Today alone, I called my mum three times.
The first was my usual morning call, made during the drive home after dropping the kids off to school.
The second time was to share some good news.
The third, was to talk through some frustrating news. I wanted to vent, but I also wanted her advice.
Each time, we talked for at least half an hour.
This is nothing unusual.
Talking to my mum is an essential part of my daily routine. Talking comes easy for us. My eldest son often laughs, bemused by how much time we can spend just chatting
She’s also the first place I turn when I’m in crisis. Big or small, talking to my mum always makes me feel calmer, more in control.
She shares my highs too. Telling my mum good news is like experiencing it all over again.
So, on Mother’s Day, I know just how fortunate I am. To have a mother so wonderful, so close. To have a mother at all.
Ageing, I find, only makes me need and value my mum more.
It makes me reflect on my own mothering too. It’s hard. So the older I get, the more grateful I am.
So this Mother’s Day, I’m sending love to all the mums, the daughters, the step-mums, the single mums, the mums-to-be, the wish-they-were-mums, daughters who’ve lost their mothers, mothers who have lost their children, fathers who are doing the job of both.
Happy Mother’s Day, love the Get it girls xxx

One of my favorite internet memes is a slide saying ‘no one is more determined than a woman moving furniture by herself’.
Yep. That’s me. No overstuffed sofa twice my size will defeat me. I’ll risk certain disc herniation before waiting for someone to help me. I can be extremely stubborn (some may say pigheaded even) but I get A LOT done. Like most women my responsibilities are split, my attention is divided between family, work, community… married at first sight. Why could NO ONE seem to call Harrison out! He was such a complete manipulative, gas-lighting dick! I digress.
When I was in high school we were all given bumper stickers saying ‘girls can do anything!’ Well d’oh of course they can. The question is ‘Do they really want to?’ We spent sooo much time proving how capable we are that and we’ve been told sooo many times that ‘we can have it all’ that we may run the world but we also run ourselves into the ground. Here is the super power we all need –the ability to say no to something without guilt, without providing an excuse and without a second thought.
I was recently with a friend and we ran into someone she knew through work. This other lady had obviously asked her to a networking lunch and clearly wanted her to go. When asked, my friend said calmly, clearly – ‘no I’m not going’. Full. Stop. No ‘oh I’d really like to but….’ No ‘I’ll come to the next one’, no ‘I’m really sorry but I’m having brain surgery on that day’. Just a plain simple ‘no’. I was blown away. WHAT A WOMAN! I told her (after the other person had gone) how incredibly impressed I was with her answer. She seemed bewildered as to what was so amazing. The thing is …she’s right. There should be nothing amazing about saying no to something you don’t want to do. To letting your boss know that you’re a bit swamped and can’t take on another project. To telling your family that you just need someone else to cook this week. But (maybe it’s just me) we push through getting more and more stretched until with collapse in a teary heap and/or come down with the flu.
So, I have a challenge for you. The next time someone asks something of you that you know is just one thing to many, say ‘No’. Don’t justify it, just state it clearly. Trust me, it will be hard at first but then you will feel ABSOLUTELY amazing. I’m even going to try it myself ☺ I loved Wonder Woman as a kid – I wanted a golden lasso and boots, I even wanted the invisible plane. If I had to have a hero these days it would be ‘Self-preservation woman’ and my magical accoutrements would be an overstuffed couch I moved myself and the ability to lie on it, with a glass of wine, doing absolutely nothing and feeling zero guilt.

With rental prices continuing to skyrocket, an increasing number of young people have set their sights on homeownership, but as rates too are on the rise, most are struggling to crack the market.
As a result, many young singles and couples are turning to the ‘bank of mum and dad’, leaning on their parents’ financial security to lock in their own bank loan.
But while there can be some benefits, experts warn there are risks, so it’s important for everyone to enter an agreement with their eyes wide open.
“According to recent research, about 40 per cent of 25- to 34-year-olds expect to call on the ‘bank of mum and dad’ to achieve home ownership, with many likely to utilise a parental or family guarantee,” Louisa Sanghera said.
“However, guarantees come with potential positives and negatives for both parties, which means everyone needs to understand the commitment they are undertaking.”
Ms Sanghera said parental or family guarantees had been increasing in popularity over the years given the high price of property, as well as the rising equity many long-term property owner “mums and dads” had in their homes.
“In essence, a parental or family guarantee is when a parent or family member uses the equity in their home as security against a loan taken out by their child or family member. For example, if a mum or dad has $500,000 equity in their home, this equity can be used as security against their child’s mortgage,” she said.
“Of course, there are pros and cons with using this mortgage facility, which I always recommend everyone understands thoroughly before proceeding with this option.”
Here are the pros and cons to consider, according to Ms Sanghera.
Pros
1. The borrower doesn’t need as big a deposit as they are using their parents or family member’s property as security.
2. A parental or family guarantee can potentially mean avoiding or reducing the cost of Lenders Mortgage Insurance.
3. There is no cost to the guarantor – as long as the mortgagor always makes their mortgage repayments.
4. Once the mortgagor has built up enough equity in their home or has paid off enough of the mortgage to get to an 80 per cent Loan to Value Ratio (LVR), the guarantor can be released from the agreement.
Cons
1. If the mortgagor defaults on their mortgage, the guarantor – parents or family member – is liable for the entire sum that they’ve promised to cover which is the amount over the 80 per cent LVR.
2. The guarantor’s ability to take on further loans for themselves or for guaranteeing others is diminished during the guarantee period.
3. The guarantor may be putting their own home at risk if the mortgagor defaults on their home loan and they are unable to repay the initial sum guaranteed.
Our sense of self-worth and self-esteem are intrinsically aligned with how we feel the world sees us and perceives us. Paradoxically, it is imperative, that in order to feel grounded, strong, content and at peace with ourselves, we have to fundamentally ‘like’ who we are.
A little confusing right? We need external validation combined with a dose of self-love. So how do you achieve this balance in everyday life?
In order to feel on top of the world and know that you can achieve your goals, you have to ‘believe’ in yourself – you have to learn to back yourself, each tiny step of your journey, from concept, to planning to execution – and stay focused. It is encumbered upon ourselves to reach the heights of our best life. We need to empower our belief system and surround ourselves with others that are like minded – powerful, strong and with that all important attitude of ‘I got this’.
Let’s consider Beyonce’s song, in 2011, ‘Who run the World’ – the song’s development was motivated by Beyoncé wanting to do something different: a mixture of different cultures and eras, a new sound, and a message which would give women strength. ‘Ruling the world’, is becoming the master of your world, which sits amidst the greater world and what can be your best life through your energy.
True power comes from smart choices – removing white noise and negative narratives from your circle, finding support with your tribe and immersing yourself in a ‘can do’ approach and attitude. Do you need motivation? Be honest with yourself and ask:
Do I want a better tomorrow?
If your answer is yes – than make choices that support your journey.
Go girl! You got this and be loud and proud about being the best version of yourself!
While the effects of injectables last up to six months, you will have to have them done on the regular, and that can cause some women to become immune to the effects, says Dr Vivek Eranki, founder and CEO of Cosmetique.
“Quite a few women develop an immunity to their wrinkle relaxing injectables and this reduces the effectiveness of the treatments over time. The good news is that there is a solution,” Dr Eranki said.
“It is hypothesised that the older generation of wrinkle relaxant injectables in the market have a higher number of complex proteins attached to the key ingredient. Over time, your body may register these complex proteins as antigens and form antibodies to it. This makes the doses less effective,” Dr Eranki said.
“Xeomin® is a newer alternative. The active ingredient, Botulinum Toxin Type A, is purified of the complex proteins. It is the only purified injectable available in Australia and is not so commonly known. This can be a great option for women finding themselves in this situation.”
According to Dr Eranki, the new product is similar to other injectables, in that the results of XEOMIN® also help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles in the areas around your eyebrows, forehead and eyes. The main difference is in how they are produced.
As a newer product on the market, Dr Eranki said people were often curious to know about how effective it is, as compared with other wrinkle relaxants. “The great news is that some studies show Xeomin® actually lasts longer than the other brands.”
As well as Xeomin® lasting longer, the results of it also appear earlier. You may see the effects of smoother skin in as early as just a couple of days after treatment, whereas with other injectables, it can take longer.
“As a society, we are all leaning towards things that give us more instant results, so XEOMIN® is a treatment we are seeing an increase in popularity for.”
“Amazingly, Xeomin® doesn’t just treat existing wrinkles, but even prevents against future ones from forming. These treatments actually encourage your skin to produce extra collagen, which is the protein responsible for keeping your skin looking plump and youthful,” Dr Eranki added.

Model-turned-agent Monique Jeremiah is taking bold strides to showcase diverse talent on the Gold Coast. We speak with Monique about Diversity Models, her success stories and how she’s driving change one photo shoot at a time.
Can you share with us the mission of Diversity Models?
We represent confidence, curves & culture – we want to challenge the existing modelling industry and encourage businesses to recognise the value of diversity in marketing and branding. We specialise in casting unique multicultural, curve and mature aged models aged 30 plus for print, social media and TVC campaigns. Our aim is to promote selfconfidence and cast models who are naturally beautiful, relatable and have an everyday appeal so that they resonate with customers of our clients.
How did you get started setting up an agency, and how did you bring initial talent to your books?
In July 2022 I started Diversity Models completely spontaneously, after many people were asking me whether I owned a modelling agency – in my spare time I was modelling on the side for the fun. However during Covid, I realised I truly enjoyed the networking, marketing and public relations side of modelling.
So, I created an industry-breaking agency where I managed models just like myself and gave businesses what they needed and lacked – faces of diversity. I recruited our talent through initially advertising on my own Facebook profile and then naturally I created a FOMO culture. Now we have such an amazing team of models which is growing!
How much of the fashion industry do you think is truly committed to using diverse models?
Personally I believe that the industry is still lacking diverse models and this is very evident on reality TV – I just came back from Farmer Wants a Wife and saw it first hand. Whilst filming, I was only 1 of 2 diverse faces on screen – the evidence is there, diversity needs to be included and not just tokenised.
What is your advice to a woman at any age who is keen to start modelling?
I would say it’s never too late to become a model – I entered the industry at 30 as a mature aged model. It is vital that you are already self-confident, have strong self esteem and can take rejection. Being an excellent team player and entering the industry with an open mind and no ego is essential, as it takes time, experience and
Age 66, Denmark-born, clients to date including Peppermint Pebbles, Jasmin Organics and Kazza’s Closet.
Maibritt has been an entrepreneur over the last 22 years in the construction and cleaning industry and wanted to follow her dreams of becoming a mature aged model. She is now having the time of her life modelling for local and online fashion, skincare and health food brands. She caught my eye as she has a classic European retro look with beautiful blonde curly hair and is extremely fit for her age.
relationship building to become excellent and known in this creative profession.
I look for natural beauty, unique cultural combinations and models who have taken the time to look after themselves mentally and physically as women. I love models who are highly team players, supportive of other women and have a positive personality.
What do you love about living and working on the Gold Coast, and do you feel consumers here are wanting even more diverse models?
I love living here as it is very relaxed, it is an entrepreneurs’ paradise and it is a great home base. I’ve been here 27 years. Consumers here want more diverse and natural models as they are tired of the typical Barbie doll plastic image of the past on the Gold Coast.
Monique shares with us some of her standout success stories.

Maybe we are all feeling a bit of decision fatigue, or maybe your style has completely changed since pre-pandemic. Either way, capsule wardrobes are a great way for you to mix up your look without spending a fortune. The basic idea of a capsule wardrobe is that everything matches with everything. While typically we see that as a lot of neutrals, use the clothes that you already own and love as a guide. If you never wear black, there is no need for a black blazer.
Speaking of black blazers, it seems we are all still under fashion icon Matilda Djerf’s spell, as suiting continues to be a major trend. Perfect for the fashion minimalist or maximalist. We’ve seen tailored trousers and waistcoats blow up in all fabrics, from more traditional suits to linen suits for a California-business look. The best part is that a three-piece suit can be broken up into hundreds of outfit combinations. But the easiest way to dip your toes in is to invest in one piece and build from there.
Despite all the Y2K minis that we have seen everywhere, this A/W season, maxi’s will be back. But instead of the long flowing bohemian maxis of past seasons, we will be seeing silk, satin and even denim skirts that fit closer to the body, hitting the floor. Although the length is longer, we still want to show off curves!
Tweed, boucle and classic plaids are on endless display this season. Luxurious fabrics and classic design, elevate your elegant look. Investing in capsule wardrobe staples or suiting in these timeless cuts will not only be on trend this season, but will transcend seasons. And with the increase in popularity of tennis-core and golf-core outfits, we are certain that country club chic is here to stay. For the Gold Coast, try incorporating oversized striped shirts, a classic straight leg jean and some loafers for the perfect “off-duty” look.
Whilst some may shudder at the thought of a “Canadian tuxedo” and bring on flashbacks of baggy denim with neon accessories and big hair, the key to this look is all in the styling. The key to pulling off double denim is the cut. Treat your denim as you would tailoring and ensure you have balanced proportions. An easy shortcut to get a similar look without having to worry about matching your washes, is to invest in a denim jumpsuit. Pair with a big tote and white sneakers for errands, or take to night by adding a bold lip and some gold accessories.
After the birth of her first child and only in her mid-30s, Gold Coast local Debra Balhatchet faced the unimaginable diagnosis of a brain tumour. Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter sits down with Debra to learn how this moment changed the trajectory of her life forever, and how she used this news to galvanize her travels around the globe as well as a new take on life.
Can you share with us what your life was like when your brain tumour was discovered?
I was 34 and pregnant with my first child. I was running a new Subway business with my then husband, being mum to my amazing step kids and busy with the business of being pregnant.
I started having problems with the feeling in my face and the hearing in my ear. It wasn’t until after I gave birth that it got really bad.
At first I went off to my GP and he referred me to a neurologist in Southport – his response was ‘things happen when you’re pregnant’ and ‘you’re probably hormonal and stressed’. Then he ordered an MRI to be done after I had given birth, but things got so bad that I brought the appointment forward and had one 2 weeks before giving birth.
What was your reaction to the diagnosis at that moment?
Finding out was horrible – the radiologist’s first question was “Do you have private health cover?” and it just went downhill from there. It sounds crazy but looking back I remember it felt like the doctor just told me "Do not pass go, do not collect $200". I was fit, I was healthy, I was in my 30s not 80s! My parents were amazing and have continued to be. My mum did all the hard work with my newborn and night feeds – I was put straight into hospital.
When did you get the travel bug and start exploring the world?
I’ve always loved to travel even prior to my brain tumour – I did really well with a property I had bought and sold plus I had broken up from a serious relationship so I thought “That’s it, I’m going to see the world!” The travel bug continued after my diagnosis (although I couldn’t travel for some time after my operation, it really knocks you about), and now I’ve visited as many different countries for as many years as I am old. I’m now over 40 and have visited over 40 countries!
As soon as I felt up to it, I took my kids to Europe for a month and it really helped me feel like the old me again. I am so blessed to have such a small bucket list because I really don’t know how long the bucket will last. Both travelling and medical dramas have really, really opened my eyes to what is important in life and changed the path of my future.
What is your advice to other women facing serious health issues?
I want other women to know they should trust their bodies. They know them. They live in them 24/7 – sometimes we can be hormonal – but we’re not stupid. Of course, in the wise words of Dory “Just keep swimming!”. Some days are tough and we can’t say a way out, but you’ve got this.
Health today is a challenge – my next surgery date is in May – thankfully not brain surgery, just fixing something else that went wrong as a result of a stroke after the brain surgery. I’ll be clocking up the visits at the hospital for the next little while – but that’s ok, I’m still here and that’s what matters most.
It’s often a very silent struggle – I never like to admit how broken I actually am, but that’s just my personality, I’m a fighter and a winner. Winning in my own eyes, that is! I don’t have a flash car or a waterfront house, but I have the love of my kids (step and biological), the love of my parents and the most beautiful friends possible.
“I’M A FIGHTER AND A WINNER, THAT’S JUST MY PERSONALITY!”
“I’M STILL HERE, WITH THE LOVE OF MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS, AND THAT’S WHAT MATTERS MOST.”

If ever there was a place to explore the quality of permanent camping in architectural form, it is on Minjerribah, North Stradbroke Island. A short ferry ride away from Brisbane, it is dotted with simple ‘weekenders’ or holiday houses built as boltholes for the nine-to-five crowd escaping the city. Just because you’re leaving the mainland behind, doesn’t mean you’re abandoning all style. The Baker Boys Beach House, designed to be shared by three families, is the epitome of beachside laidback luxury. Reminiscent of the beach shack vernacular, it’s suggestive of a bush camp tent, a black steel butterfly roof hovers above the deliberately simple box structure allowing light to permeate living spaces from high windows tucked just beneath it. Located on a very steep slope, the back of the house is anchored to the ground, where it is well connected to the adjoining bushland reserve, enjoyed from a sheltered sitting area featuring a firepit. Or chill out at the other end of the property, cantilevered to take full advantage of sweeping ocean views. Find more inspiration in Love Shacks by Susan Redman ($59.99).

While most people assume losing weight means cutting back on everything you love, but according to wellness and weight loss expert, Kitty Blomfield, that’s not necessarily the case.
In fact, according to Ms Blomfield, adding ice cream to your diet can actually help.
“Using my lived experience and learned expertise, I formulated a program to help women kick start their health and wellness journey and I called it the Eat More, Train Less, and Get Results 7 Day Challenge,” Ms Blomfield said.
“Starving yourself is not sustainable and your body shuts down,” Ms Blomfield explains.
“The only way forward is to achieve body transformation through improved metabolic functioning.
“I encourage women to eat ice cream every night. The key is balance, food composition and movement. Getting this right not only helps you to get the body you want, it also helps to solve a raft of other health and body issues, such as hair loss, painful periods and low sex drive, just to mention a few.”
Ms Blomfield’s passion for health and wellness started in 2015 when she decided to turn her life around and focus on holistic health.
“Just like so many other women, I had spent well over a decade yo-yoing blindly between periods of motivation and depths of despair. Between dieting and bingeing, I was never happy with my body. That is, until the stars aligned, and I met two very important people in my life,” she said.
“I met my now partner, Craig McDonald, and he taught me the importance of strength training and building lean muscle to achieve a toned and athletic-looking body. I also met Emma Sgourakis, who introduced me to a totally new way of nutrition. I learned that by supporting my metabolic health, I could achieve my body composition goals. She taught me what nobody else did: that carbs are not the enemy, that I could enjoy all the delicious foods I love and nourish myself and support my hormones.
“It improves metabolic health and by doing this women experience more energy, better moods, improved sleep, digestion, hormone regulation and long-term, sustainable body composition change.
Your body, your focus, your goals
It’s about more than just weight loss though.
“So much of what women experience every day is considered ‘normal’. But I’m here to tell you that it’s not normal to have poor sleep, painful periods or experience bloating.
“These are, in fact, generally a symptom of a down regulated metabolism. With our metabolic health assessment, we’ll help you pinpoint the key metabolic issues, so you’ll know what needs focus when you’re working on your health and body goals,” Ms Blomfield continued.
Increasing and maintaining adequate muscle mass is one of the most effective ways to keep body fat at bay and to improve overall health and fitness, especially as you age.
Your body is continually removing old bone and replacing it throughout all stages of your life. Peak bone mass (or bone density), which is our maximum bone size and strength is reached by around age 30.
Bone loss in women occurs fastest in the first few years following menopause and it continues as we age. For most women bone loss can be slowed through good nutrition and exercise.
You’ll strengthen your bones
Weight training doesn’t just train your muscles it trains your bones as well. Recent studies show that even moderate weights training twice per week can increase a woman’s strength by 30 to 50 percent.
You reduce your risk of injury
Building stronger connective tissues and joint stability is paramount for females.
Females post-birth have a wider pelvis which can throw out the correct alignment
of joints and bones. Without doing resistance training this can directly lead to orthopaedic injuries especially through the spine and pelvis.
You’ll have a healthier heart
Cardiovascular exercise isn’t the only exercise that’s good for your heart. Strength training can enhance your heart health too, studies have shown that people who performed up to 45 minutes of moderateintensity resistance training lowered their blood pressure by 20 percent.
You’ll burn more calories
As your muscle tissue tears when you place it under load, it then repairs itself after a weight session. Your muscles need food for recovery to regain strength. So, the more muscle you have, the hungrier you are. Research shows that resistance training is a proven method for increasing lean body mass and reducing body fat for women.
You become stronger mentally and boost your self-confidence
Women who strength train commonly state that they feel more confident and capable. Typically, because if coupled with good quality nutrition, it makes you stronger, leaner, more muscular and fitter which in turn makes you feel more positive about yourself. But aside from aesthetics it can also benefit you emotionally as endorphins are released which stimulates feelings of happiness.
You achieve that ‘sculpted’ look Contrary to popular belief, getting toned does not come solely from cardio! It comes from weights as well. Both men and women don’t just exercise because it’s good for their heart, it makes their bodies look more aesthetic also. While cardio has many benefits for your heart, it won’t help give you that tight and toned look many of us aspire to.
How much strength training do you need?
It is recommended that women do resistance training at least two days per week. Researchers say that postmenopausal women should partake in weights training or weight-bearing exercise three times per week (on alternate days). If you are new to resistance training, start training with a personal trainer a couple of days a week to ensure you learn correct technique etc. and work your way up from there.

Whether single, partnered, dating or somewhere in between, our sexuality as women can often take a backseat in life. We chat to leading sexologist and sex therapist Isiah McKimmie to discover how we can nurture our confidence and communication skills for a positive sex life at any age.
How does our sexuality evolve throughout our lives as women?
Our sexuality changes throughout our lifespan. Some people will find themselves more sexually confident at a later age, others may find that hidden inhibitions arise. It’s important to know that we can continue to have a thriving sex life throughout our lives if we make it a priority.
Do you find women often put their sexuality second with so many other responsibilities?
Absolutely. Women are often left to do the lion’s share of the housework and get judged more harshly for their
parenting and housekeeping. This adds to the stress and exhaustion women can feel and impacts their priorities. Additionally, numerous studies have shown that the more sexual a woman is perceived to be, the less she is perceived to be a ‘good mother’. This millennia old narrative can impact women’s identity and how they see themselves as a sexual being following having children.
How are Australian women getting in touch with their sexuality?
The more women know what they enjoy sexually, the better position they’re in to share this with a partner. In recent years, we’ve really seen a shift towards pleasure toys really targeted towards women’s pleasure and the introduction of audio erotica apps. Talking about sex openly and honestly is one of the most important factors to having great sex. It’s helpful to be able to talk about sex with a partner before you get into and while you’re in the bedroom.
Taking your time to enjoy solo sex can help you discover more about what you like and heighten your pleasure.
Isiah McKimmie –SexologistWhat are your top 5 tips for “getting behind the wheel” and driving your sexual experiences?
1. Make sex a priority.
2. Dissolve fear and shame around sex.
3. Improve your relationship with your body.
4. Learn to calm your mind.
5. Get great sex education.
Any myths you can bust for us around female sexuality?
I think the biggest myth I hear about women’s sexuality is that women have a lower sex drive than men. It’s really important to know that this isn’t always the case – in the right circumstances, women can have thriving libidos too!
