GET IT I GET THINKING

Not so fascinating — By Krysten Davis —

love the spring racing season. I like dressing up and drinking champagne and watching the fillies compete. I also like the horses. At these events I wear a hat. A hat covers most of the head and can stay on by itself without a comb. Hats are classic, timeless and classy. I do not ever wear anything that looks like it comes from the craft box and someone has got a little too excited with feathers, glitter and the hot glue gun! These creations are otherwise known as ‘fascinators’. I’m hoping this name is facetious, as the only thing fascinating about them is how anyone can think they look anything but ridiculous. My other rule is that I never take my shoes off. I may have danced in a circle with my friends around an altar of handbags, drinking rum and coke and wearing stonewash low-waisted jeans — but my shoes stayed firmly on.

I love the spring racing season. I like “dressing up and drinking champagne and watching the fillies compete. I also like the horses.

I also like to err on the side of not showing too much sideboob and being able to breathe in my outfit of choice. I will be the person looking disapprovingly at the 22-year-old in the micro dress; who’s wearing a concoction of pink feathers and gold glitter wedged firmly in her hair extensions, waving her orange arms around, tripping over her fake boobs and flashing her underwear (or lack of ) to the crowd. Not. Very. Ladylike. I’m sorry to sound like a nanna, but wear a hat (and undies), keep your shoes on, and this race season, as that well known philosopher Ron Burgundy would say, “Stay classy," ladies!

GET IT I COMMUNITY

Nicole Stewart, Administrative Officer of the Rural Fire Service, joins Get it in light of Queensland’s recent fires to give us insight into their incredible work and her story

years may have passed, but I can still clearly remember attending my first fire as a Rural Fire Brigade volunteer. The excitement and nervousness as I headed to the station to meet up with the crew who I would be going to the fire with. The drive to the incident scene where there were thousands of questions running through my head which all came down to one main question — can I do this? To answer simply — yes. To say that my first fire was a learning experience would be an understatement. It was the first opportunity I had to put my training into action and the crew that I was working with was patient, educational and informative. I was hooked. As the years progressed, I gathered more experience under my belt with not only fires, but with training, firefighter competitions and in Incident Management Teams — pretty much whatever I was able to put my hand up for. There weren’t many other females in the October 2019

Brigade initially, but that didn’t stop me from getting as involved as I possibly could. As far as they were concerned it didn’t matter what age or sex you were if you were prepared to put in the work. The Brigade I was a member of became like a second family, and through them I was able to create some wonderful memories and experience some amazing opportunities, which ultimately lead to a paid position with the Rural Fire Service six years later. My new position was based regionally, and I was the only Operational female in the Area Office. I found I continued to experience very few issues with me being female in the operational role and feel that this had a lot to do with the history and make-up of rural brigades in general. For years the men and women have fought fires in their communities side by side. They work together to do their best to protect Queenslanders' homes and

A roaring good read

Brisbane-based Karen Young, author, speaker, psychotherapist and Founder of Hey Sigmund, talks to Get it’s Kathleen Loxton about her latest children’s book, But We’re Not Lions, which helps young children tackle mean behaviour, boundaries, and self-acceptance Kathleen.L: What inspired you to write children's books? Karen.Y: Since the beginning, we have been telling stories as a way to make sense of our world and our experiences, and to connect with each other. Stories are a powerful way to communicate information and open up the conversations that matter. Children do great things with solid information, and when we can give them information that makes sense of their world and their experiences, we help lift them to full flight. There’s something else though — even though I’ve written about these topics in a children’s book, they are topics that we have probably all felt the edges of — people wanting us to be different to who we are, doubting our own power and magic. If we can talk about these topics in a way that make them safe, relatable and more ‘tangible' for children, it opens up a way to have those important conversations with them, with each other, and with ourselves. K.L: Do you think in the age of technology it's especially important for children to read hard copy books? K.Y: Any reading is great for children, but there is something about reading a hard copy book — holding the book, turning the pages, the feel of the paper — that seems to make reading more of an experience. One of the important parts of books for children is the conversation that comes out of it. It is through this conversation that we can empower them and deepen their understanding of important concepts. K.L: Something magical happens when you read a great book. With all your professional experience, do you find writing an effective way to express complex ideas like bullying and peer pressure to children? K.Y: Through books, we can make sense of big, important concepts like anxiety and courage (the subjects of my first two books), and mean behaviour, boundaries, and self-acceptance (which is explored in But We’re Not Lions). We can present these concepts in a way that make it possible for children to walk around in them, explore, learn and discover what they need to feel safer, stronger and braver in a world that can feel tough sometimes — beautiful and lifegiving and fascinating, but also tough. October 2019

K.L: What's the biggest lesson you would like children and their parents to take from your book? K.Y: We won’t always be able to lift our children over the things that feel bigger than them. I wish we could, but we can’t. What we can do is nourish their self-belief and a sense of their own courage and power, so the things that happen around them or to them will be less able to fall them. The book is about giving children a way to feel their own strength and power, so that regardless of whatever is happening around them or to them, they can hold on to the truth that they are amazing, that they matter, and that nothing anybody says or does can change that. K.L: What was the publishing process like for you? K.Y: With my first book, it was a very long process. There was so much information — too much — and a lot of decisions to make. I made plenty of mistakes and I learned something from all of them. This is my third book, and it’s the first one I’ve self-published. It felt like an obvious, easy progression to move from partnership publishing to selfpublishing. I’ve had a great team alongside me that has helped me to bring this book to life — from the illustrator, designer, and printer, to the marketing and distributing. There are so many people who are involved in creating a book, and finding the right people is such a critical part of the process. I’m very grateful to have found amazing people to work with, who have helped me to make this book happen. K.L: Any advice for those wanting to write a children's book? K.Y: Do it! We all have a story to tell. There are a lot of paths to publication and a lot of information, so it’s important to find the right fit and to do what feels right for you. And be prepared to make plenty of mistakes — you’ll learn something every time and will be one step closer to where you want to be, but armed with new wisdom. K.L: When can we get our hands on a copy, and do you have any plans for a next book? K.Y: The book will be available in November. I have so many book ideas! The hard part is deciding on which one next. But yes — definitely plans for another. 14

GET IT I SPIRIT AGE

In the

SPIRIT of AGEING The secret to slowing ageing might just be in embracing how old you feel. Sarah Blinco discovers her ‘spirit age’, and sashays back in time

October 2019

16

irthdays — they roll-around in that annual cycle without fail. In my experience, I’ve begun having far more conversations with people about how old they feel, not about how old they are. But this birthday banter is often quickly and embarrassingly shrugged off. What if we’re all looking at this the wrong way though, and there’s a better way to accept our ‘age’? Actress and model Christie Brinkley inspired the Get it girls recently, when we read about her celebrating her ‘15th 50th birthday’. She did this to recognise her ‘spirit age’ and the fact that she feels no older than 50. A ‘spirit age’, how delightful, and refreshing. What would you consider yours to be — what flashes into your mind when someone asks you how old you feel; how old do other people think you are? Certainly, ‘spirit age’ is a freshly coined term, but the concept is nothing new. Ask around — it’s not surprising to discover that most of us know our spirit age — that age we feel inside. Studies on ageing show that a large majority of people feel 15 per cent younger than they are, and this may account for that spirit number that pops into your head. For the most part we’re asked to be ‘sensible’, to deny such a fanciful notion. But at Get it we are advocating a turn-around in attitudes to ageing, and for very good reason. Your spirit age is how you’ve moved in this world – your experience, outlook, gratitude — your aura. It is not your chronological age, as Brinkley pointed out in a UK media

interview,“…that other arbitrary number”. Modern psychology studies confirm that mindset and outlook on life strongly influence our overall wellbeing and happiness. This is far from just textbook theory, with many of us knowing and experiencing it for ourselves. And, it’s precisely why embracing your spirit age is healthy. Researchers in ageing psychology talk about ‘stereotype embodiment’, which means if we don’t expect to be able to do certain things as we age, we won’t try to challenge that belief. Then, the belief becomes the truth. However, the more positively you think about ageing, the more ‘control’ you have over it. This is important, especially when dealing with setbacks. Those who do not see a situation as ‘part of getting old’, are known to be more proactive in taking steps to overcome or manage issues as they arise, including tackling health concerns. Countless studies have gone a long way towards proving that we are what we think, and this manifests in the physical form. Negative attitudes to ageing are stressful on your system, just as any other anxious thoughts are. Surprising research in this area has uncovered that people who had a negative idea about ageing before they turned 39 were twice as likely to have a heart attack after 60 — a result of the worry they’ve felt over getting older! Your spirit age: it’s not so trite after all, right? If you’re not feeling it though, no worries. We’ve garnered a few tips along the way to get you going. In the first instance,

psychologists suggest befriending Google. Yep, use Google to pique your interest: get curious. Look up things you don’t know or understand — anything from investigating a new make-up trend, finding out who that actor is that everyone’s talking about, or learning a few phrases from a foreign language is perfect. Don’t feel silly if you have older and younger friends. This is actually great! Trying new experiences and spending time with varying age groups is seen as a healthy way to invigorate your social circle and foster a youthful perspective. If you are seeking to improve things in this area, keep an eye out on local noticeboards or sign-up to a service like Meetup.com where you can discover hobby and interest groups near you, filled with new people of all ages you can mingle with. Also, check your perceptions. Who is older than you who you can really say is that uncool? To add further clarity to this point, take to Google again and discover all the amazing people who are older than you who are sharing brilliance with the world, running marathons and building businesses. Chances are you don’t even need to turn to Google to think of some of these examples. Make these people your role models. Finally, celebrate your birthday. If you stop doing this, you’re telling yourself it’s something you’re ashamed of. I don’t know about you, but I’m going to hop straight to it and plan for mine now… keep an eye out for invites in the post next April, ‘born again at 33’.

My age is rarely guessed right, and I pride myself on my vibrant and friendly persona that keeps people guessing. I’m not defined by what my age says I’m supposed to ‘be’. People usually think I’m much younger than I am and I’m happy to live like that. I know now that there are times to be serious but it’s important to keep a young outlook on life.” CLAIRE LICCIARDO, SPIRIT AGE 37 “I recently turned 47, and to be honest I was having trouble dealing with coming so close to approaching the big 5-0. But, what can you do? I look after myself and I feel good. Megan Dalla-Camina, author of Simple Soulful Sacred: A Woman’s Guide to Clarity, Comfort and Coming Home to Herself (Hay House), teaches us to bring order to our lives this season o you dream of living a simpler life? Perhaps you’re happy with your life in general, but you long for less chaos and drama, and more space and ease. You’re not alone. Many of us are seeking this kind of quiet change. If the Marie Kondo magical tidying movement has taught us anything, it’s that there’s a certain sense of calm that comes from simplicity. But how do you simplify your life amongst your work, kids, family, and everything else on your to do list? Here are five places to start. CREATE ROUTINES Many of us think that having a routine will be too hard, or that it will cramp our style. It can actually be the opposite. Putting structure around key elements of your day, and creating routines, can take a huge amount of chaos out of your life. Think about the time you wake up and the morning routine that follows. How can you make it more routine, giving you less variables to worry about? What about meal preparation, mealtimes, after school routine for the kids, evening routine and bedtimes. Simplifying what happens and when, and putting some structure around it can remove hundreds of tiny decisions every day that are unnecessary and waste time and mental energy. CLEAR CLUTTER Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know by now that clearing the clutter is high on the list of pathways to happiness. Clutter makes our life complex. Piles of messiness, books, papers, boxes, clothes, washing, ironing, knick knacks, kids’ stuff, things that you will never use again, all make our life anything but simple. But Marie Kondo’ing your life can seem overwhelming (even the thought of putting all of my clothes on the bed leaves me in a cold sweat!). Start small. One drawer. Then another. A kitchen cupboard. Then another. One part of your closet, and then another. Before you know it, you will have calmly cleared the clutter without giving yourself a panic attack. Clear space is like breathing mountain air. And it’s a great way to bring more simplicity into your life. October 2019

GET IT I LIFESTYLE

STOP SPENDING Do you know where your money goes? How much cash do you spend on irrelevant items, things you don’t need, food you won’t eat, clothes you won’t wear, because you’re in the habit of doing it or you are distracting yourself from something you don’t want to deal with? Start simplifying your life by pausing all discretionary spending for two weeks. Think of how fewer decisions you will need to make. Prepare your lunch at home. Take your coffee in a flask. Cook dinner instead of getting takeaway. Do your food shopping once a week. Before spending, pause, breathe and check in: do you need it, will you really use it, do you already have something like it, where else would this money be better spent or saved? It will change your mindset, save your cash and simplify your life. STRIVE FOR LESS When was the last time you actually strived for less? We’re socialised to always want more. But what if more wasn’t better? Searching for simple could be as easy as learning to be content with what you have right now. If you could let go of the expectation that more is better, and instead practice gratitude for all you have and, you free up space for magic to happen. You create more ease. You let go of the striving that can consume your energy in a negative way. It’s a simple practice that brings simplicity and grace into your life.

IDLE TIME See where you can leave gaps in your schedule instead of packing your to do list with more. As long as you’re meeting your commitments — to your family, your work, your kids, yourself - then you can afford to leave some space for idle time. It may seem like a luxury, but it’s a core way to bring more simplicity into your days. Leave space. Use that time for something that brings joy into your day, like gardening, painting, making nourishing food, going for a walk. Or meditate, take a nap, stare out the window and just daydream. Be idle. It’s amazing how spacious and simple you will feel by doing absolutely nothing, even if it’s just for ten minutes.

An interesting thing happens when you create space. When you simplify. When you go back to basics. We find more ease and more peace in our lives. Each day is another opportunity to remove something, strip something back, give something away, move more slowly, connect more deeply, breathe more freely. And to just learn to be, not become. To simply live. 18

BEDTIME

GET IT I FEATURE

Think you don’t need eight hours sleep each night? Science says, ‘think again’. Sarah Blinco highlights fresh new eye-opening facts

here’s a book I picked up during the year called Why We Sleep. Quite frankly, it’s a terrifying read, packed with health warnings that are the stuff of nightmares. But I was hooked (despite all the science, my brain is not wired that way). I’d thoroughly encourage you to have a look too, and focus on getting a better night’s rest, every evening. In it, the book’s author and neuroscientist Matthew Walker, shares urgent and compelling evidence gathered from five years study dedicated to everything that is sleep. It will make even the most devout night owls among you, reconsider committing the recommended eight hours to your bed. Rare is the person who does not worry about their sleep in this age of such blurred lines between work and rest, which is how I got drawn into Walker’s work in the first

October 2019

place. I’ve struggled with sleep over the past few years. I’ve suffered the effects of ongoing insomnia,‘light sleeping’ and frustrating tossing and turning. Any manner of noise would wake me and keep me awake. Falling asleep has been a challenge, which leads to anxiety about not being able to get to sleep, and that then carries on all day. In the mornings, coffee was my friend, until it stopped working. Sometimes wine would help me fall asleep (great!), until it woke me up (not great), and I’d try again the next evening (bad). I could feel the spiralling effects of one poor night’s sleep after another in my world each day, making it difficult to focus, and deal with life’s challenges. While the bags under my eyes and obvious low immunity did greatly concern me, little did I know this is just a fraction of what I — we — should be worried about.

20

It’s quite easy to guess how sleep might benefit us, and science backs all of this too: • Look prettier, age slower: sleep • Be wittier: sleep • Feel productive and happier: sleep • Better/faster/stronger at the gym, or playing sport: sleep • Make smarter decisions: sleep But experts are focussed on comparably larger problems associated with today’s ‘worldwide sleep loss epidemic’. Evidence strongly supports claims that getting too little sleep across the adult lifespan significantly raises the risk of developing poor mental health, cancer (bowel, prostate and breast), Alzheimer’s and Dementia. The science behind each risk differs, and is complex, but the results are in. No more badges of honour for ‘being tough’ and ‘surviving’ on just a few hours’ sleep. This is serious.

READING “ FOUR IN EVERY TEN AUSTRALIANS ARE NOT GETTING THE SLEEP WE NEED…OF EVEN GREATER CONCERN, IN 2016-17 INADEQUATE SLEEP WAS ESTIMATED TO CONTRIBUTE TO 3017 DEATHS IN AUSTRALIA.

If you need convincing, here’s just some of the evidence presented by Walker and his contemporaries that supports the recommendation for getting eight hours sleep every night. Scarily, after just one night of only four- or five-hours’ sleep, your natural killer cells — the ones that attack the cancer cells that appear in your body every day — drop by 70 per cent. For each night you do not get the recommended hours, you’re quite literally shaving time off your life. Another fact derived from years of sleep science research: adults aged 45 years or older who sleep less than six hours a night are 200 per cent more likely to have a heart attack or stroke in their lifetime, compared with those sleeping about eight hours a night.

The link between a lack of sleep and cancer is now so strong that the World Health Organisation has classified any form of night-time shift work as a probable carcinogen, because of a disruption to a person’s sleep-wake rhythms. In July, the Sleep Health Foundation (SHF) and Australasian Sleep Association (ASA) announced that one of the eleven recommendations from the federal Sleep Health Awareness Inquiry specifically calls for a national campaign to make the nation sleep better. Professor Dorothy Bruck Chair of the SHF said. “Better awareness plus changing behaviours around sleep health is vital to improving the wellbeing of the 40 per cent of Australians who have inadequate sleep.”

’’

The federal inquiry report states: “Four in every ten Australians are not getting the sleep we need… Of even greater concern, in 2016-17 inadequate sleep was estimated to contribute to 3017 deaths in Australia.” Sleep is recognised by all global health organisations as being one of the three pillars to good health — the other two being diet and exercise. Walker argues that sleep should be considered the “foundation on which the other two health bastions sit”. We have known the importance of sleep for decades yet sleep health has not received the wide attention it deserves. I can personally share some good news on this though: it’s not too late for you to turn it around. Sweet dreams.

How to sleep well Matthew Walker, director of the Center for Human Sleep Science at the University of California, Berkeley, and author of Why We Sleep, gives this advice: l Carve out eight hours a day for sleep. This should be nonnegotiable. l Very important: go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on the weekend or your days off. l Dim lights in your house an hour before bed. Stay away from LED screens that emit blue light which fools the brain into thinking it’s daytime. Darkness allows the release of melatonin which aids the healthy timing of sleep. l Keep your bedroom cool at about 18 degrees. The body needs to drop in temperature to enable good sleep. l Avoid alcohol and caffeine. Alcohol is a sedative which may make you tired, but inhibits natural, healthy sleep. Similarly, even if you can fall asleep after drinking coffee in the evening, your depth of sleep is negatively impacted with caffeine in the brain. l Can’t fall asleep within 20 minutes or wake up in the middle of the night? Don’t stay in bed awake. The brain learns the association between your bed being the place you’re awake, rather than where you sleep. Instead, get up, go to another room and in dim light read a book (no screens, food or checking emails). Return to bed when you’re sleepy. Alternatively, try to meditate — quiet the mind and the body, and that may help you fall back to sleep more easily. 21

s love worth risking your financial wellbeing? Here’s what you need to know about protecting your finances if you’re in a de facto relationship. It is hard to be practical when you fall in love. You want a companion. You enjoy spending time with someone who has similar interests. Unfortunately, the realities of life do need to be considered. You must protect yourself above all else. Australia does recognise de facto pairings, both for heterosexual and same sex relationships. To determine whether you’re in a de facto relationship and open to a claim for property settlement or spousal maintenance under the Family Law Act, you’ll fall into these criteria: l You’re not legally married to each other; l You’ve been living together on a genuine basis, normally for at least 2 years; and l You’re not related by family.

Love and money Family Law accredited specialist Luke Brandon explains more about how this issue is viewed within a legal framework

If the above criteria doesn’t apply, other ‘gateways’ to establishing a de facto relationship include: l If there is a child of the relationship; or l A party has made substantial contributions to the relationship; or l The relationship has been registered under State law. The concept of ‘living together on a genuine domestic basis’, is something that the court will consider on a case by case basis. Factors considered may include how long you’ve been together, if a sexual relationship exists, degree of mutual commitment to a shared life, care and support of children, your reputation and public aspects of your relationship, ownership, use and acquisition of property, the degree of financial dependence or interdependence and any arrangements for financial support between you and your partner. Additional factors may include if the relationship has been registered, the nature or extent of your common residence, degree of mutual commitments to a shared life and performance of household duties. Understand the legalities De facto status suits many people, but there are legal issues that arise. Most common are: 1. A claim for property settlement or spousal maintenance in the event of separation; or 2. A claim against your estate in the event of your death. In terms of protecting assets while you’re alive, a Binding Financial Agreement is the only option available, and you’ll need to speak to your solicitor for advice on this. Other steps that can be considered include transferring assets to children or to a trust controlled by your children, but this is often not practical and comes with its own risks. Ideally, although expensive, Binding Financial Agreements should be used in conjunction with a mutual Will and Binding Death Benefit Nomination, to cover distribution of superannuation benefits. Death, like separation, brings its own potential for a claim against 23

Regardless of whether you are in a de facto relationship or married, separation can result in significant legal costs. Your ex may make a claim on your property, savings and superannuation – all of which may have been acquired well before the relationship. your assets, and it’s worth having a clear plan discussed with a legal professional, that protects you, your assets and who you want them to benefit. Cover yourself Regardless of whether you are in a de facto relationship or married, separation can result in significant legal costs. Your ex may make a claim on your property, savings and superannuation – all of which may have been acquired well before the relationship. Ending a de facto relationship can be just as expensive as going through a divorce. If you have worked hard to set yourself up financially and you are no longer working or due to retire, it is especially important to understand before deciding to embark on a de facto relationship, the financial downside for not only yourself but your children. A good start is to get advice from your accountant and lawyer. Consider entering into a Binding Financial Agreement and undertaking some estate planning. Importantly, get on the same page as your partner with these plans. Discuss expectations and agree to provide full disclosure to each other as to your financial position and future wishes. swimmers

Karen Baildon, of Superfish Swim Schools, inspires us to teach our kids this lifesaving skill he amount of swimming time a child has in their lessons is so important for a child’s swimming development. Swimming industry experts call this ‘Real Swimming Time’ — the real amount of time a child is exposed to the water and learning to swim. Most parents are shocked when they realize the limited amount of time actually spent in lessons. Did you know 1, half hour lesson per week is only equal to 2 hours of actual swimming practice each month? Consider this… l Over twelve months, without missing lessons for sickness and holidays, that is worth about twenty-hours per year of swimming lessons! l Can you imagine a child learning to read or write in this amount of time? In less than a week? l Our children are pretty clever, learning this completely ‘learnt’ skill, when you think about the actual time they spend in lessons!

l It’s pretty simple — the more time a child spends in a swimming program, each week and month, over each year, the faster they will learn. Our ‘Under 5s’ also have a limited muscle memory, which means they need swimming skills constantly reinforced and practiced, with limited breaks, to build swimming skills. Why are regular and consistent swimming lessons important for all children? l It is a lifesaving skill: yes — this skill saves lives! l It is a fully learnt skill — unlike running or walking, that comes naturally to us as humans, children need to learn swimming skills. l It is a lifelong skill — once mastered, we will have the skill of swimming for the rest of our lives, enjoying swimming through adulthood.

l Swimming lessons are not a regular ‘activity’ or ‘hobby’ that should be optional! l Learning to swim is not ‘just another sport’ — until a child’s swimming skills exceed lifesaving skills! As a parent, the goal should be for your child to be a strong swimmer by the time they start school. By 5-years-old all Aussie kids should be able to: l Comfortably swim 25 metres, lifting head for breath or side breathing, with no aids. l Independently tread water for 30+ seconds. l Independently back float for 30+ seconds. Can your child comfortably complete these 3 skills? Karen Baildon is an Aquatic Community Expert for the Australian board of ‘Swim Safer’, National Lecturer for Swim Australia and founder and owner of Superfish Swim Schools, operating in South East Queensland for 23 years.

RIDE like a GIRL Elise Cincotta, of 2K Thoroughbreds, talks Champagne Jet, the $155,150 prize-winning all-female owned racehorse, and being furlongs ahead of the game. By Get it’s Kathleen Loxton hampagne Jet was bought at the 2018 Magic Millions, and it’s a purchase that has had a huge impact on Elise, her family and the team of female owners of Champagne Jet. Elise recalled, “My husband [Sterling] bought Champagne Jet as part of our purchases that year... I was at the track and I saw Sunlight win the one-year-old Magic Millions, and it was an all-girls owned horse. So not only did they win the major $1.5 million prize money, but they also got $500,000 on top of that for being an all-owned women’s horse. I thought then, right that’s it, I’m taking one of those horses my husband has just bought and I’m going to turn it into an all-girls horse, and we’re going to go for that. Little did I know it’s exceptionally hard to get into, it’s not just ‘I want to be in that race,’ and it’ll happen.’’ Not to mention, as Elise also added, professionals can spend up to $5 million a year trying to get a single horse in that Magic Millions race. Even though it was such a huge investment, and commitment, Elise took the opportunity in her stride.“That was my first really big involvement as having a horse on my own and getting all the girls together. [Invested] in that horse is 18 girls, two of them were in previous horses with us, but the rest of the 16 were all new to racing; never owned a horse before, never been involved, didn’t know what it was about. I said,‘you’ve got to get involved, just give it a go,’’’ said Elise. Previously, Elise’s experience of horse racing was much like everyone else’s; enjoying a day out, donning a frock and drinking champagne with friends.Though, learning a lot of horse racing knowledge from her husband, Elise explained,“I guess the change for me was when I started discovering everything behind the scenes and started watching the horses, from when we buy them as one-year-olds, which is still a baby, and have them at our farm, and seeing them grow,” Elise and her team put the upmost into the caring and training of these beautiful animals, treating them more like family than an investment (Elise’s beautiful daughter is also very fond of the horses). She elaborated,“When you buy them, they are not broken in, they’ve never had anyone sit on them, they’ve never had anyone lead them around… to follow a horse’s progress, from watching them develop at that point, up until winning races, is just unbelievable. You get so invested in these horses — they become your children. You’re so October 2019

THERE’S ALL THESE “INTRICACIES OF HORSE RACING,

invested in their process; making decisions around who their jockey is, who their trainer is, and all of those things suddenly become really important when you’re invested in these animals. The more I’ve got involved the more I love it.” With the support of her husband’s racing knowledge and her own growing experience, Elise is now part of important conversations regarding the horses’ welfare and training, and so are the female owners alongside her (who all equally share the costs). The women can often be found in the early hours of the morning at Elise’s farm, sipping their coffee and watching their budding racehorses with pride. Elise also importantly noted,“There’s all these intricacies of horse racing, it’s not just ‘throw someone on and run around the track.’” Of the training process Elise said,“Once we get an indication from how it’s been broken in, we know what type of horse it’s going to be. Some horses are early runners, so that means they will be up and running by two-years-old, and some horses take some time, they’re a little bit smaller in the frame, or their mindset. Just like children or toddlers, they need more time, more patience, more nurture, more care. It still means they’re going to be exceptional racehorses, but they just need to be dealt with in different ways at different times. So, understanding the horses and deciding who’s going to train that horse, and where it’s going to go, that’s all a part of the process I’m involved in...’’ The future, and face, of horse racing is changing with the likes of Elise and her fellow women joining the prestigious world. It’s being shaken up and put to the test, encouraging girls that it’s not just for the boys. We know one thing for sure Get it girls, it won’t be long before Elise and her crew are looking for the next golden ticket. 26

DO: wear a hat or a fascinator To create the ultimate raceday look choose something that compliments your features and your outfit but will not drive you crazy on the day, especially if the wind is not your friend.

RACEDAY FASHION YOUR WAY! Hello fashionistas! Spring racing... do this in style! Dress for your body shape, and love what you have — TODAY! Familiarise yourself with each raceday’s dress code before planning your outfit and attending. For example, Derby Day calls for black and white (it is a strict colour free day), while you can embrace block colours and unique design details for Melbourne Cup Day. A block colour means you can go nuts with headwear, bags and shoes (my pick for this would be a fabulous jumpsuit). Remember to keep hemlines on or below the knee, and choose silhouettes with sleek, simplistic lines that shape and drape your gorgeous lines. Most importantly: dress to suit your shape and personality! Bottom heavy: pear shape Look for an A-line shape in dark shades, or with a small pattern, that just drapes across possibly the widest part of your body. You can have a party from the waist up though; use patterns, full sleeves and wider necklines to balance your hip area. Top heavy: inverted triangle or rectangle Ladies, keep your necklines close, and opt for a set-in sleeve and show some skin — not too much though! Create some volume from the waist down to add balance to a wide shoulder. Straight up and down: rectangle My shape. I got the IKEA flat-pack: straight up and down, with no bottom! Look for waist creation, draping and angles. A full skirt and fitted top will give the illusion of a waist... and vice versa. Dangerous curves: hourglass What we all wouldn't give for these dimensions! Because your top will be the same size as your bottom, you have a small window of opportunity to create a waist. Do not wear anything boxy! Keep things in proportion and sexy. Round or oval Look at your best feature. Your shape is made for an empire line (especially with a higher waist); use angles and layers to give the illusion of a waist. It’s all smoke and mirrors! See you at the track! Stay stylish.

he good news. Lipstick is a quick solution to lifting your mood and looking like you’ve got your act together. A simple pickme-up for the time poor. The bad news. Your lips are shrinking with age. Lips begin to thin for the same reason your skin sags: a natural decline in collagen. Hence the mad dash for injectables and fillers. We can’t all have Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s full lips. The simple non-invasive answer is genuinely hydrating lipsticks and lip balms that treat and inject moisture into your lips. Given the average woman eats half a kilo of lipstick a year, a 100% natural formula packed with hydrating plant ingredients is the way to go. But I know, you want your lipstick to stay all day and you’re questioning whether natural formulas can deliver, right? They absolutely can. It’s all about layering and finding a pigment-rich lipstick. Start with a stain all over your lips. Line your lips – and colour them in – with liner. Slick on a lipstick with colour that packs a punch. Line the outside border of your lips again. And yes, there really is a red lipstick for everyone – it’s just a matter of trying a bunch on. Generally, cool skin undertone suits bluer pinkish raspberry, wine and vampy reds and warm skin undertone suits orangey or brick reds. How to use stress to your advantage Michelle Gibbings, author, change leadership and career expert, and Founder of Change Meridian, teaches us how to make the most of stress ressure! Some people hate it, while other people thrive on it. While everyone reacts to pressure differently, what’s common is that pressure is part of the everyday working life for many of us. There’s the constant juggle of tasks, competing requests for attention, ever-shifting deadlines and expectations and likely a demanding boss. Understanding how to use pressure as a tool for progress is critical. Find your Goldilocks zone A certain amount of pressure is good for you because it helps motivate you to act and keeps you focused. This is because when you experience the right amount of challenge and interest, chemicals are released in your brain (noradrenaline and dopamine), making you more alert, motivated and ready to learn. Researchers and

educators often refer to this as the Goldilocks zone. This is the zone of optimal performance where you are working on a task or learning something that is neither too hard, nor too easy. Just like the children’s story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears it is ‘just right’. This zone has parallel ideas with Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of ‘flow’, which is a state you experience when you have the right level of skill and the right amount of challenge. If one of those elements is missing, you’ll either end up anxious, bored or somewhere in-between. Being in flow can be characterised as feeling like you are ‘in the zone’ or ‘in your groove’. It is when you find work almost effortless. You reach this peak when you are working on things that challenge you, but you feel equipped to rise to that challenge. Mihaly said:“The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times… The best moments usually occur if a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.” 34

Ask yourself: > What new skill am I learning? > How am I seeking to stretch my capabilities? > Am I looking out for opportunities to take on new experiences? Pick your frame You can’t control what happens to you every day. You can, however, choose your response by noticing your feelings, reactions and where you focus your attention. You can reflect or ruminate. Whilst both practices require you to look back, the emphasis and focus is different. It’s easy to ruminate and become stressed. You run the scenario in your head again and again — trying to rewrite how the event unfolded. It becomes like a broken record, which keeps spinning and there is no off switch. When you ruminate you aren’t being productive with your thoughts because the thinking process doesn’t reach a conclusion. Research shows that rumination can lead to a range of negative outcomes: depression, anxiety, and over-eating and drinking, for example. When you reflect you think about the situation, focus on uncovering what you have learned, how you were feeling and identifying what you would do differently next time. It requires a growth mindset so you can generate insights as to the cause of the situation and is outcome focused. To focus on reflection, ask yourself: > How did I feel at the beginning, during and end of the situation, and why? > How did those feelings impact what I said and did? > What do I think was going on for the other person/ people involved? > What would I do differently next time, and how would that change the outcome? Welcome the growth Stress often arises at work when you are being asked to do something new. It may be a new boss, using a new system, or being expected to take on board a new way of working. With any form of change there is a period of discomfort. In fact, if you aren’t feeling uncomfortable it’s pretty likely you aren’t doing or learning anything new. The discomfort you feel is your brain’s ways of alerting you to the fact that you are doing something new. So rather than labelling the discomfort as ‘bad’, accept it and embrace it as a ‘good’ sign. Ask yourself: > Am I being reactive or responsive? > Am I noticing how I am feeling and taking the time to stop, breathe, reflect and then respond? > What self-care practices (i.e. exercise, eating well, meditating, gratitude practices and the like) am I using to release the pressure valve? In the modern workplace pressure and stress are inevitable. Your success will be decided by whether you use those feelings to accelerate your growth and progress, or hold you back.

Do I need a personal trainer for my health and fitness? JEFF OSBORNE FROM VISION PERSONAL TRAINING BUNDALL TELLS US WHY GETTING A PT IS THE BEST DECISION YOU’LL MAKE IN GETTING SUMMER READY

know what you are thinking… of course, the personal trainer is going to say that you do! It’s true, my opinion is biased. Mainly because of what I have seen and experienced in my near 20 years as a personal trainer. I don’t think everyone ‘needs’ a personal trainer. I do believe that most people will benefit from one — the rare exception is the super dedicated, self-disciplined, health and fitnessobsessed person that never misses a workout and puts in every time! For the rest of us, there is much to be gained from having a personal trainer. For me, the saddest thing is people who join a gym, then don't go for ten of the 12 months that they pay for it. Unfortunately, most ‘gyms’ rely on 70 per cent or more of their members to do exactly this! Imagine being in a business where you hope that 3/4 of the people that buy your product, don’t use it. This year at our studio, 95.2 per cent of our members have done all their sessions. That is benefit #1 of having a personal trainer! You actually use what you pay for. If you are one of the seven out of ten people that don’t use your gym membership, you are wasting money! It is costing you on average $100 a visit if you only use it for a few months. You can get a lot of personal training for that money! Accountability! Having an appointment, someone waiting for you is the biggest reason why I have a personal trainer myself. I know that if I don’t have a session booked in, I will walk straight past the equipment, straight up to my office, get busy until

“it’s not just about weight loss,

it’s time to pick up the kids and repeat. When it comes to exercise, the number one factor that determines your results is if you consistently do the program. If you are in the gym, doing the work and not seeing the results you think you deserve, you are the other candidate for having a personal trainer. Not many people will work at the intensity that they will with a great trainer. However, the biggest thing is, you may not be doing the right things in the gym or in the kitchen. There is nothing worse than putting in the effort and not getting the results. If you are this person then you are wasting time as well as money.

For me, the saddest thing is people who join a gym, then don't go for ten of the 12 months that they pay for it. One thing I am super proud of at Vision Personal Training is that we are the experts in knowing what is realistic for you to achieve and designing a specific program that guarantees you will achieve that goal, or we give you all your money back and train you for free until you do. If you want to be that confident in seeing results, maybe it’s time you came to see Vision. It will be the last weight loss program you ever need to start!

WORKING

pains

Experiencing pain from working at a computer? Here’s how to manage repetitive strain injury (RSI) ny sufferer of repetitive strain injury (RSI) will confirm that it’s not something to be brushed aside. And unfortunately, with well over half of us now working behind computers for much of the day, RSI pain is on the rise. Estimates suggest that up to 10 per cent of working people are impacted, with some experiencing RSI so badly that they need to leave their jobs because of the pain. Obviously, most people can’t get up and walk away from work. If the nature of your job as it is now, means using a computer, your other likely options for employment probably also require using a computer. This means the only solution is to manage and treat the condition. Fortunately, it is treatable. Diagnosis RSI presents slightly differently for everyone, but it’s usually in the arms – anywhere from fingers and wrists to shoulders and neck (or all along the arm and into the neck). The most common symptoms of RSI are pain, aching, numbing or tenderness and stiffness in the upper body. You’re likely to notice these symptoms when carrying out a particular action, like typing or using a computer mouse. You can confirm RSI with a GP who may also check for other conditions like carpal

tunnel syndrome and arthritis, as well as offer advice on posture or a referral to a physiotherapist. Work environment The first thing you can do to improve RSI is to address your office environment. Review your desk space and set up your keyboard to be in front of you when you are typing. Leave a gap of around 10-15cm between the front of the desk and your keyboard. If you regularly use a mouse, make sure it is as close as possible to you to avoid added strain. If your employer can’t provide advice or an official desk assessment, visit rsi.org.au for more information (search for the ‘using a computer’ section). Keep a note of when symptoms flare up and see if you can identify the activities that exacerbated it. Maintain a diary of this information – it’s also helpful in larger organisations for you to show this to your manager should you require more suitable equipment (change of chair, desk, screen raisers, specialised mouse).

Self-care Anything that gets you out of your seat and breaks up repetitive movements will be beneficial for your overall health. It can also help prevent RSI from developing in the first place. On your breaks away from your desk, don’t jump straight onto your phone. Scrolling is bad for RSI! Go for walks, relax your body and mind at least a few times each day. Treatment Hot/cold packs can help alleviate symptoms by soothing inflammation and stiffness. For day to day support, elasticated and splinted supports may stabilise the wrist and hand, aiding in pain management and easing symptoms. A physiotherapist can advise on what treatment is best and will recommend regular exercises for you to do. Alternative therapies such as creams and supplements may also assist.Your local Chempro Chemist will be able to help you decide which treatments you may benefit from.

COLOMBIA’S

RAINBOW RIVER If you’re looking for somewhere off the beaten track that will generate some impressive photos when visiting Colombia, Amanda O’Brien suggests you check out Cano Cristales ano Cristales is known as Colombia’s ‘Rainbow River’. This stunning river is created by unique biology phenomenon that only takes place between the wet and the dry seasons and when the water level is just right. The Cano Cristales river floor is lined by a plant called Macarenia Clavigera. This plant is only exposed to the sun when the water level drops between the wet and dry season. When this happens, the plant turns a brilliant shade of red. The red is offset by the green of surrounding plants, the blue of the sky, the sand and it erupts into a veritable rainbow of colour. The Rainbow River is normally visible between July and November — albeit it will be at its most dazzling for only a few weeks of this period driven by water levels. Getting ready to visit Cano Cristales It isn’t easy to access this wonder of nature. The river is in a national park called Serrania de la Macarena. It is difficult to access the park from the road. The easiest way to reach Cano Cristales is to take a flight from Bogota airport to the town of La Macarena.

Permits to access the national park are limited and can only be purchased through approved travel agents. As this phenomenon is entirely driven by nature, park officials are understandably concerned about upsetting the delicate ecological balance. Upon arrival into La Macarena, all visitors attend a full briefing at the tourism office. Visitors must choose between wearing sunscreen or going swimming in the river as the introduction of man-made products like sunscreen could interfere with the river’s biology. It is HOT at this time of the year in Cano Cristales, so choosing between sunscreen and swimming in a national park with very little shade is a difficult choice! A little more history Cano Cristales only opened to tourism in 2009. This is because the region was under the control of guerrilla groups and the government was unable to guarantee the safety of tourists. This, combined with the difficulty of accessing the area, means that tourist numbers are quite low. It also means that hotel and eating options can be

limited. I would suggest having one of the approved tourism agencies organise your access to the park, accommodation and meals. Try visiting online: impulsetravel.co and search ‘Cano Cristales’. Visiting Cano Cristales Most tours to the area are for three or five days. I chose to take a three-day tour, which was more than enough time to experience the Rainbow River. Boats leave the town of La Macarena to transport visitors to Serrania de la Macarena national park. There are key spots along the river which are known for having the most vibrant displays and these are where tours visit over the two days. There is a lot of walking through a hot and humid national park as well as a bit of low-level climbing in considerable heat. There is nowhere to purchase food or water so visitors must bring this into the park and carry it themselves. If you have chosen to go without sunscreen there are several places in the lake where swimming is allowed. This is very welcome in the extreme heat and humidity around Cano Cristales.

While Cano Cristales is not an easy place to access (even once you have arrived at the national park!), the stunning array of colours, little waterfalls, other-worldly light and rocks, made it worth every sweaty second. GET IT I MONEY

Enjoying the

bloom

Les McGuire ADFS(FP), Principal of Future Proof Financial, teaches us to how to enjoy what we’ve worked hard for in the colder months, with responsibility and style

s we move through spring, the excitement builds. The choice of clothing becomes dresses, shorts and singlets. There are so many activities, so many jobs to do, but where do we start? I constantly meet with people with the common struggle: cash flow. How can we spring clean our budget and have more money to do the things we want, like that household renovation? Spring seems to be a perfect time to pull out the tools, refresh the bathroom, tinker with the kitchen, give the home a makeover. Sound expensive? It certainly can be. More people now on a budget are buying flat-pack cabinets, offcuts of stone, second-hand sinks, taps, adhesive splashbacks, which can slash the inventory prices to focus on doing more for less. There is no replacement for licensed tradespeople, however, many of us can’t afford this at every stage. There is so much information available though — research, decide where to invest in long-lasting quality, when to budget and what you can do yourselves. The other springtime activity we all love is going to the race track! You don’t need to bet to have fun at the GG’s; getting dressed up, and free-flowing champagne and beer — wow hold me back. If you do go to the track with friends, I find the best way to have a great day out is pool money together to create your own betting kitty. Take turns punting, celebrate the wins, and if you lose the loss will be minimal, and everyone will be in the same boat win, lose or draw. On a serious note, what other things can be considered to ensure that your money is working optimally? It is hard to earn a decent return having money in the bank. Consider investing some money no matter how small into a new investment strategy using managed funds or shares. Every week contribute a little bit October 2019

to the investments and watch the money compound and grow. When money is invested in the right options, it is 100 per cent liquid, meaning you have access to the money as required. One of the greatest secrets to investing is the time in the market. History shows that the compounded returns over time can add up to a significant sum of money. Start by having your own personal emergency fund; usually we find this can be anywhere from $100 to $10,000. Use any additional money to start investing. The magic happens by purchasing managed funds or shares at various times and values. No matter if the share market is up or down the strategy, overtime will still work

October 2019

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat your oven to 200C and line a baking tray with baking paper. Lay your sliced sweet potato out on the tray so as they don't overlap. Place in the oven to get nice and crispy, about 15 to 20 minutes. Meanwhile, brown your mince in a pan in a little coconut oil. Once browned, add your spices and crushed tomatoes, season with salt and reduce to a simmer for the sauce to thicken up. Next get onto your guacamole and salsa. Combine the ingredients for each in respective bowls and set aside ready for serving. Serve your mince alongside the hot and crispy sweet potato chips, with generous dollops of guacamole and lashings of salsa. Season with salt and enjoy. 44

Banana Berry Hotcakes I love these thick and fluffy hotcakes for a breakfast that feels naughty but is packed full of nice! PREP TIME: 5 Minutes COOKING TIME: 5 Minutes TOTAL TIME: 10 Minutes INGREDIENTS:

Confessions of a 41-year-old student

GET IT I REAL LIFE

Masters student Sam Stein tells us what it’s really like to return to university after years off campus

enrolled at The University of Queensland the year I turned 40. It wasn’t a mid-life crisis as such, rather a brewing of ideas and stagnation fighting to be set free. The news that I had been accepted into a full-time master’s degree — the Masters of Writing, Editing and Publishing — was both exciting and terrifying. What had I got myself into? I had been a high school teacher of English and Drama for 14 years, along with a taste of leadership positions that had failed to satisfy, so I really needed a new challenge. It’s quite funny how friends and family responded to the news, many were excited for me, but others responded with, “Better you than me,” or, “Don’t be that annoying mature student that asks all the questions or delivers unnecessary monologues in lectures.’’ So, I entered the world of toga parties and poor students living on a diet of two-minute noodles. I went into this with eyes wide open, understanding that my university days of the late 90s early 2000s was a long time ago and it would have all changed. But had it? Look, maybe it was the fact 90s fashion was back in full force at the beginning of 2019, or maybe it was the familiar smells of coffee and hangovers blowing across the Great Court of the St Lucia campus that day. But, for a moment I felt like no time had passed. That was until, I saw some

of the students in my class. There were at least five students who looked about 12, interspersed with some Gen X and Millennials. It was quite a strange feeling, knowing three years before I could’ve been their teacher. I felt my 40 years for most of the first term. However, with time, I began to see just how valuable the differences in age could be in this learning environment. We were learning from each other and finding a connection through books. There are so many changes that make life easier as a student; the fact that the

student in the late 90s, is that there is no photographic evidence of my university party days online and that I was able to study without being distracted by constant text messages or notifications. But did that make me a better student? No, I still got distracted by the invite to a party, or just the smell of alcohol accompanied by some great tunes. The reality is that no matter the changes, university still requires you to attend class and work hard on the course work in order to obtain the degree — no matter your

“So, I entered the world of toga parties and poor students living on a diet of two-minute noodles.” library is all online, for example — no more waiting for that one textbook everyone has requested or trying to find that periodical that you needed, that had disappeared without a trace. Yes, the technology has advanced life at university and yet, it could also be a hindrance. Students are still coming together under trees, at tables or in sporting competitions, but the dominant presence of phones is something that I am glad I didn’t have to worry about those many years ago. The bonus of being a

age. Yes, I wish I could do my assignments the night before and pull an all-nighter, but I can’t. I know my limitations. I work a lot smarter today. I used to think my writing was better under that stress of the ‘night before’, but the wisdom of my 40s has shown me that I am a better student working consistently towards my goal. Through these courses, I feel really hopeful about the future and appreciate this opportunity to be exposed to a variety of wonderful humans that enhance my university experience as a 41-year-old.

Taurus April 20 – May 21

Libra September 22 – October 23

Gemini May 21 – June 21

Libran’s are having a moment in the Sun, this October. Venus has settled into your sign, and it’s a lovely time to just be. You can absorb the harmony and pleasures created by having so much energy concentrated in your sign. 25 October sees the focus shift, up until that point, you have 25 days to really connect to your cores centre and values. Creating balance. Spring colour: turquoise — for clear vision, happiness and fortune.

Scorpio October 23 – November 22

October sees Mars, your traditional ruler, in Libra. Libra is a place where Mars can really backfire or not operate rationally. Rules for October: sit tight. Mars will be stirring up your private or subconscious realms. Bad dreams or sleep deprivation could be an issue. But come 27 October, Mars returns home, and you feel its gravitas. You become supercharged. Spring colour: pomegranate — one colour, so many tales and mysteries.

Sagittarius November 22 – December 22

Aquarius January 21 – February 19

Saturn is Aquarius’ traditional ruler, and speaks to their strength of character, and talents for building community. Saturn is your magic superpower. Currently its working deep within, setting you up for a big reveal in late 2020. A reveal that will be more successful than you ever imagined. October allows for positive un-interfered progress. Spring colour: silver — doing the work, doesn’t mean you need to blend in.

Pisces February 19 – March 20

The saving grace of 2019 is having Jupiter, your ruler, home in Sagittarius. Single handily creating optimism and buoyancy that has underpinned this year, despite its challenges. Occurring every 12 years, only 2 months remain. You have your mojo back, it really is time to put all your big visions into action, if you haven’t already. Spring colour: coral — adventurous, playful and spirited.

4 October, the Moon conjoins your traditional ruler, Jupiter. Allowing prosperity and nourishment of larger visions and beliefs. 11 October allows opportunity to dive deep into your imaginative side, as the Moon joins Neptune. The time inbetween, Jupiter’s positivity beams from Sagittarius this month, creates optimism and buoyancy anchoring your relationships, helping to propel you forward. Spring colour: ice blue — a coolness that never fully reveals it’s all.

Saturn, your ruler is throwing up challenges, to the big picture since arriving home to Capricorn in 2018. This is part of a new 30-year cycle; auditing and evaluation are core to this strength testing. October allows for new insights, without too much challenge, a great time to celebrate the progress made thus far. Spring colour: copper — unique, conductive and malleable in all situations

5 October sees your ruler Mars enter Libra, creating frustration or an inability to get things done quickly. The upshot is — it’s the perfect time to rest, restock, and enjoy social settings. A word of advice though, it’s best to share responsibilities. Mars in Libra can be a bit like a bull in a china shop, you don’t want to come off as the bull. Spring colour: scarlet — attention, passion and independence.

Capricorn December 22 – January 20

Aries March 20 – April 19

Venus your ruler is recharging in Libra, until it enters Scorpio on 10 October. Venus in Scorpio shifts gears to a much slower and grinding pace; this might feel like an intensification of your desires and passions. Taureans might feel more intuitive and curious, as Venus wanders through the watery depths. Spring colour: emerald — honouring Venus and all her earthly pleasures.

4 October sees Mercury move from egalitarian Libra, to investigative Scorpio. Opportunities could lead you down the proverbial rabbit hole. Anyone, or anything, stimulating your Mercurial side will have a longer lifespan than initially expected. Venus conjoining Mercury on 31 October makes you completely irresistible. Spring colour: lemon — ethereal and celestial

Cancer

June 21 – July 22

The Moon is the closest planet to Earth, and constantly moves, changing in form, every 28 days. The Full Moon in Aries on 14 October brings into focus things that YOU want, with regards to care and nurture. The New Moon in Scorpio on 28 October, is perfect for ditching and letting go of any feelings or habits that are not serving you. Spring colour: gold — to shimmer on every horizon

Virgo August 23 - September 22

Mercury, your ruler, develops an obsessive quality, upon entering Scorpio on 4 October. This is excellent for activating the details and analysis, that the Virgo eye is famed for. Mercury in Scorpio is also great at emotional hooks, so allocate time to step away from situations that become emotionally too demanding or feel manipulative. Spring colour: moss green — lively, organic and adaptable.
