ho will join me in exclaiming, “September is going to be great!”? It’s warming up, the sun is shining, we’ve got Sally Pearson, Sarah Bombell and all our local Olympic champions back on home soil, and generally, life is pretty positive; or at least, now is a nice time to try and look at it as such. While I’m a little freaked out about how close we are to Christmas (are they decorations in the stores already?), I’m attempting to take a step back and enjoy the ‘now’. The sunny days we’re experiencing outside make me feel like ducking out of the office for some by-thepool-with-a-cocktail time. Perhaps I could write this type of activity off as ‘work’, being that I’d most definitely have my copy of Fifty Shades of Grey next to me (and my cocktail)? It is, after all, our ‘passion’ issue, therefore somewhat of a requirement to see what all the hype is about - all in the name of ‘research’, (although doubtful the boss would let me go to work by the pool ... without her)! The Get it girls are actually quite excited about this special September issue. We’ve compiled what we believe to be useful, interesting reads on how to inject some spark back into your relationship, as well as a guide on not just what indicates ‘cheating behaviour’, but what to do about it as well. This month we welcome to the team popular local fashion journalist and blogger, Missy Robinson. Each month she will bring the hottest trends, as well as cool events and celebrity news to Get it’s pages (and online - don’t forget to find us on Facebook and Twitter). As always we’d love to hear your feedback. Let us know what you’ve enjoyed in this issue or what you might like to read about it future issues. H

ey folks, how are we all? Don’t you just love this time of year? I know it’s still a little brisk in the mornings but man, we’re getting some days that are absolute pearlers! Perfect days to take the loved ones for an outing. I’ve recently done the Tambourine thing, you know, the Gallery walk, cheese factory, distillery and wineries. What a great day out, though I would have had more fun if I wasn’t the designated driver. Somebody has to do it, but I still had an awesome day. I also recently visited The Yellow Marlin restaurant in Broadbeach where I wined and dined with somebody special to me. What a great little place. Seafood platter entree for two that was to die for. Tassie scallops, prawns, oysters, battered fish, salad and salt & pepper calamari. Everything was cooked to perfection. The calamari just melts in your mouth. This was all followed by barramundi for me and Atlantic salmon for my partner. With a couple of light beers, very enthusiastic staff and a fantastic atmosphere it was a night well spent. Everything on the menu looked mouth-watering and the best part was that it was all very reasonably priced. I can highly recommend The Yellow Marlin and if you see me there, the catch cry is, “Shorty’s Shout”, and I will gladly buy a round for you (not your twenty mates though). Now guys, please forgive because I’m going to have a little whinge, but a relevant one I think. Lots of people out there have experienced failed marriages and therefore had to deal with everyone’s nemesis - the

June 2012

dreaded CSA (Child Support Agency). Luckily when I divorced, my children were grown up. I have a male friend who has had full custody of his 13-year-old son for the past five years. He’s a loving, caring father that is well respected by everyone. CSA deems that his ex has to pay him child support, but never enforce it when the money ceases to be paid. I know, it works both ways, so I’m not saying all the dads are up-to-date either. We all have arguments with our kids and after one such argument, my friend’s son went to stay with his mother for a couple of weeks. Mum rang CSA and said the boy was now living with her on a permanent basis. They didn’t even ring him to confirm it. He then lost the maintenance payments and had to begin paying her. Of course, the son returned to his father a week or so later but when he contacted CSA to inform them of this, they put him through the mill with lots of forms, affidavits and statutory declarations to prove the son was living with him again! What took his ex-wife one phone call to change has taken him over a month and a lot of money (being on hold to CSA using a mobile phone for over 40-minutes each time he rang) to reverse the situation. Why? People, whether you are a mum or dad, the money you pay in child support is for the upbringing of your child! How often have I heard, “I’m not giving that so-and-so any money!” or “He left me for a younger woman, why should I pay him anything?” Wake up folks, it’s for your children so no matter how much you hate your ex don’t

12

take it out on the kids! Wow, I feel so much better now! Nothing like a good vent! Sorry if I have offended anyone but I call ‘em as I see ‘em! Last of all I would like to congratulate all our Olympians on a sterling effort. Despite all the negative publicity, we have to remember that in the past Australia set the benchmark in a lot of sports, and it just so happens that other countries have gotten a lot better. It’s not necessarily that Australia has gotten worse!! Well done guys, you made us proud: AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE! Enjoy yourselves to the max but do everything in moderation. Drop me an email or look me up on Facebook (I’m the golden retriever dog sitting at the laptop). Remember, don’t drink Drive (it’s a laundry detergent). That’s it, I’m done, but as Arnie says, “I’ll be back”! The Short One

Snap Shot local profile

Local photographer, and Get it’s personal fashion guru, Dan Molloy shares his secrets of success.

F

rom an early age, Gold Coast photographer Dan Malloy knew style and imagery were the only things that made him tick. From cheeky beginnings at school skipping class to spend hours in the dark room, to travelling internationally on huge cruise ships capturing all the thrills and spills of tourists holidaying in paradise, his inherent desire to involve himself in the photography world was one he simply couldn’t ignore. Even as a kid, Dan found himself spellbound by his mother’s camera. “I would always use it without film in it and pretend to take photos of my sister. I remember being really young and fascinated with looking through the view finder and hearing the sound of the motor taking a snap. I guess that’s where it all started.” Fast forward to 2012, and Dan has reignited his true love for photography by honing in on glamorous models in the fashion industry. Merging his corporate roots with timeless chic, Dan’s innovative and inspiring stills reflect the sense of class and confidence he exudes himself. Some say it takes guts to pursue your goals, Dan says it takes hard work and lots of determination. “[Fashion photography] is a very hard industry to crack into; there are a lot of fantastic talented photographers out there. Networking plays a huge part in this industry [but] it’s also a state of mind. If you want something bad enough, you’ll make it happen.” After high school, Dan packed up his entire life in New Zealand to continue his photography studies. “I attended Uni for three September 2012

years,” he says. “I chose fashion as a major in my last year of Uni because I was really into the creative side; photographing people in obscure locations wearing crazy outfits was a real attraction for me. I felt as if I could be as creative as I wanted and fashion photography is so broad, there’s an element of ‘anything goes’ sometimes.” Dan specialises in model portfolios, fashion editorials and advertising campaigns. “Whatever the client’s photographic needs, I’m able to offer a relaxed and professional service,” he says. Having experienced a variety of photography disciplines ensures his ability to adapt and create the strongest imagery for his clients. Dan puts his passion and creativity behind all jobs presented and by working closely with his clients and their vision, creates original and engaging imagery that far exceeds their expectations every times. “I love being able to take someone else’s vision, a fashion designer for example, and turning that vision into a reality through photography.” When it comes to the fierce fashion world, Dan certainly has what it takes. As he grows his business, he wants to share the secrets to achieving his dream with other fashionistas and photographers out there. So we asked him to answer our quick Q&A. In 10 years you see yourself… Shooting fashion editorials internationally. My ultimate goal is to shoot for Vogue someday and there are a few models I’d love to photograph. Top of that list is Miranda Kerr.

12

Take me through the day in the life of a photographer. If it’s a shoot day it can be full on, in a good way though. It’s very exciting; my creative side really comes out. If it’s not shoot day, it’s editing day...or editing night. Editing can be a very creative and exciting process too. What tools are a must-have for you? My reflectors and lighting equipment. Oh, and an extra pair of hands is always good to have. Many don’t believe in using Photoshop to “alter” the way someone looks. What are your views on the matter? I believe it serves a purpose for some things, but it can be used in negative ways too. I understand both sides of this conflict and respect both views. Any advice for youngsters wanting to get into photography? If you love it, jump in and go for it! Experiment with all genres, ask lots of questions, take criticism positively and never stop learning. Where can we find you? My new studio is conveniently located in central Burleigh Heads. It’s perfect because I can have fashion designers come to me and have their collections photographed in my studio and the whole shoot is contained within the studio. It makes life a lot easier and allows me to work more efficiently. danmalloyphotography.com

Cosentino “The Grand Illusionist” Where Nothing Is Impossible…

A

s a young boy, nervously performing a sleight of hand trick for his father, Cosentino knew that magic was his calling. The “French Drop” involved some very simple moves with a coin. He recalls nervously approaching his father and asking him to watch closely as he masterfully made the coin vanish. Shocked as his father replied, “How did you do that?”, that single moment was the turning point for what was the start of his magical journey. At the age of 17, fresh out of high school, Cosentino auditioned for Cirque Du Soleil and landed his first international contract. With no other family members in the entertainment industry, he is completely selftaught. When not performing, this daredevil performer is practicing, inventing new ideas or just reading about the craft even collecting old vintage magic memorabilia. His studio is decked out with rare classic posters of magicians from a time forgotten and books written and signed by legendary Harry Houdini as well as letters from famous magicians. Cosentino says “I’m very much in love with my craft and the beauty of it, so I aim to learn and consume as much as possible. “ Cosentino was first brought to Australia’s attention after coming runner up on high rating show Australia’s Got Talent last year. He tells Get It “In the past, Australia has seen magic as a novelty and there has never been a famous Australian magician. Nobody has been able to break that mould and a magician has September 2012

never really captured Australia’s imagination. Australia’s Got Talent, allowed me to do this. I have had so many people come up to me on the street and say,” I’ve never liked magic, but I love what you did on the show”. It’s a strange comment when you think about it, but it shows how people felt about magic and illusion. By showing Australia how beautiful ‘magic’ is when it’s executed correctly and done with passion they embraced it. I’m paving and laying the foundations for future magicians.” Being on the show changed his life dramatically exposing him to an audience of 3.1 million people. Since the show he has signed to Melbourne Artist Management heavyweight Ralph Carr, landed a TV special with Channel 7, a DVD distribution deal with SONY as well as a theatre promoter. The sky is the limit for this supercharged showman. How do you come up with your illusions i.e. the concepts? I try to imagine what I would like to see if I was in the audience. It’s a tough profession because ‘magic’ by its definition means ‘nothing is impossible’ so anything goes. Movies, comic books and action heroes inspire me. They give me many great ideas, which are often crazy and extremely dangerous. Training for his elaborate escapes hasn’t come without the perils. Concussions, emergency room visits, stitches to the head, sprained ankles and every bump and cut in between. However as he puts it “When I’m

14

on stage, I have to put all that behind me and perform with no fear. Fear is a motivator but it can also wreak-havoc on your mind. I must be clear and focused and really psych myself up for all my stunts and escapes so that nothing goes wrong.” Idolising David Copperfield, the Magician of the Century, who in the 80’s and 90’s changed the “magic game” forever. Cosentino says “He altered the perception of magic, making it sexy, dramatic and spectacular. Today I see him even more as an idol because I now understand all the hard work he did and how difficult it must have been.” Having achieved so much more than he could have imagined as three times Australian Award Winning magician, a Guinness World Record holder and a nominee for the prestigious Helpmann Awards. The Helpmann Awards (TONY Award equivalent) is the pinnacle industry event for Australia’s performance industry, recognising the very best in live performance. So what is next on the cards for this “Grand Illusionist”? With a TV Special coming out later this year on Channel 7 then a huge publicity stunt planned, long term, Cosentino plans to continue to build and change Australia’s perception of his art form, calling it “The Magic Revolution”.After that he will push forward until he reaches his goal of performing on Broadway with his own show. The sky is the limit for this master conjurer so stay tuned…

Yoga body, inspired mind

Local wellness consultant and yoga instructor with more than twenty years experience, Madonna Williams, offers an insight into the popular practice, and encourages us with wise words: move your body, nourish the soul, be yourself.

I

remember the first Yoga class I did over 15 years ago. I thought it was so difficult to perform many of the poses, let alone hold the stretches for a sustained period of time. I remember the judgment in my mind and the resistance in my body; tight muscles and stiff joints seemed to be stuck! I had absolutely no aspiration to be a Yoga teacher or even to attend regular classes. I ventured into the class with an apathetic and somewhat skeptical attitude in search of relaxation, stress relief and dealing with grief at the time. Little did I know, the deep breathing exercises, powerful postures, and the final pose of ‘Savasana’/ Corpse would change my life forever. Yoga is about seeking change. Whether it’s change in the flexibility of your hips, to change your mood, energy, your attitude, current state of health, or even deeper changes in a spiritual approach to life. Every week I see changes in Yoga students. Change in body shape, attitudes, old injuries healing or releasing, more confidence, contentment, less fear and aggression. They are more balanced, stronger and carefree. Yoga helps our bodies yield and surrender, becoming more supple and relaxed, and as the body yields the mind does too. The body and mind are so connected that every mental knot has a connected physical knot in the body, and vice versa. Yoga postures, meditation and breathing exercises help to release these knots and create body and mind harmony. The beginning of most Yoga classes is dedicated to the breath, feeling more centered and balanced, then creating an intention or purpose for the class. The intention is created to help others, dedicate positive thoughts to the universe or someone we know who needs help. You can also create a personal intention for yourself to nurture your inner needs and dreams. Over time, feelings become more truthful beyond our life stories and dramas, or the “story of me”. Regular practice helps September 2012

to let go of the “me story” mentality and develops more strength, courage and positive energy which can overflow into improving relationships. After the warm-up, a Yoga class moves through a series of postures covering every muscle, limb, meridian and chakra of the body. The practice becomes a sweet blessing in disguise as the postures are not just physical stretches but ingenious tools of transformation for our whole wellbeing. Every posture has a specific benefit - like a certain vitamin or nutrient; every posture enhances a specific change physically, emotionally and mentally, resulting in a shift of energy towards a more balanced state. At the end of the class we dedicate our blessings to firstly, the mind (for positive thoughts, free of judgment towards ourselves and others), secondly, to the voice (for truth, wisdom and loving words), and finally the heart (to feel love, compassion gratitude and joy). When you leave a Yoga class you walk lightly with a freer spirit, ease and a sense of overcoming your own boundaries and fears. Over time you feel more sensual, life becomes more effortless and you develop an awareness that no matter what life delivers on the surface, the true essence of who you are never changes. Yoga offers a lifestyle transformation opportunity to achieve fitness, wellness and vitality. With practice, you can overcome not only the physical limitations you may feel throughout your first few yoga classes, but you will develop a clearer mind and healthier physical state. This all results in a more positive life balance at work, through everyday life and importantly, in your most cherished relationships. Have a question on Yoga? Ask Madonna at www.zensoulyoga.com, or Tweet her, @madonnaleah.

50 shades with Sarah Blinco

Are the EL James Fifty Shades books an innocent bit of fun for those lacking lust in their own lives, or do they encourage readers to want for more − outside of their own bedrooms? Sarah Blinco investigates the phenomenon and realities associated with the world the books portray.

N

ot since the wizardry of Harry Potter and bloodthirsty bite of Twilight has there been such a buzz surrounding a series of books. The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy has now outdone its contemporary popular fiction counterparts in sales statistics to become the fastest selling read to hit a million; with a vast majority of those purchases made online in the form of e-books. With over 20-million copies of Fifty Shades of Grey now in the hot little hands of enthusiasts the world over (myself included) it seems nearly impossible that you wouldn’t have heard anything on this series.

September 2012

Kindles and e-readers have been steaming up with copies of the much-talked-about EL James books since early this year. Interestingly, a popular theory around the successful e-sales of this product is that consumers are enjoying the ‘anonymity’ of purchasing downloads of the racy novels which they can then read in ultimate privacy. Why the need for this privacy? Well, for a start the series has been dubbed ‘mummy porn’, and as I devoured chapter after chapter I began to understand why. If you’re spotted on the train on a long commute reading one of these books, onlookers would probably guess at some point you’re going to be feeling a little ... er ... hot under the collar. It’s quite addictive, not to mention, um ... ‘passionate’. I really did hold off on the lure of this series didn’t want my partner of 11 years getting the wrong idea about the reasons why I’m reading the books! After all, aren’t we, the long-term ‘relationshippers’, and mothers of the world, the ultimate target market for this so-called ‘mummy porn’? After witnessing the ‘effect’ on Australian readers who leave hundreds of messages on discussion threads, forums, Twitter, blogs and even the Sunrise Facebook site each day, I felt I had to know what all the fuss was about. I decided to take the plunge the old fashioned way − at a bookstore. After a short discussion with the cashier while handing over my $12.95 for book one, Fifty Shades of Grey, it was determined once again there is a particular ‘audience’ for James’ fiction. “I might give them a miss for a while − not really in the right mood,” quips the pretty, heavily pregnant girl behind the counter. “You enjoy it though,” she adds with a wry smile. As it happened, I had a weekend to myself said partner of 11 years was off on a weekend

18

away. It could be said that I was ‘bored’, but I maintain this was all in the name of research. Page after addictive page ... all in the name of research. A day later I was one of ‘those people’ online, commenting on my blog that I had already been swept up in ‘Christian Grey’ mania, and already speculating who (my vote is with The Vampire Diaries’ bad boy, Ian Somerhalder) will play the pivotal role in the inevitable screen adaption. You see, turns out that despite the writing being ‘not so perfect’ (a criticism floating around popular media) the story is (in my view) quite appealing. The central character, Ana, is fairly relatable in that she feels like any other average, inexperienced girl − and the ‘Grey’ everyone is speaking of, Christian, is (in the mind’s eye) attractive, charming, rich, sexy, passionate, adventurous − oh, and rather domineering, in case you hadn’t heard. As you may or may not know by now, one of the central activities showcased in this series is ‘S&M’. Passion and lust expressed through whips, canes, leather, harnesses, crops, intimidating ‘red rooms’, bondage, discipline and role playing: the ‘submissive’ and ‘master’ dynamic being fundamental to the entire storyline. This is obviously a whole other reality to what the majority of us are used to, so it’s understandable that part of the allure is the ‘exciting unknown’; an avenue that offers safe escapism and a break from normality. ‘S&M’ is defined by Wikipedia as being: “Sadomasochism... the receiving of pleasure... from acts involving the infliction or reception of pain or humiliation... While the terms sadist and masochist specifically refer to one who either enjoys giving pain (sadist), or one who enjoys receiving pain (masochist), many practitioners of sadomasochism describe themselves as at least somewhat of a

popular of

Passion

switch, or someone who can receive pleasure from either inflicting or receiving pain.” Pretty heavy stuff, but not totally new to ‘current’ pop culture. As you may recall Rihanna sent the concept to the top of the music charts last year with her song and subsequent video for the track S&M. Who is into this kind of ‘passionate’ exchange then? Evidently many groups are in uproar over the whole popularisation of this private world. Some feminist groups are against the concept of women being/playing ‘submissive’; Various psychiatrists are saying this kind of influence messes with our psyche and encourages people to pursue avenues that might not be so favourable in the long run, and religious groups are simply not in favour of it, full stop. Sales figures would indicate there are many people who are not deterred by any of this however, and are not only open to the concepts illustrated in the novels, but are interested in them as well. What does it mean though, that women recently polled in southeast Queensland have stated Fifty Shades of Grey as being the most exciting thing that has happened to them since Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall? Further to this, is it possible that fiction depicting a world probably much more passionate, sexy and exciting (all debatable, I know) than our own, could influence the bored, lonely or unfulfilled to pursue alternative lifestyles and choices at the peril of those they’re currently maintaining relationships with, or not to mention, themselves? I’ve been liaising with a number of fans online trying to source answers to my questions. One fan from Sydney has come back to me saying she’s been inspired by the books. Following a string of bad relationships and subsequent weight gain she had lost interest in life, but something in the books piqued her interest.

She found hope, is out dating and living life again − and she credits the motivation to Fifty Shades. Similarly I’ve been contacted by a male fan via my blog. He’s told me he loves the books; so much so he’s developed his own blog (www.fiftyshadesofdave.blogspot.co.uk) where he writes about the series, chapter by chapter. He’s gathered hundreds of fans who congregate online and they, as a community, discuss and appreciate together, daily! What to make of it all then? Popular Australian sexologist and relationship expert, Dr. Nikki Goldstein, tells us, “In some circumstances people do run the risk of using books like this as a comparison of normality. It is good to encourage people to think outside the box and explore new opportunities in their sex lives, except they shouldn’t feel that after reading a book like this that there is something wrong with theirs. It is harmless fun, however there will always be people who use books like this in the wrong way”. Nikki also offers some healthy advice for those inspired − in one way or another − by the Grey series. “Do not think that after reading this book that in order to have a tantalising sex life that you need to recreate what was done by Anastasia and Mr Grey. Use this just like you should pornography, as a form of entertainment and fantasy. Use it to open your mind and think what you might like to try with your partner. Also if you are having issues sexually with your partner, be careful not to think that reading this book will solve those. It is a great tool to sexual exploration but will not solve everything. If you are interested in something that has been said, make sure you do some research before you have a go,” she adds. Take it all with a grain of salt, read it to learn a little more about an alternative private life

19

you may (or may never) experiment with, or be inspired to try something new! Whatever you decide, Nikki adds there are definitely positives associated with a phenomenon like this. “The book has normalised strong sexual themes for many women and allowing them to discuss sexual desire and fantasies so openly. That is what is so exciting. Stories like this might have been reserved for erotic books and red light districts but you now find that the average suburban mum is picking up the book, fantasying and with no negative reifications,” she concludes. However you choose to react to Fifty Shades of Grey is up to you. In the end, it’s just one more intriguing example of what constitutes ‘popular fiction’ in the year 2012. Got an opinion? Sexy time ...why you need it

Isiah McKimmie is the director of Passionate Spirit Coaching. Her Queensland clientele, as well as fans online, value her useful and helpful advice on keeping passion alive at all ages. She’s taken time out to share ideas with Get it for our sexy ‘passion’ issue. September 2012

M

aintaining passion in a relationship can take time and effort. But keeping that ‘spark’ alive (in and out of the bedroom) has benefits for you and your relationship; some that may surprise you. When you crawl into bed at the end of a long day, sex is often the last thing you feel like. For some women, it becomes just another chore. The number of times I’ve heard, “I don’t care if we never have sex again,” from women who come to see me is astounding. Of course, their partners usually don’t feel the same way and it becomes the cause of tension in many once happy relationships. Maintaining a healthy sex life is an important part of a relationship. It can help sustain the passion and spark that brought you together, and has positive benefits for both of you. It’s important to remember though, that we need to keep the spark alive outside the bedroom too; this is the foundation our nocturnal activities rest on. We’ve heard the health benefits of sex before and they are to be taken seriously: improved cardiac functioning, lowered risk of heart attack and stroke, as well as lower blood pressure. Sex is great exercise! It helps tone muscles and assists with weight loss, and you don’t have to get out of bed to do it! On top of that, sex boosts the immune system, keeping colds and flu at bay; lowers the risk of osteoporosis, and can even help you look younger! Importantly though, sex means the brain releases loads of endorphins, hormones and neurotransmitters (like oxytocin and serotonin) that help you feel happier and more energised.

These hormones and neurotransmitters also work to produce a feeling of being ‘bonded’ or in-love with the person you’re with. How do we re-ignite flames that have simmered to a flicker? How do we ensure our happy relationship stands the test of time and both partners stay happy? I’ve shared the following practical tips with many clients I’ve worked with over the past five years, with fantastic results:

yourself - you’ll feel more energised and will have energy for everyone around you.

Make time for each other You can’t expect fireworks in the bedroom if you’ve barely said two words to each other all day. Make time to just be together, giving your attention to each other - not the television, your blackberry or the kids. Talk to each other, go on a date, do something fun.

Learn to communicate well Especially about what you like and don’t like when it comes to sex. If you don’t communicate about what you enjoy, it’s less likely that you’ll get it and enjoy yourself. People often come to see me experiencing challenges in their sex lives (I am a ‘Sex and Relationship Coach’, after all). What they find after working with me is that not only does their sex life and relationship improve, but other aspects of their lives do too. With a healthy sex life and strong relationship, confidence is increased, work-life improves, and they are generally happier and healthier.

Touch without it leading to sex Sadly, for many women who come to see me, the issue of sex has become such a source of tension in the relationship they don’t even want to be touched anymore - every time they’re touched by their partner, it leads to being asked for sex. Set aside clear times for just touching each other - give each other a foot rub, or neck massage. Or just have a good, old-fashioned kiss and cuddle. Touching releases many of the same hormones as sex and will help you feel ‘connected’ to your partner. Take care of your own needs You’ll never feel like ‘giving’ to someone else when you’re tired, stressed and strung out yourself. Make sure you make time for

Make time for sex Of course you don’t feel like sex when you crawl into bed exhausted and need to get up in six hours, or when you can hear the kids in the next room. Set aside time for having sex - good sex. Spend the night in a hotel, or hire a baby-sitter.

If you are experiencing challenges in your sex life or relationship, consider seeking professional support. We have mechanics to keep cars running smoothly, we have personal trainers to keep fitness up to speed. Sometimes our relationships need support to stay on track too. Remember, if you don’t talk about it you can’t fix it, and sadly in my experience, by the time some people seek help, it’s too late.

Isiah McKimmie is a somatic sex therapist and has been helping people improve their sex lives for the past five years. As a Sex and Relationship Coach she helps women and couples boost their self-love, address sexual challenges and strengthen relationships. Her business, Passionate Spirit (www.passionatespirit.com.au) supports individuals and couples through coaching sessions and an on-line community. You can also find Passionate Spirit Coaching on Facebook where Isiah invites you to ask questions and share experience.

Is your man cheating? September 2012

tell tale signs that he’s doing the dirty on you Words and suggestions by Dr Alex and Marie Ryan, aka The Love Doctors

Ever had that horrible sinking feeling in your stomach? Something that tells you he’s emotionally or actually jumping in the sack with another person? Well, you want to make sure that you are right. After all, you could create more problems in the relationship if you are jumping to conclusions. Let’s break down the tell-tale signs that he’s doing the dirty on you. Not much sex: If your sex life has fallen into a hole, then that is the first sign he might be looking elsewhere. A man has an ego. He prides himself on pleasing a woman. If you’re not having sex regularly or sex is nonexistent, then the early warning signs are there. Things are going pear shaped. Solution: Sex can get boring with the same person. Having sex the same way in the same place makes it boring and not stimulating. You need to add spontaneity to your sex life. Have sex in different rooms in the house (like the kitchen). Spice up your sex life by being spontaneous and different. Happy chappy: Your man will seem happier than normal if he is interacting with another woman. He will feel better about himself. It takes two to tango and your relationship might be an unhappy one. He goes elsewhere to feel complete again and boost his ego. If you find that one day he is looking and acting happier or elated, your warning bells should be ringing. Solution: Without accusing him, ask him why he is happier than normal. You might find that he is happier because he got a promotion, pay rise, or he’s having a good day. If he stumbles with the answer, then let it go for today, and look for the next signs. Mysterious meetings: As he becomes more emotionally involved with another lady, he’ll want to spend time with her. He will make excuses like he has a business trip this weekend. He will also be late home at night and saying he is busy at work. Noticing that he is working harder without any reason should get you delving deeper into his affairs. Solution: When he says he will be working late tonight, ring his mobile from a silent number and see if he answers. If he answers, just say it is you and pause. Listen attentively to his next reaction; does he fumble around? Does he stop and talk to someone else? Does he make up something that sounds false? Act normal and don’t mention anything as yet.

33

Emails + texts: The number one way someone gets sprung cheating is through emails and texts. Yes, the cheater is dumb enough to leave evidence in the form of romantic or sexual emails or texts. By this stage, you are not having much sex, he’s happier than normal (and you are miserable) and mysterious meetings go on. It is your right to know if something is going on. If nothing is going on, your trust in him improves, which is positive for your relationship. Solution: Grab his mobile in front of him and ask, ‘is there anything on here I shouldn’t see?’. If he gets angry at you, suspect something is wrong. If he sees it from your perspective, he is probably not doing anything wrong and you can discuss what is bothering you. Gut feeling: Many of us do not trust our gut feeling. We should. You will sense something is wrong with your relationship. You can also feel a sinking feeling in your stomach, dread or a feeling that somebody just died. All these feelings are warning signs that something is amiss. This is the final straw. You must act now. Solution: Ask him straight out, and unexpectedly for him, whether he is seeing another person. Watch his reaction. If he gets very angry, then he is lying and is probably cheating. If he answers but doesn’t look you straight in the eye (he hangs his eyes downwards), he is probably cheating. Also, he will create a story that rambles on or doesn’t make sense. This is the time to pull out any evidence you have and confront him with it. From there and beyond is another story. Emotional and difficult. But reconcilable. I

’ve just returned from the awe-inspiring country of South Africa, and am still daydreaming about it. The beauty of the private game reserves on the outskirts of Kruger National Park is that you must be booked into one of their lodges to view the game, making for far less 4WDs and other tourists driving around. Tinga Private Game Reserve and Sabi Sand Game Reserve both have stunning lodges and a huge population of wild animals, including the Big 5 – lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard. On our adventures we spotted hyena, herds of elephants with quite a few young, and a number of gangly giraffe who galloped up the track ahead of us.

Returning to the private lodges is always a treat - they are beautiful. Generally there is a central lodge where you will find the reception, bar, dining areas, both indoor and outdoor, boutique, spa and any other public areas. Then each room is its own smaller private lodge, with big beds and large bathtubs where you can soak in bubbles and watch animals through the large bay windows. At our lodge, there was bushbuck everywhere, wild but fairly tame. I was delighted to find a fawn by the deck of my room too. Monkeys suddenly appear in the trees, looking for any unguarded snack, and they strike quickly, so mind your muffins! We have a wonderful deal for you with On The Go Tours, so you too can experience the

romance of Africa. It is such a special place on our earth that it is the perfect destination for a romantic holiday for two.

Explore South Africa With our ‘World in One Country’ tour See exciting wildlife and breathtaking scenery travelling from Johannesburg to Cape Town, safari in Kruger and Swaziland, hike in Drakensberg and pony break in Lesotho. Explore lush forest and taste delicious wines. This small group tour really does have it all…

OSTERIA VIVO

Gold Coast’s Own Little Italy L

ocated on level four of Jupiters Hotel & Casino in the entertainment precinct of Broadbeach, Osteria Vivo has been wowing diners with it’s authentic flavours, generous menu and bringing to the Gold Coast it’s very own “Little Italy”. Traditional décor with a modern twist, Vivo, as it is affectionately known, caters for those intimate nights with cosy booths creating a warm intimate atmosphere. Or if it’s an evening feasting with friends and family the “open table” philosophy Vivo plays host to cater to your every need. Head Chef Luciano Gandolfo, born and bred in Sicily, brings with him the training and love of traditional Italian cooking as well as his experience from kitchens around the world such as Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Risotto is the ‘piece de resistance’ at Vivo with six varieties that set the standard for this timeless Italian dish including wild mushroom, roasted pumpkin and sage, and herb roasted scallop. With the focus of showcasing the risotto in it’s true form, the utmost care is taken throughout the cooking process from the Soffritto (the base), to the Tostatura (the toasting of the rice) and the final stage, Manecatura (the beating in of butter and September 2012

cheese to give the risotto it’s signature creaminess). Using a technique that balances the science of timing and consumption, the risotto is served without delay, flowing onto the plate from a bottomless glass to ensure optimum consistency that creates a “straight from the pan” setting. Many featured ingredients on Vivo’s menu are sourced direct from the motherland itself including olives, mozzarella, chipolini onions, prosciutto de Parma ham, mushrooms, artichokes, vinegars, risotto rice, dried pasta and selected olive oils. Presentation along with service is impeccable as desserts are brought to the table enveloped in smoking dry ice and unusual shaped crockery. An extensive beverage list complements Vivo’s menu and the experienced staff will assist you with your selection of understanding and expertly matching wines to your meal. “If you cook with a smile, even your food will smile” says Chef Luciano.

A TAVOLA NON SI INVECCHIA (At the table with good friends and family you do not become old), so for a slice of Gold Coast’s most experienced Italian restaurant, treat yourself at Osteria Vivo.

just add spice lifestyle RECIPES

The Get it September ‘passion’ issue has got us all feeling a little more sensual, so as a special treat we asked Dr Alexander & Marie Ryan (known as Australia’s ‘Love Doctors’) if they would share some recipes from their hot cook-book, Spicy Bedroom Recipes. Bon appetit!

Kinky Curry

Ingredients:

400mL can coconut milk 2-3 tablespoons green curry paste 200g chicken breast fillet, cut into strips 150mL or 2/3 cup chicken stock 1-2 tablespoons fish sauce 1 teaspoon sugar or grated palm sugar 4-5 lime leaves 1 baby eggplant, diced 100g broccoli, cut into florets ¼ cup coriander leaves Extra coriander for garnishing

September 2012

Method:

Pour 1/3 of the coconut milk into heavy based saucepan. Bring to boil. Stir in curry paste and stir fry for 2-3 minutes to bring out the flavour. Add chicken strips and stir to keep them separated. Make sure they are well coated with sauce. Mix remaining coconut milk with stock, fish sauce and sugar in a bowl. Add this mixture to the pan. Stir in lime leaves, eggplant, broccoli and coriander leaves. Bring to boil, then simmer for 10 minutes or until chicken is tender. Serve with steamed basmati rice and garnish with coriander. Tell each other your kinky desires after eating.

Sexy Salmon Ingredients:

Blini ½ cup Self Raising flour 1 egg, lightly beaten ¼ cup milk 2 teaspoons sour cream

Method:

Topping

¼ cup sour cream ¼ cup mayonnaise ½ teaspoon lemon juice 2 teaspoons fresh chives, finely chopped 100g smoked salmon, sliced Garnish each blini with ½ teaspoon black caviar and a dill sprig

Sift flour into bowl. Combine egg, milk and sour cream. Add to flour. Whisk until batter is smooth and free of lumps. Stand for 10 minutes. Heat a large non-stick frying pan. Apply cooking spray to pan. Drop teaspoons of blini batter into pan. Turn each blini when bubbles appear on top. Cook until second side is brown. Remove blinis. Repeat procedure until remaining mixture is cooked. Mix sour cream, mayonnaise, lemon juice and chives in a small bowl. Spoon a small amount of sour cream mixture on top of each blini. Top each blini with smoked salmon. Decorate with caviar and a dill sprig.

Tempting Tempura Vegetables and Prawns Ingredients:

½ cup plain flour for coating prawns and vegetables Vegetable oil for deep frying 4-6 green king prawns peeled, tails intact, deveined ½ kumara (orange sweet potato),

thinly sliced 1 zucchini, halved lengthways 1 small eggplant, thinly sliced 1 medium carrot, peeled thinly sliced diagonally ½ cup Hoisin sauc

Method:

Preheat oven to 160ºC. Place ½ cup plain flour in a shallow bowl. Half fill a deep fryer or wok with oil. To make tempura batter: Combine egg yolks and chilled water in a bowl. Stir mixture with a fork. Add the 2 cups of sifted flour a little at a time, stirring lightly with a fork with each addition (do not over mix). Coat prawns and vegetables lightly in the extra flour.

Tempura batter

2 egg yolks 2 cups water, chilled 2 cups plain flour ½ cup plain flour, extra for coating

Dip prawns and vegetables in tempura batter to evenly coat; six pieces at a time. Gently ease the 6 pieces in hot oil. Cook turning occasionally for 2-3 minutes or until crisp. Place in oven to keep warm. Use a slotted spoon to remove and drain on paper towel. Repeat above steps until all food is cooked. Arrange on plate and serve with Hoisin sauce. Feed your partner whilst whispering sweet nothings into their ear.

Tackling Twitter

Keen to invest a little more time within the Twitterverse to see where it might take you, but not quite sure where to begin? Sarah Blinco shares some insights.

I

’m a big fan of Twitter. I Tweet travel, style, events, locations … from the local coffee shop to the Broadbeach Jazz festival, to live on tour in Europe and front row (well… not quite) at London Fashion Week. Twitter is terrific for boosting your profile, chatting with like-minded (potential) friends or colleagues, and staying up-to-date with news from your industry. Admittedly, I didn’t understand Twitter via its website (www.twitter.com); it wasn’t until I started using TweetDeck (www. tweetdeck.com) that I finally ‘got it’. I discovered the value of Twitter while living abroad, during which time Australia (ie. home - where my family were located) was hit by numerous disasters. I was really grateful to discover Twitter’s # (conversation) function, and following conversations (eg. #cycloneyasi #brisbanefloods) being updated by locals on the ground, I knew exactly what the situation was. There is an old story I heard about Twitter’s real claim to fame. When the bombings occurred in Mumbai a few years back, it took the region by surprise. Obviously media were not on hand to cover it, but people stuck in their hotel rooms started Tweeting live updates. They were literally in the thick of it, and worldwide news agencies were

receiving their updates the same way I was ‘in the know’ on the severe weather situation in Australia in 2011. In my bid to share Twitter with Australians who are on the verge of experiencing its benefits, I thought I’d list a few of my personal favourite tips. These aren’t new or even very special or secret, but there are some of you out there who might not know how to get into Twitter – and if you want to (whether for work, to promote yourself or to engage with your favourite celebrities or mentors), consider the following: 1. Regularly glance at your Twitter stream, update (ie. Tweet), reply, and retweet (that is, sharing someone else’s Tweet). TweetDeck and Smart Phone APPs can make it easier to get into a routine. 2. Remember, @ usually indicates a person or entity (eg. @sarahblinco @Get_It_Magazine) – so you can talk @… them; whereas # is a conversation – particularly easy to identify if something ‘big’ is happening. For example, in August many were following the #Olympics conversation. I usually search a # before using it (to verify accuracy), then if you find lots of

people are conversing in a # conversation, eg. about #travel #style #RPatz #StateofOrigin, add it to your Tweet so you’re included in that global view. 3. Use key words in your profile! Often it’s what will gain you followers, so use words that reflect what YOU want to be associated with. These might be professional attributes (eg. journalist, teacher) or fun (eg. dogs, paranormal, ballet). Try to Tweet, as well as interact with someone at least once or twice a day. Use # in your Tweets, and be yourself. Cross-promote your websites and products, but don’t ‘sell’. Instead, be informative and helpful – you’ll gain a reputation for being an expert in your field, rather than just another sales-person. If you’re just getting started, keep practising – it really is fun! If you’re a seasoned expert, please share your tips with us. The thing I love about social media is there’s always something new to learn every day, and I’m most certainly open to learning. More at www.travellivelearn.com/twittertips-for-newbies or Tweet @Get_It_ Magazine and @sarahblinco

ASTRO GIRL

Virgo – August 23 - September 22 Happy personal New Year Virgo. September will bring you great energy for health and prosperity. Avoid over-analysing. When you are positive, there is nothing you cannot achieve. Trust instincts regarding money, thinking in ‘lack’ will hinder progress. Pay attention to repetitive thoughts, dreams and gut instincts. Libra – September 22 – October 23 Your finances are looking very good this month and you will be starting to feel like you have more clarity to make better decisions regarding investments. Friendships will also be favourable, so make the most of the social opportunities. Allow yourself to see the beauty in the people you care about. Scorpio – October 23 – November 22 Personal power and initiative will be very strong this month. You will have the ability to tap into your resources and make the changes necessary to create the conditions you have been working towards. Singles, romantic opportunities are coming your way. Don’t pass up an invitation to a social event or celebration. Sagittarius – November 22 – December 22 This month you may feel like you are living life in the fast lane. Go with it Sagittarius as your prospects for improvements in career will start to present themselves a lot quicker than you originally thought. Home and family will also be a focus for you during September, with changes needed in this area of your life as well. This will create emotional challenges, so tread carefully. Capricorn – December 22 – January 20 You will feel a hold on your financial freedom this

month. Don’t panic, this is a perfect time to review how you manage money and evaluate how things can be improved. Aquarius – January 21 – February 19 September is a great time to focus on objectives for your social life and career. Paying attention to the bigger picture will get you a long way, so take action. Remember, feeling right about something is great, but doing it right will be very important. Being a humanitarian is one thing, but helping others to help themselves will bring success. Pisces – February 19 – March 20 There will be a lot of activity towards achieving goals, bringing you more emotional harmony than you had hoped for this month. Go with the flow, it is really happening and you can finally breathe a sigh of relief as dreams become a tangible reality. There is still work to do on your career and finances, so focus your actions towards this area. Aries – March 20 –April 19 Health and wellbeing will be important this month. You will have the urge to look great and feel fine, so make the most of it. Focus on detoxing and shedding kilos. There is good energy around your love life, your libido will also be stronger and this is a more sexually active month for you. Taurus – April 20 – May 21 Enjoying life, expressing your personal creativity and getting involved in social activities will get you places this month. Creative juices will be

flowing, so this is a great time to beautify your home or redecorate. There is also positive energy around your finances, indicating achievements with financial goals. This will give you more clarity and confidence, bringing really good outcomes for you to build on in future. Gemini – May 21 – June 21 The energy shifts in the planets will direct your focus towards home and family this month. Career will take the back seat as you work through the challenges relating to loved ones and how they are interacting amongst themselves and towards you. Everything is temporary; nothing is set in stone, so give it time. Pay attention to your health and get plenty of sleep. Cancer – June 21 – July 22 Finishing projects around the home and focusing energy on family and loved ones will be prominent during September. You are in your element when loved ones are content, so make the most of it. Social and leisure activities will bring the family together and make way for you to feel a sense of achievement. Financial prospects are also promising through social and family connections. Leo – July 22 – August 23 Financially things still look promising this month, but don’t become complacent. Pay attention to your spending. Whilst your financial judgment is good at the moment, you will need to identify the difference between needs and wants. This month is also a great time for expanding the mind and developing your knowledge or taking a course in the subjects that interest you.

LAST WORD

with Sarah Blinco

BONNIE LYTHGOE Accomplished dancer, entertainer and producer, and well-known to Aussie audiences for her time judging our version of So You Think You Can Dance, Bonnie Lythgoe is now a proud part-time resident of the Gold Coast. This month she shares with us a few childhood memories, travel tips and what passion means to her. Where did you grow up? London, UK Who are you most inspired by? Passion: Anyone who has a passion for life, dance, singing, acting, love, for learning all those things that push you forward to be a better you. I am also inspired by sportsmen and women. They have so much passion, and training is tough, but to them it is success. What’s your first memory of ‘dance’? I was three years old being asked to do this song and dance about an ugly duck. I sang with a horrid face, messed up my dance three times, stamped on the costume and refused to ever do a dance like that again! My first memory of So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) was season one, when I was suddenly working next to two judges I didn’t know and staring into the camera wondering what I was going to say and how I was going to feel about Australian dancers. Of course, it turned out to be fantastic. Where has been your favourite place to perform? The London Palladium, England. Do you have any favourite dancers you love to watch? So many, because great dancers are inspiring. But I love watching Hip Hop dancers as I can’t believe the tricks they can do. Just Amazing! The Bolshoi Ballet, incredible, and of course I love performers in shows like Cirque du Soleil, so talented. Then to watch, it has to be Gene Kelly, Twitch from SYTYCD America, then our lovely winner, Jack from Australian SYTYCD, and Derek Hoff, an American Latin-American dancer. Let’s not forget Fred Astaire. When did you first decide to purchase property on the Gold Coast? About seven years ago, I like the area so much and I have family on the Coast also; it made sense. What’s your favourite time of year to reside here? I love the summer. I am a Leo so I crave the sunshine and all the trees and flowers are awake and kicking. As a ‘citizen of the world’ (who lives between the Gold Coast, UK, LA and Portugal) can you tell us what your favourite things are about each of these different places? Yes I am very lucky! Let’s start with Portugal. First of all I can walk around without makeup because nobody knows me. It is really very real, the Portuguese people are wonderful and the food is the best. Fish especially. Every Saturday night you can walk into Tavera, a beautiful old town, and watch traditional Portuguese dancing. Slowly but surely all anxiety melts away and you are in a little world of paradise. Los Angeles - I love the buzz, the crazy speed of the work that you do; the glamour of the ladies, the talent, cosmetic surgeons, and of course the weather. The UK is back to my roots. Green fields, Royal Ballet, Big Ben, Olympics (my niece was in the Olympics for Equestrian), my family, London just wonderful memories of my ‘growing-up’ life. The cold snow in winter and the blazing fire at Christmas is just lovely. The Gold Coast - my second home and a place that changed my life. I love the youth, the ocean, theatre in Brisbane, fabulous dancers, the friends I have met, the pink diamonds, Versace Hotel, my home on the golf course, my family, the weather and the great food. Can you tell us a bit about Lythgoe Family Productions? Lythgoe Family Productions is my company, and it is something I wanted to set up for the family. My son is a producer of the company and I hope more Lythgoes will join. We produce TV reality series, behind-the-scenes, musicals with a modern edge such as Snow White and Cinderella, and we are based in Los Angeles and in our third year.

And what of your new series, Opening Night? It is coming out in the States in October and is about how we put a musical together. I am the director on camera, and it follows me into auditions, rehearsals and up to the opening night. It’s a me you didn’t see on SYTYCD as the pressure is tremendous -sometimes I look tired and frustrated, but it is honest and a glimpse for the public to see how a show is put together. A book is also in the pipeline. What can we expect? I have been wanting to write this book for a while and so it starts now. It will be a bit about my life, but more than that, it is really a book for women. I am a strong woman but to walk away from my marriage was very difficult and still is. I want to share my feelings with other women. No one has to stay in a bad marriage, but many women do because they can’t face life alone. I want to explain how you can turn the page and start again, how amazing it can make you feel, and how at any age you can become a successful and fulfilled woman. I have so much to say and so much experience. I guess it’s giving hope and a future to many.
