Sayer’s Just A Boy album was the first record my dad gave to my mum when they were dating, he used to play his songs on the guitar when we were little and my brothers and I grew to become fans ourselves.

I think all families, couples, friends have different songs, musicians, albums that takes them back to a particular time or place, that brings back emotions and feelings.

Music also makes a great gift, and with Father’s Day just around the corner, it’s one to keep in mind.

Music has its own special way of lifting spirits, providing strength, and bringing back memories in the most vivid of ways. I remember creating my own mixed songs cassette when I was a teenager, always finding the right song to suit my convoluted adolescent emotions.

Whenever my first family (my parents, my brothers and I) are together, we’ve always got Leo playing in the background, remembering a time when things were simple, and being together was a common occurrence.

Not much has changed and I still find tracks which resonate with my current experiences and outlook on life. These days though I’ll often pull out the Leo Sayer music when I need to centre myself, remember who I am, draw on the strength of my family, or take a trip down memory lane. Or just listen to some good music.

Random act of kindness — by Krysten Davis

I sincerely believe that we should try and make sure that people leave an interaction with us a little bit happier than they started. It does not hurt to be a kind person. I will always endeavor to make an interaction positive, and I will generally be pretty polite and positive. (Unless you’re a man boy on TikTok and I need to tell you what a numpty you are!)

Women of a certain age DON’T need performative charity, DON’T need condescending carnations and most definitely should NOT be filmed without their consent. We live in the age of ‘thirsty’ people looking to people in the online space to validate and appreciate them. I know I sound 100 but this is sooo sooo shallow.

The world is shiny and reflective, you often get back what you put out. Be kind, intentionally, randomly and often because you like doing it- not for the ‘likes’.

You know what ruins a random act of kindness and drives me absolutely bloody crazy…… It’s posting said ‘random act’ on your socials in order to achieve the praise of the many and adulation for your humble brag. Some tik tok tragics have actually gone so far as to set up and film their ‘random’ act of kindness in order to show the world how amazingly kind they are. This happened recently to a lady in Melbourne minding her own business when a man boy came and gave her flowers. He then posted this act to TikTok and it received 57 MILLION views! The woman in question was clearly not a spring chicken and the premise of the ‘kindness’ was that she ‘at her age’ probably wouldn’t have many people giving her flowers. The breathtaking arrogance and ignorance in this assumption leaves me lost for words (and this is unusual for me!)

I love a random act of kindness. Just doing something for someone, exactly the right thing, exactly as they need it. You both smile and head off into your day with a little warm fuzzy feeling and thinking the blue planet is not a bad place.

Anotherresearch.stellar moment was a stunning performance by Opera Queensland’s Irena Lysiuk. A Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University graduate, Irena even inspired several guests to partake in a waltz as she performed her final act!

An annual event of this calibre is made possible by the generous support of key partners, with this year’s Platinum partner Meriton Group, Gold partner Grand Medical and Bronze Partners, FB Rice, Triple M Gold Coast and of course, Griffith University, playing an essential role in bringing the ball to life. Guests were treated to a polished performance by Griffith University’s Young Conservatorium – accompanied by a spectacular firework show on the resort’s lawn. Channel Nine’s Gold Coast News presenter, Eva Milic, guided guests through the events of the evening as Master of Ceremonies. Guests heard from Griffith University Vice Chancellor, Professor Carolyn Evans and Institute for Glycomics Director, Professor Mark von Itzstein AO, as well as enjoying performances from comedian Judith Lucy and local GC band, McKenzie. Notable guests included Tom Derry AO, Chairman of the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF), and his wife Kristine. Through the ACRF, the Institute has been awarded $2.6 million in funding to establish the ACRF International Centre for Cancer Glycomics. Sid Caitlin, Director of the Bourne Foundation, attended with their foundation having graciously donated over $2 million in funding to the Institute to support the development of a novel cancer diagnostic, a state-of-the-art high-tech Nuclear Magnetic Resonance instrument and critical project funds to support childhood sarcoma

Saturday August 6th marked the annual Institute for Glycomics Grand Ball, a black-tie event to celebrate and raise much-needed funds for their groundbreaking research. Enjoy Get It Magazine’s wrap-up of the highlights from across the evening. With over 400 high-profile guests in attendance, the Institute for Glycomics Grand Ball 2022 was an unforgettable evening which offered the opportunity to come together for a very important cause. Hosted in the Grand Ballroom at the RACV Royal Pines Resort, guests enjoyed a delicious three-course meal, beverage package, live entertainment, a plethora of tantalising raffle prizes to be won. With a live and silent auction and an exclusive after-party - it’s no surprise that some attendees even travelled interstate for the jam-packed night.

The Institute for Glycomics would like to thank their event partners, community partners, supporters, donors, colleagues and guests who all helped make the night a truly grand success.

GET IT September 2022 12

The support of community partners, supporters and donors plays a crucial role in helping to support the Institute for Glycomics’ essential research and human clinical trials, and the evening raised over $1.8 million dollars which will go directly towards research into finding new preventions and cures for debilitating childhood diseases. A major high point of the night saw MC Eva Milic announce a monumental $1 million donation from valued supporter GC Value Pty Ltd. These funds support research into childhood cancers, virus-induced diseases, respiratory stress, malaria and more, and the focused work of the Institute will lead to the discovery and development of new diagnostics, drugs and vaccines to combat such diseases, providing hope for the future of our children.

Lab-grown

The growing popularity in lab-grown diamonds is infinitely better for the environment than mining. As we strive for a cleaner future and a cleaner environment, mined diamonds and the mining industry may be a thing of the past. Investing in your first lab-grown diamond may be a way for you to incorporate the environment into your decision. CTJ Bundall has the largest selection of earth grown and lab grown diamonds at Australia’s best prices. The team at CTJ are some of the best in the business of diamonds. To find your perfect diamond why not call into the Bundall showroom and see for yourself. ctj.com.au | Phone: 5538 3988

It has been long established that not only are diamonds forever, but they are also a girl’s best friend. We invest in diamonds throughout our life, whether it’s to symbolise the love between you and your partner, marking a symbolic moment in time, or treating yourself to something that gives you a daily dose of dopamine. The sparkle, durability and fire set them apart from the competition and make them desirable to all. But in recent years, the demand for lab-grown diamonds has been on the rise, begging the question, what is the difference between lab-grown diamonds and natural mined diamonds? How are diamonds made? Natural diamonds are made from carbon atoms that have been intensely compacted and exposed to high temperatures. Labgrown diamonds are made in the same way, but rather than being found deep in the Earth’s crust, they are created in a laboratory environment. Because they have the same chemical composition, there is no difference in the hardness between the two either. Diamonds are loved for their ability to add a bit of sparkle and fire without worrying about damaging your jewellery, meaning you can wear them carefree every day. A benefit to a lab-grown diamond, is that rather than taking a billion years or two to form, they typically take merely a few weeks. Ultimately, a diamond is a diamond! But how is the sparkle?

DIAMONDS ARE diamonds the ‘new’ girl’s best frienda girl’s best friend

Diamonds are adored by many for being a timeless classic to add a bit of luxury to every day. We wanted to know if it was possible to tell the difference between a lab-grown diamond and a natural diamond with the naked eye, and the short answer is no. Because they are made the same way, you will get the same quality of sparkle in your piece. The clarity and cut will also be of the same quality of a natural diamond. The quality also won’t change, the larger you go. Will they break the bank? The elephant in the room is the price tag. There is an enormous difference in price.

Other Considerations

In terms of getting the best value for money, lab-grown diamonds seem to be the preferred option. Sue from Ashmore says “‘We bought a 2.63 carat lab grown diamond from CTJ and literally saved tens of thousands of dollars” Not only does this bring you closer to bringing home your diamond, but it also means you can invest in the setting or quality of the diamond to make sure you get the piece of your dreams.

To take the stress out of changing habits. We tend to try and change our bad habits from a place of scarcity and “I’m not good enough”.

People have loved that the book gives them hope and takes the blame out of habit change. When you change from a place of curiosity and continuous improvement it closes the gap between who you are now and who you want to be.

TheTakingStress Out Changeof

5. What kind of steps can someone start to put in place if they feel they are falling victim to lots of bad habits in their life (sleep, eating, negative self talk?)?

I was an optometrist for 27 years. I’ve asked “which one is clearer?”

6. What kind of responses have you had so far to your book, and what’s next on the career horizon for you?

2. Can you give us a bit of a career snapshot, you’ve led a really interesting life with some fantastic clients.

I love helping people to take the stress out of change. I love coaching and helping people alter their mindsets, I want to keep doing that. One area I’m currently looking at is attention and how we are struggling to maintain focus. I want to help people with that.

Let’s face it, we’ve all got something we deem a “bad habit”. Luke Mathers, Leading stress and mindset coach and author of Curious Habits, talks with Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter about healthy shifts, making change and how his own career path has helped him understand the habits that bring out the best in us all

Procrastination and poor self-talk are two of the most common Curious Habits. The strangest one I’ve seen during COVID would have to people pulling away and not reconnecting especially if you are struggling. Part of the stress response is to release oxytocin which is supposed to pull us closer and find support. Lately I found the opposite is true. People who are struggling are pulling away. It doesn’t help, we need tribes.

1. Tell us about Curious Habits - what’s your mission for this book and what inspired it?

4. When do our habits usually form - is it during childhood or can we form them at all ages? Kids have really malleable neural pathways, they create new connections and learn quicker than adults. Thought habits that you develop as a kid will often be there for life. This is why changing long held beliefs gets more difficult as we get older. It’s most definitely possible to change habits when you are older. You just need to repeat the habit and notice the benefits of the new process or way of thinking.

As one of the original directors of Specsavers in Australia, I saw first hand the habits of good leaders and it was the difference between a good business and one that struggled with stress. I now work with companies, leaders, Olympians and elite athletes around the coin to try to take the stress out of change.

In Curious Habits, my mission is to take the judgement, blame and shame out of changing our habits. Let’s change because we want to and not because we have to.

6.5 million times. I think it gives me a unique appreciation for habits.

3. What are some of the most common habits you find most people struggle with?

4. Do you feel the Gold Coast has a good audience for vegan baked goods, and that even non-vegans are open to trying new desserts?

1. How did Pippa’s Pantry come to life?

3. What’s your signature “baking style”?

Girl boss, vegan baker extraordinaire and social media master Pippa Jane Blatch shares with us her secrets to the perfect recipe for business, baking and mixing it up in the dessert world.

2. What was the initial response to your products?

7. What’s your advice to other young women looking to start a similar business - what do you wish you’d known when you first started out?

I started my 100 per cent vegan cake business, “Pippa’s Pantry”, in October of 2017 when I was just 18! I did home economics, hospitality and visual art in high school so when I graduated I decided to try a vegan baking business instead of university. I really didn’t know what I was doing or what to expect but as a determined little girl boss I wanted to try!

5. Tell us about an average day in your life. My days are so varied depending on what events I have on that week! Sleep is definitely put on the back burner between Wed and Sunday as I bake all of these days. If I am hosting a Westfield Shopping Centre Pop-Up or delivering wedding cakes up or down the coasts

8. What’s the most unusual dessert request you’ve ever had?

I absolutely love changing it up at my pop-ups and markets! I don’t think I’ve ever done an event with the same menu twice! New and exciting cupcake flavours keep my amazing customers on their toes and coming to see me to avoid FOMO. I regularly do cupcake themes like Harry Potter, Ice Cream Flavours and always celebrate the classics, Valentine’s Day, Halloween and Christmas.

My Gold Coast market days at QLD Vegan Markets are always a mix of customers, vegan or not, who are keen to try my baked goods based on their fabulous taste! The Gold Coast market vibes are unmatched as the scenery, people and music make for such a great day out of the house (and kitchen!)

I get some super cool themes and designs to work with each weekend but my most bizarre bake would have to be a hens party cake I made at the start of this year! I don’t usually do male body parts however this design definitely broke the internet - the Instagram post of this cake reached 85,000 views and was shared over 2,500 times! I loved all of the comments and controversy it brought about.

I tend to work 7 days! Thankfully my business is my baby and I love spending every second of my day growing it.

6. How do you market your business?

18GET IT September 2022

You know what they say… “Love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life!” It’s so true. Be prepared to work hard, lose sleep and cry a little… or a lot! But nothing is more rewarding than being your own boss and the financial independence that comes with that.

I was given the opportunity to be part of the Sunshine Coast Vegan Markets in early 2018 and it was an unreal sell out day for me! I sold 500 cupcakes in under 2 hours which was just crazy and the encouragement I needed to quit my full-time job and focus on growing my business.

What benefits are derived from delaying gratification and not expecting it ‘now’?

Here are 5 simple take-away’s to help improve self-control and build good habits: 1. Remove temptation 2. Measure your progress – keep a journal and take note of what you are achieving 3. Self-control drives regulation in your day-to-day life. Self-control contributes to our health and well-being, both in the short term and in the long term, not only for ourselves but also within family units, relationships, and the dynamics of any interaction with Managingothers. and exercising self-control makes you happy, so ‘others’ have less influence and impact that can make you feel Studentsunhappy.who exhibited greater selfdiscipline had better grades, higher test scores, and were more likely to be admitted to a competitive academic program. When it came to academic success, self-control was a more important factor than IQ Scores – how often have we noticed that focus and concentration does achieve results even if the process was tough and stressful? Self-control during childhood predicted greater cardiovascular, respiratory, and dental health in adulthood, as well as improved financial stability as evidenced through various studies. With all this positive awareness of the benefits of self-control, perhaps it is time to start employing this wonderful tool we all have at our disposal.

Self-control is the ability to regulate and alter your responses in order to avoid undesirable behaviors, increase desirable ones, and achieve long-term goals.

Self Control

What does it mean to have self-control?

There are numerous health benefits connected to delaying gratification, as well as better goal attainment and positive life outcomes. Finding ways to distract yourself from temptation can help you strengthen your ability to delay gratification and ultimately give you a more sustained feeling of success and achievement that a ‘quick’ fix cannot offer.

Possessing self-control can be important for health and well-being and allows regulation, as evidenced through various Westudies.allcrave to have a little more selfcontrol and some of the common goals such as exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, being more productive, giving up bad habits, and saving money are just a few worthwhile ambitions that usually require self-control to accomplish and find that sense of achievement and satisfaction.

So, what is Self-Control and how do you go about achieving it? A variety of terms have been drawn on to explain self-control, including: discipline determination grit willpower fortitude

Delaying gratification or waiting to get what you want, is an important part of self-control. People are often able to control their behavior by delaying the gratification of their urges. For instance, you may want that fabulous dress and you might need to go without the extra drink after work or that dinner out on the weekend to be able to fund this purchase. To hold back, wait and save for the dress will feel quite exhilarating when you make that payment and realize, it was so worth the smaller sacrifices for the larger goal.

We welcome anyone who can swim 50 metres and is open to learning something new. Our youngest participants have been high school students, and we have had people in their 70s join a program saying they had always wanted to learn how to surf but never got the chance when they were younger! If someone isn’t a confident surfer, can they start at any level?

How did Waves of Wellness first come about?

Many people that join the program have never surfed a day in their life. We have trained instructors to teach you everything from how to pop up, to reading waves and ocean safety. You don’t even have to own a board or wetsuit, we provide everything.

Wellness

One of the driving forces behind bringing WOW to life, is to make therapy more accessible, more mainstream, and more socially acceptable. We have trained professionals who are also the learn-to-surf instructors - that’s why we call them our unicorns. We’re changing the way people learn about, access support and view mental wellbeing. We’ve now got our WOW surf therapy programs in four states across Australia and we’ve worked directly with over 2400 people.

We were first co-founded by Joel Pilgrim, an Occupational Therapist, and Cassandra Vujovich-Dunn, an epidemiologist and public health researcher in 2016. Joel took a clinical risk by taking a client surfing and had the most profound experience with him; connecting more therapeutically over that half an hour in the ocean than they had in the last three months of working face-toface in the traditional clinical setting.

What else does WOW bring in terms of ongoing support? We know the journey is so much more than

How does this kind of physical activity assist those experiencing challenges? Being immersed in an activity such as surfing is scientifically proven to support your wellbeing by helping you achieve a ‘flow’ state - a psychological term used to describe the feeling of being completely absorbed by one activity with the body hitting its prime - it’s a form of moving mindfulness meditation. This provides a unique opportunity to anchor to the present moment and find new perspectives.

Waves of Wellness Case Study Story Name: Hayley Iluka Age: 54

There’s nothing more rewarding than hearing that a WOW program “has saved my life” or “it’s changed my life”. And we actually hear this time and time again. We had one participant say that she could have easily been one of the yearly suicide statistics, and that completing a WOW program has contributed to her recovery. Hearing her story, and how being involved in our WOW 8 week surf therapy made such a positive impact in her life, makes our work so rewarding. What kinds of common mental health issues are you seeing, especially postCOVID? The pandemic has shown us that we are all susceptible to mental health challenges. I’m not sure if we’re seeing more issues, or if we are just better at talking about it and saying, ‘hey I’m actually not doing too great’. We hope it’s the latter but suspect that COVID has just exacerbated a problem that was already there. We’re hearing, especially from more young people, that they are not okay. One of the clear messages we heard coming out of the pandemic is how important community and connection to others is in boosting our mental health.. Do you think we will begin to see more unique ways of tackling experiential therapies like this?

Absolutely, there’s a whole movement happening around eco-therapy and it can take on many forms - the world is your oyster. Things such as hiking, gardening, rock climbing, and even forest bathing. There is much healing to be found in nature if we are willing to connect with it.

Hayley’s story: “When I heard about the WOW program, I thought: this is made for me. I felt stuck, I felt like I wasn’t going anywhere; and when you have anxiety and depression that is the worst place to be in, with nothing to look forward to. I was like, ‘This will be really good, you’ll have something to look forward to “Itevery Thursday’.”wasthefirsttime in many years when I had those really good endorphins, I felt confident, I felt safe with other people. I hadn’t had that in a long time. Doing the WOW program definitely kickstarted that for me.”

What has been some feedback to the program?

one session. We provide ongoing support and weekly resources to participants whilst they are completing our program. Additionally, we can connect participants referral services and links to further resources to support them beyond our program through our extensive network of community services, and wellness organisations. Many have connected with others in the program to continue their wellness and surfing journey togetheroften catching up for regular surfs and wellbeing check-ins.

Mother, teacher, breast-cancer survivor and all-round ocean-lover, Hayley had a long history of mental ill-health and has been “battling PTSD, anxiety and chronic depression” since her early 40s.

“Had I not done the program, I would probably still just be working and miserable. It was definitely a fork in the road life moment for me. Prioritise your mental health over everything else. This program will give you the opportunity to do this and it is a lot of fun. The good endorphins you get are life changing.”

For 70 per cent of the women we see, it’s consistent acne (they usually had acne prior to the age of 25 and continued on to experience it after). Around 30 per cent would have had teenage acne which completely resolved and then they start to break out in later life, or experience a completely new onset of breakouts.

The majority of the factors that play a part in acne in adolescents are at play in adults as Thewell.main

Absolutely - there is 100% a stigma attached to it, and the majority of our patients do fall into this age group, with acne having a significant impact on quality of their life.

There is a dark side to popping a pimple, not only does it lead to scarring and pigmentation, if the pimple is located in the “danger” areas of the face, or the “death triangle” (from the top of the nose down to the outer corners of the mouth), popping a pimple here does have low possibility of the infection reaching your brain and leading in some rare cases to much bigger infections or even thrombosis in your brain. (Authors note: Best to leave this to the experts if you have a tricky blemish!).

factors that contribute are pores becoming clogged by dead skin cells skin, leading to pooling of sebaceous secretions, bacterial colonisation and inflammation. In adult acne, consideration should be given to conditions causing excess oil production (menstruation, stress), skincare, makeup or hair products that can clog pores, medication and some dietary factors which can cause inflammation in the body.

1. How common is adult acne in women? For adults over 25 years of age, we see around 40-60 per cent of people experience it at some time, with 85 per cent of women suffering from it compared to 15 per cent of men in our practice.

3. What is your gold standard protocol for treating adult acne?

5. Do you believe adult acne still has a stigma surrounding it?

GET IT September 2022 22

Dr KondamudiVenu

Coming to severe acne, when general measure and topical measure are failing and leading to pustules or cysts and or any signs of scarring, a referral to dermatologist is required for potential oral treatment.

While you might anticipate clear skin once you’re past your teenage years, the reality is that a large percentage of women over 25 will experience adult acne. Get It writer and skincare enthusiast Holly Bartter talks to Dr Venu Kondamudi about the right approach to treating our skin as we age.

Prescription topical retinoids are a mainstay of acne treatment in the initial stages, that increase the cell turnover and thereby addressing the main concern of clogged pores. They come in various strengths and are usually applied once at night and can lead to dryness and peeling for the first few weeks.

2. What kinds of acne do you see in your female patients?

4. Can you tell us about prescription topical retinoids and medication like isotretinoin - when is acne severe enough to go for the oral treatment?

The most important part of treating acne in adults is to make sure there are no underlying systemic problems, so we tend to go on a hunt for other symptoms like irregular periods, gaining weight, hair loss and facial hair to make sure we are not missing any underlying conditions like PCOS.

It’s so important to get the right advice from skin experts to first know what you’re dealing with when it comes to your skin. Keen to get the current “best practice” advice for treating adult acne, I reached out to Dr Venu Kondamudi, founder and director of Skin Clinic Robina, to hear how he treats his patients.

6. Can you bust a myth for us about acne?

I’ve personally had a consistent interest in skincare from a young age - 10 step routines? I’ve probably tried it. New skin gadget? I’ve likely got it in my arsenal. While I love my skin today, it wasn’t always Afterthe case.Iturned 20, I noticed a new phase of breakouts that I found incredibly unpredictable. My “old faithful” astringent toners and clay masks of my teens didn’t seem to work - I got much better at spot concealing but I still dreamed about a time where I could happily go bare faced.

Decrease in testosterone. When we hit 30 years old, our levels drop by 1% a year (great, I am down 3% already). Testosterone can have an effect on a few things throughout our body with one of the biggest being our sex drives. With low levels our sex drives can drop and can also lead to erectile issues (something no man will talk about if it happens). We might also start to experience hair loss, even our facial hair won’t be as full as it once was. Another thing that can happen is a reduction in lean muscle mass. Testosterone plays a part in helping to build muscle so a reduction in this is going to affect the growth of the muscle.

• Train regularly. Lifting weights helps our body produce more testosterone to help build muscle. This is as a result of the strain we have caused.

• Sleep. Good sleep has been shown to help maintain testosterone levels. When sleep deprived, our levels can drop which then effects training schedules and overall mood.

• Prostate cancer. It is the most common cancer in elderly men and one that both my dad and uncle have had. Numbers have been increasing over the last 10 years, but thankfully the death rate has dropped due to new techniques used. Early detection is a must for this and as we get older getting checked by a doctor is essential.

Cancers (morbid, I know, but it’s something we must look out for)

Men – The Aging Process

• Testicular cancer. This tends to affect the young men between 18-39 years old. I remember shortly after university one of my classmates got diagnosed. It was quite a shock when you are so young. You typically associate cancer with aging, but clearly this is not the case.

• Bowel cancer. The third most common cancer and it effects both men and women, especially those over 50. Make sure if you are above 50 you get screened for this and utilise free kits via the post. Always seek medical advice from a professional if any of these are affecting you.

• Maintain a healthy weight or lose the excess. Men who are overweight tend to have lower testosterone levels than someone who isn’t.

Ways to combat this:

As guys we have it quite simple when we compare what women go through as they age from puberty and then menopause. Our body doesn’t change a great deal if we train regularly and eat well. But there are still a few things men are more susceptible to as we age.

According to Dr Eranki, CEO of Cosmetique Cosmetic Clinics, this has caused injectable addictions. Dr Eranki shares what’s causing the peak. Why are we seeing injectable addictions on the rise?

If undertaken properly, it should not be noticeable. This involves injecting small doses into the muscle to give the patient a more rested and relaxed look. Brows should look more defined, the eyes should look bright and lifted and the facial skin should appear more supple and smoother.

“We are seeing this trend in millennials especially. While injectables are useful as a preventative tool to reduce the onset of wrinkles, quite a few millennials are starting to take things too far. I blame social media and adverse influence from celebrities.”

“Recently, on the back of adverse economic news, the demand of injectables has spiked again. We put this down to the ‘lipstick effect’, coined during the dot-com crash of the early 2000s where customers increase their purchase of luxury items during the economic crisis to improve their mood,” Dr Eranki said. “But the problem is, people are becoming psychologically addicted to injectable treatments. Where injectables are over-done, people can look unnatural, and in some cases, they look frozen and puffed up.”

“The treatment itself only takes a few minutes. Patients are required to avoid lying down for six hours afterwards and to postpone exercise until the next day,” Dr Eranki said. “Good quality injectables usually lasts up to six months. The treatment slowly breaks down in the body and as the muscles slowly gain their movement again, lines and wrinkles begin to return. Over time, with more treatments, the wrinkles lessen.”

“If injectables are inserted in this location, it can move down toward the upper eyelid and cause and eyelid to droop. Again, less is more and only go to a reputable and experienced clinic.”

Dr Vivek Eranki TREATMENTS CAN BE HIGHLY ADDICTIVE

A frozen face also means too much has been used. If an eyelid is drooping, it means too much has been used or it has been injected near the orbital bone right above the pupil.

GET IT September 2022 24 Interest rates and inflation have caused demand for cosmetic injectables and fillers to rise.

“Administering the treatment involves injecting the substance into the muscle under the skin using a fine needle,” Dr Eranki

Demand for injectables is soaring

WARNING: COSMETIC

“Injectables are a medical procedure requiring high levels of expertise and training. When we undertake treatments, we assess each patient to understand their facial structure, unique features, expressions, and muscle patterns,” Dr Eranki said.

How much is too much?

“The ideal outcome is a subtle and natural look with movement in the face.

How are cosmetic injectables used in treatments?

“Facial anatomy is very important and undertaking treatments necessitates the need to not only hold the relevant experience and training, but to also have an aesthetic eye and well-developed understanding of the possible “Ifcomplications.treatmentis provided by an unskilled or unqualified provider, the outcome could be disastrous. When it comes to injectables, less is always more.

“Uneven or disproportionate facial features can mean there has been too much administered or it has been applied poorly.

How much is too much?

Dr Vivek says good injectors engage in honest conversations with patients to assess their aesthetic goals whilst also being conscious of balancing a patient’s preferences and overdoing it. “At Cosmetique, there have been a number of instances where we have just had to turn patients away,” Dr Eranki said.

“Patientsadded. feel a slight sting and over a period of two weeks the filler does its work relaxing the facial muscles so they can no longer contract causing wrinkles and lines. Over time, the skin becomes smoother in appearance, quality, tone and texture.

“It is commonly used for horizontal forehead lines and wrinkles around the eyes and between eyebrows.” How long do they last?

We visit The Calile Hotel for a taste of A-list luxury and fine dining to discover an escape to delight the senses

When you arrive at The Calile hotel in Brisbane’s James Street, the first thing you notice is the light. It’s a beautiful, diffused filter, sent straight from the islands of the Mediterranean and guaranteed to not only make you look good, but immediately transport you into holiday mode.

There’s another reason The Calile is so popular with the A-list: there’s little need to venture any further from the impressive entryway. Alongside the international menus, the Gunn-curated room service offerings and inviting, green-tiled heated pool with bar service, the hotel boasts a luxurious shopping experience right on the hotel’s doorstep. The stores are stocked with Aussie designers too. “It’s an oasis within an oasis,” said Lindsay. When the sunbathing, swimming, sipping and snacking becomes too much, it’s a short walk to the relaxing surrounds of your impeccably-designed room or for a relaxing treatment in the Kailo Medispa.

The likes of George Clooney and Julia Roberts recently enjoyed a long liquid lunch at the hotel’s Apollo Bar, sampling the delights created by chef Andrew Gunn and his wife Amelia. “That was a great experience,” said Food and Beverage manager Warren Lindsay of his afternoon sipping rose with the superstars. Clooney and Co aren’t the only A-listers to sample the delights of The Calile and its myriad of restaurants.

The next thing you notice as you venture into the pink-hued reception, flanked by arched doorways and muslin curtains, is that everyone looks like they’re a celebrity: both the guests and staff. Sunglasses and labels are on show here and for good reason.

Top hotel and food stays

You don’t need to be a celebrity to stay at The Calile, but you’ll certainly be treated as one while you’re there.

There’s the simple French fare served at the Lobby Bar, with a touch of chef Gunn’s mum’s secret spice recipe added to some of the dishes (don’t go past the omelette for a mouth-watering breakfast). “We’ve brought a new menu to the Lobby Bar that reflects who we are,” said Michelin-trained Gunn. “We’ve created a story here, with the food, people and music all telling their part.” It’s definitely a best-seller, with bookings necessary for meals and Friday cocktails in particular proving popular with the neighbourhood keen to taste the bite-sized offerings alongside the bar’s impressive cocktail list. There’s Hellenika, decamped from its Gold Coast location, the newly-opened Sushi room, the ever-popular Same Same restaurant or a taste of Italy at Bianca’s to choose from. The rooftop gardens provide many of the herbs used in the cooking, and there’s plans for beehives and soon to be installed solar farm, Gunn tells me.

The Gold Coast’s recently opened hotel also features some seriously lush dining at its Akoya restaurant. There’s no A-list snobbery here though. The service is down-to-earth and friendly, from the smiling receptionists to the eager-to-please staff at the Apollo Bar. Rooms are minimalist but lavish, in that Mediterranean way: think luxurious linens, soft pinks (which make everyone look like they’ve used an Instagram filter) and rounded balconies for sunset drinks or people-watch those swimming below.

The face of tech is changing, and Gold Coast based business Desygner is welcoming tech employees from all walks of life. We spoke with founder & CMO Mariana Aguiar to discover why the GC might just be the next Silicon Valley, and how to get started if you’re keen to step into this career space.

7. Tell us about some of your team at Desygner and how they spend their free time.

I would say to make a list of their transferable skills and craft a resume that showcases the most relevant skills for a technology company. I would also recommend attending network events to get to know the people in the industry and reaching out to companies even if they do not have a position open yet. Tech companies always need good people and you increase your chances of getting noticed if you get there before they advertise the role.

32 GET IT I PROFILE GET IT September 2022

People normally imagine that tech is a place for introverted people that are on a computer 24/7. Our team is very diverse, in age, nationality, gender, and also hobbies. We have skydivers, surfers, box fighters, you name it. And we love that people have passions that do not necessarily involve technology.

6. For a woman looking to get into tech but not sure how to start, what is your advice?

1. Tell us about Desygner, how did it first get started? Desygner started because we were not designers and were frustrated with the process around it. We all had been in different businesses and it was always difficult to make small changes to a file without spending a lot of time and money.

A lot of our developers moved to the GC because of the lifestyle. Many of them are surfers and love the ocean. In the office’s day-to-day, people are able to focus on

4. Is it a generally more maledominated industry - and is this changing?

Generally there are more male developers in the job market, but the gap has been decreasing over the years. We now see many more women applying for development positions than we saw when we first started in 2016.

Most business skills can translate into a career in tech. Technology companies are not just their code, but also a product that needs to be marketed and a business that needs to be managed. And because of that, there is a big range of professionals that will be hired to bring their skills to the team, including design, sales, marketing, human resources, accounting, and so on.

So we decided to change that. We were initially 3 founders, Alex Rich from a tech management background, Sayan Bhattacharyya from a tech infrastructure background and me, from a marketing background. We then recruited another 2 co-founders, Ignacio Diaz for web development and Alex Goloskok for app development.

Oh, we have many interesting profiles at Desygner. Maheva is part of our product team and a martial arts fighter. One of our tech leads, Katya, is an avid international traveller and motorbike rider. Luis, one of our front-end developers, skydives every weekend (and once even took us all to join him). We also have a big group of surfers and a big group of paddle players in the office. And the list goes on and on!

The New Face of Tech on the GC Sun, Surf & Tech:

5. What kind of skills can people translate into a career in tech - it’s no longer just coding experts I imagine?

what they need to achieve whilst enjoying a stunning lifestyle and climate. When we first started, some investors advised us to move to Silicon Valley or a bigger city such as Sydney or Melbourne for easier access to funding and staff. We chose to stay on the Gold Coast, and that is a decision we will never regret, as we found amazing people to be part of our core team.

3. What are some misconceptions about the kind of people who work in tech, can you bust some myths for us?

2. Why do you think tech talent is drawn to the GC?
