LETTER FROM
Kathleen Editor
hat makes you feel fierce? This is what we pondered while discussing the central theme of this issue and, unsurprisingly, there were a lot of different answers, but they all boiled down to a few central things… First, it was predominately about overcoming stereotypes and society’s expectations. This ranged from embracing your natural beauty, to working in industries that aren’t typically seen as ‘women’s workplaces’. Though we’ve come a long way, and the working world has changed unrecognisably, there is still much to be achieved. Then, in terms of embracing who we are, doing the unthinkable or going against the grain, it’s all about celebrating what sets us apart and what makes us unique. In everything from the way we choose to wear our hair to the paths we carve for ourselves. So, what do we need to address for us all to feel fierce? This got me thinking... A thing that really bothers me when I've heard it repeated to younger women, whether they’re being chatted-up at the bar or hearing it from well-meaning loved ones, is “you're not like most girls.” Now, don't get me wrong, I love the idea of celebrating uniqueness! However, not at the expense of pulling others down. I look at my girlfriends and female relatives, who are all accomplishing so many different things - from running businesses, to being great role models, and just being remarkably creative in general - and I want to be like most girls. Kind hearted, intelligent women who are out to do some good. I full heartedly believe that real queens fix each other’s crowns, and that we reach greater heights when we lift our sisters up. In the end this issue is about celebrating fierceness in all its forms. From our gorgeous cover star, Miss World Australia 2019 Sarah Marschke, to a story of a woman who is breaking the mould, and a special piece reflecting on women’s right to choose, this issue is also designed to make us think. What I hope Get it girls, is that after reading this you'll have a fire in your belly and be inspired to live life fiercely.

GET IT I GET THINKING
Don’t call me Baby! — By Krysten Davis —
• fashion • accessories
kay – brace yourself – I’m going to have a whinge. I quite like shopping. I like to casually browse and then find the perfect treasure. I find this quite relaxing. Then, in my consumption induced state of relaxation, some 18-year-old shop assistant calls me ‘darling’ or even ‘my darling’?!
Enjoy a premium shopping experience!
Excuse me? I am not your ‘darling’, or ‘pet’, or (my favourite) ‘my love’. I find this annoying and condescending. If you would like to build a connection with me (the customer) please feel free to dazzle me with your knowledge of what else would go with the beautiful silk shirt I’m eyeing off, or even let me know that the matching shoes are currently half price – but DO NOT in a sickly, saccharine tone refer to me with a term of endearment!
Adorne Banana Blue Chocolat Lula Soul Matisse Monari N.Y.D.J. Obi Olsen Purolino Ruby YaYa Zaket & Plover
I am thrilled when a shop “ assistant genuinely wants to help me, not tell me that the fluoro, skin-tight, Lycra onesie ‘looks fabulous’ (it doesn’t).”
I like to maintain a friendly but professional distance. I am thrilled when a shop assistant genuinely wants to help me, not tell me that the fluoro, skin-tight, Lycra onesie ‘looks fabulous’ (it doesn’t). I do not need you to be my best friend. While I’m at it, DON’T ask me what I’m up to for the rest of the day. I also feel slightly nervous that I’m being quietly judged on ‘what I’ve been up to today’ or where I’m heading next. I may be going to discover the cure for malaria, or run a marathon, or spend the afternoon drinking gin lying on the couch – whatever I’m up to – it’s NONE of your business. Good service leads to repeat business and personal recommendation, but over friendly, false comradery just makes we want to punch someone.
OPENING HOURS Monday to Friday 9.30am to 5.00pm Saturday 9.00am to 3.00pm Sundays and public holidays closed.

GET IT I COVER STORY
BREAKING THE RULES This month is all about fierce women, so Get it’s Kathleen Loxton is investigating traditionally male dominated industries and shares a story of a Gold Coast woman who is breaking the mould
Australian women breaking the rules efore we read one woman’s extraordinary story, it’s important for us to take a look at different industries across Australia to understand why it’s so important for our younger generation to see women taking on roles across the board, from science to construction. After all, "You can't be what you can't see." > In July this year the SBS published the following:“A recent Women in STEM report by the Australian Academy of Science found only a quarter of physics and astronomy university students in Australia are women. When they enter the workforce, only 11 per cent of them make it to the top pay bracket according to a 2018 Professionals Australia report.” > Early this year it was reported by The Sydney Morning Herald that in Australia's health care and social assistance sector, the percentage of female employees has grown from 77.2 per cent in 1998 to 79 per cent of employees in 2018. August 2019
> The Sydney Morning Herald also reported in July this year that in “1998 men accounted for 86.2 per cent of construction workers but that reached to 88 per cent last year, data published by the federal government’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency shows.” > Last year the ABC published a graph that reflected the top 30 jobs in Australia, and highlighted the fact “all but a handful were skewed more than 75 per cent towards one gender or the other.” > The Australian Human Rights Commission has developed a toolkit of strategies regarding women in male dominated industries, focussing mostly on the areas of construction, telecommunications and mining, with the aim of attracting, recruiting and retaining women in these areas. Visit their website (humanrights.gov.au) for more information and advice. 12
Amanda’s story
met with Amanda at her stunning office on a surprisingly warm winter’s day. The place truly felt like a home away from home, with plenty of light and tastefully chosen pieces. It wasn’t a surprise she loved running her family business from here – who wouldn’t want an office that looked straight out of Vogue Living or Get it Living? So, here the story goes… The journey from school to a career encompassing wholesale, construction and property was a unique one for Amanda, and certainly wasn’t a pre-determined career path. “A lot of other girls went on to do degrees, and I didn’t like school, didn’t’ like studying. The family always had a wholesale business, though I got a job at a construction company when I left school. I was there for about 15 months, and when I was in-between jobs, I wanted to go up north,” recalled Amanda. However, this isn’t where Amanda’s future path led. During her time in-between work, her father asked her if she would be able to fill-in
for the company’s receptionist.“I think it was a conspiracy, because my dad started to get the girls to take lots of holidays!” said Amanda. Amanda was encouraged to keep coming back to the company and eventually grew to find something surprising; Amanda described, “I actually liked working in the business, it was quite interesting, and I enjoyed it." The key elements throughout Amanda’s development was her willingness to give things a go, being in a supportive environment and her ability to learn the business from the ground up. Amanda added,“The manager encouraged me to do different things, actually work through every facet of the business. I’d be going out back into the warehouse, driving forklifts… all sorts of things.” Eventually, Amanda found her footing in an area of the business where her interests continue to grow to this day.“There was a niche in the financial area, so I went down that path and then I ended up taking interest in the property side (because we had the wholesale and a smaller property division), and dad had dabbled a bit in property. The whole thing evolved over years and years,” said Amanda. Working alongside her father has been a wonderful experience for Amanda, and one relationship that will only get stronger. Amanda described,“We’ve done a lot of property together, and it’s total joy working together and creating together.” In early 2017 the family moved away from the wholesale business for the lifestyle and health of the family;“I basically walked away with my laptop,” recalled Amanda. This took bravery, but they knew it was the right thing to do and would soon set in motion plans for an exciting new venture.“We decided: if we are going to make such a big change, then we’ll change everything about how we do things,” said Amanda.
Since downsizing the business and focussing more on developing property, there is one lesson that has stuck with Amanda;“It’s not about your turnover, you can have the biggest turnover – a 20 to 30 million-dollar turnover – and still earn as much as you do with a turnover a quarter of that… you don’t necessarily need a big business to be successful.”The integral thing Amanda noted from this was that it’s important to work smart, not hard, where you can. Over the years there has been a lot of change in the areas of construction, wholesale and property, and one thing that has notably changed is the presence of women in these industries. Though there is still a lot of work to be done, Amanda spoke of the improvements we have seen, saying,“In our industry, once upon a time you’d be the only woman. I go on site now, and there’s women, not so much in the trades, but women in the construction industry. You’ll find women will start infiltrating through into the trades, though. It’s becoming more normal; we bring a whole different dynamic!” To ensure that this positive change continues, Amanda noted a critical part of cementing equality in these industries, and motivating our young women to not be defined by gender in their careers, is mentoring. Having mentored her own nieces, Amanda described,“There should be more mentoring for young women, it’s important for them! It doesn’t matter if you’re in construction or retail, there are some elements that are the same in every field.” The most unforgettable lesson? As Amanda would say,‘It’s about who is best for the job.” Go on, take the path less chosen Get it girls, and stride towards your dreams with determination and a great attitude. There’s no glass ceiling that you can’t smash!
We decided: if we are going to make such a big change, then we’ll change everything about how we do things.

GET IT I STAR PROFILE
FA S H I O N ' S
Rockstar
From living life on the streets to dressing some of the world’s biggest stars, designer Rocky Gathercole opens up to Get it’s Kathleen Loxton about the world of fashion and his exciting journey with Miss World Australia
ocky, a native of the Philippines, ran away from home at the tender age of 14-years-old. He survived making pocket change from a local street vendor, and though he never completed his high school education, Rocky later travelled to Saudi Arabia where he met an employer who would one day help him achieve his dreams. During the meteoric rise of his success, Rocky made his mark in Dubai. This led to Fashion Week invitations from Miami to New York, and establishing shops in both Los Angeles, USA, and Quezon City, Philippines. Today, he is instantly recognisable for his avant-garde creations and Rocky has dressed a spectacular array of household names; including the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, Sia, Paris Hilton and Katy Perry. This year, the stars aligned for Rocky’s 30th anniversary as a fashion designer and Miss World Australia 2019. A phone call was all it took for Rocky to lend his talents to the prestigious pageant. He recalled getting the call from Marites Novis (executive producer at MFN Productions), saying,“She called me in Manilla (while I was there doing a show) and she asked me if I was interested in coming to Australia. And I said,‘Of course I am!’ We’ve since become close friends.” When we spoke, Rocky was jet-lagged from his travels, having just arrived in Sydney, however, his enthusiasm and passion for the event, and his contribution to Miss World Australia 2019, was obvious. His collection was shown at the New South Wales state finals on July 7 and August 2019
did not disappoint. The breathtaking showcase was the organisational genius of Marites and fellow MFN Productions executive producer, William Lin. Marites explained,“The showcase celebrated Rocky’s incredible talent, but also waved the flag of the Philippines worldwide.” The fashion spectacular involved a 60-piece collection, which Rocky worked tirelessly over for three months (a feat not easily achieved in the world of couture).“It’s like something you can’t imagine,” said Rocky of his latest collection. Even while surrounded by all the glamour, the highlight for Rocky has been that he got to spend his special anniversary here;“That’s the best part of it, getting to do all of this in Australia,” he added. Looking back at all he has accomplished, Rocky noted the most memorable moments in his career so far would have to be when Britney Spears was featured in his stunning creation for her Piece of Me tour, and when he saw Katy Perry wearing his work in the Dark Horse music video. However, Rocky admitted Barbra Streisand is one celebrity he would love to dress in the future. From his Christian faith to strolling through marketplaces, Rocky continues to gather his inspiration from all areas of the creative. As Rocky would say about finding that spark in life,“There’s so many beautiful moments, so many beautiful things.” So, take a leaf out of Rocky’s sketchbook Get it girls and find the beauty in every situation, you may be surprised by the masterpieces you create. 14

Marschke’s MISS
WORLD It’s the event that hit the Gold Coast with style and grace, and we caught-up with Miss World Australia 2019 Sarah Marschke, to talk about her incredible career and where the crown will take her FASHION One Honey Boutique 2/40 Bundall Road, Bundall (07) 5602 6610 onehoneyboutique.com
et it’s journey with Miss World Australia began by partnering alongside the fabulous team at Skin O2, and we have all been anxiously awaiting the announcement that came from Palazzo Versace Hotel, on July 19. Sarah Marschke, the 20-year-old Bundabergborn beauty, was crowned Miss World Australia 2019. From fierce competition and worthy contestants, including every state final to each fabulous entrant, the prestigious crown was handed down by Gold Coaster and Miss World Australia 2018, Taylah Cannon. We met Sarah in the early hours on the morning after she won the title of Miss World Australia 2019. Running on about three-hours sleep, Sarah’s sunny disposition still shone through as she chatted with us and stunned the cameras. Recalling the whirlwind of events, Sarah said,“I remember thinking to myself just before the announcement was made, ‘Sarah, for you to be on this stage in front of all these people, it is amazing. No matter what happens tonight, be proud and August 2019

continue to keep your head high.’ Then the announcement was made, and I honestly have never cried so much. To see my parents in the background yelling out how proud they are, was the most heartfelt feeling I have ever experienced. I’m getting teary thinking about it!” The competition doesn’t stop there for Sarah though, and soon she will be off for the next part of the Miss World adventure. Sarah explained,“I will head off to London in December to compete in the international competition for the title of Miss World, which I’m incredibly excited about.” The experience Miss World will give Sarah will add to the fascinating array of roles she has undertaken in her career; such as a support worker, sports radio presenter for Triple H, and model. Sarah said of her working life so far,“All my roles have their own challenges, but I feel that has really shaped me into the person I am today, and as weird as it sounds, they are all quite similar in some ways. All roles require discipline, patience and the ability to work with other people. With support work I find it quite easy to incorporate sport into my position as everyone loves to get out and about! Also, with my radio 16
position, I definitely would not be doing that if I knew nothing about sport. As for modelling it has really helped me out with self-confidence, and now I have the ability to help other females struggling with these issues. I am thankful for all my roles.” Currently, Sarah has partnered with her brother, Jacob Marschke, on a project that will spread her work and mission worldwide. Sarah elaborated, saying,“Our sisterbrother project helps support and educate the communities in and around South Africa. We go around to local villages and schools and plant organic vegetable/ fruit gardens. As many of you know, resources are very limited over there, so we are doing our very best to change that. The gardens offer so many opportunities for the communities, for example, nutritional fruit and vegetables to cure starvation. It offers mothers a weekly wage and free food for their family just for helping with the garden, and we also educate them on how to make natural remedies to prevent diseases. It brings the community together as a family. This project is not government funded, so at the moment my brother and I are working extremely hard to fund this project ourselves.” As a representative softballer, touch player, and netballer, Sarah’s talents and passions also carry on to the sporting fields. When asked if she has always been keen on sports, the answer was enthusiastic; “Yes! From the very beginning. At just the age of 8, I was playing 7 different sports and training 7 days a week. I loved every minute of it and my parents were extremely supportive throughout my sporting journey. Sport has really shaped me into the person I am today.” Playing for the Bombers and hoping to be drafted in 2020 to represent both QLD and NSW at nationals, Sarah continues to work hard on and off the field. Though we had to ask: what keeps Sarah in top form and driven to achieve her goals? “AFL is the one sport I never get tired of and I always find myself wanting to improve. I’m always doing extras outside of training, working on technique and my fitness. The drive I get to achieve this goal comes naturally for me. If it’s something I really want to succeed in, then I won’t stop until I get it,” she said. Another exciting venture Sarah hopes to undertake this year (and another talent to add to the list), is releasing an original song. Of the creative process Sarah said,“I’m surrounded by so much love and support, I find that inspiration to write is just constantly hitting me. I’m often writing about personal experiences, that’s why I am extremely closed with my music, because when I’m writing, I am at my most vulnerable state and find that difficult to accept. But since winning Miss World Australia, it has given me a boost of confidence and I’m ready to share my love for music.” Regarding how holding the title of Miss World Australia will impact her future endeavours, and how she hopes to give back in light of this honour, Sarah is determined to make every moment count.“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to represent Australia. The benefit Miss World has given me is a voice and a wonderful platform. My main focus will be to continue to empower women in sport and to be a role model for our younger generation,” she said. So, Get it girls, what’s Sarah’s advice for younger women? “Be you. Never let anyone stand in the way of your dreams. You are going to receive some negative comments throughout your journey in life, but continue to strive for your goals.” This is certainly a message that we need to pass on and one to remember ourselves; we should always carry our head high.
All my roles have their own challenges, but I feel that has really shaped me into the person I am today.

LOGIES
FLASHBACK Get it’s Kaileigh Carew brings us everything we missed from Australian television’s night of nights, the Annual TV Week Logie Awards ceremony.
new single, Little Things, which stunned the entire crowd and left everyone speechless. Boy band, Why Don’t We performed their new single, I Don’t Belong in this Club, for the first time in Australia, and was also a huge crowd pleaser! However, it was Guy Sebastian who had the audience completely captivated with his performance, Choir. The meaningful song was dedicated to his former band member, Luke Liang, who passed away last year. The purpose behind the lyrics, with the fresh and upbeat rhythm of the song, had everyone’s ears switched on and everyone’s eyes on him! n a room filled with only familiar faces were celebrities, including Kelly Rowland, Lincoln Lewis, Hamish and Andy, Boy George and Sophie Monk, just to name a few. Although the Logies is about recognising Australian television, it has also become an event acknowledged for its fashion statements, iconic stage performances and inspiring speeches. This means that those without an invite unfortunately do not get to experience these moments first hand. Don’t stress yet though, as I am going to do my very best to bring the most important moments back to life for you.
Best dressed
Sophie Monk was the talk of the town with her Gold Logie inspired gown designed by Jason Grech. The gold metallic dress was something that I truly believe could have been seen from space with its many metres of fabric. The Love Island host joked on her Instagram with a photo caption stating,“If you can’t win a gold logie… dress as one.” However, it was Neighbours actress, Olivia Junkeer that stole the show. Wearing an Oglia-Loro Couture two-piece gown, she was on trend and looked like Princess Jasmine with a 2019 makeover.
Performance of the night
Delta Goodrem gave us her absolute everything on stage and, being Australia’s golden girl, there was not a lip still when her iconic Born to Try lyrics played. Jessica Mauboy also performed, singing her August 2019
Speech of the night
When Tom Gleeson won the Gold Logie of the evening, his speech was controversial to say the least and resulted in some not so impressed faces amongst the crowd. However, Tom Gleeson is a comedian and to me his speech was a piece of comedic work. It was funny, light-hearted and showcased who he is and why he deserved to win, but I’ll let you decide that one for yourself. The real speech of the night was that by Australian Journalist, Kerry O’Brien. As soon as he stepped foot onto the stage the entire room gave a standing ovation. As one of the most respected journalists in Australia, in his speech Kerry shared the importance of journalism. He touched on how the industry is struggling due to the technologically driven era which we are a part of, yet it endures. He shared inspiring words to everyone working in the media, mentioning to deliver programs of relevance, quality and integrity. He also shed light on the ongoing issue of racism towards the Aboriginal community, and how we should not be ignorant of Aboriginal culture. He finished the speech with love, thanking his family for their support, particularly his wife, Sue. My favourite line was this: “She [wife, Sue Javes] also told me to avoid using the word ‘journey’ tonight. So, I’ll close simply by saying this has been a wonderful road to have been allowed to travel. Thanks to all of you, especially in the living rooms of Australia, who have travelled that road with me.” And just like that, it’s like you didn’t miss a thing… 18

Influence with integrity Is our romance with the social media influencer over? Or, are we simply shying away from accounts that don’t “feel”real? Thought leader and mindset coach, Maria Boznovska, teaches us how to create engagement with heart udiences are awakening to their need for authenticity in order to engage beyond one or two interactions with online personalities, regardless of how many followers they have amassed. It is no longer about following the crowd and taking someone’s word as gospel, just because they have been labelled an influencer. An authentic influencer doesn’t aim to tell people how to think, rather it is in their beingness of who they really are — on and off camera — that demonstrates an energy of authenticity that people naturally become attracted to. The audience can then determine their own truth. An authentic influencer does not become “obsessed” with how many followers they have accrued, or with suggesting others should think the way they do. They encourage people to want to think for their own selves and tap into their own truth about any given situation. Tips for creating authentic relationships online: l Awareness of your relationship with yourself is key. Are you coming from a place of love, acceptance and embracing who YOU are with compassion and understanding? This is key. The relationship with yourself is what you project to the world. It's how you see others and how you see the world, and in turn, how others see you. l Clarify your top three values in life and in business. These govern the decisions you make and are what makes you live in alignment with your authentic self. Ask yourself: "In the context of my business, what are my three highest values?" "In the context of my life, what are my three highest values?" Then, sit back and observe. Are they aligned or profoundly opposite? l Understand your message — your why — and then be fully self-expressed in everything you do, say, write, and even how you dress. Your message and presence are then consistent. State: "This is who I am. How can I share who I am and be of service to others?" Most people ask: "This is who I am, do you like me?" and then twist and contort themselves to fit in and please the market. Thus, they lose the message they authentically want to share. Understand you are not for everyone. When you try to be someone you're not, there is 19
Understand your message — your why — and then be fully self-expressed in everything you do, say, write, and even how you dress. a huge disconnect. Who you are authentically "being" is the message to the world. l Own your vulnerability. Shine a light on where you feel vulnerable. By doing it this way you heal yourself, and in the process heal others. This is our greatest equalizer — our commonality — that we all share: we have the same emotions, even though our stories may differ. It's what connects us and makes us feel seen, heard and validated for our experiences. l Listen to understand, rather than merely listening to respond. l Be interested, rather than interesting. Too often we think as an influencer we must be interesting and constantly make it about us. Without an audience you are not an influencer. Very quickly you realise it's not about you and necessarily your journey, rather it’s about others and how your journey, experiences and message can unite others and bring oneness. l Don't aim for perfection! Trying to be perfect is the exact opposite of being authentic. However, many people are afraid that if they make mistakes then they won't be seen as an expert. This is what makes you relatable, and is how we gain experience and evolve to be and become. l An authentic influencer doesn't aim to tell people how to think, rather in their "being" they demonstrate a thought system of how to live congruently aligned. People can then determine their own truth. I do not want people to think the way I do, I merely want people to think. It’s about empowering your audience to think differently about themselves and about others. August 2019

Her body,
her choice New research shows that women who choose a childfree life – whatever the reason – are happy with their decision. So why is it that no one else is?
aren was 29 when she returned home to New Zealand to attend her brother’s wedding. She was excited about the whole affair, but post-event reported that her experience was tainted by guests who had badgered her about when she was planning to ‘finally have a baby?’ This question to her, while at the same time her partner was asked about his career and in fact it was Karen who was doing exceedingly better in hers. One relative deemed it so unusual that she and her partner were still child-free, that they had brazenly asked Karen if she was barren. Wedding story of the year! August 2019
It’s almost 2020 and we’re still enduring a conversation that reflects antiquated societal beliefs that can’t separate women and motherhood. All the while, contemporary analysis from the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicates that within the next decade the number of couples without children will surpass the number of couples with kids. The conversation is changing, perhaps the tipping point is now. More couples are choosing not to have kids, and society can’t cope. It’s such a hot topic that the ABC brought it to life in a highly publicised feature in June, that followed a special episode on the Ladies, We Need To Talk podcast presented by Yumi Stynes. Surprisingly most of the social media chatter on the interviews was supportive. This, in stark contrast to past coverage on the same topic, including a prominent 60 Minutes segment aired within the past ten years that attracted hundreds of scathing comments aimed at the women featured, calling them ‘selfish’, ‘in denial’, ‘ungrateful’, and ‘shallow’. The latest ABC spotlight on being ‘footloose and childfree’ dispels the myth that women are obliged to ‘find a partner and have kids’. More women around the world are choosing to ignore this path and research published by a range of universities and health organisations, including a significant study on the subject out of the University of Calgary, shows they’re happier for it. Covering this subject, ABC.net.au quoted psychotherapist Zoe Krupka who defines childfree by choice “as a woman making a conscious decision that she doesn't want to have her own children". "It doesn't mean she doesn't want to co-parent or step-parent or help her friends out with their kids or be an aunty, but she's made a conscious decision that's not based on infertility or chance or circumstances 20
beyond her control," said Dr Krupka. The reasons cited for women choosing to be childfree range from worries about overpopulation and climate change, to not wanting to endure the unreasonable criticism mothers receive, mental health concerns, and a desire for independence and financial freedom. Women interviewed about their decision talk about wanting to travel and create in other ways; and about not being prepared to change what they know to be a happy life with their partner to something that will be entirely different and not necessarily the rosy picture imparted by peers. It’s very easy to call such women selfish, and perhaps there’s something in that, comments Tory Shepherd who has written a book about her choice not to have children. The author of On Freedom told the ABC that by the same token,“if you're having a kid just so they look after you when you're older, that's pretty selfish [too]”. It’s a relief for many women to know that ultimately our sole purpose on earth is not to reproduce, but a choice we are free to make. However, it’s still a private emotional challenge having to manage with the expectations dealt by society as a whole. Women of ‘a certain age’ know well the pitiful looks received when the answer is ‘no’ to the question, ‘do you have children?’, and the social exclusion experienced when conversations are only about kids or invites to parties get ‘lost in the mail’. There are the positives though, and reasons women confidently choose a childfree life: sleep, spontaneity, autonomy, independence, career, and ‘fur babies’ (not a ‘practice run before the real thing’). The Ladies, We Need To Talk podcast talks to a guest who sums it up: “I would love it if people wouldn't see it as something you lack … [but rather, you] as someone who embraces other things.” How do you see it? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter, #childfreebychoice
On freedom
There lingers a sense that the childless-by-choice woman is unnatural, barren, weird. Selfish, career-obsessed, cat-loving. A bit witchy…
Tory Shepherd
eanwhile, women who have chosen to be parents are under more pressure than ever to be perfect. To not just ‘have it all’—a career and kids and a partner—but to live up to the unrealistic expectations of the filtered world of social media. One in which you bake an Australian Women’s Weekly birthday cake before donning sexy lingerie to show off your mum bod, before getting up at 5 a.m. the next day to meditate before running a sprightly 10 kilometres and planking till you drop, then cooking an Insta-worthy meal before applying just the right hydrating cream and uploading a sleep
statistics show a significant shift of women saying no to children. An untold number of articles has been written over the years lamenting the fact that US actor Jennifer Aniston hasn’t had kids. Though she has repeatedly asserted she’s totally fine about it, glossy magazine readers with glassy eyes can’t imagine that she’s not devastated she didn’t cook up a kid with former husband Brad Pitt. Readers spend hours discussing online the plight of ‘Sad Jen’, the barren, weepy superstar. And many of us will never forget when former Liberal senator Bill Heffernan said Julia Gillard was not fit for leadership because she was ‘deliberately barren’. The phrase conjured the archetypal image of the childless woman as embittered and
That’s what people noticed. Not the profile of a woman destined for greatness, but her kitchen’s lack of fruitful domesticity. app so you can do it all again tomorrow. It is mind-deadeningly facile to constantly repeat all that, but many women feel overwhelmed by an endless stream of boxes they feel the need to tick daily. It was easier, back in my mum’s day. You got married, had kids. We were latchkey kids, getting on the bus with backpacks as big as our torsos, riding around without seatbelts, being dragged to goonbagfuelled dinner parties where we’d sneak sips and after-dinner mints and go to sleep on beds piled with jackets that smelled like cigarettes. Imagine a modern mother letting any of that happen. There have always been mainstream expectations of motherhood, and mainstream suspicions that fall on those who don’t join the club, even as the
cold, a non-woman because she had not had life in her womb. Before that, and before she became the new Labor leader, Ms Gillard had been photographed at home in her humble, retro kitchen. An empty bowl sat on the table. That’s what people noticed. Not the profile of a woman destined for greatness, but her kitchen’s lack of fruitful domesticity. The metaphor of the empty fruit bowl haunted our first female prime minister throughout her tenure. More recently, Pope Francis, whom many still consider a moral authority despite all the child sex abuse cover-ups within his church, declared voluntary childlessness ‘selfish’. ‘A society with a greedy generation, that doesn’t want to surround itself with children, that considers them above all 21
worrisome, a weight, a risk, is a depressed society. The choice to not have children is selfish,’ the pontiff said. He and his ilk can pontificate all they want; more women are staying childless and that won’t be fixed by appeals to God or country. By 2030, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there’ll be fewer families with children than those without. The Australian fertility rate—the average number of children born per woman— in 2017 was 1.74. That’s not enough to ‘replace’ the present population. A comprehensive, world-first study published in The Lancet recently looked at childbirth in 195 countries from 1950 to 2017. It found fertility rates are declining in countries where women have more freedom due to increased education, better access to contraception, and lower infant mortality rates (an effect of better support and healthcare). These very personal and complicated choices being made (mostly) by women are already changing Australia, and the world. But even those with these freedoms are hemmed in by circumstance; it’s a quasi-freedom. This is not a book about people who want desperately to have children, but can’t. It doesn’t deal with the heartache of medical complications or miscarriages. I won’t pretend to understand the IVF rollercoaster. It’s for people who have chosen childlessness, or are feeling ambivalent, or have come to terms with not having children, or are trying to. It’s also for people who want to understand this demographic shift better. This is a little book about the big idea of freedom. How women, given freedom, generally end up having fewer or no children. And how that freedom is heavily qualified, hemmed in by not-freedom. GET IT I BEAUTY
There is an exciting new development in the area of aesthetic medicine, and its name is Cellessence rysten Davis has been a staple in the beauty and medical industries for over ten years, working her way to the top of her field at prestigious practices including The Varicose Vein Clinic and The Cellulite Clinic. With such an impressive background, which includes a science degree in biology and a degree in naturopathy, she is well placed to take on her next venture. For the past two years Krysten has been on an incredible journey, following her passions and interests in the area of aesthetic medicine, and developing a forward-thinking and ground-breaking approach to her work. ‘’I wanted Cellessence to be a new concept in aesthetic medicine, instead of adding artificial substances to the body (like anti-ageing injectables and fillers). Our key approach is to stimulate the body’s own processes to achieve a younger, fresher look. What our treatments do is promote these processes, such as collagenesis, to achieve rejuvenation. It’s the integral nature of the cell which promotes this rejuvenation from within. The progress in this area is so exciting for Cellessence, and the industry too,’’ explained Krysten. What this means is that Cellessence is at the forefront of the movement in the medical and beauty industries to look to more natural approaches and using the abilities of the human body to renew like never before. Forget nasty chemicals and other questionable ingredients, this is the way forward to achieving the results you’ve always wanted – without sacrificing your preference for safe and effective results. Cellessence’s treatments include both face and body treatments, such as: fat freezing, cellulite treatment, non-surgical face lifts, and skin tightening and texture improvements. However, Cellessence’s treatments are taken to an even higher level with the availability of assessments and recommendations for diet and nutrition, using high-tech biometric assessment technology like Styku and InBody.‘’It’s a whole approach. A biometric assessment gives you incredible insight into how you can better look after yourself and work on those areas you may find troublesome,’’ described Krysten. For those worried about committing to having a treatment done, Krysten and the Cellessence team are well-aware of the concerns many women have when deciding whether or not to use aesthetic medicine. GET IT I RELATIONSHIPS
hen partners cheat, who deserves second chances? Linda Prescott, Get it’s resident love expert from Ideal Introductions, answers one of the toughest relationship questions
he biggest issue with cheating is arguably not the sexual liaison itself, but the betrayal of trust. While some people can get past the betrayal and salvage what’s left of their relationship, others might find it impossible… What’s needed to salvage the relationship When a relationship breaks down due to a cheating partner, usually, this type of repair needs the involvement of an expert like a marital counsellor or a relationship expert. Although an expert is no guarantee that the relationship will be fixed, having a professional in the room will allow for proper conversations to be had. Stumbling blocks One of the greatest hurdles is overcoming the hurt, anger and resentment felt by the betrayed. These feelings, whatever their roots, need to be openly acknowledged and constructively expressed. Another large hurdle is the inability to trust the betrayer, who has typically connived, lied, manipulated, coveredup, and made a fool of his or her partner. Why breaking trust is breaking everything Love alone is not enough. This might sound cliché, but trust really is the glue that holds a relationship together. Once that pledge to commitment is broken, all bets are off. Is an affair a sign that the relationship has underlying issues? August 2019
Absolutely. Lack of or poor communication, loss of intimacy, hurt feelings, festering resentment or embitterment frequently lead to acting out in the form of cheating behaviour. Cheating may also be seen as an indirect way of signalling chronic dissatisfaction, anger or frustration. However, what cheating is not, is an excuse for not keeping one’s integrity and commitment made to a partner. What needs to be done to fix the crack? Addressing the indiscretion: You can’t fix the problem by pretending the cheating did not happen. You will need to call it out and to talk about the betrayal if you want to move forward. Talk about the communication: Clearly there has been a communication breakdown. Evaluate and then improve on the communication style between you and your partner. Build the trust: This is perhaps the biggest challenge, but if the relationship were to be saved, trust-repairing is non-negotiable. The philanderer must also know that trust has become a privilege, not a right. Trust must be earned, and gradually re-established by offenders. Find the courage to trust again: Should you choose to fix the relationship, you will have to find it in yourself to trust again. Humans make mistakes and are imperfect beings. But remember, we can also learn from our mistakes and avoid repeating them. Do all cheaters get a second chance? If the philandering partner has cheated no more than once, the chances of working 24
things through might be higher. But what about repeat offenders? Once can be considered a slip up, twice or more is a pattern. Why should the serial cheater be forgiven? Of course, this is for the person who was betrayed to decide. Some see their own commitment to the relationship and love for the offending partner as reasons for either overlooking such bad behaviour, or for giving them repeated chances to change. This can become a kind of co-dependency, unintentionally enabling and perpetuating the problem. The key is that commitment is a two-way street. Both parties must be equally committed to the relationship and to monogamy, if that is what is promised and expected. Does forgiving a cheating partner say something about ourselves? This is not about blaming the victim. Selfblame is the main reason betrayed partners remain in such relationships. Remember, offenders are responsible for their evil deeds. But as humans, we are complex. So, what does taking a cheating partner back say about who we really are, and more importantly, how we really feel about ourselves? Are we not worthy of love, respect and commitment? How much are we really willing to put up with to avoid being alone? What about keeping the family together for the sake of finances or the children? These are tough questions, but they need to be honestly answered before the decision can be made whether or not to give serial (or even firsttime) cheaters yet another opportunity.
GET IT I DATING re you a fanatical Facebooker or a constant texter? We don’t have to step out of bed to remain connected anymore, but has life become a virtual reality? Once upon a time we used to have to leave the house to meet someone, and men’s efforts to deliver a chat-up line, or a good conversation, had to be perfectly honed if we expected to make any kind of romantic connection. So, let’s say you go on the first date after all that cyber communication and are slightly delirious that you have found a real, normal, human being with a terrific personality. You really fancy them, and they seem to fancy you back. However, then there is the delicate issue of communication post-date: text-etiquette. What is too much and what is too little? How risqué should you go? When, if ever, should you start exchanging picture messages? energetic? Not demanding a reply? Remember that text Communication messages are often ambiguous. Meet Queensland’s make-up artist of 2018, now featuring in Get it and on a mission to make YOU feel damn fabulous!
o you ever feel overwhelmed by the sheer breadth of products, tips, tricks, rules and demands spread in front of you, all promising to make you look and feel ‘more beautiful’? With millions of items marketed each year around the globe, and billions spent on advertising so these products are in your face (rather than effectively ‘on’ it), it is a huge challenge for busy women to know where to start. I’m a working mum, I get it! I’ve loved this business for as long as I can remember, and my passion grows as I do. You’ll spot on my site (amandaramsay.com.au) that I proudly highlight my mission: I help women over 40 feel damn fabulous about themselves using genuine insider beauty know-how. Beauty isn’t about youth, although I know the industry is skewed that way. I believe the term ‘anti-ageing’ should be removed from our vernacular. Ageing is a privilege, not a disease. When you look good you feel good, and this is proven all throughout life. Recognition as 2018 Queensland Makeup Artist of the Year, and a 2019 Gold Coast Women of the Year Award finalist has meant I’ve been able to broaden my reach. I’ve had the chance to meet more of you, and to share secrets of accessible beauty, products and routines that work for your budget and lifestyle. Keep an eye out for a new topic each month in Get it. Drop us a line on social media and share your biggest beauty challenge. Let’s work together to get it solved.

10 wellnessthat’ll practices change your life Need to take time to replenish your fierce? Megan Dalla-Camina, author of Simple Soulful Sacred: A Woman’s Guide to Clarity, Comfort and Coming Home to Herself (Hay House), talks us through how to make wellness practices count he reality of keeping our wellbeing in check amongst the busyness of daily life can be really challenging. Among the hundreds of things you could attempt to bring into your daily life, there are some consistently tried, tested and researched practices that we know work and will support your very best, most vibrant wellbeing. From my decades of experience working with thousands of women, plus my research through a Masters of Wellness degree, here are ten simple yet effective wellness practices that have the potential to create massive positive change in your life. They may seem simple, and you may have heard some of them before. But the magic is in the doing, not the thinking. What are you practicing daily? Try these and watch your levels of wellbeing skyrocket. Meditate: The research on meditation is profound. From reducing negative impacts of stress, increasing physical and psychological wellbeing, better focus and deeper sleep, there are reasons why people meditate. Start with five minutes daily, sitting with your eyes closed and train your attention on your breath. You can use an app like Headspace for support. It has the power to change your life. Hydrate: Our bodies are roughly 60 per cent water. Challenges from tiredness to overeating can be due to dehydration. We get dehydrated when we’re sick, but also when we’ve sweated profusely, or simply not drunk enough water. Feeling thirsty, a dry mouth, headache or dizziness, can be signs of impaired physical and mental performance.
Stay hydrated by drinking more water. Track your intake for a week and see how you go. Sleep: Most adults need between 7.5 to 9.5 hours each night. But most people don’t get it. Lack of sleep is no laughing matter. It impairs everything from brain function to productivity, immunity to emotional wellbeing. Turn off your devices, create a bedtime routine, and commit to getting the sleep you need. Yoga: Yoga has been practiced in the East for 5,000 years. You don’t have to be flexible, and it’s not about how bendy you can be. It’s a practice of union between all aspects of yourself. You can start with some gentle postures and stretches and work up to a more formal practice. Try online classes at glo.com or a local studio class. Breathe: Notice your breath for a few minutes. Is your inhale high in your chest, or down in your belly? Deep breathing supports a calm nervous system and helps us to slow down. Breathing in through your nose for a count of four, holding for four, exhaling through your nose for four, and holding it out for a count of four is breathing that can change everything. Walk: Taking time out in nature each day for a walk is a beautiful way to restore your spirit, clear your mind and energise your body. Whether you’re walking the kids to school, taking a stroll at lunch or going for a bush walk on the weekend, walking daily is a ritual that will enhance your wellbeing. Gratitude: Science shows that a daily practice of writing down three good things 33
has a significant impact on our wellbeing. Keep a dedicated notebook and at the end of each day, write down three specific things you’re grateful for. It could be your morning coffee, the kiss on your cheek from your child, or the flowers from your garden. Give thanks for the positive in your life, and watch the positive grow. Nourish: There is so much conflicting advice on food that it can leave us frustrated and confused. But there is a question that will guide you in the right direction: does this nourish me? It’s easy to see that sugar, white carbohydrates, too much alcohol and processed foods do not energise us. Choose real food for nourishment and energy, and you can’t go wrong. Sweat: A sweat session at least a few times a week is a game changer. The best exercise is the one you will actually do. Is it running, kick boxing, a spin class, swimming, salsa dancing, martial arts? It doesn’t matter what it is, just that you do it. Find something you enjoy and build it in to your regular routine. Improved mood, better sleep, less stress and so many more benefits are waiting for you. Restore: Taking regular breaks to restore yourself is a life changing wellness habit. It could be your meditation break, making some herbal tea and sipping it slowly, doing some painting, or simply laying on your bed for ten minutes before cooking dinner. Building in ten to fifteen-minute breaks a few times a day will support your energy for the long term. August 2019
How to stay out of a nursing home! JEFF OSBORNE FROM VISION PERSONAL TRAINING BUNDALL TEACHES US HOW TO REMAIN FIERCE AND FIT LONG-TERM
Dawn, Lisa and Violet from Vision Bundall t is never something you want to do to your parents, and it isn’t something you want to hear from your kids:“It’s time to put you into a nursing home.” I’m not saying that it can’t be a good experience, but I think everyone would like to delay it if they can. You may ask,“how do you do that?” It’s all about your mobility. When it comes to health-span (the amount of time you spend on this earth in good health physically and mentally), there are a few things that will keep you young, fit and fall-proof, like jumping. Unfortunately, at some point in our adult lives, we decide that jumping is no longer a good idea, and we stop. Once we stop a cascade of things start happening, and there are consequences! The most common cause of people ending up in full-time care is that they cannot go to the bathroom on their own. Often this comes as a result of a fall that leads to an injury. After the age of about 35, we start to lose muscle mass, and if you have an accident and are bed-bound for a period of time, that muscle loss happens fast! There are three significant parts to mobility that you need to try to maintain: Strength: A great test of your lower body strength is to sit in a chair, straighten one leg and use the other leg only (with no hands), then stand up. If you can do this ten times on each side, your strength is good. Otherwise, it is declining. Try it now! Speed: Most falls occur when someone trips and they don’t have the foot speed to get their foot underneath themselves to catch the fall. Speed and strength go hand in hand, but doing things that require you to move quickly is essential. These reaction times are best improved by working up to being able to jump and then doing it regularly. If you look at a step, and it is scary to jump onto, you are already down that path. If you can’t jump now, that’s ok; you need to start working up to it. If you can, do it and do it often. Balance: It is the thing to focus on most, and I agree it needs to be practised. If you lose balance easily, you are more likely to fall. However, fall
“it’s not just about weight loss,
prevention isn’t just about balance. Even people with great balance will sometimes trip, so you need to work on speed and strength. Working on balance is as easy as standing on one leg with your eyes closed for more than 30 seconds. If you can’t do that, start with eyes open and build up to over a minute and then work at eyes closed. Just make sure you have somewhere to grab if you lose your balance. Assess where you are at: If you are under the age of 50, I expect you to be able to jump onto something the height of your knees. If you don’t have the confidence to do that, you need to start by working on your strength and maybe something like squatting with a small jump at the top. With jumping, the impact and way you land matters - it must be smooth and quiet. If you jump up onto something, don’t jump back down, step down. Most injuries happen in the jumping back down off the box. Between 60 and 70 you really should be able to stand up, on one leg, from a chair that has your knees at 90 degrees while you are seated. We have plenty of clients in their late 60s that jump onto boxes the height of their hips, but they spent years working up to that level. Over 70, you need to maintain the strength to be able to stand from a chair without the use of your arms. IF you can’t get up without the help of your arms, you are one sore shoulder away from being stuck in a chair and needing assistance. We have an 84-year-old that shuffled in here when she was 79 and now can run, jump and stand up from a seat with no arm help. It is possible to improve, but the later you leave it, the harder it is to regain. The tricky thing with all of this is you need someone with experience and qualifications to look after you on the journey of becoming stronger, faster and fitter. It doesn’t take much time per week, but the time you spend accumulates, and it will pay massive dividends, ultimately affecting the quality of your last decades. If you are like me and want to travel, enjoy life, and play with family and friends, you must not wait any longer! Start working on it today!

Is this the end to heavy periods? Dr Andrew Cary, the Gold Coast’s renowned obstetrician, gynaecologist and IVF specialist, discusses an incredible procedure that is remarkably effective against disruptive periods
roublesome menstrual bleeding is an extremely common problem; however, studies show that many women who experience heavy periods don’t bring the subject up with their doctor or seek treatments. In reality though, at least 1 in 5 women are affected by heavy periods. The periods often have slowly and progressively increased in amount, intensity and duration over many months or years, so the experience for many women is, “this is my new normal.” But it does not have to be, women do not need to suffer through this. Heavy periods and irregular periods affect your life in many ways. There is the physical aspect of feeling tired, weak and nauseated, as well as experiencing bad cramps. Socially and professionally there is a need to skip social functions or be
forced to miss work, or suddenly leave work. The emotional effects are also severe, with more than 70 per cent experiencing depression, moodiness and anxiety, 80 per cent avoiding sex because of troublesome bleeds, and feeling a lack of confidence around the time of their period.
The experience for many women is, ‘this is my new normal.’ But it does not have to be, women do not need to suffer through this. For a number of women this all occurs in their late 30s to 40s, and at a time where they
have completed their childbearing. A brief procedure in day surgery called a NovaSure endometrial ablation can dramatically reduce or stop these troublesome heavy periods known as menorrhagia. The NovaSure procedure is performed under a light general anaesthetic and is a day procedure. There are no cuts or incisions, and for most women there is only mild or minimal pain after the procedure. After having the procedure over 90 per cent of women report their periods have reduced to normal, light, or nil. A return to normal activity can usually happen in 1 or 2 days and with over 2 million women having been treated with NovaSure endometrial ablation worldwide, it has an extensive clinical effectiveness record. I have been performing NovaSure procedures at my day surgery, Pindara Day Procedure Centre, for more than 15 years, and I am honoured to have been able to help so many women regain their quality of life by ceasing troublesome heavy periods. I feel secure in the knowledge that the procedure is effective for so many women, but particularly in the safety aspects of the NovaSure device, which specifically ensures correct placement and safe triggering of the device within the uterine cavity. Effectiveness and quality of the result is very important, but safety in my hands is absolutely paramount. Certainly, the final thought is that women who have completed their family do not need to suffer with troublesome periods and the solution – NovaSure – is quick, safe and effective, with a rapid recovery time.
With you all the way Dr Andrew Cary is a highly respected and loved women’s health consultant, specialising in gynaecology, obstetrics and IVF for more than 24 years. l l l l l l

THE SCIENCE BEHIND
your sneeze Not all sneezes are created equal – what does yours say about you?
e’ve all got a confident sneezer in our midst. That person who – when it has to happen, it happens, and we all know about it. Then there’s the petite sneezer. The one who has pinched her nose since primary school, quite sure she doesn’t want to steal the scene. We all sneeze differently. But why are we sneezing in the first place, particularly as spring draws near? Spring suffering According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, approximately one in five of us suffer from allergic rhinitis. Professor Mimi Tang of the RCH Melbourne’s Department of Allergy and Immunology and expert guest speaker at October’s Free From Show (freefromshow. com.au), explains what’s going on. “Allergy develops when the immune system incorrectly recognises a harmless allergen (such as pollen) as harmful and responds to it with an allergic-type response. The immune system makes allergy antibodies (IgE) against the allergen. These allergy antibodies bind to the surface of allergy cells called mast cells, and mast cells sit in the lining of the nose and airways. When the person is exposed to the pollen again, the pollen binds to the IgE antibodies on the surface of the mast cells, and when two adjacent antibodies are bound by the allergen, this activates the mast cell causing it to release a myriad of factors that in turn cause the allergic reaction with sneezing, itching, and watery runny nose.” What’s in a sneeze? While we all suffer the same response to
irritants, a sneeze doesn’t happen the same way for everyone. Face and body shape play a part in the volume and projection of a sneeze. Environment and culture also influence sneezes. When travelling, you may have noticed that people sneeze differently around the world. Author James Chapman captured this in a book called How to Sneeze in Japanese, and shares that universally we’ll hear everything from ‘achoo’ in English to ‘achhee’ in Hindi,‘hatschi’ in German and ‘hakushon’ in Japanese. You and your sneeze A study by Benadryl claims to have found a link between type of sneezing and personality characteristics. The study linked dominant personalities to having loud, abrupt sneezes that they move on quickly from; a conscientious personality is likely to suppress a sneeze and be unimpressed by those who do not cover their mouth when sneezing. Do you relate? Sneezy superstition For some, a good hearty sneeze can be cathartic. But for others, a sneeze may be a curse. In Poland, it’s believed a sneeze means a person’s mother-in-
law is criticising them. Similarly, in China and Japan it’s commonly thought that a surprise sneeze means you’re being gossiped about. Some people are led to believe that a sneeze rids you of malevolent beings, but others think a sudden sneeze is a warning you are about to be invaded by evil. It certainly feels like the latter when we’re suffering in spring. Surviving the sneezy season No matter the shape or sound of your sneeze, if it’s brought about by allergic rhinitis it’s certainly no laughing matter. Professor Tang says that unfortunately – like in many parts of the world – the number of sufferers is on the rise in Australia. "Reducing exposure to allergen helps. For example, keep windows of the house closed in the pollen season, wear sunglasses on high pollen days, and don’t hang clothing outside to dry in the pollen season.” Chempro Chemist have a wide range of treatments and preventative therapy's to help assist with your allergy needs. GET IT I MONEY
H T I W E S C E R C E I N F A N E I B UR F YO Les McGuire ADFS(FP), Principal of Future Proof Financial, encourages us to be fierce with our finances
s a personal and business finance expert, coach, and entrepreneur, I have seen many things. It is now time that we need to think differently! Let’s not do the same things over and over again, while expecting a different result. We need to ask ourselves: how can we be smarter with our decisions, control our spending urges and develop better habits in order to create a better personal and financial future? Life is a marathon, not a sprint. Take your time, plan your future, be patient before making decisions, and remember, life without a plan is just a wish. We live in a fast-paced world, we have come to expect things to be readily available at all times. We now order transport and food through an app, watch movies recently released at home on tv and expect everything without delay. But in this age of instant gratification, it's important to note the ways we can control the urge to spend when we don’t need to. I am writing this article from Scotland and let me tell you I am spending more money than I would like to. The English Pound is crippling on conversion. We have been blessed to eat at a Michelin star restaurant in the Isle of Skye. We are, however, the exception to the rule. On turning up to the restaurant, the menu had pidgeon and black pudding on it. I started to sweat, stress, freak out really. I made a quick request to the kitchen, and somehow, they were able to amend the menu to cater to our less than curious palates. It’s amazing how you can develop an allergy to anything if required. These unexpected stresses and costs raise the question: how can we save more money and invest it wisely to achieve the things you have always wanted? August 2019
40
Let's go back to basics. Remember the old money boxes we had when we were young? The same concept as we get older is relevant. If we spend more money than we earn then we end up with a negative financial outcome. So, write a list of all of the subscriptions you have at present, these may include: Netflix, Stan, iTunes, Foxtel, Kayo, the list goes on. Throughout the next month record every time you use each service, you may be surprised by how little you use them. Cancel the subscriptions you don’t use, then put the equivalent amount of money in that money box we were talking about. In six months open the box and you may find a nice surprise; one that may help fund that holiday you have wanted to take, or buy that special treat you have been waiting for. However, as interest rates continue to decrease investing money in a savings account may not always be the best answer. There are so many options when It comes to saving and building wealth. Some great strategies can include investing small amounts each month into a share portfolio, instead of putting the savings in the money box. The returns that can be achieved through capital growth, and income through dividends, can fasttrack the wealth accumulation journey. A longer-term strategy, and beneficial from a taxation standpoint, could be regular superannuation or investment bond contributions. Fortune follows the brave: I challenge you to try something different. Business owners need to beware in this fastchanging economy. You need to consider your offering regularly, and reinvent your business message and strategy to continue to appeal to your next customer. There are many options available to support growing businesses. Seeking and accessing various government grants to work on your business, or seeking specialist advice, are a couple things worth exploring. Don’t suffer in silence, find your next customer and build your business’s finances. As always keep smiling, take care and if you have any questions email me les@futureproof.com.au

How to
boost
your
productivity Feel like you aren’t making the most out of your workdays? Author, speaker and mentor, Donna McGeorge talks about staying focused and organised ow do you currently spend your workday? Like most leaders, the first thing you likely do is open your email and see what pops up. Then, before you know it, it’s 1pm and you’re still responding or reacting to requests, in between rushing from meeting to meeting, which means your ‘real work’ gets left to the evening. Many of these productivity problems come about because we are operating on autopilot. We don’t think about what, when or even why we are doing things; we just do them in the order in which the tasks came to us, or how they’re written on our to-do list. It can be very difficult to change settings that feel like they are hardwired. But you can do it. More importantly, there is good reason to do it. It involves maximizing the first two hours of your day, and every two hours after that.
Schedule valuable tasks first For most of us, our most productive time will be first thing in the morning. Then by the afternoon our body and brain will be ready to switch to some routine tasks. This is best explained by the work of Michael Smolensky and Lynne Lambert, published in their book The Body Clock Guide to Better Health, which describes a person’s typical circadian rhythm. For the majority of us our peak alertness is at 10am and our best coordination is at around 2.30pm. Hence, tasks that require attention and focus are best done in the morning, and repetitive tasks that require coordination are best done in the afternoon. Consider yourself a night owl? While the results vary from study to study, in a normal population only 10 to 21 per cent of people can survive on minimal sleep and working late into the early morning. And if you still need convincing, then in a 2016 study titled Diurnal Variations in Executives’ and Analysts’ Behaviour: Evidence from Conference Calls, researchers found that CEOs who had meetings about earnings with analysts and shareholders were more likely to be upbeat and positive in the mornings. The tone grew more negative as the day progressed. So now think: How much of your organisation’s value might be determined by those types of conversations?
Design your day by brainpower In his book Thinking, Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman describes the brain as having two systems. One that moves quickly and 41
It can be very difficult to change settings that feel like they are hardwired. But you can do it. More importantly, there is good reason to do it. makes snap judgements. It also doesn’t require much energy. And the other, which is slower, takes deeper thinking and uses a lot of energy. People feel tired or ‘brain dead’ if they have been using the second system a lot. Hence, we need to assess the amount of brainpower a task will require. Does it need deep thinking, concentration and focus (high intensity)? Or can you do it with a blindfold on and one hand behind your back (low intensity)? When it comes to making the greatest impact (remembering that we are at our best in the morning), filter your tasks according to this and the time of day that you do them, then watch your productivity soar.
4 tips for daily tasks
1. The first two hours High intensity/high impact tasks that directly and positively affect results and require a lot of attention, energy and focus. This is a leader’s most important work. 2. The second two hours High intensity/low impact tasks that require being in the service of others. Giving time to someone in your team to ‘bounce an idea off’ or something similar. 3. The third two hours Low intensity/low impact tasks that can be done while metaphorically sleeping because they are easy, and the stakes are low. These are things that are repetitive and routine in nature – like responding to email. 4. The fourth two hours Low intensity/high impact tasks that don’t require a lot of ‘heavy lifting’ brain-wise, but will have a positive impact: planning, maintenance, preparation. Basically, anything that sets a successful day tomorrow. August 2019

GET IT I SUCCESS
Get it’s Kathleen Loxton chats to Ben Hannant, NRL legend and 90.9 Sea FM’s beloved breakfast host, about family and life in the fast lane Kathleen: I hear that you are expecting your eighth child; in December I believe? Congratulations.
I grew up in a big family myself, so one thing my parents taught me was how to work.
Ben: Yes, Christmas Eve! Which will be pretty cool. It’s the perfect time for the perfect present. K: And what a present! It must be such a special time of the year for the family. B: Christmas day is fantastic, Christmas Eve is chaotic, but all is worth the reward. It’s a fantastic time of the year. All of our babies have been born a lot earlier in the year, so this will be something different, for my wife and me - we’re super excited.
Behind the mic with
Ben Hannant
K: What do you love the most about being a dad? B: I just love the whole process of growing up with your kids; I still feel like a young dad. The joy I get out of life is not just me doing something special, it’s seeing the kids learning and growing, and achieving things at school… that gives me a lot of satisfaction. K: How did you get started at 90.9 Sea FM? B: I was playing footie at the time with the North Queensland Cowboys, going in one day a week and doing the wrap-up of the game for the weekend. Then I got a phone call from one of the big bosses at Southern Cross Austereo, and he asked me if I was interested in doing a trial. I went to Brisbane, did the trial and went back to North Queensland, signed the contract to keep playing and Sea FM offered me the job. That’s when I had to decide: do I keep playing footie or do I go back home to the Gold Coast and take up the radio show? My body has taken a fair bashing from playing footie, and I’m born and bred in the Gold Coast, so the wife was happy and excited to come back home for us to raise our family. K: How did you and your wife meet? B: She’s originally from Sydney, but she moved to the Gold Coast when she was 14. We met straight away and became best friends, then we started dating at 16 and we’ve never looked back since. K: What’s one life lesson you always carry with you? B: I grew up in a big family myself, so one thing my parents taught me was how to work. We always believed that if we knew how to work, we’d be okay and be able to provide for a family one day. That work ethic is something that has really helped me out with my football career, and then at the station as well. If you’re willing to work hard anything is possible. K: I also wanted to ask about your charity projects. Can you tell us a little bit about that? B: Yes, the cycling one was called Biking for Bec. It was for a young lady on the coast, who is a mother of three, she lost one of her children – they have two young boys as well – and she’s struggling with brain cancer. We wanted to August 2019
help her and her family as much as we could. I’m not very good at doing too much other than physical challenges, so I decided to get on my bike and ride non-stop for 24 hours. It was an incredible experience, and the Gold Coast really got behind us… the support was outstanding, and we raised a lot of money. The biggest and best thing is that here in the Gold Coast people really genuinely care; they’re there for each other and you’re not alone… there’s always people there that want to help you when you’re at your lowest low, which is a fantastic thing to see. K: That is incredible. I know you’ve also tried 24 jobs in 24 hours? B: Yes, it came about because I’ve never had a “real job” before. When that came to light that’s when this was decided; so, 24 hours, 24 jobs and no sleep. We spent 45 minutes at each job, then had 15 minutes travel time. It was a great experience - I had to do things from labouring to childcare, to reading the news. What I noticed is how many people are really passionate about their jobs and like what they do. That’s the reason why our city is so successful, because so many people take pride in what they do. 46

GET IT I NETWORKING
5 ways to network like a pro Michelle Sales, highly sought-after speaker, trainer, coach, author and leadership expert, shares her tips on how to make the most of your work parties oes the very idea of networking, or talking to a bunch of strangers at an office party cause you to break into a sweat? Unfortunately, many of us would rather stay home than be forced to speak with our peers, teammates, colleagues, or worse yet, our boss. The trouble is that complete avoidance can do more harm than good to our confidence. Even this kind of social networking is still crucial if you want to step up in your career. As business tycoon Richard Branson put it,“Nobody can be successful alone”, and in our fast-moving business world, we all need people to help and support us. So, here are 6 tips to boost your confidence and help you network like a pro at your next party.
1. Reframe your mind The way we talk to ourselves determines how we think, with positive self-talk leading to a positive mindset. If our self-talk is negative, however, we can feel pretty bad about ourselves, especially when it comes to talking to new people. To get on top of your negative self-talk, you need to pay attention to what is going on in your head. Then change or re-frame your negative self-talk to something more positive or at least neutral. For example, from “I hate networking, I’ll never be any good at it,” to “I love a challenge. It’s time to push myself out of my comfort zone and meet some interesting new people. You never know what might come from it.”
2. Embrace silence Most of us rush to finish our point of view because we’re worried we will be interrupted and won’t get it all out. Or we think the other person is bored or disinterested if they haven’t engaged with us straight away. But silence isn’t your enemy; it can actually be a powerful confidence-projecting tool. Pauses help us to take in and understand someone else’s main point. In turn, the other person could be doing the same. This helps us to respond in a more considered way, rather than just rambling incoherent sentences back (often fuelled by the punch). Ironically, the ability to live with silences, whether of your own making or the other person’s, makes you appear more confident. August 2019

3. Check your body language Your body language is just as important as the words coming out of your mouth. According to Carol Kinsey Gorman, PhD, an executive coach and consultant in nonverbal communication, audiences perceive speakers to have more positive traits – such as warmth and energy – when they use a variety of gestures. While some physical gestures, such as fiddling with clothing or touching your hair, can distract or convey a lack of confidence, using your hands when you speak is a great way to communicate your excitement and knowledge.
4. Breathe We can learn a lot from yogi philosophy on breathing, and its ability to help us create stillness and manage our nerves. In fact, a period of quiet deep breathing causes blood pressure to drop – and to stay down for as long as 30 minutes – according to a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society. Breathing is at the heart of virtually every meditation practice. This is because paying attention to the breath brings us fully into the present. It slows our heart rate and forces us to focus on the here and now – just try it and see.
“Confidence is not about never feeling afraid or nervous or anxious. It is about not letting those feelings stop you.” 5. Master fear Fear tends to manifest itself as: What if I fail? What if people criticise me or judge me? What if people reject me? In The Confidence Code, journalists Katty Kay and Claire Shipman define confidence as “being prepared to fail”. This means that confidence is not about never feeling afraid or nervous or anxious. It is about not letting those feelings stop you. So, when you’re networking, remember that self-confidence is not the absence of fear, but the mastery of it. And the best way to master it is to face it head on. Just give it a go and learn from what doesn’t go so well, rather than beating yourself up over it.
