The Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) has provided safety, veterinary care and loving homes to over 175,000 stray and homeless animals for over 65 years.
But we receive no government funding for our welfare work and rely on your kind support to continue saving thousands of animals in need.
At a time when we are facing unprecedented numbers of animals coming into our care, we need to raise over $200,000 by June 30th. Caring for one animal typically costs around $750, while other emergency cases can cost thousands.
If you can, please donate this tax time.
Your support saves their lives.
Please donate to AWLQ by June 30. Every gift over $2 is tax deductible.

Letter from Nicole
— Editor —
Well we’ve arrived at the middle of the year. It’s difficult to believe, but here we are.
It seems as time goes on, the quicker time goes, and this year I’m feeling it more than ever.
It’s so easy to get caught up in the trenches of parenting, of partnering, of just doing life, that you forget who you are.
You forget to breathe; to laugh; to have fun.
To live in the moment.
So this month, I want to share a piece of prose, written by poet and author, Donna Ashworth, and sent to me by my beautiful mum, as a well-timed reminder.
“To the woman who has lost her spark. To the woman whose get up and go, has well and truly gone. This is for you. This is to remind you that you don’t have to be everything to everyone every day.
You didn’t sign up for that.
Remember when you used to laugh? Sing?
Throw caution to the wind?
Remember when you used to forgive yourself more quickly for not always being perfect.
You can get that back again.
You really can.
And that doesn’t have to mean letting people down or walking away.
It just means being kinder to you, feeling brave enough to say no sometimes. Brave enough to stop sometimes. And rest.
It starts the moment you realise that you’re not quite who you used to be.
Some of that is good, some of that is not. There are parts of you that need to be brought back.
And if anyone in your life is not okay with that… they are not your people. Your people will be glad to see that spark starting to light up again.
So if you have been slowly fading away my friend, this is the time to start saying yes to things that bring you joy, and no to things that don’t.
It’s really pretty simple.”
Until next month xxx
Nicole Madigan

The Power of Saving Time and Money
— by Dee Hardy — Shifting Tides Counselling
In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the demands of work, family, and personal commitments. But what if I told you that by saving time and money, you could unlock a sense of achievement and create structure and discipline in your life, ultimately leading to improved mental health and wellbeing?
Save Time, Save Money: Tips and Hacks
Streamline Your Routine: Identify time-consuming tasks and find ways to streamline them. Whether it's meal prep on Sundays or using productivity apps to manage your schedule, small changes can lead to big time savings.
Smart Spending: Take control of your finances by creating a budget and sticking to it. Look for opportunities to save money, such as using coupons or buying in bulk. Being mindful of your spending habits not only saves money but also instills a sense of financial empowerment.
Organisation is key. Implementing organisational systems in your home and workspace can save both time and money. From decluttering your closet to creating a filing system for important documents, an organised environment promotes efficiency and reduces stress.
The Impact on Mental Health and Wellbeing
Sense of Achievement: Accomplishing tasks, no matter how small, boosts your confidence and sense of achievement. By actively saving time and money, you're taking control of your life and achieving your goals, which can have a positive impact on your overall wellbeing.
Structure and Discipline: Creating routines and sticking to them fosters a sense of structure and discipline in your life. This not only helps you accomplish more but also provides stability and reduces feelings of chaos or overwhelm.
Proactive Self-Care: Prioritising time and money-saving strategies is a form of self-care. By being proactive in managing your resources, you're investing in your own wellbeing and setting yourself up for success in all areas of your life.
To summarise, saving time and money isn't just about financial freedom—it's about unlocking a sense of achievement, creating structure and discipline, and prioritising your mental health and wellbeing. So, embrace these everyday life steps with enthusiasm and watch as they transform not only your external circumstances but also your inner sense of fulfilment and joy.

Cleaning hacks to make big jobs feel smaller
House cleaning is always a chore, however there’s some cleaning tasks that seem insurmountable. Cleaning the driveway, removing rust stains from a BBQ, cleaning glass in the shower, around pools or on a balcony, and cleaning your dishwasher or washing machine, are just some of the more tedious cleaning jobs which are regularly put-off.
Home improvement specialist, Chelsea Smith believes in simplifying cleaning tasks to make them as effortless as possible for everyone.
“Keeping chores at home quick, easy and effective is key,” says Smith. “By embracing this approach, you're more inclined to
tackle tasks frequently, preventing debris build-up and ensuring your home stays clean amidst life's busyness. Let's face it, life can easily take over, but with a commitment to simplicity in cleaning, you can stay on top of things and enjoy a cleaner, more organised living space effortlessly.”
HERE, SMITH SHARES HER TOP TIPS FOR KEEPING THINGS SIMPLE.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Keep Supplies Accessible: Ensure cleaning products are readily available in the rooms where they'll be used. This accessibility makes it convenient to grab the right cleaning solution when needed, streamlining the cleaning process and saving time.
Time Limits: Implement time limits to prevent feeling overwhelmed by cleaning tasks. For example, introduce a “10-minute evening reset” where the family dedicates a short but focused period to tidying up after the day. By working together for just 10 minutes, tasks can be completed efficiently without feeling daunting.
Delegate Specific Tasks: Assign specific cleaning tasks to each family member based on their strengths and interests. By distributing responsibilities, everyone can contribute to maintaining a clean home while also feeling a sense of ownership over their assigned tasks.
Choose Your Cleaning Times: Selecting specific times for cleaning routines helps ensure consistency and efficiency. Whether it's after meal times or designated morning and evening sessions, having a set plan for cleaning tasks allows you to stay organised and focused.
Wipe Down Surfaces Daily: Take the time to wipe-down flat surfaces daily. Incorporating a daily wipe down routine using CLR Calcium, Limescale and Rust Remover can make a significant difference. Simply spraying surfaces like sinks, dishwashers, baths, and shower screens with CLR, you can effortlessly remove dirt, dust, debris and soap scum, ensuring a sparkling clean home every day.
Get the Family Involved: Sharing the mental load of cleaning by involving all members of the household is key. Assigning specific routines to each family member based on their age and ability fosters a sense of teamwork and responsibility.
Clean As You Go: Adopting a “clean as you go” mentality is a simple yet effective strategy for maintaining a tidy clean home. Instead of letting messes accumulate, make it a habit to address them promptly.
Declutter Regularly: Decluttering is a fundamental aspect of keeping a clean home. Schedule regular decluttering sessions to go through your belongings and eliminate anything that you no longer need or use. Donating items in good condition and discarding broken or damaged items helps reduce clutter, making cleaning more manageable.

DIY These Top Autumn Reno Trends
WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK
In line with the changing of seasons, homeowners are also looking to change up their living space. The colder weather can make our once bright and summery décor feel dull, but overhauling your furniture and accessories can cost a pretty penny. Instead, look to the four walls inside your home as inspiration for the upgrades you’re craving.
Tahlia Williams, a multi-award-winning painter and decorator and leading provider of top-notch painting and decorating services, has named 4 up-and-coming home trends for your walls, and a few top tips for DIYers to replicate them at home on a budget.
ADD TEXTURE WITH WALLPAPER.
Wallpaper is trending more in 2024 than ever. There is an increase in the creative and unconventional ways people are using wallpaper, where it’s being used in wall panelling as well as lining the back of joinery. Even used conventionally, wallpaper is an easy and effective way to add personality to any room.
Find budget-friendly wallpaper and use a paint roller to apply the adhesive to the wall.
CREATE A TIMELESS VENETIAN PLASTER AESTHETIC.
This 15th century technique has made a massive comeback. Venetian plaster is a mix of lime and marble powder which leaves you with an incredible designer finish look. Venetian plaster has multi-tonal depth, so it reflects light in beautiful ways. It comes in several different styles to suit any space and taste.
Use a paint scraper to apply venetian plaster at home and don’t forget to put down a drop cloth because this one can get messy.
Be sure to prep and prime the wall, remembering less is more when going in with your venetian plaster of choice. Now create your masterpiece!
INCORPORATE WOOD PANELLING IN A NEW WAY.
Wood panelling also makes a comeback, not just as flooring. We are seeing panelling used to highlight specific areas, such as dining areas or hallways, appearing as a feature of the room or space.
MODERNISE DATED BRICKS WITH WHITEWASHING.
If you’re looking to upgrade the look of a brick fireplace, or completely change an outdated brick exterior, you may be considering whitewashing. Whitewashing has evolved, finding its way into modern interior and exterior design, especially with the resurgence of colonial and farmhouse styles. Whitewashing is a creative way to add pops of colour to brick, without splashing too much cash.
So, go and have some fun!

Transform your space with texture and shape
Styling tips on how to choose the right plants and pots
Entering a new season often prompts a desire to refresh our living spaces and infuse them with renewed vitality and charm. And what better way to achieve this than by incorporating nature's touch through plants? Plants effortlessly bridge the gap between the indoors and outdoors, bringing a sense of life and serenity into our homes.
Here are some styling tips to help you transform your space with texture and shape.
Regardless of whether your style leans towards modern minimalism, a coastal oasis, or a rustic farmhouse, there are pots and plants to complement every look. From sleek and contemporary to earthy and organic, the options are endless.
When arranging multiple pots together, it's essential to vary their sizes and shapes. A cluster of three pots, for example, not only draws the eye but also invites exploration. To create a cohesive arrangement, start by anchoring it with the largest pot and layering smaller, complementary pieces around it.
In addition to aesthetics, functionality is also key when choosing plant pots. Lightweight pots are durable yet easy to move, making them ideal for city dwellers or renters who like to change
up their decor frequently. Capi Europe's Rib Outdoor Pots are a prime example of lightweight pots that combine style and functionality seamlessly.
For those with limited space, styling with pairs of pot plants can be just as impactful as larger arrangements. By maintaining consistency in colour styling palette and plant selection, you can create a harmonious display that maximises visual appeal. Consider incorporating a tall statement plant in the largest pot to add vertical interest and balance to the arrangement.
When it comes to choosing plants, opt for varieties that not only complement each other visually but also have similar sun and light exposure needs. This simplifies maintenance and ensures that your plants thrive in their new environment. Experiment with different textures by pairing spiky plants with softer ones or structural plants with more fluid varieties.
Incorporating decorative pots into your home not only adds texture and colour but also brings life to your living spaces. Whether you prefer a cohesive look or an eclectic mix of styles, there are endless possibilities to explore. Self-watering pots are a convenient option. With built-in watering systems, these pots provide plants with the moisture they need while reducing the need for frequent watering. Additionally, consider investing in UV-treated plastic pots to ensure durability and longevity, especially in harsh sunlight conditions.
Ultimately, styling with plants and pots is an opportunity to infuse your home with personality and charm. By carefully selecting pots that complement your design aesthetic and choosing plants that thrive in your environment, you can create stunning displays that breathe new life into your living spaces. So go ahead, unleash your creativity, and transform your space with texture and shape.

These are the people who sacrifice their lives to care for others
get to knowTHE CARERS FOUNDATION
Over 15 years ago, The Carers Foundation Australia was brought to life by the unwavering dedication of Ronnie and Michael Benbow, on a mission to support unpaid family carers.
The ethos of The Carers Foundation centres on preventing caregiver burnout, offering lifelines to those teetering on the edge of exhaustion.
Today, the Foundation continues to attract passionate supporters, including Gold Coast locals Stefanie Fontana and Victor Doree, owners of Kingsford Law, who are fundraising for the Foundation’s upcoming Unsung Heroes 2024 event.
We spoke to Stefanie and Victor to learn more about what this charity means to them and how we can all bring awareness and support to such a vital community.

How
did you first
connect with The Carers Foundation and Unsung Heroes?
I met Ronnie at a community luncheon that supports charities, and she asked me if I would be interested in participating in the Unsung Heroes Event, which aims to make a difference in the lives of those who tirelessly care for others.
The lack of government funding for The Carers Foundation Australia is a problem that they are striving to address, and we believe that the Unsung Heroes event is a fantastic and creative step in bringing awareness to this issue and providing much-needed financial support for the foundation. It was only a matter of time until I roped my husband Victor in to take the stage with me and go on this journey together.
3
What is your fundraising goal, and how can our readers support it?
2
What does it mean to you to be able to support carers?
This journey means a lot to the both of us. We are sure that everyone has been a carer to someone in their lives at some point. Be it a friend or a family member, some people even open their arms to strangers just to help. We have both cared for loved ones during times of need, which is why we are deeply committed to the cause of supporting unpaid carers, as these are people who sacrifice their own lives and resources to care for their loved ones.
One of the many reasons they want to take part in Unsung Heroes is that we see firsthand the struggles and sacrifices that carers make in caring for their loved ones. As lawyers with an extensive background in Insolvency and Family Law, we understand and appreciate the toll that caregiving can take on individuals and families financially, mentally, and physically.
We have a goal of $20,000 for our campaign for Unsung Heroes, and we’re not far off! We have also been organising other charity galas and luncheons to help fundraise further. For those looking to support us, you can contribute to our Unsung Heroes campaign and of course, get tickets to the 2024 Gala to see it all come together.
Join in the fun and secure your tickets for Unsung Heroes 2024 on Saturday 5th of October and Fundraise through song
Unsung Heroes is hitting the stage again at the Fortitude Music Hall for an encore you won’t want to miss. Following the resounding success of the inaugural gala, a brand-new lineup of Singing Heroes will take to the stage to fundraise for The Carers Foundation.

Slay the Money Monster: Budgeting Bliss for Busy Bosses
STEP 1: TRACK THOSE DRAGONS! The first step is to see where your money's actually going. Every coffee run, every office supply splurge – log it. Most banks have handy transaction tools or use an app (like Xero).
We all know the struggle –juggling family, running a business, and keeping that bank account singing. But sometimes, between the hustle and the heart emojis, finances can get a little... blurry. Let's face it, who wants to spend hours buried in spreadsheets when there are emails to crush and world domination plans to finalise?
Before you reach for another latte, here's the secret to financial freedom: knowing your numbers. Don't panic.
Think of it like slaying the budget monster – a fierce, fluffy beast that gobbles up unexpected expenses. To slay it, you need a weapon –a monthly budget. Here's how to craft one that's both effective and, dare we say, kinda fun
STEP 2: FACE THE BEAST: Once you've got a month's worth of data, it's time to create your budget. Think of it as your roadmap to financial victory. Separate your business expenses from your personal ones (no tax nightmares). List your income & essential expenses. Now, see where you can slay some spending dragons – maybe it's that daily juice, or the subscription addiction. Remember, it's not about deprivation – it's about consciously allocating funds for the things that truly matter.
STEP 3: GET YOUR SQUAD INVOLVED: Don't be afraid to call in reinforcements! Utilise your team – do they see any unnecessary spending areas? Consider consulting a financial pro like an account or a business consultant.
STEP 4: SLAY STRATEGICALLY: Here's the key to keeping on track – regularly compare your actual spending to your budget. Use that budgeting tool to track progress. Feeling like a budgeting boss? Celebrate with a (budgeted) treat! If you notice areas where you're consistently overspending, don't despair. Adjust your budget and attack it again!
BONUS TIP: GST AND PAYG –YOUR LOYAL STEEDS: Don't forget these crucial tax payments! Set aside a portion of your income weekly to cover these. It's a small but crucial step to avoid a future headaches. Remember, a clean record is key when applying for loans – essential for business growth!
PRO TIP: KEEP IT SEPARATED: Mixing personal and business expenses is a no-no. It blurs your finances and hinders your business's value. Treat your business like the independent queen it is – separate bank accounts are your friend!
THE TAKEAWAY: KNOWLEDGE IS POWER (AND PROFIT!) By understanding your finances, you gain the power to control them. Don't be afraid to ask for help!
By refining your budgeting systems, streamlining your operations, and ultimately increasing your profits, you will free up your time for the things you love. Let's slay that budget monster and watch your business take flight!
Are you ready to unleash your financial power? Reach out to Limitless Aspirations and let's make your money work for you!

How to move past the anxiety
Been burned by a past relationship? Chances are you’ll experience relationship anxiety in new relationships.
According to author and relationship coach, Elizabeth Jane, relationship anxiety is an increasingly common problem and one which can be difficult to overcome, however there are things people can do to help themselves manage this issue.
“Many people walk away from relationships feeling hurt and broken. Sadly, this is very common. This pain and trauma can travel with you into new relationships,” says Jane.
“Relationship anxiety can manifest in various ways, including fear of abandonment, insecurity, jealousy and constant worrying about the relationship’s future.
“Overcoming relationship anxiety often involves a combination of self-reflection, communication with your partner and adopting healthy coping strategies.”
Here, Jane shares some tools and tips to help people overcome relationship anxiety and empower their relationships.
IDENTIFY TRIGGERS
“Journal your feelings. This can help you to identify triggers and patterns, which in turn will help you to understand what may be activating your anxiety,” she says.
“Reflect on what specific situations or thoughts trigger your anxiety in the relationship. Identifying and understanding your triggers can help you address them more effectively.”
CHALLENGE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS
“Ask yourself if there is evidence to support these thoughts and consider more balanced and realistic perspectives,” Jane says.
“Surround yourself with positive and supportive friends who are able to help you gain a balanced understanding of the situation.”
PRIORITISE SELF-CARE
“Take care of your physical, emotional and mental well-being by engaging in activities that nourish and rejuvenate you. Prioritise self-care practices such as exercise, meditation, hobbies and spending time with supportive friends and family members,” Jane said.
SET BOUNDARIES
Establish clear boundaries in your relationship to ensure that both you and your partner feel respected and valued. Boundaries help alleviate anxiety by providing a sense of predictability and stability where both parties feel safe,” Jane says.
COMMUNICATE YOUR FEELINGS
“Talk to your partner about your feelings and concerns in a calm and non-confrontational manner,” Jane says.
“Sharing your fears and anxieties with them with open, authentic communication and understanding from both sides, builds the intimacy of the relationship.”
ADDRESS UNDERLYING ISSUES
“Explore any underlying issues or past experiences that may be contributing to your relationship anxiety. Consider seeking therapy or counseling to work through these issues and develop healthier coping mechanisms.”
PRACTICE SELF-COMPASSION
“Be kind to yourself and recognise that it’s normal to experience doubts and insecurities in relationships. Practise self-compassion by treating yourself with understanding and acceptance,” Jane says.
FOCUS ON THE PRESENT
“Instead of worrying about the future or dwelling on past experiences, focus on the present moment in your relationship. Practise mindfulness techniques to stay grounded and fully engage with your partner.”
TALK WITH SOMEONE
“Consider seeking help from a therapist or counselor who specialises in relationship issues. Therapy can provide you with additional support, guidance and tools to overcome anxiety and improve your relationship,” Jane said.
PRACTISE PATIENCE
“Overcoming relationship anxiety is a process that takes time and effort. Be patient with yourself and your partner as you work together to build trust, communication and mutual understanding,” Jane said.
Jane emphasises that overcoming relationship anxiety is a journey and progress may come gradually. Don’t forget to acknowledge and reward yourself for this progress. “As you take proactive steps to address your anxiety and strengthen the relationship that you have with yourself, greater trust, security and fulfillment can be cultivated in your romantic partnership.”

WarmersWinter
With the cooler weather settled in, we’re all about the winter warmers. When it comes to comfort food, you can’t go past tender lamb, homely potatoes, sizzling soups and warmed up salads.
Maple Lamb Shanks with Giant Couscous
Ingredients:
• 4 lamb shanks
• 3 tbsp olive oil
• 1 brown onion, chopped
• 1 tin of chopped tomatoes
• 4 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
• 1 tsp ground coriander
• 1 tsp ground cumin
• 1 tsp paprika
• 1 tsp ground cinnamon
• 2 cups chicken stock
• 1 1/2 cups giant couscous
• 3 tbsp pure maple syrup (preferably amber syrup for its rich taste)
• 4 tomatoes, quartered
• 2 capsicums, cut into large pieces
Method:
1. Mix the coriander, cumin, paprika and cinnamon in a bowl.
2. Separately, put the olive oil into a casserole dish on a medium heat.
3. When the oil is hot, add the spice mix and fry for 1 – 2 minutes.
4. Add the lamb shanks to the pan, making sure the shanks are coated with the spices while browning the meat.
5. After the lamb shanks are nice and brown, add the tin of tomatoes, onion and garlic and cook for 2 – 3 minutes.
6. Add the chicken stock to the pan, making sure the lamb shanks are largely covered, and bring it to a boil.
7. Add the salt and pure maple syrup to the pot, cover the pan with the lid and reduce the heat to let it simmer for 30 minutes.
8. After 30 minutes, adjust the seasoning to your preference.
9. Let the lamb continue to cook for another 2 1/2 hours, turning the lamb shanks over every 30 minutes.
10. Then, add the peppers and fresh tomatoes to the lamb and continue to cook for another 30 minutes. The meat should be almost falling off the bones.
11. Meanwhile, put the couscous in a large bowl and cover with the sauce from the lamb. The liquid should cover the couscous.
12. Cover the bowl with the lid from the pot for about 15 minutes. This will allow the couscous to soak up all the flavours.
13. Uncover the bowl and fluff the couscous up with a fork.
14. Put the couscous onto a big platter and dish out the lamb shanks and the vegetables on top of the couscous.
15. Pour any remaining sauce over the dish.

COLLABORATION MAKES IT HAPPEN
By Australian Christian College Moreton teacher, Jason Todio
Healthy school lunches are more than just a midday meal; they are a crucial element in shaping a child's physical health, academic performance, and lifelong eating habits. Research shows a vital connection between a nutritious midday meal and enduring healthy eating patterns in and out of school. Children partaking in well-rounded school lunches exhibit a ripple effect of positive choices, transcending the lunch hour.
This not only supports their immediate well-being but also lays the foundation for lifelong healthy habits.
As parents and educators, recognising these findings propels us into a multifaceted exploration of the pivotal role that healthy school lunches play in our children's lives, unravelling insights and guidance for thoughtful and nutritious choices.
Understanding Nutritional Needs for School-Aged Children
Nutrition plays a pivotal role in the physical and cognitive development of school-aged children. Essential nutrients like proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals each play unique roles in supporting growth, energy levels, brain function, and overall health. Adhering to dietary guidelines and understanding the nutritional requirements specific to different age groups is fundamental in planning healthy school lunches.
The Impact of Unhealthy School Lunches on Students
Sugar Highs and Crashes
Unhealthy school lunches, high in sugar, trigger energy spikes followed by crashes, impacting students' ability to stay focused and engaged in class.
Cognitive Function
Poor nutrition hampers cognitive development, affecting memory, problem-solving skills, and overall brain function in students.
Academic Performance and Behaviour
Inadequate diets are linked to lower academic achievements and behavioural issues, hindering students' ability to learn and engage positively in the classroom.
Decreased Concentration
Sugary, processed foods contribute to decreased concentration levels, impairing students' focus, information retention, and task completion.
Mood and Social Interactions
Unhealthy lunches influence mood swings and irritability, impacting students' social interactions and hindering the development of positive relationships in school.
Parents vs. Student Involvement
There's nothing worse than discovering a half-eaten sandwich and bruised fruit in your kid's lunchbox. But, I've come to realise that letting our kids dictate their own lunches is far from striking a healthy balance. As parents, it's our responsibility to care for and protect our children, even from their own food choices. Involving them in weekly lunch planning, however, has been a game-changer.
Collaborative School Lunch Planning
Go through the week's menu together. By embracing the convenience of online grocery shopping, they even get to watch what you do and add each item to the virtual cart.
Instead of simply saying “no” to their requests for chocolate bars during recess, make it a collaborative discussion. You could ask, “What could be a healthier alternative to chocolate that you would enjoy? How about trying this muesli bar?”
In the end, this collaborative approach not only ensures that my children are making healthier choices, but it also gives them a sense of ownership over their meals. No more disappointing surprises in their lunchboxes – just a balanced and satisfying array of foods that we've all agreed upon.

The (important) rise of the
hybrid-writer
Despite children growing up in the digital age, new research shows learning handwriting is as important as ever.
“Skilful writing is a powerful means of communication, and a key goal in educational contexts worldwide. Written words have shaped our cultures, defining our actions and thoughts as human beings,” says School of Education Senior Lecturer, Dr Anabela Malpique, from Edith Cowan University (ECU).
Dr Malpique and colleagues conducted a meta-analysis to examine studies published between 2000-2022, comparing the effects of writing by hand or keyboarding on primary students’ writing performance.
“It's often presumed that children are digital natives because they have grown up with different technologies around them – so they will be naturally able to write texts using digital devices,” Dr Malpique said.
But the research findings showed that primary students produce higher quality writings using paper and pen(cil) than when using a keyboard.
In a recent large-scale project examining the writing performance of Year 2 children in WA, it was also found that children wrote longer and higher-quality handwritten texts.
“One thing we do know is the importance of transcription skills. Transcription skills refer to spelling and how quickly and accurately children can handwrite or type, also called automaticity,” Dr Malpique added.
“Our research has consistently shown that young children’s spelling and capacity to automatise handwriting and typing predicts the quality and the length of their texts. Simply put, children can better focus on what they want to say when handwriting or typing becomes automatised.
“Writing resembles other complex skills, such as driving a car. Unless we automatise the management of gears, pedals, blinkers, and wipers (transcription skills) we cannot select the most efficient or the most scenic route (creating texts).”
Dr Malpique said teaching how to write letters is connected to children’s spelling and capacity to develop automaticity in writing texts by hand. Similarly, keyboarding needs to be taught.
“Keyboarding, much like handwriting involves a complex set of cognitive, visual and motor processes, requiring frequent practice and instruction.
“It involves learning the location of the keys on a keyboard, combined with spatial skills of positioning, and moving fingers to press the keys in the correct sequence. Students need time to practice so they can move beyond the “hunt and peck” motion, which is typical of novice keyboarders,” Dr Malpique said.
A growing number of generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems are starting to revolutionise the way people communicate using written words.
This digital shift is likely to impact writing acquisition and development. So, researchers are stressing the urgency of preparing beginning writers to become ‘hybrid writers’, able to produce paper and computer-generated texts with a similar level of proficiency.
