March 8 is International Women’s Day. Globally, it’s a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievement of women everywhere. For me, International Women’s Day is a stark reminder of the importance of the many amazing women in my life. There are my brilliant colleagues, clients, and work associates – most of whom are women, fabulous and supportive women, lifting each other up if given the chance. Then, there are my beautiful female friends. I’m fortunate enough to have maintained many long-term female friendships, from different times in my life – school, work, my children’s school. Life is busy, for me and them, so I’m rarely able to enjoy Sex in the City style catch ups, but when I do get together with my girlfriends, it’s as though no time has passed. Best of all, I know if I ever need them, they’ll drop everything to be there for me. As I would be for them.

I’ve connected with amazing women online too, beautiful, supportive friendships developed completely via the internet. But the most important woman in my life, is my mum. I’m one of those lucky daughters whose mother is their best friend; we chat at least once a day, about the important and the mundane, and everything in between. But my mum is much more than that. She’s my advisor, my confident, and my inspiration. Fierce and independent, while also kind and nurturing, she’s everything I hope to be, and everything I hope for my daughter too. Here at Get it Magazine, I get to work with a brilliant bunch of women, and this month, we celebrate some amazing local females (with a special focus on the over 40s – a group I joined last year!). Learning, Living & Loving Through A CFO turned international speaker, life coach, author, expert on loss and co-founder of The Chaston Centre, it’s safe to say that Karen Chaston wears many career hats. Karen sits down with Get It Magazine to talk about learning, loss and creating a life that you love after 50. 1. How has life shifted from when you were a CFO, and what did you learn from over 25 corporate years? I now refer to my CFO days as me living in a “ground-hog-day daze.” Each day rolled into another, where I was working too much, eating and drinking to excess. At the time, I never realised how disconnected I truly was. When I chose redundancy, I took the time to stop and have a good hard look at the way I was living. I appeared successful on the outside, but I very quickly realised that I was on a fast track to a heart attack, stroke, type 2 diabetes as well as losing many of my relationships. This pause assisted me to find out what I wanted to change, and also assisted me to realise how much I had been holding myself back.
2. How did your own personal loss turn into this new career path for you? A huge part of my journey to co-founding The Chaston Centre was me deep diving into loss. I knew that I had grieved the death of my son Dan the hard way, and I followed the age-old advice “keep busy, give it time and GET IT March 2022
all will be alright.” We always will learn and grow more from tragedy, when we choose to stop and do the deep dive to find the most ideal way forward.
3. What does a day in your life look like currently? Every day is different, but I like to start by rising early, watch a sunrise and walking with my dog. Then it’s normally a big green juice, whilst I tune into what is scheduled for the day. Lately it has been full of Zoom calls with clients or networking groups, creating social media posts, videos, updating programs and I like to do some writing each day. I’m in the process of beginning my sixth paperback! I’m also blessed to have six grandchildren that live close to us on the Gold Coast and three in Sydney, so there is always some quality time with them.

6. What’s next for you? After working for a few years with individuals assisting them to move beyond any kind of loss, I started to contemplate what the workplace would have been like if I had these understandings regarding people when I was a CFO. I knew that the whole workplace would have had more of a team dynamic and a collaborative, innovation focus. Your people are your greatest assets and now more than ever it’s time to inspire each other to take ownership in bringing more love, kindness and compassion into all areas of their own life and the life of others.
4. For women over 50 who might be looking to find their passion, how do you recommend they go about it? I’m a great believer that life leaves bread crumbs. To pick them up you have to start asking and answering some meaningful questions. What did you love doing as a child? What brings you joy? What adversity did you overcome? What can you do for hours and you don’t notice the time pass?
5. What do you love about living on the GC? My husband and I returned to the Gold Coast in 2019 after 15 years back in Sydney,

Ok, I give in. High waisted, wide leg jeans just DO NOT suit me. I’m not very tall and have an ample backside (which is now apparently a good thing?) and I have tried to wear ‘mum’ style jeans on multiple occasions. My 19-year-old daughter assures me they look great, but I just can’t do it. I really have tried, and I like to consider myself reasonably fashionable and stylish (sort of). However, it is past time to admit defeat. I’ve actually come to realise that there are sections of my wardrobe – outfits and styles that actually cause me pain. They will either fit when I lose 5kg or are of a style that I thought would suit but doesn’t really (but were too expensive to throw out!). The thing is I’m not 20, I’m nearly 50. I can look excellent in beautiful clothes AND be comfortable at the same time. I need to dress for me, not to attract the male gaze or even to impress the female one. Just before Christmas I attended my niece’s dance concert. It was one of the most adorable things I have ever seen! There is nothing more joyous than a five-year-old wearing sequins and a twirly skirt and dancing (slightly out of step) with abandon and enthusiasm to a happy pop song.

Known for her roles on muchloved Australian series including Home and Away, The Saddle Club and Wentworth, actor Marny Kennedy now calls the Gold Coast home, and sits down with Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter to share her latest projects, secrets of the acting world and her new life in Queensland. In the performance world from a young age, Marny Kennedy was born for the stage and screen, with a family that always encouraged her to shine in her own right. “My Mum owned a dance school for the entirety of my childhood, so I grew up performing on stage - I was still in nappies for my first dance concert, so I’ve definitely always known and loved performing. It wasn’t until I was about eight or nine that Mum introduced drama classes to the school, and that’s when I knew I wanted to pursue acting,” Marny shares, “I came from a small town in the western suburbs of Melbourne, and I was never necessarily exposed to anyone who had acted in television or film before - I just loved telling stories.” At just 11 years old, Marny scored a lead role on the series ‘Mortified’, and this changed the trajectory of her life forever. “That was
irrefutably one of the most formative experiences of my life, marking the beginning of my career and allowing me to fall in love with acting. I was fortunate enough to win an AFI award for that role, which led me to be able to go over to the US and get my first representation over there. I don’t think I’ll ever stop feeling grateful for that entire experience.” Now settled into her life on the Gold Coast, Marny knows she’s made the right move, after spending two years in Melbourne lockdowns. “I desperately needed a circuit breaker!” Marny explains, “Prior to lockdown, a huge part of my life was centred around travelling, and having the freedom to just get in the car and go. All I wanted was to pack up the car and get back to exploring, especially as I’d just become an ambassador for Mazda. So when the opportunity came up to move to Burleigh to live with one of my best friends, I ran towards it.” As a working actor, auditions make up a significant part of her schedule, and Marny is embracing the faster pace of a life without lockdowns. “My Mum was the one to recently say, ‘There’s a version of you in lockdown who would have killed to be able to just book a flight and go, so you should absolutely do as much of that as you can now.’ Auditions have definitely kicked up a gear in the last few weeks, so I’m back into the swing of self-taping as well.” Knowing the industry behind the scenes, Marny shares with us the process to get 17
from script to screen. “Landing a job and being on set is the result of months and months of auditioning. It takes a huge amount of patience, persistence and grit to keep going, knowing that 90 per cent of the auditions aren’t going to land. But when one does, it truly makes it all worth it.” “The project that is actually taking up the majority of my time at the moment is a screenplay I’ve been developing alongside one of my oldest friends, Charlotte Nicdao. We are still in the early stages, but it was one of the best things to come out of being in lockdown.” Catching up on lost time, Marny is taking in all that the GC has to offer, and she tells me, “The Gold Coast is hugely nostalgic for me, as it’s where I lived whilst filming my first ever television show. The sleepy little place that I once lived in as a kid has now grown up and has inherited so many amazing restaurants, cafes and bars.” As a seasoned actor, Marny recognises that success today means something different to her younger years, “I’ve learned that the most memorable moments are much quieter - the camaraderie and connection you make somewhere in between the 5am call times, which have led to some of my most important, lifelong friendships.” With a packed schedule and projects galore, Marny is taking it all in with a new appreciation for the little things, “I’m really just enjoying settling into life on the Goldy, getting into the ocean and just enjoying my freedom finally!” Mazda Australia ambassador Marny Kennedy loves exploring the Gold Coast in her Mazda CX-3, whether it be her favourite restaurants or longer drives to the hinterland.

Gold Coast ‘super serum’ going global A super serum changing lives thanks to a determined Gold Coast family. Despite having no experience in the competitive skincare and beauty business, the Painter family set out to find a breakthrough solution. “Nothing Dad put on his skin was helping - the topical creams he was prescribed were too harsh and his skin looked red and inflamed,” says son Anthony Painter, who co-founded the all-Australian beauty brand Ellus & Krue with sisters Jo Painter and Kimberley Verschuur. After decades of working outdoors in the construction industry as well as enjoying

his fishing – mostly without sun protection – their dad Tony struggled with skin cancer from the age of 50. “Just after his treatments, his skin would always be dry from the liquid nitrogen, and he couldn’t find products to help him. Having had plenty of treatments, his skin was terrible,” Anthony said. For over a year, the family worked with a local compounding pharmacist, going back and forth with ingredients to form the basis of a serum, particularly for dry skin. Research took them down the path of making a serum that would be more intensive. The concentrated drops of a serum would penetrate the skin more deeply. It might cost a bit more, but a very 18
small amount of serum would last months. The cosmetic business newcomers took on every challenge: “Initially, we didn’t even know where to source things. We didn’t know where to get product containers and boxes, or handle the labeling, testing, regulatory and compliance requirements,” Anthony said. “I was in the construction industry like my dad, so I had no idea where to start.” Then, just a year into their new venture, a chance meeting took the family business into the realm of evidence-based skincare. At an event they happened to meet Professor Derek Richard, the scientific director of the Cancer and Ageing Research Foundation at Queensland University

ANTI-AGING TREATMENTS: HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT RF MICRONEEDLING? Cosmetic and anti-aging medicine has come a long way in recent times. There are so many products and treatments available these days it can be difficult to know where to start and what the best option for you is. Anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, threads, light therapy, laser, IPL, creams and serums, the list is ever growing. So what can be done to help with skin lifting, tightening and rejuvenation at a deeper level? Fractional radio frequency (RF) micro-needling is a treatment that can be performed on all skin types to stimulate and remodel collagen. It helps to reduce the signs of aging, producing skin lifting and tightening, improving fine lines, wrinkles and scars with little to no downtime. It is also incredibly effective as a treatment for acne scarring. The combination of RF technology with micro-needles is able to stimulate new collagen and is highly effective in remodeling the structure of the skin at multiple levels. What can RF be used for? Face - non-surgical face lifting, wrinkle reduction, skin tightening, skin rejuvenation, pore reduction, improvement

of acne and other scars. Body - scars, stretch marks, excessive underarm sweating. How is RF micro-needling performed? Numbing cream is applied to the area to be treated approximately 45 minutes prior. During the treatment, the hand piece is progressively moved over the skin, stamping the area with the fine micro-needles and delivering the RF frequency. What does RF feel like? A brief prickling sensation and warmth lasting a fraction of a second is generally felt each time the skin is stamped. Some areas, for example around the jawline, eyes and mouth, may be a little more sensitive, however even here the discomfort is brief and usually well tolerated. What to expect after the treatment? The treated skin is usually red, warm and tingling immediately post treatment. Redness generally settles within 24 hours. Most patients will return to work the next day without any obvious effects. As the micro-needles do break the skin surface 26
minor pinpoint bleeding is common. Very occasionally a fine crust of scab may develop in some areas. How many RF treatments are required? Generally at least 3 treatments spaced around 1 month apart are recommended to see significant results. The more treatments, the better the results. How long does it take to see results? Results are seen after 4-6 weeks but will continue to develop for up to 4 months after each treatment. Are there any side effects? RF is a very safe cosmetic procedure with minimal down time and very few side effects. Prolonged redness and minor swelling for up to 3 days, temporary patterning of treated skin, minor bruising, skin colour changes (most common in darker skin patients), and infection are potential but rare side effects. As we age, we see an increase in the number of chronic diseases and conditions, including stroke, osteoporosis, poor balance, diabetes, dementia, and high blood pressure, to name a few.
These diseases and conditions don’t discriminate either, with both males and females suffering as they age, particularly above 55 years. The questions often asked are, why this is the case and what can be done to slow the process? The good news is that the answer to both of these questions can help keep us healthy and reap the most out of life while we age.
Depression, anxiety and stress can also lead to psychosocial issues often due to social isolation. So why has exercise been so helpful at preventing and reversing such states? The benefits of structured, regular exercise programs using resistance, aerobic and balance training for this population has seen significant benefits across falls risk, mental health, cardiovascular disease and comorbidities. There are a number of components of exercise, each of which play a specific role in bettering health. These include: •
In a 2009 study, the two factors found most important in determining mortality, functional independence and quality of life included: •

An individual’s muscle mass and strength.

It showed that across multiple countries of the world, the promotion of regular physical activity was the main non-pharmaceutical measure associated with a reduction in mortality for older populations. Two key focuses of the study were falls and mental health. Increased fall incidences in the elderly is often caused by a combination of weaker lower limbs, impaired reaction time, general loss of muscle mass and multiple medications, which in combination can lead to compromised balance.

Aerobic exercise: This is exercise specifically targeting the cardiovascular system (the heart muscle). Examples may include walking, stationary bike or anything that gets the heart rate up. Benefits of this exercise include improved fitness, cardiovascular health, weight management and prevention of chronic disease. Resistance training: This is exercise targeting our muscles, with examples including weights machines, bands and body weight exercises. Specific benefits include increased strength and muscle mass, improved bone health, reduced falls risk as well as improved mobility. Balance training: This, as the name states, looks at tailored exercises to challenge our proprioception and balance. Benefits of this include improved balance, heightened proprioception and a decrease in the number and severity of falls.

Shrimp & vegetable stir fry SERVINGS: 4 | PREP TIME: 15 MINS | COOK TIME: 15 MINS
Succulent shrimp and a medley of fresh vegetables mix and mingle in a spicy sweet sauce. You’ll love how our healthy stir-fry goes from prep to table faster than you can get takeout. Directions In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, sambal, honey and rice wine vinegar. Select the Stir Fry mode on the Power Pan, set the temperature to 230°C and the timer to 15 minutes. Pour 1 tbsp. of the oil into the pan and allow it to get very hot, so it shimmers and smokes slightly. Add the shrimp to the pan and cook until 1 to 2 minutes a side until just seared and turning opaque. Add one spoonful of the soy mixture to the pan, toss the shrimp to coat, then remove them from the pan and reserve them to the side on a plate.
Ingredients 3 tbsp. low-sodium soy sauce
Pour the last of the oil to the pan and add in the onion, red and orange bell peppers, mushrooms and snow peas. Cook, stirring regularly until they begin to colour and soften, about 3 minutes. Add the scallions, garlic and ginger and cook 1 minutes more until they become very aromatic.

Try an autumn-inspired twist on a restaurant favourite— diced sweet potatoes add an irresistible earthiness to stir-fried noodles and bean sprouts. Plus, our easy, DIY sauce blends savory and sweet with the perfect amount of heat.
Ingredients 2 tsp. Canola or vegetable oil 220 gram sweet potato, 0.5 cm dice 1 shallot, finely diced 3 cloves garlic, minced 0.5 cm piece ginger, peeled and minced 2 eggs, whisked with a splash of soy sauce 120 gram dry pad thai noodles (rice noodles), prepared to package instructions 1 cup fresh bean sprouts juice of half a lime salt and pepper to taste Pad Thai Sauce ¼ cup water 1 tbsp. soy sauce 3 tbsp. fish sauce ½ to 1 tsp. sambal, to taste 3 tbsp. brown sugar or palm sugar 1½ tbsp. tamarind paste Garnish chopped roasted peanuts, fresh bean sprouts, chopped scallions, lime wedges, sambal
Directions To make the pad thai sauce, whisk together the water, soy sauce, fish sauce, samba, sugar and tamarind paste in a medium bowl. Make sure to whisk long enough for the sugar to dissolve. Select the Stir Fry mode on the Power Pan, set the temperature to 205°C and the timer to 15 minutes. Pour in the oil and allow it to get very hot, until it shimmers and maybe lightly smokes. Add in the sweet potato, stirring regularly, 4 to 5 minutes. The sweet potato should start turning brown on the outside and be fully softened. Then add in the shallots, garlic and ginger, again stirring regularly, until very aromatic and slightly browned, about 2 to 3 minutes. Slide the sweet potato, shallot, garlic and ginger to the edges of the pan and add in the eggs, using a wooden spoon to quickly scramble them, 1 to 2 minutes. If the eggs are in larger pieces, use the spoon to break them into bite sized pieces.
Pour in the prepared pad thai sauce and the bean sprouts, stirring through, and cook for 1 minute. If the noodles are sticking together and the dish looks dry, add up to ¼ cup of water to loosen. Mix in the lime juice, taste, and adjust with salt and pepper as desired. Divide the pad thai among serving bowls and top with roasted peanuts, bean sprouts and scallions. Serving the lime wedges and extra sambal on the side. QUICK TIPS Sambal 101—if you’ve never used this sauce made from chiles, herbs, spices, and aromatics, prepare to be amazed by the complex flavor. Noodling Around—avoid mushy noodles by soaking until they’re bendy but not soft.
Add to the pan the prepared rice noodles, tossing everything to fully incorporate. Continue cooking, while stirring and tossing regularly, for another 3 to 4 minutes. 29

Red wine braised short ribs SERVINGS: 6 | PREP TIME: 30 MINS | COOK TIME: 6 TO 7 HRS
Ideal for lazy Sunday suppers, our short ribs are slowly braised to tender perfection in a flavourful red wine and beef stock broth. Ingredients

Select the brown/sauté mode on the premiere slow cooker, set the temperature to 205°c and the timer to 20 minutes. pour in the oil and allow it to come to temperature. season the short ribs with the salt and pepper.
1800 gram bone-in short ribs, at least 4 cm thick 2 tbsp. kosher salt 1 tbsp. freshly ground black pepper 6 cloves garlic, smashed and peeled 1 medium onion, medium dice 3 ribs celery, medium dice 2 carrots, peeled and medium diced 3 tbsp. tomato paste 2 cups dry red wine 2 tbsp. red wine vinegar 3 cups low sodium beef stock 4 sprigs fresh thyme 2 bay leaves 1 cup parsley, coarsely chopped
Once the oil has started shimmering, sear the short ribs in batches until well browned on all sides. transfer all of the seared short ribs to a large plate or baking sheet while you sauté the vegetables. Place the garlic, onion, celery, carrots and tomato paste in the premiere slow cooker and cook, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon, until the garlic is aromatic, and the tomato paste has turned a darker shade of red. Pour in the red wine, red wine vinegar and beef stock, stirring until everything is evenly combined and releasing any browned bits from the bottom of the pan with the wooden spoon. Return the seared short ribs to the premiere slow cooker, along with the thyme and bay leaves. Select the low heat slow cook mode and set the timer for 7 hours. Cook, covered, for 6 to 7 hours or until the short ribs are tender and easily pull away from the bone. Transfer the ribs and vegetables to a large serving platter, discarding the thyme and bay leaves, and tent with aluminum foil to keep warm. Using a ladle, skim as much fat as possible from the top of the cooking liquid. season the liquid with salt and pepper, to taste. uncover the short ribs and vegetables and spoon a generous amount of the cooking liquid over the top. Top the platter with freshly chopped parsley just before serving. Quick tips Wine selection—merlot to pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon to shiraz, you can’t go wrong by cooking with a dry red wine you’d enjoy drinking. Patience pays off—slow cooking with low heat is key to delivering melt-in-your-mouth short ribs.

Ingredients 450-gram tomatillos, husks removed and cut in half 1 small onion, roughly chopped 2 poblano chiles—cored, seeded roughly chopped 2 jalapeños, seeded and roughly chopped 3 large garlic cloves ½ cup chopped cilantro 1 tbsp. dried oregano leaves salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup water 1 tbsp. vegetable oil 7 cups chicken low sodium chicken stock 4 boneless skinless chicken breast 3 (420 gram) cans of hominy, drained juice of 1 lime Optional toppings for serving: lime wedges finely shredded iceberg lettuce thinly sliced radishes thinly sliced onion diced avocado sour cream
Directions In a food processor or blender, puree the tomatillos, onions, chili’s, garlic and herbs - stopping to scrap down the sides with a spatula as needed. once the mixture is roughly blended, add the water and puree again until smooth. season to taste with salt and pepper. Select the simmer mode on the power pan, set the temperature at 95°c and the timer for 2 hours. heat the vegetable oil and add in the puree. cover and cook for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes or so to ensure the puree cooks evenly, until it intensifies in flavour and becomes a dark green colour. Add the chicken stock and the chicken breast, cover again, and cook for 45 minutes. Carefully remove the chicken breast from the pan and put it in a large bowl. using two forks, (or your hands if you let the chicken cool enough), shred the chicken into pieces that will fit on a spoon, then add back into the pan along. add the drained hominy and lime juice. check the soup for seasoning, adding salt and pepper as needed. Allow the hominy enough time to warm through, then ladle the soup into serving bowls, ensuring each bowl gets an equal amount of hominy and chicken. serve along side a platter of the garnishes for people to add to their soup as they choose. IIXIIST Director and financial literacy expert Rebecca Klodinsky talks with Get It about having those critical conversations with your partner, and how to plan for financial security when we can’t predict the future. 1. For women marrying or finding a longterm partner later in life when they have already established their career, what is the first step to making sure their personal finances stay safe and secure? Don’t be afraid to be open and honest about wanting to protect yourself. Plan, plan, plan! Make a plan and make a backup plan. You need a strategy to maintain a lifelong marriage and you need a strategy to survive the separation if this were to happen too. 3. Could you share with us about your own experience, and what led you on this path to now being a financial literacy expert? Luckily, I started my company prior to meeting my ex, but during part of our relationship my company grew to extreme heights and I became extremely financially well off. When the relationship ended, his claws came out - it was like I never knew who this person was! After years spent on legal proceedings, fighting for what was mine, it was thankfully deemed that he was not entitled to any of my profits or assets. Life lessons (and legal bills) led me here! 4. Do you think women who are at a slightly more established stage in life are seeing positives for keeping their own

5. What is a cohabitation agreement vs a prenup, and do we all need one? A cohabitation agreement applies to anyone who is planning on or has recently started living with their partner in a defacto relationship. A prenuptial agreement applies to couples who legally marry. If you gain good advice from good lawyers, each of these agreements should protect you personally and retain your assets, savings and company, should you decide to separate and one party tries to extract funds from you. 6. Where can we go for the best advice? Start with your accountant, ask them to put you in touch with a commercial lawyer who would be able to draw up an agreement for you. If you have friends in business or mentors, go to them for guidance, too.
