Spring Rejuvenation: Embrace a Fresh Start and Cultivate a Win-Win Mindset
— by Dee Hardy — Shifting Tides Counselling
As winter fades, spring brings a sense of renewal and a fresh start. It’s a perfect time to shed the weight of the past and embrace a more invigorated way of living. This season invites us to rejuvenate, both physically and mentally, and to create a balanced, harmonious life. One powerful way to achieve this is by shifting our mindset from win-lose conflicts to win-win solutions and allowing ourselves to be fully present and mindful.
Winter often makes us hunker down, not just physically but emotionally as well. We tend to hold onto grievances and frustrations and see conflicts as battles that must be won or lost. But as nature blooms, we can take inspiration from this process of growth and transformation. It’s time to brush off the cobwebs and let go of the need to hold onto negativity. Instead, we can approach conflicts with a mindset focused on mutual benefit and understanding.
Follow us on: Instagram: getitmag Facebook: get.it.mag
Adopting a win-win mindset means recognizing that conflict isn’t a zero-sum game. It involves understanding that both parties can achieve satisfaction and resolution. This shift encourages open communication, empathy, and a willingness to see things from another’s perspective. By doing so, we not only resolve conflicts more effectively but also build stronger, more trusting relationships.
As we move into spring, think about what you need to let go of to achieve a balanced life. Are there grudges, worries, or negative patterns that you’re holding onto? Letting go of these emotional burdens is like clearing out a cluttered closet—it creates space for new, positive experiences and relationships. Holding onto negativity can prevent us from experiencing true peace and happiness.
This spring, embrace renewal in all aspects of your life. Whether it’s through daily meditation, journaling, or spending time outdoors, commit to practices that keep you grounded and focused on the present. Let the spirit of spring guide you towards balance and positivity. Remember, just as nature renews itself, we too can refresh our perspectives, heal our relationships, and cultivate a fulfilling life. Make this season one of growth and transformation, and see how a win-win mindset can lead to greater harmony and fulfillment.

It’s hard to believe we’re already in September. But if you had any doubts, the weather would certainly set you straight.
I’m one of those people whose mood gets impacted by the weather, and the return of the sun has put an extra bounce in my step.
That’s why Spring is the perfect time to not only Spring declutter your home, but your life and your mind as well.
And let’s not forget our wardrobes! Spring means ditching the winter woolies and pulling out the sundresses and flowing skirts.

Personally, I love to get super organised at this time of year to ensure I enter the Christmas season with as little chaos around me as possible.
It isn’t always easy, especially with life seemingly getting busier and busier for all of us.
Throw some kids into the mix, and Spring rejuvenation takes a little more planning.
But if my view, it’s well worth the extra effort now, to enjoy the festive season in relative relaxation.
So, let us inspire you! Take a seat, check out our fresh, new issue, then get set to redo you.

Australian fashion label The Fable offers a range of silk shirts that epitomise versatility and elegance. Here are five distinct ways to style a silk shirt.
1. Office Ready
• Look: A silk shirt in a soft pastel or neutral shade, paired with tailored trousers and classic pumps.
• Styling: This look is perfect for the office. The silk shirt’s luxurious texture adds a touch of sophistication, while the tailored trousers keep the outfit professional. Add a delicate necklace and a structured handbag to complete the ensemble.
• Transformation: Switch the pumps for statement heels and add bold earrings to transition from office to a dinner date effortlessly.
2. Casual Chic
• Look: A silk shirt in a neutral tone, tucked into high-waisted jeans with ankle boots.
• Styling: Ideal for a leisurely day out or weekend lunch with friends. The relaxed fit of the jeans balances the refined nature of the silk shirt, creating a laidback yet polished look.
• Transformation: Layer with a chunky knit cardigan and swap the ankle boots for sneakers to achieve a more relaxed vibe suitable for running errands or a casual meet-up.

4. Holiday Chic
• Look: A silk shirt worn open over a swimsuit, paired with a favourite ball cap and dainty jewellery.

10 Common Myths regarding Hysterectomy
By Dr Graeme Walker, Gynaecologist & Colposcopist Founder of the Menstrual Misery Clinic
There appears to be a huge amount of misunderstanding regarding a hysterectomy, and therefore this article will attempt to make the operation of laparoscopic hysterectomy easier to understand by exploring te common myths.
There are 32,000 hysterectomies performed in Australia each year. The majority are for heavy menstrual bleeding, but other indications might include prolapse, endometriosis, cancer, or fibroids.
Most surgeries nowadays are performed laparoscopically through 3 x 5 mm incisions in the abdomen.
Myth 1
Will the hysterectomy cause instantaneous menopause with all its devastating side effects?
The answer is no. In the majority of cases we only take the womb, cervix and tubes, the ovaries are left behind, which has no immediate effect on hormones and therefore does not result in any menopausal symptoms at all.
There are a few rare cases when the ovaries are removed, but this is because the patient has ovarian or endometrial cancer or for other specific genetic reasons. For 95% of the general female population, the ovaries are not removed.
Myth 2
Will I still get a period after a hysterectomy?
I am pleased to say that although patients may experience spotting for up to 6 weeks post-surgery, patients will never have a period again, which is excellent news for women in general, but more so for those women requiring multiple iron infusions due to heavy periods.
Myth 3
After a hysterectomy, is there a hole created in the pelvis?
The uterus is usually quite small, certainly less than 10 cm in diameter, and the space created by removing it is filled almost instantly with the small bowel, which quite happily fills the very small space generated by a hysterectomy.
Myth 4
Does the cervix have to be removed? No, it can remain. However, there is no difference in prolapse, sexual function, urinary incontinence, or complications if we leave or remove the cervix, but if left behind, it may lead to annoying spotting, and you will have to continue to attend for pap smears.
Myth 5
A hysterectomy results in a long and difficult, restricted recovery: This is absolutely not the case. Most people go home either on the day of surgery or the following day.
In my private practice, I review all of my patients seven days post-op, and interestingly, for the majority, you cannot tell that they had surgery a week ago.
There are however, certain rules to follow post-operatively, as there are for any surgery, and these include no swimming, taking baths, or going to the gym for up to 4 weeks, although showers are perfectly fine. In addition, no sex for 8 weeks.
Myth 6
For those patients who have HPV identified during a pap smear, a hysterectomy will get rid of it: Absolutely not. The virus can live in the cervix or the vagina. Getting rid of the cervix via a hysterectomy will remove the cervix but not the virus. You will still require a pap smear of the vagina, potentially for several years.
Patients who are HPV negative at the time of hysterectomy and are on a 5-year recall will never require another pap smear though!
Myth 7
Hysterectomy is the only treatment for heavy periods: False. There are many other treatment options for heavy periods, and these include fairly basic options such as the contraceptive pill, Mirena, endometrial ablation, Ukraine Artery embolization and, in some cases, a drug called Zoladex. However, there are a certain number of patients who have tried a selection of the above options to no avail.
If you have any questions, please contact our team at info@drgraemewalker.com.au
For more information contact:
When they comment during the consultation, “I am over it,” you know that the patient has reached the end of their tether and is essentially requesting a hysterectomy in the knowledge that post-procedure, these patients will join a growing band of women who state that “hysterectomy is the best thing that they have ever done.”
Myth 8
A hysterectomy will result in a prolapse: There are mixed results in the published literature, and the conclusion really is that prolapse is likely to be multifactorial and increased by multiple factors, including the presence of pre-existing prolapse, age, menopausal status, surgical technique, and the number of pregnancies. In my experience, prolapse following a hysterectomy is not at all common.
Myth 9
Sex will be worse following a hysterectomy:
Again, no definitive conclusion is reported, but most women seem to report improved or better sexual function after a hysterectomy, perhaps because those who suffer from chronic pelvic pain or discomfort from other conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids have that source of pain removed, therefore enhancing overall sexual wellbeing.

Dr Walker has performed well over 1000 laparoscopic hysterectomies with a highly selective dedicated team performing each operation resulting in exceptional efficiency and minimal complications.
He is the only surgeon in Australia that routinely allows patients to go home on the same day of surgery if that is the wish of the patient.
250 patients have chosen that wish of day case hysterectomies as their first choice, with the patient’s journey being published in the peer-reviewed RANZCOG journal.
For those women with profound, uncontrolled, heavy irregular periods, there are obvious benefits to having no uterus!
Myth 10
A hysterectomy is a risky surgical procedure: Thankfully not. Like any surgical procedure, there are risks, but serious ones are rare. Most commonly, there are superficial wound infections, maybe a UTI or constipation.
Risks such as bleeding, damage to the bowel or bladder or clots in the leg are minimised due to advances in laparoscopic surgical techniques and improvements in theatre efficiency and vast improvement in the clarity of laprascopic vision.

Find your decorating mojo!
How to find your decorating style.
By Kylie Harding from Styled to Sell
Mid-century or contemporary, Hollywood/Luxe or Boho, it can be difficult to decide on a look for your home.
But before you get too stressed out remember, it’s not rocket science, so don’t overthink it.
You don’t need a design degree to choose a decorating style for your home. It’s your home after all and should reflect you –there’s no right or wrong.
There are also a couple of key misconceptions, such as: choosing a style has to be expensive.
Investment pieces like sofas and dining tables should be neutral (in both style and colour) and add your style with accessories – rich emerald cushions for a glam look, blue and white for Hamptons. This way, if you change your mind, you can change your look without breaking the bank.
Here’s another myth. Once you’ve chosen a style, you have to stick with it – forever.
In 25 years as a stylist, I’ve worked with many clients to update or change their style. Fashions, trends people and lifestyles change over time – so will your decorating style so take inspiration from a few different styles – it’s your house after all.
SO HOW DO YOU FIND YOUR STYLE?
There are quizzes you can take, courses you can do and there’s the ever-reliable Pinterest boards to follow and collect, but try this – and trust me, there’s method to my madness.
STEP 1: Find a full-length mirror and look at what you’re wearing. Is it a black and white striped top, boho dress or pastel linen pants and top? Perhaps you’re a lover of bright colours and flowing fabrics. You can go to your wardrobe too – see what colours and styles dominate.
Take a few photos and start a ‘my style’ album in your phone.
We’ll come back to these later.
STEP 2: Look at these images and see which one you’re drawn to. Don’t overthink it, trust your instincts. Remember, first impressions count!
A: Contemporary: On trend colours, textures and shapes define this style. Readily available at your local furniture store, this style is fresh and continuously changes as trends come and go.
B: Boho: The boho style includes textures and colours, flowing fabrics and cosy corners. Linen sofas, wicker chairs and element of nature – think plants and accessories in earthly tones like olive green and terracotta.
C: Luxe/Hollywood glam: Bold and Beautiful – include gold, marble, mirrors and rich colours to achieve this style. Designer coffee table books, velvet and statement pieces are often featured.
D: Mid-century: Functional design, clean lines, mid-century style accessories are solid colours and serve a purpose –think magazine racks, candle holders and vases.
Going back to your wardrobe. Many of my clients are surprised that their fashion style and decorating style are the same or similar. It’s my experience that if your favourite outfit is a bright multi coloured kaftan- you’re unlikely to be drawn to a midcentury style.
At the end of the day, your home should reflect those living in it – and often that means it will be a mix of a few styles and that’s a wonderful thing.
And if it all gets too much, look for a local stylist that can give you some guidance.
Happy styling.

UNVEIL RADIANT SKIN WITH THE POWER OF
Australian Pink Clay
By Kim Guseli Cosmetic Chemist
In the world of skincare, clay masks stand out as a natural and effective way to achieve a radiant complexion. Among the various types of clays available, Australian pink clay has garnered a reputation for its unique benefits and gentle nature. Let’s delve into why it should be your new skincare essential.
Australian pink clay is a blend of red and white clays, creating a perfect balance that suits all skin types, even the most sensitive. This mineral-rich clay is packed with silica, magnesium, selenium, and zinc, each contributing to its skin-loving properties.
The benefits!
Deep Cleansing: One of the standout features of Australian pink clay is its ability to deeply cleanse the skin, feeling fresh and clean. This thorough cleansing helps to unclog pores and re=duce the likelihood of breakouts.
Gentle Exfoliation: Australian pink clay provides a mild exfoliating effect, removing dead skin cells and promoting a smoother, more refined skin texture. This gentle exfoliation enhances your skin’s natural glow and improves the effectiveness of other skincare products.
Hydration and Nourishment: Unlike some other clays that can be drying, Australian pink clay helps nourish the skin, ensuring that it stays soft, supple, and radiant. This makes it particularly beneficial for those with dry or sensitive skin.
Brightening Effect: Regular use of Australian pink clay masks can lead to a brighter and more luminous complexion. The minerals in the clay work to visibly improve skin tone, giving you a youthful and radiant look.
“AUSTRALIAN PINK CLAY IS A VERSATILE AND BENEFICIAL ADDITION TO ANY SKINCARE ROUTINE ”
The Convenience of Solid Single-Portion Clay Face Masks
For those seeking a hassle-free skincare experience, solid single-portion clay face masks are a game-changer. These premeasured masks eliminate the mess and fuss often associated with traditional clay masks. There’s no need to worry about measuring out the right amount of product or dealing with bowls and spoons. Simply take a single portion, crush it in your hand, and mix with a few drops of water to form a smooth paste. This innovation ensures you get the perfect amount of clay every time, making the application process quick, easy, and efficient. It’s an ideal solution for busy lifestyles, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of a clay mask without any of the preparation hassle.
Enhance Your Clay Mask Experience
Customise Your Mask: Experiment by adding natural ingredients like honey, yogurt, or aloe vera to your pink clay mask for additional hydration and nourishment.
Multi-Masking: Combine Australian pink clay with other clays for a multi-masking experience. Apply different clays to different areas of your face based on your skin’s needs.
Make It a Ritual: Incorporate your clay mask into a weekly self-care routine. Light a candle, play some soothing music, and take this time to relax and pamper yourself.
Australian pink clay is a versatile and beneficial addition to any skincare routine. Its ability to detoxify, exfoliate, hydrate, and brighten the skin makes it a standout choice for achieving a radiant and healthy complexion. Embrace the natural power of Australian pink clay and discover the transformative benefits it can bring to your skin.

Doctors said it was just Anxiety... but I could have died
It’s been two years and eight months since my life as I knew it changed, after I received my Covid19 Vaccination booster shot. Within hours I could barely stand up. I was dizzy and shaking, with a fever and chills. It felt like a brick wall was crushing my chest. It was a struggle to breathe. My heart rate jumped up to 140bpm with violent palpitations. The chest pain was so sharp, I thought it might be a heart attack. I was living on my own at the time and I was terrified I was going to die.
Cue multiple doctors appointments and hospital emergency department visits over the next few weeks, with a few ambulance rides thrown in for good measure.
I kept going back to the hospital, because the pain was getting worse and this is where the extreme gaslighting kicked in.
“It’s just anxiety”, “There is nothing wrong with you”, “You’re stressing for nothing,”
“Stop wasting our doctors time”, “You should try yoga”, “You need to see a psychiatrist!”, were just some of the things I was told, with an occasional condescending eye-roll from the medical staff.
Despite my pain levels increasing, my symptoms were continuously dismissed. I wasn’t being taken seriously and no one was listening. My boss asked if I was going to make it a habit of being sick like this all the time? Even some of my friends thought I was making it up, I was called a hypochondriac, an anti-vaxxer and even a conspiracy theorist.
Back at the hospital… “It’s just anxiety deary, this will calm you down”, said a nurse on one occasion, while she injected me with an anti-psychotic medication against my will.
The experience sadly echoes that of far too many women who have also been medically gaslit, turned away and told that their symptoms are simply stress or anxiety. It’s not ok, it’s medical misogyny and two out of three women say they’ve experienced it. How many other women in Australia are suffering needlessly, struggling with undiagnosed chronic conditions or tragically lose their lives due to the lack of proper medical attention?
In my situation as it turned out, it wasn’t anxiety and I could have died. I knew something was wrong and kept going back to the doctors no matter how stupid they made me feel each time. Besides the chest pain, it felt like my body was 100 years old. I got short of breath from the simplest things like taking a shower or doing a load of laundry. It felt like my heart was running a constant marathon and the fatigue became debilitating. I barely had the energy to get dressed some days.
But I had to find the strength. My gut told me to keep fighting for answers, and I’ve always been a little stubborn, so there was no way I was going to give up.
After nearly three months of hell, a female doctor finally took me seriously and listened to my chest with her stethoscope. “I can hear a pericardial rub,” she said nodding. I had no idea what she was talking about. “You have Pericarditis, it’s inflammation of the outside lining of your heart”. I burst into tears, not because I had just been told that something was wrong with my heart, but because of the validation and sheer relief that I wasn’t going mad, it wasn’t in my head and that someone believed me.
I was hospitalised and put on strong medications, but unfortunately this didn’t cure the condition. The vaccine’s spike protein kept retriggering the inflammation. I had developed an autoimmune inflammatory response. It’s like my entire body was under constant attack from an unknown enemy that no one knew how to go to war with.
I went from cardiologist to cardiologist, had so many X-rays, ultrasounds, MRIs and CT scans, I probably glow in the dark from all the radiation! Eventually, the doctors discovered I had suffered a second heart condition – Myocarditis, a potentially lifethreatening inflammation of the inside muscle of my heart, which is now chronic and I live with every minute of every day.
Despite how awful this is, I consider myself lucky. Had I not listened to my body and kept rejecting the ‘anxiety card’ I was given, and kept pushing for the right tests and diagnosis, I could have had a heart attack and not been alive to share my story today.
Nearly three years in, I continue to battle the injury with trial medications and therapies, but gratefully, I now have some wonderful doctors on my team. Some days are a little better than others, and some days I just do the bare necessities
to reserve enough mental, physical and emotional energy to get to the next day.
There is still a huge mountain in front of me to climb, but like every challenge in life, you have to stay positive, have courage and the belief that you can conquer it!
As women, we need to better trust our gut instincts. We need to listen to our bodies, speak up, speak louder, and advocate for one another. We need to push back against the medical gaslighting. It only becomes acceptable…if we let it be.

Discover the Power of Plasma Fibroblast Treatment:
A REVOLUTIONARY NON-INVASIVE SOLUTION
In the dynamic world of beauty and aesthetics, staying updated with the latest advancements is key. Plasma Fibroblast treatment has emerged as a revolutionary non-invasive technique, offering impressive results by harnessing your body’s natural healing process. Unlike traditional surgery, which can sometimes create an overdone look, Plasma Fibroblast revitalizes your skin naturally, minimizing risks while delivering stunning, natural results.
HOW DOES PLASMA FIBROBLAST WORK?
The effectiveness of Plasma Fibroblast lies in its unique use of plasma energy. During the procedure, a small device emits a plasma arc just above the skin’s surface, creating tiny controlled micro dots. These dots trigger the skin to contract and tighten, promoting a natural healing process. Over the next few days, the micro dots flake away, revealing tightened skin and an instant lifting effect. The result is a more youthful appearance without the need for surgery.
At LuxBodi, we use state-of-the-art technology approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) to ensure the highest standards of care and results.
BENEFITS OF PLASMA FIBROBLAST
• Non-Invasive and Safe: Plasma Fibroblast is non-invasive, working by stimulating the skin’s natural healing process without the need for incisions or anesthesia. This significantly reduces risks compared to traditional surgery.
• Minimal Downtime: With minimal downtime, most clients can return to their daily activities within a week. Minor swelling and scabbing are temporary and manageable, making it a convenient option for those with busy lifestyles.
• Long-Lasting Results: Often, a single session provides long-lasting results that can last several years, depending on skin type and lifestyle. This makes it a cost-effective solution for maintaining a radiant appearance.
• Versatility: This treatment effectively addresses various skin concerns, such as sagging skin, fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture. Whether it’s lifting the neck, rejuvenating the eye area, or smoothing forehead lines, Plasma Fibroblast can be customized to meet individual needs.
• Natural Results: Plasma Fibroblast works with your body’s natural processes, ensuring subtle and harmonious enhancements that align with your natural features, avoiding the overdone look.
EMBRACE THE TRANSFORMATION WITH CONFIDENCE
Plasma Fibroblast treatment offers a path to a youthful, rejuvenated appearance with minimal downtime. At LuxBodi, our focus is on delivering exceptional outcomes, helping clients experience the transformative power of this innovative, non-invasive procedure. Rejuvenate your skin, and let your natural beauty shine.

The impact of vaping on your skin
Skin expert, Isabella Loneragan, breaks down the Impacts of vaping on Skin
While studies on the long-term health implications of vaping are ongoing, there is clear evidence that the damage extends to your skin too, exacerbating a bevy of skin conditions including acne, rosacea, fine lines and wrinkles, and even spurring the formation of ‘smoker’s lips.’
Award-winning skin and dermal therapist, Isabella Loneragan, says vaping may be the culprit behind a noticeable rise in skin complaints from young people in particular.
“I have noticed an increase in younger people visiting my clinic who are fairly frustrated with their skin and now, one of the first questions I ask is whether they vape because, although vaping hasn’t been around for too long, its impacts on skin are proving just as bad – if not worse – than cigarette smoking,” explains Isabella.
According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, one in five Australians have tried an e-cigarette at least once, and almost one in ten aged 18-24 vape daily.
“Akin to cigarette smoking, vaping incorporates an inhalation of toxins and so it’s inevitable that some of these toxins will
be deposited in the skin, causing damage to the skin barrier and inflammation impacting the skin’s ability to function normally.
“One of the most significant impacts of vaping is an exacerbation of acne. More and more studies are showing that the nicotine in e-cigarettes can constrict blood vessels and reduce blood flow to the skin, which leads to inflammation and the development of flares of acne,” she says.
Vaping can also cause an overproduction of sebum, which is the oily substance that clogs pores and can lead to breakouts. The chemicals in e-cigarettes can disrupt the skin’s microbiome also contributing to the development of acne flares.
“Another condition that is clearly impacted by vaping is rosacea – a chronic condition that causes redness and inflammation on the face. Vaping aggravates rosacea due to the presence of chemicals and irritants in e-cigarettes. The nicotine in vapes –like cigarettes – causes blood vessels to constrict, leading to a worsening of rosacea symptoms,” says Isabella.
“While studies are currently quite limited, there are also viable scientific suggestions that vaping triggers rosacea flare-ups and may even make existing rosacea symptoms worse.”
It should come as no surprise that vaping also can result in premature ageing and the development of fine lines and wrinkles.
“The chemicals in e-cigarettes are known to cause oxidative stress, damaging collagen and elastin which are the proteins that keep skin firm and youthful looking.
“I can confidently state as a fact that vaping spurs dull and uneven complexion – just as cigarettes do. Over time, this contributes to the development of fines and wrinkles.
“Even the dreaded ‘smoker’s lips’ side effect of cigarette smoking is showing in those who vape. This is the formation of vertical perioral lines around the lips simply due to an overuse of the muscle to purse your lips to a vape,” says Isabella.
When it comes to reversing the impacts of vaping on the skin, Isabella says this may not be possible.
“Obviously, avoiding smoking and vaping altogether is my recommendation for radiant and healthy skin; but for those who do vape, I’d suggest keeping yourself hydrated and eating a healthy diet as a means of limiting the impacts of vaping. Of course, using sunscreen daily is also a must,” adds Isabella.

The Benefits of Early Diagnosis and Treatment of Skin Cancer
Did you know that spotting the signs of skin cancer early and getting a prompt diagnosis can significantly improve your chances of survival? Australia has the highest skin cancer rate globally, but early detection and treatment can greatly enhance survival rates. Regular self-exams and professional skin checks are essential for identifying skin cancer in its early stages.
Risk Factors for Skin Cancer
Prevention begins with recognising the factors that can increase your risk of developing skin cancer. Here are some key risk factors to be aware of:
• Excessive UV Exposure
• Fair Skin
• Moles
• Family History of Skin Cancer
• Age
What changes to look for :
• New moles
• Moles that increase in size
• Moles that itch or tingle
• Moles that bleed or weep
• An outline of a mole that comes irregular
• Changes in colour
• Rough, scaly or ulcerated surfaces
Skin Protection as a Preventative Measure
Protecting your skin from the sun is a crucial measure in preventing skin cancer. Here are some effective ways to stay safe: Use Sunscreen 30+ or above
Skin cancer rates in Australia are alarmingly high, with an estimated 2 in 3 people being diagnosed in their lifetime. Despite this, many individuals, particularly younger ones, often underestimate the risk. Regular skin checks are crucial
for early detection, significantly enhancing the likelihood of successful treatment by identifying lesions when they are most treatable. Early detection helps lower mortality rates and prevents the disease from progressing to more severe stages.
Regular Skin Checks as a First Line of Defence
Regular skin checks at the Australian Skin Cancer Clinics is your first line of defence against skin cancer. A skin check is one of the best ways to detect skin cancers early and can save your life. Skin checks take between 15 and 20 minutes and during that time your doctor will perform a full body check. If your doctor finds a suspicious spot on your skin, they may remove it or perform a biopsy (removing a small sample of tissue for detailed examination at a laboratory).
FOSTER CARING
saves animals’ lives
Animal Welfare League QLD (AWLQ) foster carer Gemma West isn’t your typical cat owner. When she was living in Germany, with her German husband, she fell in love with a cat she named Lamington.
“My husband and I adopted him from a farm in Germany. We brought him home to Australia from Germany with us. Quarantine stuff was quite the adventure! Lamington was bilingual. I would speak English to him, and my husband would speak German to him. And Lamington would respond to both of us!”
After her beloved Lamington passed away, a void was left in her life. Gemma wasn’t ready for another permanent feline friend, but her love for cats remained. This is how Gemma found her calling as a foster carer for AWLQ.
For the past three and a half years, Gemma has opened her home to countless cats and kittens in need (97 in fact!).
“I wasn’t really ready to have another cat of my own,” Gemma explains, “but I really liked cats and kittens, and I sort of wondered about having a feline friend around me again.”
One of Gemma’s most special fostering experiences involved a mama cat named Puss Puss. Rescued from a caravan park on the Gold Coast, Puss Puss arrived heavily pregnant just before Christmas 2022.
Gemma lovingly cared for Puss Puss and her six “Christmas bundle” kittens. Each kitten had a festive name, perfectly complementing their arrival time. Gemma describes Puss Puss as a “great mama cat” who raised her kittens with love.
After 14 weeks, the time came for the kittens to find their forever homes. While Gemma admits it’s always difficult to say goodbye, she views it as a success.
“I see it as graduation day,” she explains. “They’re ready to go off to their forever family.” Having so much cuteness at her home has made Gemma quite the popular figure for visitors.
“A friend of mine and her daughter (I call them socialisation officers) often come over to have a cup of tea and play with the kittens. The kittens get exposure to different people. So when they do go for adoption, they’re already socialised.”
Foster Carers Needed
Fostering with AWLQ is rewarding in many ways. The organisation covers the cost of all the necessities for the fostered animals, including food, litter and even litter trays. Gemma highlights the educational aspect as well, with AWLQ providing training on caring for neonates and other special needs cats.
Perhaps the biggest perk is the joy Gemma brings to others.
“I’m known as the crazy cat lady at work,” she laughs. “I work remotely, so I spend my entire life on Zoom calls. When I’ve got kittens, I can keep an eye on them all day.”
Her colleagues are constantly requesting photos and updates on the feline residents that grace her home office. Even the CEO demands to see the kittens before meetings get underway!
Gemma’s passion for fostering is contagious. Her story not only highlights the heartwarming bond between humans and animals but also the sense of community fostered by organisations like the AWLQ.

Filling the gap in the health and fitness industry, StretchLab Ashmore is providing Gold Coasters with a new outlet to alleviate the aches and pains we experience from injury, chronic pain, workloads, or general life. There’s no one reason as to why people start visiting StretchLab. In our Ashmore Studio, we assist clients with a range of goals and lifestyles. No matter what brings you to StretchLab, the benefits of a professional-assisted stretching routine are tremendous.
Some of the benefits:
IMPROVED SPORTS PERFORMANCE: relieving tightness in the body to help our body move more e ciently, as well as assisting in injury prevention and recovery so we can play more.
INCREASE IN RANGE OF MOTION AND FLEXIBILITY: incorporating a proper stretching routine increases the body’s range of motion and flexibility, making everyday tasks easier and improving your quality of life.
REDUCED MUSCLE AND JOINT PAIN: Stretching can help to alleviate muscle tension, reducing the pain in tender or sore areas and joint pain, as well as aid in injury and pain prevention.
IMPROVED POSTURE: Proper alignment and balance through stretching helps improve overall posture and allows you to stand taller.
In studio, you’re paired with a “Flexologist,” who will lead you through either a 25 minute or 50 minute fully assisted stretch, where they customise the session to individual needs and goals, taking into consideration any injuries, aches, or pains.
The style of stretching is referred to as Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF), and with guided breathing, your Flexologist coaches you through the stretching session safely. PNF stretching is designed to improve muscle elasticity through simple stretching and contracting of the targeted muscle.
REDUCED STRESS: Stretching benefits both your physical well-being and mental health, allowing the blood and oxygen to flow better, improving mental clarity.
In the few months that our studios have been open, it’s been an amazing journey to see the positive impact on people’s health and wellness journeys. We’d love to assist with yours.
Beyond the Burnout:
Recognizing Achievement as a Destructive Coping Mechanism
By Sheena Schuy “The Burnout Therapist”
Why Becoming Obsessed with “Achievement” Can Be Destructive
Basing your value on busyness and achievements can cause anxiety, feelings of inadequacy, and the constant need to do more. This often stems from parents who only showed love and praise when you achieved something, such as good grades or sports performance. Today, we recognize the importance of praising children for their achievements as well as their personalities, humour, and perspectives.
As a therapist, I believed success meant always having a full schedule, being available for clients, creating content, working out, being the perfect mom, and managing the household while my husband worked FIFO. It was exhausting and led to my final burnout. I realized I needed to approach business differently, focusing on my personality, short-term goals of being present for my young kids, and long-term goals in mental health and business.
When we find ourselves in stressful situations, it’s common to turn to coping mechanisms to survive. These mechanisms can be positive or negative. While drugs and alcohol are obvious examples, there are less obvious but equally damaging ones. I used one that led to repeated burnouts.
I grew up with anxiety and self-worth issues, feeling out of place. I initially coped with excessive drinking and experimentation, but I soon realized I was losing my identity. I then turned to achievement and work as my coping mechanism. Believing that productivity would bring acceptance and love, I pursued a second master’s degree, worked long hours, and raised my two kids, leading to several burnouts. Each burnout required months to recover. I finally understood that my obsession with achievement stemmed from childhood trauma and anxiety.
Since identifying areas to offload and limiting my consulting hours through better-aligned packages, I’ve been more present and flexible, striving to be the mom I want to be.
If you equate achievement and productivity with self-worth, it’s time to assess the cost. Evaluate what brings you joy and what causes stress. Consider seeking a mentor to help reorganize your life and business, and work on rewiring your self-worth for your long-term mental health.

Spring into Shape: Kickstart Your Health and Fitness Journey for Summer
It may seem like we only just farewelled winter, but summer is already a mere 10 weeks away. That not only means swimwear but also indulgent Christmas parties. Think long balmy days spent at the beach, making it even harder to find time for the gym.
So, if you’re planning to feel strong and confident this year, now is the time to act.
Not sure where to start?
Well, we’ve got a few ideas to get you going!
How about building a new plan?
With the onset of spring comes a sense of relief: the mornings are lighter, the days and nights warmer, and our outfits are a little bit more colourful. It’s also the perfect time to kick your health and fitness regime into gear.
Commit to a minimum amount of training sessions each week and set them into your diary just like any other appointment, such as work or a family dinner. If it’s scheduled, then it’s more likely to be treated as a priority.
Nutrition game plan
Sometimes, even if you’re training like a Trojan, your nutrition can hold you back. If you’re struggling to see results, taking a look at what you’re putting into your body can be a good place to start. Ask your trainer about scheduling a nutrition session so we can kick any concerns to the curb and ensure you’re eating your way to a better body.
Set a shiny new goal
As you will probably have noticed by now, here at Vision Personal Training, we’re big fans of goal-setting. Not only does it give you a target to work towards, but it also makes sure that you get results that will really make a difference in your life. What better time than now to sit down in a goal session with your trainer and work out a new goal to get you all motivated, inspired, and ready for action?
Sign up for an event
Sometimes, training for an event can give you just the focus that you need to get on track; fortunately, the event calendar is bursting with sporting antics. From running events to adventure races and ocean swims, the Gold Coast has plenty to offer this summer.
Go shopping
Now that those woolly winter clothes have been banished to the back of the wardrobe, it’s time to start channelling summer. Shops are filled with the new season’s collections, so why not have a browse and treat yourself to something new? A few new additions to the wardrobe are the perfect motivation to get working on that summer body.
HEAD TO THE
hills
A wise man once said: “It is beautiful to talk about beautiful things and even more beautiful to silently gaze at them.” After a weekend at Heartwood Farm in the Byron Hinterland, we agree.
There’s something to be said for quiet and hidden. Especially when it comes to the perfect getaway. Behind Byron Bay, just a short, picturesque drive past the quirkiness of Bangalow lies the mostly unknown and undiscovered tiny town of Federal. Beloved by locals and those in the know, it has a quintessential rural Australian soul. Home to the renowned Doma Café and historic Federal General Store, this green and lush hinterland is ripe for exploration.
It’s here we find ourselves one wintery weekend. After a week of wild and rainy weather, the grasses and forests glisten with dewdrops and vitality, an energy which fills us up with its natural beauty.
We only left the Gold Coast forty minutes ago, but we have been transported to another land, as we follow the long and windy gravel driveway past the owner’s cabin and arrive at Heartwood, our cottage for the next two nights. It’s picture perfect: pale grey batten walls, white window frames and old-fashioned wooden shades. Forget another land, we’re in another century.
The owner’s three dogs excitedly greet us, offering up frisbees and balls to play. Our children immediately scatter, to play with the dogs and explore the flat spaces nestled amongst the 100 acre cattle farm.
We take it more slowly, to appreciate the sweeping valley and hillside views, the pockets of settlements dotted with similarly-styled cottages. The trees line the horizon in a 360 degree perimeter – beyond this lies the glistening shores of Byron. But for now, the crowds and traffic are far away; here, we follow the grassed-edged pathway, past the outdoor firepit, to the front door and take a deep breath: we’ve arrived. The views are breathtaking, but the interiors of Heartwood Farm cottage give the outdoors a run for its money. Decorated with care, imagination, and a nod to its federal and antique roots,
Words: Charmaine Yabsley
the navy, green and white decor is fresh, breezy and immediately welcoming. The large kitchen has everything you would need, with a large fridge, dishwasher, stove and kitchen window overlooking the gardens. There is a separate living room with large TV and family games, and the master bedroom has a delicious nook carved out of the space – perfect for reading in the afternoon setting sun. The second bedroom is equally large and comfortable, and sits next to the immaculate bathroom, complete with rolltop bath.
There are two balconies to choose from too – an embarrassment of riches. Furnished with greyed cane furniture, generously cushioned, the west deck is ideal for evening drinks, while the east balcony overlooks the other star of the property –the heated inground pool. Surrounded by well-tended gardens, decking and a safety fence, the round pool is deliciously warm, even on this cool winter’s day.
When there’s so much space and stillness, where do you start your stay? We head down the back of the property, followed by the friendly dogs, to the Wilson River. Just 600 metres from the cottage, Craig, one of the the owners, has helpfully mown an easy-to-follow pathway. The track loops around to give visitors the full tour of the river and land. Heartwood’s other owner Nicole had thoughtfully told us to pack gumboots, and after the wet weather they came in handy for our explorations. The river is, the owner tells us, the perfect spot for swimming, fishing and lazy summer picnics. (There are rugs in the cottage to use or buy from Wandering Folk.)
After a dinner of pizzas (Nicole also keeps the freezer stocked with locallymade pizzas which you can purchase, so there’s no need to leave the house. You can also buy wine, spirits and coffee from her supples), we sparked up the fire. An evening by the roaring flames, roasting marshmallows and sharing stories and our weekend was off to the best possible start.
A slow morning mist, tea on the east deck and we were ready for the day: the beaches of Byron beckoned. The town’s Saturday markets were on, so, eager to avoid the crowds, we headed to Wategos where the water was warm enough to swim and the beaches empty enough to enjoy some soccer and volleyball. Eager to spot some sea life, we took the walking track to the Byron lighthouse for some whale and dolphin sightings.
After a day in the sun, relaxing, reading, swimming and eating, our short drive home was the perfect way to ease back into the beauty of silence. We headed to the west deck, poured a glass of wine and tucked into some local cheeses, olives and baguettes. We toasted to the beauty surrounding us and gazed upon the peaceful environs that had well and truly won our hearts.

• Pop your Hungarian sweet paprika, ground cumin, celery salt, garlic salt, chilli powder, cayenne pepper and oregano into a small dish. Mix with a spoon until well combined.
For the cob filling
• Place your corn into a medium saucepan, and place over medium heat. Cook for around 5 – 10 minutes, until all the moisture evaporates and the kernels begin to slightly char around the edges. Remove from the pan and set aside.
• Pre-heat the oven to 200°C / 400°F (fan forced).
• In the same saucepan, add the rinsed black beans and cook for 5 – 10 minutes on medium heat until the moisture has evaporated and the beans become mushy. Add in your crushed tomatoes and Mexican spice mix, then stir until heated through (around 2-4 minutes). Optional: If your sauce is running a little dry, add ¼ cup of water and mix through.
• Switch off the heat and evenly distribute into your mini cob loafs then top each with a sprinkle of the tasty cheese.
• Place them onto a tray and pop into the oven. Bake until the cheese has melted, around 3 minutes. Optional: You can lay the bread inside pieces out on a lined tray and place in the oven underneath the mini cob loaves to dry and crispen up for an alternative dipping experience.
• Now it’s time to layer up! Spoon in the sour cream, mild salsa, charred corn and avocado into the cobs.
• To serve, place a mini cob on each plate surrounded by the bread’s insides, and stick a few corn chips on the top to dip in as well.
Gado Gado
Ingredients:
For the peanut sauce
• ½ cup peanut butter, natural crunchy or smooth, 120 g
• ⅓ cup coconut milk
• ⅓ cup water
• 3 tbsp kecap manis / sweet soy sauce, sub brown sugar
• 2 Thai makrut / kaffir lime leaves, stems removed, chopped extra fine
• 3 tsp garlic, finely chopped
• 1 tsp ginger, sub galangal
• ¼ tsp tamarind paste, sub 1 tsp lime juice
Optional
• 1 small red chilli, sub 1 tsp chilli sambal or sambal oelek
• ½ tsp shrimp powder, belacan / terasi, sub 1 tsp fish sauce or soy sauce
For the salad base
• 2 potatoes, cubed and boiled
• 1 cup green beans, halved and blanched
• 1 carrot, julienne sliced
• 1 cup bean sprouts, blanched
• 1 cup cucumber, chopped
• 2 lettuce leaves, roughly chopped
• 100 g fried tofu cubed, sub tempeh
• 2 eggs, boiled and halved
• 1 tomato, quartered
• 1 tbsp vegetable oil, for frying
Method:
For the peanut sauce
• Pop your peanut butter, coconut milk, water, kecap manis / sweet soy sauce, Thai makrut / kaffir lime leaves, garlic, ginger, tamarind paste and optional small red chilli and shrimp powder (belacan / terasi) into a small saucepan over low medium heat.
• Stir to bring everything together, until well combined and it thickens nicely.
• Here you have the choice to make the sauce as thick or thin as you like. Add more water to your liking to get the consistency you want.
For the salad base
• Prep your veggies by washing, blanching and boiling everything you want to have on your plate.
• If adding fried tofu or tempeh, we like to fry it on low medium heat for a few minutes with vegetable oil until hot and crispy.
• Time to pile it all up! Get out two bowls and arrange with your potatoes, green beans, carrot, bean sprouts, lettuce leaves and fried tofu.
• Pour over half the peanut sauce over each bowl, then top with the tomato and eggs.
• Optionally, add an extra drizzle of kecap manis, a sprinkling of crushed peanuts and a few krupuk (prawn crackers).
Spicy Korean BBQ Chicken
Bulgogi – Dak Bulgogi
Ingredients:
• 500 g chicken thighs boneless skinless chicken pieces sliced into small strips or minced
• 2 spring onion / green onion, green sections only to garnish (white sections in marinade)
• ½ tbsp sesame seeds, to garnish
• 6 perilla leaves / shiso leaves, sliced into strips, sub spinach leaves, lettuce, rice or omit.
• 1 tbsp vegetable oil
For the marinade
• ½ onion, chopped finely
• 2 spring onion / green onion, white sections only, chopped finely
• 2 garlic, chopped finely
• 1 tbsp soy sauce
• 1 tbsp cooking rice wine / cooking sake
• 1 tbsp Korean hot pepper flakes / gochugaru
• 1 tbsp Korean hot pepper paste / gochujang, double to make it extra spicy
• 1 tbsp honey, sub brown sugar or maple syrup
• 1 tbsp cornstarch, sub all purpose flour or potato starch
• 1 tsp sesame oil
• ½ tsp ginger grated
Method:
• Place the chicken pieces in a large bowl then add in your marinade ingredients (onion, spring onion, garlic, soy sauce, rice wine, gochugaru, gochujang, honey, cornstarch, sesame oil and ginger).
• Mix everything together until combined and the chicken is coated well. Pop a silicone lid over the top and place in the fridge for a minimum of 30 minutes (up to overnight).
• Cut the green portions of the spring onions in half, then slice thinly lengthways and place the strips into a small container of water. This will help curl them for your garnish. Alternatively, you can just slice them small and sprinkle over the top – it’s up to you!
• Pour the vegetable oil into a large frying pan or skillet over a medium high heat. Add in your marinated chicken and spread it right out to the edges. Allow to cook for a few minutes before flipping all the chicken pieces over. Keep frying for another few minutes, then flip again. Note: Avoiding moving the chicken around too much helps the meat cook through and the sauce to thicken. Fry for another 5 or so minutes or until the chicken is cooked through.
• To serve, place the perilla / spinach strips on the bottom of a plate and layer with the chicken. Top with your spring onion curls and a sprinkling of sesame seeds, then dig in! Alternatively, serve with lettuce and rice to make cups.
• 1-2 spring onion / green onion, sliced (half for batter & half for garnish)
• ½ cup corn, tinned
• 1 tbsp vegetable oil, for cooking
For the toppings
• 2 tbsp kewpie mayonnaise
• 2 tbsp okonomiyaki sauce
• 1 tsp seaweed flakes / aonori
• 1 tsp bonito flakes / katsuobushi
Method:
To Make the Cauliflower:
• Fry the bacon until cooked through and crispy, then set aside to cool. No need to use oil here, as the bacon will release its own oil as you cook it.
• To make the batter, combine the eggs and dashi powder dissolved in the warm water in a small mixing bowl and beat gently. In a separate large mixing bowl add your all purpose flour and cornflour, then pour over with the egg and dashi stock mixture. Stir and combine until smooth.
• Next, add the shredded cabbage, half of the spring onion, cooked bacon and corn into the batter mixture. Mix until all the dry ingredients are evenly coated (but don’t overmix, we want to keep that cabbage nice and fluffy). There shouldn’t be much excess batter liquid at the bottom – if there is, just add a little more chopped cabbage and mix through gently.
• Heat a large frying pan over medium heat. Add in the vegetable oil and allow to heat up. Scoop out the mixture onto the pan, aiming for a circle shape about 10 cm / 4 inches wide. Cook each pancake for a few mins per side, until lightly browned on both sides.
• Transfer your freshly cooked pancakes to serving plates, then top with drizzles of kewpie mayonnaise and okonomiyaki sauce. For even better tasting okonomiyaki, top with sprinklings of dried seaweed flakes, bonito flakes and a few slices of green onion to taste. You can also optionally top with the pickled ginger and Japanese 7 spice here.
Gold Coast mum turns $900 into $110,000
in 90 days in crypto
Sydel Sierra is a crypto multimillionaire these days, working as a crypto coach to help beginners learn how to trade and achieve ‘financial sovereignty’ using the digital money system.
She now lives in a stunning 4.5 hectare Tamborine Mountain retreat and drives an Aston Martin, but it wasn’t always this way for the 35 year old.
“It was 2017, I was in my late 20’s and working a job that barely paid $1000 per week,” she remembers.
“I was hearing a lot about cryptocurrency, just like everyone else, and thought, ‘Well, I’ve got $900 here, why not’, and put it all in a couple of cryptos, one of which was Neo.
“90 days later, it was worth $110,000, and it changed my life forever.
“So many people are sceptical of cryptocurrency, and that’s understandable, but the reality is, it’s seen the best returns of any asset class over the past 10 years –and I’m talking shares, property, and term deposits—so why wouldn’t you want to get in on that?
“I hear stories of everyday people doing it tough, and I just think, You don’t have to. I’m proof of that.
“If you get your head around crypto, and it’s not that hard, you can avoid all that financial stress.
“I teach a very conservative investing approach initially, say $100 per week for a month or so just to get started, till peopl e can see a return – that way the risk is minimal.”
Sierra’s own success is what sparked her passion to help others build significant wealth too.
She has a goal of helping 30,000 people achieve ‘financial sovereignty’ – that is, control of one’s own financial situation –and estimates she’s helped 10,000 so far.
She’s also assisted more than 50 people since 2017 to become ‘Crypto multimillionaires’, which, by definition, is someone with more than $2 million in crypto wealth (even someone with $1.9 million is not considered to be a ‘Crypto multimillionaire’).
“I’ve just become a mum for the first time, and it’s equal parts daunting and exciting,” she smiles.
“So many people are surprised when they see how well I’ve been able to do from cryptocurrency, but honestly, all I want is to help them now – especially other young parents – so they can raise their kids free from the shackles of debt and have the choice of staying home with them with no financial pressure whatsoever.”
Avoiding etiquette faux pas
By Jo Hayes
There are few areas of business that make or break a leader, and etiquette is one of them.
From handshake how-tos, to business dining know-how, awareness of correct protocol, and general good manners, can elevate executive success, from good to great.
Consider this a crash-course in common corporate courtesy.
The handshake
It’s an essential part of business, that sends an immediate first impression.
A good, firm shake, palm to palm (no ‘dead fish’ here, please) accompanied by a warm smile, and direct eye contact, tells the other person you are confident and trustworthy.
But, don’t make the mistake of going too far. Don’t crush the other person’s hand. It’s not about proving who’s the most powerful.
The person of higher authority should make the first move in offering their hand. Men, chivalry dictates allowing the lady to make the first move. Ladies, remember this. Don’t dilly-dally.
The power of the name
Use the others person’s name, and use it frequently.
For example, if you are meeting Amy for the first time, say:
“Amy, lovely to meet you.” It will pack a far more powerful punch than simply, “Lovely to meet you”.
We humans love to hear our own name. It creates an immediate personal connection, and demonstrates attention, recognition and acknowledgement, while creating a culture of respect.
Using the other person’s name, several times, in the first conversation, will also imprint their name in your own memory.
Introductions
Confidence, grace and skill, in introducing oneself, and others, will separate the women from the girls, and the men from the boys, in the business setting.
Stand straight, chin up, warm smile, step forward, firm handshake, “Hello, John Smith”
Do one’s best to make all in the group feel welcome and comfortable.
Introductions differ, depending on setting, but as a general rule: introduce the lower ranked person to the higher ranked person, use names, provide a brief detail of common interest.
For example, a senior executive introducing junior executive, Peter Hill, to the CEO, Bryce Swinburne, could say:
“Mr Swinburne, may I introduce our newest addition to the executive team, Peter Hill. Mr Hill also enjoys the odd game of golf.”
Humility – show deference to the other person
Humans warm to people who demonstrate a genuine interest in them. Ask questions, inquire as to their day, their weekend, their family (but, not too probing – this is business, after all).
As per the name topic, this creates a personal connection, while demonstrating humility – a willingness to talk about the other person, not oneself.
However, a healthy conversation would involve turn-taking. After a question or two, the other person should flip the conversation around, and inquire about oneself.
Dining etiquette
This is an important area of human/ business formation that requires time, effort and attention.
The basics involve using the knife and fork correctly; eating politely, with smallmoderate sized bites; no chewing with mouth open; no talking while chewing; use napkin/serviette correctly (placed on lap).
This applies to all dining settings – from a casual cafe, to Michelin star restaurant.
Of course, knife and fork etiquette differs, slightly, between nations and continents.
Australia follows the UK standard, which stipulates that diners hold the fork in the left hand, knife in the right, and remain in this position throughout the meal. This holds true whether one is left or right handed.
Americans usually cut with the fork in the left hand, then lay knife down, switch fork to right hand, and continue eating.
From boardroom to dining room, etiquette and good manners demonstrate respect and courtesy for oneself and others.
men AND HOMELESSNESS
Homelessness is a complex issue influenced by a myriad of factors, and understanding why men become homeless requires examining both systemic issues and individual circumstances. It’s rarely a matter of choice; rather, it’s often the result of a series of unfortunate events and structural challenges.
ECONOMIC HARDSHIP
One of the primary reasons men find themselves homeless is economic instability. Unemployment, underemployment, and the rising cost of living can make it difficult to afford housing. When men lose their jobs or face significant income reductions without sufficient savings or social safety nets, they may be unable to maintain their living situations. The economic downturns and job market fluctuations disproportionately affect lowwage workers, many of whom are men.
MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE
Mental health issues and substance abuse are significant contributors to homelessness among men. Conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and addiction can impair one’s ability to maintain employment and stable housing. Often, these men lack access to adequate mental health care and support systems, leading them to the streets. According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, a significant portion of the homeless population struggles with mental illness and substance abuse disorders.
FAMILY BREAKDOWN AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Family breakdown and domestic violence also play crucial roles. Men who experience domestic violence or come from dysfunctional families may find themselves without a safe place to stay. In cases of divorce or separation, men may lose their homes and financial stability. Moreover, men may be less likely to seek help or shelters due to societal stigma and the perception that they should be self-reliant.
LACK OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING
The lack of affordable housing is a critical issue. Urban areas, in particular, have seen significant increases in rent and living costs, making it difficult for lowincome individuals to find and maintain housing. Men who lose their jobs or face other financial hardships may quickly fall into homelessness when affordable housing options are unavailable.
INSTITUTIONAL DISCHARGE
The transition from institutions such as prisons, hospitals, or foster care can leave men vulnerable to homelessness. Many lack the support networks and resources needed to reintegrate into society successfully. Upon release, they might not have access to stable housing or employment opportunities, making homelessness a likely outcome.
SOCIAL STIGMA AND POLICY FAILURES
Societal attitudes and policy failures contribute to the persistence of homelessness. The stigma surrounding homelessness can prevent men from seeking help, and there is often inadequate government support to address the root causes of homelessness. Policies may not provide sufficient affordable housing, mental health services, or employment programs to help those in need.
Men become homeless due to a combination of economic hardship, mental health and substance abuse issues, family breakdown, institutional discharge, social stigma, and policy failures. Addressing homelessness requires a comprehensive approach that includes affordable housing, accessible mental health care, employment opportunities, and supportive social services. It’s essential to understand that homelessness is rarely a choice but a consequence of complex and interrelated factors.

The power of mateship (and how to nurture it)
By By Oscar Collins Editor-in-chief at Modded
There’s something transformative about hitting the open road, especially when on a mission. Last summer, I embarked on a cross-country road trip with my old friend Jake, who I’d lost touch with over the years. The trip wasn’t just about discovering the beauty the USA offers — it was my chance to mend a fractured friendship that once meant a lot to me.
Best Friends Through College
When Jake and I first met in college, we were both far from home, having moved to a new state for our studies.
The shared experience of being away from our familiar surroundings and families created an immediate bond.
We both faced the challenges of adapting to a new environment, making us each other’s support system. Latenight study sessions turned into hours of conversation and laughter, and spontaneous outings to explore the city became a regular occurrence. Whether it was grabbing late-night food or tackling tough assignments, these times solidified our friendship.
As we navigated college life together, our friendship grew stronger. We were always there to help each other through complex projects and give relationship advice. We never failed to celebrate each other’s successes or support the inevitable struggles.
Lost Connections
As our four years at college ended, life began to pull us in different directions, and the closeness Jake and I once shared started to wane. After graduation, Jake took a job across the country while I remained in our college town for a few more years. On top of the physical distance, our busy schedules were filled with new responsibilities. Gradually, our frequent texts and social media comments became few and far between, replaced by the occasional message or Instagram like.
Our lives diverged in ways that made it harder to maintain our connection. Jake became engrossed in his new career and personal life while I focused on my own career and navigating adulthood. The ease of our college days gave way to the challenges of maintaining long-distance relationships, and our bond began to feel strained. Our interactions grew more infrequent as years passed, and our distance seemed permanent.
The Road Trip Proposal
During Autumn of last year, I planned a road trip with my dad. However, he became ill and was no longer up for the journey, and I’d already covered all the costs. I took this as a sign to reach out to Jake, and I was surprised when he said yes.
Inviting Jake on a cross-country road trip was the turning point that transformed our fractured friendship. Once we planned our route, I suggested a detour through Stowe, Vermont — a place renowned for its breathtaking fall foliage. Jake agreed, and we set off with a shared sense of anticipation. Camping at every stop on our road trip was crucial in strengthening our friendship. As outdoorsy people, Jake and I thrived in the simplicity of camp life, finding that the shared experience of setting up camp and cooking meals over a fire brought us closer together. The evenings were filled with chatting about nothing and everything, catching each other up on the last few years of adult life, and reminiscing about college professors, football games, wild parties, and ex-girlfriends.
Navigating the Awkwardness of Male Friendships
It’s no secret that male friendships differ greatly from female friendships, as we’re often less likely to open up. A lot had changed in the years we’d been apart. My dad had gotten sick, and Jake had been through a rough breakup. Emotional support was crucial during this time. Navigating the awkwardness of reconnecting with a male friend after years apart can be challenging, especially when the effortlessness of the past seems to have faded. For Jake and me, the initial stage of our road trip was marked by a certain hesitance. We both clearly
felt the weight of our time apart and the uncertainty of whether our friendship would seamlessly pick up where it left off.
The key to overcoming this awkwardness was embracing the simple, unstructured moments our trip offered. Sitting around the campfire or tackling a hiking trail together allowed us to focus on the experience rather than the pressure of rekindling a deep conversation. These activities helped us discover the ease of our old friendship through shared laughter and interests.
Friends Again
Looking back, I realize the road trip was more than just a journey across the country — it was the perfect opportunity to reconnect with my best friend. Sometimes, it takes a grand adventure to remind us of what truly matters in life and to heal the wounds distance and time often create. That cross-country road trip was the best way for Jake and me to rediscover our friendship and strengthen the bond that had once seemed lost. Maybe you’ll find a similar opportunity, and if you do, I suggest you take it.

More than ‘just’ a dad
Gold Coast Father and Adaptive Athlete, Adam Sheppard, has been named as a finalist for Australian Sporting Father of the Year 2024.
His nomination highlights not only his personal triumphs but also his unwavering dedication to his son and the broader sports community.
Adam Sheppard’s journey is a remarkable story of resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment.
Born with Spina Bifida and hydrocephalus, Adam has been a wheelchair user since the age of three. Despite these challenges, he has excelled in various sports, including competitive swimming, wheelchair basketball, and ultimately, wheelchair track and road racing.
His achievements on the track led him to set numerous Australian athletics records and represent his country internationally, earning him the prestigious Australian Sports Medal for Services to Sport.
As a single father and double above-leg amputee, Adam’s dedication to his sevenyear-old son’s athletic pursuits goes beyond typical parental support. He is an active voluntary official and club committee member at Ashmore Little Athletes Club, where he is a constant presence, providing guidance and support. His involvement not only fosters his son’s passion for sports but also creates a sense of community and inclusion within the club.
However, Adam’s impact on the sports community extends beyond his son’s athletic endeavours. His coaching efforts have seen his athlete win the Gold Coast ParaSports Star of the Year 2024 and set Queensland records, and his dedication to promoting accessibility and inclusion in sports is evident through his work with various organisations and initiatives.
His advocacy ensures that individuals of all abilities have the opportunity to participate and excel in sports, breaking down barriers and creating a more inclusive environment.
Despite the challenges, Adam has embraced new athletic pursuits, including powerlifting, where his dedication quickly led to success. His story of competing in ultra trail runs, learning to indoor skydive, and excelling in para powerlifting serves as an inspiration not only to his son but to athletes and parents alike.
Adam’s life is a powerful testament to the impact of perseverance, adaptability, and a positive mindset, and as a finalist for the Australian Sporting Father of the Year 2024, he embodies the qualities of an exemplary sports father.
