Letter from Nicole — Editor —
This week I listened to the Louis Theroux podcast interview with the formidable Germaine Greer.
Love her or hate her, it’s impossible to argue against the incredible impact she’s had on popular society, and the feminist movement in particular.
It’s also difficult not to admire her tenacity and boldness in continuing to say exactly what she thinks without fear of being shouted down – “shout away,” as she told Theroux.
Critiquing the views of those in the public eye is an important and necessary thing, and Greer has indeed said much to court controversy, even cause offence.
What I can’t stand though, is when Greer’s critics site her age as the reason why she should pipe down.
You’re too old. Outdated. Expired.
You might object to her views, but no one should be objecting to her age.
In my view, the only time a person expires, is when they leave this Earth.
Until then, not only do we have the right to live with fever, but we should embrace getting older, consider each stage a new chapter, a chance to try new things, achieve new goals, and experience something fresh.
I read a quote recently:
Normalise finding love in your 40s.
Normalise chasing your dreams in your 30s. Noramlise finding purpose in your 50s. Normalise taking risks in your 20s.
This, I love. And I feel each of those elements are interchangeable. You can do anything at any age. And you should.
This month, we’re all about finding your purpose at any age.
So, whatever decade you’re currently enjoying, I say, buy the dress, take the plunge, quit the job, go on the date or take the trip.
The time is now.

Embracing the Power of Today: Life Begins Now
— by Dee Hardy — Shifting Tides Counselling
In the symphony of existence, today stands as the crescendo, the zenith of our experiences. Life, in its essence, is a continuum of moments, each offering a fresh canvas for us to paint our realities upon. Titled “Life Begins Today,” this mantra is not merely a catchphrase but a transformative philosophy, urging individuals to relinquish the shackles of the past and embrace the boundless potential of the present moment.
Central to this ethos is the concept of detachment, a therapeutic process rooted in letting go of elements that no longer serve our well-being. Just as a gardener prunes dead branches to allow new growth, we too must shed attachments and co-dependencies that hinder our personal evolution. By meticulously crafting a “policies and procedures manual” for ourselves, we gain a deeper understanding of our desires, boundaries, and aspirations, paving the way for a more fulfilling journey ahead.
Yet, detaching from the past is no facile feat. Memories, relationships, and ingrained habits often cling to us like shadows, impeding our progress. Here, the adage “There are three solutions to every problem” offers invaluable guidance. We must confront our predicaments with courage: accept what cannot be changed, muster the resolve to alter what is within our control, and bravely bid farewell to what no longer aligns with our authenticity.
Therapeutic practices such as mindfulness and cognitivebehavioural techniques empower individuals to navigate this intricate terrain. Through mindfulness, we cultivate an acute awareness of the present moment, untethered from the burdens of yesterday or the uncertainties of tomorrow. Meanwhile, cognitive-behavioural strategies equip us with the tools to identify maladaptive thought patterns and replace them with constructive alternatives, fostering resilience in the face of life’s myriad challenges.
Moreover, evidence-based approaches underscore the efficacy of positive lifestyle changes in fostering holistic well-being. Nurturing habits that prioritise self-care, such as regular exercise, nourishing nutrition, and restorative sleep, fortifies our physical and mental resilience, enabling us to seize each day with vitality and purpose.
As we embark on this odyssey of self-discovery, let us heed the wisdom encapsulated in the mantra, “Life Begins Today.” Yesterday fades into memory, tomorrow remains a dream, but today, this very moment, is our life’s canvas. With courage, introspection, and a steadfast commitment to growth, we unlock the infinite possibilities that await us in the boundless expanse of the present.

At Any Age
At 84, where many might be slowing down, May McPhail is still taking life by the reins. We sat down with May, TriCare Runaway Bay Retirement Resident and much more, to talk about her life achievements including a pilot’s license, a PhD in foreign policy and creating a life of adventure, excitement and love.
At the age of 60 you decided to do something totally new and attain your PhD in Australian Foreign Policy – what was that experience like?
I was part way through a Bachelor’s degree when I married, and (as you did in those days!) I put my studies on hold. However, I loved studying and I was determined to complete my studies after my three children had become more independent.
It was a long – and sometimes lonely –3-year process. I remember sitting in my home studying on weekends while other people were out enjoying themselves. Fortunately, I love learning and really enjoyed the process with the help of the wonderful supervisors at Griffith University, and my fellow students.
When my husband’s health deteriorated in 2009, we moved into the TriCare Retirement Community so he could call for assistance if needed while I was at work – the staff have been incredible, championing me to continue to pursue my career – this allowed me to continue my teaching and research up until I was 78.
In your next phase of life, you returned to teaching as a lecturer – what energises you about this kind of work?
I was a Sunday School teacher from 12 years old, and I knew from that moment it was for me! While lecturing, I really enjoyed the contact with my students –my aim was to engage them in learning for life, and impart the importance of critical thinking. I remember at one of my Government Business Relation lectures (to some 300 students) asking the group, “Why are you here?”
Eventually, a voice up the back of the theatre replied, “We have to be, it’s a compulsory subject.” I replied, “Ok, my job is to ensure you know this topic, and to make sure you actually enjoy learning about it.”I put my all into the role!
Meet Gold Coast Local May McPhail
In 1974, you obtained your pilot’s license – was this always on your to-do list?
My husband had gained his pilot’s licence and he decided that he (we!) would fly a small plane from Victoria, Vancouver Island, to San Francisco. We took off behind a snow plough with our three young children in the back seat. After some time I handed him a mint and he began to choke and cough – it was at that very moment that I decided I must learn to fly! I got hooked, and particularly loved aerobatics.
Giving back is important to you, how do you incorporate this into daily life?
I try to be positive and always smile with other residents and staff at TriCare, many of whom are facing health challenges. I have been a member of Zonta International – a worldwide organisation working together to improve the lives of women and girls, for almost 40 years and I am looking forward to the International Convention in Brisbane in June this year.
For you, it seems age truly is just a number – what would you say to a woman in her 40s who is looking to change her life?
Give yourself credit for what you have already achieved and ask yourself, “What would I really like to do with the rest of my life?” Is there something you have always thought about doing? Most importantly, find something you would really enjoy.

Body Positive Life Hacks for Every Age
OUR TOP 5 TIPS
We’ve all heard the phrase, “You’ll look back and regret not embracing the body you have today!”, but this kind of sentiment is certainly easier said than done. With research suggesting that more than 80 per cent of Australian women are dissatisfied with their bodies to some degree, we’re sharing some expert advice and our Get It Guide to help you embrace your body today, tomorrow and long into the future.

BUCK THE BEAUTY STANDARDS
ASK THE EXPERT:
Missy Robinson is a Gold Coast based mindset and wellness influencer. Having recently achieved her own physical and mental transformation, Missy is a committed advocate for body positivity for all, so we asked for her expert take on embracing our bodies in a meaningful way.
How do you think our appreciation of our bodies as women changes as we age?
As women, our appreciation of our bodies often blossoms with age. We shed the insecurities of youth and start defining beauty on our own terms, instead of conforming to societies and often the media’s narration. With time, we learn to feel more embodied, marvelling at the amazing capacities and resilience of the female form.
Trends in body type have shifted and evolved along with societal norms; the “must-have” physique of today likely wasn’t ‘en vogue’ 100 years ago, so arm yourself with the knowledge that the media will tell one story, but reality tells another.
If you find yourself regularly comparing your body to that of celebrities or influencers, consider curating the online content you consume and finding accounts that match your style, body type, and goals.
REAL SELF-LOVE
‘Self-love’ can be thrown out there so much that it loses meaning. Self-love doesn’t mean you’re constantly staring at your own reflection or repeating a cliche mantra; it comes with taking your body as it is today, flaws and all, and accepting it.
If body positivity feels like a stretch for you right away, consider body neutrality. You don’t have to love your body every day, but don’t spend time tearing yourself down either. 1
3 4 5
BODY GOALS VS. BODY HEALTH
If you’re looking to make a change in your lifestyle for better health, that’s always something to celebrate. Before you kick off a new healthy habits regime, ask yourself the why behind the action.
Are you up at 5.00am for that pilates class because you love the strength and flexibility it provides, or are you just waiting to drop that extra kilogram?
AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE
Your body carries you through your life, so think of it as your home and care for it accordingly. Appreciate what your body helps you to accomplish each day, what experiences you’ve had with it, and how you’ve grown and developed from a child to an adult. It’s harder to talk negatively to yourself if you’re feeling connected and thankful for your physical form.
LEADING BY EXAMPLE
For many women, negative self-image starts at a young age – perhaps it’s a comment from a family member or a crash diet regimen before a big event. Consider the kind of person that you’d like to have around you as a mentor and how your words can impact others.
Tell us about your own recent body transformation. My transformation went far beyond shedding 60kg; it was an entire mindset shift that ultimately improved my mental health. After countless quick fixes that proved unsustainable, I knew any lasting change had to be a lifestyle overhaul done the healthy way. There were no timelines, just a commitment to reaching a state of good wellbeing. Being happy and healthy is my focus and my motivation.
What are your personal top 5 tips for women to start thinking more positively about their bodies?
• Appreciate your body for its functionality rather than judging its appearance.
• Expose yourself to body positive content that makes you feel good.
• Find physical activities you genuinely enjoy rather than punishing yourself with exercise.
• Actively question negative thought patterns and beliefs about your body.
• Prioritise self care.

Love is Ageless
Two Queensland women are proving age is no barrier to looking for love, even if it means learning to date in the modern era. 58-year-old Brisbane residents, Carole Haddad and Lisa Young, have embarked on a quest to find their soulmates, taking a ‘swipe’ at online dating for the first time.
They are among thousands of older Aussies looking for love online, with three in five singles over 50 choosing to look for a potential partner through a dating site. The ease and safety that online dating offers seniors is not only comforting but also a great, self-paced option for getting to know someone new.
The owner of an award-winning hair salon in West End, Carole, has lived a remarkable life but is yet to find ‘the one’. Growing up in a Lebanese convent, navigating single motherhood, and overcoming cancer, she has experienced triumphs and challenges and is now focused on her newest chapter of finding love, cyber style.

“ CAROLE AND LISA ARE STARS OF THE NEW EIGHT-PART TV SERIES AGELESS, AIRING ON THE NINE NETWORK THIS MONTH. ” GET IT I LIVING
“I was excited about dating in my 50’s and finding a man. For a woman like me who’s never had a husband, I knew I had to approach things differently. My generation isn’t used to looking for someone online, but I’m getting into it, and it’s surprisingly fun and liberating,” said Carole.
“Even menopause hasn’t stopped me from wanting to date. I’ve recently gone through it and found online dating helped—it put a big spring in my step.
“Growing up in a convent was a unique experience. My day consisted of waking up, praying, going to breakfast, praying, then going to learn, praying. The nuns didn’t teach us about relationships or even encourage us to have one.”
Carole, who beat breast cancer 12 years ago, has a wonderfully positive outlook, believing every day needs to be lived no matter what stage of life.
“You live every day, but you only die once, and being over 50 isn’t a time to stop living; it’s a time to change and try new things. Like dating, even if we’re not tech-savvy, we put ourselves out there and try it because life is meant to be lived to the fullest with no limits,” said Carole.
“It’s not how many storms you survive; it’s how good you dance in the rain, and I rock-n-roll! Hurdles come and go, but it’s not about how much you hurt; it’s about stepping out from them.
“I’ve had such support from everyone with this experience; they’re so excited for me. My friends are just like a Wonderbra; they keep me up and lifted. That’s what you want.”
Carole and Lisa are stars of the new eightpart TV series Ageless, airing on the Nine Network this month. The heartwarming show by over-50s lifestyle resort developer GemLife explores the lives of remarkable people over 50, challenging age-old stereotypes and inspiring others to rethink what it means to ‘grow old’ while showing a zest for life and thirst for new experiences at any age.
Starring alongside Carole in episode three, ‘Love at Any Age’, is home stylist Lisa, whose story of love, loss, and redesigning herself in her fifties is inspirational.
Overcoming divorce, Lisa went on to find the love of her life only to lose him six years later, but now she’s ready to put herself out there on her journey to love again.
“We get thrown curve balls, and we need to pick ourselves up and reorientate, which isn’t easy, but it is necessary. I want to share my experiences with the view of giving other people facing difficulties some inspiration,” said Lisa.
Navigating life’s challenges and restarting after 50 is not an easy task, but through strength and determination, Lisa transformed herself, continuing to move forward and embrace opportunities.
“I was on the backburner having lost my fiancé and had to learn how to change my life, and so I picked up, relocated, and reinvented myself in my fifties,” said Lisa.
“When things happen, you hit rock bottom and you don’t know where you’re going; you just have to get up and keep going.”
As part of her Ageless episode, Lisa undergoes a makeover, and her focus turns from styling homes to styling herself. She enjoys her ‘Cinderella moment’ so much; it reinvigorates her confidence, and she feels ready to hit the dating scene and meet someone special.
“My makeover experience felt incredible. It made me aware of what I should be looking for when presenting myself. I now look in the mirror and think I want to help other people, but first I need to help myself,” said Lisa.
“I’ve only just joined online dating sites, and it’s challenging but nice. It’s fun to go on coffee dates and meet new people. Hopefully we’ll move onto a movie date.”
For Carole and Lisa, their quest for love is exciting and new, and as the opening line of Frank Sinatra’s crooner hit goes, ‘Fairytales can come true; it can happen to you if you’re young at heart,’ these two ladies are certainly on their path to romance.

Don’t be a slave to ‘Menstrual Misery’
If you suffer from heavy painful periods you should read this.
Do you..
• Feel tired all the time?
• Suffer from Anemia?
• Have days off work or have no energy to go to the gym?
• Have no sex drive?
• Feel like your periods are taking over your life and feel like there is no solution?
FACTS:
• No woman should suffer heavy periods – they are not normal!
Perception: “they are normal and I should put up with them”
• Myth: an iron infusion will solve the problem
So what should you do? Get help to find out why this is happening to you.
And don’t be afraid of the word ‘hysterectomy’... here’s why...
Seek Help Now:
If you experience what is known as ‘menstrual misery’ or heavy painful periods you should be seeking help now.
Available Treatments:
• Oral contraceptive pill: If appropriate, and especially in the younger age group, taken continuously it can result in the majority of women having no periods at all.
Mirena:
This intrauterine device is inserted into the womb and results in a significant reduction in blood loss in the majority and complete loss of periods in a significant number of women for up to five years before the Mirena has to be replaced.
Seek a Referral:
If your heavy painful periods persist despite all best efforts, a referral to a specialist is required.
Surgical Options:
If these conservative treatments don’t work, you should encourage your GP to refer you to a gynecologist who will take a detailed history, perform a clinical exam to rule out any sinister cause for heavy bleeding before offering surgical options, usually in the form of an endometrial ablation or recommending a laparoscopic hysterectomy.
Modern Hysterectomy:
A modern-day total laparoscopic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive procedure involving three, 5mm incisions in the abdomen which heal very quickly, with most women walking within hours of surgery and driving after a week.
GET IT April 2024 20
If you have any questions, please contact our team at info@drgraemewalker.com.au
The Difference:
A major misconception is that most women assume the ovaries are taken out at the time of surgery, putting them into the “dreaded menopause”. This is not the case, as most hysterectomies only involve the removal of the uterus and cervix. In most cases, the ovaries remain, so women don’t go into ‘premature menopause’. Menopause usually happens several years later when nature takes its course.
The Benefits:
• Stay for Recovery:
While you can usually go home the same day, at Gold Coast Private Hospital you can stay for a day or two, so you can get a well-deserved rest or some “me time” with excellent food before returning home.
The Result:
The result of this type of hysterectomy is no more Pap smears; eliminated risk of cervical and endometrial cancer; and reduction in the risk of ovarian cancer.
• The Advantages:
For those who have been long-time sufferers of menstrual misery, the advantages of hysterectomy are so much more – iron stores return to normal, energy is increased, debilitating period pain disappears, no more days off work or missed gym sessions.
Be Aware:
As is the case with any medical condition, surgery should always be the last resort. But, if you have finished having children and have had no success with non-surgical methods, don’t be afraid of hysterectomy. For eligible patients, and when done by a skilled surgeon, it can completely change your life for the better.

The every day items making your anxiety worse
By Dr Marina Christov founder of House of Life
Studies show that 1 in 6 Australians are struggling with anxiety. While there’s no one cause, research shows the everincreasing use of screens in our daily lives is a major contributor.
But it’s not just excessive scrolling and overstimulating content. It’s also the devices themselves, specificially, the blue light they emit.
What are the sources of blue light?
The sun! Prior to technology, it was the only source of blue light. LED lights produce an artificial blue light. They are used in flatscreen TVs, laptops, smartphones, tablets and fluorescent lights.
What effect does blue light have on our bodies?
Blue light tells our bodies that it is daytime. The blue light from the sun peaks at midday and reduces as the day progresses until sunset, when we are exposed to more red, yellow, and orange light, and then darkness. The red light of the sun signals to our bodies that it’s time to start preparing for sleep. But what happens when our bodies are exposed to blue light in the evening or into the night? Disruption can occur in the following areas:
• Circadian Rhythm: Blue light exposure, especially in the evening and nighttime, can disrupt the body’s natural circadian rhythm by suppressing the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep. Poor sleep quality and disrupted sleep patterns have been linked to increased anxiety levels.
• Stress Response: Prolonged exposure to blue light has been associated with increased cortisol levels, which is a hormone released in response to stress. While we need it in the morning to bring about wakefulness, increased cortisol levels can contribute to higher levels of anxiety.
• Emotional Regulation: Research indicates that blue light exposure, particularly in the evening, can alter brain activity in areas involved in emotional processing. Disruptions in emotional regulation could potentially contribute to increased feelings of anxiety or exacerbate existing anxiety symptoms.
Tips to minimise the negative effects of Blue Light:
• Blue Light Boundaries: Experiment with setting some new boundaries around screen time. A good place to start would be to choose one evening a week where you swap out your evening screen time for something else that facilitates connection or internal peace.
• Filter the Light: There are apps and settings on many devices that make it possible to reduce some blue light emitted from the screen. Blue-lightblocking glasses can also reduce blue-light exposure. While they do not replace healthy screen habits, they may be useful when worn while looking at screens in the evening and at night.
• Acupuncture: Stress can disrupt the flow of energy (Qi) in the body. Acupuncture can be used to balance this circulation of energy, resulting in a calmer state of being. It also has a positive effect on the autonomic nervous system, which is a key player in stress regulation.

Embrace a lifestyle change
In the realm of health and wellness, the term “diet” often conjures up images of shortlived fads and unsustainable restrictions. Indeed, the statistics surrounding the longterm success of diets can be disheartening, with a staggering 95 per cent failure rate observed five years post-diet. It’s a concerning reality.
What’s often missing from the equation is a focus on education and the cultivation of sustainable lifestyle changes. Rather than subjecting ourselves to drastic and unsustainable alterations, the key lies in making gradual adjustments that become seamlessly integrated into our daily lives.
When individuals embark on diets characterised by extreme and unrealistic changes, the outcome is often predictable: initial enthusiasm followed by eventual
abandonment. This not only disrupts our metabolism but also takes a toll on our confidence when we inevitably experience setbacks.
The antidote lies in adopting a mindset geared towards permanent lifestyle changes. While it may not yield immediate results, committing to gradual adjustments ensures long-term success without the dreaded rebound effect that plagues so many.
Consider implementing small changes each week, such as increasing vegetable intake for added fibre, monitoring daily food consumption, upping water intake, or moderating alcohol consumption.
These incremental modifications, sustained over time, can lead to profound transformations.
Above all, it’s crucial to align our actions with our long-term vision for health and well-being. If an approach feels unsustainable in the months or years ahead,
it’s wise to reassess and pivot towards a strategy that better fits our lifestyle.
By embracing the journey and crafting a realistic plan tailored to our individual needs, we pave the way for remarkable, lasting results. Remember, it’s not just about a temporary fix—it’s about cultivating a lifestyle that nourishes and sustains us for years to come.

Paris
in the Springtime
If you’re a fan of the show Emily in Paris, or even just romance, delicious food, art, and architecture, not to mention fashion, then you’ll love our guide to exploring the city of light.
Words: Charmaine Yabsley
A trip to Paris is many things: beautiful, thrilling, exhilarating… and overwhelming. Rather than trying to cover everything, it can be simpler (on your feet and your wallet) to focus on a specific area (called arrondissements) or the main attractions you want to explore.
A visit to Paris isn’t complete without taking time in the Louvre, with more than 35,000 artworks and artifacts from prehistory to today. Top tip: Book your ticket in advance and head to the Carrousel du Louvre entrance to bypass the queue. (www.louvre.fr) Don’t miss a visit to the Centre Pompidou, (known by locals as Beaubourg), a striking building of industrial pipes and gleaming glass, granting visitors wonderous sights of the city, while the interior offers 1000-piece collection of contemporary art. (Family tickets available: www.centrepompidou.fr) The Hôtel Salé has been described as “the grandest, most extraordinary, if not the most extravagant, of the grand Parisian houses of the 17th century”. Home to the world’s largest collection of works by Pablo Picasso, the Musée Picasso-Paris is a must. (museepicassoparis.fr). If you only have time for one more museum, make it the Musee d’Orsay, the second-most visited museum in Paris. Even younger kids will enjoy pieces from pop culture and artists such as Renoir and Monet. Start at the lower-ground floor and make your way upwards until you arrive at Café Campana, outside the Impressionist Gallery. Located in the heart of the former train station, the glass clock wall will transport you back to another era. Pre-booking is a must. (musee-orsay.fr)
For any budding archaeologists, the National Museum of Natural History is filled with exhibitions for the entire family. The main attraction is the permanent display of life-size elephants and giraffes, and there are ever-changing temporary exhibitions too. (mnhn.fr)
What to see
While a visit to the top of the Eiffel Tower is spectacular, it’s expensive and the queues can be long. Instead, pack a picnic (baguettes and cheese anyone?), and enjoy the impressive 1889-built wrought-iron structure from below. Jules Verne, the second-floor restaurant, is Michelinstarred but expensive, although you can sip bubbles at the tiny Champagne bar. If you are determined to ride to the top, book well in advance (toureiffel.paris). And don’t miss the light show that takes place from 8pm to 1am, and sparkles for the first five minutes of every hour.
Another fabulous experience is to walk the length of the Champs-Elysees, ending at the Arc de Triomphe. The views from the top are impressive, and you can either climb the 300 steps or arrive by elevator for far-reaching views of the city. (www.paris-arc-de-triomphe.fr)

Where to shop
After watching the chic fashions parading past you, you may feel that your wardrobe needs a little je ne sais quoi. The Rue Saint Honoré is lined with labels such as Gucci and Chanel, but you can also find most labels at the department stores including Le Bon Marché, Printemps, and Galleries Lafayette. The 750 000 square foot of Galleries Lafayette Haussmann is in the 9th arrondissement and features a striking domed roof with stained glass windows by master glassmaker Jacques Gruber. The eighth floor is a little-known secret where you have – free! – access to a rooftop terrace. The new kid on the block, the Samaritaine Paris Pont-Neuf is also a fashion-lovers’ delight. Head to the Cheval Blanc hotel (which also houses the Dior Spa): here you’ll discover the rooftop bar Céleste contained within a glass bubble, suspended between the sky and the city. (chevalblanc.com)
Also make time for the architectural gems of the many covered shopping arcades. Our favourites were the Galerie VéroDodat, with its beautiful marble paving, magnificent glass roof and chic art déco and furniture boutiques, and Galerie Vivienne. With its neo-classical style, elegant glass roof, and imposing dome, it’s Paris’ most famous arcade, challenged only by the spectacular Paris Passage du Grand-Cerf.
Where to eat
Almost everywhere you choose to stop and eat in Paris is a foodies delight. Remember not all meals need to be expensive. The covered alleyway of the Latin Quarter in the 9th arrondissement offers first-class dining establishments, some so small, they fit just a few tables.
Pink Mamma is hugely popular, and for good reason, as the Italian food is as impressive as the décor. After dinner, head down to the basement. There, behind the ‘No Entry’ sign is a wonderfully whimsical speakeasy (bigmammagroup.com). La Maison Rose, with its traditional rustic fare, is one of the most beautiful restaurants located on one of the most beautiful streets in all the city. (lamaisonrose-montmartre.com). Then while away the hours as Hemingway and Picasso once did, at Café de Flore. Snag yourself a table on the famous terrasse and watch the parade on the Boulevard Saint-Germain. For the perfect hot chocolate, line up at Angelinas, a Parisian institution. Be prepared to wait, as the tea rooms don’t accept bookings. Top tip: we found the café at Luxembourg Gardens quieter, and there’s outdoor seating too. Or rest your feet and head to one of the many beautiful Parisian parks, such as the Jardin des Tuileries, between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde (look for Rodin’s iconic “Le Baiser” – “The Kiss” – on the West Terrace.) There’s also a Ferris wheel, perfect for the kids after a day of sightseeing.
Where to stay
Getting around
Much of the beauty of Paris can be found in the tiniest of details or in the most unexpected places, so explore as much as you can on foot. Head to the Seine and discover the bookstalls – Bouquinistes –along the river from Ile Saint Louise to the Louvre. If you’re short on time, use the metro. Buy a Navigo Easy Pass – it’s around 27 per cent cheaper than single tickets. (parisjetaime.com) Or hop on a glasscovered Batobus (batobus.com) for another perspective of the city. You can stay on the boat for an entire loop (around two hours) or hop on and off at any of the nine stops along the Seine. If you prefer wheels, book a bike at a Velib station (www.velib-metropole.fr) – just watch the traffic!
Choosing a hotel in Paris can feel as overwhelming as choosing your itinerary! Location is everything. The Hotel Novotel Paris Tour Eiffel is just a 20-minute walk to the main sights and on the Seine (and near the Princess Diana memorial). Most impressive of all is the view of the Eiffel tower. We booked a Junior Suite on the 30th floor, with its bedroom, bathroom, lounge – which turned into a sofa bed for our two children – and did I mention the view? There’s an outdoor swimming pool – the perfect way to cool off after a day of sightseeing (you need to book the pool in advance). You can choose breakfast inclusions and enjoy meals and cocktails in one of the several in-house restaurants. The staff speak English and are extremely helpful with itineraries and city tips, plus there’s kids’ entertainment too. Book www.accor.com
