Winter is about to get hot, hot, hot! Links is proud to announce our Fire & Ice Ball! 7 DAY Join us for a hedonistic evening, M I D W E Efilled K It seems to be a time of reflection, re-organising and CO R P O R AT E planning. In a tough economy the strong survive and thrive with untamed entertainment, T W I L IaG moody HT and I see this regularly with my friends and our wonderful clients who support us every month. Only through looking at ambience and exotic M E Mmenu. bERsHIPs the past can you plan the future. Ah yes, the end of the financial year, it’s an exciting time. What does this mean for most of us? Well, it can be a time where the Get it girls work out how much GST we can claim on wine from Uncle Dan’s, or simply realise this kind of account is not tax deductible.
But if you’re doing more surviving and less thriving these days, get out from underneath the covers, put a smile on your dial and poke the world in the eye because everything will be okay. This isn’t a time to feel sorry for yourself, it’s a time to realise what’s not working and to start doing what will work. And remember girls, red lipstick can do wonders no matter which side of the bed you get out of. I love the saying “Fake it till you make it”… it’s something so many of us do. But once we do make it we ask ourselves “Who cares?” because truth be told, not many do. Faking it till you make it can be a good strategy, but that doesn’t mean you should be ‘fake’ just be yourself. Be the one with your hair not quite coiffed, the shoes not quite polished… (I know this one all too well, recently I was grabbing a black pair of patent leather shoes that hadn’t been worn since the dark ages and looked down to realise there was enough dust on them to resemble Pompeii, fortunately I was wearing pants and did the swipe/swipe thing on the legs and it all went away)— faked it and made it!

The Office Romance Survival Guide Before you strike up that flirtatious conversation with a co-worker, read Anna Davies’ helpful guide

orrect me if I am wrong, but I think Shakespeare first coined the phrase “Thou shalt not sh**eth where thou eats”. It’s the unofficial 11th commandment that’s meant to prevent people from getting frisky in the stationary cupboard — but does ‘getting down to business’ with a co-worker stop you from... well... actually getting down to business? I have been lucky enough to only work with fellow females, so my experience on this matter is limited. However, I have sat on the sideline while my friends tread down this dangerous road, and, as any woman knows, listening to your friend’s problems pretty much makes you a poor man’s Dr. Phil. So please, listen to my advice. DEFINE THE RELATIONSHIP Please, for the love of God, be honest with yourself and each other about where you see this relationship going. This advice goes for every relationship, but especially a workplace romance. The only thing worse than unrequited love is having to hang around the source of your heart ache 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
IF THINGS GO WELL, GET ANOTHER JOB I know what you’re thinking... shouldn’t I get another job if things don’t go well? The truth is, if you are going to delve into an office romance you need to be prepared to move jobs. Don’t believe me? Here’s two likely scenarios: a) You break up. You try to stay strong, but one day he comes in with a rebound hickey on his neck. You spend your lunch break crying in the loo. It’s awkward, and yes, everyone knows. b) You stay together and want to take things to the next level by setting up a love nest. Congratulations! You now get to spend every waking minute of the day with your new love. Every. Waking. Minute. Time to update your LinkedIn Profile. DON’T FALL FOR THE OFFICE FLIRT The office flirt. You know the one. Move over Mick Jagger... Don from Accounts has just walked into the room wearing a pair of fitted chinos from Connor. Swoon. While there is nothing wrong with a bit of flirty banter, going any further than the occasional wink is not a good idea. You know what they say, once a flirt, always a flirt. They’ll go from pashing you in the lunchroom to leaning up against the new girl’s desk before you’ve even had the chance to heat up last night’s lasagne. Typical. 9

GET IT I BUSINESS
The 12 people
holding you back
from success
Take control and cut out the people from your network that are holding you back with Janine Garner 1. The Saboteur sets out to damage your success deliberately and usually for personal gain. Sometimes they may take your idea and run with it. They enjoy asking lots of questions, spending one-on-one time with you so they can pick your brain, and likely use that knowledge for their own end game. 2. The Back-stabber is someone you usually think of as a friend — until they stab you in the back. It happens. Colleagues and clients have shared their disappointment, hurt and frustration after someone copied their jewellery designs, marketing idea or even blog posts that were sold to a media outlet as their own. 3. The Dream Stealer sucks up all your positivity and self-belief. They can be friends, colleagues, even family members, who genuinely seem to want to protect you.You may think they have your best interests at heart, but subtly they’ll fill your mind with doubts about your dreams and ambitions. 4. The Traitor says one thing but does something else — usually something that comes at a cost to you because they view the world only as a competition.‘This is my dance space — and if you step on my toes, I will step back. Harder.’ Disloyalty like this undermines your self-esteem and confidence. 5. The Narcissist is interested in one thing only: maintaining their own power. They have an exaggerated sense of self-importance, take more than they give and believe they have the solution to everything. They do not like to be challenged on this. They lack empathy, guilt or remorse. Everything they say or do centres on what they want and need, boosts their own ego and implies others are inferior. 6. The Energy Vampire, aka Negative Neville or Debbie Downer, has nothing positive to say, ever. They constantly blame others and make excuses for their situation instead of taking ownership of their own behaviours and actions. Spending time with this person zaps your purpose and passion, drains you of momentum and leaves you feeling down in the dumps and grey with the world. July 2017
7. The Sceptic wants to bring you down (likely with them) before you achieve too much. They believe your ideas have no merit, feed off your inner fears, and wreak havoc on your anxiety and stress levels. They are there on the sidelines watching and waiting, and they love it when they can say I told you so. 8. The Labeller puts you in a box with a neat little name on it and sets your limitations: ‘You've never worked in this area before’;‘You’re a busy mother — you can’t possibly do [XYZ].’
Their toxic personalities and mean-spirited activities can increase your stress, raise your blood pressure and affect your performance
And they will only support and appreciate you if you fit into this box or the label they have created for you; anything else and you’ll be ‘disappointing’ them. 9. The Villain is malicious in intent, motivated by power, greed and jealousy. They appear to set up conflict, obstacles and challenges for you and the people you hang out with. Their toxic personalities and mean-spirited activities can increase your stress, raise your blood pressure 10
and affect your performance. They make it difficult for you to get work done. 10. The Bully fights you from all angles, breaking down your spirit until you feel like you have no hope left. Often they appear in the guise of a friendly competitor, until they start intimidating and even humiliating you. They can make you feel submissive, small and without a voice. They exclude you from conversations, meetings or events. They may even become abusive (verbally or physically). 11. The Liar deliberately holds back important information. Maybe they offer to help with your project, but never deliver. Or suggest an introduction to someone who could help you land a new job, only you’re never connected. They may even put you forward for a role or a job, or so you think, but then nothing ever eventuates, no matter how much you follow up. 12. The Critic shuts down your goals, plans, ideas, thoughts and actions before they’ve even begun. They criticise your plans, fill your head with negative nonsense and opinions that lack evidence or substance. They have strong ideas about what success means, how to live life, do business or build a career, and they’re not interested if you don’t think or feel the same way. Be brave and reassess the negative people in your network. Choose to play your own game the way you want. Choose to live the life you want. Choose to take control of your own energy, mindset and momentum. Choose to make your network work for you.

GET IT I GENERAL STORY
How to have
'thein 2017 talk'
What was your name again?
With things like ‘sexting’, ‘nudes’ and 50 Shades of Grey so prevalent today, Get it’s Kirstin Cuthbert investigates what the younger generation needs to know
he talk used to go like this… When a Mummy meets a Daddy and they are in love they share a special hug and a baby comes along. Nowadays it’s more like when Sally got a message from Tim on a dating site she went over to his house for a night of casual ‘hugs’ with no love and no further contact after the night… WHY THE TALK HAS CHANGED Sexpert and author of For Foxes’ Sake Row Murray believes there is an absolutely huge gap in the sex education programs in schools as a result of the online world. “It’s great to have all the biology and the safe sex conversation, but I really feel sex ed today is lacking in love, relationships, peer pressure, consent and common sense,” Row says. “There’s never been a generation that’s experienced what teenagers are going through right now and they are forced to become responsible earlier. A lot of parental choice in the conversation is taken away now because kids can hop on their phones and find out anything in five minutes.” Having ‘the talk’ with children is something most parents feel a little uneasy about but it’s never been more crucial. Children are being exposed to sex at a younger age not only from social media but also online porn explains Row. “It’s estimated that 30-40% of all online traffic today is online porn and that’s free porn,” Row says. “Some research is saying that young people from the ages of eight and nine are seeing porn for the first time, and by the time they’re 12 and 13 the majority have viewed hard-core porn.” A Plymouth University study surveyed 1000 young people, with some saying July 2017
they first watched pornography aged 11 or 12. The research also found that a third of people aged 16 to 24 found sex with partners difficult because of what they had seen online. We’ll get into more of that later in the article. WHEN TO START THE DISCUSSION Age-appropriate discussions need to happen from kindergarten level according to Row. “Kids do need to know correct terminology for their genitals and body autonomy, as a lack of body awareness and autonomy contributes to child sex abuse being hidden away and kept as a secret,” says Row. Dr Donna Burgess who practices at the Gold Coast Women’s Health in Broadbeach also believes when having the talk, the younger the better. “If parents can start the discussion in primary school that’s really important. Parents need to keep it very black and white as that’s how kids accept things,” Dr Burgess. “Once they get into high school it all gets a bit awkward, a bit embarrassing, as puberty has already well and truly started. Most kids are starting puberty at about 10 so you really want to have that conversation 12
I've got something to show you
before puberty, so eight or nine years old.” For any parents concerned that talking to their children about these things at a young age may have a negative effect, Dr Burgess assures that’s not the case. “Informing children young does not promote being promiscuous in anyway, it’s just opening their eyes to normal things and it helps prevent them from getting the abnormal information in the playground.” Row also says when it comes to things like porn and sex, the much more gnarly
carpet,” Row says. Porn also doesn’t show the safety measures and the preparation that goes into sex, in all the different forms, Row says. “Condoms are often not used in porn and teenagers need to know that they have to roll one on every time,” she says. Row also says they need to know that just because they see it online or read it in books, like 50 Shades of Grey, doesn’t mean that’s expected of them. “All the erotica, movies and online porn is dressed up as a bit of a smorgasbord and implies this is to be expected,” Row says. “If they are taught to have the confidence to respect themselves and then understand the consent and the boundaries of other people around them from a young age, they’re going to be a lot better off.”
Doesn't matter, let's do this!
conversations, they really should be happening from 10, 11 and 12. “Kids are watching porn from a young age so if parents are waiting until 14 or 15 to start talking to them, they’ve missed the boat by years,” Row says. PORNOGRAPHY While it most likely wasn’t part of the discussion your parents had with you, pornography is definitely something that needs to be talked about. “There are a lot of people in denial that their children look at this material and there’s a lot of unwillingness to accept it,” Row says. “A lot of parents have put structures in place, they might have rules that mobile phones are switched off at 9pm or that they don’t go in the bedrooms, but the majority of online sex material is actually viewed outside of the family home and it’s on mobile devices.” Row says it’s also important to explain the difference between online porn and actual sex. “Make it clear that it’s highly stylised and it’s often very polished body types. Explain to them that it’s the same difference as slopping around the house in your tracksuit pants versus walking down the red
SEXTING Sexting, for those who don’t know, is sending sexy pictures and sexual messages. This can be via text messaging, Facebook messaging or the ever popular Snapchat. Row says this is a vital topic as many young girls are pressured into swapping ‘nudes’ (naked images of themselves), and many young boys are very willing to send unsolicited genital pictures. “Legislation is changing but there are still a mountain of kids out there that could go up on child porn offences and end up on the sex offenders register for life if they’re swapping nudes around whether they’re creating it or obtaining it,” Row says. “Parents need to actively discourage sexting between teenagers as much as they possibly can and be really clear that it’s completely illegal.” CONTRACEPTION AND STIs While these two factors have always been important in the birds and the bee’s discussion, they are just as relevant as ever. Dr Burgess says the most popular contraception young women are using these days is the combined pill. There’s a lot of misinformation out there online so it’s important to give your children informed advice and also take them to see a doctor should they be considering contraception. A recent concerning addition to the contraceptive landscape is an app that measures your temperature and tells you where in your natural cycle you can have sex without getting pregnant. And the kit that is being marketed to young women on social media can be ordered online with no consultation needed. So what does a doctor think of it? “I would definitely advise against that method as it has a high failure rate,” Dr Burgess says. “It’s very irresponsible. Just because you can buy it, sell it or make an app out of it doesn’t mean it’s a legitimately sound piece of advice.” Dr Burgess also says there’s many 13
younger women asking for non-hormonal and more natural contraceptives these days and there are many scientifically backed contraceptives that meet these needs, like a one size fits all diaphragm and copper IUCDs. “The other important thing too is the continued use of condoms to prevent against STIs (sexually transmitted infections). The contraceptive will help against unwanted pregnancies and the condoms help protect against STIs, and there’s certainly a lot of STIs on the coast.” Common ones Dr Burgess sees are chlamydia and herpes and then after that some less contagious things like atypical bacteria. She recommends STI testing with any new partners. HAVING THE TALK Row says it’s important to not have one talk but lots of conversations frequently. “Don’t sit down and have one great big talk at a set magical age. It’s actually more about having heaps and heaps of regular conversations,” Row says. Another important thing is to put aside all judgement. “Parents need to not judge them for the questions they are asking. Keep the communication open and don’t make them feel like they have to start hiding things,” she says. “No matter how scary the conversations might be, parents need to be the adults, suck it up and deal with their own personal yucky feelings. They also needs to listen. Really, really listen to what their kids are saying.” One last thing Row encourages is to open up relationships with their teenagers and other people like a god parent, an aunt or slightly older cousin, someone that they know and trust. “It takes a village to raise a child and that’s never been truer. Let the person know that they have your blessing to talk to your teenager about anything, go nuts!” July 2017

Helping artists to realise their visions and make their dreams come true is so amazing
A day in the life of Louise Bezzina, Artistic Director
ouise Bezzina is the Artistic Director of Bleached Arts and all the projects they deliver including the signature and main project Bleach* Festival. She lives in Burleigh Waters with her husband and two children, Connor 3 and Isabella 1. MY ALARM GOES OFF AT… I long for the days of alarms… I have two small children so they are my alarm these days. The morning is a mad rush. If it is a day I am working then I need to race around and get myself and the kids sorted to get out the door on time. HOW I GOT THE JOB… I created this job myself. I was fortunate enough to be in a position with Connecting Southern Gold Coast when they considered starting a new festival and I came up with the concept, program, business plan and strategy and raised all the funds to start it off, and it is now a festival that has its own company. I worked really hard to get to where I am today and had some fantastic opportunities
including working on Brisbane Festival and as the Programmer for the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts. MY TYPICAL DAY… There really isn’t a typical day in my job. There are lots of meetings. Meetings with artists, companies, government, stakeholders and sponsors. Planning, crafting, researching and then looking at delivery, as well as how a program comes together artistically, is all part of my role. I also need to look at a lot of work in order to see what artists are creating. BEST PART OF MY JOB… Without a doubt working with the artists. Helping artists to realise their visions and make their dreams come true is so amazing. I love that we get to inspire communities and help to build audiences for arts and culture here on the Gold Coast. I love my job and feel so lucky to be in the position I am in. WHAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T REALISE... There is a lot of administration required, you have to be aware of budgets and how to sell a vision. I think a lot of people think it is all just creative and fun.
Plan B: Another Arts Project
MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT… There are so many… TIDE in the Currumbin Estuary where as part of the 2015 Festival we had two dancers from The Farm perform a durational piece of contemporary dance on a sand bar for 48 hours. The community engagement over the 48 hours was extraordinary. WORST PART OF THE JOB… Disappointing artists when we can’t present or produce their show for whatever reason it may be. That is always hard. AFTER WORK… When I am not working I am with my children. On the weekends I am usually planning some activity that is with the kids… play dates, soccer lessons. I try to make sure I have some ‘me’ time and that usually consists of having a drink with my girlfriends. I see a lot of performances and travel a bit so life is always pretty busy! HOW YOU BALANCE IT ALL… Goodness, I think someone else should be giving some tips to me. This stage of my life with my career being so demanding and my children being so small means life is very much in the fast lane. There are still many sleepless nights in my household so I try to keep things as simple as I can where I can. We often stay pretty quiet at least one day a week and stay close to home and ‘chill’ (as much as a toddler and little boy can). Planning holidays, time with friends and date nights with my husband are really important to me and help to keep some balance.
I can’t ever imagine not working in the arts so I would just create something else or work for a company that I find inspiring. July 2017

Small business myths es to Let’s put these fabl all rest once and for
THE RANGE AVAILABLE IS SMALLER MYTH. Some think that small retail outlets will have less to offer as they are as they sound ‘smaller’. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. You see, when you shop at a big chain store, they have the same items stocked across stores around the country generally, and this gives them a limited amount of items to offer a customer. They may seem larger and more impressive from their size and sheer quantity but their options are relatively restricted. Whereas, when you shop small business, the options are endless and smaller stores generally have more unique assortments of items. You never know what gems you’re going to find. The owners can stock whatever items they choose to and you, as a shopper, can take full advantage of that variety. THE PRICES ARE TYPICALLY HIGHER MYTH. to a certain degree. This point really depends on what you consider into the cost. I.e. Bigger business generally have lower costs as their items are ordered in bulk allowing them to get and then sell items at cheaper prices. However, when you July 2017
shop small business you pay for items that are generally not made in bulk. You also pay for quality as well as a better service and experience in a smaller store, which is detailed in the next point. THE EXPERIENCE IS PRACTICALLY THE SAME MYTH. You walked into one small store and bought a pair of shoes, you walked into one big store and bought a pair of shoes… same-same right? Wrong. Larger stores have higher foot traffic so more customers means a less personalised experience, as hard as they may try. Whereas smaller businesses generally have less foot traffic and have the time to give you attention. And we all like being the centre of attention right? In a small business the owner cares deeply and passionately about everyone’s experience and wants them to have the greatest experience in their shop. BRANDS/QUALITY ARE INFERIOR MYTH. Smaller businesses are more likely to source better quality items, which are produced more ethically and often locally. Most of the items they stock are not mass produced as with big businesses, so time 16
and care is really put into each and every item. As much as big businesses try, quality can be somewhat compromised in the production process for some of the items. LESS BANG FOR YOUR BUCK MYTH. Big stores have loyalty programs in place that save you money on fuel, airfares and the list goes on. These programs keep you loyal and coming back to spend money, time and time again, as you are rewarded. The rewards can be good, yes, but don’t think rewards are just for big stores. Many small boutiques often have special sales and offers for their loyal customers and will reward them on an ad hoc basis.
We don’t mean to harp on about small business as we know you probably hear it often — “You should shop small and local”, “Support the local business owners” etc. — and we couldn’t agree more because you should. Not just because you will help small businesses who often support their whole family and community around them, but because you as a shopper will reap the rewards of a better shopping experience in a store that is passionate about great quality and great service.
The experience:Small business v Big business he experience: In true myth buster style we put it to the test and went shoe shopping at a big business department store (will remain unnamed) and a small business shoe boutique, Shoetique in Southport. Today I’m off to buy some cute new shoes for work. Nothing too high because I already own a bunch of high shoes and my legs and feet can probably do with a break at least one day a week. I’m thinking some ankle boots with a bit of detail. I don’t have much time as I have a bunch of other things to do so I want to be in and out ASAP — wish me luck!
Department store First stop is our department store. I walk in and no staff member looks twice at me. Now where are the shoes kept in this big maze? I dawdle past clothing, homewares and even bikes before I come across the shoe section. I then walk down the aisles until I come across a selection of five styles of ankle boots. None of them excite me and they range from bland, black and boring boots you could go farming in to slightly shiny brown boots that would look in place at a country rodeo — and best of all you wouldn’t know if you stepped in animal poo because it would blend right in. I’m here so I may as well try them on. I pick out three of the best of the bad bunch in a size 8. I try on the first, they make my ankles look chunky and I have very slender ankles — nope! Then I put on the next pair… these aren’t bad but they’re not good. The last I try to get my foot into and it is not going to happen. So I look for a 9 but there are none. I then search the store for someone to help me locate a pair of 9s. I must look quite a sight in my purple and green stripy socks almost slipping on the floor as I go. I ice skate my way to the sports department before I find a staff member. The young man looks very confused when I ask, “Hey, who can I talk to about a size up in these?” He walks over to an older woman working near the fitting rooms and shares with her my request. She asks me to wait here while she looks, she takes the ankle boot fit to fulfil every cowboy’s desire and disappears. Ten minutes later she returns with ugly boot in hand and tells me they are out of stock, sorry, but they have 9s in the knee high boots. I say thanks and skate my way back to my knee high boots I came in, that I certainly need no more of. I decide not to buy the second boot because it’s the 21st century and if something isn’t bad, that sure as heck doesn’t make it good, especially not for $60. I walk out of the store unfulfilled and a little frustrated, and no staff member even offers a good bye on my way out.
Shoetique Second stop, Shoetique. I’m instantly drawn to the window displays: they are fun, colourful and I’m already mentally preparing a list of the things I want to try on! I walk in the door and am greeted by Cathy,“Good beautiful morning!” — is she always so bubbly? She asks how I am and what I’m after, I smile and reply that I am well and describe my vision of simple ankle boots for work. I’ve barely finished my explanation before she starts pulling a range of boots from the shelves in every colour and style, with cut out features, zippers and different textures. She looks at my feet,“Size 8, right?” Wow, she’s good! She heads out the back to grab some pairs for me to try on, all the while chatting away about how bloody annoying these road works are — amen! Cathy helps me try on a few pairs and offers me refreshingly honest advice — “No, they cut your legs off,” ”No, wrong colour on you” — and we finally settle on a gorgeous tan pair with perfect heel height, a unique leather cut out pattern, and soft leather finish — I feel so accomplished! Cathy points out a few different ways I could wear them and I’m already picturing them with my new jeans! She grabs a scarf from one of the displays, which would match my new boots perfectly and offers it to me for 15% off.“What’s the perfect boots without a matching scarf?” she quips. This woman is my spirit animal! She boxes them up, I pay and she wishes me a lovely day as I walk out with a huge smile on my face. Day made!

As Australia's oldest beauty queen Suzi Dent proves age is no barrier and took out third place at the Mrs Earth 2017 pageant in Las Vegas last month
uzi Dent is proud mother to 15-year-old six foot four Jack, wife of 26 years to Don, and now an international beauty queen with a cause. As the first 55-year-young Mrs Earth Australia, she not only came in third place at Mrs Earth 2017 but also was awarded Mrs Earth Health 2017. This title represents a positive image for all women, and a healthy mind, body and spiritual realm, regardless of their size or age, and Suzi doesn’t take the responsibility that come with it lightly. “I aim to promote mental, physical, and emotional awareness by showing that I'm comfortable in my own skin, and in a healthy mind, body and spirit at all times,” she says. To receive this title she beat beauties from 36 countries including women who won Miss World. “Just goes to show that personality and 'being real' really do count!” she says. Suzi feels on top of the world from her successes and the recent turnaround her life has taken. Before Mrs Earth Australia her tomboy demeanour meant she had never even worn a formal gown, but

she has a strong belief that the opportunities you are given in life should be accepted and cherished. And she sure went after those opportunities! Suzi carries a positive ageing mindset and believes that has a huge influence on her ability to do what she does. She is incredibly proud to be the first 55-year-young Mrs Earth Australia, and believes age is a state-of-mind rather than a life-defining figure. She is determined to use her platform as Mrs Earth Australia 2017 to encourage men and women to embrace ageing and promote her legacy project for Soles4Souls — a charity that collects new or lightly worn shoes to distribute to those who have none around the world. At 55, Suzi has never felt more alive and wants to encourage others to embrace the inevitable! Suzi’s fearless mindset is powerfully inspiring, and she is determined to “start a conversation” about positive ageing. “I am hoping to inspire women to stop paying attention to their age number, and be fearless about making changes in their lives, and to celebrate their wrinkles, life experiences and knowledge.” Suzi is truly living by her favourite mantra,“Age is but a number, it’s what you do with it that counts!” July 2017

GET IT I MAKE UP
When it comes to getting ready in the morning it needs to be fast according to Amanda Higl, especially if you like to hit the snooze button time and time again utting your best face forward is a must. When we look good we feel good and, let's face it, a good day never happens when you look like a wreck. Let me help you get from Monday to Friday without a hitch. Get the most out of your blow dry — these cooler months are the most ideal hair weather so wear it down for two to three days. For oily hair folk dry shampoo is your friend, and for the rest of us dry shampoo is still your friend. Step 1 - WASH: When you wash your hair shampoo twice, get right in there, we want squeaky clean hair. Towel dry and then apply conditioner to the ends only; do not go anywhere near those roots! Rinse like you have never rinsed before, when you think the conditioner has been rinsed out, rinse again. Get your hands in there and move your hair around, feel the water get right on your scalp and work its way through to the end of your tresses. Towel dry. Apply some root lift spray — this helps to hold hair and give lift off the scalp. You may apply a light heat protectant but other than that nothing at all on the ends. Step 2 - DRY: If you can blow dry your own hair then go for gold. If you can't, tip your head upside down and blast your hair dry. Hold your hair off the scalp for max volume. Make sure the air direction from the dryer is blasting from your scalp to the ends, going along your hair shaft. This will give you the smoothest result. *Mind visual: hair under a microscope looks like fish scales
Business
at the front so you want to keep them lying flat, if you swish the air up the shaft it will make the fish scales rough = fluffy, fuzzy hair.* Hair needs to be 100 per cent dry, no damp bits. Now straighten or curl. Sleep on it. Hair is done for the morning. Do not brush, it will make it fluffy, tidy with hands if needed or just do the top layer and run the irons over it quickly, don't handle hair too much. Make the most of unwashed hair l Use some dry shampoo at the roots right throughout your hair, not only will it give you great volume but it saves doing too much on day two or even day three for some lucky people that can get that far. l Do not touch your hair! The oil from your hands will make it oily and lank and will reduce the amount of good hair days. l By day three your hair may need some help, time for a quick up do. Quiff the front, secure with two to three bobby
pins. With the dry shampoo in toe and a couple of days of — dare I say — dirt, you will only need to run your hands through and push the top section of your hair forward. Now put those pins in. Secure a pony tail or a bun — two minutes and you’re done. You can rock this for at least two days, maybe even three, and look it is now Friday! 5-minute face: Keep it simple Monday to Friday! Foundation, bronzer, eyeshadow, mascara and lip gloss. You should be done in a maximum of 5 mins. Glowing and gorgeous! There are no excuses for not looking good in your place of business, it achieves results in so many ways! Happy Monday, Tuesday, Humpday, Thursday and Friday! Do the
opinions
of others matter? Arm yourself to take on the latest addition to the digital battlefield — online reviews oes what others say and think about us affect our self-esteem, self-worth or opinion on how we should behave or present ourselves? I’m guessing the general answer would be yes. It’s in our nature to feel different emotions when others judge us, critique us or have an opinion on how we should think and behave. Take the emotion out of it and imagine you’re now a business… Can the same feedback actually affect your brand, your reputation or your standing in the community? The answer is most definitely yes. Let us ask you this, as a consumer, when you are about to buy a product, enlist a service, take a holiday or try the latest place to dine, what do you do? You most likely Google it. And what do you see? Normally the top five results that come up are reviews — other people’s opinions of the business. They either love it or they hate it. Usually people only put up reviews if they have something to complain about — hence the old adage — bad news travels faster than good news, right? Unhappy customers tell an average of 21 people about their experience; happy ones tell 8 people. This is serious stuff. Potential new customers judge a business on what others have experienced. Why? Because we live in a digital world that gives us way too much information and doesn’t necessarily allow us to experience it for ourselves, we live through others, just like on Facebook… but don’t get us started on that one. If you own a business or work for a business that you care about, trying to manage those online Simon Cowell “I’m so mean and you’re just rubbish” comments can be a challenge. Here’s a real life example… Let’s say you own a new gorgeous small café in a hip part of the Gold Coast. The foot
July 2017
traffic you get from your location is okay but you want more people to know about it. One day a bunch of young hipsters come into your café and all order coffees with some getting lunch too. They receive their food and drinks and two are not happy. One asked for an extra hot coffee and it’s only hot and the other asked for no cheese on their salad and cheese went on. Two mistakes that can slip through at peak hour in a café, and also two that can be easily fixed, had they of told your staff. But they are young hipsters so they decide to not tell the staff. meals, pay and then trash your business on Yelp, Trip Advisor and your Facebook page. A triple whammy. Suddenly your online presence that has only just started is trashed by not only the two unhappy customers but also the four other friends. They leave reviews like… l “They always serve coffee cold. If you want your coffee brought out to you while it’s still warm, you shouldn’t go here.” l “I ordered an item on the menu that said it was vegan but it came out with cheese. I ate it anyway because I’ve only been
Can the same feedback actually affect your brand, your reputation or your standing in the community? The answer is most definitely yes. vegan a week so really what difference would it make? (And I love cheese.) But still… these people are not vegan friendly.” l “We went here as a group and clearly the staff cannot cater to any more than one or two people because they got all of our orders wrong. Terrible place for groups to go.” Imagine if that was your business. You’d feel terrible they had such a bad experience and that you weren’t even given an opportunity to rectify it as they didn’t tell the staff in the café. You’d also feel frustrated that these reviews were fabricated, exaggerated and even contain nonsense. But it’s out there in the big World Wide Web now for all to see. Your reputation begins to head down the drain… The Get it team live and suffer through the digital age, and we are always looking for ways to help our clients ‘keep the wolves at bay’. Before you think it, no, this is not a sales pitch to get you to consider something we have discovered that is totally amazing and will potentially change
your life. We are just letting you know there are alternatives out there and maybe we can keep you from falling into the abyss of obscurity or fame depending on the context of the REVIEW. So let’s talk about why reviews are so important. Did you know that 92% of people have read online reviews of local businesses and 67% of Australians report reading online reviews before making a purchase decision? If you don’t have any reviews to find online, a considerable number of people wouldn’t look twice at purchasing from your business - ouch! What’s more is that people trust reviews as they are left by customers that experienced what your business has to offer (let’s hope their experience was a good one for your sake!). A whopping 68% of people say reviews make them trust a business and only 13% would go to business that has 1 or 2 star ratings online. So what people are saying about you actually does matter. We’ve come up with a system that works, and it’s working right now to help our clients get more good online reviews and, in
turn, more sales, purchases and customers through the door. We pride ourselves on changing how you are viewed online. Let’s go back to our unhappy hipsters trashing your gorgeous new café example. Imagine if you were able to see those reviews and implement customer relations with the unhappy customers by intercepting the issue before it makes it online… that would be amazing right? Too good to be true even? Wrong. It can be done and, even better, we know how to do it. We can help change your reputation online and build up a fantastic one with vibrant positive comments from real customers. As we said before, this isn’t a sales pitch, we just want you to know that you can change how others view you online, and you can control it too. Gold Coast Helicopter Pilot Ebonie Sheldon is flying rings around the city hen Ebonie Sheldon graduated aviation school at just 19 she was the only female helicopter pilot to fly commercially out of the Gold Coast Airport. At 22 years old now, she is making her mark on the industry and the lives of her passengers too. Although approximately 5% of pilots worldwide are females, that never stopped Ebonie from taking flight. Her family’s jet setter lifestyle in her early years forged a love affair with flying for Ebonie and she knew a career in the skies was for her. “My father worked in finance for Hyatt Hotels and Resorts when I was young,” she says. “This meant we were constantly travelling as a family and it definitely gave me a taste for flying at a very young age.” After doing the tough voluntary hours and enduring the rural relocation, she received her lucky break earlier in her career than most and scored a pilot position at ABC Heli in her hometown of the Gold Coast. July 2017
Ebonie now flies locals and tourists around the airways in her turbine helicopter — and enjoys the sights the sky has to offer. The picturesque coast of sea, city and mountains makes a great view and her personal favourite locations from the sky are the Southern Gold Coast and Hinterland. Everything from proposals to scenic flights are on the daily agenda for this keen flier who enjoys the heightened experience she gets to give her passengers. “Some days I may have a client ask me to fly them to lunch at Mavis’ Kitchen, other days I may be island hopping as part of an extravagant wedding proposal,” says Ebonie. “Making those special moments and occasions extra special for people is definitely the most rewarding part of what I do.” Ebonie’s ambition to achieve her goal is incredible and at her young age she has already achieved more than most. Although her age can come with questions from 26
her passengers who are used to seeing someone older in her seat. “I do have a lot of passengers ask my age before their flight. But there are 45-year-old male pilots out there that may be day two out of aviation school, I’ve been lucky enough to have flown full time for two years now,” says Ebonie. Another barrier Ebonie has overcome is being part of a male-dominated industry. She admits it wasn’t something she thought of when going after her dreams though. “To be honest, I don't think I realised quite how male dominated it was when I was starting. I can't remember it ever crossing my mind,” she says. While she feels female pilots are treated differently to men in the industry, she is living out her dream nonetheless and hopes she encourages other women out there to take their dreams to new heights. “I certainly hope I'm an inspiration to other women to follow their dreams.”

Hello fashionistas! You have 30 seconds to make a great first impression. The image you choose to portray to others is a big reflection of your own true self, so make sure you show off your best parts. Ever wake up with Mondayitis? Wishing the weekend was longer, stumbling around the house in sweatpants and t-shirt, the day is blurry and your vibe is very low… But if you have a positive outlook, shower and get dressed, you will see your attitude change and the sky will soon be the limit! Clothing is all about style and function; it's about how you present yourself to your coworkers. What you wear impacts you, affects others and can influence your entire company's reputation. So look at your work environment, depending on your role, and dress to impress without going overboard! You want to be remembered for your own sense of style, not as the company clown! Who will take you seriously... men in Mickey Mouse ties? Ladies in very short, low-cut dresses? Eyes up people! Well-fitting jackets, pants and skirts will give you more mileage in your work life — buy good quality which will do the miles. Casual marketing days can still be low key but also say ‘I mean business!’ Embrace dress down Fridays and show your inner 'goddess', however remember, it's not a fashion show. Finally, take note “Your smile is your business card.” Stay stylish,

GET IT I DATING
old fashioned
romance in 2017
Romance isn’t dead, it’s just been 2017-ified reports Get it’s Kirstin Cuthbert
ong gone are the Romeo and Juliet days. Hell, if we were to wake after a first date and he had drunk poison and killed himself, we wouldn’t find the closest sharp object and stab ourselves like Juliet, we’d get the heck out of there so we didn’t have a potential murder investigation on our hands. Besides, if we found him on a dating app, he probably isn’t worth dying over. As a bit of a hopeless romantic myself, I like to believe that romance isn’t dead. While most of my exes have not helped this cause, and dating in 2017 has almost diminished it completely, I still have hope. Perhaps we just have to find new takes on the chivalrous gestures of the past. Here are my suggestions. Picking you up at the door It’s 2017, you can hardly trust your mailman with your address let alone a stranger you have exchanged under 50 messages with. While the gesture is sweet, it’s often not welcomed these days and meeting at a mutual location where there are plenty of witnesses around is a more favourable choice. 2017 romance: Meet at a location that is easy and convenient for you to get to, he can go out of his way for the first date. Making sure you get home okay I still believe this is important! If you have been out on a date and it’s late, it’s nice for the man to want to know you got home safe — whether you’re driving, getting an Uber or walking. In the past he may have walked you to your front door and even got a kiss if he was lucky, but you’re a woman of the 21st century and it ain’t that easy anymore buddy. 2017 romance: A simple text from him asking if you got home safe is all that’s needed. Phone calls scare most people these days, and you just spent the last few hours thinking of things to talk about so that’s enough for one day. Just make sure he doesn’t try to escalate things in his text messages, remember you’re not that kind of woman! Letter writing I don’t know about you but there’s not many of us left who are willing to wait two weeks for a reply to our question. Even two hours and we start to get bothered we have no reply. Plus most of us don’t handwrite things anymore so our skills are out of practice and words are barely legible. July 2017
2017 romance: If he can engage in lengthy, deep and meaningful conversations where he is open and vulnerable, even if just through text messages, that’s a great romantic gesture. And it shows he wants to get to know you, not just your body. Serenading Whether by song, poem or some other art form, let’s be real, 2017 men couldn’t and wouldn’t do that. Also, we’d be horrified by it. If a song or poem was written about us, we’d be checking behind us when it got dark outside for fears we now have a new stalker. 2017 romance: Men, a great 2017 way to serenade a new potential love interest is by liking her photos on Facebook and Instagram without being asked to. Not so many that you seem creepy but a few nice ones that were previously posted, and then every new one you post from then on. Holding the door and giving flowers I combined these two because I’m almost out of 2017 romance ideas, you can’t blame me though, there’s really not that much romance left but I’m doing the best I can! Most men don’t open doors for girls anymore and we’ve basically just accepted it because we’re strong, independent women who can open our own damn doors *snaps fingers with attitude*. But it’s a nice gesture every once in a while. And flowers, women still appreciate flowers men! I actually received my first ever bunch of flowers this year, so safe to say guys have forgotten that it’s an easy way to a woman's heart. 2017 romance: Men, open doors for women occasionally and buy flowers on special occasions. Or, if that’s too hard, perhaps try to give her a different nice gesture by not playing games with her or talking to other women, chicks dig that. On second thought, most men these days would find opening doors and giving flowers far easier. You see? Romance is well and truly alive and kicking in 2017. And remember, nothing quite shows romance like having your man offer to take gorgeous pictures of you for your Instagram — and not complain when you make him retake basically the same photo 30 times over. Happy dating! 34

What do I need to prepare for my first visit with my family lawyer? oming to see a family law lawyer (or any lawyer for that matter) for the first time can be a little daunting. What will they be like? Will I understand what they are saying? Is this really happening? These are all questions you might ask. It is completely common for a person to be nervous prior to starting down this path but hopefully the following information will help you feel more at ease. Before your appointment it is helpful to write a chronology. This will help us get a brief understanding of your relationship and may help you during the appointment if you become overwhelmed and are unable to remember key dates. If your matter relates to the time spent with children, please give consideration to the following: l A calendar of important dates such as school commitments, extra-curricular activities, parents rosters etc.
l What were the care arrangements for the children during the relationship? Will this continue to work? l Are there any concerns about the children’s safety or where they might live when with the other parent? l Have you looked into childcare options or are you able to call on to relatives for assistance? l Can any arrangements be made easily with the other parent in regards to birthday, Christmas and the like? l Do the children have any ongoing health or medical needs? l Are you and the other parent able to co-parent in the best interests of the children? Although it is not critical, if you do have the following documentation, please bring it with you and we can take a copy:
l Health care or pension card l Parenting Plans or previous Court Orders l Any letters, emails, text messages or other communication that has been had with the other parent trying to resolve the matter l Court material filed by the other parent (if applicable) l Any Domestic Violence Orders l Federal Dispute Resolution Certificate if you have attended mediation previously l Any correspondence from DOCS if you have had dealings with them If your matter relates to property, we have additional advice on our website for that. GET IT I GENERAL
Walk and talks
Global corporate health and leadership specialist Nikki Fogden-Moore explains why the best decisions can be made out of the office reat leadership is a true trifecta of being healthy, wealthy and wise. So why are so many successful leaders still struggling to truly blend business and personal vitality without throwing their world upside down? Effectiveness, creativity, problem solving and collaboration are all vital elements of agile leaderships — yet we still spend more time sitting than we do sleeping. According to the Harvard Business Review senior executives spend 44 hours of meetings and 24 hours of e-mail per week. Research company Atlassian dug into the numbers and estimated unnecessary meetings cost businesses up to 37 billion dollars last year. So if you’re fed up of sitting in pointless meetings and wondering why your company productivity just doesn’t add up, it may be time to change your culture from within and adopt effective leadership habits with the walk and talk Here’s how.
Lead by example: Walking meetings have been the go-to for the ultra-successful all along; for the likes of Richard Branson, Mark Zuckerberg, Barrack Obama and Arianna Huffington. Connecting with your teams, staff and colleagues is crucial to create authentic connection. Review a typical week: Where are you and your teams wasting precious time? Look at the time you spend in meetings and start to re-boot how you work. As a kick start shift your meetings to the walk and talk where ever you can. Ensure you let the other person know it’s a meeting on the move: Know what your walk and talk route is and try not to ambush someone with idea. Laptops and note paper left behind increase your engagement with effective communication. You can always do a quick recap email back at your desk. Get creative and connected to your surroundings: Walking results in fresh oxygenated blood throughout your body. From a neuro-chemical perspective, our
brains are more relaxed during walks due to the release of certain chemicals, aiding creativity, problem solving and increases alertness. Plan walks and talks like any other meeting: Just be clearer on time frames. Walk and talks promote clearer, faster meetings. A nano-break to chat through an idea with a colleague can save hours of meeting times and provide a new way of looking at an issue or project. Great leaders do not score their results by the numaber of hours they sit in meetings, but by their ability to know the company landscape inside out. Being on the move enables you to ‘check in’ with the vibe in your organisation, get connected to small incidents that can prevent larger issues, know your staff, and be aware of the environment that your teams and your organisation operate in. Pick up the pace in your business, regain some valuable hours and reduce the cost of meeting times by making your decisions on the move.
Being on the move enables you to ‘check in’ with the vibe in your organisation, get connected to small incidents that can prevent larger issues, know your staff, and be aware of the environment that your teams and your organisation operate in. July 2017

Your business and your fitness have a lot in common wning or running a business is stressful — anyone that has done either can tell you! Two of the biggest challenges most people face in this 24/7 connected world are staying sane and emotionally level as well as being able to switch off and enjoy time away from the business. The catch is many people who are good at what they do wear their passion and fatigue like a badge of honour; they even brag to their friends about how little time off they have or how little sleep they get. So what if I told you I can find you another two to five hours a week that you can use anyway you like? Would you be interested in that? It is simple but it takes some effort. There are two major areas in which people lose time in their week that are directly affected by their health and fitness, as well as another major one that is a result of the other two. People lose time in transition Switching between tasks is difficult for the brain to do. One of my favourite books on this topic has the headline: ‘Manage your energy, not your time’. There is much time to be gained in being better at switching between the different tasks you have to undertake. Here are a few tips. 1. Turn off notifications on your phone (at the very least use the ‘do not disturb’ feature for a few hours a day when you are most productive). Having that noise, banner or even little annoying red circle at the top right of the app makes it hard to not find out what the message is! So turn it off all together. I promise you will be less distracted, more productive and people will wait. You can check things on your time rather than theirs.
Do yourself a favour, go and see a fitness professional, make an appointment, plan your week out with them and start feeling better. You’ll have more energy, sleep well and save days a year because you won't get as sick or as often… missing days of work will become a thing of the past! The value accumulated over time will have you never looking back!
Your JOUrneY to a more CONFIDENT you starts now!
2. Develop a routine to help you switch between roles. It is helpful for your brain to have a switch to get in the zone faster. Athletes use it, so should you! Exercise is a fantastic switch (even as little as 10 squats and 10 push ups will do it). The act of wrapping up what you did for the day and what you are looking forward to tomorrow also tells your brain that today is over, to relax and wait until tomorrow (and it gives your subconscious something to work on while you sleep). The best way to end the day is to do a personal training session! Having the appointment forces you to finish your work on time (see Parkinson's Law — work expands to fill the time you allow it), the time with the trainer is a great opportunity to focus on you, and you will leave your session ready to see your partner or family with the energy and focus they will appreciate!
The physical transformation will be amazing. The inner change is simply breathtaking.
People lose lots of time around food It's true, so much time is lost preparing food, eating food, cleaning up after food, travelling to get food, recovering from food (i.e. the 3pm post-lunch coma)… One tip that will save you at least two hours a week is to have a food prep day. A great thing to do with your family is to set aside a few hours to prep, cook and container your food for the week. You will cook much healthier, feel better, save a ton of money, save at least two hours of time and it also shows your partner and/or kids how important it is to look after yourself. (You can't' expect them to take their health seriously if you won't!) July 2017

Risky business Learn about the effect of untreated hearing loss in the workplace with Owner/Principal Audiologist of Clarity Hearing Solutions Grant Collins The thing about hearing loss is that no one can see it. Most people are so impatient they just assume that the person with hearing loss is being rude, or slowwitted.” – Marion Ross (Happy Days) How long can you get away with ‘bluffing’? What do I mean by bluffing? How long can you get away with a generic response or delayed reaction when a specific response or action is required? At home you may be able to skate by (sometimes on thin ice mind you) as we tend to forgive our loved ones for their misdemeanours readily. In the workplace we don’t. In the workplace if your responses or actions aren’t what’s expected from the request or instructions given at best people will start to question your abilities. At worst it can mean a bad outcome for a client or your business as a whole, or you could be endangering yourself or your colleagues. Work can be stressful enough without adding the extra stress of trying to decipher what’s being said. This can be particularly challenging in meetings or loud industrial workplaces when other conversations or noises hamper your ability to understand
what’s being said. So much of what is said in a meeting or negotiation is not about the words themselves, but the inflection with which they are said. Fail to recognise that and you may miss the true intent of what’s being said. Holders of commercial vehicle licenses and workers at most mine sites must legally wear any prescribed hearing devices. I have personally heard many tragic stories of near misses and fatalities on site where people weren’t wearing corrective devices. In business we bluff to retain a semblance of credibility and capability when our ability to interpret what we hear is reduced. It’s a natural reaction which we hone over many years, irrespective of whether we suffer from hearing loss or not. But when it becomes a daily occurrence we can be left exposed and humiliated. These days there’s no need to bluff.
Treatment for hearing loss has advanced dramatically. Gone are the bulky old beige aids from your grandfather’s day. Now we have solutions like embedded hearing aids that are completely invisible. Or tiny hearing aids that connect to your iPhone or the Internet giving you more control and connectivity. These are smart devices that enhance your performance and add to your credibility, not detract from it. Treating hearing loss can improve social, psychological and emotional wellbeing. If you need to be at the top of your game you must be in your best capable condition. Most importantly, you are not alone. In Australia people take on average seven years to address their hearing loss. That’s seven years of not functioning at your peak. If you suspect hearing loss, or your loved ones suspect it, see your qualified audiologist today to ensure you stay at the top of your game.
Hearing Aids: The latest technology and the smallest devices at compelling prices! Are you getting the treatment you need? Treating hearing loss isn’t about selling a hearing aid. It’s about correctly diagnosing the hearing loss and offering the right devices to treat that loss. Importantly, we must also ensure we fit your budget and your lifestyle.

GET IT I TECHNOLOGY
Staying
safe
online Following widespread cyber-attacks in May, Sarah Blinco reminds us of five easy ways to take control of online safety n May a malicious cyber-attack hit 200,000 people in over 150 countries including Australia. Businesses of all shapes and sizes were compromised and the implications of leaked private customer data is frightening. Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident and will happen again (and again). Whether you are protecting business or personal digital assets, here are a few simple things to consider that will go a long way to giving you the right protection online. Install software updates Many computer users (and I’m guilty) don’t like operating system updates because they can take a long time to install and use up a lot of space and data. That said, updates often include fixes for bugs in your software and, importantly, protect against new cyber threats. Choosing to install your software updates is entirely up to you, but it’s recommended and worth reconsidering in the face of what’s presently going on online. Antivirus is imperative If your computer did not come equipped with antivirus software from a leading supplier like McAfee, Norton or Malwarebytes, consider signing-up and installing immediately. There’s plenty of information online about reputable antivirus brands (free and paid) to help you make a choice about a product that suits you. Be sure to regularly update the software, or for ease I’ve set mine to update and scan automatically at regular intervals (this option is often presented to you as ‘recommended’ during set-up). Antivirus software helps to block email spam, and prevents you from having passwords, logins and personal details including bank or PayPal information stolen. Think about how you sign-in Advice I’ve been given is to change your passwords frequently July 2017
and do not use the same one across all your channels (social media, online banking and shopping sites). Devise a difficult-tocrack option, such as ‘D0n!Wo##y’ instead of ‘dontworry’. You may have noticed that many sites you login to frequently, such as Google, Dropbox or Facebook, now offer the option to setup two-factor authentication. This usually means that you will set a password to login to a site, and you will also receive a text message to your mobile phone with a login code — two ways you verify your identity. Watch out for public Wi-Fi Wi-Fi is available everywhere, but we are now encouraged to think twice before accessing it. Hackers are savvy to the fact that when we connect to Wi-Fi without using network passwords, our devices become accessible through unsecured gateways. This means all sensitive data on your device can quite easily be stolen. Set your devices to not automatically connect when a network becomes available — choose when, where and how you want to connect to the internet. Be aware of ‘phishing’ scams These cons are widespread and scammers are getting smarter, using email, text and app messaging to approach us. The scams appear to come from many different companies including your bank, phone provider or the tax department. Protect yourself by keeping antivirus software up to date, and by deleting any emails that ask for personal information like credit card numbers. Other warning signs of a ‘phishing’ scam include when the spelling or grammar looks wrong, if ‘urgent action’ is demanded, or if you’re given competition or cash news that sounds unrealistic or too good to be true. If in doubt about what’s right for you, drop into a computer service store or technology provider for professional guidance and advice on your options. 40

WINTER ABUNDANCE SALAD SERVES: 4 *Note: Don’t let the ingredients list scare you. This recipe is easier than it appears and the end result is worth the extra minutes in the kitchen. INGREDIENTS • ½ cup uncooked quinoa • 1 cup water • 1 tbsp vegetable stock (homemade preferable) • 1 sweet potato, peeled and cubed • ¼ tsp cumin • ½ tsp Himalayan salt • ½ tsp pepper • 1 tsp coconut oil • ¼ red onion, finely sliced • 6-8 sun-dried tomatoes, chopped • ½ apple, cubed • ½ cauliflower head, chopped into bite-sized pieces • ¼ tsp cumin • ¼ tsp turmeric • ½ tsp Himalayan salt • ½ tsp pepper • 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil • 1-2 medium sized corn cobs • 50g baby spinach, finely chopped • 1 lemon, juiced • ¼ tsp cumin • Salt and pepper to taste • Coriander (optional) METHOD Preheat oven to 180°C and line two baking trays with baking paper. Place the cubed sweet potato on one of the baking trays and sprinkle with the first measurements of cumin, Himalayan salt, pepper and coconut oil. Shake the tray to spread the spices evenly (or use your hands to rub the sweet potato cubes). Place the tray in the oven and set the timer for 40 minutes (check sweet potato every 15 minutes as different ovens cook at different speeds). Add to a pot one cup of water and bring to the boil. Place the quinoa into a sieve and rinse under running water for 1 minute. Add the rinsed quinoa to the pot of boiling water and stir through the vegetable stock. Reduce heat to low-medium, place the lid on the pot and set a second timer for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes turn the heat off and remove from the heat. DO NOT STIR! Bring a second pot of water to the boil and add the corn cobs. Boil for 5 minutes, remove from the water and allow to cool. Place the chopped cauliflower onto the second baking tray and sprinkle with the second measurement of cumin, turmeric, salt and pepper. Drizzle with olive oil and place in the oven for 20 minutes (if timed well, both cauliflower and sweet potato will be ready at the same time). Place the chopped red onion, sun-dried tomato, apple and baby spinach into a bowl. Carefully cut the corn kernels from the husk and place into the bowl. Run a fork though the warm quinoa to separate and add to the bowl (ensure the quinoa has had time to cool slightly). Once cooked, remove the sweet potato and cauliflower from the oven and add to the bowl. Drizzle with lemon juice and sprinkle cumin, salt and pepper to taste. Toss salad and top with fresh finely chopped coriander (optional). Serve warm or cold. Store in the fridge. July 2017

CACAO, COCONUT & DATE TRUFFLES TIME: 120 MINUTES | SERVES: MAKES 35
INGREDIENTS • 2 whole eggs • 1 medium banana, ripe (spotty) • 2 tbsp buckwheat flour (substitute: almond meal) • ½ cup blueberries • 1 tbsp coconut oil • Coconut yoghurt for serving METHOD Place the eggs, banana and buckwheat flour into a blender and blend until smooth. Heat a large frypan (ideally non-teflon) and spread the coconut oil across the middle of the pan. On medium heat, pour the batter into the centre of the pan forming round pancakes. Place blueberries into the pancake (approximately five to eight blueberries per pancake). Allow to cook until small bubbles form on the top of the pancake. Flip and continue to cook for a further 2-3 minutes or until cooked through. Remove and allow to cool slightly. Repeat until all batter has been used. Drizzle with coconut yoghurt and top with blueberries. Serve warm or cold.
NUT FREE CACAO BLISS BARS INGREDIENTS • 1 cup oats • 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds • 1/4 cup chia seeds • 1/4 cup shredded coconut • 100ml coconut milk • 1 tbsp coconut oil (substitute with extra virgin olive oil) • 50ml rice malt syrup • 1 tbsp cacao powder METHOD Preheat oven to 200°C and line a medium-sized baking dish with baking paper. Allow the baking paper to hang over the edges. Place the oats into a clean mixing bowl and secure lid. Set for 5 seconds, speed 6 and process until oats are fine consistency but not powdered. Add the remaining ingredients into the mixing bowl and secure the lid. Set for 1 minute, mixing speed and allow the mixture to combine. Allow the combined mixture to sit for 5 minutes. Spoon the mixture onto the baking paper and press with clean hands to flatten the mixture evenly across the baking dish. Place dish in the oven for 30 minutes or until set and starting to crisp on top. Remove from the oven and allow the dish to cool slightly by lifting the slice still within the baking paper onto a wire rack. Once cool, use a sharp knife to slice into bars. Store in the fridge or in an airtight container in the pantry. Recipe notes: - Coconut milk can be swapped for any milk alternative, however, coconut milk provides the most delicious bar in my opinion. - Rice malt syrup can be swapped to pure maple syrup (sweeter flavour) or honey (sweeter flavour) if preferred. Rice malt syrup is a great option for those wanting a low-fructose option and prefer their bars less sweet. - Pumpkin seeds can be swapped to your favourite seed, such as sunflower seeds.

Sarah Blinco gets honest about her lessons in gratitude
nother morning, another effort to get up. The sunshine wasn’t helping my mood and I knew before I touched it that I should refrain from reaching for my mobile the second I woke. Inevitably the first thing that appeared would be bad news. There was a period of time that was like this last year when, quite simply, I was unhappy. It’s nothing you haven’t experienced, I’m sure. If we’re lucky, we know that actually — soon, hopefully — things will be brighter, a bit at a time. During my particularly stressful period I was simultaneously dealing with illness in the family, a confidence crisis, finance worries, challenging business associates and a hopeless feeling of helplessness. Making matters worse, I was being particularly tough on myself for how I was reacting on the phone, over email and with friends. I kept apologising for being ‘that person’ who didn’t want to bring the lunchtime conversations down, and I was aware of carrying around a negative attitude. I wasn’t feeling, behaving or showing up as the me I wanted to be. I am all about taking charge though, and knew the only person who could change what was being reflected in my world was me. I invested time into shifting my view on areas of my life that were getting me down. Included in this effort was a dedicated daily gratitude practice, because if there’s one ‘secret’ I’ve seen work wonders in a multitude of difficult scenarios, it is the act of specifically identifying what has been good each day. When I was a child I was encouraged to recognise that there is always someone worse off, so to be grateful for my lot. That sentiment is largely true, although now I get that the real power in being grateful is that like attracts like. What I — what you — focus on expands. Some say it works like this: like attracts like, and if we focus on the bad bits like hours of miserable news broadcasts, difficult colleagues or those who have cheated us, that’s exactly what is going to show up more in our own experience. July 2017
If, however, we practice the shift to an attitude of gratitude such as,‘I’m grateful to have the cash to pay my rent’, or ‘I’m grateful to be catching up with Leanne today because she is an awesome friend’ (among thousands of other examples), more of the positives manifest in your world. A little bit of magic. Quite cool! None of this is revelatory though, so what was the big learning for me out of recent challenges? I realised there was something I constantly omitted from my own gratitude list. Me! Your list may include similar items to mine like ‘loving partner’, ‘friends and family’,‘cool boss’,‘dog’ (dogs plural, for that matter),‘good health’,‘upcoming travel adventure just paid off’… but do you include yourself? I have given myself such a hard time in the past for feeling miserable and worried about a whole host of things. I didn’t consider that my resilience was carrying me through and that my nous was leading me to rewarding points of realisation. You rock. We rock! I’m remembering to be grateful for that. I am grateful for my mistakes and the times I’ve spoken without thinking. I am grateful for the falls and how I picked myself up. I am grateful for the lessons learnt the hard way that I now share to help others. I am grateful for the words I can use to communicate, share and resolve. These days I add ‘me’ to my list, up the top with a smiley face. My intention is that this serves as a reminder for you to do the same on yours (smiley face optional). Regardless of what kind of day or week you’re having, take five to compose your top five things you’re grateful for now. Make it bright, bold, and uniquely you. Let us know your thoughts on Facebook — is gratitude one of your go-to strategies for shifting out of a difficult period? Get it girl Sarah Blinco is a business communications professional.
