5 signs that relationshipa is headingoff track

law

As a divorce lawyer, I’ve found that while each marriage has its own unique challenges, certain common issues frequently cause couples to seek help. These recurring patterns offer insights into universal relationship struggles and a prompt for when to seek support to get the relationship back on track. Here are 5 signs that a relationship might be heading off track:

Less communication

In long-term relationships, routines can make partners assume they know how each other feels, leading to a stagnant cycle. Often, this causes one partner to suppress their emotions or issues, avoiding disruptions to the established routine. This lack of regular checkins can result in poor communication and unresolved feelings.

Tech disconnect

Advanced technology can help couples stay connected through video calls and photo sharing, but it can also create problems. Overuse of devices can make individuals feel disconnected from their partners, who might be more focused on their screens than on the person right in front of them. Dating apps and social media technology often add stress to relationships, leaving people feeling insecure about their partners’ activities on their phones. Many clients tell me they feel they’re competing for their partners’ attention against smart devices.

We often see that once a relationship has lasted for a good period of time, people’s interests can start to change. It is normal to have changing interests; however, if you start to feel you don’t want to share these with your partner or vice versa and you don’t care to support your partner’s new interests, this is when we can begin to see some tension in the relationship.

Feelings of resentment

Typically, once kids are involved, we see couples starting to feel a sense of resentment with an imbalance of parent duties. Once kids have arrived, the roles of the partnership change and they can start to feel one-sided with a change in emotional, physical, and mental support from one party in combination with a lack of support and time for each other.

Changing values

In today’s economy, many couples are feeling the financial pinch due to rising living costs. Conflicting financial priorities or spending habits can strain relationships, but setting a shared budget and financial goals can help reduce this stress. When one partner makes major financial decisions without consulting the other, it can damage trust in the relationship.

What

can you do to help?

If you feel an emotional gap with your partner, start with an open conversation without distractions. Listen with empathy and validate each other’s feelings. If you have separated and are needing help to navigate the pathway forward, you can ask your questions in the Lunch with a Lawyer Facebook group.

Letter from Nicole

The most magical season of all is here – already! It’s the season of fairy lights, family gatherings, and, let’s be honest, sheer exhaustion. By the time December 25 rolls around, many of us are running on fumes. Between the endless shopping lists and last-minute wrapping marathons, the joy of the season can sometimes feel buried under a mountain of tinsel and stress.

But the thing about Christmas chaos is it’s temporary. And nestled just a week later is the antidote to the overwhelm — New Year’s Day.

There’s something so refreshing about flipping the calendar to January. After the flurry of family commitments and festive indulgence, New Year’s offers the perfect excuse to pause, exhale, and take stock. It’s a clean slate — a chance to let go of the clutter (both physical and emotional) that piled up in the previous year.

For those of us who shoulder the invisible load of holiday planning, making sure everyone else’s needs are met, the New Year invites us to turn that care and attention inward.

What truly matters? That’s the question I find myself asking every January 1. Not just in the grand, existential sense — though that’s important too — but in the day-to-day details of how I spend my time, energy, and focus.

Are there commitments I’ve been holding onto out of habit rather than joy? Relationships that could use a little more (or less) attention? Goals I’ve neglected because life got in the way?

This is the beauty of the New Year: it’s not about becoming a new person but about realigning with what feels most important. Maybe that’s prioritising your health, finally learning to say “no” without guilt, or carving out time for something that fills your soul, like writing, painting, or simply enjoying a quiet cup of tea.

January whispers a promise: you don’t have to do it all. You just have to focus on what matters most.

So, as the wrapping paper is cleared away and the ornaments are boxed up for another year, take a moment to embrace the stillness of the New Year. Let it be your permission to reset, refocus, and step into the months ahead with intention and grace. Because, after all, the best gift you can give yourself is a little space to breathe.

Are you a People Pleaser? How to Break Free

In a world where social approval often feels like currency, many of us find ourselves entangled in the web of people pleasing. But what exactly is people pleasing, and why do we do it? More importantly, how can we break free from this exhausting cycle? Let’s delve into these questions and explore 3 techniques to reclaim our happiness.

Understanding People Pleasing

People pleasing is a behavioural pattern where we prioritise the approval and acceptance of others over our own needs and desires. It can stem from a deepseated fear of rejection, criticism, or conflict that drives us to seek validation by doing or giving to others, even at the cost of our own wellbeing and true feelings. The action of people pleasing often leads to resentment, burnout, and a loss of self-esteem. Like white ants in a house that chew away a house’s foundations, people pleasing erodes our confidence and self-worth.

“ NO ONE RESPECTS A PEOPLE-PLEASER! ”

Why Do We Do It?

The roots of people pleasing may be traced to childhood, where conditional love, praise, and acceptance trained us to believe that only by meeting others’ expectations, we wouldn’t endure the pain of rejection. Rather, we replaced fear with the desire to fit in and the sense of security that gives us.

The challenge comes though when we people please and put others needs and wishes above our own. This can lead to underlying feelings of resentment, being unfulfilled in relationships, and not feeling respected.

One of the most profound realisations that can jolt us out of the habit of people pleasing is understanding and feeling the following truth deeply:

No one respects a people-pleaser!

Ironically, the very reason we engage in people-pleasing behaviour is because we crave respect.

If hearing that wasn’t enough to create an instant change in your psyche, then consider these 3 techniques to break free:

1. Set Boundaries: Establishing clear boundaries is crucial in combating people pleasing tendencies. Practice saying ‘no’ when a request compromises your values, energy levels, or wellbeing. Communicate your boundaries assertively yet respectfully, i.e., “I appreciate you trusting me enough to babysit your son. Unfortunately, that date does not work for me.” You don’t need to provide an explanation for your reasoning or overexplain anything. Make a decision and find a way to say no with ease and grace.

2. Practice Self-Compassion: Cultivate self-compassion by treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding you offer others. Acknowledge that perfection is unrealistic and that mistakes are opportunities for growth. Self-compassion strengthens resilience and self-esteem, therefore reducing the need for external validation. An easy way to create selfcompassion is to ask yourself, “If this were my child or best friend in this situation, what advice would I give them right now?”

3. Seek Support: Find a therapist you feel a rapport with who can not only provide encouragement and perspective but can pass on their professional wisdom and workshop ideas that are comfortable for you.

In the end, breaking free from people pleasing isn’t just about asserting yourself; it’s about honouring your inner voice and embracing the power of feeling good. This is your one true precious life, and it’s your time now to flourish.

“THE REPERCUSSIONS OF WEAPONIZED INCOMPETENCE ARE DAMAGING.”

Have you heard of Weaponized Incompetence?

IT’S MORE COMMON THAN YOU THINK.

Weaponized incompetence, often seen as a form of passive manipulation, is a harmful behaviour where individuals feign ignorance or incompetence to avoid responsibilities. This tactic is prevalent in various relationships—whether at home, in the workplace, or among friends—shifting the burden onto others. By pretending they can’t perform tasks effectively, these individuals manipulate situations, making others feel obligated to take over.

WHAT ACTUALLY IS IT?

At its core, weaponized incompetence involves intentionally underperforming or pretending to be incapable. For instance, a partner might insist they “don’t know how” to clean the house properly, forcing their significant other to take on the bulk of the chores. Similarly, in a professional setting, a colleague may claim not to understand a task, leaving others to pick up the slack. This deliberate avoidance of contribution creates frustration and resentment, leading to an imbalance in relationships.

SOME EXAMPLES

Weaponized incompetence can manifest in various ways.

• Household Tasks: One partner may claim they cannot cook or manage chores, pushing their partner to handle these responsibilities alone.

• Childcare: A parent may pretend they don’t know how to change a diaper or help with homework, leaving the other parent to take on these duties.

• Work responsibilities: An employee might feign ignorance about completing a project, resulting in colleagues taking over to meet deadlines.

In all these scenarios, the manipulator benefits by avoiding tasks, while others bear the burden of increased workloads.

WHY IT HAPPENS

The motivations for weaponized incompetence often stem from laziness, a desire for comfort, or a reluctance to learn new skills. Sometimes, it reflects an unwillingness to challenge traditional power dynamics, such as when a man avoids housework, believing it to be “women’s work.” Other times, it’s merely a strategy to evade work by exaggerating one’s inability to perform a task.

This passive manipulation can lead to significant strain on relationships, as it allows individuals to dodge direct confrontation while appearing to “try” but fall short. It complicates the ability of others to address the behaviour without sounding accusatory.

IMPACT ON RELATIONSHIPS

The repercussions of weaponized incompetence are damaging. In personal relationships, it leads to an unfair distribution of chores, causing one partner to feel overwhelmed and undervalued. In the workplace, it can disrupt team dynamics, leaving others feeling burdened and frustrated by taking on someone else’s responsibilities.

ADDRESSING THE ISSUE

To combat weaponized incompetence, clear communication and boundarysetting are crucial. In personal relationships, have open discussions about the division of labour and express frustrations about imbalances. In professional settings, holding colleagues accountable for their tasks and refraining from consistently picking up their slack is essential. Addressing the issue directly ensures responsibilities are clearly assigned and that everyone is held to the same standards.

Weaponized incompetence is a form of passive manipulation that allows individuals to shirk responsibilities while burdening others. Recognising and confronting this behaviour through open communication and accountability is vital for maintaining healthier, more balanced relationships. By addressing this subtle manipulation, individuals can work towards equitable partnerships and improved dynamics at home and work.

Hello Summer! Prepping for a New Year of Connection & Growth

Ah, summer! The season of sunshine, laughter, and a slower pace to soak up the warmth with those closest to us. As a family therapist, mediator, and reunification specialist, I see firsthand how the holidays present the perfect opportunity to reconnect, set new goals, and bring healing moments into focus.

Summer can be a powerful reset button, offering families time to realign their priorities and prepare for a fulfilling new year. I encourage families to take this season as a chance to pause and look at what they want to nurture in their relationships. Whether it’s planning family activities that build connection,

setting achievable goals to reinforce healthy communication, or even just finding time for uninterrupted fun together, summer is the time to sow seeds for the year ahead.

As we lean into this season of togetherness, think about little traditions you can create, whether that’s a weekly family meal, a summer reading challenge, or setting aside time for meaningful conversations. These moments are small but deeply impactful, and they help prepare us for the inevitable challenges that come with a new year.

So, let’s embrace the sunshine, relish the laughter, and make room for memories that will nourish us all year long. Here’s to a summer of peace, joy, and intentional steps toward stronger relationships!

Restoring Saltwater Creek: A Community Success OUR WATERWAYS ARE IN TROUBLE…

As the urban areas around our local waterways continue to grow, so does the amount of litter produced. Every plastic bottle, takeaway container, and food wrapper cast out onto the street, ends up in our creeks, rivers, oceans – and your favourite local fishing spots.

Spearheaded by OzFish, Australia’s fishing conservation charity, and supported by the City of Gold Coast, the restoration efforts at Saltwater Creek have shown the power of community action in preserving the health of our waterways. This project aimed to improve the creek's fish habitat and overall ecosystem. Initially launched to tackle the growing pressures of urban development, the project focused on removing litter, restoring vegetation, and improving fish passage in this crucial waterway.

Saltwater Creek, which stretches from Nerang State Forest to the Coomera River, is a vital part of the region’s natural ecosystem. It supports migratory fish species, such as Mangrove Jack, and bird species like the endangered Far Eastern Curlew.

Through a series of clean-up events, volunteers took to the creek to relieve these urban pressures and improve the waterway for both wildlife and the local fishing community. This resulted in more than 1,853 kg of litter being removed from the creek.

Volunteers, from paddlers in kayaks to families cleaning from the shore, showed their commitment to preserving this vital resource. From Saltwater Park to Tradewinds Reserve, the community’s efforts were nothing short of inspiring. At one event, 715 kg of rubbish was collected from just 500 metres of the creek—a testament to the dedication of those involved.

These clean-ups were more than just litter collection. They were a powerful display of environmental stewardship and highlighted the interconnectedness of local ecosystems. Saltwater Creek flows into the internationally recognised Moreton Bay Marine Park, making its health critical to the wider region. Litter not only detracts from the beauty of the creek but also has devastating effects on fish habitats. Debris can entangle wildlife, impact their ability to breed and feed, and destroy sensitive habitats.

With further plans to restore streamside vegetation and modify barriers that inhibit fish passage, the work at Saltwater Creek is far from over. The success of the cleanups is just the beginning of a larger project aimed at improving water quality and fish habitats. By tackling urban waste and making improvements to stormwater systems, OzFish and the local community are ensuring a healthier future for the creek and its surrounding areas.

These efforts were made possible by funding from the Australian Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchments program, along with support from the City of Gold Coast and BCF Boating Camping Fishing. The impact of these clean-ups demonstrates how powerful community action can be in the fight for cleaner, healthier waterways. Keep an eye out for future OzFish events to get involved and contribute to the protection of our local ecosystems.

HowThe Fathering Project Aims to Empower Dads and Strengthen Families Across Australia

Across Australia, society is undergoing rapid change. Community perceptions of fatherhood are evolving, yet many dads still face significant challenges. Too often, fathers struggle to navigate the ups and downs of being an engaged parent. These struggles can lead to poor mental health, strained relationships, and increased risks of issues like suicide or domestic violence. Dads need support, and they need it now.

That’s where The Fathering Project comes in.

The Fathering Project recognises the transformative role fathers play in their children’s lives. Evidence shows that fathers have a powerful influence on their children’s health, well-being, social skills, and academic success, and when fathers are engaged, the positive impacts are immense. When they are absent, disengaged, or ill-equipped, the consequences can be devastating.

Transforming Fatherhood Through Schools Programs and Dads Groups

As an evidence-based organisation and Australia’s first father-focused intervention program, The Fathering Project promotes positive fathering behaviours and encourages dads to engage with their children from infancy to adolescence.

The approach is grounded in prevention and early intervention. Through their Schools Program and Dads Groups, The Fathering Project works to inspire, inform, and support fathers across Australia. Engaging resources and opportunities are provided for dads to connect with their children, with schools, and with each other. This community focus helps dads to feel empowered, not isolated, and enables them to take on their role as fathers with renewed energy and commitment.

The Schools Program support schools to effectively engage students, fathers and families and build strong community partnerships for the lifelong benefit of

students. The Dads Groups, available both in-person and online via The Fathering Project’s Virtual Dads Group monthly meetups, are a community in which fathers can share their experiences, support each other, and build stronger bonds with their children.

Making an Impact in the Gold Coast

Locally in the Gold Coast, several schools and early learning centres such as Mudgeeraba Early Childhood Centre, Robina Town Child Care Centre, Southport Child Care Centre, Oxenford State School, and Varsity College have embraced the Schools Program and Dads Groups, helping connect fathers with each other and their children, fostering a supportive community for sharing experiences and growth.

The results? Happier, more connected dads, and children who feel supported and valued. The simple act of creating space for dads to come together has had a remarkable effect – it’s a reminder that while fatherhood can be challenging, no dad needs to face those challenges alone.

Helping Transform Lives Through Better Fathering

We know engaged fathers transform lives. But more than that, when dads get the support they need, it doesn’t just benefit them; it benefits their children, their partners, and their entire community. That’s why The Fathering Project is committed to making a difference, by:

• Conducting research to understand how fathers impact their children’s lives from early years to adulthood.

• Delivering early intervention programs to strengthen father-family relationships.

• Raising awareness about the importance of fatherhood through campaigns and community outreach.

• Providing tools to reduce negative outcomes like poor mental health and family disengagement.

• Supporting at-risk fathers to prevent issues like neglect and trauma.

• Advocating for awareness and funding for father-focused programs.

The Fathering Project envisions a future where every child in Australia has an involved, supportive dad. A father who is there through life’s ups and downs, helping their child thrive and reach their full potential.

On a quiet evening on the Gold Coast, an ordinary moment turned into every parent’s nightmare. As Krissy Jarvie stepped out of the shower around 8:30pm, her phone buzzed with a call from her son. The voice on the other end was panicked and broken.

“All he said was, ‘Mum, I have been bashed, I’m in a bush, I have no teeth, and I don’t know where I am.’ Then his phone cut out,” she recalls.

In that instant, her world stood still.

A DESPERATE SEARCH

Krissy’s mind raced. She knew her son was somewhere near North Burleigh, but his exact location was a mystery. Frantically, she called him back, trying to piece together his whereabouts. His phone battery held on just long enough for him to say he could see the North Burleigh Surf Club before it died completely.

Krissy drove straight to the surf club, arriving to a commotion. Rushing toward the scene, she found her son being cared for by two North Burleigh Surf Club workers who were tending to his injuries and keeping him calm.

HOW TRAGEDY LED TO A LIFESAVING INNOVATION

THE AFTERMATH OF VIOLENCE

Her son had been at a “gatho” — slang for a party — at the North Burleigh Headland. What began as a gathering ended in horror, with multiple unprovoked attacks occurring that night. Her son had been beaten so badly that, in a desperate bid to escape, he fell from the headland.

He suffered severe injuries, including an orbital blowout fracture that left doctors unsure if his vision loss was temporary or permanent. Surgery to reconstruct his eye socket was delayed by the presence of a blood clot, and the family endured three agonising weeks waiting to learn if his vision could be saved.

The emotional scars ran deep, too. While one 17-year-old was charged, the mother believes there were more attackers, including adults, who evaded justice.

THE ROAD TO HEALING

Though he is physically healed, the mental toll remains. “It’s definitely affected him, but he pulls positives out of everything,” Krissy says. “He was such a shy kid before, but this experience brought him out of his shell. He’s not revengeful at all, which amazes me — though I can’t say the same for myself.”

For Krissy, the most haunting thought is what could have happened if she hadn’t found him in time. “I felt sick thinking he could lose consciousness or worse. That thought still destroys me to this day.”

TURNING PAIN INTO PURPOSE

The ordeal sparked an idea. With her son’s phone dying at a critical moment, Krissy became determined to prevent others from facing the same danger. She envisioned a compact, pre-charged device capable of providing just enough battery power to call for help in an emergency.

After countless hours of research, trial, and error — and being turned down by several manufacturers — she found a partner who believed in her vision. Together, they developed Powerdaze, a biodegradable, pocket-sized charger that provides approximately 50 per cent phone charge.

A LIFESAVING INNOVATION

The chargers have been warmly received, with users praising their portability, reliability, and eco-friendly design. “It’s been so encouraging to see how people value this product. Knowing it could save lives makes it all worthwhile,” Krissy says.

For Krissy, what began as a nightmare has become a mission. By channeling her pain into innovation, she has created something that ensures others can stay connected and safe when it matters most.

Fierce Grace Bundall:

A SANCTUARY FOR BODY, MIND, AND CONNECTION

When Drew and Roz Hobbs opened the doors to Fierce Grace Yoga in Bundall, they set out to offer something truly unique in the local yoga landscape. Frustrated by the idea that hot yoga can often feel exclusive and intimidating, particularly for beginners, they envisioned a space where every individual— regardless of age, fitness level, or body type—could feel welcome, supported, and empowered.

“Our classes are heated, but not to the level of some other studios. The heat is an aid to flexibility not the primary focus”, Roz explains. “All our classes are suitable for students of all levels, with options in poses for beginners to focus on alignment, while the more experienced can explore deeper variations”.

The studio is a reflection of their belief that yoga should be accessible to all, and that true wellness comes from balancing mind & body. The name Fierce Grace is about the balance of strength and determination (Fierce) with flexibility and mindfulness (Grace). Their range of classes allows students to explore both sides of the spectrum.

For Drew, yoga is deeply personal. His journey into yoga began after surviving a brain hemorrhage—a life-changing event that pushed him to rediscover his body, strength, and health. Through Fierce Grace, he found not only physical recovery but also emotional and mental healing. “I became a teacher to share the transformative benefits yoga has had on me.”

“You don’t need a perfect body or to look a certain way to start to practice yoga,” Drew assured me. “I couldn’t see my toes, when I started, let alone touch them!” Whether it’s the signature Fierce Grace class, designed to activate both body and mind, or the unique Deep Core sessions, focusing on true core activation and hip opening, their classes offer something for everyone. “Ideally you should practice both the stronger classes and the softer, flexibility focused ones. Often the classes you like least are exactly the ones your body and mind need the most,” Roz explains.

The beauty of Fierce Grace is its inclusivity. Roz notes that many people feel intimidated or out of place in traditional yoga settings, but at their Bundall studio, that’s simply not the case. “It’s a place where people can come as they are, work at their own pace, and feel supported no matter where they’re starting from,” she says. This welcoming approach helps build a community where strangers quickly become friends, offering the chance to connect with like-minded individuals after class.

The studio itself reflects this ethos—fresh, calm, and inviting. Roz and Drew sought to create a space where everyone feels comfortable, a far cry from the tired, intimidating yoga studios many people imagine. “We built the studio we’d want to practice in—one that feels open and approachable, with cool branding and imagery that depicts real people, not your cliched Zen, Buddhas and incense,” Roz explains. “Seeing students walk through the door and breathe a sigh of relief puts a big smile on my face”, adds Drew.

From office workers with tight hips, and mums taking some “me time” with the kids at school, to fit cyclists or runners looking for some hamstring relief, Fierce Grace provides a much-needed space for Gold Coast locals to rejuvenate, physically, mentally and socially.

Much more than just a place to practice yoga; it’s a place to feel seen, supported, and empowered, no matter where you’re starting from. Roz and Drew’s vision of creating an inclusive, welcoming space has become a reality, and the GC community is embracing it with open (and ever stronger!) arms.

STEP INTO STYLE:

In conversation with Cathy Hardy, founder of Shoetique in Southport

Nestled within Australia Fair, Shoetique is a must-visit destination for exclusive European footwear, vibrant accessories and fashion. We spoke with founder, Cathy Hardy, to learn more about what’s on the horizon for 2025, and her strategy for success that’s grown her Gold Coast client base for an impressive 17 years and counting.

Who is the quintessential ‘Shoetique woman’?

Our largest demographic is women over 55, and we have customers who travel from all across the Gold Coast (or even order from overseas!). Someone appreciates the quality assurance of shopping at Shoetique and the personalised service – myself and my colleague Roz are hands-on and we build that rapport over time.

We stock clothing, shoes and accessories for everyday wear all the way up to those special occasion items – that quality and luxurious feel remains consistent across everything we carry.

What are we wearing on our feet in 2025?

Comfort comes first – striking that balance between comfort and style is where I come in. Women want shoes that look good but feel good and that they can wear all day. That’s the challenge for me! I’m always on the lookout for that next trend that’s stylish, colourful and also let your feet breathe. Sneakers are comfortable but not practical for our warm weather, so comfort first, but exclusivity and style come a close second.

What’s on the horizon for Shoetique?

Beautiful jewellery and accessories are our biggest focus after footwear – the right pieces can really make an outfit pop, and they help freshen up your wardrobe without needing a full revamp. The majority of our stock is still from European designers, and because of this X factor, we remain one of the premier shopping destinations in Australia Fair – we’ve got something for everyone, and I always say when you visit us, ‘You won’t be disappointed!’.

What does an average working day in your life look like?

Merchandising is a big part of my day – the store always needs to look incredible.

Of course, the rest of my time is often dedicated to our customers – a lot of them are good friends and wonderful women.

Managing suppliers and stock, looking at new ranges and marketing, planning catalogues and lookbooks – each day is a little different but the focus is our clients, and it always comes back to that. It’s why we have women visit us from far and wide –in-person the experience matters.

Luscious Locks on a Budget:

Kylie Hayes’ Top 4 At-Home Haircare Secrets

Hairstylist and founder of Haze Hair, Kylie Hayes, shares her top 4 tips for keeping hair looking luscious and extending the longevity of coloured hair using at-home treatments.

Tip 1: Use Semi-Permanent Toning Filters

To intensify your colour’s tone and avoid discolouration at an affordable price point, Revlon Professional’s Nutri Color Filters will be your favourite haircare colour treatment during financially tight times.

The unique 3-in-1 product achieves flawless, vibrant hair colour and a silky shine finish in between salon visits, so you don’t need to worry about purchasing an extensive list of haircare products. Kylie says, “Unwanted hair regrowth is bound to happen when delaying a visit to your hair salon, but this pigmented semipermanent treatment is perfect for enhancing dull-coloured tones and providing that refresh that you are looking for.”

To remove unwanted brassy, yellow and orange tones use the Revlon Professional Re/Start Color AntiBrassiness Purple Drops, a gentle serum that enhances blonde, lightened, grey or white hair tones.

Tip 3: Maintain moisture

Your trusty straightener and curling iron may also be a leading cause for your hair fading quickly. Kylie says, “Heat opens up your hair cuticles allowing colour to fade at a faster rate, instead look to reduce your use of styling tools and applying a heat protectant before styling will be a gamechanger in restoring the brightness of colour in between salon visits.” 1 2 3 4

Tip 2: Use Nourishing Shampoos & Conditioners

Soapy shampoos and conditioners might be the reason for your colour fading faster leaving you to be a frequent customer at your hair salon. Kylie says, “Substituting your thick, rich shampoos and conditioners with gentler, more nourishing products will cleanse the hair more effectively and greatly extend the life of your colour.”

Look for products that are free from sulphates which are prone to strip colour.

As coloured hair causes dryness, thinning, split ends and breakage, Kylie says, “Moisturising your hair with a hair mask weekly, helps to lock colour in the hair’s cuticles while also preventing further damage.”

Look for products that nourish, hydrate and strengthen the hair, leaving it with a soft and shiny finish.

Tip 4: Cut back on Heat Styling Tools

Empowering Yourself

Through Skincare: How Looking After Your Skin is a Form of Self-Love

Self-care can sometimes feel like just another item on our endless to-do list in the busy pace of modern life. However, the simple act of looking after your skin can be a powerful way to practice self-love.

Skincare isn’t just about maintaining a glowing complexion. Taking time for yourself builds confidence and connects with who you truly are.

Each time you cleanse, moisturise, or apply a mask, you are carving out space to focus on your well-being, both inside and out.

Skincare as a Moment of Stillness

It is a rare chance to slow down, to breathe, and to be present with yourself. Whether it’s a five-minute routine in the morning or a more indulgent evening ritual, these moments are an opportunity to connect with yourself on a deeper level.

Consider your skincare routine as a daily practice of mindfulness. The simple act of washing your face becomes a pause in the chaos of life—a time to reflect on how you’re feeling. Skincare becomes more than just an external act as it transforms into a powerful tool for grounding yourself in the present moment.

Confidence Through Care

Looking after your skin can be empowering because it builds confidence. When you take the time to care for yourself, you feel better about how you present yourself to the world. Glowing, healthy skin isn’t just about appearances; it’s about how it makes you feel. It’s a reflection of the care and love you give yourself.

Confidence radiates from within, but the way we care for our outward appearance can give us that little boost when we need it most. When you know you’ve taken time for yourself, it shows in how you carry yourself.

Skincare is Self-Love, Not

Perfection

It’s important to remember that skincare is not about achieving perfection. The beauty industry often pushes the idea that flawless skin equals happiness, but true empowerment comes from embracing your skin as it is. Your skin is uniquely yours, and your skincare routine should be about celebrating that.

When you focus on nurturing your skin rather than trying to fix it, you shift the conversation from criticism to care. This simple change in mindset allows you to approach your skincare ritual with kindness and patience, rather than pressure or frustration. It’s a gentle reminder that you deserve to be taken care of, no matter what stage of life or skin journey you’re on.

A Lifelong Act of Self-Love

Taking care of your skin is a lifelong journey and a practice in showing yourself compassion. Your skincare routine can evolve as you do — reflecting your needs, your lifestyle, and your personal growth.

It is a way to invest in yourself and your well-being, reminding you that you are worthy of care every single day.

The next time you reach for your favourite moisturiser or mask remember that you are not just taking care of your skin, you are empowering yourself through a simple yet profound act of self-love.

Positivity BECOMES TOXIC WHEN

Who believes if you always have a positive outlook, everything will be ok?

Bully to that. There’s a reason there’s day and night, yin and yang, black and white, up and down. And everything in between.

Having been through an incredibly challenging time recently, I’ve had some of those so-called pesky negative emotions. Anger. Rage. Sadness. Grief. Disappointment. I went to the dark side for a while. It was awful. Truly awful. I’ve not felt so down and lost for a long time. I got really dark.

While some outright avoided me. Others stepped up to hold space. But some, with the best intentions, encouraged me to let it go, move on, be positive, and be grateful for what I’ve got. One bright spark suggested my current situation was my choice, as was happiness.

Or...

Being told to smile (even when I didn’t want to).

Being told to ‘Think positive’ or ‘Be optimistic’.

‘Don’t be so negative’.

‘You have nothing to be stressed about’.

‘Other people in the world have it worse than you’.

Hashtags on social media like #GoodVibesOnly or #PositiveVibesOnly

There’s a line between finding the silver lining in an experience and toxic positivity.

Having a positive outlook on life is good for our mental well-being.

The problem is that life isn’t always positive. We all have painful emotions and experiences. While often icky and uncomfortable, those emotions need to be felt and dealt with openly and honestly to achieve acceptance and greater psychological health.

Instead, we’re tiptoeing around, scared we’re going to trigger someone with our experiences. Or not expressing how we feel, because who needs a Pollyanna telling you the sun is shining when for you, it’s dark and you just want someone to hold space for you?

Toxic positivity is dangerous. It’s gaslighting. It’s not helpful or makes you a more enlightened person because you always see the good. It makes me question someone’s mental health, because if you’re skipping over the bad bits in life, you’re not living fully.

Toxic positivity minimises and even denies any trace of human emotions that are not strictly happy or positive. It’s an avoidance of unpleasantness, and I don’t believe that’s healthy.

“ TOXIC POSITIVITY MINIMISES AND EVEN DENIES ANY TRACE O F HUMAN EMOTIONS THAT ARE NOT STRICTLY HAPPY OR POSITIVE. ”

It avoids authentic human emotion, which causes guilt and can be shaming.

We have so much knowledge at our fingertips to understand how the brain works, which can give us an understanding of psychology and mental health.

Yet, we live in a time where we are ‘cancelled’ if we go against the virtue of the masses.

We get shut down for differing opinions.

Other people’s emotions make us uncomfortable. We avoid those who are negative.

It’s why people don’t share their thoughts. Because the peanut gallery will tell you how and why you should be feeling instead of letting you feel the feels, so you can move through it.

The pressure to appear ‘OK’ invalidates the range of emotions we all experience. You’re not defective, weak, or inadequate when you feel distress or sadness.

These are transient emotions. If we’re encouraged and supported through them, we learn, grow, and heal to come out the other side.

Reality is painful. There are a lot of people doing it tough right now. How many of them are quietly living in pain because they feel they have no one to turn to? If they do express themselves, how long before they’re told to not be negative? There’s a difference between positivity and optimism.

Optimism can be good and nurturing and allow us to believe that we will heal and survive the difficult moments. It acknowledges when times have been tough while also holding hope for things to change.

The pressure to be productive, upbeat, and happy leaves many feeling inadequate and

ashamed that they’re not okay because they can’t make it through the day without a panic attack or tears.

Humans are not designed to be positive all the time.

When we dismiss other people’s concerns, it’s because many of us are uncomfortable with difficult feelings.

Sadness, anger, and fear aren’t inherently bad. They are part of our human experience spectrum that helps us identify things that are threatening, upsetting, or need attention, like a blinking light on your fuel tank when it’s almost empty. When someone disregards those feelings, it’s harmful to our mental and physical health.

Emotions aren’t positive or negative. They are only emotions. Stop denying the ones that make you feel shit. They’re there for a reason. You may just have to trust you’ll find someone who’ll hold space so you can express yourself.

It’s undeniable that being positive is a good thing. Excessive positivity is harmful.

Sometimes life can just flat-out suck. By pretending we’re “positive vibes all day,” we deny the validity of our human experience.

A mentor once told me that it’s ok to feel mad, sad, and down as long as I’m only renting the space. Don’t take a mortgage out on it. Feel the feels. Learn from the experience and grow.

GUARD YOUR

Energy This Christmas

Christmas. “It’s the most wonderful time of the year,” so the song goes. It can be, but for many it's a tough time with too much to do, too many places to be, and an enormous amount of obligation. Obligation is a huge energy drainer at this time of year— attending events you don’t want to, sharing meals with people you don’t like, buying gifts for people because you have to!

Doing Christmas ‘your way’ is the answer. Find the joy in the bits you love and fa-la-la all the way into the New Year. There is a lot to love about Christmas. The upside of Christmas is yummy food, thoughtful gifts, time with people you love, celebrating the past 12 months, family traditions, and glittery decorations. The downside is overeating, wasted money, difficult people, and years of resentment all showing up in one day!

The power of anything is in choosing what you love and leaning into that. The secret is to do more of what you love and less of what grinds your gears!

We get energy when we do things we enjoy. When we hang out with people we love, when we visit places we enjoy. Christmas is an excellent time to be honest. You know it's coming up, and you can choose how you respond and participate.

Write down all the things that happen at Christmas in your world. Write next to each one what you love and hate about each activity or responsibility. Each of the things on your list will have an energy. Some will be a hell yes. Some will be laced with dread! Take notice of how you feel.

Now make some decisions. What do you want to do? What do you need to do? What can you outsource? You can outsource just about anything these days. Get your house decorated, have meals prepared,

and have your gifts wrapped. Have some conversations about what you do and don’t enjoy about the Christmas season. This doesn’t have to be expensive—swap jobs with people who enjoy different tasks than you! Maybe you cook and someone shops for your gifts! Maybe you clean while someone else decorates your house.

Having a plan will energise you! Getting organised will make you feel good. There is so much that can be done ahead of time. Make lists of things that can be done in October and November so December has more space.

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year to celebrate. You can celebrate yourself, the people who have supported and loved you, the people you support and love. It's a time for generosity. A time to give—giving of ourselves creates more energy. Who could you give your time, your money, or your energy to this Christmas?

“ FIND THE JOY IN THE BITS YOU LOVE AND FA-LA-LA ALL THE WAY INTO THE NEW YEAR. ”

Get Energy:

• Plan something that you want to do.

• Create something special for you and a loved one.

Guard your energy by:

• Get clear and honest about what you want.

• Decide what you will and won’t do.

Give:

• Make an effort. Do significant things for significant people!

• Be kind and generous doing things you do enjoy.

Maybe this is the year to do Christmas your way. To honour your energy and celebrate how you want to!

“Think of it as giving your cells a gentle nudge to perform better”

DO YOU EXPERIENCE POOR CIRCULATION, INFLAMMATION, OR SLEEPLESS NIGHTS?

Unlock the Power of PEMF Therapy

In the ever-evolving world of wellness, we are always on the lookout for treatments that offer real benefits without complicated procedures.

Enter PEMF therapy (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy)—a noninvasive, science-backed wellness technique that boosts your body’s natural healing abilities by energising it at a cellular level. Think of it as giving your cells a gentle nudge to perform better!

How it works

PEMF therapy uses low-frequency electromagnetic fields that penetrate deep into your body, promoting cellular repair, improving circulation, and supporting your metabolic processes. Imagine improving the way your body transports essential nutrients, oxygen, and even hormones without the need for invasive treatments or medications. Unlike high-frequency EMFs that can be harmful, PEMF therapy mirrors the natural frequencies found in nature, making it safe and effective.

Why is circulation important for health?

“Circulation is the unsung hero of health. When your blood is flowing freely, every part of your body gets the oxygen, nutrients, and hormones it needs to thrive.”

Promoting recovery, relaxation and rejuvenation

BEST CELLF, a female-founded Gold Coast wellness brand, has taken this revolutionary therapy and integrated it into their Infrared PEMF Mats, which are designed to support overall well-being.

These mats are more than just a comfy surface to lie on—they are equipped with PEMF coils that emit gentle pulses to promote recovery, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Whether you’re looking to improve circulation, reduce inflammation, or simply unwind after a long day, these mats offer a natural, effective way to enhance your wellness journey.

More than just PEMF

The BEST CELLF mats don’t stop at PEMF therapy. They also incorporate other powerful modalities, like far-infrared heat to relax muscles and aid detoxification, red light therapy to stimulate skin and tissue repair, and natural crystals that emit negative ions to boost energy and mood. Imagine a single product that combines all of these benefits, helping you feel refreshed and recharged whether you use it for just 20 minutes or an hour.

Whether you’re recovering from a workout, winding down in the evening with meditation, or enhancing your skin’s glow, these mats fit seamlessly into any selfcare routine.

Experience it yourself

As part of their mission to make advanced wellness accessible, BEST CELLF offers inperson appointments and demonstrations at their Burleigh Heads HQ.

Top tips for summer exercise

Summer is well and truly here; the temperature gauge is high and the sun beams onto our skin. During Springtime, after the harsh winter motivation is at an all-time high due to the warmth after months of cold and dark mornings, but during Jan-March the heat and sun can become unbearable for some.

Just by following these few tips below, you can not only still hit your exercise goals but thrive in the summer time!

1. STAY HYDRATED

It's recommended that you consume at least 2-3L of water per day plus 1L for every hour of Exercise. During summer it's vital to do this as a minimum, even exceeding those guidelines due to the increased sweat rate through heat and sun exposure. To avoid headaches or dehydration, ensure to always have a water bottle on hand and set yourself a goal to hit your hydration targets. Also be aware to increase salt or electrolytes as you can become deficient by replacing sweat with water. A tip may be to have on hand an electrolyte blend or Powerade Zero to help hydration.

2. PL AN YOUR TIMES FOR EXERCISE.

If schedules permit, attempt to exercise during the cooler parts of the day if exercising outside. Setting the alarm that half hour earlier or exercising before dinner time can make a world of difference to the perceived effort of your training, leaving you to recover easier and be set for the next session

3. EXERCISE IN THE AIR-CONDITIONING.

When you come into the studio for a PT session, group exercise or your own cardio the Air-Con will always be on during summer. This leaves you to be able to exercise at your discretion and feel comfortable at all hours!

4. CHANGE YOUR TRAINING UP!

Add swimming to your weekly plan, swimming is a great low-moderate or hard cardio session that works not only your cardiovascular system but is total body exercise as well. Swimming training in summer, whether in a pool or open water is a great way to exercise in summer and enjoy a different type of training!

5. MONITOR YOUR HEART RATE.

Running during summer will always have an effect on your heart rate. If you are used to running at a particular speed with a certain heart rate during winter, it's important to adjust your plan as your heart rate will naturally rise due to the humidity, sun and heat on your skin. Therefore, this lifts the zone you are exercising in, which if not planned for will change the way your body recovers.

6. SLIP, SLOP, SLAP.

Protecting yourself from skin cancer ensures that you won't encounter any longterm damage from exercising in summer

The last thing to note is that we live in a beautiful country with great scenery and training facilities. Enjoy what we have to offer and don't let any season get in the way of you experiencing your optimal health!

Gold Coast’s Silver Star

Why I’m Inspired by Olympic Swimmer

Moesha Johnson and Gr8 Health

When I first heard about Moesha Johnson, the Gold Coast’s very own Olympic silver medallist in the gruelling 10km marathon swim, I couldn’t help but feel inspired. As someone who’s spent years in the health and wellness space, I know that behind every incredible athletic achievement is a story of perseverance, passion, and holistic health. And when I discovered that Moesha has been supported by Gr8 Health for the past five years, it all made sense.

Gr8 Health isn’t just a health retailer; it’s a beacon of excellence in natural wellness. Based in the heart of the Gold Coast, Gr8 Health has been quietly transforming lives for eight years, and their impact extends far beyond the products they sell.

Why Gr8 Health Stands Out

Let me tell you why I believe Gr8 Health is leading the way in natural health remedies. First, their commitment to quality is unmatched. They’ve built a reputation as Australia’s go-to retailer for premium supplements, organic foods, and ecofriendly personal care. But it’s more than that. Gr8 Health is about education and empowerment.

Their website, www.gr8health.com.au, features over 400 health articles written by leading naturopaths, including their co-founder, Dr. Julie Douglass. These aren’t fluff pieces—they’re scientifically grounded insights designed to help people make

informed choices about their health. From natural remedies to sustainable living tips, Gr8 Health ensures their customers have the knowledge to lead healthier lives.

As Sam Godfrey, the founder of Gr8 Health, puts it: “We’ve spent eight incredible years building a business that not only provides the best natural remedies but also empowers our customers to take control of their health. Ninety percent of our leadership team is made up of women, and that’s something I’m incredibly proud of. We’re a growing business with a big heart.”

Supporting Champions and Communities

What really impressed me is how Gr8 Health walks the talk when it comes to community impact. Their sponsorship of Moesha Johnson is a prime example. Moesha is more than an athlete—she’s a role model who embodies the values of perseverance, wellness, and grit.

“Moesha’s dedication to her sport and her health is a perfect reflection of what we stand for,” Sam told me. “We’re honoured to support her journey and proud to see her represent our community on the world stage.”

But the support doesn’t stop with Moesha. Gr8 Health has been corporate partners with the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary for over four years, contributing to wildlife preservation right here on the Gold Coast. And here’s something that truly warmed my heart—they donate skincare packs to the breast cancer clinics at Pindara, John Flynn, and Gold Coast Private Hospitals. These thoughtful contributions help women recovering from surgery feel cared for and valued.

Competing with the Giants

Let’s be real—the natural health industry is tough. Gr8 Health is up against major players like Healthy Life, owned by Woolworths, but they’re holding their ground. In fact, they’ve been recognized as finalists for the 2024 Retail Business of the Year at the Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards.

What’s their secret? It’s their unwavering focus on people. Gr8 Health isn’t just about selling products; it’s about building relationships and fostering a sense of community around wellness.

A Personal Recommendation

If you’re looking for natural health solutions that you can trust, Gr8 Health is where you need to start. Their product range is vast, their expertise is evident, and their commitment to education is inspiring. Whether you’re an aspiring Olympian or simply someone looking to improve your health, Gr8 Health has something for you.

Visit www.gr8health.com.au and explore their extensive catalogue. Check out their articles, written by experts like Dr. Julie Douglass, and take advantage of the wealth of knowledge they offer.

Gr8 Health is redefining what it means to lead a healthier life—and they’re doing it with heart, purpose, and a deep commitment to their community. With partners like Moesha Johnson and initiatives that give back to breast cancer patients and wildlife preservation, Gr8 Health is proving that true wellness is about more than products—it’s about people.

Take it from me: this is one health revolution you’ll want to be a part of.

lovin'

If you are longing for the bright colours and quirky streets of Europe but your budget says otherwise, then put away your passport and pull out your bikini. A stay on the coast can be just the ticket to a relaxing break.

Is the QT Hotel in Surfers Paradise the coast’s best kept secret? Forget the cookie-cutter tourist hotels. The QT in Surfers Paradise redefines luxury with a playful touch of sass, fusing cutting-edge design with iconic beach vibes. Brimming with style, colour, and cool, it’s an ideal retreat for a girls’ getaway or a romantic night for two.

The crown jewel of this chic haven lies on the second level: the qtQT Cabins, a “hotel within a hotel” offering a unique, tranquil escape unlike anywhere else on the coast. Enter through a corridor adorned with striking Slim Aarons prints, and you’ll emerge into an oasis of calm, complete with decked paths surrounded by lush tropical gardens. Despite being in the heart of Surfers, this sky-high sanctuary feels delightfully remote, with little noise filtering through.

The qtQT Cabins—six in total—circle The Landing, a communal outdoor space featuring a cozy firepit and stylish lounges. The contemporary cabins, designed for two (but adaptable for small families), are infused with coastal chic. Expect impossibly comfortable mattresses dressed in soft I Love Linen sheets, a kitchenette stocked with complimentary coconut cookies and veggie chips, and an

indulgent minibar. The large, light-filled shower is a treat, thanks to a skylight, and comes fully stocked with luxurious Saya Skincare products.

After a refreshing shower, wrap yourself in the Missoni-patterned robes and head to your private deck for sunset views, complete with a cocktail. Under the open sky, as night falls, the city lights blend beautifully into the darkness. We sipped a vodka tasting tray and savoured a delicious charcuterie board, soaking up the serene atmosphere.

Room service became our choice for the evening, but if you’re looking to venture out, the QT offers three fantastic dining options. These include the glitzy Stingray bar, where you can even sign up for a cocktail masterclass, and Yamagen, the hotel’s finedining Japanese restaurant.

“Our qtQT cabins are perfect for couples or groups looking to book all six cabins for a private getaway,” says Zyra, our cheerful

It is open for dinner too, brimming with options ranging from Middle Eastern delights to Latin American dishes. A stay in the cabins also secures you prime access to the striking pool area with its black-and-white tiled aesthetic. We claimed a poolside cabana and spent the day alternating between reading, swimming, and soaking in the jacuzzi. A picnic lunch and refreshing drinks were delivered right to our cabana, complete with a special menu for kids.

For the ultimate relaxation, we headed to the spaQ on the first floor. With options ranging from facials to couple’s treatments, I opted for a remedial massage. Escape to the country

Fed up with family visitors, or just need somewhere far away from the hustle and bustle of the silly season? Then head south for thirty minutes and rediscover peace, serenity, and above all, the beauty of nature. Here, nestled in the serene landscapes of Myocum, New South Wales, you’ll find The Hinterland Hideout, a tranquil retreat that harmoniously blends rustic charm with modern comforts. A cozy 139-square-foot tiny home that may be small on size, but certainly delivers when it comes to truly getting away from it all. The cabin is thoughtfully designed to provide an intimate escape, while granting you a front row seat to nature. The small but mighty interior boasts a comfortable queen-sized bed adorned with soft linens, a well-equipped kitchenette, and a private bathroom. The bathroom follows ecologically sustainable principles, including an eco-friendly cassette toilet with a removable waste holding tank, hand basin, and shower (gas-heated for hot showers). Large windows flood the space with natural light to flood the space, ideal for a sun dappled afternoon nap. While we were tempted to just relax on our bed without the need to entertain children or prepare yet more school holiday activities, the call of nature was too loud.

It’s outdoors where you’ll discover true bliss. Surrounded by lush greenery, we found comfortable chairs set on the private deck, perfect for morning coffees or evening relaxation under the stars. The outdoor area includes a cozy firepit and lounge seating, ideal for unwinding in the peaceful surroundings. And there is a BBQ to cook up some seafood or local produce. While the house sits on the owner’s land, it is still perfectly secluded – a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the coast.

Bright lights, big city

Let’s face it—sometimes, we all crave a dose of culture and the buzz of big-city living. With overseas travel on hold for many, a short getaway to Brisbane offers the perfect solution to your wanderlust. And when it comes to a luxurious yet family-friendly escape, Pullman & Mercure Brisbane King George Square is a must for those seeking five star luxury.

The glam hits a high note as soon as you enter the lobby of the Pullman, a taste of the sumptuous décor to come in the spacious rooms. Our family of four fit comfortably in a double bedroom with soaring views over the night lights of the city.

Nestled in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD, the Pullman is just a short stroll from the iconic South Bank precinct, where every member of the family will find something entertaining in the cultural gems like GOMA and the Brisbane Wheel. It’s also steps away from Queen Street Mall and the vibrant Eagle Street Pier dining district.

We spent the afternoon exploring the city via the ferry and a wander through the Science Museum on Southbank, before returning to the hotel seeking something cold to drink and water to dive into. We were rewarded with the stunning rooftop pool and the Sixteen Antlers bar, both of which boast 360-degree views of Brisbane’s CBD. With its bird’s eye view location, we swam and sipped and watched as the city skyline slowly turned to twinkling lights and towering shadows.

While there are many restaurants right on your doorstep, there is no need to venture further than the ground floor. We chose to eat at the Goldfinch Restaurant, a lightfilled, Hamptons-inspired setting serving Mediterranean-inspired dishes, including the mouthwatering pan seared Humpty Doo barramundi fillet, served with Kipfler potato, broccolini with herb butter and the orecchiette creamy wild mushrooms and black truffle dishes. The kids loved the stone baked pizzas and milkshakes. In fact, we enjoyed the meal so much we returned the next day for lunch, taking advantage of the $39 express menu. Or if you want to refuel before hitting the shops, Goldfinch also offers an elegant high tea menu.

CHRISTMAS TREAT

And a heads up: take the pressure off this Christmas Day and book a table for a lavish family Christmas lunch. Indulge in festive dishes without the hassle of cooking or visit Goldfinch for their specially curated menus for Christmas lunch or dinner. www.goldfinchbrisbane.com.au

9. Place the oven dish with the oysters in the oven for around 8-10 minutes until the sauce is bubbling and the bacon slightly crisped.

10. Once cooked, serve the oysters in the shell with a slice of lemon on the side.

11. Transfer oysters in their bottom shell to a bed of rock salt or crushed ice, keeping the shell level.

Building Better Men

How Men of Business is making a difference

Today’s young men face a range of challenges that can lead them down troubling paths. Thankfully, the Men of Business (MOB) Academy is offering a lifeline to boys who have disengaged from mainstream education, helping them build better lives.

Why

MOB Was Created

MOB was founded with a simple yet powerful mission: to guide young men into adulthood equipped with respect, resilience, and responsibility. With the help of strong mentors and positive relationships, MOB has become a transformative space for boys currently from years 11 & 12 who need a fresh start. It is more than just a school—it’s a place where boys can develop not only academic skills but also life skills.

Since opening its doors in 2020, MOB Academy has made a massive impact on the lives of over 600 boys, many of whom would have otherwise fallen through the cracks. The numbers are impressive: Not only have these boys earned vocational qualifications, but they’ve also found jobs. The academy is a place of second chances, where young men can rediscover their potential and set themselves on a path to success.

The Growing Need

The need for programs like MOB is greater than ever. Youth disengagement, school dropout rates, and youth crime continue to rise, with some boys turning to destructive behaviour simply because they don’t see another way. Did you know that suspensions from school are at an all-time high, and the cost of keeping one young man in the youth justice system can be as high as $680,000? Without intervention, many young men who leave school early face uncertain futures, often leading to long-term unemployment or worse.

MOB steps in to break this cycle. By providing vocational training, career guidance, mental health support, and even meals for families in need, MOB is creating real change. It’s a holistic approach that doesn’t just focus on education but on every aspect of a boy’s well-being.

The New MOB HQ

The next chapter for MOB is the creation of MOB HQ—a state-of-the-art facility in Southport that will open its doors in 2027. This centre will accommodate up to 450 boys and offer education, handson vocational training, a wellness hub, and even a community centre. The boys who come through MOB HQ will not only receive an education but will also learn trades and life skills that can set them on the path to a successful, fulfilling future.

The Power of Community

None of this would be possible without the help of the local community. Building MOB HQ is a massive undertaking, and it will require the support of people who believe in giving these boys a brighter future. Thats why MOB has launched a major fundraising campaign, asking the community to buy symbolic bricks for $1,000 each. These contributions will help raise the funds needed to build the new centre and expand MOB’s lifechanging work When we come together to support programs like MOB, we’re not just investing in the lives of these boys— we’re investing in a better future for everyone.

What started as a small initiative by Marco Renai, a 2024 QLD Australian of the Year, has blossomed into an incredible program that’s changing lives on the Gold Coast. Now, MOB is launching its most ambitious project yet: the new MOB HQ.

What defines a man today:

A JOURNEY FROM THE 1950S TO NOW!

The definition of masculinity has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past seventy years. Back in the 1950s, the “ideal man” was often viewed as the stoic family provider, a figure rigidly bound to traditional gender roles.

Fast forward to today, and we find a much more fluid understanding of manhood, shaped by the tides of societal change, gender equality, and evolving cultural norms.

The Dual Role of Provider and Caregiver

In the 1950s, men were primarily seen as breadwinners, with a clear divide between work and home life. Most families operated under the model where the husband worked while the wife managed the household and cared for the children. Success was largely measured by a man’s ability to provide financially.

Today, this dynamic has evolved. While men still value their role as providers, there’s a growing recognition of the importance of shared responsibilities at home. Fathers are stepping into caregiving roles, with stay-at-home dads becoming a common sight. This shift not only enriches family life but also redefines masculinity, showing that nurturing is a strength rather than a weakness.

Embracing Emotional Expression

In the 50’s men were encouraged to suppress their emotions. Strength was often equated with stoicism, and vulnerability was viewed as a flaw. The saying “Boys don’t cry” echoed through many households, reinforcing the notion that masculinity thrived on emotional restraint.

In contrast, modern masculinity celebrates emotional intelligence and openness. Men are now encouraged to express their feelings and prioritise their mental health. The conversation around men’s mental wellbeing is flourishing, helping to dismantle the stigma surrounding emotional expression. Today’s men are finding strength in vulnerability, paving the way for deeper connections with those around them.

Breaking Free from Rigid Gender Roles

The 1950s were characterized by strict gender roles, with men expected to embody dominance and assertiveness while women were relegated to supportive roles. This binary perspective shaped societal expectations, leaving little room for individuality.

Today, the landscape is rich with diversity and inclusivity. Men are no longer confined to a narrow definition of masculinity. The rise of LGBTQ+ movements and a broader understanding of gender fluidity have opened doors for men to express themselves authentically.

Redefining Career Aspirations

In the 1950s, a man’s career was often synonymous with his identity. Success was defined by climbing the corporate ladder, and deviations from this path were frowned upon. The pressure to provide and protect shaped many men’s professional journeys.

Today, career success is still valued, but the focus has shifted toward achieving a work-life balance. Men are increasingly prioritising personal fulfillment and family time over rigid corporate aspirations. The emergence of alternative career paths and the gig economy has paved the way for greater flexibility. Success is now measured not just by financial achievement but also by personal happiness and well-being.

Prioritising Health and Appearance

In the 1950s, physical fitness often took a backseat to a man’s role as a provider. The “dad bod” of that era didn’t raise many eyebrows

Today, men are encouraged to prioritise their physical and mental well-being. This emphasis on self-care and healthy lifestyles reflects a cultural shift toward recognizing the importance of longevity and overall health.

Today’s men can embrace roles as providers and caregivers, express their emotions, and redefine their identities in ways that were once unimaginable. While traditional values still hold importance, the modern man is characterized by his adaptability, emotional connectivity, and authenticity. In this ever-changing world, the definition of what it means to be a man is not only more inclusive but also richer and more meaningful than ever before.

Be The Reason They Find Home

This Christmas

Animal Welfare League

Queensland’s (AWLQ) Christmas fundraising appeal is now underway, running from late November until Christmas Eve.

This year’s campaign, “Be the reason they find home this Christmas” invites everyone to help change the lives of animals in need by making a donation.

The focus of the campaign is on the journeys of three very special shelter animals: Charlie, Roxy, and Nessie, along with her three kittens. Each of them faced an incredibly difficult beginning before coming into AWLQ’s care and receiving the emergency support, shelter and love they desperately needed. Each of these animals made a full recovery and have been lovingly adopted. But it was only made possible thanks to the generosity of AWLQ’s supporters.

To continue providing food, shelter, veterinary care, and love to thousands of animals in our care every day, AWLQ aims to raise $150,000 by Christmas Eve. We receive no government funding for our welfare work, so we can't achieve this goal without the community’s help.

YOUR DONATIONS CAN BE THE REASON AN ANIMAL FINDS HOME THIS CHRISTMAS

Christmas is a time for cosy cuddles, safety, and family – but for thousands of furry friends, it means loneliness and a whole lot of uncertainty. Right now, AWLQ shelters are bursting at the seams with lost and abandoned pets looking for a family to curl up with.

Your donation can make their dreams come true this Christmas. With every dollar, you’re helping deliver warm blankets for chilly nights, urgent medical attention, a plan to get them home – and all the TLC they need to heal in between. Together, we can give these pets the love, care and hope they deserve!

Join us in making their Christmas wish come true. And if you donate over $100 you automatically go in the draw to win a Visa gift card valued at $200!

AWLQ’s brand new Christmas ad has also been released. Make sure you have your tissues ready! You can catch the AWLQ Christmas ad at the cinemas through December prior to select movies.

If you're able to, please help change the lives of animals in our care and make a donation this holiday season. We help our animals heal, but your support is what gets them home.

AWLQ’s Christmas Adoption Campaign will also run from the 16th to the 24th of December, with reduced pet adoption fees in the hope to get many animals into their forever homes before Christmas.
