previous championships around Coach Briggs’ office, it gave me the motivation and the inspiration for the mural,” said Riiny.
Born in South Sudan, Riiny immigrated to the U.S. and is a resident of San Francisco. He learned about GC from basketball recruiters and plays forward on the team. In his sophomore year at GC, Riiny is majoring in business, with a minor in art to express his creative side.
“I took a painting class with Boris Zakić, and he taught me different painting and drawing techniques,” said Riiny. “From coaches to professors, there is a great support system here at Georgetown."
