LETTER FROM

Kathleen Editor

ne of my favourite authors, Elizabeth Gilbert, once wrote about how the women she loved and admired for their strength and grace did not get that way because things 'worked out' for them, but because things went wrong, "...and they handled it. They handled it a thousand different ways on a thousand different days, but they handled it. Those women are my superheroes.” With this month’s issue on adversity and women in focus – coinciding with International Women’s Day on March 8 – I instantly recalled this quote and began thinking about those women in life who are my superheroes. Friends who are young single mums and caretakers, friends studying to give back to the world, friends working in male dominated industries and my mum, who is fiercely loyal and epitomises being a strong woman. Whilst I am a huge fan of seeing women in the spotlight embodying feminism, from Margaret Atwood’s legacy to the likes of Emma Watson leading a new generation of feminists into the future, what inspires me most is the homegrown actions of women who are paving our way to parity. Those who put forward other women’s CVs, those that support their friend’s business and those that callout everyday sexism when they see it. Everyday acts of sisterhood aren’t always monumental though, sometimes they are in the little things we do to lift one another up – like your gym buddies encouraging you to love your body despite societies’ pressure (and indulge in your penchant for afternoon tea on the odd occasion). It’s all about society as a whole working together to achieve equality. So, Get it girls, call the superheroes in your life, pop that bubbly, give yourself a toast and pat on the back for how far you’ve come and jump into the inspiring reads this month. Here’s to the women raising families, running businesses, working two jobs and living off instant noodles to chase their dreams in the big city. May we always lift one another up and raise our girls to do the same.

''For me, it’s either enjoying an Irish coffee, a gym session, devouring a great book, partaking in some retail therapy or taking a moment with loved ones.''

"I can't go past sitting out the back at 'Hart's Bar', overlooking the pool and our lovely valley views, with a chilled glass of pinot grigio and listening to some cool tunes."

he most honest and candid conversation that I have ever had in my entire life was with a total stranger 10,600km above sea level in a plane - and it gave me the greatest joy and sadness at the same time.“Why?" You may ask. Because the woman I was speaking to didn’t judge me nor question my voice or criticise my opinions – she simply had no reason to, because to her I was a complete stranger and with me, she could be her own self too. We were two perfect strangers free to ‘just be’ and free to just ‘listen’. Besides, we never really had much choice in the matter with nowhere to go for hours and hours… and the only other person in our row of seats spent his time snoring and letting off an occasional fart, which wouldn’t have been so bad if we had have blocked our noses. But we didn’t... so it was bad! I like to think of myself as an individual; but I never realised just how much I conformed to friendships or opinions or ideas until that day. I met the 'woman in blue' who I nick-named Ginger (yes, she had red hair), on a 14-hour flight to Dubai. Seven hours in, and I was bored out of my brain. Believe me, there is a definite limit on how many movies you can watch, or toilet breaks you can take without eventually going cabin crazy.Think Looney Tunes on steroids kinda crazy! My salvation to the utter boredom was Ginger, seated next to me in 18D. Dressed top to toe in a blue velour Juicy Couture number and smelling like Chanel Mademoiselle, she was travel glammed to the max. And she said hello, to me. And I said hello back… oh the start of a beautiful friendship… cue the violin! Ginger and I took over the skies! We spoke. We really, really spoke and we told each other things that you would never repeat to your closest friend. We confided in each other about our inner fears. We laughed with each other about our failures. We complained about men or lack thereof, work and life. We dreamed about our futures and goals. Nothing was off limits. Not a damn thing! Honestly, it was terrific. It was a very rare moment in my life that I actually felt ‘heard’. And it took a woman who was as worlds apart from me as chalk is to cheese to make me feel that way. That’s when I realised that life on the ground had become a little too fast-paced to stop, really talk to your friends and appreciate each other. We ask, ‘how are you?’ instead of ‘how are you?’ we listen to reply – not to hear. Women should be listening and supporting each other not judging! Lifting each other up, like a good bra (we all need a little Victoria Secret in our lives). Ginger and I did that. We bonded, and all we had in common really was jetlag. As the flight touched down on a dusty runway in Dubai, we said our goodbyes, gave each other a little hug and became perfect strangers once more. A happy end to a genuine friendship. Sigh... I’m going to miss that chick.

Behind The

Unhappy Smile

Tracey Horton, author of The Unhappy Smile, Gold Coast grandmother and international award winner speaks to Get it’s Kathleen Loxton about her powerful journey from hopelessness to hope

March 2019

imagined myself the sad, lonely drunk girl in the local pub, looking 60 at 30 and I gave myself five years or I would quietly just take my life - in that five years I found the keys I have put in my book and I am now happily married 32 years, having raised four incredible daughters. I am living proof you should never write someone off, while there is breath there is hope.” It was Tracey’s life experience that led her to write The Unhappy Smile, where she bravely shares her personal account that previously had only been shared with her closest of friends. However, there is no self-pity there, and her compassion for others and the strength of her resolve shines through. It’s Tracey’s courageousness and her support of those experiencing such abuse, that is the driving force behind her work. Tracey spoke of the very night it all came about, saying,“I remember clearly the night I knew this book had to be written. Dinner was as usual - my four daughters plus extras, lots of food (that’s the Polynesian way), laughs and love – and one of my daughter's friends helped with dishes afterward and opened up about her life in a home full of domestic and sexual violence, she was so sad and confused, it was like meeting myself. Photo: Lauren Van Herk

efore all her success, Tracey had been through a 20-year journey from brokenness to becoming whole after years of abuse and putting on an unhappy smile. Tracey was born into a family full of domestic and sexual violence, her father was a schizophrenic with five personalities and her mum was so beaten down that she was emotionally and mentally absent. When Tracey was 12, she lost her home in a fire started by her father; now precious few photos remain of those early years. Though Tracey put on a brave face, it masked what was going on behind closed doors. Her father began abusing her mother (quickly followed by a domestic abuse warrant placed on him by the police), and things went from bad to worse while she was trapped in an environment of alcoholism, violence and abuse. This understandably took its toll on Tracey as a young adult, and tragically there was little place she could turn to for help at the time. Tracey explained,“By the time I was 14, I had been sexually abused by 12 different men and no one cared. At 18 I was told by a psychiatrist that I would be unable to contribute to society and should be medicated.” Tracey recalled of that moment, “Something snapped that day as I

By the time I was 14, I had been sexually abused by 12 different men and no one cared.

12

That night I cried myself to sleep and I knew I owed it to her and many others to show them – the story isn’t the important part, it's who you become through it that counts.” It’s clear that this message and Tracey’s journey has connected not only with those around her, but people on a global scale. At the end of last year, Tracey attended The Women Economic Forum in New Delhi, India, the largest global gathering of female entrepreneurs and leaders worldwide, where she won the prestigious Exceptional Woman of Excellence Award. Tracey described the event as,“…a strong heart-filled event that champions the belief that women are a very important part of this world and have a responsibility to contribute and make a change. To be given the award was the single most powerful moment for me. I was on stage telling my story, looking out on a sea of Indian women who I knew shared much of my hurt, to see them clap and honour me, many thanking me afterwards, was such an emotional, life-changing moment.” What does Tracey want us to take away from this? “Firstly, that it is time to talk, address and change our tolerance toward domestic and sexual violence worldwide, it’s enough now. Secondly, that there is hope, if you don’t get killed through the domestic or sexual violence, then there is a healing and a way out.” According to the Government’s report Family, domestic and sexual violence in Australia, 2018, here in Australia, "One in four women and one in six men have experienced emotional abuse by a current or previous partner. Furthermore, one in six women and one in 16 men have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by a current or previous partner". Lastly, "One woman a week and one man a month were killed by a current or former partner in the two years from 2012–13 to 2013–14. " The ABC added to these findings, reporting in November 2018, “Research clearly shows the behaviour of victims has little bearing on the likelihood of domestic violence in intimate relationships. Domestic violence can happen to anyone, regardless of age, race or socioeconomic status.” A key message in helping to change these numbers, is speaking out against such abuse. It was once said by Tracey, “Everyone has days where they can’t smile, but we live in a culture where we’re meant to smile every day. Sometimes, in people’s lives they mask that. That’s why I chose that title, because for a lot of my life it was a big mask. Now I live my life authentically, and when I smile, I mean it.” Tracey will continue spreading her important message and carrying on her vital work, whilst upholding her integral approach to this topic. Currently, Tracey is self-published despite offers, and for every copy of The Unhappy Smile purchased, she donates two copies to shelters and those in need, who have suffered sexual, physical and emotional abuse. What’s more, this is the first book of three to be released. She described,“Once I settled that I was going to write it, I then worked out what I wanted it to be — honest but not dishonouring, raw but full of hope and an instruction on how to heal and not let the story be you.” While Tracey would love to be in contact with her parents, sadly that’s not the case today. It’s important for Tracey to focus on the good, and let old wounds heal while dealing with her history. Her connection to her partner, four children and eight grandchildren is a powerful bond that keeps her strong, and what has happened in the past doesn’t define the direction they are heading. The way Tracey leads her life is a shining example of courage that motivates all around her. This incredible woman left us with an inspiring and poignant remaining thought,“I hope they know their worth, that no man or woman has the right to hurt or harm another. I hope they look at me and say,‘If she did, I can’. My advice, never protect the one hurting you – no one gains from false protection like that and never forfeit your hope to become more than the story, to heal, to pick up the pen (figuratively) and write your own ending, because you truly can be free.” For more information, and to purchase Tracey's book, visit traceyhorton.com

That night I cried myself to sleep and I knew I owed it to her and many others to show them – the story isn’t the important part, it's who you become through it that counts.

GET IT I SOCIAL MEDIA

YouTube is the New Boob Tube Welcome to 2019, where little girls chase subscribers and selfies, not Barbies and boys, writes Get it’s Hayley Bogaard

here reaches a point in every woman’s life where she utters that pertinent phrase and realises, with utter dismay, she is, well … old. “Back in my day…” The times may have changed, so too has the technology, but the essence of growing up remains the same, if not just slightly disfigured by selfies, subscribers and Shawn Mendes. YouTube is the new boob tube As young girls, we faced many obstacles. Finding a pocket big enough to fit our Walkman, desperately keeping our Tamagotchi alive and printing out directions on an actual piece of paper before leaving the house. Oh, and the perpetual battle to keep your trendy new Supré boob tube up over your – um, well – non-existent bosom. Never mind that your cleavage was more mosquito bite than Pamela Anderson – Britney Spears wore a boob tube, so you wore a boob tube, damn it! We were forever hiking them up as we rode our bikes to our best friend’s house and played in the street. Those of us who were a bit craftier tried tape or even a glue stick (spoiler: they never worked). It was a rite of passage and we wore it like a badge of honour. The battle to ‘keep it up’ hasn’t changed but the object of our frustrations certainly has. Welcome to 2019 where YouTube is the new boob tube. Kids these days are scrambling for innovative ways to keep up their subscribers, views and watch times. Children as young as five years of age are forging enviable careers on YouTube as toy reviewers, influencers and entertainers. They don’t care about their new boob tube slipping, but they do care about their audience metrics dropping. I mean, who cares about a little nip slip when you’re being paid thousands to post videos of playing with toys and looking cute? March 2019

The comment section is the new backseat of the school bus There were some things that we just intrinsically knew as kids. And one of those things was that the cool kids sat on the back seat of the bus. No questions asked. And by the time you’d paid your dues and reached that elusive throne, you realised it was the epicentre of preteen debate. The boys squabbled with each other over whose Razor scooter was faster, the girls threw pointed barbs at who had the prettiest hair, and the boys and the girls fought each other over who was the superior gender. It taught us tenacity, conflict resolution and pride. It was innocuous, innocent and the centre of our young lives. These days, the backseat of the school bus is a buried throne. In its place rules a far more sinister and malicious sovereignty: the comment section. From personal pages to celebrity accounts, the comment section has become the new battleground for debate. However, far from the innocent teasings of a prepubescent boy, the anonymity, which the online world affords us, has laid way for far more injurious parley. We battled the boys for the backseat and kids these days battle faceless adversaries with keyboards at the ready. And where we used to address the conflict with an intense, sweat-inducing, breath-holding round of rock-paper-scissors, kids these days are far more attuned with the less playful actions of Report-Block-Delete. Instagram fan accounts are the new bedroom wall posters The obsession with heart-throb teenage actors and bad boy musicians with impossibly glossy hair and mega-watt smiles is nothing new. We didn’t have Justin Bieber or Shawn Mendes but let me tell you, we had Heath Ledger and Leonardo DiCaprio and that was 14

everything a girl could need. We would race out every month to buy the latest Girlfriend,Beauty Mirror, $7, Dolly or Seventeen magazines and flip straight kmart.com.au to the poster section to see who was featured. We’d carefully tear it from the seams and, like a curator of modern art, meticulously find a place on our bedroom wall for it. Every night, we slept with the likes of Josh Hartnett, The Backstreet Boys and Chad Michael Murray – well, sort of. And those that didn’t make it on the wall, made it to the cover of our schoolbooks under a layer of clear contact paper.Yes, you’d better believe that Jesse McCartney was truly the person who got me through Year 8 Biology (sorry Mr Jones, but it’s true). Fast-forward to 2019 and teenagers these days are just as devoted (cough, obsessed, cough), but they’ve swapped posters for posts and schoolbooks for cover photos. Enter: Instagram fan accounts. These are social media accounts made by star-struck celebrity aficionados. Everything from Google images to conceptual content, taking celebrity photo shoots, editorials, and personal images and transforming them into creative posts with the aid of skilful editing techniques. Are they clever? Absolutely. But did these kids do the real hard yards, trolling through the pages of every teenage magazine, carefully tearing the pages so as not to rip them and then curating your wall so that Justin Timberlake’s platinum spikes didn’t clash with Gwen Stefani’s blonde hair buns? No, they did not! So, you can keep your fan accounts kids, because will Ashton Kutcher be there on your notebook to help you through Ms Clarke’s long division maths lesson? No, no he won’t.

It was unexpected but incredibly motivating, and it was lovely to win the award for what value I’ve added over the last 18 years – my father was so very proud.” Cheryl credits the hard work, love and support of her family and employees as a key ingredient in the company’s success. It’s an important brand ethic that every member of Morlife understands the why behind what they’re doing. “This is an integral part of March 2019

creating a great company! It also helps to surround yourself with people that are skilled at what they do, and those that complement your weakness’s,” says Cheryl. It truly is a family operation, with her loved one’s chipping-in to help when Cheryl is away. Maintaining that work-life balance is incredibly important to her, as is her supportive family – her father saying,“We should all be taking notes from Cheryl now.” If starting your own business is something you’ve been thinking of, or even working on currently, Cheryl had some very wise advice:“First of all, I believe you should start a business around something you are passionate about – there’s no point if you haven’t got your heart in it! Secondly, you need a lot of patience and persistence along the way. Lastly, always keep looking at different ways to make things work, be flexible and learn from setbacks. Getting back up after you’ve been knocked down is a learning process.”

children and aiding in organising more than 150 events - which raised over $800,000 for charities – she is a natural giver. Dale explained, “I love nothing more than seeing a smile on a child’s face we’ve helped.” What encourages Dale throughout accomplishing this work is how the business community on the Gold Coast, and the families in the community too, rally together to do good for others. It’s all about being selfless and putting others in need first. Having been through health problems herself, Dale understands how imperative it is to know others are there and you’re supported in that situation. “I’m a glass half full type of person, and really strive to live a positive life. You’ve only got one life, so you’ve got to live it to the fullest!” Previously, Dale won the 2017 International Women’s Day Award for Leadership in the Community and was a semi-finalist in the 2017 Women in Business Awards. Dale was also chosen as a Queen’s Baton Bearer for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games! This has led to her winning the prestigious Community Dedication and Social Justice Award at the 2018 Gold Coast Women in Business Awards. Dale said of the event, “I was so humbled and felt very privileged. It was a fantastic day anyway, just being in the room with all these incredible Gold Coast women. Everyone, the nominees and winners, got along so well – it was such a celebration of everything we’ve accomplished!” Her advice for those wanting to get involved with charities? “Just do it!” She advises researching the causes that you are most passionate about, connecting with charities that match your beliefs and then simply picking up the phone to see how you can help. Moving forward into 2019 and beyond, Dale hopes to inspire young Gold Coasters to get involved in charity work and continue undertaking her important duties. Currently, she is helping raise funds for a double-lung transplant patient and her family, so the young patient can live her dream of seeing the snow for the first time.

Dr Peta Stapleton: winner of the Innovation and Technology Award eta is a well-respected member of Gold Coast’s society and a cherished part of the academic community, who has built her career on a foundation of giving back to humanity and top-class work in her field. Her passion and expertise lie in the areas of: eating disorders, obesity, adolescence and women's health, lap-band (bariatric) surgery, complementary and alternative medicine/integrative medicine, energy psychology, and health psychology. She is active in researching the effectiveness of energy psychology techniques for food cravings and is now Associate Professor in Psychology at Bond University. A career path was forged by Peta at an early stage, when she started volunteering after finishing university – creating supportive environments for those suffering with eating disorders. Fast-forward to today and she has served as President of the Eating Disorders Association of Queensland numerous times and is the founder of the Gold Coast Eating Disorders Association. She explained, “I look back now and think I do believe in specialising and niching yourself – become the go-to person. Become very knowledgeable and make those connections in your career.” The Innovation and Technology Award reflected Peta’s recent work leading world-first randomized clinical trials investigating the effectiveness of a new and innovative treatment option for food cravings in overweight and obese adults known as EFT, Emotional 17

Freedom Techniques or ‘Tapping’ – a form of phycological acupuncture that relieves symptoms by tapping on various body locations. Reminiscing on the day of the awards, Peta said, “It was a real surprise, and I don’t say that lightly! As an academic I look at all these incredible women running businesses, and for them to recognise me at a different level - I was touched by that. Everyone deserves to be there. Now I just want to give back to them and implore women not to hold back from their accomplishments and encourage them to enter in awards like this!” So, how does Peta do it? Her natural superpower is her organisational ability, “… I still use a paper and pen diary. I also ensure I have days clear too, which is when I do meditation, yoga or running (I train for marathons to keep myself motivated). It’s important to practice what I preach regarding health strategies. Finally, if you enjoy what you do, it doesn’t feel like work.”

Naomi Spies: winner of the Business Achiever Award aomi is a Gold Coast staple, and an admired mentor and boss at her company Ruby Communications; the renowned media relations, social media event management and corporate communications agency. Naomi’s PR prowess has aligned with Ruby’s success, stemming from bringing international experience from places like London, to the Gold Coast, with an emphasis on company culture. Naomi explained, “Looking after our people is the most important thing. We have a great company culture, ensuring we enjoy activities together, a Ruby retreat throughout the year and even a puppy crèche! At Ruby, professional development and training is also paramount.” The philosophy behind Naomi’s take on business? “We’ve maintained a lot of our clients for many years, because we always strive to go above and beyond client’s expectations to over deliver on campaigns. There’s so many brilliant companies out there, and today more is expected of us to deliver.” This approach to her work and industry secured Naomi the prestigious Business Achiever Award, a moment when it was commented of Naomi’s reaction to winning, “I’ve never seen someone so surprised to win an award in my life!” Naomi added, “Karen Phillips (Executive Director of The Women in Business Awards of Australia) mentioned at the awards how women can have this idea of ‘I’m not good enough’ but it’s important to put yourself out there. I don’t think you need to start off a business with the aim of a $100 million turnover, but just being selfsufficient by paying your own salary could be a start. It’s then an achievable goal, they just have to take the leap.” Her advice for those wanting to make their mark in the world of PR is a practical approach: “I highly recommend students gain experience with as many work placements before finishing university as they can. Though we have hundreds of applications, we usually hire exceptional interns. Get that experience under your belt and add to your skill set – in particular photography, graphic design and videography.” Naomi keeps up with the many different roles in her life by remembering, “I’m a mum to two little boys as well, so I’ve learnt it’s important to focus on what’s in front of you. When I’m at work I purely focus on work, and when I’m with family I focus on them. Yoga and Pilates is a great outlet for me too, as is having conversations with friends that don’t revolve around work.” March 2019

GET IT I CAREER

The realities

of a modern-day

JOB INTERVIEW Ex-recruitment consultant and Get it staffer Hayley Bogaard lets us in on a few secrets to nailing your next job interview. nce upon a time, job seekers eagerly scrolled the classified section of their local newspaper, circling their dream job in a bright red marker. They meticulously folded their CV, licked the envelope shut and with a hope and prayer, popped it in the bright red post box. Fast-forward to 2019, and we pick up our phones, open an app and – still with a hope and a prayer – hit the submit button. The game has changed but your career aspirations don’t have to. If you know deep down, that you’re not in the right job it’s time to make finding your dream career a priority. And the first step in that process is preparing yourself for the modern-day job interview because let me tell you, it’s a jungle out there.

It all starts with your CV

Your CV literally introduces you to your future employer, so you want to make a good impression. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to how to write and structure your CV as this will change with your experience and the position you are applying for. It is, however, important to make sure your CV stands out. Use a pop of colour, a professional headshot or a simple design to stylise your CV – this is a clever and subtle way to create a personal brand before you even meet your potential employee. But don’t go overboard with graphics and flowery fonts – you’re going for Michelle Obama, not Miley Cyrus…

Social media checks

What you’ve heard is absolutely true: employers and recruiters really are looking at March 2019

your social media pages and as a self-confessed FBI-level stalker, let me assure you that we will find you and any of your dirty laundry! Make sure all your accounts are set to private, your profile images are appropriate and you aren’t engaged with any groups or pages that may be offensive to potential employers. While you’re at it, take a moment to update your LinkedIn profile, as many employers will look there as a professional reference source. Remember, your identity online is your second self so make sure it is as polished and professional as you are!

What you wear says it all

You would think that this one went without saying, but you’d be surprised at how many people still get it wrong! While the basic principles still apply – dress nicely, iron your shirt and brush your hair – the style of dressing for a job interview has evolved with the business climate. With such a range of jobs in the market – from corporate to creative – it’s important to dress for the role you are interviewing for. If you are going for a more creative role – like graphic design, advertising or marketing– then add a bit of flair to your look with a patterned blouse or some fun accessories. This is a clever way of portraying your personal brand and style before you’ve even said anything. Just make sure you keep it clean and appropriate!

The real question?

I’m going to let you in on one of the biggest secrets in the recruitment world – when asked what your weaknesses or areas for improvement are, they don’t actually care! Well, that’s not entirely true, they do care, but they 18

aren’t really concerned with what you answer, so much as how you answer. These tricky and often uncomfortable questions are simply a tactic to see how well prepared you are and how well you react under pressure. The truth is, by the time you reach the interview stage, they will have read your CV, stalked you online (see aforementioned social media checks) and have a fairly solid understanding of your professional background. What they are really interested in now is how you present yourself and how you perform under pressure. Do your best to relax, be confident and let your personality wow them!

Do it your way International career strategist Zoe B, founder of Simple Life Strategies and the ‘Find a New Career in 30 Days’ program says that finding your dream career really starts with getting to know yourself better, identifying your own values and strengths and then crafting a career that also aligns with the kind of lifestyle you want to live. Zoe said there are various career paths worth considering, if you haven’t already. “Entrepreneurship huge right now. Anyone can start their own service based business with just a laptop. Online education is also trending big time, so if you have a skill and can teach it online, then you have a blue sky business opportunity. Coaching is also one of the fastest growing industries with life coaches, health coaches and peak performance coaches making lucrative careers all over the world.”

before I tell your mother you're dead

Dr. Louis M. Profeta, an emergency physician practicing in the US, reveals why he checks dead patient’s Facebook pages before telling their parents of their death t kind of keeps me human. You see, I’m about to change their lives — your mom and dad, that is. In about five minutes, they will never be the same, they will never be happy again. Right now, to be honest, you’re just a nameless dead body that feels like a wet bag of newspapers that we have been pounding on, sticking IV lines and tubes and needles in, trying desperately to save you. There’s no motion, no life, nothing to tell me you once had dreams or aspirations. I owe it to them to learn just a bit about you before I go in. Because right now, all I am is mad at you, for what you did to yourself and what you are about to do to them. I know nothing about you. I owe it to your mom to peek inside of your once-living world. Maybe you were texting instead of watching the road, or you were drunk when you should have Ubered. Perhaps you snorted heroin or Xanax for the first time or a line of coke, tried meth or popped a Vicodin at the campus party and did a couple shots. Maybe

you just rode your bike without a helmet or didn’t heed your parents’ warning when they asked you not to hang out with that ‘friend,’ or to be more cautious when coming to a fourway stop. Maybe you just gave up. Maybe it was just your time, but chances are…it wasn’t. So I pick up your faded picture of your driver’s license and click on my iPhone, flip to Facebook and search your name. Chances are we’ll have one mutual friend somewhere. I know a lot of people. I see you wearing the same necklace and earrings that now sit in a specimen cup on the counter, the same ball cap or jacket that has been split open with trauma scissors and pulled under the backboard, the lining stained with blood. Looks like you were wearing it to the U2 concert. I heard it was great. I see your smile, how it should be, the color of eyes when they are filled with life, your time on the beach, blowing out candles, Christmas at Grandma’s; oh you have a Maltese, too. I see that. I see you standing with your mom and

You’re kind of lucky that you don’t have to see it. Dad screaming your name over and over, mom pulling her hair out, curled up on the floor with her hand over her head as if she’s trying to protect herself from unseen blows. dad in front of the sign to your college. Good, I’ll know exactly who they are when I walk into the room. It makes it that much easier for me, one less question I need to ask. You’re kind of lucky that you don’t have to see it. Dad screaming your name over and over, mom pulling her hair out, curled up on the floor with her hand over her head as if she’s trying to protect herself from unseen blows. I check your Facebook page before I tell them you’re dead because it reminds me that I am talking about a person, someone they love—it quiets the voice in my head that is screaming at you right now shouting,“You mother f*cker, how could you do this to them, to people you are supposed to love!”

I'LL LOOK AT YOUR FACEBOOK PROFILE

DIVE into looking after yourself You can only please one person at a time and today, it’s time to choose yourself with a dip at your local pool oo often, women put themselves last on the priority list. Work, children, partners, home, study…and then - if we’re lucky - us. But making time to look after ourselves is paramount to being happy, healthy humans that can juggle all the demands of that pesky priority list! We can’t successfully run a family or home when our own health is suffering or we are not at peak wellness. So how do we make ourselves a priority? The first step is to get those wonderful endorphins coursing through our bodies – you know those fuzzy feel-good hormones that leave us energised, positive and ready to take on the world? The quickest way to inject these wonderful chemicals into your system is exercise! But you don’t need an expensive gym membership or fitness program to get your hit. In fact, the best way is to get a little wet with a dive into your local swimming pool.

Swimming is an amazing low-impact activity for overall fitness. It’s terrific for blood circulation and a healthy heart and lungs and works your whole body from tip to toe. It builds muscle, strength and endurance and being in the warm water of a heated pool is soothing for tired muscles. It’s also ideal for those with arthritis or injuries, and in some cases can be beneficial to recovery. The humid environment of indoor pools plus the cardiovascular effects makes swimming a great activity for people with asthma. Plus it’s a super efficient way to burn calories – so really; it’s a win-win for everyone! But don’t worry if you’re no Susie O’Neill and the thought of doing countless laps of freestyle or breaststroke has you running for the hills. Your local Superfish pool has a range

of options to get you in the water, starting from under $10. Aqua Aerobics is great option and a lot of fun, or if you’re feeling up for a few laps then that’s a great affordable option. If you need a bit more motivation, try an adult fitness swim program which caters for beginners, through to competent swimmers! The best part? Indoor heated pools are the perfect temperature all year around! No diving into freezing cold water! So ladies, it’s time to rearrange that priority list and put you on the top! Visit your local Superfish Swim School and experience how fun and enjoyable swimming can be. There are no bookings and no commitments required so that means you’ve got no excuses! GET IT I MONEY

Money Troubles Les McGuire ADFS(FP), Principal of Future Proof Financial, talks us through one financial situation that blurs the line of personal and business – lending money upporting a loved one in money trouble, now this sounds familiar right? Well, enter the often-dark pit of emotional destruction that can come with lending money to a friend or family member. It usually goes a little like this,“Hey, things have been really tough recently, we are overdue on our loan and bills, we will get through it though,” “Hey if you need help, I can lend you some money!” “Okay wow, thanks so much, you’re a life-saver.” Time goes by, things sometimes improve for the perpetrator (wow, did I say that?), and there is no offer of repayment in part or full. You feel uncomfortable; you want to ask for some money back, frustration is beating

down on you. Then out it comes: “I need you to repay some money; I need it.” But it never comes, and the relationship often suffers and sometimes perishes, never to be saved. It is a lot harder to ask for your own money back than lend it in the first place. I know I have three family members that will probably never pay me back. So why not put a personal contract in place, with stated terms, including repayments, interest rates if applicable, and over what period it should be repaid. Use a simple contract and why not use an amortisation calculator, which clearly outlines the ongoing reduction of the loan over the term of the loan - both are easy to find online. Sounds tough, but how much is your friendship worth? Many people are struggling with money pressures at present. Declining property prices around Australia is causing us to stress. We start to worry about spending money; it’s hard to see the light through the trees. It is so important to understand our cash flow and know what we can spend, while trying to put some aside for a rainy day. Having a war chest (in other words, a reserve of money) can’t be underestimated; too 21

many people spend even what they don’t have, which means if something untoward happens there is no fall-back option. It is ok to say no to your family or friends. Say, “I don’t have the money to lend”,or if you are feeling generous, protect the relationship by ensuring an agreement is put in place before handing over the money and have it witnessed independently. Remember, be strong, be happy and preserve the friendships, as they are worth more than any money can buy. March 2019

Fighting the

PATRIARCHY

one grandpa at a time

A story of strength, courage and standing up to the patriarchy, by Lisa Norgren o the other adults in the room this is fine. A grown man looms behind my three-year-old daughter. Occasionally he will poke or tickle her and she responds by shrinking. Smaller and smaller with each unwanted advance. I imagine her trying to become slight enough to slip out of her booster seat and slide under the table. When my mother views this scene, she sees playful taunting. A grandfather engaging with his granddaughter. “Mae.” My tone cuts through the din of a familiar family gathering together. She does not look at me. “Mae.” I start again. “You can tell him no Mae. If this isn’t okay you could say something like, Papa, please back up—I would like some space for my body.” As I say the words, my step-father, the bulldog, leans in a little closer, hovering just above her head. His tenebrous grin taunts me as my daughter accordions her 30-pound frame hoping to escape his tickles and hot breath. I repeat myself with a little more force. She finally peeks up at me. “Mama…can you say it?” Surprise. A three-year-old-girl doesn’t feel comfortable defending herself against a grown man. A man that has stated he loves and cares for her over and over again, and yet, stands here showing zero concern for her wishes about her own body. I ready myself for battle. “Papa! Please back up! Mae would like some space for her body.” My voice is firm but cheerful. He does not move. March 2019

“Papa. I should not have to ask you twice. Please back up. Mae is uncomfortable.” “Oh, relax,” he says, ruffling her wispy blonde hair. The patriarchy stands, patronizing me in my own damn kitchen.“We’re just playin’.” His southern drawl does not charm me. “No.You were playing. She was not. She’s made it clear that she would like some space, now please back up.” “I can play how I want with her,” he says, straightening his posture. My chest tightens. The sun-bleached hairs on my arms stand at attention as this man, who has been my father figure for more than three decades, enters the battle ring. “No. No, you cannot play however you want with her. It’s not okay to ‘have fun’ with someone who does not want to play.” He opens his mouth to respond but my rage is palpable through my measured response. I wonder if my daughter can feel it. I hope she can. He retreats to the living room and my daughter stares up at me. Her eyes, a starburst of blue and hazel, shine with admiration for her mama. The dragon has been slayed (for now). My own mother is silent. She refuses to make eye contact with me. This is the same woman who shut me down when I told her about a sexual assault I had recently come to acknowledge. This is the same woman who was abducted by a carful of strangers as she walked home one night. She fought and screamed until they kicked her out. Speeding away, they ran over her ankle and left her with a lifetime of physical and emotional pain. This is the same woman who said nothing, who could say nothing as her boss and his friends sexually harassed her for years. This is the same woman who married one of those friends. When my mother views this scene, she 24

I can play how I want with her,” he says, straightening his posture. My chest tightens. sees her daughter overreacting. She sees me “making a big deal out of nothing.” Her concerns lie more in maintaining the status quo and cradling my step-dad’s toxic ego than in protecting the shrinking three-year-old in front of her. When I view this scene, I am both bolstered and dismayed. My own strength and refusal to keep quiet is the result of hundreds, probably thousands of years of women being mistreated, and their protests ignored. It is the result of watching my own mother suffer quietly at the hands of too many men. It is the result of my own mistreatment and my solemn vow to be part of ending this cycle. It would be so easy to see a little girl being taught that her wishes don’t matter. That her body is not her own. That even people she loves will mistreat and ignore her. And that all of this is “okay” in the name of other people, men, having fun. But. What I see instead is a little girl watching her mama. I see a little girl learning that her voice matters. That her wishes matter. I see a little girl learning that she is allowed and expected to say no. I see her learning that this is not okay. And I hope my mom is learning something, too. This piece originally appeared on Motherwell Magazine.

GET IT I FASHION IN FOCUS

Fashion on the Frontline of Feminism

Get it’s Kathleen Loxton takes a critical look from the front row, and investigates how fashion and feminism are the perfect match oco Chanel once said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” Today this continues to ring true. There has indeed been something in the air, in the street and spreading like wildfire over social media. It has something to do with the very way we live and what is happening around us.You only have to look at the work of designers from Tom Ford to Nicola Glass for Kate Spade, to see it. What has stepped onto the catwalks in preparation for the cooler months ahead was indeed the embodiment of the words spoken by Chanel all those years ago. However, what do they have to say about the ideas, the evolution on the street, the very essence of the way we live and what is happening in the world? In the age of Time’s Up and #womensupportingwomen, how does fashion fit in with modern feminism? Take into consideration the apparel that will soon be filtered from runway to mall. The fit, patterns, and era references are all a palpable example of how fashion is so much more than something we simply throw on. A jumpsuit, for instance, nowadays more Wonder Woman than demure damsel in distress just waiting to be saved.Think too about the chic tailored suits, reminiscent of the ‘manly’ style nabbed by Chanel herself, who was partial to wearing whatever she pleased (even if it was relegated to menswear). Not to mention Viktor & Rolf’s slogan couture gowns, with phrases such as, "I'm not shy, I just don't like you," "Sorry I'm late, I didn't want to come," and "NO," that have taken the internet by storm. They are practically a throwback to the height of the punk revolution, where both men and women wore slogan shirts that shocked the more reserved public – making it clear women equally have the right to make their voices heard. This also transposes into the beauty trends of Autumn/Winter 2019, and with an eclectic mix of looks parading down the catwalk there is something wildly freeing about the selection. In the makeup department there were rust-coloured lips (present at shows including Kate Spade), sultry smoky eyes (courtesy of Tom Ford), and glitter (Rodarte guiding the way with this sparkling look). Hair is not to be forgotten either, with an abundance of tight curls (featured by Rodarte – described as equal parts glamazon and nymph) and, in contrast, rainbow 25

braids (the choice of Nicole Miller), as well as turbans and floral head pieces (creating an almost crown-like effect on models at Kate Spade and Rodarte’s shows). So, what does this all have to do with the way we live and our ideas? It’s interesting to remember that in the Roman Empire, red lipstick depicted social rank; men wore it too. And as for the hair? It is almost a homage to the ladies who blazed the way in hairstyle freedom, the likes of Chanel herself braving the scissors when there was a strong sense of how women’s hair should be.Today it is a statement of personal style and the choice of modern women, bold and unfaltering – ready to make a mark. Lastly, but certainly by no means least: shoes. We may look at the humble heel and assume that they were always made for women, but this is far from reality. When the Persian heeled footwear for riding and cavalry battle caught on in Western Europe around the 17th century,

Today it is a statement of personal style and the choice of modern women, bold and unfaltering – ready to make a mark. the aristocrats increased the height of their shoes so as to stand above the lower classes.Today, heels can be seen as a form of empowerment for women (thanks, in part, to Carrie Bradshaw and her Manolos) but, equally, if heels aren’t for you, there is also the option of practical boots and even stealing your father’s style with ‘dad sneakers’, seen in Ulla Johnson and Collina Strada’s shows respectively during 2019’s Fall New York Fashion Week. And as for those platforms worn by Persian warriors? They were modernised at Tadashi Shoji’s 2019 Fall New York Fashion Week show too. Fashion is indeed in the sky and the street. It does indeed inform the way we live and what is happening. So, next time you open your wardrobe, be conscious of the empowerment your clothes can provide and step out in the right way: the way that makes you feel best! March 2019

MEOW! GET A BIT OF LEOPARD IN YOUR LIFE!

with Susie the Stylist

Hello wild fashionistas! March is here, which means it’s officially the start of Autumn. With that in mind, let's talk about a little leopard in your life. Meow! I’m just back from a trip around Asia and I'm happy to say that this trend is going nowhere for this coming season. I've seen it all: the good, the bad and the downright ugly! I say, when it comes to leopard print, less is more. There's so much to choose from: bags, shoes, belts, dresses, skirts, pants etc. I feel every high-end and high-street label have jumped on the bandwagon and created a leopard piece! Girls, my take on this trend: 1. Add a pop of colour: think red, emerald and mustard to keep this trend on track. 2. Keep it neutral: whites, black and camel tone this look down and keep it earthy. 3. Add a dash of denim: my favourite! I add a leopard denim jacket with my denim jeans/skirts with a tan belt and boots - good to go! And always remember the golden rule girls: no more than one piece! So make your choice: will it be a funky belt, boots, or a full piece dress? I will be on leopard patrol this coming month so be prepared and dress your best…everyone needs a bit of grrr in your life! Stay stylish,

Susie

GET IT I BEAUTY Growing facial hair is a rite of passage for boys, and like a young girl choosing her first foundation, it’s more than likely a few shades too light and patchy in appearance. But give it a few years, some trial and error and a little patience and those eager young boys grow into ruggedly handsome men with beards - hallelujah! What is it about beards that make us women so crazy? I can assure you, it’s not the rug burn feeling we get when kissing them, and it’s most certainly not the sprinkling of hairs all over the bathroom sink when they need trimming. Perhaps it’s the commitment – any man that can devote himself to that sort of upkeep must be a keeper. But most likely, it’s just because they incite images of testosterone-fuelled masculinity and you just know that a man with a beard can open that stubborn jar lid – swoon! Celebrities such as Jason Momoa, Kit Harington and Hugh Jackman have brought back the beard with a scruffy vengeance. If your man is following in their rugged footsteps and growing out his facial fuzz, then secretly thank your higher power. Secondly, make sure he is armed with the right tools and products so the end result is less cave man and more George Clooney!

BEHIND EVERY GREAT

BEARD WELL-OILED MACHINE

CLEAN AS A WHISTLE

A high-quality beard oil is essential for hydrating the skin and hair and keeping your man’s appearance slick. It will tame the flyaway hairs and reduce flaking — also known as beard-duff. Better yet, it also doubles as a styling agent.

It is recommended that men wash their beards twice a week and no, his normal face wash is not going to cut it! Normal face washes are not designed with hair in mind, so they too can over-dry your beard, leaving it void of its natural oils. Lather, rinse, repeat gentlemen! STYLE LIKE A PRO

Oh no gentlemen, you did not wake up like this! Good beards take commitment, patience and styling. Brush through your beard to remove fallen hairs and dirt — or let's be honest, fallen food — and then use a good quality beard balm to achieve a neat, sleek look.

'man flu'

FIGHTING

Ladies, flu season is upon us and that means that one of the most deadly and debilitating sicknesses will be abundant: man flu. If your man has been struck down by this life-altering illness, never fear, we’ve got your guide to going into battle and coming out alive.

Identify the enemy The man flu is usually pretty easy to spot. Symptoms commonly include sullen demeanour, a swollen sensitivity to sarcasm, inflamed sense of victimhood, inability to assist with basic household chores, incessant whining and an abnormal willingness to describe symptoms at great length. These symptoms are usually accompanied with statements such as, “I’m dying,” and “I don’t know how I’ll survive.” If these are present, you’ve got yourself a serious case of the Man Flu.

Arm yourself It’s crucial to arm yourself with the right ammunition before you hit the frontline. Be sure to stock up on cold and flu tablets, thermometer, tissues, chicken soup, throat lozenges and have plenty of fluids handy. Oh, and you’ll want to have the TV remote nearby.

Go into battle

Okay ladies, this is it. Helmets strapped on, cold and flu tablets at the ready, it’s go-time. Be sure he gets plenty of rest, although this won’t be difficult as he’ll already be horizontal on the couch, unable to lift a finger. Make sure he keeps the fluids up and takes any medication when he should – men have a way of ‘forgetting’ these things.

Call in reinforcements

In some rare cases, your man may not just be ‘wimping out’. If his illness lasts more than seven days, encourage him to see a doctor (by encourage, we mean force). Likewise, if his fever persists or he has trouble with breathing, seek medical advice.

Protect yourself

While we realise you’ll be flat out nursing your ailing patient , it’s important

It’s crucial to arm yourself with the right ammunition before you hit the frontline. to look after yourself as well! Be sure to increase your intake of Vitamin C and wash your hands regularly to reduce the risk of becoming sick yourself. A hand sanitiser is another great option for that last line of defence! And with that, we wish you all the luck on the frontline ladies! For all your man flu ammunition, head to your local Chempro Chemist or visit them online at chempro.com.au

GET IT I DATING

hen it comes to love, we’ve all crashed and burned; after all, it involves matters of the heart. And it is so easy to follow it and leave our rational thinking behind. Remember that guy who was so sweet and exciting but ended up being a fake romantic? Yes, I know all about it. Guys who seem really nice and fun can sometimes be the perfect jerk. So, what can you do to weed out the bad boys? After 25 years of being a relationship and dating expert, I have seen all types of douchebags so here are my 10 dating rules to stop meeting Mr. Wrong. Don’t date people who expect you to change While being able to compromise is a great quality to have, men who generally wish to ‘change’ you for the ‘better’ should be number one on your ‘to avoid’ list. Don’t date a guy who needs to be fixed Is he all about himself? Is he a major commitment-phobe? Don’t try to fix him. Chances are he won’t change, and you’ll end up breaking your own heart. You’re better off dating someone who at least shares similar life goals.

February 2019

Don’t date people that your friends hate No, your friends are not jealous of you. Not always, but often times our friends and family can be a good judge of character. They can give a less biased perspective to a relationship that we are too invested in. So, if your family and friends hate the new guy, time for a rethink. Don’t date him if he seems too familiar Is he just like your ex? Are familiar issues starting to crop up? That means you might be dating your ex 2.0. My advice? Get out while you can! Try dating a non-douchebag Now this is when an expert can come in handy. A professional matchmaker can help you explore candidates that truly fit your personality. Initially clients think the men they meet are not their type because they are so used to a particular type. But after a few dates, they realise that we’ve matched them well. Truly believe that you are worth it Just because a douchebag made you feel any less, doesn’t mean that you are. It’s time to work on your confidence and self-worth. Never believe things like “You’ll never find someone who will love you,” or “Who will want you once I leave you?” Remember, somewhere out there, there is someone looking for love just like you. 36

It’s a Thursday morning, you’re on your second cup of coffee and productivity is at a peak. You take a quick photo of your workspace with your cute notepad, laptop and kitschy coffee cup and post it online. Perfectly innocent, right? Well, one blogger March 2019

found out how dangerous this can be when, after posting a picture of her home office set up, her followers quickly pointed out that by zooming in on the photo, her diary and post-it notes were clearly visible – featuring phone numbers, personal information, client names and invoices being chased. Gulp!

School Uniforms

The kids are heading back to school and look adorable in their school uniforms – complete with oversized backpacks and dorky straight-brimmed hat – so you take the traditional back to school snap and post it to Facebook. You’re a proud mumma! Well, you’ve just announced where your child will be seven hours a day, five days a week. Does that sound safe to you? No, me neither.

Sold Sign

Recently, a popular blogger shared a photo that showed her standing with the auction

sign out the front of the house she had just purchased. The street number was visible, as well as the name of the real estate agent. One simple Google search using these details, delivered her full address and the price she paid at auction. You wouldn’t announce these details publicly, so don’t inadvertently post it in your photos!

Gift Cards and Credit Cards

Learn this valuable lesson from those who have learned it before you. In 2016, a Perth woman decided to sell an unwanted makeup voucher online to make some extra cash for a holiday. She took a few snaps, uploaded them to Facebook and within minutes the $94 value was stolen. Avoid posting any images that include barcodes or reference numbers, as these can easily be used in an online store. Oh and when it comes to posting a photo of your credit card, the rule is simple: don’t.

Have you discovered the magic of Google Maps Street View? The Google feature provides real life, panoramic views from positions along streets all over the world. Want to see what the house you grew up in looks like? Punch in the address to Google Maps Street View and you’re whisked right back to your childhood home. Amazing! But this technology is loved by more than just the nostalgic. Criminals around the world are utilising the technology to ‘case a joint’ from the comfort of their own home. No longer do they need to sneak around in the shadows of the night to assess your home or business for a potential break in. By using Google Maps Street View, they are able to see potential entry points to your home, if you have a dog, if any security systems or gates are present and find good hiding places around your property. Scary, right?! While there’s not much you can do about this one, it just goes to prove how technology can be used for both good and evil and how aware you need to be about your safety online!

TIPS

on getting a

PAY

RISE

IN 2019 A huge barrier to pay equality is the struggle we face as women when asking for a raise, and it’s easier said than done. Karen Gately, founder of Corporate Dojo and author of The People Manager’s Toolkit, shows us how o, you’ve been waiting to be recognised for your hard work in the form of a pay rise, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen any time soon. Like so many other Australian’s, it has been a while since you last received an increase and you’re hoping 2019 is the year your employer chooses to ‘show

me the money’. The simple reality is though, just hoping your employer proactively does the ‘right thing’ is a hit and miss strategy at best. Among the most important steps you can take to ensure 2019 does in fact turn out to be the year you earn what you deserve, are these five tips:

Own your job. Don’t just turn up to work and do what you have to. Understand the important outcomes your job creates and choose to care about ensuring those results are achieved. For example, if you work in a service role, look for opportunities to earn customer loyalty through every interaction. In other words, do more than simply meet the customer’s baseline expectations, seize the opportunities that present to go above and beyond. Taking full ownership includes putting your hand up when you need help, or when reaching key objectives is proving to be difficult. Employers are entirely more likely to pay more to the people on their team who they can rely on to strive to do their best. Being proactive and accountable are essential to earning a reputation for being an indispensable member of the team, who is worth paying a little more to keep. Understand what you’re worth. There is a salary range that most employers are going to be willing to pay for a particular job to be done. Do your research and have a good understanding of what that range is. Access freely available salary surveys online, talk to industry colleagues and reach out to recruiters. Next, reflect the depth of your experience and standard of your performance and decide where within that range you believe you should be paid. As a general rule, if you have two to three years’ experience and are a strong performer, the midpoint of the market range is a reasonable place to start. If you have more experience and regularly exceed expectations, it’s reasonable to expect your employer to be more competitive. If you are unsure how your performance or potential is perceived, have honest conversations with your manager and colleagues. March 2019

Put your hand up. Talk to your manager about your desire to earn a pay rise in 2019. The sooner they understand your hopes and expectations the better. Asking to be considered for an increase during performance appraisal time may be too late to allow you to have any direct influence on the outcome. Avoid the all too common mistake of raising the question at the start of the year and then holding your breath for the outcome you want. Check in with your manager on how you are tracking throughout the year. Grow. Ask your manager what they believe it will take for you to be viewed as deserving of an increase. Understand if there are skills you need to master, or performance improvements you need to make, early in the year. Work with a coach or mentor to grow in the ways you need to. Leverage your manager but look also for other people who are able to share the lessons they have learned and guide you to achieve your goals. Be willing to look into the mirror of truth and take ownership of the things you still need to achieve in order to earn more money. Expect fairness. The simple truth is, some employers are not fair and have little desire to pay more than they absolutely have to. Unfortunately, some aren’t even willing to do what the law or agreements require of them. Do your part to earn an increase but expect also that your employer is both lawful and ethical in their remuneration practices. Seek advice from outside of your organisation if you doubt your employer’s integrity. At the end of the day, if your employer isn’t willing to do the right thing it’s definitely time to move on.
